NOTE FROM ADMINISTRATION

How to Combat the Winter Doldrums Stacy Schroder, director of wellness and prevention

Even though February has the shortest amount of days, it can be the longest month to get through as the winter doldrums set in. Practicing mindfulness can bring joy into your day, help you to appreciate all you have and alleviate stress. Mindfulness is the practice of becoming more fully aware of the present moment — completely without judgment — rather than dwelling in the past or projecting into the future. It is the practice of being "in the now." Mindfulness involves being fully engaged in whatever is going on around you. It is simply the act of paying attention to whatever you are experiencing, as you experience it. Being preoccupied with the past or future can contribute to depression and loneliness. Overfocusing on the past can bring up anxiety, remorse or guilt, while over-focusing on the future can provoke fear or “what-if” thinking. By focusing on the “here and now,” we can free ourselves from being connected to other parts of time. Practicing mindfulness – through meditation, prayer and focusing on the present moment - can improve physical and mental health and relieve stress.

How to Live in the “NOW” Find a quiet, comfortable place. Sit in a chair with your head, neck and back straight but not stiff. Try to stay in the present, putting aside all thoughts of the past and future. Focus on the sensation of air moving in and out of your body as you breathe. Feel your belly rise and fall, the air enter your nostrils and leave your mouth. Pay attention to the way each breath changes and is different.

Invest in Yourself With mindful meditation, the more you do, the greater effect it usually has. Most people find that it takes at least 20 minutes for the mind to begin to settle, so this is a reasonable way to start. If you’re ready for a more serious commitment, 45 minutes of meditation at least six days a week is best. Being mindful makes it easier to savor life’s pleasures as they occur. It helps you more fully engage in activities and creates a greater capacity to deal with adverse events. Many who practice mindfulness find they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or past regrets, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem and can better form deep connections with others. For more information about practicing mindfulness, contact the Baird Wellness Center at ext. 33783. Come join the Baird Wellness Center’s classes on mindfulness including Tai Chi, Yoga and the Brain Fitness Club!

Watch every thought come and go, whether it be a worry, fear or hope. When thoughts come up in your mind, don't ignore or suppress them but simply note them. Remain calm, anchored by your breathing. If you find yourself getting carried away, observe where your mind went off to, without judging, and simply return to your breathing.
