FOREWORD

BAHRAIN AND SPORTS

INFLUENCING THE GCC AND THE WORLD

I strongly believe that an efficient physical education programme equips people with vital qualities, such as leadership, perseverance, social and moral character, self-esteem, commitment to teamwork, and problemsolving and organisational abilities. In today’s most challenging environment, such skill helps individuals to succeed in life, and that brings prosperity to the nation. We are always on the lookout for ways of improving facilities and practices for physical education. One example of this is that I feel we should develop a more holistic physical education policy to be implemented right from the early school stages. Possibilities for implementing such a policy are being explored. Essential life skills are so often the outcome of an effective physical education. In fact, sports have been proven to raise IQ in addition to building confidence and teaching kids about managing emotions, such as self-control. Sports help children to learn hard work, patience, persistence, and how to respond positively to setbacks and failures. Most

importantly, sports helps a child to prepare to take on the many challenges that life has to offer and emerge victorious like a champion. Sports is an important part of the culture of the Gulf countries, especially endurance horse riding and show jumping, which has an immense traditional value, although we must not forget that there are other sports and sporting events that boast a rich history for us.

Sports can be a powerful tool to promote the holistic growth and development of the youth. In Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, we are dedicated to providing all sorts of opportunities for our young people as far as sports is concerned.

Health is a lifestyle and I chose it.

I welcome PowerUp’s continued support in all areas of sports. I hope that more and more people will support local teams and sporting initiatives in their communities; educating the youth on the benefits of healthy living and a healthy lifestyle. PowerUp is a good source of information to get you started.

INDOOR SKYDIVING INFO

1st FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving 16th November 2014 iFLY Austin, Texas, USA

THE WCIS 2018 The 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving (WCIS2018) will be held at Gravity, Bahrain, from 25-28 October 2018. It promises to be the biggest and best World Cup ever! Here’s some facts you need to know.

T

he Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) - The World Air Sports Federation, was founded in 1905. Skydivers from all over the world have been waiting for this moment of recognition where the indoor skydiving collides with skydiving and the indoor sports competition becomes real. Indoor skydiving is an air sports discipline that has its roots in skydiving – but rather than jump out of a plane, athletes compete indoors inside a glass-walled, vertical windtunnel. Competitors balance on a jet of fast-moving air, and compete for either solo, with a partner, or as a team of four. Competition categories include Formation Skydiving;

8

Vertical Formation Skydiving; Freestyle or Freefly; and Dynamic. There are open, female and junior categories. The FAI World Indoor Skydiving Championship is the highest level of competition in the sport. Winning an FAI gold medal is considered the most prestigious medal a competitor can win. In November 2014, history was made in the air sports. For the first time ever Indoor Skydiving was recognized as a sport by the FAI and a World Cup was held at iFLY Austin in Texas, USA. In 2017, four wind tunnels put forth bids to host the 3rd World Cup of Indoor Skydiving - VossVind in Norway, Hurricane Factory Tatralandia

in Slovakia, Gravity Indoor Skydiving in Bahrain, and iFLY Downunder in Australia. After deliberations, the FAI committee voted and Gravity Bahrain took the majority vote, with 21 of the 66 ballots.

WHAT IS WCIS2018? WCIS – the World Cup of Indoor Skydiving – is an indoor skydiving competition held every two years, under the umbrella of the FAI, the World Airsports Federation and IPC, the International Parachuting Commission. Winners of the 3rd FAI World Cup 2018 will become official World Champions in indoor skydiving, which became recognized by IPC relatively recently. Competitors are also eligible to win a share of $200,000

INTERVIEW

A JOURNEY TO INDOOR SKYDIVING GARY SWEENEY Senior Manager/Senior Instructor at Gravity Indoor Skydiving, Bahrain

Indoor skydiving is something new in Bahrain. How was the first year of the operations? Yes, it is indeed difficult when you bring a new kind of sport to a country that doesn’t even have skydiving anyway and this is their first experience of any kind of skydiving whether indoor or outdoor. So to bring it to a country where people are not aware of the sport, we have to work hard educating people, getting them interested to have a look and give it a try. From the beginning until now, we are constantly promoting the sports and encouraging people to take part.

How long have you been practising the sport and what is it like to be an instructor now? I have been in indoor skydiving for over 10 years and about 20 years in outdoor skydiving. So I gradually combined the two. I was in skydiving first and then when flying inside tunnels started to become popular it leads me to fly in the tunnels as well. When you start using both; indoor and outdoor skydiving it just complements each other and the experience improves your skills in flying.

12

Gary Sweeney, the operations manager is one of the pioneers in Gravity. He arrived in Bahrain in May of 2015 with the surrounding area of Gravity still covered in white sand. Three years in Gravity and he is now part of the team who will be welcoming the world’s best indoor skydiving athletes to Bahrain. He shares with us his insights about the sport and what it takes to organise a World Cup. What is the difference between the indoor and the outdoor skydiving and what is unique about the flying in a tunnel? Indoor skydiving is much more accessible to everyone than the flying outdoor. Also, flying inside the tunnel reduces the fear of falling on air or any deadly accidents for first timers. When it comes to accessibility for instance, when skydiving outdoor, you need to be at least 16 to 18 years old to be able to jump out from the airplane. In indoor skydiving, you can fly people from as young as 4 years old right up to someone at the age of 100. Everyone can get to experience exactly what is like jumping out in the airplane before they even have to do the actual jump or until there are old enough to do so. One could learn everything in the tunnel as it is almost identical to jumping out of the sky. Basically, what you can do in the tunnel, you can do also in the sky and vice versa. The only difference is jumping out of the plane and falling towards the earth. In the tunnel, you can just step in and out of the tunnel whenever you want. When you

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

jump out in the airplane, you can get back into the airplane. Flying in tunnel is more accessible, and a provides a safer environment which gives everyone the opportunity to experience the sport. I advise that before they want to maybe jump out of the plane, try flying in the tunnel first. It’s the best step in learning how to fly.

What is the difference of the Gravity tunnel among the rest of the skydiving tunnels that you have visited so far? What is unique about this tunnel in Bahrain? When I first saw the building plan, I was taken aback at the size of the actual facility. If you go to the other wind tunnels in the world, it doesn’t have the same size as the one in Bahrain. Gravity’s facilities is quite big while others have small facilities. Others only have a tunnel, a changing area, and a reception desk with very minimal sections. After being built, and when I saw the actual building, I would say it is quite impressive. You can fit most of the tunnels inside this building. This is how big it is. Most tunnels don’t

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2018

have the luxury of having a huge facility. So it’s really good to have ample amount of space and it’s great for the competitions, especially if we are going to have a lot of people inside. You can keep everybody in the building, other tunnels for competitions just have enough space. Gravity could accommodate over 300 people at any given time in the building not just the competitors but the general public as well. We have a big area on the second floor with plenty of space for people to come and watch the competition.

With only three years of operations, Gravity won the bid for WCIS2018. In terms of operation, what are the preparations you have made? When we aim to host a competition and win a bid, we really need to transform the tunnel into something totally different. There are two types of tunnels, one is for business and the other one is for hosting competitions. The tunnel has to be competition ready which means having a

SPORTS & FITNESS

complete overhaul. There are a lot of things and mechanical aspects that has to be upgraded. An example would be that the whole IT software and configurations has to literally be upgraded.

In terms of the tunnel itself, what kind of maintenance and preparations has been done to ensure that everything runs flawlessly? The tunnel just recently had a major service. The Aerodium service team came to Bahrain and had a whole tunnel service, it is like bringing your car to a garage. So the whole facility has got to be inspected from top to bottom such as fine tuning, and making sure the tunnel run smoother and faster. When there’s a big number of teams competing, the tunnel has to be on its top form. There’s been upgrade on the tunnel for slight improvements to ensure its reliability to run non-stop for the competition.

How about the organising team’s preparation to host the competition? The team has organised quite big competitions already which are Flight Fighters and the Arab Cup in GCC championships. So the team already had a tester. Because when you bid for a World Cup, you have to prove before hosting the World Cup that you can run an international level competition. We’ve done two already, so technically the team have had great experience and knowhow on what it takes to host a competition. So it’s kind of already done really. It is now just doing the same but this time, in a much bigger scale.

During the competition, what is the instructor’s roles? For the instructors, it is business as usual, whether they are servicing a first time flying customers or professional flyers, it is the same kind of role. But it’s all about time keeping because

“Indoor skydiving is more accessible, and provides a safer environment which gives everyone the opportunity to experience the sport.” we will have so many people flying non-stop and back-toback during the competition. So we have to be very cautious and strict when it comes to timing. The instructor’s task is to make sure that the people who are flying are actually in the building; that they are upstairs, geared off, and ready to get in

OCTOBER 2018 | POWERUP

the tunnel. We to make sure the tunnel runs on time.

So what can you say about the readiness of the Gravity team when it comes to hosting the actual competition? Yes, we’re ready. The team has been working non-stop since winning the bid and has already done great work. We are still tweaking things here and there, getting the building ready on the outside and the inside. We probably would still be doing it right up to the last minute because there’s never really enough time as you always need more time for such big events. When the day comes, we got to keep going whether we’re ready or not. But we are pretty much ready. No one’s panicking. Everyone have their specific roles and are good at what they do. We are looking forward to welcoming the athletes and visitors this month and we hope everyone gets to enjoy the event.

WHAT IS INDOOR SKYDIVING? Indoor skydiving has grown massively in popularity in recent years. What was once a training tool just for skydivers has become an exciting day out for anyone over the age of 2. So what exactly is it, and why is it so popular?

ndoor skydiving happens in a vertical wind tunnel, also known as a ‘skydiving simulator’, which simulates the experience of freefall. It’s the perfect way to find out what skydiving feels like without jumping from an airplane! Indoor Skydiving is the simulation of true freefall conditions in a Vertical Wind Tunnel. It’s where the dream of pure human flight becomes a reality in a 100% safe environment. The number of Wind Tunnels around the world is 199 and it’s growing every day Indoor skydiving has grown massively in popularity in recent years. What was once a training tool just for skydivers has become an exciting day out for anyone over the age of 2. So what exactly is it, and why is it so popular?

Indoor Skydiving is where the dream of pure human flight becomes a reality in a 100% safe environment. HOW DOES INDOOR SKYDIVING WORK? Indoor skydiving, or wind tunnel skydiving, is done inside a big vertical cylinder known as a wind tunnel. Wind tunnels come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from 12 feet in diameter up to 17 feet. The bigger the wind tunnel, the more people can fit inside it.

OCTOBER 2018 | POWERUP

Skydiving wind tunnels work by either pushing air up from below or sucking it up from above using large fans. No matter which type of wind tunnel you fly in, the experience is the same - wind rushing up at you, holding you as you learn to fly your body through the air!

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

15

INDOOR SKYDIVING INFO

WHO CAN GO INDOOR SKYDIVING? Most indoor skydiving facilities will welcome anyone over the age of 2 years who is physically fit to fly. You’ll start with a first-timer flight, where an experienced instructor will hold on to you and keep you stable. After a few minutes of flying, you’ll be able to try things like turning and moving around by yourself.

THE SPORT OF INDOOR SKYDIVING The invention of modern wind tunnels has given skydivers a consistent and practical way to develop and hone skills that usually require jumping from a plane. Additionally, the increase in availability of wind tunnels has created a whole new genre of sport – bodyflight. It is one of the most exciting and fastest growing sports in the world.

HOW DOES INDOOR SKYDIVING COMPARE TO OUTDOOR SKYDIVING? Indoor skydiving is a ‘skydiving simulator’. That means it gives you an experience as close as possible to the real thing. In many ways, indoor skydiving is a lot like outdoor skydiving. Your body responds to the air in the same way as it does when you jump from an airplane, where you can use your arms and legs to turn and move around like you’re really flying! It’s used by skydivers to train. There are loads of professional skydivers,

16

and also hobby skydivers, who use the wind tunnel to hone their skills. There are skydiving competitions held around the world and skydiving teams go to indoor skydiving centers to practice and improve. There are many ways that indoor and outdoor skydiving differ, too. That magical experience of flying a parachute around and taking in the amazing views? That’s not available with indoor skydiving. Then there’s that moment when you jump from the airplane - there’s really nothing like it! You simply can’t simulate that feeling indoors. Indoor skydiving is great fun, but no substitute for the real thing. If you fancy taking the leap for real, check out our flight packages, we’d love to show you what skydiving is like for real!

THE BID TO OLYMPIC GAMES

INDOOR SKYDIVING AND THE OLYMPIC DRE AM The exhilarating sport of indoor skydiving is rapidly growing in popularity around the world. It is one of the fastest growing sports that has local, national and international championships, and efforts are being undertaken by the French Parachute Federation (FFP) in a quest to make the art of human flight and tunnel flying a part of the Olympic Games.

18

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

Indoor Skydiving, or “Body Flight to enthusiasts, is intense, difficult, thrilling and weird. It takes arduous training to learn how to manoeuvre your body on air. The question is... is indoor skydiving a sport? Could it be a part of the Olympic Games? Vertical wind tunnel was created as a tool for learning to control the body flight, making it possible to fly in the air, simulating free fall through created airflow (on average, about 190 km/h). Indoor Skydiving is like any physical skill and very much a sport. The FAI governing the sport is recognised as the International Federa-

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2018

tion for Air Sports. In short, Indoor Skydiving is a recognised Air Sports discipline within the FAI. It is also a form of art combined with technical elements where flyers go from upside-down spins to suddenly dropping downwards and then rocketing back up the tunnel again. People have turned it into a competitive sport in the past years. With the sport of body flight gaining more popularity and with more wind tunnels being built around the world every year, there has been a call to include indoor skydiving as part of the Olympic Games.

SPORTS & FITNESS

Chasing The Dream Every indoor skydiving athletes and enthusiasts share

the dream of flying and bringing n the sports they love in the Olympic Games. Early 2018, and there are some great advocates already sharing the message. This dream might soon become a reality. The French Parachute Federation (FFP) announced at the International Parachute Commission (IPC) plenary meeting in January 2018, their attempt to get Indoor Skydiving included in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games or in 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The proposal was supported by the IPC and the Federation

Aeronautique Internationale (FAI). The FFP bases its bid on the fact that there are two wind tunnels in the Paris area; Argenteuil, Paris la Villette and (plus other projects such as Disneyland Marne la VallÊe) plus other relatively close tunnels such as Lille. Another important point they put into consideration is the keen interest in Indoor Skydiving shown by young people and their family circle. It’s a sport that just may be ready to take off in the Olympics but is still in its early stages of discussions. We know everyone will be looking forward for seeing this amazing sport in 2024.

The secret of fitness is to find something you enjoy doing. We all know that feeling of dragging yourself to the gym. Indoor skydiving is fabulously addictive but good for you! It burns a ridiculous number of calories, helps flexibility and you don’t have to force yourself to do it. Plus, it gives you a natural high that makes you want to be even more active.

The International Parachuting Commission (IPC) recognized Indoor Skydiving in 2014 as an official discipline, with competitions to decide the global champions. For example, the 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving will be held at Gravity, Bahrain, 25-28 October 2018. Indoor skydiving is currently a test event for the Olympics and may be adopted in the next decade. WCIS2018 has a separate section for junior competitions, flyers aged from 12 to 17, so they can be champions in their own right. There are also competitions around the world where all ages compete together – and where children often beat the adults at their own game!

FAMILY People of all ages can fly – from grannies to grandsons. Children from 3 years old to centenarians have tried indoor skydiving. Most wind tunnels have Kids Clubs, offering special deals and coaching to encourage younger flyers. It takes them away from computer games and into being active. Children excel at flying because they pick it up quickly, and they love it!

SKYDIVE TRAINING

Flying in a tunnel is a very different way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or corporate event. Friends family or colleagues can fly as a group, so they share the challenge and adventure. It’s a great bonding experience, especially for people who don’t know each other well, and for team-building. Most tunnels can cater for your group afterwards, and many are in a location for other adventure sports, so you can go indoor skiing, climbing or surfing too.

If you’re thinking of trying skydiving, the tunnel is the perfect place to start. Just like learning to ski on a dry slope, you can practice the basics so you progress quickly in the real sport. Accelerated Freefall Courses are 3-day courses that teach you to skydive, on your own from the beginning, with an instructor either side. Many courses now include wind tunnel training in their syllabus, as the experience is so valuable. If you are a skydiving student struggling to progress, 15 minutes indoor skydiving will sort out your problems. Because it’s a non life-threatening environment you can relax and concentrate on flying

FOR EVERYONE

VR SKYDIVING!

Even disabled people can try indoor skydiving. People who can’t walk find they can fly – really fly – in a wind tunnel. This makes tunnel flying a perfect group activity for able-bodied and disabled people to do together. Instructors reported that there is no difference in how quickly people pick up flying if they are handicapped (assuming a reasonable degree of body control) compared to the typical member of the public. This gives disadvantaged people tremendous confidence that extends beyond the tunnel walls.

VR headsets are offered in many tunnels around the world. They project the visuals of skydiving over real places in the world. You can really experience what it’s like to skydive without ever getting in an aeroplane. All the thrill without the risk.

SPECIAL EVENT

BE INSPIRED Whenever you go to a wind tunnel you’re likely to see the most incredible levels of body flight, as individuals have applied their talents to perfect ever-more amazing tricks. Watch and be blown away by the extremes of human endeavor.

BUILDING THE WIND TUNNEL

THE WORLD’ S TA LLE ST WIND TUNNEL WITH BASE JUMPING CHAMBER Creating unique custom-made vertical wind tunnels in the world to provide the best flying experience is Aerodium’s mission. Find out the how the world’s tallest and biggest indoor skydiving tunnels was created. B Y : I V A R S B E I TA N S , C h a i r m a n o f t h e B o a r d o f A E R O D I U M

How Tom Cruise came-up with the idea in creating the largest wind tunnel

How a Shaikh from Bahrain conceptualised the creation of indoor BASE jumping

For Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise and his team needed to shoot a HALO jump scene by jumping out of an airplane at 30,000 feet with a special breathing gear. Due to the risks involved, the crew recommended that they train on the ground first to gain confidence for the actual jump. Thus, the studio requested a portable wind tunnel to be installed onsite for rehearsals. After testing Aerodium’s tunnel, Cruise was very excited and asked if we could build something bigger. We accepted the challenge and built the world’s largest open-air wind tunnel in record-breaking time.

After first meeting our Bahraini client, Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Khalifa in 2011, he showed his keenness and willingness to make something exceptional, yet superior to all existing wind tunnels. The team has proposed to create a very tall and visually appealing glass flight chamber (12m), at that time was the tallest in the world which was installed at the Gravity Indoor Skydiving facility. During this conversation, Shaikh Mohammed brought up the idea of having an office on top of the building where he could just jump into the tunnel from above. After 30 seconds of thinking, I answered, “That’s cool! Sure, let’s make it happen!” This short discussion led us in designing and building our first world BASE jumping chamber for “Gravity,” whilst keeping safety as a top priority. It has now become a standard for all recircular tunnels we build worldwide, and other companies have started copying this invention.

Trying the tunnel for the first time is like going into a cage with a tiger – you don’t know what to expect, but your curiosity takes over. Wow doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling of seven guys flying together! We were smiling from ear to ear with our emotions in overload. For the first time, we were chasing each other in the enormous flight area like kids. The open-air environment brought us the joy of being the closest thing to real skydiving we had ever experienced.

GRAVITY INDOOR SKYDIVING TUNNEL Gravity Indoor Skydiving is a recirculating Aerodium Technologies, round wall-to-wall wind tunnel, with a diameter of 4.3 meters up to a height of 5 meters then extending to 5.5 meters diameter at a height of 12 meters and a full chamber height of 19.6 meters, 12 meters of which is full glass. Gravity is one of the few wind tunnels in the world to have an entrance door into the flight chamber at a height of 14 meters, offering a B.A.S.E. Jump experience!

AERODIUM PERYTON The biggest open-air wind tunnel today, with a 6.5m x 3.5m large flight area and a smooth airflow reaching up to 220 km/h. Up to seven flyers can fly simultaneously, making the most of various skydiving positions, including static head down.

INTERVIEW

THE ROAD TO WCIS2018

M A R I A M F AT H I Marketing Manager, Gravity Indoor Skydiving Bahrain

GOALS IN RUNNING THE 3RD FAI WORLD CUP IN INDOOR SKYDIVING Gravity’s goal since day one was to elevate the Sport of Indoor Skydiving. It’s a joint effort that Gravity and many tunnels around the world have been working towards on and it’s clear to see that the standards are rising. According to Mariam, “Our aim is to raise the bar for future competitions and with that in mind, we hope to succeed in organizing the biggest indoor skydiving event yet!” “Of course, one of our biggest aims is to put Bahrain on the global map and highlight Bahrain’s role in encouraging sports and local participation on an international scale. We hope to raise more awareness about the sport of Indoor Skydiving and get more people involved in it,” she added.

THE ARAB CUP AND FLIGHT FIGHTERS THE ROAD TO WCIS One of the requirements in winning the bid for the

28

In the lead up to the 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving, starting this 25th of October 2018, we asked Gravity’s event manager Mariam Fathi about the preparations made for the event. BY: LESLEY G ALE

WCIS2018 is for Gravity to successfully run two international events to prepare the organising team in running the WCIS2018 smoothly. According to Mariam, “We learned a lot! Starting from tiny details like making sure we print the right helmet sticker that doesn’t fly off in the tunnel, to managing all the technical work that goes into running the competition. It was extremely important for us to plan these two competitions precisely for this reason. When we won the bid to host the WCIS2018 one of our disadvantages was having had little competition experience, and so we set out to organize these two meets within one year to get ourselves all prepped up for the World Cup and to prove our capabilities in hosting an event at such scale. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to organize these two competitions. It has made planning for WCS2018 so much easier and smoother. We know what needs to be done and we know what to expect, now it’s just twice as big!”

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

LIVE STREAMING AND PREPARATIONS Mariam and the team are excited to be working with EpicTech Media for the live stream of WCIS2018. EpicTech have been working over the last couple of months to create a fantastic live stream! The event will be streamed live on WCIS2018. COM from 25-28th of October. Preparations are in full swing! There’s a lot that is going on and Gravity’s team have been working collectively on various jobs including, IT, technical preparations, marketing, PR, team registration, equipment, merchandise, obtaining sponsorships and overall setup of the event within Gravity’s building and outside. Gravity will also host a small outdoor event to coincide with the World Cup for athletes, visitors and the whole family to enjoy.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES For a country that has never hosted a skydiving competition, Mariam says, “Our biggest accomplishment was winning

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2018

the bid! I can’t think of one thing that has been the main source of stress. We were faced with challenges in every area but we have overcome them.” Mariam added that “It helps to have a dedicated team who are passionate in what they do. I have anticipated some stressful times and have gone through a lot, but I’d like to think of it as a rewarding challenge.”

The BIG Day When asked what Mariam is looking forward to about the World Cup she explained, “The thing I love the most about competitions are the people; all the heroes who come together to make the games. I’m looking forward to working with my team and witnessing the outcome of months and long hours of planning. Most of all, I’m looking forward to meeting all the competitors and watching what I am sure will be an epic display of amazing flying skills.” So brace yourselves, the competition will be fierce! Best of luck to all the teams and the whole country can’t wait to meet you all at Gravity, Bahrain!

PERSONALITY

Flying VERSUS Personality Flying inside the wind tunnel takes more than just skills. It takes a great effort in building up your personality to even learn and execute those flawless moves. Tayla shares with us what it takes to begin your journey to indoor skydiving.

TA Y L A L I M A Tayla Lima is an Indoor Skydiving Instructor from Brazil. She holds both IBA and Tunnel Instructor ratings and she is passionate with her job.

I

have always noticed that flying and the way we express ourselves while flying are closely related to our personality. Undoubtedly, the more flight hours you have, partnered with coaches guiding you on how to move on air and good debriefings, helps shapes you to become an excellent pro flyer. However, there is an intrinsic part to flying which is associated with our personality, our psychological well being and on how we deal with pressure, fear, including the courage and will to be successful in this sport. As an example, a shy person will have to be determined to

46

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

overcome shyness when flying. After all, they are exposed to everyone who is watching in the tunnel. A person who has the personality of taking more risks ends up advancing faster by having confidence in manoeuvring their body without fear at high speeds. Those who struggle to work under pressure or are too proud of themselves eventually get annoyed while learning, which in turn builds up obstacles on their way to evolving as a pro flyer. Athletes have to accept that the way to success is often found in failure. That is one of the reasons I like this quote, “If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means “First Attempt In Learning.” I have come to learn that flying is a process of knowing yourself and your personality. It will allow you to work on

POWERUP | OCTOBER 2018

several aspects that you can apply in other areas of your life. You become more confident, braver, and will have the ability to learn something new. Those are crucial elements of being an amazing athlete, one needs to be constantly learning and have a strong determination to evolve. Learning to fly makes you a superhero of your personality! Being a tunnel instructor gives me the opportunity to share my experience with other people who might also feel insecure or afraid. It somehow helps others be more confident while flying inside the tunnel. It is satisfying observing this process as when the customer opens up to us, we could then offer more than just a flight experience to them. It can help first-time flyers overcome their fears and limitations. It is so rewarding being a part of something that is a first in someone’s life.

T

he first ever vertical wind tunnel on record was built by NASA in 1940 for aerodynamic research and in 1964 Jack Tiffany became the first recorded human ever to fly.

Flying in the wind tunnel is not just a sport but also an art of dancing on air. Athletes goes through rigorous training to one day be able to showcase their incredible speed and artistry of impressive movement control inside an indoor skydiving wind tunnel. Daisy Bradshaw shares some insights on the human bodyflight competitions. BY: DAISY BR ADSHAW ( I n d o o r S k y d i v i n g I n s t r u c t o r, I F LY )

Skydiving simulators have certainly advanced since then, rapidly gaining popularity with over 200 wind tunnels worldwide and countless flyers from 3 to 100 years old. Flying routines have gone viral over the internet with proflyers showing off their most complicated tricks and graceful performances. Human body flight competitions are split into four different disciplines: Formation Skydiving, Vertical Formation Skydiving, Dynamic Flying and Freestyle Flying. Freestyle flying is rapidly gaining recognition as a performing art which is why, as a flyer myself, I’d like to offer some insight on this style of flying. In a competition there are different rounds: Compulsory round and Free round lasting 45 seconds and 1 minute respectively.

“Fire this puppy up. I think I can fly. They fired it up, and I flew.” Jack Tiffany HUMAN BODY FLIGHT COMPETITIONS DISCIPLINES Formation Skydiving Vertical Formation Skydiving

2

Dynamic Flying

Freestyle Flying

In a Compulsory round, the competitor has to perform various moves which are given a score out of 10. There are six compulsory moves: 360º Barrel Roll Stall, Head Up 360º Breaker, Tucked Double Back Loops, Flip Twist sequence, Manna’s Space Lab and Thomas Flair into Head down Split (You can find tutorials for all these moves on YouTube). Points are then deducted in the case of incorrect execution and believe me,

OCTOBER 2018 | POWERUP

these moves aren’t easy. Each flyer will spend countless hours practicing these tricks as the judges are looking for perfection in each round. Free rounds are my personal favourite. Each flyer has one minute to perform a routine with or without music to show the judges what they can do in the airflow. These ‘shows’ amaze me more and more as each competition goes by - flyers are constantly coming up with new ideas and technically difficult moves to wow both the judges and audience. Flyers are practicing for countless hours and are pushing their bodies past limits you’d never think were possible. When it comes to scoring these routines, judges don’t hold back. First of all, the routine is scored a certain amount of points for difficulty: use of axis (using both Head Up and Head Down orientation), technically difficult moves, use of the whole chamber, etc. Participants are then judged during their live performance at the competition. Again, points are then deducted if their execution is sloppy, uncontrolled, imprecise, wobbly, not in frame or has missing elements to it. Presentation also plays a huge factor to the overall scoring of a routine. The composition, flow, originality and visual excitement can make a huge difference to your ranking. Of course, flying doesn’t have to be a competitive sport, it can also be a wonderful pastime for old and young at almost any fitness level. Everyone should experience the thrill of body flight at least once in their life. Thanks to aerodynamic research we can now fly without wings!

AIR DANCE

HUMAN BODY FLIGHT COMPETITIONS DISCIPLINES VERTICAL FORMATION SKYDIVING Vertical Formation Skydiving (VFS) takes Formation Skydiving and flips it vertically so flyers remain either head-up or head-down relative to the net. Similar to FS, VFS competitions split into different events based upon the number of team members participating, with separate categories based on skill.

FORMATION SKYDIVING Formation Skydiving (FS) is a traditional discipline where flyers maintain a belly-down orientation and build formations with accompanying teammates. FS is a common starting ground for new competitors because it does not require advanced freefall skill and provides measureable progress. DYNAMIC Dynamic is unlike any other discipline in that it did not originate from a traditional Skydiving discipline. Created by a group of experienced flyers looking for the structure of Formation Skydiving but the creativity of Freestyle, Dynamic competition offers both Speed rounds and Free routines. Dynamic teams are composed of 2 (D2W) or 4 (D4W) people, each person given a specific slot in line where they work to follow one another as they fly the designated sequences.

54

3RD FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 GRAVIT Y BAHRAIN

ARTISTIC FREEFLY AND FREESTYLE Freefly is an Artistic event, where two flyers perform creative routines, going for style rather than speed. The number of Rounds can vary, and each Round is judged live, where the judges use specific criteria to award scores. Freestyle is the only solo discipline currently held at IBA competitions. Flyers perform both Free and Compulsory routines 60 seconds in length. Creativity and difficulty are awarded in these disciplines as flyers work to amaze and impress the crowd and the judgeS.

3 rounds of 8 falling pushups

1/4 mile sprint

2 rounds of 8 figure-4 bridges

1/4 mile sprint

1 round of 8 floor jacks

Stand with your feet hipwidth apart and place your hands behind your head. Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower yourself into a squat before pushing yourself back into a standing position. Repeat for as long as you can manage.

push-ups Adopt a straight-arm plank position, with your hands slightly wider than (but in line with) your shoulders. Push your body towards the ground, getting your chest as close to the ground as possible, and then push back up to your straight position. Repeat for as long as you can manage.

alternating lunges

all-terrain interval ride

Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Step forward on your right leg, bending both knees so that your right knee is directly above your ankle and your left heel is lifted. Step back to your starting position and repeat on the opposite leg, continuing to switch between legs for as long as you can manage.

If you have an adjustable seat on your exercise bike, try this workout which simulates steep climbs and sharp descents. The workout combines seated climbs of 3-5 minutes. 1-minute standing climbs and 1-minute downhill sprints intersperced with gentle 1-minute seated recovery cycles. 5 mins warm-up Seated climb (mins 5-10, 12-14, 17-20) Downhill sprint (mins 10-11, 15-16, 21-22, 25-26)

butt kicks Stand with your feet hip-width apart and kick your heels up towards your glutes, pumping your arms as quickly as you can. Keep going for 75 reps.

mountain climbers

Recovery cycle (mins 11-12, 16-17, 22-23) Standing climb (mins 14-15, 20-21) Seated & Standing climb (mins 2325, change every 30 secs) 4mins cool down

Adopt a full plank position and ‘run’ with alternating knees into your chest as quickly as you can. Engage your core throughout and focus on doing the exercise at high speed.

leg raises Get down on all fours, with palms flat on the ground and shoulder-width apart. Keep your back straight and your core enganged as you raise your left leg until your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Resume the starting position and repeat on alternating legs, doing 25 reps for each leg. OCTOBER 2018 | POWERUP

HEALTH & WELLNESS

S

everal studies suggest links between nutrition and cancer, specifically to breast cancer. Just as eating and concentrating on certain foods in the diet may increase the risk of infection, focusing on others in a healthy diet can also help prevent disease or reduce risk. There are many factors that play a role in increasing the risk of breast cancer, making women more prepared, especially if several factors combine at the same time. Nutrition is one of the factors that appear to play a role:

Increase the intake of fat in large quantities, especially those saturated in animal products such as high-fat meat (sheep meat) and milk product. In addition to dealing with the trans fats found in chips, donuts and croissants . Weight gain is associated with high body fat, which increases the risk of cancer in general and breast cancer in particular. Eating processed and canned meat containing cancer-causing preservatives. Note that turkey is less dangerous than other venison meat. Eating grilled meat and foods that appear black on the surface due to overcooking, contain a carcinogen that increases the risk of infection . Women take estrogen-rich treatments during the menopause phase to reduce the symptoms associated with this stage. The use of these treatments may increase the risk of breast cancer.

BREAST CANCER

PREVENTION OF DISEASE Unsaturated fats found in fish and vegetable oils. Fibre in whole grains food, vegetables and fruits help to protect the body. It is recommended to take five servings, including three servings of vegetables and two fruits per day because it helps the digestive system to get rid of toxins faster. In addition, vegetables and fruits contain a high percentage of antioxidants that prevents cancer. Soy contains an antioxidant that prevents the formation and proliferation of cancer cells. It is recommended eating twice a week and not more as excessive intake may have side effects according to studies.

Food also plays a role in the treatment period of breast cancer. What is the type of diet that a woman should follow during the period of treatment in order to preserve her health and safety? During the treatment period, proper food plays an important role in reducing the side effects of drugs and in maintaining a healthy weight and at the same time combating the proliferation of cancer cells as well. The treatment has many side effects such as nausea, vomiting and anorexia, which negatively affects the ability of the patient to eat. The treatment also contributes to the speed of metabolism. It is noticed that the weight of the patient tends to decline at this stage, especially as the taste of the mouth changes. The patient gets a bitter or metallic taste that affects her appetite and ability to eat, aside from the psychological factor and pain. On the other hand, breast cancer treatment negatively affects the body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. At this stage, the patient needs to obtain large quantities of vitamins and minerals essential to the body. To avoid problems that may result from the side effects of the treatment, there are certain steps that the patient can follow in the food pattern followed by:

BUILDING STRENGTH IN FLE XIBILIT Y MOBILIT Y IS THE ANSWER ! Indoor skydiving is a serious sport! One needs to have the stamina and flexibility to be able to manoeuvre flawlessly inside the tunnel without getting an injury. Flexibility training is essential in avoiding injury. It also helps decrease soreness and stiffness, particularly among athletes who train at higher frequencies and intensities. Sarah has put together this helpful exercises to get you started. BY: S AR AH L AWSON

I

n order to fly well, you need to have the perfect blend of strength, stamina and flexibility. Trying to improve flexibility whilst keeping strength often seems impossible! Research has shown that stretching before training can decrease the amount of strength produced by a muscle. But when your routine depends on it, what can be done to keep a high level of both? This is where mobility comes in. Mobility is the perfect blend of strength in flexibility, where control is key. It’s all fine being able to passively stretch into a split, but if you don’t have the strength to lift the leg into that position, your performance will be hindered. End range activation (ERA) allows us to work on our flexibility whilst simultaneously improving our strength at that range. By utilizing isometric contractions (static holds) we can train our central nervous system to have active control over a particular range, teaching us to expand our useable range of motion. Here are my top exercises to work on ERA and strength in flexibility:

2. Lift Off And Hovers

to release the stretch, lift the heel off of the bench and hold for 5-10 seconds. Repeat three to four times before switching legs. You can increase the intensity by elevating the leg higher in the hamstring stretch and initiating the lift off the higher rest.

In a mermaid stretch position (the 90/90 hip position), lean forward slightly and lift the rear leg, engaging the glute and lifting the foot, knee and thigh off the floor. Hold for 5-10 seconds, 3-4 times before switching legs.

What you think, you believe!

4

As well as hydrating in the run up to the competition, be sure to sip water throughout the day. If you feel like you are fatiguing quickly, or are prone to headaches, then check your water consumption!

Avoid muscle pain and cramps by balancing your electrolytes

It sounds obvious but going in with a positive mindset can make all the difference. All too often we tell ourselves ‘I CAN’T do this’, ‘I’m NOT good enough’. If we turn those negative beliefs into positive affirmations in the present tense, your brain will start believing it. Create a mantra that feels right to you. Perhaps it’s ‘I AM good enough’, or ‘I have worked hard and DESERVE to do well’. Whatever it is, make sure it is present tense, and repeat it to yourself constantly!

Stay well fuelled

On competition day, adrenaline will be high, meaning your body will be using up your glucose stores for energy. Stay well fuelled so that you don’t cause blood sugar dips, which may also lead to a fall in concentration. Keep high energy snacks on hand, such as oat and honey bars, bananas, or seeing as you’re in the Middle East – dates!

5

Electrolytes are natural chemicals such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, and chloride, that are used by your body for regulating blood pressure, nerve signalling and maintaining fluid balance. A good balance keeps your muscles contracting and relaxing as they should! Bananas, leafy greens and avocados are great sources of electrolytes, or you can make your own electrolyte solution using coconut water or pickle juice! Or to keep it simple, dissolve some salt in a glass of water.

Trust the process

Hydration is key Competition day is what you’ve been preparing for. You’re ready, and you can do this! Along with your positive mantra, reaffirm to yourself that you have done everything you can to be ready for today. Don’t start switching things up, eating new food or trying new warm up routines on race day – this never ends well! Don’t get distracted by the other competitors, this is your time to shine, so enjoy it! Did you know physical performance can drop dramatically when you are just 2% dehydrated?
