Who doesn’t love James Bond 007 cars?

Penny Tranchilla

Especially an Aston Martin, DBS Ultimate. Our cover car is locally owned and was made in 2012. It is #22 out of 100. A beautiful machine! Vero Beach is home to many dream machines. This year, we thought it might be fun to showcase some really fast and furious rides! We hope you enjoy seeing the cars as much as we enjoyed meeting the owners and photographing them. (I had serious car envy!) A special thanks to The Moorings Yacht & Country Club for allowing us to shoot these amazing cars on the 9th hole and to Bob Gibb at John’s Island Real Estate for letting us photograph the Aston Martin there. Both locations were the perfect backdrop for our photo shoots and we love showcasing our beautiful town! Since we have sunny skies and warm weather, it’s a perfect time to put the top down on the convertible and go for a ride. Be sure and check out our list of upcoming car events around the state. Even if you aren’t a car collector, we know you will have a fun outing! Plan a trip to visit the Elliott Museum in Stuart if you haven’t been there yet! It’s amazing! Happy Earth Day on April 22nd! We’re excited to showcase Garbage Gone Glam in this issue. Kristen Alyce is designing custom, eco-friendly fashion (out of garbage and discarded items) in such a glamorous way, while inspiring change to recycle. It’s the little things like this that, if we all did one small thing, it will have a huge impact on the world we live in. Most men we chatted with had a very special feeling about their cars. Each one referred to “her” when referencing their favorite car. From a “man’s point of view,” we dug deep to see how they really felt about their relationship with cars, custom upholstery, racing, and how important the “garage,” “shop” or “building” is in which they store these prized possessions. We loved meeting Jim Buckley, of Buckley Denim, who creates the perfect fit “man jeans.” We tried to convince Jim to consider a woman’s line! I hope you enjoy our car issue! Our staff photographer, Tracey, did an amazing job shooting some of our car shots and we were honored to showcase Dale Sorensen Jr.’s stunning photography as well. Dale shot our cover this issue. We’ve never done a black and white cover before—we hope you love it! Thank you so much, Dale!

DREAM MACHINES:

T

Fast, F un & Furious

There are pricey cars, and then there are really, pricey cars. They aren’t just fast and beautiful to look at either. Each one has something that makes it unique. These rare rides are usually built in very limited quantities. For those who can easily afford these sought after machines, they still have to put an effort into obtaining one. Most likely, you aren’t looking to buy one of these expensive dream machines. However, if you are trying to decide which one of these babes deserves a spot in your garage, chances are you probably already know what you want. If you’re like me and you just like to daydream, that’s fine, too. Luckily, we found a few of these highly sought after dream machines and we asked the men that drive them how they really feel about cars.

“I have always enjoyed automobiles but not as collectibles for pure enjoyment. My very first car was a BMW back in the early 1980s. I have been fortunate enough to enjoy many BMW’s, Mercedes, one Corvette, several Maserati’s and now a Ferrari throughout my life. Out of all my cars, the Ferrari drives more like a race car than any other automobile I have ever owned. The Ferrari is not an automobile that you drive every day like my previous cars. However, it is the most fun to drive! Ferraris are truly super cars that you do not see on the road very often.” ~ Chip Woody, Ferrari owner 16

“For as long as I can remember, I have always had a love for muscle cars, especially the Chevys. When I met my wife in 1976, she was driving her brother’s ‘65 Corvette. I fell in love with them both. Ever since that day, I always dreamed of owning a Corvette. For Christmas of 2002, my wife surprised me with a red 2001 Corvette and that was where it all began. Later, I purchased a new 2006 Corvette and in 2007, I made the jump to the Z06 Corvette. Boy, what a beautiful ride. I never thought I could give up my 2007 Z06 until the 2015 came out. One day, I happened to be at Dyer Chevrolet in Ft. Pierce and I guess I was at the right place at the right time. To my luck, they had just pulled off the trailer a shark grey, 2015 Z06 and “that was all she wrote.” I knew that this was meant to be, so I purchased it that very same day. Every day that I get into my new Z06 is like driving it for the very first time. What a dream come true.” ~ Tony Donadio 18

I

love cars and have a truly great appreciation for all makes and models. I have owned many cars, and have been through the Darwinian evolution of car fanatic ownership. My road has led me from my knuckle-dragging Trans AM rising to a 1989 Corvette and then further evolving to the truly exotic brands of Germany and Italy (in Ferraris and Lamborghinis). Ordering a new car, with all of the options and detail, has always been a Christmas day experience for me. Of all the cars I have owned, I have a few favorites: my first truly cool car was my 1989 Corvette Z51 with a 6-speed transmission. It was a love/hate relationship as that car spent as much time at the dealership as it did on the road. My first true dream car was my 1997 Porsche Turbo with a Techart performance package (this was the last year of the normally aspirated Porsches). Ownership of this mark taught me that the brand was pronounced Porsch-’a’ and not Porsche. Ordering a new Lamborghini Murcielago, exactly as I wanted, was an exciting venture into the exotic supercar market. Waiting nearly a year for the car to be built and shipped from Italy, I knew it would be worth the wait. Unfortunately, once I received this supercar, most of my drives were between my home and the dealership for repairs (when it wasn’t being towed). My 2001 Hummer H1 was a beast in every measure. It was all black and mean and cool, but considering it was nearly the width of a football field, it was always surprising to me that it barely had room for 4 passengers. My 2006 Aston Martin Vanquish S was a gorgeous car with an incomparable sound that was truly inspiring. It had a sound you could feel in your gut. However, no other car cost more on maintenance and spent more time sitting idle, due to technical challenges. I’m surprised James Bond ever made it to work! There were many ups and downs with all of these vehicles, but I wouldn’t trade any of the bruises that came with ownership, as I furthered my knowledge about cars with every experience. And the rush far outweighed the roadside stops... hazards flashing. Today, my favorite rides are my 2007 F430 Scuderia Ferrari and my 2010 Ferrari GTB Fiorano. These are fantastic cars! I believe Ferrari to be the most accomplished of all of the exotic car makers on the market. The design is purposeful, the craftsmanship is unparalleled, and the power and performance is intoxicating. Ferrari truly delivers the complete package. The mark’s history is rich and textural like the Godfather on wheels. They may very well have single handedly created the category of “Supercar” while inspiring others like Lamborghini and those that followed. By Anthony D’Elia

f you ask David Leon of Tops, Inc. what would he be doing other than upholstery he’d simply reply: “there is nothing else I was born to do,” which is easily put coming from being an experienced sewing expert for over 24 years. It was an after school job at 14 that led him to where he is today—owner of Tops, Inc., a custom upholstery shop located in Micco, Florida. Tops Inc. specializes in custom automobile upholstery from Bentleys to Bugattis to your daily driver. With special attention to detail, David also services motorcycles, marine upholstery, airplanes, hot rods, and classics. With over 20 years in the business, David has been able to excel at his craft. Coming from humble beginnings, originally in West Palm Beach, David opened his first shop in 1999. He recalls: “it was so small I couldn’t open both car doors at the same time! It was all I needed at the time though.” Currently, Mr. Leon runs a 7,000 square foot facility equipped with its own diner, retro living room and open showroom floor plan. “Here I can show off all of our (and Mrs. Leon’s) collections. People really dig what we have going on here,” emphasizes David. “It’s a place to bring your hot rod and take in the vibe. Definitely, a 50s/60s throwback for my clients.” With his award-winning interiors, David Leon has no plans to slow down. He prides himself on quality and the ability to handpick a lot of the materials, and even design the accent pieces himself that go into every job. With that type of devotion, Leon expresses the desire to do this for as long as he can. As he continues to serve Indian River County and beyond, he has even started a monthly open house in order to give the “do it yourselfers” a chance to gain tips and get help on how to work on their interiors at home. “I’m not here to compete, I want everybody to succeed. I love what I do. It’s a passion. Not work. I do it because I am an artist and this (your car) is my canvas.” To see more of David’s work visit his constantly updated Facebook page: www.facebook.com/topsincflorida. Join Tops, Inc. for his re-occurring Cars & Coffee Open House every 3rd Saturday from November through April from 9am-12pm. Cruise in for complimentary coffee and donuts.

Driving Fast Cars Kyle Connery’ s Life in the Fast Lane

M

y passion for going fast began long before I could even walk. Looking back, it feels as if I was born in a racecar. Some of my first memories were at a racetrack, like when my father took me to 103rd St. in Jacksonville to see Danica Patrick race go-karts. I had no idea that it would consume the better part of my life. Racing has not just been part of my life growing up; it’s what has defined me as a person today. The challenges I face in life pale in comparison to the challenges that motorsports throws at you. The actual race weekends only account for about 10% of the time vested. The other 90% is the preparation needed to compete at the highest levels each weekend. Racing requires such an intense level of commitment and dedication that it is difficult to participate in any other activities. It’s a strange love I will admit, but one that makes you feel truly alive. After each practice session there is a “debriefing” and we generally reveal a few “moments” through

www.portfolio-verobeach.com

the onboard cameras. Moments, where I almost lost control—yet managed to save it. Sometimes, I can’t help but laugh at them. It is all part of taking a racecar to its absolute limits and, sometimes, way beyond. It is not so funny when things go wrong, but it is what makes racecar drivers unique. Speed is what makes us feel alive. Where a normal individual in the same situation will find a way to avoid an accident, our job is to push harder

to maximize the cars’ limits. When that perfect lap comes together, it is so incredibly rewarding because the time and effort required to make the fast lap a reality is staggering. I could never see myself sitting behind a desk day in and day out…EVER! Why? Because I live, breathe, and truly love the world of motorsports. Being “out there” is something only a handful of people will ever get to experience. We are almost all destined to fail. Very few actually make a life from racing. Taking on such incredible odds against you make motorsports that much more exciting. As a driver, the odds keep you hungry. Hungry for the next opportunity to improve upon your skills, and show that you belong. To show to the world, you are the fastest. shop talk One Man’s Garage

M

y garage is a reflection of my passion for life. For me, one of the most interesting and telling parts of a home is the garage or as I often refer to it—the “shop.” I have had several shops in my life as we have moved around the country. First in Maryland, where I was born and raised and then in Park City, Utah, where we raised our kids and launched them into life. As we built our new home in Vero Beach, I drew upon all that I have learned from my own experiences and needs, as well as some of the smartest ideas from many of my friends. There are some basic rules about a shop. First, it can NEVER be too big or too tall! Second, you don’t want to clutter it with things that don’t matter—a water heater or spare parts have no business being in a shop. Those types of things belong in storage above or outside. Third, it needs its own bathroom! Great thought and planning needs to go into building a shop, such as replacing drywall with pegboard. Not only is it smarter, but you always have a place to hang things exactly where you need them and it just looks better! Of course, the shop needs a TV. I love sports of every variety. There isn’t any activity I don’t like to play or do and my shop reflects that. There are cars and motorcycles and things with various engines attached, but there are also reminders of the past. Mementos of earlier years and time honored treasures.

24

March-April 2015

Everything has a story and a history. There is a reminder of each member of my family and all of my closest friends are represented in one way or another in my shop. Most importantly, my beautiful and amazing wife “let” me build it just the way I wanted it. My shop is who I am and it fits me. By Anonymous Contributor www.portfolio-verobeach.com

The Elliott Museum “Classics At The Beach” and Museum Tour

T

he Elliott Museum, located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, Florida, is a museum of art, history and technology. The Elliott houses one of the country’s best and largest museum collections of vintage cars. Many of the vehicles are displayed in a unique racking system—the only one of its kind in the United States. The collection features over fifty (50) Ford Model A and AA vehicles from the Elliott R. Donnelley collection. One is a rare Model A School Bus restored and available for people to climb into and experience. Other vehicles range from a 1903 Cadillac to a 1929 Rolls Royce manufactured in Springfield, Massachusetts. Each year, the museum sponsors an invitational car show, “Classics at the Beach,” on the museum’s grounds. The nineteenth (19th) annual car show will be held on Sunday, April 12, from 10am to 3pm. Restoring a Classic The Trials and Tribulations Some cars are like family. They are passed down from generation to generation. This MG was originally purchased by my father’s brother, Gerald Koontz. Here is our story…

Notes from my Uncle Jerry It was bought in 1970 from a man in Maryland who inherited it from his father. It was painted red, was missing all four side curtains and needed work. At the time, I was stationed at Andrews Air Base. I hired a young mechanic to work with me to rebuild the engine, which we did at the Base Auto Hobby Shop. In 1972, I received orders to transfer to Naples, Italy. The MG was shipped to Naples where it was completely dismantled, the body was restored in first class condition and repainted yellow. The transmission was rebuilt and the convertible top was replaced while in Naples, too. All the work was done by an Italian Automotive Shop owner. In 1975, I once again received orders to transfer to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. From Italy, the MG was shipped to New Jersey and used as my daily mode of transportation until 1978 when I was transferred to Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. I had a tow bar custom made so that I could transport the MG to California with me. Before leaving for California, we visited my parents in Maryland. This is where you and your sisters first saw the MG and you asked your Dad to buy it and he did. We towed the MG to State College, Pennsylvania, before leaving for California. You and your Dad know the rest of the story…

Notes from my Father When I purchased the MG from my brother, Jerry, it was in excellent condition. We enjoyed it immensely while living in State College, PA. Some of my fondest memories are when we drove the back country roads on a brisk, sky blue, fall afternoon with the trees ablaze with color. With the top down, engine purring like a kitten and the wonderful fall aroma in the air coupled with the faint smell of burning oil wafting up through the wooden floorboards, it just doesn’t get any better than that in a roadster! Another great time was driving down College Avenue on a football weekend with all the kids sitting up on the back seat! In 1982, the MG came with us to our move to Vero Beach. We moved to Seattle, WA, and took the MG with us in 1988 and returned to Vero. In 1995, I gave the MG to my son, AJ, in hopes of seeing this classic automobile back on the road. AJ took care of the many repairs and finally undertook the painstakingly, time-consuming and expensive restoration process of restoring the MG to original factory condition for the future enjoyment of sharing it with his two sons: Alfred J. Koontz, IV and John Griffin Koontz.

Notes from AJ In 1995, after meeting with several local British car mechanics in Vero Beach, Joe Bouley was selected as the man to get this classic back on the road. The idea was to get it running as a daily driver. We were successful in getting the MG to run...but it was not as safe and stable it could be. It needed many structural and cosmetic repairs. Our wood framed classic had termites and the wood floorboards where soft too. After making several inquiries with hopes of finding the right restorer to help with the exterior body now that she was running, a referral led me to a small garage off of Old Dixie. The body repair shop employed a painter and body person with restoration knowledge for vintage MG’s. He seemed confident and I contracted him to do the repairs needed to put “her” back as a good daily driver. Regrettably, after 3 months into the project, the worker left town with my MG! I could not believe it. I thought she was gone forever. After getting the police involved and hiring a private detective, the MG was found outside an auto shop in Fort Lauderdale with a cover on it. This was in 1999 and Hurricane Floyd had taken its toll. My old MG was found as a result of insurance underwriters inspecting this property. The chassis numbers and engine number matched the MG and the old gal was back to Vero Beach on a flat bed. Now, fully committed to finding the best British restoration possible, the MG was sent off for a complete restoration. After many discussions among the Koontz boys regarding the restoration and paint color of this classic automobile, they decided to contact the British Motor Industry Trust to obtain the original factory record on the car. We needed to find out when and where our 1955 TF 1500 was built and what the original color was. Our certificate arrived on December 12, 2002. Her original colors were Battle Ship Grey with red trim and a biscuit top. This was the final decision. After many more years and way too many decisions later, our classic MG was fully restored. She is a true GEM! If this classic car was a boat, her name would be “Perseverance.” By AJ Koontz and family

Maintain a Well-Oiled Machine

K

ey in the ignition, windows rolled down, radio turned up…we rely on our car to take us to different destinations on our journeys. Whether we drive a luxury automobile, a trusty standard, or an older model, we must maintain the vehicle properly, or it will break down leaving us frustrated and inconvenienced. Thankfully, our cars come with a variety of gauges that alert us to give them attention. Consider for a moment that our bodies are similarly designed and need to be maintained in order to stay healthy. Symptoms are our bodies’ gauges that let us know something is out of balance. An ailing joint resembles a faulty tire. When a vehicle has bad tires, it affects the overall efficiency of the vehicle. Think of aching joints like a squeaky wheel, they both interfere with our ability to move freely. Making good dietary choices is crucial because food is what fuels the body. A clean wholesome meal nourishes the major systems and keeps our wheels in motion. Fast food for example, doesn’t give us speed but rather slows us down by causing the body to be sluggish. Is the food you eat low-grade fuel or are you choosing premium? A gnawing pain, restless sleep, fatigue, or

constipation could be your body’s check engine light signaling for maintenance. It may be time to visit your acupuncturist for a tune-up. An acupuncturist is like a good mechanic— she will fix the problem by finding the underlying cause and maintain your body like a well-oiled machine. Similar to a mechanic checking your car’s computer for problems, an acupuncturist checks your Qi for disruptions in the flow of energy in your body. Qi flows in specific pathways and any blockage or stagnation can produce unwanted symptoms. A mechanic also checks oil, water, and other fluid levels because fluids are the raw materials cars need to function. An acupuncturist may check blood or saliva levels of vitamins, nutrients and hormones to determine

deficiencies. Nutritional supplements may be needed to give your cells, tissues, and glands the raw materials they need for optimal function. And just like your trusted mechanic, an acupuncturist knows when the symptom is a small problem that can be easily corrected, and when it’s the sign of something bigger that needs attention. One thing is for certain—ignoring the signals from either your car or your body often results in a more costly fix down the road! Your health is the most important asset you have, so maintain it properly and you’ll prolong the life of your vehicle! Life is a highway. Jessica Donnelly A.P., D.O.M. Paddle Out! Surf Vero! Learn to Surf or SUP with a Vero Native

I

am a 5th generation Vero Beach native. My great-grandparents moved here in the 1920s. Our families have always been very involved in the community. Surfing our beaches and spending time on the river were huge parts of my childhood. I have been best friends with Jake and Jarrod Owen since childhood. You would always find us at the beach or out on the river all summer long. We enjoyed fishing, skiing, wake boarding, or camping on the spoil islands. I first learned to surf at the age of five and instantly fell in love with the ocean. There is something about riding a wave that cannot be put into words. This feeling is indescribable. It is what connected me to the ocean. As a child, for me, being out on the ocean meant independence, solitude and excitement all at the same time. As a young teenager, I started competing in amateur surfing competitions and was sponsored by some of the top surfing companies. From there I went on to pursue professional surfing where I competed professionally and traveled to some amazing places. Now that I’m grown up, I work for Indian River County Fire Rescue as a FireFighter/Paramedic. I love being able to give back to the community that has been so good to me. The sea still calls to me, which is why I started Surf Vero. I want to share my knowledge about surfing, our ocean, and my beloved lagoon. Teaching someone to surf for the first time makes me as happy as it makes them. All it takes is to see that expression on their face after they catch their first wave and it brings me back to that first day I rode my first wave. I have taught beginners from ages 4-65 and have helped people improve on their existing surf skills. It doesn’t matter what age the “student”

34

March-April 2015

is, the reaction after their first wave is always the same. This is what keeps me out in the water. I also enjoy Stand Up Paddle Boarding. It’s a very versatile sport that you can do on the ocean or river. Ride big waves, fish, or just go for a leisurely paddle: it’s a great way to exercise or find solitude. “SUP” is great for all ages. Out in the ocean, students have the option to cruise or paddle into some waves. Seeing people enjoy our natural resources, bringing awareness about the preservation and protection of our waters, and seeing their smiles after a SUP or surf sesh, is the best. There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be. I hope I can inspire people to enjoy what we have right in our backyard. Let’s go paddle! For surf or SUP lessons, call me! Rio Coco Café Coffee for a Cause

I

f you haven’t yet been to Rio Coco Café, we suggest putting it on your to-do list this week. Rio Coco Café’s coffee makes it a standout restaurant in Vero Beach. Using only high altitude specialty or premium grade coffee, Rio Coco Café roasts in small batches, very slowly. Michael Bagby, Chief of Rio Coco Beans Coffee, said that this technique brings out the best flavonoids, which is what we taste in coffee. In addition to amazing coffee, the café has a fresh, healthy breakfast and lunch menu. But there’s much more to this kitschy café than just good coffee and food. The story of Rio Coco Café in Vero Beach begins with Michael Bagby, and his wife, Laura. Both have dedicated their lives to Christ and to helping others. In 2004, Michael and Laura founded Rio Coco Beans Coffee to fundraise for “Project Ezra,” mission work spearheaded by Michael that builds, staffs and maintains schools in eight communities along the Coco River in Nicaragua and Honduras. In 2008, while visiting the island of Utila, a scuba diving mecca right off of the north coast of Honduras, Michael wondered where he could get a good cup of coffee on the island. He was inspired to bring Rio Coco Beans Coffee to Utila, and in summer of 2011, the first Rio Coco Café was opened on the island. In December of 2011, Michael and Laura found a space near the Vero Beach airport where they decided to open a second Rio Coco Café. Rio Coco Café in Vero Beach is part of Michael and Laura’s non-profit corporation Seek the Lamb and all profits from the café are used for Project Ezra, which provides salaries for teachers and purchases all school supplies for the 1,300 plus students and eight schools. The café is even staffed with volunteers who serve just to serve.

A Vineyard Under the Tuscan Sun The Estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi

H

ave you ever dreamed of living in Tuscany, Italy? Lee Venturini Del Greco and her Italian husband, Guido, have found a way to make their dream come true: they split their time between Italy and Florida. Lee has been a resident of Vero Beach since 2003, when she bought her property in the Moorings. Together, with Guido, they own and manage the Estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi, which dates back to the 12th Century. There they produce some of the best Sangiovese and blended red wine under the DOC Orcia label, which is where their story begins. Q: Where is The Estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi located? A: It lies between the towns of Buonconvento, Montalcino and Murlo in the region of Tuscany, precisely in the Orcia Valley area of the province of Siena. Q: How many acres is the estate? A: It encompasses over 700 acres, of which 17 acres are dedicated to the wine production. Q: What is the estate’s main priority? A: Maintaining the flavor and tradition of the estate, while making modern improvements as 38

March-April 2015

necessary. The estate’s specialized vineyards are made up of various grapes and indigenous clones such as Sangiovese, Foglia Tonda, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, which are used to make the DOC Orcia wines. There are also vines of Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon which represent the international grape varieties. The entire production is harvested and produced on-site in the enchanting, antique wine cellar that historically housed the soldiers of the Siennese army who used the tower of the castle as their vantage point.

Q: Are the wines mass produced or very limited? A: The estate production is very limited and each yearly harvest depends on the climatic circumstances. 2006, 2008 and 2010 were excellent years for us and yielded a maximum of 20,000 bottles of 3 red wines, 1 white wine, and vinsanto. The other years, either a very limited cru was chosen to produce or the grapes were harvested and sold to the neighboring consortium of Montalcino. Q: Where can a person buy your wine locally? A: A fine selection of these wines are available at the following local establishments: Cork & Tapas, The Moorings Club, Chelsea’s on Cardinal, Joey’s Seafood, Johnny D’s and Osceola Bistro. Please make sure you visit these great locations to try a glass or even a bottle to enhance your meal! La Tabla A Café with a Conscience, Opens in Vero

R

oyal Palm Pointe is on the verge of an awakening and it’s due in part to the great lattes you can find at La Tabla Local Food + Juicery. La Tabla, which means ‘table’ or ‘board’ (as in surf board) in Spanish, is a hip little breakfast and lunch spot for those who err on the healthy side and appreciate fresh, local food. Opened just three months ago by Santiago and Naomi Ares, the café is a welcomed addition to the Royal Palm Pointe community and Vero Beach. The couple has shared a love of good food and healthy living since they met in Los Angeles 20 years ago. Santiago is from Argentina and Naomi is a California native, so each brings to the table, quite literally, a unique culinary perspective, which combines perfectly culminating into La Tabla. The menu is a result of the couple’s international background incorporating Californian, Argentine, and Italian elements into the dishes, with some vegetarian options and no shortcuts. Morning fare includes power toasts with a free-range egg, acai bowls, or house-roasted organic granola. For lunch, customers can choose from grain bowl or kale/spinach salads, five types of panini, and vegetable soups from scratch. Sweets include house-made organic banana ice-cream or paleo pumpkin pie. The food is served on metal trays and the drinks come in Mason jars! Plastic is simply not an option. La Tabla works with as many local farms as possible including buying from White Rabbit, Florida Veggies and Osceola Organics, and also sourcing their citrus and honey from local providers. “We prefer sourcing locally as much as possible because it supports the local economy and for environmental and nutritional reasons,” says Santiago. La Tabla features a minimalist industrial décor with a long bar and one long table just under an iconic surfboard hanging from the ceiling, shaped and signed by none other than Robert August (Endless Summer). The surfboard represents the café’s ethos: life is all about balance and taking your time to enjoy it, including good food, good conversation, and opting out of shortcuts. Off the Beaten Path Warehouse Art Gatherings

M

y name is Linwood Fuller and I live here in Vero. I go by Skip, but have been thinking of going by Linwood…Oh…and I’ve got an idea. I have some warehouse space. Some to share. Part for me and, hopefully, part for you. It should be good. First, we have no meetings. We just hangout on Saturday mornings 9:00am (surf permitting). As always, we get excited about an idea. Set a date for completion, show up, and then we do it! No committees. Weekday hours to be announced based on project needs. Our idea is to have somewhere we can invent stuff and grow our town. If you’re an artist, inventor, dreamer, or social provocateur—you’re invited! We are the positive, the approachable, the excited, and hopefully the humble. The space is available to create and expand in group fashion. We have tools and maybe you have some too? Everything else remains to be figured out. As our group grows, so will our capabilities. Bring your passion and we’ll work it in! We also believe in charity, so if you have a cause, swing on by and maybe we can help. The more local the cause, the better. Where is this place? Location is provided on an “ask around basis” and we’ll be here as long as we can. So talk to people and find us. Our current interest is art in any form. This includes, but is not limited to, painting, pottery, welding, furniture design, CNC router work, 3D printing, social media, music making and recording, video production, set design, fashion, and perpetual motion. Linwood or Skip, I’ll let you decide. Join Off Island Studio at their next gallery events on March 20th where they feature photographic artistic, Rochelle Haisley. On April 17th, they will host their first gallery fundraiser, Let’s Get Rooted, featuring wood-inspired artists like Jack Shelton, Ginny Piech Street, Anita Prentice, along with gallery owners, Skip and Saskia Fuller. Gallery nights begin at 5:30pm and are a one-night only show. 42

Buckley Denim Classic Men’s Jeans Made in the USA

A

fter twenty years in the vintage denim business, Jim Buckley founded Buckley Denim to create the perfect pair of jeans for men. He recognized the beauty in the material and craftsmanship of the jeans made before he was born and built a company to produce a modern jean with the same attention to detail. Hand-crafted in Vero Beach and Blue Ridge, Georgia, Buckley Denim jeans are made using only the finest American woven Selvedge denim. They are produced in limited quantities and numbered and signed by Jim Buckley at his downtown Vero Beach workshop. Buckley Denim specializes in premium men’s lightweight jeans in a classic or slim fit. The dark indigo denim is woven on the same vintage shuttle looms that made denim for Levi’s over 100 years ago. There is one mill left in the country that uses this method and they produce denim that is widely considered the best in the world. Buckley is one of the few jean makers in the world with access to this mill. Men’s jeans are available in even and odd sizes from 28 to 40 for that perfect fit. Although the jeans are not prewashed or treated in any way, the 44

March-April 2015

100% cotton denim will soften up quickly and become your favorite pair of jeans. According to Jim, the break in process should involve wearing them as long as possible before your first wash. Pricing runs $195 a pair. Buckley Denim jeans are showcased right here at Jim’s Vero Beach workshop. The shop has a cozy utilitarian vibe, much like the man that designed them. It’s relaxed, comfy. You feel right at home. He offers his clients a variety of “manly” beverages, there’s a cozy couch with a few chairs, some vintage Singer sewing machines, and some prized vintage leather jackets that add to the décor. Consider giving your man a gift certificate. He can stop by on his own, have a drink, relax, and get custom fitted in the perfect jeans. (I’m kind of jealous Jim doesn’t make jeans for women!) The owner’s vision, the creativity of the architect and engineer, and the planning and challenges to pull them all together still give me a thrill after 25 years of building homes. Our latest home was no exception. The first meeting with our new clients had a slightly different feel than most. There was a strong focus by everyone to resolve outstanding issues and move forward immediately. No decision was postponed. Selections were finalized and alternates were decided upon. When the owners stated that they wanted to be in their new home for Thanksgiving, we all thought to ourselves “This Thanksgiving? He can’t mean this Thanksgiving.” It was mid-December and we had not yet applied for a building permit. This is a big house with a large amount of site work, an elevated pool, and detached garages. He couldn’t have meant this Thanksgiving. After a brief silence, we all realized that he did. I looked at the site superintendent, Mark Prickett, and managers, Kenny Nolen and Andy Swetz. Although no one spoke, I knew they were up for it and I agreed. With the complete cooperation and some great customer service from Indian River County and Windsor, we were able to quickly work through some utility and planning issues, obtain a permit and break ground in just a few weeks. The hard work and dedication to the schedule by the owners, architects, subcontractors, and our entire team became contagious and no one wanted to be responsible for the job falling behind. Two weeks before Thanksgiving, we had the certificate of occupancy. The team had pulled it off! The house speaks for itself. The classic Windsor exterior with modern details and finishes, and the large flowing spaces blend perfectly creating an extraordinary home. When I stopped by the day before Thanksgiving, music was playing on the pool deck and I was greeted and congratulated by some very happy members of the owners’ family. We spoke briefly and they jumped in the pool and I went home to thaw the turkey. By John Huryn, Huryn Construction

n innovative eco-fashion line is inspiring a little change to make the world a more fashionable place. Meet this local PR and marketing firm that is making a positive difference in our environment! Q: Who started the 'Garbage Gone Glam' idea? A: I did! My name is Kristen Alyce. After working for NY Couture Fashion Week during college and seeing the impact that fashion has on society, I knew that with my background in Fine Art I could find a way to use that same impact to better our planet. I realized that even as a college student living with 3 girls we created so much waste it was incredible! So I started saving the mass amounts of plastic bags, magazines, boxes, and packaging on a daily basis. I created the first dress (mainly for fun to test my creativity) out of plastic bags and rolled magazines. People loved it, so after years of production assisting and watching shows from the sidelines I created 12 dresses to debut in West Palm Beach, FL. We drew out over 500 people to my very first show as producer and designer! Q: Where is ‘Garbage Gone Glam’ based? A: “Glam,” as we call it, is based in Palm Beach and New York City. Q: What is the idea behind 'Garbage Gone Glam'? A: Our tagline is “Inspire a Little Change.” People are fearful of big (inconvenient) changes, so we don’t tell everyone to change everything. We simply seek to inspire others to walk the few extra steps to find the blue bin instead of the trash cans. Save your plastic bags and reuse them instead of tossing them or, even better, ask for paper instead of plastic. The little things add up to big changes. Q: Have you had much interest from buyers for the dresses? A: Everyone wants a dress! Small businesses, larger companies, teenagers, socialites—we have 10s of 1000s of followers over our social media outlets and they are waiting for something they can buy. We currently only work B2B, which has been extremely successful. Some of our favorite dresses have been for local companies like The Palm Beach Post, The Kravis Center, Napleton Hyundai, and Beyond Organic. Q: Do people usually buy the dresses for formal occasions or informal? A: The dresses are mostly used for campaigns or events. They attract some pretty wild attention. If a booth at a trade show has 1 or 2 of our models in dresses - they steal the show. People walk, sometimes run, up to the girls asking them what they’re selling or what they’re wearing. Q: Is it just dresses that you design? A: We definitely specialize in cocktail dresses and ball gowns, but we do have a line for men! Ties of all kinds, custom suit jackets, pants, and board shorts.

Our Newest Wedding Venue

N

Up the Creek Farms

Nestled in a peaceful, rural setting just a thirty minute drive north of Vero is a new historic and charming event venue: Up the Creek Farms. Situated on over eight secluded acres, the venue offers a unique and charming taste of old Florida. Majestic oaks draped in Spanish moss, a pristine creek running the length of the property, and the historic Decklan House B&B present a truly exceptional palette on which to create your special event. For instance, there are many beautiful sites to choose from for a romantic and intimate outdoor wedding ceremony. The Boathouse (6000 sq. ft. for receptions) completes the picture with its open air feel, crystal chandeliers and custom bar. The French doors lead to the east wrap-around porch with spectacular views. The Boathouse provides all the modern amenities: air conditioning, catering kitchen, and beautifully appointed bathrooms you would require for such a special occasion. Throw in a variety of vintage and unusual props provided by sister company, Crystal and Crates Vintage Rentals, and you have endless possibilities. Up the Creek Farms is owned and operated by Jessica Tuten and her fiancĂŠ, Tim Watson. Jessica was actually raised on the property in the Decklan House, an 1878 farmhouse (sitting on a hill and up the creek) that was lovingly converted into a Bed & Breakfast used exclusively for weddings and events. Having been in the restaurant and management business, Jessica has brought her knowledge and passion for event coordination back to her roots. utomobile safety is an important topic for all of our loved ones including those with four legs. Whether you are driving across town to the dog park with your furry companion or going on an extended family trip, we want everyone to arrive safely! Just as we would never leave our kids in the car when we run into the store to do an errand, we must never leave our pets alone inside the car when they accompany us around town. A car’s temperature can get dangerously hot in a short amount of time even with the windows cracked and even when the temperature outside does not appear hot. In Florida’s beautiful, sub-tropical climate, pets can become seriously ill quickly, possibly resulting in death due to heatstroke. We must equally be mindful of the weather when we travel with our pets to colder, northern regions. In icy climates, pets can suffer serious illness and even death from exposure to frigid temperatures. Temperature is not the only concern when transporting our pets in a car. Just as we use seat belts and car seats for our kids, we should always remember to include safe seating for our pets. For instance, cats and small dogs should ride in a carrier case or be securely positioned in a harness. Riding in a car can create anxiety and fear in our pets causing them to huddle on the floorboard and get under our feet or, worse, jump into our lap and cling to our neck, possibly impairing our vision or arm movements. Pets not secured inside a vehicle may suffer the impact of a car crash or become injured by the air bag. The potential for harm also exists when dogs hang their heads outside a car window while traveling. They may experience unexpected foreign objects hitting their eyes or be ejected through the window due to a collision or sudden stop. Lastly, dogs should never be transported unsecured in the back of a pickup truck. Dogs can jump out of the back or inadvertently be ejected and experience injury from the impact or, more seriously, be hit by an oncoming car. Remember, we want what is best for every member of the family. Weigh the benefits versus the risks of traveling with beloved pets. If you choose to have them accompany you, always make their safety your first priority.

eat shop play beach safety

Brandon, photo by Lee Ingardi

BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

horoscope

Happy Spring! Finally, we are getting some relief from the Uranus/Pluto square, which made things a little tense during January and February. There are two big upcoming events: March 20th is the Solar Eclipse and April 4th is the total Lunar Eclipse. Everyone should mark these days on their calendars, as things will be heightened. ARIES: The Sun, Venus, and Mars will all be in Aries in March. There is no way to avoid getting attention, especially when you add Jupiter in Leo visiting your section of love and romance. Finally, you are getting a much needed career break as well. After the last few months, you deserve all this good news.

LIBRA: Your mission this March is to make your work more important. You need to wake up looking forward to your job. If you don’t feel this, it is time to make a change. Between April 22 and April 26th, Venus (your ruling planet) is making a nice aspect with the planet of good fortune, Jupiter. Use those days to “make hay while the sun shines.”

TAURUS: There is a Full Moon on March 5th, in your fifth house of lovers and playmates. If single, try to be out and about, as you never know who you might meet. Venus, the planet of love (and your ruling planet) enters Taurus on March 17th until April 11th. You are certainly getting some action in the romance department.

SCORPIO: You have quite a romantic March coming up! Just be careful around March 11th as the aspects indicate some upheaval. Be careful driving and avoid arguments. On April 20th, the Sun enters Taurus and enters your area of one-to-one relationships. Let the fun begin!

GEMINI: You have been very focused on work these past few months. In early March, there is a pleasant aspect activating everything having to do with groups and communication. If you are thinking of signing up for a workshop, go for it! It might be a life changer. The Lunar Eclipse on April 4th should make you feel pleased with the way your life is moving forward. CANCER: There is a Solar Eclipse in your fellow water sign of Pisces, on March 20, bringing either travel or new learning experiences. Things are happening fast in the work department, so be prepared. The New Moon on April 18th deals with practical and professional matters. Just keep your focus, and know that all this energy you are putting forth in your career is going to pay off. LEO: You are in for some surprising news around March 3rd. Things are sparking up in a good way. That total Solar Eclipse on March 20th wants you to focus on serious matters. Watch your thoughts and actions. Around April 4th you may be charming people with your ability to communicate. Try to resist the urge to escape from your duties. You are in the planting seeds stage for a few new projects, so be patient. VIRGO: The Full Moon is in Virgo on March 5th. You are not normally one to take center stage, but you are clearly in the limelight. On March 20th you may be entering a new partnership. It could be a business deal or something more personal. During the entire month of April, there is a lot of emphasis on your financial situation. Virgos are very detail oriented, and you will find that all your careful planning is starting to reap rewards.

SAGITTARIUS: If you need to take a break, try to do it around March 3rd. You’ve been through some fiery times recently. Everything in your life will start to simmer down by mid March. April brings more emphasis on partnerships. You will be in the mood for play around the new Moon on April 18th. CAPRICORN: March 3rd is a big day for all goats. You may be happily surprised by the attention you are receiving for successfully completing a recent project. April brings more notoriety, and your career seems to be in full swing. Your fifth house of lovers is being visited by sensual Taurus in April. Make sure you take time for romance. Try not to work seven days a week! AQUARIUS: Thankfully, the start of March feels like the light has appeared at the end of the tunnel. You have more energy than you’ve had in months. The lunar eclipse on April 4th highlights your spiritual side. The stresses of the last few months are finally easing up, and you feel divinely protected. PISCES: You may be more sensitive than usual around the Full Moon on March 5th. Just lay low and smile often. Your goal is to respond rather than react. Lots of interesting surprises in store for you in April. Make sure you have moments for quiet reflection. Sometimes you never stop moving and this means you are out of balance. Even if it is just five minutes a day, try to be still.

Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate. Written by Leslie McGuirk www.luckystarsastrology.com, www.lesliemcguirk.com
