Beginning here now… 11:11. I keep seeing it on clocks, everywhere, to the point where I’ve begun wondering “Why?” Each time I

see it, it seems to trigger a distant recollection in my mind. Then, in this issue’s Kundalini Yoga article, I saw a quote from yogic master Yogi Bhajan saying that we are entering The Age of Aquarius on 11/11/2011. The Age of Aquarius, from what I have researched, is a time when wisdom will blossom, and self development, self realisation and a number of other ‘self’s will come to the forefront. Power will come back to the individual, and to the people. It seems to me like it’s already underway, and as long as we keep focused on what we want, it will come to pass. So, stay positive, enjoy our Winter edition, the season and all of its holidays, and thanks for reading. See you in 2011. paul congdon, Publisher

The Long News

The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996 to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long-term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today’s “faster/ cheaper” mind set and promote “slower/ better” thinking. They hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years. Some sort of balancing corrective to the short-sightedness is needed - some mechanism or myth which encourages the long view and the taking of longterm responsibility, where ‘long-term’ is measured at least in centuries. Long Now proposes both a mechanism and a myth. It began with an observation and idea by computer scientist Daniel Hillis: “When I was a child, people used to talk about what would happen by the year 02000. For the next thirty years they kept talking about what would happen by

6

the year 02000, and now no one mentions a future date at all. The future has been shrinking by one year per year for my entire life. I think it is time for us to start a long-term project that gets people thinking past the mental barrier of an ever-shortening future. I would like to propose a large (think Stonehenge) mechanical clock, powered by seasonal temperature changes. It ticks once a year, bongs once a century, and the cuckoo comes out every millennium.” Long Now added a “Library” dimension with the realization of the need for content to go along with the long-term context provided by the Clock - a library of the deep future, for the deep future. In a sense,

every library is part of the 10,000-year Library, so Long Now is developing tools (such as the Rosetta Disk, The Long Viewer and the Long Server) that may provide inspiration and utility to the whole community of librarians and archivists. The Long Bets project - whose purpose is improving the quality of longterm thinking by making predictions accountable - is also Libraryrelated. The point is to explore whatever may be helpful for thinking, understanding and acting responsibly over long periods of time. Hence, their website contains news pertaining to our long-term future. www.longnews.org

from other businesses will be locked away safely for the foreseeable future. The important factor is that the concept will work in harmony with nature and big business, making it appealing to both environmental and corporate sectors. It is a growing technology and one that could literally save our atmosphere from billions of tonnes of CO2 emissions.

8-year-olds Save Drowning Man

www.tececo.com.au

Two 8-year-old boys in a young lifeguards training program rescued a man who was struggling in the ocean off Australia’s east coast. Jake Satherley told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio that he and friend Spencer Jeams saw a middle-aged man having trouble off Northcliffe beach, in Queensland state. “We saw him put his hand up and was saying, ‘help, help,’ so we went over to him and pulled him on our board,” Satherley said. The boys are part of the under-14 lifeguard training program at Northcliffe Life Saving Club. Club president David Shields said he’d never seen a rescue like it. “They really did perform well above their years,” he told ABC. “We’re just so proud of them and the way they acted instinctively.” Nearly 50,000 Australian children, ages 5 to 13, are enrolled in junior life saving programs, according to Surf Life Saving Australia. www.northcliffesurfclub.com.au

Heart-Healthy Pocket Friendly Spending more on food isn’t the only way to buy the healthiest diet, new research shows. “Increased spending on nuts, soy and beans, and whole grains, and less spending on red and processed meats and high-fat dairy, may be the best investment

for dietary health,” Dr. Adam M. Bernstein and colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston conclude. The trick, according to the researchers, is to spend more on plant-based foods. “Although spending more money is associated with a healthier diet, large improvements in diet may be achieved without increased spending.”

Building Blocks of the Future One of the answers to one of our most pressing concerns, climate change, may well be in the very fabric of the roads we will walk on in the not too distant future. One of the innovations that inspired researchers was the way that corals absorbed CO2 while being able to put down rigid mineral structures that actually locked up CO2. Soon they realised that by mimicking this process they could produce a concrete mixture that would effectively capture CO2. Potentially, one day, our cities could have the same environmental credentials as our woodlands and forests. Our building blocks will work like plants to soak up atmospheric carbon. The concrete/cement industry will no longer be a primary polluting industry and CO2

Lucky Man In 1999, 13 year old Paudy Byrne started to become worryingly sick. Over the next year, he was diagnosed with depression, but that was just a symptom of the cancer inside him, which wasn’t discovered until he was rushed to hospital one day where he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. In 2003, after a long time recovering in various hospitals, he was finally able to return to his life, which included school. He did his Junior Cert at 18, in a class of 15 year olds, but, he

A minuscule cow with a taste for contemporary music has been named the world’s smallest by the Guinness World Records book. Guinness says the sheep-sized bovine from the West Yorkshire region of northern England measures roughly 33 inches from hind to foot. The 11-year-old cow is named Swallow and her owner, Caroline Ryder, said she would spend Thursday either grazing with her herd or listening to BBC radio in her cowshed. Swallow is a Dexter cow, a breed known for its diminutive stature, but is small even by Dexter standards. She already has nine regular-sized calves and is pregnant with her 10th. says, “the entire school was very supportive” and he stayed on to continue his education. In the Leaving Cert, he got one of the highest marks in the year, and went on to win the “Student of the Year Award” and the “Co. Louth Person of the Year 2006”. Along the way, he joined Canteen Ireland, a nation-wide support group for young people who have or have had cancer, and for their brothers, sisters and friends. “When I went to my fi rst meeting in Carlingford in 2005”, he recalls, “I realised that this wasn’t just a club for sick people, but a family. A family I was being welcomed into with open arms. It was one of the best things I ever did.” He adds, “At present I am pursuing a dream of mine in doing stand up comedy. “I’ve had lots of people who’ve had their whole life changed, and they have no idea that the bars is what did it…”

positive personality

Gary Douglas Interviewed by Dr. Tammy Verlaan-Ross, Access Consciousness Facilitator

“The Bars came about as a result of me being a channel, and having some other being who talked through my body. The being talked about these 32 different points (the Bars), and then I started doing it. It was an amazing gift to suddenly be able to dance better, to be able to move better, to be able to do yoga positions in a heartbeat, to be able to do all these different things because of having these Bars ran. It takes all the limitations out of existence. The great gift about the Bars is that they are like a delete file for your computer bank, that all the garbage you put in begins to get erased. For me, personally, one of the most amazing miracles I ever received was when I was having my Bars ran and

8

I got up off the table and had gone from being pigeon- toed to duck-footed and my toes have never gone back to being pigeon toed ever again. The Chiropractor had said that was two years of work and the Doctors had said it was going to take an operation. That’s kind of a miracle as far as I’m concerned. I’ve seen people such as a guy who was having his Bars ran and his feet kicked up off the table and the next day he was an inch taller and his tipped pelvis had gone straight. Nobody thought he would ever have a straight pelvis. He had been sway-back his whole life and, literally, having his Bars ran changed that. So those are just a few examples of the things the Bars can do. There is the potential for anything to change. I’ve had lots of people who’ve had

their whole life changed, and they have no idea that the Bars is what did it. Their life got better and better and better and they didn’t even know that it had anything to do with the Bars. They just thought it was lying there and doing nothing. It is kind of lying there and doing nothing but it can create some magnificent changes. The Bars are one of the major components of Access Consciousness. One of the major things we don’t know how to do in this reality is to receive. The thing about the Bars is, there is something that requires you to just lie there and receive and most of us have been taught that we need to do or contribute to any activity. It’s like most people can’t even let the Chiropractor lift their leg up without contributing to the motion and trying to make it happen. A whole lot of people that I have worked with, for them, it’s the first time in their life that they have ever received. It’s always about what they have to do for others and give to others and how they have to make something happen. So receiving, itself, is probably one of the most difficult things people have to do. For men, it is one of the hardest things. Men are taught to do for women. They’re taught never to receive. So for men, it’s a major change and usually makes sex more fun among other things. Then, with them learning to receive, it makes it more fun for the women, so the women have more fun too. So, anything becomes possible when you have this place of being willing to receive. You don’t have all the money you want as you are not able to be whatever it requires you to be in order to receive. So, this starts to unlock the places where you can’t have money or you can’t have the relationship you want. I guess that’s a way you can describe it, it eliminates your ‘can’t haves’, so you start to be able to ‘can have.’” You can experience the Bars as a private session or learn the Bars in a one-day workshop. There are a number of Bars Practitioners and Bars Facilitators in Ireland. The Bars is the first core Workshop in Access Consciousness. You can also purchase books by Gary Douglas from the Life and Balance Centre.

exploring your sun sign

part 2 Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn

“Meaning makes a great many things endurable – perhaps everything” – Carl Jung

by Margaret gray MSW D. Psych. Astrology

10

This article continues the exploration of the archetypal characteristics of the Sun signs in the Zodiac. If you missed Aries, Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, feel free to have a look at them online at www.positivelife.ie Writing this article whilst in Hawaii, I spent an afternoon at the Bishop Museum exploring the Hawaiian exhibits. In the main Hall, I noticed a sign that read: “Duality and Balance are fundamental Hawaiian life principles.” In a time when we are particularly challenged worldwide with maintaining economic, ecological and social balance, it reminded me of the value of recognising ourselves in the mirror opposite us. This is one of the gifts of exploring the Zodiac signs as a duality. suN iN GemiNi The Twins. May 22nd – June 21st Rules the Lungs, Arms and Hands PlaNetaRy RuleR Mercury (The Greek God Hermes) Gemini is the fi rst Air sign we encounter as we move developmentally around

the Zodiac. Starting with the initial, fiery, creative spark of Aries, followed by the earthy manifesting ability of Taurus, we arrive at the third sign of the Zodiac, Gemini, which introduces us to the mental realm of ideas and communication. Similar to the mythological twins, Castor and Polux, who could only remain together by agreeing to spend one day in the Underworld and one day in the Olympian Heavens, the Sun in Gemini, on an archetypal level, seeks to integrate the light and shadow within. Siblings are associated with this sign, often playing a major role throughout one’s life. The Sun in Gemini is associated with Hermes, the Roman God of travellers, merchants, magic, languages and athletes. If the Sun in Gemini is unconscious, blocked or disowned, it can behave like the trickster side of Hermes, creating mischief through indulging in careless words and/or actions out of boredom. In finding and owning its own authority within, the Sun in Gemini can use its acute awareness of the interconnectedness

of all, to act as a translator and bridge between worlds and ideas. If your Sun is in Gemini, you are likely to benefit from providing your mind with ample stimulation through access to a wide variety of ideas and education. Communication on all levels nourishes your soul. (oPPosite) suN iN saGittaRius The Archer. Nov 23rd – Dec 22nd Rules the Hips, Thighs, Liver and Gallbladder PlaNetaRy RuleR Jupiter (The Greek God Zeus) Unlike many of the other oppositions, there is an easy, comfortable alliance between the Geminian realm of ideas and the Sagittarian, fiery search for enlightenment. However, similarly to Zeus who was the King of the heavens, the Sun in Sagittarius has a deep awareness that we belong with the Gods, albeit in human form. Hence, we are subject at all times to an internal morality which supersedes human laws, unlike Gemini who does not assign morality to the realm of ideas. Archetypally, the Sun in Sagittarius is concerned with our human need to search for meaning in everything around us. Similarly to the Sun in Gemini, it blossoms with expansive learning and travel. If the Sun in Sagittarius is unconscious, blocked or disowned, it can live a life of endless possibilities, like the Puer Aeternus, never grounding any of them in the concrete material world. In finding and owning its own authority, the Sun in Sagittarius learns how to engage with the complexities, and at times meaninglessness, of the human world, embracing responsibilities whilst retaining its innate freedom and expansiveness. If your Sun is in Sagittarius, you are likely to need a lot of mental and physical freedom and space. Ensuring that you spend regular time in joyful situations, away from the mundane structures and restrictions of daily life, enables you to be at your most creative. integration of the strengths from both signs

Together, these two signs create the philosopher and teacher, challenging our minds and hearts to expand in a joyful, meaningful manner for the betterment of humanity.

suN iN caNceR The Crab. June 21st – July 22nd Rules the Chest and Breasts PlaNetaRy RuleR The Moon Cancer, which is the second Water sign in the Zodiac belongs archetypally to the lunar realm of Mother, which is one of the core archetypes we are all born with. As with all the water signs, when the Sun is in Cancer, its light is required to shine underwater in a preverbal emotional medium, best expressed through the imagination. The Sun in Cancer faces an intrinsic confl ict between the need to manifest and shine its solar light through individuation and the regressive lunar pull to remain whole in the safe, familiar uterine waters of the womb. The Lunar cycles are of fundamental importance to the Sun in Cancer, creating a natural pattern of ebbing and flowing. If the Sun in Cancer is unconscious, blocked or disowned, it can, like Thetis, the mother of Achilles, attempt to live out its creativity through a loved one, engaging its rich emotional nature in manipulation rather than nourishment. In finding and owning its own authority, the Sun in Cancer can be immensely creative and sensitive, with a finely honed ability to tune into and provide nourishment for its own emotions and those of loved ones. If your Sun is in Cancer, you are likely to benefit from creating a sanctuary of inner safety, nurturing and security within yourself where you can retreat to on a regular basis. Spending time near the sea and listening to music is also likely to feed your soul. (oPPosite) suN iN caPRicoRN The Mountain Goat. Dec 22nd – Jan 20th Rules the Bones, Knees and Nails PlaNetaRy RuleR Saturn (The Greek God Cronos) Standing opposite the watery feminine realms of Cancer, the earthy masculine sign of Capricorn requires us to inhabit the physical realm of incarnation and matter. Like the Roman God Cronos, who ruled the golden age on earth, the sun in Capricorn seeks at all times to abide by the laws of nature. Archetypally, the sun in Capricorn is in search of its own inner authority and animus, which it can only find through diligent labour and self responsibility. The Sun in Capricorn usually manifests

tenacity and unending endurance in the face of challenging tasks. If the Sun in Capricorn is unconscious, blocked or disowned, its natural hesitancy can solidify into immovable thoughts and attitudes prompted by insecurity and fear of failure and chaos. In finding and owning its own authority, the Sun in Capricorn, like Cronos, can provide wise, balanced and just leadership. The Sun in Capricorn benefits from setting and achieving goals as well as enjoying its excellent dry sense of humour, which helps overcome its fears. Life becomes definitely lighter with age for this hard working sign.

...it reminded me of the value of recognising ourselves in the mirror opposite us.

integration of the strengths from both signs

Capricorn offers Cancer a solid container and boundary to safely manifest its immense imagination, creativity and emotional richness. Cancer offers Capricorn permission to nurture and nourish itself and others. Together these two signs provide an excellent balance of yin/yang, anima/animus energy. In the next edition, I will explore the remaining four signs: Leo opposite Aquarius and Virgo opposite Pisces. We will also look briefly at the signs of the Zodiac in a circular developmental manner.

“out of this world”

David Kenna Portrait Photographer I have been gifted with a secret power. A power that at one time I never knew existed but, once discovered, is always close to hand. One that can immediately tell me that this or that drama really isn’t that important at all, or that this argument really is about nothing. One that says, “No matter how much you piss me off, I was born to love you more than anything in the world,” and that’s sooo cool. It empowers me to say I know where you’re at, without words. It allows me to be an idiot, to be ten again, to say sorry. This gift allows me to reach out from my soul to someone else’s and give it a little tickle when they are having a shitty day... But the real secret? We all have this gift. Drop a smile in to the frown pool and watch the ripples! www.dakphotography.ie

Matjan Jeuken Wanderer When lights buzz the sky, my world changes. I forget my worries. I am witnessing another possible reality. It rocks my world with excitement, a state of wonder - contemplating the magnificence of a grander reality of intelligence. To my disappointment, this world seems to continue unchanged. Did they not see it? Why don’t they talk about it? Are they even open to the possibility? Indeed, it would rattle science and faith. Yet, that mysterious world continues travelling through space and time, observing a cosmos of life; this world of terrestrials, boxed in, barely able to contemplate the reality of having cosmic brothers and sisters. I believe this planet is being engaged more and more as we enter a time of great transformation. When our Collective consciousness is open enough to this possible reality, perhaps then there will be sightings, landings and communications on a much larger level that cannot be denied.

Orla Phelan Natural Healer As a child, my family thought I suffered from “night terrors.” “You are dreaming,” they would say. To them it seemed impossible that (awake) I could be experiencing anything beyond what they were experiencing. But I was. I was experiencing visitations from other beings who would sing, chant and pitch notes around me. They spoke a language I couldn’t decipher, and they existed in a world like a hologram existing on top of this reality. Since then, I have consciously left my body on many occasions; I have heard sounds from the cosmos, travelled through space; been to other planets where I’ve felt such incredible love, met the head of the fairies, seen the gnomes and elves; the stars have talked to me; my version of God has even appeared. We are created by love. We have been sleeping in an illusion and now we are all waking up. allswellireland@gmail.com

It was one of those effervescent mornings where the sun seemed to find its way into every corner of the world, and the world, adoring this undivided attention, lit up like a jewel in a store front window. The bed was tousled in a way that seduced both dreams and desires as crisp white sheets, feather duvets and soft pillows filled every edge to the brim and overflowing. My lover pulled me into his arms and I sank into his chest and belly as our bodies emerged from deep slumber. I took him in in the mood of the morning, brilliant, strong and full. It was in this moment that I realized that everything had changed. That lovemaking, for me, would never be the same, ever again. For, as he entered me, he entered my whole being. From the moment he touched me there was nothing in me that was not filled by him. It was as if the light around us was now streaming within us from his body into mine. I was flooded by the beauty of this man and something beyond the both of us. The atmosphere between us crackled with electric charge and all my senses were flooded with what could only be described as otherworldly sensation. Our lovemaking entered, simultaneously, into a cellular and cosmic level and it was as if nothing had ever existed but this. I felt the world born within me, within every atom of my being. We loved one another that morning suspended in time. And the beauty of it is just how simple that morning was ... simple and human and tender ... out of this world, and yet, very much a part of it.

Have you ever felt in love with everything and everyone? Have you ever felt like nothing matters and nothing is important except that moment full of joy and happiness? Some people call this unconditional love, or being in a state of awareness, or being enlightened. Whatever people call it, for me this feeling is out of this world! And ironically, this same feeling makes me feel so much in this world. I have experienced this feeling on many occasions in my life, sometimes for a moment, sometimes for a week or a month. Sometimes meeting a person, doing a meditation or looking at a picture of my little 7-month-old nephew brings me to this feeling. I wish you can all find the little and big things in life that make you feel out of this world, and I wish that this feeling soon becomes more and more familiar to all of us!

Andrew Smith Astrologer For several weeks throughout October and early November 1992, I had felt a strong compulsion to head out and look at the stars for the first time and invited my father to join me. We drove to the Rocky Valley in Kilmacanoge and wandered around the hillocks looking at the night sky. We decided to do a small meditation in our car. After several minutes, we heard loud clicking noises surround us, and were bathed in iridescent white light. The noises ebbed and flowed for twenty minutes before disappearing. During the meditation it felt as if I was being pulled out into the stars and was inflated with the idea to study the psychology of the stars. Perplexed, we returned night after night for three weeks to have the same experience, which suddenly stopped in mid-December. During each meditation, I kept getting the same message. The rest is history!

Less is More in Winter Winter is a time where the abundance of nature withdraws into the earth and nature seems asleep to our eyes. According to Traditional Medicine, it is a time to ground oneself, to restore and build kidney chi. Kidney and adrenal energy is our driving energy, where we tap into that core energy that pushes us forward into life. We also hold our flight/ fight response in these organs. Kidneys also eliminate fluids and waste from our body. Our bodies are part of this holistic eco-system. So, how can we align with the seasonal changes, to be ready, with vitality and exuberance for the rising energies of Spring? 1 Rest Do less and take time to just be. Our brain begins to hibernate, producing more melatonin (the sleep hormone). We feel lethargic and lack energy, get to bed earlier in the evenings and extend our time sleeping. This aids physical regeneration. Practice having rest times during the day too. I recommend not watching TV during these designated times. 2 Nourish yourself It can be tempting to eat rich, fatty food to insulate you from the cold. Heavy

twice a week is another wonderful indoor activity, and now with excellent DVDs to choose from, it could become a family fun time!

protein and fat intake is not good and people can gain up to 4 kilos during the holiday months. Eat and juice leafy green vegetables, pumpkins and squashes; these are excellent for internal hydration and nourishment. Including some fats in your daily diet can pacify the rough, dry nature of the Winter’s dominant energy. In Ayurvedic medicine, ghee (clarified butter) is recommended to cook with. Olive oil is another excellent choice, warmed over raw salads. Barley grain in soups and Adzuki bean casseroles strengthen the kidneys. Warming spices in food, such as cayenne, ginger, peppercorn and garlic, are beneficial. Sun Warrior protein powder in smoothies can give inner strength without the unhealthy side affects. 3 Get Physical Physical activity is necessary all year round, so when it becomes cold, warm-up before exercise, and gradually increase the amount of exercise to avoid the cold. Try indoor exercises such as rebounding. 10 – 20 minutes of rebounding 3 days a week is excellent for pumping lymph, toning muscles and building stamina. It is also a safe, gentle, non-impact exercise. Yoga stretches and poses for 45 minutes

4 Stay warm It is important to stay warm in Winter. Layer up clothes, with wools or silk next to the skin. Keep lower back and hips draft free. Brora.co.uk sell ethically produced Scottish cashmeres and other beautiful clothing. Also, while showering in the morning, apply a mix of body moisturizer and oil all over your body. Dr Hauschka Quince Body Moisturizer mixed with Blackthorn Body Oil insulates so well. Overexposure to dry, cold wind damages the skin, so moisturize hands and face with rich natural moisturizers, especially when outdoors. Burt’s Bees products give extra protection from cold weather conditions 5 Retreat This is an ideal time of year to be quiet and to have tranquil, non-seeking and less-doing times. Fears may come up, for releasing and healing, as we introspect. It is a time to hibernate, and to be comfortable with our deeper and darker side for reflection. Be also with the seeding of new thinking for the New Year. There are many ways to retreat and places to go to if needed. Chrysalis retreat centre offers wonderful “Gift to your Self” day retreats in December and “Renewal” weekend retreats in January. 6 Cut out coffee and stimulating drinks Avoid caffeine, soda, alcohol and sugar; all of which do damage to the kidneys and adrenals and are dehydrating and stimulating on the whole body, showing on the face as dark circles under the eyes. Drink warming ginger teas, birch teas and rooibos teas. The Yogi Teas range offer seasonal teas that warm and nourish. I particularly like their Cold Season tea. St Johns Worth teas and tinctures also aid in combating SAD syndrome that can occur due to lack of sunlight. Remember that your quieter, more receptive presence is your beautiful gift this season, for yourself and for those in your life. Season’s Greetings.

The Good Life 2.0 community resilience in a changing world

Surfing the Waves of Change “Wave Riders are curious people possessed of an innate capacity to go with the flow, constantly seizing upon opportunity when others see no possibility, or even disaster. Harrison Owen

by Davie Philip

16

We are truly living in interesting times. It seems to me that we are in the middle of a storm that shows no sign of ending any time soon. To ensure a good quality of life in this context, we will need to adopt new ways of living and working and build our ability to cope in these times of rapid change. With a little ingenuity and collaboration, we could design community systems that will allow us to not only survive but thrive in this changing world.

Change is, and always has been, the only constant. However, the pace of change seems to be speeding up. This can feel overwhelming, but we cannot afford to indulge in despair or be paralysed by fear. We are not helpless; human beings are the most adaptable species on the planet. The present challenges provide an opportunity for refocusing how we want to live together. By nurturing our personal and community resilience we can surf the powerful waves of change with confidence and optimism. With the way the economy, climate and availability of resources has been changing lately, we have little choice but to build our capacity to respond in a creative way. This period of extraordinary global change is an opportunity to ensure that the places we live in are vibrant, innovative and full of life. A resilient community is one that takes action to enhance the personal and collective capacity to cope with the unfolding challenges. Adaptability is at the core of resilience and emerges either in response to, or in anticipation of,

Learning how we can navigate this change and prosper during these turbulent times could be compared to surfing. Waves, like the challenges we face, come in all shapes and sizes, and riding them will require the skills and attitude of a good surfer. Here are some attributes of a wave rider that are vital for a change maker to cultivate: 1 Observation Before paddling out, an experienced surfer will first observe the sea, spending time just sitting on the beach watching where the waves are breaking, the direction of the wind, and identifying where the easiest place to paddle out might be. Similarly with change making and resilience building, we need to begin by observing the challenges we face and understanding their context and the risk they pose. Surfers are constantly scanning the horizon and positioning themselves to catch the best waves. Through observation, competent surfers are able to catch and ride waves that others miss. They always seem to be in the right place at the right time.

a challenge. But where do we start? How do we take the first steps to ensure that we and the places we are living have the ability to get by in times of abrupt change? The basis of a community’s resilience is the quality of the interactions between people in that locality. At the heart of the Transition Towns movement is the building of relationships with our neighbours while working with them on projects of common interest. The Transition process is a way of thinking about community readiness for abrupt change. It started here in Ireland less than five years ago and is taking root throughout the world, with thousands of communities now adopting the model. Transition initiatives and people everywhere are beginning to support their local economy and develop all sorts of sustainability projects. These include local food initiatives, programmes to retrofit homes, exploring community energy systems, initiating local currencies, starting car clubs and establishing social enterprises.

2 Preparation Good wave riders are well prepared. They have checked the weather charts and know if there will be suitable waves, have the skills and the right board for the conditions and their wet-suit fits snugly. Possessing the right skill-set and having the right tools will be essential in dealing with whatever challenges emerge. The competencies, knowledge, skills and tools needed by effective change makers should be identified and cultivated. 3 Active Learning Learning the basics of wave riding early on helps improve a surfer’s performance and gives them the confidence to attempt to catch bigger and bigger waves. Surfers don’t really practice, they learn in action or by doing. They build their competency and skills through the experience and the enjoyment of surfing itself. This is an important lesson. Using action-research or active-learning methodologies in our work could help us engage in the world while building our knowledge and developing our capacity for change. 4 Presence Wave riders have a capacity to be fully present and go with the flow. This is a key skill for a change maker to possess. To catch and ride waves, it is critical for a

surfer to be focused, and being totally in the moment is essential whether you are riding waves or making change. 5 Balance The wave is not static. It changes in relation to internal and external factors. To maintain balance, the surfer has to be constantly shifting his weight and adjusting his stance. This flexibility and sense of balance ensures we have the ability to respond to the various difficulties that confront us. 6 Letting Go of Control When a surfer catches a wave and accelerates down its face, he may seem to be in control but he knows he is not in charge of the wave. Aligning himself with the wave’s force and power allows him to maximise his ride. The surfer is sensing and going where the wave suggests, moving and flowing with effortless engagement, not controlling the wave. 7 Fearlessness Surfers have a ‘go-for-it’ attitude and take the potential of disaster as an opportunity to further master their art. A surfer is not fearful of making mistakes; even falling off the board or ‘wiping out’ is an important part of the learning. 8 Enthusiasm Wave riders have a genuine passion for the art of surfing. It is a way of life for them. A good change maker needs to respond to every situation with creativity and enthusiasm. Although the ride ahead will be challenging, enthusiasm rooted in action will help get us through. We all need to be better at resilience building, and the abilities of the surfer may hold a key to managing change. The secret of a wave rider is a deep awareness of natural systems and the skills and tools to deal with unpredictability. He goes with the flow and has the ability to adapt and change effortlessly. Although we don’t know what the future holds, we can map out some likely scenarios, develop the necessary attributes and build our resilience to prosper in a changing world. Go for it! Davie Philip runs the Community Resilience programme at Cultivate, is a resident in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage and is the coordinator of the Irish Transition Towns Network. davie@cultivate.ie

positive power

coming home to you the best trip you could take this winter

18 When I was 16, I had a boyfriend who couldn’t relax in company unless he was drunk. Some 30 years later, my clients are telling the same story and little seems to have changed. Clara, a 26-year-old language student, had given up on ever having a healthy, loving relationship. “We’re all crippled by low self-esteem,” she told me. “It’s been drummed into us by the Church that we’re useless and unlovable, and none of us have a clue how to relate in a healthy, loving way.” Despite her awareness of the problem, Clara was taking antidepressants, sleeping pills and antacids. She was managing her pain but it hadn’t gone away—and neither had the message that her body was trying to transmit. When we try to blot out our painful perceptions of self, we deny the deeper parts of us that are yearning to be expressed. Our bodies always support us in our personal evolution, and if we lose our way, they generate symptoms designed to put us back in touch with the truth. For Clara, choosing to listen to her body was a turning point in her life. When she realised that her depression was caused by a deep sense of unworthiness, that her insomnia was caused by shame around her sexuality, and that her heartburn was caused by a knot of anxiety in her stomach, she finally allowed herself to start processing the backlog of emotions. When she understood that her body had been trying to guide her

“Taking responsibility for our bodies… is the most powerful thing we can do to create our ideal life”

towards the happiness she craved, she learned how to interpret its messages and follow its cues. She started to live life on her own terms. No more late-night drinking with friends just to ‘fit in’; no more compromises in relationships in the hope of being loved; and no more pushing aside her feelings in favour of what others wanted. Taking responsibility for our bodies—as well as our beliefs, emotions and choices—is the most powerful thing we can do to create our ideal life, yet we’ve been taught to defer the responsibility to doctors, lawyers, governments and other ‘experts’ because we don’t believe we can fix ourselves. We’ve also been programmed to endure, to suffer and to generally make do, which stops us from standing up for our rights, from saying no to any kind of abuse, or from engaging in healthy rebellion.

But the body rightly rebels when it’s abused or disregarded, and its symptoms are the physical translation of our negative beliefs. It’s our own unique guidance system, telling us what’s best for us and when we’re off track with our true selves. We may not know all the right answers to make it confident and whole, but we can start asking the right questions: »» Am I loving or rejecting myself? Am I doing what’s best for my body and mind? »» What fears and beliefs are holding me back? »» How does my fear, self-doubt, anger, grief, insecurity, resentment, jealousy, rejection, disappointment or defeat prevent me from being fully me? »» Am I ready to change my mind and stop letting others run my life? »» What would I feel if I stopped drinking/ smoking/pill-popping/comfort-eating? If these things are preventing me from being fulfilled and happy, do I really want to keep doing them? »» What can I do to enhance my self-worth and start believing in Me? »» How can I change the negative programming that’s keeping me stuck? »» Am I taking actions that open me up to more love, support and fulfilment? »» What more can I do to nourish and heal my body?

If you’re feeling lonely, broke or unhappy this winter, remember that your body is ready and willing to take you where you want to go. Trust your gut feelings, explore your emotions, and question any belief that doesn’t support you in being the best that you can be. It’s the most important journey you can make... and the destination is you.

positive business

going the

green way

by Felicity Burton-Latimer

Greenway’s shopfront and Laurence (inset)

Opening a new business in the current economic climate would seem to be a bold move for anyone, let alone a teenager fresh out of school. But that’s exactly what Laurence Cole did last year when he was just 19 years old, full of confidence that his shop, The Greenway Emporium, was exactly what the town of Boyle in County Roscommon needed. The shop is entirely built on the premise of Fair Trade and eco-friendly produce – the ‘green’ way. Laurence insisted, right from the start, that everything would be ethically traded and nothing would compromise his belief that wherever the item came from, it should be from a reputable source and the person who made it should be paid a fair price for it. The Fair Trade symbol is everywhere. “We have some wonderful gifts from around the world that are well priced,” explains Laurence, “but we take the trouble to discover the story behind them, who made them and what kind of working environment they have. Eventually, I’d like to go around the world myself to commission hand made crafts, but right now I have to rely on ethical trading through trusted wholesalers.” Local crafts get a look in at the Greenway Emporium, too, with wood, fabric

20

crafts, crochet, felt, ironwork, candles and many other handicrafts produced by local artisans, and there is also a selection of traditional Irish music CDs, alongside health foods, gifts, relaxing music and herbal toiletries.

(there’s a discount available to members of the Vegetarian Society of Ireland), with vegans also well catered for. “We don’t do feathers, leather or bone giftware, and all the food items and toiletries we sell are suitable for vegetarians,” says Laurence. The economy hasn’t hindered Laurence’s shop too much, although he recognises that many people are wary of extravagance. “But people still need to buy gifts for birthdays and anniversaries, so why shouldn’t they choose something ethical? And they still need to wash their hair in natural shampoo and their dishes in ecologically safe detergent. Many people realise how important it is to use eco-friendly products around the home. Even if people don’t want to save the earth, they know all those nasty chemicals in conventional cleaning products are not good for your general health and well being.” Laurence knows his target market – and he’s evangelical in his aim to change the world! “A lot of my customers are already clued up about the environment, but it is very satisfying when I convert someone who usually does all their shopping in the supermarket and only walked into my shop out of curiosity. When they come back to me for Fair Trade coffee and organic tea bags, it’s a very rewarding feeling!” he says. Healing crystals have become a key element of the business, too. “I

“Laurence insisted, right from the start, that everything would be ethically traded” “It has been very satisfying to discover that I’m not the only one who thinks The Greenway Emporium is a great idea,” says Laurence. His family have been right behind him, too, with his parents, David and Louise, and 17 year old sister Rhiannon, taking turns to help as volunteers in the shop, along with his girlfriend, medical student Verity Hill. “Its very much a family affair,” says Laurence. “We all share the same vision, made a tad easier by us already following the green lifestyle.” The family has an organic smallholding growing vegetables and fruit, and Laurence and his sister are life-long vegetarians. He is proud to point out that everything in The Greenway Emporium is suitable for vegetarians

hadn’t realised so many people shared our love of rocks and stones,” smiles Laurence. “We keep more than 140 different types of crystal and run workshops for beginners to introduce them to the astonishing healing properties of these stones.” Laurence Cole is approaching his 21st birthday, while his business completed its first year in October. He still has an unwavering certainty that his shop is the future of responsible retail: small but perfectly formed, bright green and trading with a clear conscience! You can follow the shop online at www.thegreenwayemporium.ie and on Facebook.

Body talk 1 Amatsu By David McCarthy If a light starts flashing in your car to warn that the petrol tank is nearly empty, you wouldn’t cover up the light to try to get rid of the problem. You’d fill up the tank. In the same way, covering up a symptom of a physical problem in the body with drugs or medication doesn’t always treat the cause of the problem. One highly effective alternative for finding the source of a problem and healing the body is Amatsu. Suitable for all ages, from newborns to the elderly, this modern adaptation of a 5,000year-old, holistic Japanese therapy treats the whole body, not just the symptoms. Without using medication, or any invasive manipulation, Amatsu is a gentle realignment therapy which facilitates the body in healing itself. If a client came to me with knee pain, for example, it would be necessary for me to release their foot, knee, pelvis and spine so that they can walk the corrections through and shift back into place. In an hour-long session, I will use Amatsu to work on the whole body, releasing the muscles, bones, ligaments, organs, joints and cranial (head) bones. Amatsu treats a huge variety of ailments and injuries and is best known for benefiting and often completely healing spinal, joint and muscular problems. Many clients who suffer from migraine or IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) also get amazing results. I discovered the benefits amatsu of Amatsu many years ago and

I am still amazed at how well it works. Over the years, all sorts of internal and external injuries have been fixed through this treatment. It can even reveal hidden problems, for example, that a dislocated ankle bone is manifesting itself as deferred pain in the back. Once the ankle is realigned, the back pain disappears. www.amatsu-ireland.com Tel: 0851434299

2 EFT

By Margot Diskin

EFT

“There is no place where EFT won’t go, there is no place where EFT won’t grow.” Eminently simple, gentle and yet powerful, EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a tapping, healing technique that is making its way from our Western culture to some of the most remote corners of the Developing World. I have been very proactive in spreading EFT to Costa Rica a few days after the last major earthquake and to East Africa where I share EFT with some of the poorest communities in the World. I give free sessions and workshops to villagers, AIDS support groups and community projects. In the West, I go very deep with EFT, working with

advanced and innovative techniques, and I treat a lot of cases of depression, anxiety, addictions, etc. In Africa, very simple EFT is enough to empower people to treat their every day aches and pains. EFT is so well adapted to the African situation, given that it requires no drugs, no needles and no written material. We have obtained wonderful results there with people who had been severely traumatized or carrying debilitating physical pain, sometimes for years, and who were able to find freedom from pain and suffering, often in minutes. Whether in the West or in Africa, my main focus is on education; to keep spreading EFT. We have started to train ‘Barefoot’ EFT Practitioners in Tanzania and Kenya. To this end, last summer we brought four practitioners over there that had trained with us in Ireland. It’s only a beginning. Margot Diskin, EFT-Adv, EFT Cert-II is an Advanced EFT Practitioner and Trainer, she is the creator and facilitator of EFT professional training courses and transformational workshops and one of the Founding Members of Uzima, an Irish-Registered Charity whose aim it is to spread sustainable forms of Alternative Medicine to the Developing Word. www.discover-eft.com Tel: 091 529941

3 Anusara Yoga By Mari Kennedy

Yoga transforms our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body. Through the practice of postures, breathwork and meditation, we move bones and muscles, changing habits and stuckness in the body so the life-force, the Shakti, can flow. We learn to turn to the breath, be present and connect with the deepest part of ourselves, our essence that is never changing. In the words of Gurumayi, the function of Hatha Yoga is to “physicalise the qualities of the heart. Yoga, particularly Anusara Yoga, taught me that to really find freedom, we need to cultivate stability and steadiness in our lives. Yoga offered me ways to hold such paradoxes. A tree needs deep roots to spread and express its magnificent bounteous branches. On the mat, we root to rise. We blossom into the fullness of our radiance when we have a consistent practice, a space to stop and pay attention. Yoga showed me how to “be fully at home in the body and its desires, the mind and its ideas and the spirit and its light. Through the practice, I found my sensitivity to know again what is life-giving in my life, and equally importantly, what is not. It transformed deep habits of judgement into playful curiosity. Yoga taught me to tell myself the truth, to radically accept myself and my life circumstances. Yoga showed me how to play with the edges of my comfort zone, how to soften the limited view I held of myself and how to be the best version of myself I can be. My Anusara Yoga practice and teaching continues to offer me all this rich wisdom on a daily basis. So, when I roll my mat up and walk back into my life, filled up with the remembrance that we are all eternal, joyful beings, it demands that I “show up fully responsible and fully, radiantly alive! And that’s a therapy I want to teach and share with the world. Mari is a yoga teacher with classes in Oscailt and Yoga Dublin studios. transformationalspace.com

Waiting in the Sky “There’s a Star Man waiting in the sky. He’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he’d blow our minds.” ~ David Bowie

by Patrick Bridgeman

Astronomers estimate that there are about 100 billion stars in our galaxy, and about 100 billion galaxies in our universe. Dr Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution of Science has estimated that each Sunlike star has on average one “Earth-like” planet. This simple calculation means there would be huge numbers of planets capable of supporting life in our universe. One for every star you see in the night sky. The discovery of planets outside of our solar system has intensified interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life. As of September 2010, Gliese 581 g, fourth planet of the red dwarf star Gliese 581, appears to be the best known example of a possibly “Earth-like” planet outside of our solar system. Studies indicate that the planet is situated near the middle of the habitable zone of its parent star, where temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold. It is 20.5 light-years (1.94×1014 km) from Earth in the constellation of Libra. 1 light-year is 5.8 trillion miles, and the maximum speed of a NASA Space Shuttle is 17,500 miles per hour, so some might argue that visiting (or being visited by any inhabitants of) that planet is out of the question. But, those working in the new scientific field of Hadronic

Mechanics know that ‘faster than the speed of light’ space travel, and even time travel, is possible. So, advanced civilisations should have no problem using this scientific understanding (that we ourselves are now beginning to explore) to visit distant parts of the universe in the blink of an eye. “I’ve made 4 major conclusions after 51 years of study and investigation.” says Stanton Friedman, MSc. “First, the evidence is overwhelming that planet earth is being visited by intelligently controlled extraterrestrial spacecraft. Second, the subject of flying saucers represents a kind of cosmic Watergate. That is to say, some few people within major governments have known since at least 1947 (when at least 2 crashed flying saucers were recovered with alien bodies in New Mexico) that indeed some UFOs are alien spacecraft. The third conclusion is that none of the arguments made against the first two stand up under careful scrutiny. They sound great until you look at the data and then all those anti-arguments collapse. And the fourth conclusion is that this is the biggest story of the millennium; visits to planet Earth by alien spacecraft, and the successful cover-up

“I know of at least 60 different kinds of extraterrestrial beings that have visited the people whom i work with.” says Regression Therapist, Barbara Lamb

of the best data (bodies and wreckage) for 62 years.” There is such an effort to discount what many people are still not ready to believe. “Most of the information that is out in the public on this issue has been a carnival of silliness, and that keeps most serious people sort of in the closet on it.” says Stephen Greer. “The truth of it is actually more interesting. These extraterrestrial technologies are so advanced that they interface directly with coherent thought, with conscious mind. The development of the artificial intelligence that is built into these spacecraft is fascinating. It is so advanced that it picks up on a directed thought. This is what we’ve been experimenting with; and the whole paradigm becomes a new paradigm of understanding the structure of the cosmos.” It has been said that these extraterrestrial beings have been watching over us since the beginning of human civilisation, and that they are here to take care of the planet. “I know of at least 60 different kinds of extraterrestrial beings that have visited the people whom I work with.” says Regression Therapist, Barbara Lamb. “Some beings come to be mentors

to their humans, and the beings seem to work with the person for that person’s lifetime.” So, if these visitors are here to help, why don’t they reveal themselves to us all at once, and why don’t those humans in seats of power (who know about what is going on) tell us what they know? Well, I think the human answer has to do with the ego and its need to be in control. But the most interesting idea that I’ve come across as to why these extraterrestrial beings (who seem to be able to go wherever they like and do whatever they choose) haven’t yet revealed themselves to the world at large, is that there is an Embargo on Planet Earth. They are light years ahead of us, not just in distance, but in technology and seemingly in behaviour as well. However, we are making that journey ourselves,

taking steps towards a wiser world, and like a parent encouraging a child to walk, they want to let us do as much of it by ourselves as possible. It has also been said that there is an end date to this embargo. Would it surprise you to know that the end date is the year 2012? So, what will life at the end of the embargo be like? We will all know that we are not alone in the universe. Our science and technology will blossom like a long awaited Spring. Medicine will heal without causing any harm. Education will evolve and History will be rewritten. We can explore the outer and inner dimensions of the universe with well-travelled guides. All of our wildest dreams may come true. There may be some who find it hard to let go of their status as the leaders of the old world, but the old world will be gone and those who cling to it will not find a place for their separation mentality in the new world. The wonderful Stephen Greer reminds us that a hundred or so years ago, Erwin Schrodinger, who was the father of Quantum Mechanics and Particle Wave Theory, stated that the total number of minds in the universe is 1. And, in fact, the consciousness is a singularity, phasing within all beings. This is at the heart of the compassion of Buddha and the oneness spoken of in spiritual texts and all the religious traditions and Native American traditions. “These visitors understand that,” Greer says “because you cannot travel at multiples of the speed of light without crossing the light barrier, and when you do, you enter into this realm that the mystics used to call the etheric, astral, conscious realm. That understanding is the big test of our civilisation at this time. That universal consciousness and universal understanding is the thing that will truly transform life on the planet and is the next big leap in human development.”

“Is there anybody out there?” crv-remote viewing et & the ufo phenomena By Paul O’Connor

Remote Viewing (an intuitive intelligence technique) comes into its own in situations where information is simply not available by any other means. Individual and organised teams of remote viewers have used their skills to explore anomalous events and sightings, have identified details of other planets in our solar system and other off-world curiosities (which were only confirmed months later when the satellites finally arrived there), and even alleged First Contact meetings with extraterrestrial races. Here on Earth, remote viewers have used remote viewing to confirm, not only the presence of UFO’s, but what they are made of, their propulsion system, how they are controlled and who is flying them. Joe McMoneagle, one of the best viewers in the world, was tasked with an unknown location. He began describing ancient pyramid-like structures in a dry, dusty, hazy environment which contained a number of life forms which appeared dormant or in a form of hibernation. Only later did he discover he had been tasked with a location on Mars! When First Contact occurs between two previously unknown groups, there is always a high possibility of the cultures inadvertently clashing with each other because of some minor breach of cultural norms or etiquette. To avoid this happening here on Earth, the military produce Day Books; a term used to describe briefing documents which are given to personnel before they travel abroad on a posting to another country. Lyn Buchanan’s company, P>S>I Inc., were approached by a private client who tasked them with searching for our nearest neighbours, and producing Day Books on each of their cultures which could be used to reduce the risk of offending them during a First Contact meeting. This ongoing project has found a number of races on habitable planets in close

“Remote viewing shows us that we are more than our physical body; we have exceptional abilities within us that have lain dormant…” proximity to Earth, with cultural norms very different to ours. However, it would appear that not all of the ‘lights in the skies’ are ‘theirs’. During one training class, Lyn took a group of students up to the high desert above White Sands to gather turquoise. As they were searching the area, they heard a hissing sound. Thinking it Paul O’Connor, Director and Project Manager at PSI: Pure Stream Information, is a professional CRV-Remote Viewer, CRV Trainer and international speaker; trained by ex-US military remote viewer, Lyn Buchanan. For details of upcoming CRVRemote Viewing trainings, contact Paul at oconnor@iol.ie or at 0878149663.

was a rattle snake, everyone froze. Lyn quickly realised that the sound was moving and travelling up the valley towards them. He said, “that sound passed directly over us, at less than ten feet above our heads. The weird thing was, there was nothing there. It was completely invisible, with no down draft or back draft. I was so annoyed because I could have picked up a rock and thrown it at that thing!” Later, Lyn set the event as an unknown target for some of his professional remote viewers. They came back with information about ‘a craft moving very slowly close to the ground, with two men in military uniforms laughing, and another group of six or seven people standing around in an open area looking very confused’. As Lyn said later, “I knew we had anti-gravity. I didn’t realise we had perfected the cloaking.” The use of remote viewing as an information gathering tool is openly accepted in exopolitics. One researcher, Steven Greer said about remote viewing: “It’s not a belief system. It is science; it is physics, pure and simple. Humans have abilities to access levels of consciousness generally only spoken about by mystics and shamans.” Another researcher has stated that “Remote Viewing IS the scientific breakthrough that has made replicable exopolitical research into the Universe possible.” Remote viewing shows us that we are more than our physical body; we have exceptional abilities within us that have lain dormant but, with proper training and practice, can open doors to innovation and creativity that we never even knew were there! It is a very valuable tool; one we need to develop and share. In memoriam Betty Meyler, President of the UFO Society of Ireland who died peacefully on 24th October, 2010.

Kundaliniyoga in the dawn of the aquarian age By Jai Kartar Kaur Mohan I remember listening to the song ‘The Age of Aquarius’ on the radio when I was a little girl growing up in California. It spoke of wondrous things, of a time ‘when love would steer the stars.’ Little did I realize the impact the transition into the Aquarian Age would have on my life and spiritual evolution. We are living in unprecedented times, big change is in the air and many of us are experiencing it on a personal level. ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ can describe the upheaval that our families, societies and planet are experiencing as we approach the Aquarian Age. For many of us, it is clear that we cannot continue to live within the confines of our old stream of consciousness. The impractical and removed approach to our environment and spiritual awareness has left many of us feeling that we are powerless and unsure of who to trust. It is time for us to empower ourselves through experience, and to learn to listen to our hearts as well as our minds. It is a time to bow to the teacher within us. When Yogi Bhajan, master of Kundalini Yoga, spoke of the Aquarian Age, he indicated that individual spiritual awakening would occur en masse. Although it would not be an organized global occurrence, Divine consciousness would guide us, as members of the human race, to a more self aware state. An era of spiritual clarity, stewardship of the earth and humanitarianism will blossom.

29

Yogi Bhajan stated, “We are entering the Age of Aquarius on November 11, 2011. It will be a new time. The entire psyche is changing. You must purify the mind, body and soul to be real, innocent and sattvic (pure). Elevate yourself to be angelic. This age, which you will serve, is an age of awareness and experience.” He also told us that, now, more than ever before, we will need to maintain ourselves through a regular Kundalini Yogic practice. We must make ourselves resilient in order to meet the pressure of the times. Kundalini Yoga provides the tools to handle these changes and helps us to become guiding lights for others, as they, too, meet the challenges of entering the Aquarian Age. The technology of Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, offers the practitioner an effective method of, as Carl Jung described it, “psychic hygiene”. Although Kundalini Yoga practitioners come from various faiths, persuasions and cultures, they share a common vision: the reclamation of spiritual values through personal development, community service and universal consciousness. How do we balance and purify ourselves? How do we experience our divinity when in physical form? Kundalini Yoga uses time honoured practices to create energetic balance in the practitioner. It integrates all branches of the yogic discipline, combining kriyas (physical exercises), pranayama (controlled breathing

techniques), meditation and mantra (chanting), resulting in an extremely powerful and transformational experience. This elevation of consciousness stays with us as we move from the yoga mat into our daily lives. A regular Kundalini Yoga practice benefits the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system and improves immune function. As a Kundalini Yoga teacher, I have seen a change in my classes in recent years. In the past, many practitioners were coming to my classes to increase their strength and flexibility and to deal with the stresses of daily life. Although these are still noteworthy needs that students have, more practitioners are coming to Kundalini Yoga to nurture their souls. Many students have expressed their desire to deepen their self awareness and tune into their higher purpose. Others have found the communal aspect of yogic practice and lifestyle inspirational and truly rewarding. As an immigrant to Ireland and a yoga teacher that has taught elsewhere on the planet, I experience a very special, heart centred consciousness in Ireland. Kundalini Yoga resonates with it and has been received with open arms. The number of Kundalini Yoga teachers and practitioners in Ireland is significantly increasing each year. There is such an interest in Kundalini Yoga in Ireland that internationally acclaimed master teachers and sacred music artists are coming to Ireland to meet the request. The vibration of the emerald isle is being elevated by every ‘Sat Nam’ that is chanted in a Kundalini Yoga class. Sat Nam - may truth be your name - as we embrace the promise of the Aquarian Age. the Eye the window to your Personality

By Neil McNulty (Herbalist, Naturopath, Iridologist CNM lecturer) It is by no accident or coincidence that the word ‘iris’ (the coloured part of the eye) is derived from the Greek word iridos, which means the female messenger of the Gods, and is represented by the rainbow. Classical and behavioural iridology (the study of the iris) is a young science, but of all the parts of our bodies, it is the eyes that have fascinated, intrigued and haunted people since time immemorial. The eyes have inspired poets, paupers and pharaohs alike, and our language is imbued with sayings such as: the windows of the soul; smiling eyes; eye of the beholder; apple of my eye; seeing eye to eye. Iridology reveals the secrets of who we are and how our underlying behaviours drive us so that we can better utilize our innate gifts and get what we want from our lives. Normally, magnification is required to view the iris, but, to start you on your path of discovery,

30

individuals, when at peace, bring peace, harmony and balance wherever they go. Others notice their stillness and strength and listen.

there are four rings that are discernible by the naked eye: the ring of harmony; the ring of purpose; the rings of freedom; and the ring of determination. Can you detect any of the following in your iris? 1 The Ring of Harmony The Ring of Harmony manifests like little clouds (white, yellow or gold colour), puffs or dots near the edge of the Iris. These individuals seek harmony in all aspects of their life: relationships, home and work. It is vital that there is happiness, peace and balance around them. They are very sensitive to the slightest imbalance, and being out of balance can leave them disconnected, frustrated, evasive, obsessive and critical. When they understand that harmony within is what they seek, they become mediators, diplomats, interior decorators and landscape gardeners. They do this by being still, through meditation, regular cleansing (skin brushing), being in nature and seeing within nature a place of connectedness where all things vibrate in harmony with each other. These

2 The Ring of Purpose The Ring of Purpose can be recognised as a dark ring around the outside of the Iris where it meets the white of the eye. It can be seen clearly with the naked eye. The thicker the ring, the more significant the behaviour. These individuals seek purpose in their lives in the belief that they are here for a special cosmic reason. They feel like the stars ordained their life mission personally. If you consider yourself a course junkie, then you probably have the Ring of Purpose. When out of balance, they become impatient, confused and uncertain, moving from one guru to the next (greater) guru. When they understand that their life is already full of purpose and meaning, they emerge as aspirational individuals with more patience and clarity of vision. To do this, they should seek to manifest physically what they have undoubtedly gained from a lifetime of acquiring knowledge and experience. Making real what they have in their heart and mind will help them feel whole, connected and focused. 3 The Rings of Freedom The Rings of Freedom are distinguished from the other rings as often appearing in multiples. These can be seen like circular rings or tree rings normally two thirds the way from the pupil to the edge of the Iris. These individuals seek freedom from their physical body, in which they may feel confined. These feelings cause excess tension. When out of balance, these individuals feel restless, anxious and defensive. If they can give up their limiting beliefs, thoughts and fears, the freedom they seek is theirs and is glorious. They become serene, relaxed and confident (in

“There are more things to be seen in the eye than are dreamt up in your philosophy.”

their own skin). To get this freedom, they need to trust the process of getting what they need. These people put getting a massage to the bottom of their to-do list. When they eventually get one, the relief they feel is incredible and leaves them in a state of ecstasy – wondering why they waited so long. 4 The Ring of Determination The Ring of Determination is a whiteish ring or arc around the outer edge of the Iris – it never goes all the way to the white of the eye. This is normally seen in people of 50 years and over. These individuals have a great determination to seek perfection in their life. When they take on a task, it

will be done right. Do you recognise the phrase, “I need to do it or it won’t be done correctly.”? Well, you might have this ring. Out of balance, these people may become rigid, obstinate and bitter, and that can show in the body as high cholesterol. When these individuals learn to be flexible and allow others to help, they become idealistic, determined and yet forgiving (of others and themselves). Having a good talk and expressing their concerns around life can help a lot. A good holiday where they can truly switch off is the best thing for these people. “Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary rule – the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All manner of things

occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.” (Goethe) You may have more than one of these rings. So why not take a look in the mirror and see if one or more of these rings are waiting to be discovered. Do not limit your reality and life by how you behave, think, feel or believe; these do not define you, but understanding their role in your life will help you unlock your potential to be who you want to be.

the wonder of

By Hans Wieland

Wheatgrass What is in an ounce ‘shot’ of Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass juice is fast becoming the most popular “new” health drink. We have been using wheatgrass at home for the past 10 years and were amazed, when we visited Australia a few years back, that ‘down under’ people consume wheatgrass shots like the Italians drink espressos or Irish people have their cuppa tea. Over the last 2 to 3 years, wheatgrass has become more readily available, with Irish companies producing for farmers markets and supplying Health food stores and coffee shops. Ann Wigmore, founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute, first applied Wheatgrass to human health over 50 years ago, for “Fresh wheatgrass juice is an ideal food for anyone who wishes to prevent illness and improve his or her health,” as she pointed out in “The Wheatgrass Book”. The Health Benefits of Wheatgrass Wheatgrass is highly alkaline and gluten free and the fresh juice of young wheat plants is a storehouse of natural vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, enzymes and life energy. You can grow your own wheatgrass or buy dried wheatgrass or wheatgrass juice in powder and tablet form and, as I just discovered at the Rude Health Show, in the form of readymade liquid shots. Wheatgrass can help you restore a high energy level in two ways: “First, by fulfilling nutritional deficiencies, and second, by removing wastes that clog your cells, blood, tissues and organs.” (Ann Wigmore). Wheatgrass contains up to 70% chlorophyll, the “blood” of plants, which is related to human blood. Studies have shown that chlorophyll can increase our red blood cell count, which means better circulation and oxygenation to the cells, and rapid body cleansing.

»» 103 vitamins, minerals and amino acids, including the anti aging Lysine and the brain stimulating Serine. »» High amounts of Vitamin A, C, E, K and B-complex. »» High amounts of chlorophyll: The greener the plant, the greater the amount of chlorophyll. »» As much nutritional value as in approximately a kilo of fresh green vegetables. »» Protein. »» Digestive enzymes in high concentration and the antioxidant enzyme SOD which protects healthy cells from destructive “free radicals”. »» In addition, it has exceptional anti-inflammatory properties and helps with arthritis and inflammatory conditions in general with no side effects or toxicity.

You do need a Juicer! The basic equipment to produce your own wheatgrass shots is a sprouting jar, a supply of hard plastic trays available from garden centres, seed compost as planting medium and a juicer which separates the juice from the pulp. You can buy a hand operated juicer or an electrical juicer. You get 7 to 8 ounces of wheatgrass juice (depending on the length of the grass and its moisture content) from one tray. Dosage: Fresh juice – one to two ounces at any one time. Powder from dehydrated juice – one rounded teaspoon in a half glass of water. Powder from whole wheatgrass – one heaped tablespoon in water. www.theorganiccentre.ie

33 The 7 steps of how to grow your own Wheatgrass 1 Soak wheat grain overnight in purified water, then rinse and drain. 2 Sprout the grain for 1-2 days (rinsing and draining twice a day) until the tails on the sprouts

are about a quarter inch long. 3 Spread 5-6 cups of seed compost in an 11 by 17 inch plastic tray and distribute the sprouted

wheat grain evenly over the soil. Moisten the seeds and the compost evenly (do not over water!). 4 Place another tray inverted on top of the first tray and set aside for 2-3 days. When the grass has pushed up the covering tray, remove it. 5 Put the grass in indirect sunlight and water daily. 6 Your grass will mature in 8-10 days, when it has grown to about 6 inches and the blades begin to split near the bottom. To harvest, cut the grass close to the roots with a scissors. 7 Ideally, juice soon after harvesting. The cut wheatgrass can also be stored in a plastic bag in the fridge for a few days. Top Tip: Good air circulation will prevent 90% of mould problems. You can use a small fan to provide additional ventilation

positive food

Spirulina ancient superfood for modern times By Marcus Rohrer

When you see Spirulina for the fi rst time, it is hard to believe that this tiny, spiralshaped micro-algae is one of the richest and most complete sources of nutrition in the world. Spirulina (the Latin word for ‘little spiral’), a primeval cyano-bacteria, has been growing on earth for 3.5 billion years, millions of years before the first plant life appeared. It grows naturally in only a few alkaline lakes in Africa and Mexico. Centuries ago, the Aztecs in ancient Mexico were aware of the healing and energising properties of Spirulina. Using fine-meshed nets, they skimmed the green ‘scum’ from Lake Texcoco and used it as a source of protein and vitamins. This ‘power food’ increased their stamina and resistance. The latest research shows that Spirulina contains over 100 nutrients: this little spiral is packed full of

35

vitamins, minerals and trace-elements, powerful antioxidants such as chlorophyll, phycocyanin, carotenoids and enzymes, and contains 3 times more protein than meat – all in perfect harmony and synergy. Unlike plants, Spirulina has no hard cellulose cell wall, so all nutrients are easily digested and absorbed. It’s like an ingenious microchip: containing an incredible density of essential nutrients, but completely natural and 100% edible. In the early 80’s, I accidentally encountered Spirulina. It was a kind of love at fi rst sight. I was immediately captivated and impressed. In my excitement, I set up a small business to import Spirulina from Mexico. Driven by perfectionism, I continued searching for the highest quality product, a journey that led me to the sun-drenched Island of Hawaii. One of the world’s best species of Spirulina grows there, in shallow ponds directly alongside the Pacific Ocean, utilising a unique blend of fresh water

from rainforest aquifers and clean deep sea water pumped up from 600m. Soon, I discovered that the abundance of nutrients is only part of Spirulina’s overall potential. There was something else that had been virtually ignored up until then: fresh Spirulina is an enormous reservoir of captured sun energy! Scientific research shows that this captured sun energy, also called ‘biophotons’, is of great importance to our well-being and health. Biophotons regulate and harmonize all life processes in our body. Realising that this subtle sun energy, and precious antioxidants, were quickly lost in conventional packaging like brown glass or plastic containers, I developed a unique, patented, packaging concept - ViosolTM glass - to preserve the original power of Spirulina. This violet glass blocks out the visible light and creates a high-energy environment inside. Spirulina works on 3 levels: detoxifying, restoring and fortifying. It promotes the body’s detox processes, compensates for nutritional deficiencies and improves our immune system. It helps people to recover more quickly after a busy working day, illness, surgery or chemotherapy. During wintertime, it helps us to have better resistance to colds and flu; and women can use it as a natural support during menstruation and menopause, and during pregnancy. Since its re-discovery in the 70s, about 400 scientific studies have been done with Spirulina or extracts of the algae: in-vitro and in-vivo, both animal research as well as human double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Medical research shows that Spirulina stimulates our immune system, increases resistance and can offer natural protection against virus infections. It has also been shown that Spirulina helps to improve blood quality.

Marcus Rohrer SpirulinaTM is grown in pristine conditions in the sunshine island of Hawaii where, given the optimum cultivation environment, they produce pure, fresh Spirulina, and with their ViosolTM glass packaging, they “lock” the sunshine into every bottle. Spirulina, the magic food of the ancient Aztecs, which lay forgotten for centuries in a few alkaline lakes, now provides complete synergy to support our busy 21st century lives. www.spirulina-mr.com

positive food cup of blueberries will provide 9,697 units. You would need to eat 11 bananas to get the same benefit as a cupful of blueberries! Turmeric and mustard are also excellent antioxidants.

growing young with antioxidants There is promising new evidence that you can slow down ageing in just about every system of your body. You actually have the choice – to by Patrick Holford age ‘old’ or age ‘young’ – and as you’ll see, you don’t have to turn your life upside down to do it. What makes us age? The entire process of ageing, from your first wrinkle to worsening eyesight, depends on oxidation. Put simply, we run on oxygen. We make energy by combusting carbohydrate with oxygen. The net result is our own exhaust fumes called ‘free oxidising radicals’, sometimes called oxidants or free radicals. Anything burned, whether it’s a piece of bacon or the fuel in your car, creates these harmful by-products. These literally age you by damaging cells. The average cell has millions of tiny ‘scars’ caused by oxidation. As a consequence, your body and brain gradually work less and less well and look less and less youthful. But you can dramatically

36

slow down the process by upping your intake of antioxidant nutrients. These are plentiful in certain fruits and vegetables. Most people are aware that they should be eating at least five portions of fruits and vegetables daily. The World Health Organisation takes this one step further and recommends eight to ten servings daily, particularly in relation to cancer prevention. This is consistent with the results of our 100% Health Survey. Measuring food’s antioxidant power It’s important to realise that not all fruit and veg packs the same antiageing punch. The best method of assessing the antioxidant power of a food is to measure its ORAC (oxygen radical absorbency capacity) potential. This is an objective measure of how good a food is at dealing with the oxidant ‘exhaust fumes’ of life. The oldest living people consume at least 6,000 ORACs a day. But what does this mean for your daily diet? Generally speaking, where you find the most colour and flavour you will also find the highest antioxidant levels. The reds, yellows and oranges of tomatoes and carrots, for example, are caused by the presence of beta carotene. Artichoke has the highest rating of all the vegetables. Fruits that have the highest levels are those with the deepest colour, such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. These are particularly rich in powerful antioxidants called anthocyanadins. One

The cherry on the top One of the simplest and easiest ways to achieve 6,000 ORACs is to have a daily shot of a montmorency cherry concentrate called Cherry Active, diluted with water. This measures 8,260 on the ORAC scale, which is the equivalent of around 23 portions of regular fruit and vegetables! Chocolate is very rich in two antiageing antioxidant flavonoids called gallic acid and epicatechin. In fact, chocolate contains roughly twice as much as red wine and four times as much as green tea. However, it must be dark chocolate. Resveratrol – The French Secret The ‘French paradox’ has led to the discovery of one of the most potent and interesting antioxidants of all. It’s called resveratrol. Its benefits include improving cardiovascular health, boosting immunity and protecting the brain, as well as having extraordinary effects on extending life. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have shown that resveratrol activates a ‘longevity gene’ in yeast that extends life span by more than 50 per cent! Resveratrol is also found in green vegetables, mulberries, citrus fruit and the skins of peanuts, but is most abundant in red grapes and good quality red wines. When you are exposed to an oxidant, there’s a specific sequence of antioxidant nutrients that ‘disarm’ the oxidant. For fat-based oxidants, for example in chips, the team players are vitamin E (rich in fish and seeds), vitamin C (rich in fruit and vegetables), and glutathione (found in onions and garlic). Each of these antioxidants then have to be ‘reloaded’ to work again, a job done by Co-enzymeQ10 (for vit E), beta-carotene and alpha lipoic acid (for vit C) and anthocyandins and/or resveratrol (found on red/blue foods). I hedge my bets by taking a single antioxidant complex supplement and eating as many of these foods as I can every day. This will add years to your life, and life to your years.

short & sweet 39 Life is a Breeze when you learn to Breathe Less By Martha Roe When your breath is calm, so is your mind. And while that’s easy enough in the sanctuary of a meditation room or the yoga studio, what happens when you’re having a really tough day? Stress and worry play havoc with your breathing and with your thinking. The Buteyko method is a proven systematic approach to

calming your breath – regardless of what is happening around you. Professor Konstantin Buteyko, a Russian physician, developed a way to enable people to reduce their breathing, reversing symptoms such as Asthma, Allergies, Hay Fever, IBS, Eczema, Fatigue, Depression, Emphysema, High/Low

Blood Pressure, Hormonal problems and many more. Even if your health is generally okay, mastering your breath makes life so much easier. At Learn Buteyko, most of our students have been battling severe chronic health issues. We’re here to help transform people’s lives; and as a side effect of their daily Buteyko

practice, they often report that they get on with friends and family better; ward off colds and flu more easily; appreciate their surroundings more; and even crave sugary snacks less.

The Singing Fields of Dublin By Chloe Goodchild the singing field is a field of sound where people of all beliefs can meet to share the universal call for unity and transformation. It is a series of interactive performance-events for a world in crisis, inspired by twenty years research into the use of sound and voice to transform all forms of conflict: from personal suffering to international violence. It creates safe places around the world where people can sing through their differences. In places of conflict and past trauma - from New York to Soweto, Belfast to Baghdad, Columbia to Cambodia - thousands of people will be enabled to access deeper levels of compassion for self and others.

It brings together international, local and indigenous musicians in a celebration to restore self-respect and dignity to the community. It interweaves meditative mantras, love songs and improvisation. (Mantras are ancient words of power drawn from all spiritual traditions that open the heart and restore a quality of equilibrium and calm.) It brings positive and lasting change to the resonance and atmosphere of urban and other landscapes. It enables us to recover our own creative expression so we may communicate without fear. It is a hymn of life that transcends boundaries of creed and culture. www.thenakedvoice.com

has it ever occurred to you that happiness is a choice? It sounds so simple. Well, lucky for us, it is. If you think about it, you will see that it makes perfect sense. Emotions are created by our thoughts. So if we can create anger, fear, sadness, jealousy and boredom with our thoughts, it is completely rational to say that we can also create happiness. Thus, happiness is within our control and is generated from inside us, rather than from what happens externally. There will always be things that happen outside of our control, but how we think about and react to them is completely up to us. Once the decision is made to be happy, we can practise it. Observing the contents of our mind is a powerful exercise to do. Are you accepting the emotions you’re feeling? Often, saying how you feel out loud can be a form of acceptance. This is making peace with your emotion. If you notice self-limiting beliefs, such as “I’m not good enough,” you can create affirmations to counteract this, e.g. “I am good enough” or “I can be good enough.” By choosing to be happy now, you become more conscious of who you are. Happiness is at the core of every being on this planet. Learning to let go of whatever is preventing you from feeling happy is the key. The good news is that anybody can do this, no matter what situation you are in. Choose to be happy, practise and evolve in joy. www.howtobehappy.tv

Meditation for a Calm Heart

(continued from Kundalini article, p.29)

EYES: Either close the eyes or look straight ahead with the eyes 1/10th open. MUDRA: Place the left hand on the centre of the chest at the Heart Centre. The palm is flat against the chest and the fingers are parallel to the ground, pointing to the right. Make Gyan Mudra with the right hand (touch the tip of the index finger with the tip of the thumb). Raise the right hand up to the right side as if giving a pledge. The palm faces forward, the three fingers not in Gyan Mudra point up. The elbow is relaxed near the side with the forearm perpendicular to the ground. Breath: Concentrate on the flow of the breath. Regulate each bit of the breath consciously. Inhale slowly and deeply through both nostrils, then suspend the breath in and raise the chest. Retain it as long as possible, then exhale smoothly, gradually and completely. When the breath is totally out, lock the breath out for as long as possible. Time: Continue this pattern of long, deep breathing for 3-31 minutes. To End: Inhale and exhale strongly 3 times. Relax.

Well Cared For Tom Keily, interviewed by Dr Anthony Sharkey “This time last year, I was at rock bottom. I was approximately 6 stone heavier, depressed, sluggish and craving fast food. I was under financial strain and had turned to eating ‘crap’. I would sit back and watch my kids play, but didn’t have the energy to play with them. I found it very difficult to find the motivation to get out of bed at the weekends. What turned things around was attending Bruce Du Ve at the Welcare Clinic on Merrion Sq. Bruce has a program which isn’t so much aimed at losing weight but at helping his patients attain peak performance in all areas of their lives. I basically gave myself to the program. It was

tough - there was a serious and thorough detox of all my organs, nutritional supplementation and ongoing acupuncture, just for starters! I felt like giving up many times. What kept me going was the ongoing inspiration and encouragement from Bruce. Today, I feel focused and fit. I have the best energy I have ever had in my life. I feel an ongoing sense of gratitude. I’m closer to my kids than ever I was. I have the energy and interest to play with and listen to them. Now, I no longer take anything for granted and I can smile at my past financial worries.” For more info, email Doc.sharkey@gmail.com or call the Welcare clinic on 01 6764640 for a free 15 minute telephone consultation.

By Jason Linton Recipe didn’t go to plan due to some substitution of ingredients. Experimentation ensued and led to the addition of maca, cacao powder, cacao butter, goji and pollen in unknown but carefully observed quantities. Xylitol and agave as sweeteners. Almonds and Hemp protein as binders. Topping: avocado/ cherry moose. More cacao, carob, agave. 500g cherries. (“Oh my Goddess!”) It was a necessity to test the creation at each step along the way. Success! A bitter sweet symphony of flavours. And a birthday treat for a loved friend. Instant side effects: bliss chemicals released in brain, sensations of connectivity, energy in all my cells, enhanced openness and relaxed expression. No doubt, I was high, but in such a grounded way. I observed it all. No toxicity. And the morning after? All I had lingering was this poem:

Mandala Nature By Geoff Fitzpatrick I’ve always liked the notion that the world we experience ‘outside’ is completely interconnected to the state of consciousness we have cultivated ‘inside’. But a while ago I hit a stumbling block. Even though I fully believed in this concept, it was still just a theory for me. I longed to know how exactly do we raise our consciousness? In an age where there are literally 1000’s of meditation techniques and belief systems to choose from I found the whole area baffling. Then I stumbled upon Mandalas, and in all sincerity, my life has never been the same since.

At Home with Homoeopathy By Angie Murphy In Fatima Mansions, truly in the heart of Dublin, Rita Garland and four colleagues currently run a successful clinic offering both free and affordable homeopathic care for residents. On Tuesday evenings, residents in the area can avail of homeopathy, reiki, acupuncture and massage on a drop-in basis. The consultations are subsidised, which means that the practitioners get paid for the first three visits, by the Fatima Heath Initiative. If the patient considers that homeopathy has been helpful to them, all subsequent visits are paid for by the patient at a very affordable rate. “This format has worked quite well for our patients,” says Rita, “because it makes the initial choice of visiting us quite an easy one. It works very well for us also, because by being paid, we don’t feel depleted or devalued.” There are two health rooms specifically allocated for the holistic sessions and, proudly displayed, in one of them is the collection of remedies very kindly donated by Nelson’s Homeopathic Dispensary in Dublin. Fatima Health Initiative has also recently won a Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Award 2010 – this prize acknowledges the high standard of effective communication which is part of the FHI culture. “We work with a flexible and competent team of health workers,” Rita reminds us, “namely Róisín Ryder and Anne Malone. These are the people who promote our work and schedule appointments for us. They are a vital link between the community and the services offered in our centre.”

From the moment I began constructing these geometric shapes, an opening occurred. I began to experience firsthand a new depth to my life. For example, on one occasion I felt a very real presence (nothing spooky now). It was more like the presence you might feel while taking in the view from the top of a mountain on a clear day. Then, gently, I felt a kind of learning occur. It simply highlighted how, up until then, my default settings for being in the world were entirely focused outward... on the external. As this inner lesson continued, I began to listen and surrender

a little more to this presence; imbalances operating in me became exposed and a far vaster experience of reality was revealed. Mandalas work on the principle of ‘like attracts like’. The geometry of the shapes reflect certain states of consciousness. When you create these sacred circles, or meditate upon them, you are tuning into these higher altitudes. By simply ‘being’ in these realms, you acquire, by similitude, the properties held within them. Next workshop: Sat 12th March in Oscailt Mews, Dublin. www.mandalanature.com

ProArgi9+ At the age of 38, Dr. Joe Prendergast learned that his advanced atherosclerosis was that of an 80 year old. Knowing that his condition was not treatable through conventional medicine, he began to do research to save his own life. He became the first known patient to ingest the Amino Acid L-Arginine. After perfecting the L-Arginine therapy, he now has zero plaque in his arteries. Physicians and health care providers are lauding the discovery of L-Arginine and the ProArgi9+ complex as “the most significant heart health care discovery of modern times”. Science Magazine officially declared it, “The Miracle Molecule” in the 1990’s. This molecule creates the gas Nitric Oxide (NO) inside every cell of the human body and is important to the care and feeding of every system of the body. At the High Desert Heart Institute, a study of the ProArgi9+ complex, involving 33 high risk congestive heart failure patients, collected over 7,000 points of data, making it the most comprehensive human trial ever conducted on a nutritional supplement. By the end of the 90 day study, all patients had recovered normal lives and were no longer candidates for heart transplants. Everyone can benefit from “The Miracle Molecule”. www.discoverproargi.com

winter recipes The Art of Conscious Cooking By Joanne Faulkner French Onion and Miso Soup 25g butter 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil 1.5kg onions Herbs 3 or 4 Bay leaves 2 pints miso stock (to taste) - roughly 1 tbsp fresh/paste miso per pint

Onions, obviously, are at the heart of this dish so cut them with love and care, bring out their vulnerable sweetness that makes you cry! Melt the butter and toasted sesame oil (substitute olive oil for butter if on a dairy free diet) and add the onions. Fry on a high heat for a couple of minutes, stirring regularly. Add the bay leaves and herbs, then cover and turn right down. Let them cook and sweat for about 30 minutes. Next, dissolve the miso into boiling water. When the onions are golden and soft, add the miso stock and cook on a low heat for a further 20-30 minutes until the soup has become a rich, nutty brown and the onions melt in the mouth. For me, healthy eating means good food cooked with awareness and love. So, here is a Christmas Spice Cake, perfectly aromatic, sweet and light to comfort the body rather than overload it at this time of year.

Christmas Spice Cake

Food and drink are at the very centre of our being. Whilst some extremely dedicated yogis are able to live without them, the majority of us cannot. In our fast paced modern society, food can become purely functional, eaten on the run or in front of the television. We often have to “remember” to drink water. Yet, contained within all food is the grace of life which, when ingested, transforms and becomes our own. The Art of Conscious Cooking aims to bring us into connection with the grace and energy of all we eat and drink. Linking Traditional Chinese Medicine, the essence of the seasons and the energetic pathways within the body, we connect with food and drink to see how we can use them to support our whole system for balance and wellness. A perfect recipe to nourish, comfort and calm is French Onion and Miso Soup. All the Onion family (including garlic) are great at moving phlegm, keeping things moist and creating internal warmth. The Miso, with its salty taste, is great for the Bladder/Kidney and the onset of winter.

4 free range eggs (separated) plus 2 extra whites 125 ml vegetable oil 125 ml water 2 tbsp runny honey 200g dark muscovado sugar 75g ground almonds

150g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch of salt 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp all-spice ¼ tsp ground cloves

zest of 1 orange 100g caster sugar For the icing: 250g instant royal icing sugar juice of 1 lemon

A lot of ingredients, I know, but a doddle to make. Whisk the yolks and oil, then add the water, honey and muscovado sugar. Gently fold in the almonds, flour, baking powder, bicarb, salt, spices and zest. In another bowl, beat the eggs until soft peaks form and gradually add the caster sugar. Fold the whites into the cake mixture and pour into a greased, deep, 25cm wide cake tin. Bake for 45 minutes in a preheated oven at 180°. Let the cake cool before turning out onto a rack. For the icing, whisk up with lemon juice until thick. Use more water if it’s too thick, or more icing sugar if too runny. Pour over the completely cool cake and enjoy.
