editor’s note
Wow! Where does time go? As we say goodbye to 2013, it’s a time of excitement and celebration in our little town of Vero Beach. ‘Tis the season for music, art, opera, ballet and theatre! You’ll want to book your tickets to the cultural events early, or better yet, call the Cultural Council Concierge Service and let them do it for you! We love celebrating life at Portfolio! We’ve been members and community supporters of the Cultural Arts since our inception. We believe strongly in supporting LOCAL. Our publication is printed by Staples on 12th Street. We don’t sell our publication and we don’t sell subscriptions. It is a complimentary publication for you to enjoy, available at any of our local advertisers and so many other high-traffic locations. Portfolio is a very small local business and proud to be a part of this community. My favorite part of this issue was spending time at the Humane Society. I especially adored my new four-legged friend, Ramsey. At eight months old, he is very well behaved and excited to greet his visitors. Ramsey has been at the shelter for many months. I am shocked that he has not found his forever family yet. He has the sweetest disposition and will do anything for a treat! He’s a little gun shy at first but after a few minutes of poochie park playtime, you earn his trust. By the end of our play date, I was smothered in puppy kisses! (I truly felt bad for dog-cheating on my poodle, Max, but I am sure if he met Ramsey, he’d understand.) I hope all the holiday hounds find their forever families soon, especially Ramsey! We hope you have enjoyed each issue that we have published. We strive to think outside the box and uncover the uniqueness that makes this community a true treasure. Our mission is pretty simple – we hope to inspire you, your family and your friends to just get out and enjoy life. We are life inspired. I’d like to personally thank each and every one of you for helping us grow, for believing in my vision, and for becoming part of the Portfolio family. Wishing all of you many blessings and life celebrations as we close out 2013 and ring in a new year ahead.

Celebrate the Season
Who needs to go to Soho when you have such great culture in Vero? Indian River County is rich in arts and culture. This season has so many exciting events to choose from! As the season kicks off, it’s a time of celebrating with friends and family. We hope you have the best holiday season ever! The Cultural Council of Indian River County started a Cultural Concierge Service so that locals and visitors have a one-stop location to find out about art happenings in the county and local area. The service is not to replace organizations’ ticket outlets but to refer customers to them. If the customer wants the Cultural Concierge Service to purchase tickets they will, but only after the referral. This is meant to be an information service. Visitors to the area can call or email to find out what is going on in a particular time span and, if need be, get tickets. For more information visit www.cultural-concierge.org, email concierge@cultural-council.org or call (772) 770-4857. Cultural Council of Indian River County is located in the Historic Downtown Arts District at 2041 14th Avenue, Vero Beach.

Vero Beach Museum of Art “Something For Everyone” Residents and visitors alike will agree that the Museum’s art exhibitions alone are well worth the trip to the Treasure Coast’s favorite art institution. But wait, there’s so much more to see and do there! The Museum’s Concerts in the Park kicked off with Latin jazz by the Don Soledad Group in October in the Beckwith Sculpture Park; followed by jazz classics from the James Archer Quartet on Thursday, December 12, indoors in the Buck Atrium; and many more concerts to come! Families, “mark your calendar” for Holidays at the Museum on Sunday, December 8 from 1–4pm. This free-admission event features art, entertainment, refreshments, activities, and of course, Santa as a gift to Treasure Coast families. Do you love antiques? The Museum presents its 22nd Annual Antiques Show and Sale from Friday to Sunday, January 10 to 12, 2014. Considered one of Florida’s most esteemed expositions of antiques, the show has a long-standing reputation for quality and variety that attracts antique-lovers and collectors statewide. The Museum Café/Catering by Adrienne Drew found in the Museum’s Atrium reopened in early October for the season. This heavenly “best kept secret” is open from 11am –2:30pm from Monday through Saturday. Chef Drew provides hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, specialties, and sweets, plus a large array of hot and cold beverages in a bright and friendly atmosphere. Riverside Theatre
T
“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
Celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season, Riverside Theatre is the largest professional theatre in a small town in America! Originally built in 1973 on a 54-acre tract of land, designated by the city of Vero Beach as a cultural park, Riverside Theatre was erected with funds solely raised from private donations. For the first few years of its existence, it served primarily as a venue for local theatre groups, traveling productions, and celebrity performances. Seven years later, education and programming for children with Riverside Children’s Theatre was added. The most pivotal moment in the history of the Theatre took place in 1983 when the Theatre’s board created and set in motion a plan to make Riverside a producing, professional theatre. Riverside Theatre produces Broadway musicals, contemporary plays, and children’s theatre on three stages. In 2006, Riverside went through a major renovation with the reconfiguration of seating for the Stark Stage, the addition of the Waxlax Stage, and an expansion of the lobby. With over 100,000 patrons and students from the Treasure and Space Coast using the facilities annually, Riverside Theatre’s 40th Anniversary will be a grand celebration with the productions of Miss Saigon, South Pacific, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, God of Carnage, and Closer Than Ever. For more information, call (772) 231-6990 or visit www.riversidetheatre.com.
Theatre-Go-Round Dinner Theatre Theatre-Go-Round of Vero Beach is indeed what their name implies! This professional entertainment company travels around presenting dinner theatre productions at various restaurants along the Treasure Coast. They are known for their presentational style. Performing around each and every table within a dining room, they literally eliminate the need for a stage. Everyone has an intimate, front row seat where the stars serenade patrons up close and personal. Looking for something to do on Sundays? This traveling troupe performs this season at 14th Street Steakhouse and the Quilted Giraffe. Be sure and visit their website for a list of shows and dates. Visit www.theatregorounddinnertheatre.com or call (772) 252-9341, to book your reservation. www.portfolio-verobeach.com November-December 2013 17

Home for the Holiday Hounds These adorable hounds want nothing more than to spend the holidays and their lives with you and your family! If you are considering a new family pet, please stop by and visit the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County before shopping for a puppy. There is a stigma surrounding rescue dogs; that they’re untrainable, unpredictable or broken in some way. One visit to the Humane Society will dispel any doubts you’ve had about rescue dogs. These dogs are survivors. They are eager for a leader and a friend, making them easier to train than many think. They are the ultimate forgivers, lovers, companions and pets. The love in a rescue dog’s heart will warm yours forever. We’re lucky in Vero Beach to have such an amazing facility, where the wonderful volunteers and staff that work there are truly dedicated to adoring, training and most of all, finding a forever home for all of these homeless animals. Don’t shop, adopt!

T
he team of board certified physicians at New Vision Eye Center continues to dedicate themselves to offering the latest technology to our community. Dr. Minotty explains, “The laser for cataract surgery offers predictable outcomes while affording a comfortable experience to the patient; it is a true step forward in the realm of cataract surgery. The laser pre-softens the cataract, allowing surgeons to decrease the use of ultrasound energy to remove the cataract. Astigmatism correction
can be done simultaneously during cataract surgery using the LenSx laser system, reducing the need for glasses.” Dr. Stephen Tate says, “Laser enhanced cataract surgery with astigmatism correction is a gentle, precise and highly customizable procedure. We have had the system in place for over a year now and have been more than pleased with the results.” According to Dr. Stephen Tate, Drs. Minotty and Tate conducted extensive investigation into the lasers available and selected the LenSx for its performance and precision. Together with Dr. Roger J. Meyer, Dr. David J. O’Brien, and Dr. Paul L. Winslow, Drs. Minotty and Tate provide a wide range of comprehensive eye care in a state-of-the-art facility, just across from Indian River Medical Center. Simple Techniques for Surviving the Holidays
Rich sugar-filled foods, Christmas music in every store, and clogged roads with drivers who simply will not get out of the way… the Holidays are here! Although this time of year is about sharing the love and spreading merriment, it can still be alarmingly stressful. The to-do list becomes overwhelming with trips to the market, baking treats, wrapping gifts, and holiday parties, while the days become shorter and shorter. Time becomes the enemy and the amount of pressure we bring on ourselves can weigh heavy. The good news is there are several easy techniques we can utilize to help remain calm and grounded during the hectic holiday season. • Take a deep breath. Elevated levels of stress and frustration cause the body to tighten and constrict. Taking a few deep breaths instantly alleviates tension by relaxing vital organs and major muscle systems. • Stop and smell the season. Using the olfactory sense can help restore emotional well-being. Various scents such as vanilla, cinnamon, and citrus have proven to calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety. Try combining a quartered orange, three cinnamon sticks and a tablespoon of vanilla extract in a saucepan and set to simmer. It will fill your home with a soothing, yet festive aroma! • Soak up the sun. One of the many perks of living in Florida is the luxury of being able to enjoy the cooler weather months, while being in the sunshine. Research suggests spending 20 minutes a day outdoors, without sunscreen, to support healthier levels of vitamin D. • Express gratitude. A simple “Thank You” can be contagious and it’s something everyone can benefit from. Whether you are thanking others or receiving thanks, appreciation and gratitude improve mental alertness and overall physical health. Gratitude demonstrates positivity in humanity and restores our emotional balance. • Experience the art of acupuncture. This traditional form of Chinese Medicine stimulates a release of the body’s own feel-good endorphins. Once the serotonin and dopamine levels are elevated, the mind and body reach a state of relaxation and contentment. For more information on surviving this holiday season with natural techniques, please call our office at (772) 564-8383 for a complimentary consultation.

Hunger is Not A Game Please remember those less fortunate this holiday season.
Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen first opened its doors on April 15, 1988. Indian River County’s first soup kitchen, it was founded by J. Ralph Lundy, who served as its president since its inception until his passing in February 2009. The soup kitchen held its first lunch in the dining room of the Mt. Zion AME Church, where it remains today, serving hot nutritious meals from 12-1 p.m. to more than 300 people 5 days a week and delivering more than 150 meals to the homebound 3 days a week. Special holiday events for Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving are held for the elderly and needy families that include a hot dinner, clothing, fruits, gifts and toys. April 2013 marked the 25th Anniversary of Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen. Located in Gifford, the soup kitchen has been able to carry out its mission without financial assistance or grants from governmental agencies. Explains Lydia Forbes, President, “The strictly volunteer organization, relies solely on the support of local friends, churches organizations, schools, businesses and concerned individuals. We strive to uphold our founder’s mission: ‘To openly display the basic Christian principles by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and providing comfort to those who cannot be self-sufficient.’ Each meal begins with a prayer of thanks, profanity is forbidden and polite and proper manners are expected.” In celebration of this momentous occasion, we are commencing a community-wide fundraising initiative. With your help, we can have more meals and less hunger. For every donation of $20.00 or more you will receive a special limited edition pop-art poster created especially for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen by nationally acclaimed, award-winning, editorial cartoonist, James Casciari. Donations for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen will be accepted in person or via snail mail, at Frosting, 2915 Cardinal Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32963. Every dollar received provides a full nutritional hot lunch to someone in need right here in Vero Beach. Help us feed the hungry here. 100% of all funds collected will go directly to Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen. You can also “leave the change” for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen in the “spare change soup cans” at various area locations. Thank you for supporting hunger right here in Indian River County. Please make checks out to Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church for Our Father’s Table Soup Kitchen. From Italy with Love for Wine
L
ee Venturini Del Greco has been a resident of Vero Beach since 2003, after coming to visit a long-time friend and falling literally in love with the area. Her and her husband Guido reside in the Moorings and divide their time between Italy and Florida. Lee and Guido own and manage the Estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi, which dates back to the 15th century. It is here that their story begins. The Estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi lies between the towns of Buonconvento, Montalcino and Murlo in the region of Tuscany, in the Orcia Valley area of this province. It encompasses over 600 acres. Many illustrious Italian families owned the estate such as the Guglieschi, the Borghese, and the Tancredi families, from whom the property was named after, Cardinal Tancredi, prior to the acquisition of the estate by the Venturini Del Greco family approximately five generations ago. Their priority has always been to maintain the flavor and tradition of the estate while making modern improvements as necessary. The estate has 8-acres of specialized vineyards which are made up of various grapes and autochthonous clones such as Sangiovese, Foglia Tonda, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon which represent the international grape varieties. The entire production
38 November-December 2013
is harvested and prepared for the wine making process which is undertaken on-site in the enchanting, antique wine cellar. This is also where the DOC Orcia wines are created. The estate production is very limited and each yearly harvest depends on the climatic circumstances. They determine the choice whether to vinify and the quantities to produce. Excellent years such as 2006 and 2010 yielded a maximum of 20,000 bottles while for the other years, either a very limited cru was vinified or the grapes were harvested and sold to the neighboring consortium of Montalcino. A fine selection of these limited production wines of the estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi is imported locally since 2012. The Assedio (a sangiovese and merlot blend) and the Ambasciatore (syrah and cabernet sauvignon blend) are available at the following local establishments: Cork & Tapas,The Moorings Club, Chelsea’s on Cardinal, Joey’s Seafood, Johnny D’s and Osceola Bistro. Please make sure you visit these great locations to try a glass today!

Military Moms Prayer Group
P
auline Adams is a woman on a mission—a military mission. Her dream is to make sure that U.S. troops deployed around the world have a holiday to remember. That’s why she has teamed up with the Military Moms Prayer Group, a local nonprofit organization that supports the troops through prayer and annual gift box drives for the holidays. Through the group’s efforts last year, an estimated 2,500 gift boxes were shipped to U.S. servicemen and women. This year the group expects to do even more: 3,000 gift boxes are slated to reach our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen. Over the last two years, Pauline, owner of I’ll Never Tell jewelry at 3351 Ocean Drive in Vero Beach, has raised $20,000 for the Military Moms Prayer Group through the sale of heart-shaped “Braveheart Pins.” The pins, which are encrusted with red-white-and-blue crystal, sell for $12, with all proceeds benefiting the work of the prayer group. Pauline has come up with another gift idea to benefit the prayer group’s outreach to the troops: two hand-painted ornaments, emblazoned with flags, Swarovski crystal, and patriotic messages. One is inscribed, “Home of the Free because of the Brave.” The other proclaims a promise from the Psalms: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12) The ornaments, which sell for $25 to benefit the prayer group, come with a special heart-shaped stand. They can be displayed year-round. 40 November-December 2013
“The ornaments are another way of communicating the message that we’re not going to forget our soldiers,” says Pauline, the wife of a Vietnam veteran and mother of two sons, one of whom served in the Navy and the other in the Marines. As for the verse from Psalm 33, she adds, “That verse perfectly sums up the spirit of the Military Moms Prayer Group: every week they pray for safety and blessings for our troops and our country. No matter what our faith, each of us can relate to that.” Ultimately, says Pauline, we each know in our hearts that we continue to have our freedom because of the sacrifices of our sons and daughters in uniform. “We can’t support them without the support of the community,” says Pauline. “I’ve found that people care deeply and are looking for a way to reach out to the troops. These ornaments and pins are a simple way to say thank you to our courageous servicemen and women—the true ‘brave hearts’ who keep our country safe.” For more information, call Pauline at (772) 231-1148 or contact the Military Moms Prayer Group at (772) 231-2221. www.militarymomsprayergroup.com The interdenominational group meets from 5-6 pm Thursdays at Christ Church (next door to Vero Bowl and behind Outback). www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Star Gazing
With Lucky Stars Astrology
M
ost people know me as a children’s book author and illustrator. A side passion of mine, for over 30 years, has been the study of astrology. Astrology has been around for centuries. It is the ancient science of interpreting what influence the movement of the planets and stars may have on our lives. Each person has a zodiac based on the day and time they were born. An astrology chart is a navigational map, similar to the owner’s manual in the glove compartment of your car. This map can tell you the best way to operate your vehicle, but you have the key and you are the driver. In the same way, an astrologer can’t tell a person exactly what will happen. However, an astrological reading will describe what influences you will be under and send you on your way for a smoother journey. You are always in the driver’s seat and you control the direction of your life. When I was 18 years old, an astrologer saved my life. I felt like she understood my soul. She told me I was creative, yet at the time, I was doing nothing creative at all. She gave me insight on the best way for me to live a passionate and authentic life. Because of her intuition, I immediately began to pursue a career as a writer and artist. I have tried to follow her advice while living my life, which has brought me many blessings. The moon has a gravitational pull so strong that it affects the low and high tides in the oceans. Our bodies are 80% water, so doesn’t it make sense that the moon would have an effect on us too? It does! For example, we all know that hospitals and police stations are more active during full moons. All the planets also have an influence on us. “As above, so below” is very true. I have been a professional astrologer for over a decade with clients all over the world. I have taught astrology at Rancho La Puerta, the number-one spa destination in the world, and at various international astrology conferences. Starting in the January/February issue of Portfolio, I will be writing an astrology column each issue, which will describe the astrological weather patterns that are coming up for the 12 zodiac signs. Of course, this is just to entertain you and give you some general, helpful insight as to what may be influencing your sun sign at the time. Please note that only a full analysis of your chart privately will reveal the accuracy and scientific truthfulness of astrology. Feel free to contact me if you would like to schedule a consultation. S
Simply Beautiful Brides Grooms Optional Simply Beautiful Photo Sessions are a lovely blend of fashion and fine art. They are an opportunity for the bride to wear her dress again. Another day, another time, at a stunning location, she will wear her wedding gown again. This time, she may choose to express herself differently, create a new look. Grooms are always welcome to add a little sweetness and romance to the mix. The result: simply beautiful images. Brides can enjoy their wedding day knowing that their photographer is documenting it beautifully. She spends countless hours planning and preparing for the big day, down to the finest detail. The joy-filled wedding finally arrives. The photographer captures the story. As a final touch, Jill custom designs Bridal Albums and works with individual artists to create mixed media fine art prints that will be treasured for a lifetime. While based in Chicago for 10 years of Jill Douglas’ career, she photographed weddings for clients around the country. Since her arrival to Vero Beach 6 years ago, she has shifted to editorial fashion and advertising. “The greatest gift of being a photographer is that you can change your focus, move to a new subject, refocus and find great fulfillment along the way.” Whether photographing for a magazine or for an individual client, her photo sessions are well thought out and planned in advance to the finest detail-location, lighting, clothing, accessories, hair and makeup. The styling is what sets her apart. It’s similar to a bride planning the look for her wedding. “Simply Beautiful sessions allow me to capture their essence. I really believe that all women have this natural beauty. That is what I want to bring out in my images.” Jill Douglas Photography November 2013 - Launching “Vintage Style Vibe” www.jilldouglasphotography.com (772) 538-3492 Photo credit: Jill Douglas Model & Bride: Leah Smith Clothing: “Vintage Style Vibe” Collection 48 November-December 2013

Welcome to the Vero Beach City Marina, where we welcome all boaters; cruisers and long-terms, sail and power, accomplished and novice. Located on Florida’s picturesque Treasure Coast, the marina has been in operation since the early 1930’s. We offer wet slips, moorings, and indoor storage. We have accommodated vessels up to 135’ on our T-docks and dry storage is limited to 22’. We also offer gas and diesel, ice, waste pump-outs, Wi-Fi, showers and a laundromat. We are located in a beautiful park setting which includes three picnic pavilions with BBQ grills. A “run free” dog exercise area is adjacent to the southern end of our property. We are open 7 days a week, 362 days a year but closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
Blessing of the Fleet
The Vero Beach Yacht Club will conduct its annual Blessing of the Fleet for all boaters in Indian River and adjoining counties at 11:30 AM on Nov. 17th. Clergy representing various denominations will conduct the blessing. The procession and blessing are open to the public. For further information visit www.verobeachyachtclub.com. Let’s go boating!
Boating is fun for everyone!
As we ride the “end of the summer heat wave” back to the beach, we shift gears into a new season of boating. Perhaps we’re done making plans for Bahamas trips and long offshore runs, but that doesn’t mean we’ve slowed down a bit. In fact, now is the perfect time to get going and enjoy our time on the water in the Indian River Lagoon, our homeport. This time of year is the perfect time to plan a trip cruising either North or South on the Intracoastal Waterway or maybe through
Inshore fishing? We’ve got it! Family time on a “private island”...lets
the “Big Lake” to the West Coast Of Florida. The Vero Beach Grady
go! Cruising “the ditch” to a new locale…now’s the time! All of us here
Bunch has these plans on the agenda for the upcoming months. We’re
at Vero Marine Center are boaters and look forward to our time on the
fortunate to be on one of the prettiest parts of the lagoon with the
water. We enjoy what we do! Our family of friends, whether Grady Bunch
Ft. Pierce Inlet to the south and the Sebastian inlet to the North, and
members or the crew of a new SouthWind Deck Boat “get it”. They all
plenty of spoil islands to call your own in between. As the southbound
know that life is better on the water, and are happy to be away from land
migration of the “Northern Snowbird” begins, we’re happy to welcome
and the daily routine, enjoying all that Vero Beach has to offer!
back the folks that call Vero Beach their winter home. Winter indeed! Compared to most places north of Florida, we live in a boater’s paradise!
We’re happy to be who we are, where we are!

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach and find a trash can. Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean!
BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too.
into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
