LIFE

WELL SAID

Seeing the world from a bird’s eye view changes your perspective— it literally broadens your horizons. When I’m out flying at sunrise with Michael and Sheena at Treasure Coast Seaplanes, or when it’s a crisp blue-sky kind of day, just looking down at the earth makes me realize how small we really are in the big scheme of things. It’s a gentle reminder that it’s a big blue world out there! Flying is a great way to see the world, too! It gets us to new destinations quickly—maybe not g-force fast like flying in an F14 as the Blue Angels do, but it beats driving any day! In this issue we hope you find inspiration and admiration for all the men and women who share a passion for aviation. Our Vero Beach Airport is hosting the famed Blue Angels this year at the air show on April 21—save the date, it’s a must see. Make sure you read our story about what it takes to become a Blue Angel and how they share their passion for flight! Did you know that about only 4 percent of aviators are women? Make sure you check out our stories on women in aviation! We’ve packed this issue with great stories that we hope you enjoy reading as much as we enjoyed discovering them. From leisure trips on jet planes and business travel, to helicopters and seaplanes, flying is an awesome way to get there!

Happy jet setting!

ABOUT OUR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Flying High This issue was amazing to shoot and put together. Soaring into the blue in the various aircraft for our photo shoots was so much fun and it was so beautiful to see our community from the sky! Our cover photo was shot by Joe Semkow, who continues to amaze me with his passion and zest for life. All our contributors help make Portfolio the best it can be! I am so grateful for my tribe of writers, photographers, our continued support from friends and family, and most of all, the words of encouragement from our readers and advertisers. Thank you for being a part of this publication! My mission has always been to showcase the beauty that surrounds us with great content and beautiful photography. Reilly Koontz has joined us as our Insta-fabulous social media associate after interning for the past two summers. Joining us as a new photographer is Cana Davidson from “Cana Rose Photography.” She creates dreamy images as a wedding and portrait photographer and is a welcome addition to our team. A special thanks to Sheena and Michael Hoover, owners of Treasure Coast Seaplanes for flying us around for all our photo shoots! The cover plane is owned by Tom Soodsma, a retired Navy pilot. Tom has owned this beautifully restored 1955 Beechcraft T34 Military Trainer since 2005. We appreciate Tom allowing us to fly in it, piloted by Sheena Hoover for our cover shot.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A BLUE ANGEL? The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach. A total of 17 officers voluntarily serve with the Blue Angels. Each year, the team typically selects three tactical (fighter or fighter/attack) jet pilots, two support officers and one Marine Corps C-130 pilot to relieve departing members. The Chief of Naval Air Training selects the “Boss,” the Blue Angels Commanding Officer. The Boss must have at least 3,000 tactical jet flight-hours and have commanded a tactical jet squadron. The Commanding Officer flies the Number 1 jet. The Chief of Naval Air Training also selects the “XO,” the Blue Angels Executive Officer. XO is a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) and must have at least 1,250 tactical jet flight-hours. Career-oriented Navy and Marine Corps jet pilots with an aircraft carrier qualification and a minimum of 1,250 tactical jet flight-hours are eligible for positions flying jets Number 2 through 7. The Events Coordinator, Number 8, is a NFO or a Weapons Systems Officer who meets the same criteria as Numbers 2 through 7. The Marine Corps pilots flying the C-130T Hercules aircraft, affectionately known as “Fat Albert,” must be aircraft commander qualified with at least 1,200 flight hours. Career-oriented officers specializing in maintenance, administration, aviation medicine, public affairs and supply fill support positions. The Blue Angels base their selection of officers on professional ability, military bearing and communication skills. Blue Angels officers are well-rounded representatives of their fleet counterparts. Officers typically serve two years with the team. Blue Angels officers return to the fleet after their tours of duty. The elite U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron recently announced that the Blue Angels will perform at the Vero Beach Air Show, April 21-22 at the Vero Beach Regional Airport. BLUE SKIES OVER VERO BEACH Vero Beach has a long tradition as an aviation community that dates back to World War II, when its airport served as Naval Air Station Vero Beach from 1942 to 1946. After the airport was decommissioned, it was turned over to the City of Vero Beach for municipal use. Since then, Vero Beach has grown in population and enterprise. The airport has stood solidly through the years as a fixture within the community that has inspired generations of aviation enthusiasts to look skyward and many others to pursue their dreams of flight. In the early 1990s, the Vero Beach Exchange Club organized and hosted several airshows that highlighted military and civilian performers. These air shows were highly successful community events. In 2011, after a short hiatus in regularly scheduled air shows, a small group of people consisting of members from the local Exchange Clubs, the Veterans Council of Indian River County and the Vero Beach Airport formed Vero Beach Airshow, Inc. With a passion to serve our community and a love of country, the mission of Vero Beach Air Show, Inc. was clear from the beginning: the resurrected Vero Beach Air Show would become a charity fundraising event benefitting the local Exchange Clubs’ collaborative efforts to prevent child abuse in Indian River County, and benefitting the Veterans Council of Indian River County, another charity organization that provides assistance to local veterans. In 2012, Vero Beach Air Show, Inc. obtained its 501(c)(3) status and charted the course for the Vero Beach Air Show in 2013. In 2014, for the first time ever in the skies over Vero Beach, the United States Navy Blue Angels roared into town and Vero Beach had its first major air show featuring a world-renowned jet demonstration team. The show was a fantastic success 20

accomplished through thousands of hours donated by the air show board, airport personnel, volunteers, and the entire community. The Vero Beach Air Show was re-born! Vero Beach Air Show Inc. is proud to continue the air show tradition in Indian River County, bringing the nation’s top military and civilian performers to Vero Beach every two years, and continuing its mission to raise money to support the prevention of child abuse and help our local veterans.

WORLD CLASS AVIATOR AND FORMER MILITARY LEADER HELPS VERO BEACH AIRPORT REACH NEW HEIGHTS Retired Air Force Colonel and former NASA Helicopter Pilot Carlos Halcomb has spent most of his life traveling the world. He has lived and worked in far-flung locations, steadily climbing in rank while building a resume that reads like a profile for a character in a military adventure movie. He has led thousands, planned and executed special operations missions with U.S. Navy SEALs and U.S. Army Special Forces/Rangers, logged thousands of helicopter flight hours and completed eight combat tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia/Croatia and the Philippines. He’s been honored by U.S. Presidents and dined with heads of state. And that’s just skimming the surface. To say he’s well-respected and much sought after as a military and aviation expert is an understatement. Since retirement in 2014, Carlos has fielded job offers from around the world. From 2015-2016, he was a NASA helicopter pilot at the Kennedy Space Center, a dream job allowing him to fly daily. However, he missed being home in Vero Beach. The pull to be home is what led him to his current position as the Airport Administrative Manager at the Vero Beach Regional Airport. Today, he serves as part of the airport staff, working with the Vero Beach City Council and the airport commission. He enjoys being involved in the daily operations and helping shape the airport’s growth. While not working, Carlos, 54, spends his time with his wife, Doris Ferres-Halcomb, a local dentist, and his family. His two daughters and

their families live within walking distance, his aged “aunt” who helped raise him now lives with him, and his father lives nearby. He’s an active member of the Indian River County Veteran’s Council and the Military Officers’ Association. He loves being a low-key family man, extremely active in his grandchildren’s lives. It’s a role he doesn’t take for granted. “It’s the simple things that bring me joy,” he says. “I enjoy taking my grandson out boating on the river, grilling on our back patio while my family swims and visits, and volunteering in our community.” Carlos says that when he fell in love with his wife in 2003, as he was passing through on his way to a tour of duty in Morocco, Poland and the Philippines, he didn’t know he would also fall in love with Vero Beach. “We could live anywhere in the world. But I love this place,” he said. “I encouraged my children and father to move here. It’s my home. I truly feel that Vero Beach chose me.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH QUALITY AVIATION TRAINING For nearly two decades, a Central Florida company has been quietly influencing the way the world extracts fossil fuels, transports ill or injured medical patients, produces agricultural products, builds and maintains critical infrastructure and even protects national borders. Based out of Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, United States Aviation Training Solutions Inc. has trained thousands of professional and military helicopter pilots from more than 120 nations, and is globally recognized as a premier provider of quality based aviation training solutions. With an alumni base that dates back more than 30 years and spans the globe, you will find USATS graduates operating safely in nearly every sector of the helicopter aviation industry. Their story began in 1987 when Patrick Corr founded Helicopter Adventures Inc. in Concord, California. In 2007, following an expansion and relocation to Titusville, HAI would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Bristow Group, Inc. and, after rebranding as Bristow Academy, spend the next 10 years leaving an indelible mark on the quality and standards of the helicopter pilot training industry. ”It has been an interesting and rewarding journey” says current USATS Director, Todd Smith, who joined the original business in 1996 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. “The aviation training industry has gone through a remarkable transformation in the 20+ years that I have been a part of it, but the most interesting time to me was during the mid to late 2000s.” Smith

Written and Photography Provided by SABINA BAKER

24

goes on to describe how a shortage of professionally trained, career-oriented helicopter pilots developed during this time as many of the former Vietnam War era pilots were reaching retirement age and exiting the profession at an unprecedented rate. “The resulting impact was an overwhelming attrition rate at the air carrier level, that simply could not be overcome through existing commercially available training portals.” During this time organizations like The Bristow Group (one of the largest operators of commercial helicopters, globally) developed dedicated pilot training programs that were geared toward the career-oriented, professionally minded student helicopter pilot. Today, the airline industry is facing a similar dilemma as the overwhelming shortage of quality trained entry level pilots threatens to cripple the industry. “The numbers are astounding,” says Smith. Under new ownership since November 2017, USATS has built upon its history, experience and knowledge in training professional helicopter pilots and is now turning some of its focus to training professional fixed-wing (airplane) pilots for the airline industry. “This is another opportunity for our team make a difference,” says Smith “and nothing is more rewarding to me than to know that what we do every day could ultimately save a life, or even lots of lives.” USATS’ dedicated team of professionals both on the ground and in the air bring their combined experience to create a learning environment second to none. It’s an environment and culture that’s designed for the career-minded aviator. The focus of USATS—and chosen training model—is the training, mentoring and career support of those desiring to become a professional aviator, not just a pilot. USATS is committed to providing the highest quality aviation training in the safest, most efficient manner possible. Learn more at USATSolutions.com.

PARAMEDICS WITH WINGS You’ve probably seen the First Flight helicopter flying high above Vero’s beaches and wondered what the buzz is all about. We were in complete awe when we met up with these real-life Wonderwomen, Prudence Meads and Mim Strote, the paramedics aboard First Flight. We sat down with Prudence to discuss the high flying, life-saving career of flight paramedics. Q: Tell us about your role at First Flight. PM: I’m a Flight RN/Paramedic and my fellow crew member, Mim Strote, is a Flight Paramedic. Flight Nurses on First Flight have to be dual certified as paramedics. We respond to scene calls and primarily serve Brevard and North Indian River County. We also respond to interfacility calls and transport patients from one hospital to another across the state. These patients are often critical and complicated (on ventilators, balloon pumps, critical IV medications, arterial lines, etc.). First Flight has been serving Brevard and Indian River Counties since 1988 and will celebrate its 30th Anniversary in June.

Q: How did you arrive at this career? PM: I often considered medevac throughout my career, but the only program I ever wanted to fly for was First Flight. I was working in Sacramento at the time and had just passed the Certified Emergency Nurse exam that day. I was job hunting and matched the qualifications, so I thought I would go for it.

Q: Is this a tough career path to break into? PM: The road to work here is long. Our crew consists of a Pilot, Flight Paramedic and Flight RN/Paramedic. For Flight Nurses, a minimum of three years of critical care, emergency department or rotor wing experience, and a minimum of 500 hours of Paramedic experience in a service that runs 911 pre-hospital calls is required. Paramedic 911 experience is paramount. There’s a certain way that paramedics think and are trained that is beneficial to this profession. The kind of experience a person gets working on a scene can’t be replicated in a hospital setting. We have to carry multiple required certifications including current AHA-BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP and TNCC (nurses), PHTLS (paramedics), CEN or CCRN for RNs. Current Florida Certification as a Paramedic and Air Core Crew Curriculum is also required.

Q: What do you enjoy most about this career? PM: This job is an Emergency Medical Services job, first and foremost. I started my career as a paramedic (with Mim as my first partner!) and between emergency room nursing and paramedicine, I’ve honestly always loved being a paramedic more. I love the dynamics of critical care medicine and aviation, and not being inside a building for 12 hours a day. I feel continually challenged and have to always keep striving to keep up with the brilliant people I work with.

FLIGHT SUITED FOR SUCCESS Eighty years ago, an innovative businessman with an obsession for flight aspired to share his passion with the common man. William Piper believed everyone should have the opportunity to experience the freedom of flight. In 1930, Piper purchased assets of the Taylor Brothers Aircraft Manufacturing Company in Rochester, New York, then bought out C.G. Taylor in 1935. Piper Aircraft Corporation began and his dream took flight with the little yellow Piper Cub. Since then, Piper Aircraft has produced more than 144,000 planes in 180 models certified. Like any organization, Piper Aircraft has experienced both profitable times and trying chapters, but ultimately the success of the company is attributed to a recognizable, trusted brand and the team behind it. Teamwork is implemented in all of Piper’s departments, including that of Flight Test. Test flying dates back to World War I, beginning at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in the United Kingdom. By the 1920s, test flying was further developed by the RAE and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Beyond daredevils and barnstormers testing new aircraft, aeronautical researchers realized they needed to rely on a quantifiable, scientific approach to advances in aviation. U.S. military test pilots seemed the reasonable solution. In the 1950s, NACA became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration: NASA. As research was conducted on aircraft stability and handling qualities, test flying evolved into a more qualitative scientific and well-respected profession. It takes a unique individual to command the controls of any machine deemed “experimental.” Nicholas Schiavone, flight test engineer, and James Duncan, test pilot, work in the engineering Flight Test department at Piper Aircraft. Schiavone has worked at Piper for almost five years; Duncan, 22 years. Flight test engineers manage the overall analysis of the data collected during test flights, working closely with the test pilots who fly the experimental aircraft. Experimental test pilots are the aviators flying the new or modified aircraft in specific, measurable maneuvers that are being evaluated.

28

March-April 2018

Schiavone started as a design engineer before getting a pilot rating. When a job opened in Piper’s Flight Test, he eagerly jumped at the opportunity to experience the product firsthand and offer design suggestions. “Working in Flight Test allows me to bridge the gap between being a pilot and an engineer,” Nick explains. “I get to do a bit of both and work with many different groups [at Piper], which keeps my job interesting.” The objectives of the profession are compelling for the advancement of aviation, but at what cost? With the progression of aircraft technology, coupled with improved ground-testing and simulated aircraft performance, the associated risks of today’s experimental aviation have decreased. Modern technology gives pilots the advantage of more viable information in advance, allowing them to make the necessary adjustments to fly with “acceptable risk.” Piper Aircraft prides itself on the safety measures employed to further abate any unnecessary risks. However, even contemporary piloting of experimental aircraft remains inherently more dangerous than many other types of flying. “Trusting the pilots and pilots trusting us is a large part of it,” says Schiavone. “Safety is all about planning and being prepared, and that’s central to what we do every flight, every day. We trust the integrity of the aircraft we fly.” “A lot of our time is spent mitigating any risks Flight Test might have,” Duncan adds. “We spend an inordinate amount of time identifying the hazards in a particular test and mitigating them to an acceptable level.” Regulations define what tests have to be done and the design of the aircraft dictates which tests have to be completed. “There’s a perception that flight test is exciting all the time, but there’s definitely discomfort involved,” Schiavone explains. “For example, the avionics cooling test requires us to maintain the cabin at 95 degrees and fly for an extended time. Many components in the aircraft are disabled to make it a worst-case scenario. We ensure the components in the cabin don’t exceed manufacturers temperature limits.”

“It’s like sitting in your car in the heat with the windows up,” Duncan adds. “You can’t be claustrophobic and have this job.” When they aren’t working on certifying a new product, the team focuses on existing product improvement. When they aren’t flying, they’re planning for the next test and reporting on previous tests for compliance and safety. “Piper has been successful for a long time because we build a pilot’s airplane,” says Schiavone. “We make a complex machine simple–simple from the operator’s standpoint,” says Duncan. Piper delivers a machine that’s advanced but intuitive, thanks to the team working behind the scenes, ultimately culminating with the performance of Flight Test. The company’s success cannot be attributed to just the men and women flying the aircraft. “I think we’re all here because we love aviation,” Duncan adds. TREASURE COAST AIR SERVICES: SEAPLANES, HANGARS, TRAINING, AND MORE Treasure Coast Air Services is a family owned and operated Fixed Base Operator located on the north ramp of the Vero Beach Regional Airport. Owned by Michael and Sheena Hoover, TCAS is truly a family affair. Janet, Michael’s mother, takes care of security and is the office attendant, while also helping with child care for the Hoover’s three children, Zoifa and twins Hutchinson and Emmeline. Ann, Sheena’s mother, is a CPA and also helps with child care, while Sheena’s father Lyle serves as business advisor, and of course, child care, too! In addition to being the home base for Treasure Coast Seaplanes with training and tours, TCAS provides aircraft hangar storage, Avgas 100LL fuel, flight training, aircraft rental, courtesy Jeep Wrangler for visiting pilots, aviation themed playground, and serves as an event venue. They offer self-service aircraft fueling 24-hours a day, plus full-service aircraft fueling at TCAS or anywhere on the airfield during business hours. The airport will soon be adding a new taxiway extension and resurfacing the north ramp to make accessing TCAS by aircraft even faster.

Get Lifted with Zero Pressure TCAS’ alter ego, “Bernoulli’s” (as in Bernoulli’s Lift Principal, an aviation term) will soon be selling beer and wine on its covered deck. Their motto is “Get lifted with zero pressure.” Enjoy this great location with quick access from U.S. 1 and the island. The TCAS facility includes an office/pilot’s lounge, covered deck, 8,000 square foot hangar, and ramp space. Built in the 60s and 70s, the property was formerly the airport director’s office and airport maintenance storage.

“It looked like a penitentiary!” Michael describes. “The airport director wanted a tear down and rebuild on this property. It took a lot of work to convince him otherwise.” The Hoovers spent 12 months renovating the hangar and office top to bottom, inside and out. “Our design incorporates elemental materials, colors, textures, greenery, sounds, and scents to evoke a sensory experience,” Sheena says. “We purchased from local companies as much as possible.” Michael and Dan Hand completed most of the renovations, including custom woodwork throughout the office and deck spaces. The new covered deck was constructed by a local family business, JM Reid Construction, and will house the new bar, Bernoulli’s. “We wanted our facility to reflect us and cultivate the adventurous spirit of aviation,” Sheena explains. “We’re focused on creating a niche market which invites the public to experience the strong aviation community present in Vero Beach and encourage pilots to make Vero a repeat destination for business and pleasure.” Learn more at FlyTCS.com.

PREPARE TO BE SPOILED AT CORPORATE AIR, INC. It all started when my high school mechanical drawing teacher, Don Denz, asked if I wanted to go for a flight in his Cessna 172. Since then, the last 42 years of my career have been focused on my future in aviation. I attended Riverside School of Aeronautics and after graduating, immediately was hired by Chautauqua Airlines in Jamestown, New York. Shortly thereafter, I accepted a position in the company to manage the maintenance of three Beechcraft 99 Airliners in Vero Beach. After 10 years, the company moved out of the Florida market, and I decided to stay and start Corporate Air Inc. in 1985. I took my savings and built my first hangar with one employee, a.k.a. “Me.” With the support of family, friends, dedicated employees and amazing customers, we have grown to four hangars and the most luxurious Fixed Base Operator (FBO) terminal building at the Vero Beach Regional Airport. The Sea Turtles Are Back!

L

oggerhead sea turtles are the most common “living dinosaur” nesting on Indian River County beaches. In 2016, we were lucky enough to experience a record number of loggerhead nests (almost 8,000) thanks to local, state and federal conservation efforts, and of course, public support. This protected species averages four feet long, weighing up to 300 lbs., and lays four to six nests every other year. This means 2018 could be a really big year for Indian River County! Beginning March 1, the beaches of Indian River County will begin to change. These living dinosaurs will migrate from their foraging grounds, ranging from the Caribbean up to Massachusetts, where they feed on conch, horseshoe crabs, shrimp and blue crab. Daily sea turtle nesting monitoring will begin March 1 to identify, protect, and collect scientific data for all nests laid on the beaches. There are many great ways for residents and guests to ensure our beaches are turtle friendly and ready for the beginning of this significant season. • Pick up trash • Recycle or refuse to use single-use plastic • Fill in holes on the beach Interested in volunteering • Remove furniture from the beach at night or donating to local sea turtle • Turn off beachfront lights protection efforts? Check out • Use red flashlights on the beach at night Indian River County’s • Don’t let your dog dig newest coastal non-profit at • Scare away birds from hatchlings • Say no to beach bonfires Coastal-Connections.org. • Observe nesting turtles from afar • Enjoy nature as nature! Businesses are encouraged to get involved in sea turtle conservation. Those who join the Turtle Friendly Business program pledge to uphold turtle friendly standards by providing sea turtle education material; advertising local sea turtle activities like turtle digs, walks, and releases; promoting recycling and cleaning of trash from beaches; preventing obstructions to nesting; and complying with turtle friendly lighting rules. Look for the turtle friendly sticker around town. To learn more about the county’s sea turtle management program, visit IRCGov.com/coastal.

A Frightful Invasion

H

ave you ever heard of someone spearing a lion underwater? It may sound like a bizarre statement until you realize they are referring to the lionfish (Pterois volitans), an invasive species of fish swarming around the coast of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. Lionfish are a gorgeous tropical fish originally found in the Indo-Pacific, and have been sold world-wide as aquarium pets for many years. While it is unknown how exactly the lionfish were introduced to the Caribbean, it is widely presumed that they were released from aquariums in the early 1980s. Once in the wild, the lionfish flourished in these new waters because they had no predators that could devour their 18 venomous spines. Besides their prickly exterior, lionfish pose a deeper threat to our coastal waters. With no predators balancing their population, the lionfish species has grown into the BILLIONS (females release around two million eggs per year), and they have an enormous appetite for our native fish. They can consume prey more than half their size and favor fish and invertebrates that are ecologically and commercially important along the Florida’s coastline. The imbalance has caused our important fish populations to decline while the lionfish population is ever increasing. Now is the time to restore balance and put a halt to the most rapid marine invasion in history. WE must be the predator! Humans are the best hope for eradicating this pest. Lionfish may be more difficult to catch than other sport game, but the environmental impact is great, and the lionfish tastes delicious! In order to promote lionfish hunting, every year there are multiple derbies or tournaments for lionfish spearfishing and catching. 36

Indian River’s local event, the Sebastian Lionfish Fest is the second largest lionfish event in the state and it’s only its third year. SLF is hosted annually around Florida’s Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day in May. The event is not only a lionfish derby, but also a cook-off between eight well known restaurants in the area, and an educational opportunity for citizens to learn why lionfish are a danger to our coastal ecosystems. Plus, all proceeds go to the non-profit host, Coastal Connections, Inc., which will continue to serve and protect our coastal habitats with all funds raised through the event. Join us Sunday, May 20 at Capt. Hiram’s from 12-4 p.m. to taste the delicious lionfish, served eight different ways. If you are a diver, help reduce the population of lionfish in our local waters and sign up to join the derby and hunt for lionfish both Saturday and Sunday (May 19-20), with $3,200 in cash prizes! FLYING LOW

TO SAVE YOU FROM MOSQUITOS

T

here’s a war going on outside your door and a small army has taken to the land, air, and water to fight the good fight against…mosquitoes. The Indian River Mosquito Control District was the first mosquito control program created in Florida in 1925. Property taxes fund the district’s operations to control mosquitoes, protecting the health and welfare of the county’s residents and visitors. There are 3,500+ species of mosquitoes around the world; in Indian River County, there are 50+ species, but we regularly encounter about 12. Only female mosquitoes bite, using blood to develop her eggs. The mosquito life-cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The immature stages of mosquitoes are aquatic. IRMCD uses a combination of techniques including source reduction (eliminating habitats where mosquitoes can lay their eggs), larviciding (the application of chemicals to kill mosquito larvae or pupae by ground or aerial treatments) and adulticiding (chemical applications to kill adult flying and biting mosquitoes). IRMCD’s staff includes 28 individuals, nine of whom have the responsibility of inspecting marshes along the lagoon and treating them from all-terrain-vehicles when mosquito larvae are present. Inspection and treatment information is recorded in a computerized database and when large areas need treatment, a local flying service— Southeastern Aerial Crop Services of Fort Pierce—is contracted to make these applications using a fixed-wing aircraft. From the air, the larvicides are applied in a granular form to penetrate the vegetation, accessing the water where the mosquito larvae occur. Chances are, you’ve probably seen “The Mosquito Man,” Dave Ray, flying his bright yellow plane along the Indian River Lagoon at a low altitude with speeds averaging 150 MPH. Dave drops a granular larvicide that’s harmless to humans but deadly to mosquitoes. Throughout the past five years, an average of 26,700 acres have been treated annually by aerial larviciding. In addition, an average of 5,040 miles have been treated annually with truck-based ultralow-volume spray equipment to kill adult mosquitoes. So next time you see that yellow plane or the mosquito truck, give them a wave. IRMCD is fighting the battle to keep those pesky insects from biting and spreading disease. WELL FISHED

Warm Temps Bring Great Fishing

A

fter a cooler winter than our great forecasting pros anticipated, it looks like it’s lining up to be a pleasant spring. The last couple of months of fishing started out red hot, but after a couple of brutally cold months, the warming temperatures will bring great fishing. In the Indian River Lagoon, expect large speckled sea trout to be warming in the shallows along with small groups of snook and redfish. Stalk quietly on the calm days—as the water warms, the fish will be more aware of their surroundings. Juvenile tarpon should be out of their winter homes and looking for anything to eat. Small, soft plastic baits along with live shrimp and a popping cork should be the go-to for this time of year, but be wary in the really shallow stuff, the stealthier the better. Later presentations will offer larger rewards. The pompano will be in full swing in the river and along the beaches. Sand fleas and cut clam will be your best bet. Look for cleaner water for larger schools. Offshore cobia fishing will also be picking up as the seas start to calm after the winter fronts become less frequent. Look for manta rays, large sea turtles or floating debris as they’re likely to be around these objects. 42

March-April 2018

Remember to practice catch and release. When holding any of these fish, try to keep them in the water as much as possible and revive before you release so they make a speedy recovery. ountless veterans have never experienced the war memorials of Washington, D.C. Honor Flight seeks to change that. Honor Flight is a non-profit organization that honors America’s veterans for their service by flying them to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. All funds raised ensure every veteran flies absolutely free. Southeast Florida Honor Flight is based in Stuart and serves Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, and Palm Beach counties. Since its inception, it has flown 2,480 veterans. With America’s WWII veterans now in their later years of life, Honor Flight is in a race against time to honor them. As time marches on, we now

include area Korean War veterans and eventually Vietnam War Veterans will be equally honored. SFHF carries out four flights per year, each transporting 80-85 local veterans and their assigned guardians on a trip of a lifetime, departing from Palm Beach International Airport. Upon landing, the group is greeted by citizens anxious to extend their gratitude. The day is spent transporting the contingent via police escorted motor coaches to visit the U.S. Marine Memorial (Iwo Jima), The Air Force Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery (for the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), the World War II Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial. The biggest surprise occurs upon their return. The veterans are welcomed home by hundreds of locals, giving them a true welcome home which many never received years ago. It’s an opportunity to express gratitude, shake hands, and say thank you. Costs for an Honor Flight include chartering an American Airlines A321, motor coach transportation with police escort, three meals, and Honor Flight hats and t-shirts for the day, four times per year, totals around $400,000. It’s a day that means the world to the veterans. “Besides the day I got married and the birth of my children, this was one of the best days of my life.” This statement is heard frequently. Though they are exceedingly humble and feel the heroes are those who never came home, they are deeply touched by the experience. Not only do these veterans get the day to reflect on their memorials,

Crowds welcoming our veterans at DCA upon arrival in Washington, DC. Photo by Gary Sellers.

they get a reverent environment with fellow veterans that brings out memories and stories; the thrill of seeing that America has not forgotten their service; and a zest for life that rejuvenates them in their final years and days. For everyone else, it’s a day focused on thanking these courageous men and women for serving our nation and for helping to preserve our freedom and way of life. No accessible veteran database exists, so SFHF relies on word of mouth and public education to find WWII and Korean War veterans. If you or a veteran you know would like to take their Honor Flight (and hasn’t already), fill out an application online. SFHF also accepts applications from Vietnam veterans who will become the next group to be honored. In addition, Honor Flight always needs guardians—trip escorts for every veteran. It’s an extremely meaningful, life-changing day for both guardian and veteran. For more information, to get involved, fill out a veteran or guardian application, or donate, visit HonorFlightSEFL.org, or call 1-855-FLYAVET.

Secret Lunch Lady Society: Eliminating School Lunch Debt, One Child at a Time

E

ight-year-old twins, Tess and Olivia, arrived home one day with a red stamp that said “Payment Due” across each hand. Olivia explained to their mother, Lisa, that when they reached for the tray of pizza at lunch that day, the lunch worker saw their hand stamps, pulled the tray back, and grabbed two brown paper sacks instead. Tess added, “Everyone saw, Momma! Everyone knows the brown bags mean you can’t pay for lunch.” The unwelcome news that their roof needed to be replaced had put a dent in everything from a family vacation, Christmas, and now school lunches. If Lisa and Chris combined made $500 less a month, they would qualify for government help, but they get up every morning and go to work, earning barely enough to make ends meet. Like so many families, they’re doing the right thing, but bumps in the road can cause financial strain. In 2017, CNN produced “School Lunch Shaming: Inside America’s Debt Crisis.” Vero Beach resident Mary Lou Brown skimmed the article and tried to forget it. “The contents of the story kept popping up in my mind,” Mary recalls. “I remember going through a drive-thru and tossing the change in the ashtray of my car. It was 35 cents. All of the sudden, it hit me that loose change could be the difference between a hot lunch and an alternative lunch for a child.” Brown explained her idea for the Secret Lunch Lady Society to her family, who agreed they were onboard to create a nonprofit organization to raise funds to pay off overdue lunch bills for working families.

46

March-April 2018

Since the creation of the Secret Lunch Lady Society in December 2017, the organization has paid school lunch debt for working families at 10 schools throughout Indian River County. “We don’t want to stop with lunches. We learned from Superintendent Dr. Rendell and Board Member Tiffany Justice that many schools lack playground equipment, and our goal is to help write grants and secure donations to help in that capacity, as well,” Brown said. Make a donation at SecretLunchLadySociety.org. Together, we can eliminate school lunch debt, one child at a time.

he Treasure Coast Aero Club was established in 1956— the second chapter to form in the state. There are currently 60+ active members, including spouses. This diverse club of aeronautical enthusiasts consists of airline pilots, former military pilots (including a WWII veteran), acrobatic pilots, and private pilots. Dave Caswell is the current president and each year, like any other club, there’s a vote for board members. Somehow he keeps getting elected—he must be doing something right! Dave became a pilot after his wife bought him lessons 27 years ago in Maine. However, he didn’t start flying regularly until he moved to Florida 17 years ago. He flew for the Coast Guard Auxiliary as an observer, then as crew, and first pilot. Flying from here to Alaska is at the top of Dave’s bucket list, most likely in a RV7. Treasure Coast Aero Club meetings take place the second Wednesday of each month, usually in a member’s home or hangar. Everyone brings a dish and enjoys the social outing talking about flying, airplanes, new rules and regulations, and whatever else comes up. And of course, there’s always a little time reserved to talk about club matters. They have three statewide flyings each year where they gather with all the other chapters in the state. “Nowhere in the world can you have this much fun and meet so many interesting accomplished people for $20 a year,” Dave says. “The goal of the club is to fly and have fun!” Whether you’re a pilot or an airplane enthusiast, contact them today and be a part of a wonderful group of people! A Lifetime of Aviation Experience

S

ome people are lucky enough to find their life’s passion at an early age. Matthew Adams began flying at 16 with a gliding scholarship from the Combined Cadet Force Royal Air Force Section. He obtained a flying scholarship at 17, gaining his Private Pilot’s License before he could even drive. In 2003, he joined the Royal Air Force and was the youngest commissioned officer in the RAF for a short period. After serving for the Queen and Country he decided it was time to focus on his career. Florida is a highly sought after location to obtain a commercial or private license. So, in 2005 Adams came to Florida! He studied hard, flew as much as he legally was allowed to and obtained his European flying License (EASA) and American (FAA) licenses. When he finished his training, he was thrown a curve ball and asked to stay on as an instructor for the company. He ended up becoming an examiner and the Chief Pilot for the European division of Aviator College in Fort Pierce. After working for them for 10 years, he decided it was time to spread his wings again with the airlines and applied for a number of open positions and ended up flying out of Vero for Elite Airways. Ask any pilot, your base doesn’t get any closer than that! If you ever fly Elite to New York and hear the British accent, you’ll know it’s him! n a span of less than six months, my son and my business were born. My son, Trey Thofner, arrived in this world in October of 1973. I started Jetson TV and Appliance in March of 1974 with my brother, Scott. Today, I’m the CEO and Trey is the president. We survived the recession of the past few years and we’re thriving due to our father-son commitment to great service, best prices and all things local. When I started this company, I had just moved from Pompano Beach to Fort Pierce. I had served in Vietnam and was ready to spread my wings. In 1974, Fort Pierce was much smaller. I became a member of different service organizations and I knew that I had to do business locally. In fact, our company checks were printed with, “We do business with people who do business with us.” At our stores, we do things the old-fashioned way. A real person always answers the phone. We try to do loaners if someone’s appliance breaks down. We do our own service calls. Many employees have been with us for more than 10 years; their children now work at Jetson, and they will work with Trey, too. This is unheard of in the industry. My son Trey is intrigued by design. Each of our locations is designed and decorated differently as we have grown and evolved as a company. Trey is aware of the growth coming to the Treasure Coast and we will soon be building a new location in Tradition. Some of the stores are decorated with Highwaymen art and fishing trophies. Trey added authentically designed saltwater fish to the walls of the Fort Pierce showroom. In the St. Lucie West store, there’s a replica of the sailfish that Trey, my nephew Adam (Scott’s son) and I caught in the Bahamas in 2003 that was just shy of the record. In Stuart, we have original art from the Bahamas. It’s a map of our life here in a community that we love. It’s gratifying to see my son involved in the day-to-day of a business that was born when he was. It’s also great to see some of the kids he went to school with now playing a major role in the family business; Dale Sorensen Jr. (real estate) and Dr. Ray Delaporta Jr. (dentistry) come to mind. Vero Beach is very family oriented and it makes me proud to see the next generation stepping into the family shoes, so to speak. I think that’s what America is based upon. When a community takes care of its own, that’s a good place to live. Learn more about Jetson TV & Appliance at ShopJetson.com.

Beachside Rehab: Breaking the Chains of Addiction

I

was exhausted. Physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially exhausted. Lying on a bathroom floor in Ashland, Kentucky unable to move, I finally realized that drugs and alcohol were going to kill me. I knew in my head that I had a problem, but also believed that at some point, the problem would go away when I was ready. However, in that moment, on the bathroom floor, that feeling of defeat made that long one-foot journey from my head to my heart and I knew I couldn’t stop using on my own. For the first time in my life, at 31 years old, I reached out for help. I yelled out to my roommate to call an ambulance, because I knew I needed medical help, and to call my parents, because I knew they could find me the help I needed for my mind, body, and spirit. I was on a plane to sunny south Florida 48 hours later. I was headed to a treatment center, Beachside Rehab, which my parents had found by what I have come to believe as divine intervention. The decision I had made to get help, combined with the fact that my parents had already found a place for me to go before I reached out, seemed to have all the right pieces falling into place at exactly the right time. When I arrived at Beachside, I felt immediately at home. Both the facility and the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. I knew I was in the right place. During my stay at Beachside, they helped me develop a strong foundation and understanding of my problem, as well

as a solution. Drugs and alcohol weren’t my problem, they were my solution. The problem was somewhere inside of me. It was in the way I viewed the world, and the way I believed the world viewed me. Once I was able to address these issues, for the first time in my life, I was able to feel peace inside my soul. It didn’t hurt that I was also able to use beach time as a form of therapy and presence of peace. This was only the beginning of a wonderful journey in a life devoted to recovery. This journey started almost four years ago and I wouldn’t change any of it. Today, I walk around as a free man, no longer held back by my chains of addiction and alcoholism. I can go anywhere and do anything I set my mind to without fear of doing the wrong thing or slipping up. At 35 years old, the best feeling in the world is when I speak to my parents today and they tell me how proud they are of me and what I’m doing. I now work for the same treatment center, Beachside Rehab, which helped save my life. I’ve been given the gift to help other people who are just like me. I share my experience with those people and hopefully make them feel as comfortable as I did when I first arrived as a scared little boy inside. I owe all of this to three things: my parents, Beachside Rehab and God. Jay Wonn is the Admissions Manager at Beachside Rehab. Every day he is helping and encouraging others to live a healthier life. Catch your plane, not the flu… How to stay healthy while flying. Written by ANGELA KING, AP, DOM, INDIAN RIVER ACUPUNCTURE & INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

W

saline rinse or spray. Nasal irrigation cleans at least some pathogens from the nose and can reduce the risk of a sinus infection post-flying. Mayo Clinic does not agree with swabbing the nose with Vaseline or Vicks. A certain type of pneumonia can result from inhaling oily particles over long periods of time. To boost immune strength, get proper rest before and during your travel. Changing time zones can cause jet lag, which results from disruption of our body’s circadian rhythms. A recent study from Cambridge University showed that such disruption compromises the immune system making an individual more susceptible to infections. Melatonin can make for an easier adjustment to the new time zone. Before travel, begin going to sleep an hour earlier each night until you reach your destination’s time zone and take a melatonin supplement 30 minutes prior to bed. At least two weeks in advance of flying, supplement with a high-quality probiotic and extra Vitamin D (5,000-10,000 IU daily). Herbs such as elderberry syrup, echinacea, eleuthrococcus, and medicinal mushrooms have all been shown to improve immune function. Visit your acupuncturist for proper dosing of these herbs and for a wellness treatment. During travel, stay hydrated, eat light meals, and avoid drinking alcohol. If you feel sick, use a thermometer to take your temperature. People often assume they don’t have a fever but never actually check. If you have a fever, don’t fly. Although inconvenient to travel plans, staying home to rest benefits both your health and the health of others.

ith the current flu epidemic sweeping the nation, the question of how to avoid getting sick while flying looms in many traveler’s minds. While there is no medicine or natural supplement that works 100 percent of the time to prevent illness, be it a vaccine or Vitamin C, taking measures to reduce risk is still prudent. Whether or not you get sick depends on exposure to a pathogen and the relative strength of your immune system versus the strength of the pathogen. Interventions aimed at both reducing exposure to germs and boosting immunity give travelers the best chance of staying healthy. Flying poses a greater risk of acquiring an acute illness due to crowded conditions, lack of fresh air, and germ ridden surfaces. Studies have found that recycled cabin air is not the vehicle that spreads the most germs. Contaminated surfaces where viruses can survive for days or even weeks pose the biggest threat. On an airplane, the tray table, seat belt, restroom surfaces, seat back pockets, and magazines harbor the biggest clusters of germs. Although best to avoid contact with these surfaces, using disinfectant wipes to clean them may help. Use paper towels when touching bathroom handles or faucets. Hand washing is the preferred way to dislodge germs and stop the spread of disease. Hand sanitizer is your best defense when soap and water are not available. Wearing a mask can be beneficial if you are immunocompromised. A study conducted at West Virginia University found that a N95 respirator blocked almost all respiratory particles given off by a coughing simulator placed six feet away. The N95 masks are tight fitting and uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time, but do offer the greatest level of protection from airborne pathogens. Both before and after the flight, irrigate your nose with

Get in the

Art Zone

W

ith two young boys, our life is filled by playing with construction trucks, flying jumbo airplanes, and smashing blocks. Armed with an endless amount of energy, it’s nearly impossible to get those two to sit still. The beauty of youth, right? However, give them some paper, a box of crayons, and a little encouragement and wham! My two tiny Picassos will happily sit in their chairs and make magic. Much like hiding veggies in their dinner so they eat healthy without knowing it, this single act of encouraging creativity through Pam Sommers, Youth & Family something as easy as coloring is beyond Programs Manager beneficial to their young, growing brains. This simple exercise opens up a world of learning while also building skills in communication, self-expression, and confidence. If that tiny seed of inspiration can happen in my house, imagine how it would play out in an environment specifically designed for kids…an interactive space with more than 10 different play areas where kids don’t just study art, they create art; a multi-sensory place meant for kids to climb, play, create, and enjoy. For the past 18 months, Vero Beach Museum of Art has quietly been building a family-friendly institution called the Art Zone. This innovative idea transformed into a reality when the Hearst Foundation awarded the VBMA with a $125,000 grant. Unlike anything Vero Beach has enjoyed before, this vibrant new space satisfies a rapidly growing family program (0-12 years) that has nearly tripled in attendance over the last two years. Inside the 672-square-foot room is a magnetic wall, giant puzzle floor, a ceiling covered in constellations, puppet theater and an interactive sketch aquarium. From the colors to the textures used, every decision made while designing the Art Zone was carefully curated to enhance the experience. According to Youth and Family Programs Manager Pam Sommers, there were several goals in mind when planning the space. One objective was for the museum to be a local resource for art education and creative learning. Another focus centered on family. “We want to be accessible to families,” Sommers explains. “Our hope is parents come in and work together with their kids. We want to encourage the mentality that parents are first teachers.” The Art Zone opened in January and admission is free for children. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Learn more at VeroBeachMuseum.org.

or so many of us in a small bedroom community, being a part of an organization— whether for profit or a nonprofit—brings us together. A sense of community binds us and allows an opportunity to connect beyond prejudice or judgment of the size of our wallets. Perhaps the size of our hearts is a better measurement as we take moments throughout our day to look for small ways to connect with those in our area that could use a little assistance. Giving back to our community and extending an open door to nonprofit organizations in hosting events and charitable festivities is something one of our local businesses takes pride in. Since opening in 1986, Capt. Hiram’s Resort has operated knowing that bringing our community together benefits business and the job market, while helping our area grow stronger. It is through this commitment, Capt. Hiram’s is proud to roll out a community “give-back” effort called the Crush Calendar. Each month, a local nonprofit is featured and benefits in receiving $1 from the sale of each signature drink called a CRUSH. At the end of the month, the purchase proceeds will be presented to the organization. “It’s our way of saying thanks to all of you for your support,” says Will Collins, President of Capt. Hiram’s Resort and Indian River County native. When growing businesses understand the power of community, we all win and grow together as supporters—and frankly, as human beings.

Women Inspiring Women: One Hundred Years Ago and Stronger Than Ever

W

hen I think of historic female figures who made an impression on my life, my thoughts immediately turn to the most famous aviator, Amelia Earhart. She was determined to achieve her goals in a male-dominated world where women were supposed to conform to being housewives and mothers. Ironically, Amelia, and so many other women were making a statement nearly 100 years ago, long before hashtags like #strongwoman and #girlboss! Amelia’s attitude was infectious. She lived the dream that we all admire even today—flying around the world traveling to far away destinations. Growing up, I never realized that Amelia had a connection to Florida, and even more shocking, she had a connection to our community. Her publisher, George Putnam, was married to Dorothy Binney Putnam. Dorothy’s father, Edwin Binney, played a substantial role in developing Fort Pierce. By 1911, the Binney family was managing 1,000 acres of citrus groves then called Fort Pierce Farms, known today as the Indrio area. You see, the Binney family invented Crayola Crayons, and little did I know how much this family would color my world! Edwin Binney was an avid fisherman and it was his vision in 1919 that had a dramatic impact in establishing Fort Pierce Inlet and our shipping port which was accomplished in 1922, complete with a refrigeration terminal for holding fruit. This allowed the passage of a myriad of shipping vessels and helped grow our community for close to 100 years. Being married to George Putnam, America’s most powerful publisher, Dorothy had a highly visible marriage. She was a freethinker much like Amelia, and they became close friends. Residing in Rye, New York, Dorothy and her children often visited her parents when they returned to Fort Pierce where her father built a farmhouse in 1913 which still stands on Indrio Road. The house was named “Florindina.”

Amelia, her step son, David Putnam, and his wife, Nilla pictured here. The adorable puppy was a gift to the young couple who are also Sally Putnam Chapman’s parents.

Although George and Dorothy divorced in 1929 and he married Amelia in 1931, the two women remained close friends. After her divorce, Dorothy remarried Frank Monroe Upton and moved to Fort Pierce, first residing at Casa Caprona which still stands today. The newly married couple settled on 40 acres owned by P. P. Cobb, just four miles from her parents. Dorothy’s home was designed to sit snugly among giant old trees surrounded by orange groves. She named her estate “Immo-ko-lee,” derived from the Seminole name for “My Home Place.” Today, Sally Putnam Chapman, Dorothy’s granddaughter, resides at Immokolee along with her husband, Jack. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sally and I loved listening to stories of her grandmother’s adventures—a leader, rebel and strong woman. You see, Amelia ended up teaching Sally’s father, David to fly; and at the age of 16, Sally also learned to fly. Her little plane was a Piper Cub. When Sally described flying, her face lit up and she claimed it was “so easy!” When she received her pilot’s license, her father, David, gave her a beautiful wooden prop. It was the prop from Amelia’s first little plane crash, which Amelia had given to her father, David, after his first solo flight accomplishment. Sally is beautiful, down to earth and loves gardening like her grandmother, Dorothy. She is also a great writer. I loved reading “Whistled Like a Bird,” which tells of her grandmother’s secret diaries. A very special thanks to Sally Chapman Putnam, for sharing her morning with me. It was delightful!

Flying in the Unknown

od lurks in the chasms of the unknown and it feels uncomfortable sometimes to explore. Yet, we must go down in our hearts to see the open space of unwritten history. This is where very powerful intuition rests, scattered around calling out like stars. We can’t underestimate the courage it takes to think, to dream, to risk everything that leads to one small step for mankind. The Wright Brothers dreamed against all odds and defied conventional wisdom to take to the skies and fly. They drew inspiration from nature and pathways made by Euclid, da Vinci and Galileo, mentors who helped map the landscape of the world beyond. When we consider all the fear and judgement they faced, we are drawn to the moment they took flight on December 17, 1903 on the back roads of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. We live in a period when we should appreciate that we can still push against conventional wisdom, learn to think how we can fill our soul with hope without fear. Look outside today and witness children flapping their arms like a bird in an attempt to achieve flight. Those children will one day be aviators with the Blue Angels, astronauts on the SLS Rocket to Mars, or they will reinvent the way mankind travels altogether. So, as we start looking, we should be prepared to confront the unknown and challenge our beliefs and systems of faith. Let’s start flapping our arms. Follow Patrick on

From Sunrise to Beautiful Sunsets Zota Beach Resort is a Great Florida Gulf Getaway

I

’m a sunrise seeker. I love waking up on the east coast of Florida to be the first one to peek at the dawn of a new day! Sometimes, however, it’s nice to switch things up, you know? Like hopping in the Jeep and cruising across the state to stare at the most beautiful place to see a sunset: the Gulf of Mexico! We’re lucky to live within a few hours of both. We stayed at the Zota Beach Resort on Longboat Key. This charming little boutique hotel recently underwent a major revamping and it’s beautiful! Its location is the perfect weekend getaway from all the hustle and bustle of daily life. Nestled just a few miles from the popular St. Armands Circle, you can relax in a quiet setting by the sea or shop until you drop! There’s plenty of culture around, too. Upon arrival, we decided to check out “The Shore” for dinner which was recommended to us by our best friends. Order an “Old Fashioned,” it’s the best ever!

Our room at Zota was a corner room on the second floor facing the Gulf with a side view of the pool area. I loved sitting on our large balcony relaxing and enjoying the view. The room and bathroom were very spacious with a modern décor. The resort offers a poolside bar along with an upper deck bar and Viento Kitchen + Bar on the second floor overlooking the pool and beach. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset, too. Our bartenders were very entertaining and interacted with their guests—they even created some magical cocktails for everyone to try! For the perfect beach day, there are several options available. Lounging in a cabana, paddleboarding, kayaking, or playing games makes for a lovely day. They even have an outdoor chess game—checkmate! On the morning of our departure we enjoyed a great breakfast at the hotel. The hotel staff is super friendly and the general manager has been with the resort for many years. We loved relaxing, dining and staying at this beautiful property, part of the Opal Collection of hotels. Pack your bags, you’ll want to stay here, too! orn and raised in Wichita, Kansas, R. Scott Duncan was bitten by the shutterbug at age 10. He frequently borrowed his family’s Kodak 110 Instamatic to take pictures of his friends skateboarding and dirt biking. Photography soon became a part-time hobby, but like many boys growing up in the 70s, he became more interested in music and girls, so he learned to play the guitar. Some of his high school buddies formed a band and invited Scott to join as their bass player. Not having enough Photo by Barbara Ferrera time for two hobbies, he had to make a choice: music or photography. Music prevailed, and he traded his camera for guitar strings. Although his feet and values were firmly planted in mid-western soil, Scott’s heart belonged to the sea. In 1987, he packed up his guitar and moved to Los Angeles. Once in California, he worked for the Salvation Army by day, moonlighting with his new band, “The Attachments” by night. They played a variety of popular venues in California and toured throughout Europe. After numerous name changes, the group disbanded and fate would once again steer Scott in a new direction. Scott’s priorities shifted as he moved up the ladder at the Salvation Army, but his creative juices were still flowing. Realizing that Scott clearly had the “photographer’s eye,” his friends and colleagues convinced him to upgrade his camera gear. Photography would soon take center stage in Scott’s life. While driving up and down the Central California coast, Scott spent many hours finetuning his craft. Once again, fate would intervene and hold up a detour sign, this time pointing east. Since his immediate family lived in Florida, Scott accepted a 74

position at the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, and along with his dogs, Logan and Julia, moved to Vero Beach. It didn’t take long for him to discover the lovely east coast beaches and piers. While visiting his family near Sarasota, he was introduced to the Gulf Coast. In Boca Grande, the charming, historical architecture and crystalline, emerald sea caught his attention and has become one of his favorite spots to shoot. Scott abides by the photographer’s credo “the camera is the artist’s palette; the lens is the paintbrush.” Ultimately, trial and error, lots of practice and getting out there and exploring your surroundings are the basic tools of the trade. Scott is an award-winning, internationally published photographer. Locally, you can find his work on the walls of Indian River Medical Center’s Health and Wellness Center. Scott has an innate desire to capture the earth’s beauty. From coast to coast, R. Scott Duncan has come a long way from Kansas and that little pocket-sized Kodak 110 Instamatic camera. LIFE

WELL LOVED

Written and Photography by RITA ROY

Free Falling into Love P

at and I met at Skydive Sebastian in the summer of 2016. While we both frequented the Drop Zone, we had somehow missed interacting with each other until that summer. However, from the first day we spent time together, there’s barely been a day since then that we’ve been apart. We fell in love quite unexpectedly, and a few months later, on my birthday, Pat proposed. I was beside myself with elated joy and the thought of spending our lives together. The funny thing is, I don’t think either of us ever expected to get married. I was never the sort of girl that spent any time visualizing her dream wedding. Neither Pat nor I knew the first place to start. Pat’s family is from Pennsylvania, and his cousin owns a beautiful barn that the kids in the family played in while growing up. His cousin eventually renovated that space to become a wedding venue, and it seemed pretty natural for us to get married there with his loved ones and family so close by. A couple of months later, while adding up the cost of flowers, caterers, flights, and the impending prospect of years of debt this “happiest day” would incur, we found courage in the bottom of our favorite Pinot Noir and admitted to one another that this wedding was turning into something we dreaded rather than looked forward to. We decided that it wasn’t the way we wanted to go about things, and that we weren’t very traditional folk anyway, and turned the entire event on its head. 76

March-April 2018

We decided to host the ceremony and reception at Skydive Sebastian, where it all began, where we could celebrate the two aspects of life we both love the most: the sky and each other. In a wonderful whirlwind, suddenly April 22, 2017 was upon us. The Drop Zone was transformed from a skydiving facility into a wedding venue. Family and friends flew in from all over the country, and we enjoyed quite an entertaining day as we watched while some of the most unconventional humans we’ve met mingled with some very traditional and religious Midwest family members—and loved it! One of our instructors and good friend, Paul Kendzior, married us, though the ceremony was delayed due to Paul having a malfunction on his main parachute and having to perform a “cutaway” to release his main chute and land safely on his reserve. We also planned a skydive for us and the wedding party, but the jump was rescheduled due to high winds. It went without a hitch and was not only one of our most memorable jumps, but also Pat’s 200th skydive! Our day was magical and memorable, and we couldn’t have asked for anything more. We thank everyone who traveled far and wide to join us on our wedding day, and Skydive Sebastian for allowing us to invade their skies and their grounds! K9s For Warriors

W

hen Shari Duval’s son returned from two tours in Iraq as a civilian K9 bomb handler, something wasn’t right. Brett, the son she remembered, didn’t actually return. At the time, neither Shari nor Brett truly understood what he was going through. Shari fervently researched his symptoms and found he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She also found this shocking statistic: more than 20 percent of post-9/11 service members are diagnosed with the disability. It burdens them with suffocating anxiety, sleep deprivation, anger, hopelessness, and often, thoughts of suicide. In Shari’s quest for answers about PTSD recovery, she noticed that when Brett was with his dog, a sense of normalcy would return. He was more relaxed. She found the answer for her son and for other post-9/11 veterans: a service dog trained to mitigate the symptoms of PTSD. Shari and Brett combined their resources to form a nonprofit that would rescue dogs to rescue warriors. In 2011, K9s For Warriors was born. Since then, the organization has grown beyond their dreams. The initial 78

March-April 2018

vision was to pair 12 warrior-canine teams per year; in 2017, the organization reached 12 warrior-canine teams per month! At K9s For Warriors, veterans and active duty service members are paired with a carefully evaluated, rescue-turned-service dog based on their needs and personality. Each class trains together for three weeks, led by Warrior Trainers who are program graduates themselves. All program participants are provided a highly trained service animal, certification, meals, transportation and housing at no cost to them. K9s For Warriors’ goal is to return them to their families and communities with dignity and independence. Thanks to countless and tireless donors and supporters, K9s For Warriors has grown to become the nation’s largest service dog organization for military veterans. Its mission is to serve post-9/11 service members suffering from post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and/or military sexual trauma. The VA estimates 20 veterans per day die by suicide. Our mission is to end veteran suicide by giving veterans a new “leash” on life. You can join our life-saving mission by visiting K9sForWarriors.org.

Leaving on a Jetplane…

With Your Dog

S

o, you’re traveling via airplane and you’d like Fifi to join you. Here are some tips to make your journey a positive one. Be sure to check with the airline for pet travel regulations and requirements, as each one has different guidelines. Your pet must be at least eight weeks old and weaned from her mother. If you’re traveling internationally, she must be at least 15 weeks old. If she can lie down, stand and turn around in an approved pet carrier capable of being stored under your seat, Fifi might be able to travel with you in the cabin. Otherwise, she must be transported in a designated checked baggage compartment of the airplane. Fear not, it is subject to the same air pressurization as the cabin in which passengers travel. Short-nosed breeds such as Pugs, Boxers, and Shih Tzus that have respiratory system issues will have a more difficult experience in the air, so please thoughtfully consider whether this travel method is in Fifi’s best

interest. Schedule your trip to avoid extremely cold or hot weather, and choose travel times that are temperate, such as early morning or evening. If you must travel during an especially hot or cold period, an acclimation certificate may be in order. Avoid heavy travel days and holidays that can potentially cause delays. Be sure to select a direct flight, or at least travel with one airline if at all possible. If you cannot travel with Fifi, consider hiring someone to travel with her to ensure her safety. An airline veterinary health certificate is required for international travel and can be issued by your veterinarian prior to your departure date. If you’re traveling to Hawaii or out of the country, be sure to allow ample time for preparation of the necessary documents. Fifi must of course be healthy and up-to-date with her vaccinations and general medical care. Be sure to have a sufficient supply of any medicines she requires. It’s also a good idea to have her groomed, including nails trimmed, in preparation for travel. If your dog is prone to anxiety, your veterinarian may suggest a tranquilizer or other relaxation means. The crate must be an approved size with proper ventilation and be marked with an arrow pointing toward the roof of the crate. It must also be marked on the outside with your name, clearly identifying you and Fifi. A food and water schedule must be provided with bowls for food and water inside. Be careful to limit Fifi’s food and water intake prior to departure. Her last meal should be given four or so hours prior to departure, in particular when traveling internationally. From the team at Indian River Animal Hospital, happy travels! For more information, visit IRAHInc.com or call (772) 494-7104. Charles B. Johnson, DVM is owner and director of Indian River Animal Hospital, Inc. He and Marjorie J. Williams DVM, MS, DACVP are available Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:30pm and Saturday 8:00am-12:30pm.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

WARNING FLAGS Water Closed to Public Agua Cerrada al Publico

REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their

territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

The energy of March is decidedy feisty. For all the fire signs, (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), this is pure heaven as you are in your element. The rest of us might feel a little exhausted but use this time to accomplish what you have been putting off. Mark your calendars for Mercury retrograde from March 22nd - April 15th. Remember to clean out anything that no longer serves you. April is the perfect month to remove what doesn’t feed your soul, and this includes not just things but people too. ARIES: Power up, Aries! March is your month, with half of the planets in

fire signs. You will be very tempted to go full speed ahead. This is fine, but just be aware that most people will not be able to keep up with you. On March 22, Mercury goes retrograde in your sign, so it will feel like two steps ahead and one step back. April is gloriously exciting as three planets are still in your sign. April 15 is a big day. Not only does Mercury go direct but there is a new moon. You’ve been charging ahead at a great clip and just need to keep that good energy flowing.

TAURUS: Your ruling planet is Venus, the planet of love, and she will

be making her presence known in March. This Venusian energy can be either sexy and fun, or just plain feisty. You get to choose. Be cautious around March 23 when Venus and Pluto square off. Pick your battles. Don’t get into any money arguments, because you won’t win. Remember, this is supposed to be a fun month, so focus on paying more attention to your ardent admirers. It’s time to take some time off in April. Get outdoors and do something you’ve never tried before, like paddleboarding or horseback riding. You can easily get stuck in your routines, but this is the time to shake things up.

GEMINI: Mercury your ruling planet, is going retrograde on March 22.

You might be tempted to dredge up old memories, or reconnect with lost lovers. Think things over very carefully regarding any personal decisions. The full moon on March 31 ushers in a peaceful weekend. In April, a financial matter could stop you in your tracks. You are an excellent negotiator, so don’t let anyone push you around. If you need to get a better deal, you will, but only if you ask for it. The planet of love, Venus, will be in your sign on April 24. For the next three weeks, you should be able to magnetize what you need.

CANCER: March is a month of fits and starts. The heavens are full of fire energy, and since you are a water sign, this can either be an interesting and exciting month or an exhausting one. From March 6-13, things will be at their most intense. Take advantage of doors that open, but be prepared for others that will close. April 10 is a rocky day. Someone might be getting under your skin but always remember it is up to you as to whether they actually do. On April 15, the new moon arrives, helping you feel like things are finally going your way. LEO: When out in their natural element, lions sleep about 23 hours a day. However, you will have little time for sleep this March with so many planets in fire signs. You will feel courageous and as if nothing can stop you. Jupiter goes retrograde on March 8, and this will slow you down a bit, but this could be a good thing. The end of March is tricky, with the potential of you getting into some disputes that could turn ugly. Your job is to walk away. April begins with a lovely aspect between Venus and Saturn, signaling a more serious tone to your love life. There will be more structure between you and your partner. Just keep your lips sealed around April 25. If someone has entrusted you with a secret, make sure you keep it.

SCORPIO: Passion is the name of the day on March 6. Mark that on your

calendar and be assertive, whether in the romance department or regarding a passion project. The weekend of March 9 looks like your heart is beaming. Maybe you are seeing loved ones, or your romantic life is kicking into a higher gear. Slow down on March 13 as there is a possibility of a disappointment. Follow your instincts and all will be well. April is a month for concentrating on getting things organized and stable. Not your favorite thing to do, but it’s time. You will feel so much better once everything is where it should be.

SAGITTARIUS: The full moon on March 1 intensifies your abilities to

impress higher-ups. Use this first week of March to further your career goals. Romance is the key word for the rest of the month. If single, get out there. Don’t be surprised if someone from your romantic past resurfaces. If you need to tackle a financial issue, do it around April 6-7. The new moon in Aries on the 15th will be a great time to charge up your love life. You’re feeling frisky and energized, so be prepared to be noticed. You could meet someone whose energy matches your own, which is really saying something!

CAPRICORN: You’ve had such a serious time lately, you might have

forgotten how to have fun. Several planets are in fiery Aries in March, encouraging you to break free from your work routines. It’s time to stop waiting for something to happen. You need to go after what you want. Be careful with your possessions around March 23, including watching where you leave your phone or bag. Things can get lost very easily. Mercury won’t go direct until April 15, so if you need to finalize anything before that time, just make sure you read all the fine print. It’s important this April that you enjoy the company of family and friends, especially those that are elderly. You never know how long they will be around.

AQUARIUS: Good fortune with money is the name of the game March 1-2.

If you need to take a chance on something, do it then. During that first week of March, you’ll feel like ignoring the minutia of life. The second week, you are handling a lot of different personalities. You are very good at being a mediator so don’t be afraid to take on that role. Once Mercury turns retrograde on the 22nd, you might feel stuck, but that isn’t really the case. All your hard work is still percolating in the background. April 7 and 21 are excellent days to realize you’ve caught up on work. Time to sit back and review all the progress you’ve made.

PISCES: Sometimes you like to live in a fantasy world, always imagining all the miraculous things that could happen next. With the full moon on March 1, it’s time to open your eyes and deal with reality…like getting your taxes done now, and not waiting until the last minute. If you have something bugging you around March 13, clear the air by talking it out with a trusted friend. Your health suffers when you let emotions fester. April 7 is an auspicious day. Looks like things are going your way, so just try not to gloat. April 23 has you being recognized for something you recently accomplished.

VIRGO: You are not one to toot your own horn, but this March indicates

that you need to stop downplaying who and what you are. March 11 is an excellent day to stand your ground about something that really matters to you. Once Mercury goes retrograde on the 22nd you may need to wait a few weeks before making any significant changes to your life. There are several intense planets in your house of fun during the month of April. You have a tendency to work too hard, but these feisty planets won’t let you do what you normally do, which is overwork! Your cautious nature needs to be thrown to the wind.

LIBRA: The first week of March might feel as if you are moving in slow

motion. Don’t fight it. Relax if possible and take some time off. Mercury goes retrograde on the 22nd so this will also contribute to the feeling that you’re getting nowhere fast. Think of this as cloudy weather and there is nothing you can do about it, so just ease into a slower pace. Clearly the universe thinks you need it! April Fools Day is when arguments could arise. Just stay out of trouble, and then move forward with your projects after the 2nd. The full moon on the 29th is a great time to trade in your car, or clean out your attic. Time to start fresh!
