“To be, or not to be, that is the question.” William Shakespeare I’ve always liked that quote and never quite got its full meaning. I’m not saying I have it now; these days I love the vibe of coming at things from a place of not knowing. Human being, human doing. Being is definitely the lesser of the two in our society right now; people gravitate towards the doing a lot more. From the foundation of being, the doing can become effortless. I invite you to approach this issue from that place, don’t do anything, don’t even read it... YET. Just be with it and see what rolls. Then when you read it, read from that place too, like a human just simply BEING. BE, until next time paul congdon, Publisher

Joy can be a negative emotion if you’re not letting yourself feel joy when it comes (maybe because you’re so used to the opposite). Allow emotions to transform and teach you.

positively newsworthy GOOD NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. POSITIVELIFE.IE

1 Plastics Potential LOCAL SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL PROBLEMS. by Alison McEvoy

There are so many ways to interact with the ‘challenges’ the world is encountering. What I love most about the ‘zero heroes’ who are emerging in response to pollution and excess waste production, is their ingenious creativity. These people, who wish to create a world in which there is zero wastage, have come up with some of the most pioneering and novel ideas around. Take the Recycled Island Foundation for example. They have recently launched the world’s first floating, recycled park on the Maas River in Rotterdam. The students of Rotterdam University joined in and pioneered the idea of the floating hexagonal building

blocks which form the basis of the floating landscape. On top of these is packed all the plastics which the foundation has retrieved using litter traps from the river and, similar to a roof garden, upon these is planted all kinds of greenery, from moss to small trees, and plenty of native plant species. Not only does the park soften the river’s edge through creating a buffer of green, it also provides a nesting and breeding place for marine life below the water’s surface and bird and insect life above. These kinds of initiatives clearly show us that ‘waste’ need not be wasted, that there is value in every material that

“waste need not be wasted…if we engage our creativity and problem solving, we can discover new value in what was previously discarded.” exists, in whatever form it exists, and, if we engage our creativity and problem solving, we can discover new value in what was previously discarded. The foundation are now looking for new cities and locations to continue their mission! Recycledpark.com

2 A Devoted Dog BRAVE PUP SAVES THE DAY. by Aisling Cronin

“Todd was honoured in style at a Diamondbacks football game.” Dogs are true heroes in so many ways – bringing comfort, love and solace to grateful humans all over the globe – but their heroism is never more evident on those astounding occasions when they save their humans from serious injury or even death. This summer, Paula Godwin – a resident of Arizona in the U.S. – was spared a shocking ordeal thanks to the courage of her own dog, a sweet golden retriever named Todd. She, Todd, and the other canines of the household were out on a walk one day in June, when their stroll was interrupted by a not-sowelcome visitor: a rattlesnake. “It was a carefree, beautiful morning,” Paula recalled, “but as we were walking down the hill, I literally almost stepped on

a rattlesnake. My hero of a puppy, Todd, saved me. He jumped right in front of my leg, where I surely would have been bitten.” Todd was left with a number of injuries as a result of the snake bite, but he made a speedy recovery thanks to the veterinary care he received. He was later honoured in style at a Diamondbacks American football game, where the crowd were thrilled to see him. Paula is deeply grateful to him for saving her from what could have been a deeply painful or even lethal experience. “This is what a hero looks like,” she declared. “Please say a prayer for my sweet hero.”

3 Lord of the Books BIN MAN BUILDS FREE LIBRARY. by Aisling Cronin Twenty years ago, Jose Alberto Gutierrez – a waste collector living in Bogotá, Colombia – found a copy of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina that had been thrown out in one of the wealthier areas of Bogotá. He decided to rescue the book from the rubbish, and thus began his passion for salvaging high-quality books from the waste system and offering them for free to Colombians in need. Gutierrez has now collected over 20,000 books, spanning a wide range of genres. These books form his free library service, Fundación La Fuerza de las Palabras (Strength of Words Foundation), located in his home in South Bogóta. Gutierrez keeps children’s books, classic novels by authors like Margaret Mitchell, Mario Vargas Llosa, and fellow Colombian Gabriel García Márquez, as well as textbooks covering subjects such as

science, business and medicine, to name just a few. The library is open to community children at weekends, and Gutierrez and his wife ship books to other communities in need all over Colombia. Their books have reached over 450 territories in the country. Gutierrez has become affectionately known as ‘the lord of the books’ in his neighbourhood. As he puts it: “In an area that lacks access to many resources, a book becomes a symbol of hope. Listen, if humans treated each other as they do in many of the books that I’ve read, this planet would be governed only by love.”

“In an area that lacks access to many resources, a book becomes a symbol of hope.”

positively newsworthy the little things 1 The little things FOOD AND GRA-TI-TUDE. by Alison McEvoy I’ve taken to arriving a few minutes early to work – just enough time to ogle the puffy, sweet yet undoubtedly healthy delights in the Bread Naturally bakery next door. The oat, seed, banana and date filled flapjacks are my current craze – palm-sized squares of tender sweetness, glazed with a dark chocolate topping.

“…each one of us felt this little surge of goodfeeling just knowing that kind acts are enacted on our little stretch of street.” There was a week at the beginning of the craze, when the flapjacks were just beginning to entrap my taste buds in their mesh of enchantment, when they disappeared from the shelf. I was told to come back on Friday but when the eagerly awaited Friday arrived, they still weren’t there. I was constantly checking in like the proverbial child in the backseat of the car, asking, “are we there yet?”

8

The baker himself came to explain to me how long it actually takes to cut the flapjacks into squares, and, most importantly, to get the chocolate glazing just right. Apparently he is the only one of his team who has mastered the art of it. Last week, when I came to collect my treasures, to my dismay I realised I had forgotten my purse. After a moment of confusion and, I have to admit, of desperation, the baker told me I could pay next time I was in. It was amazing the gratitude I felt in that moment. I shared the story with colleagues and the glow continued to shine, as each one of us felt this little surge of good-feeling just knowing that kind acts are enacted on our little stretch of street.

2 Unshrouding the Mystery THE GIFTS OF MARY MAGDALENE. by Aisling Cronin Mary Magdalene is an enigmatic figure. Her pivotal role in Jesus’ life and work has been shrouded in secrecy, with the Bible offering scant information. Much is unknowable: lost to the mists

of time, or – to offer a more prosaic example – destroyed by the numerous library sackings and book burnings that accompanied the medieval era. I was born on July 22nd – Mary Magdalene’s feast day – and although I have long since grown weary of the narratives put forward in traditional Church doctrine, I’ve always wanted to know more about her. This year, my parents gifted me with a place on a Mary Magdalene workshop offered by Amanda Ellis, one of my favourite spiritual teachers … and I was over the moon! Off I went to the beautiful Chalice Well near Glastonbury, to experience a day of being immersed within the energy of Mary Magdalene. Through our intuitive efforts to understand what she wished to impart to us, we pictured her as a strong, powerfully protective and compassionate woman, standing alongside Jesus as an equal. She spoke to us of sisterhood, of solidarity, of being prepared to stand up and reclaim our truth. Everyone who attended the Mary

“We pictured her as a strong, powerfully protective and compassionate woman, standing alongside Jesus as an equal.” Magdalene workshop was a woman – not by design, but simply because, for whatever reason, only women happened to book places on it. As a result, the workshop turned into an amazing time of opening our minds and hearts to the feminine energies in particular (whilst still honouring those parts of ourselves that resonated more with the masculine energies): a time of learning more about the many gifts that we, as women, have to offer the world. In truth, I am still digesting the experience, and I know that its reverberations will linger in my heart and mind for a long time to come.

spirituality & the city THE BONDS OF LOVE Liz Lynch & Ciara O’Neill - Couple Liz: It is hard to put into words how I feel about this wonderful woman. She is full of life, love and laughter. Ciara and I share a quirky sense of humour and I know that with her, I can always be fully myself, no matter how silly that is. Ciara has great empathy for other people’s worries. I am lucky that she has made it her mission in life to take care of me. Ever since I started dating Ciara, I have felt enveloped by her boundless love and I hope she feels the same from me. Ciara is very modest and doesn’t seem to know how wonderful she is. Her smile lights up a room and her laughter is infectious. I feel blessed every day knowing she is my wife.

Martin & Magda Janik - Couple Martin: Magda is my soulmate. I know it isn’t our first life together: we have loved each other many times before. Her calmness, her beauty, her love and the amazingly multi-dimensional depth of her being makes each life so worth living. I had a dream about Magda after I saw her for the first or second time, and after that dream, I knew she was the one. We were 16 and 17 at that time. This year was our 25th anniversary of being a couple and our 20th wedding anniversary. Magda stands by me during our happiest and most challenging moments and I love her to bits. She is an amazing mum to our daughter Pola, who we both absolutely adore. Magda: I love Martin - my husband and my best friend. Martin is warm, loving, kind and funny. He has a great passion for life and energy that always amazes me. He is intelligent, creative and always eager to learn and experience new things, which makes our journey together very interesting. We always know what each other is thinking without saying a single

word. Martin makes me feel loved every day and I love him for that. He is also a fantastic father to our daughter Pola, who adores him.

‘I had a dream about Magda, and after that dream, I knew she was the one.’ (Martin) This year is very special for us as we are celebrating 25 years together and the 20th anniversary of our wedding. I am grateful for each of those years and excited about all the years to come.

Ciara: My wedding day was the happiest day of my life. I am so grateful to everybody who campaigned for marriage equality, and of course the wonderful Irish people who voted yes to love on that magical day in May 2015. What I love most about Liz is her caring and compassionate nature. There is nothing she wouldn’t do for the people she loves. Liz is the funniest person I have ever met and she makes me laugh every day. Meeting Liz is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She is my best friend and favourite person in the whole world. I know that she believes in me and loves me unconditionally, and that is the best feeling in the world.

Dave Weakley & Sara Weis - Father and Daughter Sara: My dad is a great person - very kind, hilariously funny and super talented as well. He is a wonderful human being. Because we both work in the field of music, we have a lot in common. I’ve learned a huge amount from him. His advice is very valuable to me. Music is such a difficult profession, it’s great to have people around you who understand that and who can be supportive. Both of my parents are hugely supportive – they both work in the arts – and they are wonderful. My dad is my inspiration. We have great craic together, and he’s just the best dad I could ever have asked for. His experience of getting out there and putting himself before an audience taught me how to be brave. Dave: Sara is so talented. From a very early age, she always showed promise and excellence at singing and acting, and this promise has really borne fruit over the last few months. She recently began to put herself out there and start singing … and she is absolutely marvellous. I could go on forever about my tremendous admiration for her! I’m incredibly proud of her. I know parents are supposed to be the role model for their children, but she is more of a role model for me. I’m a musician myself, and I derive a lot of joy from listening to her and watching her while she is performing.

Livia Devi & Carolyne Marks - Friends Livia: Carolyne and I share a sacred space of beautiful heart-connection, love, joy, respect and appreciation. Her wisdom and life experience always guide me on my path. Her teachings about love, life and relationships have helped me to grow and evolve. We always have so much fun and laughter when we meet, enjoying life to the full! Her presence in my life is a like a warm ocean breeze on a summer day. The stillness, flow and richness of our connection is so cherished! I am truly honoured and grateful to have you as a friend, Carolyne. Carolyne: My name is Carolyne and I am very fortunate! Why? I have a beautiful friend and her name is Livia. Yes, she is physically beautiful, no doubt about that: however, what I am referring to with the word ‘beautiful’ goes far beyond that superficial perspective. You see, as within, so without. My friend is beautiful in Soul. When we are together, there is simply harmony, peace and so much joy. At times, we have very deep, fulfilling and meaningful conversations and I love to grow with her this way, as well as simply sitting in silence and connecting on a very different level at other times. When out and about, we like similar things, laugh about the same nonsense and appreciate the world and nature with all our hearts. Being able to share this love of life with someone is a great treasure and a special gift.

POSITIVE PARENTING

healing the hidden triggers WHY CHILDREN PUSH YOUR BUTTONS, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. by Anna Cole Parenting isn’t easy! Some days start with one child sitting defiantly on the floor, refusing to put on their shoes, with another grumpy, prickly and ignoring the dishwasher she’s been asked to empty. We’re bristling before breakfast is over, and things go downhill from here. When we’re upset and stressed the fun drains out of parenting, to say the least. Even our sense that our children are dear to us disappears. Every single one of us grapples with tough days as we do our best to be good parents. Why do we struggle so hard in parenting? Because, let’s face it, despite reading about peaceful and positive parenting, we do struggle hard some days. In the heat of the moment, we act in ways that we are less than proud of. Unconsciously, our own memories of past hurts are wrenched back into the here and now. This kind of triggering is ubiquitous for parents and stems from events or bad times at different ages and stages of our own childhoods which left us hurt.

When we act in ways we wished we hadn’t, the quiet, and not so quiet, whispers of times gone by which have left a mark, a wound, and a rigidity in us, have an effect on the day-to-day of parenting. We plaster them over to get by, as likely no one could listen to them when we were young. We learn to ignore them and attempt to stride, positively, into each parenting day. But here’s the rub: the wonder and the intensity of parenting is that, as much as we’d like to avoid it, ‘out of sight, out of mind’ parenting has an uncanny, almost precision ability to bring up these hidden triggers - often and many times! After some years of working on my own hidden triggers around parenting I have learnt to think of them as mirrors of opportunity. They invite healing and growth, if we can get the support we need. As the autumn nights draw in and we head towards the ‘dark half of the year’ as the ancient Celts called it, we’re offering you a remarkable and rare opportunity to come learn a practice for releasing your parenting triggers with a couple of ‘masters’ - well - ‘mistresses’ of the art of healing our parenting triggers. For one

Join us for a welcoming and intimate evening and take home practical tools which will transform your parenting days - and nights - and help make your peaceful parenting dreams a reality. Come ready to practice. We’ll share perspective and practical ideas based on more than a combined couple of decades of our own experience, along with our training in Hand in Hand Parenting. We guarantee that this will make things go more easily in your parenting journey. You’ve read the books, you know the theory, right? You know how you want it to look but you just keep losing it with your kids when they wake at 5am every morning, or refuse to go to sleep overnight, or (insert here!)… You know the WHAT! Let us show you the HOW! Come ready to laugh, talk and have some fun on this often bumpy, and less than perfect, journey of parenting.

love and death STAYING ANCHORED IN LOVE.

by Dee Wallace Those are the two topics which seem to be permeating the energy right now. Let’s talk about love first. My beloved older brother, Dennis, was visiting the last two weeks. Through all the trials and instability of our childhoods, Denny was my rock. Throughout his life, he was voted one of the country’s top young men to succeed, became a minister, worked for President Nixon, created several businesses and raised three amazing children. He also took dreadful care of himself, resulting in strokes, heart attacks and brain damage. He lost his business. He lost his house. At 75, he looks older than he should, and is depressed about his losses. His visit reminded me of what my mother, saint of love, taught me about my aunt, a recovering, cranky alcoholic, when she was riddled with cancer. As a young adult I was often disgusted at her incapacity to conduct herself with dignity.

“[Death] is a challenge for those ‘left behind’ to move on, live in love, and experience the rest of life with joyful creation.”

My mother took me aside quietly, looked deep into my eyes, and said: “You didn’t know your Auntie Lee when she was the first to graduate college in the family, or the first to be a successful businesswoman, or the myriad of times she paid our rent, or supported me when daddy was so sick, or helped take care of you kids financially. She is important to me, D.D. She is my sister, and I love her.

We don’t stop loving people because they lose their way, or get old, or get sick, or can’t live with as much dignity. We love people because that is the right thing to do. No matter what. And we remember them for who they truly are, and the vibrant people they have been.”

DEATH I have experienced so much death in my life. It is never easy. No one expects it to be. But the channel wants to give us all some insight and comfort about this. 1) No one leaves without choice. You’ll never understand it, but you can have peace in accepting it. 2) Your loved one’s energy is always available to you. Talk to them. And LISTEN and feel their response. As with everything, you must ask for them to touch you with their presence. 3) Trust yourself to connect. It is easy. 4) You may be given pictures, or memories or emotions. Know that those are all forms of communication. 5) Move into a place of joy and acceptance and love as quickly as you can. It helps free their energy to connect with you. 6) Remember, you are the power and the love that chooses to create this connection. Embrace it and celebrate it when you are ready.

Death is a birthday for those who leave. It is a challenge for those ‘left behind’ to move on, live in love and experience the rest of life with joyful creation. Yes, it can be hard....until there is a choice made to embrace it. Honour your loved ones by living life to the fullest. They want it that way. xo Blessings, Dee Love’s stronger than fear and death. Steve Hackett Love has no age, no limit; and no death. John Galsworthy Dee Wallace has worked as an author, teacher, dancer and actress in film, television and the stage for over 30 years (E.T., Cujo. The Howling). Her book, Bright Light, tells that tale and shares the spiritual lessons she has learned from a life of acting. iamdeewallace.com

self-love SMALL GESTURES. by Amanda Collins

John Lennon quipped, “Love is the Answer. What was the Question?” He was so right then, and when he sang, “All you need is Love.” From the second you were born you were completely connected to unconditional love. Over time, you may have had experiences - with family, teachers, society - which took you away from knowing that you are pure love. If you internalised those messages, you may be manifesting shame, blame or judgments about yourself and others. It’s time to remember, reconnect, reawaken to the knowledge that you are pure love and deserve to be loved unconditionally by yourself and others. In one of my favourite books, Power versus Force by John Hawkins, a vibration chart shows that when we feel grief, shame and fear, we are in the low vibrations, but when we come into self-acceptance, our vibration and frequency soar. Knowing that everything is energy, and that where energy goes, energy flows, the more we align with love, the better our thoughts, experiences and relationships become. The journey to self-love has to start with self-compassion and being kind to yourself, just as you would be to a dear friend. When you notice yourself being unkind to yourself, notice what is

happening. Perhaps you can put your hand on your heart, feel your heart beating and bring yourself away from fear and blame, back into love. Be kind when you look at your body in the mirror. Set realistic goals for yourself. Give yourself permission to be human; imperfect. When you make a mistake, do not beat yourself up. Learn instead, but without any mean self-talk, guilt or shame. Each night before going to bed, forgive yourself and others. Perhaps list three things that you love about yourself and that you are grateful for. Invite lots of play into your life. Give yourself lots of self-care. Surround yourself with people who inspire, love and accept you. The more you come into alignment with yourself, the more of these relationships you will have in your life. Self-love means having good boundaries and saying “yes” to experiences we truly want to have and saying “no” to things we really do not want to do. Peoplepleasing rarely brings us love and joy, so there is no need to seek approval, answers and love from outside of yourself. You do not have to wait for physical touch from another. You have healing hands. Even a salt bath is nurturing. Rest when you need to, cry when you want to. Be comfortable to ask for what you need from family and friends.

Do not make the mistake of postponing self-love by saying “I will love myself when I am slimmer, when I am richer, when I am… (Fill in the dots).” Accept and love yourself now. We are all one and what connects us all is not only our pain, but also our joy and love. So do not compare yourself and your life to another’s.

Here is a daily ritual to cultivate self-love: Stand in front of the mirror and look into your eyes - they are the windows to your soul. Say the following words with complete conviction; “I LOVE YOU!” Notice how you feel in your body. If you feel tightness in your throat, tummy, or anywhere else, place your healing hands there. If this gesture feels uncomfortable, I invite you to do it even more! See yourself as a child and give yourself love. And speak to yourself with kindness – always. amandacollins.com internationalfengshuischool.com

POSITIVE PE ACE

peaceful present EMBRACE THE REALITY OF THE NOW. Sandy Newbigging When you leave the present moment to start thinking about the past or future, you almost immediately begin to feel whatever you are thinking about. If, for example, you are thinking about a sad past event, then that is how you will feel. Or if you are dwelling on a time when you felt hurt, again, that is how you will end up feeling. On the other hand, if you give your undivided attention to the here and now, you immediately stop ‘feeling your thinking’ and naturally experience more peace, as you are no longer doing anything that prevents you from experiencing it.

Your Side of the Fence Over the years, I’ve observed a collectively held belief within the population: “How I feel is their fault.” Meaning: what someone else said or didn’t say, or what they did or didn’t do, are the cause of my lack of inner peace or love. This is the not necessarily the case. Now I appreciate if, for example, someone is in your face, you may well feel something ‘negative’ in that moment. I’m referring here to the rest of the time, when the moment has passed, but you are still feeling bad. If we eliminated the hurt, sadness, or anger brought on by thinking about the past or future, then we would experience a life-changing amount of peace during daily life. We stop suffering unnecessarily due to the false belief that “I feel X because of them.” We can protect our peace by thinking less and living more in the now.

18

Your Real and Imagined Life One way of staying in the peaceful place of now is to recognise that there is a big difference between your Real Life and your Imagined Life. Your Real Life is whatever is happening right now and your Imagined Life is everything else. Yes, everything else! Now, to really get what I’m saying, you must be willing to see that, although it may appear that your life circumstances are happening now, they are not. Right now you are reading this article, for example. Everything beyond the immediate moment happens only in your mind and imagination. The more you can remain attentive to your Real Life, the less of a big deal your Imagined Life is, ever.

“We can protect our peace by thinking less and living more in the now.” The Makings of a Movie Classic With a regular meditation practice, you dwell on the past less. However, by aiming to live in the moment, it doesn’t mean you are not allowed to talk about the past. We

just do so without leaving the moment and recall past memories as you would any entertaining story, let’s say, a great movie. Even if a movie contains drama, disappointments or cliffhangers, you can enjoy it because deep down you know it is ‘just a story’ and isn’t happening in the reality of now. Movies often have suspense, ups and downs, twists and turns, and things don’t always go according to the characters’ plan, but you stick with them until they come out the other side, victorious. This is your chance to come out of the other side and prosper over past events that may have gotten you down. raymond cadwell EVER HEARD OF APPLIED BIOMAGNETIC THERAPY?.

By Alison McEvoy

Having witnessed Raymond in action, and received a session of my own, I found myself drawn to Raymond’s method of Applied Biomagnetic Pair Therapy. For the following five weeks I went to Raymond and the experience unfolded as follows... Are there microbes out of balance?

Is there a trauma involved?

Through observing how the body contracts, Raymond garnered the answer to this, his initial line of inquiry. He questioned and questioned, and my body responded through muscle contractions, leading him to be able to tell me the exact type of microbe present. Then, he applied a pair of magnets to my body to neutralise the microbial presence, enabling it to exist in balance. The physical crux of the matter was that my body was not sufficiently absorbing the nutrients from the carefully selected, mostly organic, and well thought out meals I was preparing for myself each day. There was a moment of true disheartenment when I heard this. My efforts to take care of my body were being foiled by something I couldn’t fathom happening under my skin – the presence of microbes which had taken up home in my weak spots. My world view was continuously challenged and widened during the weeks receiving treatment from and chatting with Raymond. For one, I began to realise that microbes are present in us all and that they are not an enemy to be eradicated but rather, together with unhealed traumas, are only potential causes of imbalance and disease in the body.

This is Raymond’s second line of investigation as he endeavours to get to the root of the issue on all levels. When we have experiences beyond our powers of mental-emotional comprehension and integration (namely, traumas), our body responds to help us to contain our overwhelm in order to survive. Subconscious programs arise to handle, for the time being, what cannot be consciously dealt with. These programs are beneficial in the short term. Long term however, the places in our bodies which have borne the weight of this trauma become our weak spots. For many of us, this spot can be the parts of the body to do with ingesting and metabolising food.

“the treatments have been incredibly informative, enlightening and powerful” If there is trauma involved, Raymond again questions and listens to the body through muscle testing to find out the exact type of trauma involved, right down to the date, time and feelings experienced. He then places you in a light trance to release and reprogram the body.

In this way the body’s weak spots become strong and functioning once more. These traumas can appear to be very slight experiences to our adult-self. However, many of our traumas originate in childhood, an extremely vulnerable and sensitive time of life when we can easily become overwhelmed.

Is there anything ancestral involved? Is there an illness of the soul? These are the next two lines of inquiry where Raymond ventures towards the root cause, making this modality a really deep process of healing. At the moment there are few practitioners in Ireland and he intends to remedy this by offering a practitioner training programme so that this method, this modality of deep inquiry, can reach more people. In the wake of my weeks of treatment I felt myself slowly but steadily growing stronger, starting from deep inside my tissues. I am still in the process of regaining my full strength, however. For me, the treatments have been incredibly informative, enlightening and powerful on mental-emotional levels, and the physical is also on its way. For more about Raymond see: Biomagnetism.ie

roadmap to

TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY. By Alison McEvoy

Lloyd Chambers is a personal development coach, alternative businessman and author of paperback book and online course entitled ‘Visualisation to Realisation: using your imagination to keep you on your path to success.’ YOU CAN Everything you have ever wanted or ever needed is locked up inside your infinite potential. Lloyd Chambers is here to tell you that you can create a Life by Design. Whatever you can believe you can achieve. PATH OF SELF-DETERMINATION Having had some mind-expanding schooling years at an institution where transcendental meditation was taught daily, Lloyd left school with high hopes and lofty dreams of success generated by doing what he loved. Nonetheless, years later, Lloyd found himself marching to the rhythm of the corporate world; a workday of 9am-5pm, with plenty of money but little sense of fulfilment. Rather than remaining stuck in this sense of unfulfillment and in the belief that this was the only way, Lloyd began to walk the path towards the freedom he enjoys to this day. FUEL FOR YOUR FREEDOM When I spoke to Lloyd he was on day 368 of his ‘500 Days of Personal Development Live’ Facebook project. In 500 days he intends to raise the vibration of one million people through daily talks where he shares openly about his journey towards living the life of his dreams.

His mantra is ‘step forward into growth or backwards into safety’ and each day is filled with tips and tools for making the journey. He speaks to the part of us wherein our true self lies, waiting to be seen, heard and acted upon, so that we live up to the full potential of our years on earth, lighting the way for what will come after.

“Step forward into growth or backwards into safety” FROM WITHIN TO WITHOUT Lloyd counsels that “we need to start stepping away from the logical approach to life.” He pursued this for many years but now he works from an intuitive place… “I feel my way into things and the world has become a very beautiful place.” Lloyd describes his method in detail of creating an inner, feeling-full image, which enables him to bring into creation the vision of reality his mind’s eye is holding firm; “[I] keep in my mind a picture of exactly what it is that I want, to the exclusion of everybody else’s opinion and my own internal efforts to sabotage

myself through a lack of belief and connect emotionally to the wish fulfilled… It’s a game that you have to play in order to keep the image of what you want on the Screen of your mind long enough for it to actually happen, remembering that feeling is the secret.” FOUNDATIONS OF FREEDOM In all that he does his aim is to “help people with their health, their mind and…to help them to understand a different way of wealth creation. After all, there is an abundance of plenty for everybody.” When he came across Organo and experienced the health benefits of its key ingredient, ganoderma, he decided that this product was to become part of his path to freedom. Ganoderma is more widely known by its Japanese name - the red reishi mushroom. This mushroom is the most highly-prized healing herb in Chinese medicine. So much so that it was originally kept for use only by the Imperial families and was given the nickname ‘King of herbs’. It ranks # 1 out of 50,000 edible plants on earth for healing the human body, making it unparalleled in the mushroom kingdom. With over 3,000 PubMed studies proving efficacy against over twenty serious conditions, and with no interactions with

POSITIVE RE TRE AT

a

beacon of bliss TOTAL RELAXATION AT CREACON LODGE.

by Tara Congdon

24

I recently had the enormous pleasure of taking a trip to Creacon Wellness Retreat. Creacon is cosily nestled a stone’s throw from New Ross in Co. Wexford. On entering the little driveway, a cute Buddha welcomed me with a smile from the garden, and as I parked, my eye was drawn to a sign that said, “It’s a wonderful life.” My usual frantic adrenalin immediately began to settle itself. I tumbled out of my car and into reception, passing sweet chimes on my way, setting the tone for my adventure. An aside – bags hanging out of me and arriving late, just a few minutes before dinner, I was distracted from the fact that my top had pretty much come undone and so I stood in front of Veronica, the receptionist (decorated receptionist, I might add: Veronica won the 2017 Receptionist of the year award) in my bra – I have to say I would highly recommend it as an icebreaker because it gave us a great belly laugh and we were solid buds from then on. From the minute I saw my beautiful bedroom, named Hawthorn, and my big cosy double bed, all of my busy world faded away and I was completely enchanted by the place. There is Anespa Alkaline mineral ion water in the bathrooms – it helps relax the entire body, helps improve dry skin, poor circulation, eczema, insomnia, stiffness, fatigue, rheumatism and much more. Creacon serves Kangen water, which is alkaline water. Some of its benefits include: relief of IBS and acid reflux, lowering of blood pressure and blood sugar, and alleviation of stress and anxiety. At dinner, I was served up the most delicious menu of nutritious, wholesome and healthy food – homemade marinated salmon served with basil mousse and garlic crostini, followed by a vegetarian ragu and polenta. Later, I had some chamomile tea with cookies in the heart room. The café has recently opened up daily to the public too. The chef is Gaetano Pernagallo,

who believes “food is medicine.” The benefits of each dish are listed on the menus. Something I really liked is how everyone seems to gravitate together for meal times – including the staff – and it’s like chowing down with your family. It’s warm, with lots of storytelling and great craic too. Some of the other lovely treats I discovered

“All of my busy world faded away and I was completely enchanted by the place.” during my stay at Creacon were the bijou conservatory area for quiet time and meditative colouring, the yoga/meditation room equipped with cushions and cosy mats, the relaxing heart room, sometimes showing an inspirational film, and the upstairs yellow room with the most snug couches. There is a daily opt in/out schedule, including things like Five Tibetan yoga, Gentle Hatha Yoga, Japa Meditation Class, Mandala Class … there really is something for everyone! If you wish, you can book a consultation or private session. Everything is put together so carefully to nurture and love its guests. Nothing is missed. I am blessed to have had this experience. If I was to put my finger on one stand-out from my stay, it was, without a doubt, the people: staff and guests. Funny, witty, warm, honest, down to earth people – I immediately felt like part of the family … and I just felt completely at home. Creacon is a blissful place!

POSITIVE TANTR A

the art of

assertiveness WHEN TO SAY YES AND HOW TO SAY NO. by Dawn Cartwright

26

According to researchers at Cornell University, we make 35,000 conscious decisions each day. That’s thirty-five thousand opportunities every single day to move closer to, or farther away from, our dreams. Our decisions create our future. The clearer we are about when to say ‘yes’ and how to say ‘no’, the more likely we are to be true to ourselves and create a life that reflects who we are. In a world where there’s pressure to conform and fit in, decisions are often made based on expectations, rather than the truth we feel inside. We lose ourselves. We slide into accommodating others because it seems easier. We avoid the less familiar emotions, and the closeness and bonding that comes from facing and working through them, to maintain an illusion of peace. We feel our true yes and our honest no and we second guess them, or push them aside. Yet we long to be intimate. We long to be accepted. We long to be loved as we truly are. How do we get in touch with our innermost feelings and thoughts? What does it mean to be someone who says ‘yes’ and ‘no’ honestly? How do we express ourselves truthfully, with kindness? How do we create a life filled with possibility, intimacy and freedom? How do we become who we are capable of being? In 1943 Abraham Maslow introduced Positive Psychology, the scientific study of the positive and elevating aspects of human behaviour. Maslow believed that every human being has a strong desire to realise their full potential, to be who they are capable of being. He created a model called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, providing a map to becoming who we truly are. This map is useful in our quest to know when to say yes and how to say no.

When To Say Yes • The Basics: Do you have shelter? Clothing? Food? Clean water? Are you meeting your sexual needs? If not, the stress of these unmet needs will interfere with your inner compass. Meet

these needs and you’ll create a strong foundation. You’ll begin to recognise when you’re saying ‘yes’ because you’re depleted, cold, tired, hungry, thirsty or sexually unfulfilled - and when you’re saying yes because yes is what you truly feel. • Safety: Our vigilant brain is the part of the brain that registers a threat and prompts us to say ‘yes’ to keep us from harm. Human beings have a natural desire for a predictable, orderly world. Having a daily routine like a morning walk or an evening meditation is a great way to create stability. Meet these needs and your ‘yes’ will be grounded in safety. • Belonging: Humans are tribal beings. The need for togetherness is probably one of the most important and least met needs in the world today. Create healthy friendships. Engage in group activities that are meaningful to you. Meet this need and your yes will no longer come from a fear of being abandoned. Instead, yes will boost your feeling of belonging. • Self-Esteem: A healthy sense of self is essential to being and becoming who we’re meant to be. When our self-esteem is low, we say ‘yes’ to gain approval. When self-esteem is high, we align with our core values no matter what. Know your core values, make a list. • The Peak: Be truly you. That’s when your yes to others matches the yes you feel inside.

How To Say No • The Basics: Fill your own cup. If you’ve had enough sleep, food, water and sex, chances are you’ll be more in touch with your natural generosity. You’ll be alert, relaxed, open and present. This in itself is a gift. Turn toward the person you’re saying no to, put both feet on the ground, relax your body, feel your generosity and say ‘no’.

“What does it mean to be someone who says ‘yes’ and ‘no’ honestly?” • Safety: Pace yourself. Create a pace in all your relationships that makes it possible for you to maintain connection with yourself and with the other. Create emotional stability and safety for yourself and this will translate as emotional stability and safety for the other when you say ‘no’. • Belonging: Be tribal. When we’re afraid to say no, we disappear and abandon the other person emotionally. Stay connected to your own heart. Stay emotionally connected to the other. Build a bridge of togetherness when you say ‘no’. • Self-Esteem: Share your values. Believe in yourself. Believe in the other person. You are resilient! They are resilient! Self-acceptance makes you trustable and compassionate. Open your heart, be respectful, say ‘no’. • The Peak: You are incredibly you. When you have fulfilled all your needs and you are consistently being and becoming who you are meant to be, your no is as positive as your yes.

marianne speaks WE INTERVIEW MARIANNE WILLIAMSON AHEAD OF HER DUBLIN TRIP. by Aisling Cronin

Marianne Williamson is one of the world’s most renowned spiritual teachers, authors and speakers. Seven out of her twelve published books have been New York Times bestsellers. One of her powerful statements in the classic A Return to Love – “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us” – has become a guiding light for spiritual seekers around the globe. When we asked her to summarise her extraordinary career, Marianne simply said, “If I’ve learned anything, it’s that life isn’t about the big dramatic moments that stand out, so much as it is about the consistent effort to live a better life. It’s up to us to make any one moment stand out, by standing tall within it.”

“Life isn’t about the big dramatic moments that stand out, so much as it is about the consistent effort to live a better life.”

Marianne will be speaking in Ireland on Wednesday 10th October 2018, from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. Ahead of what is sure to be an inspirational talk, we spoke to Marianne about her thoughts on Ireland, world politics, Aretha Franklin, and how the famed A Course in Miracles – a remarkable 1976 book written by Helen Schucman, who said that she channeled the words directly from Jesus – has touched her life. During your seminar in Dublin, you’re planning to talk about how we can learn how to transform our lives for the better, based on the insights you have gained from A Course in Miracles. We would love to know more about that subject. Have you had the opportunity to travel to many places in Ireland before, or are there any particular locations in the country that are special to you? One trip I took that remains with me is when I went to Knowth and Dowth. Extraordinary. What amazes me about Ireland is that, unlike most civilisations, it was as amazing in ancient times as in contemporary times. That’s not all that common, you know. Newgrange and James Joyce? Seriously. Not many countries can claim that kind of thing.

29

The world has heard a lot about Ireland recently, and I’m curious about your own transition from external emphasis on religious dogma to the internals of spiritual growth. Obviously there have been some tragic lessons learned, and hopefully the principles of A Course in Miracles can help to shed some light on your path ahead. People studying and teaching the Course in Ireland are doing tremendous work, and I just hope I can add to the conversation with whatever insight I’ve gleaned. The teachings within A Course in Miracles have been central to your life and work over the years. When did you first encounter this book, and what is the greatest gift that its teachings have given you? I first saw A Course in Miracles when I was in my mid-twenties. The greatest thing it has taught me is that the lesson to be learned is always my own: my own need to forgive, to rise to the occasion, to be kinder, to be more generous, to accept people as they are, to be less judgmental. There’s always a temptation to make the problem about other people, but the Course is adamant that the work is always on ourselves.

“Only a politics of love overrides a politics of fear.” This is a truly beautiful quote from your book Healing the Soul of America, and as the book celebrates its twentieth anniversary, that quote has never been more timely. What do you envisage when you speak of a ‘politics of love’? We all know what a politics of fear looks like – all we have to do is switch on our television or read the news online – but how do you envisage politicians, or indeed, ordinary people relating to each other when they come from a place of pure love? The same principles that guide us in our individual lives should guide our politics. If the point is to be a good person, then the point should be to be a good society. A good economy. And so forth. I think the economic principles that now organise our societies should be replaced by humanitarian ones. We’ve allowed money to become a false god, seen as the source of human happiness; but in fact, it’s the other way around. Money doesn’t create happiness so much as happiness creates money. When people are happy we’re naturally creative. We naturally manifest. A politics of love is one in which we see love as the bottom line, politically and economically as much as in our personal interactions. Politics is the work of our collective journey, and the effort to increase our compassion should be a political as well as a personal goal.

“The world has heard a lot about Ireland recently, and I’m curious about your own transition from religious dogma to spiritual growth.” Are you optimistic about the future of our world? Do you have hope that humanity, as a whole, can move away from its old, self-centred ways and learn how to live from a love-centred perspective? Hope is a moral imperative, so yes I have hope. But I also understand how evolution works. When a species’ behaviour becomes maladaptive for its survival, it will evolve or it will go extinct. And humanity’s collective behavioural patterns today are

definitely maladaptive; the survival of our civilisation as we know it is not guaranteed. As it says in A Course in Miracles, “There is a limit beyond which the Son of God cannot miscreate.” So these are sober and sobering times, but yes, I have hope. I believe in my gut we’re going to turn things around.

“The lesson to be learned is always my own: my own need to forgive, to rise to the occasion, to be kinder, to be more generous, to accept people as they are.” Your recent tribute to Aretha Franklin was deeply moving – you said that her music “was more than the music of my soul: she was in many ways the opener of my soul, a light on my path, a goddess who chanted what I could not chant and cooed what I could not coo and howled from the depths that I had not yet reached.” It’s not an accident that Aretha began singing in her church as a child. That connection between her spiritual roots and her musical expression is part of an age-old pattern, seen among all peoples at all times, that dates back to the earliest temple experiences. This is not just sociological data; it is a spiritual fact. God and sex came together in that woman like nothing before and nothing since. Even in her early 20s, she sang with the soulful wisdom of an ancient. She cried out from her amazing depths, and in so doing, delivered us to ours. She did for us what all great artists do: she reminded us of what is truly true, she viscerally realigned us with our deepest selves. We were incredibly blessed to have her among us in our lifetime. I have long believed that while many gifted artists, singers, musicians, or writers may not overtly describe themselves as ‘spiritual teachers’, their work nevertheless touches our souls in a way that is hard to explain. All great artists affect me that way. Art is spiritual and spirituality is an art. What great artist isn’t ‘channeling’, and what spiritual teacher isn’t creating something beautiful?

30 What is your advice to those who have just started to get in touch with the spiritual side of their being – people who could be described as ‘newly awakened’, or who have just begun to understand that there is more to life than materialism? Just know that forgiveness is the key to happiness. Whomever you haven’t forgiven, there’s your work. Once you know that, it becomes a full time job just monitoring all the crazy ways we judge and attack each other in our minds. What are your plans for the future? I know you are planning to release an online video course with Hay House, based on A Return to Love and your experiences with A Course in Miracles. Are there any further new books or other projects in the pipeline? I have an online class that will be coming out soon called Teaching The Teachers, specifically geared towards those who are healers, therapists, teachers or coaches. It’s time for me to start passing on some of the things that, as a teacher, I’ve learned along the way. I hope it’s helpful. The universe is asking all of us to step it up now. Anything any of us can do to help each other do that, feels to me like the thing that matters most. Marianne’s upcoming Irish seminar will take place on Wednesday 10th October 2018, from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. health boosting 32 nutrients REVOLUTIONARY STUDY GIVES HOPE FOR HEART HEALTH. by Aisling Cronin Pharma Nord is a nutritional supplement brand renowned for its revolutionary approach to nutritional support. Its high grade supplements are backed by rigorous scientific research, which documents their products’ safety and superior bio-availability (which, in laymen’s terms, refers to how easily absorbed they are). Pharma Nord’s research database contains over 9,000 scientific studies which serve to inform their impressive product development program. To date, more than 300 scientific studies involving Pharma Nord products have been published, one of the most striking being the KiSel-10 study, carried out in Sweden.

I spoke to Sinead Mitchell, Product Trainer for Healthcare Professionals at Pharma Nord, to learn more. “The KiSel-10 study was a five-year, placebocontrolled, randomised double-blind study,” Sinéad explained. “Two Pharma Nord products were used in the study: Q10 and Selenium. While there has been a lot of research done about the benefits of selenium for heart health, and the benefits of Q10 for heart health – when taken separately – there wasn’t a lot of research out there investigating the relationship between them, or the potential impact of their combination, which was the primary focus of the KiSel-10 research. The KiSel-10 trial was carried out in a small town in Sweden, with Swedish citizens who were aged 70 to 88. 443 participants took part, making it a very rigorous trial.’ The aim of the study was to observe

how Selenium and Q10, when taken together, would affect participants’ heart health. Participants were divided into two groups. One group were administered 200 milligrams of BioActive Q10 Gold every morning, combined with 200 micrograms of BioActive Selenium, while another placebo group did not receive either supplement. Once the five-year study was complete, the results amazed researchers: those receiving the Q10 and Selenium combination were shown to have

“These vital nutrients could have the power to unlock new potential for longevity and improved health.” a 54% reduced risk of mortality through cardiovascular disease. “In addition to the reduced risk of mortality measured by the KiSel-10 study over the five years, positive effects could also be seen in all of the inflammatory markers, which are used to measure heart health,” Sinéad revealed. “In fact, in many cases, the supplementation eased the inflammatory markers to a point lower than would be considered ‘normal’ for the participants’ age group, which is fantastically encouraging.” The KiSel-10 study is now referenced extensively in a number of leading health and scientific journals, including the European Journal For Clinical Nutrition.

An additional 14 further studies have since been pulled from the original KiSel-10 data, as health professionals seek to gather even more insight into the heart-protecting effects of long-term Selenium and Q10 supplementation. It has been known for decades that Q10 – particularly when consumed in the high grade form, ubiquinol – is a very powerful nutrient, so the KiSel-10 study results, demonstrating the immense impact of both Q10 and Selenium on heart health, are not all that surprising. Coenzyme Q10 (as it is formally known) is a natural, vitamin-like compound that all cells require in order to produce energy. Levels of this nutrient peak in our twenties and decline from that point onward. However, the discovery of coenzyme Q10 by American scientists in 1957, and the array of scientific studies done in the interim, has empowered us with a tool to potentially prevent this ‘energy drop’ from taking place. Selenium, too, has long been known for its incredible immune-boosting qualities. However it appears that these two nutrients have an even more powerful potential when used in combination. Based on the promising results of the KiSel-10 study, it seems that long-term consumption of these vital nutrients could have the power to unlock new potential for longevity and improved health. pharmanord.ie

5 features that identify an effective Q10 preparation

Scientifically documented effect

A cheap Q10 preparation may turn out to be expensive, if it has no effect. You will have wasted your money. However, if the effect can be documented with scientific research that is published in an esteemed science journal, you are guaranteed an effective and safe product.

Same quality as a medical drug Nutritional supplements are manufactured in compliance with food regulations. Contrary to medical drugs, supplements are not requested to document their effect. If a Q10 preparation is manufactured in compliance with pharmaceutical standards, the raw materials and manufacturing process are carefully monitored. Everything must be documented, just as it is the case with medicine.

Free from unabsorbable Q10 crystals Many Q10 preparations contain insoluble and unabsorbable Q10 crystals in oil. Such crystals can only dissolve when exposed to temperatures that are way above our body temperature. Pharma Nord has taken out a patent on a method that converts the crystals into “snowflakes” that dissolve rapidly at body temperature in the stomach. This guarantees effective absorption.

BioActive Q10 Gold from Pharma Nord is a safe choice. The preparation has been used in over 100 scientific studies, 25 of which are double-blind and placebo-controlled. It contains patented Q10 “snowflakes”, which the body absorbs fast. All manufacturing takes place at Pharma Nord’s pharmaceutical manufacturing plant and is controlled by the Danish food and pharmaceutical authorities.

Pharmaceutical grade Q10 raw material When manufacturing Q10 preparations by medical standards, it requires the use of a pharmaceutical grade Q10 raw material. This guarantees that the raw material has an adequately high and uniform quality and is devoid of impurities.

“WITH OUR THOUGHTS WE MAKE THE WORLD.” BUDDHA by Davie Philip

Change is constant. However, recently the pace seems to be accelerating. To cope with this, and to make the transition to a healthy society based on fairness, wellbeing and sustainability, we need to shift worldviews and open our minds and hearts to fresh ways of thinking. So what kind of thinking would enable us to flourish in uncertainty? Currently, we are locked into an individualistic worldview where reductionist or mechanistic thinking dominates. This mindset breaks everything down into parts to be analysed and measured. By understanding the parts and how they function, we presume we can understand everything important there is to know about something. This reductionism is useful for understanding inanimate things, or simple systems like machines, but can be destructive when applied to living systems. It also tends to lead to a silo mentality, which is inward looking and resists sharing information and resources. The world is complex and messy and to thrive in it we need a transformation from an outdated ‘ego-system’ mindset, focused on the wellbeing of oneself, to an ‘eco-system’ awareness which emphasises the health of the whole. Holism or systems-thinking can help do this. In this worldview, complex systems are not understood by breaking them apart, but focus on the relationships between the parts and within the context of larger systems. We need more joined-up thinking if we want a sustainable future. We need to think relationally. The interconnectedness between all forms of life is recognised with systems-thinking. This holistic mindset is conducive to being adaptive and tends to value caring, empathy and cooperation. Reductionist thinkers have a tendency

to hold a fixed way of seeing the world and value wealth, power, prestige and fame. Another assumption underlying the dominant reductionist worldview is the dualistic separation between us and nature.

“We cannot make the transformation the world needs without making an inner transformation in our thinking.” We justify our superiority over the environment when we think we are separate and with this worldview we create fragile, linear systems. Through the diversity and complexity of their webs of relationships, and by sharing resources across their boundaries, living systems increase wellbeing and resilience. Observing these patterns and principles of natural systems might provide us with vital insights into how to redesign our socioeconomic systems to be collaborative, regenerative and resilient. So, how might we shift our thinking? Our current way of thinking is rooted in the industrial revolution. This period of human development was dependent on a mechanistic worldview and has dominated and influenced our behaviour ever since. In integral philosophy, worldviews evolve by including and transcending preceding worldviews. So rather than an ecological mindset replacing a mechanistic one, instead it provides a different perspective and access to another type of knowledge

with which to navigate the world. We cannot make the transformation the world needs without making an inner transformation in our thinking. With an ecological worldview we think in terms of process, pattern, flow, connectedness and relatedness. I believe that as we become more conscious we evolve to hold an ecological worldview. According to theologian Thomas Berry, we will then realise that we live in a world which is a “communion of subjects,” not just a “collection of objects.”

POSITIVEMEDICINE

skin connection NATURAL WAYS TO HELP COMBAT ACNE.

by Maya Daghigi

36 Our skin is more than just a shell. It is a direct reflection of our inner organs. This is the very reason why therapies such as reflexology can positively influence the inner organs, even though they are applied on the skin. Any faults inside our body will, vice versa, be reflected by our skin. In a condition like acne, a number of internal factors can be present, such as hormonal imbalances, faults in digestion, chronic infections and suppressed immunity. Acne also often comes along with clogged lymphatic channels (the body’s waste disposal system). However, it’s equally dependent on age, lifestyle and diet. Hence, a one-size-fits-all solution, such as antibiotics or the contraceptive pill, is just not possible. Luckily, there are numerous ways to help this condition naturally.

“It’s vitally important that you’re in charge of your daily skincare.” It’s vitally important that you’re in charge of your daily skincare. Many anti-spot skincare products can be particularly aggressive, damaging your skin in the long term. Choose natural skincare where you can. Marigold cream, also known

as Calendula, can be very useful due to its anti-microbial, toning and healing properties. You can add a few drops of Lavender essential oil to your cream jar and this can help soothe inflamed acne topically. Your herbalist can create an even more potent and individualised ointment or lotion. Some find a toner made from Echinacea and Chamomile tea effective. Ginger essential oil (diluted in a few drops of sesame oil) applied on deep seated painful spots can help to resolve them more quickly. CLEAN UP YOUR DIET As with almost all skin conditions, gut health is vital. If you have any health issues, then make sure you are addressing them. But as general advice: reduce dairy and gluten in your diet, cut out refined sugars, trans fats and processed foods; use garlic, onions, parsley, green superfoods and top up on your veggies in your daily meals. Go organic to reduce toxic residues in your system. Some kitchen herbs and spices support digestion and have anti-microbial properties. These include fennel seeds, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, thyme and

CNM

rosemary. Use them in your diet as you feel suits you. Along the same lines and vital to your digestion are bitter foods or herbal bitters, such as Swedish bitters. Also turmeric and milk thistle can help acne through their action on detoxification pathways in the liver. Blood sugar balance is vital. Did you know that you can use cinnamon or liquorice root as a sweetener? Alternatively stick to healthy sugar alternatives such as raw honey, stevia or maple syrup. Have you ever considered a detox? Unhealthy or unsuitable foods for you can overload the body with toxins, impacting on its eliminative function (skin is a major organ of elimination). Cleaning up your daily diet will be the first step, but a detoxification programme can be recommended by your practitioner. BUILD UP YOUR IMMUNITY AND FIND WAYS TO RELAX Exercise regularly and manage your stress to keep your hormones balanced. Siberian ginseng is the best herb to support you with your daily challenges. When you are stressed, your adrenal glands release stress hormones, putting pressure on

your system. This will imbalance your hormones even more and might worsen any condition, including acne. Echinacea can be very effective in building up your immunity and there have been a number of reports on how it can improve conditions such as acne. Finally, a daily tea of cleavers, nettle and marigold helps to keep your blood and lymph clear. Don’t forget, in more serious acne cases or if there are other conditions present, consult with your herbalist before taking or applying herbs. Personalised advice is always best. A herbalist who has also trained as a naturopath is additionally qualified to provide dietary and lifestyle advice.

POSITIVE FOOD

the apples

of my eye THERE IS MORE TO APPLES THAN MEETS THE EYE. by Hans Wieland

What is the first word that comes to your mind if I say ‘apples’? Well, mine is Cox, as in Cox Orange. For me cox is the quintessential dessert apple which had a very special place in my parents’ mini-orchard and could be harvested from mid-September on, and lasted well into the new year. What a disappointment then to find out twenty years later that the climate in the Northwest of Ireland is not right for Cox. This is when I fell in love with the Irish Peach, an apple variety which ripens from late July on, has great flavour, but sadly doesn’t keep. Same for Katie, which goes soft within days, or Discovery, another of my favourite apples, which has to be eaten within four to six weeks.

farmers markets says: Argentina, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa. That is the reason I tend not buy apples at all from June to August. In Ireland, apples are available fresh from August to November and then from cold storage till the following spring. Some varieties only appear for a short time, like Lord Lambourne or the already mentioned Discovery, while others like Jonagolds and Elstars appear in the winter months as they get better when ripened and keep well for a few months. Bramleys, one of Ireland’s favourite cooking apples and the best for making apple pie, store very well and are in season from August to April.

Apples have a season too

We need to grow more apples in Ireland

As I learned that not all apple varieties grow everywhere, and some keep for months while others don’t, I also learned that apples have a season - in Ireland or the UK, generally from mid-August to April. This is often forgotten because, in our modern-day supermarket, an apple is something which never disappears no matter what time of year it is. Can you remember the country of origin when you bought your apples last summer (May to July)? My research in local shops, supermarkets and also

The big problem still is that we don’t grow enough apples in Ireland and the vast majority of apples consumed in Ireland annually are imported. That’s why it is all the more important to support Irish apple farms; Con Traas in Tipperary, Highbank Organic Orchard in Kilkenny or David Llewellyn in North Dublin. Better even, for the future, is to grow our own apples. Two centuries ago Ireland’s orchard acreage was many times greater than what it is today.

How to plant an apple tree or create an orchard We can all make a difference and join a community orchard in our neighbourhood or plant trees ourselves. Growing fruit is in many ways easier than growing vegetables, although it requires a bit more preparation, planning and forward thinking. As you are preparing the ground for trees to grow for decades consider three main areas: SHELTER - to protect from storms and cold winds, for growth and to ensure good pollination. A hedge, ideally planted ahead, can be a productive feature itself if you include species such as elders, hazel and hawthorn. DRAINAGE - no fruit trees like their roots sitting in water. In heavy soils land drains need to be installed or trees planted on sloping mounds and staked well. SOIL - ideally, fruit trees like a brown loam with an underlying permeable sub-soil. The soil structure can be improved with compost, manures and fertilisers before planting takes place.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ROOTSTOCK Picking the right rootstock for your needs is important. Rootstocks control the size of the tree, its suitability for soil types, its yield and its disease resistance. Apple trees are grafted onto rootstocks with an M or MM prefix. Varieties grafted onto M27 or M9 dwarf rootstock will typically have a height and spread of 2 to 3m. Those on M26 or MM106 will grow between 3.5 and

HANS’ APPLE BUTTER One of my favourite recipes to preserve apples is making Apple Butter, completely without sugar. If the apples are sweet you can leave out the honey. Ingredients: 1 kg apples 150g honey 1 lemon freshly squeezed (optional) 1/2 to 1tsp of vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon

6m and those on MM111, 5.5m and more. Trees on M27 or M9 require permanent staking and M9 has become the rootstock of choice for commercial production. Good suppliers of Irish indigenous apple varieties are the Irish Seed Savers in Clare and The Organic Centre in Leitrim.

Method: Peel the apples (the peels can be dehydrated and made into natural pectin!), cut into chunks and simmer on very low temperature with a little water until they are soft. Liquidise with a stick blender or in a blender. Add honey and lemon juice if you like and the spices. Heat the mix up to 72 Celsius and fill hot into jars and close with twist-off lids. Turn them upside down for a couple of minutes. Turn them back and let them cool down. Store in a cool place. “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” (Martin Luther)

Last, not least, make your apples last Apart from storing apples in a cool, dark place, which in the absence of cellars is not so simple, there are many ways to enjoy apples in a different form: Apple juice, wine, apple cider and cider vinegar, dried apple rings, apple butter and jam. Most of the windfalls from our apple trees will end up as apple juice. I also made an apple wine which in the worst case scenario will be used in cooking.

“Better even, for the future, is to grow our own apples.” Hans Wieland has worked and taught at The Organic Centre for over 20 years. He has now ‘retired’ to Neantog Kitchen Garden School in Cliffoney, again joining his wife Gaby Wieland, herbalist and naturopath. The couple offer a range of courses and workshops in food growing, fermenting, foraging, cheese making, healthy cooking and baking. neantog.com

autumnal

indulgence LET YOUR SENSES FEAST ON THIS DELICIOUS DESSERT. by Tony Keogh

This tart is very simple to put together and is a real crowd pleaser. There is something about the combination of white chocolate and berries that sings a beautiful song. In this recipe, that combination is used to full effect: the chocolate cuts smoothly like a knife through the tartness of fresh seasonal berries. The chocolate and berries are then offset with a rich nutty base, which is enhanced with the delicate flavour of apricot. White chocolate and vanilla tart in an apricot brazil nut crust with macerated autumn berries Ingredients for the base

Ingredients for the filling

Ingredients for the fruit

140 grams desiccated coconut 100 grams brazil nuts 100 grams flaked almonds 220 grams ready-to-eat apricots

120 grams cacao butter 120 grams coconut oil 120 grams cashew nuts 120 grams coconut sugar 350 ml water 3 tsp of agar powder Vanilla extract Pinch of salt 100 ml soy milk

150 grams autumn berries Zest of one lime Dessertspoon of coconut sugar

METHOD 1 Start with the base. In a food processor, mill the brazil nuts, almonds and coconut, adding the apricots slowly, until the mixture comes together. Line a 28 cm tart tin with the mixture and bake it for about 8 minutes. While it is baking, prepare the filling. 2 Bring the water to a simmer and place a metal bowl over it. Add the cacao

40

butter. When it melts, add the coconut oil. When both have melted together, remove the bowl, add the sugar to the water and bring it back to a simmer. Add the agar, boil the mixture for a minute or two, then remove it from the heat. 3 Add the cashews, soya milk and the water mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Whisk this mixture into the melted fats. Add some vanilla, a pinch

of salt and taste for sweetness. If you are happy, pour the mixture in and leave it aside somewhere cool to set. 4 For the macerated fruit, simply combine all the ingredients and set them aside for at least half an hour. Serve the tart with a good dollop of fruit.

Healing Menopausal Blues FIND SUPPORT THROUGH THIS STAGE. by Grainne McCarthy They all say life begins at 40. So why, you may wonder, do you just not feel yourself ? The perimenopause phase starts around 40 and can last anything from five to ten years. During this time, your body undergoes several hormonal changes, which are responsible for the change in how you are feeling. Oestrogen levels start to fall, as do progesterone levels, and this can mean changes in your hair, skin, energy and sleep cycles. This can continue for several months or years, or vary from month to month. It can also be dependent on factors such as stress, sleep, exercise and your diet. With the right diet and nutritional support, you can help to manage the way you feel.

Stress - Reduce stress levels by cutting out caffeine and taking time to enjoy your life. Meditation may also help calm a busy mind. Quit - If you smoke try to cut down, with a view to quitting.

Supplementation - Try Cleanmarine MenoMin, which is an all-in-one combination of phospholipid Omega 3, B vitamins, soy isoflavones, rosemary extract, folate, biotin and vitamin D that can provide women with the right nutrients to help them move through this phase of life.

Keep moving - Exercise regularly. B Vitamins - Support your body by taking B vitamins which help reduce stress and regulate hormones. Omega 3 - Support brain and cardiovascular function by increasing your Omega 3 intake to help cognition, skin and heart health.

The Gift of Yoga for Children BALANCING THE MIND AND SENSES. by Cristin Tighe

44 Fabulous Flax TWIN JOURNEY OF HEALING BODY AND MIND. by Alison McEvoy I spoke to Kathleen Irwin recently, who, along with her husband John, has been growing organic flaxseed at Adora Farm in Co. Laois since 2010. Some eight years on from their beginnings, they continue to be the only Irish growers of organic flaxseed. Kathleen explained that cultivating flaxseed in the Irish climate is a labour of love, one which also has an unexpected benefit to the flax which ensues. Due to the abundance of cold and dark we experience over the winter, the Irish flaxseed gathers to itself every precious ray of sun it can garner. This in turn leads to a much richer and more potent flaxseed oil with increased omega 3 levels.

“Solely healing the physical, is to heal a symptom of a deeper imbalance.” This industrious couple have long been providing flaxseed, ground flax and flax oil to Irish customers. Their golden product contains high levels of mucilage, making it a fantastic digestive tonic. It also contains essential fatty acids and omegas 3, 6 and 9 which feed the skin, hair and eyes, lower cholesterol and support menopausal symptoms. More recently, however, the purpose of the farm has evolved as the realisation emerged for Kathleen that to really heal, “you have to work also with the emotional and mental aspects of the self. Solely healing the physical, is to heal a symptom of a deeper imbalance.” Adora Farm is now undergoing a transformation to facilitate this kind of multi-level healing experience. It is in the process of becoming “a meditative place where you can turn your attention inwards, sit with the body…discover a thinking or belief which is causing blockages.” Soon the farm will be home to ‘earth igloos’ where individuals can go into solitude and discover their true path back to health and balance. adorafarm.com

Cristin Tighe, MEM/MA, founder Kids & Yoga! is a Kundalini Research Institute (International Teacher/Trainer). She has trained children’s yoga teachers internationally since 2005 in eight countries and is returning to Ireland for the eighth time this year to teach trainings in several cities. She is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT-500, RCYT/RPYT. Today’s world is stressful and over-stimulating. Children’s yoga is a fun, safe way to maintain (or regain) joy and selfconfidence. It also helps them to centre and focus. Yoga is not about accomplishments (like sports or piano lessons), but encourages children’s experience of how they move, breathe and feel. Yoga practice is a path of self-awareness, allowing children to discover their strengths without selfjudgment or comparison/outside expectations. Through positive reinforcement and powerful tools, children gain mindfulness. Research-proven benefits show mindful practices balance the nervous system, revitalise the body and bring peace of mind. All kids (even the super-active!) love how practice helps them to know themselves, be present to make wise choices and learn easier.

“…mindful practices balance the nervous system, revitalise the body and bring peace of mind.” Yogic tools help children’s sensory systems work better in the following ways: 1. Yoga songs (mantra): vibration and vocalisation calm and focus attention, help language development, eye contact and interactions. 2. Breath-work (pranayama): develops breath support for speech and postural stability, and deep breathing allows children to stabilise activity levels and self-calm. 3. Poses/Yoga Sets (asana/kriya): enhance gross motor skills, body awareness, physical coordination and brain balance. 4. Relaxation (savasana): visualisation, music and storytelling enhance stress-reduction benefits 5. Meditation (dhyana): improves attention and the ability to sit still and concentrate. It can remove anxiety and clear the mind Together, these elements give children the gift of yoga! All children can benefit from yoga, especially those with sensory processing challenges - which are often the underlying and sometimes missed cause of difficult behaviours, learning difficulties and social concerns. I have found that all types of kids love and learn from practicing yoga! If you want to know more about sharing about the health, balance and radiance it brings to their lives, please be in touch! kidsandyoga.com

46 ‘Rewilding’ RETURN TO VITAL CONNECTION WITH THE EARTH. by Alison McEvoy Some of my most precious experience-cum-memories are of a year spent in Ecuador. Landing on South American soil heralded a moment in my life in which my body spontaneously remembered its connection with the earth. Luxuriously still and unhurried time spent in jungles, cloud forests and on beaches activated a deep feeling of recognition of myself as a human-being-on-earth. I began to feel a part of it all, intimately connected, nourished by and responsible for this planet earth under my feet, all around me and whose elements were also inside of me. This earth connection gave me such a feeling of vitality, of belonging, of meaning and fulfilment all in itself.

“It is through this connection [with the earth] that we can find our way back to our most alive, happy and health-full selves.” Sky Maria Buitenhuis, founder of Earth Dreaming, has made it her life’s work to facilitate, guide and support people in remembering and re-embodying their connection with the the web of life on our beautiful planet Earth. She has woven together her heart’s desires to be an artist and an environmental activist by developing a patchwork of courses and trainings designed to foster a deep connection with nature, and to reorientate human culture towards a relationship with the earth. Sky holds forest therapy sessions and guide trainings, bringing people alive to the natural power of the forest to calm, relax and restore us. Simple offerings like these, profoundly gentle, are just what so many of us need in a modern world laden with technology and societal pressures. For women in particular, Sky has created a series of weekend long retreats to take women on the ‘Heroine’s journey’ – a supported journey of return to the wild feminine, to embodiment, to a nourishing and pleasurable connection with nature and to the ancestral skills, such as crafting, story-telling, ceremony and ritual, with which our ancestors wove themselves into the fabric of their environment. So Natural SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED SOAPS AND CANDLES. by Alison McEvoy Emma Fallon used to experience headaches and allergic reactions to the synthetically fragranced products she was using at home, and so started on a journey to create products that were as natural as possible and safe for her family. When her husband Dave became redundant they decided to team up together to create Emma’s So Naturals, a range of ecologically-sound soy candles which would encompass all of the things that Emma wanted in her candles. Her candles are the kind that won’t send smoke stains up the walls, are fragranced using only pure essential oils and are reasonably priced.

“These little beauties are free from parabens, SLS, and… synthetic fragrances” Emma and Dave filled me in on all the work they have been putting into their handmade candles, which are part of the sustainable produce movement happening in Ireland and around the globe. Vegan and eco-friendly, their wicks are 100% cotton, they said no to plastic packaging, use FSC forest approved paper and cardboard, and their waxes are sustainably sourced. When it’s a small, homemade, family business, these are the kinds of choices the producer can choose and maintain standards on. More recently, this year’s project has been expanding into a range of luxurious handmade soaps containing delicious ingredients like shea butter, avocado, olive and coconut oils with pure essential oils. These little beauties are free from parabens, SLS, and the synthetic fragrances which were what led Emma to originally embark on this path of creating ‘clean’ candles and soaps. This autumn, Emma and Dave will be bringing Emma’s So Naturals soaps and candles to the Vitality Expo, a massive health and well-being showcase event this Autumn in the RDS, Dublin. Hands On Health RE-EMPOWER YOURSELF. by Mairead Mc Dermott A stage 4 cancer diagnosis woke me up to a new way of living. A way of being kinder to my body, reducing toxins, processed food, following a path of wellness and going the natural route. It opened me up to a new way of thinking about my health. I incorporated psychotherapy, homeopathy, bio-energy, detoxing, release therapy and thermography. I started to look after my body and treat it in a holistic manner. Healing from shock, trauma and a cancer diagnosis was a mammoth task and could not be done by relying on conventional medicine alone. I came to thermography to help me keep an eye on what was going on inside in a safe, non-invasive way. I wanted to take my power back and look after my body in a safe way. I am managing my health condition with all manner of conventional and alternative methods. A one size fits all approach

doesn’t work for the majority of people because our bodies are all different and react to treatment in a different way. Hence, the variable results we see: why some people make it and others don’t. In my experience, the holistic approach is a powerful way to maintain health and wellbeing…

Cancer has been a wakeup call and has taken me on a remarkable journey! My path to wellness has been a rollercoaster. I’ve learned the methods that work for me and I’ve learned what doesn’t. I’ve been documenting it on: Maireadmcwellness.com

OMEGA ESSENTIALS. by Alison McEvoy After five years of research, Margaret Lamrani finally found what she was looking for; the perfect combination fish oil with the marks of distinction she had been waiting for. EQ pure arctic oil is extracted from cod caught in certified, sustainably managed, Norwegian fisheries. The oil is cold-pressed on the trawlers and taken to laboratories inland to remove all heavy metals. Added to this pure, omega-3 laden fish oil is organic, cold-pressed olive oil (containing omega-9 and polyphenols), vitamin E (essential for omega-3 absorption), Vitamin D and natural lemon flavouring (making it much more palatable than your regular fish oil). Dr Hogne Vik, cardiologist and developer of EQ oil, recognised that, in the modern diet, omega-6 is over-consumed. When our ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 is

“In 15-18 days I will know the exact ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 in my body!” out of balance in the body, this can make us more vulnerable to inflammation and the resulting complications. He came up with the idea to provide tests, so people can know for sure that their supplement is working to bring up their omega-3 while lowering omega-6. I met with Margaret to take the EQ omega test. Among the contents was an ID card onto which I dropped two little globules of my blood. I kept one half of the ID card for checking my results online, and the the other half we placed into a pre-paid envelope and promptly dropped in the post. In 15-18 days I will know the exact ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 in my body!

In the meantime I am on a dose of two tablespoons of EQ arctic oil a day and in six months I will be retested to assess my progress. Stay tuned....!

EQ pure arctic oil will host a product launch and talk with developer Dr. Hogne Vik in the Clayton Hotel, Dublin Airport, on September 30th. For more details contact: margarettmaher10@hotmail.com

Deeper Detox SHARE THE EARTH’S DREAM. by April Danann

Do you ever wonder how much a part of your life it takes to maintain, hold or think up your dreams? Not just those odd motion pictures at night, but also the things you long for during the day – what if this is all life really is, a dream within a landscape created by a consciousness that includes you and me? Could we then drop everything – all at once – and begin a fresh new page like painting a picture or wiping off a poster board, ready to re-draw elements of our lives with a clean slate. Might others join us on our journey or have they been there all along? Would we need to let go of energy, issues, ideas and stuff that doesn’t belong to us; things we have carried for lifetimes that no longer serve our purpose on this planet. Toxic matter that weighs us down.

“the earth...dreams of something better for herself, reaches higher, deeper and longs to purge what doesn’t belong.” What if the earth did the same – she dreams of something better for herself, reaches higher, deeper and longs to purge what doesn’t belong. Thus begins the process of waking up the inner core of her being while we all watch and wonder. Perhaps.

It is long past the time when we thought of ourselves as separate from this world, our Mother Earth Gaia with whom we co-exist and share…..absolutely everything including the air we breathe. She needs us more than ever to seek understanding of this unique relationship and to do our part in cleaning up the mess we have made. Next time you do a detox or healthy cleanse – refuse and remove packaging, return your bottles, let go of some plastic and reuse all you can. What a gift to broaden and deepen your detox to include the environment around you. We are all in this together. aprildanann.com

51 A Passion for Flavour THE GENOVESE ETHOS. by Aisling Cronin Genovese Foods is an award-winning producer of pestos, tapenades and mayonnaise, with a real clean food ethos. Their ranges include: Genovese – Award winning and authentically Italian fresh pestos and tapenade, all gluten free and vegetarian or vegan. Oh Mayo – Launched at Bloom 2018, this fresh mayonnaise range is made from only Irish ingredients, all gluten free and vegetarian. Their brandnew Veggie Earth range will be launched at Dublin’s Vitality Expo. It will contain pestos, tapenade and veganaise (a type of mayonnaise produced without eggs). All Veggie Earth products will be gluten free and vegan. The company’s passion for flavour guides them to use only small batch production methods with minimal processing, which adds greatly to the flavours and textures created across all of their ranges.

“The company’s passion for flavour guides them to use only small batch production methods.” When I spoke to company director Gill Toal, her passion for her craft shone through. ‘We believe in producing clean, additive free, healthy food, so we are wholly committed to sourcing high quality sustainable and healthier ingredients for

our recipes,’ she says. Gill is especially excited to be launching Veggie Earth at the Vitality Expo, which will take place in Dublin’s RDS this Autumn. If you are there, make sure you try some of their delicious products. As a vegan with a great interest in supporting new plant-based ranges, I know I, for one, will definitely swing by the Genovese stand to get my hands on some Veggie Earth! genovese.ie

What’s the Story With CBD? THE HEMP COMPOUND’S HEALING POTENTIAL. by Conall Heussaff The recent rise of CBD (cannabidiol) oil may have come as a surprise to many, but The Hemp Company of Dublin has been heralding the benefits of hemp for almost twenty years. CBD is a naturally occurring health compound found in hemp that has become hugely popular among those looking to supplement their health and wellness. The World Health Organization recently declared CBD to be “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile,” with no risk of serious side effects or abuse from its use. People who use CBD report a subtle sense of calm and relaxation. As it contains only trace elements of THC, it is non-psychoactive and non-addictive. Preliminary scientific research has been very positive, so

considering CBD’s therapeutic potential, you might wonder:

What’s the Story With CBD? While the scientific community awaits results from large-scale clinical trials, the public has forged ahead. Many people have reported that CBD has helped them to cope with chronic pain and inflammation, stress, anxiety, and neurological disorders. Global research continues to reveal positive new knowledge that will allow us to realise the true potential of this fascinating compound. Since CBD products have entered the market, The Hemp Company of Dublin has been working tirelessly to research

the science behind CBD, promote only the best CBD oils and provide support and knowledge on all things hemp. They carry a comprehensive range of CBD oils, capsules, tinctures, pastes and balms.

Find Balance in Ballybrack THE PHARMACY WITH AN ALTERNATIVE TWIST. by Aisling Cronin Doran’s Pharmacy in Ballybrack, Co. Dublin, aims to be a one-stop shop for all things therapeutic, whether that falls under the umbrella of conventional medicine or alternative modalities. Owner and pharmacist Conor Keane has a great passion for high-quality customer service, as I learned when I spoke to him to learn more about the inspiration behind this unique business, which encompasses both Doran’s Pharmacy and a health food store called Whole Health. “I originally trained as a pharmacist,” Conor explains, “and about sixteen years ago I saw an opportunity to expand the business to include a health store. I felt that Whole Health would be a good fit alongside the pharmacy. It was a little bit different for its time, but I was interested in the idea of conventional allopathic

medicine and alternative medicine working side by side. I think both can play an important role in someone’s health.” He is keen to offer his customers a variety of different approaches that they can use to support their overall wellbeing.

“Conventional and alternative medicine can both play an important role in someone’s health.”

At Doran’s Pharmacy, you can seek traditional pharmacological advice from Conor and his team of pharmacists, or consult the nutritional therapist or one of the alternative therapists who work in the venue. In addition, the pharmacy carries a wide range of supplements and health-boosting products. You can search for Doran’s Pharmacy on Facebook, or just email them to learn more. doranspharmacy@gmail.com

Feel Ooom-tastic STRESS-FIGHTING SNACKS HIT THE MARKET. by Aisling Cronin In a world filled with work deadlines, information overload, family commitments and other stresses, many of us are on the lookout for something that can help us achieve a sense of balance. Stefan and Lorenzo – the dynamic duo behind a brand-new food company called Ooom Snacks – have come up with a nutritious solution. Stefan is a naturopath and holistic coach, while Lorenzo is a marketing expert. They explain to me that Ooom products have a measurable anti-stress effect, due to the presence of adaptogen plants. These plants can increase our body’s ability to resist the detrimental effects of stress hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. “We wanted to create something that would suit modern Western lifestyles,” Lorenzo says. “Adaptogen plants would normally be available only in supplement or powder format, but we wanted to use them in snack treats that

would be available for people to take with them wherever they go. I think we have succeeded in creating a tasty product, made with strawberries, peaches, apples, carrots … and no unnatural additives.” Ooom Snacks are vegan, kosher, gluten free and specially freeze dried in order to maintain over 95% of the ingredients’ nutritional content.

“Ooom products have a measurable antistress effect.” Ooom Snacks will be officially launched at Dublin’s Vitality Expo in the RDS this autumn. They are also available through The Happy Pear health stores. lorenzo@ooomsnack.com stefan@ooomsnack.com

the care behind

self-care SHOWING UP FOR OURSELVES AND OUR PLANET. by Alison Canavan

The conversation around self-care has been lengthy. At times, you would be forgiven for feeling like it has tipped over into narcissism. As human beings, the ego tends to take over sometimes and this can lead to an inflated sense of self. However, showing up for yourself in an authentic way means becoming aware that with our world the way it is at the moment, we simply don’t have time for everyone to work through all their problems fully before showing up for each other and the planet. We live in a world of instant gratification and social media fame, leading us to think that there’s no point in doing anything that might matter unless it’s on a grand scale. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, when we show up, wake up, give back and make a difference, it accelerates our collective healing, and that is certainly something this world needs right now. Let me put it like this: if you work on your own self-improvement and you are a little bit less messed up than you were yesterday, and your friend does the same, and she’s a little bit less messed up, and then your neighbour does the same, all of these little bits help to raise the collective consciousness as a whole.

“When we show up and make a difference, it accelerates our collective healing.” So just what does it mean when I say ‘showing up for yourself ’? Very simply, it means doing the work and facing the parts of yourself you would rather ignore. This can be done through meditation, mindfulness techniques, journaling or any other way that helps you to dig deep, feel and, in turn, heal. For generations in Ireland, we have lifted the rug and swept our problems underneath, hoping that no one would ever lift that rug and release them. What we fail to understand is that we pass those unhealed traumas onto the next generation and the generation after that. I believe we are living in traumatised times and the planet as a whole is pretty traumatised. However, I have great hope in humanity. If we truly want to feel at peace in this world, we need to go within and work from there. We can certainly get temporary reprieve from numbing ourselves when we feel uncomfortable with things like alcohol, drugs, medication,

shopping, gambling and our phones, to name a few. But these temporary fixes keep us stuck as an individual and as a collective. Maybe we are feeling uncomfortable because we know the world is suffering and needs action? We need to stop waiting for someone else to reclaim our communities. We need to reconnect with people in real life, not just on social media. When we do the work, we become more conscious and aware of waste too. Our oceans are at risk as a result of our instant gratification lifestyle. Slowing down, which is essential for human beings, enables us to live more in the present, making better choices each day like carrying reusable coffee cups, shopping bags and water bottles with us. Remember that the world was never changed by the masses, but by the few who decided to wake up and make their lives matter. Could you be one of those people too? becomplete.ie

returning to our natural resonance THE FAB APPROACH TO HEALTH.

by Paulette Agnew

My FAB Health book explores a successful new emerging healing paradigm using Frequency and Bioenergy (FAB) devices and practices. For too long, general science has led us to believe that our bodies and our environment are just bundles of molecules and that when this biochemical mix becomes sick, it has nothing to do with us. The reality is, we are living in a sea of energy, light and interconnected consciousness, emitted and absorbed by all things. The future of our world and our own wellness lies directly at our doorstep. The FAB Health book came about due to my experience with chronic Lyme disease. Ten years of misdiagnosis and debilitating symptoms had brought me to my knees. Cardiac problems, semi paralysis, memory loss, chronic fatigue, arthritis, hair loss, insomnia, depression … the list was endless. A barrage of pharmaceutical antibiotic drugs is the normal approach, but research reveals that many of the thousands of people who are given this treatment never fully recover. Instead, FAB medicine rebuilt my battered body, initiating a deep desire to find out why it works and share it with all of you!

So what can we do to stay healthy Light is key. Biophotons emit both information and energy. Molecules and cells require both to function and we get this from being outside in natural daylight. Modern comfort-based lifestyles are a trap. Living inside at work, school, shopping malls, and even transport reduces our time

in nature, where we should be absorbing those vital photons.

“The future of our world and our own wellness lies directly at our doorstep.” Get grounded. Throw off those shoes, feel the earth beneath your feet as often as possible, and a stream of electrons will flow up through and into the connective tissue. We need abundant electrons to fight free radicals and transport energy throughout the body. Hydrate. Alkalised water, such as Kangen water, helps the body to fight off acidity caused by stress. Get a water device for your home. By drinking enough water, (not beer, tea or cola) the cells can flush out toxins which impair normal healthy cell function. Detox, detox, detox! The body is like a spaceship, full of trillions of individual cells. Each one requires good nutrition in and waste out. Exercise, fasting, correct diet and saunas are just a few of the simple, fun and inexpensive ways to help yourself. Last but not least, electromagnetic smog, from mobile phones, masts, computers, WiFi, 4G, 5G, etc, are all propelling unnatural frequencies into our cells, disturbing our healthy frequencies and correct cellular communication. It is

now essential to protect yourself and your home/workplace from those things that disrupt our natural bioenergetic pathways. One company called Bioprotective Systems have gadgets that can be attached to phones, modems etc. I personally use the BICOM bioresonance device for diagnosis and treatment with my clients. I also use the CoRe Inergetix to run a full health scan on my non-local international clients. Welcome to a new world of healing – yet the oldest on the planet – where you are not a victim of illness, but a co-creator in your recovery and personal awakening journey. For more information on diagnosis and treatments with Paulette, the devices, and to order FAB Health go to: fabhealthbook.com

Paulette’s Tips for a Healthy Life • Walk barefoot in nature – allow the Earth to nourish you • Drink alkalised water – Kangen water is a good example of this • Exercise regularly – yoga, Chi Gong or walking are all powerful forms of exercise you can try • Protect yourself from harmful electromagnetic frequencies with bioprotective devices • Eat nutritious, organic food • Use natural skin products to reduce the body’s chemical load

trust the experts DENTAL IMPLANTS, THE HOLISTIC WAY. In 2015, I had a tooth extraction which left quite a gap on the left hand side of my mouth. This led to an increase in tension in my jaw, and over time I began to clench my jaw at night, which led to tension and pain in my jaw during the day. After a trip to my holistic dentist, I educated myself on the options in dental implants. There are two types of implants currently available: titanium and zirconium. Titanium has been used in medicine for decades. In addition to dental work, it is commonly used for hip and knee replacements. The success rate for titanium is pretty high as an implant. Some people can have allergic reactions to metal, but this is quite rare. It is recommended to have an allergy test if considering titanium. I opted for zirconium as I preferred to stay metal free. In its original form, zirconium is technically a metal. However, when used in dentistry it is converted to zirconia: its crystal form, with a likeness to diamonds. There are no known cases of allergy to this substance. Both options are biocompatible. On the recommendation of my dentist, I opted for zirconium. This led me to Dr. Wilson Grigolli, an implantologist with over 35 years’ experience. Dr. Grigolli has placed

over 27,000 implants in his career to date. He works from Dental House on Aungier Street and he has an excellent, gentle, focused manner. You really feel you are in the hands of someone who knows his work inside out: a true craftsman who enjoys helping and uplifting people’s lives.

“The staff at Dental House are excellent and they really put you at ease.” After the first consultation, the day for the surgery was booked. The team at Dental House are excellent and they really put you at ease. The surgery took about one hour and I have to say it was entirely pain free, with the unusual sensation being the only slight discomfort. Dr. Grigolli is a true expert and you get the feeling you can kick back and just let him do his job. After the surgery, I recuperated in an adjoining room. The colours and feel of the clinic seemed to enhance my state of relaxation, as they were very calming and conducive to recovery. I had three more appointments with Dr. Grigolli to monitor the healing process.

Dr Wilson Grigolli All going well, I was due to meet Dr. Claudio Catran, a prosthodontist with over 30 years’ experience, for my impressions three months after the surgery. I met Claudio in July and we had a nice chat to plan the impressions. We discussed the second appointment, which would be a cleaning and the taking of the impressions (this would be done with a similar substance used to make mouthguards). Claudio informed me that technology is moving forward at a rapid rate: in some clinics, the impressions can be taken digitally. Dental House is pioneering the area of non metal implants globally and staying up to speed with all of the latest developments in this area. At the end of September, I’m due to have my final crowns fitted, which will return my bite to its full potential. Dental House is a top class professional clinic. If you are considering dental implants or know someone who is, this is an excellent place to have your treatment. An initial consultation with Dr. Grigolli costs €150 and once you have met him I’m sure you will feel as I did: ready to go for it. Good luck on your journey.

POSITI V E A STROLOGY

the five elements and vedic

astrology THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF BEING.

by Calodagh McCumiskey

When we look at the beauty of nature, the five elements provide the foundation for the physical world. Ayurveda, the Indian traditional system of medicine or “living in tune with nature”, recognises these elements - Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth - as the building blocks of all matter. An understanding of the elements gives us deep insights in to our own and other’s natures, as well as of the world around us. Just as all the elements are in the world, they are also in us. As Rumi says: We are a drop in the ocean and the ocean in a drop. Fire is the element of the signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and the Sun and the South Node of the moon, Ketu. Earth is the element of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air is the element of Gemini, Libra, Aquarius and Rahu, the north node of the moon. Water is the element of Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces and the Moon. In Vedanta, each of the five planets are linked to an element (with ether as the fifth). The Vedas say that everything emanated from the one basic vibration of ‘Om’ with – Jupiter for Ether, Saturn for Air, Mars for Fire, Mercury for Earth and Venus for Water.

The elements have their own qualities. Earth grounds us, helping us to be present in our lives, but too much earth makes stuck. Air brings tremendous ability to connect seemingly unrelated things with powerful results. Too much air makes us ‘airy-fairy’. The water element helps us connect with others and go with the flow of life. Too much water makes us wishywashy. Fire gives us passion and drive to do things, but too much or indirected fire gives us anger and frustration and can even lead to destruction. We need space for each of the elements to flow and function properly. The elemental strengths and tendencies we have depends on the signs and houses our planets are placed in and our rising sign.

“…reflect on the elements needed to bring you into a more finely tuned harmonious balance for a positive and productive life.”

From a compatibility view point, Aries go best with other fire signs. Similarly, earth, water and air signs are all mutually compatible. There are also natural love connections between the harmonious sun signs of fire-air and earth-water. Opposites also attract, so it’s useful to do a full compatibility analysis. On a personal level, it is also interesting to reflect on what elements are lacking or over-used in your life. For a happy and balanced life, all elements need to be in use on a daily basis and in balance. Fire gives us excitement and energy for life. Earth gives us acceptance and the ability to be present. Air gives us wonderful creativity, ideas and new ways of thinking and doing. Water gives us an ability to flow with what is happening in life and connect with others with healthy boundaries. If you are feeling out of balance, reflecting on the elements will help you achieve a more harmonious balance. You will be amazed at what you discover about yourself in the process.
