Words from the Wise
2016 Vacation Book Guide Where do the books come from? Who are these new publishers? Are the books saleable? Will they be on titlepage? I can’t explain the growth in the number of books we have to offer; it just has grown as we have more stability in the business. The quality of the books is evident by the appearance on them and they read (those I have read) superbly. The constant stream of new publishers / self publishers is admirable and there is still plenty behind this list. Will they be on titlepage? The answer is still no. The costs of that system are prohibitive and we have put the strength behind our daily onix instead. It certainly has not been an inhibitor on growth. Every Bite Takes You Home comes from the award winning publishers Illura Press http:// www.ilurapress.com/new-release.html They are known for “Lentil as Anything; Food, Culture Community”; the winner of 'Best in the World' at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2013 for 'Best Fundraising, Charity, Community Book in the Pacific. It promises to be a beautiful book and a wonderful cause. Paddy Steinforts book Breakfast with Bails is one which I felt was just beautiful. It made me stop, reflect maybe in the way “The Shack” did all those years ago. Dean Bailey was known by many and since his death this book will allow his sprit, dignity and courage live on. Please read and recommend, it has be very widely read as the subject touches so many of us. Thank you Paddy for allowing us to distribute. Ricky Nixon – My Side. You will decide for yourself whether you are “go” Ricky or “no go” Ricky. From a selling point of view we are going to get a sea of enquiries. There has been no time to have any pre-sell in as the final images only got to us this week. The player management side of it is brilliant in its establishment of this part of players well being. Team Work – Ray McLean. Well to have two of his books with us is sensational. I still contend “Any Given Team” is Australia’s sales sequel to “Sacred Hoops”
Jerome and His Women by Joan O’Hagan is historical fiction set in ancient Rome. Born in Melbourne in 1926, Joan O’Hagan grew up in Canberra before moving to New Zealand where she studied Latin, Greek and ancient history at the Victoria University of Wellington. It examines the intrigue surrounding Jerome – a fourth century scholar and controversial Latin Christian priest – who enlists a group of learned women to help translate the bible into Latin at the request of Pope Damasus. With characters based on religious figures and a few fictional ones thrown into the mix, O’Hagan’s story can be placed in the same category as Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. (with thanks to the Daily Telegraph) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Damasus_I Chasing Rainbows http://www.zaidee.org/zaidees-book-chasing-rainbows/ Try to have a look at this and see how we can share this story. Zaidee Rose Alexander Turner – aged 7 years and 22 days died suddenly on 2nd December 2004 from a burst blood vessel in her brain called a Cerebral Aneurism. Zaidee’s parents, Kim and Allan, founded Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation not long after. At the time of Zaidee’s death the Turner family had been registered Organ and Tissue Donors for 5 years. As a result Zaidee donated her Organs and Tissues at the Royal Children’s Hospital, as were her wishes at the time. From this gift, the lives of 7 people (6 children and 1 adult) were improved and, in some cases, saved. Zaidee was the only child in Victoria under the age of 16 years and we have been told one of the youngest Australians to donate her organs and tissues in 2004. She was only 1 of 6 children nationally to donate their organs. Finally Christmas started back in October with the inertia from Canberra Best wishes to all for the period leading up to Christmas and a thought of strength and courage for the French people DJ

"…there are those rare mentors that exert only a subtle force of us at first contact, but whose impact defies the laws of physics and time. Instead of fading, it grows. And when they are gone, when there's no contact at all, the effect multiplies. It's as if their presence was the last tackler to navigate before the message finally hit paydirt in our minds and our hearts." Think of the greatest coach or teacher you've had: what was the most important lesson they passed on? If you're like most people, it's something like "it doesn't take talent to hustle", or "persistence pays off", or just "be yourself." That's because the teachers who really touch us, and change our lives, are the ones who teach us more than just the curriculum, or the skills, or the tricks. They teach us about life, and about character. Dean Bailey, or 'Bails' as everyone knew him, was widely regarded as one of those coaches. Not only was he a former head coach of Melbourne, he'd been a player at one of the powerhouse teams of the 80's, and a coach at two separate premiership teams in modern times. Paddy Steinfort worked side by side with Bails, a relationship first forged during their time living together as they transitioned to a new team. But when Bails was diagnosed with cancer their relationship goes deeper than ever before, as they work to compile one final gameplan for learning and leadership, from a coach who can teach us a lot about life. Breakfast with Bails is the unforgettable true story of a man committed to making others great, even in his final days. In these pages, you are offered the rare opportunity to step inside Bails' hospital room, take a seat beside his bed and listen deeply as he shares the life lessons that sport can give to us all.

2016 Vacation Book Guide
This is the story of Irish convict/bushranger, Martin Cash as told in his own words. He related his tale to a hard‐drinking mob at the Lord Rodney Hotel on Hobart Town’s waterfront. Undoubtedly the old lags interjected with their own recollections and contempt for their British masters. It is easy to imagine the raucous scene as the hardened drinkers tossed back their rum and whipped each other to escalating fury. The result is a vivid account of the brutality of the convict system in Van Diemen’s Land from the viewpoint of a victim caught in the net. Although Cash’s account is unflinching in its depiction of cruelty and corruption, it is not without humour as Cash and his paramour trick their pursuers and make fools of the landed aristocracy.

One of the world’s strangest looking animals, it is so unusual that when it was first examined by European naturalists they thought it was made up of various animals sewn together – a hoax – with a bill and webbed feet like a duck, a tail like a beaver and venomous spurs. People have always been fascinated by these cute, beguiling little creatures. However, many of their habits remain a mystery as they are largely nocturnal and difficult to spot in the wild. This book will take you on a journey into the bizarre world of the platypus and echidna – the world’s only egg‐laying mammals – and offers clues as to where in Australia you may go to see these intriguing animals. Written and photographed by Emmy award‐winning wildlife filmmakers, David Parer and Elizabeth Parer‐Cook, this book incorporates up‐to‐date scientific knowledge about the platypus with fresh new photographs of the animal’s unique behaviour. Featured are extremely rare images of baby platypus interacting with their mother inside their nest deep underground and mesmerising photographs of pairs courting in the wild.

Rome, 382 AD. The Empire is fragile, the pagan beliefs that sustained it are fading. One man stirs up controversy like no other – Jerome. When the Pontiff, Damasus I, commissions Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin, it is a political masterstroke. Highly intelligent and classically trained, Jerome was fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. Jerome’s Vulgate displaces the many alternative biblical texts and plays a critical role in establishing Christianity as a world religion, with Rome at its centre. What is less known is that Jerome is assisted by a circle of aristocratic, educated women who risk their lives in the pursuit of their ideals. Chief among them is the attractive young widow Paula, as devoted to Jerome as she is to his cause. Rumours circulate as his enemies plot to dispose of Jerome once and for all …
Author Information Joan O’Hagan was a crime writer with a background in Classics, and author of the internationally acclaimed A Roman Death. Thanks to meticulous research, a wicked imagination, and over thirty years of living in Rome, she breathes new life into an ancient saint and his world, drawing us into a highly‐charged world of danger and intrigue, while reminding us to question our own values.

Author Information
After constant searching for healthy treats for my children, reading labels on the back of packages of food full of additives, preservatives and lots of sugar, I realised that the best way to ensure that my children were eating foods full of goodness was to bake them myself. However, I didn’t want to just make healthy snacks that looked ‘healthy’ and tasted ‘healthy’. I wanted my children to be able to enjoy treats that looked and tasted like ‘normal’ biscuits, cakes and desserts, but were made from healthy ingredients. I began experimenting, baking healthy and delicious snacks that the whole family could enjoy without the use of added sugar, artificial sweeteners, butter, margarine or white flour. This led to my first cookbook, Have Your Cake, which was published in 2011. Tasting new foods has been a wonderful experience that my children and I have enjoyed together. I was amazed that they began tasting and snacking on the ingredients I placed on the bench while I was preparing the recipes, like dried figs, organic apricots and, of course, dark chocolate. When they began scraping the leftover mixture from the bowl while I was cooking, I knew that the recipe was going to be a success. All the ingredients that I use are available from the supermarket. I hope you enjoy my recipes as much as I have enjoyed creating them. Emily

The courage and humour of those who were taken as prisoners of war, who endured the hardships of the camps and laboured on the Burma‐Thailand railway is a story of triumph and tragedy. Kathryn Spurling has interviewed the survivors and their families as well as mining thousands of documents to weave together a moving tale. It is ultimately a story of chance, endurance and the power of the human spirit.

A Grave Too Far Away illuminates the war experiences of the men of Bomber Command and the terrible effects the war had on their families - an estimated 11,000 Australians lost a loved one for the Bomber Command cause. The Spitfires and Hurricanes of RAF Fighter Command defended the United Kingdom against German aerial attacks and was a major turning point of the war. Read the moving, true stories of British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand air force men and women who played vital roles in destroying a significant portion of the Nazi Germany war industry. An unbelievably important role was heaped onto the shoulders of a squad with an average age of 22 (some as young as 18), but their valiant efforts and ability to transcend the most dire war circumstances enabled them to force Germany to relocate crucial resources into defending the home front. This book is a tribute to the Australians who served in Bomber Command during World War II and made the ultimate sacrifice - read their astonishing tales.

Garlic has been close to people's hearts, minds and stomachs for a very long time. It's been used not only as a food and flavouring, but also for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Its garlicky flavour can be hot, spicy and pungent but also sweet and nutty, and the same cultivar may vary widely with soil and climate. This book shines a light on the mystery and mystique of garlic and heightens its enjoyment. ‐ Guidelines for growing organic garlic around the country ‐ Descriptions of more than 50 Australian cultivars ‐ Profiles of a number of Australian growers and their garlics ‐ Recipes for cooking, preserving and smoking... and making your own black garlic ‐ Medicinal uses Growing easy herbs for

Herbs are so easy to grow and use, they should be everywhere in our gardens and backyards, on every balcony and patio. They can be grown in pots or as hedges, in odd corners and along paths, on fences and in the veggie garden – or, indeed, in a herb garden of their own.
The Australian garlic book like no other: be patriotic, buy local garlic. We all love herbs, with their many scents, colours, and forms, so don’t be afraid to spice up your life by planting some … or many – for beauty, fragrance and flavour!

Writing seven published books (see the store) and countless articles especially for Organic Gardener magazine. Photographing every interesting garden and plant within sight. Fielding curly questions on the 3CR radio garden panel. Add in bringing up two children and continual experimentation with the growing of useful and edible plants and we’re up to Penny Woodward in the year 2014. Melbourne is known for its picturesque parks and gardens and is regarded as Australia's garden city. Victoria is known as the Garden State, and it was in Melbourne's beginnings that Governor Charles La Trobe set aside parklands for people to enjoy the beauty of outdoor gardens. Land was reserved for the Fitzroy Gardens in 1848. Captain Cook's Cottage and over 1,000 trees including an avenue of 250 Dutch and English Elms are located here. The historic Carlton Gardens with the Royal Exhibition Buildings are included in the World Heritage list and annually host the immensely popular Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Kings Domain, established in 1854 encompasses La Trobe's Cottage, the Shrine of Remembrance, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and has many trees planted by early directors of the Botanic Gardens, Baron Ferdinand von Mueller and William Guilfoyle. The Queen Victoria Gardens include a floral clock displaying over 7,000 flowers and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, established in 1846 are regarded as one of the finest botanic, landscaped gardens in the world. Popular pastimes involved strolls through luxurious gardens, socialising at picnics and attending concerts in the parks. Melbourne's passion for natural beauty has led to the creation of hundreds of parks and gardens. The Victoria State Rose Garden, Footscray Park, St Kilda Botanical Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne, the National Rhododendron Gardens and many more, are breathtaking and truly inspirational. The changing colours of each season brings new designs of beauty, enticing visitors to return. Melbourne's parks and gardens are a place to dream, to be inspired and filled with joy.

Between 2002 and 2008 he made three voyages from Ushuaia in southern Argentina to the Antarctic and the sub‐Antarctic. In 2002 he sailed on the yacht Tooluka to the remote sub‐Antarctic island of South Georgia in the middle of the South Atlantic. This heavily glaciated island with numerous high alpine peaks has a remarkable profusion of wildlife along its coasts. In 2006, and again in 2008, he sailed on the yacht Australis to the Antarctic Peninsula. This best‐ known part of Antarctica contains some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere on the planet and provides many opportunities for photographing scenes of exceptional drama and beauty. Deception Island, Cuverville Island, Paradise Harbour, Mount Francis, Port Charcot, Lemaire Channel and Elephant Island are among the places covered. In 1990 David Neilson received a Humanities Program position from the Australian Antarctic Division, and in 2004 the Division awarded him an Antarctic Arts Fellowship. These fellowships enabled him to spend two summers photographing in East Antarctica while based at Australia's Mawson Station. Here he photographed the extensive wildlife around the coast and made three trips to the rarely visited Auster emperor penguin colony. Inland he photographed the Framnes Mountains, the remote Prince Charles Mountains and the Vestfold Hills near Davis Station.

In October 1980, struggling with small waves on the fledgling pro tour, Simon Anderson stuck three fins on a surfboard and changed surfing forever. Now, for the first time, on the 30th Anniversary of his historic breakthrough, Simon tells the entire remarkable story of how a kid from Collaroy graduated to Narrabeen and then took on the surfing world. Three decades after he took a dilemma to inspire a revolutionary solution, Simon is in high demand as a shaper to the world's best surfers and continues to influence the course of surfing history. From longboards to short, singles to twins to thrusters, Aussie titles to the pro tour, Simon's story mirrors the progression of modern surfing. Mattress Actress is the story of Annika Cleeve's eighteen years as a sex worker. Her troubled childhood in Queensland led to working in a brothel on the Sunshine Coast at the age of fifteen, and from there Annika worked her way up to the high‐end parlours, agencies and private work in various parts of Australia and internationally. In this book Annika reveals the truth of a sex worker's life; the clients, the girls, the parlour bosses, the rip‐off merchants, the drug deaths, the white slavery, the discrimination, the corrupt police and politicians, the exotic travel and the money. Mattress Actress is a revealing and gutsy look at someone practising the world's oldest profession in the late twentieth century. From wide‐ eyed innocent to experienced and successful professional, Annika's story is both shocking and highly entertaining. "Annika Cleeve is not her real name but this is her real story: a raw and honest account of life in the raw as a new recruit to the oldest profession." ‐ Andrew Rule

1918: Lord Howe Island, off Australia’s eastern coast. An American, Paul De Martinet, arrives to paint the sub tropical outpost’s vanishing birds. Home to an insular community, jealousy and suspicion lurk not far below the surface of what appears to be an otherwise carefree community. On expeditions into the island’s mysterious and beautiful kentia palm forest he is accompanied by Margaret Sleap, a gifted local gardener. Re‐animating vanished birds in paint, they find each specimen resonates with its own deeper story of loss and belonging. Together they map out the aching territory of love until one day, as tensions surface, they are the victims of a savage attack that sets in motion their own choices of survival.
A SENSATIONAL TRUE AUSTRALIAN 'WHODUNNIT' It's 1964 when a crazed firebug begins torching properties in the once tranquil Hamilton Valley in NSW Australia. Night after night, the wail of sirens wakes the local residents from their sleep. There are no clues to the identity of the culprit, leaving the local police and interstate detectives completely baffled. Little do they know that this would last for close to four years! The detectives have their eye on several persons of interest, when suddenly the method of lighting these fires is discovered... a unique and very clever tactic! When a much loved local is brutally bashed, the valley residents fury burns fierce. Accusations are hurled and friendships shattered as each person becomes suspicious of the other! The Mason family is in shock when confronted by the finger pointed at one of their own for the shocking destruction the 'invisible firebug' is causing the locals. Detectives are alarmed at the explosive anger they experience from the fruit growers when they charge the young man with masterminding the crime.
The second novel in the compelling series about two of medieval history's most fascinating characters, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. It is 1154 and Henry Plantagenet avenges his family honour by taking back the English throne from Stephen the Usurper. The kingdom he inherits is impoverished, lawless and broken by years of civil war. By his side is the beautiful, wealthy and indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine. Combining forces, this golden couple use their charisma and shrewd diplomacy to crush rebellious barons and restore England's prestige and glory. However, an equally ambitious financial magician is needed to restore the royal treasury. Opportunistic Thomas Becket answers the call, using his appointment of Chancellor to fill not only the King's coffers but also his own. In a dance of ambition, vengeance and forbidden passions, Henry, his Queen and the Chancellor fight for political power and control against forces seen and imagined, each with their own agenda, each determined to hide their own shameful secrets.

Long before it was commonplace for Aboriginal dance companies to tour the world. Or for outback "dot paintings" to sell for astronomical sums, it was country music that first gave Aboriginal People a voice in modern Australia. Black skin and country music might seem an unlikely pairing, but Aboriginal country music has a long and rich tradition, from pioneers like Jimmy Little and Dougie Young through Lionel Rose, the Country Outcasts and Auriel Andrew to Vic Simms, Roger Knox and Troy Casser‐Daley. Telling black stories in a way white folks could understand as well, country music was not only a salve for its own dispossessed people, it offered common ground in a divided land, and the possibility of some kind of reconciliation. Packed with rare photographs and memorabilia, and including a detailed discography, Buried Country offers a fascinating account of the growth of this vital force in Aboriginal culture and its role in changing Australian society. Author Information Clinton Walker was dubbed the "best chronicler of Australian grass‐roots culture" by the Sydney Sun‐Herald. His Inner City Sound was the first book to champion independent music in Australia; he is also the author of such works of groundbreaking music and social history as Highway to Hell: The Life and Death of AC/DCLegend Bon Scott; Stranded: The Secret History of Australian Independent Music, 1977‐1992; GoldenMiles: Sex, Speed and the Australian Muscle Car; and Wizard of Oz: Speed, Modernism and the Last Ride of Wizard Smith.

Kids moving out? Or you want them to? Give them this book and send them on their way! This new book covers all those practical skills you've been trying to teach your children and has every handy tip that children finishing school or leaving home need to know. Moving Out! will teach your children how to cook something better than cup noodles and cereal, how to find a place to live in and how to clean it, how to care for their clothes, look after their health, manage their finances and look after their car. A quick read will teach them how to sew on a button, look after a drunk friend, prepare a CV, cook a perfect steak and know if they really need to see a doctor. It is designed as the perfect gift for 18‐25 year olds who are heading off to college or moving out into their own place. Finally.
Author Information Anni Grimwade started professional life as a physiotherapist in Melbourne before becoming a management and productivity consultant in Sydney. After completing her MBA at Stern Business School N.Y.U. And moving to Hong Kong, she worked as the general manager of a recruitment company and subsequently as a university lecturer and programme leader before the handover of the colony to Chinese rule in 1997. During a 5-year stay in Jakarta she undertook freelance editing work, and then returned to Melbourne with a growing family where she was able to resume a range of management consulting assignments. She has an Applied Science degree in Physiotherapy and an MBA in International Business. Throughout these different careers, she has baked furiously, qualified as a wedding cake decorator, opened a holiday sewing school for teenagers, become the spreadsheet queen of budgeting for family and friends, and cleaned her house begrudgingly. She is quite good at French, not too bad at Indonesian and tries her hand at speaking 'Teenager' as well. Anni lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband Tim and three teenage children, none of whom listen to her. She will give them each a copy of this book.

John Simpson, aka John Kirkpatrick, aka the Man with the Donkey, was a hero of the Gallipoli campaign, though he never fired a shot in anger. He was an Englishman, yet he was typical of the young Australians who set out on a great adventure in 1915... and never came back. He was a larrikin, didn't like bosses and never had a permanent job. But when the going got tough, he was the sort of bloke you would like to have beside you. Edmund Barton

Thanks to Fred, well over a million people who were blind are able to see. He gave sight to the blind in far away places such as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, but it was his unselfish commitment to the eye health of Australian Aborigines that first made us sit up and take notice. It is often said that John Macarthur was the father of the wool industry in Australia. But he spent so much time exiled in England, leaving his good wife in charge, that she surely deserves to be acknowledged as the more important parent who enabled Australia to 'ride on the sheep's back' for so long.

Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation
295
Zaidee’s Story is directed towards both children and adults so they can think about others who are waiting for a life saving operation and a suitable match for an organ or tissue. Think about giving this gift to others so they can live a better life and in some cases, have a second chance at life. Zaidee’s gift of her organs to others will allow them to have another birthday. 1 in 5 people on the transplant waiting

Kaha the Kea is possibly the cheekiest kea in New Zeland, who gets away with everything ...or does he? Craig Smith is the performer and author of The Wonky Donkey, the biggest selling picture book in Australia in 2010. It is still amongst the top three best selling children’s picture books, outsold only by Mem Fox’s Where’s the Green Sheep and Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Author Information
In late 2007, Craig released his first kids’ album Not Just for Kids. The first track from this album - “The Wonky Donkey” - won the APRA NZ Children’s Song of the Year Award in 2008. It ended up making the top 25 songs in the children’s section of the ISC International Songwriting Contest - the world’s biggest song competition. In 2009, The Wonky Donkey was published as a book with hilarious illustrations by Craig’s friend, Katz Cowley. The pair teamed up again for 2010’s Willbee the Bumblebee, based on a childhood story told by Craig’s mother and co-author, Maureen Thompson. Like The Wonky Donkey, Craig turned it into song. All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth was written by Don Gardner and illustrated by Katz Cowley, with an accompanying CD of the story performed by Craig Smith in song. Craig’s most recent book is Kaha the Kea and again comes with a musical performance on CD. Once again, it has seen Craig top the best-sellers list for Children’s Books in New Zealand. Craig lives in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Granny sounds her bike horn and quickly takes the lead. But soon she’s out of eyesight, ‘Granny, wait for me!’ I plead. A whimsical and fun-filled story of a lively granny’s trip to the park with her grandson, which all begins with a bike race …
Author Information Sarah has always had a strong passion for words. Since graduating from university, she spent most of her career working in the city as a professional corporate writer. After relocating to a remote outback town to be with her partner, a farmer, she started writing children’s books to compensate for a shortfall at the local library. Up until now, Sarah has only shared these books with her children. Granny, Wait for Me! is Sarah’s first book to be published, with a promise of many to come in the future. Illustrator Information Anil Tortop was born and raised in Turkey. She moved to Australia in early 2011 and has been trying to get used to the local eightlegged house intruders and slithering visitors to her garden ever since. Anil also works as an animator and character/concept designer, but has been called away from this affair as her relationship with children’s books becomes more serious. Nowadays, she lives with her husband in Brisbane. In their small home studio together, they call themselves ‘Children’s Booksmiths’. Anil loves trying to make bliss balls (if she makes them well enough, she also loves eating them) and the smell of fresh books.

There’s a mouse in the house. Can you see it? Just one. Inspired by the experiences of a rural farmhouse being overtaken by mice, this picture book in rhyme is the debut work of author and illustrator Wendy McKay‐Taylor.
Author Information For Wendy McKay-Taylor, there are not enough hours in the day. Sometimes teacher, sometimes farmer, writer and artist, horse and dog trainer, Wendy travels across the states of Victoria and South Australia, honing her skills whilst working with her dogs across sheep stations. Defending her home in rural Victoria from feral bees, mosquitoes, snakes and invasions of mice (and keeping her garden alive in the face of long periods of dry weather) leaves her with a constant source of inspiration! Wendy has published works across a variety of genres and exhibited her paintings and drawings in Victoria and Tasmania. Wendy paints large canvasses in oils, draws in graphite pencil and pen and illustrates smaller works in gouache. Her family is spread far and wide but always in her thoughts, and her dogs and the adventures they share are the inspiration for her next story. Mouse Mayhem is her first picture book.

Becki vanished from our Year 7 camp last night. Went missing. Completely disappeared. It’s up to me, Cinnamon Stevens, to solve the mystery. Only one small prob. Becki and I shared a tent and I have absolutely no idea what’s happened to her. (Note to self: May need to improve powers of observation if serious about becoming a super sleuth crime buster!) This is is a REALLY good book. One of the reasons I liked it was that the police said that Becki had been found but Cinnamon did not believe it! Coco, age 11 AWESOME! I loved Cinnamon and her friends and can’t wait for their next story. Samantha, age 12 This is is a SPARKLY book! Sophie, age 10
Author Information Pauline was born in New Zealand but has lived most of her life in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne – one of the places featured in her book. She is a published playwright for children and adults. Many of her plays are available from the Australian Script Centre www.australianplays.com. To pay the bills she taught in a number of secondary schools, most recently as a Teacher- Librarian. This gave her the perfect opportunity to see the kind of books kids read, borrow and recommend to each other. She’s also been employed as a journalist, radio producer, theatre publicist and TV script assistant. Pauline regularly reviews children’s books and runs creative writing workshops for adults and children. For more information check her website: www.paulinehosking.com
