The British School of Amsterdam a former prison transforming into British School

The British School of Amsterdam (BSA) offers a British international education to 900 children aged from three to 18. The BSA chose to transform a historic penitentiary to house its three scattered schools (Early years, Juniors and Seniors) along with community facilities. Old situation

The architectural assignment was a challenge. The closed and introverted nature of the prison had to be reconciled with the world-oriented spirit of education. In addition to the 6,762 m² renovation of the municipal monument, 7,361 m² new construction has been added in a harmonious manner. The logistics and routing within the old prison was used as a basis and the new program components were attached to it. Each building section, or wing of the prison, is a specific school. The central hall is the meeting point for everyone, the halls in the wings are used by the different schools.

EMBRACE THE EXISTING The panopticon, the central space, underwent a true transformation. The dome, galleries and clean masonry walls were renovated.

BEFORE REDISCOVER ORIGIN The old concrete 1980s extension on the west side of the jail has given way to an appropriate brick building section that houses the gymnasium. REMEMBERING HISTORY One cell has been preserved as a reminder of the striking history of the building. Presumably this was the cell where, during World War II, resistance fighter Hannie Schaft, also known as “the girl with the red hair, was imprisioned.

REVIVE OLD LOGISTICS

REVEAL AGAIN Over the years, the monument had had various functions and undergone a number of renovations. Many original elements were lost as a result. Yet it turned out that there was still a considerable amount of monumental work to renovate.

Cell wing. The original narrow galleries were less than a meter wide in many places. These have been widened by inserting steel elements into the voids to create more spacious meeting and circulation areas.

BREAKTHROUGH Cells were broken through to create larger teaching spaces. By definition, a prison has a closed and dark character. By adding recognizable new openings in crucial places, we have created an exciting and light learning environment with plenty of contact with the outdoors.

BEFORE BEFORE CAREFUL RESTORATION The interior walls were carefully stripped of various layers of paint. The clean masonry was found to be in deplorable condition and was thoroughly restored to bring it back to its original condition.

Museum infill and restructure of the Allard Pierson institute a hidden gem at the Oude Turfmarkt Atelier PRO designed the new construction and renovation for the Allard Pierson, a monumental university knowledge and heritage institute of the University of Amsterdam. A transparent infill has been realized within the existing building lines. With the transparent new construction made of steel and glass, this ensemble remains legible and the various heights were linked with a new facade. By connecting the new extension space with the existing spaces in the building, a more compact routing through the collection presentations has been created.

The sloping facade bind the various heights of roof and facade levels.

UVA Library of Extraordinary Collections spatial intervention in historic surroundings The library building of the Extraordinary Collection of the University of Amsterdam on the Oude Turfmarkt forms an entrance gateway to a unique collection, which contains one of the centres of medieval literature. The complex is a listed building and is a part of the historical canal-side facade. Research on the development of the historical facade played a role in the concept forming for this library. Despite strict building requirements, atelier PRO saw chance to fit the hefty program in the ancient structures. This design is a breakthrough in a decayed nineteenthcentury building, an existing courtyard could be covered and now serves as an ‘inner street’. Within the very complex context a clear structure has arisen. The gate restored.

A new glass bridge intersects the gate.

One of the reasons for the renovation was to improve the logistical connections. Due to the large distances and many height differences, the building was almost unusable as a library. The solution was found in a breakthrough in a dilapidated nineteenth-century building.

The heavy sheet metal factory before the transformation.

The building has been completely stripped, only the roof and the huge steel gates are preserved. After the transformation the building shows more windows. The original steel trusses and doors have been preserved.

Scheldehof Residential Care Centre old shipyard transformed into residential care centre The monumental Zware Plaatwerkerij (Metal sheet factory) shipyard building in the heart of Vlissingen, and the adjacent site, is transformed into a residential care complex with residences and public functions. The closed facades were open up through the extensive use of glass. Internally, three levels of residences were suspended like a standalone piece of furniture in the vast space. The new building beside the factory fits well in scale and appearance with the surroundings, built from yellow masonry with a small scale corresponding to the side street. The residences are organised around a winter garden. The structure and infrastructure are especially designed to enable the dwellings to adapt to changing functions in the future. 0

Layout versions Atelier PRO developed a size system, with which the three types of care homes can be exchange. The end result is a very beautiful and innovative care facility.

Apartment for somatic patients

The installations are hidden in the paneling of the corridors and can therefore be reached without disturbing the residents.

Living room parcour instead of hallways, with memory walls next to the entrance doors. Here, personal attributes from earlier periodes can be hung. This makes one feel at home and helps when memory is lost. This room is intended to receive guests, to play games and for other sociability

The steel constructions have remained visible. Other visible elements are the huge steel doors, the indoor crane and the roof construction supported by colossal legs with original markings that refer to the past.

The church after the intervention

Multifunctional Community School Huis van de Heuvel a new ensemble Cultural centre Huis van de Heuvel stems from the reshaping and expansion of the exceptional church designed by Granpré Molière; a national monument in ‘De Heuvel’, a reconstruction neighbourhood in Breda. A part of the programme is formed by an MFA with a catholic and public primary school, a gymnastics hall, an extensive social cultural centre with an open house, a community worker, a youth health centre, a playgroup, a day care centre and after- school care. The existing garden between the church and the new build has been used as the connecting link, providing a winter garden and courtyard. Church by Granpré Molière restored

Theater De NWE Vorst, Tilburg the artistic living room of Tilburg This building has been restored, redecorated in the distinguished atmosphere of the nineteenth century and expanded with new buildings by atelier PRO. Now it is a large urban building with an attractive and representative appearance: a cultural center. Theater The NWE Vorst uses the building intensively. A building where you can see everything on stage, where you can dine, where you can take workshops and where you can have a drink.

Police Academy Apeldoorn winner Gulden Feniks price 2011 The rehousing of the Police Academy’s Group Location consists of the restoration and renovation of a former preparatory seminary dating from 1935 (national monument, architect Jan van Hardeveld). The new addition accommodates the fixed and free design of an open learning centre according to ‘The new world of working’, a restaurant and congress divisions. The surrounding area has been re-organized with a new parking facility and has been designed in cooperation with landscape architects.

Academy Building Leiden University the oldest building and the centre of Leiden University The Academy Building is the most representative ceremonial building of the Leiden University. In addition to the complete restoration and renovation of this national monument, a few new alterations have been executed. For instance, the routing has been improved with a new stairwell and lift, and a roof has been placed over the inner courtyard. New facilities have been given their own site and the interior has gained a new style that does justice to the monument and the University’s ambitions.

transformation of a former office building into homes Atelier PRO provided aesthetic advice for a transformation project at the Koningin Sophiestraat in The Hague. Local and Trebbe transformd a former office building into 69 free-sector rental apartments averaging 87m² in the mid-market segment. The building is fitted with new window frames, balconies, rising points and an elegant top. Atelier PRO has added an extra layer to the existing façade repertoire by realizing an aluminum cladding in the rhythm of the original design. Outdoor spaces are realized by connecting balconies seamlessly to the characteristic prefab elements. Maximum living comfort and respect for the original design were important starting points for this special project.

transformation of a church into modern apartments The Ludgerhof project in Lichtenvoorde meant the retention of a green location in the village, including the former Ludgerkerk (church) and the walled courtyard around it. This building project was possible by adding two-times eight very spacious houses between the church wall and the court wall, atelier PRO transformed this exceptional church into a special type of living with respect for the original structure, turning the church space into a square and the wooden inner wall into an outer wall.

Atelier PRO office, Den Haag housing subtly fitted in dune garden Atelier PRO has been located at the Kerkhoflaan in The Hague since 1976. What started as a small group of enthusiastic professionals has grown over the years into an architectural office of fifty ambitious professionals. Due to the organic growth of the office, its accommodation has expanded over the years. At every extension, we were inspired by the strength of the location with respect for the dune environment. This idea of ‘genus loci’ lies at the basis of all design solutions of our architects. Our own office is a prime example of this.

Kantoor EDGE Stadium, Amsterdam large-scale renovation and extension of an existing building from 2000, also designed by PRO In the autumn of 2020, the tenant moved out of the Forum office building, which was designed by atelier PRO twenty years ago. The characteristic building, at the time already progressive in terms of sustainability, is fully adapted to the current requirements of office use and expanded with additional office space. The main design of the building is formed by two long office wings with a central zone. This middle zone consists of two transparent building volumes on the north and south side with a large atrium in between. The atrium was given a completely new look and refurbished as a central space with facilities for future tenants. The new attractive entrance on Roeskestraat is part of the largely transparent volume into which the original, copper-clad heart-shaped pavilion, is integrated. While retaining elements that have defined the building’s architecture over the past 20 years, this building will once again be a high-quality addition to the neighborhood and the future ambitious of Amsterdam’s Zuidas district.

Renovation of ING Maple, Amsterdam a second life for an office building from the eighties With the ‘Maple’ building on Bijlmerdreef in Amsterdam Zuidoost, atelier PRO transformed a dated office from the 1980s into a high-end workspace for ING. The redevelopment is part of the larger urban development of the area into innovation district Cumulus Park. Based on atelier PRO’s design, the rectangular office building was demolished right down to the main loadbearing structure and given an entirely new façade - which had a positive impact on the surrounding neighbourhood. On the inside, the cellular office has given way to an open layout, offering teams the opportunity to work together extensively. Besides being responsible for the building’s renovation, atelier PRO also developed the design of the entire fitout and furnishings.

Rudolf Steiner School & College, Haarlem

metamorphosis for a school building from the 1960s In Schalkwijk in Haarlem, a school building from the 1960s has been transformed into a primary school and after-school care centre. Together with the new secondary school built next door, it forms a new entity: Rudolf Steiner School and College. A transparent connecting section makes it possible to share functions. For the school, an important starting point was to make the best possible use of the structure of the existing building; modifications would be difficult and costly. In line with the philosophy of the Waldorf schools, however, there was a need to break through the rigid corridor structure and give the school a heart. Therefore, the entrance was moved to the mid corner of the building, where space was created for a large reception area, adjacent to the media library and the kitchen. A new staircase and lift give quick access to the 1st floor.

Renewal and interior design of Anthura, Bleiswijk headquarters for breeder of Anthurium and Orchids Renewal and interior design of the head office of Anthura B.V., breeder of Anthurium and Orchids. The project comprises the design of a new contemporary working, meeting and reception environment. The support of the existing building is reused and the office has a totally new facade and layout. The large greenhouse complex is now part of the reception and meeting environment, representing the strong identity of the company and offering a glimpse behind the scenes.

Lumion, Amsterdam brutalist monument gets a fresh start Lumion is a secondary school for general, higher and pre-university education. The school is housed at Vlaardingenlaan 25 in Amsterdam. Use is made of parts of the monumental school building on the site. It is one of the youngest monuments in New West, and was built in 1973 to a design by architect J.B. Press. The brutalist building is characterized by the use of concrete, glass and large cantilevers. The senior grade has been realized in the renovated monument, the junior grade has been given a completely new building component that is connected to the monument through a transparent central hall. A new sports hall has also been realized on site. Lumion is the first partner of Kunskapsskolan Netherland. A walkway connects the new building with the villa

The Vrijzinnig Christelijk Lyceum (VCL) is an independent school for senior general secondary education and pre-university education. Its old building is comprised of various component parts built at different points in time, with a total floor area of around 8,000 square metres. The oldest part, a villa dating back to 1903, is a national monument and has been preserved. The more recent parts, built in the 1930s, 1960s and 1980s, were replaced by new construction. The VCL had drawn up an extensive program of requirements in which they asked for a more practical, compact and accessible building while retaining the identity and positive characteristics of the original school building. Naturally, the identity of the location, integration into the environment, improvement of the indoor climate and sustainability also played a preconditional role.

the new way of waiting next to the new way of working Atelier PRO was responsible for the renovation and restoration of the monumental parts of the new city hall. We brought back as much as possible the old glory of the rooms and offices in these historical parts and have further strengthened them by creatively using color. The rooms have been carefully decorated with both antique and contemporary elements, incorporating the latest technology. These new additions fit nicely and naturally in the historical character. Our design is focused on the possibility of making choices and the extent of making adjustments. The tables can be used multi-purpose and can easily be adjusted in a large conference table set-up or divided into separate parts for smaller conversations. But also as a visitor you can choose options. Do you have to get your passport? Then you take a seat on a wooden bench. However, in preparation of a long appointment, you can withdraw into a quiet corner. We have called this concept ‘The New Waiting’. Vakcollege Eindhoven & Aloyisius De Roosten Mavo, Eindhoven renovation and new construction Formerly called the Tweede Technische School, this striking building from the post-war reconstruction era on Eindhoven‘s ring road is visible from quite some distance away. As you get closer, you see two prominent new structures ‚peeking out‘ from either side of the classic four-storey building, heightening your curiosity about what is going on behind the high-rise block. The challenge was to house two secondary schools in an existing school complex with additional new construction, whilst preserving the unique identity of each: junior general secondary school Aloysius de Roosten & vocational school Vakcollege Eindhoven.

Admiraal de Ruyter Hospital, Vlissingen Rescaling And Renovation leads to new perspective Since the Admiraal de Ruyter Hospital in Vlissingen no longer met current standards and was too large to exploit, atelier PRO was asked to design a renovation with partial new construction. Greenery and an abundance of daylight characterise the design. These essentials add to an optimal stay and to a wellfunctioning transparent building for patients, visitors and personnel. The revitalisation was financed through crowd funding.

Kloppend Hart, Warmond a wooden wave in a lush green setting combining old and new Het Kloppend Hart is a combination of the existing meeting center in Warmond and three primary schools and a playgroup. Atelier PRO devised a surprising and successful scheme to combine the functions, opening up the existing building and adding a distinctive new section. Old and new come together in a large central space, the heart of the building. As a multipurpose space it easily accommodates different functions, for instance, from meeting to learning and playing. In the existing community centre, the interventions are limited but carefully focused. The narrow foyer is widened and the accessibility and appearance of the rooms are improved. Additionally the building was adapted, as much as possible, to be shared with the schools. In this way, the schools can enjoy the facilities of the renovated library and craft room.

Completed in 2005, the Prinsenhof is a metropolitan, multipurpose building located in het Beatrixkwartier, The Hague. Ten years after the completion the original tenants left, relocated or downsized. Owner Bouwinvest and property manager CBRE commissioned atelier PRO to completely transform one vacant office floor in Tower C in one season, within a specified budget. The aim of the transformation was to create a modern ‘floor model’ in order to show contemporary companies how this modern space can be used.

To make use of the spatial quality of the vacant rentable floors as best as possible, atelier PRO has adapted the first layout with the clearest logistics, the best orientation, and the most beautiful light. With the resources that the method of Activity Based Working provided, the space is divided into several working and meeting spaces.

Redevelopment WTC The Hague reorganisation of the plaza

The Hague has had its own World Trade Centre since June 2012 and a new designated function has been the motive for an architectural transformation. The public spaces in the WTC Plaza and Convention Centre are upgraded to the quality standards of an international WTC. That’s why the owner Bouwinvest consulted atelier PRO and Sens Real Estate. An important part of the assignment lied in the redesign of the existing property. We (re)developed a relatively young building that is in full use.

Edith Stein College Den Haag estate in the centre of The Hague Atelier PRO’s design of the Edith Stein College offers both a familiar and dynamic learning environment for students. The stately and compact high school building is being built at the end of the Louis Couperusplein in the inner city of The Hague. The site will accommodate space for sport, games, gardening, green areas, and outdoor education. Initial research revealed that situating the sports hall underground would result in the most compact construction volume. This enables the sports hall to be completely integrated with the new building and simultaneously frees up more ground space for outdoor activities. The roof of the sports hall then becomes a podium to stack the different school departments above. On each floor, these departments are connected with the most prominent space and new heart of the school: the assembly hall.

Atelier PRO was proud to complete the renovations of the Metis Montessori Lyceum in 2013. Full of character, the former Hoogere Burgerschool (HBS) in Amsterdam Oost looks forward to a bright new future ahead. Located on the edge of Oosterpark, the robust building from 1904 appears brand new again from the inside, and majestic and stylish from the outside. It’s a place full of memories, where students will prepare for their upcoming journeys ahead. Internally, atelier PRO introduced an open learning hub to interrupt the rigid rhythm of the building’s traditional layout and classrooms. Now, corridors always view into the hub. Structural walls from several classrooms were transformed with arched openings to connect with the corridor and create one joined space with an interesting spatial dynamic. Students can work according to the Montessori principles doing individual or group work in a lounge, quiet space of meeting area.

New school 2014-2016 Due to an increasing number of pupils, the Montessori School Amsterdam needed more educational space. That is why atelier PRO created a school design for an extension that fully meets the criteria of contemporary school requirements. The new building fits seamlessly into the historic Oosterpark and at the same time the interior makes personalized learning possible.

Two primary schools located in the centre of Brielle were experiencing a shortage of space: the public Meester Eeuwout school and the Geuzenschip Christian primary school, a municipal heritage-listed building from 1930. The schools are located right beside each other. To address this issue, atelier PRO designed a building that can be shared by both schools. By sharing facilities both schools optimise the use of the available space on the site. During the renovation of the school building dated from 1931 with 6 classrooms, the original identity has been restored. Lowered system ceilings and partition walls have been removed and characteristic elements have been restored, where possible, or reduced, in close consultation with the Monument Conservation Department. The recesses in the hallway have been restored and allow daylight in again. They are used as a wardrobe and extra study places. Much effort has been made to put installations out of sight.

Raadhuis Ede

herinrichting financiert zichzelf door meer efficiënt ruimtegebruik The basis of the design is formed by the culture change process of the municipality of Ede. To support this process, the offices of the current town hall, designed by architectural firm Broekbakema in 1977, will be redeveloped. This new interior supports and strengthens the following issues: Ede’s position as a ‘Green, Sound and Active’ municipality; the core values of the organization: Confidence, Responsibility and Transparency; and the theme ‘The New World of Work’. We have examined the existing building and the possibilities it offers. Ede’s town hall is an elongated building varying from 2 to 4 storeys high, and built up in 4 volumes which are interrupted by central stairwells. The routing through the existing building has been transferred from a central passage with rooms on both sides, to open spaces with the walking route alongside the facade: an asymmetric corridor creating differentiations in the area, and making it possible to have more tranquil working places at the opposite facade.

Canadian Embassy, The Hague diplomatieke transparantie The Canadian Embassy in The Hague has been substantially renovated and expanded. The existing building from 1955 is located in The Hague in the midst of historic construction. This neighborhood is characterized by 19th century white villas in the Palladian style and is spacious situated in the green with Horse Chestnuts planted around two main axes. The Canadian Embassy engages with the villas of Palladio in its architecture, but the style is more related to that of U.S. government buildings. On the street side the building is executed in natural stone, unlike the 19th century plastered neighboring buildings. The two-layered volume, coated with French limestone, rests upon a plinth of granite. The glass walkway shields the inner garden, creating a sheltered spot

De Meerpaal, Dronten een nieuw leven voor van Klingeren’s manifest De Meerpaal in Dronten is the built manifesto with which the architect Frank van Klingeren took up a stance in the 1960s against the overweening division into functions in the design practice of those days. He not only brought together widely diverse activities in a single building, but refrained from separating them there. In atelier PRO’s winning design, which opts for recycling instead of demolition and new-build, De Meerpaal survives as a monument of Dutch architecture from the second half of the 20th century, be it modified to suit the current urban context and geared to present-day use. In planning terms the complex and the current urban plaza are welded into a whole: the jutting awning makes the building part of the plaza while the plaza for its part penetrates the building with one of its elevations. The pay-off is a roofed urban plaza behind a glazed wall which can be slid open during fine weather. On the urban front the plaza is brought back into prominence by the new fly tower.
