The Winter months are usually filled with mixed blessings. It's the time of the year when everything can fall into place, or fall apart. People gather to celebrate oneness with their loved ones, others walk away from what no longer serve their purpose.

For us at the Powerhouse Global HQ, it's time to take inventory and plan for the years ahead. It's time for us to say thank you to all of you for standing by us through the years. Thank you for supporting our global work

I wish you a great celebration - Christmas especially, and a very prosperous New Year.

MY OUTLOOK FOR 2023

The past two, three years have brought unparalleled challenges for many. And, as we close 2022 and embark on the new year, I am so full of hope for 2023. This upcoming year is about embracing our dreams no matter how big they may be. Often time, we hesitate to reach for the stars because of self-doubt and fears. Well, I urge that we make 2023 the year that we vanquish our fears, empower ourselves to think big and set ridiculously big goals. Our pledge should be to treat one another with civility. Let us make this new year about celebrating our differences while we support one another’s endeavors.

As leaders, let us advocate for Diversity, Inclusion and Equity in a manner that demand accountability from the organizations. Let it not be just a slogan on corporations’ resumes, but rather a true expectation for positive change. And as leaders, let us be relationship builders and prioritize leadership and talent development to avoid quiet quitting and burnout. Foster an atmosphere for creative thinking and be open to new innovative ideas and solutions. You never know from whom they may be emerging. So, give everyone the space to speak their voice and listen. It is our responsibility as leaders to keep a sense of curiosity and be engaged.

I urge for us all a more generous heart in 2023. Not only to share our wealth but our time with others. Sponsor a High School student to help him/her navigate to his/her potential. Give yourself permission to be more humble. We are too often caught up in trying to impress others in order to validate our worth. We are always worthy. Let us appreciate and savor the moments spent with friends and loved ones. Do not take it for granted. Be purposeful with your words; use them to uplift others’ spirits. And most definitely, in 2023, let us be more mindful of self-care. Take more time to read. Immerse yourself in a good book and allow yourself to be transported to a different world and be inspired by a good story. I recommend the following two books: Raceless by Georgina Lawton and Mirrors by Eduardo Galeano. Use every opportunity to network. Don’t be shy and do not second-guess yourself. I am guilty of this myself. Realize the other person may be just as hesitant.

I am venturing into 2023 with the most optimistic and positive outlook, dedicated to self-growth, to inspire, and to make as many connections as possible.

3 WAVES OF WELLNESS

MINA KAKAIYA

Sharing my thoughts on wellness has been a personal life long journey in enabling myself and others to find their own inner wellness through mentoring, coaching and training. What has also been a great help was developing wellbeing programmes in the workplace and across health and social care and non-forprofit sectors of mental health, HIV and domestic violence.

By bringing awareness to improve others personal mental wellness, I realised that our source of wellbeing is innate within us and it is fundamentally our true natural state of being, that is in a continual state of change and transformation.

Wellness in essence is an emotional state of unconditional self-love and

appreciation that is eroded or lost and found again along our life journey.

Our sense of who we are and our values, believes, attitudes and behaviours are moulded by our past experiences, family situation, culture, education and life experiences. Often our wellness then gets lost or what gets in the way of our wellness and happiness is

HEALTH & WELLNESS

pleasing and conforming to the wider cultural pressures and norms we begin to adhere to. Pandering to needs and wants of others hence neglecting our own. Experiences of loss or trauma in different areas of lives such as loved ones, health, money and purpose.

We then try to find it again, and for many of us through developing unhelpful and negative thought patterns, believes, fears and habits such as addictions, self-harm, lack of self-worth, low expectations and negative perceptions about self, others and the world around us.

The 3 waves of wellness is an approach which enables individuals to begin to become aware, move and practice towards nurturing their true inner wellness or “inner me”.

We are all born from water and our wellness journey is a personal one of self-discovery, which is unique to each one of us. Like the waves, our life experiences come in cycles of ebbs and flows, bringing crests of positive high waves and negative low crashing waves. Wellness like the waves is

not fixed but flexible, forever dynamic, evolving and changing and to embrace all aspects of our mind and body and by adopting an attitude of inner kindness and self-love.

When I run my wellness sessions I ask the participants to describe what wellness and wellbeing means to them and what it feels like. The general responses are feelings of happiness energetic, and confident, joy, and content, having clarity, safety and security, loved, appreciated, kindness and satisfaction. When asked what un-wellness

or poor well-being feels like, responses such as feeling of fear, anger, dissatisfaction, trapped, no choice, despair, not being good enough, failure, judgemental of self or others, blame, guilt, duty, responsibilities, not having enough or lack of, clarity, time, money, negative relationships or purpose.

Like the waves, we come in or out of wellness on a daily basis as we experience life and things that disrupt our wellness state. So wellness is about changing your inner experience from the external situation in the way we think and feel about the things and the quality of the thoughts we choose to pay attention to and focusing on doing more of what feels good to you with an attitude of self-appreciation.

THE 3 WAVES TO WELLNESS

The first wave of AwarenessNoticing your feelings and thoughts, about any given situation you are experiencing. What are the stories you are telling yourself about the situation? We often told not to show our emotions as it

perceived as a sign of weakness and vulnerability. However, recognising the value of your feelings as your inner guidance systems is an indicator of your level of wellness at that moment. It’s a bit like a radio and noticing which station and song are you creating, listening and paying attention too! Is it the tunes of wellness or tunes of un-wellness that you tuned into right now? Noticing what the stories you are telling yourself first thing in the morning and throughout the day. Our daily life experiences evoke certain negative and positive thoughts and feelings all the time and we all deal and respond emotionally differently to the same situation as we all hold differing opinions.

experiences and we have the ability to change and control our inner experiences of thoughts and feelings about the situation.

The Greek philosopher Epictetus (55- 135AD) said….”It is not things in themselves which trouble us, but the opinions we have about these things”.

We often treat our states of mind as absolute reality, when actually, we each react differently to the same events.

For instance, I had been fearful of dogs and particularly Alsatians for many years as I was chased by one when I was a child. Then recently I came into an encounter with an Alsatian at a friend’s home over a few days celebrating a family wedding and this Alsatian was so placid and friendly that my perceptions and fears around this breed of dog changed. So noticing how we label our past

If we question our thought processes, we can change the way we respond to the world around us so that we can have a better life. By noticing our own self-limiting thoughts and believes and recognising that our own personal attitudes and believes are your own and different from others which is often either blocking or enhancing our wellness at any given moment in time.

The second wave of Allowingby choosing to challenge and change our current thoughts and believes and focusing on more about by caring the way we feel. Gently allowing

ourselves to shift our attention to thoughts and moods from a place of dissatisfaction to satisfaction. Therefore, easing off the pressure on yourself and doing more of what makes you feel better or good to you right now. Focusing away from what’s lacking or negative aspects of your current life and towards positive aspects of your life that can improve your mood and make you feel better. Have you noticed when you keep focusing on the negative things in your life they become bigger and bigger and vice versa when you focus on the more positive aspects of your life the better you begin to feel?

After my redundancy, I decided to do Master in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) full time in one year. However, I did not anticipate the level of stress it would cause me and the reality of writing 3 essays in a 3 months deadline seemed very daunting to me at the time and then I started to feel increasingly worried and anxious and the panic set in with feelings of overwhelmed, fear, doubt. My old negative belief about myself crept in of

www.powerhouseglobalmag.com DEC 2022 # ISSUE 41 11 HEALTH & WELLNESS

not being clever enough and good enough and the fear of failure and I became tearful all the time and found it difficult to eat or sleep or focus. I was at a breaking point and then made a decision and talked myself into telling myself to let go and do the best I can and if I failed my essays I would drop out the course as it was not the end of the world. At that moment of relaxing and easing the pressure from myself from my current reality and shifting my negative perceptions and believes from fear to hope and optimism, I passed my Masters with flying colours! My biggest learning lesson I received from doing my Master was realising that the impossible was possible!

that uplift, support and inspire you.

• Giving back and by doing things for others. Often random acts of kindness can make us feel better.

• Having hope and optimism that things will improve and change and appreciation of the good things you have in your life right now. Living in the present moment enjoying the full experience. Often, we are in autopilot and so in our planning, worrying mode and so we fail to notice the wonderful things around such as the birds or trees, the sky, clouds and stars, or savour the flavours from the food we eat.

Ways to take yourself out of your own head:

• Awareness of your inner mind chatter and noticing if it is helpful or unhelpful, you’re negative self-talk.

• Practicing the process of quieting your mind through simple activities that help stop the momentum of the inner critical voice or from the unpleasant experience for a while, by having a

• Doing things the make you feel good, whether it’s pampering yourself, having a lying, baking, dancing, or listening to music and learning or taking up a new interest or hobby.

• Taking care of your body by eating better, getting a good night sleep and exercise that you enjoy doing, whether it’s walking, cycling, swimming, sports activities or going to a gym.

• Connecting with people

The third wave of Awesomeness –is about unlocking and knowing your true “inner me” or awesomeness that has the limitless potential to create and the power to choose and change the course of your life and acknowledging your own ongoing journey of transformation is in constant seek of wellness that is forever changing and growing. It is also about truly accepting and being

comfortable with who you are with an attitude of being kind to yourself and appreciating all aspects of yourselves. We are often our own biggest critic.

• So it about moving away from self-judgment and criticism of others.

• Shifting towards feelings of worthiness and deserving and stop comparing ourselves to others.

• Accepting that we are all unique with our own skills, talents, and abilities and are always evolving in our own ways.

• • Discovering and honouring what is important and matters to you by reconnecting with your passion and purpose, no matter how big or small.

• • Honouring my “inner me” by appreciating where you are right now with the attitude of inner kindness and self-love.

9 SMART MONEY MOVES TO MAKE 2023 YOUR BEST FINANCIAL YEAR YET

PATRICIA ALLEN, CRPC®

Inflation has been the party pooper of this year. But you don't have to let it steal your cheer. If the crazy high cost of everything has you more than a little worried, you are not alone. In the face of mounting inflation, now is the time to be smart with your money and make 2023 your best financial year yet.

HERE ARE 9 SMART MONEY MOVES TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR FINANCIAL SUCCESS

AVOID HOLIDAY SPENDING

Despite meticulous planning, the holidays are the time when many consumers do the most damage to their debt loads by buying presents for family and friends now and figuring out how to pay for them later. Here are some tips to help you avoid overspending during the holiday season.

1. GET OVER THE GUILT

Are you buying that gift because you haven't spent enough time with that person? Are you trying to make up for something you're feeling bad about? It's important to ask yourself if spending a surplus of money on a gift is really going to help you achieve the goal of gift-giving in the first place.

2. SET A BUDGET~ SPEND WITHIN IT

It is crucial to establish a spending plan BEFORE you go shopping. Don't spend more than have in your checking account or special holiday savings account. Your regular bills are not going anywhere next year. So, think about what adding all those additional holiday expenses would mean for your cash flow.

3. ALWAYS PAY FOR PURCHASES WITH CASH OR A DEBIT CARD

If you can't pay with cash or debit, you can't afford it.

www.powerhouseglobalmag.com DEC 2022 # ISSUE 41 15 BUSINESS & LEADERSHIP

Whether you can afford something depends on both your income and your expenses. You should know how these two things measure up before making a purchase. Are you consistently charging purchases to your credit card and carrying that debt from month to month?

4. DON'T ALLOW A GIFT TO PUT A VALUE ON YOU

Many consumers value themselves based on their spending choices. People become consumed in what they believe they are expected to purchase. Think about what you can afford. What is the meaning and value behind your gift? The gift may not cost much but may be worth more to the recipient than the price.

5.

Put meaning into your gift

Donating to a charity of your choice in a loved one's name is a fantastic way to show you care while staying within your budget. Research a charity or organization that holds special meaning to your recipient and honor them while helping somebody else in need.

Take this time to learn the likes and dislikes of your friends and family. This shows that you care

and will make your relationships stronger.

6. START THE NEW YEAR RIGHT

Create a monthly spending plan and examine what you are spending each month. Set your spending and saving goals early in the year and stick to it!

Then ask yourself can I really afford it?

Are you consistently charging purchases to your credit card and carrying that debt from month to month? If so, this may be a warning sign that you're overspending.

year-end financial tasks. Wouldn't you rather enjoy the holidays with family and friends than scramble to meet a December 31 deadline?

More smart money moves to consider-

Whether you can afford something depends on both your income and your expenses. You should know how these two things measure up before making a purchase.

Re-examining your budget and financial priorities may help you get your spending back on track. Your financial habits will unveil your philosophies to make financial choices, so you can make changes to align them with your goals.

7. SIZE UP YOUR PORTFOLIO

This year's stock market swings may have changed your mix of stocks and bonds. You may need to bring your portfolio back in line with a diversified mix that is appropriate for your situation.

8. MAX AND MATCH: REDUCE YOUR

Take a few minutes to see whether you can make an additional contribution to your retirement plan before the end of the year. Also, consider increasing your charitable contributions this year to reduce your tax bill next year if you choose to itemize your taxes.

9. CHECK BENEFICIARIES ON FINANCIAL ACCOUNTS AND LIFE INSURANCE

When reviewing your

investments, make sure you have designated a beneficiary for each account. It's especially important if there have been changes in your life, such as a birth, a death, or a change in marital status.

GIVE TO OTHERS AND CHARITY

The power of philanthropy comes from your desire to promote the welfare of others to increase their resources.

To mobilize this power, ask yourself some questions, such as:

• What changes would I like to see in the world?

• What do I value most?

• Does my giving reflect my values?

Giving, for women, offers a profound and gratifying opportunity to leave our imprint on the world and a legacy for our families, our communities and for future generations.

DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude is the easiest way to raise your vibration and begin

to attract more things and experiences to be grateful for.

Gratitude for your current financial circumstances will give you the spark you need to stick to your goals and dreams. Don’t be so focused on the future that you forget what you have today.

Build a gratitude list of things you are most grateful for and imagine what your life would be like without them. You will gain some much-needed perspective.

Gratitude raises your resiliency, giving you the strength and clarity of mind, you need to get beyond your greatest hurdles. So, what are you grateful for?

Best wishes for the holidays, and for health and happiness throughout the coming year.

ROSS SWAN’S LEADERSHIP CORNER STRONG LEADERSHIP IS LEADING FROM WITHIN

ROSS SWAN

The common perception of leadership is that it's all external. On the contrary, it’s what comes from within that dictates a good leader. It’s going within oneself to lead the only thing you can truly control… yourself.

Leading yourself is developing that sense of who you are, what you can do and where you are going.

Its’ setting that course, following it, and correcting it as you go. Life and business are often intertwined, so it also reflects how you work with clients, colleagues, and influence people in general. The more people you need to influence (lead) in your life, the more on show this ability is.

In essence, it comes back to knowing and believing in the person you are. Its staying true to that person, that authentic you.

Being true to yourself means living your internal values, not living someone else’s, just your own. It’s not being overly influenced by outside data, that is, the opinions of others, the media etc. Sure, you accept feedback from people, but you use it only to improve on the person you already

are, not to dictate the person you should be.

Steve Jobs once said, “Don’t waste your time living someone else’s life.” Self-leadership is being at peace with doing that.

When on an airline flight and you hear the safety announcement. it always says ‘when the oxygen masks drop down put yours on first’. This means that you are in a better position to help others if you are in a position of strength not weakness. Life is no different. Being at peace with who are gives you that strength.

A major contributor to being inconsistent is listening too much to the outside noise and bending in the breeze to that ever-changing data. Changing the person you are to suit it, only creates inconsistencies. Being your authentic self will not.

THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCCESS

SOPHIA BAILEY LARSEN

Have you ever read a book that changed your life? I have.

This book contained 13 steps to becoming successful and I spent a year and a half studying it to find out if the claims were true.

Think and Grow Rich was written by Napoleon Hill in 1937 after a 20 year study of the wealthiest people in the world.

He claimed that these 500 people had 13 traits in common and by applying them you could become rich too.

When I first read the book I found it to be too male centric; the stories were dated and unrelatable so honestly, I didn't take it seriously. I couldn't see how it would be relevant for me, a single mum from a council estate in London.

It was years down the line that I heard this book recommended by successful people I really looked up to. They said that most millionaires have read Think and Grow Rich an average of 14 times. They owed their achievements to this book, and said that following the 13 steps towards riches was critical to what they had achieved in life.

It caused me to question if I had been doing this all wrong. What if it was possible to think and grow rich by applying these steps?

I made a decision to not just re-read Think and Grow Rich but to study it. What I discovered took me from student to success. My story was included in a book featuring authors inspired by the work of Napoleon Hill. My mission became to make the possibility of success accessible, relatable and real by showing it in action in my own life.

THE JOURNEY TO SUCCESS

Napoleon Hill says that success begins with a Definite Major Purpose. You must have a burning desire to achieve something in life; and successful people place a value on their time, ensuring that every day is focused on making some effort towards achieving their goal.

When I shared my story of overcoming redundancy and abusive relationships to living

an abundant and happy life, I got three repeating questions on how to do the same.

I believe it depends on where you are at in life. If you have mastered each principle you will already be succeeding. Some ideas may jump out, while reading or later, as a spark of inspiration in your subconscious mind.

My spark came to me when I studied the chapter on imagination. I was surprised by how difficult it was for me to let go of past ideas or envision greater outcomes for my life. I identified what thoughts were holding me back and released them, this was my secret.

Whether it is to define your purpose, or perhaps to create the right circle of influence around you. What jumps out at you, is your secret.

Foundation. The first question they asked me was “have you decided upon your definite goal in life?”

My husband will tell you that he has been in the same profession for two decades but it wasn’t until applying these steps that he was able to grow rich from what he does. However, mastering the steps towards riches isn’t easy. Even Napoleon Hill had trouble

500 of the wealthiest people had followed these principles but they only formed 2% of the population, the other 98% are not using their thoughts powerfully because they simply don’t know how.

I can not promise you will become rich by reading this book but if you are looking for riches, studying Think and Grow Rich will convince you that you will become what you think about. Think of riches.

THE SCIENCE OF SUCCESS

For deeper answers, I became a Science of Success instructor with the Napoleon Hill

Like most, I have a vision of what I would like to become, a world-leading success trainer for women, but it felt a long way off. As a young working Mother, I had no examples of outstanding success around me but I knew it was possible to succeed because I had read success stories. In Success Magazine, there were inspirational people who had overcome the odds to live their dream life and this encouraged me to believe in my own possibility. I knew that if I was on track with my definite purpose, I would one day be featured in Success Magazine. Applying the Science of Success allowed it to happen. This year I was accepted among 150 women of influence nominees for Success Magazine Women of Influence 2022.

possible, collapsed time frames and brought this goal to my reality a decade early.

THE POWER OF SUCCESS

Napoleon Hill says of his teachings, “these instructions may, at first, seem abstract. Do not let this disturb you. Follow the instructions, no matter how abstract or impractical they may, at first, appear to be. The time will soon come, if you do as you have been instructed, in spirit as well as in act, when a whole new universe of power will unfold to you.”

COVID-19 PROJECTS

As part of PGWF mission to support more families during this challenged time, we have been able to hold two projects (one in April and the other on 13th July 2020). We distributed food supplies to several families and orphanage homes.

Our team lead by Mrs Josephine Itsuokor (Vice-president of PGWF) made these projects a success. We will continue to reach out to more families through the support of our global partners.

Powerful Global Women Foundation (Powerhouse Charity) was founded in 20l6 in Nigeria, West Africa, by Lady Anita Duckworth-Bradshaw. The core objective of this organization is to transform the lives of women and children, through various projects centred around the need of the service group.

In 20l6 Lady Anita single handedly fed over 400 children as part of “project feed l000 children globally”, and held an empowerment conference for the women. Through this project, so many women have gone to do great things with the knowledge they gained from the event.

She recently held a life transforming event for women in Lagos, Nigeria as part of International women’s month celebration 20l8. The turnout was very encouraging. She is working towards supporting more families to keep their children and wards in school through” project back-to-school” starting in September 20l8.

We are seeking for global support from individuals and organisations who would love to be a part of this service to humanity.
