positively newsworthy GOOD NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. POSITIVELIFE.IE

1 The Wisdom of the Past ANCIENT SOLUTIONS TO MODERN PROBLEMS. by Alison McEvoy Scientists are beginning to open up to the ‘wisdom of the past’ as they meet with the limitations of their own realm, inside the laboratories. To this end, a new field of study has opened up recently by which scientists explore folk and traditional medicines for new ways to fight disease. This field is known as ethnopharmacology. Northern Ireland came under the telescope of a team of scientists from Swansea Medical School recently, when scientists set out to put to the test the folk medicines of the Northern counties. Traditionally, the soil of Northern Ireland was known by local peoples to have healing properties. Locals would wrap soil up in a compress, or cotton cloth, and use it to heal ailments such as toothaches or throat infections.

“scientists explore folk and traditional medicines for new ways to fight disease…” When scientists analysed the soil, specifically from Fermanagh, they found that it contained a previously unknown strain of bacteria that is effective in combating four of the top six superbugs (bugs that are resistant to antibiotics). This was a huge leap forward for science in their search for replacement anitbiotics. Professor Dyson of Swansea Medical School acknowledged that, “It seems that part of the answer to this modern problem might lie in the wisdom of the past.” Indeed, it is the wisdom of our Mother Earth, who has given almost every living element a healing capacity to bring about balance when we fall out of it. Just another reason to feel grateful for the life we have on this beautiful blue and green planet.

2 The Call of Duty LOVE COMES FIRST. by Alison McEvoy Mum, Jessica Donnahoo, is one of many women who dedicates her time to mothering her two children at home, while her husband is at work. In this traditional role, she is more often than not alone with her two children - the sole provider of their comfort and care. Her mothering is made that bit more complex by the fact that her son, Sailor, is blind and suffers from two rare brain defects. Sailor was having a particularly unsettled day. He hadn’t stopped crying all morning. Jessica was at a loss as to how to comfort her child when an unlikely father figure stepped through the doorway. Cable technician Kinney had arrived to fix their internet. No sooner had he entered

their home than Sailor ran up to him with his arms held out. Jessica watched as Kinney immediately scooped her son up in his arms and proceeded to comfort him for the next forty-five minutes while simultaneously fixing the internet. Sailor was almost asleep when Kinney left. Kinney answered the call of his heart and the call of duty that day, a lesson to us all.

Jessica snapped a photo in the meantime and posted on social media. She was overcome by the technician’s sensitivity and kindness, posting thanks and praise for this godsend into her day, saying, “This is more than customer service – it’s humanity at its best.”

“Kinney answered the call of his heart and the call of duty that day...”

3 The Forest Reawakens BRAZILIAN INITIATIVE REPLANTS 2 MILLION TREES. by Aisling Cronin Across the globe, an increasing number of environmental restoration projects are springing up, showing us exactly what is possible with faith, hard work and a lot of love. The Instituto Terra reforestation initiative – founded by Brazilian couple Sebastião Salgado and Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado – presents us with one shining example of how our future could look. Sebastião (a renowned photographer) and Lélia took over an old cattle ranch owned by Sebastião’s family in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais during the late 1990s. They were shocked by the devastation they witnessed: instead of the tropical paradise of Sebastião’s childhood memories, they found the trees cut down and the wildlife gone. Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in forest. Lélia suggested that they replant Sponsored by Staub Leadership International: Liberating the Purpose, Passion and Power of Individuals,Teams and Organizations since 1990

the forest: an ambitious initiative that ultimately met with astounding success. The Instituto Terra was established in 1998, and since then, the Salgados and their partners have successfully planted more than 2 million trees, totally transforming the environment. Sebastião says, “There is a single being which can transform CO2 to oxygen, which is the tree. We need to replant the forest. You need forest with native trees, and you need to gather the seeds in the same region you plant them, or the serpents and the termites won’t come. We need to listen to the words of the people on the land. Nature is the earth and it is other beings and us who need some kind of spiritual return to our planet.” institutoterra.org

positively newsworthy the little things 1D oing good is in the hands of the beholder INDISCRIMINATE KINDNESS. by Alison McEvoy I was in my family’s new home. I’d gone asleep and didn’t hear my mum’s calls when she asked if anyone was home. Out she went and locked the door behind her. The day before, the previous owner had showed up sheepishly at the door with her daughter. She had ordered shoes for her holy communion but had given the

wrong address, so they’d be coming here. I offered to call her when they came and arrange a pick up time. They’d arrived the next day and I’d texted her to come in an hour, figuring the doorbell would be a good alarm for my afternoon nap. Sure enough, the door bell song roused me. I fumbled my way down the stairs and vainly tried to open the door. I called out to her to go to the window – which I then couldn’t open. I went round the back, but couldn’t find the back door key. I could get the back window open, but she couldn’t open the side door as it was locked from the inside. Off she went and ten minutes later

2A rt From the Heart THE BLISS OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION. by Aisling Cronin

I spent a large portion of my childhood surrounded by sketchbooks, colouring pencils, paint boxes, brightly coloured chalks and a wide range of other art-related paraphernalia. The use of visual art to express my emerging opinions and feelings about the world around me was a huge part of my development. I’ve always loved to express myself through writing and poetry – these forms of creativity were also very important to

“Do good anyways. Do good always.” I miraculously managed to open the door. I walked the few blocks to her house with the shoes. She could not have been more grateful for this small kindness. You see, the house she had left behind was left in quite a state and I could have been annoyed with her. I wasn’t however. “Haz bien, y no mirar a quien” - I’d learnt it long ago on my travels and it always stayed with me. It means; do good for all. Do good without analysing the moral measurements of the other. Do good anyways. Do good always.

me during my childhood – but my love of visual art has receded somewhat in recent years. Some things cannot be expressed effectively enough in words. In the midst of a whole lot of events taking place in my life, I recently began to pick up my paintbrush and rediscover my love of art. I love transferring a deeply personal, heartfelt image from my mind’s eye onto a canvas, where it can be seen and felt and breathed into my being, as an integral part of who I am. In my creative space, I find my bliss. The paintings I’ve made lately are not for the eyes of the world – they’re just for me, as I work through some lessons my soul has wanted to impart. Could there be any greater bliss than picking up a paintbrush and letting your heart flow?

TELL US ABOUT A BLISSFUL MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHERE THE STARS ALIGNED AND YOU FELT ONE WITH EVERYTHING? Laura Gil

I could tell you many! But the one that changed my life 360 degrees was five years ago. I had no house, no job and no money. I had nothing but good friends who offered a place to sleep. I remember being grateful for every second of my days, for all the people I met and the lessons I learned. I experienced freedom in so many ways, but I didn’t want to go home. I believed there was something still to be done in this magic land. Two months after sleepless nights I decided to book my flight back home trusting I would ultimately miss the flight. The universe listened. I found a job two days before, and a house at the same time of my departure. Today I still remember the feeling of gratitude, support and oneness. I truly believe life is a blessing. When you know deep in your heart what you love and what you want, doors will open. Laura xx

Mark Cleary

David Gerulis

Working as a healer I have been privileged on many occasions to witness blissful moments. One springs to mind instantly. I was working in my clinic when a girl I had never met before walked in for an appointment. She told me she had a serious diagnosis of endometriosis and was told her womb and ovaries would have to be removed. She wanted to start a family and was desperate. I said let’s sit and hold space and see what we experience. When we finished Gina stood up and gave me hug with tears in her eyes. She went away shining and said she’d be in touch. Two months later she called to tell me she was pregnant. Today she has two healthy children and has gone on to become a Yoga Teacher and Healer. I think the stars are always aligned for us, we just have to pay attention.

My life was changed for good. Everything I’ve ever done has led up to this moment – to receive a gift from life itself. You could give it many names, but for me it was a return back home, back to me, to what I am. Deep meditative state took me right back to where it all started. It felt like everything in existence was made out of love. And I was love. I was That, the Universe itself, sharing glimpses of the infinite knowledge with myself in this other form. I got to see a fast-forward creation of our Planet and the answers to the questions I didn’t know I had. Bliss is a companion of my experience ever since. A feeling of being one with it all has never left. I say thank you, I repeat and I often stop and smile in awe. Thank you for all.

Nigel Miller Could you imagine what it would be like to experience a spiritual awakening? Now, I’m not sure exactly how you would recall that, extrapolating the most vivid of rewarding sensory information from all those ecstatic experiences you never knew you’ve had. But if you were to, do that, now, powerfully. For me, it was a time when I was in the infinite flow of creative abundance. Navigating through a beautifully cosmic hypnotic trance, transmuting the most powerful of universal concepts, the universal paradox. Your very own universe existing within you, as you are finding yourself existing within it. Now, the cosmic reflection of infinite clarity, cascading in waves of infinity loops. The particle, distant, yet not so far. Entanglement pulsing in perfect symmetry, aligned with the wonder of infinite intelligence. For me, it was the most blissful experience... Could you imagine the Journey Within?

anchor.fm/journeywithin

Nelly Hughes If I must pick one, it was the moment my Soul took over to reignite my Life-Force from within. Only now, seven years later, I see it was the most profound blissful moment. Back then, it certainly didn’t feel like bliss: more like death and rebirth at once, with a desperate need to rekindle in this earthy life like never before, with an ultimate appreciation for Life, Universe, and all beings, as well as all experiences – good or bad. Blissful moments have been endless since, inspired first by Reiki bringing about positive shifts in my life. My kids soon led me to become a yoga teacher, a practitioner of AYM, and recently, a Shiatsu Japanese Acupressure Therapist. Today, I share these powerful practices with those Souls desiring to reignite their own Life-Force.

Sarah Richardson Right now. This moment, exactly where I am, I’m feeling total and utter bliss. I say that with complete honesty. I began my journey as a midwife in a busy Dublin maternity hospital. I thought I was fulfilling my path: that was, until a voice shouted that I was meant to teach and empower women about spirituality and healing. When your intuition speaks like this, the easiest thing to do is push it away. Now, seeing clients daily for healing, teaching large groups of incredible light workers and seeing how they, too, are following their bliss: that is where my bliss comes from. Bliss comes from following your path, not anyone else’s. Bliss comes from being in the moment, totally and completely. Bliss comes from knowing you are in the right place, at the right time, supported by a wonderful tribe of people. How can I not feel bliss?

POSITIVE PARENTING

the gift of

listening APPRECIATING CHILDREN’S INGENUITY.

by Anna Cole

I am lying on my daughter’s new bed, watching the sun go down behind the houses on a long, bright evening, as Mother Earth turns on her axis once more to summer. Usually with some warm gentle nudges, I just about make the deadline for my parenting column for this life-loving magazine. But this issue – the Summer bliss issue – I bumped into some resistance and avoidance. It’s been a long season of winter in my being, that stretched her leafless limbs into the spring. My daughter will turn fifteen in a week. I first came across the Hand in Hand Parenting practices that steered my ship through the choppy waters of parenthood when she was two years old and her brother a newborn. The listening tools I learnt then still apply, but they’re different with older kids, and sometimes – more times than I’d like – in these past weeks, the pressures of overwork and underpay, the tension of a relationship with their dad stretched to breaking point, and the endless juggle of parenting and work commitments, have shaken me off the scent of the path of joy found in simple, playful connection with

my preteen son and teen daughter. Which brings me back to this bed: my daughter’s new bed, which we decided, after many years of child-sized bunk beds, to replace as her fifteenth birthday approaches. My daughter wanted to place her new bed at what I thought was an odd angle, against the ‘wrong’ wall, up against the window. It wasn’t ‘right’, that wasn’t the way the bed fitted best in the room at all, it was an awkward, silly way to arrange a room. It was my way or the highway! All this, I am pleased to say, was what I didn’t say. Not to her, anyway. Thanks to years of Listening Partnership time, I let myself fully feel my ‘righteous’ rigidity about my views on her room remodel, while practicing the skills learnt from years of Special Time. I consciously followed her lead, I leant into being delighted in her, and I practiced a medicinal dose of unannounced Special Time. This wasn’t a limit I needed to bring. This was her space. And here I am. I’ve walked in from work, my daughter and her brother are out watching a Marvel movie and I’m – unusually – home alone. The house is quiet. Her new bed is against the window,

positioned against the ‘wrong’ wall, and is bathed, unexpectedly from this angle, in late afternoon sunshine. I can hear the evening bird chorus singing melodically outside from here, I can watch the pink fairy-floss clouds float in the sky and I can feel the simple bliss of allowing my warm, unconditional loving attention – the hallmark of the listening tool of Special Time – light up both my life and my daughter’s, as I delight in her choices and creative thinking. Happy summer, sweet parents. If you want to find out more about the Listening tools and how they work with older kids, I highly recommend checking out our new self-guided course on preteens and older kids, by Hand in Hand Parenting’s Founder and Programme Director, Patty Wiplfer. POSITI V E AT TR ACTION

visualise your bliss RELEASE YOUR INNER RADIANCE. by Judith McAdam The onset of summer can trigger the subconscious in no small way, generally bringing us back with a bang to how we physically look. So, what can you do this summer to reveal your sassy nature while standing in your own power, expressing yourself with unbounded love and vitality? Your subconscious mind loves visualisation, so just for a minute, do this one with me. You can read this visualisation and record it on your phone, or listen to it on my website and YouTube channel. By practicing this often, you begin to form new loops in your subconscious mind: ones that open you up instead of closing you down. Get comfortable in your seat, close your eyes and listen to the ebb and flow of your beautiful breath… Let your breath bring you deep inside and slowly bring your attention to your root chakra at the base of your spine. This chakra is like a portal giving you access to Mother Earth. Visualise the colour red, then relax your tummy and perineum muscles, allowing your root chakra to open slowly. As you do, powerful roots begin to travel down through your legs and out through the soles of your feet. Let these roots penetrate the ground, finding their way to the bedrock. Visualise these roots wrapping themselves around huge healing crystals, drawing this vibrant crystalline energy up into your root chakra.

14

This energy continues to travels up to your sacral chakra below your belly button. See this chakra like a mystical orange door, opening to release sensual, creative energy. Breathe this energy into every cell in your body. See it spiralling and mingling with the red energy from your root chakra. On the energy goes, flowing vigorously into your solar plexus chakra. This yellow door gives way to powerful energy. Straighten your spine, relax your tummy muscles and allow this magnificent energy out. Say to yourself, “I am safe, I am secure, I am a creative, sensual, powerful being.”

“Stand in your own power, expressing yourself with unbounded love and vitality.” This mighty life force bursts forth into your heart chakra. Draw back your shoulders, allowing room for your heart chakra to expand with unconditional love. Vibrant green energy from your heart chakra begins to pulse upward toward your throat chakra. This magical blue door opens wide. Tilt your chin upward and allow your throat full expression filled with love. Breathe this energy into every cell, organ and gland in your body. Breathe it in. It is safe to express yourself through love.

On the energy goes, entering your third eye chakra above your physical eyes. The door of your intuition springs open, embracing the universe and all its secrets. Purple energy from this chakra travels up through your crown chakra. This is the portal connecting you to the universe. This translucent white energy releases itself from your crown, out toward the sky through the stratosphere, and into the vastness of space. Visualise drawing the energy of the planets, stars and moons down through your crown chakra, third eye, throat and heart, where it mingles with the energies of your root, sacral and solar plexus chakras. Put your hand on your heart. Know that You are safe, You are sensual and powerful, You are unconditional love, limitless, expressive, intuitive and You are where the Divine and Human meet. This is who you really are, so why not allow yourself to be truly radiant this summer, from the inside out? With love, Judith judithmcadam.com

POSITIVE HOME

reconnection ALIGN WITH YOUR HIGHER SELF. by Amanda Collins

16

Beloved, you are not separate from your higher self. You and your higher self are one. To know this deeply, it’s important to make time to connect. It takes just a few minutes to make that connection, and when you do so, you feel more deeply linked to yourself, your path and your inner wisdom. You feel bathed in unconditional love, in a place where everything feels peaceful, even during difficult times. Aligning with your inner purpose brings clarity about your path. You may feel as if your central self has finally been plugged into the right socket, and you just need to turn on the switch. Achieving this connection can then feel natural and become a daily habit, like brushing your teeth. This is because your higher self is your true self, your authentic spiritual self – the real you. This self ‘speaks’ to you through your intuition. Your higher self is the one who possesses your spiritual contract, the plan you made for yourself before you incarnated: your instructionsfor-life manual. Your higher self is pure consciousness that offers wisdom and guidance about where to go now and in the next moment. It offers you clear, certain knowledge that your thoughts and feelings are real and not mere defences or reactions coming from your ego, fears or old patterns. The more you connect to it, the more your higher self will reveal clear signs almost like a special code for you. You may see images or sacred symbols, experience coincidences and synchronicities, and hear or feel your higher self as a presence that gives you chills or tells you to breathe more deeply.

Like all of us humans, you may sometimes be disconnected from your higher self and instead see yourself as an inferior being, or harbour beliefs that block you from seeing the truth: that you are Spirit. When that happens, it’s time to reconnect. How to connect with your higher self: • Find a quiet place and sit comfortably in silence for a few moments. • Allow yourself to feel surrounded by a warm and loving energy, like a friend’s. • Gently close your eyes and turn inwards to your internal landscape. • Take a few full, deep breaths: inhaling fully, exhaling completely. • Allow yourself to drop into the present moment. • Visualise sending a cord down into the Earth, connecting with its energy. • Invite this energy back up from the Earth, into and through your body. • Become the observer, watching your breath rise and fall with no attachment. • You are seeing and experiencing the you who is your infinite self. Feel this infinite being as beautiful, present, amazing and loved unconditionally. • Feel this deep inner self integrate into your body, your heart and your mind. Your higher self is always there, ready and waiting for you to consciously plug in and connect to it. You are aware of it when you feel a deep sense of peace, alignment, integration and belonging. Allow these sensations to permeate your entire being.

HARNESSING YOUR INBORN POWER TO HEAL AND SUCCEED. by Sandy Newbigging Encountering a range of emotions is an intrinsic and inevitable part of being human, however much we may wish we could flick a switch and turn them off at times. Everyday we experience a spectrum of feelings, some comfortable and others less so. Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to have an unhealthy relationship with the more intense emotions, which is a core cause of much stress and struggle. Raised by adults unwilling to experience the full array of their own emotions, they would resist witnessing us expressing our feelings so fully and freely. As children we may have been encouraged to tone down or turn away from the intense ones that were perceived to be problematic. Not only that, it is common for children to be taught different names for the different emotions, with some labels being wrong. Based upon the misinformed assumption that some emotions are ‘positive’ and others ‘negative’, it is common to be conditioned to attempt to avoid the ‘bad’ ones at all cost. This conditioning has led to millions of us fearing certain emotions, habitually resisting and controlling them and engaged in a fruitless fight with their feelings. Believe it or not, one of the most common emotions that countless people mislabel and struggle with is joy. Growing up it is common to mislabel joy for fear, angst or anxiety and end up suppressing its transformative powers. I appreciate this is a rather radical suggestion to make, but if you struggle with emotions that you believe to be fear or anxiety, I invite you to explore relating to this powerful energy in a new way. Joy is the flow of inner-life-infused energy that exists within everyone,

18

which naturally rises up to help us. Joy is a powerful energy that arises within us whenever we want to heal or change something. However, as we believe we are feeling ‘negative’ emotions, we usually shy away from the emotion and in turn, don’t utilise the energy to help us to bring about the healing and life-success we want. Suppressing emotions lowers your energy and your ability to enjoy the best life. The more emotions you feel the better, as you need energy to heal, create and evolve. By letting go of the mind-made labels about emotional energies and allowing more intense emotions to be present within you with zero resistance, you can find that feelings you once knew as anxiety or fear have always been joy’s powerful presence. Joy is beyond the temporary highs of happiness. Although we are taught

“Believe it or not, one of the most common emotions that countless people mislabel and struggle with is joy.”

we need things to make us happy, joy is beyond mind-based reasoning. In the pursuit of happiness by fixing, changing and improving circumstances, many miss a glorious gift in being born human, which is to experience joy for no reason. Joy is ever-present to those willing to wake up to its ongoing presence. I’m not claiming that all feelings of fear or anxiety are always joy. However, I am saying that you want to heal your relationship with the more intense emotions that you believe to be fear or anxiety. And if you play with this liberating possibility that you are actually feeling the positive and transformative power of joy, then you can benefit greatly from improving your relationship with the full spectrum of emotions. Joy is the natural expression of life. It is the creative juice of the universe and if you use it rather than resist it, it can help you to heal your body and improve your life. Next time you feel an emotion that your mind wants to call ‘fear’ or ‘anxiety’, I invite you to see what happens if you welcome this potent force for good within you and let the energetic celebration of existence carry you on its wondrous wings. potential WHOLE HEARTED LEADERSHIP IS STEPS AWAY.

by Dusty Staub and Cliona O’Hanlon What exactly is required to fully be your best self ? To be a true, wholehearted leader in all you do? It’s an invitation to claim your deepest heart, realise your highest intentions, and courageously and persistently act from this place. The key to this state of being is liberating the purpose, passion and power not only within yourself, but also within the individuals, team members and organisation around you. It involves the willingness to immerse yourself in the fullness, bounty and grace of your being in the present moment. First, your planning, coaching and developmental work has to engage four fundamental factors: 1. Be strategic in scope and focus: clarify your core ‘why’ (purpose) in living and in your work place. 2. Be substantive, using hands-on, practical methodology and skills. 3. B e experiential, engaging people in active learning. 4. Be developmental, reinforcing, following-up and engaging sustainability. Second, engage in effective practices/ behaviours to give traction through tested action: 1. Listen interactively, using powerful follow-up questions and ensuring that others feel heard. 2. Engage and partner, by ensuring all are

strategically aligned with purpose and focused pathways. 3. F acilitate learning experiences by engaging active participation, reflection and action steps. 4. Build trust by eliminating any and all blame and shame. 5. Use ‘what’ and ‘how’ and ‘when’ questions: stop asking ‘why’ and ‘who.’ 6. Show up / take responsibility and model that in your interactions. 7. Build capacity through encouragement, behavioural feedback for appreciation and correction. 8. Draw the larger circle – focus on purpose and expand perspectives on what matters most. 9. Reinforce accountability – close performance feedback loops using an Intent-Behaviour-Results framework. We aim to blend Emotional Intelligence and Intellectual Quotient in an integrated,

holistic framework for developing powerful leadership at all levels. Our Heart of Leadership Framework consists of seven key drivers of leadership effectiveness, allowing you to analyse, diagnose and take meaningful action. One of those core drivers is courage. That, in turn, has been broken down into discrete Acts of Courage to enable individuals and organisations to assess where they are strongest and also most need development. This framework is outlined in Dusty’s bestselling book The 7 Acts of Courage:

Bold Leadership for a Wholehearted Life.

He also delivered a TED Talk in 2016 on the transformative power of Acts of Courage. Dusty and Cliona both lead from the heart, for more info go to staubleadership.com TED Talk Link https://youtu.be/U_lZGF6or4o Local Contact: Clionaohanlon@me.com 085-8282625

Mind Doctor RUBY WAX AND FRIENDS ON HAPPINESS. By Aisling Cronin

Ruby Wax has been well-known as as an actress, comedienne and television personality for decades, but in recent years, she began to develop an interest in mindfulness and mental health. Her own experience of depression led her to undertake deep research into these important topics, with the hope of helping others who were suffering too. In 2013, she earned a master’s degree in mindfulnessbased cognitive therapy from Kellogg College, Oxford. This was followed in 2015 by her appointment to the position of Visiting Professor in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Surrey. Ruby’s dedication to helping people improve their outlook on life has continued to grow ever since.

Ruby’s expertise on the topic of mental health was made clear in her 2018 book, How to Be Human. She combined her own experience and insights with those of Buddhist monk and meditation teacher Gelong Thubten, and neuroscientist Dr. Ash Ranpura. The book soon attracted glowing tributes from a wide range of luminaries. Author Neil Gaiman described the book as ‘one of the most fascinating, intriguing and informative books about minds and bodies and brains and mindfulness I’ve ever encountered’, while actress Joanna Lumley said, ‘How to Be Human is, without exaggeration, a lifeline; wise, practical and funny.’ Ruby’s passion for her subject matter is evident in every page. She wrote: ‘It took us 4 billion years to evolve to where we are now. No question: anyone reading this has won the evolutionary Hunger Games by the fact you’re on all twos and not some fossil. This should make us all the happiest species alive, yet most of us aren’t. What’s gone wrong? We’ve started treating ourselves more like machines and less like humans. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, we’ll still, fingers crossed, have our minds, which, hopefully, we’ll be able to use for things like compassion rather than chasing what’s

Gelong’s understanding of mindfulness has to do with learning how to let go. ‘It’s not about self-obsession: going within and obsessing over every single thought we have,’ he says. ‘It’s about being the silent observer that doesn’t get attached to all that. Let it all go by you, like clouds in the sky.’ Ruby’s comedy experience has contributed to her understanding of what makes the mind tick. In a conversation we had with her recently, she said, ‘when I’m talking about the subject of mental health, I have an instinct for when to be serious and when to lighten people up with a joke. When I start a talk, I find that there is a natural rhythm to it: a time to laugh and a time to be serious.’ Ruby’s sense of humour is evident throughout How to be Human. ‘There’s a sense of balance we sought to achieve in the book: I bring the comedy, the monk explains how the mind works, and the neuroscientist says, ‘this is where it all is.’

‘The book explains how addiction manifests itself in the brain,’ Ruby told us, ‘and there are techniques you can use to lower your cortisol and reduce your dependency on technology. We all use technology all the time, and it has become an addiction for a lot of people. You can learn how to step away from the computer: use it when you need to and put it away when you don’t. That takes discipline, but it is possible!’ Ruby’s warmth, practicality and wit makes How to be Human a joy to read. Hilarious anecdotes from Ruby’s own life are backed up by smart science and practical mindfulness exercises, making How to be Human ‘the only manual you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you’ve upgraded your iPhone.” rubywax.net

POSITIVE TANTR A

the light of

the sun within A SUMMER PRACTICE FOR LOVERS.

by Dawn Cartwright Each day Surya, the Hindu god of light and day, travels through the heavens in a chariot harnessed with seven horses. Ushas, the goddess of dawn, and Pratyusha, the goddess of dusk, ride with him. The seven horses represent the seven meters of Sanskrit verse, the poetry that creates the world. Ushas is the ‘life of all life’ and ‘breath of all breaths.’ Pratyusha is ‘light.’ Together they light up the sky and illuminate every living thing. Surya, in all his resplendent majesty, also rises in you, in the solar plexus, located just above the navel. Summer is the perfect time of year to cultivate solar energy in your body. In this practice, you’ll awaken the sun within you and, if you choose, channel that energy into your intimate connection with a lover. The night before, prepare a practice space in your home or in nature. Create a place in the sun, where you won’t be disturbed. This might be a mattress on the floor or a clearing out on the land. Begin your practice early in the morning, before the first rays of light. Close your eyes, connect with the energy in your body as it begins to rise like the sun. Sexual energy is often strongest in the morning. If you devote yourself to cultivating this energy as the sun rises, it will flourish throughout the day. Bring your awareness to your belly and pelvis, and open yourself to the sensations and feelings that are just waking up. Acceptance is the light that will gently allow these sensations to grow. Move closer, with your attention, to the warmth building inside as you open your senses to the world around you. When you’re ready, enter your practice space in silence. Lie down on

Yoga is a science based on understanding

life. There are many ways it can offer enlightenment. When Adya Yogi, the first yogi, offered these technologies, he offered them in 112 ways. He said, there are 112 ways through which a human can realise their ultimate nature. He trained seven disciples in advanced scientific methods for many years, and when his wife saw this, she asked him, ‘what about me? Why am I being left out?’ He asked her to come and sit on his lap. For a moment, she resisted because she felt he wasn’t taking her seriously enough, but he assured her that this was not what was happening. So she sat with him, their energies merged – it was as though he became half man and half woman, and so did she – and through that, she experienced direct enlightenment. For some people, he went through elaborate explorations of science or technology that took decades, and for other people, he went through direct energy transmissions. To others, who were like extensions of his own being, he said, ‘don’t bother striving for enlightenment. Just be here with me. That’s all.’ It was all about people’s different levels of evolvement and intuition. So that is why, for me, the yogic path can include many different ways of achieving enlightenment. How would you describe your mission? What does the name ‘Sadhguru’ mean? ‘Sadh’ means ‘from within.’ This is not a title, it’s more of a description. Think of how there are different types of doctors – if you have a dental problem, you go to a dentist, if you have an eye problem, you go to an optician. In the same way, ‘sadh’ means a guru whose direct experience comes from within, so you go to him if

you want to know something about the inner world. You wouldn’t go to him if you wanted to know something about astrology, or about scripture. There are other gurus for that – other teachers who can explain those things better. My mission is to help expand people’s understanding of their inner experience.

“Inner Engineering is offered as a technology: you don’t have to agree with it or disagree with it. You don’t have to ‘worship’ it.” Could you talk a bit about relationships? Our ideas of romantic love often revolve around it being able to solve all our problems, but for many of us, it actually doesn’t. Do you have any thoughts on this? A human being has needs: physical needs, psychological needs, social needs … and we often attempt to meet all of those needs through other people. There was a time when the financial need of a woman had to be handled through a relationship with a man. That still happens. It’s only changing now. Socially, also, a hundred years ago there was no way a single woman could simply exist in the world – she would end up being hitched to somebody, and that’s just the way things were done. This is only the second generation where we’ve had women able to fulfil their social and

30

financial needs themselves. This is a good thing: people should be able to consciously decide which needs they want to fulfil or not. Take the physical need, for example: people often find that when they’re highly intellectually engaged in something, that need fades into the background and doesn’t have a strong influence in their life anymore. It is all about asking yourself, which need do I want to fulfil? Do I need another person? How would you describe your vision for the world? My vision is based on helping others to realise their true nature. When you find yourself in a position where your work – your thoughts, your emotions, your decisions – are able to influence many, many people, then you must equip yourself with tools that enable you to carry out that job well. If your work is important, you need to work on yourself. We have reached a point in the world where business leaders are starting to have a lot of influence. When you look back at human history, thousands of years ago, religious leaders were the people with the highest influence in society, but as the world’s military machines became more organised, our military leaders became more significant. As democracy has established itself, our democratically elected leaders have become more prominent. What we will see, in 20 to 25 years’ time, is that business leaders will become more prominent: they are the ones who will decide everything on this planet. Right now, the business leaders have an albatross hanging around their neck. Everyone thinks business leaders are ‘out

to get you’: just wanting something for themselves and not caring about other people. This is what I’m trying to change with my work: to mould these leaders from personal ambition to a larger vision. Our programs have been implemented in many businesses across India, and many governmental departments also. This Inner Engineering technology has worked with a lot of business leaders in the country, and as a result, they’re crafting their businesses in a different way. It’s a big world, with many people in it, and it’ll take time for significant change to happen. But in about 20 to 25 years, you will see business leaders talking about larger interests in the world, rather than how profitable their businesses are. SADHGURU ON FREEDOM The moment you use the word ‘freedom’, you must understand that freedom has consequence. Freedom is a result of responsibility. Out of responsibility, freedom will come. Freedom does not mean that I can do whatever I want with you. Freedom means I can be with you the way I want, within myself. The energies we set in motion can function beyond human will. When I pass away, the work I have set in motion will continue on. Sadhguru’s Inner Engineering program is available online – just visit isha.sadhguru.org to access the program and learn more about it. He is due to visit Dublin in October. The exact details are yet to be confirmed. Keep an eye out for the information on his site!

POSITIVE SUPPLEMENT

aging gracefully WHAT BETTER CIRCULATION CAN DO. by Alison McEvoy Improved mental skills and warmer hands and feet are some of the benefits that follow in the wake of improving your circulation with ginkgo biloba. As the aging process sets in, you will discover how it affects you in many different ways. With help from a plant extract called ginkgo biloba, you may be able to slam the brakes on this and perhaps even restore functions that are not working properly. The key to the amazing potential of this remedy, which has become one of the most widely used supplements among the elderly, is its two active components that dilate blood vessels and make blood more fluid. The result is better circulation and a substantially better supply of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to all parts of the body. Can you imagine what that means for your health? Here are some examples: A boost to the brain Your brain accounts for 20-25% of your entire oxygen consumption. That is quite a lot, considering the relative size of the brain. Cognitive skills like memory and concentration require a good supply of blood, which is directed to the brain via the two carotid arteries that are situated on sides of the neck. As we age these arteries tend to clog up, slowing down our ability to recollect, read, concentrate and reason but ginkgo biloba can improve the skills notably. Some studies have even shown that ginkgo biloba can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease.

32

Warm hands and feet Your hands and feet – also known as ‘extremities’ because of their remote location – most certainly depend on a good supply to function properly and stay warm under most conditions. People with poor circulation (this is often the case with elderly individuals) experience problems with cold fingers and toes but taking ginkgo biloba can increase the temperature in hands and feet within a very short time and is therefore an ideal treatment.

“The result is better circulation and a substantially better supply of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to all parts of the body.”

No more leg pain Some people suffer from what is known as intermittent claudication. In common terms this is known as walking-induced leg pain and can be rather painful and unpleasant. Researchers have demonstrated how taking ginkgo biloba can reduce such leg pain. Again, it is the improved blood supply that is accountable for the positive effect. A cure against tinnitus Some people with poor circulation experience tinnitus, which can be either a high-pitched or low-frequent noise in one or both ears. It can be most annoying and in many cases sufferers of this condition find that it reduces their quality of life. Ginkgo biloba can help by improving the flow of blood to the brain. Dizziness and headaches A poor blood supply to the brain may also cause problems such as dizziness and headaches. Again, taking ginkgo biloba may offer help and is worth trying, as it is harmless and may provide relief. This fantastic gift from mother nature is a wonderful accompaniment to the process of aging, keeping all regions of the body well supplied with the oxgyen and nutrients they need. pharmanord.ie

Speed up your blood flow Ginkgo biloba is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to alleviate the symptoms of poor blood flow in conditions such as cold hands and feet. It is essential that you choose a preparation with a documented content of active compounds.

Warm hands and feet again One of the most convincing tests of ginkgo biloba’s ability to improve circulation in the hands is conducted with a thermographic camera. After the test person had taken ginkgo biloba, his hands became significantly warmer in the minutes right after they had been cooled down in very cold water.

Your bloodstream carries oxygen and nutrients to every single part of your body – from head to toe – to ensure that all your body functions work properly. However, the flow of blood through the smallest capillaries can decrease for various reasons, and that may cause problems like cold fingers and toes. 35° C 30° C

Cold hands and feet?

This problem may be a result of having poor blood circulation, and the solution could be tablets with ginkgo biloba. Every inch of the body depends on a wellfunctioning blood supply that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells. As we humans age, our blood circulation becomes less efficient, leading to problems like cold hands and feet.

Supports your blood circulation It stands to reason that ginkgo biloba is so popular among older people. The active compounds in the extract dilate your blood vessels, helping your blood to flow more easily through them.

IE_Biloba_Ad_PositiveLife_210x297_0419

What is ginkgo biloba? Ginkgo biloba is a plant extract made from the leaves of ginkgo biloba, an ancient temple tree that is also known as maidenhair tree. The extract contains a variety of biologically active compounds. Two specific compounds – ginkgoflavone glycosides and terpene lactones – are particularly well-documented and have been shown to support good blood circulation and good cognitive function. Today,

thanks to scientific research that has delved into the underlying mechanisms of these active ingredients, it is possible to manufacture high-quality extracts that deliver the exact same amount of active compound with each tablet. Ginkgo-Biloba Pharma Nord represents this new generation of pharmaceutical-standard ginkgo biloba products that have become increasingly popular, namely among the elderly.

Ginkgo-Biloba Pharma Nord has a high content of active compounds: The high content of active compounds makes it possible to obtain the desired effect with 1 tablet twice a day. Traditional herbal medicinal product used to alleviate the symptoms of poor blood flow in conditions such as cold hands and feet, exclusively based upon long-standing use. Always read the leaflet.

GOOD LIFE 2.0

awaken hope IMAGINING THE ELEMENTS OF HOPE. by Davie Philip “Imagination is the ability to look at things as if they could be otherwise.” John Dewey

The Chinese phrase, “May you live in interesting times” has never been truer, as we are now faced with climate breakdown, inequality, soil loss, species extinction and the ongoing destruction of ecosystems. Many say we are out of time and now must prepare for an inevitable collapse. I think we are ill-prepared to cope with the emerging challenges, but I also think it is irresponsible to declare definitively that it is too late. Do we have enough time to make the transition to a world that works? I’m really not sure, but as no one can predict the future, for me it is game on – not game over. This is an incredible time to be alive. There is still time to act. People often need a strong dose of hope to be spurred to action. This hope has to be active, not passive. It is something you do, not just something you have. Probably the biggest barrier to us taking action is our inability to creatively envision a fair and sustainable future.

“Hope has to be active, not passive. It is something you do, not just something you have.” In his new book From What is To What If, Rob Hopkins argues that we do have the capability to effect dramatic change, but we’re failing because we’ve largely allowed our most critical tool to languish: human imagination. In his new publication, which is due out this autumn, he asks, “What if we could find a way to be bold, brilliant and decisive, to act in proportion to the challenges we are facing, to aim for a future we are excited about?” For me, this hope is embodied in the many community-led initiatives emerging across the world that are pioneering change at the local level. These include community energy initiatives, co-housing neighbourhoods, co-working

spaces, car clubs, digital fabrication labs and community supported agriculture projects. Based on ecological and human values, these social innovations are building community and transforming local economies. These pioneers are still outliers, operating on the margins of society and well below the radar of policy makers and mainstream media, but they are demonstrating that democracy and economic life can be radically reimagined from the bottom up. They highlight values of altruism, empathy and solidarity, and practices such as sharing, collective ownership and local resilience. On the 29th of June, I will be hosting a conversation with Rob Hopkins and Lorna Gold at the Elements of Change festival in Cloughjordan. This one-day, family friendly gathering – which you can get to by train from Dublin – will reimagine how we respond to the climate emergency we face, and showcase the many regenerative and resilient initiatives that any community can adopt. Davie Philip is a community catalyst at Cultivate, the sustainability cooperative based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, and a network weaver with ECOLISE, the European network for communityled initiatives on climate change and sustainability. cultivate.ie

POSITIVE MEDICINE

ditch the diet

way of thinking

Herbalist and CNM Lecturer Colleen Kennedy encourages you to think ‘way of life’ when it comes to your health. Welcome to the age of diet overload! Everyone and anyone is becoming the latest ‘expert’ on food and fitness. It’s a minefield out there in cyber world, on the bookshelves and in our health food shops and pharmacies. How do we know what to eat any more? Why are we not listening to our own instincts on what suits our bodies? Biochemically we are not all the same, so surely we shouldn’t all be eating the same diet. Even a pre-conceived purist diet may support rather than counteract an imbalance in the body. While the science of some of these diets can appeal to certain sectors of the population, a good start is to begin to understand your own unique biochemical makeup in an ever-changing environment: your ‘constitution’. The art of being able to adapt to your surroundings and to use your foods to rebalance and support your essence, dates back to the Traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic Medicine systems. Both of these cultures use a system of energetic and constitutional analysis. How our body responds to particular foods, activities and emotions and how we interact with other living organisms, all play a role in determining the best way to bring balance back to our lives. And as we are constantly bombarded with what’s bad or good, or every new fad and trend, we are removed from tuning in to our own signals. The Chinese work off a system of Yin, Yang and the five elements. The Ayurvedic

36

model is based on the tri-dosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Both systems understand how food and herbs can interact with our physical and psychological processes. To simplify this, I will focus on the Ayurvedic tri-dosha concept, and summarise the three types with food energetics. 1. Vata (Air): The Vata person is prone to neurological disorders, coldness and dryness. Foods and herbs that have a cold, dry and rough quality will aggravate Vata.

“True nourishment is both how we receive and how we transform our food.”

Dry crackers, raw vegetables, dried fruit and beans should be limited. Vata needs warm, moist nourishing food, with a sweet energy such as complex carbohydrates and root vegetables. Fruit like bananas, avocados and sweet fruit like peaches and berries are good, as are oils, nuts and seeds. Ginger, cinnamon, cumin and black pepper are all good herbs to use for Vata constitutions.

2. Pitta (Fire): Pitta is prone to heat, inflammation, acidity and thirst. Foods that are warming, sour, spicy and salty are to be avoided in high Pitta conditions. Cooling, sweet, bitter and astringent foods are beneficial to balance Pitta. White meat and fish are better than red meat. Sweet and bitter vegetables like leafy greens, cabbage, sprouts, cucumbers and asparagus and herbs like coriander, mint, fennel and turmeric are favourable. 3. Kapha (Earth); Kapha is prone to mucustype diseases; colds, congestion, oedema and arthritic disorders. Kapha can put on weight easily. Mucus-forming foods like dairy, fats, cold foods and excessive sweet and salty food will aggravate Kapha. Warm, spicy, bitter, astringent foods that are dry in nature will benefit Kapha. Use rye and millet, all leafy green vegetables, stewed apples, white meat, all beans except kidney beans. Limit refined grains, white rice, wheat, beef, seafood, avocados, bananas, oranges, grapes and salt. Chilli, ginger and pepper are useful to

CNM

disperse the dampness and congestion in Kapha. Since people are a combination of these types (usually one is more predominant), and may have other considerations and sensitivities to contend with, it’s a good idea to get a full consultation with a Naturopath, who can fine tune your plan to suit you. There is an art to adapting these energetic models with our functional medicine model, and this is where the true uniqueness of treatment lies. Simple approaches to a better food life begins in simple preparation and combinations and in taking into consideration a few easy practices: * Eat moderately until you are almost full, then stop! * Avoid drinking large amounts during the meal, so as to enhance enzyme activity * Chew slowly and well * Reduce refined sugars which can cause fermentation and bloating * Avoid eating on the run or when

stressed * Enjoy your food! * Remember to move. Exercise is key to a happier food life. True nourishment is both how we receive and how we transform our food. So we could be eating the ‘best diet’ but still not feeling great. Guilt about eating certain foods will do nothing to enhance the digestion of that food, and will probably make it worse. So it’s a good start to try these simple approaches, tune into your constitution and start connecting to the types of food that suit you best. Visit a Naturopath, Herbalist or Nutritional Therapist for a full consultation to help get you back on track. POSITIVELY ORGANIC

lettuce eat THE ART OF EATING LETTUCE.

by Hans Wieland

The next time you eat your lettuce, here are some interesting questions for you: When is the best time to eat lettuce, or does it even matter? Do you eat your lettuce before a meal as an appetiser? Do you eat your lettuce with the main meal or do you eat your lettuce after the main course? Do you eat your lettuce in a green salad, or does your salad contain more than just green leaves? Lettuce is not only one of the most exciting vegetables to grow: it is also one of the most popular ones, consumed all over the world. Thirty years ago, iceberg lettuce was the only show in town, but there are now many different varieties of lettuce available. With the revival of the growit-yourself movement, many have now become household names. Home grown lettuce is far superior to shop bought lettuce, as the time between harvesting and eating is often only minutes! Important note: lettuce seeds germinate at surprisingly low temperatures. Germination is often inhibited above 22° Celsius.

Variety does matter – The story of Till and Roger Lettuce (lactuca sativa) belongs to the compositae family, like endive (cichorium) or dandelion (taraxacum). Today, there are four basic types of lettuces: butterhead, crisphead, cos (the hearting types) and loose leaf. Cos is sometimes referred to as romaine. The forerunner of the crisphead type is the Batavia type, and there is also Celtuce, the stem lettuce favoured in Asia. About 10 years ago, during Biodiversity Week in May, I visited national schools with a presentation entitled: The story of Till and Roger – Why varieties matter! Two lettuces, Till (an arrowhead shaped

loose leaf type) and Roger (a fast growing Batavia style variety with crunchy leaves) had fallen in love with Roxy, a voluminous red butterhead. In the end, she chose Roger, the looser Batavia type, due to its superior taste and better resistance to bolting.

lettuce by hand, tearing the leaves apart or twisting the head from the roots. Cutting with a knife or scissors destroys the cellular structure, causes the lettuce to brown, go limp faster, to oxidise and loose nutrients!

Answers to our initial questions? The moral of the story was to illustrate that there is so much more to lettuce than the common iceberg or bland Dutch varieties. I still remember the time when some of us organic growers in the late 80s argued for hours about the best composition of mixed salad bags, with regard to the taste and flavour of the leaves, their size, their colour, their texture and how long they would keep. Butterhead types would provide a smooth buttery texture with subtle flavours. Crispheads would add a crunchy texture, and cos types a slightly bitter flavour. Loose leaf lettuces and bay leaf mixes would add colour and spiciness.

Lettuce - A powerhouse of nutrients Lettuces are very rich in nutrients, due to the fact we eat them raw! Lettuce contains vitamins A, C and E, and is therefore high in antioxidants. It is also a great source of iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Crisphead varieties are a bit of a dud when it comes to vitamin and mineral content. They are also higher in sugar. Romaine/cos varieties are a great choice and one of the healthiest of all the lettuces. They excel in the vitamin and mineral departments and provide ten times more beta-carotene than crisphead lettuces. Little Gem and Brune d’Hivier are the top varieties. Green leaf varieties are a solid runner-up: low in fat and sugar and high in protein. The darker the green or red leaves, the higher they are in nutrients. Harvesting Tip: It is always best to harvest

A research study in 2012 demonstrated that eating a salad before the meal increases one’s vegetable consumption by 23%. We basically eat more vegetables that way. There are two reasons why Italians eat salad after the main course. The dressing in Italy is generally made with extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar or wine vinegar, and salt and pepper. The main course is often accompanied by a wine, so Italians do not want the acidity of the vinegar to compete with the acidity of the wine. I believe eating lettuce or a salad before the main course stimulates your digestive system. The bottom line is: Eat lettuce every day, at whatever time is most convenient for you. Use a good dressing and don’t dress your lettuce until the very last minute before serving. The vinegar ‘cooks’ the lettuce, making the leaves less crunchy.

“Thirty years ago, iceberg lettuce was the only show in town, but there are now many different varieties available.”

39 Gaby Wieland’s favourite salad dressing: This recipe is based on a recipe my late mother-in-law used in lots of salads. I use honey instead of sugar and rice milk instead of cow’s milk or cream, and different types of oil and vinegar. 4 tbsp organic extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp organic sunflower oil (or use only olive oil) 1 tbsp organic cider vinegar 1 tbsp organic balsamic vinegar 1 heaped tsp honey 1 tsp mustard Sea salt Pepper (optional) Little rice milk, milk or water Put all ingredients in a screw top jar and shake until well mixed. Happy eating! Hans Wieland has worked and taught at The Organic Centre for over 20 years. He has now ‘retired’ to Neantog Kitchen Garden School in Cliffoney, joining his wife Gaby Wieland, herbalist and naturopath. The couple offer a range of courses and workshops in food growing, foraging, cheese-making, healthy cooking and baking. neantog.com

GO PICNIC CRAZY.

by David and Stephen Flynn of The Happy Pear

As the prospect of long summer evenings stretches out before us, it’ll soon be time to shake the dust off your picnic blanket. Nothing beats the taste of good food melting in your mouth as warm rays of evening sunshine cloak your shoulders. Here are a few gems from the happiest fellas in the world that can be worked into a creative picnic‌ SWEET POTATO FRITTERS Super tasty, sweet and savoury, these make for a fab picnic centrepiece. These little beauties are crispy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside! Quick to make, they last three days in the fridge but you will definitely eat them before that!!

Yields 18 fritters 1kg sweet potatoes 1 red chili 2 cloves garlic 150g peas 1 red onion 1 can of cooked chickpeas 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp cumin seed 2 tsp cumin seed

1/2 tsp pepper 1 tsp salt 3 tsp tamari Juice 1/2 lemon

For the batter: 100g gram flour 200ml water Pinch salt Pinch of black pepper

METHOD: 1 Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Clean and chop the sweet potato into small cubes. On a baking tray bake for 30 mins. 2 Finley chop the chili, garlic and red onion. 3 Once the sweet potatoes are baked, put in a large bowl and add the rest of the

ingredients with the exception of the peas. Using a potato masher mash all ingredients until well mixed. Add the peas and gently mix trying to keep them whole for colour and texture. 4 Roll into balls. 5 Sieve the gram flour into a small bowl

and mix with the water, salt and pepper until smooth. 6 Dip each ball into the batter until well coated. 7 Either fry on a hot frying pan with 2 tbsp of oil until crispy on each side OR else bake at 180 degrees for 10 mins on each side.

HEALTHIER ROLO TRUFFLES Really easy to make, super tasty and with the benefit of being much lower in fat and higher in fibre - we think they taste better than the real thing! A batch of these work well as a homemade present. Takes: 20 minutes Makes: 25 balls/15 heart shapes

Filling: 200g medjool dates 100g walnuts 100g cashew nuts 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 tablespoon cacao powder

Chocolate coating: 250g dark chocolate A heart shaped cutter or a mould (if you have one, ideal to shape the final product) Dried rose petals / freeze dried raspberries (optional for decoration)

VEGAN SAUSAGE ROLLS These vegan sausage rolls brought us right down memory lane... memories of gorging on mountains of sausage rolls at friends’ birthday parties as kids. This recipe is next level and really worth trying. The puff pastry is available in the frozen section of most supermarkets and is usually vegan.

1 Remove the stones from the dates.

Takes: 30 mins to make Makes: 6

2 Add all the ingredients for the filling into a food processor and whizz until super smooth like toffee (will take a few minutes).

Filling:

3 Remove the filling from the food processor and roll into balls.

Alternatively, flatten out the filling so that it is 1 cm in height and using a knife or cutter/mould, cut into heart shapes and leave until it cools. 4 Melt your chocolate by setting up a water bath or gently heat on the stove. With the help of two spoons, dunk your truffles in the chocolate to fully coat each with chocolate and set aside until the chocolate hardens (this is the toughest part of this recipe, waiting for the chocolate to harden!) 5 Decorate with some dried rose petals or freeze dried raspberries (or whatever you have!) for a colourful presentation of your truffles.

1 x 400g tin butter beans 3 cloves garlic 100g walnuts 2 tbsp tamari 4 tbsp ground flaxseed 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 2 tbsp neutral tasting oil 1 tbsp dried Italian herbs (rosemary, oregano, thyme) Sesame seeds 1 sheet puff pastry (we used Jus-Rol) 1 Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius. 2 Drain and rinse the tin of butterbeans. Peel and finely slice the garlic 3 Add all the filling ingredients together in a food processor until they form a smooth, sausage-like texture. 4 Cut your puff pastry sheet in half, and roll your ‘sausage meat’ between your hands, creating a sausage-like shape, along the centre of each pastry half sheet. 5 Roll the puff pastry over the ‘sausage’ so that they are fully encased. You can use a fork to make indents along the sides if you wish. 6 Take a neutral tasting oil and a pastry brush, brushing the oil over the pastry, and then sprinkle with sesame seeds. 7 Cut your two large sausage rolls into the desired size with a knife. 8 Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes until they are looking lovely and golden and crispy and are smelling fab. Enjoy with some hummus, pesto or any of your desired condiments. thehappypear.ie

short & sweet 43 Nature’s Elixir BEING FRIENDLY, GENEROUS AND CONSIDERATE. by April Danann Taking herbs for any condition should be a completely normal everyday occurrence, built into our lives with a lifestyle that makes this easy and natural. It can be as simple as having a couple of teapots, a small store of select herbs and some general knowledge of how to use them. You can use herbs to treat the symptoms, however we must always stop, step back and look for the bigger picture. They are treating us, working with us and therefore must incorporate themselves into our body function. But they are not a medicine. They are a remedy and a food – herbs are not the ONLY answer, they are merely a guide and part of an overall APPROACH to a successful health care

regime. They can assist us in fine-tuning our innate healing potential. However, they do not form all of the programme. Taking a cup of tea in the morning and at night for a condition and then expecting it to change is kind of not enough! I always say to someone working with an acute illness or series of health issues, to take the herbs every hour or even every half hour. Fill your body with their presence. You are shifting biological function, raising physical cellular vibration and removing causative agents of disease. This takes careful tending to and our bodies require a constant supply of nature’s elixir to make this happen. There are so many other things

happening on other levels to result in this dysfunction. The herbs will be working on all of them and this simply takes more herbs and some time. They are working for you. aprildanann.com

Neelu’s Heart A CLINIC WITH CARE. by Aisling Cronin The first thing you notice when you meet Neelu White, Ireland’s best known natural skin care advocate, is her warmhearted demeanour. She explains, “there is one simple belief that guides me: treat everyone as I would like to be treated. People deserve to treat themselves well. Empathy and respect are core principles for me. I want people to feel special, cared for and comfortable when they visit the clinic.”

“There is one simple belief that guides me: treat everyone as I would like to be treated.” As a passionate advocate of non- invasive skincare, Neelu researches developments in natural skin health and healing and brings them to her Liffey Street, Dublin salon. “Think about how stress triggers acne and other skin complaints,” she explains. “There is a real connection between emotions and skin condition – I see it all the time.” Her aim is to get clients to look after themselves holistically, and for this caring approach to be reflected in their skin. Neelu’s facials are prescriptive and firmly rooted in experience and research-backed knowledge. Her 35 years of experience in the business helps too. Because she doesn’t use needles or injectables, she works harder to produce collagen and repair skin. Using Irevive, LED lights, oxygen and perfector in her prescriptive facials, Neelu aims to restore natural beauty. “A lot of my clients are middle aged men and women who want to look like themselves, but fresher. I get great results using natural products, with no down time, no long term skin damage and no unknown damage.” neelus-salon.com

Neelu - offering the ultimate in repairing skin Neelu is passionate about non-intervention skincare, no needles, fillers or chemicals. Just natural treatment machines and Neelu’s expertise. Revive ageing skin with the latest non-invasive treatment exclusively available in Ireland at Neelu’s Beauty Salon. IREVIVE rejuvenates the delicate tissue under the eyes, lifts sagging muscles and repairs all layers of the skin. It was invented by the same team that invented the heart pacemaker so it has scientific validity. IREVIVE is a cellular signalling, neuro frequency technology that uses only natural elements. No downtime, no pain, no peeling, no laser burns, no needles. The skin radiates from within with a natural youthful glow. Stretch marks show remarkable improvement.

Research found that if they can reinstate the signal of damaged pacemaker cells in the heart, they could develop a different, more complex signal. This could have anti-ageing application and benefits as it could serve in replacing the signals of unfolded proteins and damaged cells. IREVIVE series use ultra-low proprietary energies to send artificial intelligence blue print signals through the skin’s keratinocyte cells. Signals spread throughout the skin, muscle and bone structures between cells and within cells, repairing the damaged cells. Ageing is a reduction of signals between cells and also within cells. This latest technology increases the signals between cells and within cells. It thus counteracts ageing and turns back the clock. Thus, the IREVIVE machine was born. This leading technology has launched worldwide and is exclusive in Ireland to Neelu’s Beauty Salon.

Woodland Yoga A CELEBRATION OF ALIGNMENT. by Cathy Pearson

46 Happy as a Monk NEW BOOK REVEALS MEDITATION MAGIC. by Aisling Cronin Gelong Thubten is a world-renowned Buddhist monk who specialises in providing non-religious mindfulness workshops and programmes for businesses and organisations. He has been a monk since 1993 at Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, has trained under some of the world’s most accomplished teachers of meditation, and has spent over six years in intensive meditation retreats. Over the course of his career, he has worked with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Ruby Wax and Benedict Cumberbatch, to name just a few.

“Everyone has the potential to be happy – in fact, we are all hardwired for happiness.” Thubten has drawn on this vast experience to create his debut book, ‘A Monk’s Guide to Happiness.’ In this book, he explores the theme of happiness, and describes how we can bring the many benefits of meditation into our busy 21st century lives, through providing simple exercises. ‘A Monk’s Guide to Happiness’ explains how and why we need to look within, and connect to our true essence, in order to find peace. Everyone has the potential to be happy – in fact, we are all hardwired for happiness. But how do we tap into this innate sense of joy? Thubten explains that we do it by meditating, not just in the mornings, but throughout the day. By introducing ‘micro moments’ of meditation into our daily routines, we ensure that we never drop the mindfulness ball. Meditation is more than just a stressreduction tool or a relaxation therapy: it is the key to finding long-lasting happiness. gelongthubten.com

A giant Banyan tree I passed each day near a temple in Bali inspired me, and gave The Celtic Woodland Yoga Festival its roots. After germinating for years in my imagination, all the elements have finally come together into a living Festival. Even after decades of practice, what still aligns me the most is being in nature and walking barefoot on the earth. I have spent years living simply in the jungles of Thailand and more recently Bali (when not at home in Ireland). This Festival is a heartfelt offering from some of the most dedicated people in the international yoga community: authentic yogis who have been quietly working away, transforming their shadows and undoing their programming, to bring themselves into alignment with the rhythms of nature and the Source of Light.

“This Festival is a heartfelt offering from the most dedicated people in the yoga community.” Recently I came across trilliontrees.org, a shared vision for more trees on our planet. It struck a chord with me that this mission should be incorporated directly into the festival: that an oak tree will be planted for everyone who attends. We are fortunate to have The School of Philosophy and The National Botanic Gardens supporting and advising us in this initiative. What is yoga if not the nurturing and appreciation of our natural world? The poses, the breath and the philosophy are all beautiful keys to this transformative wisdom. The Festival takes place from the 19th to the 22nd of July in Co. Louth, with over 25 senior yoga teachers, spiritual educators and healers. i.yogadeep.com/celtic-yoga-festival

Find Paradise COACHING EXCELLENCE IN KERRY. by Aisling Cronin The Aquarian Health Store is located in Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry. Proprietor Suzan Turan has recently branched out into coaching: a venture she is very passionate about. When I spoke with her about her coaching plans, she said, “I’ve been in the business of natural products for about twenty years, and the health store was set up around seventeen to eighteen years ago. About two years ago, I joined a mentors’ program that was fantastic for me on many levels. As I went on my journey of self-discovery – examining my own unconscious beliefs and so on – I found that I wanted to share it with other people too.” Working together with a friend of hers, Suzan created

“One of my favourite lines is ‘perfection is the enemy of progress’.”

a twelve-module course called Finding Your Inner Paradise. It is a home study course that people can follow in their own time. In addition to the course material, people will be given access to a private and confidential Facebook group where you can share your experiences, ask questions and get feedback. You will also be given bonus materials, worksheets and teachings. Making big changes within your life is never an easy process, but every journey begins with a single step. People simply need to be willing to commit, as she made clear during our conversation. “One of my favourite lines is ‘perfection is the enemy of progress’. We often hold ourselves back from doing things because we think we won’t be good enough.” aquarianhealth.ie/coaching

DISCOVER CRANIOSACRAL HEALING. by Aisling Cronin Geoff Caird is a craniosacral practitioner based in Ballydehob, Co. Cork. His deep dedication to furthering his clients’ wellbeing was evident during a recent conversation I had with him. Speaking about how he got into the healing world, Geoff said, “I was originally interested in pyschotherapeutic work through Jungian, Voice Dialogue, Gestalt and Ego psychology. Later, I began to see the body in a whole way, and got interested in the somatic experience and the body’s ability to heal itself. About fifteen years ago, I came across Charles Ridley, did some work with him, and realised that I was very drawn to craniosacral work.” For Geoff, the core element of craniosacral therapy involves simply listening to the body and what it needs. “I listen to the body – the rhythms and

movements of fluids, tissues and bones – attuning to blockages and distortions, supporting alignment and centeredness.”

“The core element of craniosacral therapy involves simply listening to the body and what it needs.” Geoff places particular emphasis on the importance of cerebral spinal fluid. He

describes it as a ‘healing elixir’, with the potential to heal many imbalances in our bodies, once it is flowing correctly. Craniosacral therapy is very effective at treating head, neck and back problems, nervous system issues and tension, trauma and PTSD. It can also help heal mothers and babies. Geoff has a wide range of clients from Cork and beyond. You can contact him by email or phone:. geoffcaird@gmail.com 0878391973

Graceful Healing UNLEASH THE POWER OF HERBS. by Aisling Cronin Herbs of Grace is a network of trained herbalists and naturopaths aiming to improve the overall health of people living on the island of Ireland. Their primary role is to provide holistic consultations and treatments, based on the use of plant extracts. The Herbs of Grace team describe herbalism as a method of bringing the body back to balance, encouraging its natural healing capabilities. This form of medicine has existed for thousands of years, predating the advent of modern allopathic medicine. A herbalist treats each client as an individual, regarding them through a holistic viewpoint. This approach involves taking into account the physical, mental and emotional challenges to the client’s health and providing them with an individualised treatment plan, all the while bearing in mind that health is not only the absence of symptoms, but a return to vitality.

“A herbalist treats each client as an individual, regarding them through a holistic viewpoint.”

Naturopathy, which translates to ‘nature cure’, is guided by the principle of vis medicatrix naturae – or the healing power of nature. This principle was illustrated around 450 BCE by the “father of medicine”, the Greek physician Hippocrates who said: ‘Health is the expression of a harmonious balance between various components of man’s nature, the environment and ways of life… Nature is the physician of disease.’ A naturopath combines these ancient fundamental principles with current scientific understandings of health and human systems. They emphasise prevention, treatment and promotion of optimum health and vitality through modalities that encourage the body’s self healing process.

Divine Words A MESSAGE FROM SPIRIT. by Aisling Cronin When Stephen Whyte was growing up, he was cynical when it came to spirituality. Over the past ten years, however, he has experienced an undeniable sense of deep connection to himself: to an inner voice he has that guides him each day. He describes it as, “Not a voice in my head. It’s a feeling. A rise of internal energy as a method of communication, a sign to myself. It took some time, but I learned to recognise this as my soul. My inner guide.” He now follows his guidance each step of the day, striving to do what he knows is right. He wants to assist those who may have become lost on their own journeys, and break down the stereotypes that society has built around spirituality. He asks, “What would society be like if we taught our youth not to battle oneself, but to listen to oneself ? How many illnesses could we reduce by removing stress from our bodies, teaching ourselves the tools we need to learn how to balance

“What would society be like if we taught our youth not to battle oneself, but to listen to oneself?” ourselves in any given moment?” Over the years, Stephen has explored the meaning of life, love and the power of the mind through a connection with his spiritual guide, John. Writing within a meditative state, he has built up a collection of words which provide

guidance on some of life’s deepest questions. These amazing insights are shared in his new book Words from John: Volume One. wordsfromjohn.com

My True Story A MIRACLE HEALING. by Grace Weston

In November 2014, healer Matthew Lennon saved my life. A doctor recommended Matthew to my mum, saying that if Matthew couldn’t help me, no one could. I was carried into his clinic weighing six stone and freezing with the cold. Patients in the clinic gave me their slots, as they felt I wouldn’t survive the night. I had been diagnosed with kidney disease, liver failure, blockages on my heart, thyroid and lung problems, Lyme Disease, eight infections, and lastly, a large lump on my right breast! I had been given up by the medics after eleven years of treatment and sent home to die. A professor told me that my thyroid was shutting down my organs and he consulted with a respiratory consultant in a famous Dublin clinic to support my treatment. The consultant told me I was on a maintenance programme to try and give

me the best quality of life that they could offer for the remainder of my life – which appeared as though it would be short.

“Ten months later, I came on in the Laois Senior County Final … which we won.”

When I went into Matthew, he told me my life force was very low. He asked me a lot of questions and he appeared to make his own diagnosis of my situation. He treated me as often as he could, and ten months later, I came on in the Laois Senior County Final … which we won. I am now back to fitness and enjoying life! www.matthewlennonhealer.com

Easeful Massage LIFT YOUR FACE NATURALLY. by Paul Congdon “Would you like to dance?” said the voice in my head. At least, that’s how it felt as Ffion Thomas began her treatment of my face. A combination of her naturally facelifting massage techniques and the kansa wand she uses in her treatments helped to unfold, relax and ease my face into a blissful field of relaxation. The kansa wand is a metal bronze alloy. It feels cold to the touch, yet it slides over the contours and tension points in your face with a great sense of ease, producing a releasing effect. “I specialise in natural forms of facial rejuvenation,” she explains, “especially Ayurvedic facial rejuvenation. I combine a few different methods, and the kansa wand massage is a very popular treatment. The word kansa means ‘bronze’ – a combination of copper, tin and iron. It’s known as ‘the healing metal’ in Ayurveda. This metal is really good at getting into the tensions of the face and smoothing the

People With No Brains IS IT POSSIBLE? by Ray Behan

Sharon Parker has no observable brain, for the most part. She is a qualified nurse and married with children. In childhood, doctors observed that she has no more than 15% of a brain. It is a popular assumption that the size of the brain determines a person’s intelligence. However, there are thought to be many people who have survived with ‘no brain.’ Now, I know what you may be thinking here: ‘yeah Ray…I married him!’ That’s not what I mean. Sharon’s IQ is 113. She is above average. People like Sharon and Phineas Gage have survived, lived and loved with minimal brains. Where is their consciousness, and why are they smart? Stuart Hameroff, a professor at the University of Arizona known for his studies of consciousness, believes that

“People have lived and loved with minimal brains. Where is their consciousness, and why are they smart?” quantum states in neural microtubules are responsible for consciousness. I have my own theory. Sharon has a neocortex and medulla. When brain neurons are ‘activated’, an electrical charge crosses the synaptic gap. This charge has an epiphenomenon (100 millionth of a volt) generated when the firing occurs. All electrical charges generate an electromagnetic field (EMF). EMFs have a signature. These ‘signatures’

store information. EMFs surround us, and are interconnected and connected to the unified field that gives rise to the universe. Is it possible that Sharon’s ‘partial’ brain fires a charge, creating an EMF which connects with the field outside of her, forms a signature, and becomes her memory, which she then accesses? thinkandgrowgroup.com.au

What’s the Scoop on 5G? WE HAVE THE POWER. by Aisling Cronin The subject of 5G cellular network waves – currently being mooted as an answer to our demand for faster, better internet access – is a controversial one. An ever-growing range of environmental and health organisations have expressed concerns about how this new technology will alter our bodies, animals’ migratory patterns and the health of already-stressed bee populations, to name a few. What we consider ‘progress’ is not always what it’s cracked up to be. When we look back at our lives, will we remember how fast our internet was? Or will we remember the sun on our faces, the light in our eyes, the beauty of a tranquil walk in the forest and the feel of seawater on our skin? Appreciating nature, and basking in the countless gifts it offers to us, is one of the simplest – yet greatest – things we can do with our lives.

“Treatments include the famous shirodhara – pouring of oil on the forehead – and kati basti for a sore lower back.” Dr Rajvinder is a naturalised Irish citizen who has completed six years of Ayurveda training in Punjab, India. For over a decade, she has been consulting, offering courses on nutrition and cooking, and doing hands-on spa treatments. These include the famous shirodhara – pouring of oil on the forehead (a treatment for insomnia, anxiety and blood pressure) – and kati basti for a sore lower back.

Dr Naheed Faroque recently arrived in Ireland and has settled in Co. Cork. She offers consultations, spa treatments and seminars on various health topics. More information about Ayurveda, its rich history, and its growing presence in Ireland, is available through Ayurveda Ireland’s website. ayurveda.ie

“Are we powerful Divine creators, capable of transmuting energy as we see fit?”

There is another perspective I would like to offer on this, which feels hugely important: when it comes to 5G, are we helpless victims, or are we powerful Divine creators, capable of transmuting energy as we see fit? I’m a huge fan of the angelic teacher Amanda Ellis, who recently made a YouTube video encouraging viewers to move away from the fear that so often clouds the 5G question. She said: ‘We

need to look at the full electromagnetic spectrum, of which 5G wavelength is just one small part. Many other wavelengths exist – including colour and sound waves – to match and harmonise it.’ For a powerful, uplifting perspective on the 5G issue, I highly recommend watching Amanda’s video, which can be accessed via this link: youtube.com/watch?v=tZV52F6FDko

MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR MICROBES. by Raymond B Cadwell, PhD Vladimir Nazaredic from the Genomic Research Laboratory at Geneva University Hospitals states that out of the 13,000 scientifically recognised bacteria species, around 150 of these are pathogenic to humans. All of our microbes have the capacity to be both beneficial and harmful in the body. I believe that every microbe has a benign version of itself and a pathogenic one. It is well documented that the good bacteria of the gut are essential for keeping pathogenic bacteria under control. We have no difficulty admitting the benefits of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium including enterobacter and Staphylococcus. There is even a beneficial form of E-Coli, which is called E-Coli Nissle 2017. This is administered in a probiotic called Mutaflor and it has been very successful in assisting with such issues as chronic constipation, abdominal pains and cramps. Another known example is H Pylori. For many years, H Pylori has been associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral vascular disease and sudden death. However, a study entitled ‘Helicobacter Pylori colonisation is inversely associated with childhood asthma’ (Yuchen & Martin J Blaser), from the School of Medicine and Microbiology, New York University, found that using antibiotics to kill off H Pylori in children has led directly to high levels of

56

childhood asthma. The benefits of H Pylori are regarded as: •R egulating the production of stomach acid •P articipating in the creation of a healthy immunity •P articipating in the secretion of gastrin (stomach brain communication) • Protecting against asthma and allergies

“Why not take a compassionate and kind approach to our immune system and work with it?” It has also been found that the fermentation produced by lactobacisullus protects H Pylori, and that turmeric regulates the action of H Pylori as well as Omega 3 fatty acids. This is an example of how a bacteria which has long been regarded as an enemy of human immunity can also be highly beneficial. The Epstein Barr virus carries extremely useful information in the regulation of the glandular system. When Epstein Barr is out of balance, it does cause glandular problems. When in balance, it helps the glandular system to function well. Another example is staphylococcus aureus, generally regarded as being an unfriendly bacteria. This bacteria first

enters the human microbiome at birth, where the baby picks it up from the skin of the mother. It then forms part of the baby’s new immune system. When it is out of balance, it can cause many different types of skin issues and fungal infections. On the other hand, when it is well balanced, it protects the skin against many other microbes as well as fungal infections. In complimentary multidimensional medicine, we take a benign attitude to microbes. Microbes are us: they play a big part in our immune system, combined with immune cells to provide us with a good strong protective system for our health and well-being. In applied biomagnetic therapy, the foundation of multi-dimensional medicine, we do not wage war on microbes. We don’t believe that doing so is proving to be successful for humans. More and more bacteria are becoming immune to antibiotics, as are viruses to anti-virals. Why wage war on ourselves in this way? Why not take a compassionate and kind approach to our immune system and work with it in order to cooperate in finding healthy solutions to our illnesses? Our body wants to cooperate with us, our biology is evolutionary, and it can evolve. So, let’s take a different approach. raymondcadwell.com

BE AMAZED BY THE STARS. by Ramon Horca

When was the last time you looked up at the stars? When was the last time ancient light travelling vast distances across the galaxy hit your eyes and awakened a completely new perspective in your life? As a student of the universe who’s always had a love of space and its vast energy, I got so much more than I bargained for when I began to really look. I found that I was looking into myself. Now I cannot unsee what I’ve seen, or unlearn what it’s taught me about my life, my connection to my fellow brothers and sisters and my relationship with this beautiful planet we live on. The equipment we use makes it possible to gaze into the vast galactic star fields of millions of suns just like ours. The question ‘are we alone?’ becomes almost laughable when you gain this new perspective. You start to understand there’s so much more going on out there than we realise, and that most of the stars you see have other worlds orbiting them. Look at another galaxy like Andromeda, 2.5 million light years away: when the light left from its stars on its way to us, we came into being. Great civilisations were built and lost. And we built the telescope, that

caught the light, that hit our eyes on its vast journey from 2.5 million years in the past. These are mind-melting numbers, but ultimately, experiencing a moment like this grounds you to your home galaxy and your place in it.

“The ancient light you see has traversed unimaginable oceans of time. What has it gathered on its way?” It can be very lonely on this planet. I get that. But I’ve found great solace in the thought that out there somewhere in the blackness, someone or something is feeling what you’re feeling, looking straight back at you as the light from our star reaches them and gifts them a glimmer of what’s possible. You can share a moment across the void without even speaking. I love that. The ancient light you see has traversed unimaginable oceans of time to reach you. What has it gathered on its way? When it hits you, a download can occur. This shows up differently for

everybody. For me, it was transformative. A galactic perspective was born. Witnessing people’s reactions is one of the most satisfying things about this for me. I love to see the shock, awe and sheer joy it brings. When somebody messages me after a night stargazing with us, saying that they felt something that night, or that they see things with a new perspective, I think ‘job done’. This is what it’s really about. We want to break the frame and get people thinking bigger and better about the planet and each other, and to realise that worrying about the small stuff has no place in the galactic scheme of things. There’s still time left on the clock to affect positive change on this planet. The universe doesn’t know good or bad, it just knows what is. We get back what we put out: a small reminder of a vastly bigger picture. Carl Sagan said, “We’re all made of star stuff.” So as above, so below. And the more we look, maybe the more we’ll know. We run stargazing tours as Galactic Wicklow. For more info, check us out on Facebook: ‘Galactic Wicklow’

UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL – HUMAN UPGRADE PENDING. Author: Aisling Cronin - Interviewer: Paul Congdon

Judy Satori is a vibrational sound healer, author and spiritual teacher who describes her role as a catalyst and activator for Spirit. Her act of service on this planet is to transmit energy words of new creation, designed to switch on more of our human DNA genetic potential. We were thrilled to have Judy as a Positive Nights guest recently, where we heard her wisdom on humanity’s history and current trajectory. In your book Sunshine Before the Dawn, you described an encounter you had with extraterrestrial beings, who told you a story about the creation of the human race. The story that was explained to me is that humankind was created by a union of star beings – advanced and loving extraterrestrials from star systems like Sirius, the Pleiades, Andromeda, Lyra and Arcturus, who all contributed an aspect of their own genetic code to the new species. The human was gifted with a twelve-strand DNA code, relating to each of the twelve dimensions within this Milky Way Galaxy where consciousness and soul can take on physical form. Human beings were brought to Earth a hundred thousand

years ago, at a time when consciousness on this planet had contracted to a third-dimensional vibration. The physical beings living on Earth at that time could not be reached by forces of Divine Light. They did not have the required capacity within their genetic code for advancement. Where has human evolution come to now? We are at the beginning of a new Golden Age, and are being activated and upgraded by forces of Light, God and Creation. Ascension is not about going up, or going anywhere. Ascension is a process of expanding who we are as people. Since 1987, and particularly since 2013 – after the Earth shifted to the faster

vibrating energies of the fifth dimension – powerful, activating frequencies of new creation have been streaming to Earth. We are all being challenged to align with love, peace and unity consciousness. What is your role in this process? For the past 22 years I have been trained by Spirit as a channel or conduit of energy and information. My purpose is to help people to clear limiting and sabotaging beliefs and to activate their true DNA potential. I speak very rapid energy words that are transmitted through me automatically by Spirit. These energy words are received at the level of the cells and the DNA template. They switch on previously dormant DNA potential, activate soul wisdom from past lives and support healing and physical balance.

Consciously create feelings of love and peace, as these vibrations alone are harmonious and transformative to body and mind. Walking barefoot on the grass is a very good way to ground yourself and detoxify. We are becoming fifth-dimensional beings. We need to align with the fifth-dimensional energies of the Earth, as well as eating a predominately plant-based diet of foods that are vitalised by Earth vibration.

Tell us more about your Ascension Library. For the past 15 years, I have created many audio programmes designed to open the heart into love, help people step into their power, clear sabotaging and limiting blocks and beliefs and manifest and create abundance. The best of these programmes are in my Ascension Library, to help people become happier, healthier and live more productive and purposeful lives. However, the main thing about the Ascension Library is that it is a delivery system for the ever-strengthening Ascension energies that will be streaming to Earth from 2020 until 2033. The library is easy to access, well organised so you can find what you need to support you, includes video and audio, and most importantly has a low cost monthly subscription so that you can afford to access the programmes without having to buy them. In addition, you can access the programmes by phone, laptop, or tablet… so it’s easy! Every month, I also have a Full Moon transmission that library members receive free. This is the latest, updated energy and information that I receive from Spirit. Visit ascensionlibrary.org for free trial access. There is nothing you need to do except LISTEN. You can listen to our full interview with Judy on SoundCloud – just search ‘Positive Life Magazine’ to find us. judysatori.com

the gifts of

balance UNDERSTANDING PLANETS AND CHAKRAS.

by Calodagh McCumiskey

I am often asked about the connection between planets and chakras. And yes: there is a relationship at a fundamental level. When we explore the chakras and planets without focusing on the physical body and our organs, they offer great insights into the nature of the heavenly bodies. The ancient sages originally understood the planets based on their experience of the seven major chakras of the psychic body. Through observation, they discovered how movements of the heavenly bodies influenced different areas of life and our psychic centres. They saw how the movements of the planets and their relative placements with one another gave greater creativity, vitality, lethargy, conflict or activity. They thus understood the qualities of the planets in terms of how they influenced the human psyche and worldly events. Each planet has its own personality and characteristics. Mars relates to the root chakra. The key message is: I am. Mars gives us great drive and motivation, when we are clearly grounded in our own reality and accept our past such that it is not holding us and we are fully living in the present. An agitated Mars or base chakra easily gives rise to guilt, shame, fear, insecurity, frustration and anger.

Venus relates to the sacral chakra. The key message is: I feel. Venus is the planet of worldly pleasures. When other factors are in place and Venus is good, we are free to enjoy all the pleasures of the world spontaneously without being attached to them. We are comfortable in our own skin. The sun relates to our solar plexus. The key message is: I do. This is the battery of the body. When it is working correctly, we have plenty of energy and vitality to do and live life according to who we are and the gifts we have. We feel confident and optimistic, and are able to digest life fully, act as we choose and be who we want to be in all situations, without imbalances in ego. Moon relates to our heart chakra. The key message is: I love. The moon is the significator for mother. The moon nourishes us and gives us flow and boundaries. When we are in

balance in these terms, we achieve peace and bliss. We can give love and receive love wholeheartedly and unreservedly. Mercury relates to communication and our expression. The key message is: I speak. When we can freely and authentically express who we are, including our creative aspects, Mercury is balanced and working well. Saturn relates to the third eye. The key message is: I see. When our Saturn is working well, we are able to think clearly and with great insights. Saturn helps us to understand the consequences of our actions and the natural laws of karma and life. Jupiter relates to the crown chakra. The message is: I understand. Jupiter blesses us with wisdom, expansion and generosity. These basic understandings of each chakra and corresponding planet offers much wisdom for a happy, meaningful, fulfilled and joyful life.
