Living Our Cause. Strengthening Our Community. YMCA OF THE PIKES PEAK REGION JANUARY 2014

Dear Friends, A new year is upon us and the YMCA is grateful for the many opportunities we have to continue to serve our community. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region has been serving our community for more than 135 years. I believe our long-term success over the years is largely due to our ongoing commitment to maintaining our relevancy in addressing the changing needs of our community and yet never straying from our mission. One of the charges the YMCA has as a charitable, nonprofit organization is to ease the burdens on government. Some examples of this is our YMCA operating the City’s aquatic recreation facilities; our collaboration with the military post and bases in delivering YMCA Armed Services programs and events tailored specifically for military personnel and their families; and 21st Century Community Learning Centers for teens at our Southeast and Fountain locations. We are honored to be trusted with the delivery of these services

and value the on-going partnerships we have throughout the community. The YMCA is currently collaborating with more than 100 other nonprofit organizations and agencies to meet the needs of our community together. The health care industry is changing rapidly and it is more important than ever that we continue to focus on holistic wellness. The YMCA is playing an important role by partnering with Penrose-St. Francis to provide integrated programming at the Tri-Lakes Community Health Village that will open late fall 2014. When you combine the wellness programs we bring, along with the medical services from Penrose-St. Francis and the other tenants in the building, it will provide a full circle of care that includes preventive health, treatment, and follow-up care all from one central hub. With the help of a variety of health care providers and specialists, we have the opportunity to make wellness more understandable, accessible and effective to those we serve. I believe this concept will be replicable in our other operations in the Pikes Peak Region and throughout the country.

Many people do not realize the reach the YMCA has in our community. We have put together a map showing the many locations where the YMCA is providing services. These locations include our full service YMCA facilities, the City-owned recreation centers and outdoor pools that the YMCA is managing, as well as two additional recreation centers at Cordera and Meridian Ranch. You will also find the many school locations where the YMCA is providing licensed child care. Our reach extends all the way to Deckers, where you will find 150 acres of family fun at YMCA Camp Shady Brook. While we celebrate the successes we have witnessed in so many lives, we know there is so much more work we can do. We are grateful for your continued support of the Y and all that you do to help us meet the growing needs in our community. Wishing you many blessings in the year ahead,

Dan Dummermuth President/CEO

YMCA CONTINUES TO EXPAND SERVICES AND LOCATIONS

Y CHILD CARE SERVICES CONTINUE TO GROW Many people do not know that the YMCA provides Before and After School care in 12 locations across our community. The Y’s Before and After School Program is centered upon activities and opportunities that focus on eight core components. Core Components of YMCA Before & after Care 1. Literacy 6. Science, math and technology 2. Character development 7. Social competence and 3. Health, wellness and fitness conflict resolution 4. Service learning 8. Homework support 5. Arts and humanities Children absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe time well spent before and after school in a fun, safe and supportive environment is a primary building block for quality of life and future success of children. Children feel connected at the Y where they can make friends and learn how to be their best with the Y’s values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. We promote positive self-esteem, life

skills, teamwork, leadership, creativity and educational support. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region recognizes that exceptional, caring adults are essential to the healthy development of children which is why our staff exceed state licensing requirements for experience and training. We are excited to be expanding with new program sites in the very near future. As many families in our community have both parents working out of the home, quality child care is a necessity and the YMCA is proud to be filling that role. We will not turn a family away if they are not able to pay the full rate because we believe every child needs to be able to be in a positive environment surrounded by caring adults. We are able to provide financial assistance to these families thanks to the generosity of our donors.

Y MILITARY OUTREACH EXPANDING The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region is an official Armed Services YMCA. In the fourth quarter of 2013 we put together a Military Outreach Committee that will help the YMCA increase our reach across our community to provide programs and services specifically for the men, women and families of the Armed Services. We are currently partnering with Ft. Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, Air Force Academy, Schriever Air Force Base and many others to identify and respond to specific needs of our military families.

Mike Landers, President & CEO of the national Armed Services YMCA took time out of his busy schedule to visit the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region.

TRI-LAKES COMMUNITY HEALTH VILLAGE medical facility. The goal is to propel individuals, families and the community to a new level of health and well-being by providing seamless transitions and easy access to prevention, treatment and maintenance of a healthy life. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region is partnering with Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and The Boldt Company to create the Tri-Lakes Community Health Village, a central hub that will provide a full range of health and wellness services at the Tri-Lakes YMCA Family Center and an adjoining 50,000-sq-ft 2

We anticipate construction on the project to start in January 2014. The YMCA is excited to be a part of expanded wellness services for the Tri-Lakes Community and this collaborative project. Learn more by visiting trilakeshealth.com

LOCAL YOUTH HAVE A BLAST THIS SUMMER WITH THE Y

MEND PARTICIPANTS TACKLE THE BIG DOG BRAG

On Saturday, August 3, 2013, twenty MEND participants came out to tackle the 2K challenge at the Big Dog Brag family friendly, fun, mud run. With family and friends pushing, cheering and helping them along, the MEND team completed the course with bragging rights and a sense of accomplishment and motivation to tackle another fun run in the future. MEND is a YMCA grant funded program for youth, ages 7-13, who are above their healthy weight.

SUMMER SPORTS SKILLS CAMPS

700 YOUTH LET IT SHINE & EXPERIENCE MORE AT YMCA DAY CAMP YMCA Day Camp was offered at six locations across the Pikes Peak Region this past summer with opportunities to swim, explore and engage in a variety of activities. The Y kept 702 youth, ages 5-12, connected all summer long, while they were able to learn, grow and thrive.

TACO BELL FOUNDATION FOR TEENS GRANT INSPIRES 40 Y-MAD YOUTH TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE The Y-MAD (Youth Making A Difference) program gave teens the opportunity over the summer to volunteer with local businesses in our community. Activities included washing dogs at the Humane Society, marking sewer drains for Colorado Springs Utilities, shoveling mulch and planting a butterfly garden for the Southeast YMCA, learning about careers in aviation with High Hopes for Teens, and participating in youth leadership activities at the YMCA. Funding received from the

Taco Bell Foundation for Teens helped support the Y-MAD program for the summer of 2013.

CAMP SHADY BROOK HOSTS CAMP CORRAL

The YMCA Youth Sports staff engaged over 800 youth, ages 6-12, in summer sports clinics including basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer and volleyball. These week-long camps taught kids the fundamentals and skills of each sport while having fun, making new friends and building self-confidence.

The final week of camp at Camp Shady Brook during the summer of 2013 was home for Camp Corral. The YMCA and Camp Corral teamed up for the second year in a row to provide 200 children of our military heroes with a nonstop week of fun and excitement. This week was dedicated to the children of our brave soldiers who were injured or fallen while protecting our freedom. This was truly an amazing experience for both the YMCA and the campers who have already experienced so much in their young lives. This camp was funded by Golden Corral. In 2013, Camp Shady Brook celebrated 65 years of helping youth experience and learn about nature while making memories to last a lifetime.

YMCA BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE RECEIVES Y-USA PRECOR GRANT TO IMPLEMENT HEPA STANDARDS The YMCA received $3,000 to assist with implementing Healthy Eating & Physical Activity Standards (HEPA) in our Before and After School Program. These standards include offering fruits, vegetables and water at snack time, increasing the amount of exercise, and limiting video games and television for youngsters in our programs. “Improving and standardizing physical activity and healthy eating standards in our early childhood and after school programs will help improve our kids’ health and well-being,” said Estella Baca, Child Care Executive Director. “In addition to improving the standards for our kids, we’ll also work to educate parents on how to better expose kids to healthy messages and behaviors while at home.”
