Cruising…

B

iking is one of my favorite pastimes. Whether it’s cruising our beaches or the backwoods of Florida’s most scenic landscapes, there are so many options for all riders to choose from. Personally, I enjoy the scenery more than the adrenaline rush when riding my mountain bike. There’s nothing better than pedaling through a beautiful pine forest or discovering hilly terrain in our seemingly flat state. Locally, we take our bikes to Savannah Preserve for an easy morning or late afternoon ride. You can’t beat the stunning views of the trees reflecting on the water, listening to the wildlife, and enjoying the music the pine trees make swaying in the wind. Heaven! I absolutely love this time of year in Florida. It’s still warm enough during the day to feel like summer, minus the intense humidity. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful place with a great climate. This is the perfect time to get outside and explore Florida’s many mountain biking destinations. This issue is packed with information on where to find the best trails throughout the state. Some locations are nearby and others might call for a weekend road trip. It’s fun for the entire family. Most of the trails offer beginner to advanced options, depending on your comfort and skill level. Most importantly, be sure to wear proper safety gear, stay well hydrated and have a blast! Release that inner child and enjoy the ride! Write to me and tell me of your mountain biking adventures or share some of your favorite places you’ve explored. I’d love to hear all about it. As crazy as this year has been, it’s also been a time to slow down, spend more time outside with family and enjoy the simple things in life. Often, those little things are the best things!

Get Outside & Enjoy the Ride Discover Florida’s Epic Mountain Biking Trails

F

lorida is known primarily for its gorgeous beaches and adventure theme parks; however, there’s a playground with inspiring nature views and heart-pumping “roller coaster” rides on two-wheels for you to discover. There’s no better time to enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation and the exploration of our state’s numerous bike trails is a perfect diversion from these uncertain times. Biking is a healthy activity for both the body and mind, which contributes to its growing popularity. Those of us living in the Sunshine State have the advantage of year-round riding weather. It might come as a surprise to learn that Florida, designated as the flattest state in the country, has made a name for itself with more than 1,500 miles of mountain biking trails for riders of all ages and skill levels. In fact, according to the International Mountain Bike Association, Florida boasts two of the nation’s top mountain bike destinations: The Santos Mountain Bike Trails, nestled in the wooded pines of the Ocala National Forest. Its the first trail system to be recognized as an International Mountain Biking Association “Epic” trail, known as Bronze Ride Center. The second Epic trail is found in Alafia River State Park bordering the Alafia River, located 30 miles southeast of Tampa. Aside from being both physically challenging and rewarding, my husband and I have found mountain biking to be one of the best ways to experience tropical landscapes, forested ecosystems and diverse wildlife. While Florida is not a mountainous region, our state’s mountain bike trails can be highly challenging with steep inclines and technical descents, as well as jumps and man-made features. After an intense climb up a hilly trail through a tropical forest, there’s no comparison to the rush of a flowy downhill run past live oaks and high reaching pines. For novice riders, many of Florida’s mountain bike trails offer laid-back riding opportunities for beginners or young families. As you venture out on Florida trails, you can look forward to riding among scenic lakes, past historic sites, through mysterious cypress swamps, and gain exclusive access to beautiful remote locations. The tree-lined canopies are home to a great variety of Florida’s native wildlife species. During an early morning ride, you might catch a glimpse of a white-tailed doe keeping watch over her new fawn, playful river otters, or an alligator sunbathing along the trails. If you’re new to mountain biking or don’t own your own bike, we recommend renting one from your local bicycle shop. A trained bike technician will assist you in choosing the best size and type for you based on the style of biking you wish to pursue. Be sure to take full advantage of the many bikes offered for test riding. If a new bike is not in your budget, knowing which bike is right for you will help you find a good, used bike locally or online. For some, despite having the ideal bike, mountain biking might seem a bit intimidating. Attending a skills workshop through your local bike shop or mountain bike club will boost your self-confidence and knowledge of the fundamentals. Once we learned skills such as maneuvering turns and body positioning, our experience was much safer and more rewarding. In addition, joining a chaperoned group ride through a bike club can be a valuable introduction to the trails and supportive mountain bike community. Your fitness and confidence levels will increase with each ride, and the beginner trails will become easier. You’ll be blazing more challenging trails in no time! With often unpredictable terrain, mountain biking does come with some risks, but you can reduce the chance of injuries with safety equipment including a properly fitted helmet, eye protection, hydration and a first-aid kit. We bring along other necessities such as trail snacks, gloves, a multi-bike tool, phone with downloaded trail maps and spare inner tube to complete our preparation for any unforeseen emergencies. Whether you’re seeking to simply relax in nature, or an intense adrenaline rush, mountain biking might be your new favorite pastime. Read on for a list of our top 5 favorite MTB/Off-road trails in Florida offering unforgettable riding adventures. Be safe and enjoy the ride!

A

s a native of sunny Florida, I’m a nature lover with a thirst for adventure. I have always loved exploring locations by foot or bicycle. I currently live with my family in Sebastian, Florida, where I enjoy spending time outdoors in our local parks or on the beach. I’ve always been drawn to and inspired by the images of renowned travel and landscape photographers. About a decade ago, my passion for photography really took hold. I was moved to learn how to photograph and capture the beauty, texture and emotion of the natural world, from the soothing feeling that being in nature produced in me. From the beginning, my concentration was on landscape and portrait photography and my eagerness to develop my skills led me to search out local classes, attend workshops and spend hours on Creative Live, an online platform, to learn how to bring an image to life. After experiencing Florida mountain biking on a camping to trip to Jonathan Dickinson State Park about five years ago, my husband and I were hooked. Since then, we have sought out destinations and biking experiences that have taken us places as high as the Canadian Rockies to the tropical islands. This has moved me further to create and communicate our experiences through my images. My pursuit of new places and experiences motivates me to continually develop my creative expression. I’m always mentally composing images, so I tend to shoot everything. My goal is to hone my vision, create a personal style and continue to grow and learn. I’m truly humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work on this project with Portfolio and share my love for photography, nature, and mountain biking.

Heathcote Botanical Gardens:

The Art of Bonsai

utterflies, palms, herbs, flowers, winding paths, old trees, vegetables, cycads and koi can all be found at Heathcote Botanical Gardens. It’s an oasis of tranquility, timelessness and peace on Savannah Road off US 1 in Fort Pierce. It’s a place of green magic which heals the heart and calms the soul. One of its most popular attractions is the James J. Smith Bonsai Gallery which features the largest public tropical bonsai collection in the United States. A mecca for bonsai enthusiasts, the 100 plus trees on display will thrill you with their extraordinary trunks which have been twisted and schooled to look like large trees. The gallery is curated by Tom Kehoe, who for the past three years has worked 8-10 hours a week at Heathcote giving loving “haircuts” to his green leafy children. Tom was a student of Bonsai Master, Jim Smith, who left his trees to Heathcote. Bonsai trees need care and often become an obsession for their caretakers. In fact, Tom admits to tunnel vision with the trees and that they must be “trained ruthlessly” to grow into the pleasing green forms that people enjoy seeing. Each month there are classes and sessions to learn more about the 32

secrets of bonsai. The Bonsai Bash is an annual spring fundraiser and two of the Heathcote bonsai have been accepted for display at the annual Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. If growing bonsai isn’t your thing, you can host weddings, meetings, garden teas, anniversary parties and other events at their facilities. You can volunteer to be part of the Garden of Lights event during the holidays. More than 10,000 people visit Heathcote to see this enchanting evening illumination of the garden. Give garden supplies, attend the plant sales, become part of the refurbishment of the Japanese Garden or donate a brick to remember a friend or commemorate a date. There is an adorable gift shop with an ambassador cat named Hilgi. Heathcote brings people of all ages together to celebrate the green, the growth and nourish the good in all of us that blossoms along the paths of this beautiful garden. Ballet Vero Beach:

The Nutcracker Outdoor Production to Be Broadcast for Free

B

allet Vero Beach is thrilled to announce an antidote to the cancelling of Nutcracker performances across the globe this holiday season. The company, which is the only professional dance company between Orlando and West Palm Beach, filmed a portion of their beloved local take on the classic ballet, Nutcracker on the Indian River, outside this fall. This month, the film will be released for free viewing to inject a healthy dose of holiday magic into our community and beyond. Partnering with the Indian River Land Trust, The Indian River County Historical Society, and Ballet Vero Beach’s sister company, Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami, the film was shot in multiple locations around town. It features a cast of 16 professional dancers and 12 student performers from both Riverside Theatre’s dance education program and Ballet Vero Beach’s own community engagement initiatives. Filming was no small undertaking with socially distanced rehearsals in both Miami and Vero, site prep at three separate Indian River Land Trust Properties and the historic Hallstrom House, as well as the construction of a custom 40’ by 40’ sprung dance floor with a painted hard board topper (or skin) designed to both allow the dancers to execute intricate choreography in the wilderness and also allow the characters to blend in with the natural world. A cross section of community partners have donated much needed funds to ensure the company was able to offer the film at no cost to the general ublic. An internet release date of December 23 has tentatively been set with media partner TV-30 set to offer television broadcasts in both English and Spanish throughout the holiday season.

34

November-December 2020

The stage production of Nutcracker on the Indian River had its premiere by Ballet Vero Beach in 2017. The libretto follows the story of young Marie Stahlbaum as she journeys from New York to Vero Beach in December 1919 to spend the holidays with her eccentric Uncle Drosselmeyer. Instead of traditional candy characters in the second act, the production features local flora and fauna. Land crabs, sandhill cranes, manatees, gopher tortoises, and more will be portrayed in the film. Ballet Vero Beach Artistic Director/CEO Adam Schnell says, “The production has always been a love letter to the beauty of our natural surroundings, and it is an extraordinary privilege to be able to offer a version of the show for free this holiday season. It has been phenomenal to see our community come together to make this possible for all citizens to enjoy.” For more information, visit BalletVeroBeach.org.

Anita Prentice:

Painting the Town

I

t all started with a fish mount in a dumpster. Few people could look at an old taxidermy fish and envision a beautiful second life, but that’s exactly what Anita Prentice did. She took bits of colorful glass and placed each like a drop of paint, adorning the fish into a beautiful work of art. From there, the sky was the limit. Anita has produced more than 175 benches throughout the Treasure Coast, decorated the memorial grave markers of some of the legendary Highwaymen, and created hundreds of one-of-a-kind breathtaking framed pieces. As Anita says, “Like Diego, Pablo and Salvador, I fully intend to paint the town.” And paint the town she has. Nothing will stop her, not even COVID-19 and the new socially distant world we now live in. The town she has lived in for 40 years has become a rich recipient of her talent and philanthropy. One of the causes that Anita holds dearest to her heart is Mainstreet. Currently, Anita is participating in Mainstreet’s virtual show featuring a collection of classic Poinsettia trees.

36

November-December 2020

In addition, Anita just finished curating the 13th annual Mainstreet Reflections show which begins November 19. It is comprised of many local favorite artists and features new, up-and-coming talents. One of the community’s favorite Mainstreet art shows celebrates the Florida landscapes of Anita and Doretha Hair Truesdell, slated for early 2021. In the past, Anita has taken her inspiration from a variety of professional and amateur landscape photographs, then translated them into framed mosaic glass pieces. This year, her muse includes local vintage architecture like the PP Cobb building and Casa Caprona. Another philanthropic favorite for Anita is Heathcote Gardens where she has created a mosaic animal collection within the gardens. The collection began with a life-sized blue panda named Cobalt, and now includes a pair of orange eastern lions in the children’s garden. For 2021, a gorilla is in the midst, slated for the Rain Forest Garden. The gorilla will be comprised of bits of glass and broken tea sets. Anita is an art advocate who has served countless hours on various boards and committees to ensure that art is at the forefront of our community. Some of Anita’s notable public works (in addition to her well-known benches featuring native fish) include her Zora Neale Hurston collection, the Tree of Life Donation Murals at the St. Lucie County Tax Collectors Office in Tradition, the Highwaymen Memorial on Fort Pierce’s Intermodal Bus Station, the butterfly mosaic in Port St. Lucie’s Botanical Garden and Fort Pierce’s Melody Fishing Pier. There are so many beautiful Prentice-pieces throughout the Treasure Coast that in early 2020, there were tours of the “Anita Prentice Art Trail.” Participants were thrilled to visit these public works and glean some insight and background information from the artist. During the quiet time of quarantine, some of Anita’s more recent works have included private family memorial benches and commissioned framed mosaics. Many families struggled with closure as beloved members have not been allowed the distinctive burials they deserve. Some families have commissioned memorial benches. Anita works with the family to interpret their personal ideas into a one-of-a-kind stunning tribute. After dedicating the bench, one family decided they needed a framed picture of the piece for their home in Ohio, a constant pleasant reminder of lives well lived. Anita isn’t one to rest on her laurels. She’s always finding new and unique ways to be creative. She loves working with other artists and is planning a collaborative event with musicians and porch poets. We can’t wait to see what spring 2021 will bring! It’s been a wonderful experience to get back to watercolor painting.” says owner Susan Gasparro. The business launched a little over 3 years ago and Susan and her tiny team, haven’t looked back. The whole family is involved in the business. Susan and her mom do all of the painting and designing, while her husband handles all of the packing and shipping duties. Daughter, Olivia, is the photographer and takes all of the product shots. Originally from New York City, the family moved here to beautiful Vero Beach and decided to turn a love of watercolor painting into a real business. Both women have graphic design backgrounds as art directors in the magazine publishing world. With over 30 years of experience, their expertise goes way beyond painting. “During the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s given us time to concentrate on where we want to go in our future,” explains Susan. “So, it makes sense to put our collective graphic design knowledge to use and expand into small business branding. A New, Clean Wine:

Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power Launch Avaline

T

hese co-founders are on a mission to raise the standard of what’s in your glass. Global icon and wellness author Cameron Diaz, together with successful entrepreneur Katherine Power (WhoWhatWear, Versed Skincare), introduce Avaline, a new, clean wine. Launched in July with a white and rosé and with plans to introduce red in late October, the wines are clean, delicious, vegan-friendly, made with organic grapes and free of unnecessary extras like sugars, colors and concentrates. The co-founders aim to bring a new standard of transparency to the wine industry. Like most good stories, Avaline’s begins with a few glasses of wine between friends. Introduced by a sister-in-law and drawn together by a shared love for wine and wellness, Katherine and Cameron forged a strong friendship. One beautiful afternoon in the backyard, as the wine started to flow, so did the conversation. Katherine and Cameron knew the contents of everything that went in and on their bodies—why not wine? Their journey to answer this question began in April 2018, as they immersed themselves into the wine world, seeking to learn everything they could about the industry: from farming to winemaking to distribution and retail. Cameron shares, “I enjoyed wine for many-a-year and never questioned it. Not once. I actually figured it was the most responsible alcohol choice because it was made with fermented grapes! But I had no idea of the process. One of the first conversations Katherine and I had about making a cleaner wine was ‘what are we going to add to it?’ We soon learned it wasn’t what you added, it’s what you didn’t add.” Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

“We learned most wine is not made with organic grapes and that it can be manipulated with over 70 additives. This completely changed the way we thought about it. When we started asking for clean or organic wines in grocery stores, hotels and restaurants, all we got were eye-rolls. One of our main goals is to increase the prevalence of clean wine in the market, making it available where our consumer is already shopping,” continues Katherine. Katherine and Cameron agreed on the style of wine they both enjoyed and wanted to make: a crisp and clean rosé and a mineral-driven, dry white. After extensive research, they identified winemakers in France and Spain who owned vineyards and could produce these styles at the scale necessary for Avaline to achieve its mission of championing a new industry standard by making clean wine accessible to everyone. Avaline aims to raise the bar for transparency in the wine industry. This starts with the label, which clearly communicates what is and is not in each bottle. On its website, Avaline provides even more information on the winemaking process and the nutritional content of the wines. Avaline White and Rosé are available for purchase at Wine.com. The brand will also be available for purchase on DrinkAvaline.com.

Personalized Charcuterie Boards:

Say Cheese for The Board Babes

C

harcuterie boards take “cheese and crackers” to a whole new level. Curating an elaborate spread takes a creative eye and some serious shopping, but thankfully, there are a couple of gals here in South Florida who make custom boards that are pleasing to the eye and the palate. After meeting in 2018, Morgan Karr began working for Iris’ Smeltz boutique catering company. COVID took a toll on events, so Iris and Morgan decided to join forces and go into business together as The Board Babes. They’re just a couple of babes who love cheese, charcuterie, chocolate and wine. Now that small, intimate gatherings have replaced large catered events, they couldn’t think of a better way to help you treat yourself and the ones you love than with tasty, personalized charcuterie boards. When the babes started this venture, their goal was to collaborate with other local businesses. “As female small business owners, it’s so important to come together and support each other in whatever way we can.” They source most of their products from purveyors in Palm Beach, Martin, and other surrounding counties. The Board Babes are also active members of their community. They are heavily involved in the local children’s organization, Place of Hope, and support Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse. When Morgan and Iris aren’t building charcuterie boards, they both love spending time with their families and living the South Florida lifestyle. Both babes profess to be avid cheese eaters and have no shame in being self-proclaimed winos. It comes with the territory, right? Visit them at TheBoardBabesFL.com or follow on @theboardbabesfl.

Mountains of Opportunity

T

his year has been one for the history books. I have never experienced one like it before, and I know people who are twice my age who feel the same way. As the initial shock wears off, fatigue threatens to set in. The only way to avert such an outcome is to remain positive. Mind over matter. The virus has proven a clever opponent, but the human spirit is resilient. One method I find effective for managing my mindset is comparing my situation to others. I do this because I often find inspiration in other people’s stories. All around the world people are adapting their lifestyles to protect their families, while trying to remain economically competitive. In Jammu and Kashmir, there remains hope. All 17 recipients of scholarships from Education: Access, Inc. have remained enrolled in school despite the challenges. Each one of those 17 beneficiaries represent “mountains of opportunity”. Education helps individuals reach their full potential. When people are taught to think critically, people are empowered to resolve problems. This net gain is obvious once one considers the tradeoffs. The girls who have Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

received scholarships from our organization are destined to be doctors, accountants, and engineers instead of being forced into arranged marriages, child labor, or the sex trade. Education: Access, Inc. became involved in India over five years ago. At the time, we understood that our impact, though limited, would be real. Most of our funding originates in Vero Beach, and for that we are eternally grateful. This hometown support has instilled in us great confidence and pride. My pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam is meant to demonstrate our resolve and to illuminate our mission. The first step to overcoming any challenge is belief. I believe humanity will be made stronger and more compassionate from the challenges we currently face. I intend on seeing that belief become reality.

Christina Bruce Interiors:

Aging in Place

I

recently completed my certification as an Aging In Place Specialist through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). I originally sought this accreditation as I saw the need in our community to help aging individuals remain lively, while living safely in their home. I never predicted how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic would make this need even more prevalent. Aging In Place design allows one to stay in their home as long as possible and avoid the need for living in any type of nursing or care facility. The general idea involves applying the ADA regulations to a home in an attractive and inconspicuous way. In 2013, the U.S. population of individuals 65 and older was 14%. It is predicted that by the year 2040, that number will grow to 22%. The existing infrastructure of healthcare facilities will not be able to absorb this increase. According to a study by AARP, 89% of seniors wish to stay in their homes. Now, people are also concerned with the safety of nursing facilities as many have become hot spots during the pandemic. The changes necessary in order to make a home safe for an aging individual can often be simple. Adding path lighting especially for areas used at night is one easy change. In addition, removing tripping hazards such as furniture that might impede into a hallways or rugs helps prevent falls. Also, switching door or plumbing hardware to levers as opposed to knobs make use easier for individuals with arthritis. A key element of safety focuses on the bathroom, where having enough space for wheelchair accessibility is ideal. Installing safety items such as grab bars, as well as eliminating shower curbs, while might involve a more invasive renovation, are vital to an aging individual’s risk against serious injuries. The biggest misconception is that one can wait to make these changes to their home until they are physically necessary. The best time to make these design decisions is before you need them, especially when building a house. Making these renovations, just as with any home renovation project, take time and people often wait until it is too late. Please know that these designs do not replace a caregiver if one is deemed medical necessary. These designs will allow you to remain in your home as long as medically possible. It is important to work with an informed design professional who can help guide you as to how to make your home as safe as possible, while also looking attractive and natural in a residential space. Hazel House:

Cooking Up Something New

H

azel House has expanded its interior design offerings! In early October, we began an exciting in-store renovation on a kitchen. This expansion features our cabinet lines and the launch of our newest division: Kitchen + Bath. This is the next big step in the grand plan we have for our business and we’re grateful to be moving towards this goal. With a full interior design team, we can now see our customers through home renovations in the most utilized parts of their homes. Lead Kitchen + Bath designer, Jessica Mahoney, joined us this summer from a local development firm specializing in building high-end custom homes as well as remodels. At this firm, she was the selections coordinator and cabinet design specialist. In school, she received her degree in interior design where she became certified in kitchen and bath design. Kitchens and bathrooms sell homes, so it is important to stay on top of the latest trends. Jessica enjoys incorporating “smart” features into her designs. She says every zone in your kitchen or bath must have a purpose and make everyday life more efficient. Nobody likes to see clutter on their countertops, so designing a space where everything has a home is key. “Whether it’s your dog’s bowls disguised in the bottom drawer or a cabinet designed to house your bulky appliances, there’s a smart design choice available,” Jessica says. “Our quality cabinet lines, Crestwood and Koch, are both made in the USA and feature a range of custom modifications that allow clients to increase their design capabilities.” Co-owner Kirsten Kennedy, who is also head of Hazel House’s interior design division, broke ground this summer on an addition at her home featuring new cabinetry. This renovation has also allowed her the opportunity to incorporate one of her favorite industry trends: the prep kitchen. This supplemental kitchen can go by several names… caterer’s kitchen, secondary kitchen or mess kitchen. It’s immediately accessible from the main kitchen and supports all of its functions by offering an additional work zone. While Kirsten loves an open concept floor plan, she says things can often get messy. The prep kitchen provides an area to do all of the dirty work and keep it behind the scenes. At a minimum, it should include counter space and a sink, but can be customized for each homeowner’s needs. We look forward to helping our customers make their kitchen and bath dreams a reality. Let Kirsten, Jessica and the team at Hazel House design the best kitchen or bath for your home. For information, call (772) 213-3024, or visit Hazel House at 1882 Old Dixie Highway in Vero Beach.

Bromeliads:

Always in Style

Y

ou don’t have to be an experienced gardener to adopt bromeliads into your home and garden. Believed to have inhabited the earth for 65 million years, bromeliads know how to take care of themselves. Today, there are more than 3,000 known species, ensuring there’s a bromeliad that’s right for you. Bromeliads were first discovered in the mountainous regions of Central and South America where they still grow wild today. Indigenous peoples used the plant for food, in textiles, and for ceremonies. In the 18th century, European traders took bromeliads back to Europe where they became the origins of many of the varieties known today. Bromeliads are terrestrial (live in soil) and epiphytic (live in trees). They flower once in their life, and then die. However, they do sprout offspring— pups—which can be found growing near their bases and can be nurtured into their own plants. In our climate, they thrive indoors or outside in the garden. Bromeliad care is simple. Place them in medium light and water occasionally. Most do not like direct sun and when you forget to water them, they survive by getting moisture and food from the air. Much has been written about the bromeliad, but perhaps nothing more interesting than the idea that bromeliads can be matched to your style. For those who like it formal, there’s the fairly common Guzmania. These do well as a houseplant and have green leaves topped by red, orange, yellow, purple, and white bloom spikes. If you are more daring, we recommend the Neoregelia, which grows in the garden. Known for its foliage, the new growth comes in bold colors and has names such as fireball and sexy pink. The whimsical gardener would like the Pink Quill. This epiphyte grows well in trees and has pink, paddle-shaped flowers. Regardless of your style or gardening know how, a bromeliad is a sure bet for your next garden addition. You will be proud of your success and your bromeliad will always be in style. For more information, call (772) 563-0071 or visit AielloLandscape.com.

Written by Peter Benedict Photography by Kelly Thompson

l Guzmania Guzmania bromeliads are known for their brightly colored funnel rosettes. While red is the most common color, you can also find Guzmania bromeliads in yellow, orange, white, pink and purple. Guzmania is also one of the most low-maintenance bromeliads, equiring only a little water in the leaf cup once per week.

54

Garden Elegance

l Tillandsia The narrow, pointed leaves of Tillandsia bromeliads almost resemble sea grass, which enhances their tropical appearance. Tillandsias are air plants — meaning they don’t need roots to get nutrients—and typically grow on trees or rocks. Their flowers come in shades of pink, orange and red.

(772) 563-0071 | AielloLandscape.com

l Vriesea The Vriesea, or the Classic Wave Bromeliad, is popular for its unique color varieties. Often, the blooms aren’t just one color; instead, you’ll find yellow with red mixed together, or red with orange highlights. Their bright appearance makes them a popular choice for houseplants.

John’s Island:

Finding Refuge

T

hey say hindsight is 20/20. While many are certainly ready for that to be true and to turn the page to 2021, in midst of the shifting sands, this year has also proven to be a chance to celebrate. For John’s Island, the stage was set for a year highlighting 50 years since legendary developer Llwyd Ecclestone’s vision became reality. Fifty years of families making memories by the nearly three miles of inviting beach. Fifty years of jubilees and joy, golf and gourmet meals. Fifty years of deepening roots along the Indian River. While initial plans were turned upside down, what this year has showcased is the ability pivot to the positive, to rally to support and innovate, and the natural beauty with which we are surrounded. When the world slowed down, these shores were a perfect place to find serenity from the stress. To safely commune on the golf courses or spend time with loved ones in the warmth of the sun. To bike along the quiet paths or find a bit of relaxation in sunsets over the lagoon. 56

November-December 2020

Ecclestone’s plan for John’s Island, which carefully placed homes in the shadow of majestic live oaks with space to roam, focused on preservation of the pristine natural environment and has continued to provide an idyllic haven—one that is especially inviting today. Sales within the gates have skyrocketed and inquiries are growing by the day. Now, more than ever, our virtual campaigns have helped people to connect, explore and entice…and our agents have helped welcome new faces into the fold and find their personal paradise. While leading the charge in safety, the club continued its tradition for anticipating member needs—a testament to the appeal of this area, as well as the continued ability of the club to evolve. In a time where people are looking for tranquility and a sense of place, they’re drawn to the endless summers of our shores. Between the blissful weather, tax advantages, legendary club atmosphere and the strong fabric of the John’s Island community, there’s no better time to enjoy Florida or John’s Island. Like the iconic tree of our brand, this time has shown the strength within us all, rooted in the ability to grow and branch out. In what has been a golden anniversary that certainly defied all expectations, it has shown the importance of a town that has come together and remained steadfast. Even when the world slows down, we won’t. We look forward to what the future brings, but toast to a life with unparalleled surroundings that 2020 has brought so clearly into focus.

Chloe Leverington:

The Girl with the Cape

T

here’s a caped crusader flying high on Florida’s mountain bike trails and her name is Chloe Leverington. In 2016, we took our daughter Chloe on her first trip to one of our local mountain bike trails near our home in Lakeland; she was 7 years old. The cool animal sightings, awesome trail features and fun terrain immediately hooked her and she knew this was the sport for her. A year later, Chloe’s younger sister, Caden, started riding, too, making it a true family affair. Chloe soon began expressing her unique personality on the MTB trails. She wore a cape to school on super hero day, then asked to wear it on the trail. We made a deal that if she was going to wear the cape, it must be earned, whether it was concurring an obstacle, clearing a trail without

putting a foot down, or trying a new or harder trail, all while keeping a fun, friendly attitude. Now it’s her confidence-boosting trademark. We love riding our bikes and exploring outside. We’re grateful to have discovered Florida’s mountain bike trails and community, which is full of awesome, friendly people! We feel blessed to have found such a perfect activity to do as a family. Both girls love doing their thing on the trails, being an inspiration and having a great time. While we ride primarily for fun and family bonding, Chloe is excited to join the National Interscholastic Cycling Association in 2021. We feel it will be a good experience for her to join a team of other like-minded kids who enjoy riding bikes. For all the girls out there who want to get into the sport of mountain biking: do what makes you happy! Don’t give up when the hills get tough— drop a gear and pedal away! Never mind the nay sayers. If someone tells you that you can’t do something because you’re a girl, use that as motivation to prove them wrong. That’s what motivates Chloe. Always remember to keep it fun! Follow along with Chloe and Caden’s adventures on @Chloe Leverington and @277wondergirl #thegirlwiththecape

Kelly Jones:

Champion Mountain Bike Athlete Portfolio Editor, Penny Tranchilla, interviewed mountain biking state champion Kelly Jones to pick her brain about breaking into this exciting sport and learn more about her experience as a female mountain biking athlete. P: How did you get started? K: I have a somewhat straightforward but quite complicated reason as to why I ride bikes. To keep it fairly simple, I was born in England and moved to the U.S. when I was 15. I grew up happy and in a loving family. I was pretty “normal” and had lots of friends and love around me. When I was around 20, I went to the doctor for back pain from a snowboarding injury and I was prescribed Vicodin. In a VERY short time, I became mentally and physically addicted to these opiates and my life took a serious downward spiral. I spent the next 13 years in active addiction and my life went to places a lot of people could never imagine. I never thought I would survive, but I was one of the lucky ones and in 2012 I went to a long-term treatment facility and started to get better. Why is this relative? This is how I got into the sport of triathlon and ultimately mountain biking. My step-dad encouraged me to give it a try and I loved it. In fact, it was one of the key things that motivated me more than anything to want to do well and challenge myself in sobriety. It gave me my alone time and time to think without me ever getting bored. It was everything I needed and a little bit more. It became the positive focus of my life, filling the void that I was missing all along. P: How long have you been racing? K: My first Triathlon was in March 2013 and I’ve raced more than 35 including a few Half Ironman. My first MTB race was in January 2017 in women’s base and I placed third. I then moved up to sport in September 2017 and won the Florida state title that year. This is my fourth season racing and I’m the defending Florida State Champion in Women’s Pro/Cat 1. P: How competitive it is being a girl? K: I think that the level of competition is high among the females in Florida. There are a lot of laser-focused women taking names and shredding hard. I would say that being a girl brings me many advantages in this sport also. For example, sponsors have more funding available for females since there isn’t as many of us. P: Any words of wisdom for someone wanting to compete? K: I would say, just do it. I find that the women in Florida are super supportive of each other and are really encouraging. If someone is considering their first race, I would advise them to join a training group or reach out to someone on social media and ask for some advice. I get questions all the time and I’m even considering doing a women’s “race preview” the day before at a race venue. We can talk about starts and what is expected and do a lap of the trails. I think that would be cool. P: What are your favorite Florida trails? K: My all-time favorite is, of course, Markham Park. It’s my local spot and it’s the best park hands down. The trail maintenance crew keep the trails in prime condition and are constantly adding and improving. We are so lucky. A close second is Carter Road in Lakeland. The trails are so unique and the views can’t be beat, plus the trail crew there build some really sick stuff! Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

P: Have you ever crashed? If so, what was your worst? K: Yes, so many times I can’t count anymore. My worst crash was when I hit a 30-foot tabletop at Santos and went over the bars. I sprained my ankle and messed up my back a bit. P: Favorite bike for racing? K: BMC four stroke 01 P: Fav bike for the recreational biker? K: Any bike that works for that person’s budget is going to be the winner. If you’re new and not sure what type of biking you’ll do, a gravel bike is a good bet or a hard tail MTB. The main factor is to choose a bike that you’re comfortable riding. If you’re not comfortable or end up with aches and pains, you’ll stop riding. Kelly is supported by BMC/Kogel Bearings/Esi Grips/Peatys Products/Kuat Racks/Solo Warrior Socks/AbsoluteBlack/Kask Helmets/Pirelli Tires. Keep up with Kelly: @kellyjonesmtb, kellyjonesMTB, Kelly Jones

Winter is Coming:

Get Outside

n most states, leaves fall and plants wither as the cold and dry season approach. In Florida, the autumn equinox is announced with millions of bait fish moving southward in pursuit of spawning, and with them comes every major predator that swims the straits of Florida peninsula. The approaching cold fronts attract out of state residents to our beautiful coastlines, as well as many species of fish and birdlife. The initial cold fronts we encounter will bring cool, dry air to the Indian River Lagoon and provide some much-needed relief from the heavy rains we typically have in late summer and early fall. Both the flora and fauna of the Treasure Coast area react well to this time of the year when both air and sea temperatures are ideal. Without question, this is one of my personal favorite times of the year to get out and enjoy how beautiful Florida can be. From amazing fishing and perfect sunsets, to cooler temperatures, get outside and experience what living really is. The River Otter:

Florida’s Feisty, Freshwater Mammal

A

s far as aquatic mammals go, dolphins and manatees get all the attention in Florida. But, the Sunshine State is home to another water-loving animal—the river otter. I’ll never forget the first time I saw an otter. To celebrate my younger brother turning 20-years-old, we went skydiving for the first time in Palm Beach County. I jumped first and just as I was coming in for a landing on a dirt trail, a sleek river otter emerged from the water and scurried across my path. In Florida, river otters live in creeks, rivers, swamps and ponds. Since my skydiving adventure, I’ve observed them a handful of times while out exploring nature, including at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. I remember feeling concerned watching them swim with large alligators lurking nearby—their main predator in the water. But, these mammals, which are members of the weasel family, are tough and designed for an aquatic lifestyle. “They will fight back,” said Megan Stolen, a biologist with the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, who studies Florida’s otters. “They are very feisty.” Across the country, otters are top predators in wetland systems, fish, birds, crayfish, turtles, frogs, mussels, and small mammals such as mice and muskrats. As voracious carnivores, they need to consume up to 20 percent of their body weight every day to sustain their constant activity. They’ve got long facial whiskers to help them detect prey in murky water, big webbed feet and powerful tapered tails. They can hold their breath for a minute or more. The presence of otters indicates a healthy ecosystem, which makes them a sentinel species, said Stolen. Years ago, they were nearly wiped out across most of the country due to the fur trade industry, habitat loss and polluted waters. They’ve since bounced back thanks to widespread conservation action, such as reintroduction programs and environmental regulation. But, Stolen wants to know more about the otters in Florida, and how they are doing. “We just don’t know enough about them,” she said. “They’re still hunted and trapped in Florida and we have no idea what their population is.” In 2016, Stolen launched the Indian River Lagoon Otter Spotter citizen science project to learn more about otter movement patterns and habitat use. Otter Spotters are trained observers that report their otter sightings to the program, but anyone can enter a sighting, which Stolen encourages. And while “they’re fun to watch from a distance,” she said, Stolen discourages people from getting too close. After all, they’re predators and “they’re unpredictable.” If you see an otter, report the sighting, which can be done online JotForm.com/mstolen/otterspotter.

Florida’s Indian River Lagoon:

Exploration Education in Your Backyard

F

lorida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is searching for mates that can help steer a vital program back on course and preserve our oceans’ health by inspiring and educating our youth. With the pristine shores of Florida’s Indian River Lagoon as the program’s backyard, FAU’s Semester by the Sea program conducted at Harbor Branch was an unforgettable experience. “This program is crucial to keeping youth involved with the sciences and improving humans’ relationship with the Earth and its oceans,” said Zack Nilles, Semester By the Sea ‘14. Semester By The Sea began in 2001 and presented an incredible opportunity for students to get their feet wet in the field of ocean science— and was one of the few programs of its kind in the U.S. “I greatly valued the ability to both learn from and work closely with experts from a variety of fields. I also enjoyed the many hands-on activities, which included laboratory experiments, field studies, and a scientific cruise aboard a research vessel!” said Gabby Barbarite, Ph.D., Semester By the Sea ‘08. For budding marine scientists, the program’s highlight was the opportunity to get out into the field and apply their lessons firsthand. The possibilities are endless, with 4,300 plus species of plants and animals that call the Indian River Lagoon and watershed home, including 50 species considered threatened or endangered. “As environmental changes increasingly put our oceans’ future—and our corner of paradise—at risk, educating and supporting the next generation 68

November-December 2020

of marine scientists is more important than ever,” said FAU Harbor Branch Executive Director Jim Sullivan. Over four months, Semester By The Sea provided students with a broad understanding of coastal, nearshore, and oceanographic science, along with the research and inquiry skills necessary for excelling in graduate programs, providing a strong foundation for a career in marine biology. It’s truly a semester that students never forget. For nearly 20 years, the immersive program instilled a passion for ocean science in more than 400 undergraduate students. Program alumni have gone on to graduate programs and professional careers in marine science—paths only made possible by Semester by the Sea. “The experience and meaningful connections that I gained during this program have inspired, prepared, and supported me as I have advanced through my career,” added Barbarite. Unfortunately, Semester By The Sea is on hold due to budget constraints. FAU Harbor Branch is currently seeking community supporters to resurrect this innovative program. For more information, contact FAU Harbor Branch Director of Development Amanda Nickeson at (412) 296-1852.

Winter in NYC:

A Nip in the Air, and Not a Care...

N

o place on earth can rival the feelings, the excitement and the festivities of NYC during the holiday season. Envision a stroll down the fabulous Fifth Avenue with twinkling lights, unforgettable decorations, and the hustle and bustle of people doing their holiday shopping. Peer into the elaborate windows on Fifth. All the storefronts are decorated to the nines, many are interactive, calling on children to hit buttons and pull levers. The Saks Fifth Avenue light show tops the list of holiday window displays. This carefully curated window will take your breath away, bringing your holiday spirit to new heights. If you get your timing right, you can stand at Rockefeller Center enjoying the tree, then make a 180° turn from the rink, you’ll see the dramatic light show at Saks Fifth Avenue, serenading passersby with music at regular intervals, once the sun goes down. The experience is simply enchanting. If by chance a few snowflakes fall, you have witnessed pure magic in Manhattan. One of my fondest holiday traditions was going to Radio City Music Hall to see the Rockettes. We didn’t mind waiting in the line that wrapped around the building once, and on occasion twice. We knew that once the doors opened, we would be transported to a fantastic winter wonderland with the remarkable Rockettes—a truly spectacular show! The lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center is another favorite. Typically a Norwegian spruce ranging in height from 60 to 100 feet, the tree is adorned with five miles of multicolored LED lights and ornaments. It’s topped with a star that comprises more than three million Swarovski crystals. The tree lighting event takes place the week after Thanksgiving and it’s free and open to the public on a first come, first serve basis. To me, it’s worth the effort to attend at least one tree lighting ceremony; the experience will stay with you forever. Paris might be hailed the city of lights, but not when it comes to the holiday season in New York City. The lights are unbelievable. Touring the city’s iconic Christmas markets, you’ll be captivated with old world sights and sounds. Here you will discover local art and crafts, and try traditional foods while warming up on festive drinks. All your senses will be enhanced! If you’re lucky enough to be in New York during the holiday season, I hope you take the time to enjoy this winter wonderland. I promise, there’s nothing else that compares! Happy holidays and happy New Year - New York-style!

Mountain Air:

Western North Carolina Invites You to Go Skiing

T

he Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina are beautiful ear-round; from the lush greens of spring and summer, to the colorful tapestry of foliage that returns every fall. However, for the skier and boarder, it’s the white capped peaks of winter that are the most beautiful to behold. The members and guests of the destination mountain community of Mountain Air don’t have far to go to get to their favorite Blue Ridge ski slopes and mountain towns. Far enough south to avoid the extreme cold temperatures that often accompany the ski resorts of the north, and high enough in elevation to deliver some serious vertical, a few of the surrounding ski resorts include: • Wolf Ridge Ski Resort (30 minutes) • Sugar Mountain Ski Resort (75 minutes) • Beech Mountain Ski Resort (90 minutes) While winter is an idyllic season at Mountain Air (with enough snow, families get to sled on the downhill fairways), it offers a timeless setting that merges with an inviting, year-round lifestyle designed for today’s families: A lifestyle that is both new and familiar; a destination to share with those closest to you; the ideal escape from the stresses of today; soothing and adventurous; communal; inspiring; and effortless. Mountain Air offers its members and guests a true mountain golf course experience, trails, parks and a whole host of amenities that take advantage of its elevated location. Without a doubt, one of the most fascinating features of Mountain Air is its 2,875-foot mountaintop runway. At 4,400 feet, it’s the highest runway east of the Mississippi. Members can fly in just after breakfast for a morning round of golf, grab some lunch with friends, then fly-out for adventures unknown, having never descended to sea level. Tim Plunkett, Mountain Air member and pilot, notes, “Flying into Mountain Air is an incredibly unique experience. As a pilot, it’s very exciting—coming into the mountain is not routine. All the pilots I know love that experience.” Located just steps from the runway, Slickrock Village Green serves as the centerpiece of the club, offering a host of amenities for every member of the family along with the finest views in the community. Members and guests meet, gather, dine and laugh here. While away the afternoon outside the Mountain Market & Deli, a one-of-kind grocery/pub/deli that offers all the necessities along with comfortable seats and a welcoming atmosphere. Take a stroll over to the Nature Center to learn about the flora and fauna that share this mountain home. A visit to the Chautauqua Family Center, an inviting destination that offers a movie theater, teen room, and children’s activity center, is always a delight. Offering custom homes, homesites and condominiums, Mountain Air is now scheduling private tour visits for the fall and winter. Schedule yours by visiting MountainAirNC.com.

Erase 2020 from Your Face:

Restore a Youthful Glow with Micro-Needling

L

et’s face it, literally. Most of us could use a little rejuvenation right now. The stress of COVID has taken its toll and aged us a few years. The mirror reveals a more tired and worn version of our former selves. Perhaps you’ve noticed new age spots, a few extra wrinkles, under-eye bags or saggy, lackluster skin. If you’re looking for an effective solution, consider Micro-Needling. Micro-Needling is a safe and natural way to rejuvenate your appearance with no down-time, surgery, or fillers. Amanda Milian, AP, DOM, of Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine, is trained in AcuMicro under Josh Nerenberg, LAc, founder of San Diego Cosmetic Acupuncture. AcuMicro is traditional Micro-Needling augmented by NanoNeedling and unique, result-boosting serums. Micro-Needling is performed by gliding a pen-like instrument gently over the skin. The tip of the pen contains tiny needles that rotate at a frequency of 9000 RPMs. Because the needles penetrate the skin, the body perceives a micro-injury and responds by producing collagen, elastin, and new skin cells. Collagen is the protein that gives skin a plump, youthful appearance and elastin is responsible for making the skin firm and smooth. In addition to facial benefits, Micro-Needling also improves acne, diminishes scars, and promotes hair growth on the scalp. Micro-Needling has been shown to increase absorption of topical serums by 2000%. AcuMicro utilizes seven specially formulated serums to address specific problem areas and enhance results. These exclusive anti-aging serums, made from Chinese herbs and other natural agents, are customized to your skin’s needs. Active ingredients include hyaluronic acid to hydrate skin, shiitake mushroom to boost collagen, premium apple stem

cells for cellular renewal, Zao Lei to lighten age spots, Hai Zao to treat under-eye bags, puffiness and dark circles, Tian Men Dong to repair and thicken thin skin, Fu Ling to promote collagen and elastin in mature skin and to treat acne, and Ji Xue Cao for repair and aftercare. Topical lidocaine can be applied before MicroNeedling to increase comfort; however, many find this unnecessary, as pain is minimal. The face will be pink for several hours after treatment and sun, sweat, and makeup should be avoided during this time. For best results, four treatments are recommended and are administered monthly. Gradual changes will be seen after the first treatment, with results being cumulative. Nano-Needling uses the same Micro-Needling pen, but instead of needles, 81 silicone tips glide gently over the face exfoliating the epidermis. The oscillation of the silicone tips causes the cells within the epidermis to separate allowing for deeper infusion of the serums. Nano-needling is performed over delicate areas like the eyes and lips and can be used for extra-sensitive clients who may not tolerate Micro-Needling. Nano-Needling can be done weekly to enhance Micro-Needling results or as a stand-alone treatment for the whole face. Please call our office at (772) 564-8383 for a complimentary consultation and to take advantage of our special savings for new clients. You’ll be glowing again in no time!

Nature:

The Best Medicine

I

recently had an encounter with the wilderness and it felt so much like dreaming awake. I had with me a light backpack, all the time in the world, and nowhere to be. My meditation ritual usually involves closing my eyes, but here I found it to be completely unnecessary and counterintuitive. All the images, sounds, smells, and textures that I connect with in my practice were before me. Every feeling I usually seek, I found. There were so many things on which to focus my attention: whispers of the wind playing with my hair and blowing the shedding leaves; the sound of the water running down the stream; the smell of pine and earth; sunlight on my face contrasting with the chilly breeze; the taste of nature. I thought to myself, “The sense of wholeness is real out here,” as I inhaled deeply and sat in wonder, complete and utter peace, and in full communion with the earth. I started to reflect on all that has transpired this year—the good, the bad, the ugly, but most of all the wonderful. The year of less is more: 2020. Where inner peace became the new luxury and we were reminded for years to come of the true value of a hug. Where we tapped into the pleasures of sitting with ourselves (even though sometimes it was rough). The resiliency of the human spirit was no longer a

80

November-December 2020

concept we explored in a personal development book, but actually embodied as we navigated the trying waters. The year where deep breaths, sunbathing, a walk on the beach, touching the water, grounding in the sand (or the yard), taking a bike ride, climbing a mountain, hugging a tree, and star gazing at night was all we needed to feel complete. Nature, at its purest and simplest form, is our best medicine. As we gently regain the pace, let us not be too quick to forget about the gains and the magic of the little things. Let us remember to live slow, move with expanded awareness, take a break, appreciate life’s offerings, and be present for the moments that remind us of the wonders of life. Because we are all on the sacred path whether we realize it or not. Follow Soulfully: Inner Work & Meditation on @bymeditacionesdeunaloca. A synergistic blend of vinyasa yoga, plyometrics, calisthenics, HIIT, cardio, and core providing a full body workout. Infuse that with the mindfulness of yoga and you’ve got Level Up. You’ll leave class sweaty, sore and most importantly, better than you came in. The typical Level Up attendee is someone who wants to check off self-care and fitness in less than an hour (45 minutes to be exact). Prior to the studio’s rebranding in 2018, Level Yoga was known as Vero Beach Yoga Barre. Among the reasons for this rebrand was an increased emphasis on all things yoga - teacher trainings, expanded yoga offerings, and continuing education opportunities for fitness and wellness professionals. In October, Level Yoga removed the barres from The Pointe studio’s walls. The Level Barre class simultaneously transitioned to Level Burn: A full body workout that incorporates elements of core conditioning, resistance training, Pilates, and barre moves. Low impact, joint-friendly exercises are paired with small range, controlled movements to tone muscles and increase strength. The hope for this reimagined fitness class is to showcase the wide variety of exercises students can expect to experience in class. Level Burn will test your body’s limits in a truly satisfying, albeit burning, way. While 2020 has certainly not been the year we expected, one thing is certain: Level Yoga is here to stay in a significant way. Visit LevelYogaStudio.com and follow on @levelyoga to learn more.

Level Yoga:

A Metamorphosis

W

e will always remember 2020 as a year of change. The team at Level Yoga will especially remember this year for the studio’s transformation. After closing its doors in mid-March, the team learned to livestream classes through Zoom and launched a virtual on-demand class platform, Namastream. In a matter of weeks, Level Yoga adeptly pivoted their preconceived notion of a yoga studio to offer clients a pandemic-friendly practice. While this year has undoubtedly been the hardest small businesses like Level Yoga have ever faced, their team quickly and skillfully learned to navigate this unprecedented climate. Days after its five-year anniversary, on June 1st, the studio reopened doors to their flagship Royal Palm Pointe location. While a physical celebration was out of the realm of possibility, Level Yoga decided to celebrate in a different way, a metamorphosis. Since its inception, Level Yoga has aspired to be more than just a yoga studio. Yoga, after all, is so much more than striking a picture-perfect pose; it is a practice aimed to align the mind, body and spirit with your true nature. This notion of alignment is echoed in the studio’s mission statement: “Level Yoga is a community centered space that encourages students to live empowered and balanced lives at each level of their practice.” Keeping in theme with this year of change, Level Yoga became crystal-clear about their mission: to be a one-stop shop for fitness and wellness. In an effort to bring something nuanced to the studio’s current array of yoga offerings, Level Yoga recently unveiled two new classes: Level Up

Get Outdoors More:

With Your Pet

M

ore and more studies are showing outdoor time is healthier and more stimulating for people and their pets. Most people recall their childhood and find their fondest memories were experienced outdoors. When meditating or imagining a peaceful place, we usually envision a favorite outdoor space. We crave to feel connected with the elements. Pets are much the same as we are in that aspect. The more time they can spend outdoors, the more settled and balanced they will feel. Anytime you are able to take your pet outside in the yard, to the mailbox, out for walks, to the beach, boat docks or parks, you are enriching your pet’s life and soothing its senses. Living in Florida, we are so fortunate to live amongst incredibly beautiful nature and a warm climate. Our pets are susceptible to a wide array of parasites which also enjoy this environment. It’s recommended to protect your pet against contracting various parasitic infections. We have seen an increase in hookworm infections in the past couple of years in Vero Beach. Some hookworm strains have become resistant to many of the medications we have relied on in the past and new protocols are being developed. Topical parasites, such as fleas, are common and ticks are spotty in different regions in our area. Tick eggs can travel from the north down to Florida on plant materials, such as mulch and trees, then hatch out when exposed to the warmth. Some parasitic infections are zoonotic and can spread to humans so try to wear gloves when gardening. Talk to your veterinarian about what measures can be taken to protect your pets from contracting these parasites. Enjoy your time outdoors together! You might notice your pet is brighter, less restless, and sleeps better at night. Learn more at VeroBeachVeterinary.com.

Capturing Memories

F

or almost two years, I have been a jealous bride. On our wedding day, September 23, 2018, we ran out of time and I never had the chance to take any of the photos that I had envisioned and prepared for. I wanted to take sunset portraits. I know it’s hard to believe, but I did not have any photos from my wedding as a bride, from getting ready to walking down the aisle. Nothing. Initially, we planned on recreating those moments for our one-year anniversary but unfortunately, our photographer bailed on us. Two years later, my husband made my dream come true. We’ve always admired Meagan Puett’s work. I met Meagan at a friend’s

wedding in January, where she was the photographer. I asked for her Instagram handle to see her work and I’m glad I did. Fast forward a few months later, my husband booked her for our shoot. Meagan is so talented, I told her my vision and she took it and ran with it. I’m looking forward to printing these photos and hanging them in our home! I can’t wait to show our grand-children one day.

Block & Scarpa:

Committed to the Client and Community

B

lock & Scarpa is a full-service law firm that has served the Vero Beach community for more than 40 years. Originally founded in 1979, the firm has grown in size from three to nine attorneys during the last three years. Despite the firm’s vision of growth and expansion, Block & Scarpa has maintained its commitment to providing efficient legal services and constant involvement in our community. Block & Scarpa derives an advantage from its team-oriented approach which allows the firm to keep legal costs efficient and maintain constant communication with clients. Michael Kissner, a Princeton graduate and partner at Block & Scarpa, believes the firm’s growth can be attributed, in large part, to its policy of prioritizing the relationship with clients and ensuring they are informed, satisfied, and likely to recommend the firm’s services. Beckett Horner, who holds an LLM in taxation from the University of Florida and serves as the chairman of the firm’s estate planning department, explains that clients of the firm can expect a thorough review of their needs and concerns, an in-depth discussion of goals, and an understanding of their options from the outset of any matter. In weekly meetings, the firm and its staff continually emphasize their policy of the highest level of service for their clients. The firm’s real estate department has grown significantly and attributes the year-after-year growth to providing closing and title services, plus actual legal representation for typically no more than the cost of a title company. 86

November-December 2020

The attorneys at Block & Scarpa each specialize in practice area-specific departments including real estate, estate planning, trust and probate, condominium and homeowner associations, construction and development, civil litigation (including real estate litigation, business litigation, and injury litigation), business and tax law, and bankruptcy. The firm’s staffed offices in Vero Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando provide convenient locations for clients throughout the state. Block & Scarpa’s legal team includes Samuel A. Block, Ryan C. Scarpa, Beckett C. Horner, Michael Kissner, Jr., K. Shayda Kahani, Lance D. Clouse, Mary Kate Clem, Mario G. Menocal, Michael Alterman, and Ronald S. Kaniuk. The Block & Scarpa team understands the importance of giving back to their communities. Staff members are integrally involved in local charitable organizations, serve on various boards of directors and committees, and devote efforts to support and attend charitable events as a thank you to the communities they are proud to serve. In a Word:

Volatility

T

his has been quite a year for twists and turns. By press time, the election should be over, or not. Be especially cautious about media that makes you feel anxious, angry, or afraid. Election cycles always bring heightened emotions and more negative news than usual. We don’t claim to know what the near-time future in the markets will bring. Only an advisor who is a fool or a rookie would offer a short-term prediction, and we like to think we are neither. However, We do know that the best defense to market volatility is to be widely diversified. Also, it’s critical to limit your exposure to equities (stocks) to only what is necessary to achieve your future cash flow goals and to consider the timeframe for achieving those goals. We accomplish this for our clients through our comprehensive financial planning process and feel it’s the only way to manage risk in the financial markets. In the event of any market downturn, it’s best to stay focused on your financial plan and goals while maintaining the discipline of a well-diversified

portfolio. Stay the course. When equity markets fall and the economic horizon appears unwieldy, professional advice is one of the best tools to cut through the noise and make rational decisions. Volatility or an economic downturn can mean that your portfolio is showing some warning signs. If you’re wondering if you’re still on track, let’s talk. A FREE financial diagnostic will: • Analyze your portfolio, see if you’re taking too much risk and what you should do about it • Compare the fees you are paying • Assess whether you’re still on track for your financial goals and give you an action plan • Evaluate your current strategies in light of the “new normal” economic situation If we can help in any way or you would like to learn more, call (772) 231-3122. At Client 1st Advisory Group, we wish you health, peace and happiness throughout the holiday season and New Year.

life in the stars

H E A LT H , W E A LT H & H A P P I N E S S

As we tuck ourselves in for winter, we’ll need to navigate through strong planetary shifts, beginning November 12 with Jupiter conjunct Pluto. This will bring about a desire to be forceful. If we can ‘ride the wave,’ it can bring amazing progress; if it’s fought against, it can cause blocks—so just relax and keep calm! The full moon (and lunar eclipse) in Gemini on November 30 will enable us to see things from a different perspective and will balance out the energies. With the new moon in Sagittarius on December 14, and the only total solar eclipse of the year, we’ll be speaking our truth and working to tie up any loose ends before the festive season begins! November, in general, will be smooth sailing for you, Aries! At the end of the month, Venus moves into opposition in your sign and by the 20th it’ll be square to Mars which will either bring renewed passion with your love (for some a new romance), or could cause anger to bubble up due to pent up frustration, in which case, take a step back and keep your cool. December begins with a positive Grand Trine between your sign, the Sun and Saturn, meaning your self-confidence will be at an all-time high, so get going to finish those projects so you can relax and enjoy the festivities!

Happy birthday, Scorpio! You’ll feel in your personal power as November starts, with Mars, Uranus and Saturn all in supportive alignment. You’ll be further energised with Mars and Jupiter sitting in opposition to your sign, enabling you to achieve a great deal at this time. If you can go with the flow and allow others to help you, December will flow along with ease. There’ll be a wonderful sense of revitalisation and a sense you are finally seeing progress. For some, you’ll be putting a new exercise or detox regime in place, which you’ll make an integral part of your daily routine into the New Year!

November starts with a bang Taurus, with the sun and Mercury running in opposition to your sign, and Mars positively positioned to first, the Sun, and then Mercury, you’ll progress in all areas of your life with ease. As you move into December, with Mars and Jupiter sitting in opposition, you’ll feel driven to accomplish even more. The only planetary alignment that might need careful navigation is Saturn sitting square to these planets, which may bring about the strong desire to control situations too much. To counteract this, try to be as flexible as you can, and you’ll be fine!

November begins with you feeling a little up and down emotionally, Sagittarius, with deep emotions coming to the surface. This is due to the appearance of Pluto in your sign, which can bring some nostalgia. Even though it might be a little uncomfortable, this could be a perfect time to recognize deep feelings for someone, and you could gain the courage to express yourself, leading to a blossoming romance! You’ll be full of birthday cheer at the start of December, pulling yourself out of any pensive energy, ready to embrace your natural desire for fun and adventure!

It’s smooth sailing, Gemini, as November starts with Jupiter and Pluto in opposition; Jupiter is a lighter influence on heavy, challenging Pluto. Keep your feet on the ground and stay in your heart space, as it’s an ideal time to meet a new love, or renew the passion with a partner. December brings in the Sun and Mercury running in opposition to your sign, which may cause confusion. Are you juggling too much or taking on other’s responsibilities? Stay calm and keep focused. Towards the end of the month, you’ll be organizing an exciting event to bring those you love together!

Get ready for one of the best months to unfold, Capricorn, as you move into November! The Sun, Mercury, Uranus, Mars and Saturn all sit in supportive alignment, so you’ll find anything that’s been causing you stress or frustration in your day-to-day life will miraculously start to dissipate, leaving you feeling much more relaxed. Your loving side will show through at the start of December with Venus in your sign, which is also positively aligned with Mercury. You’ll feel the need to express yourself, bringing you and a partner closer, taking you both to the next level. Do I hear a proposal?!

You have planetary support in November, Cancer, from the Sun, Mercury and Venus, so allow this wonderful alignment to help you achieve your goals. If you move now to get loose ends tied up, you’ll find it easier than you thought. December will be easy going, allowing you to wind down and spend time with those you love. The full moon on December 30 in your sign might make you feel nostalgic. You could decide to impulsively pull out an old address book to contact a long-lost friend or past love. For some, this could lead to a rekindling of a romance!

You’ll find yourself deep in contemplation in November, Aquarius, with Neptune and Mercury stimulating your spiritual side. With Venus coming into play after the 15th, you will ‘just know’ who and what you want, giving you the courage to speak your mind and go for it! Saturn enters your sign on December 17 bringing about the desire to put into place long-term goals. With Jupiter returning to your sign on the 19th (after a 12-year absence), you’ll be thinking big. For some, this time will be life changing—doors will open and you’ll be ready to embrace the new!

You’ll have your head in the clouds as November starts, Leo, and feel ready for romance with Venus and Neptune (the planets of love and deep emotions) well positioned in your sign. This is a time for acting on your feelings and you won’t be shy in going for what (or who) you want! As December kicks in, Saturn moves in opposition to Neptune and you’ll be in deep reflection of what has transpired this past year— lessons learned, clarity gained, issues resolved. You’ll feel the need to move into quiet planning mode, preparing to turn a cherished dream into reality in 2021! November sees you full of confidence and feeling happily stable Virgo, which will enable you to be in a strong position to manifest what you desire. Just ensure you release any need to control a situation as the sun will be in Scorpio, which can bring about deep emotions, together with a strong desire to push forward. December will be an exciting month for you, with Jupiter and Uranus in positive alignment to your sign. For some, you’ll be deciding to breathe life into a past creative project that you put away for a rainy day, which could turn out to be very lucrative! As the rest of the world winds down at this time, Libra, you’ll be fired up with innovative ideas which you’ll be itching to put into action. Mercury is in your sign helping you maintain a flexible attitude, followed by the arrival of Venus, keeping you in touch with your emotions. Mars square Venus might make you overly stubborn in issues of love, so listen to those you love and see their perspective, and all will be well. December will see you quietly ‘head’s down,’ planning something exciting for the start of 2021. For some, you’ll be surprising a loved one with a trip away!
