FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD

I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problem-solving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise

HEALTH IS A LIFESTYLE AND I CHOSE IT

IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us. I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

YOU CAN NEVER KEEP ME DOWN By Dr. Shk. Saqer Al Khalifa

MAY AL HAJI’S ROAD TO GLORY AT IRONMAN HAMBURG

While talent and skills are important for getting ahead, grit is the biggest predictor of how successful you’ll ultimately be according to research.

n the late 90’s, I was feeling down while driving my 2-door ’96 Nissan Safari in the middle of the night to Kuwait. My brother and cousin were both asleep while I was trying to navigate through the roads wanting to reach our destination before sunrise. There were barely any cars on the road and the only sound I could hear were the car’s engine, the wind, and the noise caused by driving over the occasional potholes.

It is the resilience to fight back when a match or a competition gets tough. It’s the will to push beyond one’s current physical capacities and going after the things you want, obstacles be damned.

18

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2019

I

After 4 hours of driving with only 50 meters visibility ahead of me, the sun finally de ided to rise y brother o e up and remembered that he had a new song that he had wanted to play on the car’s stereo so he played the cassette tape when we reached downtown Kuwait City. We rolled down the windows and turned up the volume. It was one of the most catchy songs

that brought life into my very tired and sleepy self. It was Chumbawamba’s song alled “ et no ed o n” Since that day, whenever life would thro a pun h at me, ould get ba up again while remembering the lyrics of the song “ get no ed do n ut get up again ou are ne er gonna eep me do n”

GETTING UP AGAIN hose lyri s ame ba to me when I was following my friends in IRONMAN Hamburg who were being led by my friend and colleague, May l a i ha e no n ay sin e our days ith ahrain Road Runners and more re ently ith ahrain riathlon Association. Everyone who follow sports ne s in ahrain ould no that she completed the IRONMAN Hamburg with an extremely impressive

time. There were, however, a sequence of e ents that too pla e during the race that I believe everyone should pay careful attention to. These, in my view, are nothing less than impressive and inspiring.

Today, May with a full-time job and a grueling hour ee ly training schedule, still has no middleman bet een her and her ids t is ery inspiring as it ta es extreme dis ipline, dedication and commendable time management s ills to uggle it all

SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE COURSE To be a successful athlete, there are two elements that you must have that I see in May’s story. First, the resolve to never give up . Second, the support from your family at a very early age. t the beginning of the bi e segment of the competition, May fell off her bicycle and injured herself. This leg usually lasts about 6 hours followed by approximately a 4 and a half hour run. Since she was injured at the beginning of the bi e segment, it ould ha e meant that she would been racing in that condition for a good 10 straight hours. Ten hours of having to power through the pain, bruises and the deep cuts! May was eventually patched up by the medical team on site and never once considered giving up on the race or gi ing in to pain illers

THE BAHRAINI RESOLVE A few months ago, a friend of mine as ed me about the ahraini hara ter e as ed hat as so spe ial about the ahraini that ma es him stand out among all the other people from around the world. I answered that ahrainis are no n to ne er gi e up They remain optimistic and positive in the face of trials and hardships. In sports, that is what you need. ahrain is a small ountry ith a small population and yet we are well represented in major events around the orld li e the one in amburg, ermany ay and the ahraini team participating at the IRONMAN Hamburg represented our country very ell n ured or not, the true ahraini hara ter of pi ing oneself up and not accepting defeat was evident and that truly deserves a lot of respect. The second trait, unfortunately, does not exist as much in this part of the world but I have seen how signifi antly positi e it an be hen was living in America. Family support is not something that we should ever discount. I believe that we are suffering from hat is no n as the “ il urse” et een us and our o n ids are nannies, housemaids and even drivers.

AN INSPIRATION TO MANY

Though life circumstances may knock you down, you must decide to get back up again and never let anything keep you down. ur “oil money” paid oursel es a ay from our ids e say goodbye to our ids at home they get to be ta en to school, after school activities, games or practices and even put to sleep not by us- the parents. The result of this cycle can be disastrous.

FAMILY FIRST ay l a i is one of the lu y ahrainis ho ere blessed ith both parents supporting her from an early age. Her late father, as she would often share, too her to training sessions and matches when she was a young tennis

I truly admire May because of how much inspiration she gives to all of us. No matter how late her day has ended, not a ing up at am to train the next day - every single day - has never been an option. She is not a robot and just li e all of us, fear is al ays present uring the s imming leg of a triathlon, she, li e the rest of us al ays fear being punched or swam over right at the beginning of the race. Even after many hours of swim practices, fear will always reep in, but ust li e ay, e must learn not to let fear control us and affect our performance.

BACK ON TRACK fter the bi e segment of the triathlon, May bravely ran a marathon: a full m run ith bruises and uts ithin an impressi e time ard or and dedi ation allo ed for her to finish strong had as ed her after the ra e if she struggled to finish the last m of the run and in true May fashion, her reply was that she actually felt that she had ran the fastest at the end. The adrenaline and the excitement of ha ing finished an R N N after a fall, which could have ended her efforts 10 hours earlier, helped to push her to ards the finish line The fact remains that we should never judge whether we win or lose based on our relative position in the race. hat e should do instead is redefine winning by realising that winning is performing the best that we can and losing, e en if you ame first, is hen you do not give it your all. May’s inspirational story is for us to learn from ou annot dis ount the benefits of familial intera tion and support, and always remember that though life ir umstan es may no you do n, you must de ide to get ba up again and ne er let anything eep you down.

SPORTS SAFETY

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SPORTS SAFETY Participation in any sports, whether it’s recreational like bike riding or football, improve the social and physical wellbeing of young children and can teach them to stretch their limits and learn sportsmanship and discipline. And like any sport, it also carries the potential for injury.

t is estimated that more than 2.6 million children under the age of 19 are treated in emergency rooms each year for sports and recreation-related injuries in the United States.

I

Urologic injuries in children can result from all sports but most especially in contact sports and even children in supervised sports who are generally safe can still experience accidents. The most common urological injuries related to sports include, but not limited to, kidney injuries in both girls and boys and scrotal injury with trauma to the testicles in boys. However, other non-

20

POWERUP | SEPTEMBER 2019

urological injuries are not uncommon, such as minor bruises, sprains, and strains. Teen athletes are more likely to sustain more severe injuries, including broken bones and torn ligaments and even more severe brain injuries including concussion, haemorrhage and spinal cord injuries. By knowing the causes of sports injuries and how to prevent them, you can help make athletics a positive experience for your child. Kids younger than 8 years old are particularly at risk as they are less coordinated and have slower reaction times than adults because they are still growing and developing. Their bodies also mature at different rates, with differences

in height and weight between kids of the same age. And when kids of varying sizes play sports together, there can be an increased risk of injury. As kids grow bigger and stronger, the potential for injury increases, largely because of the amount of force involved. For example a collision between two 8-year-old football or basketball players who weigh 25 or 30kg each do not produce as much force as that produced by two 16-yearold high school football or basketball players who may each weigh up to 70 kg. Kids may also not be able to judge the risks of certain activities as well as adults which could lead to injuries.

PREVENTING SPORTS INJURIES You can help protect your kids from being injured by following some simple guidelines:

PROPER PREPARATION Make sure that they know how to play the sport before going out on the field Kids should be adequately prepared with warm-ups and training sessions before practices and before games. This will help to ensure that they will have fun and reduce the chances of an injury. They also should drink plenty of fluids and be allo ed periods

USE OF PROPER EQUIPMENT It’s important for the kids to use proper equipment and safety materials appropriate for each sport. For example, they should wear helmets for baseball, softball, bicycle riding, skating or riding scooters and skateboards. Ask your child’s coach about the appropriate helmets, shoes, mouthguards, athletic cups and supporters, and padding.

ADULT SUPERVISION AND COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

Any team sport or activity that kids participate in should be supervised preferably by a ualified adult e should select teams that have the same commitment to safety and injury prevention. The team coach or supervisor should have training in first aid and resus itation for any emergency and or trauma, and the coach’s philosophy should promote players’ wellbeing and encourage kids to play safe by enforcing playing rules and ensuring that safety equipment is used at all times. nd finally, ma e sure that ids play sports that match their skill level, size, and physical and emotional maturity. KARTING

KARTING FUN AND ADRENALINE INFUSED Female karting driver, Tarryn Pods, drives the tyre track at Gulf Speed One for the first time and shares her story and love for the sport with PowerUp. PowerUp graciously invited me to try out the race track at Gulf Speed One in Juffair. It was a great opportunity to experience the track for the first time and I was reminded of when I first started out in the sport so many years ago.

y interest in karting started much later in life than most. A few friends decided that we should try out the new karting track that had just opened in Sakhir. We opted to do a mini gp which included a qualifying session and two race sessions. I was by no means the fastest but thankfully also not the slowest in the group. The passion had begun and during the following year I would go down to the track and do practice sessions to try and beat my times; watching and learning from more experienced drivers.

TRACK-MINDED FEMME Towards the end of 2012, a friend and I were encouraged to join an SSWS race which is a leisure karting series where drivers can use the karts available from the track (SODI Karts) to earn points, and if they finish first in Bahrain they will have a chance to compete at the SODI World Finals. It was a great learning experience and I competed in a few races during the 2012-2013 season to gain more knowledge. I was encouraged by the track staff and lucky enough to befriend one (ESPO) who helped to train me, showing me where to brake and the correct racing lines and improve on my overall times. n No ember , ualified to oin the Red ull art fight, here the fastest ualifiers ompeted for a han e to dri e at the Red ull art fight finals Two groups of 20 racers competed for a spot in the final he top ould make it through to the next round, I

My time with the team was a great experience and I will be forever thankful to the team for giving me the chance to race with them. 2015 saw me compete in my first full season and as delighted to finish 10th overall for the season. The following season, I was 12th overall. It has been such a great experience and to be the only female driver competing for the full season

made it even more special. Since then I have had the opportunity to teach students who have wanted to start karting. If you wish to take up karting competitively, you will need to have your own safety gear ith spe ifi safety ratings, including a helmet, racing overalls, gloves and racing shoes. I recently had the opportunity to experience a drive around the Gulf Speed One track. Adults have the option of a single (6hp) or double (12 hp) engine kart to drive.

But this is going to be one of the biggest things we’ve done at BRAVE Combat Federation. The auction is fully focused on how much mixed martial arts can contribute to the community. 2

SUPPORTED BACK BENDS

Backbends can seem intimidating but you don’t have to be a contortionist or drop into a Full Wheel from standing to reap the heart and hest opening benefits this pose delivers. Possibly the hardest part about backbends is that they go against the natural way we hold and move our bodies. We slouch forward and move forward; backbends take us the opposite direction. They force us to be a bit vulnerable—essentially removing the shield that protects our hearts and emotions.

3

MOON SALUTATION

The Moon Salutation, is a series of poses performed in a particular sequence to create a ooling flo of mo ement i e the popular Sun Salutations, each pose in a Moon Salutation is coordinated with your breathing: Inhale to extend, and exhale to bend. But unlike Sun Salutations, which focus on heating and stimulating the body, Moon Salutations are cooling and quieting. They are used to calm the mind and to draw one’s awareness inwards. Moon Salutations are useful when temperatures are high and when a tranquil, quiet presence is required.

It’s okay to start small, walk around your house, do some stretching at your desk at work, or start walking a few miles in the evening. As you practice paying attention to your body, you’ll notice more and more opportunities to keep your body moving during the day, and you’ll be aware of which of those opportunities you take, and which ones you should avoid.

It’s no secret that our bodies need physical activity in order to stay healthy, but you may not have onsidered the flipside staying sedentary for long periods of time (eight hours in front of the computer at work, or an evening on the couch watching television) is actually dangerous. Researchers have found that sitting down for long periods of time can have seriously negative effects on the body’s cholesterol levels and insulin effectiveness, and it can also cause the leg muscles to lose their ability to remove harmful lipoproteins from the blood. This is scary news for those of us who have desk jobs and love to spend evenings watching TV or browsing on our mobile phones. It is heartbreaking to see many plastic items and wastes from construction sites floating on the aters or scattered along the shore. We always take a break from training by doing easy paddles towards any floating trash e see and we pick them up, dump them on our boat, continue on with training and throw out the trash once we are done. We help clean as we go while training but we also take time to be purposeful about keeping the environment clean for us who are into water sports and of course for the safety of those living in the sea. Our hope is that we all take responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of our surroundings. Let’s pick up after ourselves. Let’s throw trash to its right place. Let’s support events that are organised by beach clean up groups. Let’s choose to do the right thing by the environment... all... the... time! Mother earth will thank us!

CHILD CARE

SUMMER CAMPS PROMOTING CHILD HEALTH Children these days tend to have an unhealthy lifestyle. Apart from having a sedentary lifestyle, with the onslaught of more laid back activities like watching TV and spending countless hours on video games and social media, nutrition has also taken a nosedive with their general preference for junk food. Dr Mohammed Salman, shares some advice on the benefits of summer camps to child’s health.

Dr. Mohammed Salman Almaliki is a pediatric specialist at Alkindi Specialised Hospital. He has over 20 years of experience in child healthcare.

I believe that there are two important questions that need to be addressed in order for us to develop effective summer programs for our children: How healthy are our children? And what are the biggest issues that threaten their well-being? Recent studies show that infectious diseases are no longer the major threat to the health of our children as immunization programs are now prevalent in most de eloping ountries he

holidays can be seemingly endless when you have young children and teenagers to entertain, so it is no surprise that summer camps have become a popular choice for many families. aithful to the brand’s tennis heritage, the Courtline is a sneaker which catches the eye with its sleek design and timeless elegance.

Consisting of a classic L.12.12 sole and an upper which combines white leather and pale grey suede insets, its design makes it a classic model to have in your wardrobe. A sober aesthetic style recalls the iconic sneakers seen on the court in the 1980s, decorated only by a broad stripe of colour and a discretely embossed crocodile on the side. Its visual codes are reminiscent of the lines of a tennis court and contrast with the white upper of the perforated sneaker, echoing the handle of a racket. Refle ting a perfe t blend of style and omfort, the Courtline is a pure expression of LACOSTE’s DNA combined with the latest trends. This sneaker is ideal for purists seeking minimalist fashion with a sporty look to meet ever more dynamic everyday needs.
