“Nature is the art of God.” - Dante Alighieri Autumn is a beautiful time. I love the colours and the richness in the air. Nature gets to show off a bit and shed some of her skin. I remember standing at Glendalough Lake a few years ago after having experienced a challenging time in my life, and I realised that all that time, the lake had stayed just the way it always is, no matter what was going on around it. Nature does what it does, unaffected by thoughts and fears. That’s why it’s such a healer for us all. So get into it, and bathe in its arms as much as you can this season. We have enjoyed assembling this creative process of a magazine for you and we hope it uplifts you in some way. Enjoy, dear reader, until we meet again next season. Nature is you, you are nature. paul congdon, Publisher

1 Human Connection NURTURING THE ART OF CONVERSATION. by Aisling Cronin

The art of conversation may seem to be fading, but one Barcelona resident is helping to turn the tide. In the words of 26-year-old

“The idea is just to talk freely for a while. There’s a bit of everything.” Adrià Ballester, “it’s often easier to send a message to someone from another country than to say good morning to our neighbours.” He was inspired to change this by setting up the Free Conversations Movement. In front of Barcelona’s Arc de Triomf, he regularly sets up two foldaway chairs, inviting passersby to stop, sit and chat with him in Spanish, English or Catalan about anything they like. “The idea is just to talk freely for a while,” Adrià explains. Adrià confesses that he feels like a therapist at times. “You hear good, positive stories and really tough ones, too. A lot of people will tell you about a tricky episode in their life, maybe

heartbreak or a job loss. There’s a bit of everything,” he says. A 70-year-old Lithuanian woman once spoke with him about the years she spent in a Russian concentration camp. He uses Facebook (Free Conversations Movement) and Instagram (@freeconversations) to promote this extraordinary project, with the consent of those who take part. He posts photos of himself and the people who stop and chat, along with their stories and reflections. When physical distancing measures began in recent months, Adrià decided to take the conversation online. He set up a site called randompenpals.com, which invites users to “get a quarantine PenPal in 10 seconds”. He plans to publish a manifesto very soon, with the aim of spreading his human connection initiative to other major cities around the world.

2 The Friendship Bond A LIFE-CHANGING PACT. by Aisling Cronin

In 1992, two friends living in Wisconsin, USA, settled a deal with a handshake. Neither of them knew it at the time, but that deal would one day transform their lives. Lifelong buddies Tom Cook and Joe Feeney made this promise to one another: if either of them ever won the Powerball lottery, they would share the winnings, regardless of who purchased the ticket. On 10 June 2020, Cook bought a Powerball ticket … and was shocked to learn that he had won the $22 million jackpot. He knew what he had to do. When Feeney picked up the phone and heard the news, he initially refused to believe it. is As an avid fisherman, his first response was “are you jerking my bobber?” However, Cook eventually convinced him of the astonishing truth. Cook and Feeney each received about $5.7 Million, after federal and state taxes were subtracted from the overall amount. Cook handed in his two weeks’ notice at work, then retired when he realised he no longer required a 401-k pension. Feeney was a previous retiree, having worked in the local fire department for many years.

“The power of friendship and a handshake has paid off. I’m thrilled for them.” Neither man has extravagant plans for the winnings, but they are both looking forward to enjoying more travel and time with their families. “We can pursue what we feel comfortable with. I can’t think of a better way to retire,” Feeney remarked. Wisconsin Lottery Director Cindy Polzin added, “Congratulations to Tom, Joe and their families. The power of friendship and a handshake has paid off. I’m thrilled for them. Their lucky day has arrived.”

3 Faith and Family

TWIN PILLARS. by Alison McEvoy

Mission accomplished. Faith lets you cross oceans.” Faith and family ties run deep. At times such as this, when our other links to the world are bearing thin, or downright taken away, we can see those ties all the more clearly. Juan Manuel, an Argentinian living of the Portuguese Island of Porto Santo, when faced with the prospect of a lockdown that would separate him from his family, and his 90 year old father in particular, made a bold decision direct from the heart. He sailed 9,000km

across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in Argentina, after eighty five days at sea. His wine ran out. He was turned away from Cape Verde where he’d hoped to restock his food supply. His fuel ran low and the wind stopped for ten days. His spirits dwindled. Yet, at night, the whole universe lay above his eyes and he started praying. Dolphins turned up to keep him company for a long stretch of the journey and, slowly, faith filled up the space in his weary heart and carried him home;

“Mission accomplished. Faith lets you cross oceans.” The words that he shared after his odyssey carry a certain weight, born as they are from such a perilous adventure. He wants people to know that “Everybody can do whatever they want – if you really want to. If you do it with your heart, it’s even better.... Believe in yourself. Believe in God. Don’t give up.”

8 2 Celebrating Good Humans REACHING BEYOND ‘ME AND MINE’.

by Alison McEvoy

“I continuously marvel at her ability, no, her willingness, to care.”

I always knew my mum was a very special person. Confirmation wasn’t needed, but I got it anyway. About eight months ago, after the birth of my baby boy, I was thrown in the deep end - and she jumped in after me. Every single day she makes her way to us and throws herself into tending, minding, feeding, cleaning and shopping. Never mind that she’s done it all before and that, theoretically at least, these are her harvest days – the days when she should be basking in the sun after the hard work of her life. She loves to take babs out for his evening walk. On these walks she has gotten to know the neighbourhood in a way only the Parish Priest would. She meets mums and babies, older men and women, as she circles about the church lane and picks the hot spots to have a sit in. She listens to the stories, the hardships mainly, of these passers-by. I know she also holds them in her prayers at night. Last week she asked me to buy a gift for the child of a couple she meets. They can only afford second hand clothes for their little one, struggling as they are to pay huge rents. I continuously marvel at her ability, no, her willingness, to care. To think and reach and offer out beyond her circle of ‘me and mine’. She has the eyes of a mystic I believe. Her soul lies in the long grass Rumi talks of, the place “out beyond ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing,’ where “the world is too full to talk about” and “even the phrase each other doesn’t make any sense.”

spirituality & the city ‘WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE WORLD?’ Lili Lapouge I believe we need to remember what it is we have always been craving for, deep within ourselves. For many years, I’ve had a Dream hidden inside of me. In this Dream, I am with a group of fellow humans and we are dancing around a fire, completely free, confident, magnificent, trusting one another completely, becoming one movement, one flow, one sound. What is Humanity’s deepest Dream? How do we make this full-fledged human experience meaningful? The more the world goes in that direction, the more we may realise our highest potential. I appreciate seeing many people around me quitting their jobs, craving more meaningful paths. I am very inspired by the rise of mindfulness practices, restorative justice, non-violent communication and the rediscovery of ancient and shamanic wisdoms. I see dreamers growing and becoming more powerful. I believe everyone is a god-artist in the making. I see clear, free-flowing water, protected animals and ringing cedars. Connect to the Dream.

Aidan Killian I appreciate truth and courage, while a combination of both brings tinkles to my toes. Whether it’s the courage to grow your own food, to meditate, to talk about God to a stranger or simply say ‘no thanks mate, that’s not for me’, it all makes me smile. I envision a world where the wild, free-minded, courageous, free-spirited bardic people of Ireland become the ‘the new norm. We become a beacon of light for a world where truth, love, and freedom becomes as common as the trees we plant. We connect the ancient forests by planting oak, ash and hazel, not for profit but to honour the land. Oh, and people listen more and tell stories. It’s sunny, the school kids work outdoors, there is no debt, everyone has a home, and quality chocolate makes you even sexier. Feel free to hug me and love to you all.

Grainne Tyndall As an International numerologist, 2020 relates to foundations and creating a new blueprint. 2020, when added together, comes to the energy of the number 4, which relates to structure, security, the heart chakra and also the hearth of the home. My vision for the future is a world of safety, where people are free to speak their truth and ultimately to come home to themselves. 2020 has been a time of deep reflection for most of us, and it is also about creating a template for the coming generations. We have been chosen, folks, so if we each take personal responsibility, we create a new way of being. 2020 has attempted to open up our hearts, and now, by creating a new foundational way of love, we will embark on 5th dimensional living. Be the change you want to see. Grainne Tyndall is an International Numerologist, Soul Seer and Broadcaster. numbers4success.com

Enda Donnellan The Buddha once said, “When nothing is certain, anything is possible.” We are living through extraordinary times of change. Great upheaval also brings the possibility to offer a new way. Under normal circumstances, change is slow. However, now we know it’s a must. The native Americans only took actions which healthily considered five generations ahead. As Buckminster Fuller said: “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.” Sovereignty Ireland is a new political party that offers this new model. We feel that this is a unique model to create harmony, starting in Ireland. If we can do it on this little island, then it could be a beacon for global change. We are holding our first public meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin on the 4th of October 2020. Find our ideas and proposition to create a healthy society and reform politics at: sovereignty.ie

Monica Haughey I am appreciating the changes that have happened in the city, with more pedestrian areas and safer cycle paths! More people are sitting outdoors in cafes and the parks, and there are more wildflowers and pollinating areas for bees. On a wider scale, we have been forced to slow down and not be so busy. We have had to look at the choices we are making, to think about whether we really need more “stuff”, and whether we really need to make all those journeys. There is so much opportunity in this for our own health and wellbeing, and that of the planet. My vision for the world is that we now develop and grow further our own inner knowing, wisdom and discernment, as we are being flooded with a lot of conflicting information and views about many important issues. We have the opportunity to become more empowered, be aware of the choices we do have and take charge of our own destiny. monicahaughey.ie facebook.com/femaleentrepreneursindublin

Drew Lawrence On the esoteric level and through the lens of Bhakti-Yoga – the yoga of love and devotion – our highest purpose is to become compassionate and loving toward everyone, including the animals, to learn to love beyond race, colour and creed, to rise to universal love, and ultimately to ascend to love of God. Since my awakening at age nineteen, I have immersed myself in yoga, meditation and Vedanta study. To this end, I learned ancient Sanskrit, studied and practiced Vedic Astrology and used it to counsel people around the world for the past 43 years. I look at spirituality on two levels, primarily — Dharma and Prema. Discovering and following your life purpose while in this lifetime is the path of Dharma. When following Dharma, we act in harmony with our nature, our God-given gifts. This fulfils us as individuals and enables us to make a meaningful contribution to the world around us. This is Prema, the highest degree of self-realisation — transcending the ego and rising to the sublime. drewlawrence.com drewjlawrence@gmail.com

POSITIVE PARENTING

five

truths

FOR EVERY NEW MUM AND DAD. by Anna Cole No matter how many books you read, or how many people you talk to, holding your new baby in your arms is a lifechanging moment. Depending on the birth experience you have, you may be elated or you may be exhausted. You may crest highs you’ve never known, or you may feel bleaker than the darkest thunder storm. As you embark on this new journey and begin adjusting to a new schedule, the questions are many. Am I doing this right? Should I feed her or bathe her? Should she be feeding or sleeping? Are we bonding? Should I feel this confused? The questions may go deeper. How do I want to raise this child? What are my beliefs and how do they differ from my parents’ beliefs? Who can help me in this? Sometimes, the questions can get desperate. When can I take a shower? Will I ever sleep again? And they rarely stop. Soon you may question how to help your child sleep alone, how best to respond to him when he cries, when you should respond, and how often. When to begin weaning, and how to introduce solids? The decision-making can seem endless and overwhelming, but it comes from the most sacred place there is: Love. Ultimately, these questions boil down to one question: Am I giving the best to my child? And I have an answer. You are Mama. You are Papa. You are there. You care. As the author and founder of Gentle Parenting Resources L.R Knost says, “Life is amazing. And then it’s awful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and awful, it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary.” Right at the heart of this new love story is you, the attachment you make and connection you build with your child. This

is a new role that you get to define, exactly as you wish. New parents can be hard on themselves. They become stressed in their desire to provide well. Before you let the questions overtake you, there are five truths that every new parent should know. They will soothe you when parenting is awful, ordinary and mundane, and they will help you find joy in those moments when it is amazing.

Five truths for every new parent Five minutes of undivided loving attention with your baby each day can go a very long way in building a healthy attachment. Holding, cherishing, noticing, and staring into your baby’s eyes lets him know you are there and he is wanted. Find someone who can listen well about what it’s like to be a parent, without needing to give you advice or fix you. Parenting is emotional work which can’t be done in isolation. Having an opportunity to offload helps you to expel parenting fears and explore your questions. With regular exchanges, there is time to cry, get angry, and work through worry, providing space to return to your baby calmer and more ready to face the next hurdle. Sometimes your baby may just need to cry in your arms, even after all of his or her physical needs are taken care of. Babies are capable of working through emotions too, in their way. Being born is a tough job, for you and your baby. If you are wracking your brains trying to work out why your babe is crying after her needs have been met, hold her, make eye contact and try listening. She may be trying to expel her fears too. (You can check out more about what we call ‘Staylistening’ with babies on the Hand in Hand Parenting website listed at bottom of page).

You are a good mum. You deserve support even when you are tired, frustrated and fed up. Yes, you do! Your baby deserves a mama – and a papa – who are rested and fed, has time for herself or himself, and can return to be really present with their child. Find people you can rely on so that if you need something, you aren’t shy to ask. Ever. Your baby cries for a reason. You will never ‘spoil’ them by responding with love. Babies do not cry to manipulate or control. Sometimes the going feels just as tough for your little one as it does for you. Their young brains cannot show you everything they feel through primitive language and gesture, but your physical love and affection shows them you are close and that they will always be loved and protected.

Anna Cole is a Hand in Hand Instructor. Find out more at handinhandparenting.org and keep an eye on her Facebook page for upcoming online class for parents of under 10s and also preteens in September. This article is based on the ideas, wisdom and care of Stephanie Parker, and the team at Hand in Hand Parenting.

POSITI V E AT TR ACTION

my family healthcare toolbox WHAT’S TRUE FOR ME.

by Judith McAdam Nurturing my family’s immune system over the years has meant learning to stand in my own power and develop a complimentary approach to our wellbeing. I remember having to work hard as a young mother to trust my maternal instincts, against a backdrop of popular opinions and the do’s and don’ts of societal and generational conditioning. As the matriarch, I was consciously aware of the power of a loving environment where everyone felt safe, secure and supported. When inner truths unfolded about my own self-care, I took to doing as much ‘work’ on myself as I could, including meditation, visualisation, my own Reiki practice, and other holistic treatments. Don’t get me wrong – there were times where it all went to a ‘ball of chalk’. However, over the years, with a little bit of ‘learned behaviour’ thrown in, a lot of these practices have rippled out to my children, and now, my clients. As adults, my children make up their own mind on how best to maintain a healthy and balanced life. Deciphering between intuition and fear took a bit of time and patience. Step by step, my personal rule of thumb with

“As the matriarch, I was consciously aware of the power of a loving environment.”

regard to my family’s health unfolded into a simple equation:

Love + Maternal Instinct & Intuition + Good Nutrition & Exercise + Complementary Medicine = Family Health and Wellbeing By complementary medicine, I am referring to treatments and products that are used alongside standard medical treatments. I am also speaking from my own life experience as a divorced parent, and am in no way ignoring the equal importance of the paternal instinct. Winter is fast approaching and, in truth, we have a duty to ourselves and our wonderful doctors and nurses to take responsibility for keeping ourselves and our families as fit and healthy as we can. So, I have decided to share with you some tried and tested tools in my own ‘Family Healthcare Tool Box’. You will, of course, develop your own tools by listening to your intuition, in conjunction with complementary methods, which very much includes medical advice from your family doctor. – The importance of a healthy diet really can’t be underestimated. I always strived to have a good breakfast, a healthy lunch in their lunch box and a hearty dinner on the table when my children were growing up. – Personally, I am a big believer in using

a good multivitamin. The one I have used, and still use for myself and my family, is called Vibracell. Recently, I have started to take Whole Health Immune Complex. Both are available from the New Vistas range of Healthcare products for adults and children. Always follow the recommended dosage and guidelines.* – Fresh air, exercise and a good night’s sleep were, and still are, healthy habits developed over the years in our house. – No matter how I tried when they were young, the odd cold, cough, sick stomach or earache would invariably slip through the net. Using my intuition and a thermometer, if I thought the illness was manageable, I would use a variety of excellent homeopathic or herbal remedies from the New Vistas or the A. Vogel children’s and adult’s line**. All that being said, we are just a normal family, with ups and downs like everyone else. Don’t be fearful, trust your intuition, put yourself and your family’s health and wellbeing at the top of your list, and use all the fabulous tools that are available to you to build your own ‘Family Healthcare Toolbox’. With love, Judith * newvistashealthcare.com ** avogel.ie judithmcadam.com

guilt as

your teacher SELF – LOVE - FRUIT OF EMOTIONAL INQUIRY.

by Amanda Sophia You are a good person, beloved. You already have an internal compass within you, so it is time to start trusting yourself. Guilt may show up as a teacher, asking you why you are not trusting yourself and why you punish yourself. Though guilt can relate to a deep commitment to ethics, it often involves self-sabotage: “I made a mistake, therefore I am bad and I should suffer.” You may feel guilty for something you did, or didn’t do but wanted to do, something you think you did or something you didn’t do enough of. If guilt is connected to the past, realise that it is normal to wish that you could have done more or to wish that you had made a different decision. It is normal to question your decisions and behaviours. It is healthy if you do so with self-love and self-inquiry, avoiding berating yourself. Natural guilt is hard-wired into the nervous system, an internal compass helping you to identify unethical behaviour and change course. Destructive guilt is painful and self-punishing and creates a feeling that you are always in the wrong. Objective guilt might be related to social or political actions for which we need to take responsibility and resolve in the present moment, not let fester. Perhaps, when you were young, guilt was forced upon you by family members, teachers, society or religious structures as a way to control you or guide you to make moral choices. However, you are an adult now and you know the difference between right and wrong. When you harm someone, it is normal and healthy to feel bad about it, to experience regret and to wish you could take it back or do something to make the person feel better. What isn’t healthy is to beat yourself up continually.

16

How to heal and release from guilt: • Take responsibility for what is causing the guilt and for resolving it. • Focus on the present moment – what you can do right now. • Change your perception of how you can move forward. • Forgive yourself. • Embody that you are a good person by trusting that you will always do your best with the knowledge that you have at this time. • Be compassionate with yourself when

“...self-forgiveness, the most powerful step you can take to rid yourself of destructive guilt.” you see guilt taking over. Acknowledge it. Don’t judge yourself. Place your hand on your heart and reassure yourself that you are good. • Visualise burning and composting your guilt, replacing it with kindness and forgiveness. • Please write a note on your mirror that you see each day that promises selfforgiveness, the most powerful step you can take to rid yourself of destructive guilt Listen to your inner voice and how it reacts to what you say and do. Is your voice kind or mean? Is it accepting or critical? When you can love yourself unconditionally, you can trust yourself unconditionally. This builds confidence and self-kindness, so that destructive guilt simply falls away.

POSITIVE PE ACE

truthor dare THE PROS AND CONS OF BEING A TRUTH SEEKER. by Sandy Newbigging

“...own your mind... especially when what you’re being told breeds fear rather than freedom.”

19 We may think we want to know ‘the truth’, but do we really? As a monk, meditation teacher and creator of the Mind Detox method, my goal is to do whatever I can to live my life with facts and truths, rather than fictions or falsehoods. I’m not alone in this quest, as many similarly intentioned souls, on spiritual paths, also aim to ‘see beyond the illusions of the mind’ (also known, in the language of Sanskrit, as the seeing beyond the ‘maya’). If you are reading this, then there’s a high likelihood that you are a truth seeker too. Although knowing ‘the truth’ may seem like an obvious thing for us all to want, there appears to be some pros and cons that come into play when seeking truth. Knowing these can help us to prepare for the possible consequences of finding out what’s true, and provide comfort when faced with the not-so-easy knock-on effects. For example, one con is that the truth can sometimes be unpleasant, ‘dark’ or scary. We may uncover certain things about our self, other people or the world we live in, that can be hard to process, understand, look at and even live with. If we are willing to see these not-so-nice ‘home truths’, without emotionally spinning out, then we will remain resilient and gain the big rewards of not burying our head in the proverbial sand. Another downside of being a truth seeker is known as ‘cognitive dissonance’. This is the mental discomfort that can be experienced when presented with alternative beliefs, or realities, that conflict with the ones we currently hold. This discomfort can cause us to reactively reject, and push away, any unwanted ‘truths’ and so being willing to experience this

discomfort appears to be a prerequisite of progress. Cognitive dissonance can also impact our relationships because some of the people we know and love may not want to know, and may not love us for sharing what we discover. This can make ‘truth’ a sometimes-isolated quest, with some friends falling away and others rejecting or ridiculing us, as a way of protecting their own beliefs, and not having their more ‘comfortable’ version of reality rocked. On the bright side, there are a number of pros for living with our eyes wide open. Knowing the fuller story of any given situation is incredibly empowering. If it is a potential truth about yourself, then you can do something about it. You can take the correct steps to make positive changes and end up with a better experience of life. Or, if it’s a truth about something possibly going on in the world, then gathering more information can help you to make more informed decisions, be better prepared for what’s potentially in the pipeline and, again, take the necessary steps to be safe and successful. From a spiritual perspective, it is near impossible to fully awaken if we are not willing to look at certain aspects of life and know the real reality. As a result, I’ve observed that most paths tend to require what I refer to as an ‘info awakening’. This is when we work towards seeing beyond our conditioned beliefs, attitudes and assumptions, and become more able to see what’s really going on. We stop believing everything we’ve been told to believe and start to form our own ‘conscious conclusions’. Or, said differently, as we wake up we can fully see beyond the ‘bulls**t’ and more quickly get

a sense of if something ‘smells fishy’. Here are 5 questions that can be used to find the facts within possible fictions: 1) What am I being told to think and believe? Is it true? 2) Who benefits from me believing what I’m being told? 3) What if the opposite of what I’m being told is true? 4) What is happening that I’m being distracted from? 5) What are both mainstream and alternative sources saying? Are there any differences? Why? Ask Questions 1-4 again if there is conflicting information) Aim to form your own conscious conclusions by questioning your assumptions, challenging your beliefs, and doing your best to research the realty of any given situation. I’m not suggesting you completely ignore the evening news or believe all conspiracies at first glance. I’m saying own your mind. Don’t believe anything just because someone tells you to – including what I’m saying here! Gather information for all sides (from multiple sources) and be a warrior for the truth in a world of competing agendas and widespread worrisome headlines especially when what you’re being told breeds fear rather than freedom.

POSITIVE WISDOM

falling into

abundance

FIND THE ROOT OF YOUR WISDOM THIS AUTUMN. by Karolina Banaszkiewicz

20 Chestnuts fall from the trees and autumn leaves shower like gold, like rainbows. It is a season of abundance. It is a powerful time of the year to pause, reflect, and question. Am I full? Am I nourished? Am I giving from a full and replenished place? Am I receiving? Are my needs being fulfilled? Fall is a season of letting go, and letting go is the secret to life. Letting go means releasing any condition of suffering - physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. Letting go means you are getting out of your own way and releasing stress. Letting go means you are reconnecting with your body. The energy behind what you think and feel does not just disappear if it is held back or repressed. It manifests through the physical body. A number of studies

indicate that whenever you transmute the lower emotions (doubt, fear, anger, anxiety, insecurity, sadness, shame, depression) into elevated emotions (gratitude, joy, love, inspiration, peace, wholeness, empowerment), the immune system functions better and your energy increases.

“Autumn is a time of the year to really appreciate life. It is a mystical season of contemplation and the spirit.”

body safe, we need to move and learn how to control our emotions, behaviours and thoughts. We can do this by practising meditation, mindfulness, breathing and/ or singing. It is essential to keep our body alive, for instance, through yoga. Van der Kolk recommends engaging in some sort of practice that involves touch and bodywork as it helps to release physical tension, leading to a release of emotion. Autumn is a time of the year to really appreciate life, to surrender, and honour and respect what we do not know. It is a mystical season of contemplation and the spirit.

Bessel van der Kolk – a psychiatrist, author, researcher and educator based in Boston – asserts that in order to keep our

I recently came across a poem entitled ‘Remember’ by Joy Harjo and was moved by its lines: “Remember the sky that you were born under, know each of the star’s stories. (…) Remember your birth, how your mother struggled to give you form and breath. You are evidence of her life, and her mother’s, and hers. Remember your father. He is your life, also. Remember the earth whose skin you are: red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth brown earth, we are earth. Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems. (…) Remember you are all people and all people are you.”

Learn more about your ancestors and family history. How much do you know about your grandparents’ lives? What skills have you learnt from your parents? Can you identify five people whose words or actions influenced your life? Family isn’t always blood. Has anyone else inspired you to live your life to the fullest? Make a list of those people and thank them. Reflect on how you can use your gifts, talents and strengths to serve others. Travel “home” to the root of your wisdom and shift into an abundance mindset this autumn. Open yourself up to an infinite source of abundance: health, wealth, joy, love and happiness.

THE MAGNIFICENCE OF HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS. by Alison McEvoy

22

We recently spoke to Lee Carroll, the channel for “an angelic energy from the other side of the veil”, named Kryon. As we are interconnected with all that is, we can tune into the answers we seek from Couching the new consciousness wherever we are. The way into the energy Kryon announces himself as being “of field, is through our intuition. To seek magnetic service”. The significance of answers “drop into your hearts and use this announcement only emerged slowly your intuition,” says Lee. It may not give into Lee’s understanding. Science can the kind of answers your mind demands, now show that the earth’s magnetics are but the energy will speak to you in the related to our human consciousness. We language of feeling, and you will know. have known for some time that whales If you’re not sure, you can always have an inner navigation system attuned ask a trusted woman in your life! Lee notes to the magnetic grid. However, there is that “women have the best intuition on now an emerging realisation that human the planet. That’s why they should be our beings cconsciousness has a profound spiritual leaders. They are the ones who relationship with these magnetics. take care of the kids...solve the problems... “Suddenly it [human consciousness] women have the ability to go to a place is structured...patterned...we can analyse where they can feel...feeling is the answer.” it...Kryon [is here] to move the magnetics as a couch for the new consciousness.” Shifting magnetics means a shift in human consciousness. This shift is an evolution: a growth that will enable us to become wiser and more in touch with the meaning of being here on earth so that we may live a more attuned life – a life attuned into the real meaning of being.

Consciousness is energy The movie ‘The Field’ is here to share this emerging understanding of human consciousness. Our consciousness is a form of energy. We are part of a ‘field’ composed not of individual-blades-ofgrass consciousness, but a field in which our thoughts are interconnected, forever. No part of that field is ever destroyed or disappears. It can indeed change form, such as when people pass on, however their consciousness is still part of the field. We can still talk to loved ones who have passed and choose to feel their presence. What it means to understand how our thought behaves as energy in a field of consciousness, is causing great excitement amid scientific circles. Now, the “powerhouse people” behind the science want to share what they have gleaned, for the benefit of all: “Our metaphysical view that consciousness might be a form of energy is validated...Distance no longer matters... Praying for someone at a distance is energy transmission...and now it is physics.”

Energy gives answers

“our collective consciousness is a field of energy such that our thoughts are interconnected, forever.”

“The story is bigger than we have been told” The ramifications of the emerging science cannot yet be told. What it means to be interconnected, to live in a multidimensional reality, to have a heart that connects us to all that is right in the core of our being...to live with this awareness changes our playing field, so to speak. We will be able to do things, using our consciousness, that we could not have dreamed of. What can you do? Go into your heart, go online, listen, look and seek out more in every way that you can. Curiosity is a key to awakening. kryon.com

POSITIVE TANTR A

truth & GIFTS OF THE SRI YANTRA. by Dawn Cartwright Many years ago, my love affair with Tantra took me to the mystical forests of South India. There I visited Devipuram, a Sri Vidya Tantra Ashram in Andra Pradesh. Nothing could have prepared me for what I would experience there and how my perception of truth - and love - would change. Mountains nestled themselves around Devipuram like sleeping gods and goddesses. Sky clad deities revealed secret mudras coded in the language of love. The air was electric, as if the centre of the cosmos was there, hidden in plain sight. Soon after I arrived, I met Guruji Sri Amritananda Natha, a revolutionary Sri Vidya Guru, the visionary who created Devipuram. Guruji introduced me to Sri Vidya, a path of self-awareness filled with with geometry, mathematics, science and physics, mantras, yantras - and flower adorned deities showered with devotion from sunrise to sunset. There I discovered truth and love as the pulse between lover and beloved. A mystical marriage that births the cosmos. And I fell in love too, with Sri Vidya, instantly. During my time at Devipuram, I took the first steps to learn the complexities of the Sri Yantra, the king of all yantras, the centre of the Sri Vidya path. The Sri Yantra is the geometric form of the cosmos and the human body. The macrocosm and the microcosm. Composed of nine enclosures, it is the blueprint for all of life. THE SRI YANTRA, LOVE & TRUTH “The centre of every experience is yourself.” Sri Amirtananda Natha At the center of the Sri Yantra, there is a single dot, the Bindu, a Sanskrit word for truth. Reality exists here in its purest form. The Bindu is truth itself, existence before it explodes into being.

love

The Bindu is everything that exists - before it is experienced. Surrounding the Bindu is the first triangle. The mystical quality of three. The knower, the known and the knowing. Awareness is the first step toward becoming. The lover, the beloved and the loving. I learned to see and recognise truth in every experience. Around the Bindu and the inner triangle, there are seven more enclosures, garlands and garlands of triangles. The eight-triangle enclosure is the sound of creation. The vibration that makes up everything that exists. I learned that life, truth, love is a vibration that pervades everything. Then, moving out from the centre of the Sri Yantra, two enclosures, made up of ten triangles each. These enclosures taught me about the elements that give form to truth. I learned to experience love through my senses, rather than my mind. I experienced truth through sound, touch, sight, taste and smell. Returning to the basics in this way taught me that truth is touchable. It’s see-able. This helped me to realise my thoughts, while they may be interesting to me, are thoughts. Truth is something different. It is a sound I can hear and a scent I can smell, before I name it or define it. A direct link to reality. The definition of love. Surrounding all of this, there are fourteen triangles. This is the place, in the Sri Yantra, in the blueprint of life, where we become human beings. From absolute truth to awareness, to vibration, to the elements and the senses, to form. Truth appearing in many forms, still truth. All of this before thought. Pure observation without evaluation. I realised how often I was interacting with my thoughts about a person, rather than the person themselves. I learned to

separate my senses from my thoughts. A constant invitation to embrace what is real, to be open, inquisitive, curious and connected to what is actually here. Then, garlands of lotuses, first eight-petaled, then sixteen. Lessons for living in the world, interacting with others. I learned about movement and flow. I learned that life is always moving, never static. Just when I think I know someone or something … something more, something new, is revealed. Truth, I realised, is infinite and it is alive. Truth is love revealing itself every instant. There is always more to experience. I discovered I’d often freeze an experience or an opinion, make it a fact in my own mind and, in that process, lose my connection to truth, to what is real. The garlands of lotuses taught me that the cosmos and everyone around me is constantly expanding. It’s up to me to stay here, in the moment, connected to what’s real right now. The last enclosure, the Bhupura, is the enclosure that surrounds and protects the Sri Yantra. Truth fully expressed. The lover loving the beloved forever. The Bhupura is the world and the cosmos and you and me revealing more of who we are, expanding, then dissolving back to the Bindu and beginning over and over and over again. To me, this is the willingness to stay: stay in relationship with myself and with you, with my life, with the world. It’s the love that is experienced when I commit to truth, a commitment that is all about being here, alert and aware and expanding and flowing every instant. the wisdom

of Adamus AN INTERVIEW WITH GEOFFREY A. HOPPE AND LINDA HOPPE. by Aisling Cronin Interview by Paul Congdon

26

“We don’t have to work at self-realisation – ultimately, realisation is just allowing a very natural process to take place.”

Geoffrey A. Hoppe is the founder of The Crimson Circle – a spiritual development group based in Colorado, USA – and channeller of the ascended master, Adamus Saint Germain. He was born and raised in the Midwest United States, as part of a large Catholic family. His interest in spirituality and metaphysics began when he was 19 years old, as he practised hypnotism with a friend. While in a trance state, Geoffrey’s friend began to recount a series of previous lifetimes – an occurrence which startled them both! This prompted Geoffrey to immerse himself into the study of metaphysics and religion for the following few years. His spiritual journey then receded into the background for nearly 20 years, as his business career became steadily more demanding. Geoffrey worked for several advertising agencies and manufacturing companies in the Midwest and Texas, in senior marketing positions. His wife, Linda, is a gifted artist, who wrote a ground-breaking curriculum for Texas’ first high school honours Art Education program. Her artistic talents saw her assume the role of Fashion Merchandise Manager with a Fortune 500 company, helping to set the styles and designs for each upcoming season. She also served as manager for Geoffrey’s marketing consulting company for several years. Geoffrey and Linda met in high school and were married in 1977. We were thrilled to interview them for Positive Nights recently, as we got to learn more about their amazing journey. Geoffrey’s guide, Tobias, first presented himself to Geoffrey in 1997 on an aeroplane flight. Geoffrey explains that Tobias is an angelic being who has incarnated on Earth many times, most notably as Tobit, one of the main characters in the biblical Book of Tobit. He and Geoffrey communicated for nearly a year before Geoffrey finally told Linda about his “invisible friend”! Soon after this, Tobias started working with clients of a local psychologist, providing deep insights into their past lives and current challenges.

Geoffrey founded the Crimson Circle in 1999, to share the teachings that were rapidly flowing through him. He now channels the famous ascended master Adamus Saint-Germain. When speaking about the moment she found out about Tobias, Linda said, ‘We’d been married for quite a while at that point, and I love Geoff. It was surprising – it was nothing I could have imagined – but when he approached me on it, his honesty and his vulnerability were so strong, there was no way I couldn’t be open to it. When Geoff started channelling, the material really struck a chord with me.’ On the switch from Tobias to Saint Germain, Geoff said, ‘it was the last thing we could have expected, as I’d been working with Tobias for ten years. One day, he announced that he would be leaving, so that he could have another incarnation on the planet! He wanted to come back, live another life, and just enjoy it. He said that Saint Germain would be taking over. It was such a strange thing: Saint Germain came in, used the name “Adamus”, and I soon learned that he was totally different from Tobias! When I was channelling, he wanted me to keep my eyes open, walk around the room, interact with people … over the ten years I’d been channelling Tobias, I had always been seated, with my eyes closed.” Geoff explained that “Adamus” is a facet of Saint Germain that this well-known ascended master uses to express himself in the Crimson Circle. His teachings are designed to bring about rapid awakening … and according to Geoff and Linda, he is quite an outspoken and fiery teacher! One thing that often surprises those who are new to the Crimson Circle – but who may be familiar with other spiritual teachings – is that Adamus doesn’t agree with the concept of “dimensions” as we often think of them. ‘The way he talks about it is that what we call dimensions – putting layers and levels onto our experience – are simply

senses. He says we have different ways of sensing things. We don’t have to work at self-realisation – ultimately, realisation is just allowing a very natural process to take place. Don’t try to plan your enlightenment from a human perspective. Just get out of your own way and allow yourself to be. In the Crimson Circle, we use the phrase “relax into realisation”.’ Adamus is passionate about urging people to relax deeply into their true natures, rather than fighting against their perceived failures. ‘We actually have a course called Dreamwalk of Death, in which Adamus talks specifically about death, and what it is,’ Geoff shared with us. ‘He’s always laughing and saying, “Earth is the hard part, not transitioning to the higher realms!” He emphasises that deep down, we are used to the death process. We’ve done it thousands of times in previous incarnations, but humans fear death because we fear the loss of our identity – in some cases, we fear judgment once we arrive on the “other side.” Adamus makes it clear that in reality, we are not met by a judgemental, court-like situation when we cross over. Often, people take a while to realise that they’ve died, because from the soul’s perspective, it’s just not that big a deal!’ The process of relaxing into realisation can look different for everyone who experiences it, but the greatest defining feature of this journey that Linda and Geoff have witnessed over the years is a feeling of freedom. ‘There are no longer great battles within – you’ve come to full acceptance. You’ve come to terms with yourself.’ You can watch our full interview with Geoff and Linda on our YouTube channel – just search ‘Positive Life Magazine’ to find us. crimsoncircle.com

inspiration from Joe Dispenza BREAKING THE FOUR-MINUTE MILE OF CONSCIOUSNESS. Interviewer: Paul Congdon Author: Aisling Cronin

Dr. Joe Dispenza is a man who needs little introduction. He is an international lecturer, author and educator who is driven by the conviction that each of us has the potential for greatness and unlimited abilities. One of his deepest passions in life is teaching people how they can rewire their brains and recondition their bodies to make lasting changes. Dr. Joe received a B.Sc. from Evergreen State College, and his doctor of chiropractic degree from Life University, where he graduated with honours. His postgraduate training covered neurology, neuroscience, brain function and chemistry, cellular biology, memory formation, and ageing and longevity. His many published works include ‘You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter (2014)’ and ‘Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon (2017)’, both published by Hay House. Becoming Supernatural draws on research which has been conducted at his advanced workshops since 2012, and explores how everyday people are transforming themselves and their lives. Dr. Joe has long been drawn towards the unlocking of abilities that may well seem ‘supernatural’ to many of us. As

a researcher, he is keenly interested in findings from fields such as neuroscience, epigenetics and quantum physics, which explore the science behind spontaneous remissions. He uses that knowledge to help people heal from illnesses and chronic conditions, as well as evolving their consciousness. In addition to offering a variety of online courses and teleclasses, Dr. Joe has personally taught three-day Progressive Workshops, five-day Advanced Workshops, and seven-day Week Long Advanced Retreats in the U.S. and abroad. In 2018, his workshops became weeklong offerings, and the content of the progressive workshops became available online (learn more about these through the events section at drjoedispenza.com). We were very excited to have the opportunity to chat with Dr. Joe recently, delving into the passions that drive his life’s work, as well as learning about his upcoming week-long workshop in London this November. He hopes to visit Ireland in early 2021, so we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes peeled for more details on that!

Dr. Joe on what is giving him the greatest joy right now: “Over the last few months, what has excited

me the most is the opportunity to start bridging the gap between people’s lived experiences, and the mainstream scientific understanding of what is possible for human beings to achieve.” “The people who do the work and attend our events don’t look extraordinary – they’re just ordinary people, talking about their own experiences. And the story they’re telling is so charged with the energy of truth, it makes those who are listening really lean in. We’re breaking through into a new consciousness. I always compare it to the four-minute mile (running an entire mile in the space of four minutes). The four-minute mile was once considered medically impossible, but since the first person did it, over 1400 more people have gone on to achieve the same feat.” “So when people hear about those kinds of transformations happening during our week-long events, they lean in and start seeing what is possible. They say to themselves, “if this person can heal, so can I.” “We have this amazing collection of personal testimonies, and we have a great collection of scientific data, and I think that both of these things together show us that evidence is the loudest voice.”

“This is a time to be courageous: to open our hearts, stay conscious and keep doing our work.”

“Recently, we’ve had a lot of interest from universities around the world, wanting to know more about we’re doing. How do we change gene expression? How can we change the conversation around medicine? These are openminded researchers who are not trying to undermine anybody’s efforts. They’re interested in curiosity, and the inquiry into what is possible for human beings. “ “Healthy, robust conversations are taking place about how we can close the gap between philosophy and experience, or knowledge and wisdom. I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to sit at a table with renowned scientists, discussing what is possible for human beings.”

What he has learned from recent global events.

29

this is a time to be courageous: to open our hearts, stay conscious and keep doing our work. My highest value is community, because I believe we are nothing without the people who do the work. We are a living organism that informs one another, honours one another and respects one another.”

“All I offer people is my greatest understanding of the truth.”

On whether it is truly possible to ‘bypass’ our brain – to access different possibilities from the ones we’ve been trained to believe – given that this is the filter we use to experience life while we are here:

“One thing I’ve learned is that my highest “That’s a great question. It indicates you’re value is community. The people who come really doing the work! One of the main to our events … they’re not philosophers, purposes of meditation is to get beyond they’re simply people who have committed the analytical mind. What separates the to doing the work. The reason they do the conscious mind from the subconscious work is because they’re having massive mind is the analytical part of ourselves. synchronicities in their lives, and they The analytical mind, in itself, is a healthy don’t want the magic to end! These are thing. When you’re navigating your life people who are striving for the unknown – ethically – when you’re learning new striving to believe in another possibility.” things and weighing what you know and “During a time when many are afraid, what you don’t know – the sensibility of

the analytical mind is what allows you to make good decisions in your life.” “So there’s nothing wrong with the analytical mind, but in order for us to change unwanted programs or habits in our life, we have to get into the subconscious mind. We teach people how to self-regulate and slow their brain waves down, so they will be more open to change.” “What you’ll often see in people who spend the majority of their time in the fastpaced beta state – where they are driven by hormones related to stress – is that they’re very over-focused, very analytical. This is a state where you’re trying to predict. Trying to control. This is when you’re preoccupied by a worst-case scenario in your mind, because maybe it happened in the past and you don’t want it to happen again.” “So what we do is, encourage people to take their focus off whatever material subject is occupying their thoughts, and instead focus on a concept like energy or space … that act, in itself, begins to slow the brain waves down and pulls a person’s focus towards their inner world. Then the voice in your head that constantly tells people what they should do slowly begins to turn off, and you can see different

That’s exactly what the pineal gland is.” “Like a radio receiver, this gland can latch onto invisible frequencies, access the information these frequencies carry, and translate this into clear imagery that we experience in our brains.”

“When I was in graduate school, I had an endocrinology teacher who was brilliant, and she had a textbook that really introduced me to the concept of certain places in the body having their own frequency. Frequency is information, On the global transformation of frequency is consciousness. So these consciousness: energy centres have their own glands, their own hormones, their own chemicals “All we need is for one person to break – their own individual ‘brains’, if you will. that four-minute mile, and then all of a They are connected to the autonomic sudden, this gives other people permission nervous system of the body, which is more to do the same. Transducers are like a TV antenna that takes invisible

“This is a time in history where we all have to lead by example.” “The new consciousness that is coming in is one where we’re not so dependent on government or medicine or academia to take care of us. We will naturally want to take care of one another.”

On his upcoming event in London this November: “This is a week-long event, being held at the ExCeL Centre in London, which will carefully follow safety guidelines. It is designed as an opportunity for people to retreat from their lives for a whole week, removing them from the constant stimulations of their external environment. This gives them the opportunity to get beyond unwanted thoughts, habits and behaviours, to create something new for themselves. In order to come, you first need to do the Progressive Workshop – an online course available on my website – and that gives you all the tools and information you need to join the weeklong event.” “We’ll be coming to Dublin early next year, too, so I look forward to that.”

japanese-irish wisdom A FUSION OF HEALING TRADITIONS. by Alison McEvoy Ireland and Japan hold a deep reverence and respect for the wild beauty of nature, its healing wisdom and its power. Both cultures are rich in the sacred traditions of shamanic practices, healing crafts and ancient healing sites. Both traditions follow the healing power of nature to resolve illness through natural observation, movement and release. The body has an innate intelligence that, when deeply grounded and relaxed, has the power to purge and release distortions. Healing practices in Japan and Ireland show the body to be a microcosm of nature itself – the macrocosm. Our bodies are deeply connected to nature and occupy a space of awareness beyond our thinking mind’s capacity. This is why people seek relaxation in nature and places charged with negative ions. Both Japanese and Irish healing traditions advocate that when a body becomes still, relaxed and connected to a state of natural homeostasis, it finds its own coherence and balance. A grounded and relaxed body knows its own authentic expression. In Japan, they say: ‘Emptiness is fulfillment and happiness is being in your hara (centre of your belly, two fingers below the navel).’ Younis Fakhfakh lives in Ireland, and has studied martial arts, body awareness, Amatsu and Japanese healing systems since 2002. He has taken the best from many oriental healing traditions and

masters, bringing them to Ireland, where he practices and facilitates. On Irish soil, he has formulated a new dynamic healing system called ‘Kukan Taijutsu’. ‘Kukan Taijutsu’ represents a new form of body conditioning that allows us to become one with our bodies in the healing presence of Irish nature. Connection with nature is at the heart of its connective movement, but on a practical level, it increases our body’s intrinsic strength and incorporates the best techniques from both martial arts and Amatsu. The result is that movement becomes more fluid, relaxed, graceful, and completely integrated. Saralee Cassidy has been practicing and teaching Seiki-soho (Japanese breathing awareness) through yearly events and gatherings. She has ongoing connections with the international Seiki community, and wishes to bring Japan to Ireland. She says, ‘Japanese healing has the power to re-connect Ireland to its authentic natural wisdom, connection to nature, life and breath.’ Seiki – another Japanese tradition – empowers people to understand the nature of energy moving through the body, as a thinking pattern held within the breath’s movement. The observer and the observed become one through a process of resonance in breath. Both therapists have come together to create a Japanese fusion experience,

blending Japanese healing craft with Irish nature.

“Healing practices in Japan and Ireland show the body to be a microcosm of nature itself – the macrocosm.” Both the Japanese and ancient Celtic traditions look to the body as part of nature, tapping into a space that utilises the power of non judgement. Through breath observation, movement and resonance, one can find one’s authenticity, beyond the stress and conditions of the noisy world. These hybrid healing traditions offer a new space of focused concentration in nature. This space of non-judgement allows the body to find itself beyond its cultural conditioning, rediscovering its own inner movement and natural connection. Such findings release personal restrictions and produce real feelings of well being, bringing the mind into a deeper presence.

GOOD LIFE 2.0

truth, love

and community BREAKING OUT OF OUR BUBBLES. by Davie Philip “Relationship is the fundamental truth of this world of appearance.”Rabindranath Tagore We are living in a frightening, post-truth era, constantly exposed to fictions that divide us and atomise our communities. Nietzsche coined the term, perspectivism, to describe the idea that there is no objective truth, everybody makes their own reality. In these uncertain times we need to build our capacity for healthy dialogue, and to break out of our bubbles. It seems as though there are more issues setting us against one another than ever before. The hard truth is that our world is fragmented, metaphorically and literally heating up, and is on the verge of multiple disruptions that we are unprepared to respond to on our own. Centuries of competition and alienation have brought us to this point. Our centralised global systems, built on inequality and wealth maximisation, encourage and reward individualism. This leaves us vulnerable to shocks, fearful, lonely and unable to collaborate. There is a long-held assumption that we are by nature individualistic and selfish.

34

In his book ‘Humankind’, historian Rutger Bregman offers a different perspective. He says that most people deep down are pretty decent, and ‘our secret superpower is our ability to cooperate’. When our outdated view of human nature changes, we will be more able to co-create a better world. We are a social species dependent on cooperation to survive and thrive. Rethinking how we relate to each other, as well as the living world, will determine our future. According to Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, ‘only when we’ve truly fallen back in love with the Earth will our actions spring from reverence and the insight of our interconnectedness.’ He also predicted that the Buddha of our time will not be an individual but a sangha; a community of people who practice together. Nothing in life is possible without community, and it is love that connects us. The real work of cultivating community is relationship building. One of the most important predictors of our health is the quality of our relationships. The social distancing of this pandemic has highlighted the impact on our well-being

from being unable to physically connect with others. Strengthening relationships with people around us and working on projects of common interest will help us seize the opportunities of these extraordinary times. Indian poet and philosopher Tagore wrote that “Relationship is the fundamental truth of this world of appearance.” Buddha’s realisation was that interconnectedness is the true nature of all beings. Embracing this perennial truth,

“Nothing in life is possible without community, and it is love that connects us.” we move from ego-system to eco-system awareness and begin to act as an integral part of the whole. By shifting from silo-thinking to systems-thinking we will better relate to ourselves, each other and the world around us. In many places we are witnessing an emergence of a new human culture rooted in this holistic world-view, one that is community-led, regenerative, circular, and healthy. But the truth is that this transformation isn’t happening as fast, or at the required scale that is needed. The urgency of this moment calls us to love more, connect deeper and sustain and revitalise our communities - together. Davie Philip is a community catalyst and facilitator at Cultivate, the sustainability cooperative based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, and a network weaver with ECOLISE the European network for communityled initiatives on climate change and sustainability. cultivate.ie

Buckwheat and Almond Meal Bread by Svetlana Sidorova - CNM Natural Chef Student With gluten intolerance on the rise, this delicious buckwheat and almond bread makes a fantastic healthy alternative. It is bursting with healthy fats from the nuts and seeds, and is full of fibre from the psyllium husk. Once you try this bread, you’ll never go back to shop-bought gluten free alternatives.

POSITIVE MEDICINE

the truth about

gluten AN ALTERNATIVE PATH. by Elle Fox

Gluten is a protein that is found in quite a few grains. There are many reasons that it has become a “problem food” for many, but we can boil them down to one main thing: human intervention. We’ve come a long way from the ancient societies who discovered that they could cultivate grasses for food. We’ve blended and combined modern wheat to produce something that is (supposedly) bigger and better, with greater yield and greater resistance to pests. But it bears no resemblance to the original steppe grasses that our ancestors were used to, and the gluten content is higher. Gluten gives bread its body and its springiness, but it is a complex molecule that is hard for our bodies to break down and modern food production methods don’t help. If you look at traditional societies, bread was not made in two and a half hours, as the bread you find in supermarkets is today. Now we use genetically modified yeast to make the bread rise very quickly, so there isn’t enough time for the micro-organisms to break down the gluten and starches. That’s why wholegrain sourdough, made over 24-48 hours, can be very well tolerated by people who are otherwise intolerant to gluten. The micro-organisms have started the digesting for you.

Other, even more harmful substances sneakily find their way into our food and further compound the problem. We have also introduced pesticides and other toxins. For example, glyphosate – a weed killer and mould reducer – is sprayed on the crops many times a year and at no point is it effectively removed. So, when you pair a difficult to digest substance like gluten – which is effectively like glue – with a toxic agent like glyphosate, it hangs around in the gut. That sets off alarm signals from the immune system which lines the gut and you get local inflammation. Inflammation is a vital part of your immune system’s response to injury and harmful things that enter your body and can result in a number of things like pain, swelling, redness or warmth. The gut is intimately connected with the skin and the lungs, so reactions to specific foods might manifest as problems with the sinuses, the ears, the throat or the skin. And gluten is the major aggravator for sufferers of inflammatory bowel conditions like Coeliac and Crohn’s disease. Any amount will make them very poorly. Many of these conditions are the inevitable result of a broken food production system and takes the naturopathic perspective that they can be greatly rehabilitated by healing the gut

with good bacteria and by eating foods that are gut friendly.

“Local food, organically grown and eaten in season, is the best thing you can give yourself.” Processed food is not friendly to the body. At CNM we’re hoping to re-educate people that local food, organically grown and eaten in season, is the best thing you can give yourself. It’s not grains that we should demonise, but the production methods. It’s part of the larger problem, which is that the mass production of food comes at the expense of its nutritional value.

POSITIVELY ORGANIC

seed saving in 2020 SECURING OUR FUTURE. by Hans Wieland

Six years ago, I wrote about “the importance of seed saving” on these pages, but given the effects the current pandemic has on seed production and supply, I feel it is timely and appropriate to revisit the topic. Early in the year, when our movements were drastically curtailed, people in their hundreds – who hadn’t gardened before – took to growing some food at home, and in the process caused the websites of seed suppliers to temporarily crash and close. That, to my knowledge, has never happened before! It also highlighted how fragile the system of seed supplies are, and how dependent Irish gardeners and commercial growers are on imported seeds. This was not always the case.

Seed saving is an integral part of food growing. Seed saving was an integral part of food growing for our ancestors. For the last 12,000 years, this was the traditional way farms and gardens were maintained. That only changed about 150 years ago, when seed companies emerged, selling seeds and slowly beginning to dominate the market. This development also started the process of losing seed varieties. At present, the figures are staggering: some 98 per cent of vegetable varieties have disappeared over the past century. Regulations are hastening the decline, according to Garden Organic – an organic charity in the UK, dedicated to researching and promoting organic gardening. (Footnote 1) Many activists also draw attention to the cultural importance of seed saving practices, especially their role in

maintaining traditional plant varieties. Garden Organic says 95 per cent of the vegetables eaten come from just 20 species of plants.

“Saving seeds helps to protect plant biodiversity. We need natural variation in our food plants.” “Food for tomorrow comes from seeds we save today!” I learned seed saving from my parents, who always saved seeds from their favourite tomatoes and beans, and also saved tubers from their favourite potato Sieglinde. At Neantog, we keep saving seeds from a tomato called Magda, which my late mum grew in her garden in Germany. We also trial tomato varieties each year from a tomato seed bank by Gerhard Bohl, which has 3000 varieties. For the last three years, we kept seed potatoes from our favourite crops of blue and purple potatoes, Violetta and Blue Emmalia. We also buy some of our seeds from Brown Envelope Seeds: an organic seed company in Cork, one of the very few Irish seed producers.

Where to start? The steps are easy. You grow your plants from seed, which need to be heirloom, not F1-Hybrids (Footnote 2). Some seeds are produced in the fruit of the plant, while other plants need to be allowed to mature and flower, letting the

seeds ripen. Many plants give us their seeds freely, because they self-seed easily. Others, we have to guide a little. Annuals are especially easy and ideal for beginner seed savers: peas and beans, dill, nasturtiums and calendula. Saving seeds from vegetable fruits like tomatoes, cucumbers and squash is also straightforward. The vegetables that need to go to flower in order to produce seeds are more of a challenge. These include carrots, old cabbage varieties and lettuces. For example, if some of your lettuces bolt, let them do so, and use them for saving seeds. If you want to get your children or grandchildren involved, choose sunflowers. The flower head produces the seeds we like to eat, and anyone who has carved a Halloween pumpkin knows the seeds are all inside.

The benefits of saving seeds Saving seeds helps to protect plant biodiversity. We need natural variation in our food plants in order to select the ones that are more heat tolerant, or drought tolerant, or disease resistant, and so on. If all the plants are the same, there is nothing to work with. Seeds saved from plants in your garden are adapted to your micro climate. As we adapt to climate change, selective breeding becomes ever more important. Saving seeds can reconnect us to nature in ways few other activities can, as we maintain the cycle of growth. Saving seeds is probably the most radical political action for any gardener and growers, as it puts us in control of growing our own food.Saving seeds saves money.

How to save seeds: 1. Selecting: The most suitable plants for beginners are peas, beans, peppers, tomatoes, dill and coriander. These plants have self-pollinating flowers, produce seed that need little attention before storing and are annual crops that need only one season to produce seed. 2. Harvesting seed: Only save from the most vigorous plants with the tastiest fruit. The trick is to identify and label the best plants for seed saving. – Peas and beans: Allow the pods to ripen on the plant until they are dry and turn brown. Remove the pods from the plant and dry indoors for at least 2 weeks before shelling. – Tomatoes: Take a fully ripe tomato, scoop out the seeds and pulp, place in a jar of water and ferment for a few days, the good seed will sink to the bottom. Rinse the seed in water and let dry on a paper towel. 3. Storing: Best in individual paper envelopes in airtight containers in a dry place. And don’t forget to label them! Footnote 1: According to a post on the website Regeneration International from 2016: “90 percent of the crop varieties grown 100 years ago are already gone. The Millennium Seed Bank Partnership estimates that 60,000 to 100,000 plant species are in danger of extinction.” Footnote 2: Seed produced by F1 plants is genetically unstable and cannot be saved for use in following years. Gardeners who use hybrid plant varieties must purchase new seed every year. For more information and courses, contact The Irish Seed Savers Association in Co. ENJOY THESE SCRUMPTIOUS MEAL IDEAS. by David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear In this article, we wanted to share one of our favourite curry recipes from our new book, “Vegan cooking for everyone”. This curry is easy to make and so tasty! Cauliflower is often dismissed as a ‘bland’ vegetable, but when baked, it acquires more flavour and a slightly charred note. It’s well worth getting the spices too. We hope you enjoy this meal as much as we do!

ALOO GOBI INDIAN POTATO AND CAULIFLOWER CURRY Ingredients 4 spring onions 3 cloves garlic 1 chilli (leave out the seeds if you prefer less spice) 1/2 thumb sized piece of ginger 1 whole head of cauliflower 250g potatoes 1 x 400ml can of coconut milk 1 x 400ml veg stock 1.5 tbsp black mustard seeds 1 tbsp ground turmeric 1 tbsp cumin seeds 1 tsp garam masala 2 tbsp tamari or soy sauce juice of 1/2 lemon salt and ground black pepper to taste

Instructions 1 Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2 Finely chop the spring onions, garlic (peel first), ginger and chilli ingredients. 3 Fill and boil the kettle. Once boiled, fill a pot and add a pinch of salt. 4 Chop the cauliflower and potato into small bite-sized pieces and boil for 10 mins. Drain and rinse, then put on a baking tray with 2 tbsp of oil and a generous pinch of salt. Bake for 10-15 mins until the cauliflower is starting to char and the potatoes are soft. 5 Heat a large non-stick frying pan on high heat and add 1 tbsp of oil. Once hot, add your chopped spring onions, ginger, garlic and chilli. Fry for 3 mins. 6 Add the spices and fry for 1 minute. 7 Add the coconut milk and veg stock and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. 8 Add in the baked cauliflower and potatoes and leave to reduce for 5 mins, until the sauce thickens. 9 Add the lemon juice, tamari and season to taste – this step is designed to achieve a harmony between the salt, acid, sweet and umami flavours. Serve with some coconut yogurt and coriander leaves, and enjoy!

“Cauliflower is often dismissed as a ‘bland’ vegetable, but when baked, it acquires more flavour.”

5 INGREDIENT EPIC VEGAN CHEESECAKE This cake is really easy to make, super tasty and uses only 5 ingredients. This one is really worth making. We topped it with fresh berries and a blueberry compote. Details for the blueberry coulis are down below.

Takes 20 minutes prep, 2 hour chilling. Makes 12 slices

Ingredients Base layer: 200g cashew nuts 200g pitted dates 2 tbsp coconut oil Cashew cheese layer: 250g raw cashew nuts – boil for 10 mins so they are super soft, or soak overnight 250g vegan cream cheese 100g coconut oil 150g maple syrup

Instructions 1 Line a 20cm/8 inch spring form cake tin with baking parchment. Pour the 200g of cashew nuts (for the base) into a food processor and blend until they form a breadcrumb-like consistency, which will take about a minute or so. Add the pitted dates and the coconut oil, then blend until it all comes together into a uniform texture – which takes another 2-4 minutes, depending on your food processor. 2 R emove the blended base ingredients and place them into the

springform cake tin. Use a spoon to compact it down and level it out, so the base is perfectly smooth and level. 3 C lean out the food processor. Drain and rinse the soaked

cashew nuts, then add them to the food processor along with the rest of the ingredients for the cashew cheese filling. It is very important you rinse them well, as this will remove some of the acid from soaking.

4 B lend until the mixture becomes super smooth, which will take

about 7-10 minutes. You want to be patient and really get it to a super-smooth velvety or silky texture. 5 U sing a silicone spatula or spoon, remove the cashew cheese

and add it on top of the base layer. Spread out the mixture so it is smooth, then place into the fridge to set for a couple of hours. 6 F or the blueberry coulis: Add 300g of frozen blueberries to a

saucepan with 50ml of boiling water and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and leave to cook for 10 mins. Add to a blender and blend till smooth. Pour through a sieve until the coulis is lovely, fine and super smooth. 1 R emove your cheesecake from the fridge and decorate with

berries and blueberry coulis. Enjoy – this is a really delicious, rich cake! thehappypear.ie

short & sweet A Spiral of Welcome THE BEAUTY OF AN TOBAR. by Aisling Cronin

An Tobar Spiritan Retreat Centre, located in Ardbraccan, Co. Meath, is a much-loved destination for spiritual seekers across Ireland and around the globe. An Tobar specialises in offering a warm, hospitable environment for guests. In keeping with the beautiful labyrinth located on their grounds, the venue operates through a ‘spiral of belonging’ – which means that visitors participate in the community according to their particular calling, inclination and time. ‘The Centre has a religious background, as it’s rooted in the Spiritan tradition,’ Jackie Smyth explains, ‘but we welcome people from all walks of life. Hospitality is a huge part of what An Tobar is about. We want to create a space where people feel they are being cared for: where they feel they are coming from their own homes, to another home.’ For the past few years, Fr Korko Moses S.J., a Jesuit priest from India who has been inspired by both Christian and Eastern spiritual traditions, has come to An Tobar to provide an Ashram Experience to people here. He is a spiritual guide and counsellor who teaches meditation and yoga, leads retreats, and has worked with people with addictions.

“An Tobar is a sanctuary, where guests know they are welcomed.” Another regular visitor to An Tobar is Tony Sheridan C. S. Sp. He offers Capacitar workshops which help participants to unwind from their everyday stresses, using tools such as creative dance, EFT and Tai Chi. An Tobar also offers space for family support groups, yoga classes, meditation and prayer retreats, and much more. 44 Food With Heart CORNUCOPIA RETURNS … AND WE’RE THRILLED! by Aisling Cronin Cornucopia Wholefoods Restaurant is a much-loved Dublin institution, located on Wicklow Street. It holds a treasured place in many Irish foodies’ hearts. Over the years, this iconic family-run restaurant has developed a name for persevering and innovating during challenging times.

“While on lockdown, Tony never stopped creating. He came up with all kinds of innovative dishes!” Cornucopia’s doors were first opened in January 1986 by couple Deirdre O’Mara and Neil McCafferty. The late 1980s was not the easiest time to demonstrate entrepreneurial flair, but Cornucopia thrived through those early years. In 2008, as another recession began to take hold, it expanded from the original 48-seat restaurant to an 88-seat one. Soon after this, the restaurant extended into the Georgian building next door, giving them a total of 120 seats! Given their flair for adaptability and creativity, it is no surprise that Cornucopia responded rapidly to global circumstances earlier this year. Deirdre praises head chef Tony Keogh, who used his time at home to experiment with new flavours and meal ideas. ‘While on lockdown, Tony never stopped creating,’ she revealed. ‘He came up with all kinds of innovative dishes, so we have a row of them ready to unfold.’ Sunday brunch options have been updated to include even more delicious flavours – Deirdre cites their new pancakes with peanut butter cream, their ‘plenty’ burgers, and their vegan French toast as three wonderful examples of this. We can’t wait to try them out! During the period of movement restrictions, Cornucopia’s tasty menu is available for take-away and kerbside collections. Delivery is available in Dublin 1 to 16 on Saturdays, and they will bring their menu right to your door. We highly recommend stocking your freezers with Cornucopia’s nutritious frozen main courses. cornucopia.ie

Simplifying periods NEVER ‘RUN OUT’. by Alison McEvoy Mooncup® reported an unprecedented 578% growth in online sales during lock-down in Ireland. We caught up with the Director Eileen Greene from Mooncup Ltd, the company behind the original silicone menstrual cup. The global Coronavirus outbreak in spring 2020 led to shortages of not just toilet paper, but of period products too. In times like this, the benefits of the Mooncup® menstrual cup can become all the more clear. With the restrictions fundamentally altering daily life for millions across the globe, people had time to re-evaluate their choices. As with other aspects of our lives, when it comes to our periods, we have had an opportunity to ask whether we want to return to ‘business as usual’ or if we’re ready to try a new, more sustainable way. Unlike tampons which can cause dryness and leave fibres behind,

“we have had an opportunity...‘business as usual’ or... a new, more sustainable way.” the Mooncup respects your natural balance. It holds three times more than a regular tampon so it gives you longer lasting protection. It saves you money too: one Mooncup lasts for years, and costs the same as you would spend on disposables in 6-8 months. Manufactured in the UK, Mooncup® was the world’s first silicone menstrual cup and is a brand synonymous with quality. Eileen shared that the company offers a unique Advice Service run by qualified medical health professionals. As she puts it, ‘we’re passionate about supporting people through their Mooncup journey.

The power of our Life-Force PRANIC HEALING. by Alison McEvoy As a new mum, stress and sleep deprivation are my twin accompaniments throughout the days. My first ever, de-stress, Pranic Healing session of just 30 minutes left me feeling more centred and calm than I have felt in months. I could feel the tingling throughout my body.

“With prana in balance, the body will do what it is designed to do...heal itself.”

David Connell, electrical engineer by trade, turned to Pranic Healing at a pivotal moment in his life - his mind, emotions and body really needed a turn around. His wife had been doing Pranic Healing for some time. He was sceptical...until he observed the very real improvements in his wife’s life which came as a result. After attending an introductory evening with her, during which he experienced a practical demonstration and explanation of the structure behind the method, he was hooked: “During the twin hearts meditation, my mind went quiet for the first time in years. I felt so still, so quiet.” He “learnt it, took it home, validated it” and, in the process, went from “super sceptic to teaching people how to do it.” Nine years later his life is unrecognisable from what it was before. Pranic Healing aims to clear the blockages of prana (aka life force energy) and then funnel in fresh prana into the body. This new prana is “fuel to allow healing to take place”. With prana in balance, the body will do what it is designed to do – recover itself, heal itself. Anyone can learn and Pranic Healing supports recovery from a huge host of ailments. Check out David’s new 1 day Pranic Self Healing course online and see for yourself. David offers Pranic Healing treatments at his clinic in Dublin. Aloha House truly is the perfect place to hold space for healing and community.”

49 The Aloha Welcome A HOUSE OF BLISS. by Aisling Cronin

Those who experience a yoga retreat, meditation class or holistic treatment at Aloha House tend never to forget it. Aloha House is a tranquil, vibrant and comfortable holistic retreat centre and guest house. It is located in Killorglin, Co. Kerry – right in the heart of the scenic Reeks District – and run by husband-andwife team Brian and Louise McEvoy. Louise is an experienced yoga and aerial yoga teacher, who also teaches Lomi Lomi Hawaiian Massage. Brian is a superb cook, whose philosophy is ‘food is medicine.’ His healthy plant-based dishes are greatly appreciated by Aloha House guests! He and Louise take care to source local and organic ingredients wherever possible, and they also grow their own herbs and vegetables. Instant calm is inspired by the venue’s beautiful backdrop of the River Laune and world-famous McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range. During a recent chat I had with her, Louise described the very location of Aloha House as an integral part of its healing charm. ‘During our retreats, we allow people plenty of time to explore the nature that surrounds them

– this is a very powerful part of their overall experience.’ Aloha House truly is the perfect place to hold space for healing and community. They have a number of beautiful spaces available to rent, for anyone who wishes to host residential and non-residential treatments, courses, workshops and classes. The venue offers a range of accommodation and catering options, for up to fifteen people. Guests have access to a fully-equipped kitchen, chill-out lounge, reading room, sunroom and dining area. The gardens overlooking the river and mountains are a great place to ground. Aloha House have a number of yoga retreats coming up over the next few months, which sound like they will be blissful indeed! Different teachers will come on board, catering for all levels of practice, and leading attendees through styles like Iyengar, Restorative and Hatha Flow. ‘Aerial Yoga is another very popular type of yoga we offer during our retreats,’ Louise adds, ‘as it gives people the opportunity to experience something unique!’

The venue’s beautiful Namasté studio has been professionally rigged to the highest safety standards for Aerial Yoga, and has space for 10 students. In the evenings, guests are free to enjoy a bedtime relaxation and sound journey. Local teachers and facilitators offer a variation of yoga and meditation experiences, to add depth and variety to the weekend. ‘We love to provide our guests with a range of different experiences,’ Louise explains, ‘so that they can move through different ways of being, rather than just doing yoga all the time.’ Holistic treatments at Aloha House are provided by Louise and a local team of gifted therapists. Louise’s treatment portfolio focuses on Lomi Lomi Massage, Pregnancy Massage, Kua Lua Backwalking and Kambal Yoga One-to-One Meditation. Other holistic practitioners use the spaces at Aloha House to provide treatments like Rebirthing Breathwork, Reflexology, Reiki and Holistic Massage.

Sacred Creations THE JEWELLERY OF OKSANA UTKINA. by Aisling Cronin Oksana Utkina is a ceramic artist and jeweller who creates breathtakingly beautiful, soul-filled pieces of jewellery. Oksana’s proces is highly intuitive and spontaneous, led by the subtle stirrings of her spirit. Her journey began in summer 2018, when she began to have repetitive dreams involving crystals. ‘I would have dreams, over and over again, where people kept offering me pieces of citrine quartz,’ she explained when I spoke to her recently. ‘It still happens a lot: I dream about which crystal is needed in each piece. Quartz and black tourmaline are very popular, as they have clearing and grounding qualities that many people need right now.’ Oksana hadn’t expected to begin working with jewellery, but when she embraced this new calling, she found her previous experience with pottery very helpful. ‘I had already worked with clay for a long time,’ she told me, ‘so I had a natural ability in my hands when it came to working with crystals. My work is quite

meditative. I find that different streams of energy come through in each piece. Sometimes I channel Egyptian energy, sometimes it’s more cosmic or intuitive. Then I put the finished pieces up on my Etsy or social media, and different different people will be drawn to different things.’ For Oksana, her work is a reminder of our inherent magic. ‘We are multi-dimensional beings – this is what I want to express when I work with the stones, and I hope that those who wear the finished pieces will be reminded of that, every day.’ Oksana’s Facebook page is Mano Entonada, you can find her on Instagram @oksana.sacred.creations

Teatime Reflections THE ENDURING APPEAL OF A CUPPA. by Aisling Cronin Writers’ Companion Night gives way Slowly but surely To the song of passing birds The rumble of rush hour Running feet on the path below. I sit in silence (desk at the ready, pen in hand) And take a moment To enjoy Steam Aroma Taste. Froth breaks against my lips.

Leafing Through Leafy days Bring colder comforts: A crackling fire, A retreat from the storms, A cup of liquid gold.

“The process of making my morning brew is a beautiful mindfulness practice for me.”

52

I wrote these two poems about a year ago, back when my long-established lifestyle of working from home still seemed unusual to my office-job pals. I had, for several years, been in the habit of sitting down at my desk, devoid of makeup or formal clothing, often cocooned in a comforting blanket as the colder days drew in. The morning cuppa was always an integral part of my ritual. I’ve always leaned towards herbal teas over black, but the specific type would vary depending on my mood. Peppermint. Red berry. Jasmine. Chamomile. Ginger and lemon. These were the tastes I savoured, as I paused and listened to the distant roar of rush hour traffic outside my house. Before plunging into any particular task for that day, I would allow myself to sit with my tea … and just be. Things have changed since I wrote those two little poems. I’ve moved away from the city centre, I no longer live alone, and rush hour isn’t so frenzied any more, as working from home has become a way of life for many. However, the process of making my morning brew still remains a beautiful mindfulness practice for me … as it does for many other people. I’ve been broadening my tastes lately to accommodate entirely new flavours: House of Tea’s white grapefruit Kombucha Brew and Three

Spoons’ Digestion Wellness herbal tea have become firm favourites. There is something wonderful about taking a few minutes to sit with a humble cuppa, savouring the feast for the senses that it offers. Irish people have long believed that any dilemma can be solved with a cup of tea! I believe that this has something to do with the calming qualities of the tea leaves themselves, and something to do with the sense of being heard, understood and unconditionally accepted when we sit down with someone close to us and talk things out. There is a great deal to be said for the time-honoured tradition of sitting around a kitchen table with our nearest and dearest, enjoying our favourite brew and putting the world to rights. Few experiences can warm the heart like this simple pleasure. Personally, whenever I really want to sink into a state of great peace, I reach for ‘I am’ – the root chakra blend from Solaris Tea’s beautiful BeBetter Chakra range. One thing I deeply appreciate about Solaris Tea is the emphasis they place on bringing mindfulness into every tea-drinking session. They advise treating it as a ritual or ceremony, taking the time to nourish yourself, however busy your day might be. Long live the everhumble and always restorative cuppa!

Thrive On THE DOCUMENTARY WITH AN EMPOWERING DREAM. ‘THRIVE I’ was an acclaimed documentary that explored the global consolidation of power … and more importantly, presented its viewers with constructive, inspiring solutions. This documentary weaved together some exciting breakthroughs in science, consciousness and activism, offering bold strategies for reclaiming our lives and our future. ‘THRIVE II: This Is What It Takes’ brings viewers behind the scenes with the people and inventions that have the power to transform life for all inhabitants of our planet. This follow-up documentary unpacks the strategies, the science, and the principles that underlie some potent solutions in energy, health, consciousness, and non-coercive self-organising. ‘THRIVE II’ unveils an emerging coherent theory of the “Unified Field” and all that it implies. The production team behind THRIVE II believe that there is scientific and spiritual evidence that we are part of an infinitely alive, interconnected cosmos. Their view is that this web of interconnectivity is organised according to knowable energy dynamics, and that aligning with this patterning will allow us to access its infinite potential for physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and interpersonal transformation. The

principles that we need to practice to do this can be applied to expanding consciousness, non-coercive selforganising, accessing clean electricity, preventing and curing illnesses and more.

“The filmmakers’ vision is simple: to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.” They have asked themselves – given the evidence that there are solutions, in every sector, ready to restore our beloved planet and support a thriving civilisation – “What is in the way of our living in this state of abundance and peace?” The conclusion they’ve reached is that the main obstacle is humanity’s widespread belief that drastic positive change is not possible, and that we need to abdicate our authority to others. The filmmakers’ vision is simple: as the title suggests, they want to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. They hope to educate and

empower people to tap into their innate potential. They hope that this, in turn, will inspire people to help empower others and create lasting change. They say: ‘we explore sovereignty and what it means as individuals to claim authority over our own lives. We describe how this relation to ourselves and to each other is based on the same principles as the unified field - operating seamlessly at every scale. We’re not alone in this. We are profoundly connected. Science and spirit both show that now.’ Inspiring trans-political, grass roots, decentralised solutions, ‘THRIVE II’ puts forward practical tools for reclaiming authority over our lives. From new sources of energy to breakthrough health cures, ‘THRIVE II’ provides the insights and resources needed for viewers to take next steps in accessing and supporting the solutions that can truly create a world that works for everyone. We are hosting a Positive Nights event with the makers, Kimberly Carter Gamble and Foster Gamble, in October. A full interview with them will appear in our next Winter issue. mobility medicine THE AMATSU WAY TO FREE UP MOVEMENT. by Alison McEvoy in conversation with Carole Douglas Amatsu is a truly holistic body treatment, originating in Japan. It gently works through muscle and ligament imbalance within the body. Clients typically present with back, neck or shoulder pain and, in fact, practitioners aptly refer to a treatment as a ‘balance’. Most of us suffer with lack of mobility in some shape or form. Often, we learn to live with that restriction, and it isn’t until the real pain sets in that we seek help. Hours spent holding babies at night, curled over your laptop, seated in the office chair or folded into your car seat...leave us holding unnecessary tension. Take a moment now; sit down, inhale, hold the breath for a moment, and exhale it out again. Repeat this a few times, drawing your awareness inwards. Start to ‘look’ around your body, from your toes through the hips, shoulders and into the head. Do you feel any discomfort? Did you know that was there? For me, my neck and upper back shout at me clearly with a loud “hey!” Carole Douglas, a passionate Amatsu practitioner and teacher, spoke to us recently about what Amatsu offers us; “Amatsu is a movement orientated treatment in which we aim to release restrictions and bring back natural, relaxed movement to the body. Once structural balance is aligned, normal blood and lymph flow is restored, and any stress on internal organs from misalignment can be released. The body is freed up to function optimally.” Carole turned to Amatsu after a long career “doing crazy things with horses”. She ended up with a serious neuralgia-type pain in her head which ended with a spell in hospital. After finding Amatsu and having about 4 sessions she was well on the road to

recovery. “My neck had been locked for several years – Amatsu totally changed my life and has been my passion ever since”. “Amatsu practitioners hand back control to you. We help and support you, we go ‘upstream’ to find the source of the problem and hand you back your health. We aim to empower you to work with us to embrace and return to a fully active life”. During an Amatsu session, which lasts 45-60 minutes, the practitioner looks for the source of pain, rather than simply treating symptoms. The gentleness of the technique means it is suitable for everyone, from newborns - who can benefit greatly from the emphasis on craniosacral balance - to the elderly, who can be in particular need of mobility medicine. At any stage in life, Amatsu helps the body to open up to its full potential for health, movement, freedom and ease. “The Amatsu Association of Ireland is proud to have, as president, William Doolan, one of the original sources of Amatsu in the West. William learned directly from Dr.Masaaki Hatsumi, the head of the original Japanese school.” Training with the Amatsu Ireland Training School is a wonderful way to delve deeper into this time-honoured healing technique. Paul Hand, another of the original sources of Amatsu in the West, is here in Ireland, teaching this two year course which is followed by a postgraduate training. On the Amatsu Ireland website, you will find the Amatsu community – a host of practitioners around the country. A great place to begin your journey back to ease of movement, Amatsu awaits you! amatsu-ireland.com

the future of

healing:

the bemer KEEP YOUR BLOOD IN MOTION. by Alison McEvoy When technology is developed in service of human health and wellbeing, the results can be truly amazing. BEMER is an acronym for a piece of electrical equipment which has been scientifically shown to help improve blood flow. This might sound simple enough However, the ramifications of being able to support the body’s flow of blood can be quite astounding. Every single body has been equipped with a heart, the essential organ of blood flow. The heart continues its relentless work, night and day, from birth till death, pumping and pushing oxygenated blood around the body. It pumps blood through a vast network of blood vessels which service every single cell in the body; bringing nutrients and oxygen on their way in, and taking away waste products, like lactic acid and carbon dioxide, on their way out – back to the heart. When we breathe in, we breathe in the oxygen which the lungs transfer into the blood stream to be spread around to all our cells. When we breathe out, we breathe out the waste which the blood stream has transported back to the heart and out through the lungs. It’s an intricate, intelligent system which works well,

especially when we are young and healthy.

“Movement is medicine, as all of life is a flow.”

The heart, as a pump, is extremely forceful. To get to the far reaches of the body, and back again, it must pump blood through a trail of vessels which is 75,000 miles long. These vessels also play their part in helping the blood to flow and carry out its essential work of keeping all the cells of the body vital and serviced. They contract and relax rhythmically (aka vasodilation), helping to keep the blood moving along to those far-to-reach places, through smaller and smaller vessels, farther and farther away from the heart. You get the picture... With age, a poor diet, lack of time to exercise, lack of sleep or injury, these vaso-contractions occur less and less. Healthy, nutrient and oxygen rich blood does not get to reach the places that need it, and waste products can build up. In such a scenario, BEMER aims to help. Non-invasive, non-chemical, BEMER is a device which can be used at

home, or in a clinical practice, to improve the flow of blood. When the force of the heart needs help, this device has been shown to improve the vaso-motion - the contraction and release of the blood vessels – bringing about improved microcirculation of blood into the smallest of vessels. Movement is medicine, as all of life is a flow. Time is in continuous flow and living requires a continuous stream of oxygen, food and water to be supplied to the body. The health of our cells requires the continuous motion of blood to and fro, to and fro, from the heart. Where our motion is restricted, by ill health or injury, it is of the essence that the flow is restored. BEMER is a technology aimed at supporting the flow of blood, the flow of life. BEMER is being used all over the world. You can listen to people and clinicians talk about it, from Canada to India, in all kinds of settings and uses. Check it out for yourself ! HEALING WITH BIOKINESIOLOGY. by Alison McEvoy

60 I spoke with Elma Murphy recently, a knowledgeable lady who has been practising “kinesiology with the emphasis on the body’s chemistry, the therapy now called Bio-kinesiology” for the past twenty years. “Kinesiology found me,’ explained Elma. “I was completely burnt out … working in business. I went looking for nutrition to rebuild myself.” When she came across a kinesiology demonstration, Elma knew that what she had been looking for had found her. Kinesiology in itself has risen to great heights in the healing world. It is an in-depth conversation with the body wherein the body is given a voice. Muscle testing for strength (yes) or weakness (no) allows the practitioner to engage in a way that the body itself reveals what parts need healing, and also allows the practitioner to determine exactly what kind of nutritional and holistic support is required for that healing to occur. Our publisher, Paul, went to see Pippa, Elma’s colleague, for a BioKinesiology session recently: “I loved it. I love the feeling of bypassing the mind and asking the body, what’s going on? There is no more reliable source than your own body to tell you what it needs and doesn’t. The muscle testing process is very informative and you can feel your body go weak when it’s giving you a no, so you really feel your part in the process... I had to cut out some foods after and introduce some supplements my body was low on. I just love this feeling

of knowing what to give my body to get it rolling again.” Elma’s journey took her on a diploma course in kinesiology and, later, she began attending functional biochemistry/kinesiology seminars in London; “I learnt all about the body’s chemical pathways and how to test them.” The combination between kinesiology and biochemistry – aka bio-kinesiology – is a powerful one.

“Bio-kinesiology differs from other types of kinesiology in that it focuses mainly on the body’s chemistry. Bio-kinesiology is a therapy which aims to get to the root cause of the symptoms that a client is suffering. This is done using muscle testing, together with a knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body, how biochemical pathways in the body work, and with

“I love the feeling of bypassing the mind and asking the body, what’s going on?” nutrition. We use muscle testing to find which meridian is weak, thus indicating the area of the body that needs help. We then follow that chemistry pathway to determine where exactly the imbalance is and what nutrient will help bring it back to full strength.” “For example, the energy production pathway requires various nutrients at different stages. Someone could be feeling very tired and someone else could be absolutely exhausted – two different stages of that chemistry pathway, each needing different nutrients to get the pathway moving again. We do the same for the hormone pathway, liver detoxification etc.” These days, Elma runs a busy practice and also teaches two bio kinesiology courses which run side by side each year with her colleague Pippa O’ Gorman.

patterns, placement

and potential THE POWER OF ASTROLOGY. by Rachelle Hicks

I often refer to this phrase when describing astrology— “Astrology is not concretely predictive. It is symbolically predictive.” Astrology illuminates patterns. It reveals the deeper symbolism and interconnectedness of seemingly ordinary events. There is no placement or transit in astrology that is inherently good or bad. Any birth chart or astrological event is full of potential which can manifest in a myriad of ways. As we map our experience to these symbolic patterns, we can develop a renewed sense of personal authority. Astrology has the power to infuse within you a sense of being a co-creative participant in the dance of the Universe. The overall theme for 2020 is about deconstructing systems of power— big corporations, organizations, governments, system-wide norms etc. This year has the flavour of calling out the integrity, or lack thereof, in these systems of control. It asks a heavy question, “Is this system supportive, helpful and honest?” On a personal level, we might be investigating our own status quo systems and personal authority. It’s a good time to ask the questions: Am I living with integrity? Can I stand in my personal power without the need to control? Am I being authentic in all I create and express?

Can I let go of expectations and trust with my heart? Can I allow my softness to be my strength? There is a regeneration of both societal and personal authority which has to happen for a new creation to be born. This is an important reflection as we prepare for the headline event on December 21, 2020. Not only is this the winter solstice, the day of final descent into darkness (Northern Hemisphere) before transitioning to more light, but this day marks the end of a 200 year Earth cycle and the start of a new 200 year Air cycle. The astroterm for this is a Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 0 degrees Aquarius. Jupiter and Saturn are our social planets. They govern our desires to grow, expand, and reach beyond the horizon (Jupiter), with an awareness of integrity, responsibility and consequences (Saturn). Together they check and balance each other. Also during this time we have Mars, our

“Astrology has the power to infuse within you a sense of being a cocreative participant in the dance of the Universe.”

planet of action, vigor and spunk, in its home sign of Aries for a six month visit. Mars is smooth-like-butter in Aries. Since July, we may have felt a new whoosh of energy because Mars in Aries is so super clear, effective and energised. But this placement can also be prone to getting over-heated, impatient or burned out. Mars will be retrograding from September 9 - November 13, so we’ll have some time to assess how and where we use our energy. This contributes to the theme of personal integrity, as where we spend our energy is a reflection of who we are. Use your energy wisely. Mercury retrograde dates are October 14 - November 3, mostly in the sign of Scorpio. Remember, Mercury Retrograde offers opportunities to practice new ways of listening, responding, and moving through your day. Usually these lessons require us to slow down a bit so that we can listen deeply to what Mercury has to say. Each of the days and months left in this year are carriers of symbolically predictive patterns from the skies. It is our choice whether we tune in or not and accept the opportunities, possibilities and lessons which are ours for the taking! Rachelle is a Dublin based Astrologer. She has studied with Blue Rose and is currently enrolled in the four year Professional Astrologer’s Program at Astrology University.
