OLD PORVOO
Old Porvoo R
ed riverside warehouses welcome the traveller to Old Porvoo, as they have done for the past 300 years. The warehouses were originally used to store trade goods and they remain an eminent Porvoo symbol that is recognised from school books. People want to see the view over and over again and capture it in photos. Nowadays, the warehouses host some restaurants and shops, but most of them are in private use. Behind the warehouses, a network of pebbled
streets stretches out, lined by colourful old buildings hosting small boutiques, cafĂŠs and restaurants and interesting museums. The neighbourhood has approximately 550 buildings, of which 250 are residential buildings, and around 700 people call Old Porvoo their home. On top of the hill, in the heart of Old Porvoo, you can see the Porvoo Cathedral. Its eventful history dates back to the turn of the 14th century. One of the most important events was the Diet of Porvoo, during which the Cathedral
served as one of the central venues, in 1809, that launched the period of Finnish autonomy. Over the centuries, this beautiful church has burnt down five times. Nowadays, Old Porvoo in its present form attracts visitors from all over the world, and it is no wonder – it is truly unique. Even though the neighbourhood lives very much in the present, there are many things that stay the same, most importantly, the atmosphere!

Porvoo is well known for the red-ochre painted wooden warehouses lining the river banks. In the old days, ships used to come upriver from the sea to unload and load their cargo here. The warehouses were used by the merchants to store the goods. They lined both banks of the river. The bridge offers a picturesque view of the river.

The yellow stone building houses Finland’s oldest department store (1854) still in operation. The Simolins also used to own the tall brick warehouse right next to the Mannerheiminkatu bridge. Both buildings are now under new ownership.
Famous historical figures who have spent the night in J. E. Solitander’s house (Jokikatu 12) include the Swedish King Gustav III and the Emperor of Russia, Alexander I, during the Diet of Porvoo. For the Emperor, a wooden walkway was even built from the house to the Cathedral. This way, he could walk to the Cathedral without getting his feet wet. Nowadays the house is in private ownership.

A former bank. Around here is the site where the Astenius Inn stood at the beginning of the 19th century. Finland’s national poet J. L. Runeberg spent his first night there when he arrived in the town of Porvoo. It is thought that the well-loved Runeberg torte is the result of product development by the inn’s bakery.
Completed in 1764, the tower some years later, the building is one of Finland’s oldest town halls. The plot was donated by Alderman Rahling, after whom the narrow lane starting from the corner of the building, Rahlinginkuja, was named. It was in the Town Hall that the nobility and the burghers’ estates convened during the Diet of Porvoo in 1809. Now the building houses the Porvoo Museum.

The Porvoo Diet was both opened and closed in the Cathedral in 1809, and a statue of Emperor Alexander I of Russia commemorates this historical event. L. Statue of A. Edelfelt
Albert Edelfelt was born in 1854 in Kiiala, 4 km outside Porvoo. The statue looks towards the manor house where he was born. The young Edelfelt went to Paris to study, but always returned to Porvoo in summer. He immortalised well-known Porvoo views in his paintings and is one of the best loved of Finnish artists. Edelfelt’s studio museum is located in Haikko (see page 7). The house of Judge Orreaus behind the statue is where the peasant estate convened during the Diet of Porvoo. Nowadays there is a restaurant in a building in the courtyard.

It was about here that the Great Fire of Porvoo started in 1760. Of the town’s 293 houses, more than 200 burned down. The cause of the fire turned out to be a fish soup cooked in the small hours of the morning: the fire blazed up when the housewife left the stove unattended for a moment. However, the people of Porvoo showed great determination and rebuilt their houses on the old stone foundations.

Gabriel Linsén (1838–1914) was a prolific composer and music teacher at the Porvoo grammar school. His wife Natalia was Finland’s first female photographer and an energetic activist in social affairs and education in Porvoo. At first they lived near the park, but later moved over to the Empire-style district of Porvoo. Gabriel Linsén and his students used to greet the poet Runeberg, who lived nearby, on his birthday (5 February) by singing under his window (for Runeberg’s Home see p. 5). The tradition has continued until this day!

Memories flavoured like dreams “We spent two nights at the Old Town Bed & Breakfast Ida-Maria and it was one of the best places we stayed at EVER. Every spot in the house is so cosy and the breakfast is just amazing – there is everything you can wish for plus it is fresh and of the best quality. Not like the usual run-of-the-mine hotel breakfast you have to fight over with hundreds of other guests, no, you sit in the nice living room with not more than eight other people.” www.likeariot.com “The calm, empty streets at night, the forest and Linnamäki, a taste of the aforementioned cuisine, browsing odd little stores, beautiful boutiques, take a walk on the other side of the city and a bit further out – there is more to discover in Porvoo than you might think. I can easily recommend to stay over night, or at least to spend a full day in the town.” www.luminoucity.net “I had never visited Porvoo before. And that’s really, really unfortunate... Because this place is loaded with delicious. While I’m not a chocolate lover, I still did my fair share of damage on the liquorice truffles. Holy foodgasm.” www.katrinamwalker.com
“All in all we would recommend to not just go on a day trip to Porvoo but to stay for a few nights – pure relaxation if you are looking for an escape of the big city life. And even if there are quite a few tourists strolling through town by day, at night everybody leaves and all that’s left is peace and quiet!” www.likeariot.com “Old Town Porvoo is like Venice, Italy and the lovely villages of Santorini, Greece (Fira and Oia). During the day the place is busy with people and there are certain hour intervals where crowds literally gather in a particular street or area, but during the night, it is deserted. Well, I have seen it.” www.travelandlifestylediaries.com

NATIONAL URBAN PARK AND ACTIVITIES
The most intriguing route to the story of the city. P
a comprehensive, integrated whole. The national urban park in Porvoo was established in 2010 and it extends approximately 10 km south from Old Porvoo, via the river estuary to the archipelago, as well as 8 km east.
The purpose of national urban parks is to preserve urban nature and built cultural environments so that they form
You get around the park using streets, walkways and biking routes, pavements and nature walks and by paddling and boating on the river and sea.
orvoo’s centre opens up to a national urban park, in which beautiful views and natural attractions are available for everyone by foot, bike or paddling on a SUP board. In winter, you can go cross-country skiing, icefishing or downhill skiing.
Walk and enjoy When on the riverbanks in Porvoo, you are already in the national urban park. Take a few additional steps and you will dive more deep into the park. Here are some suggestions: 1. Näsinmäki. Cross the river on the bridge of your choice and head for the Näsi rock. Enjoy the view and take on of the paths down to the cannon. 2. Maari. Walk to the north side of Old Porvoo and admire the flowing river and the old railway station. Don’t forget to look behind you – you will see Old Porvoo at its best! 3. Linnamäki. Stroll around the mysterious Linnamäki with its bridges and paths, and enjoy the views to the river and Old Porvoo.
SUP boarding Go out and explore the riverside warehouses from the river. A SUP board is a stable surfboard that you can paddle either sitting down or standing up. We recommend a route that runs in front of the warehouses and further upstream. SUP boards are available for hire during the summer season at the address: Jokikatu 35 b, where you can also ask about SUP courses, yoga and paddling tours. You can hire the equipment and take it with you to a summer cottage! Hire a SUP board and fall in love! www.porvoo.fi www.summersup.fi www.erimover.com

NATIONAL URBAN PARK AND ACTIVITIES
Learn and relax in the nature There are several nature walks available in the area of the national urban park, and here we introduce some that are worth trying out! 1. Sikosaari. Sikosaari is located in the Ruskis bay that is a birdwatching area of international standard and has a birdwatching tower. In the eastern part of Sikosaari, you can find a 1.5-km long, easy nature walk that includes walking on duckboards in the some wet places. 2. Ekudden nature walk This nature walk is a little over two km in length. You will see, in addition to leaf-tree groves, fields, seashore rocks, reeds and meadows.
Bike into nature A bike is a convenient way of getting around in the national urban park. The park is not a route of its own but one that takes advantage of walkways, some of which are gravel and others paved. At times, it is a good idea to lock up your bike and explore nature by foot, for example at Linnamäki, Näsinmäki, Tornikallio, Sikosaari nature walk or the Lennätinvuori hill. A bike will get you to the places you want to see! Bikes are available for hire during the summer season at the address: Jokikatu 35 b, under Mannerheiminkatu Bridge. www.rentbikefinland.fi
Cross-country or downhill skiing or biking The national urban park is at your disposal around the year. In winter, the Kokonniemi area has skiing tracks and a downhill ski run; in mid-winter, if there is enough ice, the city builds skiing tracks on ice, all the way from Hamari to Mäntysaari island. Skiing equipment (cross country, downhill, snowboarding) is available for hire at the Kokonniemi ski resort. In the summer, the ski resort turns into the Kokonniemi Bike Park, where the lift gets you and your bike up the hill and gravity will help you down. www.kokonniemi.fi

In the river delta, the sea means shallow water, with wind rustling in the reeds and internationally acknowledged bird reserves, and the national urban park. Next come the islands with forests, people and life. Farther out, there is the horizon and rocky islets. On one such islet, Tove Jansson used to spend several months each year.
With the change of the seasons, you can experience each place in a new way. The sandy beach turns into a place for star gazing on a dark autumn evening. When looking from the seashore rocks, the frozen sea is like a white, endless field. In spring, the melting ice gives a promise of the summer ahead. Fishing permits
Recreational islands
Pellinki
To obtain a fishing permit in Finland there are two fees to be paid by adults: the state fishing management fee and the fee for permission from the owner of the water area (In Porvoo this is mainly the lure fishing fee for the Southern Finland region). Not far from Porvoo centre you can fish at Kokonniemi (at the end of Kokonniementie road) and at the bridges leading to Sikosaari. For hook and line angling or ice fishing no separate permit is needed. Ice-fishing in the city, when the Porvoonjoki River is covered by ice, is a widely popular sport in the winter months. For more information see: www.ahven.net
Outdoor activities in the islands If you have your own boat you should definitely head for one the beautiful islands of the Porvoo archipelago. You can pitch your tent on Mäntysaari and Norrholmen islands. Norra Sandö has a great sandy beach and a campfire site. There are also campfire sites at Brokholmen, Bredholmen, Stornäsuddena, Onas and Äggskär. www.uudenmaanvirkistysalueyhdistys.fi
You can reach the island of Pellinki by boat, but also by car and bus. Pellinki’s places of interest include art gallery ArtMarina and the Hörbergsgården archipelago home. The weekly summer market in Sandholmsudden is where the locals and summer residents like to convene. You can visit the summer market on Saturdays, 28 May–10 Sep from 9am–12 noon. www.pellinge.net
