Life is a gift.

Every day and every minute we should be thankful, celebrating. Growing old may not be an option. Cancer and disease are consuming us and every day it seems, someone we know and love is affected. We have to LIVE now. Don’t wait for tomorrow as for some, it never arrives. This issue we focused on music. Music soothes the soul. Music is a healer to some. Music is a gift. It poured out of these musicians like rain. It is beautiful. Depending on the genre, just listening to it will relieve stress, soothe your pain or make you forget your troubles. I cannot imagine life without music. I was extremely impressed with the passion evoked from each of the musicians I met doing this issue. I hope that all of you will open up your heart, dust off the piano or guitar and be inspired to play...or just listen to music. Our mission at Portfolio has always been to inspire you to live your life to the fullest... because life is simply better by the sea.

Teresa LoBianco, also known as Terri Kay, is an American singer and songwriter. At the age of 8, Terri realized while attempting to impersonate one of her many influences, R&B singer, Toni Braxton, that she wanted to be a singer when she grew up. Terri’s mother and father encouraged her to keep singing and even challenged her to sing along to songs by artists such as Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige, who also became vocal idols to Terri. As she grew older, Terri’s parents always encouraged her to enter talent contests, but she was always too shy. Even going out to karaoke as a teen with her parents was nerve wrecking for Terri. Toward the end of high school in 2007, Terri found herself watching music videos available on YouTube and noticed in the “suggested videos” section there were regular, non-celebrities covering popular songs. After watching a few hundred, she mustered up enough courage to record and upload a cover herself, covering “One and a Million” by late R&B artist, Aaliyah. In 2009, Terri entered and won pop singer, Paula DeAnda’s, MySpace Karaoke Contest. Originally, the prize was to meet and record with the artist, but she received a $2,500 check instead. This was a very big deal to Terri, to be chosen out of nearly a million people and it was just the boost of confidence she needed. She soon joined a local rock cover band, NAKEDGE (pronounced Naked Edge) and became the lead singer amongst four very talented and experienced musicians, who loved and treated her like family. Starting off stiff as a board and glued to the microphone stand during public performances, rock was an unfamiliar genre to Terri. But thanks to the support of her band mates, family, friends, and the energy of rock music, she eventually broke out of her shy shell and became more than just a voice. She became an entertainer. Nowadays, Terri continues to find time to keep up with her YouTube channel, where she now has over 100 cover songs uploaded. As far as her music career goes, she’s still working on being discovered, and you can find her either collaborating with other local artists, recording originals, auditioning for televised talent shows, or at gigs around town. “Music has always been a huge part of my life. I was 10 when I got my first guitar and instantly enjoyed singing, but I progressed slowly because I had other priorities. I started to write and record songs in high school. Now, I am working to promote my original music and strengthen my vocals.” Gunnar Flinchum

E Michael-jamar Jean Francois, 23 years old, has lived in Vero for 17 years. When he was 12 years old, he started singing with his church choir. Michael always would sing very softly and would never show his real voice until one day when he was about 14. Michael’s good friend told him that he had a great voice and that he should try for a solo part. So he mustered up all the confidence he had, tried out for a solo, and got it. Michael remembers the first day of practice; he froze and couldn’t remember a word of the song he was supposed to sing. He felt incredibily down but his friend, Robinson, told him that it was just the first step. And he was right. Michael has sung with admirable confidence ever since. “Now it’s hard to get me stop singing. Whether I’m at home, work, or on a stage, I always sing with my heart first and my lungs second. And for me, that’s always how it should be.” ~ Michael-Jamar Jean Francois

Josiah David Nalzaro, a local 19-year-old, has an amazing passion for music. Josiah grew up in a musical home; his parents are professional singers and his siblings sing and play instruments all day. When he was 6 years old, Josiah’s parents bought him a guitar and he’s been playing ever since. Taking lessons on and off, he struggled with the concept of theory, so he taught himself the patterns and played by ear. When Josiah was 11 years old, he started writing songs and take singing more seriously, when he wrote a “love song” for a girl he had a crush on. But the girls in his life weren’t the only things that inspired Josiah to write songs. His songs talk about life and finding hope when you’re in the deep end. He likes to sing from different points of view and put himself in someone else’s shoes, and write about how that person can find hope. “I believe all the songs that I write are a way for God to speak to me and remind me of His love and mercy. I give all the songwriting credits to God, because without Him, my songs would just be words on a paper and not mean anything to anyone.” ~ Josiah David Nalzaro

James “Robby” Staggs was introduced to playing music at the age of 14. After receiving his first guitar, Robby practiced for hours on a daily basis, teaching himself how to play along with popular artists he was into at the time. Time went by and Robby’s skills progressed, leading him to become involved with other musicians and music groups. When Robby began high school, he started taking music classes and eventually learned the fundamentals of drums and the piano. Robby’s music knowledge expanded and over time, he would be a part of several different bands. After playing various shows, benefits, and talent shows, Robby’s love for music grew even more. He knew that music would be a main aspect of his life, and would hopefully even be his career. Robby received a full music scholarship for college and although he has his associate’s degree, he is constantly learning more about music and his playing abilities are consistently progressing. After playing with about six different bands, things finally fell into place when Robby found himself playing guitar in a group called East Harbor. East Harbor is a variety band that covers music of all genres, and they write their own music. Robby’s music path is going better than ever before, and he looks forward to seeing where it leads him.

R David “Gonzo” Gonzales started playing guitar and writing music when he was just 11. At the time, he was heavily influenced by classic rock bands such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. As he got older, his musical tastes diversified and he began learning more instruments such as the piano, bass guitar, drums, and cello. When Gonzo moved to Florida in 2008, he formed a band named “Mattoid Droids,” a three-piece experimental band. This band became his main creative outlet; Gonzo wrote and produced four full albums for this band which you can find on Bandcamp. Florida would also be the place where Gonzo discovered jazz, which is distinct in his playing and songwriting. Gonzo mainly plays the keyboard in East Harbor, and occasionally provides rhythm guitar and back-up vocals for the band as well. He also plays guitar for the Carvajal Sisters and performs solo gigs. Although guitar is his strongest instrument, he considers himself a musician first and foremost, not a guitarist. Music is David’s one true passion and form of expression. When he’s writing lyrics to a song, improvising on his guitar, or experimenting with new sounds on a keyboard, he feels spiritually and mentally invigorated. He hopes to make a living out of music, as a touring musician, songwriter, studio musician, or all of the above. Currently, he is pursuing a music major in college. 16

The Carvajal Sisters, a sensational duo from Vero Beach, have been entertaining audiences locally for the past 10 years. Kacy plays acoustic guitar, piano and bass. After playing bass in the band “Mattoid Droids” with David Gonzales for about two years, she brings a chill vibe to the duo and has a darker, richer tone as an alto singer. Nancy is classically trained with a passion for performing. Nancy’s high energy and powerful, high range soprano voice rounds out the duo. Together, their different voices and vibes blend beautifully in harmony. The Carvajal Sisters’ family and Colombian heritage has been a huge influence to them since their first exposure to Latin music. Their musically talented parents always encouraged them in their pursuits, as well as their beloved harmonica-playing grandfather, who passed last year. Born and raised in Vero Beach, they have been involved in the performing arts throughout town for most of their lives. The sisters were both in choir in elementary school and throughout middle school, and were heavily involved at Riverside Theater. They attended Indian River Charter High School where they continued their involvement in the arts. Kacy was in jazz band for four years playing bass guitar and singing occasionally. Nancy was also in jazz band, singing and playing drums. With the jazz bands they gigged throughout town, they gained a lot of experience performing that has helped them to this day. Both were recipients of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society Scholarship. Today the sisters enjoy and perform a versatile range of musical genres, including jazz, classical, rock, funk, reggae, pop and folk acoustic. In January of this year, they started performing with a full band. With David “Gonzo” Gonzales on guitar, Brylon Terry and Nickolas Reed on drums, and Alex Campbell and Dylan Thomas playing bass, the band has seen a lot of success in continuing to bring fun and energetic music entertainment to the local community and elsewhere.

Cory Kouns is a 25-year-old musician and songwriter from Vero Beach. His first exposure to the art of music was in elementary school, and he continued his education throughout middle school where he learned the basics of music theory. Cory achieved his Associates in Arts with a focus in music, which led to a bachelor’s degree in psychology in order to understand music and the mind. With opportunities that have led to many inspiring music projects over the years, Cory has become proficient in percussion, bass guitar, electric/ acoustic guitar, keyboard, music production, songwriting and singing. He has toured with energetic, technical metal bands such as “History of Monsters” and “Still at Heart.” But now, Cory is writing, recording, and performing with an American Indie-Progressive-Rock band called “East Harbor.”

R The first exposure a person has to music is perhaps the most important in their entire musical history. This rings true for Josh Dobson as his first memories of music are back in his early childhood. Josh’s father would send him mixed tapes, complete with classic rock such as Led Zeppelin and Journey. This began his appreciation for technicality in music. These types of artists inspired Dobson to begin to learn the drums when he was 6 and soon after, the guitar when he was 7. Dobson never abandoned these early passions and continued through his teen years to learn and develop his own personal style. By dabbling in many genres such as, acoustic, rap, and electronic, Dobson also discovered a love for production. A large majority of his time was spent at the small studio setup in his bedroom. For hours at a time, he would work meticulously on a new project where every intricate detail of the music was examined and contemplated. While some may find this process tiresome or overwhelming, Dobson found it intriguing and went on to become well versed in many music production programs such as “Abelton Live.” Around this time, Dobson began playing music outside the comfort of his home studio; playing his guitar and singing for restaurants, clubs, and other establishments for small audiences. This evolved from playing a couple nights a month to a weekly paying job. He sings a variety of music, but presents every song with his own distinct sound. One can listen to his performances and guess at his musical past. It is light and acoustic from his 12 years of guitar playing, yet energetic and rhythmic inspired by his interest in rap and electronic. We can’t forget to mention the technicality behind every note played, no doubt influenced by his classic rock interest in his past. Dobson continues to entertain audiences with this original blend.

Richard Ducat is a 26-year-old man of many talents from Vero Beach. Growing up, he spent a lot of time listening to music but didn’t get his start playing drums until he was 17. In less than ten years, he was able to learn not only the technical knowledge of his instrument but also the industry that surrounds it. Since then, Richard has toured as a drum tech and photographer with national acts such as “Falling in Reverse,” “I See Stars,” “D.R.U.G.S.,” and “Verse Emerge.” He now plays with the local band “East Harbor.” After getting his bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Fullsail University and working a handful of national tours, Richard now resides in Vero Beach with his beautiful wife and son where they have a website and graphic design company. Although not on the road, Richard still keeps close connections in the industry, working daily with Indy labels and companies such as Sumerian Records, BANDHAPPY and Vans Warped Tour.

The Sound of Music With over 129 songs on iTunes, pianist/ singer/songwriter Lisa Addeo broke every record ever set at Radio City Music Hall playing alongside Liberace. Her passion for music was obvious at an early age as she started playing piano at age 6 and began performing at age 9. Originally, she was classically trained and eventually embraced the freedom in jazz improvising, songwriting, arranging and producing. She has played piano in movies with Lauren Bacall and Dan Aykroyd. She has also been seen in TV’s ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Ellen’, and has performed for royalty, celebrities, international dignitaries and Fortune 200/500 corporations across the US and Europe. Joe Caragol has performed with players from the Duke Ellington band and has played in gypsy jazz bands, rock bands in quartets, trios and duets. For the last decade he has played in Vero Beach restaurants and nightspots. Now 61, he grew up in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. Caragol fell in love with the barrier island on his first visit to Vero in the late 1990s, invited by a musician friend living on the ocean. Caragol designed his home – including the huge beamed guitar outlined on the ceiling, with the help of an architect. He had dabbled in architecture and drawing at a technical high school in Brooklyn. But his real passion in those days was music, ever since hearing a cousin in Barcelona play Brazilian jazz on the guitar in the mid-1960s. Soon after, he put together a band. Together, Lisa Addeo and Joe Caragol, have a dynamic mix of piano, guitar and vocals, delivering breathtaking interpretations of everything from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga. “It’s a delicate dance between two instruments that play more than one note. It’s very different than either one of us playing a duo with a sax or flute or bass player, who all play one note at a time, and the guitar or piano fills the rest. So with two chordal instruments, it takes a lot of good listening and good taste to pull it off so that both instruments project and shine and it doesn’t sound too busy,” Addeo says. Joe agrees and with deep mutual respect, the two eagerly dive into a discussion about great music to fulfill their vision for their duo. www.LisaMusic.com

The Killer Whale Band: A Local Band that Makes a Big Splash Local professionals by day, alternative music band by night. The Killer Whale Band members are Dr. Lee Legler an orthodontist with Legler Orthodontics and the band’s drummer. Drew Dunlap, owner of Dunlap Construction is the band’s lead guitarist. Hailing from Ireland, Dr. Greg O’Corry-Crowe, the lead singer, is a marine biologist for Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Pilot, Chase Gutierrez, brings the rhythm as the bass guitarist. Finally, Dr. Pete Gutierrez is a guitarist and dentist for Gutierrez Dentistry. Although the band members have known each other for years, their love of music is what brought this group together. Pete and Lee have been surfing and boating buddies for over 20 years, and often brought young Chase along. When Pete and Lee started playing music together, it was natural to ask now adult Chase to join the band. Drew, Greg and Lee’s young children attend school together, so when talk of forming a band began, it was a no-brainer to bring in musical dads, Drew and Greg. Drew brings the energy with his guitar skills, sense of humor and interesting musical taste (he can rap!), and the band found a real entertainer in lead singer Greg. As an ode to Greg’s profession as a marine biologist, the band decided on the name Killer Whale. That, and it sounded cool. The guys meet weekly to practice and try out new music to cover. Since they have “day jobs” they enjoy playing at parties and wherever they have fun. The band has played for groups from 20-200, and always has the audience dancing! www.portfolio-verobeach.com

take the time to learn what is copyrightable and the process for obtaining a copyright. It will speak volumes to a record label if aspiring artists are familiar with the legal side of the music business and have already safeguarded their original works. When performing covers and making music videos using covers, I cannot stress enough how vital it is that an aspiring artist seek the appropriate licensing. More times than not, YouTube is taking down videos for infringement violations, which can damage an aspiring artists’ reputation and marketing package. Q: What can an aspiring artist do to not make such a mistake? A: Register with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI). Industry groups like ASCAP and BMI are invaluable to aspiring artists, as so much can be learned through such memberships. Q: How can an aspiring artist be successful in the music business? A: There is no single rule that directly leads to success, but I have found that being commercially appealing to labels should never be underestimated. As I mentioned earlier, marketability is so important, and, in tandem with that, commercial acceptability plays a huge part. The music industry is very cyclical - what was once out of style, comes back up in popularity a decade later. An aspiring artist should know where we are in that cycle and then start packaging himself or herself to hit that next wave of commercial appeal, which record labels are already developing. Q: Is there one piece of advice that has not changed in the over fifteen years you have been in the entertainment industry? A: Yes, don’t give up!

So…you think you want to be a Rock Star? Portfolio Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with one of Vero’s newest businesses: The VLTRA Group, Inc., a television production, talent management, and integrated marketing company. VLTRA’s President and CEO, Erik Di Somma, gave us his top 5 tips for conquering the music industry! Q: What is one area that many aspiring artists fail to consider when trying to land a record deal? A: Making oneself marketable. Marketability is the business component of the music industry that any aspiring artist must take into consideration when trying to land a record deal. It is not enough to simply be talented in today’s music industry, an aspiring artist must be able to clearly and concisely express to a record label how his or her image will sell and turn a profit. By engaging in business strategy development early in one’s career, an aspiring artist will be taken much more seriously than the competition, thus increasing the chances of getting signed. Q: What is the #1 mistake up-and-coming artists consistently make? A: Failing to copyright their work. So often I meet aspiring artists who cover popular songs, upload music videos to YouTube of either covers or original music, and then post such work across multiple social media platforms. It is very rarely that I find any of the legally required copyright or licensing documentation has ever been filed to safely engage in that type of marketing. In the case of original work, it is so important that aspiring artists 22

President and CEO of The VLTRA Group, Erik Di Somma, was born and raised in Vero Beach. After attending Vero Beach High School, Erik went on to pursue a career in television across the country, most notably in New York and Atlanta. Erik served as head of marketing for The SUZANNE Show, hosted by Suzanne Somers, which was nominated for a daytime Emmy in 2012. Currently, Erik is producing VLTRA’s flagship production, Jetset, which is a modern day affluent lifestyle series focused on one-of-a-kind, dynamic experiences set in stunning locations with influential figures who live a lifestyle that even the elite wealthy have never before seen. Carly Barnes, VLTRA’s newest hire, was also born and raised in Vero Beach. Joy to the World

Photos by Jill Douglas

At the 6th Annual Mike Block String Camp, June 29th through July 10th in Vero Beach, Florida, a diverse array of students ranging from local Middle and High School students, to college professors and young professional musicians from around the globe, will all come together to learn new styles and expand their musical world. The world-class faculty (including multiple Grammy-Award Nominees) comes from a variety of backgrounds, including bluegrass, Celtic, Latin, jazz, rock, classical, world music, and singer-songwriters. During the program, faculty and students give public concerts as part of the Vero Beach International Music Festival. Mike considers this one of his favorite parts of the camp, where the campers can share their joy and creativity with the whole community. MBSC also has a student exchange program with a folk camp in Galicia, Spain, called the San Simon Fiddle Camp. Hailed by YO-YO MA as the “ideal musician of the 21st Century,” Mike Block is a pioneering multi-style cellist, composer, and educator living in Boston, acclaimed by The New York Times for his “vital rich-hued solo playing.” While still studying at the Juilliard School, Mike joined Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and shortly thereafter also joined Mark O’Connor’s Appalachia Waltz Trio, which he played in for over three years. Mike has also toured extensively with Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings and The Knights Orchestra. After becoming one of the first wave of cellists to adopt a strap in order to stand while playing, Mike was the first standing cellist to perform at Carnegie Hall, which the New York Times called “breathless…half dance, half dare.” In 2012, Mike was appointed Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music. In 2009, Block founded The Mike Block String Camp, which takes place in Vero Beach, Florida. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

“I love coming to Vero Beach. It’s really been the relationships with local teachers and families that have grown in the most meaningful way. And Jill Douglas always helping introduce us is just one of the great examples of that! This camp creates a unique community of people with different backgrounds but shared values.” Teachers provide instruction in multiple traditions, develop improvisational skills, and coach student bands in preparation for public performances. memory lane

ferdinand a. legido AKA Freddie Alonso

M

y father, Freddie Alonso, was an elegant man. Every night he would put on his tuxedo and go to work. I thought everyone did that because for as long as I can remember, that was his “uniform” of sorts. As I got older I realized that this was not the norm. Most mothers stayed at home and fathers left for work in the morning. My mother and father were both entertainers, they came home in the morning! Most of us didn’t really pay much attention to what our fathers did when they went to work but since I spent a good deal of time backstage waiting for my parents to finish rehearsals, I knew firsthand. Unfortunately, I did not appreciate how special he was until much later on in life. My father was an orchestra leader and played in all the top hotels in Miami Beach, Florida in the ‘40s and ‘50s such as the Lord Tarleton, the Ritz Plaza, and the Copacabana. We then moved to New York where he played the El Chico, the Lido, the Coral Reef Club and the Chateau Madrid. His crowning glory was the El Morocco in NYC for over 15 years and the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach when he moved back to Florida. I remember him telling me stories about the movie stars, celebrities and political figures that graced the dance floor, enjoying the Latin music for which he was so famous. My parents hung out with Lucy and Desi Arnaz (another Cuban-born musician), Tito Puente and Xavier Cugat along with his cute Chihuahua. The ‘50s were

24

a special time for Mambos, Rhumbas, Cha-chas and Tangos, and Fred and his Latin band played them all to the delight of everyone who heard him. Fred was classically trained. He played in Little Carnegie Hall as a child and attended Julliard. His mother’s dream was for him to become a concert pianist. But when his father died unexpectedly and the Great Depression hit, Fred went off as a teenager to play the speakeasies and earn a living. It wasn’t until my father and I moved to Vero in early 2000 that he went back to his love of classical music. We have a courtyard home, which is very characteristic of Spanish culture. Every day, Fred would practice classical music for three to four hours a day on his vintage Mason & Hamlin Baby Grand until he was in his ‘90s. Talk about the “sound of music”…it would fill the house and every inch of the courtyard. When we would have a dinner party, our guests would ask, “is Fred coming?” And of course, he was, and ready to play their favorite song from memory. Each year we would hold a fundraiser in our home called the Gift of Giving for the Benefit of the Homeless. Our guests would donate whatever they could afford and get to sit within an arm’s length of a magnificent pianist performing classical pieces just for them. Those were very special times. When Fred began to fail in health, he still managed to play his piano every day. When the visiting nurse would come into his cottage, he would play a song named after her. There was Louise, Mary and Irene – and, of course, Rosalie. If there wasn’t a song named after the nurse, he would play “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” Needless to say, Fred was very popular and to this day he is sorely missed. He brings to mind the lyrics of another famous song “but something touched me deep inside, the day the music died.” But the memories live on. By Rosalie Legido Hakker www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Music is Medicine M

usic speaks a language that words often cannot express. We’ve all had the experience where that one special song seems to convey everything our heart is feeling. From classical to pop, smooth jazz to classic rock, music can create ambiance, shift our current mood, and provide the backdrop for so many of life’s activities. Think of the relaxing tunes that help you unwind, or the lively, energetic tunes heard at sporting events to pump up the crowd, or the catchy, familiar tunes you blast to motivate your workout. Aside from invoking feelings of joy, heartache, nostalgia, or energy, music also affects our physical bodies. Scientific research has validated music’s therapeutic ability to lower blood pressure, lower cortisol, reduce anxiety, enhance concentration, stabilize heart rate, improve recovery after

stroke and improve immune function. Neuroscientist Dr. Daniel Levitin’s life’s work is music research. “We’ve found compelling evidence that musical interventions can play a health care role in settings ranging from operating rooms to family clinics,” said Dr. Levitin. “But even more importantly, we were able to document the neurochemical mechanisms by which music has an effect in four domains: management of mood, stress, immunity and as an aid to social bonding.” Ancient Chinese principles also espouse music as a healing art. The Chinese character for medicine is derived from the character for music. In a recent interview, Gao Yuan, Composer for the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra, illuminated the therapeutic role of music in his culture. “Our ancestors believed that music had the power to harmonize a person’s soul in ways that medicine could not. In ancient China, one of music’s earliest purposes was for healing. During the time of the Great Yellow Emperor (2698-2598 B.C.E.), people discovered the relationship between the pentatonic scale, the five elements, and the health of the five internal and five sensory organs. During Confucius’ time, scholars used music’s calming properties to improve and strengthen people’s character and conduct.” During an acupuncture treatment at our office, patients listen to relaxing music. Music transcends the Eastern and Western medical paradigms to enhance the restorative benefits of acupuncture and encourage the body to heal. Music is medicine…so turn on the tunes, and turn up your health!

Wellness

The Sound of

P

leasurable music and sound have been shown in many scientific studies to have a positive impact on many parameters of human health. Not only can it clearly affect our moods, but pleasurable music has been shown to have a direct influence on the endocrine, nervous and immune systems. What is so exciting about the recent revelations on the power of sound healing is that we now know that all types of cells of the body, theoretically, can respond to sound waves, not just auditory cells. Some believe, since our DNA is both a transmitter and receiver of sorts to various forms of energy, that our very DNA can be affected by receiving electronic and bio-acoustic vibrations through music and various tonal frequencies. An interesting way to try to illicit a favorable response in the body for wellness, anti-aging, and relaxation purposes, is by using music and binaural beats. Often referred to as “brainwave entrainment” this technology is easy for anyone to use; the only things required are a headset and binaural music. While wearing a headset, two different tones are played into each ear and the brain interprets the difference as a single beat. This beat is then thought to “sync” the brain to a specific brainwave to illicit a desired response. Pleasant music or nature sounds serve as the background delivery for these beats. People use this technology to increase relaxation, help with meditation, increase focus, decrease mild anxiety, support better immune function, lose weight and even turn back the clock through stimulation of the endocrine system. We have incorporated this easy-to-use technology for those interested, in some of our treatments at The Anti-Aging Boutique. It can be easily worked into a facial LED light treatment, our signature massage, or our favorite way to use it is during our LED RejuvaBed sessions. We believe it may very well become mainstream in the future as people seek non-pharmaceutical ways to alleviate stress and enhance a healthy lifestyle. Creative Cartooning for cake

rom the age of five, I knew that I wanted to be a cartoonist and work for Walt Disney when I grew up. Although the dream changed along the way, my passion for art grew steadily. As a child, I would paint with acrylics on small canvases, write short stories, and draw my own comics on lined paper. I’d try my hand at fashion design with the help of my pens and markers, or sew small decorative pieces from scraps found in my mother’s sewing kit. There were even instances in which I’d create board games for my mom and I to play that were cobbled together using cardboard and copious amounts of glue. Cut to the present, and everything I’ve done in my past has taken root as part of my current career. I paint realistic portraits digitally, I’m working on my own comics (both in webcomic and traditional paperback form), I’m an apparel designer and I create handmade crocheted crafts. I am also working as an independent game developer to build games from scratch. My motivation to make things when I was a child is maintained today as a genuine curiosity of whether or not I can. The question of whether or not I can has given me the opportunity to try my hand at trades that I never

36

would have considered previously, while simultaneously falling in love with them. Without that question however, I wouldn’t have the drive to push myself beyond each failure and treat it as yet another learning experience. I’m continually growing as an artist and feel an overwhelming sense of fulfillment when I complete a project that previously felt impossible. The causal link between every moment in which I felt my worst is bound to a moment in which I stopped creating. I’m fortunate enough to be excited about my work because the artistic possibilities of what I might find myself making next feels endless. I believe the curiosity and love of creation I had as a little girl helps to fuel the projects still ahead of me. Regardless of the artistic field I’m working within at any given time, my genuine hope is that I never stop asking whether or not I can. Shana-Lee Mowatt Illustrator of Art. Maker of Games. Vero Revisited

I

collect old postcards. The odder, the better. I must have over 2,000 cards. I make a living as a graphic designer. For over 30 years I worked in the Washington, D.C. area, spending most of my time working as Creative Director for several large advertising and public relations firms. The work was extremely fast-paced and I knew I was only as good as my last successful campaign. It was a little like the hit TV show, Mad Men, without all the shenanigans! After tiring of big city life, my wife and I moved to quiet Vero to be closer to family, play a little golf, soak up some sun and take time to smell the roses. Old postcards have always fascinated me. I’m often amused thinking about that flimsy little piece of paper traveling thousands of miles at times, and ending up at it’s intended destination. What are the odds of making that trip and arriving in one piece? The ‘journey’ has always intrigued me. It’s like finding a little treasure on the beach, maybe a sharks tooth, or a piece of a broken plate, or maybe even a gold coin. Where did they come from? What distance have they traveled? I’ve been collecting postcards since 1975. I stumbled upon a big find at a rural antique store one day, and the obsession was born. Flea markets are another great source for cards. I try to seek out remote stores throughout my travels. There are still old towns in Florida where shop ownership hasn’t changed hands in generations. Therein lies the goldmine, the mother lode. 38

November-December 2014

Imagine all the history collecting dust in those small places. I look for cards that have a slightly quirky look or something out of the ordinary. Many of the cards from the ‘40s and ‘50s were hand painted and are rather unique. I hope these images of old Vero bring back pleasant memories for the folks who grew up here. The ‘bigger than life’ murals I’ve created are simply my way of taking something old and making it new again. John Ryan www.jryanworks.com www.portfolio-verobeach.com

POCKET THE DATE keeps you organized in 2015! A beautiful yet simple calendar for staying truly organized is designed by local resident Lyn Kennedy who likes being organized, so much so that when she couldn’t find a desk calendar with pockets to store her important monthly papers, she created one of her own! What began as a binder and three-hole-punched pages with squares drawn for each month led to requests from friends (and even a few strangers) to create one for them. Now, seven years later, Pocket The Date Calendar is popular across the United States, Canada and even adorns a few desks in Europe. Sold on-line, in stationery and specialty stores, it is a cult favorite with busy mothers, brides, and students. This year’s fun chevron pattern in turquoise and orange will brighten any desk or workspace! Complete with spiral binding, a heavy cover, extra pages for notes and a sturdy elastic binding to keep papers in the pockets, it is the only agenda of its kind. me to discuss a new project, it’s up to me to help them put that concept together. It’s important that I understand what they are visualizing so we can work together to achieve only the finest. This project was focused on creating a combined home office and theater. We incorporated proper storage for audio-visual components as well as file drawers and bookshelves. When the screen is down, the home theater will have an impressive, larger-than-life presentation, and the lighted shelving on either side will provide a perfect accent. When the screen is up, we are back to a beautiful, organized home office with plentiful book storage. Undertaking a new assignment can be challenging but amazingly rewarding. Communication with our clients is always the number one priority here at Snows Custom Cabinetry. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

Artistic, Custom Concrete Designs

W

hen you think of “concrete” what comes to mind is not usually associated with words like ‘artistic’ and ‘beautiful’ but one visit to Coulter Designs and you will never see concrete the same way. The concrete is textured and designed to uniqueness of the customer, resulting in a exceptional product that even if replicated would produce a distinctive finish each time. One peek into the Coulter Designs showroom and you see this distinctiveness in every inch of this eclectic space. This is where concrete’s universal appeal is seen through the individualized designs and vast array of custom surfaces that it can cover, like their outstanding “concrete wood.” Richard Coulter, owner and artisan, of Coulter Designs, emphasizes the importance of the customer’s viewpoint and input when creating each sample, “we want them to love it…” which he has found doesn’t take very long. The concrete is specially formulated and often includes mixed, natural materials incorporated into the design. “This isn’t your sidewalk concrete,” Richard often explains to customers while showing them many ways of testing the strength and durability of the concrete overlays. Simply put, Coulter Designs transforms the idea of concrete to be more than “industrial” but also beautiful and functional that lasts for years to come. Richard’s recent creation for Joe Caragol, is a great example of the industrial and artistic character of his work. As if sliced from a boulder, this slab has been strategically stained to honor the beautiful oceanic bodies of the Florida coastline. Outlined in English Red, the state and surrounding territories have a subtle but vibrant appeal on the finished surface. The base, a natural driftwood reclaimed from the same blue waters on map provides an organic compliment to this concrete slab. Stop in for yourself and be inspired. If you can dream it, we can do it, no matter where your heart calls home.

life well loved Waldo’s Secret Garden

W

aldo’s Secret Garden is no secret to Vero Beach. The garden is celebrating its 100th birthday this year and its third year of being an event venue. Waldo Sexton broke ground on the land circa 1914 building his home, dairy barn and various other barns around the property. The land possesses a rich tradition of entertaining and brings happiness to all who enter the property. The unique architecture is what attracts many brides to the garden - designed using driftwood, wrought iron, Pecky Cypress and hidden within a lush jungle of exotic trees and plants. Hildie Tripson and her daughter, Charlotte have been operating the Waldo’s Secret Garden wedding business since 2011. After a friend’s wedding on the property four years ago, Charlotte put Waldo’s Secret Garden online and the e-mails began to flood in. “Brides and grooms often lose the option to choose their own vendors, and we know that it is an important part of their big day; so I believe that we sparked people’s attention by allowing them to bring in the vendors of their choice,” Charlotte said. Waldo’s Secret Garden has become a one-stop shop for flowers and wedding invitations with Hildie as the in-house florist and Charlotte as the graphic designer. The whimsical secret garden has been featured in “The Knot,” Pottery Barn’s Wedding Blog “Have and Hold,” “Green Wedding Shoes,” and “100 Layer Cake!”

L

ocal founders of WetMutt, Julia and Eddie Dunford, have a brand new concept in dog bedding. This is their story. Eddie and Julia proudly own two labs and two German shorthairs. Their dogs are very active, always playing in the water, rolling in dirt and constantly shedding. They found themselves replacing smelly dog beds and kennel mats every couple of weeks. Every kennel mat they tried just never held up. An easy solution would be to remove the dog bed covers or place the kennel mat in the washing machine for laundering, but since their two children have allergies this was just not an option. Eddie and Julia’s only option was to find a waterproof, odor resistant and easy-to-clean kennel mat. After years of searching the markets, they decided to make their own. They discovered an injection foam, similar to that in Crocs shoes, and began making their own coverless kennel mats. Their new company, WetMutt, cut a proprietary deal under the “Kong” name and now the beds are sold in over 900 stores and are available online at www.petsmart.com. The Kong mats fit into any standard size crate or wire kennel. The mat’s lightweight and shock-absorbent qualities make it perfect for traveling pets. Another great use for the mats is for puppy potty training. Liquids and odors can’t absorb into the closed-cell material, making it easy to clean up any messes. On top of being a household pet product, the mats are making a big splash in the hunting retriever and sporting dog side of the pet industry. The Dunford’s believe in giving back and donated beds to the Indian River Humane Society and many of the local veterinarians in town are also currently using them. WetMutt is now working with other pet industry leaders designing new concepts, which will hopefully make their way to shelves in the near future. Please look for the foam Kong Crate Mats at PetSmart. Visit them online at www.wetmuttdogproducts.com to check out their other products. WetMutt is proud to support local businesses. (855) Wet-Mutt www.wetmuttdogproducts.com

‘tis the season… To Be Thankful!

I

t is a wonderful time of year to enjoy family and friends, and to celebrate the season. Holiday activities are fun for us, but we must remember that parties and loud noises may be frightening to our pets. Make special arrangements for your furry family members if they become anxious amidst the celebrations. If we indulge in good food during the holiday season the worst we can expect is a little weight gain and maybe a reach for the antacids, but the same cannot always be said for our pets. Every year we see pets that have enjoyed a holiday dinner resulting in nausea or vomiting and dysentery, often requiring a thorough physical exam, blood work, x-rays and medication. The worst scenario is the pet that has had access to turkey, chicken or steak bones, etc. resulting in obstruction and/or intestinal perforation which requires surgery. Chocolate, another holiday temptation, is toxic to our pets. It is best just to refrain from offering our pets our delectable dinners or desserts. We all enjoy the decorations of the season including tinsel on the Christmas tree, twinkling lights and hanging ornaments but these can also be hazards to our pets. Young pets love to chew on electrical cords, which can result in mouth burns or can chew on potentially toxic plants. Place cords and toxic plants out of reach of pets. Kittens like to climb Christmas trees, which can result in the tree falling down. Place and secure your tree in a way that our kittens can avoid this temptation. Avoid placing ornaments and tinsel on the bottom of the tree to keep them out of reach of our pets as they can be an irritant to the stomach or require surgery if our pets become obstructed. As we prepare for the season, let’s remember to be thankful for all the blessings we have especially our family, friends and pets. If you are considering expanding your pet family as part of your holiday this year, you’ll want to match the pet with the personality of your family and your lifestyle. Resources for food, veterinary care, boarding and emergency situations should also be thoughtfully considered. We at Indian River Animal Hospital wish you and your pets a happy, safe and wonderful holiday season! Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, INC. eat shop play beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe.

Lauren, age 10. Photo by Jill Douglas

TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming

into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

November-December 2014

horoscope

As we enter the holiday season, the celestial currents for November and December contain a combination of both cheerful and challenging aspects. Be prepared to take the good with the bad. Mark in your calendar the Full Moons on November 6th and December 6th. Everything is heightened during those dates. Remember, the heavens are in the mood for change and despite the ups and downs, your goal is to enjoy family and friends, and be of good cheer. Happy Holidays! ARIES: You have needed a lucky break and you should have several on the work front in November...that is, if you have done all the preparation work, and paid your dues. In December, benevolent Jupiter is in your section of love, romance, creativity and children. You won’t be bored and you certainly will feel more cheerful than you have in months. TAURUS: That Full Moon on November 6th will be in your sign Taurus. It will draw attention to your relationship section. Something is brewing. Depending on how honest you have been about what you really want, it will either be a positive time or perhaps a time to bring something out into the open. Everything in December points to your personal life. Whatever holding pattern you have been in for the last two years is ending, and that is something to celebrate. GEMINI: By the end of November, a bunch of planets will be positioned in Sagittarius, your opposite sign. This will bring some lighthearted fun. Just make sure you use caution and don’t go overboard. If single, there could be a new relationship. The Full Moon on December 6th is in your sign, and making nice aspects. Whatever is working in your life will probably get even better. During mid-December things might get a bit tense with someone. Just stand your ground, and use your charm to calm any difficult situation. CANCER: The month of November has a bunch of planets in Scorpio, another water sign like Cancer. Being the most emotional Zodiac sign, all Crabs need to guard against blowing situations out of proportion during this time. A New Moon in Capricorn, your opposite sign, occurs on December 21st. This is also when Saturn, the taskmaster, makes its presence known. Someone may be trying to make you take them more seriously. Trust your gut. No one has better intuition than a Cancerian. LEO: There are nice aspects for love during the month of November for all Leos. Venus, the planet of romance, will be in the fiery sign of Sagittarius starting November 16th. If you are happy with your current love, all is well. But if you are single, a new arrival may be appearing, so enjoy. December brings changes to the home front. Leos love nice things. Have fun shopping but make sure you don’t go overboard. VIRGO: Virgos are the perfectionists of the Zodiac and others tend to rely on them for advice. When the Full Moon in Taurus on November 6th shines its light, you will be called to figure out complicated situations and bring about perfect solutions. A New Moon in your fellow earth sign, Capricorn, on December 21st will demand that you make some serious changes to your home even though you are busy with the holiday season, try to clear out a few closets or the garage and realize there are a lot of thrift shops that could use what no longer serves you. LIBRA: Cautious Saturn will make certain that any new business you are conducting in November should be carefully looked over by trusted advisors. The Full Moon on November 6th would be a great time to throw one of your elegantly prepared parties. In fact, the month of December continues this trend of party throwing and party going. Enjoy being the center of attention!

November-December 2014

SCORPIO: Mercury, the planet of communication, will be spending November 8th through the 27th in your sign. Your insights and intuition will be spot on. During the month of December, you will finally be saying goodbye to serious Saturn. For two and a half years you have felt his foot on your back, pushing you to work harder. On December 23rd this two-year cycle ends, and trust me, you will be delighted. You are finished with the constant tests. SAGITTARIUS: You are feeling like something important is brewing and you can’t put your finger on why you feel this way. You are just sniffing out the fact that Saturn, the task master, plans to camp out in your sign for the next two years, starting on December 23rd. Don’t even try to anticipate what this might mean. Just know it is time to set new intentions and build a better framework for your life. This November and December will have you feeling as if you are about to enter a new school, for a two year program. It can be exciting and a bit daunting at the same time. CAPRICORN: With Mars in your sign in November, you will be more assertive than usual. On November 6th, this lovely and passionate Full Moon will mean you should plan a special night with your partner, and if you don’t have a partner, realize you are under nice influences to magnetize someone special. The New Moon in your sign on December 21st will highlight your appearance, and how you present yourself to the world. Make sure you spend time doing nice things for yourself amidst all the holiday chaos. AQUARIUS: Around November 9th through 12th, you will need to spend more one-on-one time with someone in your family. Aquarians are always so busy taking care of others and seeing the big picture that they can forget about the importance of quiet time with loved ones. It is time to slow down because in December you are off to the races. Energetic Mars is in your sign, starting on December 4th, bringing a lot of passion and bold energy into your life. It is a prime time for expansive thinking on all fronts. PISCES: The New Moon on November 22nd might put you into the hermit mode for at least a week. When we get to the Full Moon on December 6th, in lighthearted Gemini, you will be ready for a bright and festive holiday party. On December 10th, Venus sets off for serious Capricorn, and your section of the chart related to groups. Your mission is to be the leader and delegate jobs to all the right people. You have never been afraid to help a good cause, but it is ok to make yourself a priority as well.

Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
