2016 Short Range Score Nationals Southwest Louisiana Rifle & Pistol Club at Lake Charles

Congratulations to Boyd Dartez, 2016 Hunter Class 200 and Grand Aggregate Champion and to Ray Perry, Two Gun Champion: defending your home turf isn’t always easy! Boyd and Ray have knocked on the door before. This time they just walked on in. Mike Bigelow was pretty close to “on fire” garnering wins in the Hunter 100, VfS 200 and GRAND. I am proud of my long association with Mike! My heart goes out to Dwayne Pullum, who suffered being brides-maid in all three of the VfS Aggs - despite an unfortunate early glitch in the [GRAND] tie-breaker, Dwayne handled the the situation with class! Last, but not least, congratulations to Dale Metzger, 2016 VfS 100 Yd. Champion! Well done!

Ray, I’m proud for you for defending your turf...I really wanted that Two Gun! The event was well run. Mike Guillot, Francis Brousard, and company did a very good job. Thanks also to Bobby Ayo for the cooking. A special thanks to these sponsors for helping make this a great shoot. Best of the West: A Binary Good Time in Raton, New Mexico

by Mark Motsko Favorable conditions (and some rain) allowed three dozen competitors to shoot a flurry of zeroes and ones on Saturday, which then turned into one inch groups

on Sunday at the 2016 Best of the West. Here are the small groups for the LV100 Saturday morning match by match: 1. Dean Thomas .108. 2. Charles Huckeba, .078 (small group of the match). 3. Jack Childers, .109. 4. Dennis Martin, (returning after a five year hiatus) .109. 5. Bud

Mundy, .156. Martin finished tied for fourth with Todd Tyler with a .2226. Mundy came in third with a .2108, Childers came in second with a .2030, and Melvin Klasi, out of Rapid City, SD won the morning with a .1902 after shooting a .153, .184, .181, .181 and a .252. In the afternoon for the HV100, Larry Leser from Delta, CO set the bar with a .096 in the first match, but a hiccup in the second match bumped him to an eighth place finish with a .2494 agg. Wheeler Texas’ Mike Bryant’s small group of .157 in the second kept him in the top half at the finish with a .2826. Darrel Loker from Owasso, OK was the only competitor to have a ‘one’ agg, with a .1712 to win first place. His .103 in the third match was his small group of the afternoon. Richard Brensing out of Mullinville, KS shot a .118 in the fourth, and he finished fifth

for the afternoon with a .2390. Bob Brackney, out of Wickenburg, AZ, shot a .131 in the final match of the day. Brackney finished fourth with a .2264. Lowell Frei, out of Hurricane, UT, finished second with a .2102, and Ed Adams, from Albuquerque, NM finished third with a .2198. Sunday morning started off quietly, but the winds quickly picked up and made for some interesting scores. Competitors rotated benches Saturday afternoon, and in the HV200, Sam Langhofer from Benton, KS took advantage of the calm conditions to set the bar and take home a small group trophy with a match small group of .182. He was followed by Rodney Brown and Jack Childers. Conditions started getting a little squirrely during the second match. Langhofer’s .585 kept him in first place followed by Dennis Martin. Randy Sullivan’s .334 was second match small group, and that moved him into third. Langhofer maintained his lead after the third match with a .349, but Mike Bryant’s small group of .289 jumped him into second, followed by Childers and Todd Tyler out of Rio Rancho, NM. Bryant and Langhofer switched spots after the fourth match with Childers holding off Tyler for third. Richard Brensing’s .378 was small group for the match. Finally, when the last ceasefire was called for the morning, Todd Tyler lived up to his nickname of “Catfish” by overtaking the field to finished first with a .2294 agg. Rodney Brown was second with a .2350, followed by Bryant with a .2353, Loker with a .2516 and Huckeba with a .2594. The Heavy Varmint Grand Aggregate champion was Darrel Loker with a .2114, followed by Lowell Frei .2363, Rodney Brown

.2434, Todd (Catfish) Tyler .2470 and Ed Adams .2491. Sunday afternoon in the LV200, the wind started to pick up and as is the case, the groups started getting a little bigger. Bob Brackney was atop the standings after the first match with a .451, followed by Lowell Frei, Ed Adams and Todd Tyler. Bud Mundy’s .354 in the second match moved him into first, bumping Brackney into second while Larry White moved into third. Mundy stayed in first after the third match while White moved to second and ‘Uncle’ Larry Baggett snuck into third place with a small group of .388. Unfortunately, both Mundy and Baggett shot one inch groups in the fourth, allowing Frei to regain the lead with his small group of .406, followed by Mike Bryant and Ed Adams. After the fifth match, when the final ‘ceasefire’ was called for the weekend, it was Frei in first with a .2691 agg, followed by Adams’ .2930. ‘Catfish’ Todd Tyler lived up to his nickname again! Tyler saved his best for last and took home two trophies (of many) with a match small group of .277 and third place. With the .277, Tyler lowered his aggregate score in the Light Varmint to .2686, edging out Adams’ .2703. Frei came in third with a .2833 followed by Brackney and Jack Childers. With a Two Gun Grand Aggregate of .2578, Todd Tyler wins the weekend and re-claims the Alvin Davidson Memorial Trophy. Ed Adams finished just behind with a .2597 beating Lowell Frei’s .2598 by the slimmest of margins. Charles Huckeba’s .2742 earned him the fourth place trophy and Bob Brackney’s .2763 earned him a fifth place trophy.

Thanks to all the crew, Aaron Snyder is doing a great job as match caller, and the new target crew had zero errors, keeping the tradition of allowing the competitors to concentrate on their shooting, and not having to worry about missing targets. Remember that the Rattlesnake in August is a World Team Qualifier. We hope to see a lot of competitors show up to try out of the team. Heavy Varmint Group Shoot

May 15, 2016 Twelve chilled shooters gather in mid-thirty degree weather to start a heavy varmint group match at the Oak Hill Gun Club. The temperature did warmup to around sixty degrees in the afternoon but with the increase in temperature also came the wind 8 to 15 MPH with gust over 20 that swirled in the valley an challenged most competitors. Jim Carstensen started out on the HV100 first target with the small group of .079 and continued on to dominated with a .1886 agg. JJ Coe stay with him most of the way with a .2008 agg.

Conditions kept picking up for the HV200 and Jim Carstensen and JJ Coe were reading the wind better than most. Jim owned the small group with a .306 but JJ was the only competitor that did not shoot an inch group and finished with .3069 Agg. for an impressive win. The Grand Agg was very close with Jim Carstensen squeezing out .2510 victory with JJ Coe keeping it very close with a .2538 agg, (see photo above). I would like to thank all the shooters that braved the temperature and wind for a great day at the gun range to prove that it takes a lot more then fancy guns to win at this game. By Jim Schmidt

Dana Andrus Wins the Two Gun Jeff Williams Wins Sporter

Central Utah State Championship April 30 – May 1, 2016 Well Mother Nature, fickle as she is, gave us plenty of weather options this past weekend. Our range, which lies in the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon of the Wasatch Mountain Range, was gorgeous displaying beautiful verdant spring colors…when the sun was out. However, cool weather with showers and at times, strong wind tormented shooters for most of the weekend. One gust was clocked at 48 mph during the match on Sunday. These sudden gusts and flag swithches caused a few shooters to land shots outside the box. Consequently there are no teen aggs or screamer groups shot this weekend. It was a tough scenario for the first leg of the Utah State Championship. Jeff Williams started things off Saturday morning with a small group of .187 in relay #1 of the Sporter 100 yard stage. Jeff went on to win the Sporter 100 with a fine .2200 agg. Dave Blazzard came in second with a .2434 agg and John Verhagen was third with a .2452 agg. Dave Blazzard had the small group for the yardage, a .148. After a pizza lunch break, Dave Woodward took command of the

Unlimited 100 winning the yardage with a .2674 agg and the small group for the yardage, a very nice .184. Marty Childers took second place with a .2734 agg and Dave Blazzard was third with a .2852 agg. These were the only three agg’s in the 2’s as the gale force winds buggered shooters! Dana Andrus took charge of the Unlimited 200 yard stage Sunday morning and put a hurt on the other shooters. His wining agg of .5974 was solidly ahead of Lou Murdica’s second place agg of .7190 and Jeff Williams third place agg of .7387. Strong winds were playing havoc on the 10 shot groups but Lou Murdica managed a fantastic .595 small group for the yardage in match #5. By way of comparison, three of the relays small groups were in excess of one inch and the fourth was a .993!. When you lost a shot out of your group, it was really lost. Well, with his strong finish in the Unlimited 200, Dana Andrus captures the Unlimited Grand Agg with a .4787. Lou Murdica is second with a .5205 Grand Agg and Jeff Williams is third with a .5469 Grand Agg. Dave Gibson was on a maiden voyage of sorts. Dave recently took up chambering his barrels and this was his first tournament shooting a barrel he chambered. That barrel did him proud as he won the

Sporter 200 stage with a .3521 agg in difficult conditions. Congratulations Dave and may all your future barrels be winners too! Second place went to Jeff Williams with a .3655 agg and Lou Murdica took third place with a .3804 agg. Small group for the yardage was a very nice .309 shot by John Verhagen in match 5. Jeff Williams wins the Sporter Grand Agg with the only Grand Agg in the 2’s, a .2928. Dave Gibson takes second place with a .3007 and Lou Murdica is third with a .3211 Grand Agg. The Utah State Two Gun Champion is Dana Andrus with a winning agg of .4172. Second place goes to Jeff Williams and his .4198 agg and in third place is Lou Murdica with a .4208 agg. Congratulations to the winners and to all who came and competed this weekend. We had competitors from six states and it was a pleasure having you compete at our range and we appreciate your attendance. We look forward to seeing you in August for the second half of the Utah state Championship. A Big Thanks to Dave Tunbridge for his continuing dedication to hosting these tournaments. It takes a lot of labor and long hours preparing for these matches and we certainly appreciate Dave’s efforts. Along with Dave, a big Thank You also to our target and range crew led by Shane, Marsha, Misty and Justin. Joe Olas is always pitching in and helping Dave and we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge his efforts too. So Joe, many thanks for your behind-the-scene assistance all these years. Your time and efforts do not go unnoticed and we appreciate your involvement. Safe travels and small aggs everyone!

Larry Boers Wins 2016 Manley Oakley Trophy

May 7-8, 2016 The Tacoma Rifle and Revolver Club held their second match of the year. This contest would determine the winner of the Manley Oakley trophy. Saturday brought us a warm morning with some tricky wind conditions. We began with our Sporter class at 100 yards on Saturday morning which was won by Larry Muller with a tiny .1964" agg. That afternoon at 200 it warmed up further, the wind and mirage caused minor havoc, but Dan Kjelland showed us all how it’s done, taking the 200 yd agg. (.2462"). Matt Spradlin shot the best overall for the day taking the Sporter grand aggregate (.2535"). Sunday brought more windy, but much cooler conditions for us. Windy, switchy conditions and some light mirage was playing a role in group sizes. We shot the Heavy Varmint class at 200 yards in the morning. Jeff Lewis shot a .2308" agg. to win the yardage. At

100 yards in the afternoon, Larry Boers took the yardage with a spectacular .1822" teen agg. Larry Boers shot the best overall for the day and took the HV grand aggregate with a .2197" agg. Larry Boers brings home the trophy for the second year in a row, winning the Two gun with a .2505" agg. Congratulations Larry! Of special note, it was nice to have shooting with us Eric Stanton and Larry Muller, who traveled to Tacoma from Oregon. Special thanks to Karen Lynn and Zach Silverton for doing a fine job running our Range and Target crew. Coffee cup small group awards go to: Larry Muller Sporter 100 .136", Dan Kjelland Sporter 200 .211", Larry Boers HV100 .103", and Eric Stanton HV200 .330". We also had our first look at our new covered loading area. Wow, what a big improvement! A big thank you to Duane Hatch, Curtis Peterson, and all involved at TRRC for getting this done. And finally, we said goodbye to a friend and fellow shooter, Denny Andrews. A moment of silence

before the final match on Sunday was held to honor our friend Denny who passed away April 29th. Thank you. Our next match is a Heavy Varmint plus bring out the rail guns for 5 shot Unlimited! by Jeff Lewis In the photo above from left: Jeff Lewis, Dan Kjelland, Mark Walker, Doug Schwind, Matt Spradlin, Larry Muller, Jim Lynn. Holton Gun & Bow Club President’s Cup

May 8-9, 2016 On Saturday we had 26 shooters and on Sunday we had 24. Our weather was pretty comfortable for the beginning of May. The wind was variable (switchy) and it made for some difficult matches. Sunday morning weather brought a slight lull with increasing wind as the day progressed. Saturday evening we held a steak dinner that turned out very well with great friends and good food. Ted Heindselman was

our Two Gun winner with a 0.3277 aggregate. Kevin Hovis said he borrowed a rifle to shoot a .052 group at 100 yards. LV Grand winner was Mel Newransky and Dale Dillingham won the HV Grand. Congratulations Ted, our Two Gun Champion. I would like to thank all the shooters that came out to Holton and also everyone that helped to make our shoot run without any problems. by Connie Wyant & Mel Newransky In the photo from left: Victor Potts, DeWayne Wood, Dale Dillingham, Dominic Grunas, Ted Heindselman, Melvyn Newransky,

Larry Boers Wins the Sniper King Warm-Up May 21-22, 2016

Twenty five contenders from Washington, Arizona and up and down California came this weekend and braved the hot temperatures to see who would reign at the Sniper King warm-up. Of these 25, Larry Boers kept rising to the top beginning with the HV100 with a small 0.1244 aggregate and a teeny 0.058 small group. George Lozano

aligned his sights on the HV200 and took first with a great 0.1661 aggregate and Gary Ocock made the small group of 0.223. That’s some fine shooting, gentlemen. Battling for the grand, Larry Boers was back with a 0.1541 agg followed by George Lozano with 0.1920. Moving along to the unlimited guns, SoCal’s own, Lawrence Weisdorn took the win with a 0.1470 aggregate and the small group of 0.087. Great shooting, Lawrence. In the UNL200, George Lozano

was back and won the aggregate with a 0.1723 and SW Region Director, Tom Libby won the small group with 0.168. In the grand, George remained in top place with a 0.1821 followed by Washington’s Larry Boers. After the two days shooting was complete, Larry Boers won first place with a 0.1696 aggregate in the Two Gun and is the winner of the Sniper King Warm-Up for 2016. Congratulations Larry on some fine shooting. Since the Sniper King match is held at Tacoma, WA, Larry has “home court advantage”. We’ll see how things shape up soon! Arizona Benchrest’s Season Ender Unlimited Match

The Arizona Bench Rest Shooters would like to thank everyone who has come out to our matches this season. On April 9-10, 2016, we shot the last match of our season, the Unl5-Unl5 Season Closing match. In total, we had 24 shooters come out for the match. Practice days were a mix of conditions, with the wind changing throughout the day and even some

short bursts of rain. These fully Unlimited 5-Shot matches are a great deal of fun. A lot of shooters spend much time and money building these rifles, only to have a few shoots a year where they can really compete with them. When these shoots do come around, they get to show off their hard work. By Saturday, the weather had cleared up and it gave us a beauti-

ful day with good shooting conditions. Throughout the day we had seven screamers. During the first match after lunch Tom DeBacco shot a 0.078”, just to be shown up by his son, Tony DeBacco, who shot an amazing 0.049”. Tom couldn’t be happier that to have his son edge him out of that small group. Later in the day William (Doc) Marsh shot a spectacular 0.054”. These groups were close enough that we will be sending them in to be evaluated for possible NBRSA National Records. The current record for 100 Yard Unlimited is 0.049”, held by Bench Rest Hall of Famer Gary Ocock. Sunday started off nice enough, with sunny skies and good groups including Bob Brackney’s amazing 0.098” 200 yard group. The weather decided to take a complete turn on Sunday afternoon though, leading into some very heavy rain. This still did not stop the good groups from forming though, as even during the rain and wind we still saw multiple teen groups shot throughout the day. For the 1-Gun Grand Agg, Bob Brackney took third with a 0.2005”, right behind Lester Bruno’s 0.1944”. Dana Andrus took first with a 0.1863”. Two teen aggs on a weekend like this is more than a little impressive! This match marked the last one of the AZBRS season, which means that it was the last match of this year’s AZBRS Ironman Aggregate. Throughout the season we combined all of our 2-Gun scores to create a running grand agg. We subtract the shooter’s lowest score from these matches and this creates the Ironman Agg. Hall of Fame shooters compete for their own Ironman trophy. In all we had 15 shooters that came to enough matches to qualify. Doc Marsh took fifth with a 0.3054” grand agg, behind Dan Sutton’s 0.2992”. In third was Tom DeBacco with a 0.2874”

and in second we had Dana Andrus with a 0.2806”. Lou Murdica took home the Ironman Trophy with a 0.2676”. The Hall of Fame Ironman was especially competitive, with the final match being the determining factor on the winner. Thanks to Lester Bruno’s second place finish this weekend, he pushed up above Gary Ocock’s 0.2525”. In the end Lester took home the trophy with a 0.2434”. Great shooting Lester! Keep in mind these aggs are combined from 6 competitions, a total of 120 matches! That is some impressive long term shooting for all of our Ironman competitors over the entirety of the past 7 months. Throughout this weekend’s match, many of our shooters were trying out some new and interesting rail guns, including the match winner, Dana Andrus. Make sure to view the Berger Bullets Flickr page to see pictures of these rail guns. Thanks again to all of our shooters for making this a great season. We look forward to seeing everyone again in October for the Bench Rest Group Nationals. We will be posting more details on the match on Bench Rest Central and on our website at www.azbrs.com as we have more information. --Arizona Bench Rest Shooters Unlimited 100-Yards Duke Rovarino.............. 0.1626

Tomball Gun Club’s Texas State VFS Championship

by the Pullum Brothers The Tomball Gun Club hosted the annual Texas State Varmint for score match on April 24th. We had 22 shooters attend the match. We started off the day with 100 yd in the morning and broke for lunch from Tomball Bar BQ and with rain in the horizon we were able to still finish the day with the 200 yd. We then managed to get all packed up before the storm came in. At the end of the day Jackie Schmidt came out on top. Way to shoot Jackie! We want to thank the Tomball Gun Club for letting us host another great match and all the shooters who joined us! Lands End Bench Rest

by Truman Wilson May 21-22, 2016 In the seasonably cool morning the thirty-four competitors threaded their way through the “Save the Lizard” protesters that were attempting to block the gate. Open hostilities were in the air, but we were armed with more than signs. Amid taunts and jeers we got the Light Varmint “commence fire” command at 9 am. Colorado’s future “Bench Rest Hall of Famer“, Brandon McNairy, set a fast pace with a .179 in the first match. Next Terry O’Connell, apparently a refugee from southern AZ, took the lead with a .160 on the second target. Pushing O’Connell hard Cliff McNairy shot a .161 to take the third match. The fourth and fifth matches were taken by seasoned

competitors Roy Damron with a .221 and Norm Cox with a .156 for match five. Cliff McNairy (the father) won the yardage with part time resident Lowell Frei taking second. Third place went to Roy Damron, fourth to a local new shooter Leon Noel and fifth place to visitor Wayne Christian. The noise was too much for the protesters and they departed. The lunch caterer arrived on time with a tasty lunch. Life is good. The temperature was at 86 degrees and continuing to rise and so were the breezes. Dan Dowling took the first match at 200 yards with a respectable .561. Not to be overlooked, Kelly Ellis stepped into the limelight with a .489. Even the local whipping boy, Truman Wilson,

stumbled into a good target with the .397 for the third match. Dan Dowling, trying to save face after a 3.228 (can you say breezy?) on the third target shot a .720 to lift his spirits and win the fourth match. All around nice guy Jack Duncan took the fifth match with a .565. With renewed determination after his third target, a 1.185, Kelly Ellis won the yardage. Young Brandon McNairy showed his mettle by taking second place and steady Lowell Frei took third place. Fourth went to the Czar of eastern CO bench rest, Bud Schalles with fifth place going to Jack Duncan. The Light Varmint grand as follows; Lowell Frei first place, Cliff McNairy second place, Bud Schalles third place, Leon Noel fourth and Roy Damron fifth place.

August, 2016 Precision Rifleman

Sunday is warmer, reaching about 92, and downright windy. Bud Schalles starts the HV 200 yard with a winning .552, but backs it up with a small inch target in match two. Scott Smith, a friendly and able competitor from UT, took the second match with a .608. In the hurricane, Jack Childers saw something he liked and shot a .513 to take the third match. Leon Noel shot a .552 to win the fourth match. But the perseverance banner goes to Tom Hunn. Hunn, after struggling through a 4.628 and three separate inch plus groups, and with the help of Rodney Brown, overcame ammo issues to put a .501 on paper to take the fifth match and the yardage small group. Every competitor shot at least one group of an inch or more during this yardage. After lunch, the HV 100 yard was again started off with another Bud Schalles win, a .215. Jack Duncan makes another appearance in match two with a .251 win. Terry O’Connell also reappears with a .236 third match win. Fourth match produces a new winner; Norm Cox just misses a screamer with a .100. And another new face, Jeff Anderson, wins the fifth match with a .195. Bud Schalles won the HV Grand. Second place to Dave Gibson. Third place to Leon Noel. Tom Stiner, our esteemed match director, took a fourth place plaque and fifth place went to Roy Damron. We would like to thank the dedicated stats and target crews for their speedy and efficient work. Thanks also to the competitors for your support, especially the first time shooters and new shooters to our range. Come back, we’ll do our best to show you a good time. Post script; The truculent lizard, our mascot, may be procreating and spreading his ill tempered ilk around the country, much like killer bees and the zika virus. I have it on good authority that a com-

petitor at June 11 and 12, Ault, CO shoot was attacked in his sleep by an unknown “fanged” varmint that sounds suspiciously like the lizard. Ojai Valley Gun Club 600 Yard Benchrest

Fifteen shooters attended our match on May 15, 2016. The wind was a major factor for the second relay. It became a difficult day for all to shoot as well as anyone wanted. Great shooting was displayed by Leroy Johnson in light gun, shooting first in both score and group. Jason Peterson shot first in both score and group in heavy gun and in the end Jason ended up as our match winner. Wayne Schick did very well and came in second overall. It was fun to have Canada Cummins and Keith Failer shoot with us, making their way from Northern California. As always it is nice to have our NBRSA VP, Don Nielson, shoot with us. Again we must thank Barry Bluhm, match director, Mike Leonard and the others who set up and take flags and keep the matches run smoothly, Again a huge thank you to Heather Johnson who helped Barry with registration and in the pits. We must thank Nina Nuron who does all the data entering the stat-house. Come join us for one of our fun matches! May 2016 Sahuaro 1,000-Yard Benchrest By Dale Arenson

The blood red Arizona sunrise had turned pink and then a pale blue as the light breezes rustled through the Ocotillos and the Saguaros. There was no chill in the clean desert morning air, it was a perfect 65 degrees already at 7:00 AM. Jackrabbits and quail scattered as a squadron of pickup trucks roared up the dirt road towards the 1,000 yard line of the Three Points Range in southern Arizona. The first relay shooters were anxious to get set up and start pulling triggers before the wind started to blow. We had another good turn out, most of them our regular long range aficionados of the southwest. After having helped get the match going, putting up wind flags and assembling targets, we were starting the first sighter period just before 8:00. Conditions in relay one were ''average''. Not great, but not bad. They lasted pretty well through relay three, but turned nasty for relay four. More on that later. There were a total of 17 sub-MOA groups recorded in light gun. Many

of them in relay three. In fact, light gun score was won by John Benz and his 6.5-284. Together they turned in a 139-3X, and the small group in light gun was shot also in relay three by Billotte Gang member Mike Billotte with a 4.25'' and 48 score with his 7mm SAUM. Perennial Sahuaro Top Gun Ross Herrick worked his usual magic with his Lazzaroni 7.82 (.30 caliber) Patriot by shooting 7'', a 5'' and 4.3'' groups and ending with a 5.81'' average to win for aggregate group. Mike was right on his heels with a 6.35'' agg, with fellow gang member Pat Billotte right behind him with an 8.02''. Ross was second in score, but shot the highest target with a 49-2X. Heavy Gun was a little tougher with only five sub-MOA groups being shot. But then, Hey, it's heavy gun! It's a lot harder to get those ten shots into a small group. The wind has a way of wanting to change on you as you take the time to send all ten of them downrange. Regardless of the wind, Ross Herrick and his Patriot (he only shoots

one gun) won again for group with a 9.95'' aggregate group, with Dale Arenson just behind him with a 10.52''. Ross also had the smallest group with a 7.81'' Top score in heavy went to Dale Arenson, but just barely. He and Steve Everson were neck and neck at the finish line, both shooting a 256 score, but Dale was saved by one X. However it was Steve who turned in the highest single target score with a well centered 94. Relay four came with a wicked wind that punished those unlucky shooters for defying her and trying to send bullets long range, apparently against her wishes. There were numerous record shots off target by competitors who will mercifully remain nameless. But that's the luck of the draw in the southern Arizona desert, we've all been there. With the group effort of pulling the wind flags and targets down and putting everything away, we were off to Cindy Lou's for lunch by noon, and that wrapped it up for another month, we'll just have to bide our time until we can once again build our ammo to the best of our ability, set up our guns and take on the conditions, the other shooters and of course, our own limitations, which we are constantly trying to overcome. Come join us on the second Saturday of every month, you'll have a good time, even if the wind seems to take a disliking to you. Robert Hiroshi Doi Aug 9, 1954 - May 25, 2016

Book Review

We just received our copy of "Classic Carmichel - Stories from the Field". This book is beautifully written with elegance and style by former Outdoor Life shooting editor, Jim Carmichel. Jim has hunted for over 40 years around the world. This is one of the most interesting and informative books I have ever read. He shares many of his tales and the excitement of big game hunting and wingshooting. He has dedicated an entire chapter to our Benchrest Shooting sport. It is an outstanding tribute to the great contributions "Benchrest" and the desire for accuracy has had on our sport, as he, himself, is a very accomplished shooter in the Benchrest family. Copies can be ordered from the publisher, by phone or email at Sporting Classics, PO Box 23707, Columbia, SC or by visiting the website, www.Sportingclassics.com. Autographed copies can be obtained from him directly for $50.00 plus $4.00 shipping at 11 St Annes Court, Johnson City, Tennessee, 37604. Pam Campbell

Robert Hiroshi Doi passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Robert was born in San Pedro on August 9, 1954 and moved to Visalia in 1958. He attended Mt. Whitney High School and graduated in 1973. Robert married Patti Holahan in 1975, and they remained happily married for over 40 years until his passing. Robert is preceded in death by his father, Kinichi "Pete" Doi of Visalia, CA. He is survived by his wife Patti of Visalia, son Robert Jr "Rob" from Southern California and daughter Marcy of Visalia. He is also survived by grandson Mario Arredondo, mother Saki Doi of Visalia, sister Carol Enos (brother-in-law Dennis) of San Luis Obispo and sister Sharon Sharp (brother-inlaw Michael) of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He is also survived by Maggie, his sweet and loving Westie terrier dog. He and Patti have resided in Visalia since they were married. He had an incredible 26+ years serving the area Parks industry for both the City of Visalia and the City of Tulare. He ultimately retired from the City of

Tulare as the Manager of Parks Maintenance and Construction in 2009. Robert lived life to the fullest! He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities including sport fishing, competitive firearm shooting, and camping in their Airstream trailer at the coast and in the mountains. He also enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and smoking and BBQing meats for family and friends. But most importantly, he loved spending time just talking with people he cared about. Robert was the kind of guy who loved talking to everyone, was inquisitive and made and kept life-long friendships.
