NightForce 42x44 Fixed-Power Scope:

A First Look by Rodney Brown

Optics for benchrest shooting have a tough role to fill. We really have just a few basic requirements: granite-stable aiming and crystal clarity in a high-magnification, weightless package…and it should look good. Nightforce has a legendary reputation for granite-stable aiming and crystal clarity. Their older 8x32 and 12x42 Benchrest scopes and the new 15x55 Competition scope have firmly proven that. Now they have brought that reputation to bear on the weight issue. The new 42X fixed power scope is purpose built for the varmint class benchrest community where weight limits dictate accessories. I’ve had this new scope on my Light Varmint gun for a couple weekends of competition now and it’s time for a first look review. Using this scope I was able to still make weight with a 5# 5oz Heavy Varmint barrel. The specification says 20.7 ounces; my postal scale flashed 20.9 ounces and virtually identical to both my Leupold 45X and my Marsh 50X. There are two reticules available: a fine crosshair and a crosshair with a 3/32 dot. My scope has the dot

which to my eyes appears to cover about a ¼ of a 6mm bullet hole at 100 yards and ½ a hole at 200 yards. While I’ve shot a fine crosshair most of the last 10 years, I’m finding the small dot a bit quicker to place back on my aim point. One point of concern compared to my other scopes was the 44mm front objective lens. The role of the large front lens is to gather light and being the smallest of my 3 fixed competition scopes, I was impressed to see that it is possibly the brightest of the three. The technology of ED (Extralow Dispersion) glass has come to us from the world of high-end photography and definitely enhances our ability to see. Shooting on a rainy, dark gray, overcast day presented no issues at all and the consensus of all the competitors who looked through it was that it had the brightest sight picture of all the scopes on the line. The most important quality in benchrest optics is the ability to hold a consistent aim point. A .01 MOA reticule drift issue can cause shot dispersion that is the difference between a .22 agg that wins and a .23 agg that finishes just out of the wood. This is

also the hardest aspect of our optic packages to evaluate. Conditions and gun tuning have a substantially larger impact on our bullet placement and I’m not going to pretend that I can shoot well enough in a couple of matches to discern any problems in this area. I’m just going to trust the Nightforce reputation for rugged reliability here. Good looks are rounded out with nicely engraved turrets that feature large, easy to read, white lettering. The side parallax turret has hash marks but is not marked with any distance information. That has never been particularly necessary or accurate so no loss there. I found the parallax adjustment to be extremely stable in the matches I’ve shot so far. Once set, the parallax stability has been rock-solid throughout the day of competition. All in all, I’m very impressed with this scope as have been the other shooters that have looked through it. I sincerely applaud Nightforce for both their support of NBRSA competitions and their decision to build a top quality product specifically for our short-range game.

WWCCA’s Spring Tune Up

By Bill Gammon April 16-17, 2016 Weather was 32F at night and 65 in the daytime. The grounds crew really did their job and the place looked immaculate. Over the winter, the moving backers were replaced with new painted replacement boards which were then, with new pipe, assembled and ready to hang. This has to be one of the premiere clubs in the USA, with over a 1,000 members, a 25yd, 50yd, 100yd, 200yd, moving plate 25yd, airgun, trap fields, skeet fields, archery and 2 black powder fields along with camping. All of this located in the middle of Plymouth

Michigan and all of the fields able to work at the same time. The Saturday supper was cook-your-own streaks for $12.00 and they supply all of the fixings. The next match is a pig roast, do not know how much, and a TEXAS BBQ on the third match, again do not know much. The club is open on Friday nights for happy hour, which lasts from 6pm until whenever. But enough of the range. For the first match in the Eastern Region, it was sunny, warm and perfect. All of the usual shooters were here, plus some more new people. Jeff Gaidos started off in the LV with a .1804 agg with Joe Krupa at a .1886 and Don Rosette with a .2032. Small

group was a .113 by, guess who? Jeff Gaidos. In the HV, again it was Jeff with a .1668 agg and Joe with .2064 agg and Don with a .2208, is this getting repetitious ? And in the HV Victor Potts with an even nicer .075. Now we move out into no man’s land, the 200yd, on Sunday. You are not going to believe who came in first at HV. Jeff Gaidos, (me thinks that I will put that name on my WORD speed thingy), with a .2238, second, was Dale Dillingham, from Indiana, at least I can spell the State, with a very respectable.2328, and Joey Krupa with a .2342.. That gave the HV grand as follows, Jeff Gaidos (it is obvious I have not figured out the WORD thingy yet), a .1953 grand agg, Joe Krupa with .2203 and third Dale Dillingham, .2327. Small group, a .266 shot by Stan Buchtel. On to the LV stage of the 200yd, Jack Neary won with a .1984, Jerry Jarrett a .2169 and Joe Krupa with a .2171, which gave the LV grand like this: Joey Krupa .2029, second was what’s his name again? Jeff Gaidos with a .2159 and third, Jack Neary .2315. Small group was a .254 shot by one of our Canadian friends, Rob MacLennan. The Two Gun read: Jeff Gaidos in first with a .2056, fol-

lowed by Joe Krupa .2116 and Don Rosette third with a .2446. Comments, according to all of the competitors there the weather could not have been more perfect. The match, under the direction of Dana Raven, could not have been held better. Everything was good. Just as a matter of interest, Dana has a 3 ½ hour trip and when he found out that he was going to be short one target crew, he called his wife and she traveled the 3 ½ hours to be on the target crew. The shooters at WWCCA are very grateful for their efforts. In the Photo p.6 from left: Dale Dillingham, Stan Buchtel, Joe Krupa, Jeff Gaidos, Don Rosette & Victor Potts. Texas NBRSA matches are notorious for dry heat and high wind. For the fourth year in a row “Climate Change” strikes and we have low temps and record rain! Saturday we escaped the rains but wind was the dominant factor after the first two targets were pulled. But by this time, Charles Huckeba had already established a lead in the Unlimited with triple threes and could not be tracked down by John Horn or Gary Bristow who managed .2 and .3 on the last two matches. With a change of gun, John pulled out a new Heavy Varmint and destroyed the competition with a barrage of .2 and .3’s at 200 yards. He was untouchable. Sunday started off with a BANG. Multiple match delays due to lighting just sitting on top of the field and a string of storms across Texas which lead to record rain fall in Houston and 5 inches in Denton. The benches remained dry but boots were required if you were on bench 13 through 20 due to the small river which formed and pushed out into the flags. Gary pulled a solid win on the Light Varmint and several small groups, but John Horn dominated the four gun with two wins and two second place finishes. Lewis Clark Wildlife Club’s Hunter Match

April 24, 2016 by Glenn Sampson We had our first hunter match of the year with a very respectable turn out. We had one first-time shooter who shot VFS and turned in a respectable score. Sixteen year old Hannah Cripe also took a liking to match director Paul Gylling and dubbed him FOREST GUMP. The two bantered back and forth all day entertaining all of us. When the dust finally settled after 200 yards the scores were as follows. Thanks to everyone who participated. In the photo from left: Larry Tucker, Jeff Jetter, Glenn Sampson Dick Mayer, Sam Small.

Frosty and cool to start off Saturday, but as it warmed up, so did the wind. The fast, switchy conditions really held the scores down. Ron Shultz in Hunter and Sam Langhofer in VFS were the only ones that managed to stay clean at 100 yards. At 200 yards, it got even spookier. The mirage joined in with the wind. Jason Stanley held his own winning the yardage in Hunter Class and Chet Whitebread grabbed the VFS 200. Sunday morning was somewhat warmer with no frost. The winds had changed overnight from the northwest to the south and were much stronger and fast-switching. Tri-Cities MSA Hunter Match

by Rick DeGroat Eight shooters showed up for our first registered match of the year on March 26, 2016. It was a beautiful spring day with warm temperatures and of course, the switching winds, mirage as well as the bullet swating troll that lives in the creek bed between the 100 and 200 yard lines. We lovingly call it the troll in the hole. As usual in the South East desert of Washington state, we worked hard for our low scores...

VFS 4/23/16 Hunter 4/24/16 By Howard Bloom Swishing winds make for a tough two days for the shooters, but it didn't stop Keith Myers from taking everything. On Sunday Dave shot a 250-14X. Nice shooting Dave and Keith. This was not a good turnout; we’re trying to keep the VFS & Hunter matches going and we need more shooters. If you shot the matches before try and come back out. Ouachita Sportsman’s April SP-UNL Match

By Ray Porter It was a beautiful weekend with very mild winds‌that switched violently every 10 seconds. We fought for last place. In the Sporter 200 after four targets, seven of us were separated by .050 of an inch. I shot nearly an inch group and everyone else shot far bigger than I (to hand me a win in SP200.) Richard Watson placed first at SP100 and the Grand, while Matt Owens won the UNL100. Joe Hargadine then took over and won the UNL200, UNL Grand and ultimately the Two Gun. Council Bluffs Mid-States Shootout Leg 1,

The first leg of the Mid-States Shootout was contested on April 23-34 at the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rifle and Pistol Club. A record turnout of 32 shooters was on hand April 23 for the 100- and 200-yard Heavy Varmint group match. Always a tricky range, the forecast for Saturday called for sunny skies and brisk south wind with gusts up to 30 mph. For a change, the forecast was pretty much on the money. At 100 yards, Ron Miller walked away from the competition with a fine .2270 aggregate shooting a new Lederer barrel. Chet Whitebread, also campaigning a Lederer barrel, was second with a flat .2500 agg. in tricky wind conditions. Third was Richard Brensing with a .2696 agg. followed by Sam Langhofer with a .2828 agg. Mike Bigelow was fifth with a .2878 agg. Rounding out the top ten at 100 yards were Kurtis Brown, .2984; Don Crunk, .3180; Jeff Shultz, .3234; Zach Miller, .3356; and Paul Whitmore,.3486. Mike Bigelow had the small group with a fine .109 in some tough conditions. When the targets were moved out to 200 yards, groups reflected the strong, switchy winds. Dee Myers showed his command of the conditions with a .4051 winning agg. Second was Don Crunk at .4094, and third place went

to Howard Cowher with a .4484. Jon Leu was in fourth place with a .4593, and Chet Whitebread was fifth with a .4625. Rounding out the top 10 at 200 yards were Mike Shapoval, .4738; Mark Thompson, .4848; Kurtis Brown, .4862; Dave Brooks, .4995; and Richard Brensing, .5012. David Halblom Sr. shot the small group at 200 yards with a .439. At the end of the day, the grand aggregate winner was Chet Whitebread with a .3562. Second place in the grand went to Don Crunk with a .3637, and Ron Miller was third with a .3759. Richard Brensing was fourth with a .3854, and Dee Myers was fifth with a .3864. Rounding out the top ten were Kurtis Brown, .3923; Mike Bigelow, .4105; Sam Langhofer, .4131; Jeff Shultz, .4357; and Paul Whitmore, .4503. The 31 competitors who contested Sunday's Varmint For Score match were plagued by thunderstorms early and strong, gusty winds all day. At 100 yards, Richard Brensing shot a fine 250-19X to capture first place. Second was Bill Vanosdel with a 250-17X. Third place went to Sam Langhofer with a 250-16X. Kurt Van Wyk's 25016X took fourth-place honors, and Jeff Shultz had a 250-15X for fifth place. Rounding out the top ten were Howard Cowher, 250-15X; David Halblom Sr., 250-14X; Dee

Myers, 250-13X; Dave Brooks, 2509X; and Mike Shapoval, 249-14X. When the targets were moved up the hill to 200 yards, Jason Stanley led the pack with a 247-5X in tough conditions. Ronnie Berg was close on Stanley's heels with a 246-4X. Third place went to Jim Franzen with a 246-3X, Sam Langhofer was fourth with a 245-5X, and Jeff Shultz was fifth with a 245-2X. Rounding out the top ten at 200 yards were Howard Cowher, 244-4X; Mike Bigelow, 2441X; Dee Myers, 243-4X; Kurt Van Wyk, 243-3X; and Bill Vanosdel, 243-1X. Sam Langhofer parlayed a 25016X at 100 yards and a 245-5X at 200 yards for a 495-21X and the VFS win. Jeff Shultz was second with a495-17X, and Ronnie Berg was third with a 495-12X. Fourth place went to Jim Franzen with a 495-12X, with Howard Cowher fifth with a 494-19X. April at Sahuaro: They Call the Wind Mariah by Dale Arenson

Remember that song from the sixties, "They Call the Wind Mariah"? That is what was going through my head when we were shooting in April at the Three Points Range in Southern Arizona; except, I was re-wording it to use the word “Pariah. Okay, well maybe not quite a pariah, but certainly a nuisance. Yeah, I know, Tony Boyer says ''The wind is my friend'' and there again, I kept thinking, 'with friends like this'.. Part of the problem is the ravine that drops down about 80 yards from the shooting line, which precludes the possibility of wind flags for the first 500 yards. So, to speak graciously, shooting at the Sahuaro range can be ''challenging''. The weather channel app on my phone predicted 6 mph winds until about 2:00 PM, but we knew better than to rely on that. Sure enough, by the time we starting pulling triggers at 8:00 AM, it was not bad at 8 to 12 mph and although twitchy, the morning crew did a good job. Light Gun turned out to be the Mike Billotte show, with Steve Everson as his co-host. In spite of the wind, light gun shooters put in 13 sub-MOA groups, just

over half. The three top light gun shooters, Mike, Steve and John Benz, shot all sub-MOA groups. Interestingly both Mike and Steve shot six, seven and eight inch groups, but Mike's winning aggregate of 7.17'' was just a half inch smaller than Steve's. Light Gun Score was almost a photo finish between Mike and Steve. They both dropped only 10 points, with each shooting 140's, but Mike was able to stick his nose across the wire with his two X's, winning for Score also. Both small individual group and high score in light gun, again went to Mike with a 6.375'' and a 49-X. Steve was right behind him with a 6.93'' and a 49, no X. The wind continued its assault, in the second relay, increasing in velocity and rapid direction changes, and it just got worse for relays three and four. There were only four sub-MOA groups shot in Heavy and John Benz had two of them, handily winning for Heavy Aggregate with a 10.3125'' Shooting in the afternoon hurricane, Jeff Billotte was second with a 12.60''. Jeff was the only one shooting in relay four that did not have some shots off target. Steve Everson prevailed in Heavy Gun Score with a very nice 274-

2X, (in those conditions), He also turned in the highest single target of 93-3X. Group winner, John Benz was right behind him with a 270-1X. In between the occasional dust devils, Dale Arenson shot the smallest group in Heavy with a 6.75'', or maybe it was during the calmer, eye of the hurricane. If you check the equipment list, the star of the day seemed to be the 7mm Short Action Ultra Mag, since that is what Mike was shooting in Light Gun and John in Heavy. Also they were both using BAT actions and Krieger barrels. And the Berger 180 did a good job for both of them, plus for Steve Everson in Heavy Gun with another Krieger barrel there too. I suppose I am going to have to build another gun now. Another match in the bag, I was able to shoot it with my arm in a brace due to a little recent surgery, I was amazed at how the other shooters on the line, especially top shooter Ross Herrick, pitched in to help me carry my heavy gear up the hill to the shooting line, and back down again. I kept thinking; what a great bunch of guys...even if I wasn't shooting, I'd still want to come by every month just to hang

out with them. But hoping for a trophy once in a while is just too good an excuse. There is always room for more if you want to come and join us on the second Saturday of every month. Put your loads together and put the date on your calendar. I was thinking of writing a book about shooting in the wind, but it turns out that the simple advice of ''Don't do it'', is not enough to get it published. Sloughhouse Benchrest Shooters

The weather was nice with a high of 80F for this April 2-3 match. On Saturday we had a nice lunch with Stu Harvey, as he is retiring from over 50 years of benchrest shooting. Throughout his shooting career, he also was a gunsmith and world record holder and participated in both long and short range benchrest as well as black powder silhouette. We hope Stu comes by to visit often. We will miss him at the matches. By Dan Lutke In the photo above from left: Pete Kitrinos, Dan Lutke, Greg Wilson, Ron Pepper, Bob Dorton & Robert Wademan. Southwest Louisiana Rifle & Pistol Club’s April VFS Match Results

Eleven of us Texans ventured over east of the Sabine River and did battle with the "ragin Cajuns" at the South West Louisianna Rifle

and Pistol Club for their Registered NBRSA VFS 100-200 Yard Match. The conditions were brutal. By the first match at 9:00 am, the winds were already coming in at 15+ mph and only got worse as the day progressed. This was one of those

days that had you fearing to look through the scope after each shot. Here are the results. Thanks to Mike and Francis as Match Director and Range Officer for getting it all done. At least it didn't rain. by Jackie Schmidt 100-Yards Jackie Schmidt............ 250-18X Dwayne Pullum..............250-18X Clayton Grey.................250-14X Lou Rathoe...................250-12X Bobby Ayo....................250-12X High Score Jackie Schmidt................ 18X 200-Yards Jackie Schmidt............. 250-7X Larry Tilley................... 244-5X Gardner Rose................ 243-5X Richard Pullum.............. 242-1X Renard Alexander........... 241-5X High Score Bobby Ayo....................... 8X

2016 NBRSA Long Range Nationals Rogue Valley Shooting Sports Association (RVSSA) by Phil Grammatica

NBRSA 600 Yard Nationals The 600-yard national competition began Sunday, April 17 and lasted until Tuesday, April 19. As the 46 Competitors from all over the country entered the Historic Camp White Rifle Range, all were greeted by mostly clear weather with temperatures ranging from 44F in the morning to a high of 90F. This was truly appreciated by the competitors traveling from the snow covered States. Not so appreciative were those who had loaded for much colder weather. The event consisted of 2 Light Gun and 2 Heavy Gun match targets with 4 relays each day. On average, over the first two days, the wind was variable between 3 to 5 mph. The wind on the third day was not so kind running between 6 to 12 mph gusting to 16 mph. As the event unfolded, Richard Sulffridge won the Light Gun score with 276-1X after 6 targets and 30 shots fired. (Light Gun competition involves 5 shots fired per target for From Top: Bill Hubina Bill Johnston Robert Hoppe

a total of 30 per discipline, while Heavy Gun includes 10 shots fired per target for a total of 60 shots.) Onward to the Light Gun Group competition and Curt Mendenhall bested the 46 and won with an aggregate of 2.1283. Moving forward to the Heavy Guns, Richard Duncan stepped up to win the Heavy Gun Score with a 561-9X and Bill Johnston took his turn for the win with the Heavy Gun Group aggregate of 3.5807. The 600 Yard competition ended with a potential World Record in Heavy Gun 6 Target Score shot by Richard Duncan. Richard continued his winning by placing first in Two Gun Score with 832-11X while Bill Johnston won the Two Gun Group aggregate with 2.9705. At the conclusion of the 600 yard competition, the cream rose to the top and Curt Mendenhall surfaced as the 2016 600 Yard Long Range Nationals Champion with 19 points. Congratulations Curt!

NBRSA 1000 Yard Nationals

The 1000 Yard Competition was held April 20-21 and 33 contenders from all over the country were again greeted by mostly clear weather with temperatures ranging from 56⁰ in the morning to a high of 78⁰. The 1000 Yard Nationals, conducted over 2 days consisted of 3 Light Gun and 3 Heavy Gun match targets with 3 relays of 11 competitors each day. The first day’s wind was variable between 5 to 12 mph gusting to 16 mph with one gust lifting canopies off the ground at the firing-line and over the shooters heads. The third relay was also delayed due to a small herd of cows occupying the 900 yard berm one of whose posterior became partially visible in one competitors scope picture. This required Blinky (William Hubina) and Phil G to play cowboy to per-

suade said small herd of cows off of the 900 yard berm—YAHOO! The first day also included local Ch 12 TV coverage which brought spectators to the second day event (see photo). The second day brought winds constant 5 -6 mph with east to west or west to east direction and variable gusts of 14 mph. Bill Johnston busted through with the Light Gun Score first place with a 288-6X while Richard Sulffridge took his turn winning the Light Gun Group with 4.1915”. Along came Jeffery Whitt to win the Heavy Gun Score with 568-5X and back in action was Bill Johnston with the Heavy Gun Group win with a 6.0650” aggregate. The Two Guns were dominated by Bill Johnston who won both with a 847-9X for Two Gun Score and 5.4875” for Two Gun Group. Ultimately, Bill Johnston took the Championship as both the 1000-Yard Champion and Grand Champion. Congratulations Bill! The competition ended with 2 potential World Records in Light Gun Group and Two Gun Group. 1000-Yard Results Light Gun Score Bill Johnston................ 288-6X Richard Duncan.............. 273-1X Robert Hoppe............... 272-2X Fred Thruman............... 271-1X Richard Jette................ 267-1X Jeffery Whitt................ 266-2X Richard Sulffridge........... 266-0X William Hubina.............. 263-1X Raymond Garric............. 263-0X Curt Mendenhall............. 261-3X High Score Robert Hoppe................. 50-2X Light Gun Group Richard Sulffridge.......... 4.1915 Bill Johnston................. 4.9100 Robert Hoppe............... 5.7033 Richard Jette................ 6.3138 Katlin Sulffridge............. 6.4218 Curt Mendenhall............. 6.6963 William Hubina.............. 6.8500 Terry Balding ................ 7.2413 Richard Schatz............... 7.3393 Jeffery Whitt................ 7.3758

2016 Hog Roast hosted by Fairchance Gun Club

April 30-May 1, 2016 Ninety shooters arrived in Fairchance, PA, on April 30 to compete at one of the NBRSA’s largest matches in the Eastern Region; the annual Hog Roast. Back in January, the Eastern Region and the entire benchrest shooting community lost a great family man, true gentlemen, top competitor and renown bullet maker; Lowell Hottenstein. Bill Reahard, the Hog Roast Match Director and trusty long-time assistant/Rangemaster, Jerry Van Sickle, both sought fitting to honor Lowell’s memory by dedicating this year’s Hog Roast to Lowell and his family. We were very fortunate to have Lowell’s wife, Barb and his son, Ken join the Hog Roast festivities this past weekend! It was great to see them both again and I know they both had a great time visiting with all their dear benchrest friends. This year’s Hog Roast was also the second US World Team qualifying match of the year, which brought many WBC hopefuls to

the Fairchance Rod and Gun Club to gain the points necessary to earn a coveted place on the US World Team. On to our match…Saturday morning we began with the HV100. Spring rains were with us on Saturday and most of the weekend along with tricky switching winds. The Master, Tony Boyer took first place with a very fine .1660 .agg, followed by Wayne Cambell in a close second with a great .1692 .agg. It was good to have Allen Arnette back shooting with us and was right up to par with a .1972 for third place, Andy Shifflet (Little Trump) came out of his winter hibernation with a fourth place finish with a solid .2108 .agg. Always a top shooter, Dale Boop finished fifth in the HV100 .agg with a fine .2152 .agg. Well done, guys! After a great lunch of pulledpork, burgers and dogs, we were met with ripening winds for the start of the LV100 agg. Wayne Campbell continued to roll with his winning ways, as he took

first place in the LV100 with another very fine .1612 .agg! Consistent top performer, Don Powell finished second with a great .1688 .agg. Top shooting Bill McIntyre finished third with a .1838 agg. All the way from Kansas City, former U.S. WBC team member, Don Creech submitted a nice .1896 .agg for fourth and future HOF member, Kevin Donaldson, Jr. took fifth place with another .1964 teen agg. Well done, Kevin! Each of the shooters were treated to a fine pork dinner with all the fixin’s, put on by the Fairchance Rod and Gun Club on Saturday evening. It was great to visit and catch-up with everyone again. Tim Humpheys and Carl Thompson came up from Hill Country (southern Ohio). All our very good Canadian benchrest friends, George and Vera Carter, Dave and Vicky Holmes, Dave Abbott, Rob MacLennan, Andy Laidlaw and Hugh Williamson (all the way from Calgary) were there with their smiles and many laughs!

The top-shooting, dynamic duo of Gary Sullivan and Don Hardeman made the trek from Florida. My good friends Dave Coots, Dean Ekstrom and Greg King made the trip all the way from Iowa and Southern Illinois. Our good friend, Rodney Brown made the very long journey from Sheridan, WY. We really appreciate everyone’s efforts to attend this year’s Hog Roast match! On to the 200yd stage on Sunday morning. We began with the LV200. Sunday morning greeted us with intermittent rain and challenging winds. Larry Costa, one of our best shooters, continued his winning ways with a very impressive .1709 agg in some very challenging conditions and claimed first place. Don Hardeman, having a great year, took second with a .2033. Gary Sullivan showed his vast skills with a third place finish with a .2278. Little Joel Nader, all the way from Vegas, had a good agg. and finished fourth with a .2369. Kevin Donalds, Jr. off to another great year with

a fine fifth place finish with a .2378 agg. On to the final aggregate; the HV200…Larry Costa took first place by handling some switching wind conditions with a .2232 agg. Hal Drake, who always handles windy conditions well finished second place with a very good .2328 .agg. Top performer, Greg King was third with a good .2374 .agg. Local top shooter, Charlie Gough, finished fourth place with a .2414 .agg. and continuing to roll, Kevin Donalds, Jr. finished in fifth place with a close .2419 agg. Well done, guys and congratulations to all the winners! A very special thanks to Bill Reahard as Match Director and to Jerry Van Sickle as Rangemaster, who kept us all safe and also to the kitchen staff for all the great food for the weekend. Last but certainly not least, the outstanding target crew, who worked so hard enduring constant rainy conditions! I would also like to personally thank all the shooters for attending this

year’s Hog Roast. I really appreciate everyone's support of this great annual benchrest match. I would ask that everyone please keep Lowell Hottenstein's family in all your daily prayers. by Jack Neary, Eastern Region Director Light Varmint 100-Yards Wayne Campbell........... 0.1612 Don Powell................... 0.1688 William McIntyre............ 0.1848 Don Creach................... 0.1896 Kevin Donalds................ 0.1964 Brian Lemley................. 0.1974 Greg King..................... 0.1980 Dave Coots................... 0.2000 Smiley Hensley.............. 0.2010 Allen Arnette................ 0.2036 Mark Buettgen............... 0.2042 Roy Hunter................... 0.2090 Don Rosetti................... 0.2110 Bob Hamister................ 0.2134 Charlie Gough............... 0.2144 Rob MacLennan.............. 0.2178 Floyd Cline................... 0.2180 Tim Humphreys.............. 0.2184 Guy Grabiec.................. 0.2210 John Hurst................... 0.2222 Small Group Vera Carter.................... 0.067

Charles Huckeba Wins the Hill Country Bluebonnet Two Gun

By Cody Engel The first leg of the 2016 Texas State Championship (The Bluebonnet) was hosted by the Hill Country Shooters Association at the Dietz Rifle range in New Braunfels on April 30th and May 1st. We welcomed 30 shooters. Most were familiar faces and we greeted a few new ones. Those camping at the range had quite the lightening show including some strong winds and heavy rains Saturday morning around 3am. By daylight the weather had cleared and the winds were calm and the temperature in the upper 50’s. We started Saturday off with the Sporter 100. Gary Grove won the aggregate with a 0.2374. Tim Oltersdorf came in second with a 0.2426 followed by Mike Conry in third with a 0.2462. Small group went to Dickie Pustejovsky with a fantastic 0.077. A BBQ lunch was served by the Boy Scouts and the LV 100 started soon after. The winds were starting to pick up and got a little switchy but the experienced lot of shooters posted some good groups. Charles Huckeba came out on top with a 0.2012 aggregate, Gary Bristow shot a 0.2142 agg. for second place and John Horn came in third with a 0.2368 agg.. The small group was 0.110 and was shot by Charles Huckeba.

Sunday morning temperatures were in the low 50’s with a light southeast breeze. The LV 200 was on the agenda first. Mike Conry had a stellar performance and made a run at the LV 200 record. Mike ended up with a 0.1575 agg. for first place, Gary Bristow in second with a 0.2377 agg. followed by John Horn in third with a 0.2406 agg.. The small group was shot by Mike Conry, and was a 0.193 The Sporter 200 commenced and the winds started picking up a bit. Charles Huckeba ended up on top with a 0.2584, Scott Hunter shot a 0.3123 for second, and Larry Baggett in third with a 0.3169. The small group of 0.307 was turned in by Mike Bryant. Richard Brensing sweeps up at Okie Shooters

Congratulations to Richard Brensing for showing us how it’s done at the Oklahoma State HV and SP match at Okie Shooter’s range at Luther, OK. Richard won the SP100, HV100, SP Grand and the HV Grand. No two gun agg was figured, but he would have won it as well. Also, congratulations to DeWayne Stafford for winning the HV200 yard. Also, congratulations go to Darrel Loker who edged out Richard by about a .001” for the Oklahoma State Three Gun, which included the LV shot in April. In spite of the reputation that the Okie Shooter’s range at Luther has garnered over the years, there have been some pretty good aggs shot there this year. It is a difficult range to shoot, but well worth visiting. The air does get pretty heavy and will move a bullet father than you’d expect. If you attend next year, don’t forget to bring your tall flag poles. I’m not sure exactly what height flag poles you need, but 10 to 15 foot maximum height will work. Thanks to Rex Reneau, Tom Ross and others who have been putting on matches here. The volunteers who put on matches at various venues put in a lot of work with very little to show for it except their love for shooting benchrest. Mill Creek Rifle Club Mid-Continent Three-Gun Championship

May 14-15, 2016 We held our first match of the season with a cold north wind and temps with a high of 53F on Saturday. There were 27 competitors for our Sporter & Heavy Varmint legs of the Mid-Continent Regional Championship. The Light Varmint leg was contested at Okie Shooters Club in Luther, Oklahoma earlier this year and is the continuation of the Mid-Continent Three Gun Championship. Sunday morning here at Mill Creek, the wind was calm with 43F and sunshine to start the day. It became cloudy and windy as the day progressed. There were a lot of groups over one inch on the last match with 25 competitors that day.

33

Don Creach won the Sporter 100 yardage and Mark Harpenau fired the small group of .174. In the Heavy Varmint 100, TK Nollan took first place with Tim Turnbull shooting the small group of .126. Mark Harpenau came back to win the HV 200 yardage with Bud Mundy taking small group honors this time with .276 and the Sporter 200 yardage was won by Howard Cowher and Greg King took the small group with .126. Moving on to the Grands, TK won the Heavy Varmint Grand while Darrel Loker took Sporter Grand. With all the points tallied, Bud Mundy won the Two Gun. When these two scores are added to the Light Varmint scores from April, the Three Gun Champion emerged as Richard Brensing. Darrel Loker placed a tidy second and in third was TK Nollan. Thanks to the guys who helped move and pick up target frames and to Ron for training two more of his grandsons for target crew duty. Thanks also to Ron for his Range Officer duties and to all the competitors who came. By Don Creach In the photo on page 34 from left: Darrel Loker, Greg King, Howard Cower, TK Nollan, Richard Brens-

The following letter was received in the mail to the Editor from a world renowned benchrest master. Why is the benchrest game dying? Some say the cost to build a rifle and get equipment needed to compete with has gotten out of hand. This may be part of the problem, but not all of it. One of the BIGGEST problems is people cannot get a rifle built in any reasonable time. They are told a time like 6 months. Then a year or so later they still don’t have their rifle. If a rifle maker can’t do what is promised, it would be better to not take the work. It is important to be honest with people. I have received calls from individuals asking me to see if I have any influence on someone that is building a rifle for them to see if I can get their rifle finished for them. I know people that shot rim-fire competition that wanted to get into our game. They spent the money to get everything they needed to shoot benchrest but still did not have their rifles after 15 months. At that point, if they ever did get their rifle, they would sell them because they have already got into some other shooting sport. This is a BIG problem. What can be done about this? First thing we will hear is to buy a used rifle. If you know the history of the used rifle, that is one thing; but just buying any used rifle I do not advise. Maybe the people who are building our benchrest rifles will accommodate the new shooter and get their work completed in a more timely manner. I hope they do this. We need more people in our sport.
