2012 ANNUAL REPORT
MASONIC CHARITIES of the R.W. Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Pennsylvania
Message from the
R.W. GRAND MASTER JAY W. SMITH
The journey of “Freemasonry, Master Builders - Building for Our Future” is taking our Masonic Charities to new heights, assisting and caring for more individuals, educating more youth and better serving our communities. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors who believe in our charities and selflessly provide the “tools” for us to build today and in the future. The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania, with its vast collection of art, books, antique furniture, jewels and valuable Masonic and American artifacts, is a precious source of knowledge and inspiration for Masons and the public at large. The Masonic Temple is a prominent symbol of Freemasonry’s impact in our communities and across our country, as well as a cultural and historical icon. The Masonic Villages are home to more than 2,700 residents across the state who have the opportunity to receive and provide services as part of our caring communities. Services include retirement living, personal care and nursing care, a cottage for adults with developmental disabilities and adult day care, as well as home care, hospice and inpatient and outpatient therapies. The Masonic Children’s Home enables up to 40 youth to experience stability, nourishment and love, in some cases, for the first time in their lives. It also provides them with basic life necessities and the chance for a successful future.
The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation gives youth resources and guidance and challenges them to reach their fullest potential. It also recognizes and encourages adults who have a meaningful impact on young people’s lives. The Masonic Charities Fund helps where and when it is needed – to selected Masonic or non-Masonic projects of a local, regional, national or global nature. This 2012 Annual Report details how generous donations enabled each charity to fulfill its mission in the name of Freemasonry. Learn about changes and growth within our charities and their impact on our communities. Read the stories of those who are personally grateful for our Masonic Charities, and of those who have given so others may receive the support and services they need. This report includes the names of Franklin Legacy Society members, individuals, lodges, Order of the Eastern Star chapters and other Masonic organizations who have given $100 or more. Also listed are the $100 and above honorarium and memorial gifts and bequests received by our Office of Gift Planning. In addition, we have included members of the Masonic Charities Loyalty Club. Please see the following page for more information about this convenient option. Your continued support is welcomed and needed. If you are interested in giving toward any of the charitable opportunities mentioned in this report, please complete and return the enclosed envelope. Should you decide to make a provision for one of the Masonic Charities through your estate plans, we invite you to join the Franklin Legacy Society, described on p. 35. Thank you for your commitment to and belief in our Masonic Charities. Your contributions continue to strengthen the Masonic fraternity, help and inspire more people and build better communities. Sincerely and Fraternally,
Jay W. Smith Right Worshipful Grand Master

The Masonic Charities Fund is general in its name, but very special in the way it provides help where and when it is needed. Not only does it epitomize the meaning of “charity,” but it also exemplifies in deeds a principal characteristic of the Masonic fraternity, the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God. A not-for-profit charitable organization, the Masonic Charities Fund was established in 1993 by the R.W. Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Pennsylvania. The fund solicits donations from Masonic lodges, members of the Masonic lodges, related entities of the Grand Lodge and the general public, and distributes these funds to charitable organizations, both Masonic and non-Masonic. Most recently, the Masonic Charities Fund has focused its support on the restoration
and preservation of the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia. The Masonic Temple stands as a monument of the strength, stability and energy of the Craft in Pennsylvania. Efforts to raise funds for this Masonic treasure are now a significant priority of the Masonic Charities Fund in order to ensure that future generations may benefit from the past accomplishments of Freemasonry.

THE MASONIC LIBRARY & MUSEUM OF PENNSYLVANIA
One North Broad Street • Philadelphia, PA 19107 • 215-988-1900 • www.pagrandlodge.org At the Masonic Temple cornerstone ceremony on June 24, 1868, R.W. Grand Master Richard Vaux (1865-1869) said, “In its hallowed enclosure, the light of Masonry will ever illumine those who seek virtue and knowledge.” Today, the staff of The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania (MLMP) take great pride in assisting members of the Masonic fraternity, as well as the general public. As part of the staff’s dedication, MLMP participates in cooperative and collaborative ventures with other cultural institutions and organizations throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. The Library, founded in 1817, is considered to have one of the finest collections for the study of Freemasonry. It holds 75,000 volumes, 30,000 documents and manuscripts, and a vast number of print and photographic works. The collection is available for public use. Scholars, including members of the fraternity, continue to conduct research by utilizing the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), a link which is accessible through the Grand Lodge
of Pennsylvania’s website. The Museum, founded in 1908, has more than 30,000 objects in its collection. The Library staff, as always, focus primarily on answering questions for patrons – Masonic line officers, Masons, staff, colleagues, and the general public. In 2012, assistant librarian Cathy Giaimo, senior research librarian Dr. Glenys Waldman (pictured at left) and Bro. Dennis Buttleman, curator, answered more than 500 reference questions, most of them genealogical. Staff catalogued 1,031 titles and circulated 197 titles from the Library. Several researchers visited the Library in 2012. A Columbia University graduate student spent a day studying Freemasonry in Cuba. An upholsterer and Winterthur Fellow researched George Bertault, a French upholsterer who lived in colonial Philadelphia. Jana Dambrogio, a conservationist and bookbinding specialist from the National Archives, also visited MLMP. She was primarily interested in “tickets” – a bookbinder’s combination signature and advertisement which was usually glued onto the inside front cover –

She and Dr. Waldman also discussed Sebastian Münster’s “Cosmographia,” a geography book published in Basel, Switzerland in 1592. In addition, Ms. Giaimo assisted the following (among others) via email: Luis Otero, G.S., Grand Lodge of Puerto Rico, continued his 2011 research on lodges that were warranted by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and their members. Jonathan Underwood, of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina’s 225th Anniversary Committee, requested any information we might have on Military Lodge No. 19 and Lodge No. 20. In July, Dr. Waldman attended the annual meeting of the Association of Masonic Museums, Libraries and Archives – Europe, in Rome, as part of a vacation. Later in the month, she assisted with a special tour of MLMP for members of The Masonic Society. In October, Ms. Giaimo attended the annual Masonic Library and Museum Association meeting in Stillwater, Minn., and Bro. Buttleman attended the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums annual meeting held in Tarrytown, N.Y. MLMP is proud to have loaned a painting of Bro. PENNSYLVANIA MASONIC YOUTH FOUNDATION 1244 Bainbridge Road • Elizabethtown, PA 17022 • 717-367-1536 • www.pmyf.org
The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation (PMYF) is the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania’s program to support young people across the Commonwealth in areas of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual development. It is focused on Masonic youth, education, values, safety and providing quality adult leadership. The programs of our Masonic youth groups — Rainbow, DeMolay and Job’s Daughters — are founded on Masonic principles and require our support for their success. Adult leadership is the key to successful youth programs. In 2012, we covered the cost of 75 comprehensive criminal background checks at a cost of more than $3,200 to assure new volunteers for our Masonic youth groups met our highest service standards. All adult leaders, regardless of fraternal rank or experience, are required to attend training and be subject to random background checks to ensure a safe environment for our youth’s growth and development. Our anti-bullying seminars are having a profound effect on hundreds of teachers and administrators each year. Indirectly, this work affects thousands of students. In 2012, 1,252 teachers and administrators participated in 22 programs conducted by our long-time partner, Deborah McCoy, an industry leader in anti-bullying education. Our HODEGOS Award program annually recognizes the top two adult leaders in Rainbow, DeMolay and Job’s Daughters. Hodegos, a Greek word meaning “leader, guide and instructor of the inexperienced,” is a fitting appellation for the dedicated adults who earn this distinction by virtue of a confidential nomination, letters of recommendation from youth and adults and unanimous approval by the PMYF Board of Directors. Since 2006, only 60 adults have been recognized and esteemed by the Grand Lodge to be of the finest character and examples of service to all. We support Scout leaders through the administration of the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award to recognize Masons who give their service to the Scouting movement. This national program, administered by PMYF, honored 27 Pennsylvania Scout leaders in 2012 and 606 Pennsylvania Masons since 2001. Hosting youth at the Masonic Conference Center Patton Campus for educational activities has been, and continues to be, our primary support program for our Masonic youth groups. In 2012, we hosted 2,572 young 6
people and their adult leaders at 28 events. We provided food, lodging and support services for their programs, which teach Masonic values to teenagers. In the last 23 years, PMYF has provided hundreds of scholarships for children and grandchildren of Pennsylvania Master Masons, totaling more than $780,000. In 2012, PMYF awarded 50 scholarships totaling $57,800 for deserving and needy students. A generous gift from the estate of Bro. A. Ralph Taylor in excess of $251,000 was received in 2012, and has been designated to the Educational Endowment Fund to generate additional scholarships for future years. The Child Identification Program (CHIP) continues to provide parents with an identification kit to use should their children ever go missing. More than 80 events held in 21 different Masonic districts reached 3,389 children. PMYF provides the identification kits to lodges and loans equipment when needed to help Freemasonry reach out in service to the community. Teaching respect, responsibility & relationships, the LifeSkills and LifeChangers conferences offer opportunities for students and teachers to share in a supportive and nurturing environment. This program is unlike any other Masonic youth “camps” conducted across the country, and changes lives for the better each year. In 2012, 25 highly qualified staff members served 76 LifeSkills attendees, nine LifeChangers participants and eight Counselors-InTraining in this week-long program. Masons are good at teaching young people the Masonic principles of love of humanity, selfless charity and the search for truth. We do it through our programs; we do it through our lodges; we do it through our own examples, by living these principles in our daily lives.
Mission Statement The Mission of the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation is to lead the Masonic fraternity in providing services on behalf of young people, and training for adults who work for the betterment of youth. To accomplish this Mission, the Foundation will enhance the programs of the Masonic Youth Groups; support initiatives to keep children safe from violence, abuse and exploitation; and provide specialized education for adults who offer leadership to youth in the Commonwealth.

Bro. Richard Fitzsimmons, Perry-Keystone Lodge No. 392, Erie, watched his sons, Arthur and Andrew, develop into well-rounded young men through their years in DeMolay. “They learned organizational skills, public speaking abilities and a lot about planning events,” he said. “They gained new friends who they still have today.” Both his sons went on to join Freemasonry, the Scottish Rite and the Shriners. The third generation of his family is now experiencing the same growth, as his two grandsons take part in DeMolay. His youngest grandson, Cameron, serves as Junior Councilor of the Erie Chapter. His older grandson, Nicholas, has especially enjoyed participating in the Pennsylvania DeMolay Basketball Tournament (which the Erie Chapter has won the past five years!). For Bro. Fitzsimmons, one of the highlights of serving as a DeMolay advisor is the time spent traveling to different chapters and athletic tournaments. Given Erie’s location in the northwestern corner of the state, road trips turn into six-hour adventures. “We turn up the radio or I just sit and listen to the guys’ conversations and laughter,” he said. “There is always an air of excitement and adrenaline when we’re going to sporting events. And if you win, there’s the excitement of celebrating the championship!” He also likes to participate in CHIP events with DeMolay members, and since he’s been involved with the organization for more than 30 years, “I often meet the children of former DeMolay,” he said. Since the time his sons belonged to DeMolay, society has changed, like the increased focus on technology, for example, but Bro. Fitzsimmons believes the core values of the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation (PMYF) remain steadfast.
“The main thing is the betterment of our youth,” he said of the importance of PMYF’s youth groups. “It provides opportunities for young adults to meet new people and grow. It gives them a safe environment and strong leaders.” Bro. Fitzsimmons is an Active Member of DeMolay International, one of approximately 200 worldwide, and serves as Deputy Executive Officer and Director of the Western Legion of Honor. He served as District Deputy Grand Master of District No. 24 from Dec. 27, 2005 through Dec. 27, 2012. He retired from General Electric Company in 2002 and enjoys spending time at his camp in McKean County. Bro. Fitzsimmons looks forward to spending more time with family and becoming even more involved in DeMolay activities with his additional free time. With the DeMolay Convention slated for Erie in July, the chapter is gearing up to welcome everyone to their corner of the state.

MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
One Masonic Drive • Elizabethtown, PA 17022 • 717-367-1121, ext. 33301 • www.masonicvillages.org In 2012, 11 youth moved to the Masonic Children’s Home, which served a total of 51 kids throughout the year. At one time, up to 40 youth – whose home or socioeconomic environments do not provide for their healthy growth and development – live in five cottages. Staff create a supportive, homelike environment filled with guidance and love. Generous contributions fund the Masonic Children’s Home. No charges are made to individuals, organizations, or any units of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or federal government for services. In 2012, donors provided everything from financial gifts to presents for the children; tickets to parks and games; wish list items; and many other opportunities for growth. One Masonic Village resident even took her crafting skills to Balliet Cottage where she helped the girls make jewelry. The 340 members of Jerusalem Lodge No. 506, Philadelphia, with the help of Lancaster Bike Shop and a tractor trailer from All State Career School, donated a bicycle and helmet for each child. The on-campus sports equipment, playgrounds, educational resource center and pools provided opportunities to stay active. Altogether, the children played more than nine different sports and took lessons for music, dance, art, self-defense and driving. Youth may participate in the religious worship of their choice, and several children attended church camps and youth groups. Two young men helped their youth group host a cookout at the Masonic Children’s Home. To build life skills, the children’s home facilitated programs such as the Cottage Cook-Offs, where each cottage prepared a meal together; Splash Bash, movie nights and a campfire, which the Entertainment Committee planned; and alumni events. Several youth took an
8
interest in performing, with four girls playing in piano recitals, brothers dancing at the Elizabethtown Fair and two youth acting in plays. Several teens received scholarships to attend educational and leadership camps in the summer to develop their natural skills and interests. One served as an intern for the chief of staff for Sen. Elder Vogel, Jr. Youth contributed to the community by holding jobs through nine local businesses and organizations; painting faces at Autumn Day; volunteering; and throwing a birthday party for a resident of Masonic Village. The youngest girl was honored as a “student with a purpose” at school. A basketball player spoke at an event to help raise money to improve the Elizabethtown Area School District’s athletic facilities. Youth attend the Elizabethtown Area School District, programs conducted by Intermediate Unit 13 and the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. In 2012, an average of 19 children made the honor rolls each semester. The Masonic Children’s Home also supported 10 young adults in higher education. As 2013 neared, the Masonic Children’s Home geared up to celebrate its 100th anniversary. On June 1, the Masonic Children’s Home kicked off a Centennial Capital Campaign for its 2013 anniversary. At the close of 2012, $1,472,443 of the $10 million goal was reached. A new Masonic Children’s Home Centennial Society was established to recognize Masonic Children’s Home planned gift donors. We will display their names in a beautiful new Centennial Garden beside the Donor Recognition Garden.
Conrad is preparing for his senior year of high school next September and all the changes and decisions this pivotal year entails. He’ll embark on the next chapter in life’s journey, crossing new challenges and facing increased responsibilities. Conrad is ready for what the future holds. He credits hard work and maturity for his positive attitude, and in part, the six years he has spent living at the Masonic Children’s Home. “It was different walking into an environment I wasn’t used to, meeting all the kids and houseparents, and learning about the rules, chores and what everyone was expecting me to do,” he said of his first few days at the children’s home in 2006. Conrad quickly embraced the changes. He talked with current residents and adults who used to live at the children’s home. He learned things from different houseparents and adjusted to his new surroundings. Fast forward six years and he is one of the first residents to welcome new youth to the children’s home. “I’ve grown as a person, and I’m more outgoing,” he said. “I enjoy meeting everyone who comes through [the children’s home]. I try to help kids and teach them what’s wrong and right. I tell them my story and that it’s tough at first, but it gets easier as you go on.” Conrad has found a good balance between school, work and extracurricular activities. He enjoys playing basketball, running track, fishing, hunting and wrestling. When he’s not busy playing sports, he likes to watch NASCAR, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies on television and hang out with friends. His favorite trips with the Masonic Children’s Home over the last six years include camping; visiting the beach, Delaware River and Dorney Park; and attending baseball games. He works part-time at the GIANT food store in Hershey and volunteers to help with games through the Adopt-a-Grandparent program in the Masonic Health Care Center. “I get things done,” he said of his work ethic. “I’m helpful and do what I’m asked. I receive help and encouragement to do what I want.” Conrad’s family has a history of military service, so once he graduates high school, he plans to enlist and work as a mechanic. It costs $105.04 a day to “I feel prepared for life after high school,” he said, thanks to the houseparents, tutors and other staff at the Masonic Children’s Home. “They support us and try to provide housing, food, make this environment safe. They are caring and want to help us out. I enjoy it here. clothing, around-theIt’s peaceful, and there is always somewhere to go if I need to talk.” clock supervision and With the lessons and memories of the Masonic Children’s Home instilled in him, educational tutors for Conrad is confident and ready to lead others. MASONIC VILLAGES Through the continued generosity of donors, the unwearied dedication of staff, the selfless devotion of volunteers and the foresight of leadership, Masonic Villages delivers high quality care and services across the state. In 2012, Masonic Villages’ residents and employees participated in several key advocacy events, explaining to our state and federal legislators how our ability to provide services across the state is impacted by current and future laws. When Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast on Oct. 29, staff at each location was ready to implement an Emergency Action Plan. Our Dallas, Lafayette Hill and Warminster locations temporarily lost power. Some staff worked extra shifts to ensure there was no interruption in care or services. In an ever-increasing digital world, Masonic Villages implemented a new nurse call system in Elizabethtown and Sewickley that allows staff to communicate directly with residents. A new state-of-the-art system in Elizabethtown helps Rehabilitation Services improve efficiency by documenting services online at the point of care. The Masonic Villages launched two new websites – www.MasonicCharitiesPa.org and www.MasonicVillages.org – to update previous sites, provide more interaction, strengthen our communication efforts and increase search engine optimization.
The Department of Public Welfare’s rate change resulted in a reduction of $3.5 million in reimbursement – a 15 percent hit on our Medicaid revenue. The generous support of donors helps to close this gap and makes it possible to provide care and services for more than 2,700 residents, regardless of their ability to pay. In 2012, through the charity of Pennsylvania Freemasons, their families and others who have contributed to its mission, Masonic Villages provided charity care worth approximately $27.3 million across the state. At the close of the Masonic Village’s $25 million Centennial Capital Campaign on May 31, $29,939,473 was raised! Staff coordinated the transition of Masonic Homes (an unincorporated association) to a corporation named Masonic Villages of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania as of Jan. 1, 2013. With the retirement of several key leaders and the need for future growth, we hired Jennifer Schwalm, chief mission development officer; Maureen Reisinger, executive director in Warminster; Kelly Weaver, assistant executive director in Lafayette Hill; Karen Schneider, director of human resources in Sewickley; and David Whitenack, director of gift planning – central Pennsylvania region. In the following pages, read about each Masonic Villages location and how your contributions impact our Mission of Love.
Mission of Love Our caring communities and services assist individuals, families and children in realizing their potential and enjoying the highest possible quality of life through the traditions of Freemasonry. Our Vision is to be a Center of Excellence. Our Mission of Love Values: Quality of Life • Respect for the Individual Quality Service • Outreach
2012 Board of Directors Masonic Villages also extends its Mission of Love through community benefits which are provided above and beyond day-to-day services. Throughout 2012, more than $880,000 was given back to our local communities through subsidized child care services, scholarships for high school seniors who volunteer at Masonic Villages, and opening our facilities to local residents and organizations to use free of charge. The highlights and stories of Masonic Villages’ community benefits can be found in a Report to the Community produced for each of our Dallas, Elizabethtown, Lafayette Hill and Sewickley locations, which are available online at www.masonicvillages.org. 10

When Elsie moved to the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown more than six years ago, she was recovering from an operation and doesn’t remember much about her arrival. Her most vivid memory is Elaine Siegrist, nursing assistant, encouraging her to continue her rehabilitation. “She kept finding glimpses of who I would become,” Elsie said. “I consider her a member of my family. She has been with me ever since I moved in. She understands the things I like and arranges them for me. I’m impressed with all the staff here. My children are impressed with their friendliness.” One of Elsie’s sons, who lives in Maine, showed his appreciation by sending staff a lobster-shaped chocolate bar. Her family includes seven children, 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A former reading aide, Elsie spends much of her time reading non-fiction books spanning topics of politics and religion, browsing The New York Times and Time magazine, and having discussions with family and staff. Tamerly Bell, recreation therapist, stops by to talk with Elsie about everything from the weather to the latest election. “She does a great job of finding something of interest for every person,” Elsie said. Elsie belongs to her neighborhood’s resident council. She meets a few times a year with staff and other residents to discuss what is going well and any concerns that may arise. Since renovations to her neighborhood, Benjamin Franklin 3, were completed, Elsie has been very happy with her home. “They’ve done a great job,” she said. “[Construction workers] were very attune to our needs. I don’t see how they could’ve done any better.” “I like that we can order whatever we want in the dining room,” Elsie added. Her favorite dish is an apple dumpling with vanilla ice cream. Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, she wasn’t familiar with this baked treat, but now, when it’s on the menu, she skips right to dessert! Elsie’s husband, Bro. William Corlett, Lowther Manor Lodge No. 781, Camp Hill, who passed away in 2007, volunteered as an admissions counselor with Masonic Village (then Masonic Homes) to help potential residents with the application process. They were both familiar with Masonic Village at Elizabethtown and always knew it was where they wanted to retire. “I think they treat us all like individuals,” Elsie said of staff at Masonic Village. “They offer a variety of opportunities and make things like taking trips with my family possible. I’m so glad there is a Masonic Village.” Fortunately for individuals across the state, there are five Masonic Village locations providing personalized, loving care.

MASONIC VILLAGES
A Glimpse of Elsie
The operating expenses of the Masonic Villages have historically exceeded operating revenues. Through the generosity of Freemasons and friends of the fraternity, contributions and bequests enable the Masonic Villages to cover this deficit. The bequests which have been generously donated to the Masonic Villages have been invested, and the investment income earned on these funds allows Masonic Villages to continue its “Mission of Love” and caring for those in need. Any excess funds will be invested so Masonic Villages can continue to provide charitable services to our residents and the community in the future.
Care for Those Who Need It Most Fraternal care helps provide nursing, personal care and children’s services for residents whose savings, insurance or public assistance does not fully cover the cost of their care. Unreimbursed Medicare and Medicaid costs totaled more than $7 million in 2012. Fraternal care covers this expense, as well as day-to-day services such as dental care and dentures, hearing aids, pastoral counseling, social services, occupational
and speech therapy, and television and telephone services. Masonic Villages provided $9.65 million in fraternal care in 2012. As of Dec. 31, 2012, 51.3 percent of personal care residents received fraternal care. Fifty-six percent of nursing care residents receive Medicaid and 9 percent receive Medicare/Medicare Advantage. 11
MASONIC VILLAGE AT ELIZABETHTOWN
One Masonic Drive • Elizabethtown, PA 17022 • 717-367-1121 • www.masonicvillages.org/elizabethtown Improvements and changes at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown in 2012 included: Masonic Village was recertified as an Eden Alternative® facility for its 13th year. The Eden Alternative® philosophy promotes spontaneity, among other qualities, to create a caring culture. 2012 marked the third year of renovations to the Masonic Health Care Center to convert the current traditional hospital model into discrete neighborhoods with a more intimate atmosphere. The renovations to the Ben Franklin neighborhood are done, and work on the Washington neighborhood is approximately 55 percent complete. A new pharmacy packaging system significantly reduces the amount of time nursing staff need to pass medications in the nursing and personal areas, prevents medication errors and allows residents to age in place longer. Food Services implemented several changes in 2012. The Grand Lodge Hall Dining Room has a new layout featuring four buffet stations with a variety of choices. By year-end, seven of the 10 health care neighborhoods implemented country kitchens which provide residents with more flexibility in food choice and dining times and a hosting program featuring staff from across campus to serve residents. The Masonic Health Care Center cafeteria was renovated and renamed The Village Café. Nutrition labels help people make healthy choices. The Clubhouse Dining Room was renovated and reopened on Nov. 11 with an updated interior, Grand Buffet Room and added options during meal times. The Courtyard Café also received an aesthetic makeover. In retirement living, the Garfield-Harding-Polk Cottage Project continued, and 60 cottages were completed by Dec. 31, with the potential for 40 additional homes. A renovation project began in the Retirement Living Clubhouse and James Buchanan Apartments to completely update the activity room, Clubhouse Market and overall common areas. Renovations are to be finished in April 2013. The Rooster’s Corner Woodworking Shop also received a 1,364 sq. ft. addition.
Masonic Village’s commitment to high quality care and conservation earned several recognitions in 2012: The Masonic Village Farm was recognized as the winner of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Environmental Stewardship Award Program for its conservation practices and efforts to protect resources while operating a viable beef cattle and farm enterprise. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary George Greig toured the farm and presented a proclamation signed by Gov. Tom Corbett declaring March 4-10 “Agriculture Week” in Pennsylvania. The Therapeutic Recreation Department received the Outstanding Programming Award for its resident-inspired “Lancaster Amish Tour.” Masonic Village’s wellness efforts received recognition by Lighten Up Lancaster County’s Well Workplace Award program and in an International Council on Active Aging publication for the Active Aging Week program. Masonic Village was named to the E-power® Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll for energyefficient business practices, which include installing electricity-saving fixtures, motion detector-controlled lights and six low-emission, energy-efficient turbines. Masonic Village offered services the community could utilize while living at home: Masonic Village Home Care provided 30,346 hours of services, a 5 percent increase from 2011. Masonic Village Hospice expanded its program to the community and served 217 patients with a 95 percent satisfaction rate. The hospice program received gifts totaling $17,150. Short-term rehabilitation reached its goal of serving 19 people at a time, totaling 6 percent of the occupancy for health care services. On average, 23 caregivers attended the monthly Caregiver Support and Education Group. Collectively, more than 625 community members and residents volunteered 51,000 hours throughout the campus. Masonic Village at Elizabethtown was home to 1,820 residents as of Dec. 31, 2012.
Cohesive Care Leads to Fewer Hospital Readmissions Increasingly, the frequency of rehospitalization (within 30 days of hospital discharge) is a quality measure by which skilled nursing facilities and hospital systems are judged. Masonic Villages is consistently well below national benchmarks for hospital admissions and readmissions. In a 30-day period, the national average rehospitalization rate for skilled nursing facilities is 20 percent. Masonic Villages averaged 4.56 percent in 2012. Avoiding hospital admissions and readmissions, when possible, leads to a healthier and better quality of life for residents. 12
Rehospitalization can result in: • Increased frequency of drug-resistant infections. • Greater medical errors during transition to and from hospital. • Greater functional declines. There are many people behind this low rate of rehospitalization: Masonic Villages’ support staff, nursing staff, pharmacy staff, administrative staff, doctors and nurse practitioners. Our low turnover rate for staff (14.4 percent in 2012) is another contributing factor. The support of our Mission of Love is the foundation for staff members’ success.
36 Ridgway Drive • Dallas, PA 18612 • 570-675-1866 • www.masonicvillages.org/dallas Masonic Village at Dallas was home to 108 residents as of Dec. 31, 2012. The Walther Apartments were 98 percent reserved, with a growing waiting list for prospective residents. Twenty-two villas were reserved. For a second year, residents joined forces with Trinity Presbyterian Church to help youth in the community through the Back Pack Program, which gives children a backpack full of food to take home for the weekend to ensure they have enough to eat until they return to school on Monday morning. The program also provides gifts during the holiday season, such as warm clothing. To enhance wellness on campus and in the surrounding communities, Masonic Village at Dallas hosted a free Medicare 101 workshop, healthy aging seminar series, flu vaccination clinic, fit and healthy basics and estate planning seminars, and the “Tai Chi for Arthritis®” program. The annual Arts and Music Celebration featured masterpieces and holiday tunes by the local community, as well as tours of Masonic Village at Dallas. Residents and community members celebrated the season at Octoberfest (shown left) featuring live music, hot apple cider and vendors, including our Residents Association bake sale. The Irem Clubhouse held two bridal expos in the Grand Ballroom to highlight the wedding services provided by the clubhouse and local vendors. The clubhouse also sponsored a Holiday Craft and Gifts Fair, Halloween Party and its first New Year’s Eve Party, where 160 guests danced to the live band NEPA Soul. The Irem Clubhouse hosted 18 wedding receptions and a total of 425 events last year.

MASONIC VILLAGE AT LAFAYETTE HILL
801 Ridge Pike • Lafayette Hill, PA 19444 • 610-825-6100 • www.masonicvillages.org/lafayettehill Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill was home to 211 residents as of Dec. 31, 2012. The year focused on exploring areas of growth and building strong community partnerships to enhance the lives of staff, residents and neighbors. Pre-marketing for 45 brand new retirement living apartments began in June. The more than 62,000 sq. ft. addition will provide one- and two-bedroom apartments featuring a patio or balcony, indoor access to on-campus amenities and common areas, and a courtyard for residents’ enjoyment. The addition will bring the total number of retirement living apartments to 143. As the new building is being constructed, the façade of the existing building will be updated with a more contemporary style. Total project costs are estimated at $14.5 million. As of Dec. 31, 42 percent of the apartments were reserved. Construction will begin once 70 percent are reserved. Campus enhancements in 2012 included redecorating the main lobby/entrance and installing new carpet in the health care area. The apartments built in 1989 and 1996 are being renovated with new washers/dryers, granite countertops, cabinetry and appliances as they turn over. Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill helped its neighbors by hosting a free Health Fair on Sept. 14 featuring wellness information, screenings, door prizes, healthy snacks, chair massages, tours and exercise and healthy cooking demonstrations. Approximately 150 people attended, making it the most successful Health Fair to date. The spring and fall bazaars, largely organized by retirement living residents, netted $6,200, which supports resident programming and activities. Approximately 800 meals have been distributed to staff in need through the Village Cupboard. Residents knitted and donated two quilts, 50 blankets, 27 hats and 25 scarves for the Montgomery County Chapter of Project Linus, which distributes them to children in hospitals, including the Shriners Hospitals for Children, shelters and social service agencies. Nursing students from Temple, La Salle and Drexel University completed clinical rotations at Masonic Village. Five new Life Skills students from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School started working with the Food Services and Environmental Services Departments during the fall school semester. The Food Services Department worked with Goodwill Keystone Area’s Senior Community Services Program in Montgomery County to train a local senior and help her re-enter the workforce or potentially be employed at Masonic Village.

MASONIC VILLAGE AT SEWICKLEY
1000 Masonic Drive • Sewickley, PA 15143 • 412-741-1400 • www.masonicvillages.org/sewickley As of Dec. 31, 2012, 507 people resided at Masonic Village at Sewickley. The Sturgeon Health Care Center opened on Oct. 1. Construction of the new 64,000 sq. ft. building began mid-September 2010 and converted the health care center from a medical/hospital model to a neighborhood design. The new environment has been well received; on the Resident Satisfaction Survey, residents rated their new accommodations 19 points higher than the last survey. Renovations of the old health care center are underway with plans to finish in 2014. Thanks to two generous donations from residents, the Clubhouse Assembly Room was renovated including expanding the room; adding a stained glass window, dressing room and storage areas; and installing a new audio/video system. Beginning in 2012, villas that turned over were updated with new kitchens including granite countertops, cherry cabinets and stainless appliances. Attendance at marketing events increased four-fold. Masonic Village Home Care staff provided 10,402 hours of home care services in 2012, an increase of 61.5 percent from 2011. Residents enhanced the campus and community in 2012. They filled 35 boxes of personal and school supplies for children in third world countries through Samaritan’s Purse and knitted 87 blankets for Project Linus which donates them to children in hospitals and shelters or social service agencies. For residents in the personal care and nursing neighborhoods, the William Slater II Master Masons Club coordinated a trip to a bowling alley, organized the 5th annual Enchanted Evening, hosted its 8th annual picnic and took nine men for a breakfast outing. The club also sponsored an Easter egg hunt for the Masonic Village Child Care Center.
MASONIC VILLAGE AT WARMINSTER
850 Norristown Road • Warminster, PA 18974 • 215-672-2500 • www.masonicvillages.org/warminster As of Dec. 31, 2012, 60 residents lived at the Masonic Village at Warminster, maintaining 100 percent occupancy. This close-knit community helps residents, family members, volunteers and staff to care for each other as family. June 1 marked the annual Resident/Family Hawaiian Luau where everyone enjoyed a meal and danced to live music. Almost 80 percent of employees responded to a satisfaction survey by Holleran Consulting, and the overall results were significantly higher than the benchmarks for similar facilities. Residents continue to enjoy the Eden Alternative® philosophy, which empowers them to make decisions and enjoy spontaneity. Examples of the philosophy at work include enjoying parties together like Christmas and Valentine’s dinners; themed summer picnics; and cruise ship, Lawrence Welk and boardwalk parties. At the annual Penny Party, the Advisory Council raised $5,973.25, making it the most successful party to date. The proceeds will purchase items to improve the quality of residents’ lives. Last year’s proceeds helped to enhance the lighting in the courtyard. Demonstrated by earning a deficiency-free Department of Health inspection in July, Masonic Village at Warminster continued its tradition of providing excellent care and services. When Hurricane Sandy knocked out the power for three days, employees volunteered to stay through the night to ensure uninterrupted care, hosted happy hour bingo (shown left) and a masquerade dinner with lanterns, and took laundry to the laundromat. All departments operated smoothly despite the storm’s challenges. 14

YOUR GIFTS MAKE A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE The Masonic Charities impacted lives in immeasurable ways in 2012 through the gifts of our donors. Encouraging the study of Freemasonry, staff at the Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania, located in the Masonic Temple, answered more than 500 reference questions and catalogued 1,031 new titles. The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation awarded 50 scholarships totaling $57,800 to deserving students. The Masonic Children’s Home helped four youth graduate high school and move on to post-secondary educational opportunities. At the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, residents in the Masonic Health Care Center made beautiful music using a new set of handheld chimes, which are easy to use regardless of physical limitations. These are just a few of the ways your gifts make a difference. Whether you choose to make contributions today, arrange for them by including a provision in your Will or trust, or through some other appropriate method of planned giving, your gifts take on added meaning when they enable you to realize important personal, as well as charitable, objectives. Making your gifts in honor or in memory of beloved family members, close friends or persons you
hold in respect or esteem is one way you can enhance your contributions by making them very meaningful, satisfying and personal experiences. Numerous honorary or memorial gift opportunities exist for each of the Masonic Charities of the R.W. Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, including The Masonic Temple/Library and Museum of Pennsylvania, Masonic Villages, Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation, Masonic Children’s Home and Masonic Charities Fund. For additional information about how you might make a difference in the lives of others through these opportunities, at no obligation, return the enclosed reply envelope, call the Gift Planning director nearest you or email giving@masonicvillages.org. You can also make a secure donation to any of the Masonic Charities at www.MasonicCharitiesPa.org and receive immediate confirmation that your gift has been received.
