Surfboard collections for children of the world
Corporate Social Responsibilities Australian Vanlines has a social responsibility in giving to many charities of the world. One of which we have founded and are a major partner in New South Wales (NSW) called the ‘Surf for Happiness (SfH)’ initiative, and its counterpart in Queensland (QLD) ‘Pngsurfing’. As of recent both entities have been combined and will be renamed to ‘The Wontok Surfing Foundation (WSF)’.
Surf for Happiness (SfH) is a not for profit organisation with a vision to help children and youths in disadvantaged coastal communities in developing countries and island-states. Through the sport of surfing, SfH aims to provide an outlet for youths to channel their time and energy into a positive, uplifting and happy experience away from drug abuse, alcoholism, violence and idleness.
Due to the positive impact of this project and our high interest in surfing communities, Australian Vanlines leapt at the chance to become members of the board, to supply their infrastructure and logistical services across Australia/internationally for free.
SfH collects new and used surf and rescue equipment, accessories and apparel donated by individuals, clubs, businesses, and sends them to the Surfing Association of the destination country. In turn, the Surfing Association is responsible for the distribution of surfboards and equipment to surf clubs nationwide, provides the necessary coaching, as well as water safety support.
Collections take part in both NSW and QLD, with further plans of expansion to other surfing states. SBS Video footage can be viewed here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE9t6O_yjYo
SfH is not just about collecting surfboards, it’s about showing how surfing can change a child’s life, steer them away from trouble and into the water where they can experience the elation of surfing, enjoy a better quality of life and strive to be a world champion one day. A quote from the president of the Surfing Association in Papua New Guinea sums up the essence of Surf for Happiness: “…through your kind help, we’ll see that every kid in the village communities (…) will each have a surfboard which will raise the profile of the sport and in turn give the families and kids an equal opportunity to not only surf but embrace the spirit of surfing and all the good things that come with the sport, which will in the long run keep our kids focused on better living, away from drugs and alcohol and in tune with protecting our fragile environment.” The new Wontok Surfing Foundation will follow closely along the same inspiration.
Corporate Green Policy Australian Vanlines recognise the importance of sound environmental management as a business and social responsibility. At all levels of our operation, we conduct activities with a view to protecting and conserving the natural environment. Yes, we do abide by legal requirements and are audited yearly by a third party to comply with our accreditations, but Australian Vanlines go beyond the ‘call of duty’ when the environment is concerned, and do so with the goodness and purity to change the world. Environmental examples include: Recycling Australian Vanlines manage the segregation of waste materials for all our offices hence minimizing landfill waste. The removalist carton, one of the largest used resource in the industry, is also saved and re-used wherever it can be. Reduction in Vehicle Emissions Australian Vanlines have reduced their road traffic over long distances, hence excess fuel burn, by utilising the national rail network for containerised transportation. With this in place, we are doing our part in helping the environment become one step closer in a cleaner and better future. Energy Efficiency All offices are equipped with energy saving lighting, and all lights/air conditioning are left off when personnel are not occupying each building. Introduction of Modern Vehicles Australian Vanlines are gradually acquiring new road and warehouse equipment that meet the latest Australian emissions standards. The purchase of electric forklifts is important, as they do not emit harmful gases to the environment as that of regular forklifts. Cleaner Oceans Australian Vanlines currently work closely with the Surf Lifesaving Clubs of Australia with Surfboard collections. We also aim to promote and help in the protection of our oceans and keeping the beaches/waterways clean.
The Earth is ours, let’s save it
Clothing/Other Collections Along with the Wontok Surfing Foundation, Australian Vanlines collect clothing, computers etc. from various individuals, charities and organisations helping in the donation process to children and families in developing nations around the world. Collections have also been donated to natural disaster areas such as the 2004 Tsunami and Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009. In most cases services are offered free of charge, unless sponsored by other nonprofit organisations.
