Recently, we escaped for a little change of scenery to the island of Bimini for a weekend away. It was our first time crossing and it did not disappoint. The Bahamas are a familiar destination for many of our readers and residents of the Treasure Coast, but rarely is Bimini a consideration. Bimini is so close and convenient to get to. From Ft. Lauderdale, you have two options if you decide not to take your own boat. One is a ferry that gets you there in less than two hours, and the other is a seaplane charter, which just happens to grace our cover this issue. Obviously, the seaplane is the quickest mode of transportation but can cost a little more. No matter what commercial option you choose, both are very easy to jump aboard. The other option is to cross over on your own boat! Bimini consists of two tiny islands with great fishing and diving, not to mention the breathtaking beaches. Nightlife can be late night clubs at the local hangouts or the casino at Resorts World Bimini. We enjoyed spending our days lazily snorkeling off the crystal-clear beaches, relaxing at the hotel pool, and cruising the island by golf cart. Read on for more great things about Bimini in the following pages. Be sure and check out our featured photographer, Matt Gronlin, who really captivated us with his stunning shots of the island! Follow him on Instagram to travel through his len—he’s really amazing. Long-live summertime, please!

Summertime

Penny,

Reilly, & Alyssa Written by Penny Tranchilla | Photography by Miguel Urieta Where the Summer Never Ends

This time of year is hot, humid, and usually full of hurricane warnings, but we still love it! School is back in session, yet the days are still long, so there’s plenty of time to grab your board, fishing pole, or just the dog, and hit the beach late afternoon. It’s the beginning of lobster season, the mullet run, and so much more. Evenings at the beach this time of year are cooler and those sunsets are simply stunning! of the days of summer!

Bimini

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com September-October 2022 13

THE LOST CITY WHERE LEGENDS LIVE ON, IT’S CLOSER THAN YOU THINK...

No wonder Bimini was one of Hemingway’s favorite places to visit. It’s quiet, beautiful, and inspiring. The island is located just 50 miles off the coast of Florida and getting there has never been easier. Bimini is actually comprised of two islands, North & South Bimini. The airport is located on South Bimini, and you can take a ferry over to North Bimini. In addition to its pristine white sand beaches and gin clear water, the offshore waters are perfect underwater playgrounds for diving or sportfishing. In the winter months, the island is famous for shark diving with the great hammerheads and bull sharks that swim the Gulf Stream. For the experienced diver, there are drift dives along Victory Reef and the Continental Shelf. Don’t worry, there are lots of opportunities to snorkel around Bimini, too.

Escape for a weekend or a week, and you’ll find plenty of things to keep you busy or not… the island boasts world-class accommodations at Hilton’s Resorts World and Casino. You can relax by the pool with the swim-up bar as you enjoy a cold, refreshing Kalik, the beer of the Bahamas. Later, head up to the rooftop infinity pool and try one of the many island cocktails as you watch amazing sunsets. Another popular option is to jump on the resort tram or rent your own golf cart. Head over to the beach for a stroll along the pristine white sandy beaches, snorkel the crystal, clear water, or just relax in a cabana by the pool at the recently opened Resorts World Bimini Beach and Beach 360 Restaurant. Truly, the opportunities are endless. Renting a golf cart is a great way to explore the tiny island. There are many local eateries, and handmade craft markets throughout town. Make a stop at Fisherman’s Village located next door to the resort, which also offers great shopping and dining.

Resorts World Bimini also offers dockage if you decide to visit by boat. Fish offshore, then cool off poolside before you grab dinner at Tides, or hit the casino for late night fun. From fun in the sun to historic treasures, exploring and visiting with the locals is a real treat. Here’s some of our favorites:

> Eat with the locals. Grab a stool with a view and try a meal at one of our favorites! Sherry’s, CJ’s, Big John’s, and Mike’s offered everything from fresh conch salad to fried lobster and other specialties, along with great drinks!

> Radio Beach (my favorite) has pristine quiet beaches, great local food, and cold drinks!

Photography by Matt Grondin An easy dive for beginners, the SS Sapona offers the thrill seekers a chance to climb the bomb ravished structure and launch themselves some 30 feet below into the beautiful Bimini water.

One of the most popular activities to do while in Bimini also has an intriguing history. Tourists love to visit the SS Sapona dive site for snorkeling and diving. The SS Sapona was a concrete cargo ship originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson to transport troops in World War I. The SS Sapona only completed one war time transport, but she served many other purposes throughout her life on the sea. After her war duties ended, rumor has it that a well-known South Florida developer, Carl Fisher, bought the SS Sapona but only owned her for a brief time. His plans were to convert her into a private Miami floating club but that idea never came to fruition. The SS Sapona was used for oil storage instead. In 1924, ownership of the SS Sapona changed to Bruce Bethel, a prior war captain, who used her in his rum running business. The ship was relocated to the Bahamas, where he was a big player in rum running during the Prohibition Era. He too envisioned turning the SS Sapona into a floating nightclub or liquor storage to provide the east side of the U.S. with illegal liquors.

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com September-October 2022 21

Her story doesn’t end there. Prior to the onset of World War II, the U.S. used the SS Sapona as a training facility and the old ship became part of the military history once again. The Armed Forces used her for target practice day after day where fighter planes and bombers barraged her with machine guns and bombs.

Today, the repurposed SS Sapona is home to colorful local tropical fish and coral, and is one of the most popular diving and snorkeling destinations in Bimini. The famous ship sits in 15-20 feet of crystal, clear water or less, and is easy to get to by private boats or excursions.

However, in 1926, a destructive hurricane ripped through Bimini with winds in excess of 150mph which caused widespread death and destruction. Loaded with a stockpile of alcohol on board, the big ship was no match for a hurricane and the rough seas landed the SS Sapona aground on a reef where she has remained in the same spot to this day. With her front stern of the ship ripped away, most of the alcohol onboard was lost and her owner, Bethel, was never able to recover the financial loss.

Whether you arrive by private boat or yacht, plane or ferry, there are many things to do on the island of Bimini. Book your next vacay right way! Tropic Ocean Airways is just a quick 25-minute seaplane ride away or if you prefer to cruise over, Balearia Caribbean is Bimini’s fast ferry service. Both modes of transportation are offered out of Fort Lauderdale. For hotel accommodations, we prefer the Hilton Resorts World Bimini. For your next getaway, visit RWBimini.com to book your adventure to the pristine beaches and turquoise blue waters of Bimini!

Matt shoots above and below the surface. When he visits Bimini, it’s usually in the winter months where he can capture the amazing sharks that visit the area. His favorite places he loves to shoot are the Canadian Rockie and the Exumas… beyond beautiful! His best advice as a professional photographer is to learn everything you can about your equipment and perfect your photo editing. It makes a huge difference.

The Adventure Seeker

As a self-taught photographer, Matt’s style is moody and Hiscinematic.mostexciting shoot he’s ever done was shooting sharks. When you are in the water with sharks, you really have to be present in the moment even though you are in awe of these amazing creatures. His recent favorite shoot was getting to collaborate with Chelsea (@chelseakauai) in a recent dive in Florida’s springs. Matt was Instagram friends with Chelsea but never thought in a million years he’d ever get to collab with her on a shoot. He just happened to see on social media that she was going to be in Florida and needed a photographer. Opportunity knocked, Matt loaded up his van, drove 17 hours and dragged his dad along for the adventure. The photos turned out to be amazing and the experience is one he will never forget. Matt is an aspiring professional photographer that loves the thrill of the adventure. From the beautiful blue waters of the Bahamas, to the mountains of North Carolina, and everywhere in between, you’ll find Matt shooting with his Canon. His craft for photography happened when he borrowed a camera and just started shooting. Since then, he’s gotten better and better. His prior life before the lens was in the music industry as a musician, audio sound guy, and running a recording studio. He decided to change all that in 2019 and spend as much time as he can being a dad.

ur main editorial featured photographer, Matt Grondin, loves capturing adventure. His photographs always depict his latest travel through the eyes of his lens. He is drawn to the mountains for those cooler temperatures, but calls home a few times a year in the crystal, clear waters of the Bahamas. The images he captured of Bimini on one of his most recent trips made us want to explore the island ourselves.

Homeschool Ride the Wave

Identify goals. The goals I set for each of my boys often come from them. I sit down and ask what worked for them last year, what they enjoyed most, and what they want to learn more of this year. My youngest said, “learn more play-doh.” Perfect! My goal is to incorporate as much play-doh as possible this year! Make a plan. After gathering materials, books, and a variety of mediums for each topic, I create ways to present the information. We sing songs, paint, and play outdoors… the list is endless. This year we will practice French and Spanish over snack time. Next, determine how much time is needed for each subject. I arrange time-consuming subjects next to easy ones. Being a “creative,” I find it hard to stick to a rigid schedule. But I understand children need routine, so I make a schedule that is realistic and productive. For example, I like our afternoons free for errands, extra activities, or relaxation! Our schedule finishes by noon or 1PM. Plan your days realistically and enjoyably. Once you have made your plans, remember to be flexible. Some days are a little like me on my first wave. I crashed and rolled in the wave, but I got back up and made some adjustments; soon, I was riding to shore on top of the water! Whatever your goals and plans are, I hope you enjoy the ride!

“I ’m so nervous!” I said as I gripped the sides of a surfboard. My nine-year-old son has been taking surf lessons over the past few months. Normally, my five-year old and I cheer him on from the beach but because of a lapse of judgment, I now found myself paddling out through crashing waves. Ryan Cappelen, Surf Vero’s instructor, had encouraged a few of us moms to grab a board; he would teach us to surf. I was already regretting my decision as I bobbed up and down waiting for my first wave. “Ready?” He asked in his cool calm manner. It was too late to protest. He positioned my board and said, “ok, paddle!” I could hear and feel the rush of water behind me… there was no stopping now! The board was thrust into the momentum of a surging wave, I quickly tried to recall what I was supposed to do next… oh yes… jump up! Being a homeschool parent is not too different. The hustle and bustle of the school year building can be almost audible as it comes rolling in at the end of summer. As much as I try to plan during the summer, it's now that I’ve got to jump up and get specific about how I’m going to ride out the year… hopefully above water! Here are a few helpful tips I’ve gleaned over the years of homeschooling that have made life a little smoother.

Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit and a cover-up, too.

A 1987 New York Times article entitled, “Getting the Show on the Road” states that nobody likes packing. The best advice from the writer, Susan Heller Anderson, is “Lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then, take half the clothes and twice the money.”

Start gradually packing a week or so prior to departure. Be mindful of the greatest challenge—limited luggage space.

No matter where your travels take you, be safe, have fun, and look good!

Painless Packing

28 September-October 2022 Portfolio-VeroBeach.com THE LOCALS LIFESTYLE, ART & FASHION

Use a spare bedroom if possible so you can place your selected choices next to an open suitcase to achieve objectivity when assessing your selections.

Don’t forget your sunscreen and bug spray, and a wide brimmed hat is always a good idea. A waterproof beach bag, a good book, and your GoPro camera should also get tossed into the bag. If you’re traveling outside of the U.S. for your final destination, make sure you have your passport and know the latest travel requirements.

How to pack, when to pack, and what to pack can send a traveler into a maelstrom of confusion and inevitable panic as departure time nears. To avoid pitfalls, a traveler should devise a strategy which requires forethought and a dose of realism. When packing for a week-long island trip, it’s important to embrace the main objectives of being as comfortable, yet stylish as possible. Remember, the destination is most likely in a place that’s going to be hot, humid, hopefully sunny, and potentially buggy. Have you been talked-out of taking the trip so far? I hope not. First, write a list of what you expect to wear each day based on anticipated activities— swimming, beach-going, boating, sightseeing, and dining. Next, create a general list of everything you want to pack. Start putting together outfits from your wardrobe and be sure to do a little shopping of needed items from your list.

Don’t forget to pack cool, lightweight, light-colored SPF fabrics for sun protection and be sure to protect your eyes from the intense tropical sunshine with polarized sunglasses to cut the glare for better viewing of marine life. You may want to pack a mask and fins for snorkeling, too.

“Big game hunters” abound slipping in and out, searching for their particular passion. One lady hits town looking for flamingos, another business owner has a weakness for books and has found first editions. Others hunt old tools. You don’t need a wetsuit, you can be any age, the qualifier is: liking the serendipity of the hunt and having a sharp eye.

The Tambourine Shop managed by Jane LaFevers for 20 years, is considered by many to be the place to hunt for designer furniture. Many of their donations come from Johns Island on the beachside and the shop looks like a curated boutique with upscale furnishings, clothes, and accessories. Jane and her 35 loyal volunteers greet every customer that comes in, making it feel more like a club than a shop. It works; 28% of their customers come in daily, 50% come in weekly... that’s quite a following.

Not All Treasure is Buried I f you think all the treasure on our coast is from the sunken Spanish ships, you would be mistaken. Each day on our mainland, determined treasure finders start their engines and head to the many thrift stores in our county. Just like the divers who look beneath the waves, they aren’t sharing their coordinates. Barb and her husband have been hunting for over 30 years. Each Saturday, they find the perfect antidote to their 9-5 stressful work week in the blissful atmosphere and crowded aisles of different shops. One favorite is the VNA’s Hidden Treasures, also known as “Little Macys,” on Miracle Mile. It’s 10,000 sqft and filled to the brim with books, art, clothes, jewelry, and knick-knacks. Some shoppers come every day to visit manager, Megan Darley, and see what treasures she and her 76 plus volunteers have put on display. Some stay for a few minutes cruising and perusing. Others look for luxury leather goods, gold jewelry, Highwaymen art, designer clothes, rare books, and clowns. Yes, clowns. Whether Murano glass from the 60s, or art, one customer revels and buys anything “clown” as she was at one time, a clown. Megan has also been happy to see 18–25-year old’s playing “the game” and shopping at the thrift for Izod and Austin Reed vintage clothes, as well as XboxThen, games.there are the “flippers.” That’s what For the Love of Paws manager, Ted Pankiewicz Jr., calls the shoppers who come in to score deals and either sell the item online or at their own shop. He’s happy to see them, as they constantly buy and keep his inventory moving at their 12th Street store. Vero Beach is a mecca for thrift stores. Shoppers come from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Tampa to spend the day. It’s the quality of the finds that brings them in. A Turkish cannon from the 1700’s, an A.E. Backus giclee, or some Ficks Reed, or McGuire furniture.

There are a few things to note in preparation to notarize your document. Our staff does not provide any advice on the contents of your document. All questions regarding your document should be clarified by your attorney or creator of your document, and you should be fully aware of what you are signing. We are simply there to verify your identity and witness your signature. We may ask to take a glance at your paperwork to make sure there is a designated spot for a notary to sign. If there is no such printed designation, we may not be able to notarize the document since the proper legal wordage is not provided.

Our first question to you will be to provide a valid, not expired, photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport to verify your identity. If there are multiple people signing the document, all must be present and provide valid identification. Once we’ve recorded this information, we also need to record the type of document we will be notarizing. Many documents include information to be filled in, in addition to a signature and date. This information may be filled in prior to entering our store, but the signature and date must be left to complete in physical presence of the notary. Some documents also require witnesses in addition to the notary’s signature. If you have not arranged for witnesses to meet you at our store to provide signatures, on most occasions, we can provide witnesses. Stop by the farm on 33rd Street (just north and west of the mall) any time to pick up your produce. The farm operates on the honor system, making it convenient and easy for customers.

Trae and Blake Goodwyn own and operate Osceola Organic Family Farm with help from dedicated workers who believe in the organic way of eating. Trae and Blake purchased the farm from Kevin O’Dare who retired and wanted the farm to be with someone he knew would take care of it. The brothers grew up with Kevin’s son, Shawn, and attended St. Helen’s with him. The 10 ½ acre farm is all organic. Seeds are started in a small greenhouse, moved to a larger greenhouse, and finally to the ground. No pesticides or sprays are used making the farm totally dependent on the weather to succeed. The farm’s products are 80% lettuce (spring mix, romaine, bibb, micro-greens, arugula, pea shoots, sunflower shoots) and 20% other products (tomatoes, eggplants, zucchini, carrots, spring onions, edible flowers). We are also at the Vero Beach Farmers Market on Saturday’s. Our products can also be found at many of the local restaurants and clubs. We are excited to announce that we are now offering a farm membership for our customers. We're now open to taking pre-orders for our 2022/2023 season (October-May). Help fund the growth of Osceola Organic Farm through the purchase of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) membership shares in advance! You can buy membership for a month or season. More information is located on our website. We will be updating a list of planned vegetables for the spring, and fall seasons soon. Please note that each week's produce will consist of leafy greens, sprouts, and edible flowers with seasonal extras. After purchasing a CSA share, we will send you the CSA membership agreement to sign electronically. If the month or season you want is sold out, we may still have openings not listed online. If you would like to pay by cash or check, or would like to check availability, please contact us at osceolaorganics@gmail.com. You can also inquire about paying for a full year in advance, as well. By buying a subscription, you will receive the weekly organic produce grown by Osceola Organic Farm in Vero Beach, FL. The approach we use is organic and as we call it, “the way God intended food to be grown.” We combine our simple and sustainable approach to grow from healthy soil to healthy plants on the farm to create a source of fresh produce that is pesticide free, locally grown, harvested, and washed daily. By buying a subscription, you will be supporting a program that provides for our farm to grow healthy and nutrient dense food at its peak for you. If you are going to be away or unable to pick up your weekly produce, there is an option to donate one’s produce for the week to families in need. This program includes wines with little intervention, where the winemaker has allowed the terroir to shine in such a way that visiting Cobalt is a first-class seat to the best wineries. A rosé from Provence and the coastal breeze will leave you with the sensation of standing in a vineyard in the South of France; and a Brunello from Montalcino that will transport you to the sweeping countryside of Tuscany and make you wonder if those palm trees are actually cypress trees.

Born in Petoskey, Michigan, Erin was introduced to the restaurant world in 2010 when she helped her mom open a family restaurant, The Twisted Olive. The coastal Mediterranean inspired restaurant was such a success it spurred the interest of Master Sommelier, Ron Edwards, who created one of Michigan’s most unique wine lists for them. Through his guidance and training, Erin went on to get wine certifications. After a wine tasting trip through Italy with Ron, Erin realized that wine could be more than just a hobby, it could be a career. In the fall of 2017, Ron set her up with an internship on a Champagne Vineyard in Charly-sur-Marne, France, Baron Fuente. Erin felt as though her wine journey was coming full circle as Baron Fuente Rose Champagne had been her first introduction to alcohol back in 2012 and started her love of wine. She spent that fall in Champagne learning the ins and outs of production. During her time on the vineyard, she was exposed to the entire process of running a vineyard and brand, learning each aspect of making champagne. During 2020, Erin took the opportunity to complete her Wine Spirit and Education Trust Level 2 certification through the Napa Valley Wine Academy and begin her own wine collection to make the most of having more time at home. “I love wine because it encompasses everything I enjoy: food, travel, people, and nature. One of my favorite aspects of wine is the community it creates and how it brings people together. Every bottle of wine is an opportunity for a new story that will never be replicated, each one a beautiful memory to look back on fondly.” She also started a blind tasting group, a skill that she is working on perfecting as part of her preparation for her WSET Level 3 certification. Learning and growing is a core strength of Erin’s, whether that is through reading, continued education or tasting. Wine lovers of all levels will enjoy the knowledge Erin has to offer. T raditional beers are considered ‘carbonated' thanks to yeast production of carbon dioxide. These beers are usually supplemented with additional CO2 to achieve a desired crisp body and finish. Instead of supplementing with additional CO2, nitrogen is infused into the beer prior to packaging. This creates a much fuller, almost creamy mouthfeel, due to the fact that nitrogen gas is much heavier than CO2. The final result is an extremely smooth beer with a fuller body and pillowy, creamy finish. With rich flavor notes of milk chocolate, dark fruit and roasted coffee, this bold brew finishes smooth, creamy and is guaranteed to be a favorite of any dark beer or chocolate lover.

Over a quarter of U.S. adults now own a smart speaker and most use them daily as part of their routine. It is becoming increasingly popular to use voice assistant technologies over traditional user interfaces. Voice control has been embraced by all ages and genders. It is not just tech enthusiasts who have adopted voice as a means of gathering information and controlling the home. “Voice control has simplified the operation of complicated systems,” says Brett Ringeisen, Director of The Audiohouse. “It is being embraced by all ages and genders for its simplicity and is recognized as a solution for those with poor vision, mobility, or a fear of technology.”

Josh.ai Voice Control Operate All Your Home Hands-FreeTechnology—

We have all been there—with wet hands, full arms, juggling five things at once or just in the middle of something when the doorbell rings. Or, inevitably, we need more light, or would like to change the channel on the TV, or switch to a new song. Sure, we could stop what we are doing, free ourselves to get to the various controls but it is easier, faster, and way more convenient way is with voice control to tell our home to handle the task. Voice control is a more emotional, fluid way of controlling your home electronics.

Continual Refinements Create Better Experiences

In the beginning, voice assistants and smart speakers sometimes struggled to hear users’ verbal requests, often misinterpreting the commands and only responded to particular phrases. Moreover, these commands could control only a few select smart home devices. The systems have been engineered to improve intelligibility with advanced speech recognition engines and are designed to integrate with many popular home control systems. Saying “I’m home,” can now command several devices at once—turning on the foyer light, adjusting the thermostat, opening the living room shades and selecting a favorite song. Voice control platforms have eliminated the need to tap buttons on a smartphone or tablet to retrieve music, find a keypad in the dark to turn on the lights or type information with your remote control to find a particular movie to watch.

Is Security and Privacy at Risk?

Josh.ai voice control device installed in the wall.

Josh.ai Delivers a Simple, Magical and Private Way to Interact with Your Home Unlike the big tech voice control systems, the Josh. ai voice control system is designed to control your home technology while not compromising your privacy or selling you something. Voice control is definitely a viable control option for the home and a great way to make things more readily accessible and easier to use. Stop by The Audiohouse today for a demonstration on how it simplifies control of the technology in your home. For more information, visit TheAudioHouse.com, or call (772) 562-3767. As great as voice control is, the one big concern is security and privacy, which ranks as the primary reason why people are leery of the technology. Amazon, Google, and Apple make inexpensive devices that one can use to control the home’s subsystems. These mass market, DIY voice assistants and smart speakers typically lack robust security features and can be a potential gateway for hackers. This is the reason why The Audiohouse recommends the Josh.ai voice control system as a better option. Engineered from the start with advanced privacy features, the Josh. ai platform offers a more comprehensive and secure alternative to Google, Amazon, and Siri options.

Voice Control–Gaining Momentum

W e are all very familiar with asking Alexa or Google to play a song or order something online. However, voice control in the home has evolved to so much more and is now a simple, hands-free way to operate all your home technology.

At The Audiohouse, we are experts at controlling lighting, shades, air-conditioning, the garage door, locks, and entertainment systems with remote controls, touchscreens, and keypads. Now, there are a wide variety of voice-control devices—interactive voice assistants and smart speakers from Josh. ai, Apple, Amazon and Google—that can control your home while allowing you to be hands-free.

of colors and finishes that are more unique than stainless and also have the benefit of not showing every little fingerprint the way stainless does. For a very unified look, consider having your dishwasher and/or refrigerator finished with cabinet paneling on the outside that matches the rest of your cabinetry. It’s not the cheapest choice, but it always looks chic. Lastly, consider countertops. Replacing them entirely is quite a project, but some countertop materials can be refinished. If you’re a fan of your stone countertops, now would be a good time to schedule a resurfacing if you have issues with stains or if your countertops have lost their original sheen. Firstly, we all know that a kitchen reno is costly, but don’t think you have to gut everything and start over from scratch to create a new look. Think about the details: even just changing the drawer pulls and handles on your cabinets can make a surprisingly dramatic visual difference and update the look of a kitchen. Adding or changing a backsplash can also make a dramatic change and can be completed relatively quickly and inexpensively. So, what can you catch during the mullet run? Everything wants in on the action, both inland and nearshore; sharks, jack, redfish, flounder, and trout. Amongst the wide array of species that feed on this baitfish, the most sought-after are tarpon and snook. The tarpon have patiently awaited the migration since the beginning of July. Conveniently, snook season opens on September 1st, making it one of the best times of the year to catch them.

ast Coast fishermen have long awaited the return of the fall months for one good reason: the mullet run. September and October are prime months to catch this massive migration along the east coast of Florida. Hundreds of schools travel from the Carolinas along the Atlantic coast. Along the way, awaiting them are each region's predators; tarpon, snook, redfish, and sharks. Once the schools reach the south point of Florida, they head offshore for spawning in the Gulf Stream. Sizes of the mullet vary throughout the run, from fingerling to full grown. The lifespan falls between 4 to 16 years and maturity is attained around 3 years of age. Adults grow at the rate of 1.5 to 2.5 inches per year. The weather plays a big part in the run, as storms or big swells can alter the course of their migration. It’s not uncommon for this coastal species to enter the ICW through inlets, making it an opportune time to fish from the beach or nearby jetties and piers. Some years are better than others. After all, fishing is heavily dependent on several variables. Putting the time in and consistently checking spots is key to the mullet run. This will lead to your success in landing fish in good numbers.

Remember, FWC requires you to carry a snook permit attached to your fishing license to keep slot snook. Slot sizes are 28”-32” pinched tail, 1 per person. Most anglers await the run to witness fish going airborne on sizable pods of mullet, corralling them in the surf or against jetties. This provides your best opportunity to catch fish on large topwater/suspended lures, or mullet, whether you prefer fishing live bait or artificial. Book an inshore or nearshore charter by visiting CaptainGoopCharters.com, or contact Spencer Reilly directly at Spencerfishingvb@gmail.com, or call (772)-696-6025. Winter Warblers

Our First Snowbirds

T hough as I write this excerpt, it is early August and the dog hot days of summer are upon us with birds still around. Yes, one would be thinking more in lines of the larger birds like herons, egrets or shorebirds and pelicans. Well, this time of the year we start seeing many species of migratory birds arriving from wherever their summer homes have been. It does seem like a very short migration, but not all of them leave at the same time. So, we might be seeing the first wave of these smaller birds that would spearhead the great migration once temperatures begin to drop up in the more northern American regions. With that said, it has been such a delight to start hearing and then finding the Black-and-white Warblers, Mniotilta varia. Their original name was black-and-white creeper because of how they would creep up and down branches looking for insects to eat. This species being of the Mniotilta family, it is the only one and is referred to as ‘moss plucking.’ It is also successful finding insects in the bark of trees and having a longer back toe and claw enabling them to work the tree branches so well. Whoever was on the bird naming teams as these species were being observed many moons ago, it would have been nice that all birds had simpler names based on what their plumage looked like! The Black-and-white Warbler is of the wood-warbler family, Parulidae, which are most known for their colorful array of plumages. They are of ‘low risk’ to the birding world of species of being watched for potential extinction. They can be observed throughout most of north America, east of the Rocky Mountain range, and during the spring migration up to northern Canadian regions. In the fall migration, they are they observed through Mexico, the Caribbean, and to south American regions. One thing that amazes me, is this species nests on the ground near the trunk of a tree and disguises the laid eggs in a make-shift nest covered by leaves. The female will typically lay between 4 to 6 eggs per season. Featured in the attached picture is a female. While these little birds are frequently hard to see, I hear them well before I see them. When I am looking for them, weighing in at no more that 0.5 ounces, I am always looking for the black-and-white small bird flicking around in the tree branches, but most importantly upside down. You got it, they will forage and most commonly rummage about a tree on cue for their next meal upside down. Sounds silly, but not all insects are on the top side of branches, many even like spiders are on the underside which birds have figured out. Next time you are near or under a hardwood tree, listen for the clicking sound they make and look up to see if you can find one of them. When looking for these cute little colorful birds, be on the lookout for similar birds as well. Safety in numbers when you are a bird, especially a smaller bird. To learn a bit more about these birds, never hesitate in looking them up on Cornell’s website at AllAboutBirds.org. Little Bahama Bank Rare Pillar Coral Lives on Sugar Wreck

On the Sugar Wreck, the pillar coral is shallow enough for most people to enjoy snorkeling or freediving. You can also often catch glimpses of stingrays, nurse sharks, eels, a resident hawksbill sea turtle, lots of different reef fish and sometimes, a couple of Caribbean reef sharks. Apparently, colonies of this marine invertebrate can also be found on Pickles Reef in the Florida Keys and in the Dry Tortugas National Park, too. Next time you’re in the water, be sure to keep a lookout for this rare find.

Unfortunately, in 2014, pillar coral was listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Like coral reefs around the world, pillar coral faces threats due to global climate change. Additionally, they are susceptible to diseases, like Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease, as well as destruction from boat anchors, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It’s possible they are functionally extinct on the Florida Reef as scientists cannot locate any juveniles, according to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.

A long the western edge of the Little Bahama Bank off Grand Bahama Island, the 100-year old remnants of a molasses barge, called the Sugar Wreck, rests in just 20-feet of water, teeming with marine life. It’s home to one of my favorite colonies of coral too, a giant formation of pillar coral (Dendrogyra cylindrus).

56 September-October 2022 Portfolio-VeroBeach.com THE EXPLORED NATURE, TRAVEL & SPORTING

Like all corals, pillar coral is a type of animal. It’s one of the few that feed during the day, which gives it a fuzzy appearance as the little brown polyps extend their tentacles to catch tiny particles in the water column. When the polyps retract, the visible skeleton has a series of meandering ridges and valleys that resembles brain coral.

As the name suggests, pillar corals emerge from the seafloor like cylindrical branches resembling fingers from a single fixed base. They can grow up to 10-feet and have the important job of providing habitat for fish and marine life, but also reducing energy from storm surge as it approaches shore. This unique hard coral occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. I’ve spent years revisiting this particular colony during my time as a field biologist with the Wild Dolphin Project. I didn’t realize how special it was to see this rare species until I started learning more about it.

he Marine Cleanup Initiative, Inc. (MCII), has been helping the St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program sink steel ships since 2017, with the deployment of the Tug Kathleen. Since that time, MCII has helped the program sink five additional vessels: Voici Bernadette (CCA-Curtis Bostick Reef), Tug Singleton (Blake Charron Foundation Reef), Aftersome Reef, Last One (Patrick Price Reef), and Spirit of Palm Beach (Daymaker Charters Reef), with a 7th boat on the way. The Time, a 126-foot motor vessel built in 1987, will be brought from Willis Custom Yachts in Stuart to Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce, where it will be cleaned meticulously by McCulley Marine Services and then deployed on St. Lucie County’s Fort Pierce Sportfishing Club artificial reef site.

SinkingHowellsShips Make Great Reefs St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program

T

MCII has gradually taken on more responsibility for these deployments from publicizing the deployment of Tug Kathleen to collecting all the funds necessary for cleaning and deploying the Time. Deployment costs for reefing vessels are fairly standard but the costs for cleaning and preparing ships vary from one boat to another. This is because cleanup must be meticulous, meeting the standards of both the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. First, crews dispose of all trash and floatable debris. Then, engines and machinery must be removed along with fuel and hydraulic lines. Removal of asbestos and heavy metals must also be completed as it makes no sense to create a fish habitat that will be harmful to aquatic life.

Subject to St. Lucie County Board approval, The Time will become the A.A. Hendry Reef, named after a 19th century pioneer on the Treasure Coast, Archibald Alvin Hendry. Archibald Alvin ‘Arch’ Hendry was born Aug. 18, 1857 in Hillsborough County, Florida, the second of eight children. His parents, Archibald and Mary Ann Hendry had initially settled in Tampa. The ten family members of the Hendry family relocated to Fort Pierce in 1872, south of Ten Mile Creek, as pioneer cattle ranchers, homesteading about 160 acres. The Time, like many of the vessels deployed on the Treasure Coast, will be deployed in fairly deep water. Vessel reefs on the Treasure Coast are typically unstable in waters shallower than 150 feet unless they can be ballasted with many tons of concrete. After she is delivered to St. Lucie County, stability analyses will be performed on the Time If enough concrete can be added to make her stable at shallower depths it will enable divers to also enjoy this reef. If the Time must be sunk deeper than 150 feet, it will allow for deep water fish and habitats to flourish. The Oculina Banks is a deep water (greater than 200-feet) coral habitat extending from northern St. Lucie County through Indian River County to Port Canaveral. First discovered in the 1970s, the Oculina Banks are named after the ivory tree coral (Oculina varicosa) that makes up this habitat. Although highly impacted by trawling since its discovery, the Oculina Banks was an important spawning ground for deep water fish, such as scamp (Mycteroperca phenax) and snowy grouper (Hyporthodus niveatus). The St. Lucie County Artificial Reef Program is attempting to develop a protocol for restoring the ecological functions of the Oculina Banks by deploying vessels like the Time in deepwater. Ivory tree coral has been shown to recruit to steel vessels offshore St. Lucie County in depths as shallow as 150 feet.

F2-Isoprostanes - gauges the amount of oxidative stress in the body. High levels may cause blood vessels to narrow, leading to higher blood pressure. F2-Isoprostanes can promote blood clotting which increases risk for heart attack or stroke.

Lp-PLA2 - reflects inflammation levels in the arteries due to build-up of cholesterol. When LDL gets into the artery wall, the body tries to rid of it by making Lp-PLA2. Risk increases as Lp-PLA2 levels increase.

To assess your cardiovascular risk through Cleveland HeartLab’s advanced testing, contact Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine for a consultation. Consults can be done in-office or via Telehealth. Results of testing will be used to recommend diet and lifestyle modifications along with nutritional supplements to help reduce inflammation.

ApoB - the primary apolipoprotein found on the surface of LDL (the carrier of “bad” cholesterol), VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) and Lp(a) (lipoprotein (a)). ApoB specifically regulates cholesterol influx into tissues.

Call (772) 564-8383 or visit IndianRiverAcupuncture.com for more information.

You Should Know About T he

ApoA1- the major apolipoprotein of HDL. It promotes cholesterol efflux, the process by which cholesterol is transported from the artery wall to the liver for excretion. Oxidized LDL - measures LDL that has been damaged by oxidative stress due to poor lifestyle habits. Oxidized LDL is more likely to invade the walls of your blood vessels and increase risk of heart disease.

Cardiovascular Risk Lab Tests long-held belief that total cholesterol is the best measure to assess risk for adverse cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke is about as antiquated as a rotary dial phone. Even though statins are widely used to drive down cholesterol, low cholesterol is not guaranteed to prevent heart attack or stroke. Research has shown that these events occur because of inflammation in the arteries, not solely because of cholesterol build up. To obtain the most complete picture of risk, specific cardiovascular inflammation markers must be measured in conjunction with routine lipid tests. Cleveland HeartLab’s advanced cardiovascular testing has won numerous awards and is supported by over 100 peer-reviewed articles. A study published in the Journal of Medical Economics reported that Cleveland HeartLab’s inflammation testing could reduce the average heart attack and stroke rate by approximately 10%. The labs are performed by Quest and are covered by most insurance companies and Medicare. Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine has partnered with Cleveland HeartLab to offer this testing. Below are some of the important cardiovascular risk tests available now.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) - measures the body’s response to damaged lining of blood vessels that have become thinned, cracked and unstable due to cholesterol accumulation and inflammation. Risk for heart attack increases as MPO levels increase.

Beyond Cholesterol

HDL Function Panel (HDLfx Test) - new test developed from clinical research led by James Januzzi, MD, a Harvard Medical School Cardiologist. The HDLfx Test measures how effectively HDL carries cholesterol to the liver for elimination. HDL is known to be cardioprotective because it has anti-inflammatory and anti-clotting properties, but simply having high levels of HDL has not proven to reduce rates of cardiovascular events. Januzzi’s research demonstrated that HDL must function properly to offer a protective benefit.

People practice for all sorts of reasons but most would agree, inner peace is where it’s at. Yes, this practice takes time, takes patience, takes commitment and consistency, but don’t all good things require that? The only way of achieving this is fostering it. This doesn’t mean there won’t be rush hours you find yourself in, or that you won’t encounter frustrating moments, it just means you are better equipped to “ride the wave” and to enjoy island time. My recommendation? Stay. Stay seated, stay with your breath, stay with the noise, just stay. This is a step-by-step process. Day by day, moment by moment. We did not get here in a day and the fruits don’t come the day you plant the seed. After all, this is a practice to cultivate, precisely being able to “ride the wave,” whatever the wave may be. In time and with practice, the noise will subside, grow softer, and ease up. With consistent practice, eventually, you will find yourself noticing changes. Subtle ones, if you’d like, but the type of changes that make all the difference. For example, taking deep breaths for the gusto of it, or the ability to pause before you respond instead of impulsively reacting, or choosing to do one thing at a time, more often even noticing the color of the sky more or birds chirping around you. You’ll even be running around and suddenly stop yourself and ask, “what’s my rush?”

On Island Time

P icture this… you’re lying on a deserted beach, under sun, things flowing like the waves that come and go. Sounds like paradise. We can’t always do this. Heck, there are years we don’t even get to it. Life carries us away, with the duties, responsibilities, to-do lists, kids, work, commitments, life… it’s a funny thing. But what if we could find that common ground where we are not feeling like we have to run from life to an island (as tempting as it sounds sometimes) and are able to bring ourselves back, here and now. A harmony of sorts.

A mindfulness practice is not the answer to everything (or maybe it is), but it is a great starting point. Throughout my time of practicing, I have learned a lot about the practice, the evolution of it, and the benefits it can bring to your life. There are difficult days, but with consistency, island time is a reachable place. Connecting with your breath can be hard. We are so distracted by everything going on outside of us, that the first attempts can be frustrating. We have thoughts surging and flooding us, but this has an explanation. You see, when we are cultivating attention, all the things we haven’t paid attention to, all the things we’ve brushed off, or decided to ignore, come through. This can be the greatest challenge and almost always the number one reason I hear from people who choose to not continue.

We have been in a bull market that has gone on a while and every bet seemed to pay off. What we have now simply may be the natural culmination of a decade long bull run, or instead of a culmination, it may just be a pause. So, why is everything retracting now? Basically, because it went up a lot and because it represented the pinnacle of risk appetite. You never quite really know until you look in the rear-view mirror. We are not fans of market timing. If you took the approach of selling 6 months after the high and buying back 6 months after the low, you would have lost every decade except 2000-2009. We use the 6 months because we know that no one can perfectly time the high and the low, so you get back in when it feels right. But you can’t stake your investments and your retirement on a gut feeling. That is why a rules-based approach and the advice of a financial professional are so important to your success. So if you feel that you should do something, engage a rules-based approach

Between the constant connectivity and talking heads on your 24-hour news network of choice, we are being told the world is getting worse. A multi-year pandemic, inflation, formula shortages, and war in Ukraine. With everything going on in the world, you may feel a little jittery. You just feel like you should do something, but let’s take a step back and put some perspective on it.

I n over three decades of being investors and stewards of our clients' money, we have witnessed a lot of market downturns, and each time we find some of our clients might be tempted to think “this time it is different.” Remember, it was Solomon who said, “there is nothing new under the sun.”

You are always welcome to schedule an initial consultation. Enjoy your late summer days and enjoy life!

Morgan Housel (quoted above) has a really great perspective on finance and investing, and if you have not read his book, “The Psychology of Money,” we highly recommend it. One of the things he talks about is the post-WWII era, starting around 1946, and he lists every major stock market decline, every major world event that was attached to those, and essentially he says, during this whole entire period, here are all the horrible, terrible, bad, not so good things that happened. Oh, and by the way, during that time, the stock market rose 1100-fold. Sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Good summer "read."
