Fun In The Sun: Sacramento Group Results by Dan Lutke We shot match four out of seven this weekend at Sacramento Valley Shooting Club. The weather was nice, but hot; 100 on Saturday and 95 on Sunday and of course the normal Ione Triangle wind and mirage. Seventeen shooters shot on Saturday and twenty joined us on Sunday. We shot all 200-yards on Saturday and all 100-yards on Sunday. In the morning we began with the LV200 and Ray Garric took an early lead with .2471. Small group goes to Francis Lee with a .313. In the afternoon we switched to HV200 and conditions were very difficult with wind and mirage. Only one persone did not shoot a one-inch group; Bill Mellor took first place with .3519 and Everet Smith shot the small group of .308. Sunday morning we started early at 8AM and gained five shooters. First up was the HV100 and Dan Lutke was the winner with a .2688 and small group honors went to Michael Taner with .105. We had a new shooter, Pete Kitrinos, who placed a tidy 4th in the HV 100 with .2826. Nicely done, Pete. We finished off Sunday afternoon shooting the LV100 and Bryn Borras took the lead and won with .2500 and also shot the small group .166. Moving to the Grands, Michael Taner won the Heavy Varmint with .3286 and Dan Lutke won the Light Varmint with .3070. When the numbers were tallied, Dan Lutke won the Two-Gun with .3272. Full results are published here for you to see the play by play. Our July match will be published soon and will be the Sloughhouse 200: all four classes at 200 yards. Wyoming State Hunter/VFS Results

June 15-16, 2013

Wyoming State VFS was held in Casper, where we had 15 shooters vie for the first Wyoming State VFS title. The wind was the norm for Casper; from any direction, all the time and at all speeds. The mirage was there to help as well. Tim Naugle came out on top at 100 yards with a 250-21X, Welden Yoder was second with the first X with 25016X and right on his heels was Durwood Hansen with 250-16X. The 200 yard was a bit tricky with Bill Small from Washington state showing how it’s done with 245-5X. Coloradan Dean Thomas scored second with 2474X and Montana’s Russell Cree came in third at 244-4X. The Grand went to Bill Small with a solid 498-19X. Twelve shooters remained for the Sunday continuation of the match and the weather was a carbon copy of Saturday. All the same, three 250’s were shot first by local boy Tim Naugle with 250-16X, then Darrel Leno 250-15X and in third Leonard Hensley with 250-10X. The 200 yard came down to the last match with Leonard Hensley coming out on top with 246-5X for first place. Dean Thomas got second with 245-5X and Tim Naugle earned third with 2453X. The grand went to Leonard Hensley with a 496-15X.

Thanks to all that came to shoot and the target crew and scorer. We would like to also thank all the stores that donated food for lunches too; Smiths Food, Loaf & Jug, Coke, Safeway Foods and Albertsons. We appreciate their support of benchrest in our community. Todd Tyler Leads 1st Half of New Mexico State by Mark Motsko A warm June greeted 23 shooters for the first half of the New Mexico State Championship in Raton, NM. Wind played the great equalizer as there was nothing blowing steady or in the same direction for very long, however 2013 United States World Team member Todd Tyler was able to consistently read the conditions and ended the weekend in first place in the Unlimited/Sporter two gun. On Saturday, 13 competitors shot the rail gun at 100/200 yards, while an additional 10 competitors shot a separate but concurrent heavy varmint match. In the morning Unlimited session, Larry Baggett started things off with a .171, and Roy Damron was right behind him with a .177. Baggett’s .171 was the small group for the U100. They cooled off a little in match two while Ed Maxwell from Phoenix followed his .202 in match one with a .243 to take the lead. Todd Tyler shot the second match’s small group of .234 to follow Maxwell into second place. Meanwhile, Jim Hemmert, who had forgotten some equipment and even considered heading back to Kansas on Friday afternoon, started the Heavy Varmint shoot with a .215 to take an early lead. Randy Pumphrey’s .123 in the second match vaulted him in to the lead and won him small group for the HV 100. But Hemmert wasn’t out of the match yet. In the third unlimited match, Maxwell, Tyler and Baggett kept their 1-2-3 positions respectively. Ed Adams shot the small group of .269 as the winds began to pick up and vary, but the story of the morning‘s unlimited match was that of Cindy Ito. A .274 in the third match had her in fourth place, and a match small .234 in the fourth match bumped her up to third place knocking Baggett down to fourth. Maxwell and Tyler did all they could to hang on, but a blistering .194 in the late morning final match win sealed the U100 victory for Ito with a .2644. Maxwell finished with a .2710, and Tyler came in third with a .2910. Back in the HV 100, Randy Pumphrey remained in the lead after the third match with a .252. Steve Murphy’s .154 moved him into second, bumping Hemmert into third place. But in the fourth

match, Hemmert retook the lead with a .162, jumping over both Pumphrey and Murphy. A slip of .301 in the fifth match by Hemmert left the door open a sliver for Murphy, and even though he shot the fifth match’s small group .279, he couldn’t overcome Hemmert’s lead, and settled for second place. Pumphrey finished third and Dr. Bart Carl came in fourth. After the Whittington Center crews moved the target boards out to 200 yards and everyone moved their flags (and had a quick lunch), the 10 shot Unlimited 200 yard shoot and 200 yard Heavy Varmint shoot got underway. Ed Maxwell kept his hot hand, opening with a .613 in the blustery conditions. Ed Adams was right behind with a .628. Adams took the lead in the second match shooting a .731, with Todd Tyler right behind with a .719. Bob Brackney’s .590 won the small group for the match, moving him into third place. Tyler and Adams switched places after the third match, with Tyler moving into first place. Brackney held onto third and Larry Baggett moved into fourth. Jim Hemmert started the 200 yard HV match the same way he ended the 100, in first place. But Aaron French and Steve Murphy weren’t far behind. Murphy’s HV 200 small group of .360 in the second match moved him into first place, and this time he would not relinquish the lead, fighting off Hemmert and Matt Busse of Oklahoma over the next three matches. Murphy’s .4009 agg was followed by Hemmert’s .4384, and Busse’s .4770. The same three shooters won first, second and third in the HV Grand Aggregate, with Murphy’s .3216, Hemmert’s, .3380, and Busse’s .4529. By the fourth match of the U200, the winds were coming in from all directions, and some of the shooters said it seemed like at times, the wind was coming from every direction at once. But that didn’t stop Todd Tyler from holding onto the lead with a .983. Larry Baggett leap-frogged Adams into second with a .978. Saving some of the best shooting for the end of the day, Bob Brackney won small group for the U200 with a .472. Six benches away, Tyler closed Saturday with a .790, but was able to hold off Baggett and his

.477 to win the U200 .3923 to Baggett’s .4360. Brackney finished third. In the Unlimited Grand Aggregate, Todd Tyler wins with a .3417, Larry Baggett continued his success in Raton with a .3647 and Ed Adams rounded out the top three with a .3988. Sunday morning not five minutes before the start of the Sporter nary a flag was moving. It wouldn’t stay that way For the third time in three matches, Jim Hemmert started things off in first place with a .238 at 200 yards. It was the small group for the entire Sporter 200 contest. Albuquerque’s Ron Lax was second with a .476. Hemmert held on to first with a .325 on his second target. Recently retired Raton Match Director, and now Mid-West Regional Director Jack Snyder moved into second with a .253. In the third match, Hemmert began to at fade, but his .822 was still good enough to keep the lead. Snyder held second with a .608 and Ed Maxwell was third. In the fourth match, Snyder took the lead and never looked back, holding off Maxwell and Ed Adams, while Hemmert slipped to sixth place. Whittington crews moved the target boards back to 100 yards while the competitors took an early lunch and the Sporter 100 yard match started Mike Cordes from Tonkawa, Oklahoma came racing out of the gate with a .176 to lead things off, with Steve Murphy right behind with a .197. Larry Baggett took the lead from Cordes in the second match with Todd Tyler taking the small group with a .169. Murphy’s .182 put him in the lead after three with Jim Hemmert’s .125 moving him into second and winning small group for the afternoon. Murphy and Hemmert remained in 1-2 after the fourth match, with Larry Baggett’s .138 keeping him within striking distance at third. But when the dust settled, Baggett’s .251 couldn’t surpass Murphy’s .227 and his winning first in the Sporter 100. Baggett finished second, followed by Ed Maxwell and Hemmert. In the Sporter Grand, Murphy took first with a .2732 with Maxwell second with a .2752 and Baggett third with a .2831. So the first half of the New Mexico State Championship finished early Sunday afternoon

September, 2013 Precision Rifleman with Todd Tyler winning the two gun with a .3164, Baggett in second with .3239, and Ed Adams with .3424. Kane Two-Gun Is The Don Rosetti Show by Jack Neary July 14-15, 2013

Seventy-one shooters attended this year’s NBRSA Eastern Region Pennsylvania State Championship (and pie eating contest) at the Kane Fish and Game Club this past week. Warm hospitality and great food continues to place the annual Kane match as the largest attended NBRSA Group match in the Eastern Region each year… by far! Thank you everyone for coming and supporting this great match! It was certainly great to see all age groups represented from 11 year old Henry Miller to 102 year old Stan Buchtel! Here’s the recap from our match! Saturday Morning HV100 and fresh from his recent $500+ hair cut, Don Rosetti put on quite a shooting clinic by winning both Grand Aggregates! Don started off his flawless weekend winning the HV100 with an excellent .1600 agg. In 2nd place Milt Craven continues to impress everyone with a very fine .1900. Al Auman, who consistently shoots well, finished 3rd with a .2112” agg. Hal Drake showed why he is a top shooter everywhere he plays finished 4th with a .2166 .agg. And Don Jeffers put together a fine .2248 agg for 5th place. After a very hearty lunch of Italian Sausage, Sloppy Joes and…..PIE…we were met with more very mild conditions for the start of the LV100 agg. Saturday afternoon LV100 Agg. Mr. “Perfect Hair” Don Rosetti started to roll with another great agg of .1636 for 1st place. Pando Vasilovski, our Safety Director, finished 2nd with a fine .1814 agg. The ever pleasant, Howie Levy finished 3rd with an .1850 agg, despite accidently hitting the trigger on his first group which was only a .201. Geez… How lucky can he get? Troy Trabacchi, finished 4th with a close .1880 agg. Up and coming Chris Hooks finished 5th with a very nice .2060 agg as well. A special note of congratulations goes to 11-year old Henry Miller with his very nice .158 group he shot on his 4th match during the LV100 agg. I know his Dad, Scott, was very proud! Won’t be long until Henry starts putting a string of these little groups together!

Each of the shooters were treated to a fine dinner put on by the club Saturday evening. The annual Saturday night party on the porch kicked-off without any hitches. Always a great time to spend with all our friends who come to the Kane match from near and far each year! It was great to also see several of our Eastern Region shooters attend the Kane match, despite recent health issues. We will keep each of you in all our prayers! On to the 200yd stage. For the LV200 conditions were much more challenging on Sunday morning with some mild switching winds as we started the match. James Welsh showed us the way on Sunday morning with a very nice .2185 agg. Rob MacClennan displayed some very fine shooting all weekend with his 2nd place .2237 agg. Always a top achiever, Rob Kenderdine, finished 3rd with a .2457 agg. Don Rosetti continued to stay in the hunt a solid .2481 agg for a 4th place finish and Peter Smith shot a very respectable .2526 agg for 5th place. Super big thanks to Rangemaster Roger Gausman and Ken Kane for keeping all of us safe and on-point, as well as the entire membership of the Kane Fish and Game Club for their tireless efforts in making all of us feel so welcome each year! It’s no secret why all benchrest shooter’s love coming to Kane each year! Can’t wait for next year’s match! See you there! On a sad note, this was to be Bob Kenderdine’s last match at Kane. He passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 29 near Wellsville, NY. He was born March 22, 1960 in Abington, PA and was a self-employed logger. He was both a member of the NBRSA and the Genesee Rod & Gun Club. He was a well known overall great guy and he will be greatly missed.

George Lozano Wins at Visalia...by Bill Mellor The Visalia June match was a heavy Varmint club match and a five shot Unlimited which is part of the California State Championship Four Gun. The three Varmint classes will be held during Labor Day weekend. The 28 competitors attending, had fair conditions and the temperature stayed below 95 degrees all weekend. Some shooters had a rough time, I have never seen so many equipment problems that resulted in not getting five shots on the record target along with a few crossfires. Lou Murdica had a good start and won the Heavy Varmint 100 with a .2070 aggregate. Jim Obrien won the small group trophy with a .114. The wind picked up for the Heavy Varmint 200 and started coming from different directions. The 200-yard first place trophy was taken by Dennis Thornbury shooting a .3152 aggregate. Marty Childers shot a .368 group to win the small group trophy. Norm Jeffery placed second in the 100-yard match and second in the 200-yard match and came out on top of the pack winning the Heavy varmint Grand with a .2792 aggregate. Don Nielson was second with a .2966 and Tom Libby placed third shooting a .3074. Lou Murdica had a good start again and won the Unlimited 100-match. Lou wasn’t messing around this time and shot a .1714 aggregate to win the first place trophy. Dan Lutke shot a .089 screamer to win the small group trophy. Yellowstone: Becker Wins Hunter - Foster Takes VFS Mild temperatures and calm winds greeted the 9 HBR shooters and 10 VFS shooters at the May 25-26 benchrest match at the Yellowstone Rifle Club in Billings Montana. Temperatures in the 60s and 70s and moderate 5mph winds allowed the competitors to post some great scores. Things got underway on Saturday morning with the 100-yard HBR match. As to be expected in good conditions, the short range winners were decided by the X count and we’d have to wait for the 200-yard match to separate the men from the boys. Darrel Leno took first place with a 250-19X. Second was Russell Cree with a 250-16X followed by Scott Carpenter with a 250-15X. After a great lunch put on by Augustina Cree, we rotated five benches and moved on to the 200-yard HBR match. The winds remained mild, but started up an unpredictable side-to-side switching pattern that caused more than a few dropped points. First place went to Ray Becker with a 246-2X, Jack Foster was nipping at his heals with a 245-2X that took second place and Tim Naugle posted a 243-8X for third. Ray Becker’s 200-yard performance gave him the edge to pull off the HBR grand aggregate first place win with a 496-13X. Jack Foster took home the second place trophy with a 495-14X and Darrel Leno held on for third with a 493-21X, which also gave him the prize for the most X’s. We returned to the range on Sunday morning to commence with the 200yard VFS match and found that the good conditions were still holding out for us. Don Carter took a leave of absence from his annual Montana prairie dog safari to get some paper-punching time in at the range and showed that he was ready to get serious with a nice 249-7X that took first place. Jack Foster was not far behind with a 249-3X for second, and third place went to Tim Naugle with a 248-5X. Augustina refueled everyone with another tasty lunch and then we rotated another five benches and started up the 100-yard VFS match to end the weekend festivities. The Benchrest Gods must have been taking it easy on us because the flags barely moved the whole match

and some great scores were put on the board. Tim Naugle came in first with a 250-18X. New shooter Ken Small took second with a 250-17X, which was an outstanding performance from a guy with limited previous shooting experience. In fact, Ken had just looked through a scope for the first time a few days before the match. Ken is a long time friend of Don Carter, who brought him to the match and obviously taught him well. Russell Cree won the tie for third out of four shooters who posted a 250-16X score. Jack Foster’s near perfect score of 499-19X gave him the first place VFS grand aggregate trophy. Tim Naugle came in second with a 498-23X and Don Carter took third with a 498-20X. Durwood Hansen put up the most X’s in VFS with a count of 25. This weekend broke the ice for three new shooters – previously mentioned Ken Small, Bob Lunder, and yours truly. Let’s keep this momentum going. This is a great sport with so many friendly people and good competition. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to the match hosts for all of their hard work and thanks to everyone who attended. *Out of Class (VFS). Mill Creek Range Hosts Kansas State Hunter/VFS June 1-2, 2013

Best shooting conditions we have had in recent memory. The scores reflect it too. Unfortunately, we had a very small hunter crowd. I understand life happens but only four? Jason Stanley and Ron Shultz stayed even almost shot for shot all weekend. In the end it was Jason coming out on top in Hunter and the Two Gun. Arlyn Copely ruled Saturday’s VFS. Sunday’s state VFS started out at 200 yards and Copely shot a 2504X but he could not stay around for the 100. That opened the door for the rest of us. Ron Shultz took 100 yard honors and Mike McFarland the Grand. East-West Show Me from St Louis by Scott Pieper Larry Cost rides his super feet to an overwhelming Win in the Two Gun; nobody stood a chance once he got rolling. There were grumbles and moans when some of the shooters heard the new rule at BRRC making super feet or their equivalent mandatory under rest points to protect the bench tops, but Scott had plenty on hand to loan out making sure that everyone was on the same playing field. After approving the new rule, BRRC has been in the process of replacing all the bench tops on the main competition range in preparation for the upcoming 2015 World Team match. There were 15 new tops in place in time for the East/West and when questioned, many of the shooters that had to shoot on the old benches verses the new over the weekend said they noticed the difference and preferred the newer smoother tops and that their feet stuck just fine, Typical summer match for St. Louis, HOT and MUGGY. Less than a normal turn out for the East/West even in a non point year, we only had 56 shooters which makes the accountant squeal knowing you spent and planned for 75. Glad next year will be a point year and with it being a qualifier for the Worlds that will be in the US we expect it to be as big as a National event. To prepare we have already got Nancy Scarbrough on board as the match Director and she will be handling all the preparations. Saturday started with the LV100 and Larry Costa took the honors in first with a .1806, Bob Scarbrough, Jr followed up with a .1988 and Kip Jones got third with a .2116. Bob Scarbrough Jr got the small group with a .090. After a fine lunch we changed over to HV100 and again Larry Costa got first with a .1646, Dwight Scott was second with a .2198 and Cecil Peterson rounded out the top three with a .2274. Steve Turner got the small group with a .103. Sunday, we started with the HV200 and Jerry Kloeppel came out of the middle of the pack to take first with a .2367, Bob Scarbrough Jr. got second with a .2616 and Larry Costa got third with a .2630. Small group was Dwight

Scott shooting a .266. After filling everyone’s bellies we fired up the light guns and it was Larry Costa once again taking first with a .1912, Greg King in second with a .2526 and Dave Coots third with a .2617. Small group was Larry Costa shooting a .246. In the light combined aggs. Larry Costa was first with a .1859, Kip Jones second with a .2412, Greg King third with a .2455, Bob Scarbrough Jr.fourth with a .2493 and fifth was Chuck Hern with a .2574. In the Heavy gun combined agg. it was Larry Costa first with a .2138, Dwight Scott second with a .2465, Mark Harpenau third with a .2513, Jerry Kloeppel fourth with a .2549 and Cecil Peterson fifth with a .2618. The two gun and overall winner that took home the Crystal goblet – Larry Costa with a Grand Agg of .1999, in second was Bob Scarbrough Jr. with a .2609, third was Mark Harpenau with a .2619, fourth was Kip Jones with a .2626, fifth was Ron Hoehn with a .2630. Top twenty shooters received commemorative patches. Thanks to all who attended and all who helped make this a successful East/West match. Hope all that attended had a memorable time and will return next year. I have already started planning for 2014. Lets all help Bench Rest grow bring a friend to your next shoot. Prairie Dog Target Club: North Central Region Unlimited/Sporter Rodney Brown Digs Deep to Win the Two-Gun...by Mel Klasi Those of us who arrived on Thursday for practice and tuning were greeted by 50 mph wind gusts and rain that lasted until 7:00 AM Saturday morning. Those who arrived later had an interesting drive into PDTC. Isn’t that right Rodney? After finding a ditch deep enough to sink his Chevy into and two tractor pulls later to get him out, Rod made it to the range. On Saturday morning the rain ended and the north winds let up slightly; so after letting the grass dry up a bit we set our flags and started shooting about 11:00 AM. The temperatures stayed in the 50s throughout the day. Rodney Brown proceeded to win the 10 shot Unlimited 100 yard match and also the Unlimited 200 yard.

On Sunday we again started the day with the temperature near 50 but the sun was shining and the winds had switched around to the south. About half of the 14 shooters took advantage of the new rules for Sporter class and

shot various 22s. Dan Dowling and Bill Pond shot the venerable 222 Remington while most of the other 22s were the 100 short PPC. We started the Sporter match at 200 yards and Rodney Brown won with the only aggregate in the twos, then Rodney won the Sporter 100 where only two aggregates were in the 2s. After we finished shooting the temperature finally neared 70 degrees and the winds let up. Rodney Brown won both the Sporter and the Unlimited aggregates on his way to winning the two gun with an aggregate of 0.3390, Bud Schalles was 2nd in the two gun with an agg of 0.4077, and Bob Prather took 3rd in the two gun with a 0.4725 agg. Pat Deckert wasn’t able to attend to her usual duties of scoring and computing so Don Deckert did the scoring and Dave Tunbridge did the computer work. Get well soon Pat! Something needs to be said about the Deckert’s and sooner is better than later. This awesome couple has hosted benchrest competition for as far back as I can remember. They are the most gracious and humble people you could ever hope to meet. Pat’s health took a turn for the worse recently, but that didn’t stop her or Don from hosting yet again a most wonderful match. They are salt of the earth

people and those of us who regularly attend Porcupine matches know that we are all the better for knowing them. There are few ranges which leave you feeling good with great memories like Porcupine and it is all because of the hard work that Pat & Don do year after year. On behalf of all the Porcupine shooters, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are truly amazing people. Next up is the 100/200/300 Heavy Varmint Prairie Dog Shoot and the 100/200 North Central Regional Light Varmint. Alpen Cup 2013: Toni Negri Memorial On June 8-9, 2013, eighty shooters gathered in Dobbiaco, Italy for the Alpen Cup Competition, 30th edition, Shooters came from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. This Edition was called the “Toni Negri Memorial” in respect and affection to our friend competitor, organizer of past Alpen Cup events who passed away last year. The new President of Dobbiaco Shooting Club is Toni’s son, Francesco Negri. This edition was sunny with some running clouds every day, Usual winds of this mountain area and temperatures were ranging from 8°C to 28°C one day. The new configuration range due to the Army works surprised more than one shooters as the winds are difficult to follow in their new place. Americo Angaran and his staff, conducted the competition smoothly helped by the choice to make one day for every class/distance plus warm up. The “hot point” i.e. the restaurant was busy around Walter Baur and his crew. The award ceremony was honored by the presence of Guido Bacher, Dobbiaco Community Mayor and ex President of Dobbiaco Shooting Club. Following are the placements of NBRSA members who attended this event. Full results are posted at www.eurobenchrestnews.com. Mike Conry Wins the 2013 Texas Shootout As the sun rose on Midland Saturday morning, the weather forecast was for light winds and temps in the low 100s. As the temperature rose, the winds cooperated all morning for the Sporter 100. Getting the win was Gary Bristow posting a .2124. Brad Calhoun shot the small group, a nice .102. At the start of the HV100, shooters noticed that something was amiss in the north. After match one, the shooters broke for lunch and they scrambled to cover all they owned as what they saw in the north was a frontal boundary bearing down on the range looking like one of those dust storms out of the movie Cleopatra! As we ate, (nobody hurrying) the front blew through, leaving somewhat windy conditions to finish the afternoon. Nobody told Gary Bristow, as he continued to shoot really little, winning the yardage with a stunning (for the conditions) .2098. Steve Murphy shot the small group, a .140. Sunday morning again revealed nice conditions and Mike Conry took advantage of them winning the HV200 with a .1865 and shooting the small group, a nice.224. After lunch, complete with peach cobbler and homemade ice cream, those of us that didn’t flounder shot the Sporter 200. The winds stayed somewhat light, however mirage became a force to contend with. Again coming out on top was Mike Conry, with a .2315 and Charles Huckeba shot the small group for the yardage, a little .280. Gary Bristow won the HV Grand with a .2499 and Mike Conry won the Sporter Grand, .2290. In the Two-Gun, the winner of the 2013 Texas Shootout was Mike Conry with a .2423. Thanks go to all the folks that endured the heat and worked really hard to put on this match, as without all of you, these matches just wouldn’t happen! Jack Neary Wins the Briar Hail Memorial The 3rd Annual Briar Hail Memorial Shoot was held on June 22nd and 23rd at the Shelby County Deer Hunters Association near Sidney Ohio. Twenty-one shooters enjoyed a manicured range and great food for the weekend. As always, horseshoe was a challenge, even with light 5-10 mph winds. Saturday dawned bright and beautiful. As the day wore on, temperatures reached near 90 degrees, but humidity was not very high. Greg Walley took 1st place in the 100 yard Light Varmint. Melvyn Newransky shot the small group (.129). After an hour lunch break, everyone readied for the 100 yard Heavy Varmint to begin. DeWayne Wood shot a scorching .2064 to win the yardage. DeWayne Wood fired the small group at .124. Sunday morning was another hot day with increasing winds. The 200 yard Heavy Varmint was a challenge to many, but Brad Lewis (.2573) won the yardage. Small group belonged to Dominic Grunas (.303). The afternoon saw changing winds and hot temperatures. Despite ever changing conditions Jack Neary won the 200 yard Light Varmint with a .2602 and shot the small group too. Jack Neary won the Two-Gun aggregate with a .2507. Congratulations Jack! Ted Heindselman finished second shooting a .2698 and finishing the lineup was Brad Lewis with a .2882. St Louis Score: Rippee Wins VFS, Hemkens Wins Hunter June 16, 2013

The conditions for this match were just about as good as we ever get at our range, a very light switching wind. Most competitors felt they should have shot better than they did. In the VFS class at 100 yards the winner was Tom Rippee with a 280-18X, William Haynes actually tied with the same score but Tom got the win by way of the tie-breaker. Jeff Conover placed third with a 250-15X. At 200 yards the winner was Tom Rippee with 249-8X, 2nd was Brad Hawkey with 249-6X and 3rd was Jeff Conover with 246-7X. In the grand Tom Rippee was the winner with 499-26X, Tom was on a pretty good pace at challenging the NBRSA grand agg record and only missed by a couple of X’s and then missed the very last “Ten” of the day. Our VFS competitors will sure be glad when Tom shoots that barrel out! So, 2nd in the grand was Brad Hawkey with 498-19X and 3rd was Jeff Conover with 496-22X. In the Hunter class the 100 yard we had two competitors with 250-14X and after the tie-breaker Joe Hemkens wins and Tom Sisler was 2nd and in 3rd place was Jerry Kloeppel with 24917X. At 200 yards Joe Hemkens won with 249-8X, 2nd was Tom Sisler with 245-2X and Wayne Corley placed 3rd with 244-5X. In the grand the winner was Joe Hemkens with 499-22X, 2nd was Tom Sisler with 495-16X and 3rd was Wayne Corley with 492-15X. Incidentally, Joe was shooting his “trusty” Remington 700 rifle. Northern Colorado Benchrest by LuAnn Dill Howdy to all readers, Wile E Coyote here. I was on scene for Northern Colorado Benchrest Shooters’ June Sporter and Heavy Varmint matches. Our Sporter match was the first leg of the Northern Colorado 4-Gun. Twenty two brave souls came out to make bug holes in 20-30 mph winds. Each and every shooter, including myself, was covered in a layer of dirt. Cleaning patches and rags flew around the loading barn like a tornado. Targets where clamped to the wailing wall as the wind tried to steal those too. Despite the conditions our ladies, gentlemen, and children held their heads high and showed the wind the Coyotes would not be held back. Flags were staked and bungeed, hats were tightened over ears, and targets were stapled thanks to our wonderful target crew; not one target was stolen from the backer board. We started with the 1st leg of our 4-gun, Sporter Varmint on Saturday morning at 100 yards. While many a shooter struggled to keep their groups small and tight the father and son duo of Cliff and Brandon McNairy fought for the top ranks. When the final tally came

in Cliff McNairy won with a Grand Agg of 0.3586. Good job to Cliff for winning the smallest group as well at 0.1760. After a much needed lunch break to hide from the wind for a few minutes and wash the dirt from our teeth, the shooting resumed. First relay started the 200 yards Sporter Varmint praying the wind would give everyone a break. Apparently the wind dance I did for these guys was ignored by the weather gods. As the evening crept closer the match came to a close with Rodney Brown in 1st place with a Grand Agg of 0.4232. Roger Tillery overcame the wind with the small group at 0.502. Twenty two wind beaten shooters then rotated benches and gave a sigh of relief to be done with the wind for the day. Of course our Colorado weather was kind enough to stop blowing after all shooting and range related activities were done. For those in campers their night wasn’t spent rocking. Sunday morning greeted the shooters with bright clear skies and no wind. Mr. Tillery whipped up a breakfast for the early birds. After everyone was gathered and dirt free, the Heavy Varmint

200 yards match was started. With full bellies, a good night’s sleep and sun in their faces the shooters went to the line and gave it their best. Everyone was determined to make up for the windy nightmare of the day before. Roger Tillery was our winner with a Grand Agg of 0.2130 and the small group winner. His Screamer small group was 0.0760. Good shooting…wonder what he put in that breakfast. Time flew by us as we all enjoyed the day and moved on to the final match of the weekend; Heavy Varmint 100 yards. A light breeze helped to keep us comfortable as the smell of gun powder filled the air. When it finally cleared Larry White was standing in 1st place with a Grand Agg of 0.2895 and the small group of 0.305. Good shooting Larry…did you have some of that breakfast too? All in all this coyote thinks it was a good shooting weekend and enjoyed seeing everyone come out. Before wrapping up I’d like to offer congrats to our Sporter 100/200 Grand Agg winner: Rodney Brown 0.4093. Congrats to our Heavy Varmint 100/200 Grand Agg winner: Roger Tillery 0.2599. Lastly, can I get a round of applause of the winner of the weekend, Roger Tillery with a Grand Agg of 0.3517. Everyone is welcome so please come out and join us, don’t forget our 26th Annual Firewalker on September 7-8 with a top notch steak dinner on Saturday. Join early as number of shooters is limited. Lastly a howling salute to our office staff, target crew and match director and all the other folks who chip in to make these shoots happen. World Benchrest Championship #12 by Ann Brummel The seed of an idea in 2007 was germinated in 2009 and now in October 2013 has come to maturity - The 12th World Benchrest Championships (WBC12). In early 2009 Rob Carnell and Barry Warwick approached Paul McNabb, the SSAA Sydney and now NSW President regarding the prospect of Sydney hosting the prestigious event at Silverdale. Enthusiasm allied with Paul’s advertising expertise produced a video that was to become the centrepiece of the bid to the delegates to the World body. The goal was attained and things swung into action with the formation of the Committee of Management. This is only the fourth time the Championships have come south of the equator, but the second time in Australia, the first Brisbane in 1995 (WBC3). Here we are literally hours away from “Commence Fire” and the small but willing work force including those from outside Sydney and even interstate are putting the final touches on the range and ready to take their place to run the events all on a volunteer basis even paying their own way to the venue. The assembly of competitors from fourteen countries really highlights the fact Benchrest knows no boundaries by way of physical abilities, age or gender as the whole spectrum is covered. This is best illustrated by the fact more than a few competitors carry Senior Citizens’ cards and the leading light for the ladies is Vera Carter from Canada who will be defending the World 100 yard aggregate title she won in France in 2011. Juniors are also at the forefront – Australia’s lead shooter is Stuart Foate who during one of the events will between targets C and D and D and E will be locked away with a Dept. of Education supervisor sitting his General Mathematics HSC paper. South Africa also boasts a sharp shooting junior in their team in the form of Mario Coetzer. Australia is privileged to have in attendance one of the “founding fathers” of the Championship, Mr Walt Berger, who along with Herve Du Plessis and Skip Gordon made shoulder to

Photo courtesy of Sporting Shooters Association of Australia shoulder international competition a reality. Mr Berger is the non playing Captain of Team USA which also boast luminaries Gene Bukys and the writers of two books on rifle accuracy and benchrest that all shooters should read – Tony Boyer and Mike Ratigan. SSAA NSW and Sydney Branch wish all the competitors, good luck, small groups and know they will enjoy our harbour city. As was the case in the other eleven WBCs comradeship will flourish, lasting friendship made, others refreshed and the exchange of ideas and techniques will enhance not only benchrest but the shooting sports as a whole.

Member Bio: Ann Brummel

Ann Brummell of South Coast, NSW. Throughout the years, Ann has won countless state and national titles. Her most memorable national title came in 1974 when she shot a .2701 to win the HV 100 yard aggregate, a score that stood for five years. In 1981, she won the national LV 100 and obtained the last point necessary to join the elite group of benchresters inducted into the Benchrest Hall of

Fame. She has competed in the USA on numerous occasions and, after securing coveted placements at prestigious events, has made a name for herself in the benchrest world. In 1981 she was invited to lecture and coach shooters from all over the world at the Benchrest School No. 2 held in Pennsylvania. As well as lecturing and coaching, Ann has contributed to the shooting sports, particularly benchrest, in a number of other ways. At one point she wrote for the ASJ on both club and national competitions. She was a range officer at Silverdale for 16 years, the national benchrest secretary from 1976 to 1984, the benchrest vice president for two years and was the national benchrest chair for nine years. During her time as chair, she finalised and printed the Benchrest Rule Book No. 1, which was the first such rule book published by the Sporting Shooters Assn of Australia. When it comes to actually shooting, Ann admits that she is methodical, especially with reloading equipment and the cleaning of her barrels and always uses a time clock at matches. Don Judd Memorial at Minnetonka Submitted by Scott Moser July 14-15, 2013

Since having to cancel our first match of the year in April due to snow we’ve come a long way. With fifteen shooters aboard we had a great match and lots of fun. World record holder Jerry Lahr won the two gun. Remember Jerry holds the Unlimited 5-shot group record at 100-yards which was shot on 8/18/2012 at this very range. It looks like he’s still got the stuff. In addition to bragging rights, Jerry also won a brand new Bartlein barrel; one of two donated for this match by Bartlein. The winner of the other barrel was John Hall. A heartfelt thank you to Bartlein for their generous gifts. We are very grateful for their support. Congratulations to Jerry. Here are the results. Larry “Panchito” Baggett says ‘Muchas Gracias’ in Raton Twenty eight shooters braved warm temperatures in Raton, New Mexico during the Muchas Gracias monthly match in July, while consistent winds allowed for more scores in the “one’s and two’s” than have been seen a while. The wind didn’t start until midmorning and that allowed shooters to set the pace early during the 100 yard light varmint match. Fran Ito started things off with a .146. The first score in the threes wasn’t seen until Ed Adams’ .310 had him in 20th place. In the second match, Lester Bruno took the lead from Ito with a small group of .084. Bruno also took home some hardware for that small group of the light varmint match. Ito remained in second, and Steve Murphy was third, but Bruno couldn’t hold on to the lead shooting a .384 in the third match. Tom Libby’s

.153 put Tom in the lead with Charles Huckeba in second. Huckeba’s .103 in the fourth match leapfrogged him ahead of Libby and had him primed for the morning win, with Libby in second and Speedy Gonzalez in third. All three shooters shot sub-two’s pulling away from the pack, but Huckeba couldn’t hold on, as his .477 in the fifth match dropped him to fourth place. Gonzalez’ small group for the match, a .142, wasn’t enough to jump ahead of Libby and his .156. Libby wins the light varmint with a .1938 aggregate, Gonzalez finishes second with a .2116 and Steve Murphy’s .2472 edging out Huckeba for the 3rd place trophy. Hector Elias Jr. came in fifth. Libby was asked if he brought any other California shooters with him since there hasn’t been a lot of people

by Mark Motsko

traveling from the west coast. “Only the ones in my head,” Libby replied. Hopefully his win will encourage more west coasters to travel to the world class NRA Whittington Center to shoot benchrest. After lunch the temperatures continued to climb into the 90’s, and the winds shifted to blow out of the south creating a cross breeze that the shooters took advantage of in the 100 yard heavy varmint match. Speedy Gonzalez kept his hot hand going with the small group of .192 in the first match. Gonzalez was bumped to second when Todd Tyler shot a .145 to take the lead. Ed Adams was in third place. Tonkawa, Oklahoma’s own Mike Cordes shot the small group in match three, a .128. But Ed Adams’ .188 gave him the lead that he would not relinquish for the

rest of the match, even though Larry ‘Ponchito’ Baggett gave him a run for his money. Baggett shot a .135 to Adams’ .185 in the fourth match, separating their aggregate score by just over three one hundredths of an inch. Britt Robinson took home the trophy for small group in the heavy varmint with a .099 on his fourth target. In the fifth and final match for the day, ‘Ponchito’ Baggett shot a .126, but Adams’ .214 was enough to hold him off .2088 to Baggett’s .2156 aggregate. Todd Tyler took home the trophy for third place with a .2444, Gonzalez and Robinson rounded out the top five. On Sunday at 200 yards, the winds weren’t quite as forgiving, but some small groups were still scored. Todd Tyler started the Light Varmint aggregate with a match and aggregate small group of .348, with Ed Adams right behind him with a .394. Adams took the lead after the second match, with Lester Bruno in 3rd. The same three shooters kept their places after the third match as well. Mike Cordes’ .466 small group in the fourth match moved him up from 15th to 9th, but Larry ‘Panchito’ Bagget leap-frogged Adams, Tyler and Bruno to take the lead going into the fifth and final match of the morning. But a .676 by ‘Panchito’ opened the door for Lester Bruno’s .395 to take the 200 yard trophy, pushing Baggett into second. Adams took 3rd. Bruno also took home some hardware for the Light Varmint Grand Aggregate with a .2706 for the two guns. Baggett finished second, and Adams 3rd. Storm clouds began forming on the horizon to the northeast of the range at the beginning of the Heavy Varmint, luckily the weather held off until after

the awards were presented. Fran Ito started the aggregate off with a .434 with Todd Tyler and Tom Libby and Charles Huckeba close behind. Libby took the lead in the second match winning the small group trophy with a .238. That group was enough to help him fend off Ito, Tyler and Britt Robinson to win the aggregate. Ito was in second place after the third and fourth match, but Tyler was right on his tail, finally overtaking Ito after the fifth and final match of the shoot. Libby finished with a .2396, to Tyler’s .2572, and Ito’s .2907. Tyler’s second place in the Heavy 200 was enough to give him the first place trophy for the Heavy Varmint Two Gun Grand Aggregate with a .2508. Britt Robinson came in second with a .2698, and ‘Panchito’ Baggett took 3rd. After all the scores were tallied, it was Larry ‘Panchito’ Baggett taking home the first place trophy for the Two Gun Grand Aggregate with a .2758. Ed Adams placed second, and Tom Libby and the voices inside his head came in 3rd. As usual, the target crew worked a flawless match and Tony Gallegos was excellent as match caller, even though he almost missed the start on Saturday by oversleeping! Mac Clark Memorial at Yellowstone by Ryan Lienemann Hansen Wins Hunter & Team Small Dominates VFS

We had a good turnout for the Yellowstone Rifle Club Mac Clark Memorial benchrest match on June 22nd and 23rd. In the hunter class, 12 shooters battled the gusty winds on Saturday and 19 shooters duked it out on Sunday for the varmint for score trophies. Temperatures hovered in the 60s and 70s throughout the weekend. The 100-yard HBR match was the first order of business on Saturday morning. The conditions for the first few targets were pretty good, but during the latter part of the match the flags were beginning to behave mischievously. It was the beginning of a challenging day. Father/son duo Bill and Sam Small tied for first and second place with a pair of 250-16X’s, suggesting that the ability to judge the wind is hereditary, or else they have the ability to communicate telepathically with each other and synchronize their shots. Tim Naugle came in a close third with a 250-14X. As usual, Augustina Cree put out a spread for lunch that tasted great and provided the nourishment we would need to make it through the afternoon. After lunch the shooters rotated five benches, reset their flags and got ready for the 200-yard HBR match. The nature of the winds didn’t improve any in the afternoon. In fact, their attitude went from general crabbiness and disrespect in the morning to downright mean and hostile in the afternoon. The firing line conversations weren’t exactly family friendly as shot after shot was blown out into the nether regions. It seemed that the shooters of the second relay were getting the worst of it, as the wind would increase to near gale force every time they took the line. Then when they were finished, the wind would let up just a bit for the first relay shooters. Veteran shooter Durwood Hansen took it all in stride and finished with an envious 247-3X that earned him the first place trophy. Jack Foster took second with a 245-5X and Russell Cree’s 2453X was good for third. In the end, the 200-yard victors tromped the 100-yard winners by

enough to give them all the edge in the race for the grand aggregate. Durwood Hansen came in first with a 49612X followed again by Jack Foster with a 494-20X second place and Russell Cree with a third place finish of 49414X. Not to be completely outdone, Tim Naugle won the prize for most X’s with an excellent count of 21. Sunday morning brought welcome relief to the VFS shooters, as the wind had died down to manageable levels and didn’t get much worse throughout the rest of the day. The morning activities commenced with the 200-yard VFS match. Bill and Sam Small must have eaten their Wheaties that morning and decided that they didn’t travel all the way from Washington to Montana for nothing. They were a tag-team force to be reckoned with throughout the VFS matches. Bill took first at 200-yards with a 248-10X, followed by Sam in second with a 247-7X. Tim Naugle came in third with a 247-5X. Another tasty lunch and afternoon snacks were provided by Augustina Cree. We got the afternoon session started with rotating another five benches and then the 100-yard VFS match got underway to round out the weekend. Sam Small won first place with a 250-16X, followed closely by Jack Foster in second with a 250-14X and Ray Becker in third with 250-12X. Team Small dominated the VFS grand aggregate with Sam’s first place 49723X and Bill’s second place 496-25X. Tim Naugle came in third overall with a very nice 496-17X. Bill Small put up the most X’s in VFS with a count of 25. I’m not sure how the Small’s managed to get all of their trophies back to Washington with them, being that the mid-sized car they were traveling in was already jam-packed with their gear and for some reason, two deer and a pheasant were riding along with them in the car. The animals ware actually taxidermy mounts, riding along safely buckled up in the rear seat, which was a good thing because they all barely escaped death when a semi side-swiped them on the road. I thought about asking to join Team Small to see if it would help me pull off a match win, but then I recon-

sidered when the thought of traveling with them crossed my mind. Besides the Small’s, we enjoyed the company of several other long-distance traveling shooters. Notable benchrest gunsmith Don Mulhall came all the way from Texas to put on a show with his 22 caliber and finished 4th overall in VFS. Imagine what he could have done with a 30. Don Carter was with us during our May shoot and decided to take another break from his annual Montana prairie dog safari to get some more range practice in. This time he brought along his girlfriend Sandra Simon and grandson Gene Paul Dahl, who did some fine shooting. Also worthy of mention was local shooter and gunsmith Scott Carpenter, who used his 6X scope equipped 30x47 HBR rifle in the VFS match and kept up the pace. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to the match hosts for all of their hard work and thanks to everyone who attended. New World Records Are Set by Audrey Brown It’s A Miracle! 40 Year Old Record Broken In Short-Range Benchrest Mike Stinnett - June 8, 2013 LV 100 Yds - 5-shot - .0077

The previous record had reigned supreme for nearly 40 years and was thought to be unbeatable. That all changed on June 8, 2013 while Mike was busy multi-tasking; his focus split between shooting and entering scores. He first shot a .4 but the next match was a .09. He followed with a .3 and then comes the .007. Mike says he had to chase the bullets and that he shot the whole group in about 15 seconds, “when you’re in the moment it seems like slow motion but in reality it took about 15 seconds to fire all the shots.” Mike says he was holding off in the middle of nowhere and managed to land that now famous .0077 group. It was the fourth target of the afternoon in typical nasty, windy, hot Denton, Texas conditions. He said there had been over 100 rounds from practice and the morning match run through his rifle and with the double-duty, he shot without cleaning. Mike says his barrel has about 4000 rounds through it, which is mid-life for his chambers, the oldest of which had 10,000 rounds before it died. Action: Kelbly Panda “Speedy Shorty” Stock: Larson, including action bedding Barrels: Krieger with 17 twist Scope: Leopold 45X Competition Rings: Kelby Single Screw Tall Flags: Graham Wind Flags (large) Tuner: Ralph Stewart Front Rest: Farley Bags: Micro Fiber Brass: Lapua (Base case is 6.5 Grendel) Bullets: Randy Robinett (BIB) 30 Cal. 114gr. 10 Ogive (my secondary – primary is 112 gr.) Powder: H4198 Reamer: 30 STEWART Mike calls it a 30PPC, but said it is in fact a custom design and Ralph deserves about 99% of the credit. Dies: Sizing Hornady Custom Shop Seating: Ralph Stewart Custom Mike says Ralph Stewart has cut all his chambers using a custom designed reamer. The concern was consistent

head space and Ralph has been able to keep his barrels within .0002 variance. Before the days’ match had begun, everyone’s gun had been weighed. When Mike shot that group, John Horn weighed it again. Vic Smith was standing behind Mike when it was shot. Nobody even really got a chance to look at it. Mike says the hardest part was keeping his mouth shut while the measuring committee did their thing. Thanks go out to Gene Bukys, Kent Harshman, Lowell Frei & Ron Hoehn; the Group Shooting World Record Committee for their attention to protocol and measuring acumen. Likewise NBRSA would like to thank all the match participants at North Texas Shooters Assn for their attention to detail and adherence to the rules. The devil’s in the details and you should all be congratulated on helping redefine the baseline for benchrest.

New World Records in Long Range Benchrest Ross Herrick - August 10, 2013 Light Gun 3-Target Group at 1,000-Yards 3.8688”

Jack Neary Wins the Wolverine Challenge On June 8-9 we held our second match at WWCCA this year and I might add a very successful one. The weather was absolutely perfect; temperatures in the mid 70’s in the daytime and 55 at night. Other than very twitchy winds on Sunday, all was great. This was also the match where the Eastern Region started a new initiative to attracted new shooters by offering a promotion, If a new shooter attends the awards ceremony, they enter a drawing to receive a free go card to any match held in the ER within 1 year. The match fees are paid to the range from the ER. This is the second initiative to be offered by the ER and the only reason I bring this up, the same guy who won the barrel last year is the same shooter who won the draw this year, OH WELL! Apparently the draws will be held at all of the ER matches (land of the winners). Anyway we had 29 shooters from

around Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania and some state called Ohio, or something like that. We also had a bunch of Canadian shooters; 7 in all. Peter Smith from Canada did good finishing 4th in the 2 Gun. But when the smoke had cleared Jack Neary came out on top with Brad Lewis nipping at his heels and “Joey” Krupa, who won the last 2 Wolverine Challenges a respectable third place. The results follow. The next match will be the FALL CLASSIC scheduled on Oct 5-6. Hope to see you then.
