BAHRAIN AND SPORTS
INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD
I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problemsolving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices
for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities;
“

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned.

WELCOME MESSAGE IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship in the Kingdom of Bahrain has greatly promoted the triathlon, a multisport race, to the local community. Over a short span of years, triathlon has become the biggest sporting events in the Kingdom. It has also turned into a huge platform in showcasing the country as a sporting destination evidenced by the huge turnout of pro-athlete participants we have this year. This year marks one of the biggest milestone in Ironman 70.3 MEC Bahrain, with the participation of more than 1,500 athletes of which 1,200 are from outside the country. In addition, the three main legends in their field Mo Farah, Chloe McCardel and Mark Cavendish will be joining forces on the relay race. Inspired by His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s passion for bringing triathlon home to all ages and all levels of fitness, a series of fun and familyfriendly running and swimming events are set to kick start the main race day event. IRONKIDS Aquathlon, IRONKIDS run and IRONGIRLS are three events for young people and females of all abilities that will also be held at the Avenues Park. We, at Faalyat Management, are honoured to organise this prestigious event to promote the Kingdom of Bahrain and we are looking forward to welcoming all of you. We wish the athletes a safe and fulfilling race and for our spectators, a memorable race experience!

IRONMAN 70.3 MIDDLE EAST CHAMPIONSHIP BAHRAIN
POWERUP | DECEMBER 2019
In his first years as an elite track rider, Cavendish won gold in the madison at the 2005 and 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Championships riding for Great Britain, with Rob Hayles and Bradley Wiggins respectively, and in the scratch race at the 2006 Commonwealth Games riding for Isle of Man. After failing to win a medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics he did not compete on track until 2015, subsequently winning his third UCI Track Cycling World Championships title with Wiggins in the madison in 2016, and an individual silver medal in the Omnium at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Turning Professional As a road cyclist, Cavendish turned professional in 2005, and achieved eleven wins in his first professional season. Cavendish has won thirty Tour de France stages, putting him second on the all-time list, contributing to a joint third-highest total of forty-eight Grand Tour stage victories. He won the road race at the 2011 road world championships, becoming the second British rider to do so after Tom Simpson in 1965. Cavendish also won the points classification in all three of the grand tours: the 2010 Vuelta a España, the 2011 Tour de France, and the 2013 Giro d’Italia. In 2012, he became the first person to win the final Champs-Élysées stage in the Tour de France in four consecutive years. Cavendish continued producing good results until August 2018, when he was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus. He won seven Grand Tour stages in 2013, one in 2015 and four in 2017. This included a win on stage one of the 2016 Tour de France, claiming him his first Tour de France yellow jersey of his career. Cavendish crashed with Peter Sagan on stage four of the 2017 Tour de France, forcing him out of the race. Before his diagnosis, Cavendish was able to compete in the 2018 Tour de France but was disqualified after not making the cut-off time on stage eleven.
Knighthood In the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours, Cavendish was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) “for services to British Cycling.” He also won the 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award with nearly half of the votes going to him out of a field of ten nominations.

The most successful British track athlete in modern Olympic Games history, he is the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist in both the 5000 m and 10,000 m. Farah is the second athlete in modern Olympic Games history, after Lasse Virén, to win both the 5000 m and 10,000m titles at successive Olympic Games. He was the second man in history, after Kenenisa Bekele, to win long-distance doubles at successive Olympics and World Championships, and the first in history to defend both distance titles in both major global competitions – a feat described as the ‘quadruple-double’. Since finishing 2nd in the 10,000 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, Farah had an unbroken streak of ten global final wins (the 5000m in 2011, the 10,000m in 2017 and the double in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016). The streak ended in Farah’s final championship track race, when he finished second to Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris in the 2017 5000 metres final. In his final track race, the 2017 Diamond League Final in Zurich in August 2017, Farah gained his revenge, edging out world champion Edris to win his only IAAF Diamond League title at 5000 metres.
Running Style
His running style has been described as “bouncy” and tactical, which he has attempted to alter for a more efficient and energysaving stride pattern, especially in the longer distances. Farah runs distance races tactically, a style which is aided by his quick sprint finish.
Multi-awarded athlete
Farah is the most decorated athlete in British athletics history, with ten global titles, and was the first British athlete to win two gold medals at the same world championships, although Dame Kelly Holmes had achieved the feat at an Olympic Games. His five gold medals at the European Athletics Championships make him the most successful athlete in individual events in the championships’ history.

TOP 10 CHECKLIST 1
PREPARE FOR RACE CONDITIONS
• Race day should not be your first exposure to an open water swim. Make sure some of your training replicates real race conditions, including water temperature, proximity to other swimmers and wearing a wetsuit if needed.
2
RACE IN SHORTER EVENTS
• Being properly trained is the best way to reduce anxiety. If possible, race in shorter events and clinics to prepare yourself for open water conditions. • For extra guidance, talk to a coach or your local triathlon club.
3
STUDY THE COURSE
• It's important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically prior to race day. Thoroughly review the race website and pre-race communication to familiarize yourself with the course. • Every body of water is different, so you’ll need to
20
educate yourself on water current and surf conditions. • Study the event timetable to plan for proper arrival and preparation.
4
ENSURE HEART HEALTH
• As an athlete in training, you should take the proper steps to assess your health with your physician. • Health experts suggest a 12-step screening process for competitive athletes. This includes a physical exam as well as an assessment of your family history and personal heart health.
5
PAY ATTENTION TO WARNING SIGNS
• If you experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, light-headedness or blacking out while training, consult your doctor.
6
DON’T USE NEW GEAR ON RACE DAY
• Focus on controlling as much
IRONMAN 70.3 MIDDLE EAST CHAMPIONSHIP BAHRAIN
POWERUP | DECEMBER 2019
as you can on race day. • You should never race in equipment you haven’t trained in – this is not the time to test new gear. • Make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that your goggles, swim caps and other accessories work properly. • Prepare for the unexpected with backups of all your gear.
7
WARM UP ON RACE DAY
• Arrive early enough on race day for a proper warm-up prior to the start, preferably in the water. • If you aren’t able to warm up in the water, spend between 5 and 10 minutes getting loose. • Be sure to do some cardio activity, such as a light jog, to increase circulation and prep your muscles.
8
CHECK OUT THE COURSE
• Get comfortable with the course by checking out water conditions, the swim entry and exit layouts, along with turn buoy locations.
• Identify basic navigation points so that you know what you are swimming towards.
9
START EASY RELAX AND BREATHE
• Don’t race at maximum effort from the start. • Relax and focus on proper breathing technique as you settle into a sustainable pace.
10
BE ALERT AND ASK FOR HELP
• In a race setting always stop at the first sign of a medical problem. • If you or a fellow athlete needs help, just raise your hand to alert a lifeguard or safety boat. • Feel free to hold on to a static object like a raft, buoy, or dock. • As long as you don’t use it to move forward, you won’t face disqualification. • Race rules allow for competitors to stop or rest at any time during the swim.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
2016 Ironman 70.3 World Champion
In 2014, she was invited to race on the British team for the European championships.
●2018 Commonwealth Games Bronze
Holly Lawrence’s win at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Mooloolaba was the high point of a breakthrough year that saw the Welsh triathlete win three titles over the half distance.
Holly moved up to the non-drafting 70.3 distance in 2015, which played better to her strength on the swim and bike. Her win at Ironman 70.3 Vineman and a second-place finish on the hilly Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblant were indicators of her potential, which she has since made good on.
Lauren Parker went from elite triathlete to elite paratriathlete in the span of nine months, one of the fastest transitions to adapted sport ITU has on record. But then again she has always been a driven and determined athlete.
Given Holly’s background in swimming and cross-country running, she was targeted for development in pentathlon alongside her brother. After she raced in triathlon at age 16, however, she discovered a sport for herself. She raced on the British circuit and was a member of a French Grand Prix team while studying for her university degree.

A junior swimmer who competed at state and national levels in Australia, she began racing triathlons in 2008 and set her sights on Ironman in 2014. After placing second in the 25-29 age group at the 2015 Ironman World Championship, she planned to turn professional. However, weeks before racing the 2017
Ironman Australia, a freak cycling accident broke her spine -- but not her spirit. A year later, she took bronze for Australia at the Commonwealth Games para-triathlon. She also won bronze at the world final on the Gold Coast six weeks after undergoing spinal surgery. Now she aims to be the first Australian world champion in para-triathlon and to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics. • 2018 Gold Coast Grand Final Bronze

THE RACE WEEK
Lisa Pringle of Endurance Bahrain 13 shares lessons and tips from her triathlon experience to help you through the race week.
W
ith all the experience in the world, I still haven’t mastered the art of enjoying a race week.
I guess if you like resting, planning, worrying and waiting then race week is pure bliss for you. Everybody gets nervous in race week. Racing is a test of our training and all the hard work we have put in so it is normal to feel anxious. Test results are polarising; you pass or you fail; you win or you lose. That’s a lot of pressure!

LET YOUR BEST EFFORTS BE ENOUGH
SPORTS NUTRITION IS NOT COMPLICATED
Take the time to remember the preparation that has gone into your race. Remember the good
Away from commercial agendas and product marketing, successful fuelling plans have remained virtually the same for decades. Whilst professional athletes may reach for a 1% advantage in nutritional strategy, 95% of competitors simply need to drink a carbohydrate drink that they can stomach during exercising and eat sugars that are quickly absorbed and easy to digest.
sessions and remember the painful ones too. Understand that if you have done all that you can within your allocated time then you have to be happy with the outcome of your efforts. If you are a little ‘undercooked’ and haven’t been wholly focused on the task of racing, that too is understandable. Do not force training in the last days before competition as you will only enter the race fatigued and unfit, which is far worse than just being unfit. Use your relative freshness to your advantage. It is better to be slightly undertrained than to be over trained. Consider concentrating on race routines and nutritional preparation which won’t take too much of your energy but will only to serve to improve your performance. Enter into the race week with mindset of going out there and doing your best with what you have.
TRY YOUR RACE FUEL OUT WHILE TRAINING In the days before a race it is important to reduce your fibre intake. Fruits, vegetables and salads should play dominant roles in our daily diet but they must not be consumed in the day preceding a race. You need simple food that is not going to stay in your digestive tract for too long ensuring a settled, comfortable tummy for the race.
THE RACE DAY If the days before a race are the toughest moments of my job as an athlete, then time spent racing is the best part. It’s better than any movie, ride or party I have ever been to! Remember these top tips for enjoying the race day.
For those looking to improve their performance during racing, stick with these basic tips: • Avoid fast food/ microwave meals or any other processed nutrition • Lower your sugar intake including all the hidden sugars in products such as tomato sauce, canned food etc. • Stay clear of low fat products, as these are generally rich in sugar content • Always read your labels. If there are more than three ingredients, or loads of numbers or words that you can’t understand, that’s usually a good indication to leave it on the shelf!

Experience the people. Watch other people’s faces, their joy, their pain, their efforts and acknowledge their achievements. The difference in peoples’ goals, in their shapes and their abilities is what makes this sport come alive.
1
NUTRITION TIPS
Have a good attitude. Triathlon is a sport and sports mirror life. Like life, the journey matters more than the destination.
2
Racing can be painful but remember it is our choice to endure it well or throw in the towel. Remember to appreciate the freedom of experiencing the pain as the finish will be sweeter!

A Norwegian triathlete who’s going the extra mile for success, Kristian Blummenfelt is a triathlete who trains with Bergen Triathlon Club in his homeland of Norway for up to eight hours every single day. Each week he covers astonishing distances, swimming up to 45km, cycling around 400km and running up to 120km. Blummenfelt’s intense training regime has clearly paid off. He’s been putting in some impressive performances and consistently finishes in the top three of the most competitive ITU World Triathlon Series events everywhere from Bermuda and Canada to the Netherlands and Japan. Known for his gutsy approach to races, right now Blummenfelt is focused on becoming the one to beat in the triathlon world. “I try to play a little bit safe in the beginning and just make it inside the top 15 and top 10,” he says, “but it’s just so hard to hold back when I like racing so much.”
