76TH WARREN FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION ‘Superheroes of Our Future’ Theme for

By JOSH COTTON jcotton@timesobserver.com

After a one-year detour, the Fourth of July Parade is set to be back on a normal route.

The parade stayed on the city’s east side in 2023 due to roundabout construction on Pennsylvania Ave.

The route that starts on the east end and comes west past Gen. Joseph Warren Park is set to return in 2024.

The parade is the capstone of a weekend-long celebration for the nation’s birth. 2024 marks the 76th anniversary of the celebration in Warren.

This year’s theme is “Superheroes of our Future.”

The parade will be Thursday, July 4, while the fireworks will touch off Saturday night to wrap up the celebration.

Bookended by the parade and fireworks, the rest of the weekend will see events center at Betts Park. That will include live music each night - Gary Burk III on July 4, Whiskey Joe on July 5 and Radio 45 on Saturday.

2024 will also mark the third year for the Warren’s Got Talent competition. Registration for that is open and the first 20 people are guaranteed entry. The competition starts on Friday and then wraps up Saturday.

The Fourth of July organization was recognized by the Warren County Visitors Bureau as the “Warren County Tourism Event of the Year” for 2023.

Last year, the parade included about 100 units and lasted almost three hours.

44th Annual Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival - Celebrating Artistic Excellence and Family Fun! This year’s event takes place on Saturday, September 7th & Sunday, September, 8th at the Warren County Fairgrounds, 371 Barton Run Road, Pittsfield, PA. Held rain or shine, hours are 10 am to 5 pm, each day.

Every year the weekend after Labor Day, the Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival opens its gates to a crowd of art enthusiasts, crafters, family, and friends. There is always excitement in the air - the sounds of kettle corn popping and artists greeting new and longtime customers, the sights of vibrant-colored mums and crisp fall apples, and the smells of homemade pie and apple strudel. Children tug on their parents’ hands, steering them to the petting zoo, families marvel at the magician’s humor and tricks, and friends enjoy good conversation and a tasty meal while their feet tap to live music. In amongst all this festivity, true artistic talent and creativity abound. The celebration of handcrafted artistry is the foundation of this event, and keeping tradition with its award-winning reputation, the festival brings together an array of artistic talents to present a show that is unsurpassed.

In addition to spotlighting the tradition of handcrafted art, Wild Wind is proud to honor the value of time spent with family and friends. Children can delight in the ever-popular traveling petting zoo, face painting, balloon artistry, and more. Another favorite is the Tamarack Wildlife Center, with its birds of prey exhibit and lectures. Of special note, Alexander the Magician is back to delight the crowd with a new twist on his unique blend of humor and enchantment. The festival also welcomes chainsaw carvers, Brian Fox, from Fox Sawmill & Custom Design, and Lisa Barr, from Barrnone Carvings & Creations. Their talents in crafting birds, bears, turtles, and more will be on full display, and visitors are encouraged to watch the action! With equal excitement, other demonstrations, from wool spinning to glass blowing, take place throughout the festival offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy the day.

New this year, Mandy Moon of Vivacous Flow Arts will share her hula hooping talents through demonstration and instruc-

tion. Both adults and children should come prepared to participate in this fun and engaging activity! Hoops will also be available for purchase so newly learned skills can be further developed and shared.

When it comes time to take a break from the show’s sights, a shaded picnic area is a wonderful retreat, while a creative assortment of delectable foods await hearty appetites. French artichokes, BBQ pork, gyros, crab cakes, sausage subs, hand-cut french fries, homemade pie, ice cream, root beer, and more! Live music is on deck to add to the ambiance, with Old Dawg Bluegrass on Saturday and Warren’s own, Temple Grey, adding to the toe-tapping on Sunday.

The Wild Wind Folk Art & Craft Festival welcomes you to make a treasured memory by joining them for the weekend to embrace the wonder of award-winning craftsmanship and family fun. The admission fees are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under. As a bonus, those who attend on Saturday can return on Sunday free of charge. The Warren County Visitors Bureau showcases Warren County through its visitors guide, advertisements throughout the region and at various travel shows.

That showcase comes closer to home with the WCVB’s first “Warren County Showcase” event set for Saturday, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the WCVB’s office in Starbrick, 22045 US 6, Warren.

The event will include events, attractions, food trucks and activities as well as a litany of exhibitors for organizations, events and assets, including entities like the Allegheny National Forest and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as well as entities like the Wilder Museum, Brokenstraw Valley Winery, Passionately Natural Soap Co. and Music on the Mountain, among others.

“We plan on having some cornhole and yard games,” WCVB Executive Director Casey Ferry said, as well as live music from Alyssa Wismar.

She said that the WCVB has had people reach out to them about potentially being vendors.

“We’re hoping to have a lot of people through,” she said. “I’m excited about it. It’s going to be fun.”

Ferry said that part of the goal of the event is to highlight what’s here.

“There’s so many things people” don’t know about in Warren County.

PRESQUE ISLE Hiking Trails

Presque Isle has 11 miles of trails exclusively for walkers, ranging from a short quarter-mile trail near Cranberry Pond to a 2-mile Dead Pond Trail through different types of habitats. Many of the trails connect and so hikers are able to enjoy longer treks if they wish. They are also welcome on the 13.5 mile multi-purpose trail, which they share with cyclists, in-line skaters and joggers. Part of this trail is plowed in winter for walkers and the rest is left snow-covered for skiers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources notes that due to fluctuating lake levels, parts of trails are wet enough in some seasons to require boots.

Fox Trail: This trail winds through wooded swamps and oak-maple forests. It is maintained and groomed as a cross-country ski trail in the winter. (.5 miles)

Old Gas Well Trail: This trail follows a ridge between Beach 7 and the Marina. The trail passes a gas well that produces gas used at Presque Isle State Park. (.5 miles)

Canoe Portage Trail: This short walk between sand dunes and forest connects Pettinato Beach (Beach 8) to Marina Lake. (.25 miles)

Ridge Trail: This trail follows the edge of Cranberry Pond along a portion of ridge that was a beach dune 300 years ago. (.5 miles)

Marsh Trail: This trail bisects Cranberry Pond, one of the many ponds on Presque Isle. The pond formed as water was trapped between two ridges. (.25 miles)

Sidewalk Trail: This historic trail was originally constructed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service as a path from the Presque Isle Lighthouse to the U.S. Lighthouse Service boathouse in Misery Bay. The trail was once a wooden boardwalk and was resurfaced with concrete in 1925. (1.25 miles)

Dead Pond Trail: This trail leads over several former dunes and through several distinct ecological zones. You will walk through oak-maple forest, pines and sandplains. (2 miles)

A-Trail: This short trail connects Pine Tree Picnic Area to Dead Pond Trail and passes through a vernal pond. When the vernal pond fills with water in the spring, the trail is wet. (.2 miles)

B-Trail: This short trail connects Pine Tree Road to Dead Pond Trail and passes through a stand of pines. (.25 miles)

Pine Tree Trail: This trail follows the edge of a sandplain community and a stand of pines. Located along this trail are the remains of the Biology Field Lab that was used by Dr. O. E. Jennings to study plant succession on Presque Isle. (.7 miles)

Gull Point Trail: This trail begins at the kiosk at the east end of the Budny Beach (Beach 10) parking lot and makes a loop through Gull Point. At the southeast end of the loop, a trail leads to the edge of the Special Management Area and an observation platform for viewing shorebirds. (1.5 miles)

North Pier Trail: This trail follows the shoreline between North Pier and Beach 11, along one of the sand ridges. An old firing range used for training during World War II may be seen along this trail. (.7 miles)

Grave Yard Pond Trail: This trail follows the shoreline along

Grave Yard Pond, which as legend has it was the final resting place for many of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's men during the winter of 1813-1814. Two boat landings along the trail offer scenic views of the lagoons and Big Pond (.75 miles)

Long Pond Trail: This trail follows the shoreline of Long Pond, one of the ponds within the lagoon. Approximately halfway along this trail is a boat landing. The landing is a popular fishing spot and offers a scenic view of the lagoon. (1 mile) Duck Pond Trail: This trail begins at Duck Pond and intersects the Canoe Portage Trail and connects with the Old Gas Well Trail. (.5 miles)

Duck Pond Trail: This trail begins at Duck Pond and intersects the Canoe Portage Trail and connects with the Old Gas Well Trail. (.5 miles)

Karl Boyes Multi-purpose National Recreation Trail: The Multi-Purpose Trail and extension makes a 13.5-mile circuit of the park. This paved trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail. This ADA accessible trail is popular with bicyclists, in-line skaters and joggers. During the winter, the trail is plowed from the entrance to the park office for hikers. For cross-country skiers, the trail is left snow covered from the park office to Perry Monument.

PRESQUE ISLE State Park

Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. As Pennsylvania's only "seashore," Presque Isle offers its visitors a beautiful coastline and many recreational activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, bicycling, and in-line skating.

Presque Isle is a day-use park that provides year-round recreational opportunities. Overnight accommodations are available nearby.

The neck of the peninsula is attached to the mainland four miles west of downtown Erie. The park creates Presque Isle Bay, a wide and deep harbor for the city of Erie. The bay attracts many pleasure boats and worldwide freighters -- making Erie an important Great Lakes shipping port.

A National Natural Landmark, Presque Isle is a favorite spot for migrating birds. Because of the many unique habitats, Presque Isle contains a greater number of the state's endangered, threatened, and rare species than any other area of comparable size in Pennsylvania.

Whether you come to enjoy the sandy beaches, study ecological diversity, or learn about the historical significance of the peninsula, there is something for everyone at Presque Isle State Park.

Amenities include a boat launch, comfort station, environmental education center, lighthouse, marina, parking, picnic shelter, picnic tables, ranger station, sanitary dump or pump out station, seasonal food and refreshment concessions at the beach.

TOM RIDGE ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

The Tom Ridge Environmental Center is the gateway to Presque Isle State Park, and the gateway to discovery.

This 65,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art, green-designed facility encourages visitors to experience the unique history and ever-changing, diverse ecosystems of Presque Isle State Park.

Built to symbolize the peninsula in its architectural design, the TREC opened during 2006 and is the first building in the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks to earn a LEED silver certification rating. This multi-functional building houses the park office, laboratories, and many opportunities for visitors.

An educational center at heart, TREC is dedicated to teaching visitors about Presque Isle and the many different forms of life that inhabit this unique peninsula. TREC also serves as a center for research, contributing to conservation efforts and promoting environmental awareness, helping to preserve the unparalleled beauty of Presque Isle.

Large-format movies, guided tours, and other activities are available.

Admission is free to the interactive exhibits and the 75-foot observation tower.

GLASS GROWERS GALLERY is Celebrating 50 Years

Glass Growers Gallery (GGG), located in downtown Erie, Pa., is proudly celebrating 50 years in business. The gallery and gift shop represents over 90 regional artists and features another 100 artisans from across the country, creating a diverse and ever-changing selection of unique artwork and artisan goods. GGG offers paintings, photographs, pottery, glass, mosaics, jewelry, sculpture, and more. This milestone signifies a five decade legacy of cultural enrichment and artistic contributions to the Erie community.

In 1974, Glass Growers Gallery (GGG) opened its doors at 2nd and Plum to showcase the work of John and Deborah Vahanian. They took flat sheets of glass and made 3D objects: geodesic domes and quartz crystal shapes that became part of kinetic sculpture, terrariums, light fixtures, and windows. The name “Glass Growers” has its roots in that process. Over time, the founders stopped “growing glass” themselves and

expanded the gallery’s representation of regional fine art and professional American crafts in their bright, welcoming, plant-filled space.

In 1982, GGG relocated to a renovated church building at 701 Holland St. In the spacious 2 ½ story building, Deb Vahanian took the lead and began curating annual shows: Quilt, Watercolor, Kaleidoscope as well as other unique shows like the History of the Bicycle, the Carousel, Joseph Plavcan Student Retrospective, International Images, Women in Transition, and Judy Chicago’s “The Birth Project” to name a few. GGG thrived while providing artistic encounters for the community and encouraging people to find their creative selves.

In 1999, the Erie Art Museum planned to expand. GGG chose to be its neighbor by moving to its current location in the heart of downtown Erie, 10 E. 5th St. In September of 2020, Deborah Vahanian retired and GGG was purchased by its current owner, Emily Ernes. Two staff members, Noreen Finn and Susan Martin, stayed on and helped ensure a seamless transition with their combined 30 years of experience. The team continues to focus their attention on celebrating art and imagination and creating an inspiring space for the community. Prioritizing art experiences, GGG features rotating art exhibits in the main gallery every 6-8 weeks, hosts a variety of artist workshops, participates in seasonal gallery nights through the Erie Art Museum, and hosts boutique nights and other events with its shopping district neighbors.

GGG believes there is a special inherent quality found in original artwork and handcrafted artisan goods. These pieces are imbued with a sense of purpose and meaning from the careful attention provided during the artistic creation process, making

them acquisitions to be treasured for years to come. GGG’s art and gift offerings and event calendars can be found online at https://www.glassgrowersgallery.com. Nationwide shipping is available (free on jewelry-only orders) and the staff is readily available for personalized shopping consultations at staff@ glassgrowersgallery.com or 814-453-3758.

If you haven’t visited downtown Erie recently, you’re in for a treat. The blocks surrounding GGG have been experiencing a renaissance. Only a short walk from the beautiful bayfront and filled with historical buildings and architecture, downtown Erie provides a special, multi-faceted experience for visitors to shop, dine, learn, and play. The team at Glass Growers Gallery hopes you will stop by and find joy and inspiration from our rich history, unique art offerings, and enthusiasm for the vibrant Erie community and its bright future.

NATIONAL COMEDY CENTER

By THE POST-JOURNAL STAFF editorial@post-journal.com

The National Comedy Center is really turning up the heat this summer for the 2024 Lucille Ball Comedy Festival happening August 1- 4.

The Comedy Center announced that the “Roastmaster General” himself, Jeff Ross, and Nailed It!’s Nicole Byer will headline the first two nights of the festival at Jamestown’s Reg Lena Center for the Arts. A third headliner, confirmed for August 3 at the Northwest Arena will be announced in mid-June.

Known for his numerous high-profile roast credits, including the most recent blockbuster Netflix “Roast of Tom Brady,” Jeff Ross brings his new solo show to town August 2. The semi-autobiographical “Take a Banana For the Ride” paints a poignant portrait of the comedian’s life through both laughter and loss as he celebrates the lives of his grandfather, his best friends and even his dog.

Nicole Byer takes the stage August 1. Byer is one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today; widely known as the host of the Emmy-nominated Netflix reality-competition baking series Nailed It! on Netflix. Byer has also won acclaim recently for her Netflix specials Big Beautiful Weirdo and Comedians of the World She regularly hosts the popular podcasts, Why Won’t You Date Me, and What the Tuck?

The third headliner, set to be announced in mid-June, is one of the highest grossing stand-up comedians in 2024 and will perform at Northwest Arena on Saturday, August 3.

Tickets for the Jeff Ross and Nicole Byer shows and other festival events are currently on sale for National Comedy Center members and will go on sale for the general public June 6 at noon at ComedyCenter.org.

The three-day festival attracts comedy enthusiasts from all over the globe, boasting more than 50 live events and attracts more than 15,000 attendees annually from nearly every state in the country, who come together to share laughter while honoring the craft and contributors on stage at dozens of venues throughout Jamestown, including the National Comedy Center and the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum.

Previous Festival headliners, according to comedy center. org, include Jerry Seinfeld, Trevor Noah, Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Amy Schumer, W. Kamau Bell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jim Gaffigan, Paula Poundstone, Joan Rivers, Jeff Foxworthy, Margaret Cho, SNL Legends David Spade, Rob Schneider and Kevin Nealon along with more than one hundred other comedic artists. The 2023 festival featured record-breaking comedians Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and Taylor Tomlinson.

In August 2023, before his performance, Iglesias gifted his wardrobe, from his 2022 sold-out Dodger Stadium Performance, to the National Comedy Center. After his tour of the center, he said he may also gift one of his prized Volkswagen Buses to the NCC. Topspeed.com said Iglesias has a very large collection of VW buses housed in Long Beach, Calif, which has been dubbed “The Fluffy Museum.”

“I’ll put you guys in the will,” Iglesias said. “And that’s a great thing too, because I have been struggling with a business manager, and going back and forth with a trust. It sucks when they tell you to write down a list of all your favorite people in order and figure out what’s going to happen when your gone because nobody wants to have those conversations. I can safely say this (The National Comedy Center) is definitely making the list.”

Joan Rivers’ 65,000 jokes will be arriving in 2025 to be part of her exhibit at the National Comedy Center. Highlights from the collection include Rivers’ earliest hand-written jokes, personally compiled scrapbooks, never-before-heard autobiographical audio recordings, hundreds of pre-show preparatory notes, intimate correspondence with peers in entertainment, the guest books from her storied run as host of “The Late Show with Joan Rivers,” and a selection of the iconic gowns, boas,

and jewelry that defined her inimitable style.

Other popular exhibits include Johnny Carson: The immersive Experience, and Carolines.

“The Johnny Carson: The Immersive Experience is presented in a theater environment where visitors are enveloped in the story, featuring hologram host Jimmy Fallon. It takes you on a journey through the legacy of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show,” Gunderson said.

The exhibit is designed to fully immerse visitors into Johnny Carson’s rich history on The Tonight Show. Gunderson said visitors will be surrounded by storytelling, media and sound. The exhibit features Jimmy Fallon as the hologram host, presenting visitors with a unique experience.

Located within the center’s state-of-the-art museum, the new Carolines exhibition celebrates the 40-year legacy of the iconic Times Square comedy venue — one of the world’s most important venues for showcasing the art of stand-up comedy.

The Carolines exhibit features iconic artifacts, including the stage backdrop bearing the world-renowned harlequin Carolines logo, showroom curtains and signage, entry doors and “barfly” stools.

Carolines showcased the world’s greatest comedic talent — first in Chelsea and later at the South Street Seaport, before calling Times Square home in 1992 — playing an integral role in the resurgence of the Times Square district.
