T

his issue is all about horse play! Polo season is in full swing from now until April 7th. Come out and stomp the divots with us every Sunday at 2pm at the Polo Grounds. Vero is home to quite the equestrian lifestyle! Did you know that many other disciplines of horseback riding are practiced locally too? We have Palema Trotting, a state of the art training facility for harness racing. The Dent Family Miniature horse ranch has been in Vero with their adorable miniatures for generations. Dream of riding on the beach on horseback? Well, scratch that off your bucket list, you can do that here too! Horses are also helping young riders build their self- esteem and confidence. Check out our special feature on Carefree Ranch, Florida Equestrians at the Scarlett Ranch, and Special Equestrians. These amazing organizations utilize horses for therapy, and healing hearts through a labor of love. Our daughter, Alyssa, is a little horse crazy. From birth, almost, she has had an obsession for these amazing animals. She started riding at a young age and continues that same passion today; she LIVES to ride. For years she nagged about getting her own horse until we finally caved in. “Henry”, a young three year old when he came into our lives, has always been a very calm horse (one of the reasons we fell in love with him). Almost five now, our giant sloth (16 hands), has taught us all many things. For Alyssa, he has provided an unconditional friendship that has raised her confidence and set an example of loyalty. He has taught her about responsibility and has given a new meaning to values such as patience and perseverance. As a parent, Henry has taught and shown us that through a young girl’s eyes he can do anything, be anything; and we have learned to believe in him. Each day their bond of human and horse grows stronger and whatever she asks of him, he tries willingly. As she develops into a beautiful young woman, this young horse will grow with her. Henry will continue to challenge her, he will make her a stronger person physically and emotionally; but most of all, he will continue to teach her to believe in herself… See you at the beach…or the barn,

-Day Eventing started in the early 1900’s to test a military officer’s ability to be effective in battle with their horse. The event is divided into 3 days (hence the name) normally taking place on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The first phase, Dressage, tested the precision, control, and elegance. Cross-country phase takes place on the second day and tested the stamina, athleticism, and strength over a long distance. Show Jumping is the final phase and proved the horse was fit enough and sound enough after a challenging day of cross-country. There have been modifications along the way, but the sport is still true to its original form. For the rider, it is exhilarating to maneuver your way through the event (especially the cross-country), and most horses experience a lot of enjoyment in the sport for its challenge and closeness to nature. 3-Day Eventing demands a strong bond and unconditional trust between horse and rider to be successful and safe. It has become very popular and has been a part of the Olympics since 1912. Lyndsay Cunningham started High Hopes Eventing Farm in 2007 with her two Thoroughbreds, Bella and Lucy. Since then, the farm has grown and there are now six horses residing there, including thoroughbreds and warmbloods. Lyndsay has a young team of talented, hardworking eventers that travel with her around the state competing and are looking forward to a successful show season! Check out her website at highhopeseventing.com.

Atlantic Crossing Stables specializes in mainly hunters, jumpers, and equitation. Outside trainers come in for dressage. Schooling shows are offered a couple times a year; with one ring running dressage, and the other a hunter/equitation arena from beginner, walk trot to advanced jumping. There is also a partial cross country course where they have built a ditch, tire jumps, and coops. The property is over 30 acres, including a stick and ball field, with 48 stalls and 3 barns. Atlantic Crossing will be hosting an Interscholastic Equestrian Show this fall. Their Interscholastic Equestrian Association team, Vero Beach Equestrian, is in its 3rd year. It has 8 team members from various schools throughout Vero Beach. For more information visit: www.rideiea.com. The team has had a very successful year competing against 10-20 other schools at one show. The students draw a number with an unfamiliar horse assigned to it and are judged on their handling skills of the horse and their form (equitation). Heather Callahan McCall and her husband, Brian, live at the barn and manage the facility. They have been here for 2 years. Heather has lived in Vero Beach for the past seven years, coming from Connecticut where she graduated from UCONN with an Associates in Equine Science and a Bachelors in Animal Science. Atlantic Crossing Stables is currently owned by Chrissy Clark and is presently for sale. For more information on Atlantic Crossing Stables, call Heather at (772) 925-6013 or visit their website www.verobeachequestrian.webs.com.

Sawgrass Farm & Equestrian Center provides boarding and training for a small number of lucky horses. The facility, sprawling over 46 acres, specializes in hunters and jumpers but they also offer short-term vacations for race horses on a space available basis. The exquisite show barn has eight stalls that are 12’ x 14’; each stall has two doors, great ventilation, fans, matted flooring, hay racks, grain containers and automatic water fillers. There are eight half acre paddocks and a large one acre paddock each having automatic watering stations. Riders have access to an elegant club room with eating area, including a dressing and shower area. Boarders can ride and train their horses in the two sand mixture jump arenas that have colorful new jumps. There is also a one-mile grass riding trail on the inside perimeter plus an additional six acre grass jumping field. For an hourly fee, non-boarders can use the grass jump field as well. Stacie Sprague is the local, well-qualified riding instructor and horse trainer who specialize in hunters, jumpers and equitation. Riders of all ages, from beginners through advanced, learn while having a great time. She can arrange local and long distance transportation to shows as well as expert guidance. Palema Trotters n

Nothing Standard About These Horses

H

arness racing is a sport where a special breed of horses, called Standardbreds, race around a track while pulling a driver in a two-wheeled cart called a “sulky.” The horses reach speeds of more than 30 mph. To really feel the power of the horses, go to a race and watch the race from the rail, which is as close as you can get to the action without actually driving in the race. It is a thrill to see the horses strive to do what they do best—go fast and win. Palema Trotting, Inc., is a multimillion dollar harness training facility located at 6425 53rd Street, in Vero Beach. Seventeen years after the sale of Benders’ U.S. factory, the Benders decided to tackle the American

16 March-April 2013

market again – this time it wasn’t roof tiles, it was with horses. The entire Bender family loved their time spent in Florida over the years and decided to purchase a joint residence. The family built a house and then formed a new company and opened a large training camp for trotting horses together with the top Swedish trainer, Ake Svanstedt. Why Florida of all places? There is a well-established tradition among American trainers to work in Florida during the winters. The horses that train at Palema are mostly colts, but other horses – especially three-year olds, are being brought to the training facility in preparation of the upcoming race season. This state of the art facility has 92 boxes (stalls), a guest house that has 12

Ove Bender, Jim Oscarsson and his two-year old colt trotter, Aperfectyankee, who won the 2012 Peter Haughton Memorial in 1:54:1 at the Meadowlands Racetrack. Jim owns, trains and drives his two-year old colt trotter.

dorms, and 3 tracks designed by Greg Coone; along with beautiful grassy paddocks, and plenty of space for horses to graze and relax in the Florida sunshine when they are not training. In 2010, the Bender family celebrated 50 years of horses. Karl-Erik Bender grew up on a farm in Sweden, so horses were always of interest to him. When Axevalla trotting track opened in 1956, his interest blossomed even more. In 1960, their company was founded – the family also bought its first trotting horse. After much research and consulting with the Axevella trainer, Tore Ernfridsson, their first mare of choice, was an American horse called Palema Fibber. She was a smaller mare than the other horses, and her auction price

www.portfolio-verobeach.com

was a modest sum of 4,900 Swedish kronor (or $800 in U.S. dollars). This was to prove a very shrewd investment. She won ten straight races surprising everyone but Karl-Erik and Tore! The operation grew quickly, was always successful and the horses always yielded a profit. Knabe, a prized horse, won the Swedish Championship and Aby Grand Prix and also raced in the United States. The mare, HaHaArden, was purchased in 1974 with the help of Olle Goop, a trainer at Palema. Little did they know that generations later, Gidde Palema, would be the most successful trotting stallion ever in Sweden, bringing in over 27 million kronor in winnings. The largest prize money in a single race was, however,

won by Alf Palema, along with Mickey McNichol, in the sulky who won $4.5 million Swedish kronor at the Hambletonian in New York in 1992. Today, Alf Palema, is the most successful breeding stallion in Sweden in terms of winnings. As recently as 2009, Torvald Palema, won the Solvalla International Elite Race, where he brought in more than 20 million kronor total during his race period. In 1993, the horses became a very successful business entity of the Benders Group, with breeding, a stallion stud and racing. By adding the horses to their business, it makes for great PR, as the many successes have drawn attention to the company and the horses are a natural point of interest when business contacts visit.

What started out as purely a love of horses and a hobby, today the Palema Stud Farm in Bossgarden, Sweden, is home to the breeding stallions Alf Palema, Gidde Palema, Adams Hall and Symphonic Hanover, as well as brood mares and colts. With the launch of Palema Trotting, Inc., a training facility in Vero, the Bender family can continue to enjoy their passion for horses full circle from breeding to training. We hope to encourage the Bender family to host an event at the gracious facility in the near future. For now, we can just enjoy the beauty of horse and trainer, trotting around an oval track in the misty fog of a cool morning with the sun just beginning to peek over the Atlantic…simply breathtaking!

n Dent Family Miniature Horse Ranch

T

he Dent family has dedicated over 65 years of breeding American miniature horses. The ranch has been in Vero Beach in the same location for the past 60 years. They sell miniature horses world-wide. During foaling season, the farm has over 100 sleepless nights watching over their broodmares, while still continuing to do all the necessary farm work during the day. They strive to hand deliver each and every miniature horse foal that is born. Broodmare and foal are kept in the barn with turnout for the first 30 days after being born. All the miniature horses are grain fed each and every day of the year. Foals are weaned at four months of age. After that, the foals are grain fed twice a day with non-rationed hay, plus turnout during the coolness of night on fertilized pasture. While at the farm, the foals are led around on a halter during turn out time. These adorable minis are handled on a daily basis for the first 30 days of their life. During this time, ears, chin, and leg hairs are clipped. Shots are given and they are body clipped once the foals settle down from being weaned. The Dent family is truly dedicated to raising their minis and have been for generations. They devote 100% of their time, effort and work to the miniature horses. They take pride in the number of hand delivered foals over the past 60 years, and stay with the dams during birth to make sure both mom and baby are healthy. These tiny equines travel all

around the world to their new homes. Some of the minis are used as therapy horses too. The Dent Ranch is a hard-working and extremely dedicated farm. Visitors are encouraged to call in advance to arrange an appointment. Visit the web at www.dentranch.com for more information and to see the last twenty years of breeding miniature horses. Be sure and check out all the minis that are for sale!

n Special Equestrians

gives horseback riding lessons to children and adults with physical, emotional and mental disabilities. Some of the riders have cerebral palsy, brain injury, autism, spina bifida, depression, and mental retardation. There are many benefits from riding horses. Since the horse’s gait stimulates the same muscles used when a person walks, riding horses strengthens those muscles for people in wheelchairs and people who have leg weakness. Riding horses also increases balance, posture, and coordination, and improves fine and gross motor skills. In addition to the physical benefits of riding, there are emotional benefits as well. A person’s self-esteem improves with the confidence of controlling a 1000 pound horse. Speech and social skills also improve while on the back of a horse. There is a strong bond between the horse and the human. Riding horses gives the students “wings” to accomplish their goals. Special Equestrians of the Treasure Coast in partnership with PATH, Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International) is a therapeutic riding facility that utilizes only PATH certified riding instructors. Special Equestrians started 21 years ago by a mother with a disabled child. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The barn is located at 7280 53rd St. in Vero Beach. For more information about donating or volunteering, please call (772) 562-7603.

n Florida Equestrian Foundation

was founded in 2012 after years of providing an environment that brought so much happiness and encouragement to clients, volunteers, horses, and of course, to Cindy Devine and her daughter, Marci, who is one of the trainers. Their mission is to enrich and improve the lives of those in our community who deal with emotional challenges through the use of Equine Assisted Mental Health Therapy. They offer a broad range of programs available for all age groups such as counseling involving client, therapist, an equine specialist, and horses, which include individual, couple and family sessions. Group retreat days are available, as well as enrichment programs from grooming and walking horses, to assisting in riding and complete care of horse and barn. These programs reach out to those in need of mental and social improvement, especially seniors and veterans. The horses are used for motivation, inspiration, learning to ride, or improving one’s riding ability through emotional control. Florida Equestrian Foundation is located at 9745 141st Avenue in Fellsmere. Please contact Cindy Devine at (772) 538-3748 for more information. Along with trick riding, she was also a Roman rider and served as a PRCA rodeo secretary for many years. Sparky trained the horses shown in these old photos and was one of the very few female trick riders who did ground work instead of strap work. In the industry, she was well known for her hard running black horses. She retired from trick riding and rodeo in 1976. Sparky is now referred to by her real name of Naomi Dent. Sparky and Chuck bought land here in Vero Beach in 1953, where she currently resides. It was used mostly as their winter home until retirement when it became their permanent home.

he popularity of plastic surgery is soaring – and more and more doctors are trying to meet the demand. Any licensed physician can call himself or herself a “cosmetic” or even a plastic surgeon, so the importance of finding a properly trained and certified provider is paramount. All cosmetic procedures have risks and potential complications. By choosing a board certified plastic surgeon, these risks are minimized. You should research your procedure by visiting the American Society of Plastic Surgeons web site www.plasticsurgery.org for a full description and the results you can expect. There are many ways to find a surgeon, including seeking recommendations from your primary care physician, family, and friends. You should ask for a consultation from at least two surgeons and more if you are not happy with the first two. Make sure your surgeon meets the highest standards of education, experience, and ethics, and ask them about their most recent continuing medical education. Also, verify that the doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If you are considering a surgical procedure, check that your surgeon has operating privileges in the hospital as well as their center. Not all patients are candidates for all procedures, so be confident the physician can offer you every option from injections to surgery. Dr. Rosato completed residency in general surgery and plastic surgery for a total of seven years. His plastic surgery training was completed in 1992 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery since 1994. He has been on staff at Indian River Medical Center since 1992 and he is section chief of Plastic Surgery. He has served as President of the Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Indian River County Medical Society and remains on the executive boards of both organizations. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The Rosato Plastic Surgery Center is licensed by the state of Florida and dedicated to safe plastic surgery. rom arthritis to lower back pain to muscle strain, acupuncture ranks as one of the most effective options to relieve pain as compared to medication or exercise therapy alone. Exciting new research is showing that in addition to helping to speed along injury recovery or nagging pain issues from long hours of training, acupuncture can actually enhance performance as well. A recent review in 2010 in the Journal of Strength and Condition Research compiled many well designed studies on the topic of acupuncture and enhanced athletic performance. Reviewed studies of published literature on the use of acupuncture therapy for resistance and endurance sports showed that acupuncture increased muscular strength and power in athletes. Acupuncture also improved the cardiovascular system’s ability to get adequate blood flow and oxygen to the tissues, which allowed for maximum performance. We have treated many types of sports injuries in our clinic, and our athletes notice they now can run faster and longer, swing harder, and breathe easier. Some conditions that respond well to acupuncture treatment include golfer’s and tennis elbow, plantar fascitis, pain in any joint or muscle, and rotator cuff problems. Acupuncture improves circulation, and removes any obstruction (stagnation) in the body which helps to prevent repetitive injuries. Enhanced energy, ability to effectively convert food to fuel, improved sleep, and stronger, more supple muscles are benefits of acupuncture that will enhance your athletic performance. Additionally, using acupuncture as a viable treatment option helps avoid the side effects of over the counter and prescription medications for pain. Acupuncture therapy can certainly give you an edge on the court, field, course or wherever your sports take you. Chelsey Croskeys Dodd, AP, DOM Indian River Acupuncture, (772) 564-8383

Want to Be the Best? Then Yoga is in Your Best Interest

O

ne of the most common misconceptions about yoga is that it’s not “real” exercise. Athletes and those who exercise regularly often doubt yoga has anything to offer. Yoga is so diverse, however, that there is a practice to compliment any fitness level. Fortunately knowledge and appreciation of the benefits of yoga is spreading, as a result more athletes are turning to yoga to enhance their performance. How can a regular yoga practice make you a stronger competitor? It all starts with the breath. Learning to control your breathing, breathing smoothly and evenly is one of the cornerstones of yoga. By keeping the breath regular and even, especially during times of stress, you stay calm and focused. You are better able to concentrate and therefore move with greater accuracy. Core strength, which is necessary in practically any sport, is greatly enhanced through yoga. Core strength improves posture, overall body strength and stability and helps to reduce injuries. Hand in hand with core strength is balance. Yoga works both sides of

the body, front and back evenly, this helps improve overall muscle tone and even out the body. Your body works more smoothly as an integrated unit. By strengthening the whole body evenly you lessen the prevalence of weak areas, further reducing the risk of injury. Increased flexibility is another positive effect of practicing yoga. Slow and steady stretching will lengthen out muscles and increase range of motion throughout your body. Flexibility allows your body to move better, faster and further, all vital to athletic competition. Participating in a competitive sport can be physically, mentally and emotionally draining. Yoga is an excellent way to combat stress. It will relax and calm your body and mind. Perhaps one of the most important benefits of yoga, for anyone, is the relaxation it can provide. Whether you hope to reduce performance anxiety, strengthen your core, increase your flexibility or avoid injury, yoga is an incredible tool for elevating your athletic performance to the next level.

The Dawn of Anti-Aging

C

ontrary to beliefs from the past, our genes do not define us. Choices

we make throughout any given day, in lifestyle, diet, exercise, and exposures do. Up to 80% of our genetic predisposition or propensity towards certain diseases of aging, can be impacted, prevented and even sometimes reversed through various measures. The new anti-aging model is one which encourages taking an active preventative role in your own wellbeing and health. The scientific data is rolling in and it reveals that indeed there is much we can do to intervene in the aging process and increase our quality of life as we do. Because of this, the global anti-aging marketplace is booming! People are seeking solutions and help for the following concerns: joint pain, bone health, brain support, sexual dysfunction, cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine dysfunction, as well as improved appearance. When it comes to appearance, both men and women are seeking out products and services that confer benefits for facial and hair rejuvenation. These include LED light therapy devices, treatments and collagen-building supplements. A trend for anti-aging products, consisting of both nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals, is one that favors science based, efficacious, natural and organic ingredients. Some deliver unprecedented results through the use of nanotechnology, liposomal, and time released delivery systems. These products can impact health and appearance in profound ways. Numerous medical studies reveal that consumption, whether through diet or supplementation, of vitamins, antioxidants, substances such as, resveratrol, turmeric and astragalus, improve health and appearance as well. These nutrients decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture and can have a protective effect from within, on UV light exposure, protecting our skin from photo damage, which can age us before our time. Both oral supplementation with these nutrients and applying them topically to the skin via serums and creams will bring fantastic results, minimizing fine lines, age spots and wrinkles. To kick your anti-aging plan up a notch, treat yourself and try the latest in aesthetic bio-technologies, like an LED phototherapy or cellularsignaling technology facial. Both are relaxing, non-invasive, and tolerated by all skin types. Terrific prior to a special event, these treatments will have you glowing, refreshed, and looking a few years younger within an hour! Who could resist?! If you are ready to turn back the clock, start feeling and looking even better, stop in to see us at The Anti-Aging Boutique. We can’t wait to share our secrets with you. Yes, the fountain of youth has been discovered in Florida and its right here in Vero Beach.

Hunger is Not A Game

Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen first opened its doors on April 15, 1988. Indian River County’s first soup kitchen, it was founded by J. Ralph Lundy, who served as its president since its inception until his passing in February 2009. The soup kitchen held its first lunch in the dining room of the Mt. Zion AME Church, where it remains today, serving hot nutritious meals from 12-1 p.m. to more than 300 people 5 days a week and delivering more than 150 meals to the homebound 3 days a week. Special holiday events for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving are held for the elderly and needy families that include a hot dinner, clothing, fruits, gifts and toys. April 2013 marks the 25th Anniversary of Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen. Located in Gifford, the soup kitchen

b

has been able to carry out its mission without financial assistance or grants from governmental agencies. Explains Lydia Forbes, President, “The strictly volunteer organization, relies solely on the support of local friends, churches organizations, schools, businesses and concerned individuals. We strive to uphold our founder’s mission: ‘To openly display the basic Christian principles by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and providing comfort to those who cannot be self-sufficient.’ Each meal begins with a prayer of thanks, profanity is forbidden and polite and proper manners are expected.” In celebration of this momentous occasion, we are commencing a community-wide fundraising initiative. With your help, we can have more meals and less hunger. For every donation of $20.00 or more you will receive a special limited edition pop-art poster created especially for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen by nationally acclaimed, award-winning, editorial cartoonist, James Casciari. Donations for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen will be accepted in person or via snail mail, at Frosting, 2915 Cardinal Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32963. Every dollar received provides a full nutritional hot lunch to someone in need right here in Vero Beach. Help us feed the hungry here. 100% of all funds collected will go directly to Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen. You can also “leave the change” for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen in the “spare change soup cans” at various area locations. lila blakeslee

A painter’s passion for horses

R

aised in Texas, Lila Blakeslee was born with an innate affinity and love for horses. Gifted with artistic talent, she has been able to combine two successful careers throughout her years doing exactly what she did as a child; ride and paint her beloved horses. After attending UNT on an art scholarship, she received her BFA in Drawing and Painting, Lila spent the next 15 years as a professional equestrian instructor at Willow Bend Polo and Hunt Club in Dallas. Simultaneously, she worked on her fine art as well as launching a successful business that featured her hand painted boutique items such as clothing and purses. In the early 90’s, she moved to Florida so she could be close to Wellington, which hosts the largest horseshow in the world: “The Winter Equestrian Festival”. There, she was able to promote her artwork to the top riders in the world. During this time, Lila was also very fortunate to work with Harry and Cary Van Wormer, who built the incredible riding facility, Sawgrass Farm. Through her work there, she was able to ride and compete on amazing horses at some of the finest horseshows. Lila is a Partner/Owner of Gallery 14. The decision to create a gallery with other artists has been wise. Lila’s fine art has morphed to 32 March-April 2013

them. Their amazing beauty, power, intelligence and trust continue to drive her to discover ways of expressing these superior qualities on canvas. “Several years ago, Toby Wayman (son of Tommy Wayman, former 10- Goal Player and inductee into the Polo Hall of Fame) was playing polo for the Shamrock Team in Vero. I introduced myself and told him that I knew his parents, Tommy & Rosemary, before he was born and that I had done a portrait of one of his dad’s favorite polo ponies, “Gamma”. Toby’s eyes got wide and he said that this portrait still hangs over the fireplace in their home in Wyoming. It was such an honor to hear that my painting had conveyed their horse so perfectly and that it still holds such a prominent place in their lives after all these years. That is one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive as an artist and for one that has always had a true passion for horses,” stated Lila. Lila Blakeslee and her husband, Paul Genke, live in Vero Beach year round where she still enjoys riding. She works out of her home studio at (772) 778-2363. Carmen Del Carpio

Inspired by the highlands By Juan Murillo Dencker

Forest

C

armen del Carpio was born in South America [La Paz, Bolivia] surrounded by a large canvas composed of inexhaustible polychromies, which varies according to the season of the year, sometimes illuminated with overcast skies of a rainy summer, other times with a deep blue-sky in winter atmosphere displaying a bright sun that relentlessly overcooks the skin of their inhabitants. This unusual geography has been a source of inspiration for writers, poets and painters trying to permanently suspend in time images of a city that is the “melting pot” of the Bolivian nationality and as well the center of political life since ancient times. The eventful and violent political life that Carmen del Carpio and her family experienced led them into exile to Santiago de Chile; however, the artist kept the Andean peaks in everyday view as a sketch of distant remembrances. The memories

34 March-April 2013

Mountain Range

of her earlier impressions from hometown were so strong that she returned to that particular site which lies between mountains within a “great hollow” at one end of the variegated disjointed Bolivian plateau. It is under this canopy that the artist fetches her ochreous pigments, prepares colors, and adjusts compositions to conceive piece by piece, her fine art. The reading or sightseeing of her works‑ whether they are paintings, collages or hybrid techniques- is the fundamental task for the wise and clever spectator even without the knowledge of the space that the artist inhabits. The shapes and colors create feelings of remote locations in space but nearby in time, however always as a habitable site. The exhibition is an open invitation to the imagination to travel between colors, aromas, and emotions as “builders of sense” to share collective memories of other lands, although afar, but still belonging to the same continent;

Carmen del Carpio is a South American artist. Finally, let’s say that the patina of her work carries the patina of time and memory, accepting that we forget more than we remember, perhaps this kind of plastic language from her artworks explains why we create from the Oblivion. Gallery 14 is hosting Carmen del Carpio on March 1st at the Gallery Stroll. Carmen is a guest artist from February 26 - March 30. Her work will be exhibited and offered for sale the entire month of March. Come out and meet the artist! A Stable Life

L

et’s talk about the fun it would be to do a design for the interior of a barn or a tack room. We are going to use all our vision to think outside the box. What can we do to make the interior of a polo pony stable a place we could sit and talk with a glass of fine wine? Let’s mix the obvious with the unexpected. I started with a couple of antique pine armoires to use for storing riding gear. Next, I needed a table to put our feet up on and enjoy the wine. The famous Snow’s trestle table…perfect! Chairs with leather seats have just come into Snow’s from our new exclusive California supplier. Now we’re talking. At the moment, we’ve done the obvious so let’s go wild and do the unexpected. We will start with museum looking mirrors, an original horse painting by Lila Blakeslee, and a small green antique teak cabinet to use as the bar. Can you feel it coming together? You are part of the design process and are sharing in the fun of creating. It’s time to spark it up with the accessories that will make this a tack room everyone will be talking about and will want to join us for that glass of wine. Polo is the sport of kings, so let’s use some crystal ice buckets and a pair of pony lamps. Now, it’s time to go off to the Polo Grounds and stomp some divots. Riverwind A tale of two comebacks Jim DiMarzo and Dennis Witherow

I

t’s 2005 in Vero Beach. We had a sense that we had dodged the twin bullets of Hurricanes Frances and Jean. Despite concerns to the contrary, the real estate market continued to boom feeding largely off the need to replace homes damaged in the storms. “It was bedlam...hard to keep up,” says Dennis Witherow, the president and owner of Regatta Construction. He remembers that there was always construction of 15-20 houses in Riverwind alone, as well as multiple buildings in Bridgepointe, a few custom homes at prices of upwards of $5 million, the rebuild of the Hawk’s Nest clubhouse, and building in five other developments throughout the state. Then, just as quickly, one day there was no more work. According to Jim DiMarzo, the broker-owner of DiMarzo Realty, the marketing and sales entity for Regatta, “The Riverwind story has paralleled Regatta’s.” In 2005, Jim and Barbara had just built in Riverwind and had sold their Central Beach

Great Play, Monday! by Barbaralee Casciari Monday

T

he early 70’s were fraught with raw emotion and epic events. The Beatles broke up, Roe vs. Wade gave women a choice, the T.V. show M.A.S.H premiered, VCR’s were introduced, Jane Fonda denounced America’s involvement in Vietnam, terrorists attacked at the Olympics in Beirut and Watergate shamed the presidency. The later part of the decade saw Star Wars become a hit and Elvis was dead. Sandwiched in the midst of these turbulent times, 1976 saw Americans festooning neighborhoods with red, white and blue bunting in celebration of our nation’s bi-centennial, a culmination of all the events that led up to our nation becoming an independent republic. Ironically, Americans were judging, ridiculing and spitting on our nation’s Vietnam veterans. It seemed however, amidst all the confusion, the nation was entering into a time of repair. People began to look to happier times. Freak, funky, dude and disco were the new norm. Baseball, never more popular, was as American as apple pie. April 25, 1976, was just another day at the ballpark according to my husband, Rick Monday. In his 5th year with the Chicago Cubs, the field was his office – and as are we - he was intimately in touch with all of its nuances. The crowds roar, the occasional heckler, the crack of a bat. Fast forward. Dodger Stadium. Fourth inning. While in centerfield, Rick could sense a commotion to his right. His stare directed at the pitcher and hitter, he could hear the tone of the crowd begin to change. “The buzz just seemed to get louder and louder” he often explains. With a batter at home plate, there wasn’t time to take his eyes off the game. Meanwhile, what turned out later to be a father and son, two guys jumped out of the stands from the leftfield foul pole area and ran towards shallow left centerfield. They were in his office! “I saw that one of them had something under his arm, but I wasn’t able to tell what it was until they finally stopped and I saw him pull out an American flag and lay it out on the field. About the same time, the other pulled a can from his pocket- I could see it’s glint in the sunlight. They began to douse the flag with lighter fluid. They were going to burn the American flag! That’s when I got angry and knew I had to do something about it. Six years in the United States Marine Corps. Reserves reinforced for me that what they were doing is wrong.” Rick took off running with no clear plan – yet mind racing. Do I bowl them over? How can I stop them? He goes on, “The wind blew the first match out. It was then that I realized that if they didn’t have the flag they wouldn’t be able to burn it.” An instant before they set it ablaze with the second match, Rick reached down mid-stride and snatched it away! “It happened so fast – I could feel and smell the lighter fluid– for a second I wasn’t sure if it was on fire or not. It took them an instant to realize the flag was no longer there. They threw the can of lighter fluid at me but I was gone – it fell harmlessly onto the outfield grass.”

At that moment, unbeknown to Rick, Vin Scully was making his famous radio call, “And wait a minute, there’s an animal loose - two of ‘em - all right - I’m not sure what he’s doing out there – and it looks like they are going to burn an American flag! But Rick Monday runs and takes it away from him – that guy was going to set fire to the American flag! Can you imagine that!” “Security escorted them off the field to the most thunderous chorus of boos I have ever heard,” says Rick, “Then suddenly, from one area of the stadium, and then another, and another, the crowd began singing ‘God bless America’. A couple minutes later they put up on the scoreboard the message, “Rick Monday…You Made A Great Play!” Rick goes on to explain, “I had asked for the flag immediately after the game, and I was presented with the flag a few weeks later after the court case, The guys were fined eighty dollars apiece and placed on two years’ probation for trying to desecrate our American Flag. Thirty seven years later, Barbaralee and I, cross this great country of ours with the very flag, raising money for military and other charities, visiting VA hospitals, burn units, the Fischer and Malone Houses, military bases and attending funerals and memorials of the fallen. That now tattered piece of cloth, to millions, remains a symbol of the rights and freedoms for each and every one of us as a result of so many who have proudly served our country, many who have given their lives.” Note: In honoring Rick Monday, a 2-time All-star and 19 year major league baseball veteran, for his heroic action on April 25, 1976, he has received a Presidential Commendation, a Senate Resolution No. 477, Baseball’s Hall of Fame voted it 1 of the 100 Classic Moments in the history of baseball and numerous other national awards.

Ahoy matey!

Boating is fun!

Florida is a winter wonderland for the white pelicans. This photo was taken in Sebastian where you can frequently find a flock. Don’t forget to visit Pelican Island as well!

Let the Vero Beach Power Squadron show you how. Learn about aids to navigation, navigation rules, boat handling, trailering, knots, and life saving equipment. The next boating safety course will be held on April 6th from 9am to 5pm at the Power Squadron Building, 301 Acacia Rd, at the northeast end of the Merrill Barber Bridge. Get your “Florida Safe Boating” ID card and if you were born after Jan. 1, 1988, get your operator’s license. Many insurance companies offer discounts if you have completed a boating safety course. Cost of the course is $35. To register, contact Larry Lott at (772) 532-6893 or lblott@gmx.com.

Be sure and email us your boat pictures! Don’t forget to include the story behind your boat’s name, it could be featured in an upcoming issue. Deadline is February 10th!

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

Horseback riding anyone? Yes, please! Scenic beach tours are available on Sundays. Rides are given at Frederick Douglass Memorial Park on South Hutchinson Island in Ft. Pierce. For more information, call (772) 468-0101 or check out www.beachtoursonhorseback.com.

REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities.

LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
