Dick Baier Reports: VanDyne Sportsmens Club Hunter Matches

Mike Paluda Wins in May; Bill Koffman in June

May 4, 2013 Our spring weather has been questionable at best this year, so we had no idea what to expect for our first shoot of the season. Most but not all of the range had dried up somewhat, but we still had to avoid some wet areas. Target help had a few problems but then again, Murphy’s Law always seems to make it to our first match. By Saturday morning it looked quite nice but they predicted rain during the day. Our luck held out as we had no rain until the match was over. With twenty three shooters looking to win the first match of 2013, local shooter John Puhl took control and posted a 250-17X to win the 100 yard title. In second was Craig Nagel just 2 X’s back with a 250-15. Third was another local shooter, Tom Shilka with a 250-13X. The top five rounded out with Jim Koffman with a 250-13X in fourth and Ron Bertrand with 250-9X to finish in fifth. At 200 yards the winds decided they would get involved in things and see if they could have something to say about the match. Wade Hunnewell shot an excellent 249-9X to win the title. Second place was Mike Paluda with a 249-6X and Craig Nagel posted third with a 248-2X. Fourth was Richard Hunnewell with 247-8X and fifth was John Puhl with a 247-4X. The Grand Aggregate went to Mke Paluda with a 498-22X and some excellent shooting. Second place was Wade Hunnewell with 498-20X. Third was

June 1, 2013 After our May match we had hoped that the rains were over but that was not to be. Mother Nature made it look like it was going to be ugly again for our June shoot, but the sun came out on Saturday morning and stayed around most of the day with only a few drops of rain in the late afternoon. The winds at 200-yards that afternoon; however, left something to behold as they came from every direction possible. At 100, there were only three 250’s shot by the twenty-two shooters attending. At Van Dyne, that is a very low number. When the 100 was over, Richard Hunnewell from Minnesota took home that event with a 250-17X. Bruce Hansen from Wisconsin had the same score but placed second in the tie-breaker. Third was won by Mark Taylor from Iowa with a 250-11X. Rounding out the top five was Tom Shilka in fourth with a 249-20X and Craig Nagel in fifth with 249-13X. The 200 saw wind conditions going from bad to worse in the afternoon. Flags were going every direction and points were dropping at such a high rate that it became very clear there would be no 250’s at this yardage on this day. As everyone held on for dear life, Chad Schmidt posted a 244-3X to take the top spot. Second was Bill Koffman only one point behind with 243-2X and Brian Miller in third with a 241-3X. Jim Koffman finished fourth with 240-4X and Bruce Hansen took fifth with a 240-3X.

Whittington Center Benchrest Ed Adams “Three-peats” at the Best In the West

Written by Mark Motsko

Overcast skies and high humidity (for New Mexico) kicked off the practice day in Raton, New Mexico Friday for the 2013 “Best in the West” money shoot. Just as the Whittington Center crews were finishing installing the last target boards, a huge thunderstorm hit the area, putting a kibosh on practice for most of the shooters for the rest of the evening. Eventually, the thunder and lightning turned into thunder, lightning and marble sized hailstones. Since the southwest is in the middle of the worst drought in years, the precipitation was welcomed. Saturday morning, four additional shooters registered and we began with 43 competitors. Canadian Robert Seemann kicked the Light Varmint 100 yards match off with a .156 and followed it up with a .184 and a .219 in match two and three. Seemann continued to lead after the fourth match, but a .305 opened combined with a .110 from Charles Huckeba of Odessa, Texas had them separated by 1/1000th of an inch (Seemann’s .2160 vs. Huckeba’s .2170) going into the final match. When the dust settled and the scores tallied, Mike Bryant’s .206 propelled him into the lead and the first win of the shoot. Huckeba finished second and Don Mullhall took home the third place trophy. Huckeba’s .110 netted him small group and $25. Saturday afternoon, the rains stayed

away and the Heavy Varmint got underway. Dean Parker started with a .141 and Rodney Brown was a close second at .142. Parker continued with a .174, .229, and .183 to stay atop of the leaderboard after four matches. But Matt Bryant was close behind, shooting a .135 and .178 in match three and four. Heading to the final match, the top five were Brown, Bryant, Jim Hemmert, Rex Reneau, and Ed Adams. Adams found a good condition and shot a .074, but Bryant was able to make Adams settle for the small group $25 and the second place trophy, as his .211 was more than enough to claim the top spot. Brown’s .438 dropped him into third place. Sunday morning was overcast and after the first match of the Heavy Varmint 200 yards, 20/1000ths separated the top five shooters. Mike Stockton took the lead with a .301. Don Mulhall grabbed the lead after shooting a .353 and .436 in matches two and three, but Adams’ .298 moved him from 11th to 2nd after the third match. Adams took the lead after the fourth match with a .372, leading his son Tyler Adams .1902 to .2030. Roger Tillery sat in third place. Out of nowhere, Larry Baggett swooped in with a .302 to claim the top spot after the fifth match. “I just waited for the right conditions, read the wind direction and intensity and just drilled them down

there,” Baggett said after the awards ceremony. “Sometimes they go in, and sometimes they don’t.” Tyler Adams hung onto second place, Don Mullhall took the third place trophy. Darrell Loker’s .219 won him the $25 for small group and bumped Adams into fifth. Loker’s .2214 edged out Adams’ .2217. Shooting continued late Sunday morning after the shooters told match caller Tony Gallegos they wanted to continue. Lunch break happened after the second match of the Light Varmint 200 yards. Rodney Brown started the contest off with a .323. By this time, the temperatures were going up, and the winds quickly followed. Ed Adams was able to fight the winds and stayed consistent by staying in first place after the second and third matches. New shooter Larry White from Colorado was able to win the $25 small group after a .310 in the third match. In the fourth match, Charles Huckeba made things interesting with a .325 to jump into third place. Rodney Brown’s .503 put him in second, but Adams held on to the top spot with a .549. When the final set of targets were measured, Randy Pumphrey’s .388 was the smallest group in the final match. Darrel Loker’s .585 pushed Huckeba out of the hardware at the awards ceremony for third place. Mike Bryant kept his hot hand at Light Varmint by taking second place, and Ed Adams took the top spot with a .2653.

When the awards were handed out for Light Varmint Grand Aggregate, Charles Huckeba finished third, Mike Bryant took second, and Ed Adams won with a .2598. For Heavy Varmint Grand, Speedy Gonzalez took the third place trophy, Sam Arnett the second, and Ed Adams won the first place hardware with a .2174. For the two gun, the top five finishers were (in reverse order): Rodney Brown, Rex Reneau, Charles Huckeba, Mike Bryant, and Ed Adams. Adams’ .2386 means he has won the Best of the West for three years in a row. As usual, Aaron Synder and John Harms were a flawless target crew; targets and backers were swapped out in a quick and efficient manner.

Central Texas Benchrest Shooters Announces... Mike Conry Wins the 20th Annual Bluebonnet

Central Texas Benchrest Club hosted the 2013 Bluebonnet Shoot at Dietz Range in New Braunfels on May 4-5, 2013. This match serves as the 1st and 2nd legs of the Texas State 4-Gun. The remaining two legs; were shot at Seymour Stool Shooters and coverage for this event is also included in this issue. The weather was cooperative as we had cool temps in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Turnout was great with fourty-three competitors. Virgil Howarth volunteered to be Range Master and Mike Conry, Gene Bukys and Charles Huckeba were referees. Jerry Hensler volunteered to do the scoring and the Boy Scout Troop 139 provided support needed to set up and retrieve targets. We started Saturday with light varmint 5-shot 100 yards during which we saw Tim Oltersdorf take the small group with a score of 0.110 and Mike Conry take the win with 0.2594. After

lunch the sporter 5-shot 100 was contested and Charles Huckeba tied Tim’s small group score and landed the same 0.110. When the numbers were tallied, John Horn was in the lead with a 0.2602 to win the sporter 100. Sunday we started the shoot at 8AM with the 200 yard events. The wind that morning was not being very friendly and sometimes blew from the southeast, switching to the northwest. Light varmint was contested first and Frank Wilson took the small group at 0.272 and Gary Bristow won the aggregate with a score of 0.2791. Sporter came next with Gene Bukys taking the small group with 0.271 and Larry Baggett took the win with a score of 0.2998. Moving on to the grands, Charles Huckeba won the light varmint with a score of 0.2863 and Larry Baggett claimed the sporter with a score of 0.3071. When the two-gun was tallied,

out came Mike Conry with a grand aggregate of 0.3085 nudging out Huckeba’s 0.3142 and Baggett’s 0.3176 for top honors. We would like to thank everyone for coming, especially those who drove a great distance to participate. Our thanks to the Boy Scout Troop 139 from New Braunfels for the target crew and for furnishing the great BBQ and sausage lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Now, don’t you wish you would have come too? Finally, last but not least, a special thank you to Howard and Sammye Dietz for allowing us to use their range for this two-day event. The Bluebonnet would not have been possible without their support. Hope to see everyone next year and bring a friend too! Oak Hill: Do Not Give Up When you lose the 100 and 200 yard aggregate and do not have a small group at either yardage your chances for a win are dwindling, but do not give up, as frequently the leaders stumble. Just keep doing your best and don’t give up on any group. Try to stay close. That’s exactly what happened at Oak Hill on May 19 as two shooters could win the yardages but could not put the competition away for the Grand Agg. The 100 yard agg was won by Cecil Peterson followed by Dean Ekstrom, Jim Hayes, Jerry Wick and Jim Carstensen. The small group was 0.082 shot by Cecil on match 4 but Dean shot small groups on matches 2 and 3 with 0.175 and 0.136 respectively. Jim Carstensen won the 200 yard agg followed by Dean Ekstrom, Jerry Wick, Cecil Peterson and Jim Hayes. Small group 0.2986 was shot by Cecil with Dean having small group on matches 2 and 3 with 0.335 and 0.360 respectively. Sound familiar? You do not have to win a yardage or have the smallest group to win the Grand Agg as Dean Ekstrom won 0.2439 the big plaque beating out Jim Carstensen, Cecil Peterson, Jerry Wick and Jim Hayes. Below are the results for all shooters. Notice where the match was won and lost and by which shooters. The lesson here is to stay close. Frequently the leaders stumble. Your chances for winning are never gone until the last match has been shot. Do not give up. Oak Hill: Care to Dance? Are you one who dances all night with the girl you came with or do you continue to change partners? Your preference to change dance partners or not may be reflected in your benchrest style. After shooting a group at 100 yards measuring 0.107, some of you would stay with that combination but others might think to change something (load perhaps)? After shooting a teen agg (0.1736) some of you would stay with that gun for the 200 yard contest. Other might change guns, load, bullets and maybe even their underwear. This is not meant to criticize. It just shows how differently we all think. Because we are always trying to improve our game, sometimes we are more successful than others, but we continue to try based on our previous experiences. This is what makes benchrest so interesting. Because we are never satisfied with the status quo, we are continually trying to improve our game.

Did he really shoot five different loads on five targets? Only he knows, but he sure put the rest of his competitors in the distance. He won three of the five targets’ small groups of the event and won the Light Varmint 100. He became famous the last few years by coaching his two grandsons to multiple wins at Oak Hill. He is a great mentor if you want to make your own bullets. Regardless of how many dance partners Mr Harry Rowold entertained at Oak Hill Benchrest, it was obvious he was “King of Swing”. He had small group 0.107 and his LV 100 win agg was a respectable 0.1735. He was followed in the distance by Cecil Peterson, Jim Schmidt, Jim Carstensen and Dave Coots who could not get a different dance partner. The 200 yard winners were Cecil Peterson (0.2304) followed by Dave Coots, Jim Carstensen, Jim Schmidt and Dean Ekstrom. Small group was 0.313 by Dean. Light Varmint Grand Agg winners were Cecil Peterson 0.2221, Jim Schmidt, Harry Rowold, Jim Carstensen & Dave Coots. Stats follow. Please review your favorite competitor or new partner.

Nevada State Shoot is the “Bryn Borras Show By Jan Sarras The state shoot was held on May 25 and 26. We had our usual small crowd. Really folks, the winds are not that bad, even though National shooters may disagree. The weather was somewhat cool and a bit breezy, more commonly known as wind in other areas. We started off with the LV200. Bryn Borras won this in breezy conditions with a .3854 agg. Fairly new to short range benchrest, Mark Ronchetti took 2nd with the only other agg. in the threes, .3926. Congrats Mark. The small group was shot by Don Archibald, .108 In the HV200, Bryn Borras took this agg walking away from the field and also had the small group at .389. Sunday was not much better other than being consistently breezy start to finish. Again Bryn Borras lead the way in the HV100 with a .2772. Bryn also had the small group, .115. The afternoon LV100 winner way no other than

Bryn Borras with a clean sweep of all four aggs, congrats Bryn! The agg was .3854. Mark Ronchetti place 2nd, .3926 followed by Lonnie Gordon, .4118. See the results for the play by play. Thanks to those who participated and for the help that many gave to make this a good shoot. The 2nd half of this shoot will be held September 28th and 29th. Thanks and be well. Precision Rifleman

Good Stuff for Today’s Benchrest Shooters by James Mock While at the 2013 Super Shoot, I was asked to review two products for Benchrest shooters. Mike Ezell of Kentucky contacted me before the Super Shoot and asked if I would write a review of his wind flags and my impressions for Precision Rifleman magazine. I arranged to meet him in Bowling Green, KY and get the flags there since he was not attending. The second item is a March Tactical scope (10X-60X x 52mm). Jim Kelbly, (Kelbly’s Inc.) is the distributor for the March line of scopes. Jim loaned me one of these fine scopes for review. I will begin with the March scope. The March line of scopes has a short but illustrious history. About 2005, there were many in the Benchrest community who desired a high quality scope that would “hold” zero with-

out fail. The sentiment from the Benchrest community was that shooters would pay a premium price for such a scope. A friend in Texas knew some optical engineers in Japan and convinced them to build a couple prototypes that would satisfy the benchrest shooters. I was privileged to look through the first prototype. It was a 40X with 52mm objective and was built on a 30mm tube. The view through that scope was beyond anything that I have ever seen. After this prototype was shown to several shooters and the scope received glowing reports, the engineer in Japan stated that before production of such a specialty scope there must be a guarantee of sales. I am not sure of the number of scopes that had to be bought before production, but the number would represent a very substantial investment. One man stepped forward and stated that he would buy the required number. That man was Lou Murdica. Not too long after Lou’s offer, Kelbly’s Inc. agreed to be the importer and distributor of this fine line of scopes. I would like to thank both of them for their efforts in bringing this line of scopes to today’s benchrest shooter. The Deon Optical Design Corporation is the manufacturer of the scopes that are imported today. (Photo #1 shows the scope mounted on my old 6mm Dasher.)

March 10x-60x by 52mm Tactical After asking me if I would test the March scope, Jim Kelbly asked what type of shooting would I likely be doing. I told him that I would be shooting 600 yard benchrest once a month. He recommended the 10-60x tactical model with the MTR-2 reticle. That was more than okay with me. (Photo #2 top right column shows this reticle as seen against my backstop at 100 yards.) The hash marks of this reticle

subtend 1/2 MOA when the power is set at ~45X. The reticle is in the second focal plane and therefore subtends a full MOA at 22.5 X. This is very handy for the 600 yard shooting that I do. Our sighters are on metal gongs and the bullet strike can be seen easily. One can set the scope at 45 power and use the reticle to see the distance that the strike was from the aiming point. Each hash mark is 1/2 MOA or three inches. March also offers several models with first focal plane reticles. These reticles subtend the same distance regardless of power used. The reticle magnifies as the power is increased. There are three variable power models with the first focal plane. They include 1x-8x; 3x-24x; 5x-40x. These are very popular with long range hunters. This is a premium scope in every way and the following list contains some of the features found in this scope: * The finest ED glass is used. * There are 60 MOA of elevation and 40 MOA windage. Each revolution changes the reticle by 10 MOA. * Eye relief is very long (almost 4 inches). * It features a 30 mm tube and weighs 25.7 ounces. * The MTR and MML reticles are etched on glass. * The scope will focus to 10 yards (for possible air rifle use). * It features a very functional “zero stop”. (See Photo #3 top next column) * Reticles include the following: crosshair, 1/16 MOA dot, 3/32 MOA dot, 1/8 MOA dot, Di-plex, MTR-1, -2, -3, -4, MTRFT and MML. For a description of these, contact Kelbly or the March website.

Testing the Scope

After returning from the Super Shoot, I mounted the scope on my rifle and zeroed it. As expected the adjustments were crisp and accurate. With a new scope, I generally shoot a “box” test. In this test I choose an aim point and use it throughout the test. After the first shot, I adjusted “up” 32 clicks (4 inches) and fired second shot; next, right 32 clicks and fire again. I moved “down” 32 clicks and fired the 4th shot. I realized that I did not make a good shot, so I fired a second round (#5). After moving left 32 clicks, I finished my test with the 6th round. As can be seen in Photo #4 below, the hole from the 6th shot touched number one. This scope passed the “box” test with flying colors. My eyes are the only optical equipment I have for testing the lens in a scope. With this instrument I found edge to edge sharpness, true colors and no distortions. The adjustments were very precise and the tracking was perfect. There was no point of impact shift with a change in power.

On June 15th, I shot a 600 yard match. The temperature was in the mid-nineties and the mirage was terrible. I turned the scope to 45X to lessen the effect of the mirage. Maybe I should have gone even lower, which

is certainly possible with this flexible variable. I shared my rifle with my cousin’s 16 year-old grandson and he shot very well for a new shooter. In my opinion, there was not a better scope on the line than the one we had on my Dasher. No, I didn’t win the match, but I was favorably impressed with the scope. For 600 yard matches, I zero at 100 yards and when I get to the match I click up 11 MOA and shoot the gong. With this scope, I set the “zero” lock at the 100 yards and then changed the elevation setting. If I get “lost” at 600, I can easily return to my 100 yard setting and start over. Also, the turrets are easy to set at zero. All one needs is a coin to remove the screw. Lift the knob and place at zero then replace the screw. This scope comes with leather scope caps, a 3-inch sun shade, and a 35mm modifier disk. This disk reduces the aperture to help eliminate glare on bright, sunny days. I used it during the match. How much is a scope worth that has precise adjustments, holds zero, has superb optics and has features that are needed in the long range game? I don’t know the precise cost of this scope, but believe it is in the $3000 range. Although it may not be for the price-sensitive shooter, I know that there are many who want the best and will pay a premium for a premium product. If you are interested in this item or any of the extensive line of March scopes, give Jim Kelbly a call at 330-683-4674.

Ezell Wind Flags Many shooters who are attracted to benchrest competition buy everything needed except a good set of wind flags. After a few years of struggling with mediocre performance, they decide that a good set of wind flags may be a good investment. I contend that this should be the first item that one should purchase. For the last month, I have been using a set of fine wind flags made by Mike Ezell of Auburn, Kentucky. Mike has put a great deal of thought into making one of the very best wind flags available. After three years, he now markets one of the most advanced wind flag systems I have seen. (Photo #5 shows a set of four set up on my practice range). He has spared no expense in materials. The

15

vane and pinwheel are made of fiberglass, which are covered with florescent vinyl in green/red or yellow/red combinations. This vinyl will not chip and never needs painting. The shaft is made of carbon fiber, while the pivots and adaptors are made of teflon rather than delrin or other materials. The teflon is more expensive, but Mike feels that it is worth the extra expense because of its slickness and durability. (Photo #6 shows a close-up of one of the flags). Mike will make adaptors for the type of pole that the customer has. I have a ¼ inch rod. Let me add that the hardware is all stainless and these flags won’t rust and should last many, many years. The pivot for both the pinwheel and the vane are of very small diameter and are polished to produce minimum friction. Mike offers a 30 day 100% satisfaction guarantee, and if one is not satisfied with the product, a full refund will be given. Although Mike highly recommends the use of sail tails on his flags, I used 1 ½ inch white ribbon on the set I have. I am not in a high velocity wind area of the country and I prefer the ribbon-type tails over the sail tails. In the June 600 yard match at the local range, I used these four flags along with two of my original ones. I set the Ezell flags at 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards. Thanks to the very bright colors, I could quickly detect a change in the conditions. I believe Mike has a real winner with these flags. I may try the sail tails in our next 600 yard match and see how they work. Mike’s theory is that the light weight pinwheels will show low velocity winds while the sail tails won’t max out during a hard blow. Although Mike’s flags are not cheap ($60), they do represent a good value. There are no short cuts taken in either construction or materials. He keeps a supply on hand of both flags and poles and can provide adaptors in a few days. You can contact Mike at 270 542-6022.

Concentricity Gauge This type of indicator was designed specifically for checking rotating diameters and in fact is exactly the type of gauge used in the machining industry for decades to measure run out; the very thing that we as hand loaders are striving to minimize or eliminate. At 21 Century Shooting it is our goal to modernize an industry that has seen little change over the years. Our concentricity gauge is a perfect example. st

18 Precision Rifleman From the Gulf Coast Region’s Seymour Stool Shooters:

Mike Conry Wins the Texas Four-Gun...Again!

May 18-19, 2013 Following up on last year’s performance, Mike Conry makes another clean sweep of the Texas Four-Gun. We hauled our heavy two piece unlimited rifles and a benchrest bag gun up to Seymour,Tx to test our wind reading skills. We are accustomed to the wind at Seymour,Tx.(SEE-MORE) You see more wind than you do anything else in this small Central Texas town. We were a little surprised at the 104 degree Temperatures in May. The wind blew hard and harder all weekend long. We did our best to figure it out. In spite of our efforts, there were some big groups shot by everybody. Mike Conry from Midland, somehow managed to repeat his previous years performance by winning the whole thing. See the posted results. Mike lives and shoots where the wind blows con-

stantly. Could be an explanation for his consistency. The food at the Ranger Creek Hunting Lodge and Blessings restaurants will make you forget about the big groups that you shot. Thanks to the Match organizers John Horn, Scott Hunter and Trae and Tammi Reed for a well planned weekend of Fun. The Match Director(Eric) and Target crew did a superb job as usual. A lot of effort and energy goes into putting these matches on. Put this match on your list of things to do next year. You won’t be disappointed. Bukys Wins Again at Chippewa Warm-Up

Well folks, he did it again. You can’t say he’s got the place figured out because he’s shot bigger and he’s shot smaller. Shooting conditions have run the gamut of hot, cold, windy calm and rainy, but he has won the Super Shoot Warm-Up for the last four years in a row. The last shooter to beat him here was Joe Krupa. This year was

definately a warm-up to remember. Great shooting Gene. This is not to say that everyone else rolled over and died as can be seen in the results. Saturday ended like this: Light Varmint 100-Yards Paul Sullivan....................0.2076 Ted Heindselman................ 0.2098 George Carter................... 0.2124

This year we had forty one shooters turn out both days for the match with many different countries represented; South Africa, Canada, Australia, Austria, Italy and the good ole USA. No rain fell during the match which is strange. Everyone at Chippewa Rifle Club thanks the shooters for supporting our match; we enjoyed having you all competing at the range. We cordially invite you back next year. See you then. Gerry Jajowka Match Director

Gene Bukys Bests 250 Shooters For the Win at Kelbly’s 2013 Firearms Industry Super Shoot

Although the weather was very tough on most competitors, the competition could not have been harder. Gene Bukys won his second Super Shoot 2-gun championship by 0.0001 inch in the average of twenty groups over Jeff Gaidos. This year the Super Shoot had 255 participants; 41 of those traveled from foreign countries and 22 were first-time shooters at this event. The first day we shot the LV100; weather was very warm. Fresh from his 2-gun victory at Chippewa, Gene Bukys set the pace with a blistering .1838 agg. Thursday the competitors broke out their 13.5 pound rifles for the HV100. Although still warm enough for shortsleeved shirts, the wind was strong and switched from a tail wind to a quartering head wind. Undeterred by Gene’s teen agg in LV, Jeff Gaidos posted an astonishing 0.1766 in the HV 100. Friday not only featured the heavy guns at 200, but 30/30 weather conditions. By 30/30 I mean 30 mph winds with temperatures in the 30’s. I was privileged to shoot next to Bud Welsh for this stage and he really showed the way. He shot a 0.2417 agg which included a miniscule 0.150 dot in some horrible conditions. This agg, along with a good 100 yard effort gave him the HV Grand victory. Conditions on Saturday for the LV200 were also very tough with a cold head wind keeping all shooters on their toes. Last year’s winner, Jeff Summers, showed the way with a sterling 0.2039 agg. Without a challenging start in the LV100 stage, Jeff would probably have captured his third SS win. All factors considered though, Jeff managed a solid third place finish in the 2-gun. The 2013 Super Shoot is now history and I would like to thank the Kelbly family and other workers who were consummate hosts and made our time very enjoyable. Grand Junction’s 4-Gun Challenge: 1st Leg Results Blustery conditions abounded for the 1st leg of the 4Gun challenge. Dave Gibson started out of the gate winning the LV100 and taking a screaming small group as well. Dasher Dan Dowling took the 200 but when the digits were run it was Mike Beard who bested the 25 shooters for the LV agg. New shooter Larry White took his turn for a win in the HV100 with Larry Leser winning small group. Dave Gibson came back for seconds to win the 200 and Jim Erickson won small group. With the 100 & 200 scores sorted, Larry White won the HV agg. Final numbers were crunched and it was Mike Beard who won the 2Gun. Father and son team Cliff & Brandon McNairy’s two-gun scores were separated only by 0.0001” and husband and wife duo, Bonnie & Tom Stiner placed 13 & 14 respectively. Congratulations to Mike on winning the Two-Gun and a heartfelt thank you to Mark Schwab as score guru extraordinaire. Also kudos to the great target crew and everyone else who makes this so much fun. It’s always a blast shooting at Land’s End. Good times and great people make the match! Mill Creek Rifle Club Group Match Results It was a cold, wet and windy weekend in May for our first match at Bruce Hodgdon Range. Light rain and mist all day Saturday with a high of 45. Northwest winds 10-15mph. Through the fog and rain, 20 strong and stout shooters emerged all singularly focused on winning the match. TK Nollan started off by winning the LV100 followed by Greg King who took the HV100. When the yardages changed to 200, Chet Whitebread took the win in HV while Ron Miller won the LV. When the aggregates were tabulated, Greg King won the HV grand and TK Nollan won the LV grand. The results for everyone are posted. Thanks to all who attended our match. SW Louisiana VFS Match by Wayne Bengston

Twelve shooters showed up for the VFS match and 1 for the factory class. The day started out mostly cloudy, which helped keep the mirage to a minimum. The wind was from the southwest and at our backs. By the time the 100yd match began, the wind was gusting to about 7 mph. Eight of the 12 shooters were able to hang onto a 250 score. At the end local club member Larry Tilley took 1st place. Rookie shooter, Gardner Rose took 2nd and 3rd place was Louisiana State Champion, Mike Louwien. As the temperature rose during the day, the gusts picked up. The 200yd match proved to be a big challenge for everyone. By the end the wind was very switchy and gusting up to 20 mph. No one was able to keep a 250 score. Considering the conditions, Nick Marino was able to win 1st place with a very respectable score. Our rookie Gardner Rose took 2nd place again and

Mike Louwien took 3rd again. Ultimately it was Nick Marino who won the Grand Aggregate with Gardner Rose and Mike Louwien in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Most X’s goes to Kenny Kuperman for the 100, 200 and Grand Agg. The following is a little information about the Grand Ag winners: Nick was experiencing a little trouble during the 100yd match predicting where his shots were going to hit. He changed to another powder and was able to get back on track. This match was Gardner’s third VFS match. He decided to get into BR a year ago and had a gun built. He took possession of his gun early this year and has been doing well with it since. (Way to go Gardner.) Mike jokingly commented about having a “3rd place curse” on him lately. My comment to Mike, just keep shooting, that curse will be broken one way or the other. Overall, we had a very

good match and a good time getting to know each other a little better. I want to thank everyone for participating and a special thanks to the guys who drove from afar. I think I speak for all of us when I say we are very grateful and want to thank Francis Broussard for coming all the way from Lafayette to run the match. Last but not least, thanks to Mike Guillot and Larry Tilley who came early and stayed late to set up the target holders and pick up after the match. Precision Rifleman

2013 Board Meeting Agenda Items Agenda Items submitted for Board review this year are detailed below.

North Central Agenda Items

1. Reduce print issues of Precision Rifleman to 11/year; combine January-February or February-March. Saves $5,000 ($2000 editing expense + $2300 printing cost + $700 postage) Potential loss of ad revenue is unknown. (Submitted by A Brown). 2. Initiate Endowment Series of donation levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold & Platinum Levels with commensurate, complimentary “thank you” items which recognize the contribution level, ie: $1000 Bronze Level includes embroidered/patched Leather Bomber Jacket with logo and level. (By A Brown). 3. Redistrict proposals: A. Redistrict to five (5) regionally defined areas and then declare the remaining three (3) board positions to be “at large” and elected by the Board. At large positions carry same responsibilities and term limits as Regional Directors but their focus and representation is by shooting discipline: Hunter, VFS & Long Range. (Possibly add F-Class). B. Redistrict membership and regions for equal representation by dividing total membership into 8 equal portions and assigning the portions radiating outward from each current regional director’s physical location to establish a baseline. C. Relocate Arkansas and Indiana to Mississippi Valley region for more even membership distribution.(By A Brown). 4. Amend By-Laws to establish a requirement by Life Members for at

least annual contact with the NBRSA office. Life membership will expire if contact is not made annually to ensure database integrity.(By A Brown) 5. Discontinue Life Memberships.(By A Brown). 6. Proposal for establishing a pool of National Event locations across the country in a rotation schedule for the ranges. Establish a set of criteria by which a range will be certified to hold a National Event in a particular NBRSA certified discipline, ie: 50 benches, amenities.) Establish a set of rules of insertion for new member ranges to be added to this pool. (By A Brown). 7. Form an F-Class Bench committee to advance the organization by supporting and publicizing F-Class Bench shooting as a sanctioned class. Clarify rules for the sport and promote the class. (By A Brown). 8. Each region should have an alternate selected for continuity.(A Brown)

Mississippi Valley Agenda Items

1. Merge Hunter & VFS Nationals at least two out of every three years. (Submitted by Scott Pieper & Bud Mundy). 2. Bid St Louis for the 2015 Varmint Nationals for the week prior to the World Shoot in St Louis. (Submitted by B Mundy). 3. Registration fees for 600-Yard matches. It currently stands at $50 regardless of the number of classes being fired. I think the fee should be determined by the individual range not NBRSA. We currently charge 50/60/70 for 1/2/or 3 classes of competition. We will comply with NBRSA rules for their matches but feel this should be a range decision. (By T Balding).

Southwest Agenda Items

1. Modify the current Board of Directors to include a representative of each discipline within our organization, i.e. Directors for VFS, Long Range, Hunter, etc. Leave the current regional Directors as now in place and add new positions for the Director for each discipline. Arguments In Favor of SW1: I do not believe that the regional directs can adequate represent all of the different disciplines within the NBRSA organization. All current regional directors are primarily bench rest group shooters. They do a fine job of running that aspect of our organization, but there is essentially no representation in the governing body of those who shoot other disciplines. If NBRSA wants to continue to govern and grow these other disciplines, then these disciplines need representation by their own participants who understand their needs and desires. (By D Woodward). 2 . In the new rule book on page 55 under number 5, Official Scorer, it reads, “Competitors are not permitted in the scoring area.” We would like it to read: Competitors are not permitted in the scoring area or stat house while the scoring is going on without being accompanied by a Referee or Match Director. Violators will be disqualified from that aggregate. (By Clegg & Maxwell). 3. Arizona Benchrest Shooters at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona would like to be considered for the 2015 NBRSA Group Nationals.(By Clegg & Maxwell). 4. I would like to see the NBRSA make printable certificates for match awards.

*FLASH* NBRSA News *FLASH* NBRSA News *FLASH* NBRSA News *FLASH* NBRSA News *FLASH* These would be downloadable for a Meetings match at Visalia, CA. Contact Tom match director to utilize for awards. I would say 8.5 x 11 size; something suitable to frame for 1st, 2nd 3rd placements per yardage per class & small group. I would like a line to fill in the name of the shooter. This would help the small clubs with lower turn out. (By D Lutke).

Mid-Continent Agenda Items

1. Propose to clarify Section D5.c “Approval of Tournament Dates” in the NBRSA Rules & By-Laws v38. Page 17 states, “No date for a Registered Tournament may be approved if within 7 days of the first day of the National Championship Matches…” Does this apply only to the Group Nationals or does the rule apply to all NBRSA tournaments, ie: Hunter, Long Range & VFS? (By J Snyder).

The Annual General Membership meeting will be held Sept 18 at Fairchance Gun Club in McClellandtown, PA. The meeting will follow the award ceremony. The Annual Board of Directors meeting will be held Sept 14 at Fairchance Gun Club. Commencement time and location specifics will be individually emailed. The Northwest Region Meeting will be held at Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club on Sept 1, 2013 immediately following the match. Contact Eric Stanton for details at 503 887-0352. The Southwest Region Meeting will be held during the Labor Day weekend

Libby for details at 760 774-5256.

Election Results Are In

North Central Region Terry Meyer, Regional Director Rod Brown, Alternate Mid-Continent Region Butch Fjoser, Regional Director Northwest Region Dan Zaccanti, Regional Director Paul Holland, Alternate Gulf Coast Region Scott Hunter, Regional Director Mike Bryant, Alternate Congratulations to those elected. The new term begins Sept 23 following the Group Nationals scheduled this year for Sept 16-21, 2013.

Eastern Region Agenda Items

1. All 2014 NBRSA Group matches with only (2) relays, based upon low-match attendance, will have 37 minutes between the respective matches in lieu of the current 30 minute break. This will allow the shooters adequate time between matches to re-load, clean, correct trigger replacement or other rifle operation issues. (By J Neary).
