DR. MARIAM SHAIKH
Powerhouse Global Star
PGMAG: Dr. Mariam, welcome to today’s interview with Lady Anita.
DMS: Thank you so much. It’s an honor to be here and share my journey with you and your readers.
PGMAG: Please briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
DMS: My name is Dr. Mariam Shaikh, and I am a lifelong advocate for education and women empowerment, and Founder & CEO of MS Education Consultants.
Over the past four decades as an education strategist, I’ve had the privilege of dedicating my career to transforming the education landscape and empowering individuals through knowledge.
My journey began in the 1980s, when I founded a nursery in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, with a vision to provide quality early education for children of diverse nationalities. That small initiative grew into the Sunflower Nursery, which served over 60 children and became the foundation of my lifelong commitment to education.
As my career evolved, I expanded my focus to higher education, taking on leadership roles at prominent institutions such as Heriot-Watt University, Canadian University Dubai, and Amity University. I also played a pivotal role in bringing international universities to the UAE, including establishing the University of New Brunswick’s campus in Dubai. These experiences allowed me to bridge global educational standards with the needs of the Gulf region, creating opportunities for students to thrive academically and professionally.
Beyond my work in institutions, I’ve always been driven by a desire to empower underserved communities.
Inspired by my late mother’s passion for education and women’s empowerment, I continue to support initiatives that uplift women and orphaned girls, such as running an orphanage in Mumbai and mentoring women leaders.
The core of my work revolves around creating access and opportunities for those who need it most. Whether it’s guiding students toward their academic dreams, mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, or advocating for equality in leadership, my vision remains rooted in the belief that education is the most powerful tool for transformation and empowerment. This belief has guided me through every phase of my career and continues to inspire my work today.
PGMAG: What was the toughest challenge you had to overcome to become a global voice?
DMS: The toughest challenge I faced was breaking societal norms and stereotypes, especially as a woman stepping into leadership roles in education. In a field often dominated by traditional mindsets, navigating these challenges meant confronting biases—both overt and subtle—while consistently proving my abilities. Early in my career, it became clear that earning trust and respect in these spaces required not just competence but resilience and an unwavering commitment to my vision.
There were moments of self-doubt and setbacks when the barriers seemed insurmountable. However, those moments also became opportunities to grow stronger and more determined. Each challenge taught me the importance of resilience—not just enduring the obstacles but using them as stepping stones to rise higher. It also reaffirmed my belief in authenticity as a leader: staying true to my values and purpose, even when it felt easier to conform.
Most importantly, I learned that leadership is not just about personal achievements but about creating a lasting impact on others. My greatest motivation was, and remains, the opportunity to empower others—whether through mentoring, advocating for equitable education, or driving systemic change. These experiences shaped me into the leader I am today, and they fuel my ongoing commitment to breaking barriers and uplifting communities.
PGMAG: As an authority in the field of personal and professional development industry, what are the top five keys to winning in life?
DMS: Winning in life is about much more than external success; it’s about building a foundation of values and habits that sustain you through life’s highs and lows. Here are my top five principles:
• Authenticity: Stay true to who you are. In a world that often pressures us to conform, your uniqueness is your strength. Leading with integrity and purpose not only earns trust but also inspires others.
• Resilience: Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but they are also opportunities to grow. It’s not about avoiding failure but learning how to rise stronger each time.
• Collaboration: Success is rarely a solo journey. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and focus on empowering others along the way. Together, we can achieve far more than we ever could alone.
• Vision: Having a clear sense of purpose gives you direction and the courage to persevere, even in the face of obstacles. Keep your goals in sight and remain steadfast in your pursuit.
• Continuous Learning: The world is constantly evolving, and so should you. Stay curious, seek out new experiences, and embrace change as an opportunity to grow.
Each of these principles has played a vital role in shaping my personal and professional journey. They are not just keys to success but to living a life of purpose, fulfillment, and impact.
PGMAG: In your opinion as a leader, what are the key elements for business growth?
DMS: Business growth is rooted in several foundational elements, the first of which is a clear and strategic vision. Leaders must define a longterm purpose that aligns with their organization's goals and inspires the entire team to work towards a shared mission. This vision acts as a guiding light, ensuring that every decision and action taken contributes meaningfully to the larger objectives of the business. Without this clarity, it’s easy for teams to lose focus or direction.
Innovation is another critical driver of growth. In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, businesses that embrace change, adopt new technologies, and prioritize creativity are the ones that remain relevant. Innovation is not just about developing new products or services; it’s also about refining processes, improving customer experiences, and finding ways to operate more efficiently. It’s the willingness to think outside the box and embrace the unknown that often differentiates a thriving business from a stagnant one. Equally important is adaptability. Markets are ever-evolving, and challenges can arise unexpectedly. A successful leader must be prepared to pivot strategies, recalibrate goals, and navigate uncertainties with confidence. This flexibility is what enables businesses to not only survive disruptions but also seize opportunities that come with change. Adaptability is about maintaining a proactive mindset and ensuring that the organization is resilient in the face of challenges.
A strong focus on people—both employees and customers—is another cornerstone of growth. Empowering your team by creating a supportive and collaborative work environment is crucial. Employees who feel valued and motivated are more engaged and invested in the organization’s success. Investing in their professional development, recognizing their contributions, and fostering a culture of trust can unleash their full potential, driving the business forward.
Lastly, customercentric strategies cannot be overlooked. Truly understanding your audience, listening to their feedback, and consistently meeting or exceeding their expectations builds trust and loyalty. Strong customer relationships are the foundation for sustained success, as they lead to repeat business, positive word-of-mouth, and longterm partnerships. By placing people—both customers and employees—at the center of your strategies, businesses can create sustainable growth and lay the groundwork for enduring success.
PGMAG: Congratulations on your achievements and awards received for your contribution in the educational industry. Looking back on the journey you have made as a woman in leadership, what would you say was your key motivation?
DMS: Thank you so much!
My key motivation has always been the desire to create opportunities for others to succeed. Education has the power to transform lives, and knowing that my work can make that transformation possible is what drives me every day. Whether it’s helping students achieve their academic dreams, guiding them toward scholarships, or mentoring young leaders, I find immense fulfillment in being a catalyst for change.
Throughout my journey, I have also been inspired by the resilience of the people I work with—students, colleagues, and women striving to break barriers.
Every success story, no matter how small, reinforces my belief in the work I do. It’s not just about the individual achievements but the ripple effect those achievements create, shaping communities and inspiring others to aim higher.
As a woman in leadership, I’ve faced my share of challenges, but each one has made me more determined to pave the way for others. I see my journey as a testament to what is possible when we believe in ourselves and support each other. This sense of purpose, coupled with the knowledge that I’m making a difference, continues to fuel my passion and commitment to education and empowerment.
PGMAG: What could be done to encourage more women take up leadership roles?
DMS: Encouraging more women to step into leadership roles requires intentional actions that dismantle barriers and create supportive ecosystems. The first step is implementing mentorship programs that connect women with experienced leaders who can guide them through the challenges of leadership. Mentors provide valuable insights, encouragement, and strategies to help women navigate their journeys, fostering confidence and resilience along the way. Flexibility in opportunities is another crucial element, as many women balance professional aspirations with personal responsibilities. Offering flexible work arrangements, such as hybrid models or adjustable schedules, ensures that women have the space to thrive both personally and professionally. This adaptability not only helps women grow but also demonstrates an organization’s commitment to their success. Equally important is celebrating women’s achievements publicly. Highlighting their successes normalizes the idea of women in leadership and provides visible role models for aspiring leaders. Representation matters, and seeing women excel in leadership inspires the next generation to aim high and break barriers.
Addressing systemic barriers is essential to creating sustainable change. This includes providing equitable access to education, addressing workplace discrimination, and tackling unconscious bias. Organizations must actively promote inclusivity by creating policies that prioritize diversity and by fostering an environment where women feel valued and heard.
Lastly, empowering women to believe in their potential is vital. Encouragement to take risks, embrace challenges, and pursue ambitions without fear builds a culture of confidence. When women are supported and given opportunities to lead, they become unstoppable forces for progress, driving innovation and transformation across industries.
PGMAG: Finally, what would you say to your younger self?
DMS: If I could speak to my younger self, I would say: Trust the journey, even when it feels uncertain. Every challenge you face will shape you into the leader you are meant to become. The road may not always be clear, but every setback is a stepping stone that teaches you resilience, patience, and strength. Trust that these experiences will guide you toward your purpose. I would also remind myself to dream big and never fear failure. The boldest dreams often lead to the most meaningful impacts. Success is not about avoiding mistakes; it’s about learning from them and using those lessons to move forward with determination and courage. There is power in embracing risks and stepping out of your comfort zone, and it is through these moments that true growth happens.
Another key lesson I would share is the importance of embracing your uniqueness. What sets you apart is your greatest strength. Don’t let societal expectations or external pressures diminish your individuality. Instead, lean into it, and let it guide your path as a leader.
Finally, I’d emphasize the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people— those who uplift and inspire you, challenge you to grow, and share your values. Stay grounded in your principles and always focus on making a positive difference in the lives of others. The journey may not always be easy, but every step, every challenge, and every victory will be worth it.
