Choose the next experience !! When choosing a holiday destination one of the biggest challenges is knowing when to go and what to do. Travellers are bombarded with suggestions from the moment they arrive at their destinations and as a result, they need to be sure that they make the right choices. With this in mind, Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts created the brand Porto Bay Events to provide easier access to information and to integrate visitors more fully into the cities where they are staying. The initiative was launched on Madeira island, Portugal, but is now running at all Porto Bay hotel destinations in Portugal and Brazil : Algarve, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Búzios and now Lisbon.

Escolha a SUA próxima experiência !! Para quem escolhe um destino para uma viagem, um dos maiores desafios é saber quando ir e o que fazer. Entre a torrente de propostas com as quais os viajantes são bombardeados à chegada aos destinos, é preciso fazer escolhas e ter a garantia de que essas escolhas são as mais acertadas. A pensar nessa necessidade, para facilitar o acesso à informação e para melhor integrar os visitantes nas cidades onde está presente, Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts criou a marca Porto Bay Events. A iniciativa foi lançada na ilha da Madeira, em Portugal, mas está agora presente em todos os destinos onde existem unidades hoteleiras Porto Bay, em Portugal e no Brasil: Algarve, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Búzios e, agora, Lisboa.

In addition to the official calendar of events, Porto Bay also created other events under its own initiative. The selection allows the hotel group to join in with some of the most significant cultural events of each destination, showing that these moments can also be experienced at a Porto Bay hotel. Most events are publicised at least 6 months in advance. The list of events includes New Year celebrations in Madeira or in Rio de Janeiro; Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Madeira and in the Algarve; for golf, the Madeira Islands Open or the Portugal Masters, golf events in the Algarve, Fashion Week in São Paulo and many others. In Madeira, Porto Bay Events calendar covers most events in the official events calendar for this destination. In addition to these there are exclusive events such as the Chocolate and Madeira Wine week, in January, Classic Cars in June, Wine Week in early September, food festivals and other events. It is the same criteria in the Algarve. The calendar includes medieval festivals, others have traditional themes (such as the Fisherman’s Festival, in Albufeira or the Popular Saints tradition) there is also music, such as the Jazz Festival in Loulé, or the world music festival Festival Med. Each time these exclusive events take place they aim to embody the characteristics of each destination. One good example is the Madeira Carnival. As founders of the initiative, Porto Bay hotels take their guests to parade in a troupe in full traditional costume. “A unique experience” claims Ann Davidson, guest at the Porto Santa Maria hotel, with a big smile from between the feathers on her costume, confirming that she will be back to repeat the experience.

A seleção permite associar os hotéis do grupo a alguns dos acontecimentos mais marcantes e à cultura de cada destino, mostrando que esses momentos podem ser vividos também num hotel Porto Bay. A maior parte dos eventos é divulgada com mais de 6 meses de antecedência. Da lista de eventos fazem parte o “réveillon” na Madeira ou no Rio de Janeiro ; o Carnaval no Rio de Janeiro, na Madeira e no Algarve; o Madeira Islands Open, em golfe, ou o Portugal Masters, no Algarve, também em golfe ; a Fashion Week em São Paulo, entre muitos outros. Na Madeira o calendário Porto Bay Events cobre a maior parte dos acontecimentos do calendário oficial do destino. A estes juntam-se os eventos exclusivos, como a Semana do Chocolate e do Vinho Madeira, em Janeiro, os Carros Clássicos em Junho, a Semana do Vinho, no início de Setembro, festivais gastronómicos, entre outros. No Algarve o critério é o mesmo. O calendário inclui festas medievais, outras de cariz popular (como a Festa do Pescador, em Albufeira, ou os Santos Populares) e ainda música, como o Festival de Jazz de Loulé, ou o Festival Med, de música do Mundo. Há também espaço para o Chocolate, Doces Regionais e Vinhos Licorosos na Primavera e a Semana do Vinho em Outubro. A escolha dos eventos tem por base a sua importância no destino e a proximidade em relação aos hotéis. O “réveillon” no Rio é único, visto da cobertura do Porto Bay Rio Internacional, em Copacabana ; também sem-par na cidade maravilhosa e no mundo, é o Carnaval, que Porto Bay alinha com uma feijoada bem carioca entre mulatas. Os eventos exclusivos procuram, em cada época em que se realizam, tirar partido das características de cada destino. Um exemplo claro é o Carnaval na Madeira. The Stars Route food festival is an event created by Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts and their partners and is one of Portugal’s most well regarded culinary events. The concept is simple: a chef from a Michelin starred restaurant invites other chefs, not just from the same country but from other countries too. The result is a menu with dishes from each one of them, carefully combined right down to the finest detail. The Stars Route travels round the country throughout the year. The route starts every year on Madeira Island, at Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant at The Cliff Bay hotel, hosted by Chef Benoît Sinthon. Afterwards it continues to other Portuguese Michelin starred restaurants. These frequent gatherings create friendships between the chefs in Portuguese restaurants and help to integrate visiting guest chefs, some of whom make a point of coming back just for the pleasure of helping out. It’s about serving sugarcane honey, exotic fruits, aromatic herbs, edible flowers, vegetables, fresh fish from the island’s coast, Madeira wines and key examples of fantastic Portuguese wines. Use of local produce and how it is valued has always been a key part of this festival.

O festival gastronómico Rota das Estrelas foi criado por Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts e seus parceiros, sendo um dos acontecimentos que mais projecção tem na gastronomia de Portugal. O conceito é simples : um chefe de um restaurante com estrela Michelin convida outros chefes, não só do país, como também de outros países. O resultado é uma ementa com pratos de cada um deles, combinados ao mais ínfimo detalhe. Num roteiro que percorre o país ao longo do ano. A Rota começa todos os anos na ilha da Madeira, no restaurante Il Gallo d’Oro, do hotel The Cliff Bay, tendo o Chefe Benoît Sinthon como anfitrião. Depois segue por outros restaurantes portugueses com estrela Michelin. Estes encontros frequentes criaram laços de amizade entre os chefes dos restaurantes portugueses e facilitam a integração dos convidados estrangeiros, alguns dos quais fazem questão de ser repetentes e participar, só pelo prazer de ajudar. É ver à mesa o mel de cana sacarina, as frutas exóticas, as ervas aromáticas, as flores comestíveis, os legumes, o peixe fresco da costa da ilha, os vinhos Madeira e as principais referências dos fantásticos vinhos portugueses. A aproximação aos produtos locais e a sua valorização têm sido uma das mais-valias deste festival.

The Stars Route is not only limited to sublime 7 course dinners. There are workshops, demonstrations, work experience and training for students from the Hotel Management School and there are even public events at the Mercado dos Lavradores. The event at The Cliff Bay has become more international over the years. In the first event - in 2010 - we received 2 guest chefs, in 2013 we had 12. They were from various countries: Portugal, Spain, The United Kingdom, Austria, France, Hungary, Finland and even Japan. The one thing they have in common is that the quality of their food has been awarded 1 or 2 of the famous Michelin stars. Even more important is the fact that the Stars Route has, as recognised by critics, managed to achieve something that is very hard to do: they have managed to construct menus using different chefs’ dishes, from different restaurants and countries to create a balance, something that is never easy in these type of festivals. E a Rota das Estrelas não se resume aos sublimes jantares de 7 pratos. Corre workshops, demonstrações, abarca estágios e formação a alunos da escola hoteleira e vai até demonstrações públicas no Mercado dos Lavradores. O evento no The Cliff Bay tem feito um percurso de internacionalização ao longo dos anos. Se na primeira edição - em 2010 - recebemos 2 chefes convidados, em 2013 já contávamos com 12 chefes. Oriundos de vários países : Portugal, Espanha, Reino Unido, Aústria, França, Hungria, Finlândia e, até mesmo, Japão. Em comum, a qualidade da sua cozinha reconhecida com 1 ou 2 estrelas no famoso guia Michelin. Mais importante ainda é o facto de a Rota das Estrelas ter atingido um nível, reconhecido pelos críticos, em que o mais difícil foi conseguido : a construção das ementas, com pratos de vários chefes, restaurantes e países, resulta numa combinação harmoniosa, tarefa nem sempre fácil neste tipo de festivais.

The British magazine, Today’s Golfer voted the Algarve the best destination in Mainland Europe for playing golf. The criterion was based on the benefit-cost ratio and was based on votes from over 3 thousand voters. In spite of the celebrations, this type of news is not a surprise. Over the last few years there have been various international awards, including Best Golf Destination, a distinction awarded several times by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). The Algarve has 40 golf courses (32 with 18 holes and 8 that have 9 holes), spread across the whole region. Their locations favour natural surroundings. They are part of the landscape and provide good challenges for those playing. They are also easy access and the fact that they are relatively close together means that during holidays it’s possible to play on various courses, with many of them designed by former players and champions such as Nick Faldo. Due to its appeal for tourists and the quality of hotel resorts, the Algarve is one of the most popular destinations chosen by golfers from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Ireland and Holland, who represent the majority of demand. The climate allows you to play all year round. The Oceânico Golf, one of Porto Bay Falésia hotel’s partners, is one of the main golf operators in Portugal with nine courses, five of these in Vilamoura. Highlights include the Oceânico Old Course, considered one of the best in Portugal by Today’s Golfer, and the Oceânico Victoria Course which hosts the Portugal Masters, one of the top tournaments in Europe with a prize of 2.2 million euros. In 2012 over 1 million rounds of golf were played on golf courses in the Algarve. According to the Algarve Tourist Association (ATA) golf has attracted around 300 thousand tourists with total profits of 750 million euros for the export sector over the last few years.

There are two golf courses on Madeira Island and a third on Porto Santo. The golf experience and the quality of the existing golf courses have gained international recognition with awards and distinctions. In Santo da Serra, just metres from the Porto Bay Serra Golf hotel there is a golf course with 27 holes, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. where most of the Madeira Islands Open tournaments have been held over the last two decades, part of the PGA European Tour. The Rolex guide includes this course in its list of 1000 best courses in the world. Just like the other two courses this one is defined by its fantastic views and challenging holes. All Madeira’s courses are Par 72. Palheiro Golf, with 18 holes, was designed by Cabell Robinson and opened in 1993. The course was changed in 2003. Two holes were replaced and a mini-circuit of six holes was added. All 18 holes offer wonderful views of Funchal bay, with fast greens and narrow fairways that demand precise play. This welcoming and charming property compliments playing golf well, as it is alongside the biggest golf course on the island (27 holes), and for those wanting to enjoy nature it is alongside the Laurissilva forest, (classified a world heritage site by UNESCO). Other recommended ac-

tivities include horse riding, cycling, or walking to the picturesque town of Santo da Serra. The main house dates back to 1920, with Art Nouveau features on the façade, a freeze in floral tiles, windows with white wooden slats, and its fish-scale roof . .. its almost secular history takes us back to the 40s when it was a famous tea house and later on the first headquarters for the Santo da Serra Golf

Club. In 2001 it opened as a small hotel, hosting the celebrated golf champion Severiano Ballesteros as its first guest. The suit named after him is still specially requested by golf players. Visitors are welcome !! Porto Bay Serra Golf is famous for its afternoon tea with Grandmother Micas’ famous scones by the fireplace.

Nowadays the past is mixed with a modern, vibrant and bold culture. It is easy to wander the streets and alleyways and find all sorts of signs of artistic expression. But also indoors, the city’s theatres have a full and varied programme throughout the year and even if you don’t go to see a show, it’s worth taking a look at many of them just to appreciate their historical and architectural value. Lisbon is also now an essential stop for the biggest international artists and in the summer the festivals fill the city with music. With the low cost of living, especially for foreigners, it is easy to buy everything in Lisbon, from the most traditional products in Baixa Pombalina to really creative objects from shops in the Bairro Alto and Chiado for example. For big international brands it’s no coincidence that the Avenida da Liberdade is one of the world’s most expensive places. Whilst exploring and trying to get to know the city, dress comfortably because in order to really feel the city’s soul a bit of physical exertion is needed . .. Lisbon is about the visible details and the more hidden ones. Looking out on Lisbon across the Tagus is a unique visual experience. Several companies provide this service with boat trips leaving from Belém, Cais do Sodré, Terreiro do Paço, Cascais or Estoril. And as the sun sets the city doesn’t sleep. To see why Lisbon has some of the most famous night life in Europe, you just need to visit some of the places in Bairro Alto, Bica, Príncipe Real, Cais do Sodré, Alfama, Belém and Docas or Avenida 24 de Julho. The real night owls will see the light appear in the city again. Another day and the sun rises over Lisbon again.

Between visiting the Belém Tower, CCB or Jerónimos monastery why resist the famous “Pastéis de Belém” ? Just one isn’t enough !! Don’t forget to put lots of icing sugar and cinnamon on them. And now keep walking and enjoy watching the sunset over São Jorge castle. Some of the most important European chefs create true works of art in the city, but for the full experience you must also visit the tiny bars or “tascas”. In some of them they sing fado, and all of them serve Portuguese style “petiscos”. It’s hard to choose : a rich fish soup, stuffed eggs, “peixinhos da horta” (tempura green beans), “fava-rica” (broad beans cooked in garlic), Codfish “à Brás”, fried codfish, “meia-desfeita” (a cod and chickpea dish), baked hake Lisbon style, clams in white wine, grilled sardines, beef steak in cream sauce or steak Cafe, Portuguese marinated liver, cows hoof served with chickpeas, Convento de Alcântara style partridge, All served with a good Portuguese wine, of course !!

Não se esqueça de lhes (um só não basta !!) pôr muito açúcar em pó e canela. Já agora, siga caminho e aproveite para ver o pôr-do-sol no castelo de São Jorge. Alguns dos mais importantes chefes de cozinha da Europa fazem verdadeiras obras de arte gastronómicas na cidade, mas para a experiência estar completa também as tascas têm de ser visitadas. Em algumas delas canta-se o fado, e em todas são servidos petiscos à moda portuguesa. Hum, difícil é escolher : sopa rica de peixes, ovos verdes, peixinhos da horta, fava-rica, bacalhau à Brás, pataniscas de bacalhau, meia-desfeita, pescada à lisboeta, amêijoas à Bulhão Pato, sardinha assada, bife à Marrare ou bife à Café, iscas com elas, meia-unha com grão, perdizes “Convento de Alcântara”, pivetes guisados. new . .. hotel in lisbon !! Porto Bay Liberdade is Porto Bay group’s new charming hotel in Lisbon. The five star hotel will be located in the heart of the Portuguese capital, next to the famous Avenida da Liberdade, in Rua Rosa Araújo. And will be inaugurated in the Spring of 2014.

The project designer is architect Frederico Valsassina who has preserved the lovely early 20th century façade establishing a dialectic between the old and contemporary. When it comes to the interior design, the responsibility has fallen to James Ward and Paula Bianchi. With 98 rooms - including three suites

and nine junior suites - the hotel has a restaurant, spa zone and indoor pool, gym, garage and two lounge bars, one in the reception area with an outdoor esplanade and another in the hotel’s roof terrace. There will also be spaces for events and meetings. It’s waiting for you . ..

Rio de Janeiro, known as the “cidade maravilhosa” or marvellous city due to its beaches, climate and natural beauty, between the mountains and the sea, was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO for the cultural landscape category. The title is due to the exceptional urban scenery with the city’s natural beauty combined with human intervention which has inspired artists, musicians, landscape designers and city planners, the importance and universal value of which has now been recognised. The region was explored for the first time by Europeans in 1502 during the Portuguese expedition led by Gaspar Lemos. At the time, the land was inhabited by the indigenous Tupinambá and the Puri tribe. Guanabara bay, where Rio de Janeiro was established, was the first part of what is today’s city discovered by the explorers when they thought they had found a river. Tijuca Forest is home to the Pedra da Gávea, the botanical garden, a place of rich biodiversity and home to endangered species at risk of extinction, which has been named a World Biosphere Reserve. Copacabana beach with its famous walkway designed using Portuguese stones and Ipanema, which inspired the “bossa nova” also influenced the decision. Rio de Janeiro was the first entire city to be nominated as a candidate for a World Heritage category such as “cultural landscape”. From now on work will be carried out to preserve the areas of the city that are particularly valued by UNESCO.

Fado was recently declared “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO. Now it is not just a type of singing from Portugal with singers like Severa, Marceneiro, Amália, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Camané, Ana Moura and Carminho. Now it is a real world treasure. Fado started as part of popular culture in the eighteenth century Lisbon and was sung whilst people socialised in the fields, waited for the bullfights, in the streets and alleyways and the taverns. Initially it was associated with the margins of society and with trouble makers, in places frequented by prostitutes, sailors, bohemian aristocracy and womanisers. The singers are described as looking like ruffians with husky and hoarse voices often with tattoos, good at handling flick knives, talking in slang and using coarse language. It was a fun part of the Lisbon carnival entertainment but following the military coup in 1926 shows were subject to censorship and the urban song was badly affected, losing its old sense of character. Now it is a symbol of national identity and the source of the most popular Portuguese songs, it reaches out to everyone with the feelings in invoked : pain, jealousy, solitude, love. Portugal has many World Heritage things such as the town of Sintra, the prehistoric rock art at Foz Côa, the Laurissilva forest in Madeira and numerable monuments and historic centres. There are also tens of sites with Portuguese cultural influence around the world that are on UNESCO’s list.

Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Monchique, Portimão, Ria Formosa, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo or Vila Real de Santo António, as well as Albufeira, provide trails that vary in difficulty and scenery type. The trails can cover several kilometres, between small villages, riversides and streams, natural parks and forest areas. As well as the landscapes, the routes enable you to see the flora and fauna that define the Algarve’s landscape. This landscape varies depending on where you are. You don’t need any special equipment to do the trails. You just need to be in good shape. It is important to follow the information on the leaflets that are provided for each trail. In the Albufeira area where the Porto Bay Falésia hotel is located, there is a trail with three different options. Leaving from three different points, they all lead to the Pederne Castle, a historical building built by Muslims in the 12th century. The walk is between 2.6 and 4 km, along the Ribeira de Quarteira and there is the chance to observe several species of plants, such as Olive trees or animals such as the Snowy egret or the Brazilian Porcupine, amongst many others. The bars serve punch, a traditional drink made from honey, firewater made from sugar cane and lemon juice to produce a pleasant cocktail to which different flavours can be added such as passion fruit, tangerine and ‘pitanga’ (a red Brazilian berry). This movement started in the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos and spread to Funchal and now exists across the whole island. A new approach to this tradition was adopted and the result is such that no one should contemplate visiting Madeira without trying its famous Punch. One of the many places where you can have this experience is the Zona Velha or Old Town, the name given to the oldest part of Funchal city. There are many restaurants and bars there. But over the last few months the number of visitors, above all to the Rua de Santa Maria, has increased considerably. Various initiatives combine to make this area of the city more dynamic and lively. The “ON Fusion Art” festival promoted by Porto Bay with their hotel Porto Santa Maria, featured artists and musicians active in the area since 2006. More recently, this dynamic has become a constant presence, at any time of day, every day of the week, with the influence of the esplanades and Portas Abertas Arts movement.

Esse movimento iniciado na cidade piscatória de Câmara de Lobos, cresceu, passou para o Funchal e hoje está em toda a ilha. Sobre a tradição foi inventada uma nova abordagem e o resultado é tal, que ninguém imagina visitar a Madeira sem provar a tão famosa poncha. Um dos muitos locais onde pode ter esta experiência é a Zona Velha, o nome dado à parte mais antiga da cidade do Funchal. Aí multiplicam-se restaurantes e bares. Mas nos últimos meses o número de visitantes, sobretudo da Rua de Santa Maria, tem subido consideravelmente. Golden earthy and pastel shades predominate in the newly decorated Il Gallo d’Oro, the only restaurant with a Michelin star on Madeira island, located right in the entrance of The Cliff Bay hotel. The aim was to improve the space, especially the restaurant lounge to be on a par with the award-winning food. The décor is intended to be timeless, not following the latest fashion, which changes constantly. The chosen colour tones aim to please all generations, combining the contemporary with the classic. The new image also improves the identity of the Il Gallo d’Oro brand, stylized using the figure of two cockerels on one of its walls. The wine service has been improved. As soon as you enter the restaurant a new wine cellar allows you to choose your wine before taking a seat at your table and looking at the menu. The wines are stored at the perfect temperature and there are over 300 to choose from, with champagnes, sparkling wines and red, white and dessert wines. The wine list, specifically created for Il Gallo d’Oro favours Portuguese wines above other regions. There are some Cuvee in the champagne selection. The dessert wine choices include a good choice of vintages, one highlight being the award winning 1920 Madeira Bual. This selection of wines gained the recognition of Wine Spectator magazine, which awarded Il Gallo d’Oro an “Award of Excellence”. The food retains the creative spirit of chef Benôit Sinthon, flavourful food with a Mediterranean and Iberian influence, using local products from Madeira, which the chef is a big fan of. This prize winning food continues to surprise, being well-balanced and fresh with a careful choice of ingredients and a taste that will please everyone. The Arsenal, the restaurant in the Porto Santa Maria Hotel, in the Old Quarter of the city of Funchal, has been newly decorated. The different shades of ocean blue enliven the area and complement the pastel tones that light up the buffet. The renovation extends to the furniture, fabrics, dishes and equipment. At Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts fine dining is guaranteed and it is a unique and unforgettable experience. It comes from combining guest preferences with the chefs’ creativity and using the most traditional flavours from the area. Every night all year round there is a range of exciting food on offer. In Madeira, in The Cliff Bay each night there is a themed buffet with food from different places, served in The Rose Garden, sometimes accompanied by live traditional Portuguese music. Once a week Il Gallo d’Oro holds the Dinner Dance, a dinner with a memorable atmosphere. In the summer, Il Gallo d’Oro reaches out to the sea and does a homage to fish. In Porto Santa Maria there is also a themed buffet every day. Each week guests are also invited to try Gourmet Flavours, where the Chef surprises everyone with his creations. Every week in the summer here is a barbecue on the esplanade next to the pool served in a relaxed atmosphere and accompanied with live music. The four restaurants in the Vila Porto Mare resort offer a different “feel” every day. Madeira’s best regional meats, cured in the hotel kitchen, are served at Meat Lovers. In the Sea Flavours & Fado dinner delicious Atlantic fish is on offer, served to the sound of Fado, a World Heritage music that is a symbol of Portugal. Other events on offer include the One Night Dinner Show, a dinner with dance show entertainment. In summer there are two great outdoor dining options : the Pink Party and the Barbecue. In the summer, Porto Bay Falésia in the Algarve hosts an evening with live Brazilian music. These dinners are held at viewpoints with wonderful views overlooking Falésia Beach. The creation and production of pastries and confectionery in Portugal really took off in the 15th century. During the age of Discoveries, access to spices and new ingredients made it easier than ever. With the new maritime routes for trade and the development of techniques for producing sugar (first on Madeira Island and later on in Brazil), Portugal’s convents and monasteries were production centres for traditional confectionery and are still home to the country’s confectionery today. The Pastel de Nata is one of the icons of Portuguese culture and confectionery. Made to an original recipe from the Santa Maria de Belém Monastery (what is now Jerónimos Monastery), in Lisbon and on sale since 1837 under the name Pastel de Belém. At the time, Lisbon and Belém were two separate cities connected by steam boat. The Monastery and Belém Tower attract many tourists that find the beauty and flavour of these pastries delicious. At Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts we maintain traditions !! That’s why everyone that visits us in Portugal will find the famous ‘pastéis de nata’ fresh from the oven at our breakfast buffets... and the flavour just reached Brazil. Recently, the smell of the famous Portuguese pastries mixes with that of the famous Brazilian ‘pão de queijo’ in hotels in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. A real treat to start the day !!

Foi no séc. XV que se aumentou significativamente a criação e produção de doces em Portugal. Nesta fase dos grandes Descobrimentos, o acesso a especiarias e a novos ingredientes tornara-se mais fácil que nunca. Com as novas rotas marítimas para o comércio e o incremento de técnicas para a fabricação de açúcar (primeiro na ilha da Madeira e mais tarde no Brasil), Portugal tinha nos seus conventos e mosteiros os centros de produção da doçaria conventual, ainda hoje, base da doçaria deste país. O Pastel de Nata é um dos ícones da cultura e doçaria portuguesa. A receita, original do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Belém (atual Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), em Lisboa, é comercializada desde 1837 sob o nome de Pastel de Belém. Naquela época, Lisboa e Belém eram duas cidades separadas ligadas por embarcações a vapor. O Mosteiro e a Torre de Belém atraíam muitos turistas que ficavam deliciados pela beleza e o sabor destes pastéis. Em Porto Bay Hotels & Resorts mantemos tradições !! Something for everyone, in specialised magazines, the best restaurants and in fine dining circles, Portuguese wines are increasingly an object of curiosity. Specialists have no doubts about the unparalleled quality of these wines, which have been developed in recent years, increasing the range, developing brands and producing wine of ever increasing quality. As well as the creative work of oenologists, the secret lies in diversity. In spite of being a small country, Portugal is a country with almost 285 native grape varieties as well as the well-known international varieties which also grow well on Portuguese soil. Some of these native varieties are very well known internationally, such as the red wines Touriga Nacional, Baga or Castelão, or the whites Alvarinho, Arinto, or Fernão Pires. The geography is also varied. There are 15 demarcated regions, each with unique characteristics, such as the Douro which is the oldest region in the World or the Vinhos Verdes region where unique wines are produced, or even Madeira, where one of the most highly prized and well known liquors on the planet is produced. It is the relatively small scale of production that makes Portuguese wine an objective of desire. This culture is well established in the country and is closely linked to Portugal’s reputation as a country with good cuisine. Wine is an important economic activity but, above all a strong symbol of Portuguese identity.

Além da criatividade dos enólogos, o segredo deste sucesso está na diversidade. Apesar da sua pequena dimensão, Portugal é um país com cerca de 285 castas nativas, a que se juntam as castas internacionais mais conhecidas, que também se dão bem em solos portugueses.
