positively newsworthy good news from around the globe
1 What Goes Around The saying what goes around comes around is nothing new, but often the reality is that good deeds do indeed go unnoticed. However, that’s not the reality for homeless Jérôme Aucant, who saved the life of his local baker and was rewarded with an apprenticeship and the chance to buy the business for just ₠1. Michel Flamant has been a baker in the French town of Dole for over 40 years and would regularly give Aucant croissant and coffee as he sat begging outside the boulangerie. One afternoon Flamant started to feel unwell but ignored it and continued working. Later that day Aucant popped in for a chat and a coffee and when he noticed that Flamant was unwell he immediately pulled him to safety and called the emergency services. What later transpired was that Flamant was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning after an oven had been repaired incorrectly and was, according to medical staff, 15 minutes away from death. After two weeks in hospital, Flamant returned to his
6 bakery and offered his saviour an apprenticeship, which he accepted. The baker, who admits to having a “terrible temperament”, said he loves “transmitting and training people who know how to listen like Jérôme”. When it became clear Aucant had a natural aptitude, Flamant decided to leave him the business for “one symbolic euro”, after none of his three daughters expressed interest in it, saying: “What’s more
“Flamant decided to leave him the business for one symbolic euro” important: money or life? I’m not rich but I don’t give a damn about money. I want to be free, to be at peace now and if it can make him happy, so much the better. Jérôme is a hard worker and wants to succeed. He deserves a break.”
2 Random Acts of Kindness How would you react if you got a feeling that you were meant to change your life so you could do one giant act of kindness for an absolute stranger? Would you ignore it and hope the feeling goes away? We would too, and that’s exactly what 28-year-old Eugene Yoon did when he got a similar notion. “I tried to reject it for about two months ‘cause it was just too outlandish,” Yoon said. Eventually, Yoon gave in, accepted this idea, and just waited for the right opportunity to cross his path. Then a video of paraplegic Arthur Renowitzky popped up on his Facebook page and he knew he’d found his man. Since being mugged, shot and paralysed eight years previous, Renowitzky had vowed he would walk again, and so Yoon decided not to rest until he had helped this stranger achieve that goal. And Yoon did more than help, in fact he quit his job at a research company to hike the Pacific Coast trail, a trail that runs from the California-Mexico border to Canada, to raise enough money to buy Renowitzky an exoskeleton device; an $80,000 piece of machinery that helps people walk again. Along the way, he posted videos of the adventure and asked people to donate on social media. By the time Yoon had got to Washington State he had already reached his goal, and Renowitzky had the equipment he so desperately needed. “To quit his job, to go into debt from doing this, to help me get back on my feet. You don’t meet people like that every day,” Renowitzky said. “I call him my brother now. We are brothers. I’m just very thankful to have a friend like him.”
3 Education Matters Lawyer Marty Burbank and his university professor wife Seon Chun-Burbank have long harboured a retirement dream of sailing around the world in a small sail boat. However, when the time came to put their money where their mouths were, the couple decided instead to spend the $1 million on a class of Californian kindergarten students. Well actually, the couple decided to pay the college tuition of all 27 to be exact. The only condition? That each year, until high school graduation, the students draw a picture or write an essay about what going to college will mean for them and their families. “I’m a strong believer in visualising your goals,” says Marty, “and this way they’ll be thinking about this each year for the next 12 years.” The class from the Rio Vista Elementary School is full of students who all speak Spanish at home and therefore face language barriers when it comes to education; in fact according to their teacher Tessa Ashton most of them didn’t know college was an option until recently. The Burbanks became involved with the class when they met Ashton at church. She mentioned the kids came from struggling families and Burbank’s first response was, “Let me know what we can do to help.” From there, the couple bought notebooks and snack bars for the class. On seeing university flags around campus, Burbank and Chun-Burbank discovered the school’s initiative to increase college awareness. The plan was to
“I realised that maintaining a boat for the next 16 years cost about the same as getting those kids through college.” get the children used to the idea of going to college. But Burbank knew in his bones that there was no way most of the kids could ever afford higher education. The decision was easy for the couple. Speaking of their decision, Marty Burbank said: “When these kids go home, their parents struggle to pay for food. We asked ourselves, ‘What can we do to solve that?’ I realised that maintaining a boat for the next 16 years cost about the same as getting those kids through college.”

positively newsworthy the little things Brought to you by Niall Mac Giolla Rua.
1 Hope Street My street is busy from morning to night and I love it. Thousands of feet pass through this shared space every day. There’s an amazing flow to it; harmonious and efficient and complex, it almost seems sentient. One morning I stopped to let a couple pass, while they simultaneously stopped for another woman, who happened to be waiting for me to move. We all looked at each other, arrested in a standstill for a moment before laughing as we figured our way out of this navigational knot. Little interruptions in the flow like this are almost always well conducted. They’re often attended by smiles, hands touching elbows, eyes meeting, and friendly gestures – “sorry”, “after you” and “thank-you.” These interruptions can also illuminate what really upholds that flow: an underlying mutual respect among strangers that’s so fundamental we rarely notice it. It’s just kindness, yet this kindness is essential sustenance to the bustling stream of continuous activity on this successful city-centre street.
A woman’s bag breaks sending groceries all over the pavement. Immediately there are three people helping her, and more who just stop in their tracks. A man is giving directions to a couple. Another man leans down to give a homeless girl a sandwich and a coffee. “It’s a BLT. I hope that’s okay,” I hear. Several doors being held open for strangers, buggies and trolleys helped over steps. Countless smiles, nods and waves being exchanged. Kindness, intelligence, flow, activity, growth and success. I don’t think I can ever figure out how these qualities fit together but I can feel them every time I walk down this street.
2 An Engagement It made me feel so helpless seeing their sleeping bag bed on the cold, concrete pavement each night. When one day I finally got speaking to them I couldn’t hide how much they meant to me. They had somehow gotten into my heart. And honestly, I was grateful for it; because for some reason they, more than anyone
else, awakened in me a forgotten part of me – a real compassion, one which was not religious or moralistic, but simply true and natural. The couple and I got along easily right from the beginning and chatted like old friends. I quickly realised I could no longer feel sorry for them. They were happier than most people I knew! Matt and Sarah are one of many homeless couples in Dublin. They have hopes and dreams. They have gratitude. They have friends, they have each other, and they have love. They laugh and have fun. They are homeless. But they are not their homelessness. This unfolded like a sort of automatic sequence: I found a fake diamond ring on the street one day and picked it up, not knowing why. The next time I met them I was surprised to fi nd out they were engaged, but at the same time my hand was getting the ring out of my pocket. I gave the ring to them as a friend’s blessing on their engagement. They were delighted and gave me a huge “thank you” hug. That was the last I saw of them. I’m not worried.

spirituality & the city Kindness and its impact.

Becky Owens The strange thing about tragedy is how it affects the senses. Smells seem more intense, and sounds that were once pleasant, like carefree laughter, can be stress-provoking instead. I remember a few years back while I was living abroad, on a particularly bad day after receiving some crushing news; I’d taken a walk to clear my head. Strapped for cash at the time, I decided to get a small hot chocolate with no extras. It was not what I usually ordered, but it was all I could afford. When it came time to pay, the barista presented me with a large chocolate topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. At first I thought he’d gotten my order wrong, until he wouldn’t accept any money for it. He said I looked like I was having a bad day, so he made my usual order and told me it was on him, I deserved a treat. That seemingly small kindness impacted me more than the barista probably imagined. Every sip was a comfort to my heightened senses, a reassurance. I had gone from feeling isolated, alone, to feeling cared for. It was the best cup of hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted.
Coming from a very poor family, raised by a single mom, you can only believe in life when something good, unexpected, happens to you. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive, it has only to touch your heart. Living on my own since I was 14 years old, every time I felt like I couldn’t go forward, an angel would appear and reload my hopes. My friend’s mom who would invite me for food in their house almost every day, the teacher who gave me a pair of shoes to go for my first job interview, the lady who rented her basement even though she knew I couldn’t pay for it and the many other angels in my life, none of them will be forgotten while I live and every time I think of them, my heart warms and I want to do the same for others. These people were not only meeting my needs, they were helping to build a human being full of gratitude, who would pay it forward. A human being who cannot do bad. Not after all the kindness I had received. All these small acts of kindness together, made of me a very warm person, who learned the art of being grateful and its amazing benefits and nowadays also knows the amazing feeling of being kind to others, hoping they will pay it forward.
Tom Quinn I did a good, random deed for a brother and karma was instantly returned. On the way home that evening I had a blowout on the motorway and couldn’t get my spare tyre out from under the van. To add extra complication my phone had just died without a charger in sight. I was stuck. Then while under the van with hazards on in the dark, I heard a voice say in a friendly familiar accent, “Hello can I help you?”
Standing there were two young Pakistani gentlemen. They made it their mission to get me back on the road. I’d have never done it on my own with missing tools and all. They just wouldn’t give up. Fantastic men helping out a brother. We exchanged humour as we worked and wished each other well on our journeys. Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. Blessings to you both. I’ve been doing good deeds at least once a day ever since.
Deb Davis It was 2001. I was 35. My son had just turned two. My relationship of four years had ended in a very sudden and brutal way. I was on my knees with pain and grief. My father sent me a two-page letter. The letter was poetic from start to finish with the most affi rming words. Amongst them was, “I would remind you that you are in addition to being a fine woman, a fine mother and I am very proud of you.” He also enclosed a cheque with the words “Money doesn’t really heal anything but it seldom does any harm. Enjoy yourself!” With that money I bought a shawl, which I still wear today. As I wrap it around myself I feel the kindness and support of my late father, Gerald Davis.
11 Timmy Flaherty I think I’ve always carried out small acts of kindness for others but it never really impacted my life in a big way. Truth be told; doing little things for others used to be a way of trying to fi ll some void inside of me, even though it never really worked. Thinking people might notice me, like me, tell me I’m of some value etc. Accepting gratitude as a substitute for love. And these things did happen, but I always still had that empty feeling in my heart. Two years ago I reconnected with myself/my heart/ soul/ spirit/Source/God/ Universe, whatever you wanna call it, and now these little acts of kindness towards others have a massive impact on my life. Every positive connection with another soul brings me closer to not only them, but me and Source too. It’s win/win/win. It’s like I’m constantly fi lling up my soul with something divine, then that shows in every area of my life.
Clair Lalor It was a small café. A narrow room with small tables and chairs along one side. My husband had left me months before and I was feeling anxious and getting upset about how to financially support our four daughters. He had no money. Nor did I. I was sitting on my own when my friend Carl entered the cafe and said hello. As we talked, I felt my fears very strongly. In my parents home no one talked about their feelings, so I was not used to it, but the weight inside was great. As I talked, he settled and listened. In that moment, I felt a settling in myself and a deep connection to him. Even though this was over 30 years ago, the impact has not left me. Although much of what I said was far-fetched, he added, “you can count on me to help out”. The world stands still at moments like this, a gap, an opening was fi lled and I felt relief.

soulfully Refine & Manifest Your Dreams
By Andrew Smith
12
To be frank, pursuing a dream can be tough. Sometimes things just flow, with the Muse speaking to you on a frequent basis and serendipity abounds. There are other times when it is just slow, painfully slow. And it is on those latter days that you get to see the depth of your self-belief and in to what you have invested your heart. It is on those days when you don’t feel it, that you would prefer the soft option of procrastination, watching daytime TV or whatever distraction you can muster, that the truth of your commitment is shown and all dreams are tested. Even the ones made mythological by the media. And all you can do is keep going, even if you can no longer feel
So how deep is your faith in your creative process? When things go wrong, what is your default reaction? Do you become emotional and get dramatic? Do you see it as a sign that things are not right, after all if it was perfect everything would be easy? Wouldn’t it? Or do you see it as a necessary process of refinement, serving to test your commitment and resolve and to also bring to light those dimensions of your life no longer working smoothly? Do you take the time to discipline your creativity and to hone and refine it on a daily basis, or have you found yourself prioritising practicalities over inspiration? Do you take the time to

your legs moving and you feel as if you are going through the motions. “I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again.” Oscar Wilde As part of an overall process that helps you to keep on top of your dreams, refining, testing, modifying and manifesting them, the mid-summer reflects a time of taking stock, slowing and reconsidering your effectiveness in living soulfully, spiritually, creatively and inspirationally. The issues arising during this walk through treacle revolve around the delays and ‘setbacks’ that are happening ‘to’ you to force you to slow and gather, to refine and define your creative essence, as you also challenge the depth to which you believe in your Path. This time will pass by mid-July so the obstacles arising should not be read as a sign that you are doing it wrong. They are merely a test to your commitment and to help you shed some of the illusory notions in your life.
define the boundaries of your dream world and to engage in a regular practise of mediation and day dreaming? The power to create from the realm of spirit, bringing your dreams into manifestation lies in defining those ethereal motivations and containing them in the now, as opposed to chasing them as a donkey does a carrot. Any action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn something, in which case it’s no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you learn nothing. So if you feel bereft of inspiration, just move and do something, even if it is a practical chore. Fortunately during this battle between the civil service part of your soul and that hippie that lives with you, the claxon of Truth bellows resoundingly, shaking you to your core, its piercing tone tearing through every pore of your body. Unable to drown out this rude cacophony, you cannot but hear the message of freedom carried on its

clamorous pulsation. The land beneath your feet quivering in consort, you desperately seek relief. Conflict reigns as you fret anxiously over what action to take – will you show up and show forth, or will you continue to live within the façade that you have previously created? Your growth in recent years has resulted in your arrival at this crossroads and as you feel the truth of your inner being, it is increasingly difficult to hide. Keenly aware of the impact your choices will have upon your way of intimately interacting with those closest to you, this tension grows – maintain the status quo or liberate yourself. What does freedom mean to you and are you genuinely free to express your inimical truth is a question that you cannot escape from and that inquest will lead you to explore the bonds that you have forged with those closest to you. Accepting that the only way is to go with this moving wave, following where this vibration takes you is the only option. As August dawns, the commotion far behind you, its sonorous tone carrying you forward, ahead you see a new land, a sanctuary within this storm. Your feet firmly placed on this unfamiliar shore, the intonation finally dissipates, leaving you with nothing but stillness and an incipient world to explore; a world that supports your Truth, a truth you cannot hide; a truth that needs to come out; your Truth. If we are holding the intention that we are shifting our cellular nature to now we are the creative force, to program our cells to be in alignment with divine love and nature and balance, it stands to reason that the cell’s egos might just be fighting that transition. The egos are yelling, “No! Don’t believe it, we have proof. See how much illness there is in the world?” There is no Hallelujah in that, my friends. No victory song. No freedom. Whenever we feel that knee jerk reaction
it, and bring ourselves back into harmony and balance (love-action vs re-action)! We’ve also just created a new word – loveaction. Will your next action be a reaction, or a loveaction? Instead of saying, “I am depressed” and living in that continuing moment, your next question should be, “why?” Know that you want to be an objective observer, and question yourself to mine the gold of you. I am depressed because I had an argument, and that made me sad. It made me sad because I think my relationship is in jeopardy. I don’t want my relationship to be in jeopardy. What did I learn about relationships between conception and age seven? What was modeled to me from my
meet in harmony, and create the child, a.k.a. the creation. The divine idea/ instinct/guidance must be taken out into the world with power by the masculine to successfully create. When that happens, confidence is truly in place. So, ask yourself: do I have a lot of great, inspired ideas that I never do anything with? If the answer is yes, know that you need to balance the masculine so you have more power to deliver your ideas to the world. Or do you push and work and strive doing ANYthing, just to try and create, without a lot of success? Stop and take time to nurture your feminine. Allow your channel to open and receive divine guidance, and then use the power that is in place to radiate that out. Then the creation is automatically in place, and confidence is reinforced. Confidence is not something you get. Confidence is the vibration of knowing that you are. Be the knowing of the Creative Force that is you, and confidence is a no-brainer. Literally.

Stand back and be the observer of your own life. See what is running you and ask has it been running you so much that you have created your life around it. Your belief is to know that, “I am creating all things I want in divine love and harmony with ease and success. Now. 16 everything you need to know about
feng shui but didn’t want to ask. By Amanda Collins
Science has proven that everything is made up of energy. In the Chinese art and science of Feng Shui we call energy Chi. The Egyptians call it Ka, the Hebrew have Ruach, the Japanese have Ki, and the Indians call it Prana. Chi is condensed and dispersed in alternative cycles of positive (Sheng Chi) and negative (Sha Chi) energy, and it manifests in various forms. Chi cannot be destroyed; however, it can be transformed. Energy can be blocked and build up negatively, or it can flow freely, which is what we want in our homes. Feng Shui supports the energy flow in your
environment, which directly impacts the energy flow in your body and thus can unleash more of your energy and vitality. As you read this article, realise that the magazine is comprised of particles of energy; the computer you may be reading this on is exactly the same. The grass, the sun: it’s all energy. Feng Shui translates to wind and water. When we consider the chi of water, we know we drink it, wash with it, we cannot survive without it and we see this as positive energy. However a tsunami can destroy an entire town. Wind is similar. It can feel amazing and caressing
on a warm day. It can be harnessed to create electricity. Yet too much wind can destroy cities. The key is balance. In Feng Shui we differentiate three kinds of chi. First we have heavenly chi, our destiny energy. This is the energy we are born with, the soul agreements we have decided to have before we come into human form. Soul agreements are made with your children, your lover, your mother and so on. When we bring Feng Shui into our lives it does not change these predestined forces and experiences, but it makes what we would perceive as a bad experience less painful, more graceful. Then there is human chi. This is your physical, emotional and mental chi. Feng Shui really supports balance and alignment in your body, feelings and mind. Imagine living in a home that is off-balance. You try self care, perhaps by seeing an acupuncturist who brings your body into balance. But when you return home to a cluttered and imbalanced environment you will likely throw your body, mind and spirit out of alignment again. Lastly we have earth chi. Earth chi includes mountains, water, the climate, and where we are located in this earthly energy. Each of us is unique and has different needs; some people do well in hot weather as others in cool. Feng Shui absolutely supports by connecting us with nature. We spend 80% of our time inside our home or car or office and back again. Many of us have lost that deep connection to nature and the natural rhythms of the earth. Hundreds of years ago people did not have clocks and calendars to tell them when to do things; they would just look up to the sun and the moon and know when to plant their crops. They would speak to the land and intuitively know what herbs would heal various ailments. Feng Shui invites us to connect with Mother Earth, to commune with her, bring her elements inside with plants, water fountains and crystals that harmonise our bodies and ground our energy. We are spiritual beings having human experiences and Feng Shui invites us to create a space that connects the inside and the outside, bringing the colours of nature inside; soft browns, healing greens and blues that remind us of nature’s abundant gifts. smile How a Higher Purpose Helps Everyone. By Sandy Newbigging
Growing up I was petrified of public speaking. So much so that I faked being ill for an entire term at school because I was so scared of having to read out loud in English class. Little did I know at the time that life has a wonderful sense of humour and would have me grow up to not only write books but also speak on stages around the world in front of thousands of people. For me to be able to do the work I do now, despite a conditioned fear of the written word and public presentations, I’ve had to make my purpose to serve others more important than my personal fears. Diving into meditation showed me that the peace that I was seeking for a couple of decades was closer than my next breath and accessible now. That my conscious awareness is already calm and that by being aware of the present moment, through meditation, nothing needs to be fixed, changed or improved before I can experience peace. Discovering this, I simply couldn’t stand by and watch so many people suffering in the world. It became my purpose to remind as many people as possible that peace is possible, not later, but now.
18 Quite accidentally, with the higher purpose of bringing more peace to the planet, my fears didn’t have as much power over me. The old feelings occasionally show up when I’m faced with a book deadline or big speaking event. However, as long as my purpose remains more important than my fear, I continue irrespective. I believe it is no coincidence that having a purpose greater than personal gain and one that is grounded in service to others is key to my progress so far. If it
was all about ‘me’ and ‘my feelings’ then I would’ve quit years ago, or so I believe. Furthermore, I’ve discovered that my quickest path to personal freedom (and enlightenment) is through service to others. That when I am fully engaged in service my ego loses its power to prevent me from fulfilling my purpose. Through your journey of spiritual awakening, you will notice a shift in your motives too. If you are living from the ego, life will tend to be self-centred and there can be a high degree of selfishness involved.
“It became my purpose to remind as many people as possible that peace is possible, not later, but now.”
This is largely down to being unaware of the inner presence of peace, love and joy and needing to control life so you can get these positive states from external sources. Unaware of the perfection within, you can end up living in states of fear and separation that can drive you to ruthlessly do whatever it takes to improve things and feel better. With force and without care or concern about the impact on others or the planet, without a service-orientated
mindset you can end up pursuing materialistic purposes linked to external success and the accumulation of power, possessions and prestige. Selfishness is replaced by selflessness as one awakens. By engaging less in the ego-based concerns and conditioning and recognising that we are all one within consciousness, your focus and actions come from an inner space of love and service. You become passionate about how you can bring peace,
prosperity and positivity to the lives of others and the planet as a whole. “What can I get?” changes to “What can I give and how can I be of service?” I believe this desire to ‘pay it forward’ is one of the most beautiful by-products to come from discovering the peace available within through meditation. 20 how we faced
adversity From Crisis to New Beginnings.
by Dr. Evelien van Amerongen In December 2015, the perpetual rain, high tide and raging storms came and laid siege to Westport. Our dental centre at Barrack Yard was flooded and turned into a little Venice. All the rooms were submerged and all the equipment and fixtures were lost. We had to close the centre and suspend any dental treatment and therapies.
comprehensive integrative health centre where people can reconnect with their full potential and becoming more self reliant and proactive in their own wellbeing, we visualised, through meditation, a premises big enough to have all our therapies available under one roof. In the beginning of the New Year the premises presented itself. And with a big “thank you” the centre relocated to Aghagower, near the town of Westport, and reopened under the new name Ishsko Wellness Centre. The new premises overlooks the holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, and benefits from its tranquil vibration. The Red Wooden House creates a perfect ambiance, which is relaxing, vibrant and welcoming. Our patients have expressed their relief in visiting a space where they can take part in a healing experience that is far way from that in the traditional cold and clinical dental office. The Ishsko Wellness Centre offers Biological metal free dentistry and safe mercury filling replacement under a strict IAOMT safety protocol and a full range of detox support therapies. In addition to the therapies, the Centre has installed a 6-technology detox suite. You can now book the suite for the two hour 30 minute session as a stand
“We visualised, through meditation, a premises big enough to have all our therapies available under one roof.” Despite all the hard work in cleaning up the sludge and post-flood mess over the Christmas period, the whole team stayed in a positive frame of mind. Strangely enough, we had been trying to move premises as our business had outgrown Barrack Yard. But we were always met with obstacles regarding planning permission, which had put a halt to any of our opportunities to move to a larger centre. After the flood, however, the tune changed and we were contacted by the local constituency office and the Enterprise Board with offers of help. Inspired by my aim to create a
alone treatment or as part of a three day course to expel those toxins that are otherwise hard to eliminate through the liver. The detox suite encompasses our medically induced hyperthermia (fever) mud bath, and EMF neutral Far Infra Red Sauna. These technologies push stagnant blood from deep in the organs, to the surface of the skin. There you are swaddled in blankets and placed on the recliners to sweat the toxins out. While sipping our Demeter Organic Detox Smoothies, you are placed on the vibro-acoustic and Avalon light pads for a deep massage to encourage lymph flow. This is certainly a whole new idea of how a trip to the dentist’s should be experienced. You might consider this when you’re reading copies of Hello from 1987 at your next check up waiting for your regular dentist to see you. It is hard to believe that just a few short months ago, we seemed to be facing disaster. This will always serve to remind me that many times when we experience challenges, such as the one we went through after the storms had ravaged our little clinic, it is often to push us to greater things. We hope you will visit us in our beautiful new home on the foothills of Croagh Patrick. mercuryfreedentistry.eu

the truth tatiana Kovalenko shares her story of time spent with Mooji.
In Rishikesh the river Ganga zigzags gracefully through a valley of the Himalayan foothills. It’s coincidental that it was one of the zigzags of my own life which brought me to a satsang with Mooji, affectionately known as Guruji or Mooji Baba, about 11 years ago in Dublin. That satsang all those years ago gave a new direction to the flow of my life and eventually brought me to Rishikesh earlier this year. Every winter, Mooji Baba offers satsang in this holy city attracting people from all over the world who want to come and sit in his presence. Having a poor standard of living does not deter these pilgrims, and so when I learned that many Russian speakers were planning to attend and that there was a plan to offer simultaneous interpretation, I felt compelled to offer my help as a Russian interpreter. When I arrived at Swami Swatantranand Ashram, where Mooji Baba’s satsangs would be held, I was surprised by the interpreters’ room behind the satsang hall, as it didn’t look like anything I was used to: there were no soundproof booths, no switchboards with glowing red “on-air” buttons and no microphones. Instead our equipment consisted of headphones and mobile phone mics. The room was in a dilapidated building with a bare cement floor, a few tables and no insulation whatsoever. Through large gaps in the walls, sounds of welding work from the adjacent workshop pierced the air. Having looked around, I went into a panic; would I have to sit next to a Chinese interpreter and talk over her? Would I be able to concentrate in this environment? Would this actually work? After coming together as a team and chanting the mantra Om, I remembered that this was no ordinary operation. I had come to do service that had been blessed by Guruji and I knew
22
that everything was going to work out beautifully. The next day I was sitting in the room with headphones on, listening to the reverberation of Guruji’s words in my heart and following his gestures on the TV screen which was streaming live from the hall. We resembled an orchestra, with Nirvana and Yasmine, our two coordinators, moving among us as conductors, giving us signs to raise or lower our voices. Each interpreter would echo each sentence pronounced by Mooji Baba in our own language, gesticulating and sometimes chuckling at his jokes. It hardly felt as if I was the one doing the speaking, and somehow instead of feeling distracted by the other’s voices, I was strengthened by their presence. For the first two days I felt a slight discomfort moving around the ashram, sensing the serenity of others and having to face their direct gazes into my eyes. As if having heard me, during satsang Mooji mentioned that people need time to “defrost” when coming into this unique environment. Two quotes I saw posted in the ashram pointed me in the right direction: “Be fully in your heart, otherwise whatever you do will be merely average or, at best, impressive – not miraculous, not magnificent. Only when you surrender the ego with all your heart will you enter the realm of the divine.” “Meet everyone as if you were meeting God.” These quotes made me think, and suddenly my habit of thinking and communicating with people mechanically became immediately noticeable. The effective rationalism so praised in our civilised world, often accompanied by coldness of the heart, became so apparent and unbearable to me. Every morning for two hours of satsang we passed Guruji’s words through
ourselves–being guided by him and guiding our fellow countrymen into their hearts. We found ourselves laughing inwardly at his jokes, anticipating with excitement a good story or being fascinated by an insight that would need to be pondered over sitting by the Ganga later that day. We continued interpreting, with Nirvana and Yasmine making the space more beautiful and comfortable each day: first linen tablecloths on our tables, then rugs covering the cold floor, then a shoe rack, then a garland of flowers was placed on the monitor and finally the walls were covered with egg cartons–soundproof system Indian style. Around 60 Russian speakers listened to my interpretation in the satsang hall each day and many more watched from home through the live broadcast. People were coming to us with hugs expressing their gratitude–some of them able to understand the entire satsang in their own language for the very first time. Every minute in Guruji’s presence, the evidence of living Truth, is treasured - be it during lunch, a spontaneous satsang in the afternoon or simply when he is passing by. I discussed with my new friend from California how tempting it is to see Master, who is showing the way to liberation, as a physical form and cling to it, as if it is possible to attach yourself to freedom itself. With time, though, his presence is revealed in one’s own heart. Whenever I see people around Guruji, I always think they are the most beautiful beings of this planet–from different parts of the globe, but all shining the same light. It is such a joy to be in service in the ashram environment. Now as I am sitting back home I wonder, can I continue like this outside?

Attempting to understand consciousness with your mind is like trying to illuminate the sun with a candle. Even if you became an astronaut and discovered other planets, it would not be as great as discovering your own Self right here on earth. Life cannot be against you for you are life itself. Life can only seem to go against the ego’s projections, which are rarely in harmony with Truth. When you live guided by intuition rather than thought, your life dances like writing on water, fresh and untraceable.

voice CELL NUTrITION
By Aisling O’Toole need to be nourished with all the nutrients they require, including those found within the sea. This principle formed the very basis of Cellnutrition, with its earliest advocates being discovered in 1907 when Mr Quinton opened his first clinic in Paris. Mothers queued for treatment, and Mr Quinton went on to help hundreds of children suffering from poverty-related diseases such as malnutrition, infant cholera and gastrointestinal infections. Mr Quinton died in 1925, and since then the medical industry has gone to discover even more about mineral health and discover more about his remarkable discoveries. We now know that his marine plasma contains 78 minerals and trace elements in perfect proportions for our bodies. We know that these minerals
24 In the early 1900s, a French scientist called René Quinton drained the blood from his dog and replaced it with seawater. The dog not only survived the transfusion but two days later, half of its normal blood components had been regenerated. After four days his blood was back to normal and before the week was out, the dog had returned to full health and was energetically bounding around the laboratory. The dog’s name was Sodium, which seems quite appropriate given the nature of the fluid that had saved him, and he went on to live for another five years, seemingly unaffected by having once had seawater coursing through his veins. This tale was no pet horror story and Mr Quinton was no mad scientist. In fact, he was a celebrated biologist and physiologist who is credited with saving hundreds of thousands of lives in the early 20th Century by treating them with the same seawater as he did Sodium. This wasn’t just any old seawater scooped up in a bucket down at his local beach, rather it was drawn from mineral-rich plankton blooms of the north Atlantic which Mr Quinton had identified as having a near identical chemical
“Sodium may have departed for the great kennel in the sky but he and his master’s legacy lives on.” composition to human blood. This discovery later became his Law of Marine Constancy, which stated that in order for an evolving organism to successfully leave the ocean, it has to take this lifesupporting solution with it; therefore, Mr Quinton summized, our internal body terrain has evolved from the sea. He discovered a variety of vortex blooms in this water which contained the same trace elements and minerals as those found in the body, but at three times the concentration. From here, Mr Quinton created an isotonic version of this marine plasma by diluting his mixture with natural spring water, specially chosen to match the pH level of the human body This work developed and further highlighted Mr Quinton’s belief that for our bodies to regenerate and fortify, they
and trace elements are key to our health. We know that the trillions of cells in our bodies need a combination of different minerals to function properly and support our overall health. We know that without the right minerals in the correct proportions our bodies are not able to make proper use of other key nutrients. In an age of plenty but where diets suffer because of the impact intensive modern farming has on the nutritional value of both our soil and our food, Mr Quinton’s groundbreaking discovery offers a solution to supplementing this mineral shortage. Sodium may have departed for the great kennel in the sky but he and his master’s legacy lives on.

tantra moments fEEL YOUR ECSTATIC FLOW
By Dawn Cartwright
Channeling Ecstatic Energy In Your Body & In Your Life There’s nothing more alluring than the illuminative quality of ecstatic energy. It is the light of our being. It’s a current that flows between us and all the mysteries of life. Ancient Tantric sages called this energy, Shakti, a Sanskrit word that means power. They spent their lives learning to harness this energy and channel it through their bodies to merge with the divine. There are many compelling ways to channel ecstatic energy through the body and into our lives. In this Tantra Moment, we’ll channel ecstatic energy using sound.
Channeling Ecstatic Energy Practice Find a place in the sun or by the warmth of the fire where you can lie down comfortably. A place where you will not be disturbed. Give yourself 5-10 minutes to simply relax and let go. When you feel ready, place your hands on your belly, on the soft round area just below your navel. Open to this; the centre of your sensuality, the seat of your power. Breathe softly into the space beneath your hands, bringing yourself closer to the feelings inside. In the beginning, you may feel very little. With practice, the body begins to trust and
26
What does ecstatic energy feel like? Here’s a mini-practice to bring you in touch with your own ecstatic energy: 1 Close your eyes. 2 Remember a positive experience that was meaningful to you, a moment in nature, with friends or family, or it might be a fantastic day at work, or a time when you were expressing your creativity, any experience at all where you felt positivity. 3 Take 3 relaxing breaths. 4 Smile. (Yes, smile with your eyes closed) 5 Notice how you feel. 6 This is your ecstatic energy, the aliveness that you’re feeling right now. 7 Yes, it’s as simple as that. With practice, these feelings will grow. You’ll begin to discover there are many moments of ecstasy in your life. The more you give yourself time to connect with your ecstatic energy, the more it will grow. Then, one day you will find what the Tantric sages have known all along, every feeling and experience has the potential to be meaningful, even ecstatic, if we only open our heart and truly feel it.
sensations will grow. Meet yourself as you would meet a lover, with understanding and acceptance. Take your time, allow the gentle stirrings of sensation in your belly to gently glow like embers of a fire. Then, place your feet flat on the ground and bring your attention to your spine. Imagine a clock on your sacrum, the flattened area at the base of your lower spine. Twelve o’clock is nearest your head, six o’clock, nearest your tail. Slowly roll your sacrum forward and back between twelve and six o’clock. Release any tension in your legs, neck and face. Breathe naturally and easily, allowing the undulations of the lower spine to spread to every vertebrae from your tail to your head. Explore this wavelike movement for 5-10 minutes. Your spine is a channel for ecstatic energy, a neurological super-highway that connects and enlivens every part of you. When your spine is open and fluid, your ecstatic energy can flow more easily, connecting you with your passion, creativity, power, love, expression, wisdom and spirit. Imagine this channel in your spine. Imagine your breathing pouring up and down it. Feel the sensations that arise when you are this present, this awake to feeling. Then, take a
“There are many compelling ways to channel ecstatic energy through the body and into our lives.” full breath and sound “Ah”, the full length of the exhale, the full length of your spine. Sound until you are completely empty and the breath rushes in on the inhale. Sound with every breath. Send the sound up and down your spine, your super-highway to ecstasy. Continue for 10-15 minutes, then rest. What did you discover? Dawn Cartwright is a Tantric visionary, sacred writer, world traveler, and innovator in bio-energetic Tantra fusion. You have a terrific life story – tell us about how you came to decide that you were an artist? It was just a calling. I had an impulse to write. I went to Georgetown University. They had a newspaper where they didn’t allow women to write. They wanted us to bake cookies! I didn’t like that and I wrote a manifesto calling for equality. This was back in 1966 and it was a very turbulent time in America between the sexes. I was responsible for starting a women’s group on campus and I started drawing cartoons and writing these feisty, fiery pieces and out of that came the impulse to keep writing. I had a wonderful professor named Roland Flint who didn’t have prejudice against women and I began writing poetry for him. The poems started getting published and that reinforced my calling.
Do you still feel strongly about feminism? I think The Artist’s Way has been a great teacher for me. That men suffer equally was not something I was brought up to believe. But when I started teaching creative unblocking, I found that men had as many difficulties as women. It did a lot to level the playing field. I would say that my habit of writing manifestoes is what lead me to writing The Artist’s Way. It was intended as a manifesto in favour of all artists, male or female.
You ended up married to Martin Scorsese and hanging out with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg before you’d all hit the big time. When I met Martin, I had been asked to write about him. Martin was directing Taxi Driver and he gave me the script to read and I thought it needed some tweaking and so I went ahead and tweaked. He shot my changes and they came out wonderfully and that was the beginning of my involvement with movies. I would say that I was very lucky to know the circle that I knew and I was very much in love with Martin and I subsequently fell in love with his work. This might seem old-fashioned, but when I married Martin, I felt it was my duty to be a helpmate. In this case, being a helpmate involved creativity.
You say that artists are inclined to help each other naturally rather than compete. I’ll give you a good example of this. Originally Schindler’s List was a Martin Scorsese script. Martin worked to shape the script and get the balance correct. Then he gave the script to Steven Spielberg. Not many people know that Martin was involved with that script. It was an act of great generosity and faith that he gave it to Steven and never said a word of this publicly.

Julia Cameron is the creator of The Artist’s Way, a book which has inspired tens of thousands of artists to creatively unblock since its publication almost 25 years ago. Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico in an adobe house halfway up a mountain, surrounded by Piñon and Juniper trees, at 70 years of age she continues to write and teach and inspire. She tells us of her early years, her marriage to Martin Scorsese with whom she had a daughter (Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, who is about to release her first feature film as a director). She also talks about recovering from an alcohol problem and being guided on a spiritual path. I caught up with her while she was in New York on her way to teach a three day workshop in Massachusetts.

writing again, trying to let a higher force work through me and when I did, my writing took off. I began to have the experience of a higher power as a real force and so I wrote and started to sell movies and began to flourish. Then I had a movie that I wrote, that went from being described as brilliant until suddenly I couldn’t get anyone on the phone. I was stymied and I was frustrated and I prayed for guidance walking in Greenwich Village in New York. I heard the word ‘teach’. I thought, ‘I don’t want to teach, I want to make art’. So I called up a girlfriend I had at the time and told her what happened. She said she’d call me right back. Fifteen minutes later, she called me back and said ‘congratulations, you are now on the faculty of the New York Feminist Arts Institute – your first class meets Thursday!
You reference Dylan Thomas’s beautiful line that ascribes divinity to “the force that through the green fuse drives the flower” How do you think that force manifests in your life? The basic tools of The Artist’s Way
The Artist’s Way gives us some basic tools to unblock our creativity. The first she calls The Morning Pages, which are three longhand stream of consciousness pages designed to clear the mind for inspiration. The second, she calls The Artist’s Date, which is a playful excursion taken weekly to make the world more festive and friendly. In more recent years, she has added a third tool of Walking, which is used to integrate the insights gathered from using the other two tools. The Artist’s Way is a 12 week course that can be followed alone by using her book. There are also many Artist’s Way groups around the country that meet and do the course together. Julia calls these groups, creative clusters, and she allows anyone to teach her methods freely, offering guidance to any and all who seek the creative life.
How do you feel that this kind of attitude of service is linked to creativity? When we ask to be of service, we are given freedom. We find ourselves being more generous, and out of generosity comes more creativity. So it’s sort of a circle. I find when I teach, which I do often, that I ask God to give me candour, humour, service and wisdom. Then I am often surprised by what comes out. It is although the Great Creator has put words in my mouth.
In January of 1978 you stopped drinking. How did this lead you to discovering The Artist’s Way? I drank from the age of 19 until 29. When I was drinking, I worked very hard for my writing to be clever. I wasn’t trying to be of service to anyone except my brilliant career. Then in 1978, I faced the fact that I had an alcohol problem and I needed a way to write sober without scotch as a lubricant or a reward. So I had two friends who said to me “try to let the universe write through you” and I thought, “well, what if it doesn’t want to?” I put a little note in my writing area that said, “Okay God – you take care of the quality and I’ll take care of the quantity”. Then I began

I recently found myself guided to write a book of prayers and I was worried as I felt that they were too short. I thought, surely they should be longer and more complicated. I finally called my publisher and told him that, behind my own back, I have written a book of prayers. He wanted to hear them, but I assured him that he wouldn’t like them. I read him some of the prayers and he said ‘they’re perfect short, Julia, this is the age of Twitter. I wrote another collection that isn’t published in Ireland called ‘Prayers to the Great Creator’. It has four separate books in it and I read the last one, which is called Answered Prayers nightly. When I read it, I think “who wrote that?” People ask me was The Artist’s Way channelled? I don’t use that expression, but I do feel that I was guided in writing it and I feel that I am guided still. I think that the Dylan Thomas quotation, still to me seems like an accurate description of the Higher Power. That it is a tremendous creative energy that is eager to be expressed and that as we cooperate with it, by writing our morning pages, going for walks, doing our artist’s dates, we sort of make ourselves open to guidance. I am sometimes afraid that is sounds a little too woowoo. Then I say, “try writing morning pages and just experiment”, and as they do they find synchronous doors opening. I have often heard of the morning pages being described as ‘a portal to faith’.
Do you have any connection to Ireland and what advice would you bestow on our readers in Ireland looking to live the creative life? I do have an Irish connection. My mother’s maiden name was Shea. It was shortened from O’Shea. I grew up celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. My daughter even spent her junior year in Trinity. But, in answer to your question, I would tell them to do their morning pages and follow where they lead. Julia Cameron continues to write, teach and inspire. She was keen to talk about her daughter’s new movie ‘Almost Paris’ and to praise other artists who she met along the way including Daniel Region and her long-time collaborator, Emma Lively. It is this generosity of spirit and joy in the success of others which makes her such a wonderful ambassador for the concepts of kindness and service. It was a privilege to have an opportunity to speak with her. juliacameronlive.com

by Raymond Cadwell. B.soc.Sc, M.Litt, M.A.Ph.D.
For reasons which I still do not fully understand, in October of 2012, I was drawn to attend a six-day course in Biomagnetic Therapy given by Dr. Goiz in San Francisco. It was an incredibly intensive programme. Dr. Goiz had the habit of demonstrating his technique everyday from 5pm-7pm after a demanding day of theory, with patients from our course and from the city itself. I remember one golden moment when a little five year old girl, looking pale and depleted, struggled with great difficulty and effort towards the stage, assisted by her loving father and mother who carried her in their arms up onto the stage and onto the treatment table. Dr. Goiz treated her and found a number of parasites, bacteria and viruses, one of which was Epstein Barr. He depolarised these using the magnets (Biomagnetic Force). When she got up from the treatment table she smiled at Dr. Goiz, hugged him and then proceeded to walk without aid the whole length of the room, smiling at us all. There was hardly a dry eye in the room. It would take a heart of stone not to melt. He treated many other cases explaining the theory and practice with each new patient. The evidence for the efficacy of his method was hard to ignore.
“When I stood up, I felt as if a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders”
Sceptical But I still remained sceptical. Maybe it was a set up. How could this be real? I was still doubtful, but I felt compelled to try it for myself. When he asked for volunteers, I saw my opportunity and put up my hand. “Well Raymond, what is your issue?” he asked. “Eczema and chronic blocked nose for many years,” I quickly replied. I felt nothing special during the treatment, but when I stood up I felt as if a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. My mind was clear and much to my surprise my nose was free of the blockage. Needless to say when I awoke the next morning the lesions on my skin were almost dispersed and never reoccurred since. My first-hand experience convinced me that this was real though unbelievable. It was a physical healing, but also a healing for my doubts.
My First Patient One of my first clients was a young mother who had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and had lost her sight. As a result, she could no longer work or drive or play with her children. When she returned home she texted to say: “I can see shapes.” Two days later her vision had improved. After four more sessions, her sight had returned and she went back to work. Her scans showed that the lesions in the brain had become inactive and had healed. Her doctors said it was remission but she wrote the story of her experiences on our website claiming that Biomagnetic Therapy gave her life back to her. biomagnetism.ie

tune in, reconnect &
regenerate Sustainable Solutions. By Davie Philip In this hyper-connected age, we live in an increasingly fragmented world. Our shared story is one of widening separation from ourselves, our communities and from nature. This is one of the major causes of the problems we face today and, if we are to make a transition to a fair, resilient and low carbon society, our culture’s guiding narrative of disconnection has to change. Twenty years ago I was a 30-year-old mature student going through somewhat of a breakthrough in my thinking. I had arrived in Ireland from Asia where I had spent 18 months on a journey of self discovery; having my worldview radically refocused. There I began to realise that my true being, my highest self, is connected to everything else. It is such a cliché, but I started to sense that all is ultimately one. That taste was transformational but it wasn’t the breakthrough that I’d experience a year later. With a deep sense of interconnectedness I was having a great life, literally surfing the waves of change on the west coast of Ireland, but I was lacking purpose, very dissatisfied with society and virtually unemployable. I had lots of ideas but no context and no idea what to do next, so I signed up to study anthropology at The National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
“With a deep sense of interconnectedness I was having a great life, literally surfing the waves of change on the west coast of Ireland” I’ve always liked the Woody Allen quote: “Students achieving Oneness will move on to Twoness.” I wasn’t a great student but I was hungry to understand the world and my place in it. Fortunately on my first year reading list was Richard Douthwaite’s book The Growth Illusion: How Economic Growth has Enriched the Few, Impoverished the Many, and Endangered the Planet. This changed everything. The breakthrough was really getting the concept of ‘sustainability’, not just our impact on the planet and the injustice of our economy, but the way Richard described sustainable development from the perspective of co-operation and interdependence. As well as protecting the environment, they emphasised solidarity, the strengthening of beneficial relationships and the nurturing of community. A new perspective was needed, whole systems thinking. This resonated so much with my experiences in India and I was on fire. I had found my purpose. I now had direction and understood where I could contribute. Since then I have been
34 involved in countless projects for a better world, and worked with some of the field’s leading activists and thought leaders. In recent years I’ve been based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, which, as well as being an amazing place to live, is a rich learning environment for developing competencies in resilience and systems thinking. One of the things we teach is permaculture, a design process based on systems thinking for regenerating our land and culture. It could be defined as the art of maximising beneficial relationships. I have found that this collection of tools and practices can really help us build resilience, help make our communities flourish and regenerate our land. We all need to participate in the transformation so tune in, reconnect, and regenerate. there’s thriving When it comes to life expectancy, 30% may be down to genetics, but the other 70% is down to us. It’s easy to enhance your quality of life. by Colleen Kennedy
If you’re interested in enhancing your quality of life as you age, read on. Energy levels tend to decline as we age. We are effectively slowly deteriorating from youth to old age as we become more susceptible to the negative effects of stress, physically, mentally and emotionally. But don’t allow this notion to let you rest on your laurels. It is a fact of life that we age, but we can slow down this process and improve our quality of life by changing how we deal with the stressors. Why do certain cultures enjoy longer life expectancies than others? Various hotspots around the world have been identified in a worldwide study undertaken by National Geographic and some of the best longevity researchers in the US. These areas have been named
Blue Zones, where it’s not uncommon to see people living active healthy lives beyond 100 years. The original zones are the Italian island of Sardinia; the Greek island of Ikaria, known as the island where people forget to die; Loma Linda in California, home to the Seventh-Day Adventists; Okinawa in Japan and Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. What do these areas have in common, besides their sandy beaches and turquoise seas of course? People living in these areas experience less stress and more socialising; they put a strong emphasis on family; they eat a fresh natural plant based diet with very little red meat; they exercise daily; and they live their lives with a sense of purpose and a strong spiritual belief system.
In other words, they live a naturopathic life. There’s nothing too difficult to achieve here, it’s just a balanced way of life which sees people respect themselves and their surroundings. So, although 30% of our life expectancy is down to genetics, the other 70% is up to us and we can help ourselves slow down the ageing process through good nutrition and the use of herbal medicine. We see from above that a fresh, plant-based diet is the way to go, but why? Plants, as our primary fodder, provide us with numerous phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants; which are top of the list of specific anti-ageing ingredients as they offset free radical damage to the cells. Research now
verifies that plant-based diets reduce our risk of degenerative diseases and provide our cells with fuel for renewal, protection and optimum functioning. What is of equal importance is the reduction of stress in our daily lives. It is as much a physical metabolic process as it is an emotional one. Stress will basically interfere with how your body metabolises your food into energy. Even if you are eating a great diet, you may not be absorbing all those wonderful nutrients due to the stress levels in your body, leaving you tired and irritable. So we do need to take the foot off the gas a little, breath and relax, learn to laugh at ourselves and take time out to socialise with others. Herbal medicine has a bounty of plants that help us adapt to the stressors around us. Sometimes we cannot change a situation but we can change our way of dealing with it. Categories that are of importance here include Adaptogens, Nervines and Bitters. Adaptogens are numerous and help our endocrine systems bring a balance back into our lives, support the adrenal glands and enhance our immune activity, strengthening us from the core.
CNM
Ones I use commonly in my clinic are Ashwaganda, Damiana, Siberian Ginseng, Shatavari, Reishi, and Tulsi. Nervines are a category that support our nervous system, help us to unwind, also relax our musculoskeletal system and our digestion. Some of my favourites are Skullcap, Oats, Passionflower and Valerian. Bitters These are herbs which stimulate the bitter receptors on the tongue, thereby stimulating a cascade of digestive secretions through the gastro-intestinal tract. Our native Dandelion root is a fine example of this type of herb.
“We do need to take the foot off the gas a little and learn to laugh at ourselves”
Each herb has an affinity with different aspects and areas of our body. It is short sighted to pin an ailment to a single herb, because that single herb will have numerous actions from the various phytochemicals therein, that will exert some physiological change within the body and may interact positively or negatively with other herbs and/or medications. Because we all react differently to our various stressors it can be useful to

strawberries delicious dairy-free strawberry torte by James Burke
While I am writing this, I have no idea of what the coming season holds. One fact I do know, is that even if the weather doesn’t live up to my hopes, the locally grown strawberries surely will. I can honestly say that I have tasted strawberries from all over the world and none have I experienced like the softly sweet and luxurious berries that are grown outdoors during the Irish summer season. In the past, I preferred fresh strawberries rather than heated or cooked ones. Nowadays, I have changed my thinking and it is all because of the food dehydrator. These magic machines gently remove a large amount of the water content, but none of the flavour or nutrients. Using 300 grams of fresh berries will leave the following torte a little soggy, but I need
that amount for the maximum flavour. That is where the idea for drying them came from. For those who don’t have access to a food dehydrator, I have also included instructions on how to dry them in a regular oven. Otherwise, you can use freeze-dried strawberries in this recipe and they are available in whole or powdered form. Strawberries, white chocolate and vanilla are an obvious combination of course, but the twist here is that this dessert is completely dairy-free. Traditional white chocolate contains cocoa butter, dairy milk, and sweetener so we use cocoa butter, coconut cream and agave. It’s like summer in the form of a torte!
Strawberry, White Chocolate and Vanilla Torte Makes 8 portions Filling 300g (2 cups strawberries) or 8g of strawberry powder 30ml (2 tablespoons) lemon juice, about 1 medium lemon 100g (½ cup) cocoa butter 150g (¾ cup) coconut cream 200g (¾ cup) agave syrup ½ teaspoon vanilla powder or the seeds from 1 vanilla pod ¼ teaspoon sea salt
Photo: emma loughran
Crust 160g blanched or whole almonds lightly toasted or dehydrated 30g (2 tablespoons) ground flax seeds 30g (2 tablespoons) poppy seeds 14g (2 tablespoons) cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon sea salt 160g (1 cup) raisins 1 Prepare the strawberries by removing the green stem and slicing them thinly. Place them in a bowl and pour the lemon juice over. Use your hands to gently mix the strawberries and lemon juice together then place onto a dehydrator sheet and dry at 40° Celsius for about two hours. This can also be done in a regular oven, see note below, or else skip this step altogether and purchase yourself a bag of freeze-dried strawberries. 2 Measure the cocoa butter and coconut cream into a bowl and place over a small saucepan of gently simmering water to melt. This will take about 15 to 20 minutes. Once melted, add the agave syrup, vanilla powder or seeds, then salt and keep the mixture warm until the strawberries are ready. 3 To make the crust, place the almonds, and cocoa powder into a food processor fitted with an “S” blade and blitz to a fine powder. Add the ground flax seeds, poppy seeds and process briefly to thoroughly mix. Next, add the raisins and process for about a minute until the mixture resembles sticky breadcrumbs.
Remove and place it into a 20cm/8” tin. Press it tightly into the tin to form the torte base. Set the crust aside until the rest of the ingredients are ready and clean the food processor to remove most of the sticky ingredients as you will need it again to make the filling. 4 To finish the torte filling, remove the strawberries from the dehydrator and check the weight. They should now have reduced down to weigh about 150g or 1 cup in measurement. Add the melted cocoa butter, coconut cream, agave, vanilla and salt to the food processor and blitz for about 30 seconds. Stop the machine and scrape down the sides of the food processor bowl with a spatula. Process again for another 30 seconds or so until the mixture is smooth and silky. Now, add the strawberries and process again for about another 30 seconds until puréed. Pour the filling ingredients onto the prepared crust and place into a fridge for about 8 hours to chill and to set. 5 Once the torte has set, it is ready to eat, and it is at its best when removed from the fridge an hour before serving.
Notes To dry in a regular oven, heat the oven to the lowest setting, which should be about 75 to 100 Celsius/167 to 212 Fahrenheit, and spread the strawberries and lemon juice onto a lined baking sheet. Bake for about 30 minutes until they have semi dried, and reduced to 150g/1 cup as called for in the recipe. Another alternative is to use freeze-dried strawberries which are now available in many heath food shops, specialist food stores and can also be mail ordered online. cornucopia.ie

short & sweet 43 Violet and Red Rebalancing Your Body’s Energy Systems. By Frances Flannery Amethyst as a colour has long been associated with spirituality, transformation, calming and soothing. It is known as the healer’s colour. But on a physical level the stone itself has the ability to amplify light and heat. In the practice of colour therapy, amethyst is often used to help balance feelings of grief and loss and to bring about resolution relating to anyone who is in your life in
spirit or who has passed. It may allow hidden anger to surface and be dealt with on a very deep level. Red is to do with awakening, our will to live, grounding, courage and practicality. It is the fire in our bellies that impels us to do that which we need to do. But when this colour is imbalanced it can lead to tiredness and anger. The V-Mat Biomat makes use of
these natural properties. It is made of two layers. The lower layer consists of far infra-red heat panels and the top layer is 22lbs of pure amethyst crystals. Using a switch, the device is plugged in and heats up. Once the crystals in the mat become hot, you lie on it. What you are experiencing is a deep rebalancing of the body’s energy systems. Perhaps that is to do with the Violet and Red working together in colour therapy. biomat.ie

Food of The Gods Chocolate As Nature Intended. In 2008, Canadian-born Allison Roberts was elected to represent Fairtrade Ireland on a trip to visit cocoa farms in Ghana. “I came home buzzing. The small co-operative farms, the cocoa growing fresh on the trees and the amazing community movements that sprung from these places.” It was a life-changing experience. Allison had started her first chocolate business at age twelve, selling at markets and in the schoolyard, growing to become passionate about the ethics and impact of her trade. Now working directly from Ghanaian Fairtrade beans, she is more passionate than ever about the potential for chocolate as a vehicle for social change. As the only chocolate maker in Ireland focusing entirely on using alternatives to refined sugar, she is dedicated to reclaiming chocolate as “food of the gods from it’s current role as a ‘naughty indulgence’!” Bridgestone’s Sally & John McKenna describe Allison as “one of that tiny handful of people in Ireland who are changing the world”, because of her commitment to Fairtrade, biodegradable packaging, alternative employment models and a pledge to continue investing time and resources into local community initiatives. So what’s next for Clonakilty Chocolate? “The dream is to be able to create a chocolate-factory-cum-communitybicycle-cafe in the town centre! In the nearer future we’re looking forward to being a part of some more amazing festivals this summer including the Airfield Food Festival, Electric Picnic’s ‘Theatre of Food’ and the Ballymaloe Lit Fest.” clonakiltychocolate.com
Isn’t it wonderful that we live in a body that is always trying its best for us. Even when we are in physical misalignment or discomfort, our body is trying to find our greatest ease in that moment. Every minute of every day we have this wonderful friend, helping us manage through the various injuries and strains and stresses of our daily lives. Even more amazing is how our body takes a strain from an injured or stuck area and redistributes it with no conscious thought required. We are so intricately and perfectly formed that each area of our body is affected by, and in turn affects, every other area. An Irish Summer
One thing it’s easy to forget in an
From heatwave to monsoon. Irish summer is suncream. Sunburn at by Gavin Ryan I just love lying out in the sun with a good book and some music playing. Now that the summer is here, I’ll be grabbing every opportunity that comes my way. If you see me down by the seaside with my swimming togs, umbrella and woolly hat, you’ll know that I’m ready for anything the Irish summer can throw at me.
any age is no fun. Staying hydrated and knowing how best to avoid sunburn ensures you can make the most of those precious days outside in nature. Here’s a handy formula when you’re trying to work out how much suncream you need for you and your family: Skin’s own protection time x sun protection factor (SPF). For example, for fair skin this means approx. 10 min x SPF 20 = 200 min= 3 hours of sun exposure time.

Yoga Fun With Children Simple asanas for kids. By Cristin Tighe
46 Here are some great poses for children. Kids love yoga and it’s a great way to channel their energy to create joy and relaxation.
1 Cat/Cow - on hands and knees, breathe out as you drop your head, looking towards the legs, while arching up the back. Reverse, breathing in, with tail up, belly down and eyes upward. Moving the spine this way supports the nervous system and energy flow. 2 Dog/Donkey - from hands and knees, lift your bottom upward (make yourself a pyramid shape). Lengthen your body from fingers to tail, and from tail to feet with deep breaths. For fun, spread your fingers wide and kick the feet up to sky, using your hands to balance. Inversions (head below heart) like this one are great for physical health. 3 Mountain/Tree - stand with your feet parallel, hips over feet, shoulders over hips, looking forward. Root down and raise your arms straight above your shoulders. Breathe in and out several times. Lift one foot and place the sole inside the other leg to balance. Don’t forget to reverse this pose to maintain alignment. Standing poses align the spine and body and balancing helps body awareness. 4 Standing Forward Bend/Rag Doll – with feet hip-width apart, fold forward from the hips, letting your head relax. You can grab your opposite elbows with your hands and swing from side-to-side, as you breathe. This exercise is great to slow down and stretch the whole back body. Cristin Tighe comes annually to Ireland to train children’s yoga teachers. She’s offering training in July in Cork and Kilkenny. kidsandyoga.com
A Force of Nature Supplements That Harness Superfoods. By Stephen Terrass Terranova was really born out of my concerns about the misguided pharmaceutical mentality that had permeated the supplement industry since the mid-1980s. These concerns left me, on one hand, feeling disillusioned with the industry I had been in for 30 years, and on the other hand, excited by the challenge of doing something about it. I felt it was vital was to create a company that was a ‘safe haven’ for people who choose a vegetarian or vegan diet, whether for health reasons, ethical reasons or due to their religious affiliation. Vegan products are relatively easy to find, but finding a broadspectrum vitamin company, which is 100% vegan is much more challenging. The year before we launched, I was so fortunate to be invited by the highly respected botanical pioneer and founder of Eclectic Institute, Ed Alstat, to spend a few days with him, his wife and the rest of the Eclectic team at their organic herb farm and production facilities in Oregon. This trip was life-changing in that I saw the dramatic advantages of fresh freeze-drying of botanicals and superfoods, for which Ed was the industry’s pioneer. It was experiences such as these, which lead me to work to create supplements that really helped the body and harnessed superfoods and natural active ingredients in a way that moved past the pharmaceutical model and embraced the power of nature. Terranova’s Life Drink is available in Health Food stores nationwide. terranovahealth.com

49 Heart Song Circles rECONNECTING TO ThE hEArT. By Kim Kindersley
Our fi rst circles together were over sixteen years ago now, in a simple house in the hills above Byron Bay. In those days everyone brought instruments, drums and it was chaotic fun. Right from the start, I felt Kevin had something special. He writes the most uplifting songs, weaving ancient mantras with simple English, in different styles but all capable of blasting open the heart. For me, I discovered that singing is a profound practice and ceremony. When I moved to Bali, I rented a special house near Ubud and the magic really grew. Kevin would come for months at a time and every weekend we would invite the community to come and
“He writes the most uplifting songs, weaving ancient mantras with simple English, in different styles but all capable of blasting open the heart.” sing with us. More and more people came to join with us and the energy just grew and grew. At last year’s Bali Spirit Festival
there were over 700 people singing Kevin’s heart songs as one. I love the circles because there is really no separation between performer and audience. Kevin holds the space for the magic to happen and invites the participants to journey with him. Through the act of singing as one, we join together in the heart and the magic happens. For me no matter how I feel going into a circle, the process always connects me to my heart and when I am in my heart I feel connected to everyone else. It is simply beautiful. Kevin and Kim will be in Ireland from 26th May to 25th June kevinjamesheartsongs.com

Young, Gifted & Vegan ExPLOrING ThE EATErIES Of BrAy. By The Veghuns
We spent a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Bray sampling the vegan delights on offer at Platform Pizza Bar and its sister restaurant, Box Burger (platformpizzabar.ie, boxburger.ie). For hungry seaside ramblers, this was the perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the view. Both restaurants have a unique atmosphere - Platform with its rustic yet somehow modern style, Box Burger with its laid back party vibe. We were drawn here for their accommodating and diverse menus which boast vegan, glutenfree and paleo options. Platform’s vegan pizza, for lack of a better phrase, was abso delish! With a melody of vegetable toppings, Violife dairy-free cheese and perfect crust, we hope their originality will inspire other pizzerias around the country. Box Burger can also pride themselves on their imaginative veggie option. Their vegan cheese burger is sure to satisfy any meat eater looking to try an alternative. With a seitan patty (a high-protein, wheat-based meat substitute) and thoughtful toppings, this generous sandwich makes a refreshing change from the classic veggie burger. The decision to include a vegan option in these two eateries has proved highly popular with customers. It also
51 harmonises nicely with their healthy eating ethos, and reflects the restaurants’ desire to cater for everybody. With wonderful food, inviting ambiance and friendly staff, these seaside restaurants guarantee you won’t be left stranded. facebook.com/veghuns
Deep Physical Relaxation leT GraviTY liFT YOu up. By Dr Anthony Sharkey
A few months ago, a trusted friend shared that he had discovered a device which induced so much relaxation that his breathing spontaneously stopped for ten or more seconds. I was intrigued so I put my caution aside and purchased it. Invented by an Irishman, Dr. Shane Murnaghan, the device is called Gravity. It consists of two pieces of hard plastic both covered in small hemispheres. One piece is shaped to snugly cradle the neck and the other is a triangle shape, which fits under the sacrum. The instructions are to lie on it for 20 - 40 minutes and notice what happens. Within a few weeks of using it I experienced a consistent deeper physical relaxation than I have ever experienced in my 36 years of meditation and Yoga practice. So much so that I found myself effortlessly shifting into profound states
of meditative freedom. I think it also facilitated the disappearance of a subtle but definite background freefloating anxiety, which I have suffered from for years. I highly recommend it to all you Yogis, Meditators, Alexander and Pilates practitioners or simply if you experience neck or back pain. I think it’s a very valuable addition to your body work tool box if you are committed to releasing physical tension in your body especially when other methods aren’t quite working as completely as you intuitively know might
be possible. Shane is doing a low-cost clinic in Restore Health in Camden Street and a Buddha Bag talk on June 30th. facebook.com/dranthonysharkey gravitylife.co.uk

Cultivating Wisdom A GArdENING PrOJECT fOr SChOOLS. By Vilma Matuleviciute MSc (President of IRH)
The Herb Patch started with the idea of bringing green spaces into urban schools that had none. It soon became clear that the garden was a valuable resource that children everywhere should benefit from and it was expanded to include rural schools. The aim of this project is to give children an opportunity to develop a relationship with plants and an interest in the natural world. A familiarity with how to use herbs to maintain health is a valuable asset for us all and will benefit these children as they grow into adulthood. Herbs and green spaces are great for children in many other ways – they encourage them to spend more time outside in the fresh air engaging in physical activity and they nurture in the

young a sense of stewardship for our planet. They also help children to connect with healthy eating and they love learning about how to use herbs in cooking. Gardening is a great skill for children to cultivate as they discover more about plants and how easy it is to grow them. Even if there are only windows sills or window ledges available, it is still possible to grow a few plants and
experience the excitement of watching them develop and learning how to nurture them. Children love growing plants, especially ones they can taste and eat!

Conscious ageing serves people who recognize that recognise the ability to create a meaningful and fulfi lling life is the result of conscious intentions and decisions. By pausing to take stock of our lives in a meaningful way, we gain clarity. We’re able to identify those aspects of our experience that have given value and depth to our lives that we want to carry forward on our journey. And we see which experiences and habits need to be examined and healed so that we can have clean, clear energy as we move into the future and not have our focus stuck in the past. Whether we’re transitioning into retirement, caring for elderly loved ones, coping with other aspects of evolving family dynamics, or simply searching for a way to engage more deeply with our own purpose and destiny, the dynamics of changing circumstances demand our full attention. In the conscious ageing workshops, we learn how to identify and use specific conscious states as tools for positive change. We shift our outlook on ageing from selflimiting beliefs of a downward slide into a twilight time of diminishment, loss and increasing dependency, to viewing the future as a new frontier, a time when we can devote more of ourselves to the things that matter most to us. Thus, the paradigm of ageing shifts to one of vast potential infused with vitality, passion, purpose and continual growth, all to help make the future years the best years. wholeheartedvision.com

Preventative measures for Alzheimer’s disease. By Gavin Ryan
Alzheimer’s diesease is the most common form of dementia. We may have come to see it as a normal part of ageing, but it’s not. While ageing is the number one risk indicator, it seems to be caused by a complex interaction of factors including health and wellness, genetics and medical history. Research has speeded up greatly in recent years due to the advent of technologies such as PET scans which help scientists see what is happening in the brain. This has brought new hope into the field of Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention. BBC’s Horizon programme reported on some of this groundbreaking research. One of the discoveries was that Alzheimer’s reduces brain synapses and also stops new ones being formed. Professor Robert Wurtman, from MIT, has found that extra doses of the brain building nutrients Uridine, Choline and DHA can change all that. An Irish company, Revive Active, has launched a supplement containing high doses of these three ingredients (Uridine, Choline and DHA) proven to promote the formation of synapses for memory development, focus and mental performance. The supplement is called ‘Mastermind’ and testimonials for the product have been rolling in from customers and health care professionals. Suitable for vegetarians (the DHA is sourced from marine algae rather than fish), Mastermind is aimed at people of all ages, from students to parents and seniors. The supplement is designed to improve cognitive function and who wouldn’t want to be able to think a little sharper? reviveactive.com
There are some great things out there that supercharge your blood quality (like beetroot juice – the clue is in the colour). I’m always looking for something that will give me a boost and taste good. I recently tried Nuzest vegan protein powder and the taste is simply knockout. In fact, it was so good I thought there must be something dodgy in it. I got a pleasant surprise then when I read the label and found the ingredients to comprise Pea Protein Isolate, Vanilla Flavour and Katemfe Fruit Extract. The sweetener from the fruit is 100 % natural and has no calories. Put two spoonfuls in a glass of water or your smoothie and you have all nine essential amino acids. On top of that, it’s alkaline and tastes creamy and delicious. Sometimes, with our busy lifestyles, it’s hard to get nutrients into us. I’m a fan of going as natural as you can. Sometimes powder can seem unnatural, but with advances in technology and the way supplements are prepared, I really feel they can enhance your health and diet. Nuzest is also used by the All Blacks and those guys don’t mess around. Have you seen them do the Haka? Tomorrow morning try this stuff, do your own Haka and bounce into work, play or gym. nuzest.com

56 Star Crossed Lovers vEdIC ASTrOLOGy ANd rELATIONShIPS. By Calodagh McCumiskey The concept of relationships is probably one of the most talked about topics regardless of whether you have a partner or not. Fulfi llment comes when the growth of both individuals and the partnership is supported. No one gets everything – with every gift comes a thorn. Each of us brings strengths and weaknesses to the table. Astrology helps us understand how these characteristics intertwine and affect each other, impacting on the compatibility of a couple in areas from general happiness and wealth to health and food. This is where the objective understanding of astrology can help to enhance, strengthen and advise.
But how does Vedic astrology actually help guide us towards fulfillment and the expansion of love? Imagine a mirror through which we can truly see ourselves – our strengths, our weaknesses, our current environment, our past and probable future – astrology is like that mirror empowering us with insight. As a couple, this understanding of how you compliment or hinder each other allows you to not only lessen confl ict, but to enhance your relationship and support each other as individuals. What if you’re considering marriage? A consultation could help you begin this next stage of your life together, with not only a greater understanding of each other’s needs, but also by providing you with an auspicious date for the deepening of this journey together. In life as in nature there are times for planting and times for waiting. Choosing an auspicious date simply helps you to plant that seed of commitment in fertile ground, giving you the best chance for a happy ever after. hellenisticvedicastrology.com

By Elva Carri A wise person once told me that when it comes to your career, you should always be either earning or learning. I decided to take a little look at both options in the context of the working environments myself or friends have been in, and the joyful curse of finding both of these things in a job! the Joys of eArning More than one survey has confi rmed that when it comes to millennials choosing a career, they want meaningful work. According to Deloitte, most choose to work for organisations that share their personal values. However, it’s not the case for every millennial or every person, and there’s a lot to be said for a job that pays your bills, allows you to comfortably fund the lifestyle you enjoy, and enables you to build the future you dream of. In the age of ever-increasing awareness of the disparities of our world, I think we shouldn’t be too quick to judge well-paid jobs, either for ourselves or for others, that on the surface, may appear, ‘less meaningful’. If you’re daydreaming about
a job you’re really passionate about or stimulated by, keep reading. the Joys of leArning Perhaps you’re in a job in an industry that you love, it’s something you’re passionate about and you’re honing the skills of the trade. In many cases, these jobs are much sought after, so employers with an array of hire choices end up paying less for great talent. I think the most difficult part of it is when bills are due and money is tight, it’s easy to feel scared and financially insecure, and this can quite easily lead to feeling righteous. This isn’t conducive to anything good. Make sure your mind is focussed on the benefit of this phase but also whether this is where you should stay. Skills are always transferable to other industries. the Curse of Both While I’ve never experienced earning heaps of money, at the moment, I would say I’m comfortable. I’m not making enough to save for the future, but mostly I can afford the kind of lifestyle I want or
close to it. I also am incredibly lucky to be learning so much, so fast, working in a start up. Being part of a very small team attempting to grow a global business, you can’t foresee the next challenge. They are constant surprises and constant learning. It’s addictive and I love it. I’ve referred to this as the ‘curse’ of both because there’s one drawback. I don’t want to ever not be working. It’s hard to switch off because I enjoy it. It’s also hard to switch off because maybe we can reach the financial rewards sooner if I just stay up a few hours later, or neglect to book that holiday! I think something similar happens in a job you love where you’re constantly working towards promotions and raises. Like most things in life, the most important part is to stop for five seconds and consider what you want from life. Where do you want to be in five years? Take a few hours to reflect, to daydream and to write it down. Elva Carri is the CEO of global, female, friendship community GirlCrew. girlcrew.rocks | @elvacarri

A company with a conscience, Iswari was set up by three friends; Jason Linton, Goncalo Sardinha and Frantisek Lomsky; who shared a spiritual vision and who, in an act of divine intervention, met each other in the most coincidental of circumstances. Whilst working at an ecovillage in South India, Jason had the pleasure to work alongside a rather interesting man named Goncalo Sardinha, who was on a 3-year voyage of self-discovery with his 3-year-old son. Jason and Goncalo instantly got into discussions about permaculture, yoga and the spiritual world, with the former becoming instantly struck by Goncalo’s passion, knowledge, and commitment to living a spiritual and sustainable lifestyle. While on the same trip, Goncalo, in turn, met Frantisek Lomsky from Prague at a Buddhist retreat in London. From there, the three friends decided it was time to bring their spiritual values into their everyday lives and create a livelihood from their will to do good things in the world. An ideal that seemed easier said than done, until the three realised that they already knew the answer. Goncalo had discovered the world of raw foods and superfoods at a life-changing detox retreat in California. They helped him to transform his health and vitality and, from that moment, he knew that he wanted to bring these beneficial products to his friends, family, and the world beyond. And so while together in Ireland in 2009, the three friends decided to work together to create a European superfood brand like no other, with not only a commitment to sustainable values but also with unique and interesting products. Iswari was born. Goncalo began to import superfoods to Portugal where he set up his manufacturing facility, while Franta and Jason were busy marketing the products
in Ireland and the Czech Republic. All three were met with great enthusiasm. “We never lacked interest, or customers. It seemed like people were thirsty for the healthy revolution!” reflects Jason. “We were pretty much the first superfood company establishing itself in Ireland at that time – it really felt like the Iswari goddess was on our side!” By accident Jason stumbled on a chocolate factory near his home in Co. Wicklow, who now produce more than 30,000 bars each year for Iswari. Ethical and environmental business practices are at the core of Iswari’s values, as Jason says: “Being a mainly vegan company is important to us. Superfoods can help more and more people to thrive on a vegetarian and vegan diet, which in turn helps to contribute to a more sustainable world. Whilst our products do come from all around the world, we never airfreight our products, and we feel the positive impact of helping people to reduce their meat consumption outweighs the negative impact of transporting our products.” Jason believes that since you only need a small amount of superfoods to fulfil the body’s needs, and so combined with local organic fruit and vegetables, you can live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. “The problem with eating only local foods, is that our soil is depleted of many essential nutrients, and so somewhere along the line, we need to supplement.” Now, six years later, thanks to their ‘think global, act local attitude’, Iswari products are sold in 17 countries, including Malaysia, Mozambique, Holland and Germany. “We have continued to move from strength to strength,” says Jason, “we feel immense gratitude that we are able to establish a company that helps to bring healthy and organic foods to homes in Ireland and beyond.” iswari.net

summer holidays STAyLISTENING ANd rELAxEd PArENTING. By Anna Cole
62 Hooray! The long summer holidays are approaching. I want to share some ideas about how best to serve your children, and yourself, during the summer holidays that may at fi rst feel counter-intuitive. Let me start by sharing a story, fi rst told by Patty Wipfler, founder and director of Hand in Hand Parenting. It’s the story of two loving, hard-working parents who took their two young sons on the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii. The parents knew that jet-lag and disruption to routines could cause sleep and behavioural challenges so planned in extra time to play and relax once landed, and made sure to give each child individual warm attention as they acclimatised. After a day or two in idyllic surroundings, with lots of fun in the water, special foods as a treat, and more relaxed screen-time rules than at home did these parents find themselves with two overjoyed young boys? Well, yes and no! By day three their oldest son melted down into an almighty cry on a seemingly tiny pretext. The same thing happened the next day, and the next, a big hearty, ‘unreasonable’ meltdown on their dream holiday. Their youngest also found small reasons for big cries. The parents recalled one unedifying scene, where the youngest sat down in the airport and refused to walk because the airline attendant had handed his brother a boarding pass after scanning it but not him. Sound familiar dear parents? So what is going on here? As Patty Wipfler puts it, “For children, the best thing about vacations is that their parents aren’t so busy. The prolonged contact (which often starts
“May your summer holidays offer such chances for healing and better connection.” in the car or plane) gives children’s emotional mind a sense of increased safety. This in turn translates into children trying to set up chances to heal from the harder times they’ve had.” When our families come together and spend extended time together, a child’s limbic system, the seat of emotions, gets the signal that life is better than usual. Feelings that don’t correspond to the closeness, the ease, or sense of relaxation pop up, ready to be released. It won’t be easy, but if you, the parent, can get your feelings listened to by another adult, about how unfair this feels on holiday, and manage to stay present, loving and listen to your child through these big ‘emotional poops’, you will be surprised at the positive changes you will see in your child afterwards. We at Hand in Hand Parenting call this Staylistening. The hardworking parents from our story in Hawaii, already familiar with Staylistening, decided to settle in, relax as much as they could and listen through some big cries, rather than distracting, pleading, scolding or threatening their children. What they discovered was, after a good cry, their kids seemed to press
a ‘reset’ button on previously rigid and un-coperative behaviours. On returning from their trip, a neighbour, not known for her warmth or kindness, remarked that their eldest son was flexible, easygoing and cooperative in a way she’d never seen before. These parents hadn’t planned an emotional spa for their children, but by listening and not shutting down the release of tears when they popped up on holiday, that’s just what they’d done. May your summer holiday offer such chances for healing and better connection. May your own feelings be listened to and respected by another loving adult in between ‘Staylistening’. Bring on the spa!
