Words From Dennis A quick look back at the last financial year reveals that those outlets who stock the widest range (either by daily feeds from us, or by physical stock) sell the most books. And some of our bestsellers are not new. It amazes me that whilst our sales were down for the year, the stable books like “Secret Girls' Business” sold more than the previous year (4000 copies), the same with Secret Boys' Business; and both of these titles are firm sale. So the system works. Our biggest seller was Taxing Air where the ratio of print to eBook was 60/40. Next was “Weed Foragers Handbook”; tough year. The other way to look at it is that due to POD & eBooks we sold over 3500 line items which is up a lot on previous year. With the new publishers coming to us and the growth in the catalogue we will increase our number of titles in the next 12 months again; perhaps 5000 line items. So the early look at this year is much more tenable. My early estimates are 30% growth in the first half and then a sustained second half. I think it is valuable for you to hear these sorts of numbers. The early books that look like they could be our best sellers are the James Morrison biography and the Blanche D’Alpuget novel. We have some trading term changes which will be announced shortly. I forget when we last had to lift our minimums – but we can’t absorb the cost increases to a point where the underlying value of having a business is simply not present. If our title count was dropping it could be different, but that is not the case. Anyway $100 net is what it will be until we get more increases in costs. Even the cpi on the premises is a few weeks wages. Electricity, Australia Post; I cringe when I look at our Worker Compensation charges. Enough. The Taschen supply from Gardners (UK) is exciting as it gives us ongoing stock availability with well priced air freight (50% discount on trade titles as well) and as I am discovering some interesting sea freight options for bulk orders. Our Ian Roberts from Gardners is also on a spirited learning curve with his people when it comes to books weighing over 50 kilograms. So this month has the first of our “Taschen” tip-ins in the order form. Rip out the centre pages and send the order to Gardners. This time a cool GBP 349.00 book “National Geographic 125 Years"; and I think it will end up being purchased by me as an early Christmas gift; can I Lay-by that? (do we still have Lay-by? – used to be big in my Father’s
Furniture shop in the 1960’s) Strange to remember this but he bought the “Prospero” Library in the 1950’s and turned into a Used Furniture shop next to the Town Hall in Malvern. In those days the private libraries were destroyed by the Government funded Municipal Libraries.) Life on the road gets tougher as more shops can’t compete with the investment needed for change (as well as the landlords); the other week as well as experiencing minus temperatures (-3C) in Canberra I got the news that The Bay Bookshop in Batemans Bay was to close in October. Still, it is enjoyable making your appointments and then showing the books. As almost all of our books are Australian authored it is a thrill when we get the shops interacting with them; Electric Shadows (ACT) have patiently put together a nice night upcoming with Susan Cutsforth (Our House is Not in Paris), I can’t make it but it should be an enviable night at the Alliance Française. I look at our website to see all the events and author works that continue across Australia and New Zealand. Unity Books in Wellington had a very successful appearance by Phil Kafcaloudes last month. We have a really good muster at Melbourne Writers Festival as well. Off to Tasmania at the end of the month to have a look at MONA as well as catching up with the shops in Launceston and Hobart. Enjoy the books and look for better sales over the next months. Forgot to say my book of the month is Fabulous Fred The Strife & Times of Fred Cook; will be on the local Footy Show as well. Sort of mixture of true sporting biography and true crime. It should be in strong demand due to this cross of content. Stock up big as it will only be at the bookshops; If we get a rush the 2000 copies will go in three weeks and we will be out of stock for Father’s Day. The readers will be those who want to relive the days of the footy hero who complained about those grounds where the facilities did not enable his plug in hair dryer for the end of match heroics. I have to admit the reading of it has swayed my opinion positively on some of the big names around town. Buy heaps! DJ

'Dying in the back of a screaming ambulance, my main concern was to live, not because I loved life but because I wanted to be around to hear the story of my survival. This was all just a popularity contest. The fights, the crews and the graffiti were all just ways to be talked about. That was my life.' At the age of 15, Luke Kennedy, an overweight kid from Sydney's southern suburbs, fell into graffiti tagging. Soon he'd dropped out of school to spend all his time with his crew, bombing trains and train lines, thieving, drinking, taking drugs and ‐ Luke's specialty ‐ street fighting. Nothing could stop 'Punchy' (Luke's tag and nickname). He was notorious for taking the biggest risks, drinking the most and fighting anyone who dissed his crew. Punchy was stabbed in the chest and glassed in the head. Some of his friends ended up in jail; others ended up dead. When he was busted bombing a train in Melbourne, a prison sentence looked certain. But a judge gave Punchy one more chance. This time, he took it. Luke quit graffiti, drugs and alcohol and lost 47 kilos. His journey from overweight, drunk street thug to fit, sober and successful business owner whose focus is on helping others turn their lives around is gripping, powerful ‐ and absolutely inspiring. Selling points ∙ powerful, true story that shines a light on topical issues of tagging, alcohol and violence ∙ topic sure to attract media coverage ∙ promotion by PR and media consultant Deb McInnes ∙ highly motivated and promotable author Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

his publication is a unique and highly readable contribution to the commemoration of the centenary of the Anzacs in World War 1. Ted Egan presents an historical documentation of the Anzacs and the ordinary men, women and children of the two young nations of Australia and New Zealand, forever affected by this tragic episode in world history. Set against the political background of the day, succinctly revealed, Egan brings a clarity and immediacy to this period by his interweaving of personal stories, deeply moving songs, a collection of public and personal photos and an historical narrative that speaks directly to the reader, engaging our hearts as well as our heads. It is a story of the loss of innocence of two young nations, for a generation and beyond. Amusing anecdotes and stories of great courage and ingenuity leaven, to some extent, the brutal truth behind the personal stories. About the Author Ted Egan is a self proclaimed 'old bushy' who lives in Alice Springs in the Centre of Australia. Since leaving Melbourne at age 16, he has been fascinated by Australian history, its unique people and the Australian way of life, in this, perhaps the most multi-cultural nation on Earth. For the last 40 years he has been writing and recording songs, filming and writing about the Australian people who to Ted represent the real ethos of this country. He has just completed my 30th album of songs. Ted is "the presenter" of 13 x 1 hour documentary films titled This Land Australia, and has written ten books.

Patriotism's for those who have never been to War. Susan Ulrich is a seasoned avionics engineer. Brian Ulrich, Jason Duhamel and Jedidiah Williams are US marines. But no amount of training can prepare them for the horror that confronts them after returning from a day's paintball skirmish: the smouldering ruins of their lodgings and the twenty bullet‐ridden corpses of its other residents. And on meeting the surly Gulf War veteran and owner of the paintball lodge, the four are soon thrust into a desperate struggle that will demand more than their own survival. With ten billion dollars of munitions at stake and a ruthless militia vying to claim them, the race is on to expose the venal politics enshrouding the issue and thwart an initiative to arm every extremist in the East with the finest modern weapons available. "An action packed tale of camaraderie and triumph against diversity. Never a dull moment. One for the good guys." ‐Ben Hyde, The Advertiser About the Author Daniel Springham is an aerospace engineer and author. In his precious little free time he is a motorcycle restorer, jazz drummer, and modern weapons enthusiast. Currently he lives in South Australia with his folks but plans to buy a mansion with the royalties from his book sales. The Skirmish is his first novel.

How has sport, starting as the happy games of childhood, become branded as an endless competition of ‘winning’ and ‘losing’? Why is the public apparently ‘unperturbed’ with humiliating so many people? It can ‘cost’ five thousand ‘losers’ to produce one ‘winner’ – sport, a ‘weapon of mass destruction’. Will to Win tries to explain why millions trek weekly to its myriad global chapels/stadiums for worship, blessing and succour, and how it spreads its tentacles across the globe, and floods daily media. And how it has the confidence to believe its ‘winners’ can teach the community how to become ‘successful’ in business and life. This book is a work of reflection by a social scientist. About the author Don Miller (b. 1930) is the founder and director of Melbourne Centre for Ideas (MCI) www.melbournecentreforideas.com.au. Don’s 35 years in the Political Science Department at Melbourne University established his career in what could be broadly termed, thinking. He continues to write, design and facilitate workshops on themes like ‘Rethink Time and Reduce Stress’ and ‘Beyond Commonsense’. Everything he does, as teacher and author, is directed to looking at things with fresh eyes. An interest in India has also allowed Don to constantly reflect on the similarities and differences of Western and non-Western cultures. Previous books: The Reason of Metaphor; a Study in Politics, Sage Publ., 1992; Neighbours and Strangers, Rainbow Publ., Delhi, 1999; ‘Beyond the Rushdie Affair’, Third Text (Special Issue), London. Don has published articles in a wide range of academic journals and magazines in England, USA, Canada, France, Germany, India, Australia. Your kids know way more about technology than you, and it’s time you did something about it. Today’s kids are intuitively able to use every device, app, game and social network handed to them. Just give a table or a smartphone to a toddler and watch what happens. But as life speeds up, and we’re busier than ever being ‘good parents’ the technological gap between parents and kids seems to grow exponentially. We expect the Government and the education system to do something about it, the fact is, kids desperately need their parents to understand the technology they are using RIGHT NOW, and to embrace the technology themselves. There is no point in fighting technology or ignoring it. It’s not going away, and the sooner you embrace it, the better of you and your family will be. This book is aimed at helping you get started with technology and to understand how it can actually help, and not hinder your family life through many practical applications. It will also serve as a valuable resource to teachers, career advisors, grandparents and other influencers of children who realise the world is changing and are prepared to step up and do something about it. Written by Yvette Adams, a mother of two, who never thought in a million years she’d work in IT, she now gets a real kick out of helping people fall in love with technology too. From Hope to Strategy: The Anatomy of Negotiation, is a book that gives you the latest tools to do the right thing the right way. It will provide you with the communication strategies and negotiation frameworks needed to form new skills, improve processes, be a better leader, and make your relationships and outcomes more predictable. The information in this book is based on extensive research and experienced practitioners, who have participated in and advised on high-stakes negotiations and conflicts that have resulted in practical value-creating outcomes. "Psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) once wrote, "If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. Wayne Harrison's book, From Hope to Strategy - The Anatomy of Negotiation, supplies the reader with the additional tools to adequately stock their negotiator's toolbox, preparing them for success in negotiations, no matter what obstacles they may confront in their business or private lives. Mr. Harrison takes the reader through the steps of Preparation, Process, and Practices in negotiation strategies, and clearly makes his points by consistently citing "real-life" examples that further clarify the teaching points presented throughout his book. The relevance of this study to the law enforcement crisis and hostage negotiator cannot be overstated. This book, and the knowledge it puts forth, can truly enhance a negotiator's ability to become more successful, and in my line of work, this means it can save lives." – Michael H.Baker, Senior SWAT Tactical Element Leader and Crisis/Hostage Negotiator with the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles, California USA. Confessions of Ethical Inve$ting encourages us to think differently about money as a tool for investing. With retirement savings pools growing rapidly around the developed world, it is important for each of us to understand different strategies, make informed decisions about financial choices and act according to our values. With a background in financial services and marketing, Kassia Klinger explores her own relationship with money, sharing lessons learned as well as the inspiring origins of ethical investing that she unearths along the way. Klinger reveals the positive power of money when employed for the benefit of all: society, the environment and investors. Klinger takes a wide‐angle view of the last fifty years traversing global social trends and major political events, while on a personal level confessing her hopes, dreams, concerns, challenges, defeats and triumphs finding congruence with some pioneering individuals she meets. Confessions of Ethical Inve$ting will challenge, inspire and empower you. If thinking about your financial future, investment alternatives, retirement savings or what on earth to do with a recent or upcoming inheritance, then this book is a great place to start. With wry humour Klinger tells a very personal tale. There is a golden thread in the narrative ... Klinger’s intersection with a larger story – the growth of ethical investment ... The writer is ultimately optimistic, believing that one can ‘do‐ well’ by ‘doing‐good’. Dr Simon Longstaff AO, St James Ethics Centre

The Gratitude Diary and Daily Planner is not just an ordinary diary. It is a tool for transformation and growth. On each page an opportunity to journey through your thoughts of gratitude and love. Based on the laws of Quantum Theory, if you, as your own creator, form an emotional connection with all that is desired, and give thanks for this future outcome, you are conciously and in a positive way manipulating your future. This has to be THE most exciting practice available to all beings at this time. No therapy, guru, doctor or meditation will create such profound results. Also included a weekly moon chart and astrological guide which will support you in becoming more attuned to the Greater Femenine, the planet, and her rhythms. We already have an abundance of supportive and nurturing energies available to mankind. By tuning in, you will support your own connection to self and be naturally more available to serve and support others. The process is gentle, simple... and yet profound. Just notice. It only takes one minute to give thanks, say hello to the moon, and change your state of being.

The seventh edition of Award Winning Australian Writing (AWAW) continues its commitment to showcasing the best short stories and poems that have won competitions around the country. Like the 2013 anthology, this year’s collection will feature over fifty writers and competitions, promoting the work of both emerging and established authors. ‘… if it weren’t for this publication, most of the winning pieces collected here could easily have been sucked into the darkness of desk drawers and swiftly forgotten. But, thanks to this book, these stories and poems are still being read. And for that, I am grateful this series exists.’ ‐ from a review by Bronwyn Lovell in Lip magazine AWAW’s past six editions were received very favourably, being edited by Adolfo Aranjuez, previous in‐house editor of Melbourne Books, and now editor of film and media magazine Metro, the subeditor of media literacy magazine Screen Education and a member of Writers Victoria’s editorial committee. Past editions of AWAW received support from Lisa Dempster (Melbourne Writers Festival director), Philip Rainford (Fellowship of Australian Writers president), and authors Arnold Zable, Delia Falconer and Mark Tredinnick — who have all written forewords for the book. The critic Matthew Lamb, in The Australian, commended the ‘invaluable service’ AWAW offers to the literary community, while in The Age reviewer Lorien Kaye celebrates that AWAW gives readers a chance ‘to value these winners’. Similar sentiments are expressed by author Irma Gold, who wrote in Overland that AWAW is ‘a must read’ and The Advertiser critic Patrick Allington, who praised the ‘impressive new voices’ and ‘energy and inventiveness’ Phone: 03 9762 9100 | Fax 03 9762 9200 Email: orders@dennisjones.com.au

This volume opens with a full‐length book of new poems by Petra White, A Hunger. Bound‐in with it are her two prior books, The Simplified World and The Incoming Tide. The new poems of A Hunger are as lucid as they are mysterious: crafted for the ear, and for an emotional tone that can slip delicately between the mischievously ironic and a cut‐through bleakness or joy. A strong theme at times is depression. As a poet she presses there beyond recording something personal into examining darkness itself, in a fierce art that deliberately gives and asks for no indulgence. The same goes for her love poems, in a sequence that plunges into the wild contradictions and poignancy of new love, with some glances to the Renaissance poets. White’s poems inhabit life’s essential fragility with a light‐footed steadfastness. Her well‐known ‘Southbank’, from her first book, is given a further turn in a new sequence, ‘The Sound of Work’: Petra White is one of the few contemporary poets to write convincingly about work in an office – indeed work in general. In adding her prior two books to this volume, the Press intends not only to keep them in print, but to lay out for readers the fullness of the growth of an oeuvre. She, the poet, has taken the opportunity to make a handful of excisions and revisions. About the Author Petra White was born in Adelaide in 1975 and lives in Melbourne. The Incoming Tide (JLP 2007) was shortlisted for the Queensland Premiers Literary Awards and the ACT Judith Wright Award. The Simplified World (JLP 2010) was shortlisted for the John Bray Poetry Award, the ACT Judith Wright Award, and awarded the Grace Leven prize. She holds a Master of Public Policy and Management.

Kerb originated as an RMIT University pamphlet in 1989 for the purpose of critiquing and discussing the discourse of landscape architecture. Published annually, the journal now boasts a diverse selection of both international and local contributors, focusing on contemporary landscape architecture themes. The journal is unique in being compiled and edited each year by a small group of students, who select a range of articles pertinent to the dedicated theme of each edition. Kerb seeks to set the agenda for designers and landscape architects, establishing a platform for new ideas and contemporary design theory. Kerb is now featured on university reading lists around the world. Through the creation of place and the understanding of space, landscape architecture is able to solidify the intermediary. Kerb 22 interrogates the notion of remoteness from four viewpoints, identifying opportunities of engagement within spaces balancing on the edge of tangibility, or deeply virtually sited. This issue of Kerb aims to establish connectivity between the entities that lie within a greater territory, calling for the interrogation of space. Whether through the distribution of physical settlements or through the definition of virtual boundaries, mediating the divide places remoteness within a near‐instantaneous reach; enabling us to grasp and employ the remote as a tool for spatial negotiation.

Practitioners of landscape architecture tread the line between creator and curator. Kerb 21 explores how the global condition is influencing practitioners, their methods and the dynamic that exists in the discipline between the established and multidisciplinary practices. This issue of Kerb aims to initiate a diverse discourse on how different modes of practice are shifting the discipline. What are these modes of practice, and what are they responding to? Alternate modes of practice give us the tools to respond to the issues unfolding around us and to synthesise design thinking into other domains.

Faith in Action: HammondCare is the compelling history of one of Australia's leading charities and health and aged care providers. It begins with maverick Archdeacon Robert Hammond, Minister of St Barnabas’ Church, Broadway, who established Hammond’s Pioneer Homes during the depths of the Great Depression to provide affordable homes for struggling families. By 1940, Hammondville, on the outskirts of Sydney, had 110 homes, a school, general store, post office and church, and was a nationally recognized model for small‐scale land settlement. In the early 1950s the organisation established Hammondville Homes for Senior Citizens, one of Australia’s first integrated facilities for disadvantaged elderly people. Today, HammondCare services a wide range of people with complex health and aged‐care needs, through dementia and aged‐care services, palliative care, rehabilitation, and mental health programs. From localised home provider to one of the nation’s most respected health and aged‐care providers, Faith in Action chronicles the remarkable 80‐year history of independent Christian charity HammondCare. It's a narrative that mirrors, informs and is integral to the story of our nation's growth. This beautiful hardcover book is illustrated throughout with rare black and white images and includes a section of colour plates.

A body washes up on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in flood. Caught in the act of taking his own life, and surrounded by the bloodstained clothes of his wife, Oleg Kransky is a shoe‐in for number one suspect. But he’s not talking. To anyone. Oleg’s former psychologist, Decca Brand, tells the police that even when Oleg was talking he wasn’t telling the truth – about himself or about his wife. It’s a complicated tale with more twists and turns than a box full of pretzels. How much water will it take to flush out a murderer? About the Author Jane Clifton – author, actress, singer and registered marriage celebrant. Jane is often asked if there is anything she can’t do, to which she simply replies, ‘ballet and making money’. She was part of the smash-hit stage shows Menopause – the Musical and Mum’s the Word; while on the small screen she's had roles in many of Australia’s early TV cops shows. As a singer, she had two top 10 pop singles, and released a solo CD, The Marriage of Style in 2003. She’s also written her memoir, The Address Book (Penguin 2011). She will, however, always best known for a TV role she played 35 years ago: Margo in Prisoner (Cell-Block H). Flush (p/back & ebook) is her third crime novel, following Half Past Dead and A Hand in the Bush (ebooks).

Two city women – a century apart – find love and adventure with rugged men in the Queensland outback. Two love stories; two parallel lives; two destinies. Set in the 19th and 21st centuries, Breakaway Creek is a passionate rural romance of love and its consequences. Shelley and Emma are separated by time but bound by a dark secret to a place called Breakaway Creek. Betrayed by her long‐term boyfriend, Shelley Blake has fled the city to return to her home town. Her interest in a photograph of her great‐great‐grandparents is piqued by her family's reticence about the mystery couple, and a search for answers takes her to the cattle station Breakaway Creek. Here she meets Luke Sherman, a man embroiled in the bitter ending of his marriage and a heart‐breaking separation from his two small boys. Shelley resists an instant attraction to Luke, as neither is ready for a new relationship. And, while Luke struggles to reclaim his children, Shelley uncovers the truth about her ancestors, Alex and Emma. A story of racial bigotry and a love that transcends all obstacles takes the reader back to the pioneering days of the 1890s. About the Author Heather Garside grew up on a cattle property in Central Queensland and now lives with her husband and son on a beef and grain farm in the same area. So she knows a thing or two about 'rural romance' and has a lifetime of experience in the Australian outback. She has previously published three historical romances and has helped to write and produce several compilations of short stories and local histories. Tracks of the Heart, Heather's second book for CDP, is an eBook collection of rural romances (three short stories) is also out now. Perth cop Eve Rock is investigating a series of abductions from the seedy inner-city Paradise Nightclub when her boss adds a murder case to her workload. Now, Eve loves a challenge – about as much as she loves red wine, exotic food and cigars – but this case is a bit tricky because she’d speed dated the sleazy salesman hours before he met his Maker. But then ‘tricky’ is Eve’s middle name. Her mum’s a former hooker-turned-nun who runs a select girls school. Her daughter’s a fanatical ‘Virgin Vigilante’ who attends that same school. And Eve is being stalked by a department store Santa. If that isn't enough, her love life is dead in the water. Or it is until Eve meets dreamy undercover cop Adam Fox whose sex appeal isn't diminished by his slut heels and micro skirt. And then there's his equally gorgeous dad… Eve's life could be peachy... except now someone wants to kill her. Operation Paradise is the debut crime novel for West Australian writer Sarah Evans and the first in the Eve Rock comic crime series. About the Author Sarah Evans is a West Australia English ex-pat who has been writing short stories and novels since leaving the world of journalism in the late eighties and taking up the ‘good life’ in rural WA to raise a brood and attempt self-sufficiency. A crime and romance writer, Sarah also dabbles in spec-fic, fantasy and a touch of horror. The epitome of the muti-tasker she is also a songwriter, book editor and creative writing teacher. Sarah's short stories have won a host of awards including six prizes in the annual Scarlet Stiletto Awards run by Sisters in Crime Australia. Sarah is a member of Sisters in Crime Australia, the Romance Writers of Australia, Romantic Novelist Association and Writers Out of the Asylum; and is the convenor of Bridgetown’s Words in the Valley, a grass-roots readers and writers festival. She’s sassy and opinionated – but maybe not the sharpest feeline on four legs. When Megsy is checked in to the Lap of Luxury Cat Resort, she soon learns there’s a lot she doesn’t know, like: talent, pedigrees, surfing the Intercat, and where her kisskies went. But, with the help of her fellow feeli inmates – Raffles, Big Dan, Zsa Zsa, Hamish the Handsome, and The Colonel – she gets a new perspective on life; and new name from cattery owner, Miss Steph. A.K.A. Fudgepuddle is not a kids' book but is suitable for children - from 6 to 106. It's a book for Cat People - or deuxjambs, as the feelis call us - of all ages. Even Dog People (or quiffo-lovers) will enjoy it. With a grown-up sensibility - of ridiculous proportions - the adventures of Fudgepuddle and her feeli friends is a hilarious tour de fur! About the Author Fin J Ross is a journalist and creative writing teacher who, with her husband, runs a boarding cattery in East Gippsland and breeds Bengal and British Shorthair cats. Fin’s first published books are the true crime anthologies, Killer in the Family and Murder in the Family, co-written with Lindy Cameron. And then a funny thing happened on the way to finishing her first mystery novel: Fin was sidetracked into writing a book about cats. Apparently there are some who call Fin’s new book a work of fantasy, but she knows better. AKA Fudgepuddle is, after all, a biography, a journal, a memoir, so it’s not really even fiction. It is, in fact, the oh-so-true adventures of a demanding cat called Megsy who insisted Fin translate her story into English… sort of.

Thrust into the technology‐driven Earthlands, Shahkara must find the ancient and legendary Elnara death lantern – the only thing that can save her homeworld from the heart‐devouring Taloners. She enlists the help of geeky billionaire Max McCalden, but soon finds that, as a half‐Taloner herself, her blood demands what she knows she can’t have – a human heart. Shahkara longs for love, but as deadly enemies attack at every turn, will her lust for Max destroy them both? Or will she find the strength to free both worlds from a threat more horrific than the demons that share her blood? About the Author Cheryse Durrant grew up on an Australian cattle property where she invented stories about scrub fairies and imaginary superheroes. She wrote her first prose on her aunt's bedroom wall at the age of five but it did not attract the literary acclaim she deserved. She has since worked a variety of jobs, from barmaid and dental receptionist to journalist and tutor. The Blood She Betrayed is the first book in her YA Urban Fantasy Heart Hunter series. It will be followed by The Ghost She Killed and The World She Lost. A caffeine and Twitter addict, Cheryse lives in Bargara, Queensland.

Why do they only have some memories for one day? What is the purpose of the Three Moons’ Song? Which of their magical gifts will allow the children to conquer the riddles of the imprisoned mermaid, the chained eagle and the frozen dragon? Adventure and danger abound as Lyla, Celeste, Lem, Chad and Swift face enchanters, murderers, shape thieves, monsters and slave traders to save all that is precious to them. About the Author Patricia Bernard has spent most of her adult life travelling the world. She has visited 111 countries including Tibet, Cuba, Morocco, India, China, Mongolia and Papua New Guinea. She has seen Central America, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the islands of the Indian and Pacific oceans; and travelled by boat, motorbike, sports car, bus, train, plane and on foot. It is often said that John Macarthur was the father of the wool industry in Australia. But he spent so much time exiled in England, leaving his good wife in charge, that she surely deserves to be acknowledged as the more important parent who enabled Australia to 'ride on the sheep's back' for so long.

Two beautiful traditional Scottish fairy tales, The Selkie Bride and In the Kingdom of the Seals, are brought to enchanting and haunting new life by two creators who are themselves eerily linked to the magical world of the shape‐shifting selkies, who are seals in the water and humans on land. For Kate's ancestors were the McPhees, who, legend says, are descended from the union of Dougal McPhee and his melancholy selkie bride, while Fiona's McDonald ancestors, lairds of the Western Isles, have a strange connection to the McPhees as well, a connection she only discovered while working on the book!

One day, after crashing into Kevin Kangaroo and then splashing into Frankie Frog's pond, Edred has his eyes tested. When a bushfire hits, Edred relies on his new glasses and long legs to lead his friends and family to safety, becoming the unlikely hero of the story. As well as teaching children about native Australian animals, "Edred Emu's New Glasses" encourages children not to laugh at someone with an imperfection. With its brilliant storyline and colourful illustrations bringing the characters to life, this book will appeal to 3 to 8 year olds. This book captures the same charm as its prequel "Kevin's Very First Adventure" and we are able to catch up with all our favourite characters including Kevin Kangaroo, Kalinda Kookaburra and more.

Elizabeth Rose has an unusual family. When they aren't spinning, twirling, parading or flying, she loves to spend time with each of them in her own special way. Through her colourful (and sometimes scrumptious) imagination, Elizabeth Rose reminds us that all love is important, regardless of whether it barks, tastes buttery sweet or comes topped on a stick! A timelessly illustrated book that is destined to become a family favourite.

Garlic has been close to people’s hearts, minds and stomachs for a very long time. It’s been used not only as a food and flavouring, but also for medicinal and spiri‐tual purposes. Its garlicky flavour can be hot, spicy and pungent but also sweet and nutty, and the same cultivar may vary widely with soil and climate. This book shines a light on the mystery and mystique of garlic and heightens its enjoyment. -Guidelines for growing organic garlic around the country -Descriptions of more than 50 Australian cultivars ‐Profiles of a number of Australian growers and their garlics -Recipes for cooking, preserving and smoking … and making your own black garlic -Medicinal uses About the Author A science degree in Botany and Zoology. A year cycling alone through the highways and byways of England, Scotland and Ireland. Voluntary work at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London. A stint looking after a National Trust mansion and eight acres of parkland in rural Victoria, Australia. Starting up and running a herb nursery. Years helping husband build houses. Writing seven published books (see the store) and countless articles especially for Organic Gardener magazine. Photographing every interesting garden and plant within sight. Fielding curly questions on the 3CR radio garden panel. Add in bringing up two children and continual experimentation with the growing of useful and edible plants and we’re up to Penny Woodward in the year 2014.
