editor’s note

Zoom. Zoom. How does life speed by so fast? As I am writing this, I am just days away from being on this planet for half a century! OMG! At the same time, I am so excited to also celebrate my Opa’s 90th birthday! What a joyous occasion! We all get caught up on the freeway of life. Birthdays and life celebrations remind us that each day is a gift that we must cherish daily. In this issue, we showcase my favorite vintage cars and racing legends, some really cool “man caves,” and an artist that is amazingly talented—what special gifts they all have! On this bucket list of life, these people are so driven by their passions. I know you will be inspired too! Take a drive down memory lane with us, and visit some of our oldest buildings and landmarks located throughout our community, some date back to the late 1800’s! We recently added a new four-legged family member to the Tranchilla household. We really weren’t expecting to be a two-dog family as we were very content with our standard poodle, Max. However, little Otis found us and we couldn’t resist adopting him. Sure, some days are crazier than others now, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Be sure and check out our Dog’s Life page, and read all about Ramsey and his new life too! I think we could all learn a lot from our four-legged friends. Wag more. Bark less. Love unconditionally! Happy Spring! Let’s be adventurous darling! Sit back, buckle up and enjoy the ride…

M

y school years were spent in California and Michigan, where I fell under the spell of automobiles. This was most likely due in part to my grandfather, who was a mechanical and civil engineer, who loved big American cars. Our 356 Porsche (or I should say Neila’s 356) originally came from California. In the 1980’s it was first delivered to our friend, a car restoration specialist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When I first saw the car being delivered, I told him I wanted the car, but he was unsure about selling it to me. He kept the car and promised he would sell it to us…that took him 20 years! Once it was ours, we had him do a complete restoration. The restoration took more than 1400 hours, with every nut and bolt redone. After that, we reintroduced the car at the National Porsche Parade in Colorado where the car won the National class title. This was followed by Dana Point, Monterey, and Carmel, California car events. It ended with the National Porsche 356 Registry West Coast Holiday in Sedona, Arizona. Our 356 won at all of these events, or was exhibited if there were no car competitions. In 2009, we brought the car home to Florida where we continue to compete. We currently have a current streak of 10 consecutive class wins in coucours events. Neila was raised in Michigan and modeled at the annual automotive shows. She owned a Mustang and then a new Toyota Celica Sports Model when we met. Our first date was in a 1965 Porsche Cabriolet! Thirty years later, after owning many other types of cars, we still favor the Porsche models for their quality, excellent engineering and the fact that they are just fun to drive! We enjoy racing, rally driving and concours events, and plan to do more in the future. We both love cars, travelling and the wonderful friends we have made along the way. Recently, we competed in Boston; Traverse City, Michigan; the Smokey Mountains; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Monterey, California. We have a small collection of Porsches and other cars too. Several of the cars are show cars with national wins. I am very fortunate to have a wife who enjoys the cars as much as I do. These experiences together have enriched our relationship and enjoyment of each other. We feel very lucky to be the current custodians of these pieces of automotive art and look forward to enjoying the ride for many more years. BRIAN REDMAN 50 Years Later and He’s Still Racing Through Life

E

ven now, at age 76, Brian Redman still competes in various vintage events and runs the Targa Sixty-Six Club with his son, James. After more than 50 years of racing, the sport continues to pull him in. “It wasn’t really something I aspired to do,” Redman said of having a racing career. “But I loved cars and I was driving like a maniac on the road. So I thought I had better get off the road and get on the track.” In the early 1960s, Redman had a job making and delivering mop heads. He made the deliveries in the same cars that he took to area tracks to race on the weekends. “Back then, drivers drove whatever they could get their hands on,” Redman said. By the mid-1960s, Redman was competing in various races. He began attracting the attention of some of the top teams from several racing series. This included Formula One, where he finished 3rd, behind Graham Hill and Denny Hulme. The sport then took its first big bite out of Redman with a horrific wreck in the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix, but he was back on the track early in 1969 for the 24 Hours of Daytona (an event he eventually won three times). In 1972, Redman accepted an offer to ride full-time for Ferrari.

Ferrari won the World Manufacturer title that year, and Redman went on to win three consecutive Formula 5000 championships, where he beat out the likes of Mario Andretti and Al Unser. Unfortunately, that was followed once again by a terrible wreck, where he suffered a broken neck, sternum, ribs and shoulder. In addition, his heart stopped and he had to be revived at the side of the track. “It took me a year to recover from that,” Redman said. “I really didn’t know whether I could or even wanted to drive again.” Redman returned to racing and won his very first race back, the 12 Hours of Sebring, held right here in Florida. Despite all the physical hardships and emotional tragedies associated with his career as a driver, Redman stated that he had fun while it lasted! “Looking back on all that, it was a romantic era, but the cars were very dangerous,” Redman said. “There was a feeling amongst the drivers of ‘eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die.’ After every race, no matter where you were in the world, there was an enormous party because everybody was just so happy to still be alive. We had some really great parties.” Brian Redman and his wife, Marion, reside in The Moorings and have been long time residents of Vero Beach.

Racetracks, Road Rallies and Historic Sportscar Racing Events

J

ames Redman has been involved in historic racing in the United States for over 25 years. Redman has organized motorsports events such as the Porsche/Watkins Glen Double 50, and Rennsport Reunions 1, 2, and 3. He also organized the Jefferson 500 historic race in West Virginia, with his father, Brian. Redman and his father started Targa Sixty-Six over 23 years ago as an avenue for automotive enthusiasts to enjoy their cars with like-minded individuals. The track days are noncompetitive and open to all types of cars, from high performance road cars all the way up to modern GP and Formula One race cars. As the general manager for Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), Redman attends some of the most popular and historic racetracks in the USA including Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Mid Ohio, Palm Beach International Raceway and the Grand Prize Circuit in Savannah. The Mitty presented by Hagerty at Road Atlanta in April is the oldest and largest event of its kind and showcases historic race cars from all over the country. In November of this year, the Classic 24 Hours will be organized by HSR. This is the first historic 24 Hour race to be held in the USA. Locally, Redman and his wife have supported area charities such as The Sun Up Center by hosting road rallies. In fact, it was at a polo match when Redman was raffling off a ride in a Ferrari to benefit Special Equestrians of the Treasure Coast, that he met his wife, Dawn, the Voice of Vero Polo. Just two different kinds of horsepower coming together! Anyone with an interest in historic racing is welcome to contact James through his website, www.Gorace, www.HSRrace.com or directly via email JRedman@HSRrace.com.

Savannah Speed Classic

F

rom October 24th to 26th, Savannah, Georgia’s Hutchinson Island will come alive with the roar of engines with the Savannah Speed Classic. Savannah, unbeknownst to most, is the birthplace of Grand Prix racing. Celebrating that heritage, the Savannah Speed Classic is a unique road race experience that offers an intimate look at the inner workings of racing. Imagine back to 1908 - the unpaved city streets of Savannah filled with hundreds of thousands of spectators from across the United States; over 1,500 soldiers serving as human barricades to protect those watching from the racing cars zooming past; people traveling by train and steamship to be a part of the historic occasion; downtown hotels opening their ballrooms to serve as campgrounds for visitors; the greatest names from Louis Chevrolet to Henry Ford to the Vanderbilt’s all in attendance. All of this, just to be a part of the American Grand Prize. The races held from 1908-1911 included the Savannah Challenge, the Tiedeman Trophy, the American Grand Prize and Vanderbilt Cup. By 1911, over 500,000 people traveled to Savannah from all over the world to see the races, making for some of the largest motorsports events in U.S. history. In 2008, racing was finally brought back to the city of Savannah. Historic Sportscar Racing, Ltd., the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival, and Concours d’Elegance reopened the county road for racing at Hutchinson Island with the Savannah Speed Classic. The Savannah Speed Classic takes place on a beautiful course, featuring a wide flowing racing surface, a parklike infield, old growth trees and grassy banks for viewing the action. Considering this and the fact that it is located just five minutes by ferry from one of the most desirable destination cities in the South and you end up with one of the most popular events on the east coast for vintage racers. It is a great destination for drivers, crew, family, friends and spectators alike. The Grand Prize of America Road Course is located next to The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa’s The Club at Savannah Harbor at 2 Resort Drive, Savannah, GA 31421.

H

idden behind roadside trees and adjacent to Interstate 95, just minutes from Vero Beach, is a very unique piece of property with a great story to tell. The Payne Engineering Campus of 34 tree-dotted acres with natural ponds and wetlands is home to an 11,000 square foot building along with a three quarter mile race track with a skid pad, two straights and long sweeping corners modeled after a famous racetrack in Sebring, Florida. Henry Payne started his racing career in the Sports Car Club of America in 1959. He raced an AC Bristol and Lotus XV against the likes of Mark Donohue, Roger Penske and Chuck Stoddard. Henry had a collection of plastic Porsches—tube-frame, fiberglass bodied race cars. He had one of each—a 904, 906, 907, 908, 910 and 917. His son, Henry IV, who is a political cartoonist for the Detroit News, began vintage racing with him in the 906 in the early ‘90s. The building was the southern branch of Payne Engineering of Scott Depot, WV. In the winter months, the Payne family would come to Vero Beach to their John’s Island home. The Porsche cars moved south also, and were regularly exercised on the test track in preparation for the upcoming racing seasons. Henry was a pioneer in the application of solid state controls for heavy machinery and the inventor of the Micro-Trickle battery charger. The NASA Apollo Program relied heavily on Payne Engineering products, particularly for control of the massive cooling systems.

A Clean Car is a Happy Car

AT Classic Car Wash

A

s a young man, I always dreamed of owning a car wash. After having my own collection of sports cars and helping a friend get into the car wash business, it is no surprise that I ended up buying Classic Car Wash and Detail Center in 2006. To my family and I, Vero Beach was the perfect location to begin our new venture. I had been coming to Vero Beach for 25 years as I was in the wholesale produce business in New York. I always thought of this town as a great place to raise a family. We are going on our eighth year of business and we are growing just like Vero Beach. As the owner, I am always on the premises, 7 days a week. I feel you cannot properly run any business if you are not there. I treat every car as if it were my own. Quality is my top priority. At Classic Car Wash, we offer our customers many discounts and specials. Our best deal is the VIP card where you pay for 6 washes and get 3 free! A 33% savings! In addition, we discount all of our Detail Packages and we always have a 48-hour rain guarantee. Two other special services we offer are our “Paintless Dent Removal” and our “Ozone Treatment” for those nasty odors. Two times a year, love bugs are a big part of our business as we are considered the experts in removing those pesky little bugs. We know how acidic they are and how important it is to scrub them off before they chip away at your car’s paint. It’s no surprise that when folks arrive in Vero Beach, their first stop is usually our car wash. We make it a nice and pleasant experience. We have a great gift shop with the best cards and of course, a very friendly and helpful staff. Classic Car Wash, simply the best!

If These Walls Could Talk

O

n March 13, 2014, visitors who attend the fourth annual Heritage Celebration, will take an architectural tour of Indian River County, but everything they see will be under the roof of the Heritage Center in downtown Vero Beach. Large photos of some of the county’s most significant historic structures, including schools, a church, private homes and businesses, will be on display. The theme is “If These Walls Could Talk,” and it will showcase buildings from Fellsmere, Sebastian, Gifford, Vero Beach, Oslo, and the historic Riomar neighborhood in Vero Beach. Residents with knowledge about the buildings will be present to share stories and answer questions. Also planned are a Wall of Shame and a Hall of Fame with those buildings that are lost to us and those that continue to serve our community. Visitors will receive printed histories of the buildings as they stroll through the exhibit and will be able to create their own “book” about the buildings at the end of the tour. In addition, a coloring book for the children will be available. A limited number of last year’s books from the “timeline tour” will be available as well. The Heritage Celebration, a fundraising event for the Heritage Center, will take place from 5-8pm. Admission is $10 per person; the Heritage Center and Indian River Citrus Museum are located at 2140 14th Ave., in Pocahontas Park, historic downtown Vero Beach. Visit www.veroheritage.org or call (772) 770-2263 for more information. Written by Rebecca Rickey at the Heritage Center 30 March-April 2014

When I grow up I want to be a

race car driver

V

ero Beach is home to quite a few racing legends including Brian Redman, Terry Borcheller and a new and upcoming driver, Kyle Connery. Terry is a native Floridian, born in Hialeah but grew up in Crystal River. He and his family have lived in Vero Beach since 2006. Terry started racing go-karts with his dad in 1979. His mom and dad are still his biggest fans and have resided in Vero Beach since 2009. Terry attributes much of his success today to the time he and his dad spent racing karts in those early years. He’s been a full-time professional race car driver since 1997. Terry has been a fixture in the motorsport community for nearly 35 years. His winning ways started early with a World Karting Championship in 1983. The path from karts to professional sports cars was a long one. His last name wasn’t Andretti and his family couldn’t really help financially beyond karts. In 1987, Terry had an encounter with God and had an amazing life experience that sparked something he had never drawn from before— FAITH. He began to believe that he could do anything with God’s help, determination and hard work. This dedication and determination has led to seven professional sports car Championships in the last 16 years. His latest being the 2013 Grand Am ST Continental Tire SportsCar Championship. Terry has co-driven with some of the best drivers in the world. He has been to the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans five times finishing every time and was on the podium his first year. He has won some of the most respected races in the sport including the Rolex 24 at Daytona 3 times, the 12 Hours of Sebring and more than 60 other races. Racing, testing, and training allowed him to work with over 25 different automotive manufacturers. Currently, Terry manages a team of McLaren professional drivers that do all of the North American driving events for the super car company out of the U.K. Terry has also been involved in driver development for almost 25 years where he started as a driving instructor at the world renowned Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix, AZ. 32 March-April 2014

Currently, along with a busy 2014 race season, Terry has a private coaching business that has produced multiple racing champions in Indy Car, NASCAR and Sports Car racing. His involvement in motorsports has allowed him to meet and work with an array of driver’s and celebrities from around the world. Here’s Terry’s best advice: • Be realistic. (How much time and/or money do you have to work with?) • Start simple. Go to a driving school. • Learn the business of racing, not just how to drive fast/race. • Visit, volunteer, or work for a racing team. “Hands on” teaches a lot. • Be prepared body, mind and spirit. • PRAY! Terry trains locally in Vero Beach. Someone has said he’s been seen out west of town, training a local in his Ferrari! He doesn’t deny that and says he enjoys driving anything Ferrari, but still doesn’t have one in his garage. Time for a Tune Up

NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS Angela King, AP, DOM Jessica Donnelly, AP, DOM Chelsey Croskeys Dodd, AP, DOM, CCN Christine Nielson, M.D.

s we put the key in the ignition and crank the engine, we rely on our car to operate smoothly. Whether we drive a luxury automobile, a trusty standard or an older model, we must maintain the vehicle properly. If we don’t, it will break down, leaving us frustrated and inconvenienced. Thankfully, our cars come with a variety of gauges that alert us to give them attention. The gas light comes on when the tank is low and off we head to the nearest filling station. Consider for a moment that our bodies are similarly designed and need to be maintained in order to stay healthy and prevent premature decline. Symptoms are our bodies’ gauges that let us know something is off kilter. An ache here, a pain there, difficulty sleeping, bloating, fatigue, low libido…when symptoms appear, it’s time to visit an acupuncturist for a tune-up. An acupuncturist is like a good mechanic. An acupuncturist fixes the outward problem by finding the underlying cause, in addition to ensuring that all parts are in good working order. Similar to a mechanic checking your car’s computer for disruptions in the circuitry, an acupuncturist checks your Qi for disruptions in the flow of energy in your body. Qi flows in specific circuits and any blockage can produce unwanted symptoms. A mechanic also checks oil, water and other fluid levels because fluids are the raw materials that certain parts need to function. An acupuncturist may check blood or saliva levels of vitamins, nutrients and hormones to determine deficiencies. Nutritional supplements may be needed to give your cells, tissues and glands the raw materials they need for optimal function. Just like your trusted mechanic, an acupuncturist knows when the symptom is really a small problem that can be easily fixed or when it’s the sign of something bigger that needs attention. One thing is for certain, ignoring the signals from either your car or your body often results in a more costly fix down the road! Your health is the most important asset you have. Maintain it properly and you’ll prolong your vehicle of life.

he team of board certified physicians at New Vision Eye Center continues to dedicate themselves to offering the latest technology to our community. Dr. Minotty explains, “The laser for cataract surgery offers predictable outcomes while affording a comfortable experience to the patient; it is a true step forward in the realm of cataract surgery. The laser pre-softens the cataract, allowing surgeons to decrease the use of ultrasound energy to remove the cataract. Astigmatism correction

can be done simultaneously during cataract surgery using the LenSx laser system, reducing the need for glasses.” Dr. Stephen Tate says, “Laser enhanced cataract surgery with astigmatism correction is a gentle, precise and highly customizable procedure. We have had the system in place for over a year now and have been more than pleased with the results.” According to Dr. Stephen Tate, Drs. Minotty and Tate conducted extensive investigation into the lasers available and selected the LenSx for its performance and precision. Together with Dr. Roger J. Meyer, Dr. David J. O’Brien, and Dr. Paul L. Winslow, Drs. Minotty and Tate provide a wide range of comprehensive eye care in a state-of-the-art facility, just across from Indian River Medical Center. If you think that surgery can’t be a pleasant experience, think again! Needing cataract and lens implant surgery, I chose New Vision Eye Center after hearing very positive reports on the Minotty and Tate team. Dr. Minotty clearly outlined my surgical options, guiding me to what would be the best and most appropriate for my situation. s powerful, motivated, successful men and women, we know you don’t have time to fuss over the new diet trends or the latest health craze. Smart and savvy, all you need is a simple and direct way to keep your health and fitness goals on track. With that in mind, here is a Five Point Health Plan to keep you feeling refreshed! Hydrate - Water with lemon in the morning to kick-start your metabolism and then a constant supply of fresh, clean water throughout the day will keep your body lubricated and your mind sharp. Bored with plain tap? Try a few cucumber slices, citrus or berries to liven it up. Nourish - Get plenty of whole foods including grains, vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. Substitute chicken or fish for your steak once a week and consider hardboiled eggs with your breakfast cereal to give your mind a jump-start. Add in one greens smoothie a week and you might find you will need a little less coffee before you hit the office. (2c. greens, ½ avocado, 3c. almond milk, scoop nut butter, 1c ice) Move - Get your body up and moving. Do something every day. Bike, run, cycle, tennis, golf, cross-fit, yoga or mixed martial arts. Go dancing if you dare! Whatever it takes to keep you off the couch. Small steps add up! Play - Do something silly with adults like a themed party or a moonlight river paddle. Take an art class, cooking class or join a bowling league. Go away for the weekend and visit a comedy club in another town. While there, you can check out a new restaurant, see a museum or lay out on an unfamiliar beach to soak in the sun and new scenery. Rest - We all know how to work hard and play hard, but are you scheduling in enough down time? Studies show that those who take regular breaks throughout the day (like a walk to the water cooler every 45 min) and get a solid night of sleep score higher across a variety of measurable performance tests. You owe it to your long-term health to make sure that rest is an important part of the equation. This season, stay persistent, patient and positive!

Hair Rejuvenation at the Speed of Light

TM TM

T

raditionally, hair loss and thinning is regarded as merely “esthetic and often not taken seriously. Both men and women experiencing it know that it can be a major factor in self-confidence. Laser phototherapy has been shown to stimulate hair follicles, increase hair count and thickness, speed up hair growth and has recently been cleared by the FDA to address these issues. The Anti-Aging Boutique is making it more convenient than ever to achieve safe, non-invasive hair rejuvenation, with technology such as laser phototherapy, in the comfort of your own home. The boutique offers two of the latest innovations in leading edge technology in low-level light therapy (LLLT) devices. The first, the iGrow Hair Growth System, is a convenient-to-wear, hands-free helmet, that also has iPod and MP3 capability so the wearer can listen to music or work on their computer while effortlessly receiving treatment. Secondly, the HairMax Laser Comb, recently featured on Dr. Oz, rejuvenates the hair and scalp while the user glides the comb through their hair. Both LLLT devices are intended for use three times per week for approximately 15 minutes per session. Optimal results are expected in four to six months, although many notice improvement in as little as 12 weeks. The boutique also offers numerous hair growth and scalp products including specialty shampoo and conditioner, clinically proven topical Minoxidil for both men and women and hair growth supplements, such as Viviscal. The powerful combination of LLLT devices and products offered at The Anti-Aging Boutique provide a synergistic approach to holistic hair rejuvenation. The staff at The AntiAging Boutique welcomes you to stop in for a demonstration of the devices, or to see numerous before and after photos and you will see that they take hair rejuvenation seriously!

the dish Prepare the dredge: Season 2 cups of All-Purpose flour with ¼ teaspoon each of garlic powder, paprika, and kosher salt; and 1/8th teaspoon each of cayenne, cumin and coriander. Prepare the beer batter: In a blender, mix: 32 ounces Newcastle Brown Ale 9 ounces All-Purpose flour Then, pass through a strainer and place in a iSi Gourmet Whip canister (we love the one at William-Sonoma) with 4 charges. The canister creates an aerated batter which is surprisingly light and delicious. To fry: Heat a counter top fryer or dutch oven with 48 ounces of canola, rice bran or peanut oil. Dredge each of the halves in the reserved buttermilk, seasoned flour and then release the contents of the iSi canister into a bowl and coast chicken with the beer batter. Fry each half until golden brown and crispy. If you are unable to locate an iSi canister, you can simply dredge in seasoned flour and fry but the texture will not be as light and airy. To smoke chicken: Prepare pecan, apple or hickory wood chips according to your smoker’s manufacturer instructions. Maintaining 200 degrees, smoke the chicken for 35 minutes. (You can complete this process one day ahead of frying, but be sure to quickly cool the chicken halves to reduce time-temperature sanitation issues.) After smoking, the halves will be about 85% cooked and will finish to the perfect degree of doneness when fried.

Day 2: Add champagne vinegar and thicken with xantham or cornstarch. In blender, add ¼ pound of cold butter to hot sauce until it is emulsified. More or less butter can be added to adjust heat. Pair with Mashed Yukon Gold Potatoes and Sautéed Organic Swiss Chard.

Carefully make an incision between one side of the breast and breast bone. With your knife firmly pressed along the breast bone cut the chicken breast away from the bone. Once removed, and while keeping the skin between the breast and leg intact, remove the leg from the carcass. You should have one half of the chicken (breast and leg) connected by the skin. Then with a boning knife, make an incision along the thigh bone on both sides and remove the bone; repeat this process to remove the leg bone. Do the same process on the other half. You should now have two boneless halves.

M

y life as an artist of things mechanical started, to my knowledge, when a small drawing I had created for my grandmother was returned to me upon her passing. The drawing was of a jet plane and a racing car. What struck me was that the two subjects were in perspective with a date of 1971—I was six. In elementary school, I scored a few extra lunch room snacks from fellow students for drawings of the Mach 5 (the subject car from the Speed Racer cartoon). I guess I sold my first piece as a sophomore in high school to Deb Mazer, a Roger Dean looking pen and ink sort, like a Yes album cover. My life took a change when my WWII Navy and Pharmaceutical Executive father passed from a brain tumor. I was 13. He was an artistic scientist. He based his artwork on nuclear plasma. Prior to my father’s passing, we went shopping at Alger Enterprises in Paoli, PA for a Ferrari 275 GTS. We met a salesman named Phil Teighmeier. Phil would let me know when new or historic cars were going to be at Algar. He treated me well, not like a snotty nosed teenager. After I moved to South Florida, we stayed in contact. I had always drawn the latest version of Ferrari’s 308 models to personally test my drawing skills. In 1985, that would be the 288 GTO. I decided to have that printed to maybe sell some and give to friends and family. Over time, I created a robust portfolio but wasn’t sure how to market or sell what I created. I called Phil. With a little help from him and a couple of phone calls to the right people, I had the prime display and I could sell my artwork at the

upcoming Ferrari Club of America National Meet in Palm Beach. Wow! In 1986, at PGA National, my tie to Ferrari’s and automotive art started. For the next several years, I started doing the high-end show circuit. FCA Nationals, Pebble Beach, Concours Italiano, Cavallino Palm Beach and to make things even better, I now had sponsorship with Pirelli. A personal friend and owner of Redfish Publishing in West Palm Beach then started getting into the Giclee production market. Ultra high detail digital photography, multi-color, multi-texture and canvas printing were now all available to me. I decided to move to Vero Beach and open D&D Fine Art Inc. with my wife, a graphic and computer color specialist. After nine years of running a successful printing studio, we have gone back to what D&D was originally intended for—publishing of my artworks. Currently, I have been working on the “Blueprint Series.” That series has now grown to include legendary aircraft and historical engineering feats, “Blueprints of History” for design and technical marvels. These paintings are generally made for reproduction and are not only to showcase the beauty and power of these subjects, but to also educate through the research and technical specifications that go into each painting. hen my dad drove up in his brand new ’64 Impala on a Saturday afternoon in Levittown, Pennsylvania, the lawnmowers went silent as the neighborhood men took a break from their chores and came to check out Dad’s new ride. I climbed on the bumper to get a look at the engine. I really had no idea what I was looking at, but it sure looked cool to me. I was determined to know what made it go. For years we worked on our cars together, and a good part of our family camping trips were spent under the car. It was great time spent together and we were able to pass it off as “work” to Mom. When Dad passed away almost 20 years ago, I lost all interest in working on cars and focused on my construction business. Porsche Carreras have always caught my eye, so when the opportunity to buy one at auction arose, I took it. Cars had changed since Dad and I worked on them and a Carrera is a far cry from my old Datsun B210. When I opened the Porsche’s engine compartment, like the ’64 Impala, I didn’t know what I was looking at. I tried to resist tinkering on the engine, but eventually I had to know what made it go and was drawn once again back under the hood. This need for a place to work on my car and my desire for a place to escape converged. With some great ideas from friends and co-workers, along with materials reclaimed from remodel projects, what started out as an air-conditioned bay in a warehouse turned into the “man cave.” The personal satisfaction and serene feeling one gets from working with your hands is difficult to describe. Time flies, your head clears, one has a great sense of accomplishment and you can’t wait to work on it again! Maybe it’s time I stop calling it work.

Sheer Magic

fter a year of doing articles for Portfolio, I realized I have never done a bedroom article. So, here we go with three amazing bedrooms for the Liedholm home. The house had a great room-to-room flow with perfect lighting. We wanted to keep it light and bright with a feeling of floating space. That’s when we decided to use elegant sheers in every room. These were not your Aunt Martha’s sheers of yesteryear! No siree! These were dramatic Ado sheers from an exclusive book from Italy, Istanbul and Germany! Sheers give privacy yet allow our beautiful Vero Beach sunshine to come in. We created three distinct looks in each bedroom with lush fabrics that offered an invitation to snuggle-in at bedtime. Snow’s made a custom, orange lacquered nightstand that was a perfect accompaniment to the room. Don’t be afraid to fill the beds with pillows of all shapes, sizes and fabrics. As I have often said before, start the process with that one piece of fabric that “speaks to you” and don’t get caught up in that nasty word “match.” The only things that must match are your shoes. This project was a “sheer” delight because the client was so appreciative of the final product. It’s always so nice to work with clients that are so charming! I must give a “shout out” for the outstanding work done by Theresa Inc. on all the fabric construction and Miracle Inc. for the fabric headboards. Now, it’s time for that glass of fine wine. It’s five o’clock somewhere.

weddings

Photos by Martina’s Photography

The automobile has been a part of weddings for generations. Whether you opt to use one in your engagement photos or you decide to ride in style after you say I DO is just as important as picking out your wedding cake. Choosing the right automobile depends on the theme of your wedding. One of the most popular classic cars used at weddings is the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. The right car will add great elegance to your pictures. It is perfect for the couple who are having an intimate wedding with an old fashioned theme. Be unique! Create your own memorable exit! Ahoy matey! The quieter you become the more you can hear.

The glassy, calm stillness of the Indian River Lagoon is broken as kayaks slice across the water. Women chat about wine, dinner, families and the upcoming art shows until dolphins are spotted; then chitchat stops, cameras come out and the group drifts for awhile watching, listening and taking in the moment. Nature has connected with the paddlers and the stress of the world washes away. Leading the paddle group is Kristen Beck, co-founder of A Florida Outdoor Center located in Sebastian. Kristen is also a Marine Biologist and certified Florida Master Naturalist. She guides outings on local waterways pointing out wildlife, teaching participants about the ecosystems and the history of the area. She also explains how groups can enjoy nature ethically. “Paddling is a great experience. It teaches participants about the birds, mammals and fish they see. It helps spread education of our environment further. When participants upload their photos, they can tell their friends about the species they saw and maybe they remember the story about its habitat; that can help get others thinking about nature and conservation. I hope I am spreading a love for our waters by reaching a diverse audience. If I can get people on the water and whet their interest, then hopefully they will fall in love with nature and live in harmony with it. I want this adventure to make them want to protect it and inspire them to advocate for it. A Florida Outdoor Center offers kayak and stand-up paddleboard lessons, wildlife watching programs and excursions accommodating people 2 to 102 on our local waterways, including Blue Cyprus Lake, St. Sebastian River, Turkey Creek and the Indian River Lagoon. For reservations, call 772-202-0220 or email them at fun@AFLOC.org. For more info and photos visit www.afloc.org or facebook.com/floridaoutdoorcenter.

for our 17-year-old dog, Ari, whom we adopted in Santorini, Greece. Our beloved Ari has since passed away, but Ramsey was lucky enough to have met and befriended him. Ramsey was a huge help in filling our void. Our 2-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Louie, had been acting as Ari’s eyes and ears and overall nursemaid, for quite a while. They were best friends. Louie was visibly heartbroken after losing Ari but Ramsey quickly filled that emptiness. They love wrestling, frolicking outdoors and snuggling in a corner. We live on three lovely acres in Oldwick, NJ, surrounded by horse farms and conservation land with lots of room to run and play. We also have a house in Vermont and try to visit as often as possible, where Ramsey and Louie can roam 25 acres. They especially love taking long walks up to the small mountain behind our house, which has miles of trails. Ramsey always comes when he is called. From the moment he wakes up, Ramsey’s tail never stops wagging and he is always willing to give each of us a big kiss. Ramsey took one look at my daughter Kate at the shelter and immediately without hesitation licked and kissed her hand. That was it. Kate said, “Can we get him Mom,” and I replied, “Of course.” How could one not say yes to the charming and beautiful Ramsey? Ramsey has two dog cousins, Ajax, an Irish Wolfhound and Luna, a Labradoodle. He loves to run and wrestle for hours with them when he sees them in Vermont. Ramsey was so well socialized and cared for at the Vero Beach Humane Society. He is so ecstatic to have found his forever family. I can tell everyday he tries in his own way to say how much he loves us and how thankful he is. By Wendy Goodrich

buried treasure

Even in Paradise…You Can’t Avoid Tax Season It’s that time of year again, here are a few tips and ideas to make this particular “season” a bit less stressful.

T

he IRS is a bad choice as a banker – owe money this year? Remember, filing an extension only grants you more time to file your returns, not to PAY your tax. If you haven’t paid the tax you owe by April 15th, 2014, you will get hit with penalties and interest – which can add up fast. IRS rates of interest and penalties are higher than most credit cards. It’s always a good idea to pay your tax in full, even if you have to borrow the money elsewhere. Conversely, if you are reading this and thinking “no worries, I have a big refund coming every year,” maybe it’s time to review your withholdings at work or your estimated payments. While the IRS charges its borrowers a hefty sum, it pays 0% on funds you overpay during the year. Save Tax Money and Save For Your Future – If you have the available cash, it’s worth consulting a tax professional to see if individual

retirement account contributions for yourself and your spouse may lower the tax bill. You have until April 15th to designate contributions for the 2013 tax year. If you’re covered by a retirement plan at work, or are self-employed, there are even more options to save for your retirement and lower your current taxes. Business Owners Beware – If you have a partnership or “S” Corporation, the IRS has instituted per shareholder/partner penalties for not filing your company’s return or an extension, by the due date. These penalties add up fast at $195 per month per partner/shareholder. If you don’t have everything together, the extension will ensure

that you don’t get a surprise bill in the future. Recordkeeping is Key – Chances of getting audited can be relatively low but you can always have bad luck by being chosen at random. Take advantage of the great new technologies such as PDF software, scanners, and electronic accounting systems to de-clutter your home and office and ensure that you have all the necessary documentation to substantiate your return. At particular risk are the self-employed and small business owners whose returns usually have many more deductions to track. Know When To Ask For Help – the media is flooded with ads telling you how easy it is to do your own taxes and sometimes that’s true. If you have a couple of W-2s, a child and a mortgage, you are probably okay filing on your own. If you own rental property, are self-employed or have investment transactions, how you answer just one question in “do-it-yourself software programs” can potentially cost you thousands. Fees for professional tax preparation can often be much less than you think, so when in doubt, ask! Written by Elizabeth Daniel, CPA

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

horoscope

For certain, April will be a month to remember. Watch out for a particularly intense time, especially during the latter part of April. Softer days are ahead this summer! ARIES: The restless energy of the last few months continues. You feel antsy and impatient. You wonder when things will settle down. March 22nd is a good day for you to lay low. Of all the zodiac signs, you get the prize for being the most wound up. Direct that nervous energy into physical activity and all will be well. TAURUS: There is a beautiful and powerful aspect for Taurus people on April 25th. The world may seem topsy-turvy, but you are finding something to smile about. During these months, it is all about getting recognized and maybe even looking for a new job or work project. GEMINI: The Gemini mind is always churning. March and April are excellent times to study something you’ve always wanted to learn. It’s time to focus on your intellectual passions. Everything with you is about communication. Get back in touch with people from your past. CANCER: The planet Jupiter, a.k.a. Mr. Lucky, is still in Cancer. However, he opposes Pluto on April 20th, so keep a watchful eye on whatever is going on around that time. It will have some influence over your life in the coming months. LEO: Keep on shining your light! The world needs your cheerfulness right now. The spring equinox is on March 20th. This is a great time to clear out your house and your life of anything (or anyone) that weighs you down. VIRGO: During this time, you will find people who are making you crazy with all their problems and then people who are a huge help to you. This could be doctors or lawyers or just friends who give good advice. Listen to the wise ones and avoid the wacky ones. There are no grey areas here.

LIBRA: Normally, Libras are calm, but right now Mars, the planet of war, is in your sign and it’s retrograde. You are fired up! This means you will be more defensive than usual. Try to negotiate and compromise. SCORPIO: You still have Saturn in your sign until late December, so you are experiencing the finishing touches of a two-year cycle of restructuring. This doesn’t have to be bad. In late March and early April, there is a nice aspect for all Scorpios. SAGITTARIUS: Enjoy the quiet before the storm. This spring is all about preparation. It’s as if you know you are going on a trip and you need to be prepared for all kinds of weather patterns. On December 23rd, Saturn enters your sign. Trust me, you will feel the restructuring in the next two years. CAPRICORN: On April 1st, the moon will be making a nice aspect to Pluto in your sign. All the goats have felt a deep commitment to changing for the better and it’s all happening now. Enjoy the view from the top of the mountain. You’ve earned it with the climb you’ve been on. AQUARIUS: Venus, the planet of love is moving into your sign, so smile! It’s also making a nice aspect to Mars, so things should be quite romantic and lovely, especially around April 1st. PISCES: Jupiter is making a positive aspect to Pisces during this spring. Enjoy basking in the glow of good vibes from the planet of fortune. During this time, everything with Pisces is about “out with the old and in with the new.” Be open to letting go of what no longer serves you.

COMMUNITY... The concept of Community Acupuncture is a new one in Vero Beach. “What is Community Acupuncture?

You don’t need the luck of the Irish to stay healthy.

How can it help me? How is it different from private acupuncture treatments?” These are the most

common questions that are being received at Absolute Integrated Medicine since the Community Acupuncture Clinic opened in November 2013. In Asia acupuncture is commonly practiced in a community setting. By treating several people in one space fees are lowered, overhead is reduced and the patient receives all of the same healing benefits. When planning the new space for Absolute Integrated Medicine, Dr. Jill, as her patients fondly refer to her, decided to incorporate this concept into her new facility.

“I felt like it was important to be able to provide the community at large with the benefits of acupuncture regardless of their income or health insurance status.” By providing both private appointments

as well as a community acupuncture space, anyone, regardless of income or insurance coverage, can now enjoy the healing modality of acupuncture. Truly the only difference between a private acupuncture treatment and a community acupuncture treatment is privacy and cost to the patient. Patients still receive the highest

quality of care by a Board Certified and Licensed Doctor of Oriental Medicine as they relax and enjoy their treatment in a calm, comfortable and tranquil atmosphere. And there’s no rush either. A patient

spends the same amount of time receiving their treatment in the community room as they would in a private room. Some benefits of treatment in a more communal setting are ease of access, no appointment needed and you can even go with a friend or family member and be treated together. Both treatment settings include a thorough intake, a consultation with the Acupuncture Physician and nutritional counseling, whole food supplement and herbal recommendations to help the patient regain confidence in their body’s ability to heal. Acupuncture has been cited by the World Health Organization to treat over 40 conditions including Fatigue, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, Headaches and Migraines, Pain, IBS, Depression and more. Acupuncture can help you!

As the Community Acupuncture Clinic’s popularity grows, so will the availability. Currently

Tammy Anderson, AP DOM, is the attending physician on Tuesday & Thursday from 10am-4pm, and Saturday from 10am2pm. The fee is $25. Dr. Jill says “Ideally, we would like to see the community room open 6 days a week. As the community becomes aware of the clinic and benefits from it, the days and hours of availability will naturally expand.” The third

Saturday of each month is “Karma Acupuncture Day” where donations of any amount are accepted in lieu of the regular fee for a community acupuncture treatment. These donations are given to a local charity, truly paying it forward to the community.

With Absolute Integrated Medicine, you’ll have more than just luck on your side. 
