Atelier PRO office, Den Haag housing subtly fitted in dune garden Atelier PRO is located in its current location in The Hague since 1976. What started as a small group of enthusiastic professionals has grown over the years into an agency of fifty professionals with ambition. Due to the organic growth of the agency, the housing has expanded over the years. At every extension, we were inspired by the strength of the location and respect for the dune environment. This idea of “genus loci” underlies all design solutions of our architects. Our own agency is a prime example of this.

Kantoor EDGE Stadium, Amsterdam large-scale renovation and extension of an existing building from 2000, also designed by PRO In the fall of 2020, the current tenant will move from the Forum office in Amsterdam, which was also designed by atelier PRO in 2001. At the time this characteristic building was ahead of its time in the field of sustainability. The renovation will adapt the building to the contemporary demands of office use. In addition, expansion is taking place with additional office space. The main design of the building is formed by two long office wings with a central zone. This central zone consists of two transparent building volumes on the north and south sides with a large atrium in between. The atrium will have a completely new look and will be redesigned as a central space with facilities for the tenants.

Renovation of ING Maple, Amsterdam a second life for an office building from the eighties With the ‘Maple’ building on Bijlmerdreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost, atelier PRO transformed a dated office from the 1980s into a high-end workspace for ING. The redevelopment is part of the larger urban development of the area into innovation district Cumulus Park. The façade on Bijlmerdreef is composed of staggered glass panes encased by coloured aluminium window frames, combined with alternating bay windows; this creates the impression of a facetted surface, giving the building a geometric, ‘crystal-like’ quality. The geometric structure not only serves as an eye-catcher, but also has a practical purpose, due to its mitigating effect on lowangle sunlight. Besides being responsible for the building’s renovation, Atelier PRO also developed the design of the entire fit-out and furnishings.

Verwaltungsgebäude IKK, Saarbrücken Cornerstone new area development Headquarters IKK Located in the Quartier Eurobahnhof in Saarbrücken, Germany, the new office building of IKK Südwest accommodates approximately 1000 workspaces. The building brings together the organisation’s various offices, which were scattered across Saarbrücken, under one roof. The project consists of a main building with underground car park and five office floors. The office spaces are grouped around an atrium that serves as a connection and reception area. In the west and east wing, two-storey communication zones were created, which are connected via a void and provide a visual link between the indoor and outdoor areas through large areas of glass. Opposite the main building is the annex, which is mainly used as office space.

Interior of Town Hall Quarter, Deventer ‘the new world of waiting’ beside ‘the new world of working’

Atelier PRO was responsible for the renovation and restoration of the monumental parts of the new city hall. We brought back as much as possible the old glory of the rooms and offices in these historical parts and have further strengthened them by creatively using color. The rooms have been carefully decorated with both antique and contemporary elements, incorporating the latest technology. These new additions fit nicely and naturally in the historical character. Our design is focused on the possibility of making choices and the extent of making adjustments. The tables can be used multi-purpose and can easily be adjusted in a large conference table set-up or divided into separate parts for smaller conversations. But also as a visitor you can choose options. Do you have to get your passport? Then you take a seat on a wooden bench. However, in preparation of a long appointment, you can withdraw into a quiet corner. We have called this concept ‘The New Waiting’. To make use of the spatial quality of the vacant rentable floors as best as possible, atelier PRO has adapted the first layout with the clearest logistics, the best orientation, and the most beautiful light. With the resources that the method of Activity Based Working provided, the space is divided into several working and meeting spaces.

Renovation and interior Tower C a new interior for outdated office floor Completed in 2005, the Prinsenhof is a metropolitan, multipurpose building located in het Beatrixkwartier, The Hague. Ten years after the completion the original tenants left, relocated or downsized. Owner Bouwinvest and property manager CBRE commissioned atelier PRO to completely transform one vacant office floor in Tower C in one season, within a specified budget. The aim of the transformation was to create a modern ‘floor model’ in order to show contemporary companies how this modern space can be used.

Town Hall Bronckhorst an exceptionally durable and energy efficient town hall Town Hall Bronckhorst is the result of joining about forty villages and communities to become one of the greatest rural towns in the Netherlands. The town hall houses office units, meeting rooms, a public reception desk and a council chamber. The design is particularly special as the town hall was the first building ever for which passive building techniques have been used in public utilities building. With a very energy efficient building as a result.

Interior Town hall Zeist a sustainable tailor made suit The various housing locations of the municipality of Zeist will be joined in order to concentrate the municipal housing. In this new working environment, people will work in a different way, namely according to the principles of The New World of Work. As part of this method, flexible workplaces are introduced. In addition, the public task will be focussed on the future, based on the vision ’The municipality has the answer’. A counter for the citizen. These developments not only have their consequences for the zoning of the building, the design and the furniture, but also for the culture of the municipality. Museum infill and restructure of the Allard Pierson institute a hidden gem at the Oude Turfmarkt Atelier PRO designed the new construction and renovation for the Allard Pierson, a monumental university knowledge and heritage institute of the University of Amsterdam. A transparent infill has been realized within the existing building lines. With the transparent new construction made of steel and glass, this ensemble remains legible and the various heights were linked with a new facade. By connecting the new extension space with the existing spaces in the building, a more compact routing through the collection presentations has been created.

In this building, where a variety of visitors come together, a theatre, a music school and a library have been consolidated into one cultural heart. All this is reflected in a composition of lighted white surfaces, flowing shapes and the wooden monolith of the auditorium which functions as a décor for Winschoten’s cultural life.

Van Heek Car Park tunnel, Enschede daylight into the lower parking level

You are heading for the hospital, feeling tensed and anxious. Will there be good news or bad? Your state of mind does not really help you to pass the three minutes through this dark tunnel in the underground parking. Being aware of that we realized that we should not design just a tunnel. We looked for an almost adventourous excitement to add an extra dimension to this underground journey. An ingredient was added to complement the dark robust and tough materials contrasting with the fine white gloss portals. A moving and colouring light scheme (art work by Claudia Wissmann) adds a new virtual dimension to the journey. It has become even agreeable. Apartments Gouda wooncomplex met 63 appartementen

Atelier PRO designed a residential complex with 67 apartments in Gouda for housing corporations Mozaïek Wonen and Woonpartners Midden-Holland - 67 social housing units, which are in great demand. On all fronts, we opted for quality: the design is carefully detailed, the complex is situated on a prominent location, the houses are spacious, each apartment has its own winter garden, and biodiversity was an active factor in the design; in doing so, we managed to create social housing with the quality of an owner-occupied dwelling. The new building is clearly seen as an improvement for the neighbourhood, and as such was embraced by residents.

Period 2016 - 2021 Client MN and Proactief Vastgoed, Pensioenfonds Metaal en Techniek Project architect Hans Kalkhoven, Alex Letteboer, Antony Laurijsen Address Bastiaanpoort, Delft Gross floor area 8,260 m²

2021 saw the completion of housing and retail complex Bastiaanpoort in Delft. The building occupies an important location on the edge of the historic city centre, previously home to department store V&D. After the bankruptcy of this retail chain, property developers MN and Proactief Vastgoed opted to redevelop the site on behalf of Pension Fund Metaal & Techniek. The result is a building block with rental housing and shops in the plinth, adding to the housing stock in Delft and the liveliness of the neighbourhood. The complex is designed as a recognisable, uniform building block, executed in warm-hued brick. Standing at a height of four floors, it provides a transition between the higher new constructions around the Bastiaansplein and the lower buildings of the historical city centre.

Waterlandplein Amsterdam uniform plinth creates unity and coherence The old Waterlandplein in North Amsterdam was given a completely new look. Atelier PRO was asked to design the plinth course and one of the residential towers, as well as the community centre, the health care centre, the car parks and the green roofs, which have been given various interpretations due to their deviating position and function. Three existing residential towers are integrated in the plan and renovated by Hans van Heeswijk. The five other towers were designed by the Architecten Cie.

The sculptural building volumes provide ageing in place houses, which meet high comfort and accessibility demands. The two villas are situated near the water, so that the inhabitants can optimally enjoy the view and sunlight. Additionally, the house plans have been organized in a similar way. The size of the window openings follows the orientation: a lot of glass on the south side and narrow windows on the north side; which is favourable for the energy performance of the houses.

In terms of appearance and scale, the new building fits in well with the environment, due to the yellow brick and smaller dimensions and detailing Plaatwerkerij during construction and after the transformation

53

The monumental Zware Plaatwerkerij (Metal sheet factory) shipyard building in the heart of Vlissingen, and the adjacent site, is transformed into a residential care complex with residences and public functions. The closed facades is open up through the extensive use of glass. Internally, three levels of residences were suspended like a standalone piece of furniture in the vast space. The new building beside the factory fits well in scale and appearance with the surroundings, built from yellow masonry with a small scale corresponding to the side street. The residences are organised around a winter garden. The structure and infrastructure are especially designed to enable the dwellings to adapt to changing functions in the future.

Atelier PRO made the design for the new building of the Research Diagnostics Center that is part of the Amsterdam UMC (University Medical Centre). The building with offices and laboratories on the Van der Boechorststraat, is approximately 28,100 m² and is part of a larger, future expansion on the south side of the existing VUmc complex on the Boelelaan in Amsterdam. The building is flexible in design as a future-proof housing for the so-called ‘Adore’ project. ADORE stands for Amsterdam Oncology and Neuroscience Research and encompasses a new way of medical-scientific research in which the use of the synergies between oncological and neuroscientific research is central. In atelier PRO‘s design, the combination of a healing environment, sustainability and flexibility has strongly been emphasised. The building contains two atriums that function as ‘green lungs’: these are tempered outdoor climate zones with indoor gardens, surrounded by clusters of workplaces.

VMBO Veurs, Voorburg a school building that opens up to the neighborhood Veurs is a small-scale secondary school for VMBO-level education which caters to approximately 400 students. In mid-2022, the school moved to a building in the postwar residential area Voorburg ‘t Loo, on the outskirts of The Hague. The new school complex has a clear, compact shape and a facade of traditional brickwork which matches the surrounding buildings. However, what makes it special is that the school also visually and socially engages with its surroundings. On the ground floor there are practical classrooms, but also a teaching restaurant with a visible kitchen, and a ‘training shop’ for people from the neighbourhood, with the aim of showing - both visually and actually - what VMBO education entails.

The British School of Amsterdam a former prison transforming into British School

The British School of Amsterdam (BSA) offers a British international education to 900 children aged from three to 18. The BSA chose to transform a historic penitentiary to house its three scattered schools (Early years, Juniors and Seniors) along with community facilities.

From left to right: The dome. Arched rooms, 6th form common room. Cell Wing, the original narrow galleries have been widened by means of steel insertions in the voids to provide more spacious meeting and traffic areas.

79

The architectural assignment was a challenge. The closed and introverted nature of the prison had to be reconciled with the world-oriented spirit of education. In addition to the 6,762 m² renovation of the municipal monument, 7,361 m² new construction has been added in a harmonious manner. The logistics and routing within the old prison was used as a basis and the new program components were attached to it. Each building section, or wing of the prison, is a specific school. The central hall is the meeting point for everyone, the halls in the wings are used by the different schools.

Rudolf Steiner School & College, Haarlem secondary and primary school form a single unit The new building of the Rudolf Steiner College, together with the adjacent transformed primary school and after-school care facilities, form a new entity in the Schalkwijk district. A transparent connecting section makes it possible for both schools to share functions, which is a basic principle of the Waldorf philosophy. Because the new college had to find a place in the limited space between the existing school and the street, a compact layout was designed in three layers. In the centre of the building there are two large spaces: the main hall and the gymnasium above it. The rest of the programme folds itself around these spaces. Its old building is comprised of various component parts built at different points in time, with a total floor area of around 8,000 square metres. The oldest part, a villa dating back to 1903, is a national monument and has been preserved. The more recent parts, built in the 1930s, 1960s and 1980s, were replaced by new construction. The VCL had drawn up an extensive program of requirements in which they asked for a more practical, compact and accessible building while retaining the identity and positive characteristics of the original school building. Naturally, the identity of the location, integration into the environment, improvement of the indoor climate and sustainability also played a preconditional role.

95

Atelier PRO’s design for IJburg College 2 in Amsterdam was selected as part of a European tender. IJburg College 2 is a new secondary school that will accommodate approximately 900 students at VMBO-T and HAVO levels. The aim is to realise a ‘High Tech Green’ school that fits well with this site. IJburg College’s main school is located on IJburg, in Amsterdam. For its extension, a branch of the school will be built on neighbouring Zeeburgereiland. The school’s site is surrounded by greenery and water, typical for Zeeburgereiland. Atelier PRO’s design comprises a compact building that is adapted closely to the urban design framework. The main concept of the design was developed from a bottom-up approach whereby students, teachers and parents were asked to contribute ideas about the school. This was combined with the school’s vision that the shared floors for practical subjects be placed centrally between two departments to create a meeting point.

Community Centre Waterrijk, Boskoop archetypical barn shape with streamlined details Located on Boomgaard street in Boskoop, the Waterrijk community school houses the Immanuel primary school and Junis Day care Foundation. The school had a unique conception: in a short period of time a team of enthusiastic users, municipality and school committee members and designers conducted a massing study and devised a sketch design – this was used for the tender process. This was a very bold approach for an ambitious project, and the continuation of the process was swift: in 2013 atelier PRO was engaged by the consortium to develop the design. The building opened, according to plan, in June 2015.

Community Centre Geuzenschip, Brielle two primary schools sharing facilities The public Meester Eeuwout school and the Geuzenschip Christian primary school, a municipal heritagelisted building from 1930, were experiencing a shortage of space. The schools are located right beside each other. To address this issue, atelier PRO designed a building that can be shared by both schools. By sharing facilities both schools optimise the use of the available space on the site. The layout of the new building is kept as clear as possible. The extension of Geuzenschip school follows the plan of the existing school with the addition of a wing with a classroom. Shared functions such as the assembly hall and playroom are positioned between both schools.

De Statie, Sas van Gent folded volume provides public space De Statie in Sas van Gent is a multifunctional accommodation. Besides a library, several community facilities and a sports centre, the complex accommodates two primary schools, a childcare centre, playgroup and municipal health service (GGD), and a residential complex of 23 apartments. The shape of this location is rather whimsical, and the complex responds to this shape by means of randomness and plasticity. The building cannot be surveyed at a single glance, due to the angular rotations, overhangs and variety in surfaces.
