et’s face it. September in Florida is HOT! Cooling off in the ocean, pool, or river is so refreshing! Exploring the beach at sunrise, evening swims, a sunset boat cruise, diving off our local reefs, catching lobster for dinner—we are so fortunate to live where everyone else vacations! What is your favorite thing to do in our community? What was your best memory from this summer? Did you travel? Stay local? Explore our state? This issue showcases an artist, Michael, also known as @suahuatica, that prefers to create his works of art in the clear, deep blue ocean. He travels to destinations where he can capture the most unique underwater images. Be prepared to be captivated by his stunning imagery! No matter where you live, you can create beautiful art. All you need is your imagination to see the world from a new perspective. The ocean is a place to find beauty both under the sea and above. It’s a place to find peace and solitude. From sitting on its shores listening to the sounds of the surf, to exploring the underwater world, it has a way of humbling a person. It’s a part of this big blue planet that connects us all from shore to shore. You’ll find me swimming to the depths of this wonderful life! Float on!

e live where summer never ends! Grab a cold one and enjoy just being outside. For most of us, it’s just another day in paradise. As school resumes and life becomes more scheduled, don’t forget to still carve out time for a beach walk. Fishing from the shore in the evenings is perfect this time of year, too. Snook season starts in September and remember it’s still sea turtle nesting through the end of November, so no lights on the beach at night please! Long live summer and we’ll “sea” you at the launch party on September 15th from 5-7pm at Heaton’s.

Definition of suahuatica Underwater; Canarian dialect pronunciation of "subaquatica" Michael, the man behind @suahuatica, grew up on a sailing ship called the “Lancha.” He grew up sailing with his parents and lived in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey in the 90s. These days, he can be found anywhere the seas are deep, crystal clear, and if there are interesting underwater formations to be explored. With a profound fascination and love for the gracefulness of the female form, Michael uses this human interaction to capture his art. He also uses the medium of water and unique landscapes to create dreamy and other-worldly images that transport you to another dimension. We were so intrigued by how Michael captures his images that we had to dive in a little deeper and ask him a few questions. Q: Do you hold your breath to do your photography underwater or are you scuba diving? A: It's important to me to always feel the same as the model is feeling, when possible. So, this means that I will always freedive when I photograph freedivers/snorkelers. This also means that no matter the water temperature I will match my outfit with that of the model! She wears a bikini, I will wear a bi...ok, swimming trunks. If the model wears a wetsuit, only then will I also transition into a wetsuit. This is important so you can be exactly as free as she is, or know how cold it is after a while in the water. Q: What are the depths you prefer to shoot in? A: Most of my work is photographed between 15 and 45 feet, although I do work up to around 65 feet for some specific shots. Q: What crazy things have you encountered while shooting? A: A pod of rough-toothed dolphins crashing the shoot must still be the most memorable (and a very rare occurrence.) It was so exciting! Q: How do you visualize each shoot before shooting your subject? A: This is mostly done by feel—I will try to see what kind of skills and movements a model has and adapt my shooting style to her and what I think defines her at her most elegant/beautiful/powerful or fragile moments. By now, everything comes natural and I can trust my instincts to create what is most optimal. The curating afterwards is more conscious though! Q: What’s the most beautiful place you’ve photographed and why? A: The striking white sands of Aruba, the stunning cenotes of Mexico or the beautiful caves of Malta— they compete for beauty and make it very hard to choose, honestly. I think what is most important is water clarity together with some strikingly different surroundings for me. Q: Do you shoot in the Bahamas too? A: I haven't been there yet but would love to shoot there. The Florida Springs, Bonaire and the Maldives are also at the top of my list of places I'm dreaming to go to. Model: Melodie Treviño Location: Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico; 2020 Melodie and I went on a little road trip to find this hidden forest cenote; a beautiful place with slightly milky waters and indirect light shining from above. Melodie is a very experienced cave diver (scuba), so she was comfortable in the dark. The final result of this photo reminds me of some spiritual being from the deep. Her fins resembling mermaid fins is a little coincidence I discovered later, at home. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

Model: Sienna Christine Location: Aruba; 2020 We were doing a photoshoot with Sienna and her sister. We were just about to get out of the water when a large pod of curious rough-toothed dolphins came to check us out! They came right up to us; the curious youngsters being shielded carefully by the adults. Some of them were swimming in close circles around us, emitting a stream of excited sounds in the process. A magnificent experience!

Model: Sienna Christine Location: Aruba; 2020 This turtle acquired the nickname “Dent” because of his chipped armor. He was used to me and generally didn't mind if I got close; I moved very slowly and gracefully. The model kept a respectful distance while he cruised into my view, and this moment became the perfect capture and a great memory for Sienna.

Model: Melodie Treviño Location: Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico; 2020 My photos are as much memories, as they are impressions of a moment or place, hence, I permit myself a degree of freedom in how they end up looking. It sets me apart from other photographers and provides a more creative expression. Every color has a psychological impact and a meaning. The warm magenta-pink tones, as seen in this image, strengthen the divine femininity that I love to capture.

These had to be overcome the same way I overcame other challenges in my life, including serious health issues. By facing initial fear and insecurity, tapping into my own inner power, trusting the Universe, and then taking positive action to realize my dreams made this possible. Suahuatica

O

ur featured photographer, Michael, captured our attention awhile back and we couldn’t wait to feature his work. While he primarily prefers to shoot under the sea, his creativity is not limited to the underwater world. Traveling throughout the Caribbean and Cyprus, Michael explores the depths and varying landscapes of the ocean, a common thread that connects us all, no matter where we call home. Michael’s perspective as an artist comes from his studies in documentary and art photography at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 2009. Although he was initially drawn to fine art and documentary subjects, he finally combined his passion for the ocean with his academics in 2015. This is when “Suahuatica” was born. An underwater world that Michael uses to create most of his beautiful images are shot under the sea or in various waterways around the world. Currently, he is in Cyprus where he will spend most of this year. In the wintertime, Michael heads to warmer, tropical locations around the globe in search for clear water. Although Michael specializes in underwater art and seaside swimwear photography, he also provides guided cave and cenote exploration wherever he travels. “I love science fiction! The underwater world with its lack of gravity and caves in particular, provide the perfect setting to allow me to capture those other-worldly environments, along with the lack of gravity allow me to capture my images that I associate with that realm. As an adult, I forgot that I had a deep appreciation of 60s-80s sci-fi pocketbook art, where both the intense colors and contrasts, bizarre environments and heroic but sensual and hyper feminine were depicted as the covers. My younger self has been reading those books since my early youth. Since I lack drawing skills then and now, (I think I got stuck at the level of a 10-year-old), my photography has provided me with a way to share my visual interests with people. Not only that, but I hope that my creative imagery helps show the beauty, uniqueness and fragility of the underwater world, contextualized by the human form and for personal identification. Capturing a world below the surface allows anyone to fall in love with the ocean, no matter where they live. People tend to be more careful and protect what they love, so that remains my number one goal," explains Michael. Beach Life

It’s a Sunshine State of Mind

K

urt Stevens is no stranger to Vero Beach. He is as deeply rooted as the oaks are on Ladybug Lane. He loves boating, fishing, and surfing our coastal community every chance he can get. His music has a beachy-relaxing vibe, mixed with some Nashville sounds, and his latest new single is his best song yet. The new single, Sunshine State of Mind, is the perfect tune for those dog days of summer. In 2019, he released Once in a Blue Moon, and his track “I Already Know” turned heads on the local circuit and proved that he was ready for the big leagues. This playlist favorite landed on Spotify’s “New Boots” playlist and earned over 1 million streams across all platforms. We sat down with Kurt to see what’s next on the horizon!

Q: How did you come up with the title of your new release? A: I sat down to write the song in Nashville right after I just got back from a trip to Vero Beach. I was just trying to describe the way I feel when I’m in Florida. Spending time with family and friends in the sun, on the water, and on the beach are places where I feel the most relaxed. There’s nothing better. Florida is the “Sunshine State” and with good reason and I wanted to capture that in a song. Q: When do you feel you are most creative? A: I tend to have a creative reaction to anything that inspires or affects me on an emotional level. It could be a scene from a movie, a conversation I overhear at a bar, hearing a song for the first time, or soaking in the outdoors. I have a notepad in my phone where I write down song titles and ideas that come from all those different types of inspirations and I go from there. Q: You write and create your songs from the heart. Are you usually in a good place emotionally when a new song comes to you or are you in a not so good place? How long does it take you to write a new song? A: With a song like “Sunshine State of Mind,” I was definitely in a good place emotionally, reflecting on my love for my home state and all that it has to offer. On the other hand, some of my favorite songs that I have written stemmed from heartbreak, being homesick, or loneliness. I think it’s important as a writer to express yourself honestly, and with vulnerability. Some songs take 30 minutes to write, and others can take 2 or 3 hours. It’s different for me every time. Q: What food do you miss the most from home? A: I’m a seafood lover so I always miss that when I’m in Nashville. There’s nothing like catching a blackfin tuna, chilling it on the boat with some soy sauce, and eating it before you even get back to land. Q: Are you a sunrise or sunset kind of guy? A: I love a good sunset, especially the ones you can catch in the wintertime from the deck at Riverside Cafe. There’s something special about winding down a day with a cold beer in your hand and a beautiful sunset in the sky. Q: Who is your inspiration/idol in the music industry? Why? A: My first country concert ever was Kenny Chesney in 2011 at Cruzan Amphitheater. That show hit me like a Mack truck (in a good way) and I instantly knew that I wanted to do THAT. Whatever THAT is that Kenny 26

September-October 2021

was doing. The honesty and relatability of his songs, the energy of his performances, combined with the sheer scale of his tours (he’s one of the only artists that sells out 30+ NFL stadiums every year) has always been inspiring to me. Q: If you could perform with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? A: I think sharing the stage with Kenny Chesney would be a pretty surreal full circle moment. Yeah... I’d have to say Kenny. Q: When you’re not writing & performing music, what is your favorite thing to do? A: I love fishing, surfing, golfing, and cooking. Luckily, I have the latter two in Nashville, but when I’m back in Vero, I try to surf and fish as much as possible. Q: If you could be anything other than a musician, what would it be? A: My friends might call me crazy for saying this, but I have always had the bug to be an actor. I haven’t done any acting on any level at all, but the idea of being creative in that way has always been interesting to me. Q: We know you can sing, but can you dance too? A: I am by no means a good dancer, but if the music is loud enough and if I have had a little liquid courage I can get down. Q: What do you dream about doing next? A: I’m a believer in the idea that “it’s all about the journey, not the destination.” I’m enjoying the journey and celebrating all the steps on the way. For now, I’m just excited to be putting out new music and connecting with more people who enjoy it. That’s really the dream… I’m already living it, now I’m just trying to live it on a bigger scale. Linda Hudson

Madame Mayor

W

hen you see Mayor Linda Hudson of Fort Pierce going about the city, attending meetings, and cutting ribbons, you are seeing an elected official who for her first term of office, decided not to accept a salary. That got people's attention. For four years she declined, giving the city back a whopping total of $120,000. But as Linda reminded me, she did take her vehicle allowance. It's obvious that Linda Hudson loves her city and its people, and the feeling is mutual. Everyone knows the mayor and if you are lucky enough to have lunch with her in a Fort Pierce restaurant, people will stop by your table to greet Madame Mayor. After graduating from the University of Florida and marrying, Linda left for Chicago in 1969. Widowed in 1992, two years later she decided to return to Fort Pierce, the place she always considered home. Fast forward to 2008 and the great recession. Fort Pierce was facing some tough economic times. Linda was looking for volunteer opportunities and became interested in the city's budget. Feeling that there was excessive and freewheeling spending, she began cutting her "governmental" teeth as she sought to regain the financial health of the city. In 2011, she decided to see if being in the public eye suited her. Campaigning early for the position of Fort Pierce Mayor, Linda learned that "she was born to it.”

28

September-October 2021

Mayor Hudson’s mantra is to be above the fray: never mean spirited, always helpful, diplomatic, and concerned. She shines at the 8am monthly “Coffee with The Mayor” meetings held at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club on the third Friday of the month from September through May. Sponsored by Main Street and the Fort Pierce Yacht Club, it's a wonderful grab bag of locals, nonprofits, city organizations, new businesses, and residents who care about their community. Enjoy a free donut and coffee or tea with about 100 or more fellow residents or stakeholders (non-residents who have a stake in the city), and you can get the full report of what's happening. You can also make your own announcement, as many do. Mayor Hudson is the epitome of southern graciousness as she emcees. In March of 2015, President Obama stopped at Treasure Coast International Airport. Mayor Hudson and then Congressman Patrick Murphy, were the only elected officials asked to be there for the photo op with the President. Linda will tell you that in retirement you can only play so much. Being mayor validates her and puts the proverbial pep in her step each morning. Her fairy godmother wish for Fort Pierce is that it will prosper but never lose its small town feel and Key West funkiness. She hopes that it never becomes part of the "urban sprawl" that continues to engulf Florida. Through smart growth and community input, Fort Pierce can move forward successfully. Today’s Lesson

Building Character

E

ach year, I like to reflect on the “big picture” of what matters most in my children’s education. What is essential no matter where life takes them? Recently, I was reminded of my work as a flight attendant in my early twenties. The type of aircraft I was assigned to was small, and quite often I was the only flight attendant in the tiny cabin. The pilots were in the front of the plane behind a closed locked door, while everyone else squeezed in the back. One hot summer day, with a plane full of irritated passengers, I thought to myself, “my boss will not see how I react to this rude guy.” However, even though my supervisors could not see my interaction with the passengers, I decided right then that I was going to be intentionally kind and helpful no matter who sees me or how rudely I was treated. I was determined that every person would get, at the very least, a warm, genuine smile from me. From that day on, I made it my mission to create a fun and peaceful atmosphere on every single flight! I was committed to bringing smiles and laughter to our passengers. Although I am no longer a flight attendant, my life as a stay-at-home mom is not that different. I still choose joy and kindness when my children are complaining or irritable. Those small habitual choices I made years ago as a flight attendant still matter today. I realize the biggest gift I can teach my children is to form habits that will blossom into good character. Identify the character traits you would like your children to work on and practice together as a family. In our home, we try to focus on one habit every week or two. Reading stories together inspires us to make good choices and is a great way to have these discussions. I’m so grateful that my mom taught me the habit of “doing the right thing even when no one is looking.” It paid off. A year after working for the airlines, I received one of the top awards at our company for “Flight Attendant of the Year.” I still chuckle when I think of this award. It's a small reminder that my daily choices made an impact, even when it may have seemed liked no one was watching. I hope you are inspired to intentionally help your children form good habits and develop life-altering character! Here are just a few habits my family has on our “to-do” list from “Laying Down the Rails for Children” by Lanaya Gore. I hope that you and your family can enjoy practicing these together: • Attention • Obedience • Gentleness • Kindness • Thinking • Diligence • Integrity • Self-Control • Truthfulness • Personal Initiative Written and photography by Olivia Assaf

hef Dan Grunbeck has always felt at home by the water… and in the kitchen. Born in Long Island, New York, his family would bring him along on trips to harvest oysters and clams at a young age, igniting a love for fresh foods and cooking. He followed his passion and attended Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, graduating in 2011. He quickly honed his skills at some of the best resorts and restaurants in the world. His impressive resume includes stints in Kiawah Island at The Sanctuary in Charleston, South Carolina; The Little Nell and The Aspen Mountain Club in Aspen, Colorado; The Peninsula Grill at The Planters Inn in Charleston, South Carolina, and The Lodge and Spa and Brush Creek Ranch in Wyoming. He brings this wealth of hospitality experience to his new position as Executive Chef at Cobalt at Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa. During his stint at Brush Creek Ranch, one of the world’s best luxury ranch resorts, he worked with some of the best cattle producers in the world, developing the resort’s prestigious Wagyu beef program, harvesting premium

meat and testing cattle for prime quality. At Cobalt, Chef Dan hopes to apply this unique knowledge to the beachside restaurant’s new menus. “Many people don’t know that the first American Wagyu beef was produced in Florida. I am excited to identify some of the outstanding local ranches in the area and forging strong relationships,” he shares. His menu will also feature prime meats from around the country, local ingredients, and some of his most beloved plates. When he’s not in the kitchen, you can find Chef Dan with his wife on the Indian River, perfecting their kite boarding and fly fishing skills, or visiting his family in South Carolina and Alabama. Balanced Tiger

Making Functional Mushrooms Tasty and Easy to Consume

B

alanced Tiger, the mushroom-based food product company, announces their launch this August. Founded by two Vero Beach natives, Balanced Tiger launches the local brand’s first product, the adaptogenic mushroom bar. Childhood friends raised in Vero Beach, Adriano Bordoli and Jackson Gorman put their business strengths and entrepreneurial minds together and discovered an untapped market of mushroom based products. Of this, Balanced Tiger was born. “We are all working towards balance and self-sustainability in our lives, and a balanced-healthy life begins with how you fuel the body,” says Adriano Bordoli, Co-Founder of Balanced Tiger. “In modern times, healthy foods shouldn't taste averse, be inconvenient, or feel like a chore to consume. At Balanced Tiger, we make it easy to add some of the world's most nutrient-dense foods on the planet—functional mushrooms—to your daily routine. No mushroom taste, just the added benefit.” The term “adaptogenic mushroom” comes with its misconceptions. Many hear mushrooms and think of the trippy fungi that cause hallucinations, but

42

September-October 2021

that’s not where this is going. Functional mushrooms, like Chaga, Cordyceps, and Lion’s Mane, are those that provide health benefits beyond their nutritional content. For hundreds of years, these ancient superfoods have been used in eastern medicine, working through unique polysaccharides (beta glucans), antioxidants, and vitamin D to balance your energy levels and immune system, manage stress, and ultimately bring your body back to homeostasis. Are mushrooms the future of wellness? Despite the growth, the Balanced Tiger team believes the mushroom market is also held back in the health and wellness product industry by taste and accessibility. The addition of mushrooms to more familiar consumer products, beyond the current market of capsules and powders, is expected to accelerate the consumer movement. Balanced Tiger’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip mushroom bar is available for purchase online at BalancedTiger.com and through local retailers, like Chelsea's on Cardinal. THE ABODE HOME & GARDEN

Aiello Landscape

A European Palm that Feels at Home in Florida

W

ith so many varieties, choosing the right palm tree for your landscape can be a difficult decision. The gardening adage, “right plant, right place” also applies when choosing a palm for your garden, therefore it is important to be aware of future growth habits, cold hardiness, and disease susceptibility when choosing palms. One palm that is slow growing, cold hardy, durable, compact in growth, and clustering is the European fan palm, Chamaerops humilis. The European fan palm, sometimes called Mediterranean fan palm, can grow up to 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, but takes years to get that large. The spread depends on the number of individual trunks the palm has. One of the most appealing attributes of the palm is its durability. Established European fan palms can survive temperatures of ten degrees Fahrenheit or even lower and could handle any temperature mother nature brings to the Treasure Coast. The foliage of the palm may be damaged at these temperatures, but the trunk will survive, and new growth will eventually push out. The physical attributes are what make this palm so appealing to our design team. We like to use the palm as an accent piece because it provides a very Florida feel to a garden. The palm fronds are held on short, curved trunks that produce small clusters of yellow flowering seed pods in the spring. The palm fronds do have spiny thorns, so thought should be given to the location of this palm in the garden. It is recommended to keep this palm a good distance from walkways or heavy foot traffic.

Garden Elegance (772) 563-0071 | AielloLandscape.com 46

September-October 2021

Another benefit of this palm is its adaptability to locations in the garden. It can handle full sun environments or shadier areas. It also performs well in large planters. European fan palms can be a great choice for container gardens, whether they are kept indoors as a houseplant or outdoors. When planting in a container, make sure to have lightweight soil and good drainage. With proper irrigation and care, these palms are very slow growing and can last quite a long time in a large planter. In colder regions, they can be kept outside during the warm summer months and indoors in the winter. Young or mature, this palm makes a stunning structural element in any garden. Home Décor

Integrating Beautiful Photography

W

e all have that one (or more) blank wall in our home that we have the grandest intentions of gracing with some sort of art but are unsure of what would look good there. You pass by it regularly no doubt and think, “I should really get around to hanging something there.” Photography is a popular choice as a visual “space-filler” in our homes, but are you utilizing the photography on your wall to best enhance the aesthetic appeal of your space? Here’s a few things to consider when hanging photography on your wall: Landscapes: been there, done that. We all love Ansel Adams but it’s a little trite at this point. If you are a nature lover, consider a more abstract take on a pastoral scene rather than a standard landscape. The frames are as important as what is inside of them. Consider this: do you want people to notice the photo itself, or the frame? Simple, non-ornamental frames in metal or wood tone best compliment photographs. Keep things looking contemporary. We all have old family photos we love. If using family photos as wall art, consider having them printed in black and white or sepia tones to create more uniformity and a fresher look. That

48

September-October 2021

precious picture of your kids will look just as precious in black and white, and a neutral toned photo wall will be less visually cluttered than one with a cacophony of colors. It won’t help the teased and tortured “mall bangs” you had in your 80’s high school photos, though. That’s a sin that can’t be erased. Above all, what is most important when choosing photography as décor is this: do you like looking at it? As basic as it seems, the point of anything you hang on your wall, aside from complementing the rest of your décor, is to be visually pleasing. Just because you think something would look “good” in a certain spot doesn’t necessarily mean you want to look at it every day (case in point: your mall bangs). Consider having a temporary print made on paper that you can tape up and rearrange as needed to see if you really want to commit to making a photograph a part of your home’s visual story. Down Sea Charters

Reeling in the Final Months of Summer

S

ummer is an amazing season throughout the state of Florida. For many, it can be overwhelming negotiating the summer storms and heat. However, if I had to choose one time of the year that really captured the true Floridian lifestyle, it would be now. For many locals, summer is the preferred time to be on the water. Sunny skies, crystal clear water, and incredible fishing and boating opportunities present themselves throughout this time of the year. During this time of year, one can expect cooler water temperatures along the beaches and nearshore reefs. This phenomenon is known as an “upwelling.” Cold water from far offshore sweeps into the shallows. It is this cold water that creates an astounding environment for all species that frequent the Treasure Coast this time of the year. Mahi-mahi, sailfish, kingfish, blackfin tuna, atlantic bonito, as well as cobia, all show up in abundant numbers as this cool nutrient rich water appears. As for boaters, one can expect beautiful conditions. For days on end, a common weather forecast will be light offshore winds in the evening and into the mornings, followed by light onshore winds in the afternoon. This makes for an incredible experience out on the water. Whether one wants to hit the sandbar with family and friends or run offshore in search of incredible game fishing, this time of year epitomizes what Florida is all about. A Marine Biologist

My Life in the Sea

F

or as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a marine biologist and somehow, I made that happen. As an adult in my mid-thirties, I’ve worked around the world studying everything from dolphins to sea turtles. Despite growing up in Northern Virginia, the ocean is in my blood. I spent my childhood bodysurfing with my grandmother on Long Island in New York and snorkeling the coral reefs of the Florida Keys with my dad. I even got to try SNUBA diving—a form of surface-supplied diving that uses an underwater breathing system—at just 8 years old. When it came time for college, I never considered anything other than a science major. I earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science from Virginia Tech. After graduating, I worked as a biological technician for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in North Carolina, assisting on a range of projects that included staring at photos to count the barnacles on dolphin fins, as well as sleuthing through decaying dolphin stomachs from stranded animals, to document their contents. After working for a couple years, I attended graduate school to earn a

52

September-October 2021

master’s degree in marine biology from Florida Atlantic University. For my research, I worked with Denise Herzing, Ph.D., founder, and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project. I spent my summers living at sea in the Bahamas, freediving among dolphins to study their behavior, communication, and ecology. Even with the temperamental crew, seasickness during rough seas, and painful jellyfish stings, it was a dream come true. Habituated to human presence, these dolphins granted me access to the most intimate moments of their lives. I observed calves learn to swim and hunt, watched mothers nurse their young and glimpsed males fight for the attention of coy females. Watching their relationships and struggles due to human activity, ultimately led to my interest in storytelling and conservation photography. Now, I strive to combine my scientific background, writing, and artistry to help people emotionally connect to wild subjects and experience the wonders of nature. I hope my efforts in science communication increase ocean literacy, raise awareness for conservation issues, and inspire a sense of stewardship and positive action toward the environment. Soaring the Skies

The Swallow-tailed Kite

T

ypically, around Valentine’s Day, in the Southeastern North American regions, we start seeing the arrival of a very distinguished black and white colored raptor with a large scissor or forked tail that soars so perfectly above our tree lines. The Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus) are one of many in the kite species in the North American regions. They specifically migrate from Brazil to our region to raise young and prefer subtropical or tropical forested ecosystems. When these raptors begin their migration, it takes anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to make their journey. This is all dependent on head winds, storms they might encounter, or a beneficial tail wind that is consistent enough to take flight from the northern Yucatan across the Gulf of Mexico. Some landing for the first time anywhere from Louisiana to the Florida Keys, as they fly to their final destinations. They typically will go directly back to their same region of where they were raised from Big Cypress to the Everglades, to southeastern Georgia or Alabama. The adults will return sometimes to the specific location where they and their mate will rebuild their nest and raise young once again. These birds are low risk in terms of being threatened or near extinction. They are quite prolific and a very strong species able to preserve through many types of conditions. Finding their nests takes a lot of patience. It can take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours of solid scouting once you have identified an area where you might have seen them perpetually soar above. A nest will be high in a pine

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

or cypress tree, tightly packed with Spanish moss and smaller twigs. In the early morning hours, they will position themselves to the eastern side where the sunlight will shine on them, as they will preen for 1 to 2 hours before taking flight for the day. Yes, flight for the day! It is amazing to watch as they will find prey to eat from treetops, crotches of palms of which they are seeking snakes, lizards, anoles, and sometimes predacious on other birds that nest very high in trees, such as crows. If not able to find any of those food resources that they are known for, they will snatch dragonflies from mid-flight to eat. Once food is captured, watch their amazing avian skills as they eat on the wing! These birds are known for laying two eggs, but only one will prevail and be raised. Once this baby bird is able to fly, the adults teach it all their tricks of how to forage and exist, as they prepare it for the great journey back to Brazil. This great migration return is so unique as the adults will begin to ‘stage’ in mass forms around August to return south. Once all the adults take flight by themselves, all the juveniles take part in the same ritual as their parents a week to two later. All by their young selves in a large flock, they too start the great journey back to South America for the first time. They will respectfully arrive in South America at the same time as their parents and it’s been noted that they may have been flapping more than soaring. To learn more about the Swallow-tailed Kites’ stellar adventures, take a moment to visit Avian Research and Conservation Institute at Arcinst.org. Here, you can follow flights of birds that are sponsored with micro-GPS tracking systems. For more information, contact Brian@NativeBirdBoxes.com and follow along on @NativeBirdBoxes. o improve human health, we must protect ocean health. Under this important initiative, Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is focused on discovering vital cures from the oceans and understanding the threats of declining environmental conditions to human health. For nearly three decades, Brian Lapointe, Ph.D., has conducted significant research on the Caribbean region. One project focuses on the Belize Barrier Reef where he is analyzing how an increase in land-based nutrient pollution is changing the composition of the ocean. “Coral reefs serve as biodiverse ecosystems that provide crucial support to human and wildlife communities. However, nutrient pollution, such as increased nitrogen from sewage, is leading to the rise of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and algal-dominated reefs,” said Lapointe. “Not only does this damage the coral reefs on which so much life depends, but HABs kill animals and make people very sick.” Dr. Lapointe’s research serves as an important step for informing watershed management by understanding the causes behind the rise of these toxic organisms. Ultimately, his work at FAU Harbor Branch will help sustain the coral reef systems in Belize and the Caribbean and the many important services they provide, such as fisheries, tourism, and climate change resilience. Similarly, Tracy Mincer, Ph.D., is focused on the health of our oceans and communities in the Caribbean. Sargassum seaweed, another source of HABs, and plastic debris in the region carry potent, never before recognized

56

pathogens. “By studying these pathogens and better understanding how they spread through seaweed and plastic, I hope to help clinicians in treating the dangerous diseases caused by them,” Mincer added. The study of this previously unrecognized and expanding pathogen source can save lives in the Caribbean by informing policymakers, health officials, and clinicians to handle and treat an emerging pathogenic threat. FAU Harbor Branch also believes in a future where people can responsibly farm seafood without sacrificing the health of marine ecosystems. “To achieve this vision, our scientists collaborate with academia, government, private sector, non-profit institutions and foundations to research and develop innovative solutions to feed the world sustainably and replenish depleted natural fish stocks,” said FAU Harbor Branch Executive Director Jim Sullivan, Ph.D. “This research is significant in the Caribbean where communities depend on seafood for their lives and livelihoods.” Such work is vital for Caribbean marine ecosystems and the people who depend on seafood for their livelihoods and welfare. However, time is running out, and we need to grow these programs to accelerate this essential research and training. There has never been a more critical time to find solutions for sustainable seafood needs while preserving the world’s fisheries. To learn more, visit FAU.edu/hboi. Love, Light, and Growth

Cultivating Your Green Thumb

H

onestly, I wish I had a green thumb. I wish I was one of those plant ladies that has a million and one different green friends looking beautiful and fresh. But I don’t. Sadly, I move around too much to be able to give them my love and devotion. Maybe one day I’ll have, not one, but many rooms full of them. Meanwhile, I will cultivate my green thumb in other ways. You see, I learned this philosophy a while ago. Our green thumb is not particular to our ability to actually plant, grow, nurture, water, and care for plants. This also translates to our day-to-day life and the people we choose to interact with. Start with you first. Care for yourself as you would for a friend. Honor the seasons of your life and feed yourself good wholesome thoughts. Then, water your soul with new perspectives, surrounding yourself with things and places where your soul feels warmth and can fully bloom. May we not forget, similar to our earthly garden, weeding out all that is not healthy for us. We exercise our green thumb in the life of others by nurturing, caring, and

58

September-October 2021

holding space for those around us. Perhaps it is in the form of bringing light to their life through an act of kindness or providing words of growth when they seek counsel. Maybe it’s providing hope when they need extra “watering,” or helping to rearrange internally or externally better blooming conditions. Again, sharing some wisdom on where the “garden of life” needs to be weeded. Whatever the case may be, life is an opportunity to not only water our dreams and bloom as individuals, but to care and nurture those around us in whatever role we may find ourselves in. As sons, daughters, parents, teachers, managers, and the infinite positions we encounter daily, there is a chance to cultivate our green thumb. There is power in tending to the needs of ourselves and others, in giving care, offering light and water, honoring seasons and setting our humanity in motion. After all, whatever we cultivate and put out into the world comes back to us today or in another season. May we remember to water, nurture, and place ourselves in those places that offer us light and growth always. Follow Soulfully: Inner Work & Meditation on @bymeditacionesdeunaloca. Holistic Wellness Services

Veterans Benefits for Acupuncture

T

hose of us who have never been in the military cannot possibly imagine the physical and emotional toll of serving our country. The sacrifices made by these men and women range from a lost limb to loss of peace of mind. Although decorated in badges of honor, many carry the burden of severe injury, debilitating pain, and PTSD. Often, Vets are haunted by memories of intense combat, fighting for survival and the tragic, untimely deaths of fellow troops. Veterans also feel the responsibility of the collateral damage of military operations, including lost lives of their own. Currently, the disturbing reality is that suicide among Veterans is at an all-time high. A recent article on NPR reported that since 9/11, military suicides are four times higher than deaths from war operations. Approximately 30,177 active-duty personnel and Veterans of military conflicts of the last 20 years have died by suicide, while an estimated 7,057 service members have lost their lives as a result of military operations during this same time period. The Veteran’s Administration provides health care to those who’ve served. However, the process to see a doctor can be slow and options for non-traditional care have been limited. In response to the opioid epidemic, the VA began to look for alternative treatments for chronic pain. After expanding services to include acupuncture, the VA quickly found it to be a desirable and effective solution for difficult cases. The overwhelming success of integrating acupuncture into the VA medical centers has led to the VA currently offering more holistically minded wellness services for Veterans.

The VA wants to make acupuncture accessible to all Veterans. If the closest VA medical center is over 60 miles away from a Veteran’s home, they have the ability to seek care from an approved community provider. Since the closest VA Medical Center to the Treasure Coast is in West Palm Beach, the VA has credentialed Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine in Vero Beach to provide acupuncture services to local area Veterans. A Veteran simply needs to obtain a referral from a doctor at the VA. Once our office receives the approved referral, we contact the Veteran to schedule an appointment. All billing is done through the office and there is no out-ofpocket cost to the Veteran. A typical authorization allows for twelve acupuncture sessions and additional visits are approved as needed. At Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine, Veterans can receive acupuncture with Amanda Millian, AP, DOM. She has treated over 30 Veterans in the past nine months and has helped them obtain relief from back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Amanda hopes more Veterans become aware that acupuncture is a covered benefit. For more information about VA coverage for acupuncture, please call the office at (772) 564-8383. The Dog Days of Summer

Keeping it Cool

A

s the temperature is rising, so is the temptation to break out the clippers and give your dog a buzz cut. Before you do, consider how your dog’s coat works. Though we humans may overheat wearing multiple layers on a hot day, a dog’s coat is usually designed to naturally thermoregulate in cool and hot temperatures. Many dogs have a lighter undercoat which provides an air cushion and is used primarily for trapping air and insulation. The second layer of the coat, also known as the topcoat or guard hairs, are usually tougher hairs which help protect your dog from sunburn, abrasions, and bug bites. By shaving off the topcoat, a dog is left more exposed. This can inadvertently lead to discomfort, disease, and skin cancer. The undercoat usually sheds out naturally in the spring and is replaced with a lighter layer for summer weather. Some breeds, such as the doodles, have a thicker under coat and mat easily. It’s preferable to brush frequently to prevent matting since this is a common reason for shaving. Bathing and swimming will also tighten mats, so try to brush gently and as frequently as possible. With doodle breeds

62

and mixed breeds, the coat may vary with the genetic mix and even coat variations on different areas of the body. To understand your furry family member’s coat type and needs, ask your veterinarian and groomer for their thoughts and recommendations. Don’t forget to keep access to shade and cool water at all times for a safe and enjoyable summer! Vero Beach Veterinary Hospital warmly welcomes all pets and their families. Waldo’s Secret Garden

Love Blooms Here

S

ince the 1950s, Waldo’s Secret Garden has always been a special place for entertaining. While it was the family’s original homestead, the houses have always been a place to bring people together. The Dodgers played the Tokyo Giants during spring training once and they all came together in the garden for a big party. Waldo Sexton would have his friends, authors, and even Zora Neal Hurston over for lunch. Between 1961 and 1974, the astronauts from The Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo came to Vero Beach from Cape Canaveral to shoot at the family’s dove field. Afterwards, the Tripson’s would throw a roaring party for them. All these people have made a monumental mark in history. The equal denominator for all of this is love and friendship. The property has brought so many people together, new friends and old. It’s a place where love blooms continuously. Whether you are there to celebrate a new love or a lost love, the garden offers an abundance of beauty for every important life event, big or small. 64

As any new business begins, my parents, Mark and Hildie and I, realized there was an opportunity to open the land to the community—so we just started doing it. There was no business plan really, just a family knew what they wanted to do. After 12 years in business and over 200 weddings to date, we are honored to continue this tradition of throwing a dang good party! Waldo’s Secret Garden is available for weddings, dinner parties, company events, celebrations of life, ghost tours, and just about whatever else your little (or big) heart might desire. In honor and memory of my mom, Hildie Anne Tripson, we are committed more than ever to host the best venue for your life celebrations at Waldo’s Secret Garden… because love blooms here. To book your event, please contact me at WaldosSecretGarden.com or (772) 562-6790 by appointment only. Written by Charlotte Tripson Photography by Alyssa Tranchilla

What is a Certified Financial Transitionist?

O

ur experience often told us that our 25 years of practicing CFP (Certified Financial Planner) training didn’t fully equip us to skillfully handle clients who were anticipating or experiencing major life events. They sometimes behaved in unexpected and uncharacteristic ways, and we didn’t know why. There were times that we simply didn’t know what to do with them. We knew we needed a different way of doing what we were doing, and perhaps more importantly, we needed a different way of interacting with these clients. We had to look outside of financial planning for research and expertise. We found the answer in the training to achieve the CeFT (Certified Financial Transitionist) certification. We now have a clear understanding of what it takes to much better serve to guild those who are going through a financial transition. There are two sides of money: the technical and the personal. The best financial advisors are highly competent in the technical. However, CFP training often falls short when dealing with the personal side of financial change or transitions. CeFT training includes a full year of behavioral finance to supplement the CFP technical training, to provide the expertise to better serve these very special clients to far superior outcomes. Examples of financial transitions include Divorce, Inheritance, Legal Settlement, Retirement, Sale of a Business, Loss of a Spouse, and Sports and Entertainment Contracts and other Windfalls. Craig Phillips, CFP, AIF, CeFT is one of only four practicing CeFT practitioners in the state of Florida. He is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Client 1st Advisory Group, a Fiduciary Registered Investment Advisor with offices in Vero Beach and Clearwater, Florida. Since the inception of FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, our scientific researchers have dedicated their efforts to intimately understanding the function of fragile ecosystems along the coast and in the ocean. They examine environmental responses to pressures like coastal land development, nutrient and plastics pollution, ocean acidification, warming temperatures and overfishing. Study results are essential for policy makers as they develop sound conservation, management and restoration strategies.
