FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned. I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us.

I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle.

Health is a lifestyle and I chose it.

PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

SPORTS & BEYOND

SHOULD MAGAZINES BE LOADED WITH PHOTOS? Many of you flip the pages through your favourite magazine but will local magazines survive? Dr Saqer shares his opinion on what the future looks like.

12

POWERUP | MAY 2018

SPORTS & BEYOND

T

his magazine, PowerUp, is one of many monthly magazines about sports published around the world. A while back, when I wanted to get my monthly edition of Top Gear magazine I would have to literally go through a lot of trouble! By the time I read it, it is already about two weeks late. But since the iPad revolution, the term “local magazine” does no longer exist. So what about PowerUp, should you read it, look at it, or not bother at all?

CLICKING PICTURES AND MAKING NEWS I’ve been writing articles in this magazine since the beginning. As I have the personal relationship with the staff, they became my friends, and now wherever they see me they splash me with great photos. Who doesn’t like to have photos right, we are always looking for that action photo for our Instagram! But keeping friendships and the benefits that come with it aside, I have looked into the challenges the PowerUp staff have gone through, and am really amazed on how they tackled them one issue at a time. What I have also seen, is how this magazine is keen into aligning their monthly issues with the society we live in, local and international.

LOOKING BEYOND THE MOMENT It is fun to write articles of course and to read, but what’s also more fun is to look at photos. There are local monthly magazines, not published online, that we actually do purchase, that is full of photos of social events and no words at all. Yes, people do love them, but I feel they are more of just snooping around other people’s lives and not actually spending quality time learning something new. I only learned that my friend is so social that he goes to many different weddings and embassies’ celebrations! My advice to you all is to have something from everything. The people behind this magazine work hard on bringing to you all the sports news from the region and outside so that you can PowerUp your life! You need to invest in your life, and to be well-rounded, you have to learn something that you do not necessarily find interest in it. I, for example, have no interest at all in art, but sometimes I do drag myself to museums to know more about that past life. Why? Well, because there are a number of

DR. SAQER AL KHALIFA

President, Bahrain Triathlon Association and Assistant Undersecretary for Youth Authorities and Centres of Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs

good people who worked tirelessly on this specific subject. For now, this month article is about the importance of reading, because with photos, or skimming through articles, you won’t be able to know something new every day of your life. Cheers, and see you next month!

ARCHIVING A BIG NO NO! The sad thing about monthly magazines is that each month they add to their archive a new magazine that they have worked very hard for the whole past month. For these reasons, I do not like to have information that many people worked hard on getting and publishing simply being archived away. I go through each page because I feel it is my duty to do so. Even my article, in some funny way, I try to give it the attention that it deserves by actually reading it once or twice. I try to make sure the information is correct, and hope that a number of you read them and benefit. If I can make a positive change in one person’s life, it means that I have achieved my goals for that past month.

INDOOR SKYDIVING

TIME TO SOAR, GLIDE AND SWOOP Enthusiastic, witty and full of zest for life, meet the duo who put the fun in indoor skydiving. If you haven’t thought about flying, you will pretty soon as Ben and Garth give you the inside story. The 2- Way Dynamic Team is gearing up for the 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving, #WCIS2018. Ben, why are you so passionate about highlevel competition? What is the one thing that drives you? Ben: I’ve been competitive my whole life. I have two older brothers who have always been good at everything, literally! Soccer, football, basketball, and hockey to name a few, and I was just trying to keep up and I’ve been in that kind of an environment my whole life. Funnily, my older brother got into indoor skydiving before

me. He was the one who taught me how to fly and my competitive nature made me want to learn how to do it. I believe competition has been a part of me since I was born . This new sport that has so much competition that’s getting better is simply amazing.

Garth, you have been known to be a competitive individual and you have represented South Africa in sports - martial

arts and squash. So we are quite curious to know why you shifted into skydiving? Garth: I started Martial Arts at the age of seven and continued for 10 years. As an individual becomes older it is normal for their interests and drives to evolve and that was the natural process of me switching sports as I grew up. I think it is within every human being, at some point in their life they dream about flying, and that’s what drove me to do a tandem skydive.

After that experience, I realised I could turn this dream into a reality and the rest is history!

Ben, You have come a long way in terms of your accomplishments. Could you share with us how the journey has been so far? Ben: I guess I can say it has been like a blur. I have been very fortunate to compete with people that have backed me in my competition run. My main focus wasn’t mainly on my accomplishments

I N D O O R S KCYYDCI VL I N G

In other competitions, the athletes would hang out as a team and once the game was over, they give a handshake and it’s over. But here, my team shows up and we’re best friends. We have a good rapport with our competitors as well. It is a special environment as far as competition goes and I’m looking forward to pushing that further. The level of teams gets better with every single competition because the sport is so young and its growing.

How are you preparing yourself for the 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving? Garth: I am an active individual and I like to stay fit. My fitness routine generally depends on the day, but I

do hit the gym and do some weight training. To improve my flying I need to adjust the way I train. I do more cardio work and high repetition gym training as it helps to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the wind. Flying is a skillbased activity; the more you do it, the better you get. Yoga is something I do quite often now as it focuses on flexibility, which is important in flying. The best way to prepare for a competition is actual competition exposure and as a team, our performance has improved.

What is your advice for aspiring athletes who want to take up this kind of sport? Garth: Take the first step and do it, even if it feels daunting. As a beginner, you might feel overwhelmed. Find a good facility wherever you can, walk in, talk to them and ask questions! Tunnel flying is completely different so you need to be open-minded. You have got to allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone and take in what others are giving you in terms of advice.

Ben: My training week here would start at 10 am where we discuss what we are going to fly and then do it for an hour and half a day. The way we train is similar to that of doing sprints. We have an incredible facility here that supports us. Gravity provides us with everything we need. We also watched the 1st FAI European Indoor Skydiving Championships and took down the times of the other teams racing. We then hop in and race them to see where we need to improve and time each pattern.

Ben: Once you are committed, listening to your instructor is really important. There are many things that happen in the tunnel that goes against your natural instincts out in the open space. Many people get in there and have the mentality that they are athletic and can do flips on the trampoline, but things are pretty different in there. So when you take that first step and about to get into the wind, listen to what your instructor tells you. There are things that are very basic that you will learn so much faster from your instructor than using your knowledge that you have gotten from other sports.

Dream, believe and achieve. When I first started tunnel flying and looked at all these amazing tunnel flyers, I would dream of taking part in highlevel competitions. I followed that dream, and it was definitely worth it! - GARTH LEWIS

and wins, but rather on selfimprovement. I really enjoy the people at the competitions because it is a family that shows up. Everyone sits on the floor together from ages 8 to 80 and we all hang out and play games. It’s incredible because we all share the same passion for flying which is quite special.

SPORTS

S

afety comes first while you’re having fun. If you are new to jet skiing and riding for the first time, here are a few things you need to keep in mind.

STEER STRAIGHT AHEAD! If you are new to this then you will most likely have a difficulty in steering the jet ski straight. Easy fix. Instead of staring at your handlebar or the water just lift your head up and look off into the distance.

FINGER ON THE THROTTLE The “jet” in jet ski refers to the water jet that shoots out the back and makes the ski go forward. That jet moves side to side to steer the machine. There is no rudder. So, when you slow down or stop giving the machine thrust all together your ability to steer is diminished or you lose it completely. If an emergency arises and you need to avoid a collision don’t take your finger off the throttle. Doing that will make it impossible to steer away from danger. Rather, keep your speed up and steer away from the threat.

BACK ON THE JET SKI If you fall into the water with a splash then you need to know how to get back on. Make sure that you re-board from the back (stern). Grab the handle behind the seat and climb on to the back deck of the ski. Relax in the water, think about how you’re going to get back on board and then slowly climb back aboard.

BEAT THE HEAT

ON JETS

Summer is already here and we all look for ways to beat the scorching heat. Slouching in your chair in an air-conditioned room is not a healthy option. What better way than to go jet skiing. Beat the heat on waters!

16

POWERUP | MAY 2018

YOU NEED TO RELAX! Don’t be surprised if you feel slightly sour as it is due to being stiff the whole ride. Just relax and enjoy it. Lean forward slightly and relax your grip. Keep your elbows slightly bent. This will allow you to ride without fatigue. Don’t lean too far forward and always be careful not to hit your chin or nose on the handlebar.

HOLD TIGHTLY… BUT NOT TOO TIGHT! Don’t hold on so tight that you make it difficult for your partner to drive the ski. As with driving, relax. Keep your body loose, not stiff. For the passenger, it is important that you do not hold on too tight.

ROAD TO RUSSIA With the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia right around the corner there is excitement in the air as ardent fans route for their home teams. Here is everything you need to know about the 21st edition of the iconic football game!

T

he football mania is bigger than ever as the greatest players across the globe will take centre stage in Russia. December 2010 was a big deal for the country as it was granted the right to host the FIFA World Cup for the first time in history. The game returns to Europe since it was held in 2006 and the hosts will get the party underway on June 14 against Saudi Arabia, and on July 15 a new world champion will be crowned.

MAGIC MEETS THE DREAM The brand identity of the World Cup and its official emblem was designed in a form of the principal trophy – the world cup. The theme of the World Cup Russia is a dream and the cosmic outer space exploration, enlivened with folk motives featuring Firebirds, Matryoshkas and folk patterns. The bold use of red, gold, black and blue in the emblem’s colour palette was inspired by centuries-old techniques seen in world-renowned Russian art dating back to the earliest icon paintings.

FOOTBALL

TEAMS COMPETING FOR THE WIN 32 teams will compete in Russia and 13 national teams would represent European zone (Russia was automatically qualified for the Championship as the host country), five national teams from African zone, and ten from Asia and South America, and three from North American zone. Another two tournament tickets will be decided in playoffs.

MEET ZABIVAKA THE WOLF Zabivaka™ means “the one who scores” in Russian, a very suitable name for this wolf who radiates fun, charm and confidence. The Official Mascot will play a very important role in the FIFA World Cup Russia™. The wolf will not only promote the event and entertain crowds at the stadiums, but also will become an ambassador for Russia and a worldwide ‘celebrity’. Zabivaka™ was named only after the most engaging creative process for an Official Mascot in FIFA World Cup history.More than one million Russians cast their votes on FIFA.com during the month-long voting period and the big reveal was done during a live show on Russia’s Channel 1.

ADDIDAS MATCH BALL The match was unveiled by Adidas and it is incredible to see how it is a re-imaging of the cult classic ball that was used at the 1970 World Cup. A reinvention of a classic model with a brand-new panel design and the latest technology. The Telstar 18 evokes unforgettable memories of the 1970 FIFA World Cup™. Almost 50 years later, the ball features a brand new carcass, high technology and sustainable elements such as recycled

packaging. It also includes a microchip technology that allows the speed and trajectory of the ball to be tracked and analyzed. An embedded NFC chip enables consumers to interact with the ball using a smartphone. The personalised and location-aware experience displays specific details of each ball and provides access to challenges which users can enter in the runup to the FIFA World Cup™.

LET'S GET PHYSICAL Most of us are buried under emails and glued to our desk! Some others would be scrolling through instagram, facebook and so on. It’s time to sneak in some activity into your day. Stop sitting around too much. Why? It may be the very thing that could literally kill you.

D

id you know that lack of physical activity can have negative effects in the long run? According to World Health Organisation about 3.2 million people are sitting themselves to an unhealthy lifestyle. The more inactive, the more health problems you are most likely to encounter.

Don’t let your desk job limit you from daily physical activity that could reverse some of your knots, stiff muscles and fatigue. Check out these basic exercises to keep you going even at your desk.

WANT TO MOVE UP?

Bend your knees and lift your right leg up and lock your arms around your leg and bring it close to your chest. Hold it for a while and repeat the same with your left leg.

If you are ready to upgrade your exercises at the desk then go right ahead with these simple ones.

1. GET MOVING You could take a few minutes to run, walk or jog in the office.

2. PUSH-UPS Yes that’s right. But how you do it depends on you completely. You can modify it by doing it against a wall, edge of your desk or on the floor.

3. SQAUTS From your chair, stand up, sit back down and repeat 10 more times. Simple!

4. TRICEP DIPS

9

Position your hands shoulder-width apart on a secured bench or stable chair. Slide your butt off the front of the bench with your legs extended out in front of you. Straighten your arms, keeping a little bend in your elbows to keep tension on your triceps and off your elbow joints.

REACH AND BEND Extend and stretch your left arm over your head and reach out as far as you can towards your right while bending over slightly.

5. JUMP MINUS THE ROPE Pretend that you have a jump rope and hop on both feet. The intensity is upto you.

6. CALF RAISES Hold on to your chair for support while you stand on your toes. Lower yourself abck to the floor. Do this a couple of times.

7. GLUTE SQUEEZE This is an isometric move. Squeeze your glutes as hard as you can and hold for 10–30 seconds.

8. SHOULDER PRESS Find something heavy and lift the object at shoulder height and raise it all the way over your head.

Want to stretch those glutes? Here’s how. You start by brining your right ankle on your left knee and press against the right knee a few time. Now repeat with your other ankle.

Stand with your back against the wall and slowly lower yourself into a seated position and hold for 10–30 seconds at a time.

10. LUNGE You can keep this move stationary and do it at your desk, or you could go all out and lunge down the hall to the printer and back. With one leg in front of the other, gently lower the knee of your back leg down towards the ground. Like you were going to propose to a co-worker. 10 times on each leg.

AN INCREDIBLE RACE FOR BAHRAIN ENDURANCE 13 The Bahrain Endurance 13 team shone across the world with a weekend of personal best performances and great results.

T

he IRONMAN North American Championship in Texas went fast and furious, despite being the longest distance the team has raced. Hugely talented pro fields had migrated to The Woodlands for Saturday’s big show. It was the last year for points in the qualification system for Kona, a factor that had many pros wanting to grab some big points early to guarantee a spot to race in

HH SHAIKH NASSER Team captain His Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa also recorded a new personal best in 9:06:33 over the IRONMAN distance. BRENT MCMAHON Brent McMahon logged his fifth career sub-eight hour finish, putting him even with Sebastian Kienle with the most number of such finishes. Helped along by his best swim split ever, McMahon rode with the leaders early in the bike before Andrew Starykowicz blew the field apart with a lightning fast bike split. McMahon then ran his way back into sixth place, a solid performance overall in a field where the top 11 men all finished before the clock ticked past the eighth hour. David Plese finished in 12th with a new personal record just slightly off the sub-8 mark.

JAN FRODENO The racing action started with Jan Frodeno defending last year’s Challenge Taiwan win over the half distance. Despite the wet and slippery conditions due to rain, he still managed to go faster than last year. He said, “There’s always a

sense of adventure racing here and the passion of the local athletes is contagious.”

BEN KANUTE Ben Kanute then raced WTS Bermuda, characteristically exiting the swim with the leaders and staying in the hunt in the early stages of the bike. Despite finishing down the results board, he soaked up the lessons learned and will put them to good use further into the season. “Time to review and get back to some work. I have a summer full of racing to get ready for,” he said.

JAVIER GOMEZ Javier Gomez provided the bookend to the team’s solid weekend of racing by winning the Cannes International Triathlon. He finished three minutes ahead of the field with a time of4:27:12 over the 2-kilometre swim, 107-kilometre cycle (with 1,700 meters of climbing), and 16-kilometre run. He certainly looks to be in great shape tackling the longer distances with his Ironman debut just a month away.

Mission accomplished. Goal set, arrived ready, delivered when it was asked. That’s the entire principle of racing. Congratulations on the huge PB and perfectly executed race. Next stop: Kona! Great racing for all the team.

POWERUP GOES ON A GYM TOUR It’s known that Bahrain has a wide range of gyms offering so many facilities to keep people fit. We know that you invest your time, money and energy into these gyms so the PowerUp team decided to go on a gym tour to help you choose the best. Watch out this space for more.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I FIRST COME IN They will ask you a few questions on the health questionnaire: The kettlebell swing was done which works the posterior, the back of the body.

The slam ball, striders and box jumps which intensifies the workout as they are power exercises with plyometrics.

All these moves have a specific use for the body. If you are a competitive bodybuilder or a beginner and have never been in a gym before, not to worry as oxygen gym has pretty much everything for everyone. There is a wide range of equipment to choose from.

What are your goals? What do you want to achieve from your training?: Do you have high or low blood pressure, any old injuries, use any medications, diabetic, asthma and so on.

Oxygen gym will make you do a fitness test, a mobility test to see what all you can. They will take you through a screening process which will dictate how they will determine to do a program best for you. So here is a great gym that will help you get in shape. SWIMMING

SWIM RIGHT, SWIM SAFE! We all hit the pool when it’s time to beat the heat. But to enjoy a safe swimming experience, you need to make sure you know everything there is to act during an emergency. Meet the team ready to give you an enjoyable experience.

E

very year, Bahrain loses around 20 people to drowning. Such a number is too high, and many of these incidents are preventable. This is the reason that Royal Life Saving Bahrain was established in October 2016. Founder HH Shaikha Nayla bint Hamad bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa read about many of these incidents in the news and began investigating what could be done to prevent such tragedies, which lead her to form the charity to prevent drowning-related deaths and injury.

SAVING BAHRAIN FROM DROWNING Royal Life Saving Bahrain officially launched their water safety strategy for

36

POWERUP | MAY 2018

the Kingdom of Bahrain in October 2017, having spent a year working with a number of organisation’s in Bahrain to understand the challenges we face and establish five clear strategies to achieve. The organisation’s mission is to promote safe enjoyment of recreation in water, build cohesive communities, enable economic development and save lives. Many countries across the world have established similar organisations, with the common goal of preventing drowning, and the charity is the first full member of the International Life Saving Federation in the GCC. The organisation worked closely with Australia to develop the Water Safety

Strategy, as well as many others across the world to ensure that we are aligned international best practice. One of the first steps towards improving water safety has been to standardize the training of pool lifeguards in Bahrain. So far over 140 lifeguards have been trained to an international standard, and through working with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority, have established this as the required standard for all lifeguards working at swimming pools across the Kingdom. This consistency in training will help to ensure that swimmers can enjoy the water, knowing that lifeguards have the skills and

knowledge to ensure they are safe.

DEVELOPING SWIMMING POOL GUIDELINES A swimming pool safety guideline is yet another aspect that the organisation has developed. Any hotel or entity that has a swimming pool will have to follow certain safety guidelines to make sure they are doing everything in their capacity to ensure the pool is safe. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority have recently made compliance with the guidelines a mandatory requirement for any hotel with swimming facilities, and hotels will not be able to renew their CR unless they can demonstrate that they have implemented

the required changes. The organization is also working with other government bodies to ensure that all other swimming pools meet the required standards to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming environment for all. Phase 1 of the guidelines have just been released, with further guidelines to follow later this year.

TRAINING The Pool Lifeguard course is four full days, and lifeguards learn to perform first aid for a range of medical emergencies, how to perform safe rescues, and methods of effective supervision and accident prevention. In addition, Royal Life Saving Bahrain has a number of internationally recognised first aid courses for people of all ages, including programmes for children. So far, they have trained over 400 children to perform CPR. Trained lifeguards are just one aspect of water safety, and they soon are launching their “swim for safety course, a 12 lesson programme for people of all ages, which will teach participants the basic survival swimming skills necessary to help themselves if they ever fall into water or get into trouble while swimming.

BUILDING LIFEGUARD COMMUNITY Currently, we do not have many Bahraini lifeguards, and we would like to change this scenario. There is a career progression for lifeguards to move up to being supervisors and to become operation managers. We also would like to create programs to get more Bahrainis first of all to know how to swim then train them so they would know about being a pool lifeguard, beach lifeguard background. They would be given the opportunity to do their internship in Srilanka or Australia and come back and work in Bahrain in that kind of field. Right now out of the 100 people we have trained, only three were Bahrainis. So we need the Bahrain community to understand that it is a different fun kind of job and with the many beaches coming up we would need more beach lifeguards as well. Everybody can be a lifesaver, and they encourage people to learn how to do first aid, CPR because this does not just happen around a swimming pool. They strive to educate the people with these skills so that there is better community engagement in the population.

etting go of your body while dancing to the music gives you double power as it calms your mind and helps your body relax. Dancing when you go out with friends or maybe alone in your room is equivalent to the long useful physical exercise in the gym. In the process of dancing, you use muscle groups and releases endorphins that result in feelings of well-being and happiness. So if you are in a bad mood then it is quite simple. Dance it out!

DANCE POWER TO YOU! What can help a person to relax, unwind and have a good time? And that friends would be DANCE!

Dance is a form of expression that showcases your emotions and feelings be it when you are happy or sad. It is a form of communication that many people nowadays adopt. If you’re sad, dance. If you’re happy, dance. Make dance your body language as it helps develop flexibility, improve balance and coordination. And most importantly - dance enhances self-confidence, which is very necessary for everyone. When you turn on that music, feel it rise through your body as you move to the rhythm. Life will be so much easier if you have such an incredible way of expressing yourself rather than resorting to violent ways when you are upset. Incendiary dance training based on Latin rhythms is our Zumba. It is amazing how Zumba combines elements of hip-hop, salsa and samba. This is, in my opinion, is a super mix, with the help of which people can burn their calories. If you like to improvise then hip hop is freestyle. The studio at Spartan Fitness room helped me improve my skills. Let’s improve ourselves together. GAME ON FITNESS Who said getting into shape and being fit was all about work. Add a twist to your workout sessions and play a game that would make it all the more lively. Play to get fit!

THE VORTEX

BEAR CRAWLS As the name sounds, each player must strike a bear pose. Yes, that would actually mean hands in the air, feet crawling, head down. That’s it. The purpose behind the exercise is for people to recognize how weak their hips, shoulders, and core are, and how great actual bears are for being able to hit 30 miles per hour moving like this.

STONE, PAPER, SCISSORS No this is not the hand game but actual physical version of it. All you need to do is challenge the other player while you play stone, paper, scissors while doing squats. The person who loses the game has to run to the corner of the park and do a challenging exercise.

40

POWERUP | MAY 2018

Each player is put into a particular category, such as, married or scared of spiders etc. The so-called tribe runs around in a circle continuously while a leader yells out a category. If that category applies to you, you run into the middle and perform the stated exercise (burpee, pushup, etc.), then return to the vortex. Plus point is you get to know everyone within your group.

BOJAN MANDARIC

HOISTEES

INDIANA JONES

A hoistee is a partner exercise where the movement of a squat jump is extended all the way down to a sitting position. Partners start by facing each other, holding hands, and touching toes. Then, both partners go down to a sitting position while their toes maintain contact. Once on the ground, they spring back up by pulling on each other’s hands and pushing against each other’s toes to propel themselves up into the jump. At the top of every jump, they yell out, “HOISTEE!” The silliness of the exercise distracts the participants from the fact that each partner is completing a very hard and complex movement that involves a wide range of motion of the lower body, upper body, and core muscles.

This game requires teams of five to 10 people. People are required to stand in a straight line and push each other up a hill. The person in the back sprints to the front, breaking up the long hike up the hill into shorter, higher-intensity intervals. Once at the front, that person slows down to a normal running pace. Runners are teamed up according to speed, so everyone is pushing to the limit.

TAP BALL COMPLIMENT SQUATS While facing a fellow runner and doing squats, compliment your partner with a straight face in an effort to make him or her laugh. If you are successful, you run to your next opponent, and the laughing loser of the two of you returns to the bottom of the line.

Place the players in teams of 2 to 10 people, and have them take turns hitting the ball into the air. The team that keeps it in the air longest wins. It’s not about simply running around for the ball, the fitness element comes into play with players having to complete a quick exercise like a certain number of burpees or squat jumps before they can hit the ball again. The nature and intensity of the exercise used can be changed so that this game is suitable as anything from a warm-up to a finisher.

SKYDIVING

WHAT DO THEY DO BEFORE THE COMPETITON? In Bahrain, the skydivers train during the month of June until September. They have a mix of indoor and outdoor training. Indoor training alone isn’t enough. Before the competitions, the skydivers do a special training which consists of quite a lot of jumps.

WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE THE JUMP Coach Oleg Pavlenco works around the targets he has set for each athlete. It is important for them to reach each checkpoint. There are quite a lot of options for competitive skydiving and they are formation skydiving, freestyle and free-flying, style skydiving, skysurfing, swooping skydiving, accuracy landings after skydiving and canopy formation when skydiving.

THE TEAM PRACTICES ACCURACY LANDING

HOW TO PACK YOUR PARACHUTE?

Style and accuracy are often combined at competition level even though they are two different skydiving disciplines. Precision is key for both subjects, for style in freefall, and for accuracy whilst landing. They are the earliest parachute disciplines and both focus on technical merit in terms of exactness. Style and accuracy are known as the classics. They are the traditional disciplines of parachuting and are focused on technical excellence in terms of preciseness. These two disciplines go alongside each other. In an accuracy competition, each competitor takes their turn in landing on an electronic disk that is just 3 centimetres in diameter. The disk is mounted on a large inflatable mat, called a tuffet, that is 5 metres in diameter. Whilst competition is a solo event, accuracy competitions also involve teams, and individual scores are added together to find the most skilled team. International competitions only involve individuals, however, each skydiver is also representing their home country, so each countries scores are combined to find the nation most skilled at accuracy.

There are four stages mainly into packing your parachute.

1

The first check is the lines. Make sure the lines are straight and not tangled. Most malfunctions are caused by the lines. If they look neat, they’ll open neatly. If they look messy then the opening is also bound to look messy as well. The packing tabs are attached to the lines. This to make sure that the lines are straight and adjusted.

2

The second check is the folds of the canopy.

3

The third check is packing it into the bag.

fourth stage is stowing 4 The the lines. When you stow the

lines, its bent and put in a bungee to hold it in place. So when it opens it goes one stage at a time, in order. If it doesn’t go in order, the lines end to wrap around the bag. It keeps it in place.

SKYDIVING

IDEAL CONDITIONS TO GO FOR SKYDIVING The best conditions to go skydiving is when you have consistent winds. If its 5-knot winds then it is good as it gives you direction and range of movements as you can use the wind to your advantage. No wind is a problem as you won’t be going fast forward. You should be able to come straight down. If it’s too windy you would go backwards which is too dangerous. When you make the jump you need to look at the weather. Look at the direction of the wind. When you are high up you wouldn’t know which is why there are flags placed where you will be able to see the direction.

ARE YOU INTERES TED?

THE RESERVE PARACHUTE CAN DEPLOY ITSELF

HERE’S WH YOU NEE AT D TO KNOW

Every LISC tandem skydiving rig (and pretty much every smart sports skydiver’s rig) has a little bit of magic attached: an AAD, or automatic activation device. The AAD is a little gizmo that identifies descent rate and altitude in real time, checking to see if the main parachute has been deployed by the critical altitude. If it hasn’t, the AAD cuts the reserve loop, deploying the reserve parachute no matter what, even without any human input. Doesn’t that feel good to know?

It depends on you and how keen you are

THE RESERVE PARACHUTE IS TREATED AS SACRED The FAA requires that every skydiving reserve parachute is inspected and repacked every 180 days--whether it has been used or not. Each time it’s done, the FAA-certified rigging professional that does the job has to sign off on it and close the container with a little metal seal bearing his or her initials. If a skydiver shows up to a dropzone and that little seal of responsibility is missing, the jumper is not allowed to jump that rig.

48

POWERUP | MAY 2018

On a skydiving course, you complete about 20 jumps under instruction. You are not attached to your instructors and you have to pull your own parachute and fly your own canopy. Tandem is only one jump and not a qualifying skydive. You are attached to your instructor in a harness. The instructor will pull the parachute and fly the canopy. The first part of being a student is in ground school where you learn all the fundamentals of the sport and the equipment.

Like Monaco and Singapore, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is a street race and the Baku City Circuit is the fastest of them all. It was designed by German engineer Hermann Tilke to encompass most of the city’s major landmarks, so it winds along the old fortress walls, up historic Istiglaliyyat Street and onto the finishing straight which runs parallel to the Seaside Boulevard.

A DAY ON 2 WHEELERS What better way to spend the weekend than on a twowheeler touring one of the most incredible places in the Middle East. It’s better to go on a ride with an enthusiastic bunch and Bench Medina can vouch for that.

The ride started in the evening with a brief orientation about the route and of course safety measures. Bike rides are proven to take you away from the negative and swirling thoughts. The ride started from Zayed town and headed over to Al Jazayir in Zallaq. Passing gravity village, the boys made their way to Saar and finished the ride in Adliya. The wind and the warm breeze on my face remind me of the time when I was riding my motorbike home. Strolling around the city, enjoying that rush and thrill on the two wheels was just like taking a trip down memory lane. The freedom’s scooter group is yet another bunch of exciting bikers that helps one to stay in shape. Before you join a motorcycle club make sure the routine suits you best. VETTEL DRIVES TO VICTORY DESPITE WORN OUT TYRES It was quite an exhilarating weekend for Sebastian Vettel as he marked his 200th Grand Prix. It was a nail-biting race as Ferrari and Mercedes fought tooth and nail until the finish. Vettel tried his best to make the most out of his worn out tyres. According to Pirelli, the yellow-walled soft tyres were good for up to thirty laps but due to the tactics that were switched in between the race, Vettel got 39 laps out of it. The ten laps were stunning as we

Either Mercedes would have charged or one of the tyres would have been busted. Neither happened! It was clearly Vettel’s race as he grabbed his 49th victory from the 200 F1 starts.

The Bahrain GP is not one Aston Martin Red Bull racing team will be wanting to remember, with Ricciardo retiring moments after teammate Max Verstappen picked up a puncture from a clash with Lewis Hamilton for ninth place, the resulting damage ending the team’s race after just four laps.

THE PITSTOP THAT WENT WRONG Kimi Raikkonen has had better days than this for sure! Ahead of Hamilton, he was called into the pits in the 36th lap. Three of Raikkonen’s wheels were changed but the left rear wouldn’t come off. While mechanics were still trying to release it, Raikkonen got the green light and drove off – gruesomely snapping the lower leg of one of his crew in the process. Raikkonen was told to stop immediately, outside the Force India garage, while the unfortunate mechanic lay on the ground, awaiting a stretcher to take him off to be operated on.

ASTON MARTIN RED BULL RACING TEAM DIDN’T STAND A CHANCE Into the first few laps, it was game over for both Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. Daniel was able to maintain his fourth position with just eight corners until he had to retire due to major electrical failure. “Coming in to turn eight I lost all power, everything switched off without warning and I couldn’t do anything,” Ricciardo said.

GET FIT AND ACTIVE AT FITNESS FOR LIFE A must try is the Fitness For Life which is the new and improved health club at Al Areen Palace and Spa. It doesn’t matter if you are going as an individual or with your family as there’s so much going on to keep everyone engaged. Get fit as a family. Introducing the newly renovated gym. Dr. Essa said, “We have changed the complete feel of the gym with vibrant colors and latest equipments. Everyone one is busy and when they make an effort to come, it must be worth it and we understand that aspect and have created this top notch health club”. From boxing to children’s Zumba classes, you name it, it’s

there. There is even a kids club with programs to help children develop active, positive lifestyles. Dr. Essa believes that, integrating knowledge and activity will help convince children that exercise is important to their well-being and increase the chance that physical activity will become a permanent part of their daily lives.

RIGHT CHOICE, RIGHT FOOD Most people know that good nutrition and physical activity goes a long way. Dr. Essa is very hands on in implementing the new program. Every month he, ensure that expert nutritionists are brought in to train the staff to keep them updated with the latest

programs and remedies. His main goal is to provide quality by making sure that services are upgraded and are of top quality. Keeping people informed and educating them about their choices is important. Al Areen have also introduced the calorie sheet to allow our vacationers to make a healthy choice. There is a range of 100 to 500 calories with colour coding based on each food that is provided. Each card also has a variety of inspirational quotes to feed your thoughts while you are munching. According to Dr. Essa, creative and quality food is at the top of the list.

WE CARE The backbone of any organisation is the staff and that is why Al Areen Spa makes sure their employees are taken care of. “If you need to be the top destination, then you need to be different. You need to be unique; you need to make sure your employees have that passion to work. Our staff is also our top priority when it comes to the success of the organisation. For this reason, we have created a program called We Care. We touch base on everything that they need and we started by conducting a survey. Questions addressed their problems be it transportation, accommodation, food and so on. We make sure they are treated well be it their stay, food and other areas. If we don’t care for them then how can we expect them to treat the customers well? It all begins in the way we treat them so it is vital to address their needs first. We engage them in team building and many activities that help in communication skills. We strive to provide them with the right environment”.

So at the end of the day, it is really important to be meticulous and look at every single detail to get an incredible result.

STAY HYDRATED! It sounds obvious, but it is easy to forget to drink enough water when you are swimming. The sea water around Bahrain can reach temperatures as high as 32 degrees in the height of summer, so you will be sweating even when you are trying to cool off! Dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion and in some

YOUR CHILD, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY One of the most common misconceptions about lifeguards is that they are ultimately responsible for supervising children. Correct supervision of children is always the parent or guardian’s responsibility. A lifeguard’s role is to prevent accidents and ensure that all pool users are safe (up to 2500 people in some locations!) and to respond in the event of an emergency. Below is what RLSB recommends as correct supervision,

REACH OR THROW, DON’T GO! When we see someone in trouble in the water, instinctively people often jump straight in to try and help. However, once you are in the water, you are in danger too, and you can be of no help if you also get hurt. When drowning, people will naturally try to grab hold of you, and if the water is deep or you are not a strong swimmer, you could easily get into trouble. Your own safety is your main priority.

Any child that is five years old or below must be directly supervised in the water by a parent or guardian over 16 years old during unprogrammed activities. The parent/ guardian must be in the water, and within arm’s reach of the child at all times. An unprogrammed activity is any activity that is open to members of the public for recreational swimming without direct control or instruction by a trainer/ organizer. Children under 10 years old must be accompanied into the swimming facility

by a responsible parent or guardian over 16 years old. They must be constantly and actively supervised and the parent or guardian must be positioned to have a clear view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them and the child/ children To avoid being turned away, and some disappointed little ones, It's always worth checking the policy wherever you plan to swim, as it may vary between locations.

BUDDY UP! Swimming alone can be dangerous, especially in open waters. The rise in the popularity of triathlon and other swimming events means more and more people are heading out, often in remote locations. Whenever possible, go with a friend (it’s someone to race if nothing else!) If that’s not possible, make sure you tell someone where you are going and when, and carry something that floats and can support you should you get into trouble. We are not suggesting that you wear a life jacket, but something like a kickboard would be good! Even the strongest swimmers can get cramp!

situation and look around you for anything that you could use to reach out or throw to the person and pull them to safety. It could be a rope, a tree branch or even a mop! If there isn’t, look for anything that floats that you could throw to help them stay afloat until help arrives. If you are out on a boat or jet ski to make sure that everyone is wearing a properly fitted lifejacket at all times.

In the event of an emergency, the first thing you need to do is call for help. Next, assess the

Using smaller plates is one of the oldest tricks in the book. When you take a small plate you tend to take smaller portions which would actually look big on your plate. You are tricking your brain into feeling fuller with less total food. Yes, this is an easy way to control your intake and ensure you do not overeat.

DON’T STOCK JUNK FOOD Make sure your pantry is stocked with more healthy food than chips or any other junk food. Opt to revamp your food list with healthy snacks that are sure to keep you healthy, satisfied and wanting for more. Select goodies that are easier for you to manage.

10 11

PLAN YOUR MEALS Make sure you plan your breakfast, lunch and dinner so that you are prepared for it. If you tend to run late you know what to do instead of grabbing an unhealthy meal at the last minute. Preplan so that you are able to stick to your calorie allowance. Try making a shopping list every weekend which would help you step it up.

ACTIVE & HEALTHIER OFFICE SPACE It’s time that organisations make sure that their employees are fit and not just a desk jockey. The key to an efficient work style is realising the importance of rest, mental health and collaboration in the workplace. You need to have a good work/ life balance and not be drowned under so much stress and pressure.

PET WORKOUTS How fun would it be to workout with your furry friend. They motivate you, never cancels on you, don’t complain and more importantly, it doesn’t feel like you are actually working out. Stay fit together!

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD! It’s important to look good and it’s time to update your workout fashion style. There are plenty of activewear that hit the stores this year with cutting edge technology to make sure you look good. Fabrics and styles are getting cosier with super-soft sustainable modal and cotton. This is sure to boost your confidence!

DESTINATIONS SPOTS ARE IN FUNCTIONAL FITNESS It’s not about working out in that prescribed time of the day. Rather be conscious and find a chance to stay active throughout the day. Opt for the stairs rather than the lift. You know, lifting groceries is actually strength training, climbing stairs are cardio and why not go sfor an exercise ball instead of your recliners. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

It’s time to get off that system and head out to a relaxing spot to unplug and unwind. Super-cool phone-free social clubs, purposefully no-WiFi cafes, and other environments for IRL connection are on the rise—and in demand. Making time to unplug is a higher priority than ever before, and places that help you put your phones down are popping up everywhere. Some restaurants are serving up discounts if you power down.
