The Road Less Traveled Sometimes, life doesn’t go according to plan. It detours. And that’s OK. You redirect your path, and you learn life lessons along the journey. This summer was one of those summers. The plan was to go explore new places with my family. Instead, I got to explore the road less traveled from here to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve driven across the state in the past few weeks. Instead of dreading these long drives, I loved the vast openness of the road. Some mornings, I would pull over to snap some photos of the sun sparkling off the pastures, pines and palm trees. I almost always spotted a Northern Crested Caracara sitting on a fence post! I traveled a similar road back in 2014, one which I thought I would not journey down again for a lifetime. I am now gently reminded of what is vitally important in my life. It’s LIFE. Something we all are guilty of taking for granted… me included. So, although this was not the summer I had planned, it was a summer surrounded by an amazing community of friends, and friends of friends, and family that has wrapped their arms around me, fed us, sent inspiring cards and gifts in the mail from all over, and it’s what truly matters. Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It can happen to anyone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for walking with us down this unchosen path—again. Come celebrate life with us on October 6 as we kick off another Paddle in Pink at Costa d’Este this year. We’ll be staycationing there all weekend to enjoy our little beachside paradise. I hope you will join us! In this issue, we encourage you to travel A1A with us from the top of our state to Miami. We didn’t have room to showcase every little place, so we decided to showcase our favorites. We always try to support our local state and county parks along our journeys, too. Florida is a vast land of many landscapes, and sometimes, it’s great to have a change of scenery.

Road
“I want to go on a road trip. Just you and me. The highway, the rado, the blue sky, the back roads and the windows rolled down. We’ll talk about everything and nothing. We’ll sing our hearts out, and we’ll make memories we’ll never forget. Just you and me…” ~ author unknown
Trippin’ One of my favorite roads to travel on is A1A. It is 338.752 miles in length, running along the Atlantic Ocean from Key West to Fernandina Beach, and has been in existence since 1945. Cruising along, there are so many places to get out, stretch your legs and explore. It showcases one of the most beautiful areas of our Sunshine State. It’s the main road through most of Florida’s oceanfront beach towns. It’s a beautiful, scenic coastal route with intracoastal and ocean views. A1A serves as a major thoroughfare through Miami and other south Florida coastal cities.

Our adventure began near Atlantic Beach at Talbot Island State Park. This area of Florida has very unique natural landscapes like the sun-bleached tree skeletons that line the shores of Big Talbot Island State Park. Along this gorgeous stretch of A1A where the St. Johns River meets the Atlantic Ocean, you can drive your car aboard the St. Johns River Ferry that links Mayport to Fort George Island. This area offers so much to see and do. Historically, you’ll love exploring this gem of a spot at the northern stretch of A1A.

As we headed south, our next stop was Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. With its majestic, dreamy old mossy oak trees on the river, to its coquina-formed rocky bluffs on the ocean side, this park is one of the best for exploring and beachcombing.

Cruising south on A1A across Sebastian Inlet State Park is where we captured our cover shot. The 1974 Volkswagon is owned by John and Susan Murphy. Used as a daily driver, they love cruising around in their vintage VW. Sebastian Inlet is home to well-known surfing spots like Monster Hole, Long Point and Spanish House.

We visited the Umbrella Skies exhibit, a community project in downtown Coral Gables – which was simply magical. Strolling along the three blocks of colorful umbrellas swaying overhead was well worth the stop. While there, we stopped in one of the local eateries and grabbed lunch for a beachside picnic at our final destination, Matheson Hammock Park, off Old Cutler Road. Although the park was damaged during Hurricane Irma, this little gem of a park is surrounded by a white sand beach and lots of palm trees. It’s a great place to kite surf, relax in the sun, enjoy a picnic and watch the boats cruise by. On a clear bright sunny day, the Miami skyline is breathtaking!

Enjoy the Mullet Run
I
hope everyone enjoyed the long summer. Boy, was it a hot one! Life should be returning to normal with school back in session, which means less people on the water for us fishermen. This is a very exciting time of year, as September and October are the mullet migration months off of the beach and in the Indian River Lagoon. It’s one of the largest migrations in the northern hemisphere and on the planet. If you’ve never witnessed this spectacular event, just take a walk down the beach any morning or evening and you’re likely to see an unbelievable show of feeding fish. Species include tarpon, snook, jack, Spanish mackerel, kings, along with sharks and other fish, keeping the bay very occupied and frantic as

they migrate south for the winter. Watch in early September as the smaller schools of mullet begin to show from the north heading south. As the month goes on, the numbers will increase and the whole show wraps up around mid-November. The best part is you don’t need a boat to be in the action—the fish are only a few feet from the shoreline on calm days with great water clarity. You’ll see a lot of the action! Be extremely cautious when swimming, for this is a dangerous time with many sharks in active feeding patterns. Early morning and late afternoon is the most dangerous time for accidental shark bites. Keep an eye out, looking to the north to see if any big schools of baitfish are coming. If so, exit the water and let the school pass. Be careful and enjoy this magical event. Please remember to catch and release. You can aid the health of our Indian River Lagoon by supporting organizations like the Florida Conservation Association and SOS, Save Our Sea Life. Keep Our Water Clean– Turtles Get Tumors, Too
O
ctober is just around the corner, which means sea turtle nesting season is coming to a close. Indian River County has experienced an average nesting year with more than 5,500 successfully laid loggerhead nests. By now, almost all of these have hatched and the little ones have made their way to the ocean where they will spend the next 15-20 years moving between oceanic waters and nearshore habitats (like the Indian River Lagoon) to eat and grow big and strong. It is during these early stages of life turtles are most threatened, not only by predators, but also disease. Fibropapillomatosis or “paps” is becoming ever more common in polluted waterways and is prominent in juvenile green turtles. Seeing as October is breast cancer awareness month, it is fitting to talk about paps, as this condition is caused by a herpes virus that causes tumors to grow on the turtle’s body, eyes, mouth and sometimes internally. Studies have been done locally for 15+ years to try and learn more about these tumors. 36

What we currently know is: • Tumors do not directly harm the animal but may prevent it from eating or may get caught on debris and cause the turtle to drown. • External tumors can be treated with lasers only at special care facilities • If the turtle is healthy enough, the tumors can recess/heal due to an immune response Local research groups have recorded paps on more than 50 percent of juvenile green turtles found in the Indian River Lagoon. This is the highest rate of paps for juvenile green turtles in Florida. So why is this happening? Well, researchers aren’t sure yet, but they have found a correlation with pollution. The more polluted a habitat is, the higher probability of finding a turtle with paps tumors. How can you help save turtles from getting these harmful tumors? • Choose not to fertilize during the rainy season (June-September) • Pick up pet waste in your yard • Do not dump trash into storm drains and waterways • Recycle as much as possible To learn more about local sea turtle conservation efforts, visit Coastal-Connections.org or find us on @CoastalConnectionsInc.

Take nothing for granted. “We were a happy healthy family on vacation with friends one minute, and the next minute, our world was shattering around us,” says Mandy Gaudreault. Mandy’s son, Brenton Fannin, 13, began having leg pain just below his knee a few months ago. He was diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter Disease, basically a type of “growing pains” where the patellar tendon is stretched too tight between the kneecap and tibia bone, causing pain. The doctor said to do what he was comfortable with and rest when needed. While vacationing on July 17, Brenton climbed out of the river and felt something in his leg pop. He was taken to the hospital where they said his leg was broken and something else was going on... He was transferred to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg where they did numerous tests and diagnosed him with Osteosarcoma, a rare

type of bone cancer in children. He has a tumor on his left tibia and the bone is very deteriorated. “When we got into the ambulance at our vacation rental we thought Brenton’s tendon may have torn,” Mandy explains. “The thought never crossed my mind that my child could have cancer. Take nothing for granted, because all can be changed in a heartbeat.” Brenton has 10 weeks of chemotherapy ahead of him, followed by surgery to remove the tumor and affected bone, then install a titanium prosthesis with magnetic ends that can expand as he grows. After that, he’ll have 18 more weeks of chemo. It’s likely he’ll need a second surgery to remove nodules in his lungs that are suspicious but cannot yet be confirmed or ruled out as cancer. Depending on what those nodules do and if they can be successfully surgically removed, additional chemo could follow. Brenton recently completed his first round of chemo and is resting at home, waiting for his cell counts to come back up before he starts the second round. As long as he stays fever-free, the family can remain at home until the next round of chemo. He was super excited to be reunited with his golden retriever, Duke, and is enjoying being in his own space after so much time spent in the hospital. He’s ready to fight this fight and get back to all of his favorite things, including hunting, fishing (especially bowfishing and spearfishing) and baseball. “We kept spirits high in the hospital by watching his favorite YouTube channels and planning future adventures,” Mandy says. “We’ve got lots to do when this is all over!” A Go Fund Me page was created to assist the family with expenses as Brenton travels from Vero Beach to St. Petersburg to receive his treatments and surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. “So many people have sent not only financial support but prayers, good vibes and well wishes,” Mandy says. “The money donated means that we have the ability to do whatever is best for Brenton and our family without having to stress about the financial aspect.” To support Brenton and his family in this fight, visit GoFundMe.com/uz95j-Brentons-Battle.

Chemo Doesn’t Have to Result in Hair Loss
A
cancer diagnosis is an arduous time for anyone. However, there are products on the market to help ease some of the side effects. CBD: A Natural Source of Healing
I
nformation within the world of medicine is continuously advancing. In a landscape filled with complicated technical terms, an abundance of specialists and an overwhelming amount of both good and bad options, it can often be a tough field to navigate. In fact, something considered taboo can, decades later, prove to be a valuable asset to health. Remember in the 1980s when doctors were convinced that fats should be avoided at all costs? Fast forward to 2018 where ‘healthy fats’ are all the rage and every Instagram feed is covered in photos of avocado toast. Point being that with time, information evolves and with that newfound knowledge comes a wave of new business. The current industry blowing up? Cannabidiol. Excuse me, what? Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is the major non-psychoactive component of cannabis. But unlike marijuana, which contains a high level of THC, CBD brings many possible medical benefits, minus the “high.” In layman’s terms, this is not pot and will not get you high, period. However, CBD does offer a potential big upside in being a natural source of healing. Ok, then what does CBD do? The case for CBD is that it can aid in numerous conditions ranging from anxiety to chronic pain to migraines to digestive issues. And that’s just scratching the surface of a long list of ailments CBD claims to help. One area where CBD has proven to be extremely beneficial is in pediatric epilepsy. It should be noted that both research and testing of CBD is ongoing within the medical community.

But is it legal? Because this distinct strand of CBD derives from hemp plants, which contain less than 0.3% THC, it is legal to purchase in Florida. Where to buy it? Currently there is a huge market for CBD Oil. But just because it is everywhere doesn’t mean it is a high quality product. ORAL CANCER: The BIG DEAL About a Little Exam

talk about oral cancer and how it can be diagnosed, treated and prevented.
What is oral cancer and where is it most commonly found? A: Similar to other types of cancers, oral cancers are abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells that occur in the oral cavity and throat. Although oral cancer can be found anywhere in the oral cavity, the most common location is the tongue. However, oral cancers can also be found on the gums, base of the tongue, or back of the throat.
What types of treatments are available for oral cancer? A: If the cancer is detected at an early stage, simple surgical removal of the cancer is the easiest treatment option. All too often though, detection of the cancer is not made until the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. This leads to other treatment therapies which could include chemotherapy and radiation therapy provided by an oncology team. As with other types of cancer, the best treatment approach is being proactive: eliminating risk factors and having routine screenings by your local dentist.
What are some of the biggest risk factors for oral cancer? A: There are some risk factors which cannot be controlled by the patient. A few of these include gender and age. Three of the top contributing risk factors to oral cancer include high exposure to UV light, tobacco use (both smoking and oral use), and excessive alcohol consumption. For individuals who smoke and drink excessive alcohol, they are approximately 70 percent more likely to have some form of oral cancer during their life.
How can I be proactive about detecting oral cancer? A: Self screenings and oral cancer exams conducted by a licensed dentist are the best ways to be pro-active. These exams typically take only 60 seconds and should be done when seeing your dentist for normal cleaning visits. What to Consider When Selecting an Insurance Agent

urn on the TV, scroll through your social media account - you will see advertisements from insurance agents who claim to be able to save you money, name your own price, or represent “all types” of insurance coverages. With so many available options to choose from, how can you make an informed decision regarding the people who will protect your home, life, health, or business?
Experience It’s important to verify an agent’s credentials, including when they were licensed by the state and the types of coverages they can legally represent. Simply having an agent’s license does not equate to qualified experience, so it’s important to identify the agent’s “niche” clientele and determine whether they have the ability to meet your specific needs. Market Access / Carrier Appointments An independent agency should be able to represent more than just a handful of insurance carriers. Open market access to multiple insurers allows the agent to “shop” your policies internally, which provides more cost and coverage options at renewal. Ask your agent to provide a list of active carrier appointments prior to obtaining insurance quotes for your home or business.
Referrals Request local client referrals, and contact each of them directly to discuss the agent’s industry knowledge, responsiveness, and customer service. Does the agent respond quickly to emails and/or voicemails? Do they provide evidence of coverage requests in a timely manner, and are they established in the local community as a reliable industry expert? Were they immediately accessible to file an insurance claim after a fire, auto accident, or hurricane. Personality Your insurance agent should not be selected because of catchy gimmicks, colorful mascots, or corporate bravado. This will be the industry professional that you will rely upon to create a unique insurance program which protects your home or business, so it’s important to maintain a level of comfort and trust at all times. Happy Camper
I
camped a lot in my 20s. I even did a six-week motorcycle trip in 1976 from Miami to Santa Fe, New Mexico, then up through Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas. I drove up into Canada and went across the country through Vermont and landed just in time to see the tall ships sail into New York City for our country’s bicentennial! I also camped in the Keys and the Blue Ridge Mountains. I guess there’s been a part of me, all of these years since, that wanted a little camper and a road trip. Who better to accompany me than my adventurous sister, Susan Johnson? She’s hardy and capable. After many days of instruction on how to use an Airstream trailer, off we went! Pulling a trailer is not for the faint of heart. Every time we hit the road I was white knuckling the drive. My sister was a champ and stayed focused as big rigs flew by, blowing us around 1-95! Thank God for our sway bar! Finally, we arrived at our beautiful destination: Stone Mountain, Georgia. I highly recommend this campground. We befriended our own personal concierge, Jerome, who dropped by daily to check on us. We cooked, slept, hiked, saw fireflies at night and visited with lots of friendly campers, but at the end of the day, you know what I found out? I’m just not a camper anymore! I’m more of a Ritz girl these days. So if you want an exciting road trip just let me know, because, if you’re interested in a barely used 2017 Airstream Bambi 16-foot Sport, it’s for sale and going to the highest bidder sometime soon!

I
A Mama’s Heart
t was 12 years ago my two boys began their hellish journey with addiction. Addiction is a family disease; a nightmare I never saw coming. Unfortunately, both of my boys were afflicted by this deadly disease. This is how “A Mamas Heart” came to be. I am a certified life coach helping other parents overcome being a victim. Initially, I was a victim, but over the years I’ve learned I’m not responsible for their poor judgement and bad mistakes. I often tell parents, “Love your children, just don’t love them to death.” My sons are 31 and 28 now. Both have been through many detoxes and treatment centers. At one point, my oldest son was sent to treatment by a judge and decided to check himself out early. Once I found out where he was, I dialed 911 and had him picked up and he was transferred back to jail. A week later, I went to visit him. I knew he would be completely detoxed by this time. Looking at me through the glass he started apologizing then quickly shifted to, “Did you put money on my books, mom?” I looked at him and smiled and said, “I sure did,” to which he replied, “It doesn’t show on the computer.” I said, “Do you see that TV up there, that orange jumpsuit you’re wearing and the three meals a day you’re eating? I’m a tax payer. Yes son, I put money on your books.” I hung up and walked out. My other son called one time and needed a ride from a treatment center he was planning on leaving early. I told him I would get him a ride. I was aware of a warrant that was issued for him. As soon as I hung up with him I called the sheriffs. They picked him up. He hated me for about three days. I look at this way: I may have just saved his life. I encourage parents that are enabling to seek help and take their lives back. I’ve witnessed firsthand how addiction can destroy relationships, marriages, homes, families, finances, etc. I’ve been set free from manipulation and sleepless nights. I thank God each and every day and I pray often for His protection over my sons. I realize I have no control over their addiction and I am not responsible for what happens in the future. I do believe there are great treatment centers available. s we transition from summer to fall and the heat starts to subside, we enter into the most active season of the year in the southeast. College Football Season. Whether you are staying in Florida or heading out somewhere else in the SEC, you’ve got some packing to do. Game weekends can involve exploring local shops, workouts, dinners with friends, tailgates, and after parties. All these activities mean you’ll need versatile but trendy outfits that will keep you comfortable and stylish all weekend. As your suitcase begins to fill up with cute dresses, tops, workout gear, and cosmetics you realize…shoes! To pack light, but remain on trend you need a few essential pieces of footwear in your bag. You know you will need some kind of all-weather boot in case of rain and your running shoes to get your workouts in. et’s be honest. What we see on social media is not reality. Sometimes it’s the result of 20 failed selfies and multiple filters. More often than not, it’s the highlight reel. That’s understandable. I don’t know many folks who care to air their dirty laundry and bad hair days for the world to see. But it also paints an idyllic picture for those scrolling from their couch to envy and endure pangs of FOMO (fear of missing out). And the person capturing the images is probably missing out on the experience and the moment, too concerned about getting the perfect shot. I recently had the opportunity to road trip from Colorado to California and back. I saw so many beautiful landscapes, seascapes, and took many photographs to document my journey. However, I also witnessed something at my very first stop that took me aback and changed the way I experienced the rest of the trip. While camping on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah, I meandered down to the beach to take in the sunset. I had to dip my toes in that famously mineral-laden water before an early alarm and a 10-hour drive to the next destination. As I made my way down to the beach, I noticed a woman being photographed by her husband as her two daughters looked on, begging for their attention. The woman had a scarf that looked like wings, her arms outstretched before the sunset. It was beautiful and she looked like an angel, but the reality truly upset me. This was an opportunity for family bonding amidst a beautiful sunset and the parents were ignoring their children, husband clearly annoyed she hadn’t found a suitable image, snapping photo after photo from multiple angles. “Mommy, look!” the younger daughter said as she cartwheeled in the sand. “Mommy’s busy,” she replied as she reviewed the images, still not satisfied. It broke my heart. I invite you to think about this the next time you travel, play with your children, or simply observe the sunset from your backyard. Sure, take a few photos, then put down the phone or camera and take it all in. Be present. These moments are fleeting and the memory in your mind will always be infinitely better. Your relationships with your family and friends will also be better for it. Explore with Kelly on

Fernweh: A Creative Journey
F
ernweh is a German word meaning homesick for a place you have never been; wanderlust. Traveling is one of the most rewarding life experiences. Along my journeys, I meet so many amazing people who inspire me daily. This inspiration manifests into a lasting desire to seek new experiences, learn new skills and delve into creative expression. Macramé is one medium that I use to answer these calls. You never know what you will learn, and recently, I needed to find an outlet for my creative energy. Bohemian décor has always been one of my favorite styles, and that’s how I decided to pick up the art of macramé. Each piece I create reminds me of a different adventure, and that’s how my business, Fernweh Fibers, was born. My passion for macramé is embodied in each piece of art I create. Every piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. I start each project with a certain design in mind, and it normally takes a shape of its own. This is what I love most about the creative process: you have to trust the flow.

When an item of mine sells, it brings me so much joy, because a piece of my travels continue on to a new home. I make a variety of designs, perfect for any home interior design. My hope is to create something that inspires you and helps you love the space you call home. Behind the Grand Piano
P
ianist John Ryan has performed at private clubs in Vero Beach for more than 35 years and has been the club pianist at Orchid Island Beach Club for the past seven years. Playing music in numerous styles from all genres, John is always receptive to audience requests and enjoys playing the songs that people really want to hear. Well-known for remembering everyone’s favorite tunes, John often honors an entrance by playing that person’s special song. An accomplished composer and songwriter, John is a prolific writer of music. A1A Surfboards
Locals with a Passion for Surfing
I
t all started in 1995, while I was in the Navy and living in Corpus Christi, Texas. My close buddy, Jeff Lewis and I ordered five blank surfboards from Clark Foam (which is no longer in business) as well as a 5-gallon jug of polyester resin and a roll of fiberglass cloth. We made our first batch of five boards, then we kept ordering more and started our own mini board factory. In 1999, I moved to Vero Beach and teamed up with David Glenn and Scott McGuire, who also had a passion for surfing and building things. We designed the A1A Surfboards logo and were just a bunch of dads hanging out in our garages building various boards for kids who dreamed of surfing. We thought it would be a great way to get our kids involved. As long as they were willing to help build the board, we made it happen. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve built kiteboards, fishboards, paddleboards for the Vero moms, and so many surfboards. To date, the total board count is more than 200. Jeff lives in Satellite Beach now and still makes boards (Lewis Designs). Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made many trips to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and El Salvador and we always take extra A1A boards to give away to the local kids who have no chance of buying a board of their own.

Is there anything out there to aid in surviving the drudgery and boredom of the proverbial hump day? The answer is yes. The solution? Nerds. Yes, Nerds! If you have yet to attend Nerd Nite Vero Beach, you’re missing out. On the last Wednesday of every month, some of Vero Beach’s most interesting and curious locals gather to enjoy a cocktail while listening to guest speakers discuss a topic. The theme, as well as the location, change from month to month. In the span of an hour, there are three 10-minute talks with subjects ranging from art to Africa; cannabis to comic books; arachnids to aphrodisiacs. The Nerds cover everything. Run by Wendy Shafranski, along with Flynn Fidgeon and Alex McGee, Nerd Nite Vero Beach celebrated its one-year anniversary in July. When she was initially asked to step in and run the event, Wendy was hesitant. “My biggest concern was time. But I loved the concept and wanted to make it even better. I’ve been surprised by how many interesting people live in the area.” Some of Wendy’s favorite presenters include Robert Graffam, a travel photographer and Claudette Roche, an accent coach. “We had Entomologist PhD Stephen Lapointe present on the sex lives of bees. He had the audience laughing, grossed out and mesmerized all at the same time. It was basically a dirtier Fifty Shades of Grey, but about bugs.” This movement isn’t just happening in Vero. Nerd Nite is a world-wide event spanning 90 other cities, encouraging people to get together to just, well, talk. “I think it connects people, gives them opportunities to share their passions, guests learn something new and it’s fun,” Wendy said. The event is also great for local businesses. Kilted Mermaid, Orchid Island Brewery, Bungalow Bar, Post & Vine and Grind & Grape have all participated. Each establishment has been both receptive to the event and extended warm welcomes to return. Alden and Val Bing, owners of OIB, are all for it. “We love that it’s a natural forum for people to come together, communicate what they care about and feel no pressure of being criticized. As business owners, it’s great to be associated with that kind of vibe and mentality.” There is certainly an authenticity to Nerd Nite Vero Beach. Sure, it’s a standing date on the calendar to go out with friends and enjoy a drink. It also provides a spotlight on those unique individuals who have wide ranging interests and whom also proudly call Vero home. As Wendy puts it, “It’s book club without the work of reading a book. Jumpstart Antique Car Shows
T
he Jumpstart Antique Car Show started almost 25 years ago. It has been held in West Palm, Jupiter, Fort Pierce and the last 5 years in Vero Beach. The first show had a total of 13 cars and now it has grown to an average of more than 300 cars. It is a licensed non-profit 501c3 charity organization. With the help of sponsors including Velde Ford, Comcast, iHeart radio, Cintas, Vero Beach Dry Cleaners, Gannett Newspapers, and hundreds of volunteers, it has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity throughout the years. Future events will be benefit the Vietnam Veterans and the Elks. Additional shows have been added for the St Lucie County Sheriffs PAL in 2019, to help keep kids off the streets. The shows are funded entirely by sponsors which means the entire proceeds of the show go to charity. The gorgeous antique cars in the show come from throughout Florida, from the Florida Keys to Jacksonville. The show would not go on without the support of the car owners.

An Airstream with Endless Possibilities
C
reated by a husband and wife team looking for a creative way to get out of the office and into the community, Hitched Photo Lounge evolved from a passion for photography, a love for all things vintage, and an entrepreneurial spirit. “I bought the Airstream on a whim one night after work,” said Tina Barnett, owner of Hitched Photo Lounge. “I was looking for a new challenge and after months of thinking up different concepts, the idea to turn the Airstream into a mobile photo booth and lounge just clicked.” Purchased from an Airstream collector in Kansas, the 1966 Airstream Globetrotter made its way across the country to start a new life. After a year of renovations, which included gutting the interior, adding wood floors, installing an air conditioner, painting the walls, and polishing the iconic aluminum, the trailer made its debut at an event at Vintage Home Collective in Boca Raton, and it’s been traveling around ever since. “We were lucky to meet a great group of creative professionals though Instagram who believed in us from the start,” said Tina, who owns the business with her husband, Mike Barnett. “One event led to another and through word of mouth, the Airstream has been attending events, weddings, and photo shoots from Key West to Tampa.” Based in Fort Lauderdale, the 19-foot trailer features an open concept that can be transformed into a variety of options. When used as a photo 78

booth, the trailer offers a touch screen photo booth kiosk, studio lighting, seating, high-end props and a photo printing station. For outdoor events, the trailer can be converted into a lounge with furniture, a bar cart and decor. The charming interior is the perfect place for brides to get ready, grooms to kickback, or guests to hang out during cocktail hour. Hitched Photo Lounge can also be used as a vintage prop for photo and video shoots, a mobile salon, pop-up shop, cocktail bar, or dessert station. “We’re in the business to make people smile, so no request is too big or too small.” Available to hire in South Florida, as well as Naples and Tampa, Hitched Photo Lounge offers packages in two, four, or six hour increments. YOUR AGING DOG CARING FOR YOUR AGING DOG In many ways, dogs are just like people. We care for them as we would any family member, supporting their changing health needs as they age. Like people, every dog is different, with a distinct personality, temperament, and favorite activities. The steps you take to keep them well into their later years also depends on their size, breed and existing health concerns. But despite those differences, there are some general things to keep in mind as your loved one grows older.
IS YOUR DOG A SENIOR? Most large-breed dogs age more quickly than small breeds. On average, small-breed dogs are seniors at about age 7, while large breeds reach that milestone at about 5 to 6 years of age. A small or medium-sized dog weighing under 50 lbs. at adulthood is approximately 44 to 47 human years old by the time he’s seven. A large dog over 50 lbs. is about 50-56. Since canines age faster than people, your 10-year-old pooch may be about 56-60 or 66-78 in human years. Of course, these numbers are just estimates to give you an idea of the general phase of your loved one’s aging. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that dogs of all breeds can remain healthy and active well into later life, with good care from their guardians.

WHAT TO EXPECT AS YOUR DOG AGES Because canines age more quickly than people, the senior years can sneak up on guardians. It may seem like all of a sudden their companion is moving more slowly or doesn’t seem to see or hear as well as he once did. As he gets older, your dog is experiencing changes on both the inside and outside. As his joints and hips don’t work as well and his coat becomes more grey, his organs are also declining and immune system is less effective. While it’s always important to keep up with veterinary visits to monitor your dog’s health to rule out chronic illnesses or ailments, here are some common signs of old age:

As a guardian, there are many steps you can take to keep your dog happy and content as his needs evolve and change. Because it may be challenging for him to get up and down stairs, you may want to create a space for him to sleep that does not put pressure on his joints. You may want to put in a ramp, raise feeding bowls to make it easier for your dog to eat, or buy an orthopedic bed. Your dog may become more of a indoor canine, with fewer sprints or vigorous ball-chasing sessions. Exercise is still vitally important in order to maintain mobility. Daily walks, taken at a slower pace than in the past, help your canine to stay active. If your pooch seems sore to the touch or has great difficulty moving, he may have arthritis, a condition you should discuss with your veterinarian. A proper diet, suitable for older dogs, is crucial to your dog’s overall health. As the immune system becomes weaker, it is harder for dogs to fight off infections. For that reason, the AVMA recommends parasite control. As well, maintaining a healthy weight reduces some of the pressure on aging joints, hips and bones. To improve the immune system and overall physical health, some guardians choose to provide a diet that supports a healthy gut. Some guardians notice their beloved canine has some cognitive decline as he gets older. You can discuss these changes with your veterinarian, and support your pet’s mental acuity with interactive attention.
Like people, many pets may benefit from foods and supplements that support their changing health needs as they grow older. Specifically, many guardians are turning to probiotics to support a healthy immune system and joint supplements to promote physical well-being in their canine companions. In 2015, Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences reported that several studies showed that certain strains of probiotic bacteria held the potential to improve canine health. Specifically, the bacteria may be promising in preventing stress diarrhea and may promote antiinflammatory properties. In 2017, the Cummings Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University reported that veterinary diets designed to reduce joint pain had some documented success. These diets typically contained such ingredients as glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 fatty acids. In consultation with their veterinarian, who can assess the potential role for supplements in a senior dog’s health plan, many guardians may therefore opt to try these ingredients to support their loved one’s well-being.
WORKING WITH YOUR DOG As your dog ages, his needs with change. As his guardian, you probably know and understand him better than anyone else. Working with a veterinary professional, you can introduce concrete measures to help your canine have a comfortable, happy old age, making your years with him as joyful as possible.

Be alert to signs of exhaustion and dehydration such as drooling, heavy panting, lethargy and loss of appetite. Allow Fido time to recover from activities by providing a place for rest. A blanket or dog bed set up in a cool shaded spot with a bowl of cool water, and on really hot days a portable fan, will keep him happy and healthy. Be certain Fido is up to date on flea and tick prevention as well as all recommended vaccines and you’ll both be prepared for a fun excursion. Invest in his training. The time spent establishing a set of commands that may save Fido’s life is invaluable. Be sure his vocabulary of understanding includes NO; COME; STAY or WAIT; and a release command such as DROP for safety from the inherent dangers of the outdoors. With thoughtful preparation for the surprises of Florida’s weather and a vigilant eye on Fido, you can both enjoy the great outdoors this time of year!

any times when I ask a client who they want as their Trustee they think for a moment and simply say their oldest child. Sometimes they mention the child who they feel is most dependable. Seldom do they think about this at
any length. Many clients do not take the time to think about when this becomes essential. That is when or if they should become disabled. A Trust is invaluable when someone becomes unable to act on their own behalf. If they become unable to pay their own bills and handle their investments or finances, it becomes essential that they have someone that can perform these tasks. Our children usually have their own families to manage or are deeply involved in their careers. Other problems might arise with sibling rivalries or simply jealousy. It is better for a professional to run the Trust in any of these instances. A corporate Trustee is accustomed to looking ahead at your future needs, investing towards those goals and managing requests for money from successor beneficiaries. These can be significant problems. My suggestion is to start thinking about your future needs when deciding on a Trustee. You do not want to end up in a situation where you need to appoint a Trustee and you are not prepared to make that decision. You may start by checking with your local bank and see what they offer.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their
territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

After the very intense months of July and August, September and October should feel a bit smoother. Not a whole lot smoother, but we are finally out of the eclipse season, so it will be calmer to a degree. Everyone is feeling anxiety percolating under the surface, so the trick to riding theses celestial weather patterns is to remember it’s just weather. You deal with it and move on. There are full moons on both September and October 24. There are days that amplify energies, so make sure you focus on what you desire, and not what you want to reduce in your life. ARIES: You will feel very grounded at the beginning of September, so
people may be coming to you for solid support. Your job is to listen and not try to fix anyone’s life. Just being in your presence will suffice. September 8 is not the date to get into an argument with a loved one. Things may be said that you will later regret. Around September 25, you want to avoid stressful situations.
