6 1 Good Quantum Vibrations Good vibes just got physical. By Elva Carri Exciting new evidence has shown that those ‘good vibrations’ she’s giving you may be something that is actually resonating deep within your brain neurons. If the research that Anirban Bandyopadhyay has put forth is correct, it’s going to affect not only our understanding of consciousness, our mind’s relationship with the external world and how our thoughts affect change, but also how mental, neurological and cognitive conditions may be treated. The theory of consciousness this new research relates to was put forth in the 90s by Nobel prize candidate Roger Penrose and brain researcher Stuart Hameroff. They

suggested that quantum processes occur in the human brain and that we are thus connected to the universe at a quantum level. At the time, they had little evidence to back this up. For many, this may be a ‘feeling’ we had anyway. In John Searle’s book, ‘Consciousness’ (2005), he notes that although consciousness is hard to define, there’s a broadly shared intuition about it amongst philosophers. Bandyopadhyay’s discoveries, show that this ‘feeling’ may be a lot more physical than we knew. The research carried out by Bandyopadhyay and his team led to

discoveries of quantum vibrations inside microtubules, within brain neurons. Quantum vibrations have also been found in the parts of birds’ brains responsible for navigation and in plants in relation to photosynthesis. Penrose, Bandyopadhyay and Hameroff, who spoke about their revolutionary ideas in Amsterdam in late January also think that electrical brain waves detected by EEG machines could be a result of these deeper level microtubule vibrations. Although receiving criticism, the authors maintain that their theory suggests that “…conscious experience is intrinsically connected to the fine-scale structure of space-time geometry, and that consciousness could be deeply related to the operation of the laws of the universe.” sciencedirect.com

2 Breathtaking Underwater Relaxation Get free in the Red Sea. Freediving, or breath-hold diving, is all about relaxation and mastery of our breath. Learning to still the body and mind before slipping below the surface and exploring the beauty of the underwater world. Humans have been freediving for food since our evolution. Our ‘mammalian dive reflex’ enables our heart to slow and our body to conserve oxygen, enabling us to dive deeper and longer but now we can freedive for pleasure rather than necessity.

3 Eat With Everyone The couchsurfing of eating out. By Elva Carri You’ve probably heard of couchsurfing. You might have even heard about Berlin’s Bike Surfing. It’s clear we don’t just like to share on Facebook, we like to share in real life and this ethos is growing fast here. Freeconomy, a sharing initiative founded by Irish activist Mark Boyle has just merged with Streetbank, making sharing with neighbours nicer and easier than ever. And EatWith has arrived, offering a new, sharing experience for foodies. EatWith allows you to host or dine in homes and enjoy scrumptious cuisine and new experiences. Eating out is great but there’s something intrinsically special and intimate about food cooked and devoured in someone’s home. Firstly, it opens up the possibilities of what you eat from ‘trend’ food and established favourites, to age old family secrets or the delights created by those who cook from the heart, on instinct. Secondly, the pace of conversation at a dinner table is blissfully different to that of a restaurant. Helena Vigodsky, one of the first EatWith hosts in Ireland says, “Food is one of the basic needs and pleasures in life, sharing it is sharing life and creating community.” How did it come about? One evening in Crete, one of the founders of EatWith, dined at the home of the Papadakis family, a connection that was made through a friend of a friend. They didn’t just enjoy the food but spent four hours chatting. They describe how it ‘broke the bubble of disconnection’ you can feel when travelling. They sat, ate and connected. Now you can too, whether travelling or at home.

Emma Farrell, author of ‘One Breath, a Reflection on Freediving,’ has created a unique getaway experience that combines freediving and yoga on board a luxury yacht. A yoga teacher and freediving guru, Emma and her team of instructors introduce you to yoga and the many freediving disciplines, as well as giving you the chance to experience the profound relaxation practice known as yoga nidra (yogic sleep) under the stars each night. “On the last trip we dived pristine coral reefs surrounded by fish, incredible wrecks, and saw turtles and lionfish swimming lazily by us. On the last night, moored in the middle of the ocean, we were visited by two playful dolphins, which swam, played and blew bubble rings at us until we were too tired to continue. It was a truly magical and unforgettable experience.” Anyone can learn to freedive, and families are welcome.

4 A Quirky Surprise Man addicted to doing good. By Elva Carri

Filmingo Films created a very humorous video in March of last year that presented a man struggling with an unusual addiction. The one and a half minute video documents him talking about how his strange addiction takes a lot of time and effort and has become almost a part time job. It all seems a little sketchy until we see him popping sweets and chocolate into strangers’ pockets and bags; a reverse pick pocket! Check out part two to see just how much his addiction grew in only a few months.

8 5 a Great Moral Code the knock on effects of sharIng knowledge. By laura Ivers One day Patrick McConlouge, a programmer and entrepreneur working in New York wrote a blog post outlining an idea he had for a homeless man he passed on his walk to work. The idea was to offer the man $100, no strings attached, or a cheap laptop, 3 textbooks on JavaScript and an hour a day of coding lessons. Critics called Patrick clueless, morally suspect and degrading. Undeterred, he approached Leo Grand the next day. “He just had something about him... this guy was not done.” As a child, Leo had been obsessed with science but fell in with the wrong crowd, became a father young and then, had lost his job and home. According to Leo, the thought that crossed his mind on hearing Patrick’s offer was, “Door number two.” The lessons turned into an obsession. With no previous programming experience, Leo learned JavaScript in three months. “It turns out Leo is a genius particularly concerned with environmental issues. As I sat there becoming increasingly stunned, he rattled off import/ export prices on food, the importance of solar and green energy, and his approval for efficient public transportation initiatives. Leo used his newly acquired skills to create a car sharing app for commuters to help reduce carbon emissions. “This is what life is supposed to be like, you know? I want to be around plants and trees and I want to breathe as much Oxygen as possible.” In response to an incident where he was arrested for sleeping on a park bench and had his laptop confiscated he said, “No hard feelings. I know it sounds strange. I got a lot of respect for authorities.” When asked how he kept such a positive attitude Leo responded, “Faith. Prayer. It works, try it.”

With no previous programming experience, Leo learned JavaScript in three months.

spirituality & the city Unexpected pleasures and silver linings

Aidan Killian

Mags Fitzgerald Homeopath & CST

In 2010 I was admitted to hospital with problems that neither surgery nor antibiotics were able to heal. As a homeopath, I actually even assisted in diagnosing myself, while there, with mercury poisoning. I was devastated. But on my path to recovery, I was advised to go for a session of Craniosacral Therapy (CST). My first session was mind-blowing and it led me on to the most amazing journey. It is the most sacred healing modality I have ever encountered. It helped me to release emotions and patterns I had held in my body. I left my career in Equity Finance and now, work full-time as an alternative health practitioner and I’ve become a qualified CST Therapist myself. That difficult time was the catalyst to becoming the person I am today and I am the happiest, healthiest and most grounded I have ever been. I am eternally grateful. the-elbowroom.com

By 2008 I had left my ‘respectable’ job, had lost everything and could not pay the mortgage. I told the bank that they could keep the house but they did not appreciate my generosity! Instead, they terrified me with solicitor’s letters full of very big words. What a pickle I was in! I got a dictionary and responded using some big words of my own. I remember hesitating at post boxes, doing an awkward shuffle like it was my first moment at the Funky Seomra, but soon I got into the groove. I was amazed when the banks couldn’t answer my questions. I raised my game and started adding humour to my letters. I once sent my comedy video as “full and final payment of all alleged debts.” Thanks to my financial impoverishment, I have learned about the law, the matrix of nonsense (aka our financial system) and more importantly, my beautiful, powerful, beloved Self. comedycrashcourse.com

Davide Cavalli Once I went to Biarritz with one of my best friends to try surfing for the first time. Never having tried it before, I was a bit worried. Once we arrived, the weather was terrible and the sea seemed very threatening. But the next day I decided to throw myself into it anyway. After much struggle, I finally reached the area of the sea that surfers call the ‘line up’. This is a truly magical place because after facing challenges to overcome the breaking waves, you get to a place where the waves begin to take shape before crashing down. Here, seated on your board, you are swayed by the sea. I was filled with a feeling of peace and calm that I had rarely felt before. Definitely an unexpected pleasure.

Lynn Hodgins Eleven years ago, I was not into spirituality at any level but a friend was going through a difficult time and asked me if I would attend a yoga course with her. Yoga was something I had no interest in. Reluctantly, I agreed to go. I had visions of sitting cross-legged on the floor chanting “Om”. I could not have been more wrong. Yoga has completely transformed my life! It helped me find power within to heal myself physically, mentally and emotionally. I knew it was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. After two years of consistent practise, I enrolled on an intensive yoga teacher training apprenticeship. I truly believe it’s my life’s purpose to unite peoples’ mind, body and soul so that they too can become open to the vast experience that life has to offer. yogaforyou.ie

11 Colm McNamara In September 2007, I started in the highest-profile, highest-paid job of my career. Yet six months later, I knew it wasn’t the right fit. I had always harboured ideas of setting up on my own, perhaps now was the time to start thinking. In September 2008, I visited California to research an idea. As I flew home, the finance world capitulated and September 2009 saw me called into the boss’s office; the instability was going to affect me. I had spent 12 months refining my idea, now was my time to act. It seemed like the planets were aligning! In December 2009, I signed the lease for Pablo Picante Burrito Bar on Baggot St. When I opened the doors in February 2010, the burritos sold out! November of that year, it was number four in the Dubliner’s Top 100 restaurants list and since then, two other Pablo Picantes have opened. I’m still reeling. pablopicante.com

Coming from an extremely Catholic family, who suggested adoption as the solution to my ‘crisis’ pregnancy, my decision to welcome this human actually turned out to be the best adventure of my life. Although I felt stressed and immature in myself, my heart and soul trusted these would pass. Her appearance in a relatively new relationship, propelled me to take stock and become clear about my needs. The first year was challenging in many ways but her wondrous and eternally optimistic child-life convinced us that another kiddo was a brilliant idea! Our son was born exactly 3 years and 364 days after his big sister. Eleven years after this ‘crisis’, our healthy, secure, kind and creative son and daughter make the initial stress a tiny and distant memory. I have learned to forgive and thank myself for saying YES to possibility, to the unknown and to myself.

positi v e a strology

transparent communication profound shifts in perception. By Andrew Smith

The spiritual sciences talk of several planes of existence – the lower planes express more of the matter dimension and are therefore more ‘material’, and the higher planes express more of the energy aspect and are therefore more ‘subtle’. These planes are not specific locations but they all interpenetrate each other and occupy the same ‘space’, merely reflecting differing levels of consciousness. Each plane is separated by a thin veil, mythologically depicted within our Celtic Lore as a mist, which once entered gave you access to another realm, or state of Being. There are those who are born with an uncanny ability to walk between worlds and there are those who actively seek, through deep spiritual development, meditation

12 and lucid dreaming, to penetrate through the Veil, but there are also times when the Veil is very thin. The spring of 2014 is one of those times as the intensified movement occurring within the vast cosmic ocean creates heightened cycles of ebbing and flowing spiritual forces which in turn are reflected within our experiences of the ongoing shifts within our Being-Consciousness. As the Veil thins in mid-April, accessibility to more subtle levels of consciousness takes place and this means that you are poised for further profound shifts in perception in how you view your life in general, and humanity as a whole, as you are being prompted to wake up spiritually by raising your

level of consciousness, to connect with your true-self and widen your breadth of consciousness so that you experience life more fully. In sync with this thinning you have been undergoing a complete transmutation through a clearing and quickening of your physical, mental, emotional, and etheric bodies. Your consciousness has subsequently evolved more deliberately, raising your body’s vibration and kindling a quickening process that can transmute the shadows of the past, including experiences, judgements, thought forms, and old patterns that have held you back. In the same way that 2013 was all about elemental water – our emotional maturation – 2014 is all about the element

of Air. If you simply correlate the word ‘Air’ with the physical air that we breathe it is essential to life in the form of oxygen. Air extinguishes fire; churns water to mist and can rip up the Earth. But it can also bring fire to life by providing the necessary fuel to feed the flame; it can push a boat across water and shape the land through erosion. Its very existence is fundamental to our wellness as Air essentially concerns communion through the medium of sound or conversation. Continuing from the themes invoked between the 6th and 26th of February, your energetic ability to busy yourself is slowed from the 1st March through to the 20th May as you are being prompted to explore the quality of togetherness, and the dialogue that exists, within your close personal relationships. Since this time concerns how you harmonise and therefore experience union with another soul, a dynamic and vigorous opportunity is being afforded to you to enable you to raise your awareness about your behaviour within and experience of relationships. Questions I would like you to reflect on during this time concern the quality of the spiritual dimension of your close unions. How deep does the Spirit penetrate your relationships? Are you able to merge with those closest to you, without losing sight of who you are and without becoming enmeshed? Are you able to find the right words to actively communicate your

innermost values and ideals and do you feel able to articulate your dreams and soul longings? Have you taken time to respect your Divine Femininity or are you letting the prevailing patriarchal values pigeon hole you into a gender based role? Can you humanly connect in the spirit of another, completely ‘seeing’ them and allowing your light to radiate unconditionally, so that you too are ‘seen’? Moreover do you honour spirit with your words or do you allow your frustrations to dictate the tone and expression of how you communicate? Does the passion from your voice strip layers from another, or does it fire their soul with genuine encouragement, support and love? Are you able to communicate this passion to those closest to you, freely and confidently? This questioning is intensified during mid-April as you continue to experience an awakening, acceleration and liberation of the elemental forces within you, whilst at the same time witnessing a seismic regeneration, a freeing of libidinal energies, the activation of your cellular DNA and an increased awareness of death and re-birth reflected in a configuration known as a Cardinal T-Square that has formed between Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. This planetary weave has not been experienced since December 1426 and even then it did not reach the same degree of intensity as the formation taking place throughout the first six months of 2014.

We cannot speak of the consciousness of the past since we can only reflect in hindsight. However books, like art and music, are a barometer of where a society is at given any period in history. Their style, subject matter and tone tell us much about the consciousness of the author, and by extension, how he or she views their surrounding reality. So if we correlate differing steps of this cosmic dance across our experience of time, we can see that this interplay has been part of the background hum when some of the most important shifts in culture took place, resulting in some seminal publications that have shaped human consciousness: Plato’s The Republic; the Bible and the Qur’an; Dante’s Divine Comedy; Machiavelli’s The Prince; Shakespeare’s first publication; Marx’s Communist Manifesto; Coelho’s The Alchemist; Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of Rights of Woman; and George Orwell’s 1984 to cite but a few. Their impact on human society is to challenge and transform the underlying framework extant at the time. Yes, each creation was seen at the time as being subversive by the powers that be, but ultimately, over time, each in their own way ushered in a differing way of viewing the world. That is what you are being afforded – a new way of being. Fundamentally this ‘T-Square’ champions a more self-aware model of autonomy that recognises our frailties

“…which in turn will help us to create a new social reality.” For those now furiously checking Wikipedia for what took place during the third decade of the fifteenth century, aside from the natural warring state of our hominid species, please remember that astrology concerns the understanding of the emerging consciousness on Earth, as opposed to focusing on what will happen when any other planetary pairing aligns. Consequently it is virtually impossible to ascertain what was being experienced by those living through that self similar patterning, as there remains little anecdotal stories recorded by those born as pre-cursors of the Renaissance period, let alone the dearth of historical records that time.

and limitations without repudiating the rights of others. If we recognise that every soul is on its own journey towards a more integrated, honest and purposeful way of being and that we are essentially ‘unfinished’ in our soul development, then we can cultivate relationships that are more compassionate, understanding and supportive, which in turn will help us create a new social reality. Andrew’s private practice is in Blackrock, South Dublin. When that happens, confidence is truly in place. So, ask yourself: do I have a lot of great, inspired ideas that I never do anything with? Accessing abundance, joy and ‘isness’. By Sandy C. Newbigging

Success appears to mean different things for different people. For some, it might be optimum health, while others associate it with financial wealth or reaching the top of their organisation or profession. Irrespective of your personal benchmark for what a successful life looks like, it is only in discovering the inner presence of stillness that you can feel a true and lasting sense of satisfaction. Like the surface of the ocean, your thoughts, emotions, body, career, relationships, finances and all other aspects of your external world are constantly changing. That’s what they do. Thoughts and emotions happen, while the body does its thing. New people enter your life as others leave. Careers change, political parties rise and fall and economic climates change as quickly as the weather. Owing to these aspects of your body, mind and life being in a constant state of flux; it is no wonder if you don’t find longlasting serenity or success by attempting to

19

find it in the transient movement of life. There is nothing fanciful about this. In a very real way, you feel what you focus on. Putting all of your attention on things that are moving and changing means you will most likely experience a sense of instability and unease. Relying on transient things as your source or measure of success can be a risky strategy. You may well get possessions and prestige, but it will rarely relieve the inner itch that there must be more to life than the stuff that’s filling your mind and life now. You’d be right, too; there is more – infinitely more! If you want to enjoy a more sustainable sense of success, you can experience it by learning to put your attention on your inner consciousness, which is permanently still and always abundant. Shifting where you put your attention – from the mind to consciousness – immediately reconnects you with calm, contentment, love and happiness, and, as a

Still, silent, spacious awareness is always perfect, whole and complete exactly as it is.” judgement, there is no reason not to love. You don’t ignore what’s happening in your life. You ignore the judgements your mind has about your life. Successful living within this model looks and feels very different to the traditional ideas about success taught in school and by society. I’d say a successful life is one that is loved by the person living it. Would you agree? If you met a millionaire who was still unsatisfied with their life and a less wealthy person who loved their life, who would you say is more successful? If you shift your priorities to loving who you are now and what you already have, you can very quickly move into a truly successful life – one that you love. result, true success. Something magical happens when you are courageous enough to withdraw your attention from judgmental thinking by placing it on the inner awareness of stillness. Life stops being good or bad, right or wrong, better or worse and you see that everything just is. On the surface things may appear to be bad, wrong or worse at times, but there is simultaneously what can be described as a mysterious ‘isness’ to life. Still, silent, spacious awareness is always perfect, whole and complete exactly as it is. It is beyond judgement because it is beyond the mind. Amazingly, when you suspend judgement, you naturally experience love. Why? With no negative

20 wheel of your beautiful life beauty, balance and personal empowerment. By Mary Berkery

Earlier this year, I took time to work with a coaching colleague using a tool that I use with my own clients. It is called the ‘Wheel of Life Consultation’. I looked at my work/ life balance. It showed me what needed more attention in certain areas for balance to manifest more consciously in life. You can use it to manifest beauty in all areas of your life. Life’s activities are always shifting so perfect balance needs to be achieved and maintained. There are times when one area of your life may be requiring much energy and you can feel your life is out of balance. When this is the case, it can help to take a step back and look at the big picture. If we lay it all out, as described below, we can examine our satisfaction with the various elements in play. Draw a circle on a pad and divide it into eight parts. Then, on the outside, write the present areas of your life. Examples would be: » Physical Care: Feeling good about the

»

condition of your body, with exercise, nutrition, sleep. Relationship/Friendships: Looking at intimate relationships and friendships and/or wish for intimate relationships and quality friendships that have common interests and support. Home Environment: Creating your home as a sanctuary for your being with, color décor, and divine order. Fun and Recreation: Participating in individual and group activities that provide you with enjoyment and self-fulfi llment. Self-Esteem: Feeling good about who you

“Having time and energy to experience your life to the fullest.”

are. Recognising your needs and feelings and expressing them appropriately. Finances: Ability to match your income with your personal needs. Creativity and Hobbies: Having time and energy to experience your life to the fullest. Family: Contributing responsibly to your home and family life. Maintaining healthy and fun connections that support all. Personal Care and image: Attending to the your personal wardrobe. Body, skin and hair care that express your unique caredfor beauty. Work, Education and Personal Development: Implementing plans for your future education, training and occupational goals.

The above are examples of what you could input. Others examples could include voluntary work, spiritual development, and life purpose. It is your wheel of your life for this time. Next, marking the centre of the wheel as 0 and the outer edge as 10, rank your level of satisfaction with each area out of 10 by drawing a straight or curved line to create a new outer edge. The new perimeter of the circle represents your ‘Wheel of Life’. Is it a bumpy ride? Now, looking at the wheel with loving curiosity, remember this is not an exercise in self criticism, and ask yourself some questions. Are there any surprises for you? How do you feel about your life as you look at your Wheel? How do you currently spend time in these areas? How would you like to spend time in these areas? Choose three areas that you would most like to improve and three actions needed to do this? How could you make space for these changes? What would your life look like in a year from now if you did not follow through on these actions? What would 10 look like in these three areas of choice? When you’re feeling good about the three areas you want to develop further, spend some time thinking about the actions you’ve listed to work on these. See where they fit in to your schedule and begin to make time for them, while keeping all of the other areas in mind too, to achieve balance while still in motion. The invention of the wheel is after all, about moving forward, let it take you somewhere beautiful! to see examples of how to draw your wheel of life, visit positivelife.ie for the online version of this article. email mary@livingbeauty.ie or telephone 00353 86 028 2882

in worship of

childbirth Witnessing life’s greatest miracle at home.

By Philomena Canning

No one could convince me that there’s a more rewarding occupation than being a midwife. Witnessing the vitality of a baby’s first breath; the joyous sound of its cry filling the air; the quiet attentiveness to the familiar sounds of its mother and father whispering their hundred million

welcomes; the meeting of eyes lost in love; and the insatiable desire for the nurturing milk of its mother’s breast are among the unfolding gifts that proclaim the miracle embodied by the new-born baby. ‘Midwife’ literally means ‘being with woman’ and I’m particularly lucky as I get to be with

women who choose to give birth at home. Planning a homebirth comprises effective preparation for the best possible experience in birth. Childbirth is a natural physiological process where the mother surrenders herself to the power of her birth-giving forces. In doing so,

she and her baby are safe-guarded by the protective effects of mother-nature. Giving birth at home facilitates the capacity to surrender. In a familiar, private environment, the mother retains a feeling of control and belongingness, and can more freely ‘let go’. In surrender, there is vulnerability. The mother-to-be needs unconditional trust in those who are caring for her. In the mother-midwife relationship, trust is developed through many visits and conversations. By the time the birthing process begins, the mother is calling on someone she has come to know, who shares her values and beliefs, respects and gives credence to her capacity, and who she knows will guard and protect her and her baby. Respect for the power of nature is scientifically proven to be the key to the health and wellbeing of the mother and baby in physiological childbirth. The midwife has no role in intervention which disrupts a natural process that has served us well through the ages. In respect and awe of the power of creativity,

the midwife keenly observes, using her knowledge, wisdom and intuition in the art of facilitating the universal process of childbirth that is unique to each woman. The physical process, where bones negotiate bones, can of course offer up challenges that a mother’s body alone cannot remedy, but nature can be relied

upon to provide ample time to access the skills and expertise of western medicine and technology if and as we need them. In a safe haven with her loved ones and trusted carers in attendance, many of the practical measures needed by the mother are simplistic; the use of warm, deep birthing pools, low lighting, relaxing music, movement, massage, complimentary therapies, hot flannels, soft mats, flexible furniture, and soothing words of encouragement and reassurance enable her to birth her baby at her own pace into the bosom of her welcoming and loving arms. The reward for the physical struggle of human creativity is the greatest sense of emotional fulfilment, empowerment and spiritual wellbeing bestowed on the mother which, in turn, nurtures her baby, her family, the community and the world. I am blessed by the occupation of worshipping at the altar of childbirth. philomena canning is a self-employed midwife based in dublin. 087-2900017 | sarahphilomena@gmail.com

RUBY WAX IS CURRENTLY ON HER SANE NEW WORLD SPRING TOUR. We caught up with her to find out more about Oxford, neurons and mindfulness. By Elva Carri, interviewed by Paul Congdon.

You may think you’ll feel better if you get more money, buy those jeans, finish reading this article etc. But that doesn’t ever stop, does it? One of the most excellent things about life is that there is always more to do and learn. But when you see someone given a promotion and they don’t take a moment to pat themselves on the back because they’re already worrying about their increased responsibilities, or your friend meets an amazing potential partner and is freaking out because it might not work out, while simultaneously freaking out because it could, you begin to wonder what all the panic is about, and how to stop it. Ruby Wax refers to this as needing to “cool our cortisol”; a chemical produced in our brains as a response to fear. Ruby studied the brain at Oxford for two years. “I had to. I’m obsessed with the reality of things.” Cortisol helped us when we needed the internal ‘fight or flight’ kick for survival but we have the same physiological response to someone not accepting our friend request. “It’s really good, it got us going, it got us inventing but it can also knock you dead. I’ve seen therapists and I don’t want to have to endlessly run to them. I haven’t had a depression in seven years.” But she never expected that mindfulness would be the answer.

Speaking at The School of Life Sunday Sermon, Ruby explained that because of neural plasticity, we have the ability to re-wire our brains, “So I thought, how do you regulate this stuff? And it turns out mindfulness, which I would never would have done in a million years, because I keep thinking “Oh thats some guy with a bindi on his head, worshipping an elephant with 2,000 arms” but it turns out that has the best results.” “It’s not something I thought up on a weekend,” she tells us, “Thats the way it is. You can watch neurons wiring and unwiring and chemicals switching on and off because the person is doing it intentionally.” Aside from improved mental health, she’s also more focussed, “I can memorise a script pretty fast and most people think when you get older you can’t. Well here’s the proof. I’ve got two shows in my head, each one’s an hour. I don’t think it has to do with luck, I think it has to do with the fact that I’m working on it.” She also told us Ireland is her favourite place to perform and why, “The people have a great sense of humour, they’re ironic and dark. That’s my type, so I cant wait to be there.” Ruby’s book Sane New World is out now and her latest show, of the same name, will be in Ireland this April.

“We are not equipped for this century, it’s too hard, too fast, and too full of fear; we just don’t have the bandwidth. Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and forcefed information. I can just about take in the weather then I’m exhausted. You open a newspaper, everyone’s dead. We’re only supposed to know what our neighbour is up to; if the woman next door to you is having sex with the man next door to her we need to know; but four doors down and it’s none of our business.” The solution: slow down, meditate, breathe.

delights of life at

earthsong A week of camping, community and celebration.

By Aisling McCarthy

26 Every July we pack up our tent and supplies and head off on an adventure. Our destination? A field in Tipperary that for a couple of weeks each year becomes a magical village; a village overflowing with singing and dancing, with healing and laughter, with a spirit that grows minute by minute and day by day. It’s an experience that is hard to put into words but so special that each year my kids are counting down the days like waiting for Christmas! Above all, Earthsong is an experience of community. We cook and eat together, we make music together, we

learn new skills together, and we share the ups and downs of camping on a very well kitted-out site. Camping is in circles of 20–25 people with a mix of families, singles, young and old. It always amazes me how deeply the circles bond, often with deep friendships formed. Each circle looks after its own domestic set up with makeshift kitchens around an open fire, so I always take warm clothes for late night chats and sing songs, and lots of marshmallows for toasting! Everyone takes it in turns to cook dinner, usually in pairs, so you only cook once and then are served scrumptious meals every evening after. It’s incredible the gorgeous stews and fabulous deserts that are rustled up. If you’re new to camping, fear not, there is always an experienced earthsonger on hand to help. One nice thing is we aren’t disturbed by a mobile phone going off during dinner because mobiles are for use off site only and this is a tremendous relief. One of the most refreshing things about Earthsong is that we get a chance to take time out from normal everyday stress or worries to relax and just ‘be’. Alcohol and drugs are also a no-no on site, which increases our safety and sensitivity with those around us. It allows us to connect in more meaningful ways.

There are so many fun things to do. There is a shop, a café, a children’s play area and peaceful woodland walks. Whether you are feeling quiet, sociable or wildly playful there is always something cool going on. Moreover, there is an incredible choice of workshops to go to, from Sound Healing to Aikido, Georgian singing to African dance, as well as Cuban drumming, yurt making, tai chi, yoga and loads more, all facilitated by top notch leaders. Evening time at Earthsong is especially thrilling. It might include rainforest songs in the moonlit woods, fiery big top drumming, children’s cabaret with hot chocolate or a stroll through the camp to visit new friends. It might take in an impromptu sing song or a game of volleyball. Sometimes, I have found myself luxuriating in the Yurt Sauna or eating too much chocolate and telling stories with friends. Of course for grown ups to be happy it’s important that the children are happy too, so as a parent I really appreciate that there is a wonderfully diverse and wholesome children’s program which includes arts and crafts, sports, puppetry, drama and lots of other fun activities. The ‘tweens’ (11–12), do a fantastic array of workshops and there is also a separate area

for teens. Teenagers over 14 may camp together, supervised by the energetic teen team, whose duties include facilitating sharing circles and making hot chocolate for the evening life story sessions. For teenagers, Earthsong is a place that can transform their lives, a place where they can really be themselves and have an opportunity to share their experiences, to be heard, and to shine. The teens often offer so much inspiration to the camp as a whole, enriching us with their creativity, playfulness and boundless energy. It all adds up to a transformative experience. Earthsong has made a big difference in my own life and I also enjoy watching the joy it brings to those around me. I’ve brought a friend’s daughter for the past five years and I have loved watching her benefit and grow in so many ways. In my attempt to capture what makes Earthsong special I asked others close to me to share their stories too. My husband Martin told me, “Earthsong is a liberating place. You’re outside all of your usual stuff and out in nature for a week and it’s the community spirit that makes it possible not just to survive but to thrive. It’s completely down to earth, at times battling with the rain, the mud

For children, the freedom is amazing. Magical things happen here all the time, and I love sitting around a campfire singing the old Irish songs and making up new ones.” My friend Sinead is sixty five and has been at every Earthsong since it started in 2006. The event has really found a place in her heart too. “It’s a bit of an adventure and so exciting getting to know new people. There are no age

barriers, and it’s like learning to live in a new community. You may find yourself volunteering for something you never thought you’d do, so it challenges you but also supports you. When we’re all out in the field the first evening and we gather to the rhythm of the drumbeat, it’s soul stirring! For young people, they’re learning that there are different ways of being, and I feel that they are going to be stronger for it. You feel so nourished. It’s like travelling to a different world.” Earthsong is the beauty of a field at sunset, the colourful camps alive with talk and laughter, the smell of dinner on an open fire, and children chasing each other through the woods. It’s a guitar riff floating over from the teenager’s campfire, the unexpected kindnesses, and the joy of drinking tea under the stars with friends. Of course there are challenges and struggles, for this is a slice of real life, but I have experienced such harmony here. Earthsong is a community attempting to create something special and actually doing it. If you’re in two minds about coming to Earthsong then just throw caution to the wind; jump on board for the ride of your life. earthsong.ie

positive personality david sye real talk wIth the bad boy of yoga.

By Elva Carri

davId sye Is the founder of musIc-drIven yoga practIce, yogabeats™. often referred to as the ‘bad boy’ of yoga, hIs edgey, rule-breakIng approach lets people drop theIr InhIbItIons, open up and have a lot of fun.

things in their lives by doing it because it’s outside of form and doesn’t have rules. I’ve broken all the rules and I want to break them because the real rules can’t be broken. The implicit rules are an absolute truth, you can’t break truth. You can break rules, but not truth. On cheeseburgers If you need to eat cheeseburgers, eat them and and enjoy it. You don’t have to eat mung dahl. You can have a good time or a horrible time, it’s your choice. Every time I go to one of the yoga festivals they’re always offering me these little cups of green slime telling me it’d be really good for me to drink it but it actually tastes like s**t.

28 Our normal state is bliss You can’t have peace of mind, mind’s the f***ing problem. You can have peace but you can’t have peace of mind. All the ancient mystery schools say cut your head off, you’ll feel good. That’s why people take drugs–to get out of their mind. If you look at a baby, the baby’s in bliss, it needs to be changed or fed, but it’s in bliss and I figure we remember that forever.

That bliss is our normal state. Feeling good is our normal state. So I ask people, “Do you wanna get high? Or do you want to do yoga?” I mean who wants to do yoga? I wanna get high, so everybody gets high. On breaking the rules What I do in YogaBeats is I go out of the linear, into the crazy and get people out of their comfort zones. People find really unique

into the depth of that. What we feel in our hearts, we give to each other as a gift and this is how the world becomes healed. Get happy, live your dream and you won’t be able to stop giving good things out. James Brown, said, “What do you want to ask me?” So I said, “Well, what would you say to soldiers standing with kalashnikovs in a three sided war?” He went into this Biblical thing and then said, “Listen, you have to love each other but your love comes out of yourself, for yourself. If you love yourself, you can’t help but love another.” You know they say he’s black mafia but he was so kind. He was surrounded by all this power and fame and yet he was so soft, so compassionate, so loving and for me the indication of a great being is their level of kindness. We’re very cruel to ourselves and we’re hard to everyone else, as soon as something is kind we go, ‘Wow’.

And they say, “Yeah but it’s good for your body.” Yeah but my mouth is quality control.

Waking up If you want to be happy you can be happy in Glasgow. It’s you, it’s the state of yourself. In every lifetime, the soul comes in to wake up. When Buddha was dying, his cronies said, who are you? Are you God? No. Are you the prophet? No. Who are you? I’m awake.

On who’s inspired him Mother Teresa and James Brown. I interviewed them when I was working with a radio station in Belgrade. She said, “Love one another as God loves each one of you. When you love one another, you love each other as God loves each one of you.” And she went

secrets of the tantric lover how tantra can expand your whole lIfe. By Dawn Cartwright It is rare but not impossible to feel the erotic ebb and flow between dreams and desires. To experience, in the meeting of two bodies, the ache of joy now touched. There are those who say the experience of orgasm is a momentary death of the ego, everything that isn’t who we truly are dissolves for an instant. Pleasures surface from long forgotten depths and something new, that has always been, is born. We encounter the unmasked self and flourish in its blaze. The Tantric Lover dedicates his or her life to extending that instant into hours and days, until love is lived, unmasked, without end. SecretS of the tantric lover 1 Goals: The Tantric Lover is fearless, embracing the unfathomable love that arises through sex when orgasm is no longer a goal. The Tantric Lover engages

in lovemaking and self-pleasure without the goal of orgasm, giving themselves the opportunity to explore pleasure, intimacy and connection with and without orgasm so that new possibilities appear in the arousal trajectory. Both men and women are more sensitive to the orgasmic response cycle when the pelvic floor is well toned and relaxed. The Tantric Lover practices pelvic floor exercises to expand arousal capacity and awareness. 2 Attraction: The Tantric Lover knows beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Tantric Lover takes the initiative to work through old hurts and disagreements that have clouded their vision, they take responsibility for finding the way back to an open heart because they know a closed heart hurts them most of all. The Tantric Lover is not afraid of saying ‘no’ or setting limits when transgressions have occurred, but they don’t hold on to old baggage. The Tantric Lover maintains a sense of openness, they approach every encounter as if it’s the first time, every time.

“The Tantric Lover knows beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

3 Touch: The Tantric Lover listens with their body. For the Tantric Lover, lovemaking is a full body expression of love that has the potential to grow exponentially, clothes on and off. They’ve learned that pleasure is meant to expand through the body, that it doesn’t have to be limited to the genitals. The Tantric Lover is able to merge without losing themselves, listening with their whole being, they meet the beloved on every level while maintaining a loving awareness of themselves, their values and desires. 4 Generosity: The Tantric Lover is generous, planning activities they enjoy rather than filling their diary with meeting after meeting or task after task. The Tantric Lover knows the allure of todays busy world, yet chooses not to add one more stressful activity to an already full calendar. They schedule time for a healthy lunch, a walk in nature, or getting together with close friends. They set up a childcare co-op with other parents so they have child-free time each week. The Tantric Lover is consistently nourished and fulfilled in themselves, so much so, they are overflowing with generosity with those they love. 5 Confidence: The Tantric Lover knows themselves sexually. They’ve explored the vast landscape of pleasure and they’re well versed in what arouses them, brings them to the edge, takes them over it and beyond. The Tantric Lover is sexually alive. They’ve been through ups and downs in their own sexual exploration and have discovered that challenge or uncertainty in the bedroom can lead to connection and pleasure – when met with an open heart. resilience revisited

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” – Confucius By Davie Philip In this column, I’ve been exploring how, in the face of adversity, we might flourish as individuals and communities. Over the years I have introduced a number of emerging initiatives and cooperative approaches that might enhance connection between ourselves and our environment, while at the same time creating livelihoods and developing more sustainable communities. Underpinning the all of the different initiatives I have covered is the concept of resilience. This is a common word and many of us have a sense that being resilient is a good thing, but what does it actually mean? How might developing our resiliency increase our effectiveness and wellbeing, as well as benefitting the health of our communities? The word resilience comes from the Latin word ‘resalire’, which means springing back, or rebounding. This captures the essence of resilience from an individual’s perspective; an ability to recover quickly. But being resilient is more than just bouncing back to where we were before. If we are resilient we stretch ourselves, spring forward and, because of the challenges we face, emerge stronger. This transformational view of resilience emphasises renewal,

forward regeneration and re-organisation. It is not just about recovering or preparing for shock, it’s about human agency and the power to learn to navigate effectively through life. I recommend watching a short animation we made on YouTube called ‘Surfing the Waves of Change’. It explores how we can nurture our personal and community resilience to surf the most powerful waves of change with confidence and optimism. I like the metaphor of surfing. Healthy communities naturally build resilience as a part of their ongoing development. An objective of the Cloughjordan Ecovillage, where I live, is the building of better relationships with our neighbours and working together on projects of common interest. Building resilience can help communities develop the ability to face challenges in ways that strengthen their social bonds, better steward resources, enhance our capacity to cope with change and allow us to spring forward

“Resilience comes from the Latin word ‘resalire’, which means springing back”

strengthened and more resourceful. Resilience is a skill anyone can learn and improve at. At Cultivate Living and Learning we offer workshops and training on developing this important attribute. We have just begun a threeyear project with a number of European partners to develop a learning resource called ‘Schools for Resilience’. This programme, aimed at teenagers, will use a place-based learning methodology to build the competences of resilience and transform communities. Cultivate also host permaculture courses on how we live more sustainably, grow food intensively and strengthen the resilience of our communities. Keep a look out for ‘Summer of Resilience’, a dynamic series of events in August and September at the new WeCreate Workspace at Cloughjordan Ecovillage. These will explore the role of community organisations and social enterprise as catalysts for resilience and enhanced collaboration. When resilience is framed as transformation, challenges don’t define us, they refine us. The healthier, more buoyant and flexible we are as citizens, the more resilient our communities will be. So stretch, bounce back and spring forward. Davie Philip is a facilitator and trainer who manages the Community Resilience programme at Cultivate Living and Learning. He is based at the Cloughjordan Ecovillage and is a board member of GIY Ireland. davie@cultivate.ie

Ireland is an exciting place to be at the moment, there’s a ‘can-do’ attitude and a positive feeling in the air. Many of the most inspiring projects to emerge in recent years have grown from our desire to come together and innovate and the results inherently generate human interactions and foster inclusive relationships, leading to stronger, healthier, happier communities. I’ve been creating spaces and events for the past few years and as well as being fun, it’s begun to establish a new culture which offers alternatives to the pub, church or traditional community centre. Whether it’s through working, learning, making or eating together, these initiatives continue to inspire me to live and work here. Collaboration Smithfield is an urban space with great potential and Block T are at the forefront of the exciting new energies being generated there. Their latest initiative is a co-working and café space looking out onto the square. It’s a place to work, create and collaborate. Just reserve a desk for the times you’d like it. Another great collaborative spot is Mabos, a warehouse in Grand Canal Dock. It offers the perfect mix of entertainment and community. Becoming a member means you can attend gigs, workshops, play table tennis, use the skate ramps or get stuck into numerous other activities. A4 towers, Hendrons Collider, Basic Space, Moxie and JaJa studios are more artist-led spots

Sharing Knowledge Trade School Dublin kicked off last year and is offering great schedules in the coming months. It’s a non-traditional learning space where students barter with teachers to attend class and the concept has become a worldwide movement. Trailblaze is a dynamic platform showcasing and promoting creative and socially engaged ideas, people and possibilities. Taking place in underused and beautiful spaces, the powerful speakers and stunning music have made breathtaking and wonderfully inspiring events. thetrailblazery.com

Sharing Green Space 2013 was the year of Granby Park, a temporary park built by 500 volunteers in north Dublin. When the sun went down, we had many evenings to enjoy in front of an outdoor cinema screen, courtesy of the popup events company ‘Happenings’. Events like this look set to grow bigger and greener

Sharing Food Finally, it’s no surprise that the best gatherings take place over food, it’s something that seems to come naturally. For the past five years our Street Feast team have been encouraging people to take to their streets and share food together and this year the annual event will take place on the 15th of June. It’s a powerful feeling; sitting down to lunch in the middle of your road with all of your neighbours, kids out playing and no cars to be seen. What all of these initiatives have in common is that they provide a space for people to gather. It seems more than ever, we need to be establishing and maintaining physical spaces and social platforms that foster community and idea sharing. As well as the obvious benefits, there are countless knock-on effects and rewards and it’s in these places and in our revived culture that we’ll find even more opportunities to create, participate, collaborate and share. samuel@streetfeast.ie streetfeast.ie

Mark O’Sullivan, Homeopath Make new habits Start off by trying to recognise habitual tendencies and patterns of behaviour that are not serving you well. Set goals for new behaviours by listing the ones you would like to decrease and the ones you want to increase. Use the Bach flower remedies and a journal to support you in change!

Michelle Hone, Exercise Physiologist Blood sugar control As well as avoiding refined sugars and increasing our omega 3 intake, exercise is fundamental in blood sugar regulation. Though cardiovascular exercise is crucial, it is in combination with resistance training that it has its most powerful effects. Resistance training/weight bearing exercise has the strongest effect on insulin sensitivity, stabilising blood sugars and overall metabolism. Through resistance, we increase muscle mass and since muscle tissue is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, we quickly burn up calories. This type of training is also when our cortisol levels (stress hormones) are lowered. Exercise in general, but especially resistance and high intensity training, is associated with positive feelings and heightened energy levels. So to really put a spring in your step, start increasing and varying your exercise types.

Jessica Keane, Nutritional Therapist Gut health and happy foods Our gut isn’t just responsible for digesting food and absorbing nutrients. It houses an enormous number of nerves and most of our immune system. It helps control appetite, metabolism, energy, mood and immunity! The layer of cells that line the gut acts as a barrier between the foods and bacteria that enter the digestive system and the immune system; housed below the lining of the gut. To help avoid intolerance problems, keep your immune system strong and to fight autoimmune conditions, it’s important to keep that barrier perfectly in tact by achieving optimal digestion. It sounds complex, but we’ve got some handy tips. 1 Think about the smell and taste of your food and chew thoroughly as this stage accounts for 40% of digestion. 2 Avoid foods that cause wind, burping, bloating. 3 Eat a small bitter leaf salad before each meal. Bitter leaves includes chicory, rocket, frisée, radicchio. 4 Make soups and stews using homemade stocks.

Getting lots of fibre doesn’t have to be boring 1 Eight portions of vegetables per day including: avocado, asparagus, sweet potato, turnip, potatoes, beetroot, artichoke, brussel sprouts and broccoli. 2 Add oat bran and ground flaxseed or chia seeds to your cereal. 3 Take psyllium husk daily. 4 Two pieces of fruit daily. 5 Snack on prunes or dried apricots. 6 Eat at least one portion of brown rice, millet, quinoa, legumes (beans or lentils) daily.

Happy Foods 1 Tofu, chicken breast, turkey, wild salmon, sardines, halibut, mussels, eggs (though not too many), lentils, brown rice, green leafy vegetables such as spinach or kale. 2 Asparagus, tahini, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, banana, raw unsweetened chocolate powder. 3 Make use of plenty of spices such as cardamom, ground ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and herbs such as parsley, bay leaf, tarragon, coriander and dried marjoram. 4 Aim to eat oily fish twice a week. 5 One tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily.

Cornucopia’s raw living soups, juices, mains and desserts are prepared in such a way that nothing is heated over 40 degrees. Through dehydrating, marinating, massaging, juicing and blending, the dishes are equally tasty and on a par with cooked food. Fresh juices are a wonderful way to incorporate raw living food into your diet. A juice of cucumber, celery and apple is both delicious and cleansing. Add ginger, lemon or wheatgrass to put an extra spring in your step! Raw sundried tomato, olive and spinach quiche with a brazil nut crust Makes five individual tartlets Base 10 cm tartlet cases 175 grams brazil nuts 125 grams ground almond 75 grams melted coconut oil 25 grams ground linseed 10 grams nutritional yeast Pinch of salt and a grating of nutmeg Filling 175 grams of cashew nuts, soaked for 5-6 hours before use 75 grams sundried tomato, soaked for 5-6 hours before use Heaped dessertspoons of ground linseed 10 grams nutritional yeast Teaspoon of chopped garlic

15 grams of chopped oregano 65 grams of melted coconut oil 225 ml water Juice of 1 lemon Pinch of salt Topping 1 heaped dessertspoon of roughly chopped green olives combined with a handful chopped baby spinach

1 In a food processor, blitz the brazil nuts to a fine crumb. Add them to a large bowl along with the almonds, linseed, salt, nutmeg and the nutritional yeast. Mix everything together and add the coconut oil. Split the mixture into five equal sized pieces and divide them between five twelve centimetre tart shells. Press the mixture into the base and up against the sides of each tart shell. Make sure the mixture is of a uniform thickness and place them into the freezer to set while you make the filling. 2 To make the filling; drain and soak the cashews and add them to the food processor along with the oregano, garlic, coconut oil and the water. Blend until smooth and creamy before adding the remaining ingredients. Strain the tomatoes before adding them. Blitz the mixture to a fine puree. It can be passed through a sieve at the end for a very fine texture. 3 Remove the bases from the freezer and fill them with the filling mixture. Return them to the freezer for a few minutes before topping them with the topping mixture. Place them back in the fridge for at least two hours before serving. 4 Serve cold or at room temperature with some dark leafy greens and enjoy. cornucopia.ie

The Magic Question

43

How does it get any better than this? By Tom Galligan “How does it get any better than this?” is a question you can use on a daily basis to gain clarity and to bring new things into your life. When you ask a question, it opens the doors of the universe to provide infinite possibilities. A nice question to start your day with is, “Who am I and what grand and glorious adventures am I going to have today?” Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, tells a story of a lady who

came out of a class and found a dime in front of the elevator. She said, “Oh, how does it get any better than that?” and put it in her pocket. She walked out to the street, saw a ten dollar bill on the ground, put it in her pocket and asked, “How does it get any better than this?” Arriving home, she saw something glittering in the gutter. She reached down and picked up a diamond bracelet! No one is guaranteeing you’re going to turn a dime

into a diamond, but you can never tell what is going to happen. Just keep asking. Questions are the building blocks that allow change to come. What the question does is change the energy and so the universe can begin creating whatever it is that you just asked. Questions are the magic wand to creating everything you truly desire. accessconsciousness.com

Cork’s Shaman feelIng safe In a modern world. By Michael rob Costine Three years ago and quite by chance, I attended a meditation class in Cork city. Like most people, I didn’t really know what to expect. The word Shaman was not new to me but being in class with one was. I liked the welcoming and respectful nature of Rajinder Singh and my experience led me to attend more classes, a one to one session and a workshop. I could see the difference it was making in how I felt and perceived the world around me and it began to enhance my life. It opened my eyes to the role of the Shaman and what it means to be one. Rajinder is always open to sharing his own journey and his twenty years of experience to bring a practical and tangible understanding of Shamanic practices, ceremonies and rituals in everyday life to a modern world. Feeling safe in his presence is easy, he’s always in tune and ready to help. Last year, I travelled to Peru with his group and it was refreshing to see how the Q’ero Elders from the Andes and a Master Shaman in the Amazon held him and his work here in high regard. His vision of training others to do the same inspires me. The kindness, compassion and guidance he shares with all that come to see him leads me to believe that he is right when he says, “Soon, every community will have a Shaman/Elder, like the old days.” munaycentre.com

Okono Community Choir Step into a cathedral of sound. The Okono Community Choir is a new way of coming together to sing. Developed by John Bowker, the creator of Earthsong Camps, the choir offers a joyful musical experience and a friendly atmosphere. The choir is open both to experienced singers and those who want to have fun with singing for the first time. No one is put on the spot to sing alone. The Okono songs have been inspired by the musical traditions of Europe, Africa and beyond. The singers

learn parts by ear without the use of musical notation. The song is then sung in its entirety, repeatedly for up to an hour. This generosity of time allows the song to create something akin to a musical cathedral; a sacred space of sound, surrounding the singers and holding them safely inside. One the best-loved elements of an Okono class is the Heartsong. This is a special, multi-part harmony chosen for its ability to carry singers

How To Live in Love Embodying the principles of love. okono photos: patrick bridgeman

By Robbie H. Andrews Living your life in love, the true principle of God, can sometimes feel like it’s something that’s distant from us. Can we live in love, peace and harmony? Yes, this is our time, in our evolution to make a stand and start wearing the shoes of the true, light beings we are. The truth is there will never be a mountain that we can’t climb. Staying positive is something that now comes much easier to us, as our vibration moves that little bit closer to the etheric field; the place where God and the principle of love exist. We are human beings but we are also Angelic to Om Love.

into a deep meditative space. There, emotions may come to the surface in order to be released and the space is carefully held by John who has years of experience supporting people on their transformational journey. The simple tenets of the choir are mutual support and warm, human kindness to each other. There is no single ethos behind the songs, they can be enjoyed by people of any faith or none. All that’s needed is a love of singing and a longing for that deep, shared connection when people are united in song. okonosinging.com

The truth is beyond what we know but we find our way towards it through the principle of Love. In our search for happiness, as we awaken each day, we must first look for a simple breath. In this, we will understand that every breath we take fills our body, mind and soul with the principle of God Love. When we look at our life not just as a whole, but in the very moment we learn to adapt and see the goodness and greatness of that moment. It can be helpful to remember some simple rules to live by. Be love, be kind, be honest, be true, be positive, be humble, be grateful. In following these, I find myself every day asking, “How can I best change what I see, feel and know so that I may help others.” robbiehandrews.com

The Yogic Path the transformatIve powers of yoga and self. By Annette Fitzgerald Before I started doing yoga, I had low self-esteem and little confidence. Through the practice of yoga, I have experienced huge transformation. I feel a lot more comfortable in who I am and I am very content in my life. I feel I have gained inner peace and found a sense of purpose and belonging. I feel I am going from strength to strength. Golden Glow Yoga College in Cork and SriMa International School of Transformational Yoga Ireland offers a focus in yogic practice for individuals and for those on a deeper path to become a yoga teacher in a non-judgemental and non-religious community of equals. Whether you see yourself as a beginner, advanced student or experienced teacher, they encourage you to actively experiment with the insights of others. The variety of the experience encompasses the complete yogic path in a relaxed, informal setting. GGYC also offers workshops and training to expand your practice and your personal growth with traditional methods and contemporary awareness. With my new-found confidence I decided to sign up for the teacher training programme so that I may invite others into their equally beautiful, yet totally unique path.

Everything is energy. We are energetic beings finely tuned to resonate with one another and the natural frequencies of the earth. Huge changes in recent years have changed this natural resonance. The explosion in our wireless world has created a sea of electro-pollution. This man-made energetic interference can be challenging to live with and could be impacting our health. The debate quietly continues but it may be time we each took steps to care for our own wellbeing. How do you feel when you wake up in the morning? Do you feel energised and revitalised, ready for the day? What is your energy like when you use your mobile or work at the computer? Stop for a moment, and tune in to how you feel. Your energy system is open. We receive and transmit both subtle energy and identifiable electro-magnetic frequencies. For example, if your radio signal is poor hold the antenna and your body will receive the frequency, like an aerial, and improve the reception. If you are feeling a little flat and want to discover ways to lower the effects, you might want to explore ways to revive and retune your energy. In the mean time, try turning your WiFi router off at night, keep your bedroom free from technology and use a corded phone at home. energydots.co.uk

Ancestral Healing enables us to either hand back or transmute memories held in different levels of our consciousness. My understanding is that we hold memories of what we have experienced from conception, to now. Soul Memory, Ancestral Memory and other strands intertwine with these. As a soul, we choose a certain family or lineage that will give us the perfect conditions to learn lessons and heal. Our experiences become imprints in our energetic field and/ or physical body, but can be transformed to positively impact our health and wellbeing. Sometimes, one member of a family who is more acutely aware of ancestors may choose to ‘do the work’ of healing the lineage so that the next generations can be free of old patterns. In the same way that we hold a memory of what we experience in our childhood, we can respond to a situation that our parents or grandparents were afraid of. These multi-generational effects can even become part of the collective consciousness of a country. It has been my experience that we still hold ‘Famine Memory’ in the Irish psyche. We are at a time where we have the opportunity to move beyond this, change the patterns and re-empower ourselves. The ripple effect of a conscious choice now, extends forward and backwards releasing ourselves and our ancestors and allowing us to co-create a new legacy. maryohalloran@hotmail.com 087 2830950

Bon Appétit Music and mindfulness for better digestion. By Miria Robinson

49 Many people now see a physician about digestive health issues, but prior to the massive amount of pharmaceuticals that have entered the market, digestive problems were frequently treated with herbal remedies; like teas with ginger and peppermint. These are both still used to help women handle morning sickness. While herbal remedies help to alleviate symptoms, it is better to learn ways to prevent the problems in the first place if we can. In his book ‘10 Tips on Healthy Ageing’, Patrick Holford suggests, “Don’t eat when you’re stressed. Too much adrenalin shuts down digestion. Take a break, sit down, chew your food well and enjoy your meal.” Nutritional therapist Erica Gibbon explains that there is a nerve highway connecting the gut and the brain. In fact the gut has its own ‘brain’ which can react to

stress by shutting down parts of the digestive process and Cillín Cleere of Eats of Eden in Limerick suggests eating in a ‘Rest and Digest’ or ‘Alpha state’. Harnessing stress management techniques such as mindfulness meditation can help create this Alpha state, as can be achieved by playing calming music, such as classical music or brain wave slowing music, like ‘Silence of Peace’ by John Levine. The music helps our ‘gut-brain’ to become relaxed, which can help keep our digestion running smoothly. Levine’s Alphamusic, recommended by nutritional professionals, such as Holford, has been shown to help people chew their food slower and lower cortisol levels. silenceofmusic.com

On the Mend with Ondamed Where technology meets therapy. By Mary Moore

Ondamed is a PEMFT (Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Fields), class ll, medical device that brings about fast, effective relief and healing, with no side effects. The Ondamed technology is fairly new to Ireland although it is in use all over the world and in many hospitals. In October 2010 my husband was in a car accident and although he

didn’t receive any visible injuries, he was in pain. A year later, when it wasn’t improving and conventional medicine had nothing left to offer him, I decided I would have to find another way to help. After much research, I found Ondamed and instinctively felt this was the answer. We flew to Germany for training, with my husband still using two

crutches. While there, he received two treatments. We flew home a week later with no crutches and he was walking straight again. Not all of his pain was gone but he was well on his way. Today he looks and feels fit and healthy. It was because of this experience that we started a ‘New Way 2 Health’. Ondamed can be used as a treatment of its own, or to complement other treatments, such as pharmaceuticals, homeopathic remedies, nutritional supplements and other therapeutic modalities. Currently A New Way 2 Health is based in Co. Meath but we will be setting up practice together with Dr. Mary O’Riordan in Dublin in 2014. anewway2health.ie

Sacred Sound A divine instrument of healing. By Mildred Ryan

Can you imagine chanting or singing yourself back to vibrant health? Life is full of surprises and exciting possibilities. My life took an unexpected turn a few years ago and I found myself dealing with a health challenge. So, I took a few months off work to go on retreat in the west of Ireland. Every day, I sat in my special place in nature, Here, out of sight of anyone, I could tone, chant and sing my heart songs and I received deep and powerful healing. I was aware of energy flowing along my energy meridians, filling my cells with high frequency light, while removing or cleansing stagnant energies and old thought forms. Sometimes, just listening to sacred music allowed my consciousness to soar and connect with the Divine. I was even aware of dormant parts of my brain being activated. I’m passionate about my work with sound. I love showing people how they can heal themselves, either by using the sacred sound of their own voice through toning, chanting, humming or singing or by working with singing bowls, musical instruments or drumming. I have seen the transformation that occurs when people are nurtured in a wonderful, sound healing balm and my heart’s desire is that you will be empowered to find your healing notes and sounds, and return to wholeness of mind, body and spirit.

A Sound Girl Sound therapy and training with Galway girl Patricia Lohan. By Elva Carri

After seeing Patricia Lohan demonstrate the powers of sound at a Buddha Bag meeting, I was intrigued and delighted to be able to follow up with a series of sessions. I had never considered sound therapy before. I’ve long been aware that at gigs, I’m often more affected by the lighting than the sound and wondered if sound could affect me in the powerful way it seems to affect others. I went to my first session concerned that it ‘might not work on me’. I needn’t have worried. Lying, in a warm room in the presence of a person who emanates love, care and friendliness is the first thing you feel, but the physicality of the vibrations of the bowls was incredible. Even ones that aren’t touching you emanate a frequency that resonates within your cells; like a gentle massage of tiny parts of you that are rarely treated to such sensations. Patricia closed each session with a chat and insightful, practical advice. As well as it all feeling wonderful, personal results over the four weeks ranged from experiencing meditation in an entirely new way, to noticeably sleeping more soundly and heightened levels of fun and creativity in my day to day life.

As well as group and solo sessions, Patricia offers training. She lights up when she talks about this aspect of her work and shares stories of people she’s trained and their clients’ experiences so I can only imagine her teaching is as magical as her healing. patricialohan.com

Andrius Bogusas is a man with a business that has built its foundation on one key principle; high quality products that work. Finest Argan has been running less than two years and already this ethos is paying off, with salons that take organic seriously testifying to the superiority of their products. Rouge Salon in Ranelagh explained, “Because of the purity of the products, the oils give fantastic anti-aging effects and help to prolong youthfulness of the skin. The matcha tea is full of antioxidants which act as immune activity booster, calorie burner and effective detox.” Linda Joyce, Managing Director at Hair Temple in Temple Bar, recommended using the oil every night on your hair for one week to see the effects. Andrius began using argan oil on a trip to Morocco. Seeing the benefits, he decided to bring it to Ireland, but he didn’t take any short cuts. Andrius selects his contacts carefully and visits the companies supplying him to ensure it’s as pure as they’ve promised it will be. Chemically extracted oils actually inhibit the active ingredients and could even be the reason you haven’t seen the results you hoped for with other oils. One thing I loved about the products was the gender neutral packaging, a rarity in the cosmetics industry. As a treat, I’ve been using the argan oil on my feet and at the rate it’s working, one more week and they’ll be as soft as a baby’s! finestargan.com

Crop Circles & Mysterious Balls of Light By Geoff Fitzpatrick

53

Reports of mysterious balls of light around crop circles are common. I’ve seen testimonies from a French family, musicians, tourists, lecturers, researchers and circle makers alike. In fact, the occurrence of little balls of light flying over and around crop circles have become so common that it has become an area of agreement between the divergent camps of opinion on this subject. For those who believe crop circles have a supernatural origin, these orbs of light represent clear evidence that there is something from behind the veil involved. But interestingly, the self-professed human circle-makers also recount extraordinary tales of strange lights in the field, orbs and flashes in front of their eyes when making the circles. Many people report these balls of light to be plasma-like in their appearance and although their size may vary they commonly are a little smaller than a beach ball. Many people report not just seeing the balls of light but also experiencing a sense of interaction with them. They seem to respond to the inner thoughts of the observer and a telepathic connection is experienced. I am fascinated with this aspect of the crop circle mystery. Light-questing is a new movement born out of these experiences with balls of light. So now, many people visit crop circles not merely to see what is left on the ground, but in pursuit of what they may see in the sky. mandalanature.com

Restoring the Balance Peppermint tea, treats and chats with Julie Owens from Restore.

crop circle photo: STEVE ALEXANDER temporarytemples.co.uk

By Elva Carri When I asked Julie what her favourite thing about Restore is, she answered quickly and with a big smile on her face, “The people!” She says it makes her world sparkle when people come in to let her know they have been ‘restored’ and by the sounds of it, this happens a lot. This is not surprising considering Julie has studied naturopathy, reflexology, massage and aromatherapy and trained alongside Patrick Holford, Jan de Vries, the A. Vogel team and Gillian McKeith. And she’s still reading to make sure she’s up to date. This is one dedicated lady. Even a short visit feels more like a personal consultation than a shopping trip. In trying to decide on a new face cream, Julie helped me pick out the perfect product but also took the time to explain the importance of our liver in looking after our skin, “Oily skin depends on diet, it’s an indication of the efficiency of your liver. Dry skin is because you’re not having enough oils, like fish oils, or can indicate that you need to clear out your liver.” When I asked her about great new things to try out this Spring, she said Sunwarrior’s Ormus mix is great and uses it herself. “It’s expensive but it’s absolutely amazing. It’s a complete concoction of super greens, manufactured in a base

that preserves the high enzyme activity.” Wanting to be able to cater to all of your needs, they also have a holistic centre upstairs, offering everything from free lunch time meditation to yoga and pilates classes, massage, herbalism, naturopathy and more. therestorecentre.ie
