LIFE

WELL SAID

Love is in the air!

Dreaming of a magical wedding? Well, we’ve got some dream weddings and inspiration for you! The Treasure Coast is known for many things: beautiful beaches, great food, golf, tennis, and so much more. It’s also a fabulous wedding destination! There are so many stunning venues that offer a multitude of options when planning your special day. In this issue, we’ve tried to think outside the wedding box. My favorite photography session this issue ended in a tie—our “Sea of Love” mermaid beach shoot and the dreamy hangar wedding were both so fun! I hope you enjoy them as much as we did shooting them! Throughout this issue, we’ve showcased breathtaking images from local wedding photographers. It’s been a long time (like 26 years) since I said “I DO,” but putting this issue together really made me want to do it again! If you’re getting married in the future, we’ve put together a bridal checklist to make planning easy. We tried to think of everything one might need to plan for the big day using local venues and vendors right here in our community! Cheers to your special day here on our spectacular Treasure Coast! Mermaid kisses and starfish wishes,

Life

is all about perspective. Special thanks to my “Dream Team,” those rare individuals who have listened without judgment, spoken without prejudice, helped me without entitlement, understood without pretension and loved me for me. We all see the world differently but the common thread that connects us is that we choose to see the world beautifully. Sometimes our thoughts can make the world seem ugly and unfair. Don’t ever let your own insecurities jeopardize your future. You are in the driver’s seat…but always drive with caution. Working with each of you never feels like work. I am forever grateful for all that you do to make life fun and for being my Portfolio family. Kelly Beard, thanks for crossing my T’s and dotting my I’s, and always letting me bounce ideas off of you. Christina, without you, I would be a hot mess at deadline, yet you meticulously keep everything flowing and your creativity continues to amaze me. All those crazy ideas that are in my head come to life each issue because of ALL of YOU! Thank you! By the way, we’ve got a brand-new website designed by Joe Semkow—check it out! Sea of Love Once upon a sunrise I was staring out to sea

I saw a beautiful mermaid staring back at me

I wished upon a starfish that she would swim ashore Each day I wished just a little more Then one day I spotted her all stretched out in the sand I ran down to her rescue and asked for her hand This siren of the sea cast her spell upon me But our love was not meant to be Her love of the sea outweighed her love for me!

A UNIQUE AND HISTORICAL

Gem of a Venue W

aldo’s Secret Garden has been one of the top wedding destinations in Vero Beach since the venue opened to guests six years ago. Waldo E. Sexton broke ground on this unique property around 1911. A unique, historical gem in an urban setting, the main house was Waldo’s original homestead, while a driftwood-inspired house was built in the 1940’s to accommodate his daughter, Barbara and her new husband, John Tripson. Tied together by a jungle and whimsical sidewalk, the two historic homes have become an ode to Waldo’s love for rough wood and rustic construction. The family developed Vero Beach Dairy in 1922, which is the back parcel of the property (later renamed Tripson Dairy). What used to be a thriving agricultural business is now inactive, yet undisturbed to preserve its charm. Charlotte Tripson was inspired to create this shoot two years ago after visiting Salvation Mountain, a visionary environment covering a hill in the California desert. “I was drawn to the mountain because of it’s strange beauty. Only when I got there did I remember Waldo created a mountain in Vero, so its appeal made sense,” Tripson explains. “I knew I wanted to do something that would make people stop in their tracks, take pictures and just feel happy.” She was obsessed with the idea of white birds of paradise bursting with vibrant colors. “I woke up one Sunday morning with one goal, and that was to paint a tree,” Tripson says. Color was the main inspiration, but the next step was finding a team to bring this boho bridal shoot to life. “The vendors were so happy to be a part of such a creative shoot - it turned out we all needed a little something to spice up our regular day-to-day.” Waldo’s Secret Garden has such a strong, positive energy and continues a rich tradition of entertaining people from all over the world. The garden has become a venue for weddings, anniversary and retirement parties, luncheons and other gatherings. The Tripsons are excited for the future of the garden and all the possibilities that lie ahead. Learn more at WaldosSecretGarden.com or call (772) 562-6790. 28

Love Never Fails It never fails, I always cry during the precious daddy-daughter dances, but there’s one thing that always amazes me: observing from behind the camera as couples commit themselves to each other. They stand at the altar and gaze into the eyes of the love of their life and say, “It was always you, it will always be you.” Their love is bold, beautiful, passionate and fearless. They walk down the aisle with immense joy on their faces, hand in hand, as they step forward into forever, knowing that marriage won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it. “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

SEA

LIFE

Summer Time Fun: See a Turtle Dig

I

n 2005, Indian River County implemented a Habitat Conservation Plan to help protect and enhance beaches as sea turtle nesting habitats. With this implementation began the Indian River Sea Turtle Program and daily county-wide sea turtle nest monitoring. Throughout the past 12 years, county staff have been able to use long-term nesting trends to identify predator issues, beachfront lighting issues, human impacts along the coast, and work with the appropriate entities to improve these issues. In 2016, the county began the Turtle Friendly Business Program to help reach the goals described in the HCP. Each of these beachfront businesses have volunteered to follow the City of Vero Beach lighting ordinance to protect adult and hatchling sea turtles, promote local sea turtle activities, provide educational information to guests, and bring their own personality to sea turtle conservation. This program has been successful in reducing the number of hatchling disorientations in the City of Vero Beach, and has grown to include 10 businesses in 2018 (Vero Beach Hotel and Spa, Holiday Inn Beachside, Costa D’ Este, Reef Ocean Resort, Bouche Brothers, Oculina Bank, Riomar County Club, Portfolio Magazine, Paddles by the Sea, and Sea Turtle Realty). During nesting season, you can see hundreds of nests marked with yellow signs, red stakes and orange ribbon along the beach, all of which represent a small sample (about 10 percent) of the total nests laid across the county. Three days after each of these marked nests hatch, the contents of the nests

are dug up and evaluated. This allows scientists and decision makers to understand how well the beaches are incubating sea turtle nests, and if these nests are experiencing any impacts that can be managed more efficiently. Starting in July, the public is invited to watch certain nests be evaluated between Vero Beach Hotel and Costa d’Este, as a part of our “Turtle Dig” program. Guests will receive a small presentation about sea turtle biology, threats to their survival, and ways to help protect turtles, all while standing only a few feet away from a nest evaluation conducted by the Indian River Sea Turtle Program staff and volunteers. If any straggler hatchlings are found during the excavation, guests will then get to watch them be released into the ocean at the end of the dig. These experiences will take place in July and August at 8am at Sexton Plaza, three days after a nest hatches.

BOATER’S

LIFE

A Fisher of Men

I

n the spring of 1977, recently out of seminary, his bishop said, “Jack, there’s a little church in Vero Beach. I think it would be good for you, and you would be good for it.” Jack replied, “Where’s Vero Beach?” Born in Detroit and raised in the suburbs, Jack thought that’s where he and his family would eventually end up. But it was not to be, and he is so grateful. On Labor Day weekend 2016, the Rev. Capt. Andrew C. ‘Jack’ Diehl III retired from Our Savior Lutheran Church, exactly 39 years after starting there and was named Pastor Emeritus. Along with loving that congregation and this community, Pastor Jack’s love for the water and fishing is also an important part of his life. For many years, people knew that most Friday mornings, when the sun was coming up, he was on the water, “religiously,” he says with a smile.

36

May-June 2018

One of his favorite quotes is from the book “Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do.” Which he says is so very true, and why he thinks a majority of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen. Several years ago, Pastor Jack got his captain’s license, and while he doesn’t charter for hire, he will occasionally do fundraisers for different organizations, like Haiti Partners, by taking people on Indian River tours. Today, Pastor Jack is still connected at Our Savior, helping out occasionally and singing in the choir, but has more time for fishing, Rotary, Coastal Conservation Association, an interfaith lunch gathering each month, and mostly family. His four children are all well and live in Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Ohio, all married and four grandchildren. Being around them is among his and his wife’s greatest joys, and a big reason for their retirement. One of his grandsons is Andrew C. Diehl V and another is Jack. “How cool is that!” he says. His license plate says “GRACED,” which he admits has never been truer. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Save Our Indian River Lagoon

T

he fishing this spring was pretty darn good! The warmer temperature allowed for some great days on the river and the beaches. I’d like to take this time before the rainy summer season is upon us to bring awareness to the excess water that is dumped into our river during these months. As many of us know, and for those of you who don’t, there’s an extreme amount of freshwater that is poured into our river from inland areas that causes the water to turn very tannic and uninviting. There needs to be discussion about allowing more saltwater to flow from the ocean via a natural inlet, or some kind of irrigation to connect the two bodies of water. With the Bethel Creek raw sewage spill that went highly unpublicized, future accidents like this would not be so alarming because there would be proper flushing of this stagnant body of water. We should be more involved as a community in an effort to keep this wonderful and majestic body of water in better condition before it’s too late. Please read, learn, and get informed about the health of our estuary—it’s one of the primary reasons many of us live, work and play in Vero Beach. To book a charter, call Capt. Christian Yergens at (772) 643-2735 or visit CNYOnTheFly.com. Find him on @cnyonthefly.

REFLECTED

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD TO

BE SP EC T ACULAR Written by TIFFANY CORR Photography by PENNY TRANCHILLA

I

n late March, Rosemary Dronchi walked into the Vero Beach Book Center accompanied by her best friend of 63 years, Nancy Macaione. Inside, amongst friends and fans, sat her children Anthony and Gina, her three grandchildren Maria, Angela and Jack, as well as her husband of nearly 58 years, Tony. Ro, as her friends call her, was the night’s featured speaker. After nearly 22 years, Redemption, her final book in the Rossini trilogy, was complete. This was her celebration. “It was spectacular,” Rosemary said. Spectacular could easily describe the author herself. Originally from Albany, New York, this proud Italian has been a Vero Beach resident since 1985. Perhaps the name “Salon One” off Cardinal Drive rings a bell? Rosemary opened it in 1994 and enjoyed a decade of success before its destruction during the 2004 hurricanes. Not one to be deterred, in 2010, at the age of 69, she opened Park Place. “Everyone thought I was crazy. They told me I was too old to open another business. You are never too old.” Rosemary blocked out the noise and did it anyway. Growing up, Rosemary’s mother did not believe a woman should attend college. “It is my one regret. An education is so valuable and as a mother, I stressed its importance to my own children.” But she never stopped learning. In fact, after graduating high school she eventually went on to beauty school, became a business owner and continued to read. As her husband likes to say, “She has a hard drive.” In 1993, on a lark, she submitted a seven-page love story to a writing contest. Six months later, a phone call came announcing she would be published. “I hung up! I didn’t believe him,” she laughs. But a spark was ignited and at the age of 53 and Rosemary started something new, she began to write. “I would wake up at 3 a.m. just so I could write before work. I really wanted it.” She took classes, attended workshops, and met with private instructors. Even with rejection, she never quit. When frustrated or faced with some roadblock she didn’t yet understand, she kept going. “I liked the challenge.” 40

May-June 2018

Now, at 77, with her trilogy complete and her cookbook on the way, Rosemary beams with pride over what she considers the most important aspect of her life: family. “They are my greatest accomplishment.” Her voice dances as she describes her family’s giving and loving nature. She affectionately calls Tony a gem, crediting his support and encouragement. “I could not do any of this without my family. I’m so happy I did what I did.” Rosemary is proof you’re never too old to be spectacular. Camp Haven: Saving Lives in Vero Beach

T

he word “family” has many meanings. Camp Haven might have you rethinking the definition. Located on U.S. 1 appropriately at the juncture of Aviation Boulevard, the 21 men at Camp Haven are working to lift their lives off the runway again. A transitional home for men of all ages, Camp Haven’s director, Lalita Janke, says, “Family is stability and support, which these men didn’t have. Once they trust us that we are not going to hurt them or take from them, then a feeling of community or family can begin.” Not only do the men at Camp Haven come from broken families, 56 percent have addiction issues, while others have simply fallen into homelessness or hard times. One Camp Haven alum, Wil Harris, is now a published author of The Wicker Diaries, a novel chronicling his family’s history, and the owner of his own business coaching others about self-esteem and life goals. He is one of Camp Haven’s many success stories. Wil’s book, The Wicker Diaries, is available on Amazon. 42

May-June 2018

Wil found Camp Haven in 2013 and lived there for about eight months where he was able to rebuild his life. “I had unresolved anger and trauma issues from childhood that only grew worse as I became a young adult,” he says. Through a series of rough circumstances, Wil, an Ohio native, found himself in Vero Beach, alone, broke and homeless. He was given Lalita’s phone number and she asked him to come for an interview to see if he would be a fit as a resident. He was. Wil eventually landed a job as a server at Waldo’s where he could start saving money and become independent again. “Mrs. Janke became like family to me, and there was a camaraderie with the residents,” Wil explains. “Camp Haven gave me a safety net, and a chance to get back on my feet. Mrs. Janke says, ‘You can’t help others if you can’t help yourself first,’ and she’s right. At this point things are just getting better and better for me.” Residents pay $250 per month to live there, and after their first month, they are expected to find a job, any job, in the area. An important theme Camp Haven teaches is gratitude. The program has saved the lives of many men with at least 25 percent of the residents pursuing higher education to better themselves. “Camp Haven is like a finishing school for men,” adds Lalita. “They’ve had an incomplete education in the world, and I have to make sure I utilize every minute I have with them. I want them to leave with better ideas and better citizenship. Nobody knows how deep and dark the trench was that they came from. Some of these men never knew what a real family was like— so how can they be judged? Here we celebrate the holidays, birthdays and graduation parties together as a group. For some of them, it is the first time they have had a birthday party. I am so proud that for them they have made a massive improvement.” Learn more at CampHaven.net. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Healthy Habits for Special Needs Athletes “It’s the little things that turn into big things that make major changes in peoples lives.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

T

his message is so simple, yet most of us mere mortals fail to make any changes, let alone life changes, singlehandedly. We need that extra push to come from a place of inspiration to make things happen. One woman in our community is generating major transformations in peoples lives, one Sunday at a time.

It’s the little things… Last fall, Laura Radocaj accompanied her sister, Maria Colontrelle, to a Special Olympics Golf Tournament in Orlando. Upon arriving, Laura was surprised by what she saw. “I noticed that a large majority of the athletes, from a health standpoint, were not in their best shape.” In fact, Laura found some hard numbers to support her theory. Sixty percent of Special Olympics adult athletes are overweight or obese; 25 percent have low bone density. Those stats shocked her. “This is a problem,” Laura thought. She witnessed first-hand the positive benefits of a healthy lifestyle in her own sister’s life. Plus, being that Laura was proficient in health and fitness, this was an opportunity to initiate effective change amongst a group with whom she felt a personal connection. So, in addition to her full-time job, this self-described fitness nut, who is married to her college sweetheart and mother to twins Rudy and Ryan, decided to add one more title to her already full plate. “Special Needs Fitness Coach.” 44

May-June 2018

…that turn into big things Fitness wise, Laura has done it all. Spinning. Yoga. Marathons. Boot Camps. Exercise has always been in her life. Six years ago, she was introduced to CrossFit and never looked back. Laura used her CrossFit background as the foundation to build a new kind of class for special needs athletes. The modified version is constructed for various fitness levels with the goal of building stamina, strength, coordination, flexibility, power and speed. The class lesson extends beyond the one hour of sweat on Sunday. “We give a homework assignment and healthy tip each week. I want them to know they are part of a community.” …that make major changes in peoples lives About 12 people participate each week. “This program has given these athletes confidence. Some have never jogged before and now they’re doing laps around the gym,” Laura explains. At the start of the program, she worried if she would have enough volunteers, but the support has been overwhelming. “At first, we had more volunteers than athletes. I wanted to get t-shirts for the athletes and without even asking, had a donor offer to pay. This experience has confirmed to me that this world is full of amazing people.” So much positive change and all it took was one woman willing to lead the way. A Special Crossfit Class Classes are open to anyone in the special needs community, and offered every Sunday from 11:30-12:30pm at Vero Strength & Conditioning SpecialCrossFit Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

My Favorite Things

Written and Photography by CINDY O’DARE

O

ne of my favorite movies is The Sound of Music. Every song makes me cry—one way or another—with happy tears. “Edelweiss” makes me think of my daughters and how much I love them. “Climb every mountain” makes me feel like love conquers all. “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” shows the deep love we can have for anyone, even if they’re not like us or what we consider normal. Who can listen to “I am 16 going on 17” and not think of young, innocent love, so deep and vulnerable? I saved the best for last: “My Favorite Things.” What are your favorite things? I think about my favorite things a lot: a portrait my mom did of me when I was a little girl, letters from Katie and Lily while they were at summer camp, my grandmother’s dishes and a handwritten key lime pie recipe, a walk in the woods, gardenias, cardinals outside my window and owls that swoop by at night, my gold bumblebee ring, and most of all cherished memories with my best friends and

family, including my French bulldog, Clarabelle. Wow! I’ve got so much to be thankful for. To me, love equals gratitude. Love equals giving. Love is God’s message, and ultimately, it’s why I’m here. It’s my source of strength through good times and bad. Love is good manners and how we treat others. And so I’ll say, “So long, farewell…to you, and you, and you” (now that song really makes me cry!) The Eyes Have It W

e’re often attracted to people because of the color of their eyes. Beyond beauty, however, the colored part of the eye, or iris, is unique in its design and reveals much about a person’s past and current health as well as personality traits. Ironically, some of the most beautiful eyes belong to the unhealthiest people! Iridology is the study of health via an examination of the color and structure of the iris, the sclera, and the pupil. The iris is the most complex external structure of the human anatomy. It has a reflex connection to every organ and tissue of the body by way of the nervous system. The optic nerves are attached to the eyes and serve as communication pathways between the brain and the eyes. The optic nerves send visual information to the brain for processing and also relay information back from the brain to the eyes about the state of the organs and tissues in your body. The various markings and colorations of the iris can indicate acute or chronic health conditions occurring in the body, even those that have yet to manifest obvious symptoms. To analyze these markings, a special camera with microscope, called an iriscope, is used for capturing and enlarging the images. The left iris represents more than 90 areas of the left side of the body and the same correlation exists for the right side. The first recorded sources of iris analysis date back as far as ancient Babylon.

A qualified iridologist can help you recognize potential health problems at the earliest stage, giving you an opportunity to prevent illness and maintain optimum wellness. Based on the findings of your iris exam, the iridologist will suggest appropriate lifestyle changes including diet and exercise and will recommend specific herbs, vitamins, minerals or other supplements aimed at correcting the malfunctioning systems within the body. Dr. Susan Young, an internationally certified iridologist and PhD in natural medicine, recently relocated to Vero Beach and is now offering comprehensive iridology exams at Indian River Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine. Dr. Young combines her training in both physiology and iris markings to assess a patient’s health and restore balance to the body. Are You Prepared for Hurricane Season?

H

urricane season begins June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30. Storm predictions change each year, but the 2017 season was the costliest year in U.S. history with total damages close to $202.6 billion. For the 2018 season, we are expected to have 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, three of which will be major hurricanes (category three or higher). Here are some tips to better prepare you. Does your insurance policy provide adequate coverage? There are several considerations when answering this question. First, does your policy cover your home for the actual rebuilding cost in today’s market? Remember the rebuilding cost can be VERY different from the market value of your home. What is your deductible? Most homeowner’s policies in coastal regions provide a hurricane or windstorm deductible which is a percentage of the dwelling value. Make sure you fully understand the dollar value of this deductible. Many times, you can request a lower or higher deductible for a change in premium.

Do you have a flood insurance policy? Most homeowner’s insurance policies strictly exclude any flood coverage as it must be purchased separately. You will want to understand the flood zone where your home is located and determine the likelihood of flooding to occur. Don’t forget your personal property inside your home. It is recommended that you maintain an inventory of your belongings with any pictures, video footage and receipts. This is always helpful in the event of a loss in proving the value of your possessions. What happens when you can no longer occupy your home after a loss? Your homeowner’s policy should provide additional living expenses which would cover hotel, restaurant, etc. A typical policy will provide a limit that is 20 percent of your dwelling value, however, many times you can change this amount to better meet your needs. In addition to being prepared with adequate insurance coverage, each household should have a plan for potential evacuation and/or power outages in the event of a major storm. Remember to keep necessary supplies on hand such as batteries, flashlights, prescriptions, water, non-perishable food items, and a first aid kit, just to name a few. Now is the time to prepare! Vero Insurance can help ensure you’re prepared for hurricane season. Visit VeroInsurance.com for more information.

Partner Up to Spot Skin Cancer

W

edding season is right around the corner and what better way to start off a happy and healthy marriage than to get to know your spouse and their skin? Significant others are helpful at spotting new or changing moles and prompting their loved one to see a dermatologist. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, women are nine times more likely than men to notice a melanoma on another person’s skin. When checking your spouse’s skin, be sure to look at areas not exposed to the sun, such as under the arms, scalp, palms and bottoms of the feet. Talk about getting to know your significant other! A helpful tip for differentiating one’s normal moles from melanoma is a pattern that is different from the rest. As melanomas grow and develop, they take on their own form and grow differently than moles. Any area that easily bleeds or changes could be cancerous. While it can be difficult to

52

May-June 2018

distinguish skin cancer, seeing an area that is out of the norm from the rest of the body can be a signal to see a dermatologist to further evaluate. Today, we use our cell phones for everything. There are mole mapper apps that can help track skin changes and help identify new or changing moles. In addition to a romantic date night, how about a lustful photography session with your loved one to really get to know one another? A baseline set of photographs is one of the most helpful tools in our skin cancer clinic to help aid us in diagnosis of melanoma. Having a baseline set easily allows us to identify new or changing moles, which signals us to investigate further. Men tend to be hit harder when diagnosed with melanomas for a number of different reasons, but overall, they tend to be less inclined to protect themselves from the sun with sunscreen and sun protective clothing, so don’t be afraid to grab the sunscreen and rub them down! Being Here: A Story That Needs to Be Told

B

eing Here is a short film derived from a personal quarter-life crisis. Shortly after graduating from college, my life began spiraling out of control. I used alcohol and drugs to suppress how I was feeling, which drove me to have increasing emotional instability. With the help of my family and friends, I was sent to a rehabilitation facility where I received the help I so desperately needed. My experiences in rehab were heavy, complicated, and exhausting, but, without it, I may not be here writing this today. For the past three years, I haven’t been able to get the story of Being Here out of my head. I’m the director, writer and producer of this project, and my film is unique because no one has yet to accurately portray what happens in a rehabilitation facility, especially from the perspective of a young woman in her 20s. The story of Being Here is my story—a story I feel needs to be told. So many people of all ages and demographics struggle with mental health and addiction, and I want this movie to be for them. Being Here follows the life of Charlie, a young woman in her late 20s, as her three months in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility is coming to a close. Charlie resists moving on from rehab in fear of leaving her newfound safety net, but she is eventually propelled to leave when her best friend, Joy, 58 54

May-June 2018

experiences a personal tragedy. Charlie confronts her painful past and creates a new beginning for herself. We wrapped up filming at the end of March, and none of it would have been possible without the love and support from my hometown Vero Beach community. We created a highly successful crowdfunding campaign with the help of Vero Beach native, Chloe Rose. Her company, The Upswing by Chloe Rose, offers personal and creative full-service digital marketing and brand services to local growth-stage and established businesses in Vero Beach and beyond. Learn more at TheUpswingByChloeRose.com or find her on Instagram @the.upswing. The support I received from home was absolutely overwhelming and I’m so excited to have Being Here screened in Vero soon. I hope this is just the beginning of Being Here, as I will be using this short film to pitch a feature length version to production companies and investors in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Xaque Gruber and His Little Vero Film Go to Cannes

I

n March, history was made when artist/writer Xaque Gruber became the first Vero Beach filmmaker to have a movie accepted at Cannes, the world’s largest film festival. Gruber wrote, directed and produced “The Pistol,” a 10-minute comedy about two senior ladies who change their lives and move to Vero Beach. The theme of life changing and migrating to Vero is apt since it mirrors Gruber’s own life. A television writer for 13 years in Los Angeles, Gruber’s life detoured in 2015 when he received an agonized call from his mother in Vero Beach. Gruber recalls, “She desperately needed me to help her with my Dad, who was increasingly out of control because of Alzheimer’s Disease, and it was killing her.” So, Gruber put Hollywood on hold, and hightailed it to Florida. “But something unexpected happened to me in Vero,” says Gruber, “I became healthier, happier and more creative than ever. As exhausting and stressful as living with someone with Alzheimer’s can be, it wasn’t as exhausting and stressful as living in L.A. There’s a saying ‘bloom where you’re planted’ and that’s what I’ve done here.” In Vero Beach, while serving as his parents’ caregiver, Gruber painted his heart out resulting in his first Florida exhibit at The Artist’s Guild Gallery. 56

May-June 2018

He was hired to write for the Press Journal, and taught art at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, various area elder-care homes, and workshops at the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation. Since 2015, he has written several new screenplays to great reviews. “At a certain point, you want more than just the satisfaction of completed screenplays, you want your scripts produced,” Gruber explains. “So I called my friend, Mathias Fain, a brilliant cinematographer in L.A. and said ‘how about I write something and you shoot it? We can film in Vero for much cheaper than L.A.’ So that’s what we did with “The Pistol.” Gruber cast Isabel Garrett, Anne Talbot and Nick Keeler, three actors from The Vero Beach Theatre Guild in “The Pistol’s” three roles. Most of the 16-person crew were Floridians. “In 2018, I’ve had a hand in three short films, “The Pistol,” then a dramatic short I wrote was shot in L.A. called “SICK” about teen mental illness, and then a documentary short “Humans Of Vero Beach,” shot and edited by Kenneth George about my work with Alzheimer’s residents. That one will be in the Vero Beach Wine & Film Festival this June. Vero’s an excellent place to make films. I hope to make more here.” Acceptance of “The Pistol” to Cannes has already led to offers for Gruber to direct feature length films. “It’s bittersweet since my Dad is unable to understand it. And he’s why I came here, and ultimately, why this film exists. I wouldn’t have made it had I stayed in L.A. Life throws us unexpected curveballs, which can be scary, but in between dark times, there are gardens where incredible flowers can grow.” Learn more at XaqueGruber.com or follow him on

Creating a Delightful Event with Unique Style

“F

urniture has a way of speaking to you. It tells a story.” This is the mantra of designer and business owner, Valia Franceschi. Born in Venezuela, this new Vero Beach resident brings a fresh aesthetic to the Treasure Coast with her company, The Eventologie. Valia moved from Venezuela to Miami seven years ago. At the time, her sister Vera, a wedding photographer, needed unique furniture for a photo shoot. After searching all over the country for just the right piece, they realized the shipping costs alone wouldn’t be worth the expense. At that moment, Vera had a realization. Everything they needed was actually right in front of them. “Valia, all the furniture we need is in your house. You should just start a business!” So that’s exactly what she did. Along with her husband, Bogdan Marinkovich who joined the team one year ago, Valia decided to take her eye for finding vintage antique furniture and turn it into a business. And with strong connections here, including partner Olga Henriquez, a fellow Venezuelan who has been a Vero Beach resident for the past 15 years, this seemed like the perfect place. Valia describes Vero as a small town combined with the taste of people who have lived in a big city. “I love it here,” she says. “Location, good taste and close friends is why we chose Vero. We’re looking to expand our business to the north and Vero is a perfect crossroad to still serve Miami, where we have our clientele of five years.” She also sees an opportunity to bring her personal style to the event scene. Valia transferred all of her South Florida inventory to warehouses here in Vero and her collection is constantly growing. “I am always looking for new pieces. I love attending antique fairs up north.” The Eventologie’s antique pieces are restored and blend harmoniously with modern pieces to create a tailored look and feel. The Eventologie specializes in weddings, corporate and high-end events throughout Florida. Their sister company, Tasty Witness/TW Rentals, has been part of the wedding industry since 2013. With more than 20 years of experience, event design is their passion. The family owned business is looking forward to corroborating with local event planners, florists and other rental companies. “Our desire is to share a vision, offering the best of our curated rental pieces to create a delightful event with a unique style.” The Eventologie is located at 1101 18th Place in Vero Beach and will host an open house early this summer. To learn more about hiring The Eventologie, text Valia at (786) 262-0558.

Great Hair Days Start with Topknots by Jamie Lynn Written by CAMILLE YATES Photography by KINOSI PHOTOGRAPHY, KIM BOTTALICO

A

sk any woman what are the two most memorable days of their lives and most will respond saying it was their wedding day and giving birth. Having the right professional to ensure that everything runs smoothly for these lifechanging events is especially important. For 13 years, Jamie Lynn has been helping people look their best, not just for special occasions, but always. “I’m an artist of sorts, and I’m passionate about what I do,” Jamie says. For the last six years, she’s focused much of her time creating unique and glamorous hairstyles, as well as using her special touch with makeup to help brides look amazing on their wedding day. Her business is called Topknots by Jamie Lynn. “Styling up-dos is definitely my favorite thing and what I specialize in,” Jamie says. “I use my artistic ability to make women feel empowered and beautiful on such a big day in their lives. It brings me so much joy.” One of her most memorable occasions was when she styled hair and makeup for a bridal party of 12 in one day! “My perfect day would have never been so perfect if it weren’t for Jamie,” says Karen Hodge. “After our trial run (which was also my boudoir session), I messaged Jamie with some ideas. She was so sweet, accommodating and reassuring to me. She even went above and beyond to research some styles that she felt would be better tailored to my hair. When it came time for the big day, I had no stress whatsoever. I knew I was in the best hands I could be.” As for picking the style, Jamie starts with having a consultation with the bride. “Some of my brides come with a picture in hand of what they want, while with others, we discuss the style of their dress, the theme and feel of their wedding and/or special occasion,” Jamie explains. In addition to doing hair and makeup for wedding parties, Jamie also does quinceañeras, sweet 16 parties, proms, high school senior photos, family photos, Christmas parties, themed parties (Halloween and face painting), boudoir and general fashion shoots. A Beautiful, Glamorous Life

P

rofessional makeup artist, Maria Sommers, has been beautifying brides and clients in Vero Beach and surrounding areas for the past six years. Born and raised in Vero Beach, Maria discovered her love for makeup and all things glamorous early in life through dancing competitively with Dance Space, Vero Beach. “My love affair with makeup began at a young age when I took the stage at a dance recital,” Sommers says. “The relationship between dance and fabulous makeup was a mixture of creativity that made sense to me. I was hooked.” After graduating from Vero Beach High School, Maria went on to further her education at Flagler College in St. Augustine. She received Bachelors of Arts degrees in Communications with emphasis in Public Relations and Spanish. Returning to Vero Beach after college, Maria accepted a management position at Park Place Salon and Spa, a salon owned and operated by her grandmother, Rosemary Dronchi. Working in the beauty industry helped her realize that she could turn her passion into a career, and she went on to receive her skin care license from Indian River State College. She also attended classes with MAC Cosmetics, Stila and jane iredale. In 2016, Maria left Park Place Salon and Spa and started her own business as a professional makeup artist. Her specialties include makeup for wedding parties, special events, photo shoots and TV commercials. Health and beauty have always been important to Maria. She made the conscious decision to use clean beauty products, and committed herself to making her clients look and feel their best. “After a great deal of research, I found some amazing organic and mineral makeup lines of the highest and safest quality,” Maria says. “It’s important to me to pass on these beauty products for my clients to incorporate in their daily routines.” Maria follows her dreams and makes them a reality. Not only is she a successful makeup artist, she’s also a dance instructor at Dance Space. “It has come full circle for me and I am so grateful that I am able to do what I love.” Learn more at MariaSommers.com.

n our first anniversary, my husband, in keeping with tradition, gifted me paper— more specifically, a handwritten note recounting our adventures and journey together over those first 365 days. Above all he has given me over the last 10 years—aside from our children, of course—I treasure that inscribed snapshot of our lives. While memory may fade, it will remain preserved for our family to cherish long after we’re gone. That’s why, at Peach Leaf Paperie, there is no greater joy than weaving the tale of true love, motherhood milestones, or celebrating life’s unexpected moments through the gift of paper. Just shy of a decade ago, I founded the studio in the midst of my own wedding chaos. I didn’t want off the rack, run of the mill, staid stationery… I wanted something that spoke to our lives and set the tone for our special day—something that would be memorable and lasting. What began as a simple way to share our personal love story soon blossomed into a bustling studio focused on commemorating the most memorable occasions through heirloom designs. Balancing cutting-edge technique with traditional flair, our studio has fashioned everything from simple save the dates to custom logos and intricate laser cut wedding invitations nestled into boxes. Each custom suite is a labor of love, handcrafted and tailor made to match the heart and soul of each client. We create keepsakes and delight in the splash of watercolor, the luxuriousness of letterpress, the sheen of foil, and the way a simple sketch can tell a whole story. Peach Leaf Paperie‘s roots are in bespoke invitations, but our collections have branched out as life has evolved. Our inspired designs have expanded to cards, notes and other creative gifts such as custom wax seals, mugs and notepads that bear our hallmark fanciful sketches and distinct hand lettering. From cheeky nods to the perils of parenthood, whimsical mermaid prints, and fresh holiday greetings, there’s something for every occasion. Infusing frothy fun with a touch of sophisticated grace, our work celebrates the joy in every day. Joyfully growing invitations for life’s celebrations, Peach Leaf Paperie is an award-winning stationery studio located in sunny Vero Beach. From wedding invitations to greeting cards and gifts, there’s always a fresh take on what’s peachy keen.

our special day is approaching and you and your future spouse cannot imagine saying “I do” without your favorite pet in attendance. Before you decide whether that is really the best idea for all concerned, here are a few considerations. Your pet’s personality is of utmost importance and should guide your evaluation of his or her role at the wedding and the reception. Perhaps your

pet will be comfortable at one and not the other. Is he easily upset by loud noise or music? Does your pet like to jump up to greet people? Does he need to be near you at all times? Some pets are naturally nosy, others inherently shy. No matter how well trained, some may act out unexpectedly due to the stress of an unfamiliar environment. Rehearsing as much as possible with your pet is highly recommended. Most pets respond well to training with treats and positive reinforcement. Your pet’s natural inclination with strangers and children should guide your preparation of your pet for your special day. Will he or she cooperate for photos? Will he be comfortable wearing a doggie tuxedo, or being a ring bearer? Getting them used to some of the activities that will take place is beneficial. Accidents of all kinds should be anticipated, as well as the need for your pet to be walked. Keep a crate nearby, just in case. Remember, most pets are high maintenance no matter the breed. Utilizing a trusted handler or pet sitter may be the answer. If necessary, consult your veterinarian for medication to keep your pet’s anxiety at bay on your special day. Be sure to also consider your guests and their personalities as you evaluate your pet care options. Not everyone likes animals. Some may even be allergic to your pet. Alert them via the invitation that your celebration includes the presence of your pet so that precautions may be taken as needed. A review of indigenous plants found at the venue and any flowers that are being used will help ensure your pet’s safety against ingesting toxins and poisons. LIFE

Practicing Meaningful Philanthropy

E

ngaging in philanthropy—as an individual or as a family—can be a meaningful and transformational experience. When giving is connected to issues and values that are important to you and/or your family, it becomes more than just a gesture or a transaction—it becomes part of the fabric of your life. Purposeful and effective philanthropy can result in invaluable returns, but you may find it intimidating to get started, particularly if you aim to practice philanthropy as a family. Most individuals and families who are successful in their philanthropy invest time and effort in creating a vision and mission statement that helps them focus their giving. A philanthropic mission statement is particularly important for families with a family foundation or donor-advised fund, as these vehicles can continue from generation to generation.

When you give, you want your giving to count. To maximize the impact of your philanthropy dollars, you may want to consider: • Making It a Team Effort. Joining with others can help your funds go further. • Clarifying Goals. Decide whether you want to support immediate needs, long-term solutions or even endowments, which support causes in perpetuity. • Staying Engaged. Request reporting or communicate with the nonprofit’s leadership to monitor progress. • Measuring Success. Tying gifts to specific programs or initiatives enables you to determine your impact.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

WARNING FLAGS Water Closed to Public Agua Cerrada al Publico

REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their

territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

May is certainly the month for us to keep our focus on what we can control. There’s a new moon on May 15 and a full moon on May 29. Between these two dates, we will feel as if we can only move as fast as our feet can take us. Keep plugging along because June is a much more lighthearted month. Duck out from work whenever you can and enjoy spending time outdoors with family and friends before the deep heat of the summer hits. ARIES: Be careful what you say, text or tweet around May 7. There’s

a potentially volatile aspect that could wreak havoc with your communications. If you have to speak your mind, be skillful with your choice of words. Uranus, the planet of shocks (both good and bad) enters your area of finances on May 15. It’s going to be there for the next seven years, so get used to going with the flow. The full moon on the 29th heralds an exciting new development. This bright new energy continues into June. You’ll feel like being extravagant, but there’s a lot to be said for keeping things simple.

TAURUS: Something that’s been bothering you for months is finally

SCORPIO: You’re in overdrive during the month of May. Everything is

coming at you and you may feel like you live inside a pinball machine. The new moon on May 15 will be the perfect time to get out and meet new people. Towards the end of May, you’ll have to deal with unforeseen circumstances. Just watch your temper and realize not everyone is as fast and efficient as you are. Looks like you’ll have a lot of fun the weekend of June 9. If single, don’t stay at home. By June 19, you could receive some news that someone has noticed your talents and wants to work with you. Check out their background and make sure they are worthy of your time.

SAGITTARIUS: On May 7, you need to be ready to negotiate an

coming to the surface around May 16. Clear the air and get on with your life. Big decisions need to be made around the 18th. Best to talk things over with a trusted professional. You aren’t normally tempted to rush into things, so don’t start now. The weekend of June 9-10 is a wonderful time to spend time with loved ones. If you feel like people around you are very unpredictable during the last two weeks of June, you’re right. Being a solid and steady Taurus, you’ll be forced to hold space for others who need to blow off steam. Just make sure you deal with this extra stress by getting a good workout, or find a massage therapist!

important deal. No matter how irritating the situation might become, don’t hurry through anything. You’ve got to get into your comfort zone and allow things to play out the way they’re supposed to. Keep your focus on short-term goals. It might feel like two steps forward and one step back. May 29 brings a full moon in your sign so it looks like whatever you’ve been going through in May turns out better than you could have expected. With all the hard work of May behind you, June is your month to celebrate.

GEMINI: During the first week of May, you might be wondering if someone close to you is being completely honest. Your hunch might be correct but do some digging before you ghost them. A last-minute invitation around May 13 could end up being one of the most fun moments of your year. Be spontaneous and enjoy! June starts off with the heavens sending you terrific blessings. Enjoy this time, as you certainly have worked hard for all this good fortune. Just prepare for a bit of personal drama around June 25. Hold your ground and don’t let anyone talk you into doing something you really don’t want to do.

CAPRICORN: Try to get the bird’s eye view in early May. If you get caught up in the details of everyday living, you might miss the big picture, which looks very promising. Between the 12th and the 16th things could get problematic related to something that’s been irritating you for a few months. Keep your eyes on the end result because after May 19 you’ve certainly turned a corner and feel a lot more optimistic. Make sure you plan something fun for June 1-2. Mars goes retrograde on June 26, which could indicate plans going into reverse for a spell. Do what you can but don’t push too hard.

CANCER: The first week of May is wonderful for travel and broadening your horizons. Around the 6th you could meet someone who lives far away. This could be a powerful ally at a professional level, or perhaps a new romantic interest. Just don’t make any big decisions until after May 18. Venus, the planet of love, will be in your sign on the 19th. You’ll be pretty irresistible so enjoy all the attention. June is a month where you’ll feel like hunkering down with loved ones at home. Try not to get into arguments around finances. Your job is to stay calm and keep your focus on keeping the peace. On the 25th you might feel like being more generous than is necessary. Remember you have nothing to prove to anyone.

AQUARIUS: Early May is not the best time to get things accomplished. Just lay low and wait until mid-May before positive opportunities come your way. You’ve been waiting for months for a new path to appear and finally around May 19 a window or door will open. Don’t overthink this new opportunity. Trust your gut and move forward. June has you in a more relaxed mood. Enjoy the company of family and friends but watch your finances. Don’t go overboard being your usual generous self with everyone. Time to take care of yourself first.

LEO: Sudden changes could be on your career horizon around May 15.

You’ve been thinking about changing your job for a while and if a new opportunity arises, check it out. Recently, money has been preoccupying your mind, so looking for a new work situation isn’t a bad idea. During the first couple weeks of June, you won’t feel like doing much. It’s ok to tend to your home projects and get nestled in. By the time we get to June 25, you’ll be out and about, shining your light like never before.

VIRGO: Things might not go as planned around the weekend of May 12th.

Lay low and wait until the 18th before you make any sweeping changes to your life. You like things to be calm and orderly, but mid-May will feel a bit tricky. Just remember it’s only like the weather, and things will change. June is a much more lighthearted month. Someone quite charming might try to sweep you off your feet. If single, go with this woozy dreamy energy. But give it a few months to make sure it’s for real.

LIBRA: You’re not one to rock the boat, but in mid-May you might be

more impulsive than usual. If you have something to say, get it out. The new moon on the 15th will give you ample opportunities to clear the air and start fresh. The weekend of May 18 looks peaceful, so if you’ve been trying to carve out time to spend with loved ones, this would be an ideal time. Kick up your heels during the weekend of June 2. You’re under spectacular aspects, so enjoy yourself. Around June 19 you’ll have to adjust to situations that are out of your control. Be your normal balanced self and all will be well.

May-June 2018

PISCES: You’ll be charming everyone who crosses your path in the first

two weeks of May. Enjoy the attention but be careful not to let everyone into your inner circle. Make sure people prove they are worthy to be there. Trust your antennae above all. Remember, it takes time for people to reveal who they really are. A complicated business or legal transaction could become more challenging around June 19. Whatever roadblocks appear, just be willing to take detours and know that everything should calm down by June 30.
