LIFE
THIS IS US
WELL SAID
Sit. Stay. This issue is all about dogs! Our canine companions enrich our lives in so many ways. We currently have three: Max is an 11-year-old silver standard poodle; Otis is a 4-year-old rescue; and our latest addition is Rüger, a 4-month-old Weimaraner puppy in training. Rüger was a gift to our daughter this summer. They both will head off to the University of South Florida in December to be college roommates. Some days our home is a kennel, full of barking, wrestling and craziness. However, every day when we all walk through the door, we are greeted by wagging tails and sheer excitement. Maybe that’s the best part of having a dog. They love us unconditionally. They are great listeners. Dogs make you laugh. There are so many great qualities in a dog if they are treated with love and respect. Dogs take training and discipline but in a kind and loving way. Some puppies are fragile like humans, they are all unique in every way. Finding the best dog should depend on your lifestyle—make sure you pick one that matches what you love to do. Personalities differ in every dog. If you are calm, usually your dog will be, too. We hope you enjoy reading about Mike Sommers, a well-known dog trainer just south of us. Mike and his wife, Joann, have been with dogs their entire life. Mike is the best of the best when it comes to field training. A lot of work and trust goes into training a dog. It’s amazing to see the enthusiasm each dog has for its job. These dogs were so excited to be doing what they were doing! We’ve also got more dog features—read on! It’s hard to believe the holidays are almost here. Let’s celebrate! This is a time for parties and family gatherings. For some, it can be hectic, but it doesn’t have to be. Take time to truly enjoy your friends and family. Slow down. Savor the moment. Sit by the fire. Laugh. Parties and puppies…we can learn a lot from our dogs.
Cheers to a fabulous holiday season!

Dogs
Roger Caras once said, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” We couldn’t agree more and that’s why this issue of Portfolio is dedicated to our faithful canine companions. As four-legged members of our families, our dogs deserve the best. We’re constantly encouraged by their loyalty and unconditional love and we look for ways to return their affection. Let’s be honest… we spoil them rotten! In this issue, you’ll find an inspiring story about the Navy SEAL Museum’s Canine Project, which places working dogs with veterans and active-duty military personnel who require support. There’s also information on training your dog by Mike Sommers, as well as some class-act companies creating fashionable accessories for your pooch, including collars, leashes and crates. This holiday season, give thanks for the playful puppies, loyal lapdogs and happy hounds who make our lives complete!

Elevating the Sporting Dog and Canine Companion
F
or some, breeding and training dogs is more than just a hobby. It’s a way of life. Mike Sommers is the second generation, following his father Ray Sommers, to train dogs of all breeds for hunting and obedience. He became a full-time professional trainer after graduating from college in 1974. Mike created an all-inclusive sporting facility in Wisconsin that included a private hunting club, training, breeding and a sporting clay course. This facility was written about in newspapers, The Pointing Dog Journal, and was filmed for television newscasts and sporting programs. He moved to Jupiter in 2000 to concentrate on the training and breeding of quality sporting/companion dogs and obedience for all breeds. He breeds a limited number of Labrador retrievers and English field bred Cocker Spaniels for hunting. Mike evaluates dogs for breeding with an experienced, unbiased eye. “The most qualified breeders are those who are also objective trainers of their own stock because through the training process they see the strengths and weaknesses of their dogs,” Mike explains. His training experience includes all phases of upland and waterfowl hunting, AKC Hunt Tests and obedience training, regardless of the specific breed. Mike is an expert at developing a dog’s natural assets and trains not only the dog, but also the owner/handler so they become a competent team. The AKC Master National Hunt Test held in Alabama in October 2012 was a challenging series of five tests held over a 10-day period and featured the best Master Hunter titled field dogs from across the country. A black Labrador retriever, Bynum’s Magnum Goose, qualified and was awarded the Pewter Plate trophy under Mike’s training and handling. He has titled many dogs at all levels. As an author, he has contributed to such publications as Gun Dog and The Retriever Journal. Articles have been published about him in The Pointing Dog Journal, Retriever Quarterly, Shot Gun Sports and Shooting Sportsman. For Mike Sommers, training and breeding quality sporting and companion dogs is in his blood. Mike is available for seminars and demonstrations. To learn more about Mike Sommers’ Sporting Dogs, call (561) 743-7617 or email sommersfinesportdogs@gmail.com.

The Canine Project I
n 1943, the Navy took command of portions of the barrier islands off of Florida’s East Coast and established the U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base, Fort Pierce. Navy Scouts & Raiders, Naval Combat Demolition Units, and Underwater Demolition Teams, the forerunners of today’s Navy, were trained here. The first NCDU class commenced in 1943 under Draper L. Kauffman, considered “The Father of Underwater Demolition.” After observing the Scouts & Raiders’ rigorous training regimen, he condensed their eight-week training program into one week and incorporated it into the NCDU training program. “Hell Week” is still the inaugural training precedent that stands today in BUD/S, Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL. The training is so difficult, it claims the same attrition rate presently as it did in the 1940s, typically 75 percent. In 1944, Kauffman commanded the newly formed UDT-5 in the Pacific. The U.S. Naval Amphibious Training Base, Fort Pierce closed in 1946, but not before more than 140,000 men received revolutionary training - 3,500 of these men were NCDUs. After World War II, there were virtually no signs that Fort Pierce had ever been the site of a vital naval training base. That changed in 1981 when several original UDT members reunited to share memories of their training days. These Frogmen agreed to encourage community officials to preserve these memories and educate the public about the integral role Fort Pierce played in the war effort. Of primary concern was honoring the service of the men who trained at the USNATB, the birthplace of the Frogman. The Navy SEAL Museum, named to include today’s elite SEAL Teams formally established by the U.S. Navy under the direction of President John F. Kennedy in 1962, opened its doors on Veterans Day in 1985, with hundreds of World War II Frogmen in attendance. Boasting one of only two Blackhawk helicopters on public display, a Mark V Special Operations Craft, and the Captain Phillips’ Maersk Alabama lifeboat, the Navy SEAL Museum is home to many unique artifacts.

The museum’s mission is to preserve the history and heritage of this elite group of warriors. They do this by educating the public with historical artifacts, interactive exhibits and community outreach events. It’s much more than a history museum. Part of preserving the heritage of U.S. Navy SEALs is proactively caring for their future. The museum’s Trident House Charities Program provides support for both active duty and veterans of Special Operations Forces. One very important arm of the Trident House Charities Program is the Canine Project. Military working dogs have a long and varied history. War dogs are as ancient as battle itself. There is evidence of dogs in combat as early as mid-7th century BC, utilized by many different civilizations. Military working dogs were an important instrument in combat during the Vietnam War; approximately 5,000 U.S. war dogs were used, saving an estimated 10,000 human lives during that war alone. It wasn’t until after 9/11 the dog program was reinstated among Navy SEALs. Rick Kaiser, executive director of the Navy SEAL Museum, and Ken Corona, assistant executive director, know the significance of the relationship between dog and handler. Working together in the SEAL teams, they saw the need for canine support among their operators and together are responsible for the rebirth of the dog program, one of the most successful programs in the military today. Beyond dogs in war, however, is a very important facet of canine support among our servicemen and women. The Canine Project at the museum focuses less on the canine’s role in external combat, and instead targets the internal demons many of our veterans wrestle. 32

Known for their intelligence and agility, the Belgian Malinois is one of three choice breeds Baden K-9 uses for the program.
SEALs participate in a tactical demonstration in support of the Canine Project.
Working in partnership with Baden K-9 in Ontario, the Canine Project provides military working dogs to the men who need them most. Whether war-weary, or deployed for several months at a time, there are servicemen and families who benefit greatly from the Canine Project. Phil Ryan is the canine handler at the museum and has been instrumental in the creation and continued direction of the program. He works closely with Joshua Perry, owner and lead handler at Baden K-9, to ensure the right dog is placed with the chosen serviceman or veteran. “These dogs are highly versatile, exceptionally intelligent and trained with great discipline,” Phil Ryan says. “From the day they are born, the dogs begin a routine of learning what it means to be a military working dog, even if they never see active combat.” The museum’s Canine Project is primarily focused on placing working dogs with veterans who require support, though sometimes the dogs are placed with men still serving. Different servicemen have different needs, but the common thread is the canine must be stable in any environment. “The dogs are trained with obedience under stress,” Phil explains. “This allows the dogs to obey commands of the handler in any circumstances. These dogs are providing a service to our veterans. They can move through crowds in mass numbers and in loud arenas, without becoming alarmed or startled.” Baden’s Joshua Perry was born into the family business and has worked with dogs his whole life. “At Baden K-9, we follow an ancient philosophy of breeding training and communicating with the dog,” Joshua explains. “Our dogs are descended from lines that remain true to their breeding ancestry for literally hundreds of years. We take our work very seriously and our clients are held in confidence.” To date, multiple dogs have been donated to warriors. This is possible through the generosity of the donors behind the Canine Project. The stories of the men of Special Operations the museum serves are countless, but they can only continue with your support. “The work we do with veterans has been met with this same serious dedication,” Joshua says. “Each dog is given to each individual with a promise of support and availability to our facility. There is a humbling magic that takes place when the dog comes onto the scene. God has blessed us with a gift that He has a purpose for.” Hoplon (“Shield” in Greek) leans on her veteran owner. 34

or your pet, it’s not just a walk… it’s a patrol, a scouting mission. Now you can equip them with Desert K-9’s Mission-Ready Accessories™ that are tough, comfortable and customizable. Handcrafted by a U.S. Army Veteran, these products are made with military grade materials and hardware. Temoc Meza and his wife Erica were constantly disappointed by the poor quality and high prices of collars they bought for Sofie, their Australian Shepherd. As a paratrooper in the fabled 82nd Airborne Division, Temoc was intimately familiar with (and dependent on) the rugged functionality of his military gear. At their kitchen table, he and Erica began making collars using the same materials found on Temoc’s parachute equipment. Eventually, they developed a tactical style collar that was comfortable for Sofie and rugged enough to withstand her exuberant activities. 36
November-December 2018
Friends saw Sofie’s new collars and asked if their dogs could have one, too. Word spread and four years ago Desert K-9™ was founded to meet the growing demand, including orders from law enforcement agencies around the U.S. and Europe. Temoc and Erica outgrew the kitchen table, but continue to make each of their unique products by hand. Desert K-9™ has expanded its offerings to include unique leashes, harnesses, several types and styles of collars, shemagh-style doggie bandanas, and exclusive PVC patches. One of the most popular new lines is the Desert K-9™ exclusive Tactical Battle Pink™ collars and accessories. “Battle Pink” may seem like an oxymoron but it’s entirely fitting since Desert K-9™ donates 20 percent of each sale of Battle Pink™ products during breast cancer awareness month to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for the fight against breast cancer. One of the features that customers like best is the ability to personalize the Desert K-9™ collars and harnesses with military-style custom name tapes and a wide selection of patches, flags and messages. Before Fido’s next mission to the dog park, outfit him for the expedition with tough, washable, comfortable and stylish Desert K-9™ gear. Check them out at DesertK-9.com. You’ll soon be enlisted in their growing army of fans. @desertK9collars

Harbor Hound Co. Nautical, Salty Style for Fashionable Hounds
H
arbor Hound Co. is an independently owned small business created in late 2015 in Denver, Colorado, with the goal of providing high quality, handcrafted dog gear while giving back to the community. A year ago, our family moved to Florida’s beautiful Space Coast and we now reside in sunny Satellite Beach where we enjoy creating unique, fashionable dog accessories made for beach living. We never dreamed we would be where we are today, thanks to our wonderful customers. What started as a hobby, making my rescue dog her own rope collars and leashes, has taken off into a complete online shop where customers can fully customize their own collars and leashes to fit their personality and lifestyle. We offer two main collections of accessories. The first, and the reason for Harbor Hound Co.’s existence, is our Rope Collection. We use old fashioned sailor’s methods to hand splice three-strand rope and finish each leash and collar with durable whipping twine to secure all rope ends. Our rope and twine comes in an array of colors, making combinations endless and fun. These leashes and collars are extremely soft and comfortable for most dogs to wear. It’s a nautical, salty style for fashionable hounds. Our second collection of leashes and collars is our Water Dog – Summit & Sea Collection. These leashes and collars are made to resemble leather accessories but the webbing is leather-free, waterproof, mildew and mold resistant, abrasion and crack resistant and cleans easily with soap and water. Have a sea dog that loves to spend time with you at the beach? This is the collar and leash you need! With its non-porous coating, a quick rinse after playing and you no longer have a soggy sandy leash to take back home. The entire collection is made with corrosion resistant hardware to ensure that your collar or leash does not rust with use in salt water—every dog-loving Floridian’s dream! The Summit & Sea collection is ready for anything with its waterproof webbing, durable hardware, and smart style for your beloved pooch. Each collar and leash from Harbor Hound Co. is handcrafted in our home studio and five percent of each sale is donated to non-profit rescues to help sustain the safe harbors for homeless pets. We look forward to seeing you and your pups sporting Harbor Hound gear and enjoying the sun and surf! Learn more at HarborHoundCo.com. @harborhoundco

Surfing Santas Make Waves in Cocoa Beach
I
you’re looking for a festive way to get into the holiday spirit, head to the 9th annual Cocoa Beach Surfing Santa event on December 24. The family-oriented, free affair features volunteers paddling into the Atlantic in a variety of creative Santa-themed costumes. Last year’s event attracted more than 800 Surfing Santas and thousands of spectators festively dressed in creative holiday attire. The event began in 2009 when a local man dressed up as Santa and his family members dressed as elves and they paddled out on Christmas Eve morning. The local newspaper published a photo of the trio and the photo went viral. Every year since then, the event has grown and is now considered a holiday tradition. Richard Bradley, a long-time Cocoa Beach resident, has participated in the event since its early years. “It’s an incredible community event that brings a tremendous amount of joy,” Bradley said. “It’s really fun and it brings together a wide variety of people who love the beach and who want to celebrate the holidays. It definitely makes you feel like you’re involved in something much bigger than yourself.” The event begins at 8 a.m. on the beach in front of “Coconuts on the Beach,” at 2 Minuteman Causeway. A family oriented-costume contest begins at 8:30 a.m. with costume themes including: Santa and Mrs. Claus, snowman, gingerbread man, reindeer and elves. Participation categories are Babies (0-3 years), Kids (4-15 years), Group (2+ people), Men (16+ years), and Women (16+ years). The Surfing Santas paddle is at 10 a.m., and live musical entertainment begins at 11 a.m. Surfing Santa T-shirts will be sold, with proceeds supporting “The Florida Surf Museum” and “Grind for Life,” which helps fund transportation costs for cancer patients commuting to and from treatment. More than 1,400 t-shirts were sold at last year’s event. To pre-order a “Surfing Santa” rashguard, visit RashieCompany.com/Surfing-Santas. onnecting you to our coastal environment is our number one goal at Coastal Connections, Inc. When you connect with us, you’ll get your toes sandy while learning about sea turtles and participating in beach cleanups. We believe you should have the chance to help protect our environment by filling your tummy with delicious fish. And of course, we always want to make sure you feel more knowledgeable and empowered when you leave one of our events, than when you arrived. Coastal Connections is a 501 c 3 organization, formed in 2017, with a passion for protecting our coast and all the wonderful things that use it. Within our first year, we have successfully grown the locally famous Sebastian Lionfish Fest, added a new Adopt A Sea Turtle Nest program, initiated a plastic reduction effort and partnered with Sea Turtle Real Estate to open a boutique storefront on Ocean Drive. Thanks to countless people in the community, we’ve raised approximately $10,000 to fund these programs in the upcoming year, but our organization has big dreams and the passion to power bigger and better programs. In 2019, we are striving to do even more amazing things for our local community and coastline. We plan to expand our plastic reduction efforts by growing the “Buy a Bottle, Give a Bottle” program with more outdoor youth organizations, as well as grow our reusable bag program. We would also like to begin installing water bottle filling stations around Vero Beach, beginning

WASHED ASHORE Seek to Sea More
Do you ever wonder about the story behind abandoned boats and rafts that end up on our beaches? As I walked the beach, this deserted vessel lay buried in the sand. Where did it come from, who was aboard? Did a storm capsize it or was it seeking our shores? What was its story? Having walked miles and miles of seashore, there have been many things washed ashore. Families so desperate to escape a life, fisherman caught in storms, these salty tales are endless.

Love Your Lagoon
B
y now, hopefully the red tide has dissipated and the water is back to normal. The reef fish off the beaches took a pretty hard hit, but I believe they will bounce back quickly. This is a reminder that everyone can do their part in helping to keep our waters clean by preventing runoff and pesticides from feeding this toxic event. Fall looks to be right on time after a brutal summer that was probably the warmest I can remember in my 35 years of living on the Treasure Coast. The annual pompano run will begin soon on the beaches along with Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and big jacks. In the river, look for fish to be leaving their shady summer homes in order to warm themselves as the water temperatures begin to drop. Snook, redfish, and still some tarpon will be the prime fish to target on the flats and spoil islands. In recent reports on the health of the lagoon, the seagrass seems to be coming back at a good rate. Be sure to stay in the channels and avoid prop scarring the shallow areas where the grass is growing because it takes a long time to regenerate. 48

Celebrate
This season reminds me of how cozy cool weather and white winters can be. Why not bring that feeling to Florida by hosting a party featuring white? Throwing parties is one of my favorite things to do. I love watching friends and family come together, relax and have a fabulous time, all in a beautiful setting. Here are some of the details of our white-themed party. We hope to inspire you to host your own gathering to celebrate the many beauties of the season! The invitation read, “Strictly white attire. The sun was setting over the water as our guests arrived, all decked in white. The outdoor fire and cafe lights lit up the cozy sitting areas where guests could enjoy conversing and relaxing. Valia Franceschi with Eventologie brought a fresh new vibe to our modern home. Just what we were looking for to bring a cool yet cozy feel to our outdoor event. Valia thought of everything to make the large outdoor area feel inviting and just the right fit for the number of guests expected.

Beautiful lanterns were placed throughout, creating warmth and elegance. Valia’s team worked quickly and efficiently. Their large selection of furniture, structures, lights, pillows, etc. made it all look like we had our own outdoor decorator! We picked coconuts from our palm trees and loaded a cart full of fresh pineapples and spray painted them white. Baskets filled with white coconuts and pineapples looked like a tropical freeze! Jenny with Vero Beach Florist created beautiful arrangements that were airy, modern and tropical using a combination of banana leaves from our own garden and a number of specialty greens from her shop. Music sets the vibe for any gathering. We love to dance and enjoy sounds from around the world. Finding the right DJ was paramount. Brandon with 14th Avenue DJ did an incredible job of making the party feel like we stepped into a swanky club, playing anything from Latin beats to West African acoustic sounds. He kept it chill in the beginning, then led most everyone to the dance floor using all kinds of familiar favorites. Oh, the food! Our guests were wowed by the tastes of mushroom tartlets, lamb kebobs with tzatziki sauce, delicately rolled vegetable rolls that looked and tasted like we were being served by a 5-star restaurant. Jesse Alexander with Orchid Gourmet definitely brought the ‘gourmet,’ while his incredible staff made our guests feel well cared for. Their work in our kitchen was an event in itself. It was a treat to witness their efficient fluidity of bringing hors d’oeuvres after hors-d’oeuvres. The drink! It was important for us to offer a variety of drinks as some enjoy a glass of wine, while others prefer something non-alcoholic. Whatever the preference, we wanted our guests to have a variety of yummy, interesting choices. Sayre Schwiering, with Market, a new downtown business, was not only incredible to work with, but she helped find the perfect selection of wines, featuring whites, sparkling and refreshing rosé. Jesse with Orchid Gourmet helped create a specialty cocktail and also found a new non-alcoholic drink called Apple Rush, a refreshing sparkling fruit drink. With all the wonderful selections of wines and sparkling drinks, we knew some guests just might prefer a brew. It was super easy to reserve a Slim Keg from Walking Tree Brewery. Their Straw Hat Pale Ale was a party favorite. A friend of mine said regarding hosting parties, “As long as there is good food, plenty to drink and great music, you have a fun party.” Whether you love large parties or intimate gatherings, we hope you take time during this beautiful season to celebrate and gather with those you love! 52

• Think through what kind of party you’d like: simple sit-down dinner or cocktail and hors d’ oeuvres soiree. Then, spice things up by making it a themed party.
GREAT GIFT!
• Decide how many guests to invite. Small and intimate can be just as much fun, if not more, than a large crowd. • Set the date, time and place and then send an invite. Creating an invitation online can be efficient and elegant; sending by text or email can save money and time. • Plan the setting. Decide if your party will be outdoor or indoor, a sit-down dinner or informal cocktail soiree. Ambience is everything! • Great tasting food always makes a party. You can keep things yummy and simple by being creative with the layout. Try an elegant “grazing table” and stick to tasty basics!

FAMILY MATTERS
DNA Test Reveals Unexpected Results
W
ith the holidays around the corner, we begin to plan family gatherings to share in the joy of the season. Loved ones invited to our table are often a mix of relatives and friends. For many, family extends beyond the double helix strands of matching DNA. We assemble our family of choice composed of those who have been part of our lives in meaningful ways and whose stories are interwoven in our history. Recently, the notion of family of choice acquired greater significance in my life due to a surprising revelation from 23andMeTM, a popular DNA test that provides a seemingly benign way to explore your ancestral makeup. Simply send in your saliva and in about two weeks, you’ll know your composition like that of a fine wine. However, 23andMeTM can lead to some shocking discoveries that may turn your world upside down. Just when I thought those stories were reserved for a Dr. Phil episode, that illusion became my reality. Growing up as an adopted child, I often wondered about my biological parents. Through extensive searches conducted years ago, I discovered my biological mother and father. My father died young, but I found his children and gained two half-brothers and a half-sister who welcomed me with open arms. We felt an instant connection and have bonded as family ever since. We’ve discussed our ancestry as there was rumor our father’s grandmother was Native American. To satisfy this curiosity, I tested with 23andMeTM and to my surprise, my genealogy revealed that I am almost one quarter Japanese.
WINTER SPECIAL Friends had often speculated that I had some Asian features and turns out they were right. However, to my knowledge, neither of my biological parents was of Japanese descent. Armed with my test results, I contacted my biological mother and inquired if it was possible that she made a mistake in naming my father. She said she had never considered that possibility, but there was a one night stand around the same time she resumed a relationship with the man whom she believed to be my father. Sure enough, my DNA proved that her one night encounter is indeed the man responsible for one of my x chromosomes and my Japanese ancestry. This unveiling brought forth both the excitement of new possibilities and the fear that I would lose the paternal family I had created. The unexpected realization that the brothers and sister I’ve come to know are not true blood relatives felt like such a threat to our kinship. But, instead of giving me up, they’ve promised to keep me and it feels like being adopted all over again. Now, we become family of choice and DNA doesn’t define our relationship. Ultimately, family is what we make it, and the greatest blessing is being together with the ones we love.

Three Easy Ways to Transform Your Smile Before the Holidays What are the most common concerns patients have with their smile? A: The number one concern we see with our patients is the color of their teeth. Instead of having a bright white smile, as we age our teeth tend to discolor with yellows and grays. Also, patients are often frustrated with the shape and length of their front teeth. Who doesn’t like a fuller and wider smile? Finally, people tend to be unhappy with misaligned or crooked teeth. So, what are the three easiest ways for someone to improve their smile? A: First off, call our dentist right away to schedule a consultation to discuss your concerns. Let’s break 60
November-December 2018
down the common ways smiles are transformed, starting with the most simple: • In-Office Teeth Whitening - This procedure became widely popular due to Zoom Whitening. Often taking approximately 90 minutes, a professional strength whitening gel is applied to the teeth. A blue light is activated, which further enhances the immediate results most patients desire. During the session, a mold is taken of the patient’s teeth so custom trays are made to keep that smile bright and white. Most people can expect results to last typically 8-10 months depending on lifestyle.
to make the final outcome even better. This simple option can significantly improve someone’s smile. • Cosmetic Veneers - The best of the two previous treatments combined into one! This method can significantly improve tooth color and crooked teeth at the same time. We often tell patients to think of cosmetic veneers like a “contact lens” for your teeth. A veneer is a porcelain lens that bonds to the front of your tooth. Often, they’re only as thick as your fingernail! While this option may be the most time consuming, results can easily last 15-20 years, depending on the patient. Learn more at VeroImplantDentistry.com.
• Cosmetic Bonding and Contouring - Best suited for minor improvements, this treatment involves placing and bonding tooth colored resins. If teeth need to be lengthened, this is a fantastic option. Often the dentist may contour the adjacent teeth Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

s the weather cools down and comfy sweaters become an everyday uniform, there’s nothing more appealing than warming up with a latte in hand. These five Florida coffee shops are worth visiting not only because of their quality cup of joe, but also because each one has an intimate, welcoming ambience. They are the type of place that you know you could spend hours in as soon as you open the door. So, grab a good book and enjoy them. Caffeine Roasters, Tampa Caffeine Roasters began with their quaint downtown location. It’s a neat coffee shop with exposed brick, subway tile and a brown leather couch. They created a second location which keeps the same vibe, but on a much larger scale. Freddy Peña, who graduated from The Art Institute of New York City’s culinary program, heads their kitchen and created a lovely menu of pastries as well as breakfast and lunch items. Signature drinks include a ginger spiced latte and an orange infused cold brew.

Meet Patrick Baker of Chelsea’s Gourmet
P
atrick Baker joined the team at Chelsea’s Gourmet a few months ago, but he grew up here and attended St. Edwards and Vero Beach High School, so he’s no stranger to the Vero Beach community. In 2013, Patrick moved to Denver, Colorado, where he worked at one of the top restaurants in the city. He was mentored by chefs who came from the kitchens of Wolfgang Puck and Thomas Keller. In 2017, Patrick and his wife, Sarah, left Denver to spend 10 months in Europe, where Patrick studied cuisine and culinary techniques in nine countries. We sat down with Patrick to learn more about his experience and return to Florida.
Q: What made you decide to return to Vero Beach? PB: First and foremost, I returned for the opportunity to partner with one of my lifelong best friends, Christian Bordoli. I was in the early stages of starting a restaurant in St. Augustine when Christian sparked the idea of working together. Sarah and I have always loved Vero Beach, and the timing was right to bring everything I’ve learned and experienced back to my hometown. Q: How does your time abroad influence the food at Chelsea’s? PB: Going abroad took my perspective on cooking to an entirely different place. It’s all about simplicity and elegance. Whether it was a Michelin restaurant or a Mom-and-Pop place in the middle of nowhere Croatia, it all comes back to making things look beautiful and highlighting local ingredients. Technically, our new menus show a little bit from everywhere we went; new sauces, spices and new takes on old classics. Q: What is the vision for Chelsea’s moving forward? PB: We want to reinvigorate an institution. We grew up here and Chelsea’s has been around since before I came around, but we also know Vero is ready for more. As we move into season, we’ll be doing more chef ’s table dinners, which will be 10+ course experience, wine-paring dinners and local farm dinners. We’re going to keep building on the momentum we’ve started with the new happy hour and brunch and keep the sense of community top of mind through partnerships with local farmers, purveyors, charities and events.

Taking Action and Spreading Kindness
T
he Live Like Cole Foundation was established in honor of my brother, Cole Coppola, who was killed by a drunk driver on September 27, 2014. Cole was my best friend; only a year apart in age, we did everything together. Because of someone’s poor choice, our family is one person less. My family and I started the foundation in order to raise awareness, while also giving back to the community who showed so much support after Cole’s passing. We’ve given more than $50,000 in local scholarships and I have spoken at schools about making good decisions. Our motto, which is the way Cole lived his life, is “Taking Action and Spreading Kindness.” Because Cole was an avid fisherman, one of our first initiatives was The Cole Coppola Memorial Fishing Pier, which is now open in Riverside Park. This is a safe place for children and adults alike to go fish, relax, or just enjoy the wildlife and scenery. In addition to the fishing pier, we are currently in the process of helping pay for half of the repairs of the dock at the fountains in Royal Palm Pointe. If love could sustain life, Cole would have lived forever. Cole never held grudges or ill will, he was a peacemaker with a gentle soul and heart of gold. This September marked four years since my best friend and brother passed, but because of the great community we live in, he has not been forgotten. On November 10, Dillard’s of Vero Beach is hosting “Live Like Cole Day.” Every department will raffle off a gift basket valued at least $1,000, and anyone can enter to win by making a donation to the foundation. Proceeds from this event will be generously given to The Live Like Cole Foundation. This event initially started at Dillard’s, but then grew to a city-wide event, involving more businesses. We would like to give a special thank you to Lisa Huddy of Dillard’s, and all involved in putting on this special day.

Holidays for
HEROES P
auline Adams is a woman on a mission— a military mission. Her dream is to ensure U.S. troops deployed around the world have a holiday to remember. That’s why she teamed up with the Military Moms Prayer Group, a local nonprofit organization that supports the troops through prayer and annual gift-box drives for Christmas and Hanukkah. Through the group’s Holidays for Heroes program, an estimated 20,000 gift boxes have been shipped to U.S. servicemen and women since 2006 from residents of Indian River and beyond. This year, the group expects 2,500 gift boxes to reach our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen. For the last seven years, Pauline, owner of I’ll Never Tell jewelry, 3351 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach, has raised more than $48,000 for the Military Moms Prayer Group, largely through the sale of heart-shaped “Braveheart Pins.” The pins are encrusted with red-white-and-blue crystal, double as a pendant and sell for $12. She also offers patriotic ornaments decorated with flags, Swarovski crystal, and inspiring messages of faith and patriotism for $25 each. All proceeds benefit the work of the prayer group. “We’re not going to forget our fighting men and women,” says Pauline, the wife of a Vietnam veteran and mother of two sons who served in the Navy and Marines. “Ultimately, we each know in our hearts that we continue to have our freedom because of the sacrifices of our sons and daughters in uniform. We can’t support them without the support of the community.” Pauline will man a Military Moms booth at the National Navy UDT-Seal Museum’s annual muster Saturday, November 3. She invites local citizens to visit the booth or drop by her store for a Holidays for Heroes “mailing kit,” which includes a flat-rate USPS box, a list of items troops want most, a Psalm 91 card, and a “how-to” guide for shipping. “I’ve found that people care deeply and are looking for ways to reach out to the troops,” says Pauline. “Sending a package overseas or purchasing an ornament or ‘Braveheart Pin’ are simple ways to say thank you to our courageous servicemen and women—the true ‘brave hearts’ who keep our country safe.” For more information, call (772) 231-1148, contact the Military Moms Prayer Group, (772) 473-0288, or visit MilitaryMomsPrayerGroup.com. The interdenominational group meets from 5-6pm on Thursdays at Christ Church Vero Beach, 667 20th Street, near Miracle Mile. New members are always welcome.

or the last 24 years, the Vero Beach Recreation Department has dazzled the local stage with its annual Holiday Drama. Each year, with more than 200 participants, a holiday story is told through music, gymnastics and aerial antics. Set amongst a festive backdrop and bright stage lights, tiny three-year-olds adorned in sparkles eagerly trot on stage. Within seconds the audience is smiling with tears of joy as the tots twirl and shake and wiggle to holiday tunes. Next, young teens inspire as they tumble and flip across the stage. Perhaps most impressive are the intricate routines executed by the selective groups known as Little Stars, Junior Entertainers, Spotlights, Performing Arts Troupe and Performing Arts Company. Ranging in ages from six up to 22, these groups anchor the show with highly entertaining and daring acts. What once began as a recital decades ago has morphed into a full-blown spectacle a’ la Cirque du Soliel. Titled the “Christmas Road Trip,” the show begins in Tinsel Town, Florida and follows the adventures of three sisters traveling to visit their grandmother. Behind the curtains and beyond the sequin costumes, the real elves are the individuals who genuinely love coaching and mentoring the young performers. From the choreography to writing the script, to building the props and painting the backdrop, the team of Patty Howard, Deja Miller, Julie Norman, Liz Matthews and Angie Holshouser work all year round to make this event a success. “The annual holiday production provides children with their ‘moment in the spotlight’ in front of family and friends. It’s magical for every child,” says Angie, the recreation supervisor. The talent levels of performers range from beginner to advanced. All students enjoy a mixture of non-competitive physical fitness and a lifelong dose of self-confidence in a creative and safe environment. Angie has witnessed many students benefit from the program. “To watch them feel accomplished and grow as people is something that is irreplaceable to me,” Angie says. “That is the greatest part of my job and why I’ve been doing it for more than 20 years.” During this time of year, adults around the world try to teach children that the ‘Christmas Spirit’ is a gift or feeling that comes from within. In many ways, the rec department embraces this same concept with their programs. “It goes to the very heart of our mission. Because this is more than gymnastics or dance, it’s a family. It brings the power of positivity, thoughts of joy, triumph and delight to all.”

“G
irl power!” cheers Olivia Holmes, COO and co-owner. Beachside Rehab and Beachside Detox are owned and operated by a team of passionate women who are a powerful force fighting the negative stigma of mental health and addiction treatment. “Having mental health and substance abuse issues are hard enough; clients should not have to be ashamed of needing treatment,” says Tabitha Grant, Beachside’s clinical director and licensed marriage and family therapist. “Actually, coming to treatment is one of the most courageous acts someone can do. It takes real strength.” Beachside Rehab was established on Hutchinson Island five years ago. CEO and Co-Owner, Imelda Wellington shares, “Addiction is a disease that invades the body, mind and spirit not just of the person seeking treatment, but of the entire family. It takes a team to combat this disease and I am proud to stand alongside these professional, talented and passionate women who help make Beachside Rehab the special treatment center it is today.” This team of women, along with the entire Beachside team, have been so successful in helping people get treatment and recover that they have opened an additional facility. “Recently, we expanded our services to include medical detoxification and residential treatment,” Olivia says. “We are now able to help clients through every step of the recovery journey and have found that the continuum of care has vastly improved our client’s experience at Beachside Rehab and Beachside Detox.” Fighting the grips of addiction, the stigma surrounding Florida rehab centers, and helping families recover together, all the while providing excellent clinical treatment to clients is no easy task. “This is life and death we’re dealing with,” Tabitha emphasizes. “Somebody must take over the fight for the addicted and their families. That someone is us.” The entire Beachside team is comprised of compassionate clinical, medical, and professional staff who provide holistic treatment in the serene setting of St. Lucie’s beaches and waterways. “Too many families are left behind to suffer when addiction is allowed to win,” Imelda adds. “Witnessing this great sadness strengthens our resolve to heal the whole person, the whole family and help clients gain a better understanding of who they are. We do it in a very dignified atmosphere, so clients can realize how deserving and special they are.” The Director of Nursing, Emmanuella Lavalliere sums it up: “I believe it’s the perfect time to make history. We’re breaking barriers and female leadership is incredibly important to society. We’re empowered women and we believe we can and will transform the world, one client at a time.” Girl power indeed! The Ultimate Organizing Calendar
S
ince 2008, “Pocket The Date,” a spiral bound calendar with pockets, has kept people in the know organized and ready for every occasion. Created by Vero Beach resident Lyn Kennedy, these one-of-a-kind calendars are now popular across the nation. New this year, Lyn has introduced a “mini” version for easy carrying, everywhere you go. A former teacher, Lyn loves being organized more than just about anything. Her original handmade calendar was wildly popular with friends and people she met around town. She carried it with her everywhere she went, including the post office or the grocery store. Enclosed in a binder with pockets stapled to pages in which she stored social invitations, bills, reminders and important notes, her calendar soon grew by word of mouth. Lyn drew a graph outline of each month drawn above each pocket (one per two-sided page) with enough space to write down important events. After handmaking several at Staples for a few friends, she decided it was time to look into professionally producing them and thus, Pocket The Date was born. The original 10” x 11” calendar comes complete with a color coordinated band to keep papers in place, easily storing items you need to reach quickly. The mini calendar measures 6” x 6” and easily fits in a tote bag, large handbag or your car, and is ideal for your dresser or desk at home. Complete with pockets and designed to mimic the original, you can take it just about anywhere. Professionals, brides, students and mothers across the country attest to this being one calendar that has simplified many lives.

n today’s digital world, the public is constantly bombarded with thousands of visual images, all clamoring for attention. It’s easy to make people feel over saturated and over stimulated. This competitive environment makes it challenging for even the most business-savvy individual or organization to stand out. That’s where the vision, skill and talents of Charlotte Tripson, of Charlotte Anabar Designs of Vero Beach, come to life. Charlotte is a self-taught artist who sees the world in a visual way. When you couple her artistic sensibilities with her Bachelor’s degree in Digital Media, you have a tech-savvy professional who is gifted at helping others find their visual identity and voice. Combine that with her deep Indian River County roots that run generations, Charlotte has an authentic and abiding love for the Treasure Coast which is apparent in her designs. Over the years, she has guided many local business owners, political candidates, not-for-profit organizations and others through the creative process of turning their thoughts and dreams into concrete images and words. Once their brand identity is created, Charlotte helps clients communicate to their audience in an impactful and meaningful way through logo designs, websites, advertising materials and social media marketing. Beth Sembler, of Victoria-William Company, hired Charlotte to help her create a brand identity and logo for her family’s vacation cottages located in Sebastian’s working waterfront district. “Charlotte took my thoughts, ideas and ramblings and turned them into a tangible logo that clearly communicates the ‘old Florida’ feeling we were seeking. She nailed it,” Sembler said. “She’s an invaluable resource and she makes the creative process fun.” Her phone blitzes with notifications, emails, texts and requests next to her all day as she moves about her day collaborating and creating with her clients. Charlotte takes her business very personally and often times this creates a special bond between her and her clients, turning business relationships into meaningful friendships. “Owning a business or running for office is a labor of love, and when people share their vision you get to know them at a personal level because they trust you to represent them and over time you develop a short hand and an intimate way of communicating,” she said. “It’s gratifying to help people turn their vision and passion into reality. I’m really fortunate to be able to do this for a living.”

ur dogs are important members of our families, so it only seems fitting that we bring them along on our travels and adventures. While many destinations are becoming increasingly dog-friendly to accommodate our four-legged companions, some are lagging behind in the trend. It’s important to be prepared so you don’t end up in a ‘No Dogs Allowed’ situation. Here are some tips and resources to make your next vacation fabulous for both you and your furry friends.
Camping Camping with your dog is a great way for you both to enjoy the great outdoors. Campgrounds are popular amongst the dog-loving crowd as most allow our four-legged companions as long as they are on-leash. Be sure to check the individual campground’s pet policy before reserving a site.
At Peña’s Custom Cabinets, LLC, we can build your dream furniture and cabinetry with the highest quality craftsmanship and fine domestic wood. No job is too big or too small…it will still be Built To Last Generations!
National Parks Written by KELLY BRUCE BEARD
Most U.S. national parks allow dogs in campgrounds and along roadside turnouts, however, our canine companions are not allowed on trails. While this is a disappointment, know that this rule is in place to protect these public lands and the animals that inhabit them. State parks and Canadian national parks are much more dog-friendly. Always do your research before visiting any park to ensure an enjoyable experience for all.

Many hotels are pet-friendly, although some charge a fee or refundable deposit. Hotel chains known for their inclusive pet policies are Best Western, Fairmont, Four Seasons, Kimpton, La Quinta, Loews, and Westin. Call ahead and announce your desire to bring your pet when making a reservation. Size restrictions often apply.
Restaurants Many restaurants with outdoor seating will allow your pup to join you at your table, but some require your dog be leashed outside the patio gates. Some will even let you bring your dog indoors! Call ahead to ensure your furry friend isn’t left out in the cold—or heat!

Some great websites to help you plan your next getaway include BringFido.com, GoPetFriendly.com, PetsWelcome.com, and TripsWithPets.com. Help Fido burn off some energy while you travel—download the Dog Park Finder app to find the nearest off-leash park to your destination. Before traveling, be sure your pups are up-to-date on all their vaccinations, are microchipped and wearing an ID tag. Bring an ample supply of food, water and medications, if applicable. Above all else, be a good steward. Keep your dog under control on a 6-foot leash at all times and always pick up after them. It’s up to us to demonstrate that our pups are good citizens so our furry friends don’t wear out their welcome. Follow Kelly’s adventures on @RivetedRoost and her pups @TheHuckleberryHounds.

LIFE
WELL LOVED
“It is an illusion that photos are made with the camera…they are made with the eye, heart and head.” ~ Henri Cartier-Bresson
C
Cartier-Bresson, the famous French photographer, invented the concept of the ‘decisive moment.’ He believed in seizing a spontaneous event and that the resulting image represented the essence of the event itself. One South Florida photographer has spent the last decade capturing the essence of brides, one wedding at a time. Vera Franceschi’s journey with photography began in Spain. At the time, she was studying to become an architect when she decided to take some photography classes on the side. Quickly she realized that what she considered to be a hobby was actually her passion. “I have always been fascinated by photography. I can’t imagine being anything else.” Ten years into her dream profession, this Venezuelan-born entrepreneur now travels the globe as a wedding photographer. Her unique style lends itself to never approaching any two weddings the same. “I sit with each of my brides and really seek out what it is she wants on her wedding day. Is she a romantic who prefers natural lighting? Maybe she is shy and needs more guidance with posing? Or does she have a big personality and enjoy the spotlight? Each one is different and I try to highlight every bride in the best light.” Vera breaks the wedding day down into three phases and elects different techniques for each aspect. For example, while the bride is getting ready, Vera takes an editorial approach with her work. At the ceremony, she adopts a photojournalistic style to capture her photos. And by the time the bride and groom have reached the reception? “That is my favorite. I love it because now it is time for the couple to relax and enjoy,” Vera explains. “I always say, ‘Do what you want!’ because this is where I can really capture the moment.” Brides have been so receptive to her work that she now books out six months to one year in advance. She has shot weddings in Colombia, Peru and the Dominican Republic to name a few. For three consecutive years, her work has been recognized at the Wedding and Portrait Photographers Awards at the International Wedding Conference. Vera has the eye to capture the right shot, handles her brides with her heart and uses her head to photograph in the appropriate style. It all adds up to nailing that ‘decisive moment.’

DOG’S LIFE
COMPASSIONATE VETERINARY SERVICES FEATURING:
Dog-Safe Greenery
Whether planning a garden or bringing a little outdoors in, knowing the difference between safe and toxic plants is crucial to the health of your dog. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t able to distinguish between what’s good and what’s bad. That’s why you must take care to plan to have only those plants, herbs and flowers that aren’t harmful rather than picking ones just because they’re pretty.
Common Plants That Are Toxic to Dogs
Safe Plants for Dogs
Plant toxicity can exist in some unexpected places. While far from exhaustive, here are a few of the plants and flowers you may already have in your garden that should be kept away from your dog.
Thankfully, there are many types of greenery that are both beautiful and safe for your dog. Here is just a sampling of the kinds of plants you can use in your landscaping or interior decor without worrying about possible risk to your fur baby.
Azalea - Azaleas, also known as rhododendrons or rosebays, contain grayantoxinare. This toxin is risky for dogs and it doesn’t take much to get them sick. Not only can eating a small leaf cause vomiting, diarrhea and drooling, but it can also lead to cardiac distress.
African Violet - A compact, purple flower commonly placed on windowsills, pet owners can rest assured their dog is safe even if Fido decides to put a little bit of this plant in his mouth.
Crocus - There are two types of crocus flowers: the Autumn Crocus and the Spring
look to dieffenbachia, without the toxicity. This greenery is safe for your canine and feline family members alike.
Crocus. Both can cause vomiting and diarrhea. However, the Autumn Crocus is particularly dangerous, since it contains colchicine. This toxin can cause internal bleeding and damage to the liver and kidneys, and brings a risk of respiratory failure.
Cyclamen - Cyclamen contains substances called terpenoid saponins. These toxins also
Aluminum Plant - Also known as a watermelon plant, the aluminum plant has a similar
Dieffenbachia - A deep green and tropical plant, dieffenbachia can cause your dog oral distress. The plant’s toxic elements burn the mouth and may lead to drooling, vomiting and trouble swallowing.
Burdock Herb - Burdock is a traditional medicinal plant used worldwide. Many dog owners believe it supports a dog’s health. If you choose to plant burdock, a rich soil works best. Prune regularly to keep it at a reasonable size.
Daffodil - A common sight with the changing seasons, daffodils have alkaloids that cause vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions and tremors. Although the entire plant is potentially toxic for your dog, daffodil bulbs are a particular hazard.
Peppermint - Generally safe for dogs, some canines actually like to chew the leaves of the peppermint plant to aid digestion. It can also help freshen breath.
depression and gastrointestinal upset. Stay away from lilies of the valley, peace lilies, calla lilies and amaryllis for the welfare of your pooch.
Oleander - A common plant in warm climates, oleander is yet another beautiful flower that contains cardiac glycoside toxins. In addition to nausea, vomiting, seizure and tremors, oleander can lead to abnormal heart rate and cardiac arrhythmias in canines.

Astragalus - Harvested from mature plants in traditional medicine, astragalus may help
cause gastrointestinal distress in dogs, but ingesting a large amount can result in heart abnormalities, seizures or death.
Kalanchoe - When swallowed, kalanchoe can cause typical symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities. In addition, because this plant contains cardiac glycosides, ingestion may lead to death.

bamboo or sacred bamboo. These are decorative species that may be toxic.
Rosemary - Rosemary is ideal for the indoor gardener, as long as it is trimmed regularly. One of the hardiest of the perennials, it will keep providing you with savory flavor through the winter months. Best of all, rosemary is non-toxic for your dog.

Sage - Another addition to the herb garden, sage should not cause any problems for your dog. The plant and its leaves are non-toxic to canines. Spider Plant - A spider plant is not toxic for your dog, but if you come home to find it overturned and your pooch with some stomach queasiness, he may have just overindulged.
Sunflower - Nothing says summer like a sunflower, and your dog will welcome these plants as well. They won’t cause him any distress, even if he goes in for a bite.
Peony - It is the paeonol toxin in the peony bark that may cause vomiting and diarrhea in your pooch. Thankfully, this usually only causes mild distress, but it’s best kept away from any dog.
Periwinkle - This star-shaped flower contains toxic alkaloids, such as yohimbine, vincristine and vinblastine, which may lead to vomiting, diarrhea, depression, seizures and tremors. While most reactions are mild, periwinkle is highly dangerous for your dog if he eats too much.

It can be scary to think of your beloved family member in medical distress because he ingested something he shouldn’t. The good news is that with quick intervention you can help your canine to stay well. If you suspect that your dog has gotten into a toxic plant, call the Pet Poison Helpline and seek medical care at your local veterinarian. Bring a photo or sample of the plant if you can’t identify it, and remember to stay calm and focused on your dog’s well-being. Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

T
he holidays are approaching and should be a time for joy and good cheer. To ensure you and your pet experience the holidays on a positive note, here are some suggestions for keeping Fifi and Fido happy, healthy and safe. Socialization skills should be reinforced as the holidays near so your pet is well mannered and polite around family and friends as well as other dogs. The holidays are so nice when everyone gets along! Up-to-date vaccines and current ID tags are essential as local events are hosted and we mix and mingle. Exposure to people and other dogs at this busy time of year increases, making these two items very important. Prepare a list of important and emergency contacts. Post the information in a conspicuous place in your home, such as the refrigerator door, keeping a copy in your car as well. Include your pet in special activities, but also have a quiet place set aside where they will feel safe, should they become overwhelmed. Be aware of how your pet responds to loud noises such as music, boisterous voices and even fireworks as these can all be stressful. Be sure to keep your pet away from table food and leftovers as a rule, but especially during the holidays. So many of the foods we prepare this time of year are rich and laden with spices, sugar and fats. Chocolate, a holiday staple, is especially harmful to a dog’s digestive system as is alcohol, both of which can lead to severe upset stomach, digestive turmoil and even pancreatitis. The Christmas tree water can be harmful to your pet, particularly if preservatives are added. Items found on the tree can lead to a trip to your veterinarian, including tinsel, ornaments and ornament hooks. Watch for broken ornaments and lights which can be ingested or damage the paws and face. Strings of lights and extension cords hung throughout the house or in the yard can also be a danger, resulting in electrical shock or even singeing fur. Lastly, be aware of poisonous plants both inside and outside your home such as mistletoe, lilies and poinsettias, keep them out of reach so pets cannot ingest or even lick them. With care and a bit of thoughtful preparation, the holidays can be fun and enjoyable for you and for your pet.

The riskiest financial move is doing nothing.
A busy schedule shouldn’t get in the way of a plan for your future.
ould it surprise you to know that one of the most difficult things to discuss is money? Perhaps this is because money represents more than a topic—it can represent control, power, embarrassment, insecurity, fear. For some people, the hesitation stems from a natural reluctance to confront their own mortality or their potential for future disability. For others, avoiding the topic is caused by the perception that planning is associated with complicated—and expensive— legal and tax issues. Lost Opportunities - It’s never too early for your children to understand the value of creating a wealth plan that takes family members’ needs into account. Family members may not be aligned on priorities, such as long-term health care needs, charitable giving and generational gifting strategies, and taking the time to establish common goals is the first step in understanding how all members can participate in achieving them. Lack of communication can ultimately lead to misunderstandings and divergent objectives that could jeopardize your legacy and work against your values. Costly Procrastination - Perhaps the hardest of conversations to have as an adult is with your aging parents. This is where the danger of putting it off grows exponentially. If You Have a Summer Birthday, Please Read!
A
lmost every summer I get one or more calls from clients whose driver’s licenses have expired or will soon expire. This usually happens at a time when they will be or are out of the state. Of course, this means that they cannot drive at their summer address either. Suddenly they panic because they cannot get their car back to Florida. They are never willing to make a special trip down, by air, to renew their license. IF YOU ARE IN THIS SITUATION, WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you have a summer birthday, several suggestions come to mind. The first, and simplest, is to renew your license before you leave. But when you realize your dilemma, it may be too late for that option so you are stuck, or are you? If you have a Florida license with the star you can renew it online. You cannot drive until you receive your new license in the mail, so this may also be a problem. Or someone else may be able to drive you until you return and you can renew their license upon your return. Another little known fact is, if you catch it before your license expires, you can email or call Tallahassee and get a 90 day FREE extension. Then you can renew this upon your return. Visit the state website at www.flhsmv.gov. Their address is Bureau of Records, 2900 Apalachee Parkway, MS 92, Tallahassee, FL 32399-0575 and phone number is (850) 617-2000. This can be done fairly simply by contacting the state at any of the above and requesting a 90 day extension. To alleviate this concern completely, put a reminder on your calendar now.

BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.
WARNING FLAGS Water Closed to Public Agua Cerrada al Publico
REPORT VIOLATIONS OR INJURED WILDLIFE: If you discover injured wildlife or suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (888) 404-FWCC (3922). Cell phone users can dial *FWC or #FWC, depending on service provider. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming into their
territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.

Time for everyone to turn up the volume on fun! This will be a holiday season to remember. Several life affirming aspects especially around Christmas will help end 2018 on a good note. We all need to be more patient around November 16, as it is a tricky day for many of us. On December 7, Mercury goes direct so things should start to feel lighter for many of us. On New Year’s Eve, set your intentions for what you hope to manifest in 2019 and remember to be grateful for all the good things that happened in 2018. ARIES: Don’t be discouraged Aries. The last few months, you’ve been
spinning in circles, trying to get everything done. You’ve felt like you have too much to do in too little time. With the holidays arriving, it’s time to put your focus on what really matters: family and friends. You have a tendency to plow through life with a headstrong determination. This is all well and good when dealing with work, but now it’s time to slow down and just be present. Take advantage around November 11 to spend time with people you don’t get to see too often. Lay low around December 7 when Mars and Neptune collide. Christmas looks to be pretty spectacular so make the most of this holiday season.
TAURUS: Your sensitivity is heightened this November. You may feel as
if everything hits you harder than normal. This is especially true around November 11-16. Sometimes you wonder if everyone is just oblivious, as others seem to be able to brush things off much better than you do. Remember your sensitivity is your strength, so don’t apologize for being more intense than others. You may be called upon to help out friends in need around November 16. The full moon on November 22 is in Gemini, making you more of a social butterfly than you normally are. Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to be particularly pleasant as friends and family let you know how much you are appreciated and loved.
GEMINI: Being one of the Zodiac signs associated with the element of air,
you have a naturally graceful way about you. Your lighthearted manner will help soothe others, especially around November 16. When Mercury goes retrograde from November 17 through December 7, you might need to help people get the birds-eye view on a difficult situation that crops up. Make sure you take time for yourself as others’ difficulties are not for you to carry into your own life. December starts with some drama around December 6. Just know this too shall pass. The full moon on November 22 is in your sign, so soak up all that lunar power as you move into December. You will especially enjoy Christmas Eve, with the moon being in the entertaining sign of Leo.
CANCER: No other Zodiac sign loves home more than a Cancerian.
November and December are the most family-oriented months of the year and this year, the holidays have a different feel for you. This could be because life circumstances have changed or you have changed. Home no longer feels exactly like it did before, and this could either be a good thing or a difficult thing. The most important thing to realize is that the definition of family can change with time, and can include more than just blood relatives. The end of November into early December is an excellent time to expand your world. If you are invited to something you would normally never do, try being adventurous and say yes. On Christmas Day, the moon in in Leo, so remember this is a fire sign that loves drama. Good time to practice the choice to be happy with what is.
LEO: You have had quite a few shocking surprises the last few months,
and now it is time to hunker down for the winter. Allowing yourself to have soulful time when you can contemplate all you have been through would be very useful. If there are things you want to change in your life, start taking steps in that direction around November 5-8 when you have some lucky aspects coming your way. Write down your intentions for 2019, or perhaps create a visual board with photos of all the things you want to manifest. There is a lot of support coming your way in December to help you get where you want to go.
VIRGO: Virgos are not terribly fond of change, especially when it’s
sudden change. You’ve experienced a bunch of abrupt turns of events which have helped you break some long standing patterns of behavior. This hasn’t exactly been fun, but it has helped you get rid of things that have been holding you back. Around December 6, you may feel as if you are slipping back to the way you were before, but this is just a temporary glitch. You started to move into a new direction around November 11, but nothing will take you backwards. Once you wrap up the end of 2018, you’ll start to feel a lot lighter as you move into 2019. Remember December 31 is a great day to make a whole new fresh start by leaving behind the past and looking forward to better days ahead.
LIBRA: No one loves peace and harmony more than you. November
might feel a bit jarring as there is funky energy in the air around November 16. On December 7, Mars and Neptune collide, so don’t expect much from anyone. Your job is to appreciate all the good things that have happened to you during most of 2018. There have been some spectacular high points and you have worked hard to get where you are today. Don’t let the full moon on November 22 get you down. By the time you get to Christmas, you’ll feel lighter and in a more upbeat frame of mind. This holiday season will be one for the record books, so have fun!

November-December 2018
SCORPIO: You may feel like hiding in a hole in early November. The stress
of life has been weighing heavy on your soul. A little bit of isolation is good, but if you find you’re turning into a hermit, make sure you get out. Physical exercise is the best way to beat off any feelings of depression. If you haven’t been taking care of yourself in a physical way, you’ll be reminded of how important this is around November 16. You can’t beat up on your car without consequences, so why do you think your body is any different? If someone puts pressure on you during the period around December 16-20, just set boundaries and say no. You don’t have to take care of anyone else if you don’t want to.
SAGITTARIUS: Everyone will want you to attend their holiday parties. Jupiter, the planet of good fortune who is often compared to Santa Claus, is in your sign for the next year. Lucky you! This coming year is going to be one of your best ever. If people around you are down and out or acting like slugs, try to liven them up with all your positive energy. However, if they remain stuck, don’t force them to join your happiness parade. Your job is to always ask permission before giving any big support or advice. The full moon on November 22 is particularly auspicious for you. Remember to have an attitude of gratitude for all the blessings coming your way, especially towards the end of December. CAPRICORN: You’ve been plugging away at something for quite some
time and finally in November you feel as if you’ve crossed the finish line. To say you are exhausted is an understatement. You haven’t given yourself much down time, and by the time we get to early December, you are feeling it. Make sure you lay low and take it easy around December 7. Carving out quiet time with family and friends is imperative after December 16. This means get off the phone and the computer. The end of December has you feeling as if you’re exactly where you want to be. What a great way to end the year!
AQUARIUS: Family drama has caused some upheaval in your life recently.
Normally, you handle everything with a gentle air of confidence and equilibrium. But there is someone who is getting under your skin, especially around November 10-17. Try to remove yourself from situations where you might be tempted to blow up. This is not normal for you to be so upset, so remember not to take anything personally. Sometimes when people behave in not very nice ways, it’s because they are going through their own private hell. December brings some much-needed joy. There may be a continuing family drama around December 7, but you have clear sailing after that. The holidays will be meaningful and lovely, so take advantage of these wonderful moments.
PISCES: You certainly have had a dramatic 2018, which was jammed-
packed with lots of highs and lows. Things have come at you from all directions - family issues, health issues and work matters. Being the little fish that you are, you’ve managed to swim in and out of the danger zones with determination and clarity. You know exactly what you want and no one is stopping you. Just make sure you don’t get into power struggles with those closest to you. November is the month to process what you’ve gone through, and be understanding to those who have different opinions to yours. December 16-21 is a lovely time to be with loved ones. You’ll have a magical Christmas, and keep your focus on all the blessings in your life. The New Year offers a brand new and much needed fresh start!
