2014 ANNUAL REPORT
MASONIC CHARITIES of the R.W. Grand Lodge F. & A.M. of Pennsylvania
“We like to watch out for each other. When one of us is down, the other tries to be strong, but if we ever have any doubts, someone is always right here to take care of us. We couldn’t be luckier.” - Eva and Clyde Jordan, residents of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown
R.W. GRAND MASTER
ROBERT J. BATEMAN Our Masonic Charities balance the challenge of providing for current needs with anticipating what the future will bring. The mission of each charity drives us to provide for individuals in need in the name of Freemasonry and to prepare for the needs of tomorrow. The Masonic Library and Museum houses our fraternity’s and country’s historical artifacts, as well as beautiful artwork, enclosed in the architecturallymagnificent Masonic Temple. These items are a resource to us within Pennsylvania, as well as the international community. The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation gives kids a great advantage in life. It teaches them lessons for a successful and altruistic future. It also helps address important issues like bullying and child protection and recognizes adults for their dedication to shaping young lives. The Masonic Children’s Home gives up to 40 youth the chance to reach their goals in life while experiencing structure, guidance and friendship. They receive daily necessities and assistance to succeed in school and become responsible adults. The Masonic Villages are home to more than 2,800 individuals who have found a friendly, caring community. Since our founding through today, some residents receive services as part of our core mission regardless of their financial means, while enjoying the freedom to explore their interests and passions in a secure and loving environment. The Masonic Charities Fund offers help at a local, national and global level for Masonic and non-Masonic projects. You can learn more about each of these charities throughout this Annual Report and hear from those who have been impacted by your generosity. Your continued support is deeply appreciated. If you would like to contribute toward any of the charitable opportunities mentioned in this report, please complete and return the enclosed envelope. If you choose to make a provision for one of the Masonic Charities through your estate plans, we invite you to join the Franklin Legacy Society, described on p. 35. Thank you for supporting our Masonic Charities and for keeping Family and Freemasonry United Together as One.
MASONIC CHARITIES FUND
A message from
THE MASONIC CHARITIES FUND The Masonic Charities Fund was established in 1993 by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. Contributions to the fund benefit various charitable organizations, both Masonic and non-Masonic. Most recently, the Masonic Charities Fund has focused its support on the restoration and preservation of the Masonic Temple in
Philadelphia. The Masonic Temple stands as a monument of the strength, stability and energy of the Craft in Pennsylvania. It is a significant priority to ensure that future generations may benefit from the past accomplishments of Freemasonry exemplified through and within the Masonic Temple.

A Sanctuary and a Showpiece
The Masonic Temple, home of The Masonic Library and Museum and Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, is the hallmark of Pennsylvania Freemasonry; a longstanding symbol of fortitude and craftsmanship. The significance of this structure may be most apparent to those who hold monthly lodge meetings in the Masonic Temple, including St. John’s Lodge No. 115, Philadelphia. “Meeting at the Temple is special. The building is special,” Bro. Robert S. Santoro, Sr., secretary, said. “It’s an incredible building; a showpiece. Any Mason who meets there doesn’t want to meet anywhere else.” Bro. Robert realizes the impression the Masonic Temple leaves on people, especially those who see it for the first time. In his almost 25 years in the fraternity, he can’t count the number of petitions he has gained after meeting a person downtown for lunch and then bringing him to the Masonic Temple. “By the time the tour is over, they’re asking for a petition,” he said. “They’re in awe. I think it’s one of the fraternity’s best assets.” For Bro. Robert, the most impressive part of the Masonic Temple is the architecture, carefully constructed over five years (1868-1873) and meticulously preserved over the last 142 years with the help of excellent management, attentive staff and supportive donors. “The quality of the rooms, the condition of the building – it’s so well maintained,” he said. “It’s always immaculate and always shines. I’ve visited lodges in
London, Florence and Rome, and they’re gorgeous and magnificent, but our Temple stands up to them in beauty and splendor any day of the week.” St. John’s Lodge includes 222 members, some of whom drive 45 miles to attend meetings at the Masonic Temple. This active lodge supports the building financially, in addition to community causes near and dear to its members. They restore Masonic graves in a local cemetery, and hold a clothing drive and serve lunch at St. John’s Hospice, among other efforts. In addition, their Motorcycle Riding Club sponsors an annual motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Children’s Fresh Air Home in Wildwood, N.J. Brethren like Bro. Robert find the motivation to continue helping others in part through their inspirational surroundings. “When I walk through those doors, nothing follows me through – no business problems or family problems,” he said. “It’s a sanctuary. I’ve felt that way since the first time I walked inside.” Thanks to the support of generous donors, The Masonic Library and Museum has continued to preserve and spread knowledge of Pennsylvania Freemasonry throughout 2014 and beyond.
The mission of The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania is to maintain and operate a library for the use of Freemasons and the general public and to maintain and operate a museum for the display of items of whatever character dealing with Freemasonry and related subjects. 4
The Masonic Library and Museum of Pennsylvania staff are working to make its collection available online through the SydneyPLUS software and have completed the addition of the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown library collection. A researcher can access titles from Philadelphia and see if they are also available in Elizabethtown. Library staff addressed questions from Masons, researchers and the general public, including more than 377 genealogical and general inquiries.
RESTORED MASONIC TREASURES
Renovations to the Masonic Temple continued to preserve the National Historic Landmark, valued at more than $1 billion (including the building and its contents), for future generations. Improvements included refurbishing the fountain in the main foyer, scaffolding Corinthian Hall to allow touch-up painting repairs, refinishing the Filbert Street doors and upholstering the Wanamaker benches in the lower level hallway. All 174 stairs and two landings on the east staircase received new treads, a new sound system was installed in Corinthian Hall and the Museum was enhanced with new window curtains and shades. The Broad Street entrance is a little brighter thanks to rewiring and new LED lights.
SHINED IN THE SPOTLIGHT
In October, NBC’s “Allegiance” series filmed two episodes in Philadelphia, taking viewers inside the Masonic Temple and making it the focus of the story line. “Allegiance” star Scott Cohen described the Masonic Temple as a “truly fascinating place to be … The history, number one, is phenomenal, and I’d never been in a Masonic temple, ever.” Including the stars of “Allegiance,” approximately 10,783 visitors walked through the Masonic Temple for tours and events, generating more than $64,000 in revenue. Museum staff led tours for 15 descendents of decorative painter Bro. George Herzog, who created 80 percent of the Masonic Temple’s original mural art. University of the Arts Museum Exhibition Planning & Design students, and staff and board members from The Speed Art Museum also toured the Temple.

PENNSYLVANIA MASONIC YOUTH FOUNDATION 1244 Bainbridge Road • Elizabethtown, PA 17022 • 717-367-1536 • www.pmyf.org
A Respectable Life Bro. Bill Glose, P.M., Jordan-Martin Lodge No. 673, Allentown, was just four merit badges away from becoming an Eagle Scout when he attended his first DeMolay function. He instantly recognized the value of being a part of a Masonic youth group and committed all his time and energy to it. It was a decision that would shape his life. He almost immediately worked his way through the chairs of the Allentown Chapter and served as Master Councilor and, subsequently, as a state officer. “I learned how to live by the Seven Cardinal virtues of DeMolay,” Bro. Bill said. “The most impressive was ‘Think twice before speaking once.’ I’ve said it an infinite number of times, and I live by it.” While attending Lehigh University, he started a DeMolay club for other students from out of the area who were DeMolay members. Word spread about the club, and some youth even chose to attend the university because of it. He made lifelong friends, including a group of former DeMolays he still gathers with for frequent dinners, theatre shows and trips throughout the year. As Bro. Bill grew older and joined the Masonic fraternity, he carried the lessons he learned in DeMolay with him and stayed committed to the group. He served as chapter advisor for Allentown DeMolay for seven years and as chairman of the advisory counsel. He currently serves as a program director on the state
Executive Officer’s staff. “DeMolay is still high on my list because of what it taught me and what it gave me – a respectable life,” he said. “I want to pass this on to future generations. There is great satisfaction in working with young men in a very positive environment, molding characters that lead to profound lives, and teaching them to be better sons, better students and, eventually, better husbands and better parents. I’ve watched young men go on to become attorneys, state senators, corporate officers, CPAs, officers in banks and much more.” He continues to research and speak about DeMolay to youth groups, Masonic lodges and Order of the Eastern Star chapters. Bro. Bill has been recognized with numerous honors, ranging from the Legion of Honor to the HODEGOS Award for outstanding leadership to the youth program, and was honored as a 33° Mason in 1979. He credits his wife’s support of all his activities as a major part of his success. Bro. Bill’s support of PMYF extends financially as well. He makes a point of contributing a donation whenever he learns that a Senior DeMolay he knew passed away, as well as former advisors and lodge members.
The mission of the Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation (PMYF) is to lead the Masonic fraternity in providing services on behalf of young people, and training for adults who work for the betterment of youth. To accomplish this mission, the Foundation will enhance the programs of the Masonic youth groups; support initiatives to keep children safe from violence, abuse and exploitation; and provide specialized education for adults who offer leadership to youth in the Commonwealth. 6
ASSISTED WITH THE PURSUIT OF DREAMS To aid youth in taking the skills they’ve learned through PMYF and using them to achieve their career goals, the Educational Endowment Fund Committee selected 55 students out of 168 applicants to receive $125,500 in scholarship awards. The committee exceeded $1 million in scholarship awards since the program’s inception in 1989.
EXCELLED BEYOND SCHOOL
Every summer, 100 youth, ages 12-17, from throughout the world gather at the Masonic Conference Center Patton Campus in Elizabethtown for LifeSkills. They gain experience according to their capabilities through a series of social, emotional, mental and physical challenges. With the guidance of with 30 staff instructors, they explore leadership from the inside out, practicing the philosophy: “As we serve others, we improve ourselves.”
WELCOMED NEW MEMBERS
Thanks to dedicated leaders and youth and the support of Masonic lodges, Lehigh Valley Rainbow Assembly #190 in Macungie, and Delaware Valley Rainbow Assembly #191, LT, in Concordville, were constituted.
GAVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
All three youth groups devote time and effort to supporting charitable organizations. In addition to volunteering at the various Masonic Villages for special events, they contributed to Hearing Impaired Kids Endowment (HIKE), sent packages and card to troops serving overseas, worked with Masonic lodges to collect food for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and host Child Identification Program (CHIP) events, made craft kits for Caitlin’s Smiles to give to children in hospitals and raised money for the Children’s Dyslexia Centers.

“I support [PMYF] physically and spiritually, as well as financially, because they’re doing a great job,” he said. “They have done a fabulous job with the changes to Patton campus. “My Masonic journey has been very rewarding; DeMolay has been very rewarding. I’ve lived a very fulfilling life. I’m proud of my accomplishments. I’ll continue to be active as long as physically and mentally possible. I’ve met hundreds of nice men and women whom I’ve impacted. I’m better for it, and they are, too. They’ve taught me as much as I’ve taught them.” Continuing to exemplify the lessons that made Bro. Bill the man he is today, PMYF shaped the lives of hundreds of youth in 2014.

MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
One Masonic Drive • Elizabethtown, PA 17022 • 717-367-1121, ext. 33301 • www.masonicchildrenshome.org
A Strong Advantage Tianee never thought pursuing an education after high school was possible. Looking back on when she moved to the Masonic Children’s Home, she wasn’t sure what the future would hold. Now, this soon-to-be high school graduate has big plans. “When Tianee came to the children’s home she was an energetic 12-year-old. I can still remember when she would weave herself in and out of the dining room chairs,” Michele McLaughlin, child care worker, said. “She discovered books around age 13 and has been a bookworm ever since.” As an avid reader, Tianee wants to further her education in writing and editing, and with the help of the children’s home, she will have the chance. “I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy novels, and I have a lot of favorites,” she said. “I would like to professionally edit books.” Earlier this year, Tianee went to look at two colleges. After touring both schools and listing the pros and cons, she chose to attend Kutztown University in the fall. “I feel really good knowing the children’s home will pay for my education,” Tianee said. “They’ve
given me a strong advantage for the future.” The Masonic Children’s Home is currently supporting nine students as they further their education in their chosen fields of interests. With the announcement on Youth Appreciation Day that the Masonic Children’s Home Centennial Campaign reached its goal of raising $10 million, many more college dreams can be funded in the future. Although she is ready to gain the independence most college students crave, Tianee will miss all the activity at the children’s home. “I’ll miss the summer vacations,” Tianee said. “Those were always so much fun.” Last summer, the children’s home made memories as they vacationed in Wildwood, N.J., where they played on the beach and walked the boardwalk. Also, as part of their summer traditions, they took trips to nearby Hersheypark. Before coming to the children’s home, most youth had never experienced a vacation. While they are proud Tianee is graduating and starting her future, the house parents at Umbaugh Cottage will miss her drive and kindness.
At one time, up to 40 youth – whose home or socioeconomic environments do not provide for their healthy growth and development – live in five cottages at the Masonic Children’s Home. Staff create a supportive, homelike environment filled with guidance and love. 8
MASONIC CHILDREN’S HOME
“She is very mature for her age,” Michele said. “She is always such a help to new children and staff. Tianee is a hard worker, but she still has that child-like wonderment for learning and exploring, which I think is a true gift.” To help save for a car and have some extra spending money, Tianee works at the Hershey Lodge as an activities attendant, where she plans and participates in activities with the families and youth groups who visit the lodge. During the school year, she only works on weekends, but in the summer, Tianee works as many days as possible. Thankfully, her house parents provide transportation and assist her whenever she needs it. “I really like working there, and I get to meet a lot of interesting people,” Tianee said. “It gives me good experience.” As Tianee balances work and school, the house parents and tutors at the Masonic Children’s Home make sure she is not feeling too overwhelmed by providing her with support and extra educational resources if she needs them. With the generosity of a few donors, each child at the children’s home will receive an additional education resource and will be able to complete his or her schoolwork more efficiently with their own personal laptop. Each child will be able to save his or her homework and school projects in one place and access it at any time. The children can also use their laptops to access email and social media to keep in contact with family and friends. To guarantee their safety and responsibility while using the Internet, each child and a guardian must sign an Internet Contract prior to computer use. “Ensuring each child has access to a computer and the Internet has become a necessity to make sure they keep up with their peers and the world around them,” Virginia Migrala, director of children’s services, said. “The laptops will especially help our seniors who are researching schools and preparing for college.” Thanks to kind donors and staff who have helped support the Masonic Children’s Home, Tianee will soon be accomplishing her biggest life goal: a college education, which will be a great start to the rest of her life.

MAKING WISHES COME TRUE The Masonic Villages’ Wish List includes items essential for daily operations. Thanks to all those who have contributed toward enhancing the lives of our residents. Residents of the Bleiler Caring Cottage in Elizabethtown, home to adults with developmental disabilities, have a new gazebo in which they can sit and relax and overlook the Lancaster County farmland from their backyard. The residents also had the chance to go on several trips including camp, the Philadelphia Zoo, Strasburg Railroad, Hersheypark and Ringling Bros. Circus, which created lifelong memories. Residents Howard and Scott look forward to attending Camp Swatara every year because they enjoy meeting and making new friends. Plus, they both love to eat the food! At Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, patients receiving hospice care can ride around in a golf cart, thanks to generous donor Rosemary Merwin, and behold the 1,400-acre scenic campus. “People can go out and see the gardens and experience being outdoors even for just a little while. They can get some fresh air and see the leaves and changing seasons,” Rosemary said. Residents of the Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill took a trip to Baltimore, Maryland, visiting the National Aquarium and local restaurants. “I thought the trip to the aquarium was nice, as was having time to walk around the harbor,” resident Jim Heidler said. “We had good weather and a nice lunch. The bus was comfortable. I think it’s great, whether individuals or lodges contribute, to help support residents.” A new horseshoe set at the Masonic Village at Dallas is bringing residents together for this favorite pasttime. “Our capable staff, in cooperation with a willing resident who donated a portion of his backyard, installed the professional-looking court,” resident Merr Trumbore said. “With warm weather
approaching, the village’s horseshoe pitching enthusiasts should be gathering at the court and sharing many hours of enjoyment with their neighbors.” At the Masonic Village at Sewickley, hearing assistance devices for residents with limited hearing have enhanced church services, movies and other programs. “Being part of the conversation is quality of life,” Lynette Gerstel, activities coordinator, said. “I think a lot of times, people didn’t even realize what they were missing. Now, they are engaged during groups.” At the Masonic Village at Warminster, a new DVD movie collection, rocking chairs, blood pressure monitors and a fireplace have all added some extra comfort for residents. “They enjoy watching movies together,” Trisha Lamb, activities director, said. “Afterwards, some interesting discussions may ensue, as well as reminiscing. Everyone has a favorite actor or actress.”
HONORING VETERANS With hundreds of veterans living at the Masonic Villages, honoring their sacrifices is important. Through special events and programs, residents and staff show appreciation for all veterans and those currently serving in our military. The Eternal Flame monument was dedicated in the Veterans Grove at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown on Autumn Day, Sept. 20, to honor the brave service men and women who have sacrificed to preserve our freedom. Approximately 10,000 visitors, including Masonic Village residents, staff and volunteers; Grand Lodge Officers; federal, state and local representatives; and then-Gov. Tom Corbett attended the event. The Eternal Flame is lit 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year as a constant tribute and symbol of gratitude. A plaque on the front of the monument reads: “All gave some … Some gave all.” Pavers surrounding the monument are inscribed with remembrance messages from donors. The Masonic fraternity is dedicated to assisting veterans, members of the military and their families. Through its Change for the Troops program, Pennsylvania Freemasons, including Masonic Villages residents, have donated $837,529 since 2008 toward calling cards for deployed soldiers, baby showers, child day care, holiday parties for military families, support for veterans and more. 10
MASONIC VILLAGES
The Right Balance To say Ruth Devlin has lived an active life would be an understatement. She spent much of her life working full or part-time as a health/physical education teacher, as well as covering other subjects, in addition to raising six children. After her husband passed away, her home became a little too much work for her. She moved to Masonic Village at Sewickley in 2009 and kept up her active lifestyle with hours in the pool and fitness center. She attends most of the trips, events and programs offered on campus and volunteers as a tour guide. “I would encourage anyone to move here,” she said. “Every individual needs a place where he or she can live independently and free from responsibility. After observing others who live in communities like this, I know Masonic Village is the best.” Beyond the fun, Ruth enjoys the people of Masonic Village. “The residents and staff are wonderful,” she said. “The staff are considerate and well-trained. They do a wonderful job. Everyone in the kitchen, dining, home care, health care, housekeeping, maintenance departments – they’re all very kind. Everything is provided for us.”
SURROUNDED BY CARE
The only thing that could slow Ruth down was a health problem, which would come in the form of a stroke last November. She was in the hospital for two weeks before transferring to Masonic Village’s Sturgeon Health Care Center. Additions and improvements to this building were completed in August 2014. The residents’ new 110,000 sq. ft. home is laid out in eight 16-bed units, called “neighborhoods.” Every neighborhood has a living room with a fireplace and large screen television, a parlor room for parties and family gatherings, and a dining room with a private kitchen that serves cooked-to-order entrées.
“It’s warm. It’s comfortable. Residents are receiving exceptional care,” Eric Gross, executive director, said. “It’s much easier for residents to transition here if they need this level of care.” The Dogwood and Redwood Courts (each neighborhood has been named for a variety of tree on campus, as voted on by residents and employees) are special care areas designed to accommodate up to 32 residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. Hawthorne Court is home to the new Transitional Care Unit, providing short-term rehabilitation for individuals recovering from injuries and illnesses while reducing their chance of rehospitalization. This unit offers physical, speech and occupational therapy and features state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment and technology. Hawthorne Court was Ruth’s home for 17 days, enabling her to receive the assistance she needed close to people she knows. “I received excellent care,” she said, “good nursing care and therapy care. I went to occupational and physical therapy once a day. Someone always came to my room and escorted me to therapy.” For some extra help around the house, Ruth utilizes Masonic Village Home Care services every two weeks. This allows her even more time to go on Fred’s Mystery Tour (a monthly trip in which residents try to guess the destination based on clues) and lunch outings, appreciate concerts and attend lifelong learning programs. Masonic Village offers her the right amount of comfort, care and enjoyment. “Masonic Village’s Mission of Love means taking personal interest in every individual who lives here and showing them Masonic Village cares,” Ruth said. “They make sure you’re enjoying the life you expect and want to live.” 11
WHAT WE DID IN 2014 CELEBRATED NEW FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS
Ranked by the total number of senior living units (2,347), Masonic Villages is the nation’s 20th largest not-for-profit multisite senior living organization in the nation, up from 22nd in 2013. Growth continued across the state. At the Masonic Village at Dallas, we saw nearly all the retirement living villas reserved. At the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, 100 new retirement living cottages were completed. In Lafayette Hill, construction of 60 new retirement living apartments and façade updates are underway, with completion expected by summer 2015.
OFFERED TRANSITIONAL CARE
Masonic Villages’ Elizabethtown and Sewickley locations opened Transitional Care Units to provide short-term rehabilitation to residents and community members. Elizabethtown’s unit includes 28 private and 20 semi-private suites, and Sewickley’s includes 15 private rooms. “Rehospitalization is one of the largest problems in the medical system, with many individuals being readmitted back into hospitals within a month of being discharged,” John Mast, M.D., C.M.D., associate medical director in Elizabethtown, said. “This problem is especially common among older adults. Rehabilitation care can help to reduce these rates, which ultimately benefits patients and the health care industry as a whole.”
WERE RECOGNIZED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
A testament to the high quality care provided at the Masonic Village at Warminster, the community earned the state’s Excellence in Health Care Compliance Award in 2014 for achieving three years of deficiency-free surveys from the Department of Health. This recognition (shown in photo above) was earned by only six of the state’s 706 nursing care facilities. “I have worked here for 10 years,” Celena Williams, nursing supervisor, said. “I started out as an aide and now am a nursing supervisor. It feels like a home, and everybody works as a team to care for our residents. I am proud to be a part of this great award.” Therapeutic recreation staff in Elizabethtown were recognized by the Pennsylvania Therapeutic Recreation Society (PTRS) with the Outstanding Special Event Award and Outstanding New Professional Award. PTRS also named resident Etta Irwin Volunteer of the Year and recognized the National Sojourners - Harrisburg Chapter No. 76 with the Organization/Agency Award for the Massing of the Colors flag display they coordinate each year. Residents and staff in Lafayette Hill were featured on abc6 television news after placing first at the 34th annual Senior Games.

BUILT SMARTER
With each new construction project, we improve on the percentage of sustainable materials used. For example, glass tiles used in the Masonic Health Care Center renovation in Elizabethtown are made with materials from old sinks, tubs, etc. Since the implementation of an energy efficiency plan six years ago, Masonic Villages has reduced total energy use by approximately 15 percent, thanks in part to the installation of LED lights and the replacement of aged heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment with high efficiency units. The 1 MW solar project in Elizabethtown generates electricity at a rate about 8 percent higher than originally estimated.
SHARED OUR EXPERTISE
As manager of Masonic Charity Foundation, which owns the Masonic Home of New Jersey, Ashlar Creative Solutions oversaw the successful renovation and marketing of retirement living units; the refunding of existing debt, which resulted in more than $1.2 million in annual savings; and operational and process changes that resulted in cost savings and increased revenue that goes directly to support their extensive charitable mission. Ashlar, a for-profit subsidiary of the Masonic Villages which provides management, development and consulting services to other senior service organizations, generates income to help underwrite our nonprofit Mission of Love.
Mission of Love
Our caring communities and services assist individuals, families and children in realizing their potential and enjoying the highest possible quality of life through the traditions of Freemasonry.
Our Vision is to be a Center of Excellence. Our Mission of Love Values: Quality of Life • Respect for the Individual • Quality Service • Outreach 12
Each day, residents of the Masonic Villages wake up and have many choices to make. They can eat breakfast at a time that is convenient for them and then decide whether to participate in a Bible study, creative arts class or exercise routine; attend a concert or movie; visit the hair salon; or go on a trip. If they choose, they can relax and watch television or make a phone call. What they don’t have to consider is how they will pay for these services. “I think we chose the Masonic Village options that were available because of being a member of the Masonic lodge and knowing that my future would be taken care of no matter what my financial circumstances may wind up,” Bro. Ronald Whitehill, Clarion Lodge No. 277, a resident of the Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill, said. “As of now, we are quite independent, but if we live long enough, that could change.” Medicare and Medicaid do not cover many services beyond medical care, such as dental care and dentures, hearing aids, pastoral counseling, social services, occupational and speech therapy, television and telephone services and hair care services, all of which the Masonic Villages provide, thanks to our supporters. Donations to the Masonic Compassionate Care Fund specifically help cover health care costs of residents in Elizabethtown, Lafayette Hill, Sewickley and Warminster, and provide reassurance that essential services will be available to them even if their assets deplete. This includes unreimbursed Medicare and Medicaid costs, which totaled more than $8 million in 2014. Programs like the Enchanted Evening in Sewickley and Harvest Ball in Lafayette Hill (which many residents and volunteers make possible) treat residents to a night of pampering, gourmet food and entertainment. Hospice staff in Elizabethtown are able to provide patients with special moments, like a final plane ride for a former pilot or the chance for a former trainer to ride a

In Lafayette Hill, local Boy Scout troops organized a day of camping events for residents including merit badges, songs and s’mores. Residents in Elizabethtown and Sewickley engage with one another and their past through Music Therapy. “With the trumpet, I can go back to all the places in my life that it took me,” Elizabethtown resident and music therapy participant Bill Hornberger said. “At times, I think of my wife or my mother. I’ll soon be 100, but my trumpet will always keep me young at heart.” Residents in Warminster can belt out their favorite tunes with a new karaoke machine. In 2014, through the generosity of Pennsylvania Freemasons, their families and others who have contributed to our mission, the Masonic Villages provided charitable care and services worth approximately $35 million across the state to individuals unable to pay for their care.

Contributions to other Pennsylvania Masonic charitable organizations as part of Masonic Villages’ mission Loss incurred in the fulfillment of our charitable mission This loss was covered by the following support from the members and friends of the fraternity:
The operating expenses of the Masonic Villages have historically exceeded operating revenues. Through the generosity of Freemasons and friends of the fraternity, contributions and bequests enable the Masonic Villages to cover this deficit. The bequests, which have been generously donated to the Masonic Villages, have been invested, and the investment income earned on these funds allows Masonic Villages to continue its “Mission of Love” and caring for those in need. Any excess funds will be invested so Masonic Villages can continue to provide charitable services to our residents and the community in the future. 13
