CSHP TOGETHER CONFERENCE 2023

A REVIEW FROM THE PHARMACY STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE ~ Live from Banff

For those who may not know, the CSHP Together Conference is one of the largest pharmacy conferences in Canada, and is hosted annually in beautiful Banff (March 10-12, 2023). It’s a massive coordinated effort that brings together hospital pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other healthcare professionals from across the country. Held over three days, theconferenceprovidesaforumforlearning, networking, and sharing best practices in hospital pharmacy. In this article, we want to share our experience as students and first timeattendees, logistics like cost, and highlights from the weekend, to help students decide for themselves whether thismightbeworthwhileattendingnextyear!

If you missed this opportunity, Hospital Pharmacy Career Night, held on March 29th, 5:00-7:30 PM, is open to all CSHP student members and is an equally valuable networking opportunity, and will be held in Edmonton at Lister Hall.

BRIEF OVERVIEW

Many students checked-in on Friday afternoon, as the morning events schedule could be described as, "skippable", with nothing too memorable being presented. Saturday is an all-day affair, starting with a breakfast symposium at 7AM, with events going on all day until the Gala dinner—a semiformaleventfeaturingdinner, dancing, andeveningentertainmentintheform of a musical improv duo known as the “Dueling Piano Kings”. Sunday morning included a breakfast symposium and several more talks, before closing remarks and check-out at noon. It sounds brief, but it felt like a packed weekendthatwasasexhaustingasitwasexciting.

Conference Venue: the Kinnear Centre for Creativity & Innovation Walking in as a student and first-time attendee was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but that feeling quickly disappeared upon seeing familiar faces.

The Exhibit Hall is an opportunity for attendees to walk around and peruse a smattering of booths, occupied primarily by drug reps promoting their newest pharmaceutical product or innovation.

AttendingDr.WillFlanary’skeynotespeechwasmost definitely a highlight of the conference. Dr. Flanary is an Opthamologist by day and part-time comedian/social media celebrity by night, going by the stage name, "Dr. Glaucomflecken", where he creates medically-themed shorts on social media that have racked millions of views. But more than that, he is a husband, father, and two-time testicular cancer and cardiac arrest survivor. He spoke about his experience as a patient from a physician’s perspective, battling testicular cancer twice, his cardiacarrestatage30,andtheimpactonhisfamily, especially his wife, Kristin Flanary, who saved his life by maintaining CPR for 10 minutes until EMS arrived. In characteristic “Dr.Glaucomflecken” fashion though, he is always able to find humour in dark situations, and encourages others to embrace humor ineverydaylife.

Overall Impression:

Pawan offered the unique perspective as the only first year in attendance, and she thought the CSHP conference was a great opportunity to network with professionals and meet hospital pharmacists in order to learn from their experiences. Her advice to first years is, if you are interested in hospital pharmacy and would like to get to know more about the profession, attending theCSHPconferenceisagreatstartingpoint.Shefelttherewasa lotofflexibilityandfreedom, asyoucouldchoosewhichtalksyou wanted to attend or not. On that same note, you get out of it as much as you put in, and each individual’s experience is unique depending on how much you are willing to explore. But overall, she gave the thumbs up and would encourage more first years to reachoutsidetheircomfortzoneandcheckitoutnextyear!

Aside from being a fun weekend getaway in Banff, I learned a lot from this experience. I think being introduced to such a large professional development experience early on as a student was a good choice, because it introduces you to the world of continuing education, networking, and appreciating the evolving nature of science and best practices. For me it reinforced the importance of being proactive in staying up to date in order to provide the best clinical care for patients. It also showed me that professional development conferences are not as boring, dry, and didactic as I had thought, as I personally had a really fun time. It was also cool seeing some of the big names in our profession in-the-flesh, and of course, meeting the legendary Dr. Glaucomflecken was the cherry on top. If you are someone curious about hospital pharmacy and continuing education, I would highly recommend considering attending the CSHP Together Conference. If anything (at the veryleast),you’llhaveablastofaweekendinthemountains.

Eid Al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is one of two Eid celebrations that occur within the Islamic year. This

first Eid occurs after Ramadan, the annual month of fasting and worship for Muslims acrosstheglobe.

Eid is a celebration of the hard work and worship that Muslims have invested during the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a month where Muslims work to maximize their worship efforts towards God, primarily through observing a daily fast from sunrise to sunset, but also through giving continuous charity, showing kindness towards one another, and frequent prayer throughoutthedayandnight.

Eid begins with a congregational prayer early in the morning. It is recommended to have a shower, eat a light breakfast consisting of dates and water, and dress in one’s best clothes before heading to the prayer. It is also recommended to engage in remembrance of God through frequent recitation of praises towards God known as “takbeerat”. Eid prayers take place at multiple mosques and communitycentersacrossthecityandaremuchlargerthan regular congregational prayers, as everyone and their families, includingchildren, areencouragedtoattend.

After the prayer, families are encouraged to spend quality timetogether, sharemeals, andexchangegifts.Itiscommon inmanyculturestoreceivemoneyasagiftandissomething thatmanychildrenlookforwardto!

PHARMACY SCHOOL IN REVIEW CLASSOF2023

Photography by: Students of the Class of 2023 Yet somehow, there still hasn't been enough time and there's room for more memories. For now though, let's remember the time spent together and look back at the moments captured over the years, because four years might not be as long as we might've initially thought.

Four years is a long time! Thousands of hours were put into lectures, placements, and studying. All this, made a snafu by COVID. What made it all worth it in the end? The memories made along the way―A humble beginning with the White Coat Ceremony, mesmerizing performances at RxFactor, and wild nights at Blue and Gold were just some of the happenings that made the bustle of pharmacy school bearable.
