“Leadership requires two things: a vision of the world that does not yet exist and the ability to communicate it.” ~ Simon Sinek How do you communicate your vision? In business, one way is through your branding. It’s not just the logo you choose, it’s the message it translates to your audience. Does your brand reflect your business style? Hopefully mine says “professional, classic, yet relaxed.” This issue of NEinFocus provides two articles; one on branding, and another on potential rebranding. See how many points you can check off that you’re doing to make sure your branded image is on track with your goals. Who knows, maybe the rebranding suggestion will take you in a direction you hadn’t considered before.

BRANDING IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN JUST YOUR LOGO By: Trish Logan, Cr.Photog.

Most people hear the word branding and they think logos and business cards. They think “l’ll get those and I’ll be in business.” Right? WRONG! The truth is entrepreneurs often make critical mistakes in the beginning because they don’t think broadly enough. They don’t realize that a logo isn’t the same as a brand; it goes so much deeper than that. Your brand is who you are, it’s the face you show the world, and if done really well it will stand on its own without any other sales message, slogan or pitch. Think about this, as a parent of teenagers, I have given a lot of thought to why I have to drive over an hour from my home in rural Maine to a specialty store at the mall just for my kids to buy a brand they’ll actually wear. Heaven forbid I try to pass off a pair of sneakers or jeans from that nationally known discount retail store right in my town. It just won’t due. That may sound shallow but let’s relate that to your clients and what they desire. Where does your brand fall? Do you land within the one-stop department style store or are you more of 16

a specialty shop? Whatever you are, it’s fine. There are plenty of consumers for both models. You just have to market to the consumers that best fit your brand. Define your brand to attract the clients that fit your products and services. If done well, your clients will seek you out because they identify with you, your mission, or maybe just for your price point. It’s really up to you where you land. As a company, I am very aware of my branding. I have a logo that creates a feeling of elegance. It’s black and white with a simple elegant presentation.

My brand is further demonstrated in the way I project my style in my studio décor and packaging. The print products and sizes I display set a tone for my brand too. There are many other ways to define your brand. Here are a few. Over the years we have positioned ourselves as community leaders by participating in community service projects. Several years ago, I created the Trish Logan Legacy Project. It encompasses many causes within the community. It gives you an idea about the type of person I am. That, too, is part of a brand, a BIG part. The Legacy 17

logo mirrors my company logo but with heart. It’s a bit different but still recognizable as my brand. It helps show people that we are not just in business for us, we are also caring members of the community. We support veterans and high school seniors to prevent drinking and driving. Last year kicked off a “no texting and driving campaign. These causes mean a lot to me and to my clients as well. I use the PPA logo to solidify my brand and set myself apart from the competition. It shows me as professional

and

differentiates

me from my competition. It says I am an educator and mentor and positions me as an expert in the field. This also adds to my brand value and recognition. Remember: Branding is so much more than just a logo. If done well, it sets a tone for everything, from the client you attract to the pricing you charge. It delivers a message to your customers before you answer the phone or respond to an email. What 18

you put out there matters. Don’t fall into the trap that so many new businesses do; understand that carefully crafting your brand is one of the biggest factors in building your business and gaining the right clients. Creating a Demand for Your Brand is what it’s really all about. After all, if YOU are your brand, how could they resist getting to know you better and working with you?

Re-Branding Your Studio? Consider Adding Volume Headshots! By: Ken Wilson of American Color Imaging (ACI) If you’re reading this article, then you are probably searching for solutions on how to find more revenue streams to insure your studio remains successful. I can tell you without a doubt you’re not alone. Most wedding and portrait photographers today are struggling for business. A growing number of photographers have decided to broaden their studio’s portfolio of product offers by re-branding their business to include services that are complementary to their studio offerings. Here are a some services photographers 20

are adding into their studio Many studio photographers business model to remain who are also in the school/ undergrad market have told successful and even grow. me that they probably wouldn’t Volume Headshots? be in business if it wasn’t for Business headshots are their undergrad schools. In a great way for studios to spite of what you may think, supplement their income and the undergrad business is very bring in new clients; however, profitable and the barrier for studios are finding that this entry is still high enough that type of volume can be spotty you won’t have to deal with “new and unpredictable. At ACI, we inexperienced” photographers have been helping studios as competitors. transition from business to One of the major reasons volume headshots. What why photographers have are volume headshots? It’s shied away from volume headshots with data, more photography has been commonly known as school because of the bidding or undergrad photography. process they’ve gone through

Today, thanks to advances in software and online systems, most of the barriers professional photographers encountered in the past have either been eliminated or greatly simplified. ACI, for example, offers their clients free PhotoLynx ordering software to their volume photographers to help minimize their upfront expenses. These programs can vary, from PhotoLynx’s basic web based PLIC Match and the QR Code

to get the school’s contract. I am not going to mislead you by telling you that getting these contracts is easy, but I can guarantee one thing, if you don’t try, you will never get it. However, you may have more working for you than you think. As a local business you have a distinct advantage by being known in your community and having a reputation of quality and service to the people in your town/city. A lot of local photographers have “beaten the big guys” and won their local contacts. One photographer who’s done it is our very own Trish Logan (yes the current President of PPANE). Trish, in her former life, was a school secretary and was one of those “gate keepers” that decided who got to approach the principal at her school. Trish used this knowledge to acquired school contracts after she purchased a local portrait studio! If you’re interested in learning more about how Trish did it, check out her book “Unleashing Volume in Your Business” by clicking here. Another “barrier” that seems to prevent studios from entering the volume business is the schools data requirements. Matching images with data and being able to deliver school administration and yearbook discs sounds daunting to photographers unfamiliar with undergrad

photography. Also, the cost of the ordering software, organizing the flow of students, matching images to data and fulfilling reorders seems a bit too scary for many studio owners. 21

based Quixi software, to PhotoLynx’s robust Flow IM or Flow Dp2 software that offers sophisticated features and options to more experience high volume studios.

is online and at your figure tips. Also like our PhotoLynx ordering software, all of ACI’s volume e-commerce programs are free (no annual fees) and no commissions!

Perhaps the best part of ACI’s Volume Services is their specialized e-commerce websites: www.orderschoolpix.com, www.ordersportspix.com and www.orderdancepix.com. All three of their sites serve as e-commerce sites for online PrePay and Re-Orders and as an Online Customer Service Management Center for their studio’s volume orders. All your school projects can be managed online quickly and easily using the site’s Project Management Module so you don’t have to search for student images or sales records to fulfill a request: everything

Of course even great software needs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff to support and guide you through the entire process. From designing and printing your school flyers, to installing and guiding you in learning how to use your PhotoLynx Software, to making recommendations on how to handle your workflow on photo day at the school, ACI will be with you step by step. Their terrific customer service staff and technical sales representatives work as a team to assist and support photographers of all levels of experience to ensure they are successful.

Volume photography has been a consistent revenue generator for professional photographers for many years. Re-branding your studio to include this service can be the perfect solution for you.

The Allure of Travel A Chance Opportunity Becomes Life Changing Text and Images by Sarah McGarghan 27

I

n 2005 my mom asked me if I wanted to go to Peru with her and a group of college alumni. “Why would I want to go there? was my response. After all, I had hung out my professional photography shingle the year before and was doing quite well. After a few nudges, and a bit of financial bribery, I decided I would go, but I went with ambivalence and no expectations. That first time to Peru, I had the most incredible time and fell helplessly in love with Peru and her people: the spirituality of Machu Picchu, the rich culture of Cusco, and even floating down the Amazon with the pink dolphins was life changing for me. On that trip, I made 28

28

thousands of images. Of course I offered to share them with everyone on the trip, and only asked for a small amount of compensation so I could download them all onto CD’s. They were more than delighted, as I would frequently share what I had photographed with the group. Hence was the beginning of my sojourn into travel photography. But, back to that first time in Peru… Fernando, who happened to be our guide while in Cusco and Machu Picchu, was the most amazing guide, as well as person, that I have ever met. And as you may know, the guide is what makes the trip! He took us to the most unbelievable places, and shared his country, his family and much of himself with us all. I vowed to him that I would bring my family back, and within two years my family of six was having the time of their lives wandering the Peruvian landscape with Fernando! Over time, our families comingled… I hosted his family in Vermont, and he hosted my family in Cusco. During that time we decided to form a

travel company called Peru Haylli Tours in which I, with the help of Fernando, would help families and groups travel to Peru. I started planning trips for schools, couples, families and even other travel companies! Fortunately, to be a good tour operator, one has to go and visit the places that you are sending your clients to! I had the opportunity to meet more outstanding guides, and boy, did this give me the opportunity to photograph! Since that first trip to Peru I have traveled all over Peru, as well as to Ecuador and the Galapagos, Cuba, and Vietnam. I have met incredible guides, been to fabulous places and made some striking images! Thus began my love for travel photography. My trips are not the usual touristy-type trips. They are for the more adventurous traveler… what we call trips “off the beaten path!”…not difficult trips, but unusual trips. Going to places that you feel you are the first to discover. Places that have been untapped by the tourist market. Trips that delve into the country, people, customs, and trips that offer unique photo opportunities.

As my photography business is winding down, I am so happy to be able to continue with my travel photography. It thrills me to no end to be able to work with people, organizations, and most recently with other photographers in creating meaningful and exciting travel workshops all over the world! In March 2019 I have planned a 15 day trip with photographer Dan Burkholder to explore the beauty of Vietnam. Like all of my trips, it is a small intimate group of no more than 12 photographers. I invite you to look at the itinerary and join us during the trip. It will open your eyes to beautiful places, your heart to beautiful people, and your portfolio to beautiful images.

For more information on the March 2019 Vietnam trip, go to http://www.danburkholder.com/vietnam-workshop1.html If you’d like to discuss travel photography, or inquire about any other trips that Sarah is planning please contact her at sarah_peruhayllitour@gmavt.net.

“Longing Towards The Sea” This image was a testimony to patience and exploration. The photo Maker was made on my first trip to Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg, Scott Snyder, M.Photog. Maine. I arrived at the park in late afternoon after a long five hour Henniker, New Hampshire drive. The park was mostly empty and I wandered down the beach www.scottsnyder.photography without a camera for an hour or so to get a feel for the place. It was a bland, cloudless afternoon, and although the beach was Tools & Technique beautiful, the skies were not Camera & Lens: 5D Mark IV, Canon 16-35mm f/4 lens, Circular showing much potential. Polarizer Filter As sunset approached I knew I had to move my car Exposure: ISO 100, f/22, 1/13, =2 exposure compensation outside the park gates before shooting. I debated leaving without shooting and continuing north toward Acadia. I noticed sunset was close to low tide and decided to hang around for that. As I started the 30 minute walk back toward the point I could see the end-of-day light starting to work its magic. And, as the tide quickly receded over the shallow beach, the incredible pattern of water and sand appeared. I shot from the beginning to sunset through total darkness. It was an incredible evening for seascape photography. “Unclimbed” This image was captured in the fall of 2016 in the Hinku Valley region of Nepal on our way to Mera Peak. I believe this peak is Kyasar (aka Tangtse) whose summit is about 22,000 feet. If that’s correct, it actually has been climbed - just not by me - hence the deceptive image name. Studying the mountain speculating on the easiest summit route, I was taken by the seracs and the details in the fluting of the snow slopes. At higher elevations, the humidity and pollution are very low and with the sun off my left shoulder, the polarizing filter was effective making the sky a very dark blue.

“Alien Incubation”

“Alien Incubation” started with a photograph of a glass of Maker ice tea. The ice cubes in the glass had a vague similarity to Ella Carlson, M.Photog.M.Artist, CPP, EAlegs when I cut the glass in half and mirrored it. I then took ASP, C.Ph. a photograph of my husband’s size 14 feet and added them Dunstable, Massachusetts to the legs. It took a while to decide to use a clearer bottle Handpainting in Photoshop using for the area around the baby, but I settled on an olive oil the brush and mixer brush tools. bottle from my kitchen. I added some fish from a koi pond, hands from a statue to complete the baby. Then I put in bubbles and some steam for the final eerie effect.
