1 Brain Chill

By Claire McNamara

Straight-up chillin’ for 20 minutes a day will make your brain better. So, alongside all the physical activity you do for your body – it’s now time to exercise your brain, but unlike sweating it out at the gym, your brain requires a much more relaxed approach! The recommended ‘Chill Time’ is 20 minutes and provides a vital chance to review and assess your thoughts. No strenuous workout or physical activity needed – just a relaxed environment to watch your thoughts float. Meditation is like medicine for the brain. “By practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life”, says Britta Holzel

“…eight weeks of meditation will change the shape of your brain” who completed a PhD in neuroscience, focusing her research on how meditation and yoga affect the brain. And according to Harvard’s study on how eight weeks of meditation will change the shape of your brain, it enables you to navigate the neural pathways in your brain leading to better focus and memory. The brain thinks on average 60,000 thoughts per day and to be in the zone of flourishing, the more of those that can be positive the better. So next time you

feel under duress to exercise your limbs, also give a thought to the 12 pounds of mass – the human brain – that needs 20 minutes of ‘Chill Time’ to function properly. Never forget the brain works on a voluntary basis 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and doesn’t ask for anything in return! Maybe giving it this rest period will actually put you in perfectly positive form for heading to the gym after. sciencedaily.com

4 The Nine Nanas By Elva Carri When you think of a bunch of old ladies, it’s nice to let a number of very sweet stereotypes come to mind initially. Grey haired women in pale colours who smell of baking and lavender, with soft faces that are lined with the wisdom they’ve learned and the kindness they’ve chosen. What may not pop to the fore of your thoughts is an incredibly organised, secret, well run operation. Which is why it’s good to not

let stereotypes affect our estimation of people, because for over 30 years, nine women in Tennessee have been running what is basically a kindness gang, without even their husbands finding out. “MaMaw Ruth would read in the paper that someone had died and she’d send off one of her special pound cakes. She didn’t have to know the family. She just wanted to put a little smile on their faces. And we started thinking about what we could do to make a difference like that. What if we had a million dollars? How would we spend it?” Together they came up with a plan to spread a bit of happiness or relief. They begin baking at 4am, ensuring they have enough treats for anyone who could do with one, but have also paid utility bills, bought clothes and more. They find out who’s in need of something often by eavesdropping on conversations as they go about their daily lives. To afford it, they cut down costs in their own lives where they could and began clipping coupons. To date, they have contributed nearly $900,000 of happiness to their local community. That’s pretty close to their “If we had a million dollars” start, and all it took was secrets, the best kind of mischief, absolute loveliness and a whole lot of time and effort. dailygood.org

Buzzfeed interviewed her after she broke not one but two world rock climbing records! She conquered what is likely the toughest rock climb ever done by a woman: ‘Open Your Mind Direct’ in Santa Linya, Spain. She’s currently the youngest person to have achieved a climb that challenging. True to teen trends and popular forms of communication, they decided to interview Ashima, an avid Instagrammer, via Snapchat which captured perfectly the young girl’s wonderful sense of fun and adventure. instagram.com/ashimashiraishi

2 Making the Most of Now By Claire McNamara Making the most of every day should be a priority on everybody’s to-do list. As singer Willie Nelson once put it, “I have a wonderful future behind me”. This is not a pessimistic way to live – far from it, it’s a valuable reminder not to waste life on unimportant issues. Of course, life is unpredictable, and people face challenges emotionally, spiritually and mentally, but even in the face of adversity we should not think ourselves into a new way of living, but rather live yourself into a new way of thinking. William Blake captured it beautifully when he said, “The mind altering alters all.” This is a practical and pragmatic way to live life – to know that as humans, we can alter our life by altering our thinking. The late mystic and poet, John O’ Donohue, had a compelling philosophy on ways of altering your life. He encouraged humans to delve into the cloud of unknowing and to search the soul for the seven thoughts that govern, shape and

“Each day is a gift, do not send it back unopened” determine your life. Such an exercise would force the imagination to go places it has never gone before, but in order to have a meaning in your life you yourself must give life meaning. There is no future in the past and no safety in the future, but when you live life moment by moment, you realise that is all you really have. Life is not a problem to be solved but rather an experience to be had. By cherishing and living in the moment - it is the ticket to freedom and peace of mind. We can’t take anything with us in life, not even our pains and struggles. We all leave with an empty suitcase. Each day is a gift, do not send it back unopened.

8 If you asked Jorge Munoz what he does, he’d probably tell you that he’s a school bus driver. That’s definitely one truth but doesn’t really tell you much about what he’s doing the rest of the time. For over five years, every day, he’s come home, rested for ten minutes, had a coffee and then gets to work on job number two. A job he puts not only a lot of time into but also a large percentage of his own earnings. In his small apartment, he sets about cooking up a storm with some help from family and friends. Then he heads out to a street corner by a subway stop in New York to dish out 120-140 dinners to whoever needs them. He’s been doing it so long he says the people he meets feel like part of his family now. “When I started there was just like, eight guys. Two weeks later there was twenty four.” He says it kept growing but there’s been sharp jumps in numbers in the last six months and he says that that’s not due to word of mouth anymore, it’s the economy. The economy of Jorge’s own life is that he earns about $700 dollars a week and spends about half of that on food, drinks and packaging. Why does he do it? “God and my mom. She taught me to share...and when you see them smile, that’s the way I get paid.” But others have paid testament to his efforts too, receiving a Citizens Medal from Barack Obama in 2010 and named a CNN Hero in 2009.

spirituality & the city What does love mean to you?

Kieran Ring CEO at The Global Institute of Logistics

Love is the magic grown-ups get to keep. It is a decision taken to nurture something precious while it grows into something far better than you had ever imagined. Love is both the easiest and the hardest thing in the world. Love is listening. It is caring more about another person than you care about yourself. It is a moment where everything changes from me and I, to we and us. Your world shifts. Love is in the quiet and it is in a 3am argument over whose turn it is to buy milk. It is having someone beside you when you fail, having your hand held, being told all is okay. Love is being picked back up so you can move on to succeed. Love is all consuming and crazy and makes little sense. Love is a blind belief, truth and trust. Love accepts you for who you really are. The best thing about love, it is only the beginning of a much longer story.

To me Love is a language. I was blessed that my parents spoke it fluently and passed it on to me as a child. It has a limited number of words, each of which contain light. It’s spoken politely, with a soft tone and mysteriously, you forget it in your sleep! The language is good for 24 hours and has enough words for just one day, after which a fresh supply has to be downloaded (best done first thing in the morning). When I forget to do this, I speak naturally and I just have to have my say! I speak loudly and I feel important. Instead of listening I interrupt, my words are coarse and the world seems to darken. (The world doesn’t darken, I do!) When I speak in love, I don’t have to have my say. I speak softly and the hearer feels important. I listen, my words are soothing and the world seems to brighten. (The world doesn’t brighten, I do!) You can add special words to the language. Mine are Siobhan, Petra, Toni, Jack, Reuben and Caleb, their love means everything to me!

Sandra Smith Yoga Teacher, Energy Bodyworker & Nutrition Consultant I used to think that love was a feeling. That it was something that could be given and taken. Something that you could fall into and out of. I grew up hearing how we should love our fellow man and then that we must learn to love ourselves before we can truly love another. Now, I believe that love is what we ‘are’ at our core! I believe that I ‘am’ love! Although I have had lovely experiences over many years of practicing yoga and meditation, this feeling of ‘I am love’ has never resonated with me as strongly as it now does, since I’ve started practicing and teaching Tantra Kaula Yoga. The feeling of freedom and non-judgement allows love to flourish and most importantly create healing within. Facebook: Tantra Kaula Yoga.

Aiyanna Diyamayi Meditation Teacher of the Amartya Tradition For me, Love means to be present to my true authentic being, that lives forever free beyond the clouds of the mind and to allow that into expression. It is an availability for the one divine will that wants to create through all of us in perfect orchestration, to fulfi l the need in every moment. It is an act of humble and innocent listening for that part of divine will that wants to flow through you and me in every moment – and to allow that to become real. It takes courage, truthfulness and self-compassion when we no longer try to fulfi l expectations in order to be loved, and honour ourselves through allowing our true nature, love and creativity to be expressed. And so we let go, listen and live our deepest truth – and give ourselves permission to make mistakes on the way. To take those courageous steps beyond our fears and to live with an undefended heart is the highest gift of Love and nurturance we can give to our beloved, ourselves and the world as a whole. And what we receive in return is true purpose, true fulfi lment and true relationship. aiyanna.de

Yahaira Reyes Jimenez Author Once again, the universe gives you what you need when the time is right. The request for this piece comes precisely as my heart is being broken, for the millionth time. And what better way to think about the meaning of Love than when you’re crying a river, listening to sad Latino songs and shouting “why me?” to the sky. Perfect timing! Love is peace, the idea that a missing part is back in its place, and that your heart is complete. It is not the need of having someone next to you to love and cherish daily because this will make you happy. I am already happy, but love often feels like a physiological need to share all the love inside me with another human being. At times I fear that if I can’t share it soon, my chest will overflow; and I will end up hugging strangers on the street, just so I can be rid of so much emotion and can walk, once again, as light as the breeze. fictionhaze.com

paddy Honan Life and Business Coach Defining love is always a challenge, as we are really talking about different concepts. On the one hand, romantic love or ‘Eros’ as the Greeks called it, is the intense attraction between two people. This is circumstantial and is really love of two personalities, striving or pretending to be perfect for each other. This popular ‘in love’ phase is not love, but attraction or infatuation and can sometimes quickly turn into hate or anger. Spiritual love or ‘Agape’ on the other hand, is love for the sacred reality of each human being. This form is beyond circumstance and is principle based. It drives us humans to extend beyond our own interests, to suffer for the well-being of our fellow humans and to rise above creature comforts. This sacrificial form of love is also found in intimate relationships. While we may believe that needing someone is love, the truth is that when we help each other to grow, irrespective of how it makes us feel personally, is when we really begin to love each other. paddyhonan.com

creating our new

reality Cultivating within, reflecting without.

By Andrew Smith

12

The creation of your reality is contained within a simple truth – that which is within reflects that which is without. In the same way that you attract and subsequently bond with people who share your values, you also create systems in your life that reflect those values. Similarly on a larger scale, the systems that we live within, including the patriarchal, hierarchal, authoritative corporations, religious institutions and political systems, only exist because we have given our consent to them to exist. The massive deconstruction of the external world that has taken place over the past five years is largely a result of a monumental inner awakening. You have had to face, name, understand, heal and embrace your Shadow; you have had to get to a point where you can LOVE it. In doing so

your Shadow no longer has a hold over you. By clearing your inner world, you clear the outer world. Without those inner enemies the System has no hold over you and cannot exist. The System can only feed off your unprotected Self. Therefore there is nothing to stop you other than you yourself! However, many people tend to recreate what is familiar when they travel to a foreign country, seeking comfort in an Irish bar despite being in Havana, because the fear of being free is as powerful as the fear of being trapped and controlled. The key to living freely and openly is to face your inner enemies. When you lay down your worries, you leave behind your frustrations and anger; when you give up your position and your dreams of your special status, you will learn to find ease in risk. Fear and self-doubt are the part of the

“So find a spot within a leafy glade; lie with your eyes open, watching the cascading clouds rolling over each other”

old way and not the way forward. As long as they exist within, the old order will attempt to survive by nurturing in you those egoic vanities. Shedding the last vestiges of those deeply ingrained limiting thought forms is precisely what the energetic conditions of the summer of 2015 are all about. Saturn is a term that astrologers use to describe how you define how you limit yourself. Pluto symbolises the process of deep, inner change. Throughout the summer these two planetary archetypes are engaged in a deep conversation concerning what inner enemy you need to face, name, understand, heal and embrace. Over a 40 day period during the late summer, you have a chance to go inwards and understand the hold that matter has over your soul, binding you to your addiction to fear and anxiety. Myriad spiritual traditions speak of a set of common themes interwoven into the notion of ‘40’ – ritualistic cleansing, purification, prayer, inner reflection, stillness in preparation for a renewal of spirit and ultimately a rebirthing of the light within. This inner conflict tends to cease, having emerged from a cave, mountain top or desert, illuminated, enlightened and at peace. Our stories are ultimately cosmic ones and they retain the knowledge of our stellar origins encoded in the lives of those who have inspired our spiritual traditions. This 40 day purification, replenishment and revitalising of your consciousness is the story of the Inner Journey of the Light Bearer, Venus and it takes place in late July through to early September Venus. This is a perfect time to face your Shadow as you are offered a time to gauge how free your spirit is from the control of matter. I would ask you to keep foremost in your meditation the following questions: »» Are you being seduced by the allure of security and playing it safe? »» Do you trust in your body’s intelligence to guide you to do the right thing?

As Hope returns to the Earth (as Jupiter ingresses into Virgo), you merely have to take the time to listen to Nature’s intelligence within and around you. So find a spot within a leafy glade; lie with your eyes open, watching the cascading clouds rolling over each other on the jet stream, behind the ceaseless swaying of the branches of the trees; bring your attention to the susurration of nature all around you as She talks to you through the rustling, murmuring and whispering of the leaves and the heaving and creaking of the

boughs or limbs. Whilst listening to Her tender voice, draw your awareness to your breathing, drawing the vital energy of life, murmuring the Aramaic word, Inanna, and exhaling whilst susurrating the word Rakhma. Within this still place, you will start to observe how the trees around you have synchronised with your rhythmic breath, leaning towards you as you inhale and veering away from your as you exhale. Within this space, ask whatever your heart desires and listen. Whatever image arises within your mind’s eye, trust, as within this quiet space you have connected consciously with the vegetable intelligence within and around you and the answer has been symbiotically passed into your consciousness. A new world is birthing. There are new rules. There is an alternative agenda – to live to your highest potential. Why shouldn’t you make a living from what you love; from what you are passionate about; from your heart’s desire? Remember, with a heart free from fear and limitations and with gentleness, you can shake the world. Andrew’s private practice is in Blackrock, South Dublin. When that happens, confidence is truly in place. So, ask yourself: do I have a lot of great, inspired ideas that I never do anything with? That is, of course, quite the opposite of what we have been taught. The definition of confidence is: full trust. And yet, our society has educated us in the belief that we can never trust our own judgment, and God forbid we really trust anyone outside of ourselves; and it is actually impossible to trust ALL energy. Quite a conundrum, don’t you agree? If creation takes confidence, and confidence is trust, and we are taught we can’t trust, then we can never be the confident vibration that creates. At the very intimate and powerful workshop in Sierra Madre we uncovered a huge piece of information: We have been hiding our money so we can find it. What was really amazing was the process of information that brought this answer to us. I was working with one of the participants on money and money flow. She has done an enormous amount of work around this subject over the years, so we were determined to get to the root and finally put it to rest and allow abundance to come in all its glory. Firstly, we discovered she didn’t want the highest answer. So we shifted that. The channel said it had something to do with her mother. Her parents were well off and gave her what she wanted most of the time. One part of the process, in going to a specific age, prompted her to remember a story about her mother chasing her and breaking a heel off her shoe. That information knocked me against the wall energetically. Was it about her mother’s high heels?! There was a pause. A silence. If I

positive home

feng shui for 16 Making space for two. By Amanda Collins When you enter your home, you should feel your spirits rise, for your home is the outward expression of your inner life. If you’re ready to attract love or enhance your present relationship then prepare your home as if you are already in that loving relationship. The first step is to make your home clutter free. Clear out anything from past relationships – gifts, photos, love letters, anything with an old love’s energy on it. This supports you in letting them go. Next, create an open space in your closet for a future partner’s things. Add eight empty hangers to say “I am welcoming you into my life. I have space and time for you.” Make room in your drawers too, creating equal space for your belongings and your partner’s. Give unwanted items to someone who needs them, a charity, or a recycling centre, always honouring the earth as you

“I am welcoming you into my life. I have space and time for you.”

love decide where such things need to go. Your bedroom is the key to creating a sacred home that welcomes the love of your life. Televisions or exercise paraphernalia don’t belong here, and electronic equipment should be placed in an office or separate work area. Arrange items such as nightstands and lamps in pairs. Within those pairs, organise items of similar size; if one lamp on a nightstand is much larger than another, this will create an imbalance in the relationship. Whatever you do on one side of a pair, do the same on the other. Display artwork that suggests romance and intimacy. Anything that does not serve the bedroom’s function, that of offering rest and romance should be removed; this includes photos of friends and family. Colour matters too. Earth tones are soothing and grounding but you might also add small accents in the red spectrum, such as pinks, maroon, or berry. Try to create a room that is neither too feminine or too masculine. Find a balance so both feminine and masculine energies will feel welcomed and honoured in the space. Assure yourself that you are supported in life and love. Your bed should be positioned so there is enough space to walk on either side. You should not sleep in line with the door but should

see the door from your bed. It is best not to sleep under a window or have the bathroom on the other side of the headboard. And size matters when it comes to your mattress! If you are single with a single mattress, you will stay single, while a King size mattress doesn’t encourage romance either. Queen size is perfect for love. It is best not to sleep on a mattress from a previous relationship, but if you must, give it a clearing with some sage. Also remove clutter from under the bed so energy can flow freely. Rose quartz is the gem for love, compassion, healing and romance. Place two pieces on your nightstand; carry the gem in your purse or car. As jewellery, allow your gem to rest on your heart. As the southwest corner of your home is the area for love, place two pieces of rose quartz or two peonies – the flowers for love and romance, here. Treat yourself lovingly every day and do not wait for someone else to. Use your best bedding of satin or silk and wear your best underwear and nightgowns. Light your candles; buy yourself flowers. To attract love you need to be, first of all, completely loving with yourself. Be in that vibration of love in order to receive it. amandacollins.com InternationalFengShuiSchool.com

live like your life

depends on it Why your health is linked to your life purpose. By Sandy Newbigging

Health is much more than the mere absence of disease. It’s a state of holistic harmony that enables you to meet your individual needs while actively pursuing your life purpose. The more humanity moves from the heart to the head, the more conflicted and prone to being unwell we become. For the past few years I’ve been living by a simple philosophy that has improved my own health and helped the healing of the people I work with. What I like to call the ‘Body Calm Philosophy’ has the power to transform your relationship with life and make everyday experiences extra enjoyable and meaningful. Living by it, you see your stress-levels drop and become more able to help your body to heal and stay healthy. Beyond the likely body benefits, your relationships, career and wealth can be positively impacted. Quite simply, I cannot overstate the profound and positive paybacks that can come your way. But before I share it, I need to provide the all-important caveat – it won’t work if it remains an intellectual idea that you simply think about. It is an experiential way of relating to yourself and your life. Let the proof of the philosophy come from how your health, happiness, success and life satisfaction improve. At the heart of the Body Calm Philosophy is the premise that the purpose of your life is to live fully and completely. Although this might seem like a simplistic purpose, it is profound. Most people aren’t living fully or letting life events and experiences come to their conscious completions. All too often, people resist what happens or are attached to something different happening and, in the process, stop situations from fulfilling their positive purposes. They don’t experience life in its fullness because they are preoccupied by their mind-made version of reality, busy recalling the past, distracted from the present or focused on the future. They miss the magnificent moment and

19

“Live fully, aware of your remarkable self and the aweinspiring beauty and perfection of life.” the magic that is constantly unfolding. You don’t have to tentatively exist or merely ‘get by’. Live fully, aware of your remarkable self and the awe-inspiring beauty and perfection of life. Everything happens to help you to fulfill this purpose. You are perpetually presented with invitations to move from the head to the heart, stress to serenity and from separation to oneness – open up to seeing these invitations and taking these opportunities. No moment will ever be wasted in this state. Look at how you go about your day. Do you resist or rejoice? Do you fight life or use everything to learn how to be more flexible and free? Do you act the victim

or welcome the gifts you are given to grow? The choice is yours in seeing and accepting that life happens not to hinder, but help you. Instead of feeling attacked or bombarded by life, I invite you to assume everything happens to help you to live fully and completely. With the right mindset you can use all that happens, even the bumps in the road, as invitations to step up and wake up. Reclaim your power to peacefully progress towards your life purpose and be the healthiest and happiest version of your Self. Sandy will be returning to Dublin in the autumn to teach Body Calm Meditation. sandynewbigging.com.

positive beauty

the beauty of

self-love Cultivating a loving relationship with you.

By Mary Berkery Self-love may have received bad press stemming from some religious concepts on love and service, as well as possibly having the negative connotations that may come from looking at it as a selfishness or being wrapped up in ourselves. We live in a world where we can see how self-interest has created division between rich and poor, influenced wars, created ecological problems as well as heartbreak in relationships and communities. We have seen too what happens when someone gives too much to others and neglects their own life. Resentment may build up progressing to burnout or illness. The dictionary definition of self-love

“Do not get busy texting or looking at Facebook. Listen to your favourite music and relax back into yourself.”

is, “the belief you hold that you are a valuable and worthy person. An example of self love is when you have a positive view of yourself and are confident in yourself and your place in the world.” Faith, my mentor at a young age, often said: “Mary give from the overflow of your life. Keep your own cup filled then give from what overflows.” To a friend – Ann who gave much to her children – she would say “Ann, take care of number one, then you can truly care for your children.” Being able to say no is as important as saying yes. But how can we develop this incredibly important skill?

Explore your essence Exploring your essence opens you up to the magnitude of your being. Taking time to reflect and search the soulful nature of being builds intuition and assists in making courageous life decisions. When you explore your deep self, it can take you on a learning journey, letting go of limiting belief patterns and embracing new thoughts, feelings and passions. List your achievements My life coach gave me an exercise recently, to pen a list of my achievements, starting at age 0-5, then 5-10 and so on. He asked me not to censor, but to write what comes to mind. I was

20 especially touched to see what I achieved at tough times in life. It’s a good exercise for silencing the inner critic too!

List what makes you happy Gardening, singing, cycling, playing with kids, being with horses, having a massage, being a good friend to others, hosting dinner parties, quality time with my love and solitary time with self are a few that are on my list. When your list is complete, make sure to input them into your daily/ weekly/monthly life.

Take time to be alone This is quality time for practicing self-love. Do not get busy texting or viewing Facebook. Listen to your favourite music, have a tea, relax back into yourself. Sing, dance or stretch your beautiful body. I love to practice Yin Yoga in solitude times. This summer, sit still in nature and allow its beauty to nurture you. Love your body Treat it with nutrientrich meals, hydrating alkalinising water, summer green juices, smoothies and salads. Oxygenate with deep loving breaths and stimulating exercises. It will love you back in so many ways: body vitality, mental clarity and ease of movement to name a few. My understanding is that one’s essence is love and joy. When you deeply connect to this, you will love and enjoy others in a real way, avoiding becoming wrapped up in self. In fact, prioritising a connection to self-love produces empathy, authentic generosity and care in friendships and relationships. Mary Berkery is a personal development life coach. lorna byrne Lessons of love from the angels.

Interviewed by Paul Congdon and Elva Carri

22 Lorna Byrne is the author of Angels in My Hair and Love From Heaven, which now includes a seven day programme to increase self-love. Lorna sees angels as clear as you and I see each other and has seen them for as long as she can remember. Early in our conversation with Lorna, she mentions ‘unemployed angels’, so we have to ask her more about what this means! “Unemployed angels are angels that God has been pouring down onto the earth, I always say in bucketfuls. They’re there to help us with all the everyday, ordinary things. And once you ask for help, you are given it. For people reading this, I would say ask for an unemployed angel to come into your life or a friend’s or to come into the family to give you a hand. Many a time I’d see an unemployed angel giving an elderly person a helping hand and sometimes I would talk to the unemployed angel and ask if the elderly person knows they’re there, and they’d tell me “Lorna just look at their face” and just then a big smile would appear on their face.”

We are pure love “Each and every one of us, because of our soul, we are pure love. And it’s still all there inside of you, no matter what pain or hurt you’ve gone through, it’s still there, you can’t dilute it or throw it away, it can’t really be destroyed, we just have this habit of locking it away. The more you can learn to love

“Each and every one of us, because of our soul, we are pure love.”

yourself, then you can love others. Love is love and yet we put all kinds of labels on it. If you only look for romantic love, you miss out on all the love that is already in your life and all around you.” She tells us that even a kind gesture towards someone can help them unlock that love a little bit more. “It’s so important for us to be kind.”

The first time she saw love as a physical force was at home in her family between her two parents and she described what it looked like... “We were having a feast, we had a cake, this beautiful cake my aunt had brought to us. And the angels told me to pay attention, and seeing the love coming from my mum and da and it meeting and it being crystal clear. The only way I can describe it, it’s like ice in one sense, the way ice sparkles, but yet it’s soft and it’s warm.”

Is there a recent incident of seeing that physical force of love that you could tell us about? “There is one very close to my own heart. My mum was dying recently and just sitting at the end of the bed and watching all my own siblings come around the bed and they all taking hands and just seeing all of that physical force of love, crystal clear, coming from them, from every part of them, from their soul and it touching my mum. She wasn’t able to give it back at that stage but they were giving theirs to her.”

The Seven Day Process Each day there’s stuff I’ve written to help you, the first day is to tell you that you are pure love. And then there’s a card to carry with you in your purse each day to remind you of that. And there’s another day to remind you that you are deserving of love and there’s a few exercises in it as well. And I know it will stir up emotions, but emotions are actually love and it is a process.” She says since adding the seven day process to the book, people have already begun to thank her for how it’s changed their lives, and how they feel about themselves. Watch the full video interview with Lorna on positivelife.ie later this summer. lornabyrne.com

one small step for

your diet Uncover intolerances for better health. By Dr Gill Hart

‘Food Intolerance’ and ‘Food Allergy’ are often thought to be variations of the same thing but the biological processes behind them and how they affect people are actually very different. True allergy affects around 2% of the population whereas food intolerance affects an estimated 45%. YorkTest assess people’s Immunoglobulin G (IgG) reaction to specific foods in order to aid you in optimising your food choices and nutritional health, which we’re now well aware has positive implications for our emotional and mental well-being too. Since he was born, Darren Jerry had experienced poor health. His mother Jincy, a nurse working at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin, spent a great deal of time and energy caring for him and worrying about the number of problems he was having. “Darren suffered from bad eczema but he also had very bad problems with his bowels. He would have six to seven bowels movements a day and the situation was not getting any better. He also suffered from very bad chest infections. The chest infections and bronchitis resulted in him being rushed to accident and emergency rooms during the night time. We would be awake listening to his breathing and you could hear his rattling chest.” Darren’s health was showing no sign of improvement when a family friend recommended they try a YorkTest Food Intolerance programme. “You could say as a nurse I approached the YorkTest programme with doubt and certainly a cynical attitude.” The results of the test indicated Darren was intolerant to an array of foodstuffs, including yeast, carrots, nuts, beef and corn with particularly strong results to dairy and egg.

24 Taking action immediately but with fresh new hope, Jincy arranged a consultation with YorkTest

“Within a month I could see the change” Nutritional Therapist Catherine to talk through Darren’s results and understand how best to change his diet. Nutritional therapists are there to guide you through the process of replacing trigger foods with nutritious alternatives. With so much experience, they also know how to ensure your diet is not only nutritious, but varied and tasty, something important to adults, but also very important for young children learning to know and appreciate food and develop new tastes. “We cut out all of the foods which were marked as intolerant and the changes were dramatic. Within a month I could see the change – his bowel movements became regular and his chest improved dramatically.” Due to Darren’s various infections, he had been taking courses of antibiotics and antihistamine tablets. After cutting the problem foods out of his diet, Jincy was relieved to find his need for the medication dramatically reduced, with

darren and jincy

only an occasional requirement for antihistamines. Darren’s progress has been so successful he has been able to slowly and carefully reintroduce some of the foods he misses, such as bread, with caring Jincy always keeping a close watch on his health. “In simple terms, the test for us outlined what foods Darren should avoid. It makes it easy to follow and to start the changes in food intake that can have such a significant effect.” YorkTest do however recommend that you first contact your GP if you are encountering any of the symptoms mentioned. yorktest.ie

26 nurturing healthy

sexuality A tantric view on parenting and sexuality. By Dawn Cartwright

Children are naturally Tantric; everything they do, they do with their whole being and are open, adventurous and curious. How do we cater to their purity and innocence to nurture healthy sexual development? Being prepared can help you feel ready, calm and always loving and respectful in your approach. Infancy, 0-2 Years A new mother called me recently announcing, “He’s found his hands!”, followed by daily calls announcing new discoveries until one morning she exclaimed, “He has discovered the wonders of his penis!” Infants are curious about their bodies. Create a warm relationship and show them you care deeply. Teach them the correct names of their body parts, including penis and vagina. Early Childhood, 2-5 Years The mother of a 3 year old wrote to me concerned about her daughter’s great passion for her own vulva and vagina. Genital stimulation is a normal

self-soothing behaviour in children of this age. They may also engage in exploration with children of the same age, ask where babies come from and show curiosity about adult bodies. Be sure there’s a comfortable, safe, secure place in your home where your child can explore. Show respect for your child’s feelings and relationship to their body. Teach them the importance of boundaries and privacy, let them know their body belongs to them and they can say no to unwanted touch. Also talk to your child about feelings, teach them words to describe their feelings and model healthy ways of expressing them in your own life. When asked, share simple, accurate information about where babies come from. Middle Childhood, 5-8 Years Another friend recently posted, “Sitting in the ophthalmologist office waiting for the doc to arrive, I find myself pleading with my young son, ‘Please Jack, can we please not talk about farts and butts and penises and nuts?!’” Jokes about body parts and functions are a source of great hilarity at this age. Curiosity about gender and gender roles also heightens. Sex play with same and opposite sex friends may appear.

Talk to your child about appropriate times and places for jokes. Be open to answering questions about gender and sexual orientation. Children are also beginning to learn complex relationship skills such as how to focus their attention and calm themselves, so teach them simple ways to relax and focus. Late Childhood, 9-12 years. I remember a conversation with my sister when her daughter was 11, “She hates me! There’s a lock on her journal and a ‘KEEP OUT!’ sign on her door.” Understand that privacy and independence become important as puberty begins. Your child may show an interest in having a boyfriend or girlfriend, sexual curiosity grows and your child may seek out sexual information, images and content. Teach your child that privacy is important and should be respected. Let them know changes like menstruation and ejaculation are normal. Encourage open communication. Talk about the emotions that come along with sexual maturity and relationships. Ask questions rather than give advice, so you learn about your child’s concerns and show confidence in their wisdom. Engage in healthy relationships, self-care and emotional balance in your life so your child learns by observing you. only this

moment An invitation to now, with Eckhart Tolle. Interviewed by Paul Congdon

Ekchart Tolle wrote ‘The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment’ in the late 90s. It had such a profound effect on people, that it reached and remained in the New York Times bestseller list for years.

The book came about after years of emotional turmoil in Tolle’s own life. He recalled to us how one night, he spontaneously felt better. Although he couldn’t explain it at the time, he realised later he had surrendered to the moment. He went on to write ‘A New Earth’, a book on awakening to your life’s purpose, published in 2005. Even today, he tells us, the books come back into the bestseller lists and he laughs about how they have a life of their own. Is there another book on the way? He says he has been doing some casual writing about the teachings of Jesus, something he came to identify with the truths of later in life, despite a Christian background, but he says the books evolve if they need to, the consciousness he’s working in and through uses him as a tool. If there needs to be another book there will be. We asked him our questions and hopefully some of yours too.

What would your definition of love be? Love is the most vital ingredient in every human relationship, even a superficial relationship that only lasts for a minute. And perhaps we need to redefine what love is, because for many people it means, I want you. If that want is rejected, if it’s egoic love, it can very easily transform into anger. So what we are really talking about is a more transcendent love. The Dalai Lama uses the word kindness and we can add to that, ‘loving kindness’. Also goodwill or benevolence. Empathy is another word that is closely related to it. But no relationship can really thrive and be beneficial, whether between individuals or groups or nations, if that basic ingredient is missing. And how can we improve at that? Including the ingredient of love? What blocks the potential manifestation of love, loving kindness, benevolence, whatever you want to call it, is excessive identification with the conceptualising, thinking mind, which brings up judgmental screens through which you then relate to others. Rather than relating to others through your presence, you’re then relating to them through the conceptualising, judgmental preconceptions and the conditioning of your mind. The greatest barrier then, to

manifesting love and having satisfying relationships, personal or collective, is that excessive identification with the conceptual mind. Jesus recognised that too, he said, “Don’t judge”. If I can sense my essence, for a moment, being the space behind thought, there’s a moment of alert stillness. In that moment, I can sense my deeper being which is consciousness and that’s a beautiful, simple realisation. I’m not defi ned in form when I can sense myself as consciousness and then when I look at or listen to another human being, I can sense their essential reality as consciousness also. When I can sense their essential reality beyond their personality, I realise it’s one with mine. That recognition is the recognition of oneness and that is love.

30

How do you stay in that space of presence when you’re facing a deadline or are stressed about something else? Readers say they can do it meditating, but in the midst of the stresses of life, how

activity, even a simple thing like washing the dishes, you want to get them clean and back into the cupboards, that’s your aim. A very good practice would be to give your fullest attention to whatever you’re doing at this moment. Still knowing at the periphery of your consciousness what your aim is. When you’re on a journey, you know your destination and you know the path at least to some extent. You start walking towards it. If you’re too focussed on the destination you will not enjoy the journey, in fact you might get stressed because you haven’t arrived yet. You might think when you finally arrive at your destination, you will be fulfilled and happy but in the meantime, you’re ignoring the present moment, you’re only giving it so much attention that you don’t stumble. And your entire life really only consists of only this moment. In almost all cases you will find that your frustration is not caused by the circumstances but by the mental commentary that you impose on the circumstances.

when it comes to going through difficult times, or anxiety which you yourself struggled with, how can you give someone hope? Well on the one hand there is despair, and on the other hand there is hope and hope is certainly better than despair, but hope is not the answer. I would even be reluctant to give a person hope because it is a kind of postponement of happiness or satisfaction. I would rather suggest that here and now, see if something else is possible. If you’re anxious, you’ll probably find that anxiety is a pattern in your mind and no matter where you go or what you do you will find new reasons for being anxious. Shift your consciousness even a little bit, stay with just this moment and you don’t need hope any more!

what is the pain body? The pain body is negative emotion that lingers in you, that comes from the past, from childhood, or other periods in one’s life can add to it. When you identify with that pain, it becomes part of our illusory sense of identity, and you become an unhappy self. The moment the identification is broken,

then all that’s left is an awareness. You can sense it without identifying with it. Sever the link between the mind and the emotion so that you realise that there is the emotion, but it does not infiltrate your mind and control your thoughts.

And our form identity? The form identity is the physical body and psychological form or the personality, the other you is formless consciousness itself. It’s almost as if the form identity is the wave or ripple on top of the ocean. The ocean is consciousness. If you can sense that beyond all your thoughts, there is a conscious presence, that is the essence of who you are. Relinquish your thoughts and is there anything left? Yes. You will notice there is something. Even when you’re not thinking, you can sense that alive presence. That’s your deeper, formless identity. To have a fulfilled life, you need to be in both, you need to honour your limited form and realise who you are beyond the limited form. what is something you would really like to mention or talk about? Humanity, not all, but a certain percentage of humans on the planet are going through a rapid evolutionary change and I see that a lot because I’m one of those who are lucky enough or destined to be at the epicentre of that change. So a very frequent experience that I have, almost daily, no matter where I go, people come up to me, they recognise me, although often I try not to get recognised, I wear a big baseball cap, but people still recognise me and the most common thing I hear is, “I just want to thank you and shake your hand because you changed my life”. I don’t take that personally, I don’t think they’re absolutely right when they say I as a person changed their life, but I do know what they mean. They mean that it initiated a shift in consciousness in them and they became happier, more fulfi lled, more creative human beings, more loving. So I don’t take credit for it, but I’m happy when I hear it because it’s confi rmation that people are changing and awakening at a rate that’s unprecedented. ecosystems of

innovation TRAnSITIonInG fRoM ‘ME’ To ‘wE’.

By Davie Philip

“Pioneering the principles and practices that help us to transition from ‘ego-system’ to ‘ecosystem’ awareness, may well be one of the most important undertakings of our time.” Otto Scharmer, MIT Senior Lecturer. In the book he co-authored with Katrin Kaufer, ‘Leading From the Emerging Future’, Otto Scharmer suggests that we have entered an era of great disruption and that we are collectively creating a future nobody wants. He believes that meeting the challenges of the 21st century will require a monumental shift of consciousness – a transition from an out-dated ‘egosystem’ awareness, that of being focused on the well-being of oneself, to an ‘ecosystem’ awareness that emphasises the health of the whole and including oneself. To help people individually and collectively make the transformation that is needed, Scharmer has co-created a method for leading profound change called Theory U. This framework facilitates deeper thinking; it assists us to open our minds to moments of discovery and mutual understanding, and helps us avoid repeating old patterns and assumptions. Unless we transform the quality of the awareness we bring to our actions within systems, we will never transform them. I’m based in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage, a neighbourhood in rural Ireland that is pioneering low-carbon housing, demonstrating sustainability, and exploring how we collectively create a healthy environment to live, work and learn in. The community has many challenges but is fast becoming what Otto Scharmer calls, “a living ecosystem of innovation”.

“...an ‘ecosystem’ awareness that emphasises the health of the whole and including oneself.”

THEORY U FROM ‘LEADING FROM THE FUTURE AS IT EMERGES’ EXPLAINED 1 Co-Initiating Build common intent. Stop and listen to others and to what life calls you to do. 2 Co-Sensing Observe, observe, observe. Go to the places of most potential and listen with your heart and mind wide open. 3 Presencing Connect to the source of inspiration and will. Go to the place of silence and allow the inner knowing to emerge. 4 Co-Creating Prototype the New in living examples and explore the future by doing. 5 Co-Evolving Embody the New in ecosystems that facilitate seeing and acting from the whole.

With its many educational offerings, a community farm, an awardwinning bakery, research gardens, a green enterprise centre with co-working space and a FabLab, an eco-hostel and a vibrant community with plans for co-housing, youth leadership projects and more, it really is a brilliant environment in which to learn and co-create the future. Being involved has been enriching and incredibly satisfying for me but it’s not always easy and I often say it has been the longest and most expensive selfdevelopment course I have ever taken. To make the journey from a ‘me’ to a ‘we’ perspective, we need to better connect to ourselves, to others and to

the whole system. If we are to move beyond a society driven by values of self-interest, status and power towards flourishing communities and thriving local businesses, we will need to relearn the art of cooperation. This is best done through practices of sharing and mutual learning. Our community in Tipperary is no utopia but it does offer insights into the technologies that we will need to make the transition to a low-carbon society, as well as practical, experienced learnings and prototyping the behavioural and lifestyle changes that will be required. To accelerate and advance this shift from the ‘me’ to the ‘we’ will require more places like Cloughjordan and more change-makers who can co-sense, co-inspire, and co-create the future that wants to emerge. More details on Theory u can be found at presencing.com. spontaneity conversations sparking social change.

By Samuel Bishop “I only wish you’d run a rave here” was certainly not the parting comment I expected. We were packing up after a yoga retreat and the owner of the manor evidently had other dreams for her fairly sizeable estate. This impromptu comment was shared, the seed was sown, and it wasn’t long before a pretty special festival, ‘Another Love Story’, took place.

An organisation called ChangeX aims to kick-start spontaneous actions, impromptu conversations and exciting projects. They’re bringing these projects and great ideas together into a platform that will mean that these ideas can be replicated in communities across Ireland and scaled to become effective and efficient. Between ChangeX and the new School for Social Entrepreneurs, I believe we are reaching a positive critical tipping point in which

“Spontaneity is the land of idea generation.” Impromptu comments are wonderful. Spontaneous and from the heart, they break out of you in unexpected ways, knocking the receiver off-course, opening up new dialogue and usually sparking new ideas. Spontaneity is the land of idea generation. It’s where conversation crashes together, it’s the meeting of the waters, it’s the germination space, it’s the edge between, it’s that spark which ignites new potential. Everyday I meet people with new ideas for their community. New solutions for a better Ireland. New ways to improve society. I’m a huge believer in ‘the more you share, the more you receive’. By sharing your ideas, you’ll gain feedback, collaborators, encouragement, followers and support. Our villages and towns are crying out for new

indigenous herbal

cleansers DAnDELIon AnD nETTLE - MoRE ThAn juST wEEDS!

By Colleen Kennedy Nature is unwinding into summer with fresh green growths in full swing and flowers popping out in celebration all around us. Summer offers the perfect time of year to align ourselves with nature and welcoming in all it has to offer. We are blessed with many powerful cleansing and nutritive herbs this time of the year. Many of you may just call them weeds, but wait until you hear what power they have! The ‘organs of elimination’ are the functional basis of naturopathic and herbal medicine. We have five – the liver, lungs, bowels, kidneys and the skin. Running alongside these, we have our circulatory system and lymphatic system. They both aid in the removal of debris, metabolic

36

breakdown from internal and external toxins. These organs all need to be focused on if you’re involved in any kind of cleansing regime, because if one is struggling, it puts undue pressure on the others. For instance, when the liver is busy dealing with the usual daily toxins, and then has to deal with reabsorbed toxins from a constipated gut, it has to offload to another organ, which can often be the skin, in the form of rashes, breakouts and acne. There’s no point focusing on a liver cleanse, if you don’t move the bowel every day. We can help

support all these organs of elimination with a blend of herbs and nutrients and it is a great service to your body and mind to perform biannual cleanses, just like you service your car. In Ireland, we are also blessed with a great selection of local herbs to inspire and help us on our way. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis), or Tarax, as we herbalists fondly refer to her. What a powerhouse. The sunshine flowers can be eaten in salads and used to make a healing infused oil. The leaves are a famed diuretic, commonly used to treat water retention and sluggish lymphatic problems and suitable to use in salads. The double benefit here, is that dandelion is also rich in potassium, which is often left depleted after use of orthodox diuretic medication. Dandelion root is a fodder also often overlooked. The root has a bitter quality and so is more concerned with digestion and liver support. It stimulates the flow of bile and other digestive enzymes in our digestive system. Roots can be harvested

in the autumn and roasted to make a lovely earthy drink, Dandelion Coffee; no caffeine here. Nettle (Urtica dioica). Nettle leaves are a rich source of nutrients like iron, potassium and chlorophyll and have a great blood building quality. Nettle can be added to soups and stews, almost like you’d use spinach. I make a lovely nettle pesto with wild garlic. Nettle is also a good kidney tonic and strengthens the vitality of this organ while also encouraging the excretion of toxins. Used as a hair rinse, nettle infusion will help grow, thicken and darken your hair! Those who are prone to seasonal allergies would do well to drink a cup or three of nettle tea throughout the season. It will help reduce the inflammations associated with hayfever and allergic rhinitis. In fact, there used to be a practice of urtication in place throughout indigenous cultures, which involved self-lashing of nettles on the skin and joints to help with arthritis. This isn’t as common in our culture these days! The root of nettle is also useful medicinally, helping to reduce swelling of the prostate. Stickyback, Goosegrass or Cleavers, her Latin name is Galium Aparine. And

CNM

what a most impressive lymphatic cleanser! Cleavers work as a tonic to the lymphatic system while promoting the diuretic action in the kidneys. It has a long tradition of treating swollen glands, tumours and nodules. Cleavers can be taken as an infusion, tincture, juiced and the leaves eaten in salads. The sticky seeds can even be roasted and ground into a coffee substitute drink too. Other herbs worth a mention are Burdock Root, which has an affinity with the liver because of its bitter principles, but also helps with dry and scaly skin complaints such as psoriasis. It’s worth having a bit of patience with this herb as it can be slow acting, but effective when used over a long period of time. Yellow Dock Root (Rumex crispus) is another of nature’s little gems. The root when harvested is a yellow colour, and

has an active role in bile flow, thereby encouraging regular evacuation of the bowel. The anthraquinone glycosides are very potent peristalsis stimulators, but when accompanied by the tannins in this plant, it softens the action. Also a very nutritive plant, it is a source of vitamins A, B and C and minerals such as calcium. Finally a mention of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), Red clover (Trifolium pratense) and Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), all are worthy of including in your herbal cleansing repertoire! A word of caution, however. Please use common sense when harvesting these herbs, as they are often sprayed with weedkiller or growing near a road where exhaust fumes may be a problem. Choose a pollution free zone, and approach with gratitude! Consult your local herbalist and naturopath to find out more about supported cleanses. recipes Leave the shrimp in the sea.

By James Burke, chef at Cornucopia Dublin.

Here are a few recipes for a great outdoor summer meal, or with a little preparation, a tasty picnic. Originally from Indonesia, Tempeh is a traditional soy product and the only part that needs to be cooked. But by all means add some grilled corn on the cob and some marinated grilled vegetables to fill it out even more. At Cornucopia barbecues, we have served all of these along with some delicious Arun Bakery sourdough rolls and Blanco Niño’s

Barbecued Marinated Tempeh 4 portions 2 tablespoons sea salt 1 teaspoon black peppercorns 2 tablespoons rapeseed oil 1.5l warm water 1 bunch of oregano, tied with cotton string For the tempeh 400g tempeh, sliced into 8 pieces 200ml Piedmont dip BBQ sauce 1 Place the brine ingredients into a stock

pot over a high heat and bring to a boil. Add the tempeh slices and blanch for 5 minutes. 2 Remove the tempeh from the brine and place it into a storage tub. Strain about 500ml of the brine onto the tempeh to cover all the pieces then leave to cool. Discard the remaining brine. Marinate the tempeh in the brine for at least 4 hours, or overnight, stored in a refrigerator. 3 Remove the tempeh slices from the brine and discard the liquid. Finish the tempeh by placing each slice on a medium hot barbecue, or into an oven preheated to 200 Celsius. 4 Once the tempeh has been cooking for 10 minutes, brush the Piedmont BBQ sauce over it. Keep brushing on the sauce every few minutes until the tempeh is slightly crisped and the sauce has been absorbed. This should take another 10 to 15 minutes. 5 Serve with some sourdough bread rolls or corn tortillas, smoked garlic aioli, more BBQ sauce and red slaw.

new soft corn tortillas. When I make these recipes at home, I prep the sauces and tempeh the day before, which takes an hour at most. Then all I have to do the next day is fire up the barbeque, finish the tempeh, chop a few vegetables and assemble some sandwiches with heaps of time left for enjoying the food and the company you choose to share it with.

Piedmont Dip 250ml cider vinegar 180ml agave syrup 120ml water 50g tomato puree 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 Place all the ingredients into a saucepan and bring to a boil over a medium high heat. 2 Reduce the heat to a simmer and continue to cook over a medium low heat for about 30 minutes until the sauce has reduced to leave about 250ml. 3 Store the sauce in a fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Red Slaw of Spiced Cabbage and Carrot serves 4 to 6 1/8 head white cabbage (about 200g) 1/8 head red cabbage (about 200g) 2 medium carrots (about 200g) 1 small bunch chives (10g), chopped thinly 1 teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon chilli flakes 15ml olive or rapeseed oil 250ml tomato ketchup 1 Slice the cabbages thinly either using a

food processor or by hand and place them into a large salad bowl. Peel and grate the carrots and add them to the cabbage. Chop the chives also and add to the cabbage and carrot. 2 Next add the salt and oil, and stir it to combine.

3 Finally add the tomato ketchup and stir

it through to coat all the vegetable and herb mixture. Set aside until needed. The red slaw will keep for up to 4 days but is best dressed just before serving.

Smoked garlic and lemon Aioli makes about 250ml 50ml soy milk 30ml lemon juice ½ teaspoon sea salt 2 cloves smoked garlic 160ml cold smoked rapeseed oil 1 For best results and less washing up,

use a hand blender to make this aioli. You can also use a food processor but if neither is available a heavy jug, whisk and finely chopped garlic will work too. 2 Pour the soy milk and lemon juice into a jug. Add the sea salt and garlic then use a hand blender to puree. 3 Slowly pour the oil into the mixture and continue until the oil has been incorporated and the aioli is nicely emulsified and smooth. The aioli will keep for up to 10 days refrigerated. 4 If you can’t find smoked garlic then fresh garlic would be a suitable replacement. The smoked rapeseed oil I use is produced by Newgrange Gold oils from Co. Meath and, if you can’t find it, the smoked oil can be replaced with regular cold pressed rapeseed or olive oil. cornucopia.ie

Fertility Massage A holistic approach to improving fertility. By Clare Blake A fertility journey can be an emotional rollercoaster with a sense of losing control over your own body and feeling disconnected and many women search for a natural approach to support them and boost their chances of having a baby. Fertility Massage Therapy™ is a nourishing blend of modalities, that when combined, bring harmony and balance to the reproductive, digestive and sacral areas. On a much deeper and probably more important level, it also reawakens

and reconnects women to their bodies, especially their womb. Womb massage has lineage dating back thousands of years. Egyptian women massaged their wombs to heal themselves, Norse traditions also mention goddesses rubbing bellies to heal. Many clients from India, Africa, Russia and China have remarked that women in their homeland perform similar womb or belly massages. By massaging directly over the lower abdomen, circulation of lymph, blood and

energy is increased, helping women who experience ‘cold’ or ‘stagnant’ conditions such as painful periods, endometriosis, fibroids and constipation. Womb massage is just a part of the therapy, also included within a session are Rebozo and Pulsing techniques. Pulsing focuses on gently rocking and releasing the physical and emotional tensions held within the body, whilst the Rebozo will be ceremonially wrapped to enable the woman to feel safe and held. Together these all create a nourishing flow of feminine energy, leaving the client feeling whole, centred and nurtured on their fertility journey. fertilitymassage.co.uk

Aloha Health ThE hAwAIIAn hEALInG ART of LoMI LoMI. By Louise Kleu

Lomi Lomi is one of the healing arts practiced by the kahunas of Polynesia. This transformational bodywork was designed to balance and harmonise all aspects of the self through prayer, ritual, chanting, massage and the powerful spirit of Aloha. What brought me to Lomi Lomi 15 years ago was a profound experience of the treatment on a deep, personal level. It was an altered state of awareness and a nurturing of spirit I’d never experienced before and has been the cornerstone of my life ever since.

“The dance of life and breath from the heart, lomi lomi is like no other massage” Lomi lomi uses deep breath, rhythm and long flowing strokes with the forearm and hands up and down, under and all around the body. It is guided by intuition which comes from the heart. It becomes an interactive dance between giver and receiver based on trust and gentleness, with powerful results. Often described as “the dance of life and breath from the heart”, lomi lomi is like no other massage, it is an experience which overwhelms the mind with sensation, touching a deep core within with the knowingness that we are all interconnected and that the body heals itself with an activation of its own energy, mana. Your body is the home of your subconscious which contains energetic patterns of thought, complexes, belief systems and emotional memory. All this you can access through breath and bodywork. Sometimes it takes bodywork to bring into awareness these patterns and create an abundant flow of mana in our bodies and in our lives. louisekleu.com

Heart Knowing Gateway to the Infinite. By Glenn Sullivan

There are many paths on the spiritual journey to realisation of our true nature and reality. Nearly all paths speak of the importance of listening to and following our hearts. In listening to this inner wisdom, we begin to open to infinite possibilities. Real wisdom is beyond words, it’s a transformation that comes from knowing, we may not be able to explain it to another, but we can feel the truth of our knowing. The heart is the gateway to the infinite and the divine, the one true self Spirit/God. It is in the continuous surrendering of ego to the heart, so that ego can be fully integrated into the truth of our Being. When we begin to live a life that is heart-based and in the flow of the divine moving through us, our lives become more embodied in love and truth. On this unfolding journey, my partner and I have spent many years exploring the inner landscapes of the heart, to reveal such wonder and profound depth that we felt called to share our experience with others. Our vision is clear, to create a beautiful and safe environment for people to find their true authentic being and divinity. At our workshops, we bring people together and support them in diving deep into their heart space through a Sacred Cacao

Ceremony. We move into expansion with trance dancing and call in the new with an evening ritual of firewalking to bring our vision into reality. naturalwisdom.ie

Starting at the Source Celebrating our lifegiving rivers. By Katie McShane In November 2014, six tutors of the Irish College of Sound Healing met to focus on sharing the power of sound in Ireland. Together, we surrendered in voice, allowing our essence to express freely. It was rhythmic, ecstatic, powerful and sacred. Out of the silence that followed, words formed and Sounding to Source was born. What is Sounding to Source? On St. Bridget’s day 2015, up to 50 people made a pilgrimage in the crisp snow to Shannon Pots in Co. Cavan. All instruments, from voices to harp and gong, resounded the waters as we joyfully offered our hearts’ prayers to An Sionann, Ireland’s mother river. We met at the Liffey for the March Equinox. The source was a dumping ground for all sorts of rubbish. Four hours later it

was Utopia, the area was cleared physically and energetically and children were playing across the waters, there was joyful singing and prayers offered to our life river. So, it continues, Ireland’s many rivers are calling us. Honouring the Source, which represents the beginning, the place of origin, the absolute, that which is, connects us to all waters, within and around us. Water is life and our awareness of this precious element is growing daily. With the work of Masaru Emoto we are now able to see the power of our thoughts, words and actions on water. A simple prayer of gratitude for the water we use can truly transform the world. facebook.com/csh.eire

Feng Shui Flow Home is where the flow is. By Edel Cleary

What I have found, in the past 18 years of studying and working with feng shui, is that it is deeper, more profound, and yet simpler, than any one explanation can encompass. The energy we surround ourselves with, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, how we internalise this and reflect it back into our world is a process as simple and vital as breathing. Feng shui provides us with a system through which we can analyse what it is about our homes that is working for us and what might be impeding our progress. Feng shui is about dynamic balance, not static perfection. The energy in every area of our lives ebbs and flows, exactly as it does in nature and that’s just how it should be! It’s a process of germination, birth, growth, blossoming, shedding and dying back. If we were to live in static perfection there would be no growth. Feng shui provides us with a prism through which we can gain clarity on our place in this process so that we can relax and go with the flow while still having a firm hand on the rudder. Not floating aimlessly, but moving gently forward, easily and effortlessly on our journey through life. The most important thing to remember is to surround yourself with what you love. Go through your space regularly and weed out anything that is no longer ‘you’, ensuring each element feels uplifting and joyful along the way. fengshuidesign.ie

Many of us find ourselves looking for a space for quiet and time to relax and for thousands of years, people have claimed that pyramids generate fields that produce a very relaxing environment. This was the inspiration behind the Zenamid; a meditating pyramid conceived by some Irish people with a passion for design and natural energy. “The Zenamid was designed by an experienced group including a product designer with over 20 years experience and a long history in yoga, energy work and bringing products to life. We recognise the human desire for relaxation and the great effects provided by meditation pyramids.” But generally, meditating pyramids are very large and therefore quite impractical for most homes so they created a solution that can be set up in a minute and used easily anywhere. Hundreds of people have tried it and many noted that they loved the feeling of peace, support and comfort it provides. “As a long time meditator and Martial Artist I found as soon as you start to use the Zenamid the expansion of Consciousness is immediately evident. It allows the user to go deep into Meditation quickly and the opening and balancing of the Energy centres happens by just sitting in the Zenamid,” says Alan Kane. If you are a seasoned meditator, the creators promise that meditating in a Zenamid will enhance your practice and bring you to the next level. For others it can offer ways to connect more deeply with your partner, improve your energy work, aid in preparing for sports and compliments other techniques including crystals and sound. zenamid.com

The Institute of Biomagnetic Therapy, which has four practitioners in Ireland, uses a method created by Dr. Isaac Goiz Juarez in Mexico. Due to the benefits reported by numerous clients it has now spread much further afield. The practice uses medium strength magnets to neutralise the parasites, bacteria and viruses which are causing you to become unwell. Along with this, emotional, ancestral and spiritual health and balance are cared for as another important part of the healing and balancing process. Raymond Cadwell, Director of the Institute, and a biomagnetism practitioner, previously worked in organisational psychology, organisational change management consultancy as a coach, mentor and guide and now dedicates his time to healing.

Lindy Gibbon, who had developed fibromyalgia went to the Institute and shared her experience. After her fi rst visit, she felt no change and admits she was disappointed. But a month later, she returned again, this time with a back problem as well as her other symptoms and from that session on, she began to improve. She says her fibromyalgia symptoms cleared entirely. “I have now been pain free for three months with no back pain since my last treatment. My joy has returned and everyone says how much better I look. I am learning to harness my new found energy for my own healing and I feel alive and vibrant again for the first time in two years. I am so grateful for the gift of the healing I was given and highly recommend the approach. They are a very special team with beautiful soul, wisdom and compassion. biomagnetism.ie

By Janine Thorp Within each of us, there is a life force that is longing to be expressed and shared. Some of it we express easily and with joy, and some of it has not yet been realised. We long to be free to follow our deepest desires. When we follow our deepest desires, we can create the life that lights us up and that lights up the world around us. Our sense of self becomes more alive, more vibrant and more whole, and that inspires others to do the same. As we all ignite with our own passion and aliveness, and as we share who we really are, we transform the world around us. So what are your deepest desires, and what might your life look like if you were to follow them? What would change? What would stay the same? What would you be receiving? What would you be sharing? How would you feel? To begin lighting up your life, love and celebrate all the parts of your life that already feel beautiful and fulfi lling. Love and celebrate all the parts that are currently finding their way to self-expression. Love and celebrate those parts that feel unloved or unaccepted, for they too are valuable. It is from these parts that new gifts and abilities can emerge. And most of all love and celebrate all of who you are! janine Thorp is an Intuitive Life Coach, Channel and healer who helps spiritual entrepreneurs and others to activate their gifts, do what they love and live a freedom-based lifestyle. janinethorp.com

Energising Health Pranic Healing’s simple technique. By Colm Scanlon Pranic Healing® is a highly evolved and tested system of energy medicine developed by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui that utilises prana to balance, harmonise and transform the body’s energy processes. Master Choa Kok Sui spent more than 40 years researching and studying esoteric sciences, and the result of this is the Pranic Healing system. The first book, The Ancient Science and Art of Pranic Healing, was published in 1987 and since then has spread to over 126 countries and been published in over 27 languages. Pranic Healing uses a transference of energy to cleanse blockages in the energy system and 11 major chakras before replenishing the affected area with new energy, which in turn creates a chemical reaction for the body to heal using a non touch healing system. Master Choa formulated a system so brilliantly simple that even new students can rapidly learn to heal simple ailments, empowering them to produce immediate, positive results. With the aid of self-healing techniques, you can learn to maintain a positive attitude and clear mind even dealing with difficult situations and people. The Institute of Pranic Healing UK and Ireland has been

established for a number of years and continues to grow and improve under senior Pranic Healer and director Les Flitcroft, a gifted trainer, presenter, and practitioner. Workshops, meditation evenings, courses and free clinics happen weekly throughout Ireland. pranichealinginireland.com

Growing Galway Health Healthy community, healthy people. By Elva Carri Evergreen, a chain of six health food stores in Galway and an online store, was founded by Kieran and Aideen Hurley with their first shop opening in 1992. According to Therese Hyland, the manager of their latest store in Oranmore, their aim was simply to provide foods for special dietary requirements. The business has grown a lot since then, expanding into beauty care, eco-friendly cleaning products, sports nutrition, supplements and more. I asked Therese if she thinks interest in natural and holistic approaches to health has grown and she explained how much more educated and empowered even the customers have become, “Yes absolutely. People are taking a more preventative approach with their health and looking to avoid taking medications if they can help it. There is much more awareness of the impact diet and lifestyle can have on our health and wellbeing.” Staff like to be able to help the customer even more and that ethos is manifested in Evergreen with weekly staff training provided and further study actively encouraged. Creating a

51 positive impact on the communities local to their shops and building great relationships with the people around them is another really important day to day element for them. Therese’s top tip for summer health is to take a good probiotic, “Generally there is a shift in people’s routine and eating habits come summertime and this can disrupt our digestion system and leave us feeling a bit bloated and out of sorts. A good probiotic will help balance the gut flora and protect our immune system.” evergreen.ie

I Could Hear My BodyTalk Synchronising the body’s energy systems. By Elva Carri

John Veltheim, founder of the BodyTalk System, was in Ireland recently to run a weekend of training. I caught up with him to ask him about BodyTalk and had the pleasure of an impromptu treatment. Dr Veltheim is a chiropractor, traditional acupuncturist, philosopher, Reiki Master, lecturer and teacher. Introducing me to the basics of BodyTalk, along with some revelations about microbes and our health, one can quickly see how he came to create a truly holistic approach to health. The way he views our world and our health is clearly as one whole and it’s impressive to see someone able to take in so much information from so many different fields, process it so systematically and then create something that seems incredibly usable from it. He humbly explains he has a lot of help from researchers and that his business partner Esther deserves credit for a lot of the work too. A large part of what BodyTalk aims to do is to serve as a toolbox that brings together the therapies and practices people are already trained in, be they traditional or alternative, and to empower people to use the techniques for their own health, or that of their family and friends. The treatment entailed Dr. Veltheim resting one hand on my stomach to tune in to my body. He was able to list a number of issues and respond to them. I felt nothing

more than some gentle prodding and hearing my organs respond with so many noises was intriguing! It had some very definite instant effects and further positive implications in the days following. bodytalksystem.com

Guardians of the Ocean whALE AnD DoLphIn ESSEnCES. By Erik Pelham We are truly in the New Age now and can plunge in with total joy and abandonment. There has never been a better time in the history of humanity to embrace new ways and new relationships in our lives. The darkness of past times is receding quickly and we are all ready for a real Sea Change – literally! For years, dolphins and whales have been trying to get through to us that we are one with them, and as we care for the land areas of the earth, they look after the oceans. They are just like us – just as evolved, just as intelligent, just as complex and advanced. They have an amazing capacity to support us in many vital ways energetically, which we could do if we had the freedom to swim with the particular cetacean of our choice when we needed it. But mostly we don’t have the freedom to swim with the ones we need to, when we need it. This is where the Dolphin and

My Trip to Hippocrates A tropical transformation in health. By Deirdre McCafferty I treated myself to two full weeks at the Hippocrates Health Institute’s Life Transformation Program in sunny Florida. It was a fantastic experience and probably the closest thing to being in heaven that you can experience while still being firmly planted on this earth. What makes it so heavenly? 1 The location and climate. Fifty acres of tropical nature at its most beautiful - intricate banyan trees, lakes, landscaped pathways, sculptures, song birds, flowers and, most of all, warm sunshine. 2 The food. After your body adjusts to the lack of sugar, alcohol, caffeine, animal products, flour products, and sweet foods, how you feel after two weeks is utterly fantastic - light, youthful, energised, calm, inspired and with clear skin and shining eyes! 3 The informative classes on every aspect of health and healing for mind, body and spirit. 4 The medical aspect. I received a full blood test and a follow up consultation with a medical doctor. Happily I was awarded an A++ for my general health with the exception of a sad face cartoon beside my vitamin D results! 5 The people. I met strong, hope-filled, inspiring people,

A Present of Presence Present moment awareness exercises. By Sarah McLean Sarah McLean is the author of bestseller ‘Soul-Centred: Transform Your Life in 8 Weeks with Meditation’ and the director of the McLean Meditation Institute. “With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.” That was what American author and transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson suggested. Sounds good, living in the now. But how can we keep our focus on the here and now when it’s the mind’s habit to wander? Here are three present moment awareness practices to create a more mindful life: 1 While washing your hands, give your attention to all of your senses. Notice the way you stand, listen to the sound of the water, feel the sensations of the water on your hands, smell the scent of the soap, and notice the way your hands move with the texture of the soap on your hands. 2 While walking up or down a flight of stairs, pay attention to each movement of each step, feel how your body balances and moves, notice your breath, and listen to the sounds your body makes. Be totally present with the activity. 3 Going for a drive? Get into your car and close the door, and before you turn the car on, give yourself a minute to sit in silence. You can close your eyes. Feel your body, feel the flow of your breath. Notice the temperature of the seat, and the air around you. Turn your attention to the one who is having the experience and become aware of your own presence.. Transitions like this are a good time to stop and become more present with yourself and the moment in which you live. mcleanmeditation.com

regardless of the level of what they went there to heal. We shared, laughed and cried together. Physical cleansing does not happen without emotional cleansing. 6 The staff make it feel like you are part of a family and community and I am full of admiration for how ceaselessly they work to bring health to the world. 7 Inspiration and reconfirmation that I am on the right path in my life work in Cornucopia - bringing health through vegan, plant based nutrition. hippocratesinst.org

pythagoras of

the love world patricia Lohan is adding up your love life. By Elva Carri

54

Patricia Lohan has created a formula for attracting a soul mate and I was one of the lucky first participants on the course. Our publisher Paul approached me about it very gently, not wanting to offend my singleness. None taken. A year or so ago I came to the conclusion that single at 30 and not hideous looking, the problem probably is me. No sympathy necessary, I’d rather the problem was me because I can work with that. Whereas if every man I’ve ever met actually is an asshole, well that’s a much bigger problem not just for me but the world in general. Despite this conclusion however, the actual issue remained an unsolved mystery. Enter Patricia. Soulmate Attraction sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But it’s good she put the word ‘formula’ in there because in many ways it’s like being back in Leaving Certificate honours maths except instead of numbers it’s emotions, and instead of equations you don’t understand its practices you don’t understand, but you do anyway because Patricia tells you to and she’s lovely. Despite having made jokes about vision boards in my own life, I even did that. Not only did I do it, I constructed a huge piece of cardboard out of a number of smaller pieces just so I could make the biggest one ever. Go big or go home! I’ve set aside my previous opinion that they are a bit ridiculous because it actually focuses your mind on things you want and by being forced to only use images that “make your heart sing” you end up getting a great amount of joy from it. And joy and focus are two incredibly powerful things

that I am on very much on board with, pun intended. Other parts have been slightly less fun. I think the reason my difficulty with relationships has remained a mystery is that I live in my head and as excellent as that is, it’s only brought me so far. Even having been to counsellors, I’ve never solved or dissolved what I would refer to as residue feelings – stuff left over from experiences that mentally I had fully dealt with and moved on from. The techniques in the course have begun to lift those. Which sounds great, right? And it is, but honestly, six weeks in I feel like I’m emotionally (or Patricia may call it energetically) learning to walk, and that is bloody hard and not glamourous. But then you realise it’s time for your always fun and comforting group call with Patricia and the other participants and the guest speaker that week is calling from her yacht. You glance at the yacht on your own vision board and realise it’s worth the unglamourous learning to walk for the very glamorous yacht at the other end of the tunnel. Have I got a boyfriend now is probably the most important question you have, and rightly so. And the answer officially is no. But I have just had two of the most fun dates with an incredible guy who is so different to anyone I was meeting before the course. The craziest part is that even within the short space of time I’ve known him, so many things that I decided I wanted in a partner during the course have already popped up. And not your generic “nice, honest, kind” stuff, really specific things. I only hope he hasn’t noticed my jaw drop each time because I’ve almost had to leave the room to go “What the?! This is crazy!” As fun as it is, it’s early days so I’m enjoying it but staying open to the idea that my perfect relation-ship could still turn out to be a yacht, though I think Patricia would lovingly and supportively disagree. thesoulmateattractionformula.com
