Oh, how I wish every day could be a vacation day. Living the Vero Beach lifestyle can be that way if you take advantage of where you live. My family took our “first” major vacation this summer to an exotic island in the Caribbean. For the past few years, we had been enjoying all the pleasures of our resort town that we didn’t want to travel. Vero Beach is truly paradise. We’ve got almost everything you could ever want to do here without ever packing your suitcase. In this issue, we have discovered some amazing local eateries that we hope you will take the time to visit. They are off the beaten path, and are not fancy at all. However, what they lack in outward appearances they make up for in amazingly fresh, high quality food. They have a great laid back atmosphere, too! It’s hard to believe that it has been one year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Talking about cancer is difficult, at least it has been for me. I never wanted anyone to feel sorry for me. Over this past year, I have met some amazing new friends, all because of getting cancer. Cancer doesn’t always mean a death sentence. We hope that you will find inspiration and strength from the stories shared in our “Breast Friends” feature. Even in the most unusual circumstances there is greatness to be found. As women, and as a community, we should support each other, lift each other up and be kind, ALWAYS. Life is way too short. Please come out and support the community events being held in October for breast cancer awareness. Schedule those yearly exams. Get checked. Know your body. Early detection will save your life. I know, it saved mine. Take time to relax, and soak up some sunshine. Our crazy “season” will be here before you know it! See you at the beach,

Tea & Chi One of Downtown’s Best Kept Secrets

T

ea and Chi, in the heart of downtown Vero Beach, has been a local institution since Randy and I opened our doors, August 1st, 2003. Both of us are marine biologists by training and worked in aquaculture for many years before we decided it was time for a lifestyle change. Tea and Chi was that change. We offer some of the world’s finest loose leaf teas, tisanes and tea accessories. We import tea from all around the world and carry over 250 fine, plain and naturally flavored, black, oolong, green, white, rooibos, lapacho, yerba mate, fruit and herbal teas, as well as, everything you need to brew the perfect cup, or gallon, of tea. We sell tea by the pot or by the ounce to our retail customers, and by the pound to our wholesale customers. We carry organic teas, single estate, rare teas, and a large assortment of expertly flavored teas and tisanes. We boast one of the largest selections of rooibos teas anywhere. Each day we offer a small selection of house-made soups, a specialty plate or two and our signature pastries, to accompany your choice of hot or iced tea. Enjoy an afternoon with friends sharing a pot of tea and scones, a chai latte or some bubble teas. Come investigate the many forms, smells and flavors or our current seasonal tea flavors, newest teapots and accessories. For us tea is a way to better health, and a way to socialize with friends or to meet new people. Our little tea place is a spot to spend a quiet afternoon with a good book or to grab a refreshing, frozen, bubble tea. We turn to tea for the quiet moment, for the comfort of the taste and the aroma, for the little lift it gives us, for the health benefits, and for the companionship of it. We drink tea for the “chi:” the “vital energy” it provides. It’s not just a beverage; it’s our way of life.

or over ten years now, Taco Mobil has been known for creating local, fresh authentic tacos and other Mexican dishes every Friday through Sunday in Fellsmere. What started out as just a part-time weekend food truck has now grown into three locations of Taco Mobil stores. Locals from all over the Treasure Coast now can enjoy Taco Mobil in Sebastian on 510, and also at the newly opened store in Miracle Mile in Vero Beach. Javier and his wife, Melina, are the owners of all three Taco Mobil locations. Javier, born in Mexico, has been here since he was four-years old. Before becoming an entrepreneur at Taco Mobil, Javier was the lead singer in a band. A friend of his inspired him to start his food truck business on the weekends. At first, Javier rejected his friend’s idea to do the food truck business. “I was a lead singer in a band. No way was I going to sell tacos from a food truck,” Javier told his friend. After several months went by, Javier changed his “tune,” and the rest is history! He still enjoys songwriting and has his own studio in his home. weet Ali was born from a passion I had for cooking since I was little, and specifically for sweets. Between my mother and grandmothers kitchen, I learned the art of cooking and mixing ingredients to create exquisite plates. In addition, in Ecuador, it is a tradition for weddings and big social events to put tables filled with sweets around the cake. This culture and influence was all around me while growing up. My grandmothers would always like to elaborate in all types of traditional sweets that utilized local ingredients. Like minones, guava sweets, alfajores, truffles, and marzipans. When moving from Ecuador to Miami, Florida, a place full of culture, colors, and every type of food you can imagine. I experimented with a culinary fusion inspired by my surrounding. All my friends from different countries would give me their traditional recipes, and that’s how I would start experimenting and merging together all these flavors to create spectacular sweets and plates. I would always bring my truffles to events we were invited too, or as gifts, and they would always tell me “put them in a box and start your own company”. When we relocated to Vero Beach three years ago, I wanted to start something new, so I created my small company Sweet Ali, and started going to small expos and stopping by different restaurants around town, getting my name known. That’s how people started getting to know my flavors that would melt in your mouth, and they would say that is was one of the best truffles they had ever tried. Last year, I worked with large companies that opened my doors to a different type of clientele, by ordering boxes of truffles for their most prestigious clients. In addition, all my sweets are elaborated with exquisite quality dough and love. Every truffle is made by hand, and wrapped in its own cover. The clients favorite ones include the coconut, coffee and chocolate truffle, the alfajores of dulce and leche, or nutella, and the nutmeg truffles. Between my role as a mother to my three children and husband, I have been able to make my passion come to life through my company.

Life is One Long Celebration Especially After Cancer

M

y story began in late 2013, just before my 50th birthday. A routine mammogram screening discovered that I had a complicated cyst in my right breast. Nothing in my left. My family physician, Dr. Kristen Kelly, recommended that I get a second opinion. She referred me to Dr. Robert Gardner, who had quite a reputation for being a boob man (wink, wink). Within days, he saw me at his office in West Palm Beach. From our initial consultation, I felt at ease. After a few months of needle aspirations and biopsies with benign results, new tumor cells started changing in their pathology. Every day I woke up worrying whether today would be the day that they turned into cancer. It consumed me. Waking up happy and positive is pretty easy for me. I’m a “glass is half full” kind of gal. For those of you who truly know me, you know that I LOVE LIFE! I made a decision to voluntarily remove both of my breasts BEFORE I got a cancer diagnosis. We scheduled surgery for the end of October of 2014. We were being proactive. However, life had a different plan for me. On the morning of August 15th, 2014, in a car loaded with six of my gal pals headed to “mermaid camp” to celebrate my 50th birthday, I found out I had breast cancer in my left breast. This was a day when we were celebrating life, and now I was really worried about death. I had this gut feeling before Dr. G ever said the words out loud. It felt like time stood still. I just needed to breathe. Your life fasts forward in your mind like a movie preview playing out scenes of a life with

you no longer in it. I was in shock. Immediately, I called my husband who has always been my anchor; my lifeline. I needed to hear his voice and I needed him to tell me it was all going to be okay. I am so very thankful for all my “support bras” that surrounded me with love, laughter and words of encouragement. After I got over the initial punch in the gut, I read, researched, and had major discussions with Dr. Gardner and his staff. I was ready to be aggressive. My decision was an easy one for me-take them off. Everyone’s cancer treatment is different. This is a no-judgment zone. Do what YOU feel is best for YOU. Do what is right for you. This is YOUR body. Breast cancer doesn’t always mean a death sentence. Women are being proactive about their health. Know your body. Get checked. Get a second opinion. I ended up having two very different types of breast cancer on each side (the right one was discovered after surgery through final pathology). For the next five years, I will take a little white pill to help prevent reoccurrence. Early detection is critical. It could save your life. My wish is that no one should ever have to face something like this alone. Through this challenging and difficult time, I have made amazing new friendships, strengthened old ones, and I try to never take one second of this life for granted. Live your life to the fullest NOW. Don’t wait until you get a cancer diagnosis. Enjoy every minute that you have on this beautiful, amazing planet. I know I do. ave you ever had a moment where your life flashes before your eyes; your hopes, dreams, and accomplishments, and in the blink of an eye before you can even process it all, your mind just goes blank? I noticed my left breast was swollen and sore so I made an appointment with my gyno, and after a breast exam, the doctor said I needed to have an ultrasound and a mammogram. I felt shocked and confused. I had just turned 29 and I thought I had a good 15-20 years before I had to face the dreaded mammogram. I had to wait five days for an appointment to have those tests done. After an ultrasound and a mammogram of both breasts, I had to wait three more days for my doctor’s office to call with results. At this point, everyday started to feel like an eternity. I missed the call and heard an unsettling voicemail. Feeling no sense of relief, a dear friend I confided in got me an appointment with another

www.portfolio-verobeach.com

doctor who had treated her for breast cancer. The staff at this office welcomed me with open arms and made me feel as at ease as anyone could be in this situation. While the doctor was performing the ultrasound on my left breast, he said he didn’t see anything of concern. It was the first time in over two weeks I felt like I actually took a deep breath. He then proceeded to check the right breast. That’s when he said, “we have a problem.” There was a large mass that he performed a core needle biopsy on that day. Although I was in the hands of an incredible doctor and overwhelmed with the love and support of friends and family, I couldn’t see the rainbow after the storm anymore. The stress and anxiety of waiting had severely diminished my quality of life in just a few weeks. I was in a lot of pain from the biopsy, I wasn’t sleeping, I couldn’t eat, crying became involuntary, and I couldn’t feel the light in my smile.

As I was essentially planning for the end, I got “the call.” I have a tumor and need follow-up treatment, but it’s not cancer. In my mind, I wanted to do a cartwheel and then high-five the sky. I wish I could tell you that I immediately felt better, but I didn’t. The rollercoaster of emotions had taken me for one heck of a ride and when I finally got off I felt sick (and it’s 100% NORMAL to feel that way). Everyday gets a little better and I’m looking at a different bigger picture through a new frame of mind. My hope is to spread awareness to catch tumors before they turn into cancer and, for women of all ages, to be proactive about their health. Learn to understand your body and listen when it speaks to you. A very brave woman shared her story with me and it changed my life. I hope mine can do the same. May your fear make you braver than you ever thought possible and may you always know that you are not alone. This challenge has really taught me that no matter how I feel, I need to get up, dress up, show up, and never give up! #loveandlight #awareness By Ashley Franke, age 29 September-October 2015

Cancer Is Life Altering No Matter What the Diagnosis Don’t Let It Be What Life is All About

W

hen I was invited to write about my story—I couldn’t think of where to start, what to share, how much to share, but I knew that I needed to say something. “You have breast cancer.” That’s the news I heard on February 12, 2014, at 4:20pm, as I dropped my daughter and a group of her friends off for tennis lessons. Two weeks prior to that day, I had a routine mammogram that turned into a biopsy, which led to “THOSE” words. I will never forget that day. Fear was my first emotion. Then, anxiety raised its ugly head and hung around for awhile, and still shows up from time to time. Then anger jumped on board, and that is the one emotion that had me lacing up my gloves for our fight. It was my motivator. Don’t get me wrong, I am not angry all the time, actually my humor came back quickly, which has carried me to this point, and is my best medicine. From the moment we found out my diagnosis, my husband, my daughter, my friends, and family have been there. For me, it has been a “we” not always a “me.”

My cancer was treatable, but we would have to make some choices. As I sit here today, I feel fortunate that I had choices—many choices with good outcomes, but they are not easy choices. After gathering information from physicians and more testing and procedures, we made the

I never searched the internet for more details, I knew it would make me crazy! My doctor told me that over 90% of all breast cancer is cured, which gave me hope. I learned to tune out old breast cancer stories because new research and advances have been made in the last few years that have changed outcomes and treatments. Others were also stressed to learn about my cancer, and I had to be prepared to hear what they had to say. In the weekends leading up to my 2nd surgery, I prepared food for my freezer. That kept me busy In every situation, there is something positive. Cancer has provided me a great opportunity to slow down and learn more about myself. Faced with my greatest challenge, I can still laugh and tackle what lies ahead.

It Does Make a Difference! our mammogram shows a suspicious mass.” Those words were more impactful than, “I have bad news. You have cancer.” My life slowed down professionally and personally. Instead of days without enough time, I was in slow motion. Day after day, I was waiting for doctor’s appointments, further tests, second opinions, and test results. I knew I would not be the patient who kept their cancer a secret. I knew people would learn I had cancer. I wanted them to talk to me and my family rather than shy away or be uncomfortable around me. I told our Chamber Board of Directors the day following my diagnosis and made a public announcement four days later. You think you know something about cancer until you have it. It’s then that you realize how little you actually know. It’s like learning a new language. ER+, HER2-, adjuvant treatment,

decision to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. It gave us the best odds to reduce a reoccurrence. We were fortunate to have met a wonderful breast specialist who had over thirty years of experience supporting women and men with a variety of breast conditions. We also met one amazing Hematologist/Oncologist who’s experience and honesty were turning points in my treatment choices. We appreciate every doctor that educated us along the way. They provided us with valuable information, and were caring and supportive about our decisions. Don’t get me wrong there were arguments and bad language mixed in! My support also came from survivors. People, whose paths crossed mine through this crazy ride. These amazing people who had breast cancer, or other types of cancer, did not hesitate to share their personal stories. They gave us hope and honesty. As one survivor told me, “my life is not all about my cancer diagnosis, but it is definitely a part of my life”. I understand. That is our goal…

If that means we can achieve that and make a little less profit so everyone is able to afford it—to afford quality pure ingredients—we’re going to do it. If everyone cannot profit, and I’m not speaking financially, but health-wise, then for me, I feel like I am not really achieving my goals. Most people do not know what is in skincare, some people don’t really care because “out of sight out of mind,” but we’re trying to shed some light on those subjects so people can be more aware of what they are putting on their skin. What sparked starting Benali was when I was pregnant with our son. I was looking for more natural alternatives for our family and had been using essential oils. We were already conscious about chemicals in skincare products but paying $10-$15 for soap that didn’t last long and that we were not crazy about was hard for us. So, we decided to start making our own. It turned out to

So, for every product sold, one dollar goes to our favorite charity: charity:water, for people around the world to get clean water, something many of us often take for granted . Our soap making turned into a passion of making bath and skincare products like soap, lip balm, scrubs, and bath soaks, in addition to giving back to the community! We’re pretty excited about it.

Kombucha The Immortal Health Elixir

O

riginally discovered in Northeast China, this rejuvenating drink is overflowing with bountiful healing properties. You may have heard about Kombucha on Dr. Oz, or seen it in bottles at the local Fresh Market, but what exactly is this alleged cure all? Kombucha is a fermented beverage made from black tea, sugar and a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, commonly known as SCOBY. SCOBY is the essential component that facilitates the fermentation process. Once this process is complete, the results yield a vinegary flavored drink rich in B vitamins, probiotics, enzymes and an array of beneficial acids. Kombucha can be made in various flavors at home and is also sold at most local health food stores. Due to its many health benefits, Kombucha has become classified as a functional food. Recent research published in the Journal of Medicinal Food 2014, says, It is shown that Kombucha aids in health preservation and recovery due to four main properties: detoxification, anti-oxidation, energizing potencies, and promotion of boosting immunity. Here are five reasons why you should start incorporating this powerful elixir into your regimen: Aids Digestion. The probiotics and enzymes in Kombucha assist with proper digestion of foods and better nutrient absorption. Butyric acid is one of the acids present that improve the gut wall by maintaining a healthy pH balance in the stomach. Boosts the Immune System. The probiotics promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract which strengthen the immune system. The acetic acid, a bi-product of the fermentation, prevents the bad bacteria from flourishing, making Kombucha a natural antibiotic. Detoxifying. High in vitamin C and powerful antioxidants, Kombucha has notable abilities to protect the cells from free radical damage and oxidative stress. This quality will help protect the body from inflammatory disease, immunodeficiency and prevent cancer. Research demonstrates

Kombucha has the capacity to cleanse the liver, not only improving liver disease, but also curing a hangover! Joint Health. Kombucha is loaded with glucosamines, which increase synovial hyaluronic acid production. This supports the preservation of collagen and prevents arthritic pain. In the same way it supports joint collagen, it also supports collagen of the entire body and reduces the appearance of wrinkles on the skin. Improve Energy. Kombucha contains minimal amounts of caffeine and B-vitamins, which can stimulate the body. The iron released from the black tea during fermentation helps boost blood hemoglobin, improve oxygen supply to tissues and create higher energy levels. By Jessica Donnelly, A.P. immigrated from Central Vietnam to Iowa, and then to Tennessee in 2004, where I lived for almost 11 years. I was the owner, operator and nail technician for Golden Nails and Q-Nails in Greeneville, Tennessee. After visiting Vero Beach to escape a cold winter in Tennessee, I moved here in April of 2015. I fell in love with the sunny skies, the warm climate, a quieter, slower lifestyle and friendly people. After many years of experience in the beauty industry, the Sunshine State and town of Vero Beach has given me the wonderful opportunity to open Q-Nails & Co. What makes us different from other nails salons here in town? T

he Shore lb. Throw-Down is a skimboarding contest, established in Vero Beach in 2008. This contest is the largest single-day skimboarding contest in the world, attracting contestants from as far away as San Paulo, Brazil; Se Simbra, Portugal; Laguna Beach, California; as well as from all over the state of Florida. All of the proceeds from the Shore lb. Throw-Down benefit the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association (VBLA.org). Skimboarding is a water sport that takes place in the shore break (shore pound). It starts by running on the dry sand, dropping the board in the water and riding as far as you can. While on the board, the athlete tries to complete as many tricks as possible while riding the wave. The tricks originated from a combination of sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. The origin of the sport can be traced back as far as the Polynesians, yet most of the history comes from Ocean Rescue Lifeguards in Laguna Beach, California. They originally used the first

A Perfect Strategy! The strategies for creating a billion dollar brand right here in our backyard.

L

ocal businessman Dennis Cunningham no stranger to the word “billion”. His previous companies created more than two point one billion dollars in sales and he had more than 1,500 employees. Now he’s on to the next big thing…vodka. And, he’s got an amphitheater and an app as part of his Perfect strategy. Q: Tell me about the Perfect Vodka Amphitheater. When I bought Perfect Vodka my number one goal was to make sure everybody tried the smoothest vodka on earth! We took home a gold medal in 2014 International Craft Awards Competition in the ultra-premium spirits category for the smoothest and best tasting vodka. With more than 500 thousand people enjoying Perfect Vodka at our Amphitheatre, in the fourth largest drinking market in the country, we know millions of people will now get to try healthier, better for you, great tasting vodka! Q: What makes Perfect Vodka so different? It’s GMO free. Meaning no genetically modified organisms are in our vodka. It’s gluten free and we only use quality ingredients. We’re based in Palm Beach Gardens, but our wheat comes from the Brie champagne fields in France and our water is distilled five times from Vosges Mountains which are known for their premier, high quality water. Perfect Vodka is the only known vodka to 32

require a certificate of origin and quality with every bottle. When you start with the right product, with the best ingredients and a unique strategy, we think we have the next billion-dollar brand. Q: So what’s the strategy to get to be a billion dollar brand? By buying the naming rights to the largest amphitheater in the south (which just happens to be in our backyard) we are now associated with all the musical artists that come here and perform on tour. We are using the power of the Live Nation platform to introduce the world to Perfect Vodka. We also own a mobile gifting app called Airtab. If we have our way we will have two billion dollar brands! Airtab, to allow people to gift items virtually, and Perfect Vodka.

Q: Tell me more about Airtab. It’s an app to allow people to “gift” items to other people from your phone. For example you can literally send someone a drink or send them, a nice dinner at say, Carmine’s Ocean Grille redeemable right from your phone. We are aggressively seeking to create a demand for our Airtab app. The way we are doing that is by kicking off the Celebrity Airtab Challenge. Our objective is to utilize more than 200 million of the celebrity twitter followers in an aggressive twitter campaign to help raise money and awareness for children’s charities by gifting items on Airtab. We’ve already got poker superstar Jamie Gold signed on and dozens of other big named celebs that I can’t even tell you about yet! Q: So what’s next? We are creating a unique strategy to bring our brand to the public by bypassing the traditional methods used in the liquor industry. Q: How do you feel about all the competition out there? Nobody else has our strategies, our ingredients or our technologies! There is no competition in my mind. Q: With all of this going on, when do you find the time to sleep? I don’t sleep much! When you are building a billion dollar brand, you don’t sleep. My wife, Felicia, and I have a baby on the way, so I’m not sure I can count on more sleep anytime soon! www.PerfectVodka.com www.airtab.me

The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday Today’s UDT-SEAL Museum was built on the hard work of yesterday.

Q

uietly fixed on a sleepy beach in Fort Pierce stands a resilient facility that has seen many storms. It humbly houses an extraordinary collaborative collection of historic artifacts many of us are too young to truly appreciate, and most of us most often take for granted. It’s hard to believe that just south of Seagrape-dappled sand dunes where picnickers enjoy endless summer days nearly year round, and just north of beaches that boast world-renowned surfing, exists a museum open to the public that offers an authentic glimpse into a world largely unknown or understood—that of the Navy SEALs. Conception of the SEAL Museum was first deliberated, and ultimately executed, by former members of the Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) and Sea, Air, Land (SEAL) Teams. Men who served as part of the elite units tasked with clandestine, unconventional warfare, and special reconnaissance gathered artifacts and experiences to establish a lasting legacy built on the same extraordinary foundation of fortitude they devoted to their military careers. They ardently transformed the inoperative Fort Pierce Treasure Museum and dedicated it a new facility to honor Navy SEALs. In 1985, doors

34

opened as the official Navy UDT-SEAL Museum; in 2007, it was designated a National Museum by act of Congress. The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum has continued to evolve and grow, in architecture and artifacts, but also in community events and outreach. In spring of 2015, extensive renovations were completed, more than doubling the Museum’s size, with the addition of interactive exhibits and new installments. While so much of their work has remained fiercely guarded under a staunch shroud of concealment, the SEALs’ posture and

objective have become increasingly illuminated in recent years. Bestselling memoirs, blockbuster war movies, websites peddling “official” gear, and militaristic computer games have infiltrated mainstream media. We are a culture fascinated by untold war stories of the sculpted, steel-nerved, camouflage-clad, immovable maritime heroes. Serving to satiate civilian curiosity, the Museum doesn’t disappoint delivering an authentic experience, emphasizing the danger, discipline, and decoration associated with Navy SEAL life. The unique venue preserves and reveals covert tales by avenue of antiquity, and allows visitors a window into the world of these naval commandos. In addition to enjoying the installations, guests can test their fitness on the outdoor ops course, as well as clamber around retired naval vessels and vehicles on Museum grounds. This Veterans Day will mark the 30th Annual Muster and Music Festival Weekend. November 6-8 will see an anticipated record number of visitors engaging in live demonstrations, a 5K beach run, a Members-only complimentary luncheon, and a powerful memorial service commemorating the fallen. Food, fun, and festivities, as well as honor, history, and heritage will be served as part of a remarkable and memorable weekend. Life Through a Lens A passport into the illustrious mind behind these captivating photos.

P

hotographers use their cameras as tools of exploration, passports to places we only dream of, and powerful creative outlets. Dale Sorensen Jr., has certainly taken the photography world by storm with his magnificent pictures. I had the opportunity to sit down with Dale Jr. for this interview, and he is as humble as he is talented. Dale Sorensen Jr., was born and raised in Vero Beach. He attended college at SMU and lived in Dallas for a short time before returning to Florida. His interest in photography had always been lingering in his mind, but he really started taking it seriously four years ago. His primary focus has been in landscape photography. Most of the images captured and places visited have required a good deal of effort and planning. Dale Jr., is no stranger to early mornings, traveling long distances, and scouting multiple locations for the perfect photograph. “I find it most inspiring and rewarding when all of these factors come together and I can capture a moment and an image that I am pleased with,” said Dale Jr. A: Where’s your favorite place to take photographs? DSJ: North Carolina has been by far my favorite place to take photos, mainly because it is a photographer’s paradise. Every time you turn the corner or drive down a country/mountain back road you stumble across another stream, valley, vista, river, or barn just to name a few. A: How did you learn your craft? DSJ: My good friend and architect, Greg Anderson, really shared with me his knowledge and expertise of the hobby, and told me from day 1 to practice, practice, practice…which I did as much as I possibly could. Fortunately, I was able to practice a lot with him and study the various composition techniques and again, continue to practice them. A: What is the most rewarding part for you? DSJ: For me the entire process is a rewarding experience. Dale Jr. hasn’t put a price tag on his photographs yet, but he has donated a few to charitable auctions. We are looking forward to what the future holds for Dale Sorensen Jr. Photography. By Ashley Franke

it’s a boater’s life Lines in the Lagoon Fishing Tournament

Founded by a Love for the Lagoon

L

ines in the Lagoon was an idea that was created when a group of high school friends and I were talking about things we could do to help the Indian River Lagoon, when the idea of a fishing tournament arose. The lagoon is a waterway that we all love to spend time on, whether it’s fishing, wakeboarding, tubing, or water skiing. Over the past several years, all of us had been watching the health of the lagoon decline. Seeing fish kills, algal blooms, and dolphins scarred with lesions made us realize that something had to be done before the waterway was completely destroyed. Lines in the Lagoon is a non-profit fishing tournament run by myself, Steven Croom, Bryce Hauser, Michael Villafuerte, Barrett Rhymes, Tommy Hammond, and Ritter Marchant. The first Lines in the Lagoon tournament was held in October of last year. Our wonderful participants and gracious sponsors helped make the event a huge success. More than 100 kids participated, and 22,000$ was raised for two organizations that are preforming research to benefit the lagoon. The tournament is open to anyone in grades K-12 in Indian River, Martin

and St. Lucie counties. The 2nd annual tournament will be held this year on October 17th. Our goal with the fishing tournament is not only to raise money, but more importantly, to raise awareness about what is happening to the lagoon. Many people today underestimate how their careless behavior will impact the environment. They believe that throwing a soda can or plastic bag overboard won’t do any damage to the waterway. Unfortunately, too many people think this way. The truth is, if enough people throw only one piece of trash overboard, then the collective effects of their actions can be damaging. Our last Indian River Lagoon cleanup showed us exactly what type of harm that these

items can cause. We found medical waste containers, diapers, deflated basketballs, automobile steering wheels, and much more garbage lying on beaches, and floating in the water. We believe the most important step in repairing the Indian River Lagoon is to motivate and instill a sense of urgency in the young people of our area, especially those who don’t feel connected to the lagoon. The waterway affects everybody in our community in some way, but many people do not feel drawn to it. The Lines in the Lagoon tournament is intended to bring young people together and show them what an exotic and diverse place the lagoon can be. By Quinn Hiaasen

Artistic, Custom Concrete Designs

W

hen you think of “concrete” what comes to mind is not usually associated with words like ‘artistic’ and ‘beautiful’ but one visit to Coulter Designs and you will never see concrete the same way. The concrete is textured and designed to uniqueness of the customer, resulting in a exceptional product that even if replicated would produce a distinctive finish each time. One peek into the Coulter Designs showroom and you see this distinctiveness in every inch of this eclectic space. This is where concrete’s universal appeal is seen through the individualized designs and vast array of custom surfaces that it can cover, like their outstanding “concrete wood.” Richard Coulter, owner and artisan, of Coulter Designs, emphasizes the importance of the customer’s viewpoint and input when creating each sample, “we want them to love it…” which he has found doesn’t take very long. The concrete is specially formulated and often includes mixed, natural materials incorporated into the design. “This isn’t your sidewalk concrete,” Richard often explains to customers while showing them many ways of testing the strength and durability of the concrete overlays. Simply put, Coulter Designs transforms the idea of concrete to be more than “industrial” but also beautiful and functional that lasts for years to come. Richard’s recent creation for Joe Caragol, is a great example of the industrial and artistic character of his work. As if sliced from a boulder, this slab has been strategically stained to honor the beautiful oceanic bodies of the Florida coastline. Outlined in English Red, the state and surrounding territories have a subtle but vibrant appeal on the finished surface. The base, a natural driftwood reclaimed from the same blue waters on map provides an organic compliment to this concrete slab. Stop in for yourself and be inspired. If you can dream it, we can do it, no matter where your heart calls home.

Travel Companions Tips to Know Before You Go!

T

rying to decide whether to travel with your pet? In cases of current illness or extreme motion sickness, it may be best to leave your pet with a trusted pet sitter or boarding facility. Once you’ve made the decision to bring your pet along, no matter how you travel—by automobile, boat or airplane— ensure your pet has current identification such as microchipping, a color photo, a leash or harness, their own food, water and bowls, a sufficient supply of any current medications, and updated medical records from your veterinarian. Ensure your pet is current on vaccinations, especially rabies, or has specific vaccinations that may be needed, depending on the destination. Assemble an emergency kit that includes such essentials as phone numbers (your veterinarian, poison control), an extra leash, a muzzle, gauze, non-stick bandages, hydrogen peroxide, and a digital thermometer. If your pet is traveling across state lines or to a different country, a health certificate signed by a veterinarian is required. When traveling overseas with your pet, you must follow the regulations of the United States as well as those of the country you are visiting. Contact the consulate or the embassy of the country being visited to ensure you are following the appropriate protocol. With some countries, compliance may take up to six months. Therefore, timing and careful planning are crucial. Your veterinarian can help with appropriate forms and certificates. If traveling by auto, especially in the mountains, ask your veterinarian for medication that may help with motion sickness. Bring the pet’s special blanket or toy and a well ventilated crate. Ensure you take breaks every 2 to 3 hours so your pet may exercise and have access to water. Locate emergency veterinary hospitals along your route just in case of an emergency. Traveling by boat presents similar situations as by car with the added need for proper health documentation. Consider rugs to prevent slipping and ramps to allow pets easy access on and off the boat. If traveling by plane, contact the airline to ensure you are complying with their specific regulations. When purchasing your airline ticket, make arrangements for your pet at the same time so there are no surprises. Depending upon size, some pets may travel with the passenger while some must travel in an air-pressurized cargo space. Specific crates may be required and often can be provided by the airline for a fee. Some airlines require health certificates that must be issued by your veterinarian within 10 days prior to travel or a certificate of acclimation that is signed by the veterinarian. With proper planning, both you and your pet can have a safe, fun trip. Bon Voyage! Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, Inc. He and Marjorie J. To The Person Who Passes Through This Place You, that pass and raise your arm to me before you hurt me, look at me well. I am the heat of your home in the cold winter nights. I am the friendly shade that you find when walking under the August sun and my fruits are appetizing freshness that satisfy your thirst on the way. I am the friendly beam of your house, the board of your table, the bed in which you rest, and the wood of your boat. I am the handle to your hoe, the door of your dwelling, the wood of your cradle and of your own coffin. I am the bread of goodness and the flower of beauty. You, that pass, look at me well and do no harm. ~Veiga Simões, Arganil, May 1914 Tree Poem A very special thanks to MaryEllen Bosetti for sharing this beautiful poem with us.

beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

life

in the stars

September is always a great month to refresh, renew and recharge. This September, we have Mercury retrograde from Sept 17th-Oct 9th, and this would be the most auspicious time for everyone to sit back and allow things to unfold. The more you push, the harder this period will be. There are two eclipses in September. The New Moon eclipse is on the 13th and the Full Moon eclipse is on the 27th. Mark those days on your calendar, and realize that a few days before and a few days after might be a little more heightened. The great news is that October looks very calm, so enjoy!

LIBRA: Figure out what you really want and move towards your goals after September 6th. There are uplifting aspects for your career mid-month, and especially on September 17th. The total Lunar Eclipse on September 27th, will bring partnership issues to the foreground. Libras are patiently fair, so just remember to keep your normal balanced state of mind. You will be very determined to finish a project around October 15th, and the good news is that you will be able to accomplish your goals quite easily. Overall, October has you very focused on work and making money. Just be cautious around October 22nd. You could get into an argument and if not careful, regret certain things that were said.

ARIES: September has you smiling. You are in a good mood, and ready to start new projects. On September 17th, Mercury will turn retrograde in your house of partnerships. This is a great time to review recent decisions with your partner, and make adjustments as necessary. If single, the New Moon on October 12th brings opportunities. If already partnered up, you might decide to ask for something you really want and actually get it. The end of October indicates some happy outcomes regarding a financial project you have been working on.

SCORPIO: September 5th is a powerful time for all Scorpios to speak up. You will be doing yourself and others a lot of good if you share your thoughts. Celebrate after September 17th, as you will feel as if a ten-pound weight has been lifted from your shoulders. October is your month, and your ruling planet, Pluto, is giving you a helping hand in the area of social activity. You might have to say goodbye to someone around October 10th. This is necessary so that there is space for someone new to show up. You have had a rough two years, and it is finally time to have some fun.

TAURUS: Mid-September you will need to be patient as there are lots of fiery planets stirring things up in your financial department. Try not to overextend yourself. A total Lunar eclipse on September 27th occurs in your house of secrets. You may find that you need to share something that has been bothering you. October 8th brings a pleasant respite, and good feelings in the love department. The Full Moon on October 27th is in your sign, Taurus. You will probably feel quite energized, so make sure you get out of any boring routines. GEMINI: Do not ignore anyone who wants you to meet someone new, especially mid-September. This person might end up being quite influential, and could help you start a new chapter of your life. By October 12th, you could have a new business partner, or love interest. No matter what, new people are showing up in a big way for you this Fall. Around October 30th, there are some beautiful aspects for socializing, so think about having a party! Invite your friends and coworkers. CANCER: Finally, your financial situation is looking positive as retrograde Venus goes direct on September 6th. Two eclipses will occur in September. The first is on the 13th, and the second is on the 27th. Mark those days on your calendar, as these dates are when you need to make some important decisions. Just make sure you trust your intuition. Once Mercury goes direct on October 9th, you can finally move forward on a domestic issue. Any lingering problems that you want to tie up will get resolved during the last week of October. You will feel a big sense of relief. LEO: If you need any financial advice, try to get it around September 5th. Your personal relationships will demand your attention mid-September. Someone may be requiring your upbeat energy, so try to be there for those in need. The lunar eclipse on September 27th highlights foreign travel and spirituality. If hopping on a plane to an exotic location is not possible, at least try to engage in a meditation or yoga practice. All of October is pretty spectacular for you, Leo, except for the time around October 10th. Someone might be wearing down your spirit. Try to be compassionate and realize not everyone is as blessed as you. VIRGO: You deserve a drastic turnaround, on some project that you have been working on for months, and it should come around September 6th. Finally, you will be able to move forward. The Solar Eclipse on the 13th will bring the Sun and Moon together in your sign, bringing more positive energy for achieving your goals. On October 8th, Venus, and the very emotional, Moon, will join forces in Virgo. There is a good chance you will be more emotional than usual. People are really appreciating you, and this good feeling continues for most of the month. The only tension, probably with a partner, might occur around October 23rd.

September-October 2015

SAGITTARIUS: There is a big surge of positive energy in your career section around the Solar Eclipse on September 13th. If you have done the proper work, this is a spectacular time for you professionally. On September 27th, you may find your romantic life sparking up. There are passionate days coming your way. October still has you focused on work, so just stay diligent. The Full Moon on October 27th brings more good fortune in the area of work. You may even get a raise, so be prepared to feel grateful. CAPRICORN: You are one of the most hard-working signs of the Zodiac and you will find some well-deserved practical assistance in your career area around September 5th. But right after this high point, there is a testy aspect on September 9th. Be very careful with your words and try not to get into arguments with higher ups. October 8th has you wanting to spend more time having fun, and it is important that you find that balance between work and play. Remember, at the end of the day that quality time with loved ones is what matters most. Halloween should be fun! You are not one to normally dress up but this year you might just be in the mood. AQUARIUS: You are such a humanitarian, always looking out for others, but early September indicates it is appropriate for you to start putting yourself first. Your personal finances might require attention around September 17th. Again, the key concept is to think of yourself first, then others. The total Lunar Eclipse on September 27th has you speaking your truths to people who need to hear it. October 8th has you focusing on financial matters. The full moon on October 27th has you pulled in too many directions. You have a tendency to spread yourself too thin. Be aware of giving too much to others. Self care is the life lesson for September and October! PISCES: On September 17th Mercury turns retrograde. For a couple of weeks things might not go as planned. There are two eclipses in September: the first is on the 13th and the second one is on the 27th. Mark those days on your calendar, also two days before and four days after. Things might be bumpy during these times, but at least you are prepared. People might comment on how dreamy you are around October 10th. Do not take it as a criticism. You are a visionary, and that should be celebrated. By the time we get to the Full Moon on October 27th, you will be showing people the practical results of your dreams and hard work. Remember it is only with a full Astrological reading (based on your birthdate, exact time, and place of birth) that Astrology can be truly accurate.
