Kiss 2018 Goodbye...
Hello 2019! Life is constantly changing. As we enter this new year, it’s a reminder that we need to be endlessly evolving, adapting and being better stewards of our environment. We all take water—and sometimes life—for granted. Everything we do has a domino effect. What little changes can each of us do to reduce our carbon footprint? Recycle more? Use less plastic? How about we make a conscious effort to use less water? There are so many little things we can do to help minimize the amount of plastics and garbage we accumulate on our planet. Let’s do it together for our beautiful blue ocean and our lagoon. That’s what our annual Blue Issue is all about. I recently had the opportunity to get in the water and swim with dolphins in Key Largo at Dolphins Plus. It was truly AMAZING! I admire dolphins—I love their playfulness and the way they seem to stick together as a family unit. Check out the story on our cover photographer, Bethany Augliere. She’s a marine scientist and underwater photographer who gets to study the behavior of these amazing mammals. You’ve probably seen or heard of the Hollywood movie, Dolphin Tale, featuring Winter and Hope, two dolphins rescued from our lagoon. Both of these celebrity dolphins now reside at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Plan a visit to see them in 2019, it’s worth the drive! The sunsets on the Gulf are spectacular!
Happy New Year!

Dolphin Delight: A Glimpse Beneath the Surface It’s always a thrill to gaze out onto the Indian River Lagoon and see the dorsal fin of a dolphin breach the surface. It never gets old. Lately, it seems sightings are more and more frequent, but that shouldn’t deter our efforts to protect these highly intelligent, social creatures and the waters they call home. On average, 60 dolphins per year are found dead in the Indian River Lagoon, which stretches from Cape Canaveral to the St. Lucie Inlet in Stuart. This is due to disease, entanglement with fishing gear or crab trap lines, boat strikes, as well as unknown causes. Keeping our waterways clean, exercising responsible angling and boating, and refraining from feeding wildlife are a few examples of ways we can make a difference. On the following pages, Bethany Augliere introduces us to the Wild Dolphin Project and some of the majestic dolphins of the Bahamas with her story and stunning photography. She also explains the difference between bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins. If you’re in need of a little inspiration, turn the page. Meet Winter and Hope, the stars of Dolphin Tale and Dolphin Tale 2. These two dolphins were rescued from the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon by Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and brought to Clearwater Marine Aquarium where their recovery stories inspired two major motion pictures. As we celebrate a new year, let’s resolve to do our part to preserve and protect our wonderful waterways and the exceptional creatures that inhabit them. Little acts of kindness add up when we all pitch in!

Off the East Coast of Florida and right across the Gulf Stream in the Bahamas, we’re lucky to have a variety of marine life that live right next to shore, including sea turtles, manta rays and two species of dolphins: Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins. To learn more about these wild dolphins, such as their communication, feeding behavior,
WILD DOLPHINS OF THE BAHAMAS
movement patterns, and even their threats, Denise Herzing founded the Wild Dolphin Project, a scientific non-profit based out of Jupiter, in 1985. Since that time, the project has catalogued more than 500 individuals in the Bahamas, watched mothers become grandmothers and tracked four generations. Both spotted and bottlenose dolphins live in what’s called a community, made up of around 100 dolphins for each species. Communities are a mix of female, male, young and old dolphins of each species. While all the members of the community might come together at certain times, such as to travel, oftentimes they occur in much smaller groups, or what people might think of as a “pod.” Female dolphins tend to travel with other females in the same life stage. So, pregnant females hang out with pregnant females, moms with calves associate with other moms with calves, and juveniles hang out with other juveniles. Sometimes, an older female calf will hang out with her mom to help baby sit a new calf and get practice parenting. Males on the other hand mostly hang out in pairs. This relationship spans their lifetime, and is the equivalent of a best friend. Since 1985, Romeo was never seen without his buddy Big Gash. Their friendship spanned into their 50s, until Romeo disappeared. While the two species look similar, they do have some differences. The most obvious difference is that spotted dolphins have white and black spots all over their bodies, though they are born all grey, just like bottlenose dolphins. However, on occasion, bottlenose dolphins can have spots on their bellies. Also, compared to the relatively slender spotted dolphins, bottlenose are about a third larger in both length and weight. Unfortunately, these dolphins face daily threats. Every summer, we see animals with new chopped fins and scars, likely due to boat strikes. More and more boats mean the noise is potentially interfering with how these animals communicate, as well as disturbing them during rest or important activities, like nursing and mating. Now, more than ever, it’s important to continue studying these marine mammals as they face increasing threats due to human activity, such as noise pollution, marine pollution and climate change. Learn more at WildDolphinProject.org. Bethany Augliere is a dolphin biologist with the Wild Dolphin Project based out of Jupiter, Florida, with a background in wildlife and marine science. She also works as a freelance writer and photographer. You can view her work at BethanyAugliere.com or on

Two bottlenose males harass a young spotted dolphin male. Spotted dolphins are smaller than bottlenose, and it takes about six spotted dolphins to fend off one bottlenose dolphin. Researchers with the WDP aren’t exactly sure why these two species fight, but it could be a way to prevent hybridization between the two species.

slipped into the water this past summer, as I have for nearly a decade, to document a community of wild Atlantic spotted dolphins in the Bahamas. They whistled excitedly while circling beneath me, buzzing me with their sonar. Then I noticed that a few of them were playing with a piece of plastic. Sadly, this is not an uncommon sight. I’ve taken flip flops, balloons, plastic bags and many other pieces of marine debris away from these dolphins, which could wind up killing them if ingested or entangling them. Eventually, I realized that it wasn’t enough to just research dolphins as a scientist; I wanted to share their stories and the threats they face. In 1985, Denise Herzing founded the Wild Dolphin Project to study the lives of two species of dolphins residing in the Bahamas: the Atlantic spotted dolphin and bottlenose dolphin. She immersed herself in their world, just as Jane Goodall did 58 years ago with the chimpanzees of Tanzania. Since the project’s start, researchers have cataloged more than 500 individual dolphins and published more than 50 scientific papers about these dolphins, ranging from discoveries on what they eat to aggressive interactions and the devastating impact of hurricanes. I joined the project in 2009, when I started graduate school at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton to conduct research under Denise’s guidance. Being a biologist was always the plan. Every summer, I spent my time living on the 65-foot power catamaran waking up with the sun to swim with wild dolphins and collect data. With their unique spot patterns, scars, nicks and notches missing out their fins, and even their personalities, eventually, each dolphin became as recognizable as a friend. For instance, I could always identify Nassau instantly, even from the bow of the boat, because her dorsal fin was missing its tip. One of my favorite moments at sea happened in the summer of 2012. We had just arrived in the Bahamas, after crossing over from West Palm Beach. It was a perfect day with clear skies and glassy seas. Then suddenly, a small group of dolphins came leaping toward the bow. We slipped in with cameras, video cameras and underwater microphones. It was Nassau, and she swam over and slowly began to circle our group. She also had a surprise: a new calf. It felt as if she was introducing us to one another, perhaps proudly flaunting what she had accomplished over winter,
VERO’S #1 MEDICAL DAY SPA
NOW OFFERING THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER TREATMENTS FOR 2019 while we were stuck behind desks analyzing our data. Here was a wild mom trusting enough to bring us her new baby. It was a moment I’ll never forget. We named the little male calf Nautilus. I saw him this past summer, now speckled with black spots and hanging out with other juvenile males, no longer dependent on his mom. To me, each dolphin is an individual. Some are curious, some are bold and some are shy. My hope is that if I can help people connect to these dolphins, it might inspire positive action toward the environment. Now, I continue to document the lives of the dolphins, but also share stories of other threatened marine life, like sea turtles and manta rays. Our cover photo is by Bethany Augliere. altwater Brewery was founded in 2013 by a group of Florida natives—surfers and fishermen—with a mission to not only brew good beer, but to give back to our oceans. As Delray Beach’s first and only local production microbrewery, Saltwater offers a tasting room and beer garden onsite, and hosts regular events like trivia, live music, food trucks, paint nights and more. They proudly support ocean-centric foundations such as Coastal Conservation Association Florida, Surfrider Foundation, The Ocean Foundation, MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, 4Ocean, Gumbo Limbo, and Billfish Foundation through charity benefits hosted in their tasting room, beer and merchandise donations, beach cleanups and other community involvement. Using only pure and natural ingredients, each style of handcrafted beer and corresponding name is inspired by the ocean. More than 12 styles are typically available on tap in the tasting room, and five styles are currently available in cans (Screamin’ Reels IPA, Sea Cow Milk Stout, LocAle, Passion Pit, Bone-A-Fied Blonde). You can find their IPA and Milk Stout distributed statewide. Saltwater Brewery was the first brewery to package their beer with the Eco Six Pack Ring – the first ecofriendly six pack ring made from by-product waste and other compostable materials. Do You Know the Scoop on Your Dog’s Poop?
T
alking about dog poop might not be the most chic conversation starter, but it’s what Alexis Peralta of Indian River County’s Stormwater Division is determined to talk about. Carrying a poop emoji on her keychain, she uses this little symbol to elicit giggles, questioning faces and grossed out adults to get them to ask her “WHY?” Why does she carry around a poop emoji? It’s the perfect conversation starter to educate everyone about WHY they should be picking up after their dog. Many people have been told to pick up after their pets for decades. The problem is that most of these people do not understand the importance behind removing the poop and rarely follow through. Yes poop is gross. It’s true we don’t want to step in it, and we don’t want to watch our other pets sniffing it out. BUT there’s more to the story than just “eww poop is gross.” Dog poop is a stormwater pollutant that aides in algal blooms in our Indian River Lagoon and adjoining coastal waterways. This inconspicuous waste they leave behind is full of nutrients and bacteria that when washed to local water bodies, dissolve and release into the water. Algae fuels off of excess nutrients in the water and when we allow too many nutrients to enter the stormwater (from dog and cow poop, fertilizer, grass clippings, etc.), the algae will bloom and cause many different issues in our ailing and fragile ecosystems. A statistic from the Smithsonian Marine Station in 2012 recorded that 83 tons of dog poop are left within the Indian River Lagoon Watershed daily. DAILY! Now this watershed spans the five counties around the IRL east of I-95, but 83 tons of poop every single day left outside is a gigantic pile of poop waiting to be washed away when it rains! Sometimes, it’s hard to wrap our heads around the fact that our dog can defecate in our own yard and it can wash miles away to the IRL, but this is how stormwater gets so polluted and causes grander issues in the long run, because it is pulling pollutants from all over these counties and flowing down our canals and stormdrains to the lagoon. Next time you take your dog for a walk, remember that dogs would not have naturally lived in this area, especially in the number we import and
breed them, therefore their excrement is not a natural part of the ecosystem and cannot fit into the circle of life without polluting. This excess is how it has come to be a large part of stormwater pollution today. It’s key for people to understand how it’s polluting our waterways, why it should be picked up, and also how to tell others to do the same. Alexis teaches more than 500 students every year about the many factors polluting our local stormwater and what each child can do every day to help. The biggest takeaway for these pollution preventers is learning how to educate their family, friends and neighbors about dog poop and advocate for the environment they love! We all love our dogs and most people do not want to pollute intentionally, so it’s up to all of us to learn the truth and share our understanding and knowledge with the world. Scoop the poop to save our Indian River Lagoon! Learn more at IRCStormwater.com.

W
ell, it’s been a chilly winter so far. The fishing has been pretty good and the water clarity is really clear. The health of our lagoon is vital to the health of our fishery so let’s all do our part to keep it clean. Pompano, Spanish mackerel and bluefish will be the main beach fish to target. In the lagoon, look for the “Gator” speckled sea trout in the shallows sunning on the nicer, calm days. Many other fish will be heading for deeper water, so keep that in mind. As always, stay safe out there and tight lines. Remember to catch and release so future anglers can enjoy what we’ve enjoyed for so many years. Until next time, this is Capt. Christian Yergens.

H
ope. There was a very long season in my life that I despised that word. I refused even to use it in sentences. I remember in the beginning of losing hope, my friend, trying to encourage me told me that if I didn’t have hope that she was going to have it for me. So, I let her take it, I didn’t want it. It was too painful to hope. My husband and I tried and tried to start a family and dead ends met us at every turn, like one of those mazes that only has one way to get through and you have to figure out how to navigate it. I finally understood what the Bible meant, “hope deferred makes the heart sick.” Well, I certainly was becoming sick. Sick with depression and bitterness, which in turn, stole joy from the life that was right in front of me. I don’t remember the exact day or moment that I became OK with the thought of being at peace if I never had children. However, I do remember on our third attempt to adopt a child, getting a phone call in the middle of the night informing us the birth mama had lost the baby. I remember crying my heart and lungs out on my hotel bed along with my husband, then hearing a songbird just outside our window in the dead of the night which was both literal and figurative. That sweet bird’s song became like an anthem to me. Though I still despised the word hope, I decided soon after that I would get the word “hope” tattooed on my back to be a reminder that it was still there even if I could not feel it or see it. I began pursuing life. We both did. My husband and I packed up our lives and moved to Florida from our home in Seattle, Washington for a new job opportunity and whatever else was on the horizon for us. I’m not going to say it was all rainbows and butterflies, because it wasn’t. It was hard. There was this deep, deep ache and question of “why” and a yearning to become a mama. But I began believing the best, so yes, I was hoping again. Not for what my husband and I wanted, but what God wanted for us. We believed that God placed the desire to be parents in both of our hearts at an early age. I trusted that if God had created me, then he knew me best and knew what the best was for me and my life. I gave my deep desire to be a mama to him and trusted, plain and simple. I trusted him if he chose not to make us parents and I trusted him if he did choose that for us, but I knew I’d be OK no matter what. Let’s back up about 17 years. May I tell you a story? I don’t believe in luck, I believe in divine promises and miracles. I believe there are no coincidences. My husband, Roy and I have believed this our entire 17-year relationship, starting with how we first met as strangers in a city park. For some reason, since first married, Roy has noticed 11:11a.m. and p.m. almost daily. We’ve gotten in the fun little habit every time we see it to call out 11-11! Or, text each other 11:11. It has become a message to each of us saying “I love you, thinking about you.” Several years ago, my brother-in-law had been praying for us and came across the verse in the Bible, Hebrews 11:11, “It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise.” He knew he needed to share this with us. We held that promise very close to our hearts and found peace for whatever God had for our future, however it would look. Fast forward to October 18, 2018, the day our daughter was born. Waiting anxiously in the waiting room of the hospital we received text updates from our lawyer, I grew more and more nervous and excited. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com
I kept looking at my phone for updates. I checked the time, and it was 10:58a.m., I looked up with sheer wonder and excitement in my eyes and said to my family and friends “Guys! Wouldn’t that be so cool of God to allow Nevaeh to be born at 11:11a.m.?!” Excitement in the room burst through the roof at that incredible idea. As the time on my iPhone turned 11:11 we all fell silent in thought and prayer. I kept praying “God let it be, let it be.” I looked at the time again and it was 11:12. Several seconds later we received a flood of texts with pictures of our baby girl and the announcement that she had been born at 11:11a.m.! Coincidence and luck? I think not! Without a shadow of doubt this was God’s wink to us telling us “she is yours, this is my promise to you.” NEVAEH: sent from heaven ESTHER: born at such a time as this HOPE: bringing hope and life Hope can come back. Hope will come back. Hope does come back and if you don’t have hope right now, let me have it FOR you until you find it again. SMART Recovery Depression, Anxiety and More
J
ust shy of three years ago, I felt like I had lost myself. I’ve been dealing with depression and anxiety since I was a child. For more than 20 years, I saw therapists and psychiatrists and I just couldn’t seem to figure things out. I began to self-medicate with alcohol and marijuana because I thought it was my only option. Once I realized that drugs and alcohol didn’t work either, I made the life-changing decision to seek help and ended up in treatment at Beachside Rehab. For me, alcohol was a negative behavior that I tried to use to fix a problem (my depression and anxiety). Through the help of the amazing staff, I was able to practice new coping skills like mindfulness, SMART Recovery, and therapeutic recreational activities. By practicing these modalities, I regained my identity and began to feel like myself again. I was introduced to both the traditional 12-step model and SMART Recovery at Beachside. I chose SMART because it has more of a scientific approach rather than a spiritual approach, which I was able to better relate to. I also accredit much of my success to getting out and being active through therapeutic activities. Being on the water on my paddle board is the most peaceful, therapeutic place I can be. I’m able to relax, enjoy the beauty of nature and leave all my worries back on land. Today, I’m proud to say that I continue to use these tools in my daily life and I feel authentic happiness and peace that I haven’t felt since I was a small child. I’m also fortunate to have a loving family who has supported and encouraged me along the way. I’m grateful to now work for Beachside as the recreation counselor, SMART Recovery facilitator, and IOP manager. Now, I have the opportunity to take clients kayaking and paddle boarding, teach a SMART Recovery group, and help clients transition into sober living. All the things that were so vital to my recovery continue to impact others through their recovery! Throughout the week, I take clients out on the water to experience the same peace and relaxation that was (and still is) so essential to my healing. I also introduce clients, who haven’t been able to stay sober through the traditional 12 steps, to SMART Recovery as an additional support tool. It’s very rewarding to see others recover from their addictive behaviors as I did.
Beachside provides individualized recovery for drug and alcohol addiction. You’ll find compassionate, committed therapists who walk with you on the journey to recovery. Our highly trained, accredited staff treats the whole person, addressing underlying issues that can contribute to addiction. We offer SMART Recovery as well as 12-steps and holistic treatments that give you the tools to live a fulfilling, healthy life.

Making Waves S.E.A. a Difference Environmental Services
I
n less than a year, new Indian River-based environmental organization, S.E.A. a Difference, is making waves in the community by staying true to their roots and loyal to their mission. Executive Director and Founder, Missy Weiss, considers S.E.A. a Difference a grassroots environmental organization, created and sculpted by the environmental needs and wants of the community. The group focuses on the conservation and protection of Florida’s fragile coastal ecosystems through stewardship, education and community action. By targeting these three approaches the organization provides people of all ages with meaningful opportunities to connect with the environment, enhance place-based knowledge and understanding of our local natural resources, and instigate environmental enhancement through collaborative and cooperative efforts. “Understanding that stewardship and scientific literacy can be modeled and taught at any age, our debut educational initiative was Nature Play for Preschoolers,” Missy explains. Going on its fourth season, this weekly class provides a comfortable outdoor atmosphere for children to explore, discover, inquire and learn about nature and the world around them by
Wine
combining the power of hands-on learning with play-based activities. “Research shows that children who spend time outdoors show tremendous health, developmental and emotional benefits and therefore, we support any and all opportunities to allow people of all ages, especially our youngest explorers, time outside.” S.E.A. a Difference firmly believes that all students need to be given the opportunity to become stewards of the environment, learn about the complex ecosystems in their backyards, and be allowed to be a part of the solution when it comes to environmental problem-solving. Therefore, the next program launched was “A Day in the Life of the Indian River Lagoon.” This annual, community-based, citizen science and experiential research program is designed to have students, teachers and environmental experts collaborate in the collection of water quality and biological inventories along the Indian River Lagoon. On October 4, more than 30 schools, 30 environmental organizations, and 1,000+ students from Volusia County down to Martin County, partnered to simultaneously collect scientific data at various sites along the 156-mile stretch of the lagoon. Students used hands-on field techniques to collect various chemical, physical and biological parameters of the lagoon to determine how their local piece of the estuary fits into the larger ecosystem. The results will help students build a better understanding of their local ecosystem’s ecological health and the relationship their site has to the entire watershed; essentially creating an environmental report card of the lagoon. The ADIL event is significant in highlighting this critical relationship and will help ensure that the next generation of citizens and community leaders develop a lifelong appreciation, understanding and investment in the preservation of this ecosystem and our natural world at large. S.E.A. a Difference also offers several other customized educational and citizen science programs, workshops and classes, many of which support the mission of community collaboration and are created with the notion that environmentalism is a team sport. Family and adult programs include bat and bird house workshops, herb pallet garden, family nature hikes, weekly science/nature homeschool classes, after-school programs and more. The organization is currently seeking homeowners, businesses, schools and community members to participate in its citizen science program, Miles for Monarchs. This ambitious initiative calls citizens to plant over a mile’s worth of native milkweed to assist the rebound of the Monarch butterfly population, which has plummeted in the last two decades due to habitat loss. Every milkweed plant can help prolong the future of this symbolic and critical pollinator.

ne of our local breweries is making its television debut! “I remember after reading the email that I thought it was a hoax,” recalls Val Bing, co-owner of Orchid Island Brewery. Fortunately, said email was no joke. Instead, that initial correspondence led to the national television debut of Vero Beach’s own Orchid Island Brewery. A new series called tasteMAKERS launched on PBS this fall. The 13-episode show highlights authentic makers from around the country who craft small-batch artisan products. Created and hosted by Emmy-winner Cat Neville, the documentary-style production aims not only to explore the passion and creative process behind the food and drinks we all enjoy, but also to reveal the faces responsible for each brand. Funny enough, it was through Cat’s parents, who happen to call Vero home, that she came across OIB. Her father grew up here, her parents were married here and she herself travels to Vero every chance she gets. “When I developed the tasteMAKERS series, I knew I wanted to feature a brewery. When I learned about OIB and its approach to citrus-infused beers, I had to include them in the season.” So, she sent an email asking Val and her husband Alden if they would agree to appear on an episode. They were intrigued about the proposal after hearing Cat’s description for the show. Cat illustrated her vision as wanting to uncover the unique story behind each featured maker through questions like, “How did they learn their craft? What drives their passion? How do these makers balance creating a good product while maintaining authenticity and high quality?” “Saying yes to Cat was definitely going out of our comfort zone, but what drove us to say yes was knowing that our community was also going to be part of the show with us,” says Val. And so with that official ‘yes’, Cat and her crew descended onto Vero for a four-day shoot where Cat and the Bings filmed a visit to a local grove, attended a beer festival and even brewed some beer together. Authenticity is a key theme of the show. OIB’s unique narrative is defined through its connection with Florida’s rich citrus heritage. As a kid, Alden used to climb the citrus trees in his neighborhood. Now, he relies on those trees to produce the very fruit used to create that distinct OIB taste. “Our grounds for creating OIB have stayed authentic through brewing with the world’s finest citrus locally grown here in Indian River County,” says Alden. According to Cat, beer nerds will love this episode. However, she thinks the appeal of this particular episode goes beyond people who are into craft brewing. “Alden and Val are quintessential makers, focused on not just creating a product that they are proud of, but also supporting and being an integral part of their community.”
helsea’s Gourmet presents its reoccurring seasonal series of Thursday night events. As in previous years, the main attraction is the wine tastings with certified sommeliers and other industry professionals. This year’s series will include a number of cooking classes with the new young chef, Patrick Baker. Each week will feature a different theme (bubbly wine tasting the week before New Year’s; couple’s cooking class on Valentine’s Day), but the expectation for great food, wine and hospitality will remain a constant throughout. These events are a great opportunity to meet new people and learn about the amazing products available at Chelsea’s Gourmet. Moreover, the establishment’s owners and management are frequently in attendance and the team is happy to share more about their community and value-driven mission and approach. The price is right at $10, so start the weekend early on a Thursday! Stop in and see why Chelsea’s Gourmet is where Vero Beach shops for the good life. Interior Design Trends for 2019
J
ust as with New Year’s resolutions, the new year for interior design means we see an attempt to rid ourselves of the bad habits from yesterday and look towards fresh ideas. I’m not suggesting you need to set fire to anything you own that was a part of the “out” trends from years past, but I think it’s always good to know what’s on the horizon. Last year, the color experts at Pantone named Ultra Violet the color of the year for 2018. Pantone takes color very seriously and described this purple as representing “the mysteries of the cosmos and the discoveries beyond where we are now.” I feel like that’s a lot of pressure to put on a color and if I’m being honest, would describe it as very similar to the color of grape soda. For 2019, they announced Living Coral as color of the year. Well, in Florida, coral has been living large for years as a great accent color. This coral, however, is much more saturated than the pastel version we often see. I think it would be great as small pops of color in a light, neutral scheme. So, try it in accent pillows or accessories to update your space. In the world of furniture, the American midcentury revival has lasted for what feels like a century. While the sleek lines of the storage pieces are great to mix into most designs, the use of it head to toe is a bit thematic and
makes me feel like I’m on the set of Mad Men. In 2019, we’re seeing the introduction of Italian midcentury which is very different than its American cousin. It involves curved furniture, delicate lines and bold colors. The company CB2, owned by the popular Crate and Barrel, has come out with a line that gives a nod to this movement and would be a great way to inexpensively mix in some new pieces to your existing design. In 2018, the interior design world also seemed to suddenly discover the color cool grey. While not an entirely new concept, it became so popular as a wall color that the warm beiges and taupes of yesteryear seemed nearly as dated as your grandmother’s avocado refrigerator. This year, the idea of subtle white walls is in the forecast. This is a trend I can definitely get behind as white walls are classic and less likely to fall out of favor like our dear friend taupe. For more ideas on the best whites to use, read my article in the next edition of Portfolio, “Which White is Right?”

Healthy Detox A Safe Way to Renew and Refuel Your Body
T
he advent of a new year brings about a feeling of renewal. For many, making a commitment to better health tops the list of resolutions. One way to reset and refuel your body is through a cleanse or detox. These programs range from the extreme to the reasonable and typically fall into three categories: juice cleanse, colon cleanse and liver cleanse. Juice cleanses are quite rigorous and consist of only juices for several days. The juice consumed should be made from green superfoods like celery, kale, broccoli or spinach and sweetened with a low-glycemic fruit like apple. The juices should be pressed and not store-bought to ensure no added sugar. A juice cleanse gives the digestive process a rest as no solid food is consumed; however, adequate protein is missing and blood sugar can be difficult to regulate. Weight loss will occur due to severely restricted calories, but the weight usually returns quickly when people resume their usual diet. Colon cleanses became popular as a way to clean out the waste buildup that could be hampering health. However, many commercially available colon cleanse products include herbs like senna or cascara sagrada that cause intestinal cramping and loose stools. With the artificial induction of strong peristalsis over a period of time, the colon may become sluggish in resuming its normal function once the supplements are discontinued. A proper gut detoxification program requires management by a knowledgeable healthcare professional. Gut microbiome stool testing must be conducted in order to accurately assess gut microbes. The GI-MAP test by Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory is covered by Medicare and uses PCR technology to determine the presence of both good and bad bacteria, yeast and parasites and to measure specific markers related to gut inflammation. Treatment involves
antimicrobial herbs to kill the bad bugs, charcoal and clay to bind and eliminate toxins, and a high-quality probiotic to restore good bacteria. Liver cleanses are perhaps the most practical and useful as they intend to reduce the toxic burden on the body for a period of time. During a liver cleanse, processed foods, alcohol, sugar, dairy, gluten and most grains are removed from the diet. An organic protein shake is consumed for one or two meals and the remaining meal(s) consist of fresh veggies, healthy fats and lean protein that is grass fed, wild caught or cage free. Food must be organic to reduce pesticide and chemical exposure. Weight loss will likely occur as a result of eating a clean, low-glycemic diet and fewer calories. However, liver cleanses are less extreme and can be maintained for a longer period of time which helps shape better eating patterns. Additionally, liver cleanses stimulate the release of stored toxins from fat cells so weight comes off more easily. Supplements are utilized to support the detoxification pathways of the liver and include milk thistle, dandelion, green tea and glutathione. Other detox therapies which enhance results include dry brushing, sauna and epsom salt baths. At Indian River Acupuncture, we offer practitioner-supervised detox and weight loss programs. For more information, call (772) 564-8383 or visit IndianRiverAcupuncture.com.

Chair Time with The Joneses, DMD Four Habits for a Healthy Mouth in 2019
W
e all have hopes of sticking to our New Year’s resolution. However, many of those resolutions will fall short come summer time. Turning a new leaf can be tricky, but sticking with that resolution can lead to years of health benefits. So, if you want to keep those teeth and gums healthy for years to come, these four habits are a great way to start.
Schedule an Appointment with a Dentist Although it may sound simple, many people do not keep routine appointments with their dentist. According to the ADA, approximately 33 percent of the population does not see the dentist on a yearly basis. Keeping those semi-annual dental visits not only reduce your chances of tooth decay, the exam also screens for early stages of oral cancer. Dump the Tobacco Aside from the negative effects tobacco has on your body, its use nearly doubles your chance of developing gum disease during your life. Set your goal and pick a date. There will be cravings to overcome along the way. One of the worst things you can do to combat those cravings is to eat sugary snacks. That leads us into our next habit…
a hidden gem on florida's treasure coast.
Cut Back on Sugar Who doesn’t have a sweet tooth? A 2014 study by BMC Public Health found a direct link between the amount of sugar a person eats and the amount of decay on their teeth. If you can’t avoid those sugary snacks, try to find snacks that contain the ingredient xylitol. Bacteria which cause decay can’t digest xylitol and die as result of consuming it. Don’t worry it’s completely safe for humans. Commit to Flossing We’ve all heard we need to floss more, right? Brushing is a great way to clean the front and back of your teeth. But how do we clean in between our teeth? The gold standard is flossing. Did you know flossing can improve your systemic and heart health? Cadaver studies have shown plaque in arteries which cause heart disease also contain bacteria from our mouth. So, start flossing to keep not only your teeth and gums healthy, but also your heart!

Essential BlueJay Honoring the Natural Beauty That Surrounds Us
January 15-27 Meet the Nowaks of Buffalo, NY. in this delightfully spirited comedy that started with a miraculous appearance in an urban barbershop!
M
y creations are my passion. I put thought and love into everything that I make. My intention is to transfer a feeling of peace and tranquility into each and every product. I’ve always been more of a naturalist. I began as a small child by spending time with my father fishing and being outdoors. Nature has always been something I turn to for grounding, inspiration and my personal well-being. About seven years ago, essential oils became part of my family’s everyday life. The health and well-being of my young children became a top priority for me. I wasn’t satisfied with the toxins that have become so mainstream. I found myself creating homemade remedies for the children, along with making remedies for other family members and friends. I strive to make products that help support a healthy life and lifestyle including natural remedies, candles, room sprays and anything just plain therapeutic to the soul. All products are made with natural ingredients, essential oils and nothing else. Before I realized it, my part-time passion began going in the direction of a small business. This turn of events was exhilarating to me. I love sharing my knowledge in order to help my friends and family to obtain a naturally healthy way of life. Two years ago, Essential BlueJay was born. The basis of this name evolved in a twofold manner. The “Essential” part of it was to incorporate the essential oils that I have chosen to use in everything. As for the “BlueJay” part, it is a more bittersweet pairing. Four years ago, my father passed away unexpectedly. Not only was he my first love, he was the person that instilled a love of nature in me. Every day since he passed, I have a blue jay that graces me with its presence. I chose to name my business in honor of both my father and the natural beauty that surrounds us. I’ve learned that life is short, you should enjoy what you do and try to pass along a little joy by sharing your passion with others.

Kirsten Kowalski Artfully Creating Fantasy from Reality
Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of the Arts and Birmingham Museums Trust
February 9, 2019 - May 5, 2019 HOLMES, SCHUMANN AND TITELMAN GALLERIES
S
ometimes fantasy and reality fuse together to form a work of art. That’s exactly the case for Kirsten Kowalski, a fine art photographer and digital artist in Vero Beach. Her love for photography began when she was 10 years old when her grandmother gave her a fully manual Canon 35mm camera and two lenses. She dreamed of traveling the world and photographing exotic people and places. She earned her BA in photojournalism in 1993 and having just married, decided traveling the world would take her too far from those she loved. Instead, she put her cameras away and earned a law degree in 1996. After realizing she simply couldn’t put away her true passion, Kirsten set up a dark room in her basement and began photographing friends, family and her own children part-time as a hobby and a way to express her creativity. In 2004, she opened a portrait studio in Alpharetta, Georgia where she specialized in high school senior portraits and photography of women. In 2014, Kirsten moved with her family to Vero Beach. Inspired by the natural beauty of the area, she re-focused her passion on creating fine art landscape images. Recently, she discovered she had more complex stories she wanted to tell. So, she began combining her love of portrait photography with her landscape work, using her Photoshop skills to create digital art composites. These fantasy-like scenes tell the story of not only the person in the image, but of the environment and the animals with which humans co-exist. A lover of nature and the ocean, Kirsten incorporates sea creatures and underwater scenes in much of her work. Her inspiration for these images comes from personal exploration and each is a result of a creative process during which Kirsten discovers the story she is telling as she goes.

Door of Opportunity
T
obias “Toby” Hayes doesn’t distinguish himself as an artist. Most days you’ll find him renovating homes in meticulous fashion. The contractor in him has a hard time “letting go” when it comes to art, but admits there is great overlap in the creative process between his day job and studio work. His latest piece is no exception. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Toby’s parents immigrated to the U.S. when he was a year old. He grew up in Winter Park, Florida, but a deep connection to the ocean and profound love for surfing brought his family to Vero Beach in 2004. His son was quickly gaining traction competing in the amateur surfing world; relocation to the coast confirmed their decision. An oil painter for 20+ years, art isn’t foreign to Toby. As a carpenter, he is exceptionally talented, but it’s his attention to detail and command of composition that helped propel his “side” career of creating furniture and art from various types of wood. Passionate about his day job but needing a personal creative outlet, Toby found working in his own studio is fulfilling in a different way. The source of this new sacred inspiration was cultivated from the culmination of a long-term relationship. Intrigued by the possibility of working with resin as part of an exterior custom front door, Toby found with his personal relationship ending and his boys, now older and more independent, he had time to pursue his creative vision. “I found myself at a point in time where I was free from personal attachments and the inspiration came,” he said. That vision was for a beachside home custom exterior front door, beginning with live edge wood,
lacquered with the sheen of tinted epoxy resin reminiscent of seawater and customized with coastal treasures. The door would catch the light and allow it to pass through, without sacrificing function, security or privacy. In his free time, Toby found himself in front of a cedar slab that was beginning to take the shape of the door he dreamed of. He chose cedar for its character. The “ugliest” piece was the most attractive to him for its grain and portals. The imperfections and openings allow him to float rare elements in the resin. Working on the door was a major source of therapy for Toby as he combed the beaches and river for natural resources. He knew the elements of the earth must be unique and specific. In his quest, he asked a friend to bring back coral from Wake Island because of its unique appearance. Sea urchins and shells from those shores were collected, along with ancient aircraft pieces from WWII, their remnants now surrendered from the tide. These manmade pieces, along with nature’s creations, were added to the resin in the spaces of the raw wood. “I’m so specific about where I want the particular items together in the door, but they’re still abstract groups and combinations—not uniform patterns.” “When building the door, I was unknowingly providing myself therapy to get through rough times. There’s a lot of symbolism there, the closing of a door to the past and creating a new one, opening to the future. I’m learning where the possibilities really are. I’m only getting started with the creation of doors.”

Nature and Forest Therapy Wander into Wellness
F
orest bathing is gaining popularity worldwide for the health benefits it provides. Fear not! It’s accessible to everyone and doesn’t involve nudity or a bathtub in the middle of the woods. Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese practice of “forest bathing,” began in the 1980s as the tech boom sky rocketed, which was paralleled by a staggering rise in physical and mental illness. Forest bathing was employed as a form of Japanese healing medicine and preventative health care. Although our practice is inspired by Shinrin-Yoku, this form of forest therapy refers to spending time in nature in a way that invites healing for both us, our fraught ecosystems, and our community. Scientific studies have proven that spending time in nature deeply enhances wellness, creativity and happiness. In fact, many trees produce organic compounds called phytoncides, a natural defense against disease and parasites. Humans reap the rewards when they breathe in these compounds which boost our natural killer (NK) cells, helping to fight diseases like cancer. The practice of nature and forest therapy emphasizes the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in a forest or natural environment. Nature and forest therapy walks are a wonderful form of self-care for all ages. With the help of a guide certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy, guests are led through a series of invitations during a leisurely walk on a gentle trail or pathway. Walks typically last two to three hours and participants have the opportunity to slow down, be present and engage their many senses. The group gathers for council discussions after each invitation, a way of learning from and teaching each other while discussing this shared experience. Walks culminate in a tea ceremony, another element of sharing and community-building. “After the walk, I felt calm, peaceful, less busy in my mind, like I had released some self-induced pressure,” says Stuart native, Elena Nolden, after a forest therapy walk. “I have a lot of self-expectations and I felt released from that.” It’s amazing what nature reveals when we give ourselves permission to slow down, quiet our minds and awaken our senses. L
et’s do a simple exercise. Read the following sentence: The sparkly red slug flew over the blue tower and into the frigid orange bucket. Did that make sense? Not a bit. What’s important is that you were able to read the sentence. Now, place that exact sentence in front of a third grader and ask them to read it. Unfortunately, you may be surprised by how many are unable to complete the task. Currently only 37 percent of kids in the U.S. are reading on grade level by the time they finish third grade. Let that sink in for a moment. After years of research, studies have proven that the third grade is a critical point in development and a crucial indicator of a child’s future. This staggering statistic has placed a heavy emphasis on establishing sound early reading habits for children around the country. Since 2010, Indian River County has made a concerted effort to raise both the literacy level amongst elementary students as well as help to prepare pre-kindergarten students through many different endeavors. The newest venture launched this past fall with the debut of Moonshot Radio. In collaboration with Moonshot Literacy Moment of Indian River County, Planet Vero, PNC’s Grow Up Great initiative, and Kindergarten Readiness Collaborative, the new weekly program hit the airwaves with information aplenty. Hosted by Dr. Nivea Torres, the executive director of KRC, each episode begins with the warm introduction “Greetings and welcome to Moonshot Radio, where every moment is an opportunity to learn.” Learning is precisely

the goal as each 25-minute episode aims to cover early childhood development, education and literacy through conversations with a variety of guests. While the topics range wide, the specifics of programs readily available to both children and families in our community are explained. The very first episode kicked off with guest Kerry Bartlett, founding board member of KRC, who spoke passionately about the collaborative effort of all the partners working together to develop a high quality early childhood system focused on education. Bartlett also highlighted the concentrated focus of carrying out the KRC vision that children be prepared both socially and emotionally for kindergarten. Other episodes include conversations with retired superintendent, Dr. Fran Adams, who explained the origins of the Moonshot Literacy Moment and the need for schools and community to work together. Barbara Hammond, CEO and co-founder of The Learning Alliance, discussed how to involve the community, train leaders, and offered tips for parents on what they should be doing to help their children develop certain skills necessary for success. Tara Wright, the executive director of Buggy Bunch, joined the show to share the importance of providing support for local moms and the free programming her organization offers.

athan and I met in October of 2014. We were introduced by some mutual friends at a bar in college. I had just moved to Jacksonville that semester, so I was eager to make as many friends as possible. As soon as Nathan and I met we immediately clicked. We had the same sense of goofy humor and creepily finished each other’s sentences. As perfect of a match we may have been, we remained friends for months, just getting to know one another and appreciating each other’s special qualities. It wasn’t until January of 2015 that we went on our first date. The dynamic of our relationship completely shifted in one night from a carefree, being able to say whatever was on the top of our heads, to sweaty palms and nervous stutters. That’s when I knew he was the one. From that moment on, the rest was history. Nathan and I were dating for about three years when he planned a trip over the New Year’s holiday to Kauai with his parents, along with my parents. Kauai was my dream vacation with all the nature and hiking, I couldn’t wait! What I didn’t know was Nathan and our families were plotting out our engagement.

January-February 2019
On December 31, 2017, we climbed to the top of Pihea Trail and that’s where Nathan popped the question. It was so special and more than I could have ever imagined. The very next day, I scheduled an appointment for when we got home from Hawaii at The Glen Venue in Glen St. Mary, Florida, right outside of Jacksonville. I knew about the venue through social media and it was everything I wanted in a wedding venue. The Glen Venue was originally a nursery back in the early 1900s, founded by George L. Tabber. Our wedding was at the Mathis house on the property and it was magical! This simple backyard wedding backed up to the tree line, making my fairy garden dream wedding possible. November 3, 2018, arrived and it couldn’t have been more perfect. My wedding day was something I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little girl. If you’d asked me back then, I would’ve told you how magnificent it was going to be. What I couldn’t have told you was how every detail, down to the man I was marrying, was more perfect than I could have ever imagined. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

ver catch yourself feeling silly for talking to your dog when they can’t talk back? We’ve all been there, but wouldn’t it be amazing if they could talk back? Well, they actually can! Your dog tries communicating with you every day and understanding what they’re saying can make your bond even stronger.
The Importance of Dog Talk Just like humans, dogs experience physical and emotional problems that can impact their health. Understanding how dogs communicate with humans is essential to helping them out when they’re suffering and for learning what makes them happiest. Plus, since communication is the key to all relationships, understanding doggie communication will have you and your dog feeling closer than ever. To help you understand dog talk better, we’ve got some of the most common forms of doggie communication and what they mean for you, right here. Head Tilt The adorable look your dog gives you as they tilt their head is more than just being cute. A head tilt is your dog’s way of letting you know they’re trying to understand you better. Through head tilting, dogs can pick up on more auditory information, and it can help them tune in to familiar verbal cues. Head tilting can also help them focus on your tone and figure out how you’re feeling.

Staring We’d all love to think that our dogs stare at us because of how much they love us, and while this might sometimes be true, staring usually means they want something. They could want anything from a bite of your tasty snack to a walk. While staring is generally a good thing, it’s important to remember that in an aggressive situation direct eye contact usually means a challenge. Tail Positions As you’ve probably noticed, dogs move their tails in many different ways, and for the most part, they all have different messages too. A tall tail means your dog is feeling mighty confident. If your dog’s tail is wagging along with their entire body that means excitement. Wagging without the rest of the body means anticipation and thinking. A relaxed tail means a calm dog and a tail tucked between the legs means that your dog is feeling scared. These are just some of the many ways your dog talks with their tail! Trashing the Place Ever come home to a disaster in your living room when the only one home all day was your dog? While it’s easy to get frustrated when this happens, especially if
Panting is how dogs cool down. But, if your dog is panting when there’s no physical activity or warm temperatures involved, this can be a sign of anxiety, excitement, or even illness. Showing your dog a little love when they’re panting anxiously is usually all they need to calm down. But, if panting is paired with other symptoms it might be time to visit the vet. Verbal Communication Dogs communicate with us frequently through body language, but they also communicate verbally. Howling might signal loneliness, that your dog wants attention, or that they’re not feeling the best. Growling can mean disapproval or be a warning signal. Multiple rapid barks is usually an alarm, but when your dog barks once it’s generally just a way of saying “hey!”

If you’re interested in investing, there are three things you should remember: Time is money.
The earlier you start investing, the more opportunity you will have to grow your investments due to the power of compound interest.
Don’t let your emotions get in the way.
Even the savviest investors fall prey to emotional decision-making. Market movements may make you uncomfortable or anxious but developing a plan and having the discipline to stay the course can help you avoid common mistakes such as buying and selling at the wrong time.
Having a plan—and professional advice—can help.
Working with a Financial Advisor can help keep you focused on your long-term goals, taking emotions out of the equation. When you work with a Financial Advisor, you get the best of both worlds—the freedom to make your own investment choices with the guidance of a professional who understands and cares about your goals. And remember, investments are just one aspect of your financial life. An experienced Financial Advisor can help add value not just to your portfolio, but also to other aspects of your overall wealth management strategy, from saving for college and planning for retirement to creating a meaningful legacy.

The riskiest financial move is doing nothing. Your wealth plan should keep up with the changing circumstances of your life, as well as with the cycles in the financial markets. A new career, a new grandchild, a new business, a significant shift in your portfolio — any of these events could necessitate a fresh look at your strategy. As Morgan Stanley Financial Advisors, we can work with you to develop a plan and then help you manage your investments and assets through life’s changes. Call today to arrange an appointment. The Death of Estate Planning?
C
ould it be true that the 2017 Tax killed Estate Planning? By removing the concern about taxes, do people feel there is no longer any need to plan? Since Estate Taxes only effect the wealthiest one to two per cent do the rest no longer need to plan? I believe if you think about it, you will agree with me and say no. Estate Planning has many facets, besides tax planning. The first is to determine how you would like for your Estate to pass at your death. If you leave this to the Intestacy Laws of your state you may be surprised. For example, if you want everything to pass to your spouse upon the first death, it may not. You may have results that were totally unintended. Also if you do not plan who will be your Personal Representative, the decision may be up to the Judge. It could be someone unintended. A greater unintended problem caused by the new act may be corruption of your intent in implementing your existing plan. Historically, it was accepted practice to structure your plan based upon the current Tax Laws. For example, when the Estate Tax exemption was $600,000, that amount was to go into a “Credit Shelter Trust “ to be protected from tax upon the second death. That often left some money outright for the surviving spouse. That was the intent. If the plan has not been updated, the entire Estate would go into that Trust. Everyone needs to drag their plans out of the desk, file cabinet or closet and see what it says and it’s impact. You may be surprised. Do not let the new Estate Tax Law be the death of your Estate Plan and distribute your assets in a way you never intended.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.
WARNING FLAGS Water Closed to Public Agua Cerrada al Publico
REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their
Absence of Flags Does Not Assure Safe Waters
territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life in the stars
We begin 2019 with dramatic shifts at the start of eclipse season. Out with the old, in with the new and a fresh breeze will be felt by many at the beginning of this new year! Any issues or restrictions felt towards the end of last year will fade away as you come up with new, innovative ways to deal with anything that seemed to hold you back. On February 19, with the full moon in Leo, many will embrace new forms of self-expression and creativity to enable forward progress in every aspect of life, from personal relationships to new business ventures! Mars, your ruler, is in your sign in January so this will enable you to MOVE! You’ll be looking at initiating projects and forward momentum will be yours to catapult you into a fresh new phase! On January 5, there is a solar eclipse in your 10th House which will give you the opportunity to reassess your priorities—how you interact with others, changes perhaps in your career, together with new ways of living and working are all highlighted. There will be a desire to widen your social network and you’ll be in demand! Venus enters Jupiter in your 9th House which will be fantastic for travel plans, international business opportunities and for romance—a chance to get really excited about life. We start the year with powerful changes!
