As we race towards the finish line of what we must do, before saying goodbye to one of the most challenging year in the history of man. It's important for us all stop and give thanks for making it this far. Covid-19 had been a leveller in every aspect of life. We are grateful to Almighty for showing us mercy and for granting us grace to keep delivering life transforming publication on a monthly basis.

We will be launching our sister publication (Powerhouse Global Stars) in the coming month. We have decided to separate our work to enable us to focus on delivering quality services. POWERHOUSE GLOBAL MAGAZINE (PGMAG) INTERVIEW WITH:

KAREN KORPONAI (KK) Karen is the CEO and Founder of Konscious Konsulting LLC. She is also the Founder and Managing Partner of Akon Global LLC. Karen has worked with many top brands by helping them to deliver quality and sustainable projects around the world. PGMAG: Karen, so good to have you on today's interview KK: It’s a privilege to be featured in such a prestigious magazine with global reach. It’s a true honor. Thank you Powerhouse Global Magazine. PGMAG: I know there is more to you than what was mentioned in the introduction. Please share a little bit about yourself and tell us some of the values you bring to the world. KK: I grew up in a multicultural home with family from Slovakia, Hungary, Spain and Germany. I spent my youth in Bolivia and my mother made sure I spent time exploring and visiting the villages around the country. On the other hand, my father’s career with the United States Agency for International Development living around the world assisting with development and humanitarian issues showed me that if we help each other, we are all better off. My parents were quick to remind me that we are all equal and should be treated equally. They taught me that I should always make time for a kind act or a helping hand. This upbringing fueled my passion to have a positive impact on people and the planet. A combination of my upbringing and my personal

and business travel experiences is what inspired me to launch my own consulting company promoting the business paradigm that focuses on people, planet, purpose and prosperity. Konscious Konsulting LLC is in the business of guiding companies and foundations in their quest to turn visions of positive change into reality. From villages to boardrooms, I continue to align my personal and company values with that of my clients. I stay true to the mission and only take on projects that excite me and that will allow me to leave a better world for generations to come. Most recently, I have been focusing on technologies for good. I have joined forces with music star, Akon, as Managing Partner in Akon Global LLC with a focus on special projects and smart cities. The goal is to accelerate the Akon Smart City initiative in Senegal through strategic partnerships. I also joined the STP Capital technology park initiative in North Macedonia as Director of Sustainability and Social Impact. These technology driven opportunities will allow me to explore scalable solutions such as those impacting clean energy and ocean plastics. PGMAG: We know you have done some great work in Africa through your partnership with 'Akon'. Please share a brief on this. KK: In many areas of the world, access to

electricity is not a given. In fact, in Africa there are over 600 million people who do not have access to electricity. The Grammy-Nominated, MultiPlatinum selling SenegaleseAmerican artist, Akon, wanted to change this and give back to Africa. I was excited and honored to have joined the Akon Lighting Africa team, as one of their first consultants. We successfully impacted over 1 million rural households in over 10 countries by making cost effective solar energy equipment available to them. This access to solar energy supported the creation of jobs in small businesses and

agriculture as well as extending access to education via evening classes. “Everything is possible with electricity and people’s lives and communities will be forever changed! said, Akon. It was powerful to witness first hand the impact of one solar street light in a village. The entire village would dance, sing and celebrate the arrival of the solar light. The community dynamics changed as they sat under it at night to socialize, study and work. As a consultant to Akon, I focused on attracting strategic

PGMAG: I was drawn to the word 'Conscious' on your bio. It says that you are in the business of guiding 'conscious' companies. Please share with us how companies could benefit from your services. KK: As the founder of

Konscious Konsulting introduced WIN to the #Togetherband campaign, the Global Citizen Forum, and a few others which led to a connection with actress and humanitarian Amber Heard. Konscious Konsulting, I am in the business of guiding companies and foundations in their quest to turn visions of positive change into reality. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with extraordinary individuals aligned and eager to change the lives of others that are less fortunate. I thrive on connecting clients to strategic partners that will accelerate company growth and allow for positive change in the world. Konscious Konsulting promotes the business paradigm that focuses on people, planet, purpose and prosperity. My company offers expertise in business development, sustainability strategies, marketing and communications and a network of strategic partners. Companies and clients benefits from our unique global network of strategic partners. This network

has been created over years of building relationships and becoming a trusted advisor to celebrity influencers and investors. An example is when I consulted the World Identity Network (WIN). The objective was to match WIN with a celebrity to elevate awareness on the right of every individual to have an identity. Over 1.1 billion people in the world are unable to prove their identity and therefore lack access to vital services such as healthcare, education, finances and social protection. We began the journey by creating a list of celebrities that aligned with this cause and selected a venue, the United Nations General Assembly, to curate an event to elevate WIN and their mission. Konscious Konsulting introduced WIN to the #Togetherband campaign, the Global Citizen Forum, and a few others which led to a connection with actress and humanitarian Amber Heard. As a result, WIN held a press conference during the United Nations General Assembly in New York bringing together these partners to announce Amber Heard as an official #Togetherband campaign Ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace,

partnerships to accelerate the Akon Lighting Africa initiative. For example, I fostered the relationship with Sunna Design which led to building the first African-made solar streetlight assembly plant in West Africa. A second partnership I managed, led to the cocreation and execution of Light to Learn, a campaign around education and energy in Liberia in collaboration with Bridge International Academies and Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected female head of state in Africa. Having worked close to Akon for over 7 years, I learned that building trust and long-term relationships and strategic partnerships is critical for sustainable growth and positive impact. Now, as Managing Partner of Akon Global LLC with a focus on special projects and accelerating smart cities initiatives in Africa, I can continue to tap into and grow the business network and partnerships.

It has been said many times; “We are all part of one world”. When I leave someplace, I want to take lessons from the people I have met and leave only footprints. I like to believe each footprint is an act of kindness. And each act has a ripple effect as people embrace positive experiences and feel empowered to touch, move and inspire others.

PGMAG: Our record shows that you have travelled to over 70 countries - that's a huge achievement. How has your traveling experiences impacted your style of leadership? KK: I am fortunate to have travelled to over 70 countries, 40 of which were for work projects. These travel experiences have molded my leadership style and has taught me to adapt quickly to my surroundings and use creativity to achieve my goals anywhere from remote villages to board rooms. Working with people from all over the globe has taught me humility and has given me the ability to relate to people from all walks of life. I am usually there to help them, but meeting and working with them inevitably changed me and allowed me to grow to be a

PGMAG: As a global influencer, what is your message for world leaders? KK: As a global influencer, my message for world leaders today is for a kinder, more aligned world, which was further heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. I feel this pandemic is a wake-up call for people to focus on what is important and to align that with their daily actions. And, for world leaders from businesses to politicians to reflect on what is important and the impact their actions can have on the world. Collectively, we have the responsibility to leave a better world for the next generations to come. My message to business leaders is to drive positive shifts towards wellbeing

and sustainability in their companies. I hope that companies encourage increased “work from anywhere” flexibility, volunteering and supporting mental wellbeing in the workplace as an integral part of their sustainability policies. The young generation is expecting this of companies and pushing them to be braver and more progressive. And, overall, I ask all leaders to align with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These goals are like a guidebook and my hope is that they will be embraced by all. Changing an organization, a company, a country or even the world begins with the first step of changing yourself, as a leader, and believing that you can make a difference. PGMAG: As a very successful entrepreneur, what are some of the steps needed to aid business recovery during this challenged times? KK: We have all experienced it: the coronavirus is affecting everyday life around the world. To survive, businesses must adjust to the “new normal”. Businesses and entrepreneurs must pivot and adjust strategies. They must listen to the needs of their customers.

In every crisis, there are opportunities. Companies are taking advantage of this new awareness and are turning to “greening” the experience for their online customers. They are sharing their sustainability journeys and offering eco-tips to the consumers while they shop online. They can also capture consumers at checkout and raise money for sustainable causes. For example, rePurpose Global offers the Everyday Plastic Neutral Program that gives customers an option to offset the plastic content in their orders for less than $1.

In every crisis, there are opportunities. Companies are taking advantage of this new awareness and are turning to “greening” the experience for their online customers. They are sharing their sustainability journeys and offering eco-tips to the consumers while they shop online. PGMAG: What should leaders be doing to address the challenge of 'diversity and inclusion' in the workplace? KK: Leaders, instead of asking why programs designed to increase diversity and inclusion in the workplace fail, should be asking what is actually working. I believe systems need to continuously evolve to positively impact diversity and inclusion. Below are a few pointers for leaders to address this challenge in the workplace. I believe there is no single solution to diversity and inclusion. For example, when it comes to maximizing effectiveness and profits, many businesses deploy a set of strategies of data collection and comparisons over time.

Why not do the same for issues of diversity and inclusion? A focus on data collection and examining change periodically and comparing it to other organizations can result in increased transparency and accountability in these issues. Also, organizations are complex and have different internal cultures and dynamics. It does not make sense to take a onesize-fits-all policy and apply it across multiple organizations. Sometimes organizations have experts design programs that are then deployed to the mangers. I believe this type of strategy often lacks reality. Do these programs fit into the way managers already work or do they now add something into their already busy days? Organizations should involve managers from the start in the design process. This can increase buy-in and smooth the implementation process for a more sustainable and long lasting solution. I encourage everyone to get involved, research and join a group that can support them when they are faced with situations in the work place. For example, I joined the Female Quotient who’s mission is to advance equality in the workplace through the power of collaboration. They bring visibility to women, activate

I am inspired how this crisis has shown the resilience and creativity of humanity. Online shopping and food delivery services are exploding, vendors are rethinking their distribution and entire supply chains are becoming more efficient. There is also a silver lining: at the beginning of the pandemic, we saw how nature can recover when human impact is reduced. From the canals in Venice to the air quality in Los Angeles, mother nature took the opportunity to get back to equilibrium. I feel it is the beginning of a greater awakening and it is bringing more focus to sustainable business practices.

solutions for change, and create metrics for accountability. They support both the organizations and the women in it on their journey to equality. PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? KK: There are several books that have shaped my thinking and that I would recommend to everyone. First, the Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl. This book highlights how humans are survivors. But only humans who have a purpose survive the longest. This book encourages you to find your purpose and it will make you stop complaining about the things that don’t matter. It’s an intense read but well worth it. One of the books that helped shape my business and personal relationships is How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. Whether you like people or not you have to learn how to become more influential to live a better life and to build meaningful businesses. As a super connector and someone who thrives in the event and conference arena, this book taught me the importance of taking time to genuinely

Life is a journey and we learn, we adjust and we evolve for the better. Adopting a mindset of constant and neverending improvement can allow you to reflect and make adjustment along the way while still meeting you target or goals. connect with people and take an interest in their lives. Making people feel important, remembering their names and delivering praise and complements are all simple tools which helped me to build more meaningful relationships. The third book I recommend is one that set me on a journey of adventure and discovery is the The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. This book is one of the best-selling books in history, with over 65 million copies in 56 different languages. The story of Santiago, the shepherd boy on a journey to realize his “Personal Legend” has inspired people all over the world to live their dreams. I recommend this book to everyone who has dreams of living an adventure. Why? Because life is an adventure. There are two lessons I learned from this book that I carry with me. One, is

being present. There’s no point dwelling in the past and letting it define you, or getting lost and anxious about the future. The present moment is when you’re in the field of possibility. It’s where the adventure and magic happens. How you engage with the present moment will ultimately direct your life. The second lesson I learned is that your success has a ripple effect. That’s what alchemists do. They show that when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too. Becoming a better version of yourself creates a ripple effect that benefits everything around you including your family, friends, community and lifestyle. PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? KK: Life is a journey and we learn, we adjust and we evolve for the better. Adopting a mindset of constant and never-ending improvement can allow you to reflect and make adjustment along the way while still meeting you target or goals. Having had the opportunity to collaborate with celebrity brands such as George Foreman, the Marley family

However, I also learned how challenging it was for celebrities to stay focused and align with the right partners. Everyone wanted to work with them. The sheer number of projects being pitched and opportunities for partnerships was overwhelming. This, coupled with the reality that in some cases people just wanted to use the celebrity’s fame for their own benefit without regard for the celebrity's vision, let alone their best interest. By adopting the mindset of constant and never-ending improvement, I was able to adjust strategies and approaches to best support celebrities such as Akon. I learned it was important to become a trusted advisor and confident in providing honest feedback to avoid any missteps. That wisdom comes with experience and the trust has to be earned. It helps to really get to know your client so it becomes second nature to advise on strategy that aligns with their values.

PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self? KK: I would tell my younger self to spend more time tapping into her passions and aligning with a purpose in life verses a career. I spent a decade in the small kitchen appliance industry working on brands such as Oster, Mr. Coffee, Sunbeam and George Foreman. Although these years gave me an understanding of how corporate America works and allowed me to hone my business skills in new product development and marketing, I was not passionate about the products. I learned that it is so much easier to sell something you are passionate about in life. When you are aligned with your passions, you automatically jump out of bed with liveliness and enthusiasm. After participating in a Date With Destiny and Business Mastery event with Tony Robbins, it became clear to me that I no longer wanted a job, but to pursue a purpose. I learned that aligning my personal values with my purpose or career values in life would energize me and bring passion to my daily activities. This is when I made a decision to align with projects and companies that would have a positive impact on people

or the planet. This is when I created Konscious Konsulting. Konscious Konsulting helps me to achieve a purpose of positive impact by guiding people, companies or foundations to reach their goals of changing the world efficiently through business strategies and strategic partnerships. Everything we do aligns with our values and vision while leaving positive footsteps with our clients and their end users. My business colleagues joke that I challenge them to “konsult their own konscious” before making decisions. PGMAG: Thank you so very much for your time. It has been a pleasure to learning from you today. KK: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure to share with you and I hope my journey inspires others to be purpose driven and find creative ways to leave a positive impact in the world. INTERVIEW WITH:

JAMES MICHAEL LAFFERTY (JML) PGMAG: James, welcome to today's interview . JML: Thanks for having me. It’s an honour. PGMAG: You are a unique professional with over 30 years of experience in leadership, sports, business and capacity building. As a leader I believe you have encountered numerous challenges whilst climbing the ladder of success, how were you able to navigate through some of those challenges? JML: I am a firm believer in the principle that, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. I have had a life full of adversity. Losing my

parents relatively young. Having a baby at 22 years old and starting a family whilst still in University. I was working 4 jobs, including digging ditches to lay sewer lines, to survive. It’s a long list. And all of it conditioned me for larger and larger challenges and obstacles. And it’s ironic. I went through so much hardship, and as I became a parent, I was so focused on ensuring my kids did not endure the hardships I did. And now I realize, by depriving them of adversity, I didn’t do them any favours and I actually deprived them of the very experiences that shaped me. I acted out of love but only now in retrospect do I realize it was a mistake.

PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? JML: I am a big believer in mainly biographies of real people who achieved real things. I don’t have much time for books written by so-called experts who frankly haven’t achieved much of anything. I want the real deal. So the books that have done it for me: --Jobs—The biography of Steve Jobs of Apple. --Touch the Top of the World. The autobiography of my dear friend Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to summit Mt. Everest. This set the benchmark for me of the epitome of

PGMAG: What are some of the vital keys to building a successful business? JML: I think fundamentally great businesses bring real value to it’s customers. Great businesses are hence customercentric and put the customer at the heart of everything they do. They execute flawlessly. Great businesses believe, “The only strategy the customer sees is execution”. Brilliant strategy,

PGMAG: How would you describe your style of leadership? JML: I am at heart a servant leader. I am here to help my people, to serve them, help them grow and be successful. They are not here to serve me, which is unfortunately the approach many weak leaders take. Having said this, I do hold very high standards and I believe people are happiest when they have sacrificed and achieved lofty goals. This only comes from setting high standards. So whilst I know

sometimes my people may resent the standards I set, over the long term they are happier as a result, and they are better prepared for what the world has to throw at them. PGMAG: As a global influencer, what is your message for world leaders? JML: I would honestly say, “Forget the politics and the self-interest and just lead!” The Covid-19 crisis has brought to the forefront just how few true leaders we have in the world among those who are in positions of authority across many countries. It’s sad. Some of the performances we see today, if in the business world

and difficult situations. PGMAG: Who would be your ideal lunch date, and what would be the topic of discussion? JML: My favorite saying is, “ A principle is not a principle until it costs you something”. I have lived my life adhering 99% of the time to the principle of “do the right thing”. In this light, I would love to have lunch with Mandela. How he stood by his principle of righteousness and stayed in prison over 20 years! strength of conviction is just a sight to behold. PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? JML: Well, in terms of the aforementioned principle of “Do the right thing”, I fell down hugely once. I was married happily for 25 years. In year 26 I moved away from my family out of necessity and I ended up lonely and I cheated on my wife. She didn’t deserve this. This singular act of stupidity and weakness unleashed a chain of events that led to my marriage collapsing. And altering the course of my life. I am in a good place now and

happy, and I am very lucky. But if I could go back and un-do the damage, I would. But this is the reality. Sometimes the damage is so great, that saying “I am sorry” over and over again doesn’t fix it. Things can be broken beyond repair. All I can do now is learn from this; and be resolute it will never happen again. And it won’t. PGMAG: Finally, what would you say to your younger self?

Ukpeme is an award-winning author, a lawyer, speaker, Ambassador for peace, song writer, amongst others, she is the Executive Secretary of Mediators and Advocates of peace (LAMPAIX) PGMAG: Ukpeme, great to have you on today's interview. UAO: Peace greetings! Thank you. PGMAG: You are a great advocate for peace, and you hold so many other positions not mentioned in our introduction. Please briefly tell us about your work and some of the values you have added in the world. UAO: As an Ambassador for Peace (title awarded by the Universal Peace Federation), peace is an integral part of my endeavours. In

addition to peace, I integrate organizational excellence, sterling leadership, resilience, self-esteem, integrity, ethics, sustainable collaborations, into my work. I believe in the power of individual action, collective action, and global sustainability. If we apply good values to our work and work with dedication, the world will experience beneficial human interactions, and a viable Earth system. As a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, as well as Women, Peace, and Security Network, I participated in outreach programmes, committees,

campaigns, organization, fostered collaborations for the betterment of women, and so on. At Mediators & Advocates of Peace (LAMPAIX), where I am the Executive Secretary, 13 episodes of Lamp of Peace were produced, and broadcast by a radio station in Abuja, Nigeria. The program addressed societal issues that affect peace and gave guidance to lasting peace in our society. At LAMPAIX, we continue our devotion to the cause of building sustainable peace for development, and full enjoyment of human rights. I am the Founding Coordinator of Justice, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) — Catholic Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles Parish, Abuja. During my tenure as Coordinator, we embarked on peace projects: we produced peace pamphlets for distribution at the parish, visited Kuje Prison —in the Federal Capital Territory, where counsel was given to the inmates. Toiletries and devotionals were presented, as well as cash donation to cover payment of fines and bails for twenty-three inmates. I am actively engaged in The

Spirit of Peace initiative of African Views Organization, which is mainly to gather faith based leaders, and official representatives from cultural and spiritual backgrounds, to observe and partake in a cultural harmony forum, and to pray for spiritual healing of the whole society. I am involved in mediation, conflict prevention, conflict management, and conflict

resolution, within my family, and among individuals. After successfully reconciling persons involved in a protracted difficult case, I was referred to as “Peacemaker.” This experience is an example that peace is possible. It has also inspired my peace work. My zeal for peace propelled me to write my first book, The Values String: A book on Transitional Life, Compelling Fulfillment, and Profound Peace in year 2018. I am fostering the historic Jazz for Peace concert in Nigeria. Year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Jazz for Peace concert at the United Nations, which united Israeli, Palestinian and American Jazz Musicians. Now, it is time for them to come to Abuja, Nigeria for the very first time in year 2021, for a historic event to honour my peace causes, where Rick DellaRatta will perform a Live Concert and Worldwide Cybercast Event. Jazz for Peace is an American organization with the goal of promoting unity and peace across cultures, through the performance of music. The organization was founded by jazz pianist and vocalist — Rick DellaRatta.

I founded Guild of Adjudicators in Nigeria (GAIN), which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, established, among other objectives, to promote, facilitate and provide the determination of disputes by adjudication and alternative means of dispute resolution, other than by litigation. I am delighted, and inspired to collaborate with Donald Brown — a renowned sculptor, celebrated athlete, and fervent peace advocate, on The Millennium Monument. The Millennium Monument aims to position positive images from the African Diaspora to the world. This monumental cause promotes peace, through history, arts, and culture. I am the Convener of The Peace Agenda — a platform for peace enthusiasts to create a sustainable agenda, and action for peace. The Peace Agenda Summit was launched on September 21, 2019 with 17 speakers: Presenting Strategies for Achieving Both Personal and World Peace. One of the post-summit goals is to encourage people to identify their Peace Agendas. The Peace Agenda prompts everyone to do something for peace. I am collating The Peace Agenda of people across the world.

My zeal for peace propelled me to write my first book, The Values String: A book on Transitional Life, Compelling Fulfillment, and Profound Peace in year 2018. I advocate outstanding leadership. I am a recipient of Powerhouse Global Award — Justice for the People Advocate. I received the Golden Role Model Award, by Nigeria Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative, as an Icon of Humanitarian Service, in recognition and appreciation of my contribution to Peace, Youth and Women Empowerment, Service to Nigeria and Africa at large. I am also a recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award as a Visionary Leader, by Visioneers International, in recognition of my extraordinary contribution to create, invent and promote new ways of being and new solutions across the wide array of human activities, thus adding to humanity’s reservoir of human goodness. I am involved in other outstanding causes.

PGMAG: As a woman and a leader, how have you been able to overcome some of the challenges of life? UAO: Challenges are normal, and can be surmounted. Challenges can also provide opportunities. I have overcome some of the challenges I experienced by believing in the power of the Almighty, remaining focused, organized, and determined to achieve my goals, and collective goals. I also leverage my network for support. My ability to handle setbacks teaches me lessons in possibilities, resoluteness, the power of determination, focus,

I motivate people I lead to teach, learn, practice, and sustain non-violent conflict prevention, conflict management, and conflict resolution methods. Conflict is a part of life. Conflicts do not need to be violent. Constructive conflicts can provide opportunities for growth. Destructive conflicts should be avoided.

PGMAG: How would you describe your style of leadership? UAO: Whilst I strive for excellence, I know that perfection is impossible. My style of leadership is values-based leadership. I inspire myself to believe that as a leader, I can surmount

The inspiration for this song was mostly derived from my book — The Values String: A book on Transitional Life, Compelling Fulfillment, and Profound Peace. PGMAG: A lot of women feel marginalised - Especially in Africa. In your capacity as a key player in women empowerment, what are some of the steps women should take in order to live a life of fulfilment? UAO: This is an apt question. My extensive involvement in women empowerment and advancement present the numerous injustices that women in Africa suffer. Notable barriers to their fulfilment include, but not limited to educational, religious, political, social, and cultural factors. Women empowerment transcends financial empowerment. Education is a very viable empowerment tool. Despite the challenges that women face, a lot of women have risen above these setbacks, and are thriving. In order to live a fulfilled life, some of the steps women can

take include: Women need to enhance, and maintain their self-worth and integrity. Lawyers, and women in civic groups are encouraged to educate women on their rights, provided under the various laws. Lawyers are enjoined to be ready at all times to defend the rights of women, when their rights are about to be violated or are violated. Lawyers and women-focused organizations need to ensure that indigent women enjoy full access to justice. Women in governance need to ensure that laws and polices repugnant to women are repealed, and that harmful, discriminatory practices are eliminated. Violence in all forms must be eschewed. Awareness creation of the provisions of the laws prohibiting violence should be ongoing. Women are encouraged to organize enlightenment programmes, collaborate with stakeholders to disseminate laws, establish desks/offices to address cases of violence, and continue to advocate non-violence. Women are encouraged to

When given the opportunity to lead, women should prove themselves, and explore their collective power for success. Mentorship is a worthy initiative. Women are encouraged to present themselves as mentors or mentees for co-development. Women are encouraged to be voices for the voiceless, and to support each other. There are many ways to give: through one’s time, energy, resources, and so on.

PGMAG: What are the measures that need to be put in place by leaders, in order to aid the development of our children (boys and girls)? UAO: The family is a strong social unit. Every family member is encouraged to teach, and learn basic peacebuilding skills, uphold human rights education in the family, accord respect to each other as they interrelate by ensuring domestic violence, outright inequalities, oppression and injustice do not thrive in the family. Family education is very essential. When children learn lofty values in the family, they become advocates of societal development. Leaders also play roles in aiding the development of children. Leaders need to ensure that our children gain equal access to education. Education can equip children with other skills in addition to or in alternative to literacy. This underscores the efficacy of good quality education in its ramifications —formal, non-formal and informal. Leaders are urged to advocate and ensure that education is accessible to every child. This awareness will align their mindsets, which will then enable appropriate actions by their teams. Its equally

We are enabling organizations and individuals alike, by offering tools and tricks which transform their day to day. Our focus in current climate is on creating ‘Winning Mindsets’ As it’s the mindset shift which will lift our thoughts beyond the influences of stimuli (internal and external) and enable us to be the best versions of ourselves at any given point. Given the complexity and uniqueness of the subject, the cookie cutter approach is not the answer. We develop our

own bespoke programs, which are well researched, relevant to the current market needs, and are designed to create positive impact. Few key offerings include: • Winning Mindsets Program (7 workshops)- Creating environments where productivity thrives, where teams are fearless and unstoppable, where leaders are driven by passion and purpose and where we create MIND SETS and PARADIGM shift from 'Worrying to Winning' • Fusion Trainings (Complementing the skill training)- There are different areas in the Brain that aid in absorption, retention & memory of any skill. Through Fusion trainings, with simple techniques we enable participants to activate & ignite these elements in the brain. • Skill and Will (Subconscious programming)- To create self- driven, curious & agile minds we need to tap into the sub-conscious programming, enhance brain capacity and bring about an awareness to ones limiting fears & habits, in order to enable them to

Please throw some light on this saying. CCJ: Wow! I am delighted to see that my quote has led to a few positive thoughts and discussions. I truly believe that leaders should encourage their teams to bring their mind, heart & instinct to the workplace. And for others, this is how they should ‘show up’ at work, regardless of their work, office settings, sectors, etc… The work culture needs to be more than just the BRAIN and the SKILL. And we at Mātiti People are nurturing and promoting a culture where teams thrive using their innate abilities and will, to enable their skill and SHINE ON!

PGMAG: In your capacity as an advocate for diversity and inclusion, what are some of the measures needed to bridge the gap in the workplace? CCJ: In my experience it all starts with ‘Awareness’ and ‘Acceptance’. As soon as an organizations/ individuals are aware of the gender gap (in any form), and accept the need to adapt/ do more/ challenge their old practices as it relates to the diversity and inclusion agenda, etc… half the battle is won! Over the years, working with multiple organizations around the globe, its evident that these 2 are the biggest boulders that need maximum effort to turn, the rest than starts to roll. And this needs to be more than a lip service. The proof is in the effective implementation of identified measures. PGMAG: A lot of people are in the valley of decision due to the current global challenge. As a leader, what is your message for such individuals? CCJ: As the businesses around the world, slowly but surely, start to resume operations They will need to rethink their game (if not already)

Its not a moment of fear and anxiety, but a ‘beautiful opportunity to pivot, improvise and excel’! The culture we define in our organizations, households, businesses, now - will set the tone for the following several years. ‘Passion’ for what they (leaders/ decision makers) do, for their teams/loved ones, for the environment and all the associated factors + ‘Perseverance’ to make the difference, to not give up and to be the positive change…will enable them to steer through

these times beautifully. PGMAG: How do you create work/life balance amidst your busy schedule? CCJ: For me its like asking myself - how did you learn to sleep Funny, but we can simplify some age-old myths or complex practices, by just understanding a few things. For me, its: “Impact and Importance Vs Health and Growth” Its my secret mantra and when I plot the graph, I get the answers. PGMAG: We love to know what leaders around the world are reading, or what they have read that brought light into their lives. So, what are the top three books that changed your life? CCJ: Books have been dear to me and every read, every page has shaped me into a better person in some way. So my gratitude to all the writers and their beautiful work. My top 3 so far (and I choose to highlight these, as they are relevant to the current situations): Autobiography of a Yogi – by Paramhansa Yogananda The Power of Now

For me, its: “Impact and Importance Vs Health and Growth” – by Eckhart Tolle The Successful Investor – by William J. O’Neil PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self? CCJ: That you did very very well! You are a fighter, an unwavering optimist and strong yet humble person. You believed in miracles and created some on your own. Life isn’t about winning, but about learning & growing and in the bargain having a lot of fun! You slipped, failed, made mistakes, but never gave up. And you continued to rise, shine, thrive and did so with grace and poise. This isn’t over yet, and the best is yet to come. PGMAG: Finally, what makes you laugh?

CCJ: I am in a place in my life, where I find joy in the most simple pleasures, in day to day life. From looking at my small balcony garden bloom (on 42nd floor), to the smile from the server at the coffee shop nearby, to a beautiful sunset by the beach, it could be just about anything. I laugh from my heart and the energy reverberates in my entire body like a beautiful positive electric charge. Life is good! PGMAG: You have been a brilliant guest of this interview. POWERHOUSE GLOBAL MAGAZINE (PGMAG) INTERVIEW WITH:

SHERRY ANN DIXON (SD) Sherry Ann Dixon is the CEO and Founder of Women on the Crossroads. She is an award-winning journalist who has interviewed some of the world most influential men and women (Dead and alive). Some of her guests include: Sir Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher (Former British Prime Minister), Dr. Maya Angelou, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross and a host of others. She is a key player in the development of the black community in the UK. PGMAG: Sherry, it's a great honour to have you on today's interview SD: Oh thank you so much. I love this magazine so it's an honour for me to be interviewed. PGMAG: I salute you for your positive contribution to our community. As a global influencer, what are some of the strategies needed to enhance the development of our youths? SD: Young people are the driving force for all nations. With good education they provide the energy, hope and leadership needed for the future. Young people can become active members of society and contribute to the development of all countries if they are included. It’s important to ensure that youth have the means to become active participants so that they can drive the development of their respective countries. PGMAG: What are some of the lessons you

learned from your interactions with world leaders (Sir Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, and Dr. Maya Angelou)? SD: Dr. Maya Angelou’s teaching was an important lesson. Life rewards those who go out and do it, in whatever way they choose to do so. She insisted that we should not spend our lives living in anger and regret. She wanted us to learn about life, every day, and then go out and live rather than stay in depression. Sir Nelson Mandela taught me to never abandon hope. He said ‘the struggle is my life’ and he proved it. He also said ‘learn to how to forgive, draw a line under your past and move on’. One of the best points he made to me was too ‘bond by sharing experience’ and I believe that totally. We cannot learn if we are selfish. Margaret Thatcher, well she taught me leadership. I did not interview her personally, but was in a group of editors who were invited to a briefing which she addressed. This quote makes

me think about her leadership “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” If there are any certainties of leadership, it is that you will always have your critics – regardless of your intentions. The challenge is to carry on regardless and do your best. PGMAG: In one of your keynote address at the House of Lords and House of Parliament in London, you talked about "Why mentoring women is important and who is holding you back'. Please share

some insights on the two topics mentioned above. SD: My workshops are called Who’s Holding You Back? A question which we should all be asking ourselves and also providing guidance and encouragement to others, allowing ourselves to explore new ideas in confidence. It give us a chance to look more closely at ourselves, our issues, opportunities and what we want in life. Mentoring is about becoming more self aware, taking responsibility for your life and directing your life in the

direction YOU decide, rather than leaving it to chance. I believe in the art of mentoring, especially women and girls, because it’s a powerful personal development and empowerment tool. I truly believe that when the woman and girl child is mentored, that information is passed down and it is an effective way of helping people to progress. In their careers it is becoming increasingly more popular as its potential is realised. I believe it is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally sharing experiences, learning and followed by the mentee who them moves on

to teach others. My role in mentoring is to help others globally to realise that they too can become mentors therefore creating a worldwide transformation network, guiding the mentee, helping to find the right direction and encouraging them to develop solutions. PGMAG: What else could be done to support more women to become global influencers? SD: There are an estimated 12.3 million women-owned businesses in the US and women earned 60 percent of the master’s degrees. US women-owned businesses generate $1.8 trillion a year. 40% of US businesses are women-owned. Women started 1,821 net new businesses every day last year. In the UK, from the 22,257 businesses surveyed, approximately 7205 were launched by female entrepreneurs. This sets the number of UK businesses currently owned by women at 32.37%, highlighting a remarkable shift from four years ago when just 17% of founders were female. Clearly, the business world is no longer a ‘men's club’ and it shouldn’t be. Women entered the corporate management

world in the late 80s and have continued to climb the ranks ever since. But unfortunately, the glass ceiling still exists, and women are still facing challenges that men do not when advancing their careers. I think women need to speak up about their ideas and

their areas of expertise and leadership. We need to take more risks. No one becomes an influencer by playing it safe and we fall behind when it comes to risk-taking. Leave the fear of failure on the doormat! Many can push forward as confident

leaders and achieve the highest ambitions and finally the need to find mentors. One of the best ways to become a great leader is by learning from others who have been there and done that. A mentor can guide a woman through her career path and might even be able to open doors that could lead to a leadership position PGMAG: In your capacity as someone who is highly respected in the black community, what is your message for world leaders? SD: Listen to our young people. Engage them in your communities because if they are the heads of the future. I find that they alienate the young, trying to make them follow the heads of the older people. Bring them in, teach and motivate them, and owe will build future leaders with character and strength. PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? SD: I have so many but these three I have read recently and have made a difference to me and my teachings: YOU are a BADASS. He is the Author of The Power of Habit. MINDSET, THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS, How we can learn to fulfill our potential - Carol S. Dwek, Ph.D. PGMAG: What are some of the steps needed to support the boy-girl child development? SD: Each child has their own personality and responds to experiences differently. Just like adults, children may have outgoing, shy, or even tempered natures. Every

parent or caregiver should learn the child’s personality and treat the child in a positive and caring manner that agrees to their special personality. It is critical to nurturing emotional growth . By understanding each child’s personality, you can help them to succeed. There is no one size fits all when it comes to children. Albeit that it may be hard on parents who have more than one child, but finding time to learn about each individual child’s needs is the best way to cope with their growth and future success. PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? SD: I would have studied psychology at a younger age. I would have also gone on to do my PhD, although its still possible to do so now. But in saying this, I have learnt the hard way and maybe learning hard on the way up has made me who I am today. So why change that eh? PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self? SD: YOU ARE ENOUGH!! PGMAG: And finally, what is your message for women of the world?

www.powerhouseglobalmag.com

SD: Women are still fighting for their rights, and that is so unfair. The world needs women, that much is clear. But most importantly the world needs to treat women with the same dignity and respect that it treats men. It is truly unfair that around the world, women face inequality in terms of pay, employment, and even ownership over their own bodies. Men and women should get paid equally for work of equal value and share the care work at home. But we as women have to stand up and convince our governments to be committed to taking strategic, bold action in areas of concern: Poverty, education, health, violence, power and

decision making, human rights, and most of all participation in political life. Finally, we as women have to educate the men around us that it is time to change. We are the teachers and nurturers of the world, so stand up whenever possible and enable our young people who are the voice of the future. PGMAG: Thank you for sharing your brilliance with us. SD: Thank you for giving me a chance to speak my truth. I enjoyed answering these questions and hope that I motivate others to follow their dream.

IZABELA LUNDBERG (IL) PGMAG: Izabela, great to have you on today's interview IL: Likewise, great to be here with you, Powerhouse Global Magazine (PGMAG) team! PGMAG: You are a woman on a mission to create over a hundred million Legacy Leaders worldwide. Please tell us a little bit about your organisation (Legacy Leaders) IL: Yes, I am indeed! This may sound like a challenging goal to reach, but with over 7.5 billion people currently globally, strategic partnerships, and many digital platforms - I am very optimistic. But the bigger question is why I am focusing so much on doing exactly that.

Izabela Lundberg is the Founder of Legacy Leaders Institute. She is a Forbes contributing writer and coaches Council Members. She is also a movie Producer, Podcaster, Bestselling author and a humanitarian.

40 NOVEMBER 2020

TODAY, we have a tremendous shortage of leaders worldwide that lead how our world needs us to: with the vision and impact of our actions on the long term instead of short term success. Instead, we should be asking ourselves what our legacy will be at the end of our life? What will we leave behind for future generations? For the world? PGMAG: How can we (leaders) create sustainable solutions to aid economic recovery amidst Covid-19?

www.powerhouseglobalmag.com

IL: Thank you for asking this very critical and timely question. Today, we have so much data to reflect on past crises and lessons learned or to ask experts. With my extensive experience in crisis and disaster interventions, we should always prioritize Human Welfare and Human Capital. Why? Because it is the right and human thing to do. Human Capital will aid economic recovery! So please treat your people well. stability and continuation, and demonstrating hope and compassion on a daily basis extended to everyone. From this foundation, we have an excellent opportunity to not only survive but thrive by pivoting, adjusting, simplifying, innovating, or adapting toward new ecosystems and an effective transition to the postpandemic economy. PGMAG: Wow! You also produce movies. Please share with us a little bit about your movies and the motivation behind such an achievement. IL: Yes, I do! Through Legacy Leaders Productions, our film productions offering is a branch

to the Legacy Leaders Institute umbrella, aiming to deliver tremendous impact worldwide. It allows us to reach more people worldwide through powerful storytelling of the original and unique content that is entertaining, educational, engaging and empowering. It is a great way to collaborate with exceptional talent and creatives around the world. My first full feature film as an Executive Producer, Hope For The Holidays, is coming out this Holiday Season, featuring Robert LaSardo and Doug Hutchison in addition to other great talents. Further, I had an opportunity

to collaborate earlier this year with Russell Smith and Steve Tappin in Producing CEO Master Class, featuring a series of CEO interviews ranging from Prezi, Hootsuite, Logitech, SkyBridge Capital, and many more. My current international full feature film and documentary project will be epic, and I can't wat to share more in months to come. PGMAG: Girl! You must have adventurous mindset considering some of your achievements. You speak six languages, and you have travelled to over 45 countries - impressive. Could this be one of the reasons behind your advocacy for diversity and inclusion? IL: Yes, absolutely! I had the privilege to work directly with people from over 100 countries for more than 15 years in Sweden and the US. My work at a non-profit agency rehabilitating genocide, torture, war trauma, human trafficking, and rape victims and working in the refugee camps provided one of the most valuable perspectives and learning opportunities beyond advising and consulting for Fortune 500 companies or my studies.

42 NOVEMBER 2020

These experiences gave me the most profound connection with people different from me and my upbringing through a beautiful exchange of trust, respect, compassion, kindness, empathy, and love through the storytelling of life experiences that I would not have access to otherwise. Even my trips for pleasure and fun allowed me to discover parts of the world as a curious explorer, often venturing on the roads less traveled. As a result, I was pioneering in designing and developing the Diversity and Inclusion curriculum in the late '90s and early '00s that I also taught at the University of Denver for several years. This is some of the most rewarding work that I have done so far. PGMAG: What are the top three books that changed your life? IL: It is so hard to narrow down the top three, but for sure, one of them in my early years would be "How To Win Friends & Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. It is a must have and a must reread timeless book. The second one is "You2: A High Velocity Formula for Multiplying Your Personal Effectiveness in Quantum

Through Legacy Leaders Productions, our film productions offering is a branch to the Legacy Leaders Institute umbrella, aiming to deliver tremendous impact worldwide. Leaps" by Price Pritchett. I highly recommend reading, rereading, and referencing this small yet mighty book as often as possible as a significant mindset shift and your quantum leap forward. The third would be "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book)" by Don Miguel Ruiz, a cornerstone of exceptional leadership and personal freedom. I use these agreements with my team and it is a beautiful way to create a healthy, empowering working environment. PGMAG: What is your message for those struggling with depression, and what are some of the steps they might need to take in order to recover from such life challenge? IL: Depression is a serious

More openly you speak about it with trusted family and friends, it will help you manage it as best as possible. Seeking professional help and support by loved ones is a sign of strength, not weakness. Following the expert's advice and recommendations are crucial. Discovering and rediscovering what makes you feel good, happy, motivated, and "under control" will help you manage it well and, ultimately, overcome it. If things ever escalate to suicidal thoughts, call your trusted support consisting of at least two or three people you can get at any time. Please do not ever give up, however hard it might get! Life is not easy or fair, but it is so worth it! Please know that the world needs you and that you are loved more than you can imagine. PGMAG: If you knew what you know now, what would you do differently? IL: Life experience and wisdom are nonreplaceable, as well as

great advisors, coaches and mentors. I would seek their help as early as possible to learn and accomplish things faster and more effectively. It would also allow me to navigate better politics and a corporate world, especially in the USA. I would be my best advocate and not allow or tolerate poor leadership, bad politics, being overworked, underpaid, disrespected, harassed, or abused in the workplace. I would fight as much for myself as I did for years for others. PGMAG: What would you say to your younger self? IL: Wow! Another excellent question that we should ask ourselves often. I see this from multiple perspectives, personal and professional. Personally, life is not easy or fair, but it is so worth it! You are so much stronger, resilient, and capable than you may think. You are beautiful and great just the way you are. Professionally, go for all the opportunities, dreams, fail often, keep going, and don't worry much about the future or unknown. Everything always will work out in the best possible way for you. Trust your gut and instincts - and you will do great. Self-discovery is your most significant gift to you and the world.

PGMAG: Finally, how can we help you to achieve your 'One Hundred Million Legacy Leaders' mission? IL: That is an excellent question - thank you for asking! Opportunity to share our work, collaborating, joining our movement, and engaging on a global scale are just some of many ways to do that. I think this an excellent and timely opportunity to show what is possible by sharing our knowledge while leading with value. PGMAG: Thank you once again for your time. IL: You are very welcome! Thank you very much for having me on Powerhouse Global Magazine. PGMAG: Please share your links with us. SIX A DAY FOR SOUND SLEEP SHEILA BALGOBIN

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT (AND SLEEP) While we are well aware that a minimum of 5 fruits and vegetables a day is essential for good health, my list of 6 of day will actually help you to sleep better! There are six categories to choose from:

• • • • • •

Fruits Vegetables Nuts/Grains Snacks Protein Drinks

But before I share some suggestions with you from each of the above categories, here’s a few tips of what to AVOID eating before bedtime:

1. 2. 3. 4.

High fat fried foods Highly salted foods Spicy food Alcohol

Now for a look at the six categories:

GET FRUITY While too much fruit isn’t recommended (sugar is sugar is

sugar, even in natural form!) – small servings of fruit before sleeping can make a real difference:

Fruit

Amount

Effect

Kiwi

1-2 medium size fruit

In a study people fell asleep 45% faster and slept 13% longer

Pineapple

0.5-1 cup diced fruit

Research has shown that melatonin production increased by a whopping 266% when pineapple was consumed

Figs

1/4 - ½ cup

Figs are full of calcium, iron and magnesium, which help increase time slept

Watermelon

2.5 cm (1 in) thick slice

Contains choline/lycopene, which help reduce sleep disturbances

EAT YOUR VEGGIES Vegetables are not only an essential part of your 5 a day – but they can also be useful in helping you catch some zzzz’s. Try a few servings of the suggestions below:

Sweet Potato: Sweet potatoes really do encourage sweet sleep – full of potassium, magnesium and calcium, 1 sweet potato can both encourage relaxation and lower blood pressure.

nuts, or roughly a handful can boost your ability to fall and stay asleep! Walnuts: Long considered “brain food” (due to the it’s appearance to the two halves of the brain), walnuts contain

Lettuce: Lettuce contains the phytonutrient Lactucarium, which encourages relaxation and sleep.v2 cups is all you need. An English folk remedy recommends making tea with chopped lettuce leaves for restful sleep. Kale: Kale is full of calcium which is a precursor for the production of the amino acid typtophan, which encourages melatonin production. Melatonin is one of the main “sleep hormones” – serotonin is the other. 2 cups of kale are sufficient to help you to fall asleep.

50 NOVEMBER 2020

USE YOUR NUT(S) Nuts – and grains too - aren’t just for the holidays – and it’s amazing what a handful can do for your sleep; 28g (1 oz) of

several vitamins and Omega-3, which boosts the production of melatonin. Almonds: A handful of almonds provide 19% of the

daily recommended amount of magnesium, which can relieve insomnia and stress.

HEALTHY SNACKS – IT’S NOT AN OXYMORON Snacks CAN be healthy – if you take a bit of care in what you choose. Two of my favourite snacks are on this list….though I actually eat them for other reasons! Dark Chocolate: Favourite number 1 – I eat dark chocolate not only because I prefer the taste, but the active ingredient, Theobroma, is excellent as an expectorant and soothes asthmatic symptoms (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!). However, it is also full of magnesium, which helps regulate our circadian (day/ night) rhythms for better sleep. Popcorn: My other favourite snack – as long as it isn’t loaded with butter, salt, caramel, etc. it’s actually quite a healthy snack – it provides roughage for the digestion and a little bit can fill you up for several hours. As a sleep aid, studies on sleep and popcorn consumption indicated that it encouraged people to sleep longer. Hummus: Half to one cup of this Middle Eastern favourite

contains folate, a B vitamin found in the chickpeas it is made from. Folate helps regulate sleep patterns and keeps our body clock on track.

PROTEINS – THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF GOOD SLEEP There is a huge debate over proteins these days – and whether we need to reduce or even eliminate the consumption of proteins from animal sources. Whichever side of the debate you are on, there are both meat and non-meat options available that can help with good sleep. Whole Grains: Whole grains, e.g. brown rice, rye or oats are made of complex carbohydrates, which stimulate insulin release. This encourages the production of amino acids such as tryptophan to be

Additionally, oats contain B6, which contain anti-stress properties. A serving of oat porridge with cinnamon or a slice of rye bread with soup or brown rice with dinner can help you to better sleep. Fish: 2-3 servings (283 g/10 oz) is enough to encourage better sleep; in a study of people who ate salmon for 6 months, it NOVEMBER 2020

was noted that they fell asleep 10 minutes faster than people eating other meats. Tofu: Another non-meat offering, 2 servings (1/2 cup) of tofu helped research subjects to sleep longer and have a better quality of sleep. Cheese and Crackers: This surprised me – but cheese and crackers can help reduce insomnia by encouraging the production of serotonin.

EAT, DRINK…AND BE SLEEPY Juices – especially if fresh

– are a wonderful way to take in nutrients without too much stress on your digestive system. However, if you have issues with waking at night due to a full bladder – you may want to avoid having any liquid six hours before you go to bed! Goji Berry: In a study conducted, 70% of the subjects in a research study found that they woke up more easily, while 50% stated they felt less tired. 118ml or 4 oz of this Chinese superfood can get you sleeping and waking up refreshed. Passionflower: Called maracujá in Brazil, I can attest personally to the effectiveness of it, in whatever form you

have it! It is especially good for children, as it is very mild. Passionflower tea or juice can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep. Tart/Sour Cherry Juice: 1 cup of this juice increased the time slept 90 minutes longer in a study conducted with adults over a two week period.

Powerful Global Women Foundation (Powerhouse Charity) was founded in 20l6 in Nigeria, West Africa, by Lady Anita Duckworth-Bradshaw. The core objective of this organization is to transform the lives of women and children, through various projects centred around the need of the service group. In 20l6 Lady Anita single handedly fed over 400 children as part of “project feed l000 children globally”, and held an empowerment conference for the women. Through this project, so many women have gone to do great things with the knowledge they gained from the event. She recently held a life transforming event for women in Lagos, Nigeria as part of International women’s month celebration 20l8. The turnout was very encouraging. She is working towards supporting more families to keep their children and wards in school through” project back-to-school” starting in September 20l8. We are seeking for global support from individuals and organisations who would love to be a part of this service to humanity.
