life well said

There are places in Florida that are so special I hope that one day, you’ll go visit. Everglades National Park near Homestead is one of those places. This issue, we tracked down a young photographer who spends most of his free time exploring the ‘Glades. He goes “off the grid” quite frequently, discovering the wild and vast wetlands of South Florida. You might say it’s his happy place. We are honored to be showcasing Joel Roque’s amazing photography in this issue. He has a true gift of evoking emotion with everything he captures. Cruising down the road less traveled will take you through Homestead, a small suburb caught in the middle between two of Florida’s national parks: Biscayne to the east and the Everglades to the west. You may remember, in 1992, Homestead was devastated by Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm. Its historical landmarks like Robert is Here, Hotel Redlands and the historic Walton House are just a few places to put on your “must do” list when visiting this quaint little south Florida town. Living on the Treasure Coast allows us to venture just a little farther south to explore a true Florida treasure, Everglades National Park, a 1.5-million-acre wetland preserve. It’s also designated as an International Biosphere Reserve. Travel south, explore the real Florida, unplug and go off the grid for a change of scenery. Enjoy this truly remarkable place before it’s too late…

this is us

Penny: Listen to me. I am only going to say this once. We are going on the trip to the Everglades now. It’s going to be rough. It’s going to feel like we are on the water for a long time, so it’s going to be hard to stay alert. It’s going to be even harder to be quiet, but you have to do both. There will be big snakes. That EAT alligators. There will be mosquitos, tons of them. You have to do every single thing I say or we won’t make it. ESCAPE to the

EVERGLADES The River of Grass

T

he Everglades is a majestic place where time stands still. Here, you can see what Florida used to look like—endless shades of green and blue, countless birds and alligators, sunrises and sunsets that stretch for as far as the eye can see – before the swamps were drained and development crept in. Everglades National Park is an incredibly biodiverse ecosystem comprised of 1.5 million acres of spectacular wetland. It’s also a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance and it’s protected under the Cartagena Treaty. There’s no denying it’s a special place. If you’ve ever visited a national park, you might have noticed the discernable difference between the land inside the park and the land beyond the perimeter. The park is hallowed ground; it’s protected and the land and the species that inhabit it seem to know, too. The wildlife roams a little more freely. The landscape is stunning and as you explore it, you find yourself thinking aloud, “I see why this is protected, why it’s a national park.” Turn the page to read about two of the gateways to Everglades National Park, Flamingo and Shark Valley. These are great places to start your adventure. And while the park is the main attraction in these parts, there are some great attractions beyond the boundaries, like the towns of Homestead and Redland. Whether you like living off the grid in a chickee hut or you prefer more comfortable accommodations, we’ve got something for everyone. Take a day trip down to the ‘Glades for a change of scenery, or better yet, make a long weekend out of it and take your time exploring the River of Grass. It’s time well spent.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK

Bucket List

Boating: Most of the park is only accessible by water, so boating is a popular way to explore the Everglades. Book a tour or bring your own boat. Nothing beats seeing the Glades by water! Bird watching: With more than 360 different species, bird watching is one of the most rewarding activities in the Everglades! Camping: Whether you’re front country camping in an RV or backcountry camping in a tent or chickee (winter is the ideal season), the Everglades offer a variety of camping options. Paddling: Trips range from a few hours, to a few days depending on the length of the paddle trail. Don’t have your own kayak or canoe? There are several rental locations around the park. Slough slogging: Get your feet wet and see the less-explored side of the Everglades! This guided walk provides an immersive experience through the River of Grass. Bicycling: Explore the beautiful bike trails that the Everglades offers! Popular trails include Shark Valley, Old Ingraham Highway, Long Pine Key Nature Trail, Snake Bight and Rowdy Bend. Hiking: Feeling adventurous? Hop on one of the many hiking trails in the Everglades and explore a diversity of habitats and wildlife!

I

f you’re looking to fully immerse yourself in the subtropical wilderness, head to the southernmost tip of Florida’s peninsula and make Flamingo your basecamp. One of four gateways to Everglades National Park, Flamingo offers the most amenities and lodging options to please a variety of campers. Start at the Flamingo Visitor Center, which offers park information, educational displays, brochures and backcountry permits. There are campground facilities, a public boat ramp, marina store, plus hiking and paddling trails nearby. It’s located at 1 Flamingo Lodge Highway in Homestead, open 8am to 4:30pm daily. For more information, visit NPS.gov/Ever.

Backcountry Camping For those looking for an adventure, paddle into the Everglades backcountry and camp in a chickee. These sheltered camping platforms rise from the water—little man-made islands for your camping pleasure. They’re elevated 10- by 12-foot wooden platforms with roofs and some have a self-contained toilet nearby. Be sure to bring a free-standing tent or hammock; stakes/ nails are not allowed. Broad River, Harney River and Pearl Bay are just a few of the chickees available by permit. All 45 backcountry sites (comprised of a combination of beach, ground and chickee sites) are only accessible by water and campers must obtain permits at the Flamingo Visitor Center and the Gulf Coast Visitor Contact Station open daily, from 8am to 4:30pm. Campers must register in person and while permits are free, they can only be obtained 24 hours or less in advance of the start of your trip. Remember to pack out what you pack in and leave no trace. Tent/RV Camping Flamingo Campground has 234 drive-up sites open year-round with access to showers, two dump stations, picnic tables, grills and an amphitheater for winter programs. Sites at the T Loop campground include pull-through parking spaces and a few with electrical hookups. Reservations are suggested for these campsites. Boaters will enjoy the amenities at the Flamingo Marina, which can accommodate boats with electric and water hookups. The channel accommodates boats with a draft of four feet or less. Fuel is available during store hours, 8am to 7pm. There are restrooms (no showers) and Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

essential supplies for sale at the marina store. There’s also a food truck with sandwiches, salads, tacos and a variety of options, open daily from 11am to 6pm (subject to change). Another seasonal camping option is Long Pine Key Campground. It’s near the Homestead entrance to the Everglades, open November 1 through April 30 (closed May 1 through October 31). Large, semi-private sites are located in a forest of tall pines adjacent to Long Pine Key Trail and only a few miles from the Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm. It features 108 drive-up sites for tents and RVs available on a first-come, first-served basis for $20/night. Amenities include restrooms, showers, water and dump station with fresh water fill. A picnic area is nearby, with fire grates and restrooms. There’s also a fishing pond and an amphitheater for winter programs. A limited number of sites can be reserved in advance. Call Everglades guest services, (855) 708-2207, to determine availability.

Glamping on a Houseboat Another lodging option is to stay aboard a houseboat. The 42-foot houseboats at Flamingo Marina sleep a maximum of six people and are fully equipped with all the necessities and amenities you might need. Prices start at $300/night. Visit FlamingoEverglades.com for information and reservations.

Boat Tour If you don’t have a boat or are just visiting for the day, not to worry. From the Flamingo Marina, visitors can still tour Whitewater Bay Backcountry and Florida Bay by boat. The 90-minute Everglades Backcountry Tour departs daily at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. The tour travels up the Buttonwood Canal through Coot Bay and Tarpon Creek into the mouth of Whitewater Bay. The 90-minute Florida Bay Tour departs daily at 12pm, 2pm and 4:30pm (varies with changing sunset times.) Tour guides are trained naturalists who describe the unique flora and fauna of the Everglades while outlining the rich history of Flamingo and Everglades National Park. Tickets are $35/adults and $17.50/children 5-12. Purchase tickets at the marina store, visit FlamingoEverglades.com, or call (352) 701-6581 for more information.

SLOW YOUR ROLL Visit Homestead and Redland

T

his spring, head to Homestead and Redland, where farmers live harmoniously parallel to the bustling metropolis of Miami. If you’re looking for a slower pace and a taste of the tropics, this is the place for you. Homestead and Redland are a gateway to the Everglades. Unfortunately, they found themselves in the eye of Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm that pummeled the area in 1992. The most destructive storm in Florida’s history leveled the towns and Homestead was ground zero. After the devastation, it took nearly two decades to repair, rebuild and repopulate, but now, Homestead, Redland and their exotic, tropical agriculture industry is thriving. In addition to Everglades National Park, landmark attractions like Coral Castle, Everglades Alligator Farm, Monkey Jungle and Robert is Here (see page 32) continue to entertain tourists and locals alike. Redland is a mecca for orchids and tropical fruit. Be sure to visit Fruit and Spice Park, a 37-acre subtropical paradise with more than 500 varieties of exotic fruits, herbs, spices and nuts from around the world. Visitors can sample fallen fruit (harvesting from plants is not permitted) and gardeners can make advance arrangements with the management to collect seeds and cuttings. There are a number of classes, workshops and botanical tours available throughout the year for those who wish to strengthen their green thumbs. Learn more at RedlandFruitandSpice.com. Looking for a place to stay? Try Hotel Redland, a historic hotel built in 1904 as the town’s first hotel, it has Victorian-style rooms with antique furniture. The hotel’s restaurant has been turned into a haven for Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, with guitar music on the weekends. Find it at 5 S. Flagler Avenue in Homestead. Make your reservation at HotelRedland.com. Much like the slow, meandering waters of the River of Grass, spend a weekend lazily enjoying the relaxed pace of Homestead and Redland, and savor the fruits this fertile land and tropical climate produces.

ROBERT IS HERE

H

is milkshakes bring all the boys and girls to the ‘Glades. OK, maybe that’s a stretch. The Everglades are the main attraction. However, if you’re in the Homestead area on your way out west to the River of Grass, be sure to stop at Robert is Here, a farm stand on steroids. And yes, they sell milkshakes… glorious, fruity milkshakes made fresh to order with simple ingredients: fruit, milk and ice (and sugar, honey or Splenda, if you like). This family-owned destination has humble beginnings. It all started with a 6-year-old named Robert on the side of the road selling cucumbers. Nobody stopped. The next day, a hand painted sign appeared that read, “Robert is Here!” The rest, as they say, is history. The fruit stand has grown tremendously throughout the years and now features an animal farm, play area, picnic tables, even live music on weekends and holidays. In addition to the usual tomatoes and greens, Robert is Here offers a bountiful selection of tropical fruit, many of which you’ve probably never even heard of before. Depending on the season, you’ll find black sapote, caimito, canistel, dragon fruit, guanabana, jaboticaba, jackfruit, and so much more. Be adventurous and try something new! Bonus: many of these can be made into a milkshake! Check the menu as it changes with the season. Kids and adults alike will delight their tastebuds when they try miracle fruit, a delicacy available year-round. Eat this tiny red berry and afterwards, everything you eat or drink will taste sweet for about one hour. To eat, gently break the skin with your teeth and work the skin and fruit off the seed. When life hands you lemons, eat miracle fruit and lemons will taste like lemonade! Robert is Here is located at 19200 S.W. 344th Street in Homestead and is open daily from 8am to 7pm, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Learn more at RobertisHere.com. GHOST ORCHIDS On the Edge of Extinction

I

t’s estimated that every day, almost 150 different species go extinct. While this problem is impacting major ecosystems like rainforests primarily, its effects are much more far-reaching than what we might think. Florida is home to some of the most incredibly biologically diverse locations in the country, from the Indian River Lagoon to the Everglades. Sadly, in the same way that many species are disappearing internationally, many are disappearing within our own state, jeopardizing our delicate and prized wildlife refuges. Some species, like the western black rhinoceros, received immense media coverage when the last of its kind disappeared. Although tragic, there are hundreds of species that go extinct without a soul in the world knowing about it. Many simply just disappear without a trace, vanishing silently into the history books. The vast majority are so well hidden that they don’t even get discovered in the first place, and simply fade in and out of time like ghosts. On occasion, however, we are lucky enough to spot one that’s on its last leg, in hopes that we can spread awareness and stop its extinction. The ghost orchid is an incredibly rare species of plant that thrives in the Everglades wetlands. Throughout the years, the beauty of the plant has made it a prime target for thieves and exotic plant collectors, decimating its population. Furthermore, it can only be pollinated by a single species of moth, making it exceptionally rare. While finding these orchids in nature is already difficult enough, finding a flowering plant is twice as hard, as they only bloom for three weeks out of the entire year, if that at all. In a trip into these wetlands, I saw several ghost orchids that had their flat, tendril like roots wrapped around tree trunks, but they were dormant. Only one of the ghost orchids we saw was in full bloom. Sitting just about head high on a pond-apple tree, the single flower was nearly impossible to spot. It sat delicately above a bed of ferns, with its frog-leg like petals outstretched to either side. In an incredible stroke of luck, not only had we found one of these incredibly rare flowers, but it was in a perfect position to be photographed. I hope that by the end of my lifetime, these plants will not only continue to live on in these photographs, but in their natural habitat as well.

Photography, I Love It!

W

hat makes photography so glorious for me is the adventure— to get out and explore. It doesn’t matter where I am, I’m exploring and the creative visions kick in, from capturing the beauty of simple mangroves and leaves we all walk by, to the beauty of massive landscapes that captivate us all. The smaller things attract my eye since we don’t appreciate them often. Photography has taught me to appreciate it all and has showed me just how much beauty surrounds us. I chose outdoor photography and landscapes because Mother Nature makes me feel alive. I want to breathe the fresh air and snap that shutter button; share it with the world and allow them to see through my eyes. I try to portray peace and calm, but boldly. A mere thought of fascination, to be able to freeze time for a second. That moment is gone, yet I still hold it and carry it with me. The post process is my unique signature; it’s what allows me to show the viewer what I think that image should look like. My exploring has a sense of purpose with a camera in hand. No solitary walks, just deep exploration and growth for appreciation, since my eye is working to find new compositions. Out on a hike, camping in the wilderness, and camera in hand: that brings me joy and peace. I am humbled and grateful for it. Follow Joel Roque Photography on

Shark Valley Everglades National Park for Every Age

C

ontrary to the name, alligators are the stars of the Shark Valley entrance of Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Shark Valley is a family-friendly destination that serves as a great introduction to Everglades National Park. This sprawling landscape is teeming with alligators and a diversity of flora and fauna. Located 25 miles west of the Florida Turnpike, the Shark Valley Visitor Center offers educational displays including a short informational video, gift shop, nature trails, snacks and restrooms. A great way to learn about this biodiverse ecosystem is to sit back, relax, and enjoy a tram tour led by a trained naturalist. The tram goes to the observation tower and back (about two hours) and is available every hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($25/adults, $19/seniors, $12.75/children, free for children 2 and under). Advance online purchase is recommended. Visit SharkValleyTramTours.com or if online registrations have closed, call the reservation line to check tour availability and make your reservations, (305) 221-8455. Be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled tour time.

If you’d like to do the 15-mile loop at your own pace, rent a bike ($9/per hour, first come, first served) or BYOB - bring your own bike and experience the ‘Glades up close and personal. The road is well paved and suitable for most bikes. Biking is a great option for photographers and birders! TIP: Weekdays are the ideal time to visit, but if you must go on the weekend, get there early as the parking lot fills up quickly. An alternative option is to park outside the gate and walk or ride your bike in. The cooler months are the best time to visit the Everglades; in the summer, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon and stay hydrated! Sun protection is a must any time of year. The entrance fee is $30/vehicle, good for one week throughout Everglades National Park, or buy an annual pass for $55. Plan your visit at NPS.gov/Ever.

Take an Airboat Ride Through Miccosukee History

L

ong before Columbus, there was the Miccosukee Tribe— but they didn’t always call the Everglades home. Originally part of the Creek Nation, the Miccosukee migrated to Florida before it was part of the United States. Approximately 100 Mikasuki-speaking Creeks avoided capture and hid out in the Everglades during the Indian Wars of the 1800s, while the majority of the Miccosukee were sent west. It wasn’t until 1962 that the tribe was federally recognized. Today, there are 600+ Miccosukee tribal members, direct descendants of those who eluded capture in the 1800s and sought refuge in the Everglades. There are four reservation areas and the Tamiami Trail Reservation Area, 40 miles west of Miami, is presently the site of most tribal operations and the center of the Miccosukee population. Experience Miccosukee history, culture and lifestyle by visiting the Miccosukee Indian Village, just west of the Shark Valley entrance of Everglades National Park. Interact with a variety of demonstrators and displays, from woodcarving and patchwork, to beadwork, basket weaving and doll making. Guided tours are available from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and alligator shows allow visitors to get up close and learn how these fascinating reptiles have thrived in the ‘Glades for centuries. Learn about Miccosukee history and culture by watching a short film, viewing historical artifacts, as well as paintings and photographs by tribal artists. Crafts range from authentic Miccosukee patchwork and beadwork to Navajo silver jewelry, available for purchase at the Miccosukee Gift Shop. Museum admission is $15/adults, $8/children 6-12, and free for children five and under. Take an exhilarating airboat ride through the beautiful and expansive River of Grass to a hammock-style Indian Camp that has belonged to the

same Miccosukee family for more than 100 years. Explore the camp and watch for gators as you take in the gorgeous view. Airboat rides are $20/ adults, $12/children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. Be sure to eat at the Miccosukee Restaurant and try fry bread, pumpkin bread, frog legs, gator, catfish, as well as American cuisine. The Miccosukee Indian Village is open daily, 9am to 5pm and is located at mile marker 36 on U.S. 41 west of Miami. Learn more at Miccosukee.com.

Sea Turtles, Wildlife and Plastics, Oh My!

I

f you’re walking anywhere on our planet, whether in town, on a hiking trail, or on the beach, chances are you’ll see single use plastic that has been littered along the way. What exactly is a single use plastic item? Why are we hearing more about it in 2019? Single use plastic production and use accounts for 300 million tons of plastic waste EVERY YEAR. Only 9 percent is recycled, 12 percent is incinerated and 79 percent ends up in dumps, landfills and our environment. These items include plastic bags, plastic water bottles and lids, straws, Photo by ishan, @seefromthesky shampoo bottles, freezer bags and ice cream containers. Other items are plastic cutlery, plates, cups, hot drink cups, and protective plastic on the foam meat containers as well as the plastic food wrappers. The most common item manufactured is the plastic bag that has become a habitual convenience use for the consumer. Did you know that 5 TRILLION plastic bags are used each year? That equates to being able to encircle the world seven times with plastic Photo by Brian Yurasits, @brian-yuri bags. ONE MILLION plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute. The most common type of plastic found in the environment is the cigarette butt. Cigarette butts contain tiny plastic fibers that never deteriorate and never go away. Plastic straws are another major problem, not only for the environment, but our innocent and vulnerable wildlife. We’ve all seen the picture of the loggerhead sea turtle with a straw sticking out of her nose. There are countless other pictures of plastic bags, plastic rings from canned six pack beverages and bottle caps in the mouths and stomachs of birds and wildlife. The only way to fight this rising problem is for human intervention. So, what can we do? Change our habits! The easiest way is to skip the straw. Straw use is a habit, not a necessity. Purchase a reusable water bottle and keep it with you. Take your bags with you to the store. Ask for paper bags if you forgot your reusable ones. Coastal Connections, Inc. is a local Vero Beach non-profit focused on using education and interactive programs to connect people to wildlife and our 2019 initiative is PLASTIC REDUCTION. We’ll be enhancing our reusable water bottle and bag program working with outdoor youth organizations, growing the number of coastal cleanups we host throughout the year, and the best yet: raising money to install reusable water bottle filling stations near our beaches! To support Coastal Connections or get more involved in our plastic reduction efforts, visit Coastal-Connections.org. Remember, plastics NEVER go away. Plastic just gets smaller and smaller and smaller. Connect with us at Coastal-Connections.org. @coastalconnectionsinc @coastalconnections_inc

Turtle Nesting Season Begins in South Florida

L

ast March, I was snorkeling just a few hundred yards from shore when I had one of the most memorable experiences of my life. After glimpsing a dark shadow, I slipped off the edge of our boat, expecting to see a manta ray. But, as I dipped beneath the surface, I glimpsed something much rarer—a leatherback sea turtle. Leatherbacks are one of five species that cruise Florida waters, along with the green turtle, hawksbill, Kemp’s Ridley, and loggerhead. While leatherbacks usually inhabit the open ocean, during nesting season, females venture closer to the beach to lay their eggs in the sand. With threats ranging from light pollution, entanglement in fishing gear and illegal harvesting, sea turtles are all protected under the Endangered Species Act and Florida is an important nesting ground for three of these species. Sea turtle nesting season in South Florida begins March 1 and ends October 31. The first turtles to begin nesting are leatherbacks—the largest of the seven species of marine turtle and named for their rubbery shell. These reptiles can reach up to seven feet and weigh 2,000 pounds. Florida is the only state in the continental United States where they regularly nest and most of these nests happen on the east coast, with 50 percent happening right in Palm Beach County, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Loggerheads, so named for their large heads, are the most common turtle seen in Florida. They occur in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, but the U.S. southeastern coast has the highest number of nests, with about 90 percent of those nests happening in Florida, usually beginning in April. Green sea turtles are the last turtle to nest, beginning around June. As protected species, it’s illegal to harass or disturb sea turtles. If you happen to witness a nesting female, be sure to keep your distance so she doesn’t abandon her nest and return to the ocean, wasting valuable energy. Also, be sure to avoid using bright white lights, which can be disorienting. If you’re interested in viewing nesting turtles, there are ways to view them safely by going on guided night walks with organizations like Florida Oceanographic Society in Stuart” and Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.

I began the year swimming alongside one of the largest reptiles in the world. Months later, as the summer came to an end, I had the chance work with biologists and photograph hatchlings entering the ocean for the first time. Few of those hatchlings will survive to adulthood, but the females that do will return to that same beach decades later to lay their own eggs. Bethany Augliere is a dolphin biologist with the Wild Dolphin Project based out of Jupiter, Florida, with a background in wildlife and marine science. She also works as a freelance writer and photographer. You can view her work at BethanyAugliere.com or on @bethanyaugliere.

Spring is in the Air

I

t’s been an interesting, nippy winter! I hope everyone enjoyed it, but please bring back the longer, warmer, sunny days! Spring is in the air and the fishing is about as good as it gets. The inshore fishing has been really good with the Indian River Lagoon getting cleaner. With new turtle grass and good filtration, the water has been as clear as I can remember. The flats and spoil islands are rich with speckled trout, big snook, and more redfish than most of us have ever witnessed. Let’s all do our part and help support all the great efforts that the local community is working on to help keep our estuary healthy. Offshore was one of epic proportions. The Pelican Yacht Club annual sailfish tournament broke records with one day totals of more than 800 released during the three-day tournament, with multiple boats catching 30+ sails in a day! Bring on the spring weather! Remember to practice and encourage safe boating and fishing throughout or local waters. Tight lines and please support the local charities helping our estuary. Until next time, this is Capt. Christian Yergens.

An Exercise in Trust

W

ithin five swift minutes of meeting Chris Gurny, three things become abundantly clear. He is passionate, carries a trove of fitness knowledge and still remains true to his roots. It was 30 years ago when Chris left the northeast to make Florida his home. Yet after all this time, the warm sun and tropical address have failed to erase one particular trait. He still talks with the velocity of a New Yorker. “I’m from the Bronx, what can I say?” he says with a grin. Chris first opened his personal training business Elite Physiques nearly 20 years ago. Every day since, he has trained, pushed and elevated hundreds of clients. However, his foray into fitness began at a much earlier age for reasons one might not suspect. As a child he had scoliosis. “My doctor recommended working out as a form of treatment for the slight curvature in my back.” Next came a love for baseball, which resulted in more time spent in the gym. He then began to study nutrition and its impact on the body. In the ensuing years, Chris worked at and managed various gyms. He even became a competitor in fitness competitions. All of this eventually led to his vision of an intimate gym, staffed by an experienced team of trainers, with a strong focus on clients and an emphasis on overall health. Thus, Elite Physiques began. “When I opened my doors, I knew, as a teacher, I was ready.” Naturally, Chris takes great pride in helping his clients achieve their physical goals. However, the most personal fulfillment stems from something entirely different. It weighs nothing but means everything: Trust. “People come to me for all kinds of reasons. Men and women from the age of 14 to 80. It’s not always about losing weight. But when I establish trust with a client, when I know what I’m doing is right and that I’m helping them to build confidence within themselves, that is huge.” Chris has seen it all throughout his indelible career, from the latest exercise fad to the gimmicky diets. But what works? Here are four major takeaways from the fitness pro: 52

March-April 2019

• Good news y’all, carbs are back! “It’s absolutely insane to completely avoid carbs. You need them. It’s all about balance.” • Realistic expectations. Don’t set yourself up for failure by being too ambitious. “If you’re eating and working out five out of seven days, you’re doing it about 80 percent right.” • Patience. Give yourself a month of honest dedication and hard work to really see results. “It’s like a month long trial to yourself. If you can last, it will pay off.” • Even a little is worth something. Only have a few spare minutes? No excuse. “Squeezing in something makes a difference.” Elite Physiques offers two locations, 12 personal trainers, a registered dietician and an in-house masseuse. For more information, email Chris at christophergurny@gmail.com.

Halo Hybrid The Fractional Laser Treatment Revolutionizing Skin Care

S

kin: It sure is complicated these days. It seems moisturizer and some sunscreen slapped on for good measure just doesn’t cut it anymore. There are a.m. creams, p.m. creams, serums and retinol. Clay masks, sheet masks, oils, facials, even vampire facials (we can thank the Kardashians for that one!) Botox, fillers, microdermabrasion, the list goes and on and on. Lest we forget all of the gadgets that promise the fountain of youth. Recently, Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop was promoting a vibrating 24-karat-gold-plated T-bar used to rub your face. No joke. So, when Nick Woltjen, a dermatology physician assistant at Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery, sat down to discuss a particular machine that is changing the landscape of laser treatment, I was curious but apprehensive. Is this just another gimmick or does it actually work? Why is he so excited about this? The machine is called Halo, a hybrid fractional laser. It’s a customized laser that reduces brown spots, shrinks pores, decreases fine lines and wrinkles, all with a minimal recovery time. “Let’s be honest, products only get you so far. To really improve your skin, you need something more,” Nick says. The in-office procedure sounds fairly simple. After cleansing the face, a topical numbing treatment is applied all over the skin. Next comes the magic. The laser, under the guided hand of a trained technician, is able to penetrate deep into the skin. Halo literature explains it as ‘deep revitalization with epidermal renewal.’ Girlfriend, this goes deep! According to Nick, just about everyone can benefit from Halo. “From a 30-year-old wanting to get rid of fine lines and sun spots to a 60-year-old looking to erase deeper lines and stubborn dark spots, all are great candidates.” And yes guys, you can do this, too. Unlike other treatments that garner big results but require major downtime, Halo is the exact opposite. After 24 hours, patients can resume wearing makeup. Peeling can be expected but not the kind that forces one to hide in a dark room, alone, watching Netflix. After those first few days, skin is smooth, fresh and glowing. Nick emphasizes Halo’s success is directly linked to who happens to be operating the machine, so do research and verify who you trust. Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery is the only cosmetic physician-based office to have this

machine in Vero Beach. They offer free consultations and will provide this form of treatment this spring. T

Functional Medicine for Modern Healthcare

he health crisis in this country is rising as the number of chronically ill Americans create an unsustainable burden to our current healthcare system. Patients seeking care for chronic diseases account for 86 percent of all healthcare costs, reaching $3.2 trillion in 2015 alone. Yet the myopic politically-focused debate over who is or isn’t going to pay for insurance coverage continues to occlude the question why so many people become unhealthy in the first place. Most Americans have been indoctrinated into a sick-care system that for the past several decades has advocated taking an antibiotic for the common viral cold, eating the obesogenic standard American diet fueled by convenience and destructive agricultural practices, accepting those extra 20-plus pounds as the inevitable process of aging, ignoring the indisputable connection between emotional issues and physical illness, and treating to standards of care rather than the patient’s unique needs. Eventually, patients must resign to manage their resulting disease with increasingly costly prescription medications including those to treat the side effects of the first. Now is the time for a paradigm shift. We need to better understand how to preserve health. Fortunately, functional medicine offers a promising solution to the core of the health crisis. This model of health care views the body as an inextricably linked whole organism, rather than a dissection into various medical specialties. Each physiological system, the digestive, nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, respiratory, immune and musculoskeletal system is thoroughly examined and treated to restore an optimal state of function. Practitioners support the healing process by seeking, identifying and correcting the genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that often shift a person’s health from well to ill. Lab panels include tests for intracellular vitamin and nutrient levels, inflammatory markers, gut microbiome infections or dysbiosis, food sensitivities, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, adrenal health, hormone evaluations, heavy

metal testing and exposure to environmental chemical toxins and mold. Through the use of diet and scientifically researched, evidence-based nutritional supplements, many patients find the path back to health. You might wonder if functional medicine has validity. Consider that Cleveland Clinic is the first major medical center to open a functional medicine department currently led by Mark Hyman, MD. Dr. Hyman, an esteemed clinician and published author, is a pioneer in functional medicine, its research and application to clinical practice. So why aren’t all doctors practicing functional medicine? Typically, a 15-year gap lies between scientific discovery and its implementation in the practice of medicine. Functional medicine practitioners are choosing to jump ahead of the curve by returning to the classroom now to bring this innovative knowledge back to their patients. If you suffer with any of the following health issues, functional medicine could offer options for treatment: allergies, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, fatigue, insomnia, excess weight and slow metabolism, migraines and headaches, digestive disorders, anxiety, depression, hormonal issues and even mild cognitive decline and dementia. At Indian River Acupuncture, Angela King, AP, DOM offers functional medicine consults by appointment. She has received extensive training in functional medicine through the University of Miami and many national conferences and can assist you in your journey back to health. Dentures in a Glass A Thing of the Past

F

ew things carry more weight than a trustworthy testimonial. Judging by the Texas-sized grin Norman Powell sports these days, his experience may be one worth listening to. For Norman, the trouble all started at Wendy’s. “I was enjoying a hamburger when suddenly, a tooth was loose.” Unfortunately, that ‘loose tooth’ turned into a much bigger problem. Norman needed new upper teeth. A Vero Beach resident for nearly 20 years, he knew he was in good hands with Vero Implant and Esthetic Dentistry. The real dilemma was what option to select, dentures or implants? “I knew dentures were more maintenance. In my mind, anything would be better than false teeth.” After a consultation, a plan of action was created. Norman would receive a full set of upper implants. In 2018, he underwent a procedure that lasted approximately two and a half hours. As for his recovery time, Norman says, “I was fully recovered within a day.” We sat down with the owners of Vero Implant and Esthetic Dentistry, Dr. Adam Jones and Dr. Giuliana Diaz Jones, to learn about the latest advancements in dentures.

the rest of their lives. We often see a lower quality of life because patients can’t eat the same foods as they did when they had teeth. Q: What are hybrid dentures? A: This term explains how we use dental implants to eliminate 99 percent of patients’ problems with removable dentures. We use dental implants to anchor an entire row of fixed teeth. In essence, we solve the problems of loose dentures, allowing patients to eat all the foods they used to eat. Sometimes this process can be accomplished in just one day! Q: Really? You can give patients new teeth in just one day? A: There’s a planning appointment required before the BIG DAY, but yes, we can give patients a new row of teeth in just one day. If the implants are stable during surgery, we can attach a new set of teeth that same day. Learn more at VeroImplantDentistry.com. Vero Implant and Esthetic Dentistry

Q: What are some common problems people have with their dentures? A: A lack of stability for the lower denture. Patients often say their lower denture tends to “float.” Patients also continue to lose their upper and lower jaw bone after the teeth are removed. This process continues for

If Houses Could Talk

F

or as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with houses. When I was a little girl, I built houses of every size and shape imaginable. I instinctively knew how to make my doll houses cozy, my sand castles grand and my Lincoln Log cabins very realistic. I learned that big or small, every home has an energy and houses need lots of love, just like people do! Sunshine and fresh air! Cut flowers in a jar; clotheslines and laundry; the hum of a dishwasher; soft music playing and fragrant candles lit; the smell of comfort food cooking and apple pies baking; these are some of the things my grandmother taught me about how make a house a home. To me, your home is living art. Just like how you make your tea or serve your coffee; how you welcome your visitors or tenants; or if you’re a realtor like me, how you welcome your buyers into a home that’s for sale. I love houses! Nothing thrills me more than a fabulous house. Big or small, they speak to me and always have. As soon as I graduated from high school, I started a business taking care of famous rock bands. Renting them houses, cooking for them and cleaning, too! I have more than 40 credit lines on albums from bands like the Eagles, Crosby Stills and Nash, Jimmy Buffett, and Eric Clapton. They all basically say thank you for the accommodations and good vibes, thank you for making us feel at home! It was a natural segue for me to become a realtor after selling the Bee Gees three of the most expensive houses in Miami Beach. My career took off from there! To this day it gives me great pleasure to take all of the lessons learned from my grandmother on how to make a house a home and integrate that into my daily business and life. You know the saying, “If houses could talk, what stories they could tell?” Well, take a moment and listen. Look around. They will tell you everything you need to know. Love, loss, sadness and joy. We all experience these feelings and somehow our homes do too!

Celebrating Beauty for Four Generations

M

aybe she’s born with it… Phyllis Floyd Duffey, born and raised in Vero Beach, simply enjoyed making men and women beautiful. She worked as a full-time hairdresser and owned The Patio Salon on Beachland Boulevard in Vero Beach back in the 1980s. Her mother, Lillian Floyd, was a hairdresser as well. A passion for the beauty industry runs in their blood. Of her three children, one of Phyllis’ daughters became a hairdresser and two became nail technicians. Her two oldest daughters even worked for her at The Patio Salon. In 1993, her oldest daughter, Christine Walker, bought Studio Gabriel Salon on Ocean Drive in the Portales de Vero building with two partners. Since then, she has become the sole owner and has expanded the business several times to become a full-service salon, day spa and boutique. This family’s passion for the beauty industry did not stop there. After Christine’s middle daughter, Nicki Walker, graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, she started a career with 60

Aveda, a well-known corporation in the salon and spa industry. After a couple years of being immersed in the industry, she moved back to her roots in Vero Beach to help her mother run the family business and opened Katwalk Boutique in 2017, which offers women’s clothing and accessories. The two are now opening a second location for Studio Gabriel in the Pelican Plaza on A1A which will offer nail services, makeup and boutique clothing. These ladies believe beauty starts from within and they strive to give back to the community as much as possible. Christine Walker has continued to give to local non-profits over the years and as a result, Studio Gabriel Salon and Spa was nominated for Business Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 2018. This year, Christine is thrilled to be participating in Dancing with Vero’s Stars on May 11 to benefit the Healthy Start Coalition of Indian River County. The Greatest Gift

rowing up in a loving family in Columbus, Ohio, I never would have imagined my life taking such a dramatic turn. I remember looking in the mirror, thinking to myself, how did I manage to let myself get to this point? I had no idea how to live life without drugs or alcohol. I was exhausted. I had burned every bridge with my family and friends and would come up with every excuse for why I was doing what I was doing. The truth is, I chose to experiment with drugs and alcohol, not knowing the nightmare I would live in the years to come. I struggled for a long time trying to find my purpose in life and constantly trying to figure out where I belonged. When I came home from the military, my life began to spiral out of control. I used drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. With the help of my parents, I made the biggest decision of my life. I decided to go to treatment. I knew if I continued living the way I was, then my parents would end up losing their daughter for good. So, I hopped on a plane to Beachside Rehab in Florida. I had so many emotions running through my mind. But I distinctly remember having a sense of relief. I remember arriving and realizing that I was not alone. For the longest time I felt that I was the only one that lived this way and that was far from the truth. I was given some of the best therapy and introduced to the 12 steps, which continues to save my life today. I learned so much about myself and for the first time, I felt a part of something and was happy with my life. My family started coming around and I was able to start building my trust with them. I’ll never forget that painful time in my life. I can’t; it’s constant work. As I approach the three year mark, I’m now able to give back and help others who are just like me. It’s one of the greatest gifts. This wouldn’t be possible without the help of Beachside Rehab and the support of my family. Learn more at BeachsideRehab.com. A Tip of the Cap to Osceola Magnet School

I

t has been said that to find a true solution to an issue, one must first understand the problem. For many, it’s easier to leave the solution-finding to the next generation; however, there’s a group of individuals in our community who took the initiative and sought a solution to an observed problem. Last year, students at Osceola Magnet Elementary School noticed an excessive number of plastic water bottles with nonrecyclable plastic caps in the community and decided to raise awareness and come up with a solution for single use plastics that would involve the school and inspire others to follow. The school embarked on a “cap challenge” where students were encouraged to bring in used plastic caps. Students learned plastic bottle caps less than 2-inches wide were not recycled at our local recycling plant and that many caps that do not make it to the landfill and end up in the Indian River Lagoon and/or the Atlantic Ocean. The two-week challenge ended with more than 30,000 plastic caps collected, which were later transformed into a campus art mural to be unveiled on Earth Day 2019. Since most caps take 500 years to decompose, students decided it would be environmentally better to utilize reusable water bottles with water bottle filling station on campus. Stainless steel water bottles with the Osceola Magnet logo were sold with the profits being used to purchase a water filling station. The popularity and excitement of the station encouraged a group of parents to purchase a second water bottle filling station and both were installed during the 2018 summer break, making Osceola Magnet the first public school in Indian River County to have water bottle filling stations. Integrating the local community and the environment to teach concepts across the curriculum has been shown to increase academic achievement while also encouraging stronger ties to the community. Last year, Osceola Magnet was awarded the State of Florida School of Excellence for its state test scores; an “A” rating by the district and state; a Florida Department of Education Golden School Award for parent involvement; and a National PTA School of Excellence award. The Osceola Magnet School community hopes that their actions both encourage and empower others to make positive changes in the local and global world. Learn more at IndianRiverSchools.org.

Creativity Blossoms at Indian River Clay Collaborative

G

reat things happen when creative souls unite. The plan was generated at Inti, over lunch one day. “What if we had our own place to get together and work with clay? We could have master craftsmen come from out of town and do workshops, and we could teach classes and have clay nights! We would have keys for when we can’t sleep at night and we could go to the studio!” “Yes, yes, yes!” That was in May 2018 and the doors of the Indian River Clay collaborative opened six months later, on November 1. A few thousand dollars was collected from potters willing to pay their annual membership fees in advance, and equipment was almost entirely borrowed from the local potter community. Friends and friends of friends generously rallied around the project, donating time, paint, appliances, furniture, cash and even paper goods. Ginny Piech Street, an accomplished artist and one of the people instrumental in establishing and managing the Peacock Clay Collaborative, agreed to manage the studio. And, just like that, the potters’ dream became a reality. As of January, Indian River Clay has 20 working members, with 24-hour access, and is offering 20 classes and workshops for the winter quarter, as well as two master workshops. Although still waiting for the 501c3 non-profit status to be approved, which was filed in June and will likely be delayed by the government shut down, the studio has already offered scholarships to a veteran and his children, as well as a girl-scout troupe working on their clay badge. Plans for the future include additional scholarships and community outreach, continued educational opportunities for both the membership and the public, and upgrading and adding much needed equipment and supplies. Indian River Clay has a commitment for financial support from the Becker Foundation, pending the approval of their non-profit status, and currently accepts donations of both equipment and funds to defray the costs of educational programs and scholarships. Indian River Clay is located at 1174 S. U.S. 1 in Vero Beach. To learn more about education opportunities, events, donations and more, visit IndianRiverClay.org.

Singer/Songwriter Priscilla Renea From Vero Beach to Music Stardom

N

ot many graduates from Vero Beach High School can claim they have written songs for Madonna, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson (to name a few) and have released two albums of their own to critical acclaim. Priscilla Renea’s new album, “Coloured” is an impressive achievement, fusing soul, indie pop, electronica, rock, blues—even a touch of country and jazz. Reminiscent of Janelle Monae or Prince, Priscilla’s musical style defies easy categorization, but rewards Photo by Xaque Gruber the listener with ample pleasures. I had the great pleasure of hearing Priscilla Renea live at the ASCAP Music Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Her set, a free form collaboration with Neff-U, was among the most fiercely emotional and exciting at Sundance. And despite her growing success and reputation in music, she values her roots in Vero Beach. “My grandmother is from Wabasso, a big three-acre farm. I have written plenty of songs where I sing about growing up there,” Priscilla says. “My dad was in the Navy and so we spent every summer, Christmas, spring breaks down at my grandparent’s house. I learned to shoot, climb trees, fish, tend 68

the gardens, chickens, and throw the hatchet in Florida. I used to be really good at throwing the hatchet. My family is still in Vero. My parents own Big Head Barbeque (1955 39th Street at U.S. 1, Vero Beach). If you haven’t tried it, you gotta go!” Priscilla’s first album, “Jukebox,” released in 2009, spawned the Billboard dance hit, “Dollhouse,” but her new album “Coloured” reflects a much deeper, truer voice. Among “Coloured’s” highlights are the beautiful “Heavenly,” the powerful “Let’s Build A House,” and “Family Tree” a beautiful soulful number about her growing up in Vero Beach. Priscilla has toured the country with the Grammy-nominated Americana soul trio, The Wood Brothers. She adds, “Even though I wrote all the songs on “Jukebox,” it was other people telling me what to do versus now. I was 19 then. “Coloured” is all me.” Though she lives and works in Los Angeles these days, Priscilla brightens up when chatting about her hometown. “I am a Florida girl through and through. Florida’s a great state. I may not have appreciated Vero Beach when I was younger because everything closed up at 10 p.m., but now that I’m older, I love going back there. I’ve lived a lot of places, but nowhere is quite as special as Vero Beach.” “Coloured” is available on i-Tunes and everywhere. Find her on @priscillarenea. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

A Work of Art Furniture Inspired by Natural Resources

C

orporate America is a revved-up machine and I was a functioning cog working a truly mind numbing 9 to 5. Thousands of clicks, 200-450 forms a day. Just enough time to eat lunch at my desk. It took me about a month before I could do my job better than most everyone who had already been there for years. It wasn’t long before they told me to my face that while I outperformed my peers, they would promote them over me so they could keep me around. My brain had officially switched off for the eight hours of my life I spent at work. I started making custom jewelry and motorcycles as a creative outlet. I enjoyed using my hands and instead of having nothing to show after a day of work, my friends and family would often enjoy the custom gifts I’d make them. Jewelry and motorcycles taught me new skills in soldering, welding, electrical, design, and precision work. It became the release I looked forward to at the end of every work day. After four years of shuffling to work alongside the masses, I finally made the decision to see if I could make my custom work into a career. I wake up every morning and work for myself doing a variety of things that I’ve come to love and absolutely obsess over. I’m the founder, CEO, engineer, paint tech, and garbage man of Bryan Lewis Customs, and I make custom EVERYTHING. The thing I love most about my work is the challenge to make exactly what people have dreamed up come to life. The freedom of designing with the client and creating a one-of-a-kind piece is something I’m truly passionate about. My clients come to me with pictures, often grabbed from Instagram, or a friend, or a piece they like but would only work if it was tweaked or adjusted to fit their space. Projects have varied from massive conference tables and unique home décor, to industrial cornhole boards and bookends. It’s genuinely fun to work with them to bring that dream to life through a variety of mediums. We’re currently based out of Salt Lake City, Utah where the inspiration for furniture made from natural resources is abundant, however, the goal is to move to Vero Beach to be closer to family. At Bryan Lewis Customs, we use everything from steel, epoxy and concrete, to 100-year-old locally sourced urban walnut or whatever you can imagine to achieve our clients’ vision. We routinely work with interior designers who want to give their clients something that was made by one person’s blood sweat and tears as opposed to an assembly line piece. Recently, we caught the eye of Park City Art Gallery and have begun designing steel pedestals to showcase incredible works of art, sculptures and rare 50-million-year-old fossils. My favorite dental lab now has their meetings around two enormous 16-foot conference tables. There’s no project too big or small to turn into something personal and custom. Starting your own business is difficult. Being a first-time entrepreneur is a constant barrage of learning new techniques and solving problems. However, 70

March-April 2019

when I get to deliver a gorgeous custom piece that accentuates the lumber that came from that family’s backyard, or I get to incorporate some special message or meaning that has the capacity to bring a loved one to tears, that feeling is worth every struggle and unexpected turn in my custom road. The rush I get from peering over the cliff of client satisfaction after working countless hours with the hope that they’ll like it is so intimidating at times. When client expectations are met or exceeded, regardless of price or importance, that feeling is truly quite difficult to beat. I go to bed beyond exhausted but wake up excited every single day to make meaningful, lasting pieces that are truly custom. Learn more at BryanLewisCustoms.com.

Elevate Your Tailgating Style with FratWood

F

ratWood began building custom tables for fraternities in 2017. What originally started as a few fraternity brothers building tables in a sketchy garage quickly turned into something so much more. Our first order was to a fraternity at the University of Indiana, and after a small hiccup with the drug dealing neighbors, freight fraud, and a police escort to our garage, the tables made it safe and sound to Indiana and FratWood was born. FratWood was a good idea, even Billy McFarland agreed. After pitching FratWood to Billy, he offered us a jaw-dropping amount of money to make FratWood the biggest fraternity table and beer dye company the United States had ever seen. One month later, after several insufficient wire transfers, Fyre Festival blew up and Billy was arrested. FratWood lived on. Now, FratWood is the leading wooden tailgating table company. FratWood builds luxury wooden tailgating tables for the men and women who want to make a statement with their wood, not with plastic. Our mission is to fight imported plastic by bringing American wood to tailgates. We knew this wouldn’t be possible with a poorly made table…so we teamed up with one of the top woodworkers in Oregon and designed a beautiful, unique, foldable and transportable wooden table. Right now, we offer the House Table, a big, durable, and sturdy 8’ by 4’ foldable, wooden table. We are launching the Tailgater in March, a smaller, thinner, lighter, 5’ by 2’ foldable, wooden table. Be proud of what you’re part of and represent it right. Life is short, might as well show off your wood. LONG LIVE THE FRATWOOD.

Which White is Right

W

hite: in interior design it’s often called the “ultimate neutral,” but it can also be the ultimate pain when it comes to selecting the right shade. Anyone who has ever tried to pick a white paint color and ended up wanting to bludgeon themselves with a paint deck knows this pain. White walls give us the light and airy Florida feel that we’ve come to love here in Vero Beach. White makes a room feel larger and look brighter. However, because each white can have its own subtle hue, it can be challenging to pick the “right” white. The easiest way to spot the subtle undertones in a white paint sample—and also a great party trick—is to hold it up next to a solid white piece of paper. You’ll be amazed how quickly the distinctive undertones pop out. It’s also important to hold the sample up to the different fabrics or finishes that you have in the room and see how the colors affect one another. And of course, don’t forget to look at your choice in a large swatch (the bigger the better) during different times of the day. I recommend viewing it in late morning, midafternoon, and under artificial light at nighttime.

If you want a creamier color to accent rooms using red, orange or taupe, try using a warmer toned white. A couple favorites are Benjamin Moore’s “White Dove” or Sherwin William’s “Aesthetic White,” For a cooler toned white, try Benjamin Moore’s “Paper White” or Sherwin William’s “Eider White.” Use these colors when you want a white that leans more toward cool blue or grey to accent similar colors. For a simple, bright white that contains fewer subtle undertones try Benjamin Moore’s “Decorators White” or Sherwin Williams “High Reflective White.” These are especially nice when used on trim with the previously mentioned warm or cool whites on the walls. While it might take some perseverance and patience to pick the right white for you, I believe that having a white interior can give you a great blank canvas to build a beautiful room.

Off the Court and On the Record with Mardy Fish Experience and the ability to coach will be a valuable resource to the U.S. team. You refer to yourself as a players captain. What do you mean by that? MF: I definitely will run my captaincy as a players captain. I remember how it was when I played. Everyone is different. Everyone prepares differently. Being able to adapt to situations and individual players is very important to me. You succeed Jim Courier, who held this position for eight years. Did he give you any advice yet? MF: I will seek out tons of advice from Jim. He is an invaluable asset to me and the team. He was an amazing captain to play for.

Tom Fish, Ricardo Rodriguez, Sally Fish, Juan Benitez and Randy Walker.

A

t 37 years old, Mardy Fish has had quite a life. With a professional career spanning 15 years, winner of six ATP singles titles, eight doubles titles, and a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics, the former world No. 7 and Vero Beach native has always made his hometown proud. Mardy, who also happens to be a pretty darn good golfer (google it!), now holds one of the most prestigious positions in tennis. Earlier this year, the U.S. Tennis Association named Mardy the new Davis Cup captain. Portfolio spoke with Mardy about this illustrious honor. First, congrats! Describe your reaction when you heard the news? MF: Being the Davis Cup captain has always been an absolute dream job. It’s an incredible honor to represent your country and to do it as the captain? I can’t wait to get started.

There have only been 41 captains in 120 years. Where does this honor rank in your tennis career? MF: It’s different than anything I’ve done before. It’s different than my playing career in almost every way. When playing, you are so selfish. You have to be. It’s all about you and there is no one there to help you out on the court. In this role, it is the exact opposite. It’s all about the players and keeping all the different personalities happy and healthy. In the press conference announcing your new role, you mentioned this was a decision supported by the players themselves. That must have meant a great deal to you. MF: It meant the world that I had the support of the players. As a player, if you don’t have the kind of captain you want to play for, it’s a major difference. You competed in the Davis Cup from 2002 to ’12. As a Davis Cup veteran, how does that experience influence your coaching style for this team? MF: I’m excited to be on the court with the guys in competition. I will be able to lean on my own personal experience playing in those same situations and relay that to the team.

Part of your job is to work closely with the U.S. Tennis Association’s player development program. Explain that? MF: I’m excited to play a role as a tennis ambassador for the USA as well as lead the guys in the Davis Cup. Growing the game is so important. You want to leave it in a better place than when you got there. Finally, your annual tournament and fundraiser is coming up! MF: Yes! My foundation is a huge part of my family’s life. My mom and dad put in so much to this foundation. To be able to give back to the community that gave so much to us when I grew up is amazing. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the 2019 Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation Tennis Championship. This international minor-league professional tennis tournament featuring world-ranking pros takes place at the Boulevard Tennis Club. This event has been played in Vero Beach since 1995 and is regarded as one of the best entry-level professional tennis events in the world. Food for Thought C

helsea’s Gourmet provides great value for customers and so much more. When entering Chelsea’s Gourmet, customers receive a dose of health and happiness through our delicious sandwiches, amazing juices, and fan favorite salad bar, not to mention a plethora of other options. However, did you know Chelsea’s Gourmet uses the proceeds to constantly improve the lives of others? It starts with compensating employees above the competition, reinvesting the profits into the business to improve customer value, and donating to charities that support education in places ranging from India to Thailand. And yes, we partner with and sponsor a number of local charities as well. In the past we’ve worked with the Cultural Council, Humane Society, Riverside Theatre, Healthy Start Coalition, Indian River Land Trust, Hibiscus Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity and more. Why do we do all this? Well, our mission is to serve health and happiness. In that sense, we are mission driven. Our bottom line is a measure, not a goal. We see service as a way to give back and an opportunity to achieve real goals, like providing scholarships for girls in rural India or providing lunch for migrants in Thailand, neither of which might be provided otherwise. Health is an integral part of being able to provide service, for someone first needs 84

to provide for and strengthen their own mind, body and spirit to be able to serve and help others. And happiness is not only crucial for health, but is a goal worth pursuing in its own right, at least according to John Stuart Mill. The children I met in Mae Sot Thailand had been through quite a bit. They were poor beyond what the average American can imagine. They had fled an oppressive regime that often persecuted them for their identity, whether ethnic or religious. They built their own homes and a school with the little resources they could find. Their parents toiled away in factories for the majority of the day, sometimes not allowed to leave and without compensation. And yet, the children were happy. They had a school they could go to where smart and selfless adults were fighting for their right to have an opportunity for a better future. Next time you shop at Chelsea’s, look at the person across the counter and know that you are helping that person achieve a better future. Know that your small investment in your own health and happiness is also touching the life of someone on the other side of the world. And enjoy the sweet and savory taste of progress. To learn more, visit ChelseasGourmet.com or stop by the store and ask to join the Food for Thought campaign.

it’s a dog’s life

What People Food Is Safe To Feed Your Dog? When at the dinner table or enjoying a snack, you might find it hard to ignore those cute little puppy dog eyes begging for a bite. While many types of human foods may seem harmless, some foods can cause physical, behavioral and social problems in the long run. quinoa’s healing properties protect your dog from heart disease, cancer and other ailments.

Liver - Liver is the most beneficial type of meat you can feed your dog. In fact, it contains 10 to 100 times more vitamin A and B, iron, protein, CoQ10 and other nutrients which are great for energy, the immune system and heart health.

Carrots - Carrots, both raw and cooked, are good people foods because they are high in vitamin A and beta-carotene yet low in calories and fats. In addition to benefiting your dog’s eyes and immune system, they also work wonders for keeping a dog’s stools regular.

Peanut Butter - Peanut butter is known for its high protein content, and contains vitamin B and E, niacin and healthy fats. Dogs love the taste, and it’s often made into treats or placed inside Kong toys.

Quinoa - Quinoa, often called a superfood, contains many nutrients not found in other foods. From thiamin and riboflavin to calcium and iron,

Ice Cream - You may be in the habit of giving your ice cream without realizing that it contains lactose, a dairy sugar. Most dogs are lactose intolerant so feeding them ice cream will likely cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Chocolate - Chocolate and other foods featuring caffeine contain toxic substances called methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, seizures and even death. The highest levels occur in dark chocolate and baking chocolate.

Macadamia Nuts - While cashews and peanuts tend to be okay, macadamia nuts are the most harmful to dogs. Their unknown mechanism of toxicity can cause your dog to vomit, become weak and feverish, and develop tremors.

Grapes - Grapes are one of those foods that you should never feed your dog. It’s unclear why, but they can lead to severe illness and kidney failure. Raisins are unsafe as well.

Popcorn - As a favorite snack of many households, you might wonder if popcorn is safe for dogs. Unsalted and unbuttered popcorn is a healthy source of fiber and minerals. Check for kernels to prevent choking. Apples - Dogs like to eat apple slices as a treat. Apples contain vitamin K and C, calcium and fiber, which can help with hip dysplasia, heart problems and skin allergies. Bread - In general, plain or wheat bread is safe for dogs as long as they contain no nuts, seeds, garlic or raisins. Bread is lacking in nutritional value, but it can sometimes help if your dog has ingested a foreign object or has an upset stomach.

Avocados - Avocados tend to be more harmful to animals other than dogs because they contain persin. However, persin may cause your dog to have an upset stomach, or the pits could get stuck. Peaches - Although the fruity portions of peaches might not be harmful, the pits contain poisonous cyanide, which can cause many symptoms including abdominal pains, coma and cardiac arrest. Raw Eggs - Raw eggs are a common ingredient of raw diets for dogs because they contain high levels of protein, amino acids and fatty acids. Although some pet owners swear by raw diets, uncooked eggs are often contaminated with bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

While some foods are perfectly fine to feed your dog on occasion, others can make your dog deathly ill. If your dog has got its paws on food on the “do not eat” list, call your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away. 88

Enjoy the Great Outdoors with Your Dog

D

ogs, like people, need more time in nature. Sure, dogs were domesticated more than 15,000 years ago but only relatively recently did they begin spending the majority of their time indoors, breathing conditioned air and only going out to relieve themselves. This has given rise to an increase in pets of anxiety, boredom issues, obesity and diabetes. When your dog whines at the door, she’s trying to tell you something. She wants to get out! And perhaps she knows it will do you both some good! Dogs are family oriented and prefer to enjoy the outdoors together. Being outdoors is good for dogs and people. The sights, sounds and especially the smells (a dog can smell roughly a thousand times more than humans) stimulate your pet’s mind and body. Before getting out, you’ll need to prepare. A collar with an ID tag and phone number is vital. A microchip serves as a backup, especially if a collar is lost or torn. A leash, water and a small bowl are necessary. You’ll want to be current on your dog’s license, flea, tick and heartworm prevention. And don’t forget a handful of small bags so you can humble yourself before your pet. With that covered you can pick a variety of destinations. You’ll find almost instantly that you will meet interesting pet owners and your dog will meet other dogs. Socializing from a young age is one of the best things you can allow for your dog. I recommend to always use a leash.

The leash can be long to allow for freedom but important for safety. It’s a great idea to always have control over your pet, and to be courteous, always follow any laws, guidelines or etiquette. So where to go? A long walk through the neighborhood exploring new paths is a great start. Finding a dog park that suits you and your dog is also a great choice. Jungle Trail can be a quick getaway. Brevard and St. Lucie Counties have legal dog beaches. Dogs love the beach! Most love the water, too. I recommend a well-fitting flotation vest that you have tried out in a pool first. Make sure it aids in buoyancy and does not restrict mobility. In beautiful Vero Beach we have so many wonderful options to enjoy the outdoors…so get out there and explore together! Your dog will thank you and enjoy a long nap afterwards. A tired dog is a good dog! Written by KATTIS STENGARD Photography by PENNY TRANCHILLA

Financial Essentials Checklist for Your College-Bound Children Adjusting to college life can be stressful. Managing finances shouldn’t be. Consider the following tips, which can help your children manage their finances when leaving for college. Create a Budget - List monthly income sources such as savings, wages, scholarships, stipends, parental allowances and expenses to help your children keep track of their everyday cash flow.

Access to Cash - Consider adding your children as authorized users on your debit card or set up a joint account to help manage their spending. Encourage your children to use ATMs within your bank’s network to avoid ATM fees.

Establishing Credit & Begin Saving - If your children receive income, encourage them to deposit a small amount directly into their savings account. Consider adding your children as authorized cardholders on your account and set monthly spending limits. • Take advantage of online and mobile capabilities to manage their finances on the go, including person-to-person payments to transfer funds easily and quickly via the internet or a mobile phone. • Be financially organized by keeping all financial records, bills, and bank statements in one location. • Be aware of identity theft on college campuses – your children should keep their personal and financial information safe, be cautious about social media postings and password protect their electronic devices.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

WARNING FLAGS Water Closed to Public Agua Cerrada al Publico

REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings. Photo by Joel Roque

life in the stars

We start March enjoying a lot of planetary action for the Earth signs—it’s going to be important to be active, not to overthink things, and to be really ‘present’. There will be a desire to reconnect with nature, so take the time to get outside to breath in the fresh air and immerse yourself in the healing power of the sun, enjoy long walks along the beach—and ‘ground’ yourself. You will feel a need perhaps to change your diet, and manage your time more effectively. This is an ideal time to embrace healthier habits, and to release and let go of things that may have sapped your energy or dragged you down at the end of last year—these long overdue changes will make you feel lighter and more relaxed and create a wonderful sense of vitality as we head into Spring! This is a time of endings and beginnings, so there is a need to centre and ground yourself to deal with these intense changes. Some of you might be facing upheavals in your home life, some will be changing careers and some will be relocating! On March 7, Uranus will move into your second house which will activate your finances—there will be a desire to start home projects, change careers, and some will experience windfalls! On the April 5, the new moon in Aries brings a great energy for initiating anything new and a strong desire to be independent. This month, Jupiter and Saturn turns retrograde—retrogrades turn your attention to the past and also invite you to pay more attention to your inner voice, so, this can be the best time to make changes based on your deepest intuition.

At the beginning of March, you will be keen to embrace the new and unknown—you may find unexpected opportunities to lift yourself up and out of any routines that have left you feeling a little ‘flat’ over recent months. You might have an ‘Aha!’ moment where you find an exciting new hobby or consider picking up a past creative project you put on the back burner. You could also feel a need to expand your knowledge of healing, alternative forms of relaxation in the form of yoga, meditation or herbal remedies to renew the ‘inner you,’ so you are at your highest vibration spiritually and emotionally. By reaching a stillness and at this time, you will find creative solutions to remove any stagnant energy to make you feel more alive! Now is the time, Scorpio!

Uranus enters your sign on March 6 so it’s important you keep your feet on the ground and maintain your boundaries at this time to ensure that outside influences do not cause any undue confusion or disruption in your day-to-day life. Uranus in Taurus can be very stubborn. When this tendency is applied to accomplishing a difficult task, all goes well. Take time to find stillness within the chaos, which will help you navigate any external changes. Uranus may also bring forth an ‘awakening’—it can cause intense emotions— but if you can welcome these fluctuations and flow with the energies, this can be a very rejuvenating time for you!

You might be in a ‘woulda, coulda, shoulda’ frame of mind coming into March, but now is the time to put anything that you felt was holding you back in the past and use your fire energy to move forward! You could find that you receive an unexpected boost to your finances and you will feel more cerebrally expansive. With these two factors, you will have the drive to find innovative ways to move ahead. On April 10, Jupiter goes retrograde in your sign and you might feel you need to slow down—sometimes, too much enthusiasm can be disruptive, so be careful of making any impulsive decisions at this time. Uranus in your sixth house of can be a challenging energy, but you are THE sign that has the ability to use that energy to form new fulfilling and inspiring ways to bring you far greater fulfilment.

Many of the outer planets are in earth signs at this time, bringing changes in all areas of life. The key to making the most of these fluctuations is to give yourself a reality check so you can remain strong and authentic both for yourself and for others. On March 31, Mars enters your sign—your interests will become more diversified and you will adapt effectively to change. Uranus in your twelfth house will bring opportunities to release past issues, to clear out stagnant energy via deep thought and evaluation— a time to appreciate the progress you have made since the latter part of last year. What are your dreams and ambitions Gemini? Now is a time to ‘go with the flow.’ You are good at that, so you will find security and stability in your ability to navigate any changes through remaining flexible to allow yourself to swim with the tide rather than against it during the intense planetary changes we are experiencing via the eclipses. Uranus moves into your eleventh house in March, which will be a time to renew your social circle, and to work with others in community projects—to allow you to share your gifts to the world. If you can step out of your comfort zone to become more proactive and social, this fresh energy will bring magical new partnerships into your life, so don’t crawl into your shell Cancer, dip your toe in the water to experience new things! What are your deepest ambitions and desires Leo? You can create tangible long-lasting results at this time. Keep your feet on the ground but allow yourself to prepare for ‘the new!’ There might be significant inroads into expanding your career and building your financial stability. Get ready for changes that will allow you to push forward into the spring, feeling strong and powerful! In terms of your health, being a fixed sign it would be of great benefit to allow changes in your diet—isten to the rhythms of your body—try to get out as much as you can at this time and to eliminate anything that seems to sap your energy, which will not only revitalise you, but will also motivate you in other areas of your life…get your fire going again Leo! Given that you are ruled by Mercury, you will be in a contemplative phase at this time as we go through planetary shifts that began in January. However, with your fifth and eleventh houses activated, creativity will play an important role. Enjoy time with your children or your significant other, allow yourself to be playful in April—this will also help you feel more relaxed and youthful! You might be teaching, painting, gardening, writing—sharing your talents with the world. Your emotions will come to the surface at this time, too, and you will feel closer to your nearest and dearest…a wonderful time for connecting with others and for bringing out your romantic side! You may feel restless at this time—but this will be intensely positive energy that will enable you to really delve deep and look at what you might need to change at this time. Some may desire to travel, some may consider relocating, some will be taking on new projects to bring out their natural creativity. What makes you happy? What are your desires and goals? What new things do you want to learn? You are a ‘thinker,’ so coming into spring you will enjoy taking time to consider what you can bring into your life that can enrich your daily routine and expand your mind—that’s what you love most, right Libra!? Uranus will be activating your eighth house of finance, so this may be the ideal time to start a new business idea or to free yourself from a restrictive mind set to turn your dreams into reality!

March-April 2019

Over the next couple of months, your leadership qualities will be at the forefront, so you will find success in all areas, in particular, your career, business partnerships and finances. Your strong sense of ‘self ’—your self-confidence, maturity and ability to stay grounded—will find you highly sought after and respected! You might find that you experience a subconscious inner ‘uplift’ and feel more appreciated by others and looked up to by those you hold near and dear. This is also a time for you to find new ways of expressing yourself with strong mental clarity and resilience. On April 24, Pluto goes retrograde in your sign—accepting change is vital for your professional success. A deep inner transformation is necessary to find your place in society. On March 1, Venus enters your sign, so you start this month feeling close to your nearest and dearest and some will be keen to improve their love lives! You might experience some soul searching at this time, too. You could be looking at what makes you happy and what you may want to change. Surrender to what doesn’t work and clear out anything that is no longer fulfilling you to bring you more into alignment with your true life path or to make your dreams a reality! Uranus, moving into your fourth house of travel and movement could bring about a sudden need for a holiday, to spread your wings socially or even relocate! Your need for your freedom will be at the forefront at this time—a time to break out and to move into the new! Happy birthday, Pisces! March will be lucky for you and you’ll have all the time you need to dream and create. Mars will encourage you to take care of yourself physically and your love-life can anticipate a flamboyant return from Venus into your sign on March 26, so April promises to be sensual - hang on to your hat! The solar eclipse on April 8 makes you brave enough to go for gold in some capacity, either by purchase or investment. After April 20, writers, critics and journalists come into their own. Uranus has now reached the eighth and ninth degree of your sign, emphasizing adrenalin and restlessness, and the yearning for adventure in the souls of those born February 26 to March 1.
