Charlotte Tilbury Make-up Artist and Entrepreneur
B
ritish Make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury is one of the most regarded and influential practitioners of her generation. Revered for making women look sexy, beautiful and glamorous in an accessible and modern way, Charlotte is a firm advocate of the philosophy that any woman can enhance her beauty through the utilization of make-up and understand its power from a very early age. Widely acknowledged for her compelling take on femininity and consummate eye for color, Charlotte began her career in the early 1990s when the supermodel culture prevailed. Her signature look is born out of this period. However, it was not until the late 90’s that she was catapulted to the top of her profession, when she forged strong creative alliances with photographers Mert & Marcus and stylist Katie Grand that continue today. The innovational make-up looks that she executed for acclaimed campaigns such as Louis Vuitton and Giorgio Armani at the beginning of the new millennium as well as legendary shoots for Pop Magazine resolutely established her as a doyenne in her chosen field. This led to Charlotte being perceived by many a beauty editor as being one of the pioneers to bring glamour back into fashion after the fallout from the post-grunge era. It was this recognition that caught the eye of Helena Rubenstein. Charlotte was brought on board from 2003 to 2006 as Creative Director of Make-up. She capitalized on the brand’s rich heritage and propelled it into the 21st century. Charlotte furthermore conceived a sellout range of make-up in collaboration with MAC Cosmetics and Alexander McQueen. She also produced a line of triumphant
lipsticks for Armani. In 2007, Charlotte was approached by John Frieda to create a cosmetics brand that was then just a concept on a piece of paper. In record time, she devised 76 products that were named Myface and were on counter in the Fall of 2008. The collection continues to be widely feted by the beauty press, consumers and celebrities alike largely due to the superior formulas and universal appeal of the color palettes. A firm fixture on the International Collections’ circuit, Charlotte has worked on up to an astounding 42 shows in one season. She is celebrated with creating the runway makeup looks for Donna Karan, Prada, Lanvin, MIU MIU, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Chloe, Loewe and Louis Vuitton amongst countless others. She is also the only make-up artist to be featured on Style.com’s ‘Virtual Front Row’ whereby her avatar and diaries were showcased alongside other fashion luminaries such as Michael Kors and Vera Wang during the AW09 Prêt-a-Porter shows. Charlotte’s work regularly graces the pages of British, French, US and Italian Vogue as well as other esteemed fashion titles including W Magazine and Vanity Fair. Her irresistible approach to make-up also keeps her much in demand with luxury fashion companies such as Burberry, Michael Kors and Stella McCartney who regularly enlist her expertise to help visualize their campaigns. Charlotte is also a long-term collaborator with photographers Mario Testino and Mert & Marcus, amongst others, as well as the stylists Carine Roitfeld, Marie-Amelie Sauve, Alex White and Lucinda Chambers. In addition to being honored with the title “International Make-up Artist of the Year” by Procter and Gamble in 2003, Char-

lotte has also been endowed with the British Fashion Council’s “Creator of the Year” award in 2005 and in 2008 was given an accolade by MAC Cosmetics for “Lifetime Achievement in the Fashion and Beauty Industry.” In 2012 Marie Claire presented Charlotte with the Prix d’Excellence de la Mode for the runway makeup look that she created for Chloe during the time that Hannah MacGibbon was Creative Director for the label. In the Fall of last year, Charlotte launched her eponymous make-up line in the UK which was heralded as a “Makeup Revolution” by the British Sunday Times which predicted that she would be “transforming the face of the nation.” Available exclusively in Selfridges, Charlotte’s products top the Store’s Best Seller list every week. The U.S. launch occurred in September of 2018. Charlotte remembers her first connection with make-up, at the tender age of six. “I was fascinated by the effect one woman could have on entering a room, how people could be drawn to her instantly all because of her style and her beauty. I was always wondering what her secret was.” When she was 11 years old, she met the renowned make-up artist Mary Greenwell, in Formentera where she grew up, and was inspired by the Vogue covers she had worked on. She started to study the make-up in magazines, closely examining the models’ faces to work out how they could look so beautiful. Her first personal encounter with make-up, aged 13, was to change her life: “I discovered make- up at boarding school in England, and when I returned to Ibiza in the holidays, I saw what a radical effect it could have on those around me. Just by wearing a little mascara and some bronzer, people reacted differently towards me. Everyone, aged from 10 to 70, told me that I looked gorgeous and that I had really changed or grown up, but they could not work out what the difference was, they changed their reaction to me and I became instantly more popular. You cannot radically change that much in three months - It was the power of make-up. I have blonde eyelashes. Wearing mascara and eyeliner framed my eyes, changed their shape and enhanced their color,

thus bringing out and emphasizing all the other features on my face, adding definition where there was none before. The application of bronzer strengthened my bone structure and added a new radiance to my skin. That reaction changed my life.” It was at this stage that Charlotte really began to comprehend the sheer power of make-up. “It gave those who wore it a supreme confidence, an ability to attract and achieve whatever they wanted from life, whether that was a boyfriend, or a new job, or just a new sense of popularity.” Having understood the compelling effectiveness of make-up, Charlotte was hellbent on forging a career in cosmetics and studied at the Glauca Rossi School of make-up in London before assisting Mary Greenwell on shoots and shows in London, Paris and Milan. Mary Greenwell remembers her: “My first impression of Charlotte was of this beautiful, wild creature with this incredible determination and sense of herself.” Charlotte has capitalized on the glamour of the early 1990s, utilizing the technology of today’s make-up to create her own signature look. She is inspired by artists such as Picasso, Miro, Dali, Klimt, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and the work of her father, the painter Lance Tilbury. Thanks to her work for Vogue and other magazines, as well as fashion-shows and high-profile advertising campaigns for the world’s top designers, she has become famous for making women look sexy, beautiful and glamorous in a modern and accessible way. As well as enhancing the beauty of some of the most gorgeous women in the world, she can deliver a flawless complexion on anyone she works with, from young models with concerns about spots to older iconic pop and film stars. She firmly believes that you can always make skin look gorgeous if you have the right products. Charlotte’s flamboyant personality, loyalty and approachable demeanor make her much-loved and oft-requested in an industry known for its sometimes fickle nature. www.charlottetilbury.com

t is always an honor to feature empowering women from diverse backgrounds in our magazine. We may not always agree with each other’s beliefs, lifestyles or political views, but it is important to share everyone’s story, so we can find ways to learn from them and hopefully become inspired and empowered by what they have achieved. Women are being recognized as power figures, using their voices to speak out and make a difference. In every walk of life, regardless of industry or profession, women must be in the forefront, becoming positive role models for future generations. In this issue I had the pleasure to interview Actress, Singer, Television Personality, Author, Host and Entrepreneur Heather Dubrow, who is featured on our cover. Talk about vivacious and fun! What an interesting life she has. Heather is not afraid to speak her mind and makes it very clear that while her life is extremely busy with her career, being a mother and wife always comes first. Another P.O.W.E.R.-ful woman showcased in this issue is TV and radio talk show host Laura Ingraham. She is a breast cancer survivor and shares that the experience has

made her more focused on her three adopted children, family and friends. We have also featured Makeup artist and Entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury who is revered for making women feel sexy, beautiful and glamourous. Tilbury is a firm advocate of the philosophy that any woman can enhance her beauty through the utilization of make-up. One of our Rising Stars, Carlita Randall is a Counselor who has overcome many obstacles in her life including the birth of a premature daughter and a husband with a disability. Through her journey she learned steps to increase her success in her career and how to maintain healthy relationships. From well-known names to everyday hard-working successful women, what makes them unique is that they all have a different story to share about their journey to success. Their common denominator? Family comes first! Even though all of us come from different backgrounds, there is more that brings us together than separates us. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that. The women we highlight in our magazine have worked hard to achieve their success and should be acknowledged for their talents, contributions and tenacity. We are women of P.O.W.E.R. and it is our mission to mentor, inspire and empower each other to be the best we can be.

aura Ingraham is the host of FOX News Channel’s (FNC) The Ingraham Angle (weeknights 10PM/ET). She joined the network in 2007 as a contributor. As the host of The Ingraham Angle, Laura aims to cut through the Washington chatter to speak directly with unexpected voices and the actual people who are impacted by the news of the day. Each night, she challenges the decision makers to focus on everyday hard-working Americans who serve as the backbone of the nation. The program also highlights the importance of faith in our nation and reveals stories that showcase the American spirit. In addition to her role at FNC, Laura is the host of her radio program, The Laura Ingraham Show, where she is the most-listened-to woman in political talk radio on hundreds of stations nationwide. She is also the founder of LifeZette, a political and cultural website, where she serves as editor, without serving a day-to-day operational role. Prior to joining the network, Laura served as a litigator and as a Supreme Court law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas. She is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers “The Hillary Trap,” “Shut Up & Sing,” “Power to the People,” and “The Obama Diaries,” among others. Laura graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia School Of Law.
Laura Ingraham Host FOX News Channel’s How did you get started in your field/industry? In 1995 when I was a young litigator at a large DC law firm, I started writing freelance op-eds about the Clinton Administration. Suddenly, TV producers started inviting me to appear on panel shows. I thought, “This is better than keeping track of billable hours.” By 1996, I had been hired by both MSNBC and CBS as a contributor. Soon after, I became a regular on morning drive’s “Imus in the Morning,” where I officially caught the radio bug. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you’ve faced in your career? When I started out, there weren’t a lot of female conservatives in the media, so I didn’t have a clear roadmap of how to advance my career. Who was your mentor? Who influenced you the most? To my detriment, I didn’t really have a mentor in TV. My philosophical and political mentors were Ronald Reagan and Patrick Buchanan.
October is breast cancer awareness month. As a breast cancer survivor, how has this experience affected you and changed your life? As cliché as it sounds, I am more aware of the fleeting nature of time and material things. My family and friends, my faith… moments with the people I love… I’m more focused on the important stuff. As often as I can, I spend time in nature. As a supporter of many charities, could you tell us about a few of the charities that are near and dear to your heart? Food for the Poor is a highly effective and compassionate group of people who assist those most in need in Latin America and Haiti. The trip I did a few years ago with them to Guatemalan orphanages and feeding centers with my daughter was awe-inspiring. home as clean, loving and peaceful as those that the Little Sisters run across the U.S. As a single mother of three children, how do you juggle work and family life? I do my best and am blessed to have the means to hire supplemental childcare. My children have grown up in an unconventional home and have adapted well to mom’s unusual schedule and line of work. What advice could you offer to other single women who are considering adopting a child? If you feel called to do this, go into the process with eyes wide open. You are about to embark on the most important journey of your life by bringing another human being into your home to raise as your own. Adoption is rarely an easy process, and is instead one with many ups, downs, detours and disappointments. If you’re ready for that, then by all means, dive right in. It’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done—nothing comes close. Congratulations on the oneyear anniversary of “The Ingraham Angle” on the Fox News Channel. Your show is ranked among the top highest-rated cable news programs month after month, and just marked its top-rated month since its launch in October 2017. Why do you think the show is so successful? Hosting a three-hour syndicated radio show for 17 years and appearing as a regular for 15 years gave me an instant comfort with the material and the audience. But no show’s success is possible without a committed, fun, talented team behind the camera— and at Fox I’m lucky enough to have that. As a country divided by politics, how can we learn to agree to disagree and treat each other in a respectful manner while still maintaining our political stance?
10 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
The country has been filled with acrimony since our Founding — from the Civil War, duels, slanderous personal invective dating back to the 1800s, civil rights struggles, nasty no-nukes protests, to the anti-war sit-ins. Today it’s all amplified because of cell phone cameras and social media. Most Americans just want to live in peace and to be able to make a decent living for their families. The loud crowd are the perpetual malcontents who would rather shout than debate. We all should try to take down the temperature a bit. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? How does a woman project strength and toughness, and inspire professional excellence without coming off as b*tchy? That’s a tough one. Men have an easier time being demanding without offending. You are a television host, radio host, best-selling author, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of a website, a former white-collar defense attorney and Supreme Court law clerk, a cancer survivor, passionate supporter of our troops, and advocate for domestic and international adoption. What is next for Laura Ingraham? Do you have some specific goals in mind? I’m not really worried about what’s next professionally. Instead, I want to work on being a better mother, a better sister, a better aunt and a better friend. Name one outstanding quality that you think people should know about you or remember you by. I have an irreverent sense of humor. www.lauraingraham.com

Positive Psychology Kimberly B. Meere, Psychotherapist
T
here I was, in a circle with my friends at a wedding belting out the lyrics to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” at the top of my lungs. A sense of empowerment seemed to permeate the room while the song played and I found myself recalling various life struggles I had been through. All the while I sang out as if I was proclaiming to the world (ok, just myself and those next to me on the dance floor) that I will “never crumble or lay down and die and I will survive!” I could feel the endorphins flooding my brain as the song ended and wondered what it was about that song that gets even the non-dancers to the dance floor? The answer is positive psychology. Positive psychology enables people to cultivate strength and resiliency by focusing on our strengths instead of our weaknesses. The reduction of negative symptoms is simply not enough. We must also increase our positive emotions and behaviors to prevent and treat both mental health and physiological disorders. Let’s be clear this is not just happy talk. Positive psychology is more of a balanced approach to other types of therapy often focused on negative feelings, pain, and pathology. For example, business leaders that balance criticism with praise during evaluations tend to nurture the growth of their employees. It is this yin and yang effect that provides the necessary balance for personal growth as well. Martin Seligman, considered the father of positive psychology, declared in his 1998 inauguration speech to the American Psychological Association that the psychology profession was “only half baked” due to the profession having only focused on pain and weakness with no attention given to a person’s strengths and abilities (Harvard Mental Health Letter, 2008). The positive psychology process consists of exercises such as: identifying your signature strengths and using them every day, identifying three good things that happened each day and why they happened, and expressing gratitude to someone else. Many practitioners including myself have helped clients make the shift to positive techniques by replacing nighttime thoughts of personal failures with a mental montage of what went right today, making an “I did it” list instead of a to-do list, challenging irrational thoughts and keeping a gratitude journal. These tools are helpful for managing daily stress levels and balancing brain chemistry. Stress is the silent killer. Due to the havoc stress wreaks on our bodies our autonomic nervous system goes into overdrive and therefore we are not necessarily aware of the effect the stress is having on us until it’s too late. When we experience negative emotions, our corresponding mood sends negative feedback to the brain and in turn the body reacts with the what’s known as the stress response, or the fight or flight response. Positive psychology is designed to improve overall happiness and avoid the stress response by focusing the mind on positive emotions associated with the person’s strengths and utilizing tools such as learned optimism, flow (a focused mental state), and engagement in socialization to balance our emotions, thoughts, and character traits. Interestingly, positive thought
patterns such as those emphasized with positive psychology have been associated with our ability to protect against illness, manage our mental health, and protect against premature death (Kabat-Zinn, 2013). Self-efficacy or the belief that one can control their own outcomes has been cited as a strong predictor of positive health outcomes. The stronger we think we are, the stronger we become. In contrast, pessimistic thinkers are at a significantly higher risk of becoming depressed, anxious, ill and are likely to be more susceptible to disease. Dr. Emma Seppälä, Science Director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, studies happiness. She notes that women are much less likely to be happy than men and are twice as likely to become depressed as men. Dr. Seppälä, attributes this finding to the notion that many women are expected to be fully engaged in the workplace and still maintain most of the household responsibilities. In addition, women tend to put themselves last when it comes to taking care of ourselves and this is a classic mistake. Dr. Seppälä stresses the importance of taking the time to do the things you love like laughing, going to the gym, being with friends or whatever restores your body, mind, and spirit. The mind-body connection plays a major role in our wellbeing. The most important factor influencing our mental and physical health is the notion of balanced thinking. The human brain is wired to think negatively and release stress hormones to protect us from a perceived threat. The problem is the perceived threat may not actually be a threat at all and we often put our bodies through a vicious cycle of unnecessary stress triggered simply by our own reactions to situations. Being positive and optimistic can make all the difference in the world, so like Bobby McFerrin said, “Don’t worry, Be happy” and you too will survive and thrive.

How did you get started in your field/industry? After years of modeling and acting, I got married, had children, gained weight and reconsidered my career. My mother always said, “You will make a great nurse.” I love helping people, especially the helpless. What were some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? The biggest challenges in nursing these days are the changes in the role. Nurses are being forced to manage many roles and sometimes serve as providers and decision makers. This takes away the holistic care that patients need. Staffing issues are big obstacles. Also, those who are straight talkers get cast as malcontents and penalized. What is some advice that has helped you juggle your career and family life successfully? I have always told my staff that their health, welfare, and family come first before their jobs. The most important part
is finding a balance between work and family. What advice would you give to women starting out in your industry? My advice is to love the profession first before any other career benefits. When you love what you do, people will notice, and you will also

What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? I have had high goals but limited finances. When I was young, I was given responsibility for large numbers of people before I had my own life/direction worked out. What is some advice that has helped you juggle your career and family life successfully? First off, I don’t feel overly successful in this area, but a key for me has been to get up early and be mentally flexible. Be ready to take some losses gracefully and keep your priorities clearly in sight. Fights can waste valuable time and positive emotional energy. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Being free to excel and prosper without losing their lovability; to be seen as strong and competent yet tender and feminine. It doesn’t have to be either/or. What advice would you give to women starting out in your industry? Don’t ignore your moments of inspiration. Write them down. You can edit or re-think an idea later. Work from to-do lists. Take care of your health. If you have a good opportunity, marry early and stay married. Have a personal spiritual practice and be faithful to it. How did you get started in your field/industry? I knew advocacy was in my future since as far as I can remember. Growing up, I was heavily relied upon to satisfy disagreements or mediate situations that needed a resolution. It came naturally. Initially I wanted to be a mortician, however my high school sweetheart and college boyfriend indicated we would not get married if I perused my interest in mortuary science. I went into business administration and psychology and later landed a career in child welfare. It was a natural transition for me. Since then I have loved every minute of it. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? My biggest challenge was at the start of my career when I had to separate a child from a caretaker. I had to work hard to find a work/life balance since my field does not maintain traditional working hours.

H Natural Beauty Tips Cleaning Facial Tips and Beauty Tips
ere are some amazing cleaning and beauty tips* using household products. They are natural and better for both you and the environment.
Lemon
This is a deep-cleaning facial mask used by European women for hundreds of years. Combine 1 egg, Âź cup nonfat dry milk, 1 Tbsp. dark rum or brandy, and the juice of 1 lemon (3 Tbsp of lemon juice) in a blender. When the texture is creamy, pour into a bowl or jar. Gently apply mixture to your face. Let dry and peel off the mask. Thoroughly rinse your face with warm water. Pat dry. Apply your usual moisturizer.
Salt
To get rid of the puffy eyes that may accompany allergies, colds, crying, or lack of sleep, mix a tsp. of salt into 1 pint of hot water. Dip cotton balls into the solution, lie down and apply cotton to eyelids. Rest for 15 minutes, keeping eyes closed and cotton in place. The puffiness should be gone when you sit up. Mix 1 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil in a small bowl. Gently massage mixture into face and neck to cleanse and tone your skin. Follow by washing with your usual facial soap.
Olive Oil
Vegetable shortening makes an excellent moisturizing makeup remover. Wipe away makeup and follow by washing with your usual facial soup. Rinse well. Dab a bit of extra virgin olive oil or vegetable oil around your eyes at night to keep away crow’s feet.

Extra virgin olive oil makes an excellent facial moisturizer. Apply a few drops with a cotton ball. Do not rinse off.
Other Facial Tips
Spread mayonnaise over your face in a thin layer and let it dry for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then a splash of cold water. This treatment will exfoliate and moisturize your skin. To minimize facial pores, beat 1 egg and combine it with 1 Tbsp. of honey. Spread the mixture on your face. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse off. For an overnight blemish remedy, dab honey on the spot and cover with a bandage. You can also use a dab of white toothpaste to clear up pimples. If you have a painful pimple, try making a paste with water and crushed aspirin. Cover the blemish with the paste. Rinse after 5 minutes. You can repeat as often as you need. Want to make your eyebrows look sleek? Try applying a little lip balm to them before leaving the house. You can reapply throughout the day. Prevent dandruff by dabbing mouthwash on your scalp with a cotton ball. Leave on for 30 minutes. Shampoo after.
Kitchen
Your stainless-steel pans will stay shiny if you rub them with a dry, soft cloth and a little all-purpose flour. Buff with another clean cloth. Make a paste of corn starch and water and apply to tarnished silverware. Let dry then wipe clean with a dry cloth. Remove permanent marker from countertops and appliances with rubbing alcohol. Keep wooden cutting boards free of bacteria. Wash thoroughly in hot sudsy water and rinse thoroughly. Then mix 3 Tbsp. bleach with 1 gallon of warm water. Soak the solution onto the cutting board and keep moist for at least 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Make your oven self-cleaning. In a glass baking dish, mix 2 cups warm water and ¼ cup ammonia. Place it in the oven, shut the door and let it work overnight. The next morning, wipe the oven clean with a damp sponge. Remove water spots on stainless-steel appliances and fixtures using a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. To restore the shine, wipe them with a little olive oil on a soft cloth.
Cooking
Grind peppercorns or crush other whole spices by placing them in a zippered storage bag and smashing with a meat tenderizing hammer or a rolling pin. Keep your cookbook clean and open while you cook. Cover the pages with a piece of plastic wrap. Keep a couple of skirt hangers ready and use the double clips to hold each side of your cookbook open. You can then hang the cookbook off your cupboards so they are eye-level if they’re not too heavy.
Clothing
To remove scuff marks from shoes, rub them with egg white on a soft cloth. If your clothes were forgotten in the washing machine and smell sour or moldy, put them through the wash again. However, do not use detergent. Just add a tablespoon of ammonia. For tough stains on clothes, soak the items (colorfast only) in a bucket of water with ¼ cup regular bleach mixed in. Wait 10 minutes. Rinse in clean water. Then launder as usual. To remove chocolate stains from clothing, scrub the stained area with ammonia. Wash as usual. If you don’t have a sachet but want to freshen up your intimate and other clothing drawers, simply place some dried lavender, orange peel, or potpourri in a sealed plastic bag. Poke a few holes into the bag and place in the back of your drawer. *with special thanks to Betsy Rossen Elliot, author of a series of booklets, “Amazing Uses for Everyday Products” (Publications International)

credits ranging from news rooms to talk shows and cohosted several episodes of “BOTCHED POST OP” (E!), which is the after show to the reality television show, “BOTCHED” which follows her husband, Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif as they remedy extreme plastic surgeries that have gone wrong. For 4 years, Heather toured with a 14 piece Big Band as the lead singer opening for artists including Mel Torme, Manhattan Transfer and Dana Carvey. She also performed the “That’s Life” theme song, “Learnin’ As I Go,” used in the show’s second season. Heather is also conquering the Podcast World with her highly successful show, “Heather Dubrow’s World” on PodcastOne. It premiered at #3 on the iTunes Charts for North America. Heather and her husband, Terry, developed a skin care line over the last 15 years called Consult Beaute. It is sold on the Evine shopping channel, and is the fastest growing beauty brand on Evine. It is also sold on Amazon.com and is a revolutionary approach to anti-aging. While most anti-aging products only offer topical creams, Consult Beaute goes one step further with an innovative combination of time-fighting topical products and ingestible supplements to help support healthy skin, hair and nails. Heather tests each product herself and provides recommendations on how to make them even better. Having tried all of the formulas, she loves being able to present the line from a woman’s point of view. The Dubrow’s have written two books together, both of which are available on BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon. com. The first book is titled, “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig Present the Only Guide You’ll Ever Need to the Best Anti-Aging Treatments.” It outlines all the best techniques and treatments; from triedand-true to the newest treatments you have not heard of yet; from inexpensive drugstore creams to complicated surger-

ies; from simple to outrageous. They provide all the information and research needed to create your own unique anti-aging plan so you can look and feel your best. Their newest book, “The Dubrow Diet: Interval Eating to Lose Weight And Feel Ageless” was released in October 2018. In this book, the couple shares the diet and exercise plan they created to end their own decades-long yoyo dieting and flip on what they call the “ageless switch.” The central concept is called “interval eating,” a practice based on research showing that “when” you eat is perhaps the most important factor in weight loss and weight control. The book introduces you to a simple eating schedule that will give you power over your hormones that regulate your weight and the molecular factors that determine how you age. It will increase your energy and help you reach your goal weight. The diet is sustainable and even fun! Heather Dubrow is known for her glamorous East Coast style, talent and ability to talk to anyone. With her many achievements and high level of success, she truly represents a woman of empowerment.
You are involved with multiple ventures. How do you do it all? I think that every decade brings something so completely different for me. It’s kind of interesting, challenging, and kind of crazy. So I had a decade of being a full time actress/working person. I had kind of a decade of being a stay-at-home mom. I then reemerged back into television via “Real Housewives of Orange County.” I never thought I’d do a reality show! And then all of a sudden, you start playing the cards, you play the hand in front of you, and here we are: books, and podcasts, and product lines. I mean, it’s crazy. But it’s been really fun. Your goals and dreams start to shift. I don’t have the same desires I did when I was 25 or 35. You and your husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow, developed a line of skin care called Consult Beaute. How did this amazing beauty line begin? We’ve been doing skin care for about 20 years. One day we were on a hike together. He had already written this book called “The Acne Cure” and I said, ‘You know…’ and we started talking about his book and this and that and I came up with a product based on his book. We had an infomercial, and that’s how we started. It wasn’t called Consult Beaute at the time, but that’s pretty much how Consult Beaute started 20 years ago. We went through all these incarnations of different products and different ways of selling – through his office and via e-commerce and then technology caught up to what we were trying to do. Terry and the chemists had such a huge breakthrough with this which was the first major topical that we developed. It is called “Volumigine,” which is for volumizing your face without injections. Everything we do topically is to basically replace a plastic surgery procedure. Be-

cause Terry’s “The Botch Doctor,” he doesn’t want to do a lot of plastic surgery. It’s dangerous, even in the best of hands. We have things to volumize the face and things to resurface the face; all kinds of incredible topicals and we have been selling on the Evine Shopping Channel for the last 3 ½ years really successfully, and it makes us so happy. We also started another line called Consult Health which is supplements. We realized a couple of years ago that we could put lotions and potions on everyone, but if you’re not well, it doesn’t really matter. As Terry and I are getting older, we realized we needed more supplementation and so we wanted to just bring it to everyone. Of course, when we wanted to bring out our line, and with the success of “Botched,” health wise, we had offers from department stores and all these different places. But we didn’t want to do that. We didn’t want to charge a gazillion dollars at splashy stores. We just believed that everyone should be able to afford to have great skin and be healthy. You and your husband have written several books including “Dr & Mrs. Guinea Pig Present the Only Guide You’ll Ever Need to the Best Anti-Aging Treatments,” and your newest book just released, “The Dubrow Diet: Interval Eating to Lose Weight And Feel Ageless.” What are these books about? Terry and I call ourselves “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig” because we go out in the world and we test everything on ourselves. Even though it’s Consult Beaute, it’s not tested on animals – just me! I’m the only guinea pig. My skin is so sensitive that if it works for me, it will work for anyone. As far as our books go, we wrote the first one, which was really supposed to be a guide to debunk what’s out there, what’s snake oil, what works…and we really enjoy doing that. This new book, “The Dubrow Diet” is truly a labor of love for us. We’re so excited about this. Terry and I both have our own fitness journeys. He’s always been a yo-yo dieter. I got really heavy in college. It took a lot to get it off and different ways to get it off. But what’s been really incredible is when we started talking about the way we eat and the science behind it and what we were doing, we really developed this plan. It became more than a diet. It became a lifestyle. And I’ll tell you, this is the way I’ve been eating and working out for the last 5 years. The science part is incredible when you read the book. It’s not just based upon what you’re eating but when you’re eating. It also tightens your skin, and your hair grows. We want everyone to have that ageless body. Does this diet/lifestyle plan work for menopausal women who start gaining weight all of a sudden? Absolutely! I am turning 50 in January and Terry turned 60 in September. You’d never know that. We look and feel better than we ever have because of the way we eat and exercise. This is not just a diet. This is really something that’s just not attainable, it’s sustainable. When you eat properly and you feel good, it’s great for your hormones, your levels, everything else. I went from having some really weird perimenopause hot flashes and all that kind of stuff to feeling really balanced. Does this plan allow for cocktails? Everybody wants a drink. What do you drink? I drink, Sister. We actually cover this in the book, but I’ll tell you there are 3 sections to the book. The first section is the

quick start, which is how to get red carpet ready, where you cannot drink, but it’s only for a couple of days. The main part of the book, which is going to get you to your goal weight, and then your maintenance, includes drinks. But the question is what are you drinking, and how much you are drinking. Beer and lots of sweet, fruity drinks are not a good option. For me, I’ll drink Brut champagne, because it’s very dry, low sugar and only 14% alcohol volume, so you can drink a little more and not be impaired. One of the big things that we like is vodka soda. A vodka soda with a splash of something is such a good, dietetic drink. Or if you prefer, you could do gin, tequila with a splash of lime juice… a little salt, absolutely. Also, I think drinking is heart healthy. Not OVER drinking, and of course never ever drink and drive. I would never even take a sip of alcohol and get behind the wheel, but, it’s good for your heart, and it’s good if you have children, LOL! Now they are saying not just red wine, but actually any alcohol is good for your heart. In addition to everything we have discussed, now you are conquering the podcast arena with “Heather Dubrow’s World” on PodcastOne. What made you decide to venture into podcasting? A few years ago my agent said ‘You need to do a podcast,’ and I was like, huh?!? What? I’m so technologically backwards I literally went from my rotary phone to my iphone. He explained that podcasts need content, segments, guests, etc. I was having dinner with Dr. Drew Pinsky one night. He has been very successful in podcasting so we talked and I was telling him I was going to start this show. He said, “You know Heather, people just want to hang out with you for an hour. That’s really what the podcasting world is about.” I responded, “Oh! Really? Okay.” I have to be honest with you. I really did not believe him. I started my podcasts with my little segments and my guests and everything. But as I went on, and continued it, I really saw that he was probably right. I still have guests on from time to time if they make sense and if they’re someone that is actually in my world, which is even better. But basically, I just talk. And I feel like I’ve just built such an incredible community with my podcast. I love how interactive it is. I get messages from people all the time. We talk about everything including marriage, life, children, and what’s going on in the world. I try to stay away from gossipy things or reality TV. There are plenty of podcasts out there that really do such a great job with that. I just feel like we’re all hanging out together like girlfriends. It’s been really exciting. We just hit 30 million downloads. We get about 2 million downloads a month. And it’s building. So I’m just really grateful for everyone that’s been listening and who have been discovering the show and that’s been a part of it. How are you able to juggle this all with four children? What advice would you give women who are working full time and raising a family? It’s hard and I don’t think there is a perfect answer to that. I think even when we are doing it all perfectly, as parents, we never feel like we’re servicing everyone properly, especially ourselves. I will say this. I think the most important thing is to be present. I haven’t always been great at this, but I’ve gotten so much better as time goes on and as I’ve gotten older. We have to be present as much as possible, especially with the kids. You put the phone

away, plan for family dinners. It’s really easy to get complacent. You have to do it. I am such a planner, and I am very organized. Not everyone is, but in this respect, you have to be. When it comes to your family, you have to plan the family time. Especially as your children get to be teenagers- and you know what THAT’S like, because we were all teenagers once. The same applies in your relationships. You have to plan date night. You have to plan sex. You have to plan all those kinds of things. When you stop paying attention to those kinds of things in your relationship, that’s when it falls apart. What do you feel are the biggest challenges for women today? There’s so many. Each generation, each decade you’re in, the challenges are different. Whether you’re a stay a home mom, a working mom, trying to get into business, just out of college, just entering or exiting a relationship, there’s so much going on out there. The one thing I’m seeing now with women in their mid-30’s to mid-50’s in my community is that they’ve lost themselves. And this has been going on forever. I see it especially with women who have families. They wake up one day and say, “Oh wait a minute, what happened to ME? What happened to what I wanted to do? What am I going to do when the kids leave?” I don’t want to call it a mid-life crisis, but there is that moment when you wake up one day and you wonder, WHOA – how did I get here? And where am I going? What am I doing with the rest of my life, my last third? It’s interesting to watch people rediscover themselves. I think the best advice I can give people is not to get lost in the first place. Make sure you’re always doing something to feel creative. It doesn’t matter if it’s planning parties, dinner parties, working in a corporate job, whatever it is, you have to feel like you’re using your brain and you’re using your creativity in all those things. It doesn’t matter what age you are. I’m someone that’s never been hung up on a number. I always feel like if I’m in a good place in my life, then I’m happy. I feel like if I look good and I feel good and I’m healthy, that makes me happy. You do think about that. I would also say fake it till you make it. If you act happy, you are happy. It just follows.
Don’t look for someone else to make you happy. Happiness starts from within. Get off Instagram! Stop looking at everyone’s lives! It’s all B.S. anyway. They all have filters on there. They’re fighting with their husbands at the end of the day just like you do. Their kids are annoying sometimes too, you know what I mean? It’s like this. When I go out to an event sometimes and one of the kids acts up and now you’re in a bad mood- whether the kids are there or not, you go anyway. You go to an event and someone posts pictures and I look at them and I notice that no one had a good time! Why are you posting that? That is such nonsense! I won’t post. If it was a bad time, I don’t post. I’ll talk about it on my show but I won’t post this rosy picture, like, “Look how happy we are!” No. Name one outstanding quality that you think people should know about you or remember about you. That’s interesting. What’s funny is you know how some people are really interested in leaving a legacy? I think the only legacy that I need to leave – the one thing that’s super important to me- is to make sure that my 4 kids that I’ve created are really independent and healthy functioning humans. That’s really important to me. Beyond that, I don’t need to be remembered for anything else. As long as my day to day is happy, I feel very grateful. I’m in a really loving, not perfect, but perfect for us relationship. Perfect family - again, not absolutely perfect, but it works. Now for something fun for our fashionistas. Tell us about your closet. How many pocketbooks do your own? I love how you say pocketbook! It’s so New York. I honestly don’t know. My closet is like my little space where I hide. I love my closet. This is a funny story. Last night Terry’s mom was over and she’s so sweet. Dinner was over, I said goodbye and I came upstairs. I had like 10 minutes. I had a little drop of wine in my glass so I closed my closet doors so I could sit in there alone to relax and finish my wine. As I was drinking my wine, Terry invited his mom upstairs and I thought, OMG, are they going to come in? I locked the doors. I hid. What are your plans for the future? That’s a good question. Right now, with Terry we have our podcast “Dr. and Mrs. Guinea Pig” where we talk about health, wellness and beauty in our new book “The Dubrow Diet,” which was just released, so we’re going to be on a press tour for that. We go to Minnesota once a month with Consult Beaute because that’s where we broadcast out of when we sell our products. And of course “Heather Dubrow’s World” is now on twice a week on PodcastOne. Plus I have the 4 kids and I have some fun projects that I’m working on. But I’m not a pre-celebrator of things. So we’ll see what happens. I’m moving in directions that I’m finding interesting and fun and cool. Some of it is television stuff and some of it is not. I’m enjoying myself. And I’m trying to keep the balance of doing the things that I love that help me feel creative. Obviously the podcast and things like that I can do while my kids are at school because they are my priority. But there are a couple of other things that I’m working on that might take a little more of a time hit but I’m enjoying the process. heatherdubrow.com

Q I am starting a new business and need to create a brand. Can you suggest ways to do this? A Branding yourself is defined as developing a unique professional identity and coherent message that sets you apart from others either in your company or in your industry. To brand your new business, begin by researching your target audience and your competitors. This includes googling, checking relevant social media and talking to people in your target market. Next, you have to pick your focus and personality. Create a positioning statement that stakes your claim in the market. This is for your eyes only to help you answer the right questions about your brand. Imagine your brand as a person, and think of several adjectives that describe your brand that will connect with your audience. This will help with creating your voice on social media. Now, choose your business name which will affect your logo, Trademark registration, domain and marketing. You want a name that is hard to imitate and is different from others in your market. Now choose the colors and fonts for your business name and be mindful that certain colors bring about different emotions. Next, you need to write a slogan. A good slogan is short, catchy and a leaves a strong impression to put on your website, headline, business card, and social media. Now it is time to create your logo which should be unique and identifiable. Remember it is the face of your company and will be everywhere your brand exists. Your brand needs to remain consistent from the theme you choose for your website to the marketing you do to customer service to the way you package and ship your products. It will continue to evolve with your business. Now it is up to you to self-promote your new business through word of mouth, advertising, marketing, and other media. Please know that this information has come about through research and trial and error on my part while setting up my own brand. Q I am an over-achiever/doer. ning new projects, and the list goes on and on. I can’t seem to find a way to shut down and relax. Even when I am on vacation, I am constantly going. Meditation and yoga do not work for me. Do you have any suggestions of ways for me to disconnect and slow down, even for a little while? A I totally understand you as I am the same Type “A” personality as you. My brain never stops. I am always thinking of what needs to be done next or new projects to plan. One way I have found to shut my brain down is to physically move myself out of my home or office and into nature. I go to the beach, sit in a chair and stare at the waves, watch the seagulls flying and listen to the sounds around me. It may be for only a half an hour, but it helps me to push my type “A” thoughts to the back of my mind and lets my senses enjoy the beauty of my surroundings. For some people it could be a park, a lake, the woods or the mountains. It will enable you to feel disconnected and give your brain a rest. When you do return to your normal mode, you will feel refreshed. It may take a few visits before you learn how to unwind and keep your brain from wandering. But you will get there. Other things that I find helpful to destress is to enjoy the healing effects of a salt cave, get a massage, reflexology and/or facial. The pleasure of being pampered, the warm massage bed and the soft music playing enables me to shut down the “noise” in my brain and relax. If these services are not in your budget right now, consider a warm bath with scented oils, candlelight and a glass of wine. Hopefully this does the trick. Good luck.

How did you get started in your industry? I studied Journalism and Public Relations at Monmouth University. During school, I worked for a music marketing company and then after graduation, went to work for a full-service PR firm in NYC. I credit those two companies for really helping me get my start in the industry. What advice would you give to women looking to get started in your field? Do an internship. Don’t be afraid to work and pay your dues: roll up your sleeves and get ready to learn as much as you can! What challenges do you feel women today face? I believe one of biggest challenges women face in the workplace today is flexibility. Many women go on to be parents, while also trying to maintain and grow a career. I believe Corporate America makes that extremely difficult. It is for this reason that I started my own agency almost 13 years ago. I knew that one day I would have a family, and would require a schedule that would allow me work in this field. I can also be a mom that shows up when needed and is present. www.agcomgroup.com P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 43
Alexandria Rose Owner/Educator | Kidz Create Music
A
lexandria Rose started playing the piano at two and a half years old at the command of her mother, who insisted she and her sister learn to play. There were a lot of tears throughout the years every time they had to sit down to practice. However, the hard work paid off when she finally fell in love with the piano at the age of ten, when she was finally capable of learning the advanced 11-page version of “My Heart Will Go On” from her favorite movie “Titanic.” It was then that Alexandria realized her talent and began to enjoy it, expanding upon it as she provided accompaniment for worship band and theater at school. At fourteen years old, her mother told her it was time to get a job, so she began teaching piano from home. Once she got her driver’s license, she began driving to clients’ homes. She continued teaching in college since it was the best paying job for the least amount of time. Alexandria started her solo music school business in Orange County, but when she had the dream to transfer to USC she had to start from scratch again. Luckily, she got into U.S.C., graduating with a B.A. in Italian and a Minor in Theater in 2012. Near graduation, she was teaching close to 45 students per week. At this point she realized she needed help. So, in 2012 she hired her first teacher to start teaching with her around West Los Angeles, California.
44 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
In March of 2018, Alexandria taught her last class and handed over all of her current students to her teachers. She stepped into the managerial role 100% and has not looked back. Once again, piano gave her another step up in her career by aiding her in landing a managerial job at SUR restaurant. With some time on her hands, Alexandria found that her ultimate passion is acting. Now that she’s not teaching full time, she has begun to pursue that with more diligence. Managing at SUR has also given her opportunities to network, be around other actors, and be where the action is happening. She acknowledges that she owes a multitude of thanks to her parents (especially her mom) for pushing her to stick with the piano. Music is and always will be her life. She hopes that she can help make that a reality for others too. In her spare time, Alexandria enjoys a number of hobbies including: painting, hula hooping, running, hot yoga, snowboarding, scuba diving, paddle boarding, surfing, music festivals, movies, and cooking. She is a member of M.T.A.C. Did practicing music at a young age interfere with you spending time with friends or having a “normal” childhood? I would say that the only part of my childhood that was not normal was the amount of extracurricular activities I was a part of, piano included. I was required to practice 1 hour a day. Playing piano definitely enhanced my talent and allowed me to compete and always perform in anything talent related at my school. What advice would you give to children starting piano lessons or to parents interested in having their children begin piano lessons at a young age? I would say to them that it is possible to have fun in lessons and in learning music. However, true talent is formed through discipline. Therefore, giving your child piano lessons requires a responsibility on the parents part. When students face difficulties in their training and want to give up, that is when it’s the parent’s turn to push them and stand their ground. This kind of determination to not give up is what shapes a musician and also gives the child an invaluable life lesson. Is there an age that is too young to start learning to play an instrument? No! Just as there is no age too old to begin learning to play an instrument. By the time they are five they have a full understanding of how to read music. Similarly, my oldest student was 82 years old! Music truly transcends age. www.kidzcreatemusic.com

Jennifer is actively working on a webinar series and several eBooks on aromatherapy topics. She provides restorative aromatics to ground people, develops individual oils and customizes scents. Other services include stress mapping, stress redesign, and coaching. As well as educating her clients, Jennifer has continued her own education in the field. She completed the Foundations of Aromatherapy Level One Certification Program and the Essential Oils and Pregnancy Workshop at the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies in 2018. She attended the Aromatherapy Teacher Training Program at Aromahead Institute in 2018 and is currently working on her Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation at the School of Natural Skincare. Additionally, she is attending the French Aromatherapy Certification Program and the Aromatic Scholars Level Two Certification Program, both at The New York Institute of Aromatic Studies. Born on June 3, 1975, Jennifer first started using essential oils in 2011 and started to explore making her own skincare products in 2016. She then began her extensive studies to obtain certifications in her field and continues to learn. Jennifer is affiliated with the International Association of Women and the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy. How did you get started in your field/industry? I first started using essential oils in 2011 for health and wellness and started making my own skincare products in 2016. My passion increased over time and I began to explore using essential oils for my overall health and wellness. I was inspired to bring health and wellness into people’s lives through aromatherapy. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? Time management is a challenge because by day I work at a
university managing the Economics department’s website. Balancing life, work, and my studies often includes wearing many hats whilst juggling responsibilities. Who was your mentor? Who influenced you the most? My teachers through my aromatherapy certifications and education courses have been instrumental in my passion and business of aromatherapy. I have to thank Robert Tisserand, Jade Shutes, Andrea Butje, Amy Galper, Cathy Skipper, Joy Musacchio, and Cynthia Brownley, whose courses, webinars, and workshops have provided an invaluable experience to me as an aromatherapist. What is some advice that has helped you juggle your career and family life successfully? I work with my business coach Carlee Myers of Work You Love Now to help me focus on my projects and maintain a consistent work-life balance. Running your own business, no matter what it is takes a lot of time and you really need to learn how to prioritize everything from revenue generating projects to time to relax during your week. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Women today face many challenges, but also have many unique advantages especially in my industry. We are well-suited towards the nature of complementary alternative healing modalities. More and more people are seeking out alternatives for self-care and their overall health and wellness. What advice would you give to women starting out in your industry? My advice to anyone interested in essential oils and aromatherapy is to seek out getting certified as this will set you apart from those selling essential oils for multilevel marketing companies. Proper and safe use of essential oils is crucial in this industry. Name one outstanding quality that you think people should know about you or remember you by. In my field, I have an intuitive instinct for blending therapeutic aromatic blends to enhance the mind, body, and spirit. I can pick up a few essential oils and know instinctively how many drops of each I need and how they will complement and enhance each other providing a different array of benefits for the psyche and emotions. www.restorativearomatics.com

Melvina J. Newman Property Manager How did you get started in your field/ industry? After starting my career in the legal field and then owning my own retail business, I knew it was time for a change. A customer suggested I look into management of a homeowners association. He felt my background would be a benefit. What were some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? In many ways, people were the biggest challenge in my retail career. We had to market ourselves to our customers. This is still true in the homeowners group as there are many different opinions and marketing is still key. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Women today still face the same challenges with discrimination and equality in the work force. We are still
paid less for the same work, have limited opportunities for advancement, and are still facing sexual harassment in the work force. What advice would you give to women starting out in your industry? Believe in yourself and if you do that you will succeed. You must network with people, become involved in the community, be courageous, always do your very best and reach for the top. The outstanding qualities I wish to be remembered by would be my organizational skills and the ability to balance work along with community involvement. From there she went on to appear in several feature films as well as television. In 2012, Jon played a soccer mom hoping to score with Gerard Butler in “Playing for Keeps.” She also appeared in “Straight A’s” and Millennium Entertainment’s “Spiders 3D.” She is also a voice over artist who worked alongside Will Smith in “After Earth,” playing a psychiatrist. In 2015 Jon played a gun slinger named Reggie in “Blunt Force Trauma.” She played an entertainment reporter in SyFy’s creature comedy “Lavalantula” and sequel “2 Lava 2 Lantula!” In 2017, she played a telepathic government test experiment subject in “Mind Blown” and an ancient time traveling sorceress in “Pandora’s Box.” She will appear in the soon to be released “The Amityville Murders” and Lifetime TV Original “Saving My Baby.” Jon is also an accomplished musician, singer and music producer. Her band, Auradrone, has released 3 albums since 2009 and will be releasing a forthcoming EP in 2018. Auradrone has performed in festivals around the world including Exit Fest in Novi Sad, Serbia. Animal welfare and preserving endangered wildlife are other passions for Jon who created her foundation ‘Defending the Endangered’ in 2015 to raise awareness about poaching and trophy hunting. She starred

Actress, Musician, Animal Activist Auradrone in, co-directed, produced and edited a music video titled Auradrone: Weapon of Choice, which illustrates the devastation poaching and trophy hunting are causing the planet. The video was released in late 2016 and has been featured on several animal welfare sites and blogs. Jon is a self-taught audio engineer and music producer and has engineered 4 albums to date. She is also a proficient video editor and has edited several music videos including some for her own project Auradrone. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is keeping my focus and fortitude when things are challenging and keeping my creativity flowing. Nowadays actors, musicians and basically all artists need to be somewhat self-sufficient, so the difficulty is always how to keep the momentum going when it’s really up to you and no one else. I came from a small town, so I really had to start from the ground up and build everything I have myself without compromising who I really am. With everything you have accomplished within your profession, what do you consider to be your crowning glory? I think that each time I finish a project and see it through to the end that I would consider that a crowning glory. I am proud to have self released 3 albums, and am on the verge of releasing my fourth. I am also very pleased with the work we are doing with Defending the Endangered at this stage because it has grown from a tiny idea in 2015 to now where we are participating in our first international event this fall in Monaco. Everything I can do to help the wildlife on this planet is a victory, even if it is a step by step process. Just the fact that we raised money to help rhinos in South Africa last year felt like a victory because I am firm believer in being part of walking my talk and being part of a solution instead of sitting back and lamenting the state of the world.

Your activism and support for animal welfare and preserving endangered wildlife are well documented. What led you to create your foundation, Defending the Endangered? It started in 2015 after I had made an Auradrone video/PSA addressing an issue that I feel very strongly about which is poaching. I was talking to friends of mine about how we could use our creative abilities to raise more awareness about the issue. A lot of us are animal lovers who’ve been seeing the treatment of wildlife get worse each year as so many incredible species are being abused, exploited and sold off as trophies or snake oil medicines. I wanted to use my platform to bring others to this same cause so the movement came about from this. How did your musical group, Auradrone, come about? I have played in bands since I was 15 and had been writing music since then so when I moved to Los Angeles, I started playing in local bands for a period of time. I taught myself how to record and engineer my own music around 2004 and the concept of Auradrone was born in 2007. My vision for Auradrone has always been a collaborative effort more than a traditional band. You are very diverse in your activities. What advice would you give to young women interested in getting started in acting, music and activism? As clichÊ as it may sound, being true to yourself is the most important thing you can do when it comes to pursuing a true passion. As a woman, people are always putting labels on us. We work twice as hard to push past those and break preconceived notions. There’s even something to be said for learning from those who have not succeeded. Being as active as you are, how do you balance your professional and personal lives? I think that is a constant battle that most busy and creative people face. Sometimes the line between work and personal life can be blurred. I do try to take time out from the chaos to be silent and look after myself. That is something that busy people tend to forget. We need to recharge our batteries often or else everything gets drained, both personally and professionally. Meditation and yoga are examples of things I do to replenish myself as needed. www.officialjonmack.com

nn Hunter has been a professional photographer for almost 15 years. In addition to photography, she is a Digital Artist, Designer and Author. Her work covers a wide spectrum of disciplines, from portraits to landscapes, community and sporting events, real estate photography, grand openings, family reunions and more. She travels throughout the state as needed. Ensuring client satisfaction is extremely important to Ann. She gets to know her clients on a personal level and captures their uniqueness regardless of the project. So far, Ann has published two books, “Beyond the End of the Road” and “The Endless Journey,” utilizing her digital photography and writing short stories to go with the pictures. For more than 30 years, Heidi has supported a vast range of charities and organizations that benefit women and children. As a passionate advocate for education, Heidi established the Heidi Daus Scholarship in 2007 to fund educational opportunities for those in need. How did you get started in the jewelry business? I went to the Wood Tobe-Coburn School in New York City, which teaches the business aspects of the fashion world. I had to have a job in the summer, and wanted to be in the industry, so I got a part time job at Saks Fifth Avenue. My mother said, “You’re crazy! You live in New Jersey and you’re going to spend all of your money commuting.” So, I got on my bicycle and went down to a little dress shop in my lovely town of Upper Montclair where Mr. Al, the owner of the store, hired me on the spot. I worked there all summer. I helped them when they needed zippers and other special items. I was the one that ran into New York City and got the specific pieces needed. I found myself in the accessory area of New York City. I have to back up and say that I would take my paycheck from the dress shop and go deliver it at the jewelry shop down the street every Friday because I loved to

buy beautiful jewelry. Needless to say, when I came home with a necklace made out of wood that was about two hundred dollars, my mother thought I was crazy. I bought a few beads and went home and made things on my mother’s kitchen table. Then I went back to the store and sold them and bought more beads. One thing led to the next and then Mr. Al said, “You know what, Heidi, you’re fired! Get the hell out of here. It’s time for you to go do it on your own.” That was 35 years ago. You must have real talent and be very creative. You know that you must have a vision and you went for it. Did you know you were talented from a young age? I could see people’s eyes light up when they put a piece of my jewelry on. When I felt that, and saw that spark, it pushed me further and further along the road. And goodness knows there were plenty of very tough times because I started with nothing. I had no money, no know-how, no nothing. It just propelled me to see how this jewelry really makes people happy and it does. What were some of the other obstacles that you faced in in this career? It was bad when the market went up and down. In the 90s,
President & CEO of Heidi Daus Designer and HSN Guest Jewelry Designer jewelry was just lost. Accessories were simply forgotten. The entire industry settled down for a while. But I think that’s when I decided that you really can’t pay that much attention to what everybody says what fashion is. Beautiful things are beautiful things and women are women. A “Heidi Girl” loves anything that sparkles. They love everything that’s beautiful. It will be beautiful today, and ten years from now and 20 years from now. Is it true that you cold-called Saks Fifth Avenue? Yes indeed. I got my jewelry samples together and I marched up and down Madison Avenue and right into Saks Fifth Avenue. I said, “I think you should really carry this collection!” And they agreed. If there’s anything that my story can do to help other girls that are out there, I have to say, “You’ve got to try! You’ve got to believe. You’ve got to pound the pavement and not give up.” How do you continue to come up with such fresh and innovative designs? That’s really the easiest part for me out of all of this. It’s quite a big business now, and there are many different areas. For me, I can get inspiration just by looking out the window.
There is beautiful architecture, travel… That part is the easiest for me. What’s your favorite color and stone? I have to say aquamarine. I’ve never seen aquamarine look bad on anybody. Never. And what about a stone. I see you have a lot of pearls and a lot of Swarovski crystal. I would say my favorite are semi-precious stones, maybe carnelian, although I do love jade. I would say carnelian is my favorite stone. There’s something warm and wonderful about that color. It’s like a brownish red. You are known for a lot of charitable donations, and a lot of charitable work. Why do you particularly support the organization called Emiliana’s Hope Foundation? We try to help with any childhood cancer and research. I had a dear friend who worked for the company that took care of my website. When her perfectly healthy 13-year old daughter came home and said she had aching in her joints, she took her to the doctor. As it turns out, she had cancer and she has since passed. It’s just horrible to see what these families go through. When there are children in need, we try to do whatever we can to help. Where can we find your beautiful jewelry? Everyone can go to the Fifth Avenue location which is really Heididaus.com. You can find a list of locations on our website. It features all kinds of beautiful things that are exclusive to the brand and it will take you on a journey. I like to think when you enter the Heidi Daus universe that you will see our five major collections that take you to faraway places. They are the icon, floral, critter, Art Deco, and statement collections. Of course, there is also the ingenuity and very couture-like engineering that goes into the pieces that do multiple things. You get a really good idea about what we’re all about. They are found on HSN, also. I just celebrated 15 years on HSN and that was so much fun. HSN is an incredible place to shop. They have an amazing array of beautiful jewelry of all kinds. Anything else they could possibly dream up is right there on HSN.com. It’s a great place to shop for everything. Tell us about TSC. Is that in Canada? Yes. That’s “Today’s Shopping Choice,” which is the Canadian shopping channel. And let me tell you, those Canadian girls are just as fun as we Americans. They enjoy life and they love the sparkle. I’ve enjoyed being a part of that family up there as well. So how often do you have to travel to Canada? Every month we travel to Toronto. I’ve been there for a polar vortex or two, but it is fun. What advice would you give to women that are trying to start a business? When you go out on your own or when you start something for yourself, it’s just you and it’s kind of lonely. I think that it’s very important for a person to reach out and talk with others in the industry and make sure you have those lines of communication open. It can be daunting because you’re a Lone Ranger. You just have to keep your head down, keep questioning and never give up. heididaus.com
