Welcome to Porvoo Finland’s best tourist town*!

Porvoo is Finland’s second oldest town. People come from all over the world to see the Old Town – and no wonder – it is unique. Although it lives in the present, many aspects of the area have been left untouched by the passage of time – above all the atmosphere! A leisurely walk, a visit to a museum or exhibition, a break to enjoy a tasty meal or a drink – these are the most popular ingredients of an excursion to Porvoo. But why not this time spend the night and continue the next day without any hurry. Walking north you will find the old railway station area. Walking south you come to the river bank or you can continue out towards the sea. In summer there are plenty of things to do and see in Porvoo: our weekly programme gives many hints. The west bank of the River Porvoonjoki is currently being developed. In spring 2012 the Porvoo Art Factory will open, a centre for the arts, culture, events and business and services, including Porvoo City Tourist Office. * The best tourist town – Porvoo: Survey by Taloustutkimus Oy: Towns as Tourist Destinations, 2011.

Many routes to Porvoo! There are many ways to get to Finland’s second oldest city: by car or bus, or in summer also by boat, ship, train, motorcycle or bike. At fastest the journey from Helsinki to Porvoo takes less than an hour. By road The most direct route is by the motorway, but the Helsingintie (old Helsinki Road) and Vanha Kuninkaantie (Old King’s Road) bring back memories of historic times. The view of the city opening up from the Old Bridge is still almost unchanged, as it was seen by the King’s messengers or postmen arriving in the town. Parking lots are marked on the map on pages 46–47. They are only a short distance from Porvoo’s centre, so you can easily walk.

Other routes The sea route is a pleasant alternative, passing through the peaceful archipelago and along the busy riverside. You can either use your own boat (see guest marina p. 29), or get on board at Helsinki Market Square. There are two possibilities: m/s J.L. Runeberg and the Royal Line. There are frequent bus connections to Porvoo directly from Helsinki and also from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. For bus timetables see www.matkahuolto.fi

A railway line was built to Porvoo at the end of the 19th century, financed by forward-looking businessmen. The same spirit of enterprise is shown by the museum line operators of today. The journey to Porvoo on the old steam engine or railcar is really fun.

m/s J.L. Runeberg This year the romantic old m/s J.L. Runeberg is celebrating its 100th anniversary. In 2012 it cruises almost daily between Helsinki and Porvoo from 11 May to 8 September. Built originally as a steamship in Helsinki in 1912, the vessel is still in superb condition. It is regularly serviced and restored with respect for old traditions. Forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Take a cruise through the wonderful archipelago seascape! In the middle of the summer we also sail once a week to Loviisa. The ship has a fully licensed café. On board you can enjoy a tasty lunch with salmon soup, not to mention coffee and delicious Runeberg cakes! Other options are available for groups by arrangement.

Porvoo through the ages The coats of arms of mediaeval Finnish towns usually had a letter of the alphabet as a motif. In the Porvoo coat of arms the letter is a silver C, resembling a fire striking iron, which signified a castle (castrum or castellum in Latin). The coat of arms of Porvoo is the only one that has kept the shape of a pointed Gothic shield. Its oldest version is from the year 1423. The ‘Porvoo measure’ During Swedish rule, the bailiff collected taxes from the inhabitants in the form of grain, game, fish, and furs. He used two measures, a larger one when collecting taxes and a smaller one when delivering the taxes to the king. He kept the difference for himself. This story was the basis for the creation of the ‘Porvoo measure’, a tin mug with a false bottom. The measures can be bought in several shops in the Old Town.

Old Porvoo The Old Town of Porvoo is unique. The mosaic-like town plan with its maze of streets and irregularly shaped plots dates back to the Middle Ages. Since then the town suffered many fires, but always the stubborn citizens rebuilt their houses on the same foundations. Many of the boutiques and services are located on Jokikatu and Välikatu Streets and around the church, but it’s also worth looking a bit further. In the sidestreets and lanes it’s easy to take a step back in time and forget the modern world. The small idyllic parks and sleepy cobbled streets among the houses entice the visitor to linger and reflect on the past. See map of walking tours on p. 16-17. In 1809 Porvoo was a centre of attention in all of Northern Europe. Sweden had lost the war and Finland was ceded to Russia. The Russian Czar, Aleksander I, convened the Estates of Finland for the Diet of Porvoo. It is easy to imagine the Czar’s journey from the ‘castle’ in Jokikatu Street to the Cathedral, as many of the houses still stand on their original sites.

From Empire-style town to modern city A different Porvoo opens up on the other side of the main street, Mannerheiminkatu. South of the commercial centre and Aleksanterinkatu Street the 19th century Empire-style district of the town spreads out. The town plan was drawn by the renowned architect Engel, and it was to have extended across Old Porvoo: the grid plan would have straightened the winding streets and placed the buildings along rectangular blocks. Happily, the citizens of Porvoo opposed the plan with such resolution that at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the plan for Old Porvoo was abandoned. In the southern part of the town, however, the plan was realized and even today entire Empire-style blocks are still intact.

As the name tells you, the old railway station area is a reminder of the times when there was still a regular train connection to Helsinki. Rail traffic started at the end of the 19th century and goods traffic continued into the 1990s. Nowadays in summertime a steam engine and railcar carry tourists between Porvoo and Kerava (see rail traffic, p. 5). The building of a private railway and railway station in Porvoo bears testimony to the efforts made by the bourgeoisie of the coastal town to establish traffic and commercial connections with the interior, at a time when rail traffic was developing and its importance as a form of transport was increasing. In terms of landscape, the station has a central location in Porvoo, on the river bank opposite Linnamäki Hill and Old Porvoo. The railway station area has preserved its unique character as a place where people live, do business and create culture. The old station is still standing and today, it is home to an old-fashioned ironmonger’s shop among others. There is also a shop in the adjacent old warehouse, as well as a café and Taide Makasiini Art, a space where monthly changing art exhibitions are held. The engine shed is still in its original use, providing shelter for the old steam engine.

5

Porvoon Wanha Rautakauppa This traditional ironmonger’s shop is a treasure trove for the renovator: you will find old fittings, locks, hinges, rivets, screws, ranges, stoves, cookers, hotplates and rings, hatches, light fixtures and lamps, electrical supplies, wallpaper, old-style tools, books on heritage and renovation construction, old doors and windows, and linen insulation material.

The Art Factory – a new perspective on Porvoo The Art Factory to open in spring 2012 is a unique complex, where art, entertainment and the business world will meet. The Art Factory’s superb situation on the river bank, within walking distance of the Market Square and Old Porvoo, provides an opportunity to experience Porvoo in a completely new way. The old industrial milieu of the Art Factory offers a magnificent setting for concerts, conferences and congresses, and for large and small events combined with the pictorial and dramatic arts. The Art Factory houses premises of various sizes which can be rented for functions alongside artists’ studios and workshops. The tourist will certainly be interested in the specialty shops and boutiques in the area, the super-modern Bio Rex Cinema and Bistro Sinne with its offering of locally procuded food. The Art Factory also houses the Porvoo City Tourist Office point and Internet café. In the Art Hall, located in the Art Factory, you will see changing exhibitions and the interesting art collection of Yrjö A. Jäntti. The Konsta Art Lending Service will also move to the Art Factory – a unique venue for various cultural and other events.

A light-hearted music festival: Porvoo Fest 8–10 Jun 2012 Porvoo Fest will take over the town, from the Art Factory to the Cathedral. The festival will focus on fresh, acoustic music, respecting the spirit of the Old Town. While the brand new Art Factory will attract a wide audience with its versatile concert programme of light music and jazz, Porvoo Fest will also provide opportunities to listen to music by renowned artists in the tranquil atmosphere of Porvoo Cathedral. The programme also includes high quality children’s events and community singing – all this with a Porvoo twist, of course, and in both Finnish and Swedish.

Avanti! Summer Sounds 27 Jun–1 Jul 2012 The 27th Avanti! Summer Sounds programme is planned by conductor Susanna Mälkki. Summer Sounds offers unique concert experiences, where old sounds like new and it is easy to discover the very new. Avanti! makes bold choices and seeks out fresh perspectives. When the Summer Sounds tickets are for sale in spring, it’s worth booking accommodation and enjoying the atmosphere of Summer Sounds for a few days in idyllic Porvoo. Avanti! Summer Sounds delighted audiences in summer 2011 while the Art Factory was still undergoing major refurbishment. In 2012 music will once again resound in the beautifully restored Avanti Hall.

Completed in 1764, the tower some years later, the building is one of Finland’s oldest town halls. The plot was donated by Town Councillor Rahling, after whom the narrow lane starting from the corner of the building, Rahlinginkuja, was named. It was in the Town Hall that the nobility and the burghers’ estates convened during the Diet of Porvoo in 1809. Now the building houses the Porvoo Museum.

D. Porvoo ‘Castle’ Famous historical figures who have spent the night in J.E. Solitander’s house (Jokikatu 12) include the Swedish King Gustav III and the Czar of Russia, Alexander I, during the Diet of Porvoo. For the Czar a wooden walkway was even built from the house to the Cathedral so that he could walk there without getting his feet wet. Nowadays the house is in private ownership.

E. Bridge on Mannerheiminkatu Street Porvoo is well known for the red ochre painted wooden shorehouses lining the river banks. In the old days ships used to come upriver from the sea to unload and load their cargo here. The buildings which line both banks of the river were the merchants’ warehouses. The bridge offers a picturesque view of the river.

Now you can choose route Ea or Eb.

A. The Valtimo Building Near this old bank property is the site where the Astenius Inn stood at the beginning of the 19th century. Finland’s national poet J.L. Runeberg spent the night there when he first arrived in the town of Porvoo. It is thought that the well-loved Runeberg cake is the result of product development by the inn’s bakery.

Let’s walk around Old Porvoo. All year round there is plenty to see: architecture, art, handicrafts and antiques. In summer you will find the guided walking tours in the weekly programme (see pages 2425). You can also walk the 2 km route marked on the adjacent map at your own pace. The route is as follows:

last used in the battles of the Continuation War (1941–44). It was moved here as a memorial. Route Eb follows a sand road to the cemetery and continues from there down to the riverbank. The Näsinmäki cemetery was consecrated in 1789. National poet J.L. Runeberg (1804–77) and his wife Fredrika (1807-79) are both buried there, as is sculptor Ville Vallgren (1855-1940).

F. The Old Bridge Kuninkaantie, King’s Road, leading from Turku to Vyborg, once an important Finnish town and now in Russia, is also known as the Great Coast Road. It used to take travellers over the Old Bridge to Porvoo. A fantastic view of the waterfront storehouses, the Cathedral, and the

picturesque Old Town opens up from the bridge. Near the bridge is the old railway station area. Nowadays museum trains run to Porvoo in summer and the station area has been transformed into an attractive operating environment for enterprises involved in handicrafts, interior design and art.

G. Porvoo Cathedral The first church was built on the church hill in the late 13th and early 14th century. The present church was built in the 1450s. Over the centuries it has been destroyed and pillaged several times, but its consecration as a Cathedral was celebrated in 1723, when the seat of the former Cathedral, Vyborg, was left behind the Russian border.

L. Statue of A. Edelfelt Albert Edelfelt was born in 1854 in Kiiala, 4 km outside Porvoo. The statue looks towards the manor house where he was born. The young Edelfelt went to Paris to study, but always returned to Porvoo in summer. He immortalised well-known Porvoo views in his paintings and is one of the best loved of Finnish artists. Edelfelt’s studio museum is located in Haikko (see page 16). The house of Judge Orreaus behind the statue is where the peasant estate convened during the Diet of Porvoo. M. Vuorikatu It was about here that the Great Fire of Porvoo started in 1760. Of the town’s 293 houses, more than 200 burned down. The cause of the fire turned out to be a fish soup cooked in the small hours of the morning: the fire blazed up when the housewife left the stove unguarded for a moment. However, the people of Porvoo showed great determination and rebuilt their houses on the old stone foundations.

Ea Eb The Porvoo Diet was both opened and closed in the Cathedral in 1809, and a statue of Czar Alexander I commemorates this historical event. As a result of arson, the church was damaged by fire in 2006, but it has since been restored and was re-inaugurated in November 2008.

H. The Chapter House The Porvoon Kymnaasi school building was completed in 1759 and served as a grammar school until 1850. The clergy convened there during the Diet in 1809. Czar Alexander I held his opening speech there, and a ball to celebrate the Diet was held in the great hall upstairs. The story goes that the Czar was much taken by a young lady who had dropped her fan, Miss Ulla Möllersvärd.

Along with Porvoo Cathedral and the Town Hall, it is one of Finland’s national monuments. The building now houses the Chapter House.

Gabriel Linsén (1838–1914) was a proliferous composer and music teacher at the Porvoo grammar school. His wife Natalia was Finland’s first female photographer and an energetic activist in social affairs and education in Porvoo. At first they lived near the park, but later moved over to the Empire-style district of Porvoo. Gabriel Linsén and his students used to greet the poet Runeberg, who lived nearby, on his birthday (5 February) by singing under his window (for Runeberg’s Home see p. 17). The tradition has continued until this day! In summer 2012 the Porvoo City Tourist Office will move to the Art Factory, Kokonniementie 6.

A typical 19th century milieu in the Empirestyle part of town, this house was home to the Runeberg family from the year 1852 to the poet’s death in 1877. The household articles and furniture tell the story of the family’s everyday and social life, see p. 9.

There is also a new Tourist Information point in the Art Factory.

b) August Eklöf Park August Eklöf (1837–1912) and the enterprises founded by him, which included sawmills, factories, forestry, barges etc, were important employers for about 100 years in Porvoo. Cultural life and cultural figures For centuries Porvoo has been favoured by artists and other cultural figures as a place to live. Among them the artist Albert Edelfelt, Finland’s national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg and sculptor Ville Vallgren have drawn inspiration from Porvoo’s special charm and milieu. Ville Vallgren (1855–1940) was a lover of art and good food. Born in Porvoo, the sculptor’s road took him via Helsinki to Paris. There he studied and worked for 36 years and and was given the nickname “Pariisin Ville – Ville de Paris”. Vallgren was above all a depicter of female beauty, who attained international renown in the late 19th century with his miniature sculptures and symbolic ornaments. His best known work in Finland, however, is the statue of Havis Amanda in the Helsinki Market Square. Ville Vallgren was good company and known for his hearty sense of humour. He was also a culinarist who enjoyed pottering in the kitchen and the garden. His love for good food and drink inspired the sculptor to such an extent that he wrote several books on the subject.

Vallgren visible in the cultural scene and in the street scene Porvoo Museum currently has a special exhibition called “La Belle Époque”, where works by artist Albert Edelfelt and sculptor Ville Vallgren are on display. www.porvoonmuseo.fi Restaurant Walgrens and Hotel Pariisin Ville have both taken their names from the sculptor, renowned for his love of good food and good company. www.walgrens.fi www.pariisinville.fi

Christmas in Porvoo Christmas is a very special time in Porvoo. The whole town is in its Christmas finery, with sparkling Christmas lights, beautifully decorated shop windows and enticing Christmas scents. Take a welcome break from Christmas shopping, sit down and rest your feet in a café while you enjoy a steaming hot drink and a bite. Christmas in Porvoo is a busy time. Christmas fairs and markets, the crowning of St. Lucia, and the declaration of Christmas Peace are among the town’s traditions. You can celebrate the coming of Christmas in many different ways. Christmas opening ceremonies are held in the town centre and in Old Porvoo, and at the numerous fairs you will find special gifts to fill friends’ and family’s Christmas stockings.

Declaration of Christmas Peace According to tradition, the period of Christmas Peace began on St. Thomas’ Day (21st December) and ended on St. Knut’s Day (13th January). The tradition goes back as far as the 14th century and decrees that punishments for offences committed over Christmas were twice the usual. Many towns have started to read their own Christmas Peace declarations, but in Finland old texts are known to have survived at least in Turku, Porvoo and Tammisaari.

Porvoo’s Declaration of Christmas Peace “As now the blessed time of Christmas is with us, when all Christendom remembers and celebrates the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we hereby, according to the old and praiseworthy practice, declare the season called Christmas Peace, by which let it be understood that each and every citizen shall prepare in all godliness for this same high feast and spend and celebrate it in a Christian manner. Thus we urge the burghers of this town to observe in all things a good and Christian way of life, refraining from gluttony, unseemly drinking and inebriation and other forms of unruly conduct and conceit. Any person who should dare to offend against this declaration will be punished as an example to others. Furthermore, let the burghers be reminded that, since it is the custom at the time of this feast, to spread straw on the floor of buildings, they shall take the utmost care with fire, so as to avoid damage. Otherwise, we wish every citizen, jointly and singly, a blessed Christmas feast and following that a joyous New Year.” Porvoo Magistrates’ Court, on the 19th day of December 1663.

Children love Porvoo’s old cobbled streets, and in Old Porvoo there are a fantastic number of places to explore. The Maari Bay parkland area offers an ideal setting for a family picnic and only a stone’s throw away is Linnamäki, Castle Hill, which is one of the biggest and most impressive ancient monuments in Uusimaa province. On Linnamäki it is easy to let your imagination wander among the many moats, paths and bridges of the ancient fortress. The Doll and Toy Museum in Old Porvoo often sets adults reminiscing about their childhood, and these are stories children and grandchildren love to hear. The Kungsbacka Domestic Animal Farm in the village of Ilola gives children a unique opportunity to watch and learn about farmyard animals. On the way to Kungsbacka you will find the delightful Noark Miniature World, which will be a memorable experience for children and adults alike. With the help of small-scale models, Noark offers you a fascinating journey around the world.

Porvoo for Children

At HopLop indoor adventure park you can crawl through tunnels, jump around in bouncy castles and climb up climbing walls. There is plenty of fun for children of all ages and the young at heart. The children’s playgrounds, for example at Ruusupuisto Park on Laivurinkatu Street and Keskuspuisto Park on Kaivokatu Street, are favourites with active youngsters. The minigolf course on Rantakatu Street will provide challenges for older children, too. In summer a ride on a museum railcar or old-time steam engine is an exciting experience, and a cruise in the beautiful archipelago of Porvoo will be fun for children, too.

Let the islands enchant you! Porvoo’s idyllic archipelago is worth visiting. The breathtaking scenery and excellent guest harbours extend a warm welcome to yachters and boaters, but you can also experience the unique milieu of the islands without a boat of your own and from dry land as well.

The official guest marinas are in the centre of Porvoo at Jokiranta and in Pellinki at Sandholmsudden, with visitor harbours at Tirmo and Hamari. There are many jetties where you can moor in the archipelago (see www.uudenmaanvirkistysalueyhdistys.fi).For more information on services in the archipelago, see also www.pellinge.net. Even without your own boat you can sail from Porvoo, for example, on the Saaristolinja boats m/s Fredrika or m/s Sandra D and the Royal Line’s m/s RoyalCat (departure and return to the passenger harbour). The charming old bargass Borgå cruises on the river and offers panoramic views of Old Porvoo (see p. 29). You can always rent a boat, too, and the water taxis are an excellent choice for small groups.

Gone fishing! To obtain a fishing permit in Finland there are two fees to be paid by adults: the state fishing management fee and the fee for permission from the owner of the water area (in Porvoo this is mainly the lure fishing fee for the Southern Finland region). Not far from Porvoo centre you can fish at Kokonniemi (at the end of Kokonniementie road) and at the bridges leading to Sikosaari. For hook and line angling or ice fishing no separate permit is needed. For more information see: www.ahven.net

The six-storey tower is octagonal in shape and the beacon at the top stands out against the sky almost 40 metres above sea level. It also offers a unique setting for various functions, meetings and courses. For more information, see www.soderskar.fi

Porvoo is a town of bakeries, redolent with the scent of baking bread, local cakes and pastries like Runeberg’s cakes. History comes alive in gastronomical delights – whether you order a banquet fit for a king or a menu reminiscent of the Diet of Porvoo. In Porvoo there was one high-quality cellar-restaurant in the late 18th century. In addition, the town had one inn for every 30 inhabitants. In a town of a couple of thousand inhabitants this was considered detrimental to decency and law and order. Coffee houses became more common and they drew customers away from the inns. Beer and wine were replaced by more healthy beverages. However, the state was not happy to see money flowing out of the country for the purchase of coffee beans. The drinking of coffee was prohibited three times, the last time in 1799. So-called “coffee-sniffers” made rounds of inspection, confiscations and denunciations... However, the prohibition of coffee failed because of the impossibility of supervising it and the culture of coffee drinking once again began to flourish. In the 19th century the Porvoo restaurants and coffee houses were popular destinations for pleasure outings from Helsinki.

Porvoo – a foodlovers’ paradise!

The fish dishes of the coastal region, Baltic herring and salmon, are favourites with the people of the Porvoo region. Fish soup in fact plays an important role in the history of Porvoo; it was, after all, the cooking of a fish soup that started the Fire of Porvoo (1760).

Restaurant Wanha Laamanni Right in the heart of Old Porvoo, next to the Cathedral, stands an idyllic 18th century log building, where the renowned restaurant Wanha Laamanni has operated for more than 30 years. The restaurant seats 70 and offers both Finnish and international cuisine in a historic milieu in the style typical of the reign of King Gustav III of Sweden. To accompany the meal, choose a wine from Wanha Laamanni’s extensive winelist. The restaurant’s beautiful interior is on two floors, both of which have a cosy log fire in winter. From the terrace, which seats 80, looking over the roofs of Old Porvoo, you have a fine view of the river.

Runeberg´s cakes The cakes named after J.L. Runeberg were developed by a Porvoo baker and confectioner who lived during the national poet’s lifetime, from cakes that the poet is said to have enjoyed for breakfast. Later on the people of Porvoo began to call them Runeberg’s cakes, and they are still sold in Porvoo cafés today. According to an often told story, the cakes were invented by the poet’s wife Fredrika, who is known to have made cakes from flour, breadcrumbs, biscuit crumbs and almonds, decorated with apple jam and icing. The story goes that Runeberg had a sweet tooth and asked his wife for something sweet, but there was nothing in the cupboard. So Fredrika decided to make cakes from the ingredients she had. The recipe is found in Fredrika Runeberg’s recipe book from the 1850s, but it is probably adapted from a recipe for the cakes created by Porvoo baker Lars Astenius in the 1840s. There are numerous versions of the recipe for Runeberg’s cakes. Here is one example that’s worth trying!

Runeberg’s cakes (6 cakes) 100 g butter/margarine 1 dl fine granulated sugar 1 egg 50 g finely chopped almonds 1 ½ dl breadcrumbs 1½ dl white flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp cardamom 1 dl whipping cream raspberry jam icing sugar water, lemon or orange juice punch Cream the softened margarine and sugar. Beat in the egg. Mix the dry ingredients and add to the batter. Mix in the cream and if desired a little punch. Grease a muffin tin and pour the batter into the moulds. Bake at 200° C for about 20 minutes. Make a thick paste from water and icing sugar. Squeeze the icing in a ring round a blob of raspberry jam. Recipe from Culinary Porvoo (2009)
