Located in the Star Points Building, the Barley Wellness Center offers state-of-the-art equipment, fitness classes and an indoor pool and spa. Trained staff will help you develop a personalized fitness program.

Fit for Life focuses on balance, strength and flexibility to help increase your strength and stability for a better quality of life.

Senior Yoga

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11:30 a.m. - Noon Assembly Room

Our instructor, Claudia, will guide you through a gentle half-hour yoga session of seated and standing poses focused on strength, relaxation, balance and flexibility.

Golden Aerobics

Tuesday & Thursday 9 - 9:45 a.m. Assembly Room

Designed to work your entire body, this class will benefit individuals who are looking for an active cardiovascular workout with intervals of strength, flexibility and range-of-motion exercises.

Tai Chi

Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 – 10:30 a.m. Assembly Room

Tai Chi has been described as meditation in motion, gentle flowing movement performed in a slow, focused manner. Anyone can participate, as Tai Chi places minimal stress on muscles and joints. Therefore, it is especially suitable and beneficial for older adults. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, increased energy and improved flexibility and balance.

Walking Group

Tuesday & Thursday 11 - 11:30 a.m. Assembly Room

Our wellness staff will warm you up and cool you down with various exercises before and after a short walk. Join neighbors and friends for good music and conversation, all while contributing to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Stretching

Tuesday & Thursday 1:30 - 2:15 p.m. Activity Room 6

The wellness team will guide you through gentle stretches to improve flexibility and balance and increase range of motion, making it easier to perform everyday tasks.

PROGRAMS AND ENTERTAINMENT Book Journal Club Wednesdays 1 p.m. Social Room

This fall, the Pastoral Care Department is hosting a book journal club facilitated by Amy Armanious, RN, a faith community nurse and spiritual director at Samaritan Counseling, Guidance, Consulting. The book is titled, “The Cup of Our Life: A Guide to Spiritual Growth” by Joyce Rupp. This gathering provides time for self-reflection, learning and fellowship opportunities for individuals who are interested in spiritual care and spiritual health. There is no cost, and materials will be provided.

The Village Workshop Sale Nov. 15 & 16 4 - 7 p.m. Great Room

Now’s your chance to pick up some wooden toys for the special children in your life! There will also be Christmas tree ornaments and handy items like oven rack pulls, trivets, trays, desk organizers and more. All proceeds benefit the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Foundation and Shriners Childrens Hospital.

Project Linus Holiday Sale Nov. 15 & 16 4 - 7 p.m. Great Room

The Project Linus Group makes baby blankets and quilts for children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need. They also make dish scrubbers, dish cloths, card holders, scarves and mittens, stuffed animals and so much more. Grab some beautiful handmade gifts for the holidays or even something for yourself!

Rescheduled! Scott has worked in 49 of the 50 states and well over 30 countries. He has been invited to fly on Air Force One on several occasions. His slide presentation will explore his many subjects as he explains how he has evolved as a photographer over the years. You can purchase some of his work, learn how to use your cell phone to capture some beautiful shots of your adventures and truly enjoy your evening with style and class. Angela Lansbury is an entertainment icon with a legendary career. After appearing in many movies, Lansbury finally gained stardom in 1966 playing the leading role in Broadway’s musical, “Mame.” She went on to play an array of roles in numerous Disney films and achieved worldwide fame as fictional writer/ sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the whodunit series, “Murder She Wrote.” Presented in her trademark cabaret style, join Patty Carver in a story and nostalgia-filled musical tribute to the legendary entertainment icon.

Veterans Day Program: From Carlisle Barracks to Camp Lucky Strike Thursday, Nov. 9 7 p.m. Assembly Room

Journey through WWII with Frank R. Braden, Jr., MD, as he begins at Carlisle Barracks; maneuvers in Texas and Louisiana; travels to Kingston Deverill, England; and lands in Omaha Beach.Tour through Belgium, France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. These photos were taken by someone with varying interests beyond the horrors of war. They will showcase the day-to-day life in the Combat Engineers and how the citizens of these countries coped with war.

NOVEMBER RECIPE

BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH WALNUTS AND CAPERS 1 lb. Brussels sprouts

Directions:

¾ cup Olive oil

Cut stems off sprouts, remove loose leaves and cut in half.

¾ cup Vegetable oil ¾ cup Red wine vinegar 3 tbsp. Honey 3 Cloves of garlic, minced 12 Anchovies, rinsed, dried, smashed into paste 1 tsp. Crushed red pepper (optional) 6 Scallions (white and green), sliced thin

Heat a couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet on medium to medium-high heat, and fry sprouts until tender and crispy. Toss with enough dressing to coat, and season with a little salt and pepper. Sprinkle with toasted chopped walnuts. OR

3 tbsp. Capers, rinsed

Preheat oven to 425°.

Combine above.

1 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped

Toss sprouts with enough vegetable oil to coat, and a little salt and pepper. Spread sprouts on large baking sheet and roast in the center of the oven, tossing once or twice, until sprouts are tender and lightly charred in spots; about 30 minutes. Toss with enough dressing to coat, and season with a little salt and pepper. Sprinkle with toasted chopped walnuts. Yield: 3 - 4 appetizer portions Leftover dressing will keep in the refrigerator, covered, for 2 - 3 weeks.

Single sheet fold books will be explored. A single sheet of paper is folded, then cut, creating unusual page formations. Several types of mazes will be demonstrated. Hard front and back covers with a closure will complete the book. Instructor: Karen Campbell.

America in the Gilded Age Nov. 6 1865: “Bind Up the Nation’s Wounds” We will explore the post-Civil War era, along with the social, political and economic changes that occurred. These are the forces that shaped the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. The Reconstruction Revolution We learned in school about the Reconstruction Period after the Civil War, and the government policies and legislation that were put in place. In this lecture, we will discuss how these laws progressively dismantled the South back to white-dominated rule.

Nov. 13 Buffalo Bill Cody and the Myth of the West

Why was everyone so anxious to move West? What were the myths that drew settlers? Also, what were the realities of the migration and conflicts with Native Americans

that led to violence and tragedy? All questions will be answered. Smokestack Nation: The Industrial Titans By the year 1900, America had grown to be the greatest industrial power. We will study the rise of big business in the railroad, steel and oil industries, along with the explosion of consumerism and advertising that went along with it.

Nov. 20 Andrew Carnegie: The “Self-Made” Ideal We will learn about the ideal of the “self-made” man, from Horatio Alger to Andrew Carnegie, and how that ideal became entwined with social Darwinism. Big Business: Democracy for Sale The power of big business, with economic inequality, government corruption and violent conflict between labor and capital, was a major concern at the turn of the 20th century.

Nov. 27 The New Immigrants: A New America Society was transformed with the widespread influx of immigrants during the Gilded Age. We will learn how the immigrants fundamentally changed the nation. Big Cities: The Underbelly Revealed Massive urbanization with the immigrants led to more industrialization, migration and revolutionary technologies.
